The EZ Guide To What’s Going On The who, what, when and where of Cape May’s social scene
8/4 Terry-Oke At Congress Hall Bring the kids to the Boiler Room in Congress Hall from 6 to 8pm where they can sing to their heart’s content. At 9pm the grown-ups get their chance to shine at Terry’oke, led by the inimitable Terry O’Brien. When you’re ready to stop singing and get moving, stay put for DJ “Daddy O,” from 12 to 2am. Call 884-8421. 8/4 - 8/6 US Lifesaving Association National Lifeguard Competition Some of the finest lifeguards across the country descend on Cape May for some fierce competition, proving they’ve got what it takes to keep our shores safe (as if we had any doubts). There are three days of events, ranging from the Ironman to rescue races. All events take place near the lifeguard headquarters at the end of Grant Street. Don’t miss you chance to see the best of the best. Events start at 8am. For details, visit usla.org or call the Cape May Beach Patrol at 884-9520. 8/5 Cape May Stage Present Steel Magnolias Whether or not you’ve seen the 1989 classic, you’re sure to enjoy this rousing rendition, performed by veterans like Tony-winner Karen Ziemba, Emmy-nominee Ellen Dolan, Kate Hathaway, Marlena Lustik and more. You’ll learn a thing or two about life, love and loss – we dare you not to laugh (and cry) by the end of this show. Performances are Tuesday through Sunday at 8pm. Tickets are $35 general admission. For reservations call 884-1341. 8/5 The 79th Annual Cape May Baby Parade Toddlers in Tiaras is just a bit creepy for our taste. Engage in more wholesome baby fun during this annual parade, where your cutest youngsters can parade from Congress Hall to Howard Street (no false hair pieces required). Divisions include Pretty Baby, Baby Carriage, Children in Fancy Dress, Children in Comic Dress and Decorated on Wheels, with trophies to the top six entries in each category. Starts at 11am. Call 609-884-9565. 8/6 Artist’s Reception With Victor Grasso At SOMA Prepare yourself for Grasso’s succinctly titled show “New Paintings and Drawings.” The exhibit showcases, well, paintings and drawings, but they’re some of the finest work in the medium Cape May has seen in a very long time.
8/7 Marie Natale Show And Chalfonte Book Signing Award-winning watercolor artist Marie Natale returns to the Chalfonte Hotel with an exhibition of new works featuring this historic seaside resort. The exhibit takes place in conjunction with a book signing by Karen Fox, author of the comprehensive history book, The Chalfonte. Don’t miss this chance to meet the author and artist while enjoying light refreshments in the Magnolia Room, from 2-3:30pm. For details, call the Chalfonte at 884-8409.
Prepare for the annual Baby Parade this Friday In addition to the five fantastic Exit Zero covers, you’ll see some artful watercolor works. The Artist’s Reception runs from 6-9pm, and you’ll enjoy light refreshments and a chance to speak with the artists himself. Located at SOMA NewArt Gallery in the Carpenter’s Square Mall, 31 Perry Street. Consult our interview on page 93 and call 898-7488 for details. 8/6 Mermaids And Mariners Benefit The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts sponsors this event at the Osprey Landing Clubhouse. There will be food, international cheeses, tempting desserts and a top-shelf open bar. Guest can enjoy dancing and live music from Hennessey and Jack. You can even attend dressed as a mermaid or a mariner. Advance VIP tickets are $100, regular advance tickets are $75. VIP hour starts at 6pm, party starts at 7pm. Reserve now at 884-5404. 8/6 Down On The Farm Weekend At Historic Cold Spring Village On Saturday and Sunday, Historic Cold Spring Village gets back to its roots. Visit with your favorite barnyard animals, make take-home crafts, take a horse and carriage ride with Levi the Horse and celebrate the wonders of the American farm. Located on Route 9, a short drive from the heart of Cape May. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for children. For details, call 898-2300.
8/8 Cape May Stage Presents Aging Is Optional Tovah Feldshuh has received multiple Tony nominations, and she’s bringing her unparalleled voice right here to the Robert Shackleton Playhouse. In this last installment of the “Women of Broadway” series, Tovah will entertain audiences with her one-woman show, Aging is Optional. Show opens at 8pm – tickets are $75 and include an afterparty at the Washington Inn. To reserve your tickets, call 884-1341. 8/9 Cape May In Blue And Gray Tour And Dinner Hear how the Civil War divided Cape Island on this tour and dinner. Begin with a trolley ride to the Chalfonte Hotel and tour the Civil War artifact room. Then enjoy a traditional Southern fried chicken dinner and discuss your evening. Cost is $35 for adults, $17 for children, begins at 5:15pm. Call 884-5404 for details. 8/10 Tales of Terror Trolley Ride A costumed guide spins tales of terror from the Victorian Era as the trolley passes flickering gas lamps through the ghostly streets of Cape May on this 30-minute evening ride. Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for children. Departs from the Information Booth at the Washington Street Mall at 7:45. Call 884-5404. Upcoming 8/12 Full Moon Cruise For Family Promise Of Cape May County Enjoy an evening on The Spirit of Cape May. There will be a cash bar, music by Blondage and a Chinese auction at this event, which benefits Family Promise of Cape May County, an organization that provides shelter, meals and support for homeless families in the area. The Police Blotter
GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan – A resident told police that someone entered his home during the night and took five pounds of bacon from the refrigerator. Upon investigation, police discovered his wife had gotten up for a latenight snack, but was afraid to admit it.
Classic Quotations
A Story From The Past “If your lifeguard duties were as good as your singing, a lot of people would be drowning.” Simon Cowell “The problem with the gene pool is that there’s no lifeguard.” David Gerrold “It’s sort of like a lifeguard. They may not do anything for years until something happens.” Senator Richard Sears “A hot lifeguard is like Kleenex. Use once and throw away.” Blair Waldorf “Being a lifeguard doesn’t make me better than you. Wait, yes it does!” Facebook page “I wanna be a lifeguard, hardly any clothes, sand between my toes, white stuff on my nose.” Blotto
The Christian Admiral hosted religious seminars and revivals, and its library was the setting for Reverend McIntire’s popular radio shows, broadcast all over the country. As popular as it was, the Christian Admiral never made a profit for Reverend McIntire. The hotel’s day-to-day operating costs and upkeep proved to be much higher than the revenue it generated. Donations to the Reverend’s ministry and donations in kind from skilled craftsmen kept the Admiral in business. Ben Miller

Weird Word Of The Week
Pterygium - Also known as Surfer’s Eye, pterygium is a benign growth of the conjunctiva, or mucous membrane of the white part of the eye. The exact cause is unknown, but it is thought to be caused by excessive exposure to wind, sunlight and sand. Pterygia is twice as likely to occur in men than women.

