The Police Blotter

PALM BEACH, Florida – Two men got into an argument about a parking space in the 13100 block of Quiet Woods Road. One of the men became so angry he punched the other man in the face. He was arrested and issued a notice to appear in court.

Classic Quotations

A Story From The Past “You just won’t believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big [space] is. I mean, you may think it’s a long way down the road to the drug store, but that’s just peanuts to space.” Douglas Adams “That intelligent creatures exist in outer space is proven by the fact that they have not contacted us.” Loesje “The creative conquest of space will serve as a wonderful substitute for war.” James S. McDonnell “The space between your heart and mine is the space we’ll fill with time.” Dave Matthews “This is Major Tom to Ground Control, I’m stepping through the door, and I’m floating in a most peculiar way.” David Bowie

The year 1851 brought the construction of yet another new boarding house, the United States Hotel. Built by A. W. Tompkins, the hotel was a huge four-story structure which sat on ten acres spanning from Decatur to Ocean streets, along Washington Street. The United States quickly became one of the most popular hostelries in town, with its wide, sweeping verandas, brilliant ocean views and evening entertainment that amused guests and local alike. ASTERISM An asterism is a pattern of stars in the sky that is not one of the official 88 constellations; they are composed of stars not physically related to each other and can be vast distances apart. An asterism can be composed of stars from one or more constellations, as in the case of the Big Dipper.

Random Fact Of The Week

Each year the moon moves about 3.8 centimeters from Earth, slowing Earth’s rotation by about 0.002 seconds per day, per century. Scientists don’t know how the moon was created, but theorize a Mars-sized object hit the Earth, causing the moon to splinter off.

Fortune Cookie Of The Week J “Big things coming in future. Only matter of time.” J Once a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with sesame beef. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editors

T

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

he parking/towing debacles are piling up around here. A couple of weeks back we discussed the hapless visitor whose car was towed on Monday, June 20 from Windsor Avenue. A reader has since advised us that road work contractors woke his family and apparently every other family on Windsor Avenue at 7am on that same day by pounding on their doors and advising them to move their cars or have them towed. Call us crazy (it’s been done), but we think that PROPER SIGNAGE, displayed ALL WEEKEND, would have been an excellent idea. And just for fun, we’ll repeat that none of this would have even been necessary had the road work been completed before June. We again contacted City Manager Bruce MacLeod to verify this, and he confirmed thatcontractors were banging on doors on that Monday. “Yes, doors were knocked on in the morning to ask home owners and visitors to move vehicles. The road was scheduled for paving on that day. Notice was provided on Thursday and Friday preceding the weekend. That said, new visitors/renters may have arrived over the weekend and were not aware of the paving scheduled for that day. The paving was scheduled for the previous week, but was delayed due to rain events.” Now, everyone realizes that the weather is out of the city’s control, but come on. When we questioned whether it was fair that a visitor to the city should be charged $350 for towing, when MacLeod himself admitted that signage was only posted on Thursday and Friday, his response was: “I do not have all the facts regarding this individual case other than the information you have included in your various emails, and the information

provided by the Police Department. I do not know why this individual was not available to move the vehicle when the others in the neighborhood were moved. I am not going to be the judge and jury on this matter. If the vehicle owner thought the car was improperly ticketed and towed, then he/she has the right to contest the ticket in Municipal Court. That is the proper venue to determine if the city’s actions were correct.” Again, really? So not only is the city treating a tourist to the singular experience of walking out of his rental house in the morning and finding no car, but follows by saying, essentially, “If you’ve got a problem with it, see you in court.” We suspect this does not make for ‘happy how-I-spent-mysummer-vacation’ stories. Now for a bit of news that WILL enhance your summer: the Cape May Point General Store is back in action and better than ever. The store has been a fixture in Cape May Point since the 1930s, providing necessities to locals in a neighborhood that’s short on businesses. In 2009 Jennifer Buchanan and Geoffrey Colvin got approval to refurbish the building, and what a refur-

³

bishing it is – simple, elegant and tranquil, with the added bonus of artwork from nextdoor neighbor Carol King Hood adorning the dining room walls. Two Exit Zero staffers had the chance to enjoy dinner on the deck there this past weekend, and the whole experience was just about pitch perfect. We sat on the back porch where the landscaping set the perfect mood, the weather was great (though we can’t credit the General Store for that), and the dishes (including a tender seared tuna appetizer and a chicken marsala entree) were prepared and plated just right by chef Jeff Nace. We were also happy to hear that many of the employees are “Cape May Point people,” which is always a good thing in a small town like this. They are currently serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, all week. Whether you live in the Point or hail from somewhere further afield, we’d advise you grab a bottle of wine and enjoy a meal at the Cape May Point General Store – more than a place for penny candies and sundries, this is a rare chance to dine in one of the more tranquil corners of the island. If you’re still making weekend plans, we’d recommend you try the Center for Community Arts’ Party at the Beach this Sunday. Held at the Beach Club at 1860 Maryland Avenue, Chris Shriver of the Depot Market will be catering, DJ Mojo of WCFA-LP will be spinning tunes, and there will be plenty of activities to keep you amused. The CCA does so much to foster creativity and education for kids and adults, and nothing beats attending a party to help a good cause. Tickets are $50 for adults, half that for kids and the party runs from 6 to 9pm. For tickets, call 884-7525.

