Thursday, July 14 Cape May In Blue And Gray Tour And Dinner Hear how the Civil War divided Cape Island on this tour and dinner, brought to life by Actors Offstage. Movies On The Beach: Jaws Every Thursday, the good people from the Cape May Chamber of Commerce screen free movies on the beach. Friday, July 15 Full Moon Lighthouse Climb The Friends of the Cape May Lighthouse host this moonlit climb up the 199 steps of the lighthouse. Stand at the starry top and enjoy a spectacular view. Ramblings From The Editors

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

his Saturday, July 16, is the second annual Cabanas Cape May Beach Bash volleyball tournament, so you can expect the beaches across the street from Cabanas (Decatur Street) to be covered in dozens of nets, with players ranging from intermediate to professional vying for prizes and places. If last year’s tournament is any indication, we can also expect plenty of spectators and a great party at Cabanas afterwards (there will be $2 Bud Light and Bud Light Lime from 3-7pm, plus 50% off food for participants and organizers). We’re glad to see Cabanas taking the initiative to organize such a great event – it’s the kind of big thinking that brings new visitors to Cape May, and it is also a lot of fun for those already here.

Make sure to get to the tournament, even if you’re not playing. Last year’s open division saw exciting match-ups between former AVP Tour professionals, and the crowd got to soak it all up for free. Don’t miss the chance to see top-notch athletes right here on Cape May’s beaches.

We’d like to send a big thank-you to both the folks who organized the Whale Of A Day Festival over in Townbank this past weekend, and to all the loyal EZ fans, both old and new, who stopped by to say hello and purchase a T-shirt, hat or book at our booth. What a lovely, small-town feel the festival had, and, despite the ghastly heat, everybody was friendly, relatively wellbehaved and seemed to have a lovely time.

WE’D LIKE to draw you attention to a (relatively) new weekly column, “Cape May Cooks,” penned by two inveterate chefs who call themselves Southern Belle and Knickerbocker. This pair have been compiling recipes specially designed to tickle the palates of Exit Zero readers. In fact, they are so specific to this publication that several of the recipes are labelled “EZ.” Turn to page 41 for this week’s installment, which is themed around shellfish – you’ll find recipes for that jewel of the ocean, the scallop, as well as an easy lobster meal for the whole family. And if you’re looking to make good use of those Jersey tomatoes, just you wait for our August color issue, when these dervishes of the kitchen whip up everything from bruschetta to gazpacho.

ANOTHER piece of important news: Movies on the Beach are back in action. The Chamber of Commerce is once again hosting free movie screenings every Thursday night. Tonight, take the kids to see the animated film “Kenny the Shark,” then pass them off to the sitter while you sit back for Jaws, which is as apropos a movie as you could ask for in a beach town like ours. Next week, catch Alice in Wonderland.

Stop by the beach at 7:30pm to take part in fun and games geared toward the kids, then sit back on a blanket or beach chair for some fine seashore cinema. For details on this and other events in the coming week, consult our hand “EZ Guide To What’s Going On,” which you’ll find on page 9.

Speaking of well-organized events, we hear that the fundraiser for the US Coast Guard Flotilla #82, held this past Saturday night, was a smashing success.

Gregg Reich of Sturdy Savings Bank, one of the event’s organizers, tells us, “The attendance, weather and vibe exceeded all expectations. We raised a substantial amount to benefit the USCG Auxiliary Flotilla #82, and we had a great time doing so. I personally was in heaven as the Lobster House was kind enough to donate an open oyster bar for the event. In addition, a generous few Cape May County-based businesses donated to the Silent Auction – a surfboard, a TAG Heuer watch and a bike were auctioned, just to name a few of the items. Our hosts, Michael and Jeannie O’Neill, couldn’t have been more welcoming or generous. All aspects of the event went smoothly and we appreciate Exit Zero coming to cover! The Flotilla is sincerely appreciative to all the supporters of the event.”

F ALL George Costanza’s great lines on Seinfeld, this is one of my favorites: “Do you ever get down on your knees and thank God that you have access to me and my dementia?”

And it came up in the context of Jerry having a threesome.

Last week I told you that I might’ve had the tiniest chance for every man’s fantasy: a threesome. You got that I was joking, right?

Not about every guy’s dream scenario – because trust me, we’ve all thought about it, prayed for it, and resigned ourselves to it never happening – but about the snowball’s chance in hell of me actually being involved in that menagerie.

