Thursday, July 7 Movies On The Beach: Goonies Every Thursday, the good people from the Cape May Chamber of Commerce screen free movies on the beach. You bring the blanket, they’ll provide the entertainment. On July 7, don’t miss Goonies – that iconic treasure hunt feature of the 1980s. Friday, July 8 Bearcat Bootleggers At The Emlen Physick Estate Welcome to the Blind Pig – Cape May’s most notorious speakeasy. It’s the height of Prohibition and you won’t get past the bouncer without a password. Drinking is against the law, of course, but everybody’s doing it, so how bad can it be? Saturday, July 9 Antique Show And Sale At Historic Cold Spring Village This show presents antiques in an ideal setting – on the beautiful, wooded grounds of Historic Cold Spring Village, the county’s only living history museum. Antiques dealers will offer Victorian furniture, silver, ephemera, primitives, books and more. At 2pm on Saturday the Bob Ferris Orchestra will provide big band entertainment to get you in the shopping mood. Sale takes place on Saturday and Sunday 9am to 4:30pm. Wednesday, July 13 Cape May Stage Presents The Understudy The Understudy presents a love triangle with plenty of comic relief. Know what happens when a movie star finds himself miscast in a stage production of a Kafka masterpiece? Hilarity ensues. Starring G.R. Cape May’s leaders took a far-sighted approach in the city’s post-hurricane (1944) construction. Instead of simply restoring everything to the way it was, significant upgrades were made to protect the town from future storms. The most notable improvements were the storm sewers that were installed along the new Beach Avenue, the expanded rock jetties and the steel-reinforced concrete seawall that replaced the boardwalk. Ramblings From The Editors

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

OWING a car in a town that relies for its prosperity on the tourist economy seems heavyhanded. When you add in the fact that the car was towed because the city was still finishing up a road-churning project that ought to have been finished well before the summer season started, well, that’s just clueless.

But that’s what happened to someone who parked his car on Windsor Avenue on Saturday, June 18 and who swears there was not one single sign indicating that he shouldn’t be parking there. (And we believe him.) Turns out that Windsor was slated for resurfacing on the following Monday, which is when the car was towed, costing the visitor around $350. There are municipalities who carry out what could be described as courtesy towing, which happens when roadworks are slated. It happened to one of us in Brooklyn recently. The car was parked on a street where roadworks were planned. And even though signs WERE posted (though not clearly enough), the car was towed to an adjoining street, with no charge whatsoever.

Why could the Cape May Police Department not have done this?

But then this is the same city, and the same police department, that chose to enforce the seatbelt safety campaign a few years ago by ticketing drivers as they drove into town on Memorial Day weekend.

We asked City Manager Bruce MacLeod why the car had been towed, and he said that ‘Road Closed’ signs were in place. Here’s the thing... City Hall needs to start acting like it knows how important tourists are. Without them, well, people like Bruce and our police chief wouldn’t be getting paid six-figure

displays at the Mad Batter (for details on the Gallery Walk, see page 9).

The winning poster will help advertise Cape May Forum: Chautauqua At The Shore, which runs from September 15-25. You may as well mark your calendars now, as last year’s programming was well-received and the lectures and events this year promise to be just as enlightening. The theme for 2011 is “Guess What’s Coming for Dinner? The Politics of Food in the 21st Century.” Yum. Thanks to our readers for all the positive feedback we’re getting on the City Council column. It’s all in good fun, and we’re glad you’re enjoying it in the spirit in which it was intended. Don’t let your feedback stop there – do you have a favorite waitress, shopkeeper, hotel clerk? Or business owners – do you have an employee you can always count on? We are always on the lookout for Employee of the Week, so drop Kate an email if you have someone in mind who deserves recognition. Unfortunately, there are no large cash prizes involved, but a public pat in the back is a nice substitute. two new eateries have gotten the thumbs-up here at EZ Global HQ. We recently enjoyed a delicious lunch at Y.B. Eat Place, on Beach Avenue, and our resident ice cream aficionado was given a hot tip to check out the gelato place in Washington Commons, which has so far been under our ice cream radar. But check it we did and oh, boy – delicious! Speaking of food, the Cape May Point General Store has reopened after a five-year absence and over $800,000 worth of renovations, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. We haven’t gotten over there yet to check it out but we plan to...

Sandra’s work, a colorful oil on canvas piece which reads “All Politics Is Local,” netted her a $1,000 prize and the distinction of having her piece reproduced for the Forum’s big event in September (which you will read much more about in these pages over the next couple months). My wingman, Tony, moved away last week. Unlike cinematic wingmen, Tony never hauled my drunken ass home after a binge, didn’t concoct a scheme to get me out of a bad date, never went home with the ugly friend so I could score with the hottie. But he listened to every dating tale I told, was always ready for some Monday morning quarterbacking, could loan me tools to fix anything, told me the highs and lows of his wife and kids, and never failed to give me a verbal smackdown when he thought I was acting like a jackass over a woman.

Tony was there for me right until he left. I’d planned a goodbye party for him at Harpoon Henry’s, with 40 people attending and all sorts of special gifts. And then the email came. A woman responded to this

column, and wanted to set up a dinner date. Two catches: she wanted to bring a girlfriend, and that friend was only in town for one more day. Could we all have dinner that very evening?