Random Fact Of The Week
Cancelled by NBC after its first season, Baywatch was revived in syndication. At its height, it was one of the most popular shows in the world, syndicated in 148 countries and airing on every continent except Antarctica, before being cancelled due to low ratings, 11 years after the first cancellation.
Fortune Cookie Of The Week J “Q. What is K.M.S.? A. Keep Mouth Shut, the golden rule.” J Once a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with beef and broccoli. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editors
C
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
ape May Stage deserves a lot of credit for recruiting nationally acclaimed actors to perform in the Robert Shackleton Playhouse. Without organizations like theirs (and the East Lynne Theater Company) citizens in Cape May looking to enjoy dinner and a show would have to settle for a trip to Frank’s Theatres in Rio Grande – say what you will, Harry Potter is not the adult fare you’re hoping for after clams linguine and a nice bottle of white. It’s a pleasure to enjoy a show at Cape May Stage, but it’s an unexpected delight when the actors end up entertaining you after hours as well. We had just such an experience this past Thursday, when some Exit Zero staffers took a much-need respite from their work and hit up The Boiler Room for a bit of Terry-Oke. We noticed Luke Darnell standing across the bar – he’s one of the actors from the recently completed run of The Understudy. We’d never met him in person, but his face has been splashed across the pages of Exit Zero several times, so we decided to introduce ourselves. Soon enough, the other two actors in The Understudy, G.R. Johnson and Kristen Calgaro, arrived as well, along with a few of-age Cape May Stage interns, and we had ourselves a rollicking Thursday night, full of inappropriate jokes, Gray Goose martinis and a slew of karaoke favorites, ranging from The Proclaimers’ “500 Miles” to a kid-friendly rendition of Cee Lo Green’s “Forget You,” a duet between Calgaro and Terry O’Brien himself. All three actors delivered a hilarious performance of The Understudy the following night, serving up a heady cocktail of
³
wisecracks, dysfunctional relationships and career frustration, followed up by a heartwarming conclusion (no, we don’t use that word unless we really mean it). Congratulations to all the actors involved – it’s rare to meet a group of people who are as enjoyable at work as they are at the bar. AND speaking of great performances, prepare yourselves for Cape May Stage’s next offering, Steel Magnolias, which has its grand opening today. You can’t attend the opening night, because it’s already sold out. However, this is a good indicator that we’ve got a fantastic show on our hands. This should be no surprise, considering the popularity of the original film and the stable of talented actors who will bring the piece to life. Karen Ziemba, a Tony Award winner, Ellen Dolan, an Emmy nominee, and Cape May favorites like Marlena Lustik and Kate Hathaway will all take part in this production, which will likely have you laughing and crying in equal measure. The show plays Tuesdays through Sundays at 8pm until September 10, and you can read about it in our events calendar on page 9.
³
And the cultural offerings just keep on coming. This Saturday, August 6, Victor Grasso has a new show opening at SOMA NewArt Gallery. The exhibit, titled “New Paintings And Drawings,” features the Rockwell-inspired oil paintings that have graced the covers of our Exit Zero color issues, as well as watercolors and drawings. Stop by 31 Perry Street between 6 and 9pm for an Artist’s Reception, where you can chat with the man himself over refreshments. See page 93 for an interview with Victor. At the same time, on the same day, there’s a reception at Gallery D’May on 305 Washington Street for artist Anna Razumovskaya. Her pieces employ bold colors rendered in watercolor and oil. She’s inspired by the grace of the female form (as are many of us, though maybe for other reasons). See our feature on Anna on page 55. We made a special one-time-only appearance at the West Cape May Farmers Market last week (we are simply too busy writing for you folks to make it a regular occurrence), and what a lovely event this is. If you have not yet checked it out, you should do so before it ends its run on August 30. There are lots of vendors hawking eclectic wares from clothing, books and flowers, to food, glorious food. Great sights and smells, and a fun, family-friendly vibe. Speaking of food, glorious food, we’ll let you in on a secret. Elizabeth Degener of Enfin Farms, out on Sunset Boulevard in the Point, has been endearing herself to area carb-lovers with her delicious clay oven-baked breads. Her roadside stand is open Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 10am, but you’d better get there early to stake out your place in line.