In the Seinfeld episode, Jerry is dating one woman, but is more attracted to her roommate. How to make the switch? He can’t, the switch is impossible, says George, unless... if Jerry suggests to his girlfriend that he’s interested in a threesome, the girlfriend will recoil in disgust and dump him. But she’ll tell the roommate about Jerry’s twisted plan, the roommate will be

intrigued, Jerry will “accidentally” call her, and voila, the switch is made. George’s plan is so demented that it nearly works, until the girlfriend actually wants to have the threesome. Jerry can’t handle it. “I’m not an orgy guy!” he shouts.

Becoming an orgy guy, according to Jerry, involves a serious lifestyle change. Dressing differently, acting differently, growing a mustache, getting robes and lotions and a new bedspread and thick carpeting and

weird lighting. Like Jerry, I’m not ready for that. Like Jerry, I’m too neurotic. I’ve tried growing a mustache, and it ain’t pretty.

Threesomes sound like fun, but I’m more into concentrating on one woman at a time. I’ll be happy enough if I can make her happy, a difficult enough task. Doubling the number of legs and lips and hands and other fun parts is more of a challenge than I can handle. And what about the emotions? I’d be a mess, worrying that I’m spending too much time concentrating on one woman and ignoring the other. The next day, who do you call first, without offending the other?

I’m a simple man with simple tastes, and numbers greater than two blow my mind.

I’m just not an orgy guy.

After having seen one accident and several near misses at this light, I think I’ve figured out the problem... There are two lights!

There should only be one, fourlight stop light instead of a separate green arrow light along with the regular light. It is almost instinct to start driving once you see something turn green. So if you are going straight and the turn arrow turns green you feel like going. Just make it one light with a green arrow turn thing on the bottom and I think that would help solve this problem.

– Cape May *** Speaking of stop lights... I think it is great to open Elmira Street to traffic both ways but... there should be a left turn arrow for those turning left onto Elmira from Lafayette.

– Cape May *** can someone just remove that sign as you go over the West Cape May bridge onto the island that says tune to 1700am for tourist info for Cape May? Either remove it or make the station a viable one with actual tourist info and not just a bunch of fuzz!

Cape May Cooks

A culinary column by Knickerbocker and the Southern Belle

W

ho knows what it was that inspired those early humans to consider eating something covered in a hard shell with pinching serrated claws? Archaeologists tell us we’ve been eating crustaceans (lobster, crab and shrimp) since prehistoric times. Commonly known as “shellfish,” they are not fish at all. Neither are mollusks like scallops and clams.

This week we are sharing with you some of our favorite recipes for these glorious treasures from the sea.

Scallops are the undisputed jewel in Cape May’s seafood crown, said to account for about three-quarters of the total dollar volume of seafood coming into the port. You won’t find better, fresher scallops anywhere!

Grilled Cape May Sea Scallops with Curried Beach Plum Glaze 20 minutes plus 1 hour to marinate serves 4 as an entrée, 8 as an appetizer This dish is delicious as an appetizer or as an entrée served with couscous and a salad. ½ c olive oil ½ c beach plum jelly from local stands 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 1 tbsp curry powder 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated ¼ tsp salt 1 clove garlic, chopped 24 sea scallops from local markets Special equipment: 8 bamboo skewers, soaked 30 minutes in water In a large ceramic bowl, whisk the first eight ingredients until smooth. Add scallops and toss to coat. Cover and refrigerate one hour. Thread

three scallops on each skewer.

Grill or broil until scallops are done and glaze has caramelized, three minutes per side.

Summer Shrimp Cocktail Salad 10 minutes serves 4 as an appetizer Try this variation instead of the usual red sauce, served in martini glasses.

1/2 pound cooked, shelled and deveined medium shrimp 8 cherry tomatoes, halved or quartered 2 tbsp chopped fresh herbs, (basil, mint, parsley, chives) 3 scallions, white and green parts, chopped zest of 1 lemon 1 tbsp lemon juice 2 tbsp olive oil salt and ground pepper Chop the shrimp into thirds and place in a bowl with remaining ingredients. Toss gently and heap into martini glasses, garnishing with a slice of lemon on the rim.

Shell’s Crab Cakes 15 minutes, 30 minutes refrigeration serves 6 You can find wonderful crab cakes in Cape May’s restaurants, but wow your friends by making them at home.

2 eggs ¼ c mayonnaise 1 ½ tsp parsley 1 tsp Old Bay Seasoning ½ tsp pepper 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 1 lb jumbo lump crabmeat ½ c cracker crumbs (Saltines) bread crumbs vegetable oil Beat the eggs and add the next six ingredients, mixing

9 lasagna noodles, uncooked 2 tbsp butter ½ c finely chopped celery ½ c finely chopped onion 1 red bell pepper, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, minced 24 oz sour cream ¼ c chopped fresh basil ¼ tsp salt 1/8 tsp pepper 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg 2 (10 oz) packages frozen chopped spinach, thawed, well-drained, and pressed between paper towels 1 lb fresh lump crabmeat, drained 4 c shredded provolone and mozzarella cheese, divided Cook lasagna noodles according to package directions, drain and set aside. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium high heat; add celery, onion, bell pepper and garlic.