You have to understand the conflict within men. Tony’s party was that night, and of course there was no way I’d miss it. But this was a chance to go out with not one, but two, women! Within my reptilian hindbrain, alarms were going off. My inner caveman

realized that this constituted the single best chance in my life to have every guy’s fantasy: a threesome.

Is there a doubt that Tony understood?

Of course not – like a true wingman, he unhesitatingly told me, “Are you crazy?

Skip the party!” And that is why I went to Harpoon Henry’s instead. A wingman like that, one who would sacrifice his own fun for merely the faint glimmer of hope that I might live the ménage à trois dream, that’s a guy worth celebrating. And he’ll be a tough act to follow.

(Truth in media: All the dates I’ve gone on because of this column have yet to yield so much as a goodnight kiss. But hope springs eternal...)

Late Night At Cape May Stage: A Sure Thing

T

Acting interns present comic and cerebral performances at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse

here are only so many ways to spend your Saturday night, but for the month of July Cape May Stage offers an exciting new option with Sure Thing, an evening of one-act comedies by David Ives.

Ives, a graduate of Northwestern University and Yale School of Drama, is a recipient of the Outer Critics Circle Award for Playwriting and has written humor pieces for The New York Times Magazine and The New Yorker in addition to his career as a playwright.

Sure Thing, described by Ben Brantley in The New York Times as “a wild slice of cerebral vaudeville,” features a series of short, smart comedies. In Words, Words, Words, three brilliant chimpanzees hammer away at typewriters, striving to write Hamlet for the mysterious doctor overseeing them.

Phillip Glass Buys A Loaf Of Bread pokes goodnatured fun at the contemporary composer as he enters the grocery store. These lighthearted but thought-provoking pieces are sure to delight.

summer they watch rehearsals, participate in workshops and work in all aspects for the theater, from administrative offices to backstage during the productions. In addition to their late-night performances, the interns also offer family-friendly entertainment in the mornings with Cape May Kids. This is the third year of the internship program at Cape May Stage and it continues to expand every year.

Directed by Eric Oleson and stage managed by Len Luvera, Sure Thing features interns Sabrina Blackburn, Daniel Povinelli, Jodye Carroll and Iraisa Ann Reilly acting in these absurd tales of love, language and missed opportunities. In the words of Artistic Director Roy Steinberg, “When you combine attractive, talented actors with smart, comic writing... It is the perfect way to start or end your Saturday night!”

Cape May Cooks

A culinary column by Knickerbocker and the Southern Belle

S

imon and Garfunkel did a fine job with “Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme,” but they neglected to record the obvious (to us cooks) sequel – “Cilantro, Dill, Basil and Oregano.”

Your Cape May culinary guides are no composers, but we are happy to share with you some of our favorite recipes using a variety of those flavorful plants that may now be taking over your garden. If you don’t have a garden, Cape May’s produce stands will supply you! And if you need inspiration, stop by the herb garden at the Cape May Historical Society (by City Hall on Washington Street) which features medicinal and culinary herbs. A stand-out is the Common Rue, also known as Herb-of-Grace. It was said to prevent the Black Death and can also be grown as an ornamental plant. The volunteer gardeners will be happy to give you a guided tour.

We’ll begin with two main courses. Bluefish is plentiful in Cape May waters, and is always reasonably priced. Don’t let its stronger flavor put you off – bluefish and strong-scented rosemary are a combination made in heaven. Make this dish with one large piece for the table. It makes a stunning presentation.

EZ Bluefish with Rosemary and Mustard 15 minutes For each serving: 6 oz bluefish fillet Dijon mustard fresh rosemary sprigs Using a soft brush, “paint” the fillets with Dijon mustard and sprinkle with rosemary leaves. Place long sprigs of rosemary down the center of the fish. Broil or grill until done, about 8-10 minutes depend-

ing on thickness. Serve with roasted potatoes and corn or green beans. Or try the potato salad on the next page.

Good Ol’ Summertime Chicken 20 minutes prep and cook, 20 minutes to marinate serves 4 1 lemon ¼ cup olive oil splash of white wine 1 garlic clove, minced 1 big handful of assorted herbs, chopped (oregano, thyme, basil, chives, sage) 1 ½ pounds thin sliced skinless and boneless chicken breasts salt and pepper to taste Cut the lemon in half and juice with a reamer. Slice the peel of one of the halves into thin strips. In a shallow glass bowl, mix the juice with the oil and add the lemon strips, herbs and garlic. Lay the chicken breasts in the marinade one by one, turning to coat. Let rest 20 minutes and grill until done, about 10 minutes. Serve with corn and potato salad.

Cape May Cooks ? From Page 41 in half ½ lb fresh green beans, snapped into 1” lengths ½ c white wine vinegar ¾ c sliced green onion 3 tbsp honey 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 1 ½ tsp salt 1 tsp pepper ½ c olive oil 2 tbsp chopped fresh dill ¼ c chopped fresh parsley 4 cooked bacon slices, chopped In a large Dutch oven, bring potatoes and water to a boil over medium heat; cook 20 minutes, until tender. Drain.