Every week our photographer Danielle O’Neal roams the streets of Cape May on a mission... to give away a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. But it’s not quite THAT easy – first, the lucky recipient has to answer three questions related to our issue theme, which this week is all about lifeguards. This week’s winner is Ken Underwood, 52, a water treatment plant operator from Hyde Park, New York. We found Ken strolling the Washington Street Mall. Here are his answers to our piercing questions: Who’d be the better lifeguard... David Hasselhoff or Pamela Anderson? Pamela Anderson. Have you ever given or received mouth-to-mouth resuscitation? I gave mouth-to-mouth when I was an EMT. Have you ever been yelled at or whistled at by a lifeguard? Yes, we were out too far. Ken wins a $50 gift certificate to Uncle Bill’s Pancake House for answering our questions. Congratulations and enjoy! PHOTOGRAPH BY Danielle o’neal

A Local Café with ... a Wholesome Aroma
H
ow to cook Jersey corn is a subject that’s debated from Poverty Beach to the Cove. Boil, grill, steam or microwave? Husks on? Husks off? Soak cobs or not. Add sugar or milk? We’ll leave those decisions to you and get right to the eating. Good corn is already at the farm stands. If you can’t serve it the day you buy, follow this tip to keep it fresh. Wrap unshucked fresh corn in damp paper towels and place in a plastic bag in the refrigerator. It works! Here are some new twists on old favorites like corn salad, fritters and succotash. Try the succotash with some of that leftover cooked corn. You know the story, you thought folks were going to eat two ears each, they only ate one, and you’ve got leftover cooked corn in the refrigerator. We’ve got two corn puddings for you, too, including one to make with canned corn after the fresh ears fade away. Or freeze some fresh kernels now, boil when the mood strikes, and purée with the evaporated milk called for in the recipe. Jersey Fresh Corn Salad 10 minutes serves 4-8
This delicious salad uses garbanzo beans instead of traditional black beans and is substantial enough for a lunch
entrée. Use leftover grilled vegetables, such as those suggested, making it EZ. 4 ears Jersey corn, cooked 1 can garbanzo beans, rinsed and drained 6 grilled asparagus cut in short lengths 1 roasted red pepper, seeded and cut in squares 4 scallions, white and 3” green parts chopped ½ c almonds, chopped and toasted 2 tbsp chopped herbs ½ cup vinaigrette salt and freshly ground pepper Strip corn kernels from the cobs into a large bowl. Add remaining ingredients and toss with vinaigrette. Season with salt and pepper to taste. The New Succotash 30 minutes serves 6-8 Try this version of an old Jersey favorite. Experiment with unusual mushrooms like chanterelles, shiitake, oyster and beech. Fresh limas will be available October 8 at the annual West Cape May Lima Bean Festival! 1 tbsp sunflower or other mild oil 1 ½ c mushrooms, chopped 2 cups cooked lima beans, Jersey fresh or frozen 2 ears Jersey corn, cooked

2 ears Jersey corn 1 egg 1 c flour ½ tsp baking powder ½ tsp salt 2 scallions, white, plus 3” green, chopped 1 clove garlic, minced 1 ½ tsp fresh ginger root, grated 1 green chile, seeded and minced 2 tsp curry powder 2 tbsp vegetable oil for frying Carefully, with a sharp knife, strip the kernels from the corn into a large bowl. There should be about 1 ½ cups. In a medium bowl, lightly beat the egg. Add the corn, flour, baking powder and salt, mixing well. Add the scallions, garlic, ginger, chile and curry, mixing again. Heat the oil in a nonstick pan. Drop the batter by a tablespoon into the oil making pancakes about 3” in diameter. Fry until bottoms are brown, about 2 minutes; turn and cook about a minute and a half more. Drain on paper towels and serve with yogurt or our own version of raita, the Indian condiment, “Cucumber Salad,” (Exit Zero, July 21).
Fresh Corn Pudding 25 minutes, 40-45 minutes to bake serves 8 We didn’t say it was low fat – just good! 12 or 13 ears fresh corn (we like white), husked ¼ c sugar 3 tbsp flour 2 tsp baking powder 1 ½ tsp salt 6 large eggs 2 c whipping cream ½ c butter, melted Optional – nutmeg Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cut the kernels from the cobs into a large bowl – should yield about 6 cups. In a small bowl, combine sugar, flour, baking powder and salt. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, cream and melted butter. Slowly add the sugar mixture to the egg mixture, whisking until smooth; stir in corn. Pour mixture into a lightly greased 13x9 baking dish. Sprinkle with nutmeg if desired. Bake for 40-45 minutes or until set. Let stand 5 minutes before serving. Finally, here’s a recipe to enjoy after the fresh corn is gone. Mary Kurkowski’s Baked Corn Pudding 10 minutes, 1 hour to bake serves 8 This recipe, created by Dave’s mom, is a favorite of the entire Kurkowski family. 1 can crushed creamed corn 3 tablespoons sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 3 tablespoons flour 3 eggs 1 cup evaporated skim milk Put corn in a bowl and add sugar, salt and flour. Mix well. Break the eggs, separating the yolks and whites in two bowls, and beat. The whites should be stiff. Add the yolks and milk to the corn mixture and mix. Gently fold in beaten whites. Bake at 350 degrees for one hour in a greased casserole dish.

Anna Razumovskaya: Contemporary Master
A
The acclaimed Russian artist hosts a reception and exhibit at Gallery D’May
n artist’s reception will be held at Gallery D’May on Saturday, August 6, from 6-9pm. Guest can meet talented and highly-acclaimed Russian artist Anna Razumovskaya, whose work will be displayed at the gallery through September 20. One of the most exciting and collectible artists on the contemporary scene, Razumovskaya graduated from Russian State University for the Arts, and has also formally studied art in Germany, Belgium and Holland. Her paintings have been exhibited worldwide in solo shows in New York, Paris, Toronto, Amsterdam, Antwerp and Berlin, and in private collections in the United States, Canada, Austria, Holland, France and Australia. While Razumovskaya’s art has a definite romanticism, with its dreamy depictions reminiscent of Renaissance portraiture, it also has a distinctly modern edge. Bold colors, rendered in watercolor, oil, acrylic and silk, a passionate and confident application of paint to canvas, together with abstract elements and a sensual dynamic, set her
One of Razumovskaya’s dynamic pieces. work apart. Razumovskaya is particularly inspired by the elegance of the female form, depicting it by turns as classically demure or alluring and provocative. In describing her philosophy, Razumovskaya says, “If an artist were asked what he was thinking of while creating his work, he would hardly give a reasonable answer to that question. This process cannot be analyzed. It is like a miracle. You are just

drawing and that is all… simply not thinking of anything definite. The moment you start thinking, that’s it – an unnecessary stroke, unnecessary detail. Quickly, easily, brightly: this is the way I draw, the same way I live. My art is a reflection of my life, a reflection of myself.” Gallery owner Dawn DeMayo has a special surprise in store for both the artist and for patrons attending the reception. She has commissioned two gowns by local aspiring designer Sarah Reeves, inspired by the gowns in the Razumovskaya works, to be modeled at the event. There will also be an ice sculpture of one of the gowns, from which caviar will be served. Dawn tells us: “We are thrilled and honored that Anna is coming to Cape May, and so are our clients. Anna is considered the leading figurative artist of our time. What sets her apart from the rest is her ability to create a wonderful balance between perfectionism and spontaneity. Visitors to the gallery who view her work are moved in a positively visceral way.” For more information, call 884-4465, or visit their website at www.GalleryD’May.com.