Sauté for four or five minutes, or until the vegetables are tender.

Combine sour cream and next four ingredients in a large bowl; stir in vegetable mixture and well-drained spinach. Add crabmeat and mix. Arrange three lasagna noodles in bottom of a lightly greased 13x9 baking dish, and top with half of the crabmeat mixture. Top with half of cheese. Repeat layers – three lasagna noodles, remaining crabmeat mixture.

Top with remaining three noodles.

Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes.

Uncover, top with remaining cheese. Bake, uncovered, 15 minutes (until cheese is melted). Let stand 10 minutes before serving.

EZ Steamed Lobster Shore Dinner 30 minutes serves 4 Fear of lobster? Here’s how to make that Jersey Shore dinner at home. Follow our EZ instructions and add melted butter, lemon wedges, corn and potato salad. You’re done! four 1 to 1½ lb lobsters, rinsed salt Special equipment: Lobster pot or 4-6 gallon stock pot with tight fitting cover, plus vegetable steamer or colander Pour water into bottom of lobster pot, if using, or into the stock pot, to a level of two inches, adding one teaspoon of salt per quart. Invert steamer or colander and place in the pot, providing a platform for the lobsters. Bring to a boil. Add the lobsters, head down, cover and steam 12 minutes for one pound and 14 minutes for oneand-a-half pounds, shaking the pot several times or rearranging the lobsters once during cooking.

Remove the lobsters from the pot and let them rest a few minutes before serving. Pass the bibs, butter and lemon wedges and enjoy!

Note: You can anesthetize the lobsters by placing them in the freezer for 15 minutes before steaming.

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

LOVE this joke: What’s the difference between the French and toast?

You can make toast with soldiers! No, wait... You can toast a soldier! Hold on... That’s not it... Um... I never was good with a joke; the late Mrs D. used to say I was about as funny as a... Now what was it...? It was very amusing anyway, what she said. Anyway, where was I? Ah yes, the French and toast. Is there any difference between them? I think not... Or maybe that wasn’t the punchline...

Certainly the French are at the same time very amusing and not at all funny. I did not get on well with General De Gaulle, who I think never forgave me for liberating Paris.

Toulouse-Lautrec, now him I liked: he was three-and-a-half feet of fun; and I refer not to his height. Or so his harem of dancing girls assured me.

I concede though that my own touch of French heritage has given me a certain je ne sais quoi, though I’m not sure what. And I do suit a beret, and my broad chest does fill out a Breton shirt impressively.

Also, whilst it was an amusing turn of

phrase, I cannot entirely agree with the late President W.’s summing up of that nation as “cheese-eating surrender monkeys”: I fought with the French Foreign Legion in Vietnam and they were as tough a bunch of men as I have ever showered naked with. Though their incessant smoking of Gauloises cigarettes did tend to give our positions away to the enemy.

Mimes, though – how I detest mimes, and none more than that whey-faced Marcel Marceau. I once chased him across

a Parisian rooftop after a (silent, obviously) insult he directed at me in a bar. I am quite sure he signaled that I was the illegitimate son of a lady of ill repute (which actaully might be the case – Ma D’Catur was a woman of many mysteries, and quick with the back of her hand whenever anyone tried to delve too deep into them), and I instantly went to punch him in his little painted face.

He ducked, though, being quick as a weasel, and then he had the nerve to pretend to inspect his nails in boredom. Well, he certainly wasn’t bored when dodging a full clip from my Colt 45, I can tell you that for sure. However, to his credit, he did manage to avoid every round, and not once did he make a sound.

Ah, wait... Now it comes back to me…

Hold on… Right: What’s the difference between the French and toast? You can’t make soldiers from toast! No, wait… You CAN make soldiers from… or was it an omelette… You can’t make an omelette without breaking French toast? THAT sounds like it… You are doubtless helpless with laughter now.

I

The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone

am a sucker for a good infomercial.

Once I’m 20 minutes into an ad, I’m convinced I need a “magic mop” or a kitchen knife that will cut through stone. The presentation sucks me in.