The Ebbitt Room Gets A Makeover

The Virginia’s acclaimed restaurant goes casual with a new bar and a menu of American favorites

nyone who has taken a stroll down Jackson Street can tell you that the Virginia Hotel, located a half block from the beach, is one of the magnificent Victorians Cape May is known for. But there’s more to it than that. When Curtis Bashaw, who is now the General Managing Partner of Cape Rersorts Group, purchased the building in 1986, his intention was to blend the ambiance of a Victorian bed and breakfast with the amenities of a modern motel. Since its grand reopening, the Virginia has been a hybrid. Once again, Cape Resorts Group has combined two things not often paired together. This time, it’s the Ebbitt Room, the Virginia’s critically acclaimed restaurant, that is going hybrid. The restaurant has long been regarded as a fine dining jewel, but it shifted gears this spring when the all-new Ebbitt Room was launched, complete with a brand new piano

Ebbitt Room ? From Page 17 bar. The result is less formal, but as stylish as ever, with a menu that is both exciting and accessible. “It’s still a wonderful place to have dinner,” said General Manager Justin Mogavero, “but we reinvigorated the space.” In the dining room, hardwood floors have replaced red carpeting. Half of the columns and a wall have been removed, creating a free-flowing space that interior designer Colleen Bashaw credits with “livening things up.” The new décor (some of it from The Christian Admiral) pays homage to the hotel’s American heritage. Most importantly, what used to be a small service cubby is now a U-shaped bar with plenty of seating. Mogavero believes adding this bar was essential for creating the fun energy that should be present in any seaside establishment. He says The Ebbitt Room is now “warm, relaxing, and inviting.” People, whether dressed to the nines or just coming off a nine-hour beach day, feel comfortable stopping in for a drink. And when they do, they’ll have a great deal to choose from. A new drink menu highlights the classics, like the Hemingway Daiquiri and Singapore Gin Sling, as well as exciting non-alcoholic options and never-before-seen cocktails. Liquor consultant Lawrence Green has been teaching The Ebbitt Room bartenders

to infuse their own syrups with farm-fresh herbs, and this summer, they’ll also be making their own bitters. “If we want a flavor,” Green said, “we’ll make it naturally.” Adventurous eaters will be excited by nightly specials, but the menu is now more relaxed. “This is traditional American cuisine, prepared well,” Executive Chef Lucas Manteca said. Unpretentious favorites, such as steak and cake, are available, and the bar menu contains options – like a burger and fries – that were “never before heard of at The Ebbitt Room.” This year, much of the meat and produce used by the Ebbitt Room kitchen and bar will come from the 62-acre Beach Plum Farm in West Cape May. “We will keep the food as pure as possible,” Manteca said. The Virginia porch, overlooking beautiful Jackson Street, is the quintessential summer spot, and the perfect place to enjoy a pitcher of “punch on the porch,” or one of restaurant’s new dishes. Dining room manager, Jahanna Edson, compares relaxing on this Victorian porch to being in a lemonade commercial. “In every one of those,” she says, “there is a dripping glass and a comfortable chair, and you can practically feel the summer breeze wafting over you as life rolls by before you. That’s our porch. Come on over.” If you want, come on over right after the beach.

Every week our photographer Danielle O’Neal roams the streets of Cape May on a mission... to give away a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. But it’s not quite THAT easy – first, the lucky recipient has to answer three questions related to our issue theme, which this week is all about space. This week’s winner is Mary Beth, 46, a school psychologist from Columbus, Ohio. We found Mary Beth strolling along the Washington Street Mall. Here are her answers to our piercing questions: Is Pluto a planet? No. What teacher died in the Challenger crash? Christa McAuliffe. What musician sings “Space Oddity”? David Bowie. Mary Beth wins a $50 gift certificate to The Bird House of Cape May for answering our questions. Congratulations and enjoy! PHOTOGRAPH BY Danielle o’neal

A Spoonful Of Bliss

Nicole Pense and Mike Boschen’s new ice creamery in Carpenter’s Square Mall serves up frozen goodness

