The Police Blotter
ORCHARD PARK, New York – A resident phoned police to report a white male walking west on Route 20, and said he was wearing “funny clothes with lots of colors, a funny hat, and carrying a large bag.” She reported, “He looks like he doesn’t belong in Orchard Park.”
Classic Quotations
A Story From The Past “Now the thing about having a baby – and I can’t be the first person to have noticed this – is that thereafter you have it.” Jean Kerr “Babies are such a nice way to start people.” Don Herold “A two-year old is kind of like having a blender, but you don’t have a top for it.” Jerry Seinfeld “I didn’t know how babies were made until I was pregnant with my fourth child.” Loretta Lynn “My friend has a baby. I’m recording all the noises he makes so later I can ask him what he meant.” Stephen Wright “A baby is God’s opinion that life should go on.” Carl Sagan
“Above the old bath houses are the same names as in years gone by, Maguire’s, and further on, Shield’s. A second generation of Japanese conduct the “Art Store,” but a touch of modernity is given by “Arnold’s Hotel” where before the era of prohibition, good dinners and good times were to be had. Still in the window rests the frame of scarlet lobsters, an enticement still, but inside the gayety is subdued to the level of the refreshment now offered, ‘near beer’.” – South Jersey, A History, 1664-1923

Weird Word Of The Week
FONTANELLE – The fontanelles are the soft spots on an infant’s head. They enable the bony plates of the skull to flex, allowing the child’s head to pass through the birth canal. The ossification of the bones of the skull causes the fontanelles to close over by the baby’s second birthday.

If you think you know what establishment you’re staring at, then you have a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter – follow the instructions carefully. And, don’t worry if you have never used Facebook before – it’s easy! Just ask your six-year-old nephew for help. To enter, look for the mystery photo at facebook.com/ exitzeropublishing. Good luck!
Random Fact Of The Week
They can scream and holler for what they want or need, but newborns cannot technically cry. There is no ability to create or release tears until about three weeks of age. Furthermore, in some cases, it is not at all unusual for babies to shed their first tears until around four or five months of age.
Fortune Cookie Of The Week J “You will move to a wonderful new home within the year.” J Once a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with chicken pad thai. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editors
W
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
e’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: some folks bemoan the dearth of arts in our fair city, but we’re having none of it. Internationally known artist Anna Razumovskaya will be exhibiting her beautiful works at Gallery D’May through September 20. We had the opportunity to chat with the artist recently, and found her as vibrant and accessible as her artwork. Now 42 years old, Anna has been painting for 25 years, and her enthusiasm for what she does is infectious. Since her work features such a heavy emphasis on the female form (not that there’s anything wrong with that), the first thing we asked her was, “Will you ever paint men?” Anna laughed and replied that she does plan to do so, in an effort to “shake things up.” We also wanted to know if she uses models, or whether inspiration comes fully-formed from her imagination. Anna replied, “Both, really. I am always thinking and imagining new paintings – it never really stops. We have a beautiful studio, and I feel that discipline is critical, so I work every day from 11-6 or so. You must exercise your hand, you have to keep it moving, even if you don’t necessarily know what you will be painting.” When asked what she would be doing if not painting, she replied without hesitation, “Fashion, I would definitely be working in fashion.” Anna and her manager and husband, Eugene, moved to Canada after emigrating from their native Russia in the ’90s. They have just finished a 13-city tour of Britain, where Anna’s work is especially in demand. We inquired about their family
life, and Anna told us they are the parents of 22-year-old twin sons. “One of them is very businesslike, while the other is very creative, an artist, like me. When I try to talk to him about how difficult the life of a painter can be, he says ‘Mom, I don’t have a choice.’ Of course, I can understand that all too well. I love what I do, and I can’t believe I get to do this every day.” Make it a point to stop by the Gallery D’May, on the Washington Street Mall, to check out the work of this exciting artist. Staying on the subject of art, we checked out the opening of Victor Grasso’s show at SOMA NewArt Gallery on Saturday, and are glad to report that it was the local artist’s most successful show yet. The gallery was packed with people enjoying the brilliant work of the man who has been painting the covers of our special color issues for the last five years. All five of Victor’s five covers this year (including two that you haven’t seen yet) were on show, along with a dozen or so other works, all exhibiting this young artist’s mastery of brush and canvas. A good many paintings
³
were sold the night before, at the preview, which was great to see, although three of our favorite pieces still remained as we went to press... the first color cover of this year, featuring a surfer and a beach tagger, and the September and October covers (neither of which you have seen yet). It always helps to have complementary wines and hors d’oeuvres from 410 Bank Street, one of Cape May’s finest restaurants, to enjoy as you mingle with the crowd. Our crowd’s after-party was at The Brown Room – all in all, a quality night out, as compared with a recent Monday night, which ended in a very undignified and shameful way at the door of one of Cape May’s favorite bars, but more on that in another column. By the way, Victor’s show will continue at SOMA (in Carpenter’s Square Mall) through September 5, to be followed by an exhibition by Stan Sperlak, another of our favorites. See what we mean by the quality of art on display in this fine town? Wait, wasn’t it five minutes ago that we were talking about how summer is officially upon us? Seems like it, but on Wednesday, August 31, Cape May City Elementary School is hosting a Welcome New Students Open House from 9:30-11am. This is an annual event which allows the kids to get their feet wet, as it were, before the official first day of school. Parent and children are welcome to come in for an overview of the school year by School Superintendent Victoria Zelenak, followed by a tour of the classrooms, gym, library, locker rooms, etc. “Just having the chance to walk through the door before school starts is a great help for kids and parents,” says Zelenak. Pack up those pencil boxes, children!