I allow myself to believe that these products are special. It’s this magic butt-blaster that will whip my rear into shape instead of collecting dust under the bed, next to my magic ab-roller and my collection of magic Pilates DVDs. In the restaurant, I am your personal Billy Mays. I need to convince you that, of all the menu items in Cape May, my menu items are the most special. I even refer to some of these items as – how original – the “specials.” But I am lying to you, folks. An evening’s “special” additions are about as special as my butt-blaster is magic.

At least where I work, these dishes are a collection of all the ingredients that no one’s been ordering all week. Take a dish, alter the preparation ever so slightly, jack up the price, have a server call it a special, and voila! It sells like hot cakes.

When I approach a table, it’s often the

first question I get. I say, “How are you?” and my customer says, “Specials?” I am tempted to respond with “What a coincidence, sir, I’m doing ‘specials’ tonight, too.”

Instead, I rattle off the list. If we aren’t offering anything additional on a given night, my guests look at me as though I were an airline attendant who just bumped them from first-class to coach. Even the first-timers are ticked, which I don’t understand. If you’re new to a restaurant’s menu, isn’t every item already a “special” one?

The worst is when I run out of a “special” halfway though a night. A customer will spot a soft-shell crab from across a bustling dining room and demand to know

why she wasn’t offered the overpriced appetizer. I feel compelled to reassure her it’s not because I don’t find her special. And it’s best not to make jokes in such a situation about how most people are pleased not to have crabs. It doesn’t go over well.

Sometimes, simply calling a dish “special” isn’t good enough. We need to call it something extra special. (Would I have bought that butt-blaster if it had been called a butt-trimmer? It’s questionable.)

On the Fourth of July weekend, for example, the chef had us refer to the surf and turf as the “holiday barbeque.” Not only did the dish instantly become more special, but guests felt patriotic ordering it.

We grow up being told we are special.

We give every member of every pee-wee baseball team a trophy, even the losers. But for pete’s sake, does all of our food have to be extra special, too? Maybe we should all try ordering what we want instead of what we’re told we want. Unless, of course, what we’re told we want is a magic contraption guaranteed to tone your tush. A menu that could do that? Now that’d be special.

Winged invaders terrorize Cape May in a chilling new installment of Terry O’Brien’s short story Chapter 7: Blinded by the Light

H

annah Von Port, 113 years old, jogged with deadly purpose. It had been only 15 minutes since the phone conversation with her father, Abraham Van Helsing, who was, apparently, paterfamilias of the last remaining clan of vampires in the Americas. What was it he said? Something about being able to make more vampires any time he wanted? But preferring quality over quantity? She had never thought her father a vain man, in fact she had never met the man in any meaningful way after infancy, but she hoped he was true to his word and this vanity, this quest for purity, meant fewer foes to dispose of.

The lighthouse.

For decades lighthouses had been vampire strongholds for various practical and superstitious reasons. It was the Cape May Lighthouse where she would make her final stand.

The plan had played out pretty much exactly as expected. Except for the part about her longthought-deceased father being their leader. That was a wrinkle.

Otherwise, it had gone off almost like clockwork, beginning with her funding of a green initiative to run the lighthouse on solar energy.

She’d always heard her father was a disciplined man, but one who also appreciated a good joke. She hoped he saw the irony in their private lair now being powered by the sun.

It was with this thought that the lighthouse came into sight.

Without slowing she approached the entrance doors, fingered loose the blade attached to her thigh, and thought of going only one direction from here: down.

She ran. Predictably, several creatures attacked from the surrounding shrubbery and were neatly dispatched. She wiped the blade across her pant leg and approached the doors; locked. Two seconds later they were open, the jambs shattered from a powerful kick. In the lobby she took quick inventory; where was the door to the lair? It would not be obvious, but it had to be sizeable enough to allow entry to groups of vampires and their prey. She scanned; desk, bathroom, vending machines, supply closet, stairs… supply closet. She smiled. Of course it was the closet. Hadn’t she put all of her own secret entries into closets or pantries? And wasn’t the leader of this clan her father?

She opened it, and after a few seconds of searching, found the device that opened the false door in the back. Genetics are a powerful thing.

Of course there were two guards just inside the entry way,

and of course she destroyed them with a few flicks of the wrist.

This was all just gamesmanship.

These vampires were sheep led to slaughter, a distraction.

She pushed the bodies aside and continued down the dark passage. Small electric sconces lit the way, casting long, weird shadows over the ramped passageway. The electric lights were installed right next to older candle sconces, which were left covered with ancient dripped wax. Again she smiled to herself.

They had tapped into the easy, free electrical source above them.

She expected more goons as she descended, but none appeared. Must be saving them for the big finale, she thought.

A minute later she was at the bottom of the winding tunnel, staring at a red metal door. It was unlocked.