D

id you hear the one about the couple who travelled 40,000 miles to open an ice cream shop in Cape May? The aptly named Bliss, in the Carpenter’s Square Mall, is the newest destination in town for ice cream lovers, and owners Nicole Pense and Mike Boschen mean business. Their ice cream is homemade, organic, and triple-premium. Regular EZ readers will remember the July color issue story we ran on Nicole and Mike last year. They journeyed across the nation to find the perfect seaside town and ended up right here in Cape May with their two small daughters, Sage and Hudson. Mike became a realtor for DeSatnick, and Nicole set about figuring out what to do next. We chatted with Nicole at the West Cape May Farmers Market last week, where she was serving her frozen elixirs to the appreciative, sweltering masses. Nicole tells us that her original plan was to open a bakery – “I LOVE to bake,” she says, but then she received an ice cream maker as a birthday gift. Her fate was sealed. I asked

her how she comes by her recipes. “All of this is just the result of lots of research and lots of trial and error. I wanted to give my kids ice cream, but there’s just so much stuff in the commercial brands that I figured the easiest way to do it would be to make my own.” With flavors like maple bacon, lavender honey, cinnamon clove and lemon basil sorbet, as well as old standbys like their amazing chocolate, this is destination ice cream, not your run-of-the-mill dairy

treats. “I use much less sugar than is used in commercial ice creams – until I researched it, I never realized how much sugar they use. I also have at least one flavor every day that is made with agave or honey, for people who are watching their sugar intake.” Local ice cream experts are on board; Nicole opened for business on July 2 and completely sold out of everything by the Fourth. “So far, I’ve been selling out of everything within a day or two, which has been great, because I would never sell anything that was older than a couple of days anyway. I don’t use any preservatives, so I just wouldn’t feel right about it.” I asked her if Mike and the kids are the official tasters, and she laughed and said “If you ask Sage what her favorite flavor is, she will literally say ‘all of them.’ But I think her favorite is coffee. And it’s organic decaf! I grind the beans myself.” As for Mike’s role in this burgeoning ice cream empire? “He is my official cheerleader. He’s out there on the mall, handing out flyers, and people have come in to tell me how persuasive he is! He’s the best support system I could ever ask for.”

Cape May Cooks

A culinary column by Knickerbocker and the Southern Belle

T

here’s an old joke about the new bride who was asked what she was going to make for dinner on a hot day. “Reservations!” she said. Newlywed or not, sometimes it’s too hot to cook, even in Cool Cape May. So this week your local culinary coaches offer two hot-weather menus that are entirely stovefree. You’ll just need to look inside your refrigerator for leftovers that can be put to good use, and visit Cape May’s wonderful markets.

1 bell pepper, any color, diced ½ c red onion, chopped ½ c cilantro leaves, chopped salt and pepper to taste In a large bowl, whisk together olive oil, lime juice and garlic, if using. Shave the corn kernels from the cob and add to dressing with beans, pepper and onion. Toss until mixed. Cover and chill for about three hours. Add cilantro and salt and pepper to taste and toss again before serving.

Too Hot to Cook! Menu #1 Melon, Mozzarella and Prosciutto Skewers 20 minutes makes 20 skewers 20 one-inch melon cubes (cantaloupe or honeydew) 20 thin slices prosciutto (approx. ½ lb) 20 fresh small mozzarella cheese balls Thread a melon cube, prosciutto slice, and mozzarella ball onto each of 20 four or sixinch wooden skewers. For your main course, we suggest a purchased cold seafood salad (shrimp, lobster, crabmeat) on a bed of lettuce surrounded by tomato wedges and accompanied by – Black Bean and Corn Salad with Cilantro and Lime 15 minutes, 3 hours refrigeration serves 6-8 Make this EZ salad with leftover grilled or steamed corn and canned beans. 1/2 c olive oil juice of 1 lime 1 garlic clove, minced (optional) 2 ears grilled or steamed corn 2 cans (15 oz) black beans, low-sodium if available, drained and rinsed

Fresh Fruit Salad 10 minutes We’ve learned that the typical male leaves whole pieces of fruit to rot in a bowl on the counter. But cut several pieces into chunks, mix and serve; then watch this tasty fruit salad disappear! whatever fruit you have on hand: peaches, berries, grapes, apples, plums, cherries, bananas, etc. – peeled if needed, and cut into bite-size pieces lemon juice sugar or honey chopped mint (optional) In an appropriate size bowl, toss the fruit with a couple splashes of lemon juice, a sprinkle of granulated (or powdered) sugar ( or use a teaspoon or two of honey). Garnish with chopped mint before serving.

Cape May Cooks ? From Page 41 Too Hot to Cook! Menu #2 Antipasto Skewers 20 minutes, several hours to chill serves 8 In answer to why we are offering two appetizers on skewers, we have two responses: (1) they are festive and attractive; (2) the heat makes some people irritable, and wielding pointed objects helps keep them away! 4 oz mozzarella cheese, cut into 8 cubes 8 (4-in.) salami slices 7 oz can small artichoke hearts, drained and halved 1 c cherry or grape tomatoes 8 large pitted Spanish olives 8 (6-in.) wooden skewers 8 oz bottled balsamic-basil vinaigrette salad dressing 1 tbsp lemon juice Wrap one salami slice around each cube of cheese. Thread cubes, artichoke hearts, tomatoes and olives alternately onto the skewers. Place them flat in a plastic container or baking dish. Stir together the vinaigrette and lemon juice, pour mixture over the skewers, cover tightly and chill a few hours. Discard the marinade. Once again, for the main course, make it EZ and forage in your fridge for some leftover hard-boiled eggs, salmon, chicken or whatever looks appetizing. Or check out the local markets for prepared salads, cheeses and smoked fish. Smoked salmon, blue fish, and scallops make delicious smoked additions to a cold platter, along with a variety of cheeses, crackers and bread. Cucumber Salad 15 minutes, plus 1 hour to chill serves 4 The thought of being ‘cool as a cucumber’ sounds especially appealing on a steamy day. This salad fits the bill –