Every week our photographer Danielle O’Neal roams the streets of Cape May on a mission... to give away a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. But it’s not quite THAT easy – first, the lucky recipient has to answer three questions related to our issue theme, which this week is all about babies. This week’s winner is Sam Green, 44, a physician’s assistant from Shamong, New Jersey. We found Sam strolling the Washington Street Mall. Here are his answers to our piercing questions: When were you born? April 9, 1967 What bird is said to deliver babies to your doorstep? Stork. What does a cow say? Moo. Sam wins a $50 gift certificate to Big Wave Burritos for answering our questions. Congratulations and enjoy! PHOTOGRAPH BY Danielle o’neal

Cape May Cooks
A culinary column by Knickerbocker and the Southern Belle
T
his week your Cape May culinary guides are inviting you to step out of your seafood cookery comfort zone. Flounder, grouper, salmon and swordfish are all wonderful to prepare and eat – no mistaking – but you may be ignoring some selections in the fish market display case that you’d really enjoy. And most of them are less expensive than the aforementioned four. Don’t be scared – give these a try! Okay – you CAN be scared by this first one, but only by its otherworldly outward appearance. Monkfish is one of the strangest-looking dudes of the deep. It’s basically a large and wide mouth full of teeth, with a tail. Also known as angler fish, it’s a bottom feeder and is frequently caught by the scallop trawlers. Your fish market will take care of separating the delicious tail fillets from the rest of its weird body, so not to worry. Another name for monkfish is “poor man’s lobster,” so perhaps that will convince you that it’s worth eating. Let’s start with a simple preparation. Monkfish Kabobs 40 minutes serves 4 1 lb monkfish tail fillets 2 zucchini (or yellow squash) 1 lemon 12 cherry tomatoes 3 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp lemon juice 1 tsp chopped fresh thyme (or ½ tsp dried) ½ tsp lemon pepper salt to taste Cut the monkfish into 2-inch chunks. Cut the squash into ½-inch thick slices, and the lemon into 8 wedges. Thread the monkfish, squash,
lemon wedges and tomatoes alternately onto 4 skewers. In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil and remaining ingredients. Brush this mixture liberally over all sides of the skewers. Place the skewers on the grill over medium heat and cook about 15 minutes, or until the fish is cooked through, turning once. Baste the skewers with the lemon sauce frequently. Fish Pie 50 minutes serves 3-4 No offense intended here, but the English have not always been known for their culinary finesse. And even when their dishes are truly delicious, they may sound odd. Such is the case with fish pie. It comes in many versions, but we like this one. 1 lb cod (or haddock) 2 tbsp butter 2 tbsp f lour 1 ½ c milk 2 tsp salt 2 c cooked peas ¼ c grated onion 4 tbsp green pepper, chopped 4 c cooked and seasoned mashed potatoes (mash them with 2-3 tbsp butter and about a cup of milk)* paprika Steam or cook the fish in water until it f lakes (about 7-8 minutes); cut into bite-size chunks. While fish is cooking, prepare a white sauce with the butter, f lour, milk and 1 tsp salt. When the sauce has thickened (add more milk if it gets too thick), stir in the cooked peas, onion, green pepper and remaining salt. Place the cooked fish in a greased casserole dish and