She knew whoever headed this clan would prove to be a vain, arrogant man, like most vampires; thinking himself above the rest, thinking humanity incapable of retaliation. But Hannah knew otherwise. She had them on the run. And even though she was only semihuman, she counted herself among the mortals. She knew this vanity and arrogance would prove their undoing.

She kicked the door open.

The other side was pitch.

“Welcome, Hannah,” came Abraham’s voice from the dark.

Slowly, she edged into the room. From the echoing sound of the voice, it was cavernous, and pitched her into a brief moment of bewilderment.

“It is a difficult room to get used to,” Abraham continued, a fleck of German still haunting his voice. “I will give you a moment.”

“I don’t need a moment,” she replied and drew a second blade from her pack. “A moment means a moment longer with you in the world. I’d rather not wait.”

Abraham chuckled and it bounced all around her. “Just like your mother; strong-willed, defiant. It was a shame I had to destroy her…”

Hannah was blind, but in the first instant of light made out the multiple figures approaching her. She twirled, swung, danced a deadly ballet as sparks shot through her eyes. Not all of her blows landed, but enough to know she was dealing death.

“Enough!” Abraham cried and the fluttering movement around her ceased.

Then her eyes were well-enough adjusted to make out the room; it was indeed a cavern, carved out of the rock and sand of the Point.

It was obvious many years of hard work went into it. The walls and supporting beams were plain at first sight, but a lingering look revealed ornate carvings, similar to the ones on the sheath of Hannah’s blade.

“Familiar, no?” Abraham said.

“Yes,” Hannah said, and finally laid eyes upon him. He looked like his pictures, and the pictures were not flattering. An inkling of the man he was once was still existed, but he had been hollowed out, body and soul. This was not the first vampire she had seen; the shock of their sallow complexion and sagging skin

She stopped weeping, her eyes now full of fury. Her grieving was done.

“Where is he?” she asked.

“We shall get right to it then? Fine. Your lover is here.”

“He’s not…” she started to protest, but as they wheeled him out on the cart she realized that she was indeed in love with him.

“Q…” she gasped.

He couldn’t answer. His mouth, face, his entire body was covered in engorged ticks.

Hannah was speechless. The remaining vampires surrounded him like hungry dogs.

They pulled the bugs off him and popped them in their mouths like black and gray jelly beans. Each time the did a guttural moan came from his throat. He was not conscious, just awake enough to feel the pain.

Abraham said, “I’m afraid, for you, that

he will not last the hour. We have been… indulging ourselves a bit, I’m afraid. Irish blood is the sweetest, after all.”

Hannah sheathed her blades. She watched in silent horror as the beasts continued to pull the bugs off of BQ, each one trailing behind it chuck of flesh or string of blood. She was horrified, but focused.

“You were right my dear, it ends tonight.

And I’m afraid it is you that will be ending.”

She sensed movement behind and around her.

“It is a shame that we cannot work together, father and daughter. We could do wonderful things. And I miss you so.”

More figures crowded behind her, Abraham was obviously making his big play now. Good.

“But you refuse to listen to reason, so…”

Abraham clicked a device in his hand and the lights went out. All was blackness.

The next bit happened very quickly, but very slowly for Hannah. The figures around her lunged to the center of the room where she stood. The creatures feeding off of BQ remained where they were, unwilling to leave the feast. Hannah rolled forward and removed her pack. She unzipped it and grabbed two holy water grenades, like the one

She flipped the pins off with her thumbs and sent one towards BQ and the other into the crowd of massing vampires. The grenades exploded, filling the room with orange light. Then it was silent. The lights came back on. The room was full of the ash and the limbs of disintegrated vampires. BQ kept moaning.

“You are…” Abraham said slowly, “quite good at this. We shall meet again.”

And up he rose into a ventilation shaft.

“No, we won’t,” she said to herself and flew across the room.

BQ moaned. Her heart ached, but there was nothing she could do at the moment. Up the passage she went, into the lobby. A skittering from above. She took the lighthouse steps three at a time, and there he was, perched on the railing, ready to make his escape.

He saw her and turned in the moonlight. “Hannah…”

A dagger thunked into his abdomen.

“Hannah, you cannot win.”

Another dagger hit his thigh.

“Your aim is terrible.”

“I hit exactly what I aimed for,” she replied.

“So what do we do now, Hannah? A fight to the death?”

“Something like that.

But first you need to know something,” she jammed a gear handle and the light tower, which had been cycling lazily, stopped; it shone directly on Abraham.

“Hannah, if your big plan was to kill me with light powered from a solar battery, you are about to find out this was a terrible mistake.”