refreshing, with an added zing. 1 large cucumber, peeled, seeded and chopped into ½ inch cubes ¼ c chopped red onion half of a jalapeño pepper, seeded and finely chopped ½ to 1 cup plain yogurt (we prefer Greek-style) ½ tsp ground cumin ¼ c chopped cilantro salt to taste Combine all ingredients. Cover and chill until time to serve, at least an hours. Cantaloupe a la Mode 5 minutes serves 6-8 The ultimate in simple desserts – it is so EZ, yet elegant. 1 large ripe cantaloupe, sliced into 6-8 wedges vanilla ice cream blueberries Peel and seed the cantaloupe wedges. Put a scoop (or more!) of vanilla ice cream on each, and top with blueberries.

Still having trouble confronting the kitchen? While you’re assembling the meal, treat yourself to a cool summer cocktail like the one below. Cape May Breeze for each serving 2 oz raspberry flavored vodka splash of cranberry juice splash of orange juice lemon lime soda mint to garnish Pour the vodka, cranberry juice and orange juice in an old-fashioned (8 oz) glass filled with ice. Mix and add lemon lime soda to fill. Garnish with mint.

The Cape May Space Cannon

Now the Space Shuttle is gone, we are proud to unveil the only smart way to get Americans into space. Thanks to forward planning, we own a genuine German WW2 railway gun, that used to fire half-ton shells 50 miles from France to England, but now can propel a properly padded human out of the Earth’s atmosphere into space. For only $900 a head we will outfit you for your adventure and send you on your way, on a course likely to bring you down in the Atlantic. We have a rowing boat standing by with a long hook, for professional retrieval within a week.

Just call (609) 770-8479 for details, and for a special 2 per cent discount, say “show me your colossal cannon”

Customer Service

I

The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone

am not always great at reading people. Look no further than my last two boyfriends for proof of that. This is problematic in the restaurant, where it’s part of my job to read people, particularly their expectations. Everyone who comes in for dinner is looking for something different, and it’s my responsibility to figure out what that is. Some folks want their server to be a part of their dining experience. They ask for my name, my recommendations, my nationality, sometimes even my hobbies. They’ll want to joke with me, to f lirt with me, or to learn from me. Above all, they want to have a good time, and they want me to be a part of it: the more the merrier. Others want their waitress to be as elusive as possible, showing up only with refills and extra napkins. These folks would rather not know my name or anything about me. I try my best to meet these expectations. I’ve gotten better at determining which table is which, but even after seven years, I’m still stumped sometimes. The couple I waited on last night was

joking with me and one another from the time they sat down. He dropped a cherry in his lap, and she laughed so hard she almost spit her water across the table. She mispronounced the name of a wine, and he gave her a playful nudge and called her a nincompoop. The child-like banter, in a room that can be stuffy from time to time, was refreshing. Clearly, this was a table more relaxed than most, or so I thought. When I opened his Sauvignon blanc, the gentleman lamented the way a twistoff bottle ruins the wine experience. “I don’t know about all that,” I said. “I still drink wine that comes out of a box, so I don’t necessarily mind the screw caps.”

DID YOU KNOW? All hot dog vendors in Cape May are individually owned and operated by local veterans. The couple laughed, and not a polite laugh, but a genuine knee-slapper of a laugh, even though I was being serious. “Yeah,” I continued, thrilled to be waiting on such jovial people, even if I didn’t get what was so funny. “When I was in college, we’d pull the plastic bags from the wine boxes, drink from those, then blow them up and use them as pillows.” Silence. Crickets. Appalled faces. Embarrassed, I backed away from the table, deciding that I’d misread the expectations of this particular couple. That’s the thing about dining out – it almost never turns out to be what you expect. The food takes longer or shorter than you’d hoped, it’s more delicious or not quite as good as you’d anticipated, and your server is better or worse at reading your expectations than you’d imagined. If I’ve learned anything from my time serving tables in Cape May, it’s that in the restaurant – and outside of it, for that matter – it’s wise to expect the unexpected. That, and, you know, drunken college stories are probably best kept to oneself.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady My cousin “Sally” is about to marry an idiot. Do I have to go to the wedding? – “Molly” Dear “Molly” That depends – is the wedding at the new Ocean Club Hotel? The Answer Lady jests, of course, and while she appreciates a succinct letter as much as the next person, yours takes the (wedding) cake. Certainly if one cannot guarantee one’s own good behavior at a wedding – or any social event, for that matter – one should decline the invitation. Do you have personal knowledge of your cousin’s intended’s idiocy, or are you just extrapolating from having met him once or twice? Is this person abusive to your cousin, already married to someone else, a serial cheater, chronically jobless, or is it simply a matter of you not liking him

