The Police Blotter
CUSTER, South Dakota – There were reports of suspicious people doing “something funny with flashlights” on North 5th Street. A deputy officer checked and found the people were “not suspicious, merely Canadian.” The outof-towners were enjoying an evening stroll.
Classic Quotations
A Story From The Past “Canada sets aside 36 percent of their visas for people with skills they think their country needs. We set aside six percent. We educate the doctors, and then don’t give them a green card.” Michael Bloomberg “A lot of funny stuff happens in Canada.” Samantha Bee “When I was crossing the border into Canada they asked if I had any firearms with me. I said, ‘Well, what do you need?’” Stephen Wright “Canada is the only country in the world that knows how to live without an identity.” Marshall MacLuhan “Canada is not the party. It’s the apartment above the party.” Craig Ferguson
IN JANUARY of 1918, another of the Cape May Real Estate’s most prominent holdings was taken over by the military. The War Department entered into a lease with Nelson Graves to lease the Hotel Cape May for use as a military hospital. The terms were for full use of the hotel and its grounds, at a cost of $99,000 a year. The War Department renamed it US Army General Hospital #11, and the 600-room hotel was promptly turned into a treatment and training facility. Ben Miller

Random Fact Of The Week
Although Nova Scotia was granted the British Empire’s first flag by King Charles in 1625, Canada didn’t have a national flag until February 15, 1965, when its maple leaf flag was adopted. Before that, the British Maritime red ensign flag was in use.
Fortune Cookie Of The Week J “Each bird likes its own nest best” J Once a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with a firecracker roll. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editors
T
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
HE EZ crew arrived en masse to an open house at the Ocean Club Hotel last week, with most of the action revolving around the SeaSalt restaurant. The Ocean Club is located on the eastern side of Beach Avenue, at the site of the old Atlas, and it’s an excellent addition to Cape May’s stock of user-friendly establishments. We couldn’t get a good measure of the food being served because the restaurant was absolutely jam-packed, which is what happens when you offer free food and drink, but we were impressed by the décor, the ambience, and particularly by the fact that the owners actually got the place open before the summer ended, given that it looked like a building site a few weeks ago. Because the hotel parking lot was full (those damn freeloaders…), EZ editor Jack Wright had to take his chances at one of the beachside parking meters, and was having trouble locating some prized quarters until the welcome intervention of Duck Menz, Jay Schatz and Mayor Ed Mahaney, who emptied their pockets in very generous fashion. (Especially generous when you consider that Messrs Schatz and Mahaney have previously come under fire in this column.) WE are very happy to report good news about a guest at a local B&B who was penalized by Cape May’s over-zealous anti-parking authorities. The visitor had his car towed at the end of April, through no fault of his own, but after some pressure from the B&B owner (and this publication), he is finally receiving a refund of the towing fee. This is NOT the same person whose car was towed from Windsor Avenue a few weeks ago, also through no fault of his own.

the old Copperfish location on Route 109 as you come into town, officially changes their name and menu to reflect the new Italian/ Mexican fusion cuisine they will be offering for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Stop by the new Cinco de Mayo on Friday and receive 10% off all day to celebrate their grand opening (or is that gran apertura?). We’re told there will be breakfast burritos, sizzling fajitas, and all sorts of other goodies. Something special turned up on the doorstep of the Exit Zero Store, Gallery and Global HQ on Tuesday of this week. It’s something you’re going to want to get your mittens on if you’re a fan of all things Cape May. We are talking about the new color issue, which is always one of the highlights of our life. As usual, it features a magnificent painting by Victor Grasso on the cover, and some great stories and photographs inside. Copies are only $4.95 and believe, they won’t hang around for long, so drop into our lovely store on Sunset Boulevard and pick up a copy, along with some beautiful merchandise. speaking of the great Victor Grasso, which we were, you don’t want to miss his annual show at SOMA NewArt Gallery, on Saturday, August 6. It will feature all five color issue covers he is doing this year, as well as a bunch of other works which are just… brilliant. We’re thinking that this will be Victor’s most successful show yet. Come see his work, meet the man himself, drink complimentary wine and enjoy great snacks, all courtesy of 410 Bank Street, at SOMA from 6-9pm inside Carpenter’s Square Mall. See you there – we wouldn’t miss this one for anything. PS: For those who can’t splurge on original art, there will be prints available of some of Victor’s works.

We are still lobbying the city on his behalf. We also heard some good news from Jim Buechler, who got a parking ticket while he and his wife Janet were having dinner at the Pilot House this summer. An officer put a ticket on their windshield at 8:03pm, even though their meter was paid until 8.21pm. “It may be nice if a condition of employment would be that the summer officers were able to tell time,” said Jim, who successfully appealed. Let us know if you feel you’ve been unfairly treated by the authorities, especially when it comes to parking. Proper policing is one thing, but the zealous targeting of visitors always leaves a sour taste in our mouths. Hopefully, all this persistent nagging from us will prevent some of the city’s more wrongheaded decisions when it comes to dealing with visitors to America’s Original Seaside Resort. We will keep you posted. If Italian food is good and Mexican food is good, then Italian/Mexican fusion must be great, right? Right! But don’t take our word for it – find out for yourself this Friday, July 29, when Diana’s, at

Every week our photographer Danielle O’Neal roams the streets of Cape May on a mission... to give away a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. But it’s not quite THAT easy – first, the lucky recipient has to answer three questions related to our issue theme, which this week is all about Canada. This week’s winner is Thera Vergas, 35, a corrections officer from Millville, New Jersey. We found Thera strolling the Washington Street Mall. Here are her answers to our piercing questions: Do you like Canadian bacon? Yes, I love it. What’s the capital of Canada? Montreal. [Editor’s Note: In fact, it’s Ottawa.] What kind of drink is Canada Dry? Ginger ale. Thera wins a $50 gift certificate to the Original Fudge Kitchen for answering our questions. Congratulations and enjoy! PHOTOGRAPH BY Danielle o’neal