1 ½ lbs haddock fillets, cut into portion sizes 1 egg, lightly beaten f lour (mixed with panko bread crumbs), seasoned with salt and pepper for dredging 2-3 tbsp canola oil 1 14-oz can tomatoes and green chiles 1 15-oz can pinto beans, drained and rinsed 4 pieces cooked and crumbled bacon ¼ c fresh cilantro, chopped Heat the oil in a large frying pan. Dip the fish fillets into the egg, then coat with the f lour mixture; cook for 3-4 minutes on a side, or until fish f lakes easily. Meanwhile, in a medium saucepan heat the tomatoes and green chiles and
pinto beans over medium heat until hot. Just before serving, mix in the bacon and cilantro. Top each piece of fish with the salsa and enjoy! Red, White and Bluefish (or Mackerel) 45 minutes serves 6 Even if you think mackerel and bluefish are too strong for your palate, try this colorful Mediterranean-style dish. The acidic tomatoes and lemon peel balance the f lavor of the oily fillets. Pass the foil packets around on a platter and serve with corn and potatoes (sliced thin, rubbed with olive oil and kosher salt, and grilled until brown with marks on both sides). 2 lbs bluefish fillet, cut into 6 portions 3 ripe Jersey tomatoes, chopped kosher salt fresh ground black pepper 8 oz large white mushrooms, sliced 6 sprigs fresh rosemary 6 sprigs fresh thyme 1 jalapeño pepper, seeded and chopped olive oil balsamic vinegar 6 wide strips lemon peel Cut six pieces of aluminum foil big enough to make packets with the fish, about 10-12 inches long. To assemble, put a fillet in the center of each piece. Top with tomatoes and sprinkle with salt and freshly ground pepper. Lay the mushrooms on top of the tomatoes and add the sprigs of rosemary and thyme and some jalapeño pepper. Drizzle with olive oil and balsamic vinegar and top with a strip of lemon peel. Fold the foil into tightly sealed packets. Grill on medium heat 15-20 minutes, until the fish f lakes and the vegetables are soft. Pass the packets for each guest to open individually, being careful of the steam. Serve spoons or crusty bread to mop up the delicious juices.

Customer Service
I
The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone
’ve written before about how much I avoid waiting on people I know. For friends, I feel compelled to offer a discount I’m not authorized to give, so I’ll end up paying for a cocktail or two out of my own pocket. And my friends feel compelled to leave an absurd amount of tip money. A buddy of mine is a bartender at a local bar. When he comes to my restaurant, he’ll drop a three-digit gratuity on every check. Then, when I go to his bar, I feel guilty if I’m not returning the favor. We’ve been swapping the same hundred dollar bill for a year. It’s ridiculous. Serving acquaintances can be equally awkward. I’d rather not wait on the pharmacist who knows about that bladder control problem I have while jogging. And I’d rather not wait on the man who dumped a dear friend of mine after six months of dating because – surprise – he’s married. I’m too tempted to dump a steaming bowl of corn chowder in his lap. But by far, the worst experience is waiting on the guy who’s recently seen you naked. I’d opt for my pharmacist over him
any day. But, according to Durphy’s Law (the Murphy’s Law of the dining room), when the guy who’s seen you naked makes a reservation, he will inevitably end up in your section of the restaurant. A couple of weeks ago a Cape May man who’d recently seen me in my birthday suit came to eat with a bunch of friends. I wanted to take their order and run away as fast as possible, so I asked what I could get for him, and then I watched him snicker as he remembered some of the off-menu possibilities. In the light of the dining room, he looked a lot less funny and a lot less cute than he had after two shots of black pepper vodka.
What is said (and what it really meant) between a waitress and a man who’s seen her naked usually goes something like this: “Can I start you off with something to drink? (I hate that you’ve seen my breasts.)” “I’d love a beer. (I’m smiling because I’ve seen your breasts.)” “We have a few special additions tonight. (Do not expect anything special tonight.)” “That sirloin sounds delicious. (She wants me bad.)” Then, of course, there is the tipping thing. At the end of the meal, if he leaves way too much, I feel like a hooker. If he leaves too little, I feel like a cheap hooker. This is silly of course, because I know the money is for my service and nothing else; I just hope he knows which service. But what can I do? I can’t refuse to wait on this guy, and I can’t refuse his money. So I take it, and then I leave it for my overpaid bartender friend when I stop in after work for a drink. Any drink – except, perhaps, for black pepper vodka.