Wise answers to perplexing questions

too much? If it’s any of the former, and you are relatively close to your cousin, express your concerns to her. If it’s the latter, the Answer Lady suggests that you put on your big-girl panties and go to the wedding. It’s not as if you are being asked to be the Maid of Honor for the happy couple. If you love your cousin, and to your knowledge her fiancé is not a mass murderer, then attend the festivities and bite your tongue. Any wedding in Cape May is worth attending – just look at it as an excuse to enjoy good

food and free drinks for a couple of hours. And remember the Answer’s Lady’s credo – if we spent all of our time and energy trying to talk loved ones out of stupid ideas, we’d never have time for things like eating and sleeping. Dear Answer Lady I took a great picture of my sister and brother-in-law dancing at their wedding. Considering I was not able to give them as generous a gift as I would like, I wonder if it be okay to make the photo a part of the wedding gift, even though it is after the fact? – Better Dear Better The Answer Lady thinks this is a splendid idea. You may want to consider blowing up the photo and having it professionally matted and framed at Flanegan Art and Framing – they do some truly excellent work. Common wedding etiquette dictates that one has up to a year to send a gift to a newly married couple, so by all means, go ahead with your plan. Candid wedding photos are often priceless, so I’m sure your gift will be greatly appreciated no matter when it is received.

I

t’s been pointed out in these pages that I may not be the most positive person in the world. I see the glass as half empty, opines Stella Dixon, not half full. Either way, it’s time for another drink, says I. Which makes it so convenient that my birthday is this weekend. Because year after year, my birthday finds exciting new ways to suck. Women are brought up to be positive. Their childhood games involve happy homemaking and cute outfits for dolls. Even the Girl Scouts are all about delicious smileinducing cookies. Boys’ games are about killing the enemy, someone always ends up the loser, and blood isn’t uncommon. The Boy Scout motto is “Be Prepared.” It’s not that we’re set up for depression, it’s just that we have our noses rubbed in reality from a young age. The technical name for someone like me is a defensive pessimist. Instead of unbridled and unfounded optimism, we assume that something will go wrong, and rather than being gloomy about it we simply make plans to deal with the worst-

case scenario. We know what to do when our PowerPoint doesn’t work for the big presentation. If we lose our keys, there’s a spare hidden somewhere on our car. When our girlfriend leaves us to give it one more try with her ex, we’ve already made sure that we’re not too emotionally invested. In fact, defensive pessimists tend to be very successful, because we’re ready for anything and don’t ride huge emotional roller coasters when things don’t go our way.

And things don’t go my way on my birthday. It’s got nothing to do with age; getting older doesn’t concern me. But I’m not joking when I say my birthday has a body count. There have been deaths, dead animals and flying debris smashing my windshield. I broke my leg dancing (although any birthday that ends with a bottle of prescription painkillers isn’t all bad), set my house on fire, missed my own surprise party (twice!), and let’s not forget the year when the Los Angeles Health Department rolled out their anti-STD campaign by naming a giant costumed syphilis sore after me. Really, I would love nothing more than to enjoy a peaceful birthday dinner. I don’t need a full glass, just one that doesn’t shatter in my hand. Want to help me blow out some candles? Send an email to info@exitzero.us, I’ll be in touch, and we’ll go to dinner at one of the Cape’s fine restaurants. Afterwards I’ll write all about it, a combined date and restaurant review. Your name will be changed, the restaurant’s won’t. I’m positive that you’re just what I need for a relaxing birthday.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

n space, no one can hear you tie your cravat. Mind you, the ends do float around something awful, and there is simply no way to have a gentle breeze ruffle the silk fetchingly, as intended. There is the Solar Wind, and I daresay it might give the desired effect were a chap to sport a light-weight aluminium foil cravat, but that would be a little gauche. That’s not to say we were not a stylish lot, we astronauts: Glenn used to wear an impressive cowboy hat, Aldrin was all about his tailored spacesuit (cut to f latter the hips and thighs) and Armstrong favored tasseled loafers whilst performing tricky maneuvers: he had to remove the boots from his suit, endangering his life in the event of depressurization, fire or alien attack, but said he could feel the module breathe through the fine leather soles. Of course, he did lose one loafer whilst playing soccer on the Moon – the thing flew right off and to this day lies in a crater, awaiting those Chinese spacefarers who will surely arrive there any day soon and claim it as their own (the Moon, I mean