Cape May Cooks
A culinary column by Knickerbocker and the Southern Belle
O
f all the delights in the summer produce parade, none ranks higher, in our opinion, than the delectable South Jersey peach. A bit of geographic and historical background: the peach’s botanical name is Prunus persica, since the Europeans who brought them to Europe thought they were native to Persia. They were wrong – peaches are native to China. Spanish explorers brought them to the Americas in the 16th century, and Native Americans spread them through the US. Peaches were not commercially planted until the 19th century. And here we need to correct a common misperception: Georgia is under the delusion that it is the “Peach State,” when actually 65% of commercial peach production in the US comes from California. South Carolina, Georgia’s more modest neighbor, is number two in production. New Jersey doesn’t rank among the top peach states, but that hardly matters to us as long as we see those juicy beauties in our markets. So that you can enjoy them as often as possible, this week’s column includes recipes from breakfast through cocktail hour, on into dessert. Carpe peachem! Jersey Peach Bread 30 minutes preparation, one hour to bake makes 2 loaves 3 c sliced and peeled fresh peaches 6 tbsp sugar 2 c all-purpose flour 1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp baking soda ¼ tsp salt 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 ½ c sugar ½ butter or margarine 2 eggs
1 c pecans, finely chopped 1 tsp vanilla extract Place peaches and sugar in an electric blender or food processor. Process until puréed (mixture should yield about 2 ¼ cups). In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and cinnamon; set aside. In a large bowl combine sugar and butter/margarine; cream well. Add the eggs, mix well. Add peach purée and dry ingredients; mix until ingredients are moistened. Stir in the nuts and vanilla. Spoon batter into two wellgreased and floured 9x5x3-inch loaf pans. Bake at 325 degrees for 55-60 minutes, or until loaf tests done. Cool 10 minutes in pan, then turn out onto rack and let cool completely.

The Bellini cocktail was invented in the 1930s at Harry’s Bar, a favorite haunt of Ernest Hemingway in Venice, Italy. It was named after the 15thcentury artist Giovanni Bellini who used a shade similar to the drink in coloring a saint’s toga. Harry Cipriani, the owner of the bar, liked the painting and named the drink “Bellini” in the artist’s honor. Our Cape May version uses local Jersey peaches instead of the white peach pureé in the original cocktail. Make it with sparkling water instead of Champagne for a ‘mocktail.’ 3 ripe Jersey peaches, peeled 1 bottle Prosecco or Champagne, or sparkling water

Purée the peaches in a food processor or blender. Place a tablespoon of peach purée in each flute. Fill with Prosecco, Champagne or sparkling water. Stir gently. Fresh Peach Salsa 20 minutes makes about 4 cups 1 large sweet onion, chopped 1 jalapeño pepper, seeded and chopped fine ¼ c sugar 2 tbsp grated ginger 2 tbsp olive oil 6 large peaches or nectarines, peeled and chopped ¼ c fresh lemon juice ¼ tsp salt 2 tbsp chopped cilantro In a large skillet, sauté the first 4 ingredients in hot oil over medium heat 5 minutes, or til onion is tender. Stir in peaches and remaining ingredients; cook, stirring gently, for 5 minutes. Serve the salsa warm, or at room temperature; chill in the refrigerator up to two days. Peach Enchiladas 1 hour makes 8 enchiladas This recipe sounds strange (see lemon-lime soda), but we swear, it’s delicious! 1 (8 oz.) can refrigerated crescent rolls 2 large, fresh and firm ripe peaches, peeled and cut into quarters ½ c sugar ½ c butter, melted ½ tsp ground cinnamon 6 oz. lemon-lime soda Unroll crescents and separate into triangles. Put one peach quarter on the wide end of each triangle; roll triangles around peaches, starting at wide end. Place triangles, point side down in a greased 8x8 pan. Stir together the sugar, butter and cinnamon. Drizzle over rolls. Gently pour soft drink over rolls. Bake at 350 degrees for 45-50 minutes, or until bubbly and golden brown.

Have you ever wanted that extralaid-back vibe, that “I’m not slow, just thinking” style that all Canadians seem to carry off so effortlessly? Well, we have imported genuine ex-lumberjack shirts, off the backs of burly Canadian axe-men, cleaned them without taking away the special scent, and are selling them on with the guarantee that the spirit of the wearer will infuse you, too. In 9 out of 10 tests, wearers got burlier, more attractive and at the very same time more straight and impossibly gay.

The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone
ecently, I read that the average employed American works a 46-hour work week. That’s a lot of time on the clock. No wonder a great deal of our conversations, even the ones had while sipping on a post-shift cocktail at The Rusty Nail, center around work. We can’t leave the office behind. Sometimes, it’s okay. What happens at work often makes for great story-telling. A med student friend told me some of his experiences volunteering at an inner-city STD clinic. Apparently, when some of the clinic’s regulars are asked if they’re sexually active, they respond with: “Nah, I just sort of lie there.” Other times, not being able to let go is problematic – this same doctor knows all of the traumas he’s witnessed in the ER can’t affect his emotional state once he takes off the white coat. Talking with this guy about the importance of leaving work at work got me thinking. While delivering lobster isn’t nearly as urgent a task as saving a life, I still find myself dwelling on the dining room long
after I’ve taken off the apron. A few months ago, a customer asked for my opinion on “that waitressing column” in Exit Zero. He told me that the author should “tone it down,” and to this day, when I sit down to write, I wonder if I’m toned down enough. And when one of my regular customers commented on my new haircut (“Don’t worry; it will grow out.”), I spent the entire next day wondering if my hair makes me look like a mushroom. Years ago, I waited on one of my favorite couples. They’d been their usual loveydovey selves at the beginning of their meal, but by the end, they were breaking up. In between coffee and crème brulee, there
were f lailing arms, four-letter words, and tears – lots and lots of tears. To this day, I find myself wondering if they were able to work it out. The truth is, I remember every really negative thing that’s happened in the dining room, and every positive thing, too. Sometimes, I get preoccupied thinking about them long after I’ve clocked out. I wonder about the woman I served crab cakes to at the reception following her husband’s funeral. I wonder about the girl I caught sneaking sips of wine at her sweet sixteen dinner. I dwell on all of it. I’m sensitive, maybe even too sensitive for a job in the customer service industry. But even though I sometimes find myself wishing I could leave work at work, I don’t mind all that much. The truth is, I wouldn’t want to be desensitized to all of the bad stuff, if it meant being desensitized to all of the life moments – some big, some small – happening all around me. I’m not saving lives at work, true, but I am witnessing them, and maybe that’s something worth dwelling on, after all.