I
The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone
n every demeaning, thankless job, there is that one person who is super excited about that demeaning, thankless job. Where I work, it’s Veronica, a spunky Romanian girl who’s as enthusiastic as a person can be about making coffee and delivering drinks. She is petite, but she is feisty if you get in her way while she’s taking care of a table. Stand in front of the computer terminal too long, trying to remember where the “sauce on side” button is, and Veronica will come at you with two little Romanian fists. “I need to plug in an order!” she’ll yell, her high-pitched accent piercing your ears as she nudges you out of the way. And, if there’s ever a crowd of big, burly servers waiting for drinks at the bar, Veronica will muscle her way through, her head of bouncy, black curls always making its way front and center. I am not annoyed by Veronica’s overzealousness; every restaurant needs it. I once bought a cappuccino to a table and, from across the dining room, Veronica could tell that I’d forgotten the cinnamon
dusting. Nevermind that my customer would never have missed it, Veronica came bouncing over, eager to know if my slighted guest would, in fact, care for some cinnamon. Then, she felt compelled to explain my incompetence as a server. “Sorry about Molly,” she said. “She’s only forgetful because she is… um… in love.” “What the hell was that?” I asked later. “I am not in love.” “Well,” Veronica told me, exasperated, “I had to tell them something.” I feel bad for Veronica a great deal of the time. She gets so invested in her tables that she panics if she can’t find a salt shaker or if we run out of calamari, and a lousy tip will
send her into a tailspin – a tailspin that’s magnified times ten after just half a glass of wine. Lately, I am the opposite. I’m not a bad server, but I do have to fake enthusiasm for this job. I am annoyed just by the sight of diners coming through the door. I give away tables. I throw comment cards in the trash. I think it would be great if that party of 20 didn’t show. A lousy tip won’t phase me, and last week, when I found out someone overbooked weddings in the private dining room, my reaction was to laugh. Sometimes, I wish I had the passion for this job that Veronica does. But, then again, if every Cape May restaurant needs overzealousness, then every restaurant needs that server who can fake it, too. I may not have that ‘go-team-go’ kind of attitude, but I think I provide something equally important: balance. Maybe sometimes I could stand to be a bit more enthusiastic; that’s probably fair. But I think the restaurant industry needs people like me, too. If nothing else, I’m there to f lag Veronica after that half a glass of wine.

Lifeguard Must Haves
The finest things from the shops of this charmed city... by Kate Chadwick
Oakley Shades From Sunglass Menagerie
Lifeguard Tee From Authentic Sportswear
Zinc Oxide From Swain’s
Shades are beyond essential for both lifeguards and lifeguard wannabes, and Sunglass Menagerie is the place to get them. The selection is totally outrageous, with lifeguard tested-and-approved favorites like Oakley, Maui Jim and Ray-Ban, and the staff is knowledgeable. The Oakleys pictured here are priced from $109-$654. 107 Liberty Way, 609-884-8844, www.thesunglassmenagerie.com.
Whether you’re a real live lifeguard or you just want to pretend you are for happy hour purposes at the Rusty Nail, look the part with a lifeguard T-shirt and shorts from Authentic Sportswear. The T-shirt is an eye-catching bright red with a white cross, and the shorts are white with a red cross. They are $13 each. 508 Washington Street, 609-898-3388.
Any lifeguard will tell you that protection from the pesky rays of the sun is critical, especially if you want to preserve those fetching good looks. So fetch some zinc oxide from Swain’s and apply liberally. Or ask your favorite lifeguard to apply it for you…Solar Sense and Ocean Potion, $3.49 and $4.49 respectively. 305 Jackson Street, 609-884-8578, www.swainsacehardware.com.
Lifeguard Book From Atlantic Books
Lifeguard Hat From Rip Tide
FiveFingers Shoes From Casale’s
No, it’s not a picture book, but there are photos. And while there is no reading on the job in the old lifeguard stand, Lifeguards Of The Jersey Shore by Michael Fowler, Bernard A. Olsen and Edward Olsen from Atlantic Books is a fascinating read for the lifeguard in your life, or anyone who loves the Jersey Shore. 500 Washington Street, 609898-9694, www.atlanticbooks.com.
Protect those all-important tresses from the damages of wind, sun, sand and salt with this lifeguard baseball cap from Riptide East. It works on the beach, around town on your bike, or just throw it on if you’re having a bad hair day. It’s perfect for both guys and girls, and it’s also a steal at $10. 315 Ocean Street, #15, Washington Commons, 609-884-9004.
Lifeguarding involves quite a bit of sitting still and keeping an eye on things, so when you have to move, make it count with FiveFingers Barefoot Shoes from Casale’s Shoes. These hotter-than-hot shoes are designed to keep the feet stimulated and healthy by allowing them to move naturally and freely. $75-125. 415 Washington Street, 609884-3148, www.casalesshoes.com.