She thought of the powered lights in the tunnel below.

“This light shines through a UV filter. Solar light contains high levels of solar radiation. It has to be watered down for those that work with it daily, like the people at this lighthouse.”

This got Abraham’s attention. Hannah pulled a glass tube from the back of the light.

“I,” she said and smashed the glass on the floor, “have just removed that filter. You have

three seconds to live.”

A third dagger pinned his coat to the wall, trapping him.

It took a moment for him to free himself, but that was enough.

In a panic he ripped at the coat and threw his arms over his face, trapped in the light. The hairs on his face and hands sizzled, but he was neither bursting into flame nor collapsing into dust. This light was only slightly stronger than filtered light.

He smiled. Hannah’s plan had failed.

“It looks as though you have overplayed your hand, Hannah,” he said, squinting. He could not see her in the brightness.

“No,” she said from behind him and jammed the old blade through his back and into his heart. “I have played my hand perfectly. Goodbye father.”

Stunned, he turned. He flailed at the blade but could not reach it. Panic swept over him, then resignation.

“Good girl,” he said and collapsed to the ground. A blue mist rose off of him. In a few minutes there would be nothing left to mark his passing but a small puddle of brackish water.

Less than 30 seconds later she was at BQ’s side. She could not tell if he recognized her; he was busy suffering. She pulled handfuls of the nasty insects from the hollow of his neck.

“Here goes,” she said.

She closed her eyes. Her incisors grew long and sharp. She sank them in his jugular, drew several draughts, and released.

“Is that…” he whispered, “going to work?”

“I don’t know, I’ve never tried it. I’ve never... loved anyone enough before.”

He coughed a nearly imperceptible laugh.

“I just know I want to be with you for a very long time.”

“You…” he hissed, “just want… my body…”

She sniffed away a tear.

“That too.”

For several long minutes nothing happened.

Then a tick fell dead from his cheek.

My Grandpa Henry Sinsz July 27, 1918 - July 9, 2011

Dear Grandpa, I’m really going to miss you, but I’m glad that the suffering is over and you are now up in heaven with Grandma. I want to thank you for EVERYTHING you have done for me and my family. Thank you for building the house in Cape May the year I was born so that I’ve had the fortune of a beach house my entire life. Thank you for taking me fishing and crabbing as a little boy (and for letting me take you fishing when you got older). Thank you for taking me to the beach and boogie boarding. Thank you for taking me to putt-putt golf and to the arcade. Thank you for taking me bike riding and to parades and fireworks.

Thank you for the unforgettable holidays we spent at Walther Gardens in Baltimore. But mostly, thank you for being the best grandpa ever! Most people should be so lucky to have had grandparents like me. It has been my pleasure to see you almost every day for the last 14 years and it was the ultimate honor to be holding your hand as you took your last few breaths. There’s no other place I’d rather have been. Please tell Grandma I said hello, I miss her dearly, and I’ll see you both in heaven when my times comes. I miss you already Grandpa.

ooking for a little shiver on a hot summer night? Take the Ghosts of Cape May trolley tour!

July is the perfect time to take your kids on a ghost tour. The summer solstice has passed, but the days are still long, so you start your tour while it is light. Though it might be dark by the time you finish, the kids will know by then that the ghost tour involves more giggles than screams. A few minutes with the actor/tour guide will set them at ease, and they will be shouting out “3am!” whenever the guide asks the appropriate question.

Adults need not fear that the ride is geared for children. The stories, based on information provided by the Ghost Writer, Craig McManus, include a little bit of history, a little bit of tragedy and a lot of wit. The guides tend to be in tune with the audience, and the talk isn’t gruesome. Like all of MAC’s trolley tours, the Ghost Tour also offers a charming way to see Cape May. The trolley takes you through the twists and turns of the historic district as dusk falls. Wave to the people passing in horse-drawn carriages.

Watch the porches of Victorian homes come to life in the candlelight. Enjoy the distant rumble of the surf mixed with the music from the restaurants you pass. The ride alone is worth it.

People who believe they have encountered ghosts can be very eager to tell their stories, and the chatter of the other riders

may be more frightening than the scripted tour. Although our guide deftly deflected her volunteer “helper,” some participants may be harder to ignore. If you have a child who is particularly impressionable, consider the Children’s Trolley Tour, which has nothing to do with ghosts and is designed for the 5- to 10-year old set.

“Ghosts of Cape May” is a 30-minute ride. The tour begins at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth. Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for children (ages 3-12). Buy your tickets in advance or risk being left on the sidewalk. Trolley tours are sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts (MAC), a non-profit organization that promotes the restoration, interpretation and cultural enrichment of greater Cape May. Call ahead (609-884-5404 or 800-275-4278) for information on wheelchair-accessible tours.