Canadian Must Haves
The finest things from the shops of this charmed city... by Kate Chadwick
Canadian Drinks From Montreal Liquor
Canadian Cheese From Seaside Cheese
Bacon Candy From Just For Laughs
If you are thirsting for a Canadian beverage, where do you go? Why, to the Montreal Liquor Store at the Montreal Inn, of course! Pick up a six-pack of Labatt Blue beer, from Canada’s largest brewery, for $7.50. Or get a pint of Windsor Canadian or Canadian Club whiskey for $7.50 and $8.75, respectively. 1025 Beach Avenue, 609-884-6114, www. montreal-inn.com.
You know what goes great with Canadian beer? Canadian cheese. This Old Quebec Extra Sharp Cheddar is aged for three years and it is delightfully yummy (we tasted it for you – you’re welcome). The price fluctuates with the market, but it’s around $15 a pound and worth every penny. 600 Park Boulevard, #5, 609-884-8700, www.seasidecheesecapemay.com.
Okay, so it’s not Canadian bacon, but it’s bacon nonetheless. And if you’re looking to avoid the calories and cholesterol count of the real deal, try these bacon-flavored treats instead. Bacon Beans, a.k.a. baconflavored jelly beans, or Gummy Bacon, are each $6.95. (And put on your ‘I HEART Bacon’ T-shirt while you eat for $16.95.) 504 Washington Street, 609-884-5466.
Breath Spray From Just For Laughs
Maple Chipotle Sauce From Love The Cook
Maple Fudge From Morrow’s Nut House
Yes, boys and girls – it’s magic, life-transforming breath spray from our friends at Just For Laughs, and it’s guaranteed to make you look and feel Canadian instantly. So do as the package directs, and succumb to the fantasy (or at least succumb to fresh peppermint breath, anyway). $6.95 504 Washington Street, 609-884-5466.
Add a little north-of-the-border maple goodness to your pantry and your next grilling event with this Maple Chipotle Grille Sauce by Stonewall Kitchen from Love The Cook. It strikes the perfect balance between salty and sweet, and let’s face it – everything’s better with a little maple. $6.99. 404 Washington Street, 609-884-9292, www.lovethecook.com.
Um, it’s fudge – do we really need to talk you into this? Smooth and creamy and maple-y, with the perfect crunch of nuts – it’s not just for breakfast anymore. Kidding! Obviously it’s also the perfect dessert, snack, souvenir to take or send to the folks at home, hostess gift, stuff to keep on hand in case you get dumped, etc. $9 a pound. 321 Washington Street, 609-884-3300.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady So I broke up with my boyfriend six months ago. We were together for three years and loved each other a lot, but he wouldn’t commit. Imagine my surprise when I ran into him during happy hour at Harborview (our old hangout, by the way) with his FIANCÉE! I mean, I knew he had moved on, as have I, but really? And how do I get over feeling stupid for having wasted three years of my life on a liar? – Floored Dear Floored Oh, dear. Well, he technically isn’t a liar – he wanted to commit, just not to you. Wait, the Answer Lady is not helping, is she? There is no worse feeling than having wasted one’s time, and the Answer Lady spent half her life drunk, so she knows this all too well. Try not to look at it as wasted time, dear, as difficult as that may be. Surely you have many
Wise answers to perplexing questions
treasured memories and life lessons learned from the time you spent with your ex. Every person we encounter, good and bad, friend or foe, cool colleague and heinous neighbor, helps to shape the fabric of who we are. As for whether/when to marry, sometimes it’s simply a matter of meeting the right person at the wrong time, or vice versa. Surely the stars will align for you someday, just as they have for him. You loved this man once, so let go of your bitterness, wish him well, and let it go. (And who knows? Maybe she’ll leave him
at the altar. It could happen.) Dear Answer Lady My husband has been not-so-subtly hinting that I should get a boob job. We have only been married a couple of years, have no children and I am 30 years old. I really don’t know what to make of this – what do you think? – Small But Happy Dear Happy Sometimes it is so tempting for the Answer Lady to leap onto her feminist soapbox and lament the superficiality of men and their obsession with their idea of perfection in the female form. She is also wise enough to know, however, that if she had a bigger rack she would very likely be running the universe right now. If you are asking the Answer Lady whether you should go under the knife to make someone else happy, the response is an emphatic “no.” This is a personal decision, as it’s your body, although you do share it with him, presumably. However, he could get hit by a bus tomorrow and then it’s just you and your store-bought boobs. This is your call to make, and yours alone.

The Inside Scoop On City Hall
Y
A user’s guide to Cape May City council meetings... by Kate Chadwick and Jon Roth
es, dear readers – it’s that time again. Our intrepid reporters detail all the goings-on in the circus we call city council meetings, and once again this outing did not disappoint. We expected a dull, dry and hopefully brief meeting, but nay – it was packed with drama, pathos, and very nearly degenerated into fisticuffs. Meeting of Cape May City Council, Tuesday, July 19, 2011. 7:00–7:10 – We presume the usual roll call and Pledge of Allegiance took place – due to a horse and carriage-related traffic snarl en route to the meeting, we missed the opening segment. The council minutes do include a proclamation regarding National Night Out on Tuesday, August 2, so if you’ve got youngsters, make sure to be there (and read about it in the events section on page 9). 7:11 – City Clerk Diane Weldon, wearing a fetching flowered dress and white jacket, reads the minutes and reports. 7:14 – Mayor Ed Mahaney asks if
there is any new business of City Attorney Anthony Monzo (nattily attired in a gray suit and a blue silk tie), who replies in the negative. He then asks City Manager Bruce MacLeod, sporting a white dress shirt and tie, who has a few items. The Movies on the Beach the previous week was a big success, with more than 600 folks in attendance (who laudably lined their chairs up in rows without adult supervision). There were also about 600 people in attendance at the same time at the Rotary Park concert. The annual volleyball tournament (hosted by Cabanas)
was a great success, with 55 teams competing. 7:15 – Clerk Weldon, Councilmember Terri Swain and Deputy Mayor Jack Wichterman have no new business. Councilman Bill Murray announces the receipt of a petition with more than 200 signatures requesting that council reconsider the removal of Officer Tony Genaro from the DARE program. His removal was a result of those nefarious budget constraints. 7:17 – Councilmember Deanna Murray makes a formal request that Manager MacLeod meet with Police Chief Diane Sorantino to further discuss the issue. MacLeod agrees. 7:18 – Councilmember Fiocca, attired in gauzy white patterned blouse, mentions a letter from Bob Steenrod proposing the formation of a committee to review applications for Marketing Director of the new Convention Hall. Deputy Mayor Wichterman remarks