– I doubt they will have much interest in the loafer, which was on the large size). Of course, Neil lost a foot to instant exposure to vacuum, but no one commented, as it would have been the height of bad manners. We were less debonair on the Mars mission, of course: when under fire from Martians and their damnable Death Ray Guns, fashion goes out the porthole. That’s not to say we didn’t have little touches: the barrels on my Space Blaster were chased in silver filigree and the stocks were studded

with rubies that glinted in the red light. Or would have, had I not forgotten that Mars’ light IS red, and so the gems appeared rather wan. And we soon collected some rather natty Martian accessories that spruced up our spacesuits nicely: I possessed a flared hat that I had taken off the remains of a Soldier Drone. Well, I refer to it as a “hat,” though it may well have been a piece of armor, or possibly even the top of the poor fella’s head (we never really did work out what way was up, or even what side was front, for that matter). In truth the whole war was a bit of a misunderstanding in the first place. The first chat at Area 51 got off on the wrong foot when one of our boffins set the Universal Translator to “Klingon” by mistake and the Martians’ greeting of “Hullo there, we offer you all we have, including the secret of clean energy and everlasting life,” was then translated as, “We will kill all your dogs.” Well, after that we had no option but total genocide: it would have been too embarrassing to admit the mistake.

Most scientists use this theory to explain the birth of the universe, which began as an extremely hot and dense ball of matter and later expanded outward and cooled. 13 . This means “from outside earth.” It’s also the long-form version of a Spielberg film and a Katy Perry song. 14 . This is the eighth brightest star in the night sky. ere’s the thing about happy hour in Cape May – it’s not really about the alcohol. Happy hour is loosely defined as that late-afternoon time when taverns offer discounts to draw customers. The term comes – as so many good drinking terms do – from sailors. In the 1920s, the United States Navy apparently had a scheduled daily entertainment period to relieve the stress of shipboard life. Depending on your source, “happy” either described the activity or the slightly drunk state you had to be in to enjoy it. Tavern owners borrowed the term, and by the 1960s, happy hour was common. The 1980s saw the rise of free or discounted food as well as drink, and happy hour as an after-work activity was born. In Cape May, the atmosphere is less “after-work” and more “after-beach.” Tropical flavors and frozen drinks dominate the specials, and thirst-quenching nonalcoholic beverages are common. Frolicking in the surf stimulates the appetite, so most taverns offer “early bird” dinner specials or discounted appetizers that can serve as

dinner. Sipping an icy beverage while waiting for your gourmet dinner is not a bad way to end a beach day. Happy hour in Cape May tends to be casual, so no one will look askance if you show up with wet hair, fresh from the shower. Places with outdoor bars, like The Rusty Nail and Harry’s, are casual enough to welcome

people straight from the beach. The Rusty Nail, famous for attracting the lifeguards, offers music at 4:30 daily, and the firepit, even when unlit, becomes the center of the action. Harry’s offers music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We went on a sweltering Thursday, seeking only food, and were surprised by the quality of the entertainment. We were already impressed by the drink and appetizer specials when the music began, and singer Nicki Sbaffoni (Thursdays from 4-8pm) pleased our whole group with covers ranging from ’60s folk to millennial pop. Choosing a happy hour destination may be a matter of geography – most people like one close to their hotel. Or, you may be drawn in by the music you hear from the street. The Mad Batter, with a bar built for making friends, is a local favorite. Carney’s lets you keep an eye on your teenagers playing mini-golf. Boaters and fishermen favor Lucky Bones and Harbor View. Many bars, like Cabanas, are even kidfriendly. Toast the beach at a Cape May happy hour! Next week: Tour a Victorian Bed and Breakfast

Ester really needs a forever home. She came to the shelter when her owner needed to go into a nursing home. Can you can spare some love for this old girl? She’s great with kids, cats and dogs. She also loves car rides and adores playing fetch. She’ll even drop the ball for you. There’s still a lot of life and love for her left to give... she just needs you to help her show it! Come by the shelter and meet her. Adoption fee is $35.

«

Peppy is lonely here at the shelter. On top of everything else, a 10-year-old dog in a shelter really doesn’t stand a chance of adoption compared to all of the younger, more cute and more active doggies. He really needs a quiet home to live out his golden years. If you’re looking for a loyal companion who is housebroken and likes to ride in a car please meet him. He would be eternally grateful. Adoption fee is $8.

«

Aubrey is a very sweet young gal who loves to be around people. She’s very energetic, has lots of enthusiasm, and will need lots of exercising. We recommend she go to a family with older children and to a home where she will get the proper training she needs. If you have the patience and are willing to dedicate the time needed for training please stop by and meet Aubrey today. You’ll both be happy you did. Adoption fee is $95.

Comet, an adult gray-and-white tabby, is a lucky guy! Found outside right in the middle of two horrific snowstorms, someone kindly brought him to the shelter. Though his fur is a bit thin, he’s gradually putting on weight and starting to feel a sense of hope. Won’t you give Comet the home he deserves? Adoption fee is $20.