The Answer Lady
T
Wise answers to perplexing questions
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I have an amazing new boyfriend – smart, funny and sexy. The other night we went to the Boiler Room to meet some friends for drinks and dancing. Unfortunately, he just may be the worst dancer I’ve ever seen. He’s enthusiastic, but his skills leave quite a LOT to be desired. I’m not saying this is a deal-breaker, but yikes. Am I the shallowest girl ever? – Dancing Queen Dear Dancing Oh no, dear – the Answer Lady has dealt with more shallow girls than you (but not by much). Presumably, you have been seeing your beau for at least a short while to be aware of all his good qualities, and yet the other night was the first time you actually saw him dance. So clearly, dancing is not something that you do, or plan to do, every night of the week. Sure, some people look
like a million bucks out there on the dance floor, while others look like Elaine from that priceless Seinfeld episode. While the Answer Lady can appreciate the appeal of a man who can dance – let’s face it, they are kind of few and far between – try to keep his good qualities in your mind while patiently watching him gyrate. Don’t, by the way, discount his enthusiasm. He probably knows he is not Fred Astaire, but the fact that he gets out there anyway says a lot about him. If you really feel strongly
about dancing, take him to the VFW on a Friday night and ask Tom Cupp to teach him a few things. Above all, appreciate the positive, lest you lose him to a wallflower. Dear Answer Lady My parents have a major anniversary coming up. They don’t want a party, and they have every material possession they could possibly need. I’m stumped for a gift – help! – Out of Ideas Dear Out For heaven’s sake, dear – why not contact one of the excellent area photographers and have a portrait taken? Whether it’s just you, or with a spouse and grandchildren, siblings, or all of the above, this gift is a nobrainer. Our own Aleksey Moryakov and Danielle O’Neal have excellent portfolios, and will work with you to get a pictureperfect photo. Or if your folks have ever appeared in Exit Zero, don’t forget you can order copies of those photos in several sizes, or have them put on a personalized EZ cover. Photos are priceless, and they make a great gift for almost any occasion. Say cheese!

The Theater Column
I
Arts Editor Tom Sims reviews East Lynne Theater Company’s “The World of Dorothy Parker”
’ve always been a sucker for a good short story. O. Henry and John Updike come to mind as some of my favorite masters. Dorothy Parker is an expert storyteller, but most of us English majors have rarely read beyond her most famous story, “Big Blonde.” Suffice it to say that Gayle Stahlhuth, Artistic Director for East Lynne Theater Company, has read “beyond the blonde” (as an English major I should be ashamed of that line). The world premiere of The World of Dorothy Parker is not just a review of Parker’s best prose, but also a night of music, dancing, poetry and dramatized short stories. Parker had a knack for expressing herself in a way we all only wish we could. Whether the topic was falling in love, falling out of love, or disdain for hypocrites, Parker said out loud what many of us might only think in silence. Stahlhuth says, “When I dove into Parker’s works to find material for the show, I was fascinated by her choice of words and her turns of phrase, whether they were in
The cast of “Dorothy Parker” delivers an evening packed with poetry, drama and wit. a poem, short story, or one of her reviews. She just nailed the thought or the emotion she was looking for, which is why her work is still read. The Portable Dorothy Parker has never been out of print since it was first published in 1944. Then of course there is that wicked funny wit! One of my favorites is, ‘You can take a horticulture, but you can’t
make her think.’” This 90-minute show begins with musical selections appropriate for the time period from the great George Gershwin. Many of Parker’s poems are recited throughout the night. The short stories speak to timeless themes of longing, romantic awkwardness, and maintaining relationships under duress. Stahlhuth says “All the pieces will resonate with today’s audiences, but ‘The Lovely Leave’ is perhaps the most poignant. It is the story of a couple during World War II who thought they had 24 hours together before he is shipped off, only to find they have just one hour.” This production features a cast of familiar faces: Suzanne Dawson, Tiffany-Leigh Moskow, Drew Seltzer and John Cameron Weber. This ensemble is familiar with one another as well, which is evident in the ease and charm with which they interact. Long story short, The World of Dorothy Parker is a night of entertainment beautifully orchestrated and wonderfully brought to life.

t’s not you, it’s me. It’s a classic cliché, a way to tell someone that they’re a great person, they’ve done everything right, and that the reasons things didn’t work out lie squarely on your own shoulders. Relationship-wise, it’s the equivalent of throwing yourself on the grenade (although you probably don’t deserve any medals for heroism). So to Sarah, who joined me at Godmother’s recently, I have to say that it wasn’t you. It was totally, completely me. On the corner of Broadway and Sunset, Godmother’s does a brisk business, with a stream of diners pouring in the door all evening for traditional Italian cuisine. Sarah and I shared loaded garlic bread as an appetizer. We’d picked Godmother’s because it had a reasonable selection of vegetarian dishes, so she enjoyed a whole wheat linguini loaded with vegetables. I indulged my inner carnivore with the flat iron sirloin pizzaoli, topped with peppers, onions, mushrooms and mozzarella. We both left room for dessert, the traditional cannoli for me, fresh fruits and berries for her. Since the
restaurant was full of people of all ages, it’s clear that Godmother’s has something to suit young, old, vegetarian, meat eater, and everyone else. Sarah was a lovely dinner companion. The conversation was intelligent and wideranging, and we solved several of the world’s problems before dessert was served. But I wasn’t at my best. Our date was on the hottest day of the year, and I’d been working outside in the blast furnace for much of it.
By evening I was really spent. I also recently had minor surgery, and the after-effect has been a month-long headache. Had I been more on the ball, I would’ve recognized that it wasn’t a good dating night, and begged Sarah’s indulgence. But I’m a guy, a little exhaustion and a headache won’t stop me, so I soldiered on. I thought I’d done okay. Not my finest hour, no, but I’d done okay. Until, standing on the corner after dinner, Sarah asked if I had a sense of humor. Uh-oh. You mean you couldn’t tell? Did I sweat all the humor out during the day? Or was it just completely buried under the maximum-strength Tylenol? Right then I realized that maybe I’d blown it. Sarah, my apologies. It wasn’t you, it was me. I can do better, and I’d like to prove it to you. Send an email to info@exitzero.us, I’ll be in touch, and we’ll go to dinner at one of the Cape’s fine restaurants. Afterwards I’ll write all about it, a combined date and restaurant review. Your name will be changed, the restaurant’s won’t. This time I’ll come with my sense of humor.