Page 76 The Inside Scoop On City Hall ? From Page 75 that more than 100 resumes have been received, and that “it’s a shame we didn’t do this earlier, since we’ll have trouble filling this building in 2012 anyhow.” He’s not adverse to forming a committee, as he believes there are plenty of people who are “a lot smarter about tourism than I am.” He then (somewhat inexplicably) veers back to the topic of Officer Tony, remarking that he makes $83,000 per year, and that “we can’t go back and change the budget,” but that he would welcome Officer Tony to return to the DARE position on a volunteer basis. (“You’re fired. But feel free to keep working as a volunteer!” We desperately hope this line of thinking does not catch on with employers in general.) 7:20 – Councilmember Murray rejoins that he does NOT want to change the budget, he simply wants the matter to be further discussed by Mr MacLeod with Chief Sorantino. He agrees with Mr Wichterman regarding the Steenrod proposal. 7:21 – Mr MacLeod responds that he has had a continuing dialogue with Chief Sorantino and that Genaro has been an outstanding officer and that the DARE pro-
Thursday, July 28, 2011 gram will continue. He adds that Officer Genaro is the third or fourth officer to take the DARE position.
7:27 – Attorney Monzo asks to see Mr Steenrod’s proposal, as he is unaware of its contents. 7:29 – Mayor Mahaney weighs in, saying that he is against Steenrod’s proposal for several reasons. First, to turn over the selection process “to a group with no chemistry” would likely result in the loss of two months. Second, the council itself was elected for the purpose of making decisions. He prefaces his next rationale by saying, “I’m going to be blunt here, as I usually am,” and remarks that most of the groups who co-signed Mr Steenrod’s proposal “didn’t actively support of the building of a new Convention Hall.”
He then discusses the Mid-Atlantic Junior Lifeguard Championships and the upcoming tournament scheduled for August 4-6, which should bring around 1,500 lifeguards to town (perhaps the Nail should take on extra bartenders for this). 7:38 – Councilmember Murray remarks that he hasn’t seen any of the resumes for the marketing position, and that if council is supposed to select the successful candidate for the position, he would like to see them. Apparently, Mr Mahaney, Mr Wichterman and Mr MacLeod are the only ones who have seen the resumes. Mr MacLeod will make copies available, and mentions that the job listing (which had a July 15 deadline, sorry folks) was posted in the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Philadelphia Daily News, the Atlantic City Press, the City of Cape May website and monster.com 7:40 – The public portion opens with Mike Pender of 135 Emerald Avenue in West Cape May. He approaches the podium in a white button-down and khakis and discusses the petition to keep Officer Tony in the DARE position. He remarks that Officer Genaro’s duties as a community officer, juvenile officer and DARE officer only

Page 78 The Inside Scoop On City Hall ? From Page 76 fall during the winter months (December through April) which, we hope you know, is not exactly the busy season here in town. A former social worker and current lawyer, he remarks that “in most towns, kids run away from police. Here, they run TO him.” 7:45 – Bob Steenrod, wearing a blue short-sleeved button down shirt, approaches the podium to discuss why he wrote the “infamous proposal letter,” which asks that a small committee of tourismsavvy folk assist council with the selection of the marketing candidate. Steenrod, who was a president of the Chamber of Commerce and has served on the Tourism Commission since its inception, takes exception to Mayor Mahaney’s assertion that the organizations co-signing his proposal didn’t support the new convention hall. 7:46 – Mayor Mahaney begins to unceremoniously interrupt him and Steenrod intercepts by saying “I’ll finish, then you can answer,” after which Mayor Mahaney interrupts again, retorting, “I’ll answer when you stop.” Perhaps Mahaney hasn’t learned the fine distinctions between finishing, stopping, and pausing to breathe.
Thursday, July 28, 2011 Mayor Mahaney clarifies that he didn’t say ALL of these organizations didn’t support the convention center, he said most, and he stands behind it. He then says that he did not receive Mr Steenrod’s emailed letter directly, but instead it was forwarded to him by Mr MacLeod. “You didn’t give me the letter,” the mayor says, “you pretended to email me and deliberately misspelled my name.” Quite an accusation. The room is breathless as things get rather testy, and we are grateful we are not seated between these two at a dinner party.
7:47 – Steenrod responds that he did not do any such thing. He goes on to say that a committee composed of local citizens well-versed in the marketing of Cape May would be very valuable in assisting
council members in selecting the appropriate candidate for the job. Steenrod further expounds that someone like himself, who has served in many marketing and tourism capacities for Cape May, securing grants and the like, as well as teaching courses on the subjects at the college level, would be a valuable aid in securing the right candidate. He understands that it is ultimately council’s decision, but says the Convention Hall Marketing Director is “the most important position in Cape May, with tourism going downhill as it is.” 7:49 – In a show of diplomatic reserve, the mayor asks Steenrod if the tourism commission has secured any grants this year. The commission has not. (Is this really the venue for such petulance and sniping?) Steenrod responds that this is due in large part to the economy, it’s happening all over the country, and that the city does not support tourism like it should. He says that the city collects a million dollars a year in room taxes, none of which go toward tourism, and that the members of the various tourism committees are supporting tourism with their own money through the payment of dues, etc. Mahaney, probably sensing he