«

HEIDI is a distinctive tortoiseshell adult female cast. One look at her and you know she’s something special, from the special markings on her cute-as-a-button face to her sweet and gentle demeanor. Heidi would like nothing more than a loving owner to take her to her own forever home. Come and meet here today! Adoption fee is $20.

Baby is a lovely calico cat. She’s really sweet, and can make you very happy. She’s only six years young. She doesn’t like other cats... she’d rather spend time with you. Reserve tickets for this quick, witty comedy now by calling 884-1341 or going online to capemaystage.com. Three New York Equity actors are the perfect cast for this funny and poignant play that was hailed, “a masterpiece of comic clockwork timing.” The town has embraced the actors and you’ll love seeing them in this romantic triangle. This Monday, July 25, at 8pm is your opportunity to see another Broadway luminary in Cape May Stage’s Second Stage Women of Broadway series. Maureen McGovern is bringing her new show to Cape May before opening in New York this autumn. You’ll remember Maureen McGovern from singing “The Morning After” and “We May Never Love Like This Again” – both winning Oscars for Best Song. She is using Paul Simon’s lyric to title her show called dangling conversations... We are thrilled to offer you artists that play on Broadway, at Carnegie Hall, or the Hollywood Bowl in our intimate Robert Shackleton Playhouse where you are never more than seven rows away. After the show, ticket holders will have an opportunity to meet Maureen at the Washington Inn’s Wine Bar and enjoy a complimentary signature drink. On August 8, Tovah Feldshuh comes to our stage to perform her concert, Aging Is Optional, before it moves to New York. Bird Droppings

E

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

very day is a miracle, right? But where is it? Well, welcome to the land of miracles with your host, Ma Nature. Guess what miracle the winsome old matron is serving up today? It’s shorebirds. Aren’t you lucky that you are in just the right place to get a heaping helping. But before repast, review. What you probably think of as shorebirds are not. Shorebirds, technically speaking, are a group of birds that fall largely into the Family Charadriidae (Plovers) and Scolopacidae (Sandpipers). The birds most visitors lump under the heading “shorebirds” include herons, gulls and terns. We’re not talking about those birds. We’re talking about an extraordinary group of highly specialized birds whose lives are wedded to tidal f lats and highlevel winds. Birds that breed on one end of the planet and spend the northern winter anywhere from here (Cape May) to the southern tip of North America. The American nature writer Peter

Matthiessen once dubbed them the “Wind Birds,” a label as evocative as it is apt. For the next few weeks, the winds will be ferrying thousands of these waifs south and depositing them at our feet. What do they look like? By and large they look like the sandpipers that run up and down the beach and play tag with the waves.

Most of these birds don’t breed here. Those small sandpipers on the beach all bred in the Arctic. By July, the breeding season is over for some, winding down for the rest. What you are seeing are migrants, not breeding birds. 'Oh,' you are thinking, 'those little itty bitty birds. I’d rather look at herons and egrets, and gulls and terns.' Agreed, herons and egrets, birds that festoon the marshes and back bays, are neat birds. Big, showy crowd-pleasers all. But shorebirds are a refined and acquired taste. Like cognac vs peppermint schnapps; Bach vs Lady GaGa. Shorebirds are evolution's top of the line. When the guys up in research and development rolled out the shorebird model, they all got bonuses and took the rest of the day off. First, consider that many of these shorebirds travel thousands of miles on a single tank of gas. One day, the Arctic. Two days later, Cape May.

Bird Droppings ? From Page 113 Consider too, that the wings of these tiny birds link the Arctic and New Jersey. You hear about global warming and loss of ice caps and you may think, “What the heck does that have to do with me?” Now you see that it does have a great deal to do with you. These birds, ambassadors from northern lands, are telling you “Look; we’re all in this together.” How many different species? Several dozen in North America. Too many to go into now. But among my favorites, birds that you can see yourself by going on a field trip to the South Cape May Meadows, are Lesser and Greater Yellowlegs, Shortbilled Dowitcher, Semipalmated Plover, Western Sandpiper, and if you are really lucky, a Stilt Sandpiper, Marbled Godwit, Long-billed Dowitcher... Funny names, right? Evocative names, too. Exotic. But don’t dawdle. Now you see them, now you don’t. By September most will be gone. The time to see shorebirds is now. Herons, egrets, gulls and terns? They’ll be here into November. They can wait. Want to experience your own miracle

The Long-billed Dowitcher – just one of many shorebirds. of shorebirds? Join Pete Dunne from the Cape May Bird Observatory on a field trip any Monday morning beginning at 7:30am that meets at The Nature Conservancy (South Cape May Meadows) parking lot on Sunset Boulevard. Or you can stop by the Cape May Bird Observatory and ask any of the staff or volunteers what walks are happening throughout the week. They’ll be glad to show you and you’ll see why the Cape May Bird Observatory is THE place to come for all your nature needs – and not to be missed. The CMBO, located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape

May Point (884-2736), is open every day 9:30am to 4:30pm except Tuesdays throughout July and August. While you're there check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars, pick up a free map and schedule of daily walks and programs for the season, take a look at the sighting sheets to check what's being seen, scan the bookshelves or pick up a bargain from the used and vintage books section, look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise (including a terrific lithograph done just for the Cape May Bird Observatory), or just browse around. Sit outside on our garden benches and enjoy the birds at the feeders and the view of Lake Lily. If you can’t make it in person, visit us online www.BirdCapeMay.org – where birding Cape May is only a click away! Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey's own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at the CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.