Funny Onesies From Just For Laughs
Baby Books From Atlantic Books
Jellycat Stuffed Toys From Happy Baby
As if babies aren’t amusing enough all by themselves, put your favorite one in a wise-guy onesie by Kid Popular from Just For Laughs and see how many chuckles you get. “My Mom Is A Hottie” is our personal favorite, but there are tons of colors and amusing sayings to choose from – plus they’re a steal at $10. 504 Washington Street, 609-884-5466, www.justforlaughscm.com.
Okay, first thing’s first before you go and get into the baby business. Visit Atlantic Books for all your baby information, from the popular What To Expect book series by Heidi Murkoff, to baby board books for infants, and even for Melissa & Doug wooden blocks to sufficiently occupy those busy little prereading hands. Washington Street, 609-8989694, www.atlanticbooks.com.
There’s no sense having a dressed-up baby if she’s having a tantrum. Soothe frazzled infant nerves with these darling, absurdly soft toys. (We’re told they work on grownups as well, but haven’t yet tested this in our EZ lab.) Made in London and wildly popular since the company started in 1999, you only need to pick one up to see why. 106 Jackson Street or West End Garage, 609-884-5922.

The Answer Lady
T
Wise answers to perplexing questions
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I recently got into a shouting match with another driver who apparently thought I wasn’t going fast enough on Beach Drive. He actually pulled up next to me after I finally found a spot and started screaming. Here’s the kicker – my wife was even angrier, and says I should have punched him in the nose! Our baby was in the car, and she was livid that he was tailgating and that I didn’t put him in his place. Did I underreact, if there is such a thing? – Not A Jerk Dear Not My goodness, everyone has a serious case of the Augusts here, haven’t they? Acting like a jerk because someone else acts like a jerk does not cancel out the other person’s jerkiness, and escalating the situation is the only thing you would have accomplished by following your wife’s directive. Surely your
wife doesn’t think this is proper behavior to exhibit in front of your child? The Answer Lady understands the road rage impulses that arrive when a small town suddenly swells with rubber-necking visitors who often leave their driving skills behind a few exits up the parkway. (Indeed, once upon a time, before the Answer Lady was elderly and sedate as she is now, a police officer called her a “menace” as he proffered her speeding ticket.) Baby in the car is more of a reason to keep one’s cool, not more of a rea-
son to lose it – kudos to you for holding onto yours. PS: Your wife needs a vacation, dear. Dear Answer Lady My boyfriend and I have been together for two years and are talking marriage. I can totally picture spending the rest of my life with him, but we disagree about children – he wants them, I don’t. I don’t have anything against kids, I’ve just never wanted to be a parent. What are the odds that one of us will change our minds? – Engaged? Dear Maybe Not There are about a million mitigating factors, but the short answer is “slim to none.” You don’t indicate your age, but certainly if you’re very young, there is plenty of time for either one of you to change your mind. The decision whether to have children is a HUGE one, because the results are so completely and utterly life-changing in ways one can’t begin to imagine. This is not a ‘what color should we paint the kitchen?’ situation. Don’t marry with the understanding that one of you might change your mind. It could be a long wait.