From Page 78 is losing this argument, has the last word by saying that council has taken the lead in addressing this issue by posting the marketing position. Ahem. 7:51 – The Maslows approach the podium and discuss how Officer Tony assisted their family when their young daughter was being harassed. The wife also mentions that Officer Tony was hired as a DJ for the kids’ dance, and that she was on the PTA at the time. When she went to write the check for his work at the dance, he asked her to make it out to the DARE program. Her conclusion? “You can’t write a paycheck big enough” for Officer Genaro’s services. 7:55 – John Fleming, in white polo and khakis, thanks the city for additional landscaping in the Schellenger’s Landing area and remarks that the area is receiving more pedestrian and bike traffic than ever before. He then asks Attorney Monzo about the decision regarding the Beach Theatre, as he’s seen no announcement in the papers. Monzo replies that the judge ruled in favor of the city on all counts. This information was published in the Cape May Star and Wave. Ahem. 7:57 – Bernie Haas, in blue and white pinstripe shirt and khakis, no socks, approaches the podium and asks Monzo if the Beach Theatre Foundation can start making arrangements to repay some of the money pledged by its members; he is told ‘yes.’ He then asks for clarification on the Officer Genaro issue; Deputy Mayor Wichterman says that due to budget constraints, council was faced with the decision to either remove Officer Tony from the DARE program and return him to full-time patrol, or hire another officer to the tune of about $50,000; they chose the former. Haas astutely reminds the council that, “like you guys,
I don’t have kids in the system,” but that from what he has gathered tonight, the work Officer Tony has been doing seems priceless. Haas then asks City Manager MacLeod about the historic landmark banners, which we were told back in April were delayed from being displayed until the arrival of a truck. “Remember the lift truck for the banners,” Haas asks, “When’s that –” “September,” Manager MacLeod responds curtly. Just in time, right?
8:10 – Mary Hoff, a resident of Lafayette Street, approaches the podium with a gentleman (later identified as Mike from Corgie Street) to discuss speeding on Lafayette. She says that she spoke about this issue a couple of years ago, at which time a speed-gauging machine was set up, which she appreciates. However she would be happier if perhaps a crosswalk was installed, as it is treacherous crossing the street to access the basketball court, ball field, etc. Mike from Corgie adds that he thinks council should take it a step further by lowering the speed limit from 25 to 20mph around town, as well as installing four-way stop signs at intersections with low visibility, i.e. Jefferson and Columbia. He also (rather alarmingly) notifies the council that he “went by each of your houses” in an attempt to verify that intersections with poor visibility are all over the place. He concludes that unless changes are made, “Someone’s going to get killed.” 8:15 – Chad deSatnick, in a white polo with a pocket and

The Inside Scoop On City Hall ? From Page 80 wraparound shades pushed back over his forehead, comes to the podium and distributes print-outs to council members. He says that he has acquired these through OPRA (the Open Public Records Act, not the Queen of all Media). The first page outlines the city’s distribution of the brochures printed to warn beach-goers of the dangers of head and neck injuries, the second lists fire department statistics on injuries thus far this year, and the third lists beach patrol reports of injuries. “I want to point out how professional the last two pages are,” DeSatnick says tellingly. He remarks that the brochures should be given every time a beach tag is purchased, and questions whether beach taggers are city employees. The mayor responds that City Manager MacLeod will respond. MacLeod responds yes. DeSatnick explains that the brochures are not there as a scare tactic – “they provide information on rip currents, where to launch kayaks and who to contact during emergencies.” He states that as of today, we are ahead on C-spine injuries in relation to last year, and that brochures should be
distributed with every beach tag. There is silence for a beat, then he says to council: “No response?” The mayor responds “Mr MacLeod will...” Chad interjects “I’m talking to you, Mayor.” To which Mayor Mahaney says, “My response is to let Mr MacLeod respond.” 8:20 – City Manager MacLeod agrees that the brochures are important, but stresses that they are made available at other locations as well, like hotel lobbies [no word on why a wider circulation prevents taggers from passing out brochures]. “We could always do a better job,” he says. He goes on about how the city has worked with deSatnick on this issue over
the years, incurring the expense of printing the brochures, and then, rather unbelievably, says to deSatnick, “I know each year you notice these accidents happen, then eventually come to the podium and do what we’re doing now.” We might rephrase it along the lines of: Each year the city fails to adequately warn visitors about beach safety, so each year Chad has to remind them of their job. 8:20 – Thankfully, councilmember Murray cuts to the chase here and asks directly of City Manager MacLeod whether the beach taggers can give out brochures. MacLeod says, “I mean, yes, I can say that.” Wasn’t that the existing agreement? 8:25 – Dennis deSatnick comes to the podium in a lime green shirt and enjoins the council not to “wait too long” to successfully distribute the safety brochures. Regarding traffic in town, he recommends the council put police at crosswalks to carefully police drivers. The revenue from these tickets could pay for Officer Genaro’s reinstitution as juvenile officer. 8: 28 – The meeting is adjourned and we hightail it out of the building, wondering why so many people had difficulty being civil. Sure, it’s been hot out lately, but you can’t blame everything on the weather.

ow far should a man go for a woman? No, not like voluntarily giving up a Sunday afternoon to look at window treatments, or spending the holidays with her mother in a house full of cats. Geographically, in actual road miles, how far should a guy travel for the love of a woman? On the Washington Street Mall, you don’t have to go far for Italian food, with several options in a three-block radius, so it was a short trip to meet Charlene at Cucina Rosa. This BYOB establishment serves a variety of traditional Italian fare with a smattering of American cuisine. I began with a tasty crab bisque, and then enjoyed the chicken portofino. This chicken breast stuffed with mushrooms, onions, peppers, and cheese combines several of my favorite flavors in one place. Charlene ordered the blackened tuna, and the forkful she let me try was one of the best pieces of fish I’ve ever had. Unfortunately for me – and really, for Cape May in general – Charlene is a
visitor, not a resident. She comes up from Maryland, rents a house for a few weeks, and then reluctantly leaves. She is absolutely vibrant, with a big smile, an easy wit, great fashion sense, and an inner confidence that makes you want to talk with her for hours. And it’s hard not to notice her passion for shoes, given how long I spent looking at her fabulous legs. She really wants to move here eventually, or at least become a long-term renter, if only she could find the right place.
So, the only thing undesirable about Charlene is her current geographical location. The question is, then, am I willing to attempt a relationship with a woman who lives a couple hours away? I’ve done it before, but never with any lasting success. What ultimately sours the deal is the lack of equality. I’m always the one doing the driving, spending hours on the road and dollars at the gas pump, while she’s unwilling to do the same. Charlene will be back to Cape May in September, and I’m looking forward to seeing her then. But in the meantime? I’d head for the Delaware Memorial Bridge in a heartbeat if I thought she’d return the favor the following weekend, but alas, I don’t see it happening. She’s very attractive, but geographically undesirable. Should I put some rubber on the road to meet you? Send an email to info@ exitzero.us, I’ll be in touch, and we’ll go to dinner at one of the Cape’s fine restaurants. Afterwards I’ll write all about it, a combined date and restaurant review. Your name will be changed, the restaurant’s won’t. I’d like to see if you’re worth the drive.