While the potatoes are boiling, in a medium saucepan cook the green beans in boiling water for seven minutes, or until tender. Plunge them into ice water to stop the cooking process, and drain.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the vinegar and next five ingredients. Add the oil in a slow and steady stream, whisking constantly until smooth.

Pour the vinegar dressing over the hot potatoes. Add the beans, dill and parsley just before serving, tossing gently to blend. Top with the chopped bacon and serve immediately, or cover and chill until later.

Nothing jazzes up a salad like a dressing you whip up yourself, using fresh herbs.

Here are two dressings we just love. Use them on salads of your choice, or as dips for fresh vegetables.

Mustard-Dill Vinaigrette 10 minutes makes 1 ¾ c ½ c white wine vinegar 2 tbsp chopped fresh dill 3 tbsp Dijon mustard 2 pressed garlic cloves 2 tsp sugar 1 ¼ c olive oil salt and pepper Whisk together all ingredients except the olive oil. You can also use a blender or food

processor for this. Add the olive oil in a steady, slow stream, whisking (or blending) until smoothly combined. Add salt and pepper to taste.

This dressing is especially good on a pasta salad.

Herb Dressing 10 minutes serves 4 ½ c cilantro leaves ½ c basil leaves 2 tsp coarsely chopped oregano leaves 1 garlic clove ¼ c mayonnaise ¼ c extra-virgin olive oil 1 ½ tbsp lemon juice ¼ c pine nuts, lightly toasted salt and pepper In a food processor or blender, combine the cilantro, basil, oregano and garlic and pulse until coarsely chopped.

Add the remaining ingredients and process until smooth.

Finally, harvest those herbs for healthful and relaxing beverages, including the summery cooler below. Keep a pitcher of Spa Water in the fridge for sipping. You don’t even have to go to the gym!

EZ Spa Water 1 quart spring water (or Cape May’s finest!)

6 very thin slices unwaxed cucumber, unpeeled 6 thin slices lemon 3 large sprigs of mint 3 large sprigs of basil Pour the water into a pitcher and add the other ingredients. Chill two hours and pour in pretty tumblers with slices of lemon and cucumber.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

think it may be time to return to the Victorian swimsuit ideal, after seeing the first crop of visiting nearnude Shoebies. I do not make this suggestion lightly – I am all for showing off The Body Beautiful, and I have played a major part in the evolution of the swimsuit over the decades. It was I who invented the bikini, after observing those delightful South Pacific ladies sporting in the water, silhouetted against the azure waters by the light of the atomic flashes.

And it was I who pioneered the short shorts, and then the Speedo. I must admit to the thong, too, though that was an unfortunate accident. I had been swimming off Cape May, and was going so fast that a visiting Japanese tourist mistook my flashing, perfectly sculpted form for that of a prized yellowfin tuna and cast from his boat with such skill that the hook snagged my trunks.

Well, it was a test of strength – my physical prowess in the ocean versus a 10,000pound breaking strain line (he was actually fishing for the legendary Cape May Sea Monster, which I happened to know was

off visiting its cousin in Scotchland at that time) and it was a close thing. In the end, my swimming trunks abruptly popped a leg-seam and the material instantly pulled up tight ‘tween my cheeks. I tell you, I have seldom before screamed, and certainly never at so high a pitch. I was forced to lob a hand grenade (one always carries a brace of grenades when swimming, hiking or visiting Wildwood) into the chap’s boat to make him let go (he survived, of course: my aim was perfect and the explosion merely

disabled the engine and ruined his tackle.

Fishing tackle, I mean – I was not attempting revenge at his near-ruination of the fabled D’Catur Family Tackle).

When finally I stepped from the waves, a slightly tight-lipped Greek god, a small crowd had gathered to see my very brief new costume. They of course assumed the creation was deliberate, and not actually a regular pair of trunks with 99 percent of the material rammed up a chap’s nether regions.

“Why, Jackson, that is DIVINE,” trilled a young Anna Wintour, summering here as she did. “What DO you call it?”

“NOTHING” I tried to say through gritted teeth, and she misheard as “a thong,” and a legend was born. Once safely back in The Mansion (and a very slow, careful 100-yard walk it was), I asked Mrs D to help extract my costume with the aid of some tweezers. On the plus side, she was able to tell me without the aid of a magnifying glass that my prostate was enjoying perfect health and that my diet was perhaps a little rich in fibre.

The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone

ou know her. Or else, you know of her. She’s the woman who’s totally together.

Impossibly together. The one with six kids who still manages to host her book club and f lat-iron her hair. The one who makes it to the grocery market AND the car wash before heading to morning yoga, where she’ll manage an entire vinyasa f low without smudging her eyeliner. She’s perfect, or at least, annoyingly close to it. She never has spinach between her teeth. She never has pantylines or pit stains. She never eats an empty calorie, drinks to excess or trips over her own two feet. She never takes a social misstep. She is a real life wonder woman.

I am not this woman. I drink too much, I forget about dental appointments, and I rarely make it to my Beach Avenue parking meter before it’s expired. At work in the restaurant, I am constantly in trouble for spilling beverages, my own and my customer’s, all over my uniform. When I iron my blouse, it comes out more wrinkled than before I started. Last week, I had lip-

stick all over my teeth for the better part of my shift which, despite my best efforts, I was late for. I’ve made every mistake a waitress can make. I am like wonder woman’s less competent, frizzy-haired little sister: blunder woman.