HAVE been writing this column for a while now, and no matter who I’ve dated, I have not said those three little words – the three little words that aren’t really little at all – until now. It’s taken a long time, an absurd amount of men, and a whole lot of fumbling for me to get here, but it’s finally happened to me. Some folks probably won’t see the big deal, but for me this is huge. Those three little words that I’m finally prepared to say carry a whole lot of weight, more than any others I can think of. In the past, even when I’ve desperately wanted to shout them from the rooftop, I’ve stopped myself, because saying them is scary. Saying them means that I am vulnerable. A part of me doesn’t even want to admit that they are true. But if I want to be successful in love, then I need to put myself out there. So here goes. I. Am. Bored. Granted, this is a difficult thing for me to acknowledge; I’ve always believed that a bored person is a boring person. And if this is the case, then I must be Cape May’s least interesting woman because, when it comes to dating,

I am now painfully, stupidly, mind-numbingly bored. Most of the guys I’ve dated have fallen into one of two categories – the good guys who have no idea how to talk to a woman, and the bad guys who have every idea how to talk to a woman. I’m less upset by the fact that it never works out with these men than I am by the fact that dating them has become so unbelievably monotonous. I want to be shocked. I want you to tell me

something original. Ask me about something other than my favorite band. Flirt with me via something other than a Facebook post. Throw me against a wall when I least expect it and kiss me until my lips go numb. Take me to see something besides a movie. Teach me something new. Excite me. And if you want to use me and lose me, then for God’s sake, please at least give me something to be truly devastated about. Surprise me. Dump me like a man. Standing me up won’t cut it; I’ve already been there, done that. Breaking up with me via BlackBerry won’t cut it, either; that’s old hat. And dropping me like a hot potato immediately following sex? I’ve come to expect it. Show me something I haven’t seen before. I can’t pine away for you if you insist on being a walking cliché, and I do want to pine away for you. I want my legs to shake just from standing beside you. But recently, all I feel is bored. I’ve just started dating a new man, and who knows, maybe someday we’ll be telling one another how much we love each other. But for right now, the only three words I have for this guy are: Break the mold.

The Movie Column

T

Tom Sims, Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews "Another Earth"

here have only been a few films I’ve been really excited about. If you read this column at all then you’ll know some of them – True Grit (2010) and Toy Story 3 (2010) are two good examples. But there is a special place in my column for those rare finds. I call them “The Best Movies You Haven’t Seen.” Some films in this eclectic mix include It’s Kind of a Funny Story (2010), starring Keir Gilchrist and Zach Galifianakis, about a boy who checks himself into a psychiatric hospital only to find he’s not that bad off. Another would be City Island (2009), about a prison guard lying to his family about his acting aspirations, and his family lying about everything else; and Me and Orson Welles (2008), about a young man (Zac Efron) taken under the wing of the Hollywood underdog/legend. And now you can add another film, namely Another Earth, to that list. What is it about these movies that are really exciting? Well, mainly they’re made on a lower budget than most Hollywood films. In fact, most of them aren’t really Hollywood at all but rather the Hollywood studios’ independent features arm — namely a branch of the big

"Another Earth" was a big winner at Sundance. studios that acknowledges (but mainly doesn’t want to pay for the production of) great projects among the not-so-elite filmmakers’ club. Well, there’s a reason for my hesitating to tell you much about Another Earth. Frankly, the plot is so well constructed and executed that to

even share the premise might ruin it. I can tell you that the subplot of the film is cause for it sometimes being labelled a part of the science fiction genre — but don’t be tricked by that tag. Yes, there is that subplot of another earth identical to ours appearing in the sky. Some would argue that you could strip that subplot out and still have a great story. I disagree. In fact, that small facet of the story – beautifully pictured as another earth that hangs in the sky like a great, big, blue full moon – is both integral to the plot and a minor character simultaneously. Does that make sense? Does it need to? This film was a big winner at Sundance this year, taking two feature film prizes. The film was co-written and stars Brit Marling, a relatively unknown, completely talented actress/writer. I had the pleasure of attending a sneak preview in Philadelphia where Ms Marling was a guest along with director/co-writer Mike Cahill. Mike said he would consider bringing the film to Cape May (you bet I asked him!), so fingers crossed. This is a film about regrets and redemption — it’s beautifully told, brilliantly acted and remarkably filmed.