Victor Grasso: New Paintings And Drawings
S
Our favorite local artist’s new exhibit opens soon at SOMA NewArt Gallery
OMA NewArt Gallery is delighted to announce an August exhibition, “New Paintings and Drawings”, by Cape May artist and one of our favorite people here at Exit Zero, Victor Grasso. An opening Artist’s Reception will be held Saturday Evening, August 6, from 6pm–9pm, and the exhibition runs through September 5. Victor Grasso’s signature photorealistic style is fully showcased in his new exhibit. Inspired by Norman Rockwell and other American illustrators, Grasso finds his inspiration in the life and people of the South Jersey coast, where he lives and works. Embracing his roots, Grasso creates deft vignettes, each painting an expression of his keen observation of the human character. “Artists I admire always inspire me,” Victor comments. “Last September, I saw George Lucas and Stephen Spielberg’s private collection of Norman Rockwell paintings and drawings at the Smithsonian Museum of Art. I had always loved Rockwell, but never had an opportunity to study such a large collection in person. I was blown away
Victor Grasso’s “The Picaroon,” one of several pieces which will show at SOMA NewArt Gallery. by the technical proficiency, the boldness of his brush strokes, a sheer visceral technique — it all just mesmerized me. I knew I could paint with the technical proficiency I needed, but the real challenge was to make my own story. Inspired by living in a town rich with local characters, history and quirk, I let a little bit of my lighter side in and went
to work, and the result is pure Cape May, written, directed, and painted, by yours truly.” Grasso is carving out a meteoric career. He has always admired the European masters and has developed an astounding mastery of classical painting technique. His unique creative energy, outstanding technical skill and innovative ideas come together in this exhibit of oil paintings, pencil and charcoal drawings and watercolors. Grasso’s new works are whimsical and tempered with sly humor and satire. “I’ve used many local models to tell my stories,” he says. From a surfer getting beach-tagged, to a self-portrait depicting a pirate finding Captain’s Kidd’s treasure, each painting reflects a situation relevant to Cape May. In fact, you’ll see several of his recent pieces on the cover of Exit Zero color issues. Stop by SOMA on the evening of Saturday, August 6. Meet the artist and enjoy an evening of art, music, conversation and refreshments. SOMA NewArt Gallery is located 31 Perry Street. The Gallery is open daily 10am to 10pm. For details call 898-7488.

The Old Fogey
S
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
ay this aloud: “Canadian.” And then again, adding “I am a…” at the beginning. How does it make you feel? Proud? Ashamed? Slightly tingly? I’ll wager it made you feel less unclean than if you had just said “I am a Wildwooder,” though, so don’t you go judging. I ask because I was responsible for finding and naming Canada, and so feel some regret. Not that I don’t think that country is not a fine one – it is magnificent, wild, safe, prosperous and still does not have a majority of French people living there (now, what was my very funny joke about the difference between the French and toast, again… damn, I always forget the punchline..) but yet somehow, to say “I am Canadian” is met with at best politeness and all too often with tittering behind the hand. And I fear that I gave the country too NICE a name. Of course I blame those wretched Scotchmen, a dozen of whom were with me when I discovered Canada. We were a slightly military expedition, in that we carried enough beads and trinkets to purchase
any amount of land from it’s rightful, erm, original inhabitants, and enough muskets to encourage those natives to accept the deal before the terms changed and they would no longer be offered as favourable an exchange rate as 100,000 acres for a tiny tin hatchet and a pocket mirror. So we had just arrived in what was to be Canada, after mistakenly taking a left after El Dorado (yes, it was THAT El Dorado, the lost fabled city of gold. We buried it before we left, so those infernal wandering
Spaniard would not find and steal it, but then the Young Albert of the time ate the map and it remains lost forever – which is rather unfortunate, given my rough calculation that it consisted of approximately 30 million tons of gold). Anyway, we stumbled upon a mountainous paradise, with rivers full of leaping salmon, the air so thick with game birds that a single shot into the sky brought down enough to feast on for a year, and we decided to go ahead and keep it. My Scotch guide, sensing that he might be in for a share of this vast land, was overly solicitous, as are all that grasping race when they sense profit, and every time I went to do something, would shout “Can ah dae that fur ye?” which roughly translates to an offer of assistance. So often did I hear that guttural phrase that when it came to naming the country, it was all I had in my head, and “Can Ah Dae” became in time Canada. And I think that helpful tone has damned the nation’s reputation. If only I had made it a more negative “Cannae Dae,” they would be better regarded today.

Activity Of The Week
T
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Victorian Home Tour
eenage girls who come to Cape May can fall in love with Victorian life. Drawn to the idea of stylized flirting, with specific rules about bouquets and fans, they imagine themselves dancing with well-mannered gentlemen in ballrooms by the sea. They ignore the fact that marrying involved the complete forfeiture of property rights; that woolen bathing costumes were heavy and itchy; that the average Victorian woman expended 4,000 calories per day just to accomplish the chores of daily living. They fantasize about being born in the Victorian Era without considering that unless they were born rich, by age 15 they would have been three years into a career as a “daily girl” or charwoman. All they see is the lace. Our friend Amy is such a girl, and we indulged her taste for lace with tours of Victorian homes. Cape May’s Victorian homes proudly display their gorgeous exteriors, and the interiors can be equally lovely. You can see the interior of the Angel of the Sea B&B in one of their free daily house tours. The Angel of the Sea began as a single structure; a summer
cottage built in the 1850s for Philadelphia chemist William Weightman, Sr. Its original location, at the corner of Franklin and Washington Street, lacked an ocean view, so Weightman ordered the house moved to the corner of Ocean and Beach. When the workers cut the house in two to move it, they found it impossible to reconnect, so
the Weightmans returned in the summer to find two houses. The Weightman Cottages stood until the Nor’easter of 1962 damaged them. They were moved to Trenton Avenue, where they eventually fell into disrepair. In 1989, John and Barbara Girton renovated the homes and opened them as the Angel of the Sea. You can see the results of their labor in a tour of the common areas and first floor guest rooms, if unoccupied. Amy loved Angel of the Sea, but wanted to see more, and the Emlen Physick Estate Tour allows you to see 15 restored rooms. Take a 45-minute guided tour of this Frank Furness-designed home at 1048 Washington Street. Try to schedule your tour so that you finish with lunch at the Carriage House Tearoom & Café on the grounds. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under. For a view of a Victorian garden, take the Queen Victoria Gardens Tour. Tickets, $7, are available at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth, and include a book with descriptions of the plants. Indulge your taste for lace with a house tour! Next week: Visit a Farmer’s Market