But there is one thing that, despite all of this, makes me well-suited for the customer service industry – one thing that I do well, and I do often. In the face of every dining room fiasco, I smile.

I was told when I first got started in this business that the most important thing a server can do is smile, and this is the one area where I have not fumbled. In the dining room, I am a grinning idiot and I’m very

proud of it.

So imagine my surprise when one of my customers – who hadn’t smiled all night, mind you – told me that she would have tipped me better had I made the effort to smile more.

“C’mon,” she said, “your life isn’t all THAT hard, is it?”

The thing is, I DID smile. And, when this woman ordered the seafood chowder and the seafood fettuccini, I even went so far as to make a corny joke about it being a “seafood kind of Sunday.” A joke which I followed not only with a smile, but with an actual bona fide laugh.

I suppose I could have smiled even more. I also could have drawn one on with red paint, like a circus clown. Then again, I am not on the menu, lady. You can’t substitute my facial expressions like you can substitute a side of carrots.

And just to be clear, no, my life is not that hard right now. At least not since I’ve discovered that blunder woman does have a superpower, after all – the power to smile, even at a table like yours.

Dear Answer Lady My girlfriend is gorgeous. I know – get a real problem, right? Now that summer is here, we’ve been hitting the beach every weekend, and her bathing suits are well… kind of old-lady style. She’s got a great body, and while I don’t want her walking around naked, I sure want her to show it off a little. Any ideas? – Proud Boyfriend Dear Proud The Answer Lady commends you for thinking that your girlfriend should be as proud of her body as you are (as long as you don’t look at her as arm candy, which is another kettle of fish). One thing you should learn about most women, though, is that roughly 99.9% of them do not feel comfortable in a bathing suit. It’s not as if it’s a matter of throwing on a pair of board shorts and looking adorable for women.

Dear Answer Lady I had my first baby six months ago and I still haven’t gotten my pre-baby body back.

Now that summer is here, it’s hard to hide behind clothes, and my husband gets mad when I don’t want to go to the beach. I just don’t feel comfortable, though. How do I get over it? – New Mom

She could look like Gisele Bündchen, but she still feels like her butt is too big, her thighs too flabby, and don’t even get the Answer Lady started on stretch marks and cellulite. Take your girl shopping for a new suit and gently steer her towards something a little sexier. And then buy her a nice cover-up to throw on over it, so she can feel less exposed when she wants. Flying Fish and Kaleidoscope are great places to start.

And keep telling your girl how beautiful she is – trust the Answer Lady when she tells

Dear Mom First, congratulations on your precious new baby. You have the best of reasons to feel less than swimsuit ready, and you certainly needn’t fret that you haven’t regained your girlish figure after a mere six months. (In fact, you should brace yourself for the possibility that you might never quite regain it.)

As for visiting the beach, please just go ahead and do it. You need to relax and recharge, and while the Answer Lady knows it is easy for her to say “don’t worry about how you look,” she will say this: most other beach-goers will be far too concerned and preoccupied with how they look than to give a second thought to how you look.

Vampire City

Winged invaders terrorize Cape May in a chilling new installment of Terry O’Brien’s short story Chapter 6: The Light

H

annah slowly opened her eyes and let morning settle over her. As a half-mortal she did not need much rest, but she always enjoyed the dreamy feeling of dozing off and waking up again. Next to her BQ lie tangled in a mess of sheets. Dawn was breaking, fighting its way in, but the room was still very dark from the computerized tinting of the big picture window overlooking the overflowing trash bins behind the Pier House restaurant.

Further to the left one could see the still smoldering remains of the very expensive mansion Hannah had blown up last night upon their discovery by the clan of vampires.

She stretched her tawny legs beneath the sheets and enjoyed the silky feeling. She continued scissoring her legs beneath the covers and was now all kinds of in the mood.

She had meant to pin BQ to the mattress last night and do him so well and he’d never want to be done again, but his all-too-mortal

Vampire City ? From Page 79 shell succumbed to the rigors of being on the run for 48 hours. He passed out.

I wonder how he’s feeling now? She asked herself and gave him a nudge. “You up?”

As she snaked a hand across his waist he shriveled away. She pulled back. He was shivering.

“I’m not feeling well.”

His trembling shook the mattress.

She sighed, frustrated, but was concerned for him.

“We’ve been running for two days,” she said. “I’m not surprised you’re worn out.

Actually, I’m surprised it took this long. You’re a lot tougher than you look. And sound.”

She expected this to draw a laugh from him; despite it all he’d been able to maintain his dry sense of humor, but to this he said nothing.

“I think I’ve got some medicine in the bathroom,” she said and reached for the lamp.

His hand shot out and grabbed hers. “Leave it off… please…” he rasped.

“Sure,” she replied.

“Thanks.” He removed his hand. His voice was raw and sounded delicate as tissue paper.

He was tired. Too tired. If he was going to survive this experience it would have to end soon.

“I’ll make us some coffee after I find you some pills.”