Put a little chill into your July with the Ghosts of Cape May trolley tour. And, if you encounter something chilling in your charming bed-and-breakfast, don’t be surprised if your clock tells you it’s 3am.

Liz Callaway made her Broadway debut in Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along.

She received a Tony nomination for her performance in Baby and for five years appeared as Grizabella in Cats. She has starred in the original Broadway casts of Miss Saigon, The Three Musketeers, and The Look of Love. OffBroadway, she received a Drama Desk nomination for her work in The Spitfire Grill and she also appeared in Godspell, Marry Me A Little, and No Way To Treat A Lady. Liz Callaway was in the legendary Follies in Concert at Lincoln Center. The award-winning Sibling Revelry (created with sister Ann Hampton Callaway) was presented to great acclaim at Donmar Warehouse in London. Liz sang the Academy Award-nominated song “Journey to the Past” in the animated feature Anastasia and is the singing voice of Princess Jasmine in Disney’s Aladdin and the King of Thieves and The Return of Jafar. She is also the singing voice of the title character in The Swan Princess, Lion King 2, Beauty and the Beast and The Brave Little Toaster Goes To Mars.

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

he morning bird walk was over. Just as they’d arrived... as singles, couples, trios and families... the patrons headed back to their cars.

There was beach time to look forward to and breakfast to enjoy.

Me? I lingered in the parking lot of The Nature Conservancy preserve (the Cape May Migratory Bird Refuge, also known to the locals as simply “The Meadows”) just off Sunset Boulevard. I’d already had breakfast and it was going to be a writing day, not a beach day, for me.

The reason I lingered was not to shirk, but to savor.

Savor what? My recent encounter with the latest and greatest people all drawn from that slice of the human pie who like birds and nature.

Note I did not say “bird watchers” or “birders.” In fact and truth, only about half of the group (which numbered just over 20) fit these labels. The other half of the group were just visitors to Cape May who figured they’d spice up their visit by

going on a bird walk.

Two hours. One mile. Easy walking.

Over 60 species of birds.

60 species.

Uh huh. Cape May is a bird-rich place.

And “The Meadows” is one of its ecological gems.

What’s more, summer is absolute prime time for bird viewing pleasure.

There are lots of breeding birds around, including stately herons and egrets; assorted terns; a variety of song birds (including one stunning Blue Grosbeak) and maybe best of all, from now until the end of November, Cape May will be ground zero for millions of migrating birds.

Yes, millions. This past Monday, the group tallied about fifty migrating shorebirds (straight from the Arctic!) as well as Bank Swallow, Orchard Oriole, and two really spiffy Bobolink!

It doesn’t matter whether you can identify these species or not. That’s what the field trip leaders are for. Patrons need only savor them.

But it wasn’t the birds I was thinking about. Not even a Roseate Tern spotted by co-leader Chuck Slugg and confirmed by Karl Lukens.

Roseate Tern is so slender and elegant, it turns Common and Forster’s Terns to clay.

I was thinking about the people. The eager, eyes-open-to-wonder people who show up on CMBO morning trips.

This morning there was a gentleman from Denmark. Left the wife and kids sleeping in the condo. Would be back in time for breakfast.

Then there was the couple from Ohio.

They really, really wanted to see a Lesser Black-backed Gull. Did, too.

A grandmom and granddaughter duo down from Philadelphia. It was the granddaughter's first birding experience. She took to it like a bird to f light.

And the three friends, just here for the weekend from New York City, wanting to do something new.

How could I tell they were neat people, the kind of people you like to be around? It was the smiles.

Smiles as they looked through the spotting scopes and got in-your-face looks at Least Tern chicks and Blue Grosbeak.

Ever seen a male Blue Grosbeak? Blue onto purple with rust-colored chevrons emblazoned on each wing. A designer bird if ever their was one.

And the smiles got wider and more

frequent as the walk went on. By the time everyone reached the parking lot, they were permanent fixtures on every face.

Yep. Nothing quite like a morning going one-on-one with the natural world to bring out the best in people. And the smiles, of course.

So what kind of a day are you having?

The Dating Column

Stella Dixon's take on romance on Old Cape Island

here are guys who are cool (ie – your high school football team).

There are guys who are uncool (ie – your high school chess team).

And then there are guys who simply play it cool (ie – the ones too busy working on their swagger to play football or chess).

Playing it cool is an art, the dating equivalent of a just-rolled-out-of-bed hairstyle. It takes a lot of effort to appear as though you’re putting in no effort at all. In fact, the play-itcool (or PIC), guy often sports this very hairdo, which he styles with $75 worth of product.