An Interview With Victor Grasso
V
Arts Editor Tom Sims chats with the artist about his new show at SOMA NewArt Gallery
ictor Grasso has a new exhibit at Soma NewArt Gallery with an opening reception this Saturday, August 6 from 6–9pm. We sat with the artist inside his studio in North Cape May. This new exhibit was inspired by Norman Rockwell. Explain that influence. After my last show a year ago [“Up from the Wreckage,” also at SOMA] I was ready to create something different. I was bringing a piece down to a buyer in Washington DC, and we all went to see an exhibit of Rockwell’s work. It was the world’s largest private collection of Rockwell pieces that filmmakers Steven Spielberg and George Lucas had collected over the years. What struck me the most is that the artwork was about people. He’s always described as an illustrator, but really he’s a painter. The way he applied paint, the way he captured a mood, and told a story — it’s amazing. My plan was to create five covers for the color editions of Exit Zero and make them modern Rockwell paintings, showing life in this very Rockwellian little town. I used my friends and people from the town as models,
Grasso’s “Black Bolt,” one of several paintings to be displayed at SOMA NewArt Gallery starting August 6. and it all came together very nicely. It was different because I was the director, producer, and sometimes the actor all rolled into one. Some consider Rockwell’s work too romanticized, that he was too much of an
idealist. What is your take? Did your favorite movie draw an emotion from you? Does music draw emotions from you? None of it’s real. It’s all inspired by something real, but it’s not necessarily how it is. So to romanticize a bit — that’s the art. It seems this new exhibit is not as dark as previous shows. Could that be because you’re a new father? Maybe in some subconscious way having a baby has influenced this work. It may have lightened my mood. My new daughter is an absolute love and joy, and if this show doesn’t seem as dark as others in the past that was probably her influence. I can’t imagine why it wouldn’t be – she’s amazing and beautiful. What should people know before they go and see this show? The watercolors and drawings are important works. There are many new watercolors, and the one called “The Hurricane” is one of my favorites because there’s one focal point on the right, then it’s all about negative space. There’s a lot going on for such a little subject. SOMA NewArt Gallery is located in the Carpenter’s Square Mall, 31 Perry Street. For details, call 609-898-7488.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
t’s not that I have anything against these lifeguard pups these days: they seem a fit bunch of lads and lassies, and were I (against the odds, I confess) to suffer from a mild attack of drowning, I would feel safe in their muscular, tanned hairless arms, and open my mouth with my last gasp in anticipation of some splendid resuscitation. But it’s just not the same as In My Day, when we lifeguards were never in our seats unless to stanch a wound, fire off a signal flare or fetch more ammunition. Mind you, in those days, rip tides and waves were the very least of our troubles. Indeed, the biggest waves were those caused by the man-eating Great Whites, pods of Killer Killer Whales (that was no typo: Killer Whales are gentle beasts, for the most part, despite their cruel name, whereas Killer Killer Whales are their baser, murderous cousins – double the size and ten times the foe) and Kraken that used to prowl these shores looking for anyone stupid enough to swim without an escorting gunboat. And then there were the pirates; ravenous
bunches of cut-throats who would keelhaul a man just for the swimming trunks off his buttocks, or the buttocks in his trunks. We had the same remedy for all of these pests: a steam-powered harpoon gun that would fire a bolt a half mile and puncture a steel-hulled boat/thick-skinned beast from the deep/Wildwooder. And I also carried a waxed leather bag with a Colt 45 pistol in it, and my trusty Bowie knife (given to me by the Colonel himself in the last hours of The Alamo).
Mind you, we did not take proper care of ourselves. Sunblock was unheard of, and we used to coat ourselves (and each other: we were very Spartan in our tastes) with coconut oil to better tan. On Day 1 of the season I was pale as a maid’s belly, on Day 2 I was roasted red as a beet, and by Day 5, once my entire skin had peeled off, I was brown as a piece of leather, though a lot more smooth. And we had not much in the way of eye protection: it made our Who-Can-GazeAt-The-Sun contests the more competitive, not to say dangerous, as the losers would inevitably be struck blind for several days. Of course, we did rescue people, too, but more as a side-effect of our battles with the monsters and pirates, when and if we happened upon any struggling swimmers as we waded back to shore dripping with blood, adrenaline and admiring young ladies/gents/both, depending upon one’s predilections. In fact, I do miss those days, and may liven this season up by dropping an old depth charge onto a certain wreck offshore and waking the Giant Squid within…