He replied by cinching himself tighter into the blanket.

She went to the medicine cabinet and found Alleve and Tylenol. She put them both on the night stand next to him, but he did not move; he was entirely covered by the blanket.

“Thanks,” he said, his voice now tinny and distant.

Something was off, but she couldn’t put her finger on it.

“Take those, they’ll make you feel better.”

He did not move.

She shrugged.

“Suit yourself. I’m making coffee.”

Another one of the reasons she enjoyed sleeping every so often was the added excuse to brew a pot of fine European

coffee. So she did.

From the bed, BQ asked in his tired voice, “So… the houses… how did you know?”

“How did I know what?”

“All of it,” BQ replied.

“Where to build them, how to build them. All the tunneling and security devices. How did you do all that?”

She smiled, feeling a little clever. “Well, as I told you, the Von Port Travelling Amusement did very well. All that money was left to me when… after Tituba passed. It’s been sitting in the bank accruing interest for over 100 years. I don’t spend much; just enough to live on and buy the occasional new pair of shoes.

And, of course, property. Lots and lots of property.”

“But the mansion you blew up last night… the land alone, this motel… just the dirt must have cost millions.”

Now she felt even cleverer.

“Not 50 years ago it didn’t. Land in Cape May was cheap until the ’90s rolled around. As for the construction and super-secret tunnels and such, provided you use non-union labor and pay cash under the table, it’s pretty amazing how quickly you can get quality work done. And with a little more cash how much confidentiality you can buy. There are a lot of thirdgeneration carpenters in Cape May who are living now off Von Port seed money.”

“Interesting,” BQ said, without sounding very interested at all. “But what I’m more curious about is… how did you know to build and fortify yourself in Cape May?” The old coffee pot gurgled and boiled on the counter and smelled like heaven. “A bit of luck, really. My… family and I, we spent years moving from town to town, tracking down small pockets of vampires. But we were never able to find the lair. We know they exist; many a vampire spoke of them beneath my blade, but not one ever gave it up. I suppose you have to admire than a little.”

“And?” BQ prodded her.

Vampire City ? From Page 80 “We were up in Bangor, Maine. We’d tracked a vampire to his home. He was an upscale vampire, a lawyer or something. In his house we found a safe. And in that safe we found a bunch of documents dating back to when my father drove them out of Europe.”

She poured two cups of beautiful black coffee and continued.

“It’s the lighthouses.”

BQ grunted. “What do you mean?”

She leaned against the kitchenette and stared at him. His back was to her and every few moments he would snuggle up deeper into the blanket. But there was something weird about the sound of his voice.

“These documents tied a lot of family names into the construction, purchase and maintenance of every lighthouse in America.

The vampires took over the existing ones or built new ones with all their old money.

You think I’m rich… I’ve got millions, but they must have billions by now. Anyway, the lighthouses were used as beacons to incoming vampires. I’m sure my father would be very upset to learn that the justice he’d brought forth in Europe had led to such misery in the Americas.”

“Maybe, maybe not,” BQ said then

She yanked the blanket off him and the vampire hissed at her in the gloom. It jumped up on all fours and dropped the smart phone it had been holding. grunted quite loudly.

She squinted at him.

“There’s not much use for lighthouses these days, but vampires are a traditional lot, so you can always be sure their main clan will be somewhere in the vicinity of a lighthouse. It’s made them very easy to track and put down these last few decades.”

“And what are you going to do with this Cape May clan?”

Now she perked up, pleased with her own brilliance. “That’s going to be fun.

You’re a local, I’m sure you’ve heard about the Cape May Point lighthouse’s recent conversion to solar energy. We’re going to use that to get them.”

“Hmm…” came the voice from the bed.

“The funding for the project came from an anonymous donor, the VPTA corporation – Von Port Travelling Amusement. I’ve been working on this thing for a while now.”

“Hmm…” the figure on the bed repeated.

“That’s none of your concern,” she replied.

“Yes, well, he wandered out into the night. My men sat, waiting, planning; how do we get to the great Hannah Von Port? Then this young man came walking right into our arms.”

“I’m sorry, Hannah,” BQ cried through the phone. “I just really needed some air! I was freaking out and didn’t want to wake you! I just stepped out for a cigarette! Hannah, I’m sorry!”

The voice said, “It is true what they say; smoking kills.”

And he chuckled. It was the chuckle that gave him away.

But at that moment, as Hannah backed away from the bed, she noticed all the many other vampires emerging from their hiding spaces; closets, cupboards, pantry, attic space, bathroom… anywhere shadow fell. Again, Hannah eyed her pack; there was no way she could get to her weapons. So she continued to back away in the darkness. She glanced at the clock next to the bed; 7:23am.

Her shoulders sank.

“My dear Hannah, my men are going to kill you, but I want you to die well, and with the knowledge that your Irish friend will die along with you.”

Hannah backed all the way up to the picture window. The glass was cold against her back.

“Why don’t we stop playing games. Father.”

“It is true, my daughter. I did not want you to know, but, well, here we are.”

She said, “At least I can die with the knowledge that my father was a lying bastard.”

“I told no lies,” the voice said firmly. “I merely rearranged the truth.”