He’s got just a little scruff on his face and, though it may not look like it, he paid extra for the holes in that sweatshirt.

The main goal of the PIC guy is to get a girl’s attention by giving her as little as possible. Or, if he does give her attention, it’s the negative sort. My friends call it “mirting,” or mean flirting, and it’s a common practice on the child’s playground. Push a girl off the slide and it means you like her. Pull her pigtails and you’ve got it bad. Among adults, the mirting is more subtle, but it still happens. A guy I went out with last week said, “Woah, Fatty,” when

he saw me reaching for a second slice of pepperoni pizza. He’s practically in love with me.

The second goal of the PIC guy is to communicate with a girl by communicating as little as possible. He does not say hello, at least not verbally. Instead, he’ll lift his chin – an almost nod. He does his best not to smile.

Ideally, he’ll be leaning against something – a wall or fence, perhaps – one hand in his pocket and one thumb hooked through his belt loop.

out, because his only plan is to not appear as though he’s planned ahead. Instead, he’ll nonchalantly ask her to stay in for a low-key night of watching movies, “or whatever,” and being sure to mention that all his other plans fell through.

Before his girl gets there, the PIC guy will straighten up, but not too much. He’ll leave his free weights strewn across the floor, so she has to step over them, and he’ll frame a picture of himself with three bombshell women, never mind that they’re his cousins. During the movie, he’ll comment on how hot Jessica Alba is, even if he’s having trouble keeping his eyes off his own date.

It’s true that girls will fall for the PIC guy.

I’ve become interested in men simply because they seemed so disinterested in me. It’s backwards, I know. But dating, kind of like life in general, can be backwards. The chess players surpass the football players in coolness once high school ends. The good-on-paper guy turns out to be a jerk, and vice versa. And sometimes, it takes chasing after a PIC guy to show you that playing it cool ain’t so hot after all.

Tom Sims, Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews "Page One" and "Horrible Bosses"

ll right all you New York Times readers, this one's for you.

Whether you like reading the newspaper or not, whether you like The New York Times or not, you have to admit that it is one of – if not the – leading source of news information in the world. Sure, go ahead and log on to an online news provider if you want, but next time really study to see how many of those websites do first-hand news reporting versus simply recapping something from another news source. Then count the other news sources.

Guaranteed at least one of them is from The New York Times.

Page One is a new documentary about The New York Times and how it manages to stay in business (somewhat tenuously it would seem) in an electronic age. The film follows reporter David Carr, who’s focus at the paper is media trends. Carr is as interesting a character as any film could hope for, and his antics tell the story. While this film has the blessing of the Times (i.e., most disparaging remarks about the paper are followed by a rebuttal that trumps the criticism), the film does still manage to get its

High marks for the film and for media outlets that generate their own information (like the one you’re holding right now) and don’t just float on sources that originate the news upstream.

Horrible Bosses is a new film with Jason

Is paying the electric bill painful?

It doesn’t have to be.

Bateman and a host of other stars. Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston and Colin Farrell portray three of today’s worst bosses. Bateman and his two friends, played by It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Charlie Day and SNL’s Jason Sudeikis, work for these bosses separately and ultimately decide their lives would be better if these supervisors from hell were dead. The cast saves this film with appearances from Donald Sutherland and Jamie Foxx as well.

But don’t pick apart the premise – you’ll only criticize it for being recycled (regurgitated) from classics like Strangers on a Train (1951) and its spawn, Throw Momma from the Train (1987). Avoid any in-depth study of character, storyline, plot and reason in Horrible Bosses.

Maybe what I’m saying is if you’re in it for the laughs, Horrible Bosses delivers. You might want to catch this one in theaters to get that mob mentality when it comes to getting those laughs. This film is more a reflection of today’s troubled job market rather than a commentary on it, and the mindless adolescent humor is well employed.

E are finally in the swing of summer and except for a glitch with the fireworks on July 4th, it seems to be a banner year. I was driving out of town on July 3 and the traffic was backed up all the way to the light in front of Tranquility coming into town. I have not seen traffic like that since I was a kid. It shows that activity has picked up, as do the nine transactions we had in the last two weeks.

We'll start in Cape May Point, where 309 Stites was co-listed by the fatherson duo of Brian and Gregg Giancola of Coldwell Banker Sol Needles and Barry Bruno of Chris Clemans SIR. It was sold

by Ellie O'Donogue of Jersey Cape Realty for $865,000.

Now we move to West Cape May where... Wait, there were no sales in West Cape May. We'll put you first next week!