Bono is a one-year-old Chow mix who has a great zest for life. He’s enthusiastic, loves to play, and would make an awesome companion for whomever adopts him. He will need some basic training but he’s more than willing to learn. We would suggest that he go to a home with older children becauce he has the potential to knock over smaller children. Come meet him today. You’ll be happy you did! Adoption fee is $95.
«
Calvin is a handsome two-yearold boy waiting patiently for a second chance. He’s got lots of energy, so an active home where he will receive lots of training would be best for him. Since he can be so enthusiastic we recommend a home without children as he could knock them over. Otherwise, he just needs someone to give him the love, support and confidence he needs to thrive. Adoption fee is $95.
«
Tara is affectionate and social but does also need to learn some manners as she can be jumpy at times. She enjoys her toys and rawhides but can be protective of them, so we suggest a home with children over the age of 13. As far as food goes she did very well and took it very gently from the handler. Overall she is a good gal who just needs some training. Stop by and meet her soon! Adoption fee is $95.

You’d be hard pressed to see him when he’s not purring... Stop on by the shelter, and get to know Domino – he’s worth the visit. Adoption fee is $35.

Marty, with his gray and white coat and distinctive little “kiss” of gray on the tip of his nose, just makes you want to smile and open your heart. He’s a bit on the quiet side, but we’re betting that once he settles in, he’ll be glad to sit in your lap. If a mature male is what you need, give Marty a chance! Adoption fee is $35.
Head to toe summer beauty....

Trish is a pretty gray tiger female cat. She’s only a year old, and her former guardian died and left her outside the house with no one to love her. She can be very playful, and she’s very agile as a “mouser.” She’s good with other cats and older kids, but not so great with dogs. Come and see if she’s right for you. Adoption fee is $35.

his Saturday will be the last performance of The Understudy and the biggest show of the season is getting ready to “load in” to the Robert Shackleton Playhouse. Cape May Stage is proud to produce Steel Magnolias with an amazing cast of Broadway veterans. A northern Louisiana beauty shop is being created on our stage complete with running water and dryers. Robert J. Martin who designed the extraordinary sets for I Hate Hamlet and Visiting Mr Green is returning to design this spectacular production. Costumes are inspired by the fashions of the 1980s and are designed by Michele Sinacore with great fun and gusto. Tony winner Karen Ziemba (Contact, 42nd Street, Steel Pier, Chicago on Broadway) will play M’Lynn, Emmy nominee Ellen Dolan (As The World Turns) will play Truvy, CLIO nominee Marlena Lustik (original Cuckoo’s Nest, Man In The Moon Marigolds, multiple Broadway shows) will play Ouiser, Cape May favorite Kate Hathaway (I Hate Hamlet and Star Songs, a sold-out cabaret last season) will play Clairee, Julliard graduate Nicole Lowrance (Dividing The Estate) will be playing Annelle, and Meredith Riley Stewart (Jeanne Ruddy Dance) will be playing Shelby. This is a cast unlike any ever assembled in the history of Cape May Stage. Prepare to be amazed. Steel Magnolias has a half-price preview on August 3 and the gala opening night is on Thursday, August 4 with a party at the Pier House located at La Mer Beachfront Inn. The Pier House has been a favorite opening night location with an extraordinary spread of Greekinspired food. The Understudy opening night

was at the Pier House and so many people raved about the food and their experience that we decided to do it again. This is an opening night you won’t want to miss. Tovah Feldshuh will be performing Aging Is Optional on August 8 as the finale to our Women of Broadway series. Cape May audiences will be the first to see this show before it moves to New York. Feldshuh is a legend on Broadway. Her performance in Golda’s Balcony holds the record for the longest-running, one-woman show on Broadway. She is a multiple Tony Award nominee. This is your last chance to sign up your camper for Summer Theatre Camp – Cape May Stage’s award-winning camp for students ages nine through 17 running August 8–20 at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse. Teaching artist Andrew Halliday, along with instructors Ryan Daily and Iraisa Ann Reilly, will step in for Don Toal, CMS Education Outreach Coordinator, who is preparing for his own nuptials with teaching artist Lisa Rigazio. Congratulations Don and Lisa! Click on the “Education” tab on our website at capemaystage.com to learn more about our summer camp or call 884-1341. Bird Droppings
I
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
took a walk this morning. So what else is new? I ran into a passel of birds. So what else is new? Yes, precisely my point. New. Very new. Just f ledged, actually. See, the birds I saw are this year's crop of songbirds: juveniles or first-year birds as they are called in the birding vernacular. July is prime time for f ledgling birds and this year is one for the record books. There are young birds EVERYWHERE! 'And there aren’t every year?' you ask? Absolutely not. The pendulum of the natural world swings to extremes. Some years breeding birds do well and get off lots of young. Some years the pendulum swings the other way, and few young are produced. Take Purple Martins. At Cape May Point State Park, over 200 young Purple Martins were banded this year. That’s a whole lot. But the colony at the park isn’t alone. Everywhere I go, Purple Martin boxes are crawling with birds. Many young Martins have already f ledged. They are
already cramming into the marshes north of the Maurice River bridge; have been since mid-July. It looks like the concentration of Martins is going to be one for the record books this year. A door buster of a cluster every evening as Purple Martins from all over South Jersey head for roost. Most years there are about 60,000. This year? Well, hard to say. With so many
Martins out and about early, the birds may build up early and leave early – maybe before mid-August. There will almost certainly be an echo assemblage, possibly as big as the first. This should peak in late August or early September. Me? I’m betting on 100,000+ Purple Martins. It’s going to be a spectacle. Bad news for dragonf lies and beetles. Back to my walk. Strolling down a favorite lane of mine, I simply could not believe how many young Marsh Wrens and Seaside Sparrows were f lying around. I even saw young Seaside Sparrows landing in woods. Barn Swallows are getting off second broods as I write. At the New Jersey Audubon Center for Research and Education there were four young swallows in the nest next to the door. They are sitting on the rim of the nest as I write. Tomorrow? I’ll bet they'll be gone. Gone to join the thousands of Tree and Barn Swallows that are already lording