Hannah counted; 10, 11, 12… 13 vampires closed in

on her, cautiously. They very slowly enclosed her in a semicircle, offering no escape route between them.

“Are you sure you sent enough men this time? Aren’t you afraid of losing them?”

Abraham, replied, “As you well know, my dear; I can always make more.”

“Such high regard you have for them, sending them to certain death.”

“These men serve the purpose for which they were created.”

“Let’s get this over with.”

“Hannah, no!” BQ cried followed by the sound of flesh hitting flesh. “Ow…” “Do it!” Hanah ordered.

“Very well then,” Abraham replied. “NOW!” The vampires leapt forward, filling the air with their lithe, gray bodies. She took a sharp breath, closed her eyes, and pressed the button under the window sash. The computerized tint lifted instantaneously, and 13 vampires fell into harmless dust clouds on the carpet.

“Now,” she said and wiped some ash from her shoulders, “enough with the shenanigans. I want my friend back.”

The voice said, “Friend? Not your lover?”

“I said it’s none of your concern. He’s my friend and I want him back.”

“But there have been other men over the years Hannah, many lovers before Irish. And those men you left to die or put down yourself when the need arose. So what makes this one so special? Has Hannah Von Port finally given her heart away?”

“I’m not… I just want him back is all. Now let him go or I’ll come and get him. If you harm him in any way I will end you.”

“Tsk, tsk,” the voice said disapprovingly.

“Hey!” BQ shouted, followed by another slapping sound. “Ow!” “I’m… I don’t know what I am…”

“It is okay, my child,” the voice said. “I know these things can be very confusing.”

“Shut up,” she said. “You’ve got 20 minutes to get your affairs in order.”

And she smashed the phone against the wall. Hannah Von Port got her pack, refilled it with weaponry from the secret compartment in the pantry, put on her black hunting clothes, and stalked out of the motel room.

It would be the last night of her life as she knew it.

Across Town Deep beneath the Cape May Point lighthouse, BQ struggled mightily, to no avail, against his bonds. The vampire listened as the phone went dead in his hands.

“A pity it has to end this way,” Abraham said, tossing the phone aside. “She’s right, you know, about us being a traditional sort.

We don’t adapt well to change. But I like this

“I think you might have some brains, and you certainly have some gumption. And if my Hannah has fallen for you, well, there must be something I’m not seeing, but I’m sure it’s a good quality.’

A smaller vampire handed Abraham a burlap sack with something heavy in it.

“What’s that?” BQ asked, frightened.

“Nothing for you to be concerned with,” he said to BQ. To the smaller vampire he said, “Please go help the others. My daughter

will be here soon and we need to prepare.”

“She’ll destroy all of you, you know.”

“Perhaps, perhaps not,” Abraham replied and pulled a jar from the burlap sack. Inside was all gray and black dots, some large, some small, a pulsing mass against the glass.

“What. Are. Those.” BQ asked.

“I believe they are known in the scientific community as superfamily Ixodoidea. But you probably know them better as ‘ticks.’”

“Oh holy Jesus…”

“Yes, I am afraid he cannot help you now. My men have been very hard at work preparing for this night,” he took a small black bug from the jar and held it up to BQ’s eye, “and I believe they deserve… what do you call it when you reward your fat little children for the genius of being able to wipe their own as… Ah yes, a treat.”

“Nonononononononono…”

“Where is your bravado now, Irish? Now that your Hannah is no longer here to help you?”

BQ could only weep.

“I do not blame you,” Abraham said.

“This is all going to be very unfortunate for you, but we all have our roles to play, no?”

Abraham reached a fist into the jar; it came out covered in ticks. BQ shrieked.

Abraham was right, it was going to be an unfortunate evening.

Toms Sims, Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews “The Understudy”

hat can you say about a job where you may never get to — well, do your job? Consider a job where you’re more a substitute than a player, a position where you’re first responsibility is to know your place. Enter The Understudy, a comedy by Pulitzer-Prize nominee Theresa Rebeck now showing at Cape May Stage. The play focuses on one man’s struggle to be heard when his voice is only meant to be an insurance policy at best.

Meet Harry, a struggling (dare I say slightly tormented) actor who speaks to imaginary audiences with lamentations over how terrible today’s movies are and his own fledgling career. Masterfully portrayed in all his awkwardness by G.R. Johnson, Harry arrives at the first rehearsal for a successful Broadway production of a newly discovered play by Franz Kafka. The play is a hit, in part because one of its performers is an action hero movie star by the name of Jake. Luke Darnell delivers a spot-on portrayal of Jake, whose greatest line in film seems to be that oft-quoted masterpiece of screenwriting,

G.R. Johnson, Luke Darnell and Kristen Calgaro present a humorous, relatable performance in “The Understudy” “Get in the truck!”

Tension arises as Harry learns the stage manager for the play is his ex-fiancée Roxanne, played by Kristen Calgaro. For his part (no pun intended), Harry only adds to the tension by wanting to change lines or

adjust blocking. The scenes among the three when he is suggesting changes are among the funniest in the play. Roxanne repeatedly reminds her ex that he’s just the understudy and will likely never go on. Whether she’s cursing the never-seen stoner tech producer or threatening to have Harry removed from the play, you can feel such a range of emotions from Calgaro and her comrades. Seething bitterness, palatable romantic energy; these hilarious performances should not be missed.