The Cape May Crossword
None of that generic nonsense you see in other papers... a puzzle just for “Exit Zero”! By Jon Roth So YOU love crosswords? Great. Sit down, get a cup (or glass) of your favorite beverage, relax and enjoy this puzzle. The answers to the crossword are all related to this week’s issue. Our theme this week: lifeguards. The solution can be found on the front page of our website, www.exitzero.us. Across 5 . This stroke is mandatory if you’re going to be a lifeguard – it involves using both arms to push water down and a whip-like kick. 9 . If you’re a lifeguard, you’ll definitely want to wear these to protect your eyes. 11. This is the high-pitched tool lifeguards will use to call you out of the water. 13 . This organization is holding their national championship competition in Cape May from August 4 through 6. 15 . You’ll find the Cape May lifeguard headquarters at the end of this road. 17 . Spread a bit of this on your nose and you’ll be sunburn free. 18 . This strong channel of water flowing seaward from the shore can often cast hapless bathers out to sea. 19 . This is the acronym for our town’s lifeguard organization. 20 . If your eyes have too much sun exposure, you could develop this – a benign, yellowwhite coating near the cornea. Check the weird word on page 12 for a clue.
C.J. will save your life, if she doesn’t give you a stroke first, that is. 6 Down.
21 . He’s the hirsute German favorite who saved lives on Baywatch. 22 . In Newport, Rhode Island, before coeducational bathing was allowed, this type of dog acted as a lifeguard for female bathers. 23 . If someone’s taken on a lot of water, you’ll want to try this maneuver so they can spit it back up, which involves bumping the sternum. Down 1 . These cartilaginous fish with a taste for blood might be a bit too much for a lifeguard to handle (without a harpoon, at least). 2 . This handy box is loaded with all you need to ease the pain of a sprain, cut or jellyfish sting. 3 . Another maneuver to help an unconscious victim of drowning is mouth-to-mouth _____________. 4 . The popular series Baywatch is set on the beaches of this county. 6 . This Canadian beauty played C.J. in Baywatch. 7 . The most difficult of swimming styles, this
involves simultaneous arm and leg movement with a dolphin kick, resulting in a wave-like body movement. 8 . In this annual competition, members of various South Jersey patrols run, row and swim to prove their mettle. 9 . If you see a white-and-black checked flag, that means there’s no swimming in the water, only _______. 10. This swimming style gives you the advantage of easy breathing while you reach one arm, then the other, over your head and into the water – it’s a bit tricky to see where you’re going, though. 12 . This is the name for the red flotation device lifeguards carry with them in the water. 14 . This course is designed to test the skills learned in lifeguard training. It requires a lot of impressive feats, including swimming several different strokes, lifting heavy objects and diving. 16 . All the lifeguards in town flock to this bar. 22 . This is the television network that showed Baywatch, then canned it after the first year.

Activity Of The Week
I
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: West Cape May Farmers Market
nspired by the great meals you’re enjoying on your Cape May vacation? Go ahead and create your own delicious dinner. A simple, homemade meal can be a break for your budget and your waistline. No need to match the skills of your favorite chef – even a humble hamburger tastes festive with a fresh Jersey tomato. Add a dessert of sliced peaches and you’ll feel like a gourmet. The local farmers are ready with the ingredients. Rent a bike on Tuesday afternoon and make your way over to the West Cape May Farmers Market. Fresh summer produce can add a gourmet touch to the simplest of meals, and farmers from the Cape May area bring the best of the season to you – green beans, zucchini, blueberries, new potatoes. There is something charming about riding home with your bike basket full of fruits and vegetables. Add a bouquet of flowers to feel positively Parisian – your dinner, no matter how simple, is sure to be a hit. Not in the mood to cook? Bring your guests to the Farmers Market. They’ll catch a glimpse of the year-round community
beyond Cape May’s beaches, and you can enjoy live music along with your pulled pork, crab cakes, fresh lemonade and pie. Try the kettle corn for an appetizer or dessert. You can also sample crafts, games and shopping – check out the antiques, art, books, clothing and jewelry along with the fresh produce. The West Cape May Farmers Market is
held at the Municipal Complex, 732 Broadway, every Tuesday from 3pm to 7:30pm. This year, this weekly community event is celebrating its tenth anniversary. Check the website for the schedule of performers. Don’t miss Jersey Fresh Family Fun Day on August 16, when the community salutes college students returning to school; and the Ten Year Birthday Bash on August 23. Walk or ride your bike – parking is limited, and waiting for a space might ruin your community spirit. Don’t rush – take a moment to talk to the vendors. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses and hand wipes – al fresco dining can be messy. Some vendors accept credit cards, but cash, especially small bills, will simplify your transactions. Bring patience so you’ll be ready for the occasional line, as good food is not necessarily fast food. And, if you’re planning to stock your freezer with crab cakes for the weekend, bring a small cooler. Summer is made for simple dinners. Pour a glass of wine, slice some tomatoes and cucumbers, add some cheese and ring the dinner bell. There’s watermelon for dessert. Next week: Elaine’s Dinner Theater

Adoption fee is $95.

Bird Droppings
I
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
t happened again – an encounter with an ordinary (meaning normal, meaning non-birding) human being while I was bird watching on the beach between Cape May and Cape May Point, and he wasn’t. I figured he’d figured me for a nerd. Instead he asked me to identify a bird he’d seen on the beach. This interaction is becoming all too common and I’m beginning to get borderline depressed. See, I really enjoyed being a social misfit. The nerd at the family reunion. The social equivalent of a leisure suit and disco club-attire wadded at the unused end of the closet. I really enjoyed being off the radar and reaping all the benefits of being a social outcast. A bird watcher. Being an outcast means you don’t have to follow sports. You don’t have to know who is how many games out of first place. You don’t even have to know what sport is in season. Being an outcast means that nobody
will want you to be a bridesmaid or groomsman (or bridesman or groomsgal, whatever the case may be). This means you won’t have to dish out mucho bucks for a dress you’ll never wear again or a ton of money for a bachelor party that you’ll wind up regretting at some point. Being an outcast means that you are already immune from the ire of your
neighbors. This means you don’t have to worry when you don’t cut the lawn, or wash and wax your car, or fail to buy more Girl Scout cookies than you can possibly eat in a year. But all this wonderful buffering between me and the rest of the world has been eroded away. There are articles about birds and bird watching in every in-f light magazine. There are TV shows dedicated to the activity. There are mystery novels that weave birding into the plot. There are physicians who are prescribing it for kids suffering from ADHD and for adults dying of boredom. More and more people are finding bird watching to be a perfectly acceptable activity. On par, so to speak, with golf, going to the beach, buying souvenirs. There are actually people who come to Cape May and slot in a morning to go on a bird walk. Normal people. As normal as you. As

normal as me, being a bird watcher, used not-to-be. I feel an identity crisis coming on. I feel that the best years of my life are behind me. I feel like it’s only a matter of time before I’ll be talking about Eagles, and not the ones with feathers! Soon I’ll be waxing my car and discussing the best ways to kill crab grass with my neighbor. Whose name I will have to learn. I’ll have to throw out all the old clothes being fused into metamorphic strata in the closet in order to find room for the whole new wardrobe I’ll need to buy. Because of all the weight I’ve gained eating Girl Scout cookies. All because the avocational eddy I chose became cool. All because tens of millions of normal people changed sides and became birders. Oh well. There’s always butterf ly watching. That couldn’t possibly get popular, could it? If you’d like to meet a lot of other “normal” people who enjoy birding, consider going on a Cape May Bird Observatory Bird walk – there’s a few to choose from every