It's a banner year for hummingbirds in town hobby. There will be a lot of good feedback. Ready to go out on a bird walk and experience some of the phenomena that is all around you? If you are in town on any given Monday, you can join Pete Dunne from the Cape May Bird Observatory on a field trip beginning at 7:30am that meets at The Nature Conservancy (South Cape May Meadows) parking lot on Sunset Boulevard. Or you can stop by the Cape May Bird Observatory and ask any of the staff or volunteers what walks are happening throughout the week. They’ll be glad to help you and you’ll see why the Cape May Bird Observatory is THE place

over the marshes of Cape May. And hummingbirds! I don’t think I have ever seen so many hummingbirds at our house. There are so many hummingbirds that they are actually polite to each other. That is to say they are not trying to beat the brains out of other hummingbirds trying to feed at the same feeder. Like humans in merging traffic, they seem to have gotten the idea that if everybody plays nice, everybody gets to feed. Okay, not everyone is playing nice. These are hummingbirds we’re talking about. So, why are young doing so well this year? We had a warm May, so there was a high survival rate among nestlings and lots and lots of insects this year. Young birds need protein and insects provide a great deal of it. Also, there have been very few big storms and no several-day periods marred by heavy rains. Storms destroy nests. Protracted rains make it hard for many birds to forage for food. If you are a bird watcher, expect great things. If you are not a bird watcher (yet) this would be a great year to take up the

The Dating Column
I
Stella Dixon's take on romance on Old Cape Island
used to babysit for a woman whose husband stole a motorcycle ten years into their marriage so that he might pay off a gambling debt she didn’t know he’d accrued. “Stella,” she’d say, “you can never really know the man you’re with.” She’s right; committing to a relationship, no matter how you slice it, is a crap shoot. My longest, most serious relationship was with the all-American boy next door. He was the captain of our college lacrosse team, he went to church with his mother, and he tossed the ball around with his father, the nuclear engineer at the head of this perfect, nuclear family. Two years into our relationship, he was convicted of rape. Crap shoot, exhibit B. But this goes both ways. If it’s true that, several years in, the good guy might turn out to hoodwink you, then it only follows that the bad guy might throw you for a loop as well. If it’s true that I can’t know someone even after years of dating, how can I begin to judge anyone on a first impression, or even a second… or a third? My dear friend is getting married to a wonderful guy, but he wasn’t always wonder-
ful. When they met, he was 40 pounds overweight and drunk all the time. He was fired from his job and constantly in trouble with the law for driving under the influence. My friend stuck it out, and now her fiancé is a catch – devoted, gentlemanly and totally sober. Had my friend not taken the risk, she would have missed out. There have been times that I’ve nearly written off wonderful men, too. I once went camping with a guy named Scotty. After too

many beers around the campfire, he passed out in our tent and ended up peeing there in the middle of the night. Had I written Scotty off after waking up in a puddle of urine, I never would have gotten to know him. Now, he’s one of my closest friends, and if he didn’t live 3,000 miles away, I know we’d be together. In fact, Scotty and I have a deal – if we’re not married by 40, we’re getting hitched. The only reason I’m thinking about all this now is because last week, my sister brought home a man who lives on the other side of the country, is still technically married, and has lots of baggage, including two small children. My parents are reeling, but I’m choosing not to judge. My sister is taking a gamble, sure. But I’ve learned that dating is always a gamble, even when you’ve been dealt a less complicated, more socially acceptable hand. As for me, I’m not folding yet. I know that when it comes to gambling, having lost in the past does not increase my chances of hitting the jackpot in the future; the odds are always the same. But when it comes to love, you don’t gamble because you plan on winning. You do it because you can’t be afraid to lose.

Tom Sims, Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews "Tabloid"
ome of you may have heard of Joyce McKinney – that is if you were reading trashy tabloids more than 30 years ago! Oh don’t be so snooty — you know you’ve sneaked a glance at “those terrible papers” while waiting in the supermarket checkout line. You looked a little longer than you should at headlines about minor mishaps of the stars or recent monumental screw-ups from has-beens. But how come you never see a headline about a monumental screw-up of a nobody from yesteryear? Enter Joyce McKinney, crowned Miss Wyoming back in... oh, who cares. She is the subject of a new IFC Films documentary called Tabloid, and she made her mark not as a beauty queen but by kidnapping the man of her dreams and evading authorities for years. As IFC Films puts it, Joyce's "labyrinthine crusade for love takes her through a surreal world of kidnapping, manacled Mormons, risqué photography, magic underwear and celestial sex – until her dream is finally realized in a cloning laboratory in Seoul, South Korea. Tabloid is a vivid portrayal of a phenomenally driven woman whose romantic obsessions and
Joyce McKinney, the subject of Errol Morris' "Tabloid" delusions catapult her over the edge." And boy does that about sum it up. You feel Joyce's enthusiasm today as she retells the story from 30 years ago of how she tried to save the man of her dreams from an apparent Mormon cult in the UK. Her eyes light

up as she recounts being caught by police, put in jail, and escaping while on bail back to the US. Director Errol Morris made excellent use of film and photo images that captured the spirit of the tale without trying to dramatize it with look-a-like actors or reenactments. The cutaways were stylish, although some of them may have been too jolting or dizzying. The characters were well placed, told their sides of the story well, and gave you a full picture of one beauty queen's epic fall. In the end, you pitied the main character yet couldn’t truly identify with her. How many of us would have gone to the lengths she did for a partner who clearly was only "sort of" interested in her? Okay so maybe some of us can relate to that more than others – but when you see the lengths she went to you'll be hard-pressed to find application in your own life or reflection in the life of someone you know. Still, Joyce is an eccentric that is very entertaining to watch — as are all of the other characters. So if you're into trashy tabloids, or just into watching the ranting of a mad woman who was in the headlines for weeks, see this film.