Rebeck certainly includes her fair share of theater references, which may not be so readily understood. But whether or not you get all the references to theater life, you will certainly get the universal themes of this play — struggling to be heard, recovering from past rejection, nothingness. Okay, the latter may seem deep for such a smart comedy, but playwright Rebeck doesn’t forget that she has chosen a Kafka play to be the centerpiece in her script. You will not miss the laughs as these three characters suffer through one of the most challenging understudy rehearsals in theater history.

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Kayaking in the rain

he weather in Cape May is unpredictable. I’ve had friends cancel a trip based on a rainy forecast, only to miss out on the best beach day of the season. So if you should find yourself facing a little rain on your Cape May visit, don’t lose heart. The sun may make an appearance after all.

While you’re waiting, take advantage of the fact that there’s more to Cape May than the beach. Climb the lighthouse, go shopping, or get some exercise. On a recent rainy Saturday morning, seven grouchy teenagers mourned their lost beach day. We suggested kayaking, and, though some were nervous, they eagerly agreed.

Renting a kayak for a tour of the harbor is a classic Cape May activity. A kayak is an excellent way to explore the saltwater marshes – there is no better way to sneak up on area wildlife. Sit-on-top ocean kayaks are easy to maneuver, and you can rent doubles or singles at Miss Chris Marina or Aqua Trails. You can take a guided tour or explore on your own. Miss Chris Marina offers 90-minute tours at 10am. Aqua Trails offers

two-hour tours departing at 9:30am, as well as full moon tours, sunset tours, and more.

Of course, it’s risky to go kayaking when there is a thunderstorm in the area, but you shouldn’t let a light drizzle stop you. As an added bonus, the rain can keep you cool as you paddle along.

If you have an odd number in your party,

someone will have to paddle alone – you might want to volunteer for this particular assignment. It’s more fun to have complete control of the boat. Bring bug spray, water, and, even in a drizzle, sunscreen and a hat.

You will get wet, so dress accordingly and leave a towel on the seat of your car for the ride home.

Some of our group had never been in a kayak or canoe before, so we decided against a tour and chose to stay close to the Aqua Trails launch point, near the Nature Center on Delaware Avenue. The newbies were a little nervous, and there was a lot of paddle bumping before they got the hang of it, but soon all of our boats were in control. Before long, they took to racing from point to point.

Some stuck to the shallow water near the Fishermen’s Memorial, but a few left the pack behind and explored more of the harbor. By the end of an hour, the sun was out, the smiles were back and the beach was calling.

Forget the forecast when you come to Cape May. Let a smile be your umbrella as you kayak in the rain.

heresa Rebeck’s comedy The Understudy continues to delight audiences and provides much to discuss even as you’re laughing in the aisles. Once again, Cape May Stage is in the forefront of producing new and exciting work for our community. Cape May Stage is presenting the New Jersey premiere of this play continuing a tradition of exposing audiences to what is the newest and best work in contemporary theatre. Again, the Equity theatre fulfills its mission of producing work by women writers. Last season, Topdog/Underdog written by Suzan Lori-Parks was many patrons favorite show of the season. Bird Droppings

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

T

his is a thank-you to Kathleen.

For those of you who were on the Monday morning bird walk at South Cape May last week, Kathleen is the 11-year-old birder who was right on my shoulder the whole way around. The one who kept identifying all the birds.

“Oh, right,” you are thinking, “that Kathleen.”

Yep. That one. She and her mom were part of the group and Kathleen quickly distinguished herself as one very knowledgeable, focused and talented young birder.

Once again, and not for the first time, I wonder why? Why some young people catch the natural history wave and ride it for the rest of their lives. And others sit in front of computers or twiddle their thumbs over the latest electronic time-killer, oblivious to the wonders that surround them.

One of the reasons I wonder this, of course, is because back when I was a wee little Thanu I was so captivated. Looking back over a lifetime of discovery, I can certainly understand why the natural world

got my attention. I have been repeatedly treated to spectacles and wonders.

I can’t really recall how I was lucky enough to be engaged. Or put another way, why me?

Do some people have a nature gene?

Are people who look around them and find a world filled with discovery born this way?

Roger Tory Peterson ascribed his life of

achievement to the time he and a boyhood friend set off to explore a place not far from their homes called Sweed Hill. He found at the foot of a tree a bird that he thought was dead, but when he touched the still form it burst to life in a blaze of golden feathers.

The bird was a Yellow-shafted Flicker, now called Northern Flicker. This encounter between two living things changed the face of the earth. Roger went on to be North America’s Father of Birding. His Field Guide to the Birds, published in 1934, opened the doors to the world of birds to millions.

Me? I had my own inspirational moment at just about the age that Roger had his. I too came upon a f licker foraging at the base of a tree. The bird was sucking up carpenter ants that were swarming all over the trunk.

The bird wouldn’t let me get close enough to touch it. But it did allow me to get within 20 feet (which was plenty close enough to watch the bird through my 6x binoculars). The best thing, the

Bird Droppings ? From Page 113 take-home thing about this encounter was that just like Roger’s encounter, this one was momentary, made priceless precisely because of that.