The Dating Column
T
Stella Dixon's take on romance on Old Cape Island
hey say that men are from Mars and women are from Venus. Usually, I like to think we’re all a part of the same solar system, but there’s one subject which makes finding common ground difficult: cheating. I’ve been debating with Cape May Martians in my life about what's worse for a woman – a significant other who falls in love with someone else, or a significant other who sleeps with someone else. Men think I’m nuts, but I think the former would be easier to cope with. See, I can understand falling in love with another person. I can sympathize with it. The heart wants what the heart wants. Most of the guys I’ve fallen for, I didn’t want anything to do with, initially. But such is life; love is inconvenient. Men have lost that lovin’ feeling for me because they’ve found it with another woman, and no matter how it hurts, I can't begrudge someone a change of heart. But sleeping with someone else, someone who doesn’t mean anything to you, is not something I can understand. What are we, dogs in heat? “But it’s just sex,” my guy friends have told me. “It doesn’t mean anything.” And
that’s exactly the point. If it doesn’t mean anything to you, then you’ve thrown away your girl’s trust for… nothing? You’ve humiliated her for… just sex? For the love of God, at least tell me that you’re head-over-heels for this person, that she’s your soul mate, your one and only. Just sex? That’s just hurtful. I can count on one hand the number of men I know in their 20s and 30s who are faithful. As far as I’m concerned, that’s an epidemic. The problem is that cheating is in
vogue. It’s cool, and even cooler to refuse to take responsibility for one’s indiscretion. Tiger Woods, Arnold, and Congressman Wiener are not sex addicts; they’re just giant boobs. I understand that men are wired differently; temptation is a different beast on Mars, my friends have told me. But part of being a real man is having some willpower. This doesn’t mean that I’m against playing the field. If you want to date other people, go ahead. Have a blast. Sow those oats. Sleep with four different women at once, for all I care. It doesn’t necessarily mean our relationship has to be over, even. Exclusivity might just be overrated. But let me know. Because convincing me that I’m in a monogamous relationship when I’m not goes beyond hurting my feelings. My embarrassment will subside and my heart will mend, but herpes lasts forever. I don’t mean to sound bitter. I know that, when it comes to romance, all of us – men and women alike – are aliens discovering a foreign planet. We think we’re looking for great love or hot sex, and I suppose we are. But, perhaps, what we want most of all is to discover some form of intelligent life.

The Movie Column
C
Tom Sims, Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews "50/50"
all this film Revenge of the Character Actors! Sure, maybe some of stars of the new film 50/50 would not call themselves character actors, but they do tend to play the same type of character from part to blessedly familiar part. Some actors resist being called a character actor for fear it limits their role choices. But could Clint Eastwood ever play in a Woody Allen movie? Some roles are just meant to be, and the Cape May Film Festival reveres and celebrates the destinies of some of the county’s leading character actors. In the comedy 50/50, Joseph GordonLevitt, who was in Inception and 500 Days of Summer (you may best know him as the sassy teen from the series 3rd Rock from the Sun), plays Adam, a normal guy who has just been told he has cancer. Right, I did say cancer and I did say this film was a comedy. This is the story of one young man’s struggle to fight a very rare form of cancer. If the subject matter hits too close to home, maybe you should see the film anyway. Seth Rogen plays Adam’s best friend, Kyle. This part is no stretch for Rogen (who, considering all of his success at the box office,
Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a young cancer patient in "50/50" would probably never consider himself a character actor). He plays his usual rude, off-balanced, off-color character role. I usually find him annoying but in this film he works perfectly. Anna Kendrick, who was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting
Is paying the electric bill painful? It doesn’t have to be.
Actress for her wonderful job as a squeamish, awkward assistant to George Clooney in Up in the Air, plays a squeamish, awkward doctoral candidate who is Adam’s assigned therapist. She is wonderful here too. Who doesn’t love Anjelica Huston, here playing Adam’s mother? And Bryce Dallas Howard (Ron’s daughter) turns in an equally impressive performance as Adam’s reluctant girlfriend. You won’t be able to see this movie for nearly two months, but when you get the chance, take it! This film’s funny moments are laugh out loud, yet what will stick with you are the deeply moving scenes that are as much a slice of life as they are a great commentary on it. The dialogue is subtle – sometimes words are replaced by brilliant expressions from this amazingly talented cast. Right down to Adam’s “chemo buddies,” the casting in this film was just as brilliant as the performances. Kudos to relative newcomers Will Reiser (writer, and cousin of actor/comedian Paul Reiser) and director Jonathan Levine. Don’t let the subject throw you or worse yet scare you. Add this film to one I just recently reviewed, Another Earth, as Oscar-worthy on several fronts.

In the fall of 2001 I was told that I may never walk again. I am so grateful for the wonderful doctors and technology that have given me my life back. Others are not as fortunate. After my injury I researched different charities dedicated to spinal cord awareness. As an avid surfer, I was particularly interested in the Life Rolls On Foundation (www.liferollson.org). Life Rolls On (LRO) is a non-profit 501(c)3 Foundation that exists to be a grassroots resource and an advocate on behalf of young people who have sustained a spinal cord injury (SCI). Their tagline, “Instilling in people that life with SCI does indeed roll on.”