The encounter didn’t have an on/off switch. I couldn’t come back the next day and call it up again. I did come back on subsequent days... even years… But this oncein-a-life-time encounter was just that.

Like your first kiss, like your child’s first word; one-time events are priceless.

So back to Kathleen. The young birder at my shoulder who raised glasses with me and, at the end of the walk, presented me with a pencil drawing showing the earth, the sky, a sunrise and a Barn Swallow in f light.

If Barn Swallow was her catalytic bird, then the captivation was well-received. She is destined to go far. Maybe on to a lifetime studying nature or perhaps just plain enjoying it.

If you are a dad or a mom and you suspect that your child has the nature gene, you’ll be happy to know that on a CMBO field trip, there are between 30-60 catalytic birds to be encountered.

f you read this column regularly, you know that I’ve made a few dating mistakes. This is why I’m so grateful for my new dating guru, Rihanna. You’ve all heard of her – the four-time Grammyaward winning R&B singer who is, in her own words, “changing the sound of radio.” Her sexually charged songs have charted at number one in over 20 countries. I figure, if I take all of my cues from this successful, empowered woman who’s being called “the new face of girl power,” I can’t go wrong. Here, I’d like to share with you everything I’ve learned about dating from my new idol.

1. It’s never too early to learn about the (sadomasochistic) birds and bees. Last week, I was at my best friend’s 40th birthday party at the Hawk Haven Vineyard. The DJ played Rihanna’s hit song, "S&M." Aside from showcasing the singer’s lyrical genius (“Na-na-na come on, Na-na-na come on, Na-na-nana-na come on, na-na…”), the song is educational, too. By the end of it, even the sevenyear-old girls were singing along to “Sticks and stones may break my bones but chains and whips excite me.” You go, girl.

2. What’s a little domestic violence between pals? After her boyfriend, singer Chris Brown, beat the bejeezus out of Rihanna in 2009, she broke up with him and got a restraining order. This was truly inspiring.

After all, it must be difficult venturing out on your own on a mere $15 million a year. But that’s how important it was to Rihanna that she send a positive message to young girls. Of course, there was no sense in taking this message too far. A little real-life domestic violence

isn’t going to stop Rihanna from shooting a man dead in a video, or writing lyrics like “I like it when you pull my hair, nahhhhna.”

And don’t even think about questioning her decision to remain friendly with Brown via Twitter. “It’s f***ing Twitter,” Rihanna told her fans, "not the altar!” Kudos to you, Rihanna, for further blurring the lines between sex and violence. That’s never been done before.

3. Sex is good…even when it’s, you know, gross. On her latest album, Rihanna tells us that she doesn’t care, she likes sex in the air, especially the smell of it. And to think…all these years, I’ve been thinking that genitalia shouldn’t stink.

4. Don't try too hard to be sexy. Rihanna recently said that she never tries to be sexy.

Girls should just be "sweet and innocent," and sexy is something that comes without trying.

It's “natural.” You know, as natural as wearing nothing but silver body paint on MTV. So here’s to you, Rihanna. To borrow some lines from your own music, you really put on quite a show. Very entertaining. But it’s over now. Go on and take a bow. It’s over now.

Tom Sims, Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews the 2011 Cape May Film Camp

hat’s most intriguing about the Cape May Film Camp is that on Monday, we start with ideas, cameras and computers, a bunch of students, a few professionals — and not much else. What we have by Friday night is a set of films that create an engaging night of entertainment. What happens in between can only be described as creative mayhem.

As the curtain rose on another Friday night of the Cape May Film Camp, all that excitement rose with it! There were four films created at camp this year, all of which you can see on YouTube (www.youtube.com/capemayfilm).

One Bad Egg: What happens when your main character eats a bad egg and is taken to a place where monsters collide, worlds explode, and bad eggs are on the attack? Our younger students enjoyed using their artistic and storytelling abilities in this animated starter.

As The Curtain Rises: You’ve never seen behind the scenes at Film Camp like this. An insider look at what camp is like, the commentary becomes very interesting when the interviewer asks campers, “What one word

Shell Game: In the camp’s major narrative presentation, a young boy estranged from his brother and pursuing a love interest saves an old beach bum from a pack of bullies. His reward: an old shell the man has been carrying around — one that he says has special powers.

When the boy sees the magic in action, he must

decide: on which of his challenges should he work the shell’s magic?

The Button Film: This short film acts as a closing credit, highlighting each campers’ unique talent in one short, quirky presentation.

Gail Schmidtchen was this year’s camp promoter, and what a job she did, encouraging more than 20 registrations to camp. She was also an instructor and a ringleader at the West Cape May Borough Hall, where the camp and screening took place. Joe Stinson returned to Cape May to be our Camp Director along with Film Festival Curator Stefan Prosky. They were joined by Collin Pritchard, Ari Blau, Peter Owens, Mike LaVancher, Shaine Meier and a host of other helpers throughout the week to create some of the most successful and ambitious camp projects ever.

Special thanks to the West Cape May Borough Hall, Cape May County Division of Culture and Heritage and the First Presbyterian Church of Cape May.