Making Musicians Meet
H
Arts Editor Tom Sims profiles Mike Murphy, host of WCFA’s “Six Degrees”
ow do you get from Tiny Tim to Clint Eastwood in six degrees of separation? There’s only one way: through music. And there is only one show that can be so bold as to connect those dots: WCFA-101.5 FM’s “Six Degrees with Mike Murphy” – available only in Cape May. In his show, Murphy regularly chooses songs around a single theme like escape, money, rain or death. A couple of dozen times since the show started in October 2007, he’s tried to link two unlikely figures through music, similar to the game that features Kevin Bacon. “It started when I was looking at a Miles Davis album while a song was on the air,” Mike recounts. “Nearby there was a Steely Dan album. On the back of both albums was the same name: Victor Feldman, a studio jazz musician. That led me to think there must be connections between artists in ways we don’t always think about.” True, but really how much of a stretch is Miles Davis to Steely Dan? A friend of
Mike Murphy hosts “Six Degrees,” a show where he finds the links between unlikely artists Mike’s was thinking the same thing. He challenged Mike to get from Tiny Tim to Clint Eastwood. “So I did,” says Mike; from Tiny Tim to Jimmy Rushing, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Brown and through to Clint. “The weirdest challenge was Rudy
Vallee to Carly Simon,” says Mike. “That passed through The Village People, Captain Beef heart and Jean-Luc Ponty – strange pathway, but it worked.” Mike says that his challenges rely on a lifelong love of music, a lot of research, and some lucky finds. “A favorite show was taking Bill Frisell’s disc Good Dog, Happy Man and following the work of all the players on the album.” So what’s in it for Mike? Probably not the impressive salary (it is a volunteer radio station, after all). “I put the musicians on a long sheet of paper — opposites sides,” he explains, “and I begin to fill in the gaps. Along the way, I discover music, sometimes musicians, I’ve never heard of. So bringing that discovery to others I hope will open up an appreciation of music for the listener.” “Six Degrees” was voted most popular show on WCFA in a recent survey, and it can be heard Saturday mornings from 9am to noon on WCFA-101.5 FM. Got an idea for Mike? Email him at mike@sixdegrees.fm or visit his blog: sixdegrees-mqm.blogspot. com.

alance. It’s one quality that we all seek – balance between work and play, between activity and rest, between good stressors and negative ones. But did you know that balance can be found as nearby as Park Boulevard in West Cape May? Balance Yoga and Pilates, that is, the island’s only fully equipped Pilates studio. Savvy visitors and locals have discovered this peaceful way to get into shape and manage stress. Owner and instructor Judy Heany established her yoga business in 2006, and has been at the current location since 2008. “We were on the Washington Street Mall prior to that,” she says. “Although the mall is good as far as visibility and foot traffic, the parking was iffy and the energy there was kind of frenetic. Here, we have plenty of parking, and the studio is so peaceful – it’s almost like a cocoon in here.” We have to concur on that point – to say the studio is serene is an understatement. In addition to their popular Yoga On The Beach classes, Balance has expanded to a second studio space location for the 2011 season at 305 Beach Avenue, combining an indoor practice space with a convenient locale, and with ocean views as an added bonus. “We’ll be there through the
end of the year,” Heany tells us. “As excited as we are about having a beachfront location for the season, one of the things I like to emphasize is that we are a year-round business. People ask me all the time if you have to commit to a minimum number of classes in order to practice here, and that’s not the case. Anyone is welcome to drop in for a class, provided it matches their skill level. We’re offering teaching classes for those who might want to become yoga teachers themselves. We’re also planning a retreat to Poppy Farmhouse in Piedmont, Italy for October 2012. It’s an amazing trip.” For such a quiet place, it sounds like a beehive of activity. “I want this to be more than a yoga studio where people come to get into shape and get a massage,” Heany says. “I want Balance to be a community place, where people connect and friendships are made. So much social interaction in a resort town is built around the bar scene, which is great, but it’s not for everyone, and not everyone is comfortable with it. I want people to be comfortable coming here.” For more information on Balance, visit their studios at 600 Park Boulevard in West Cape May, or 305 Beach Avenue. Call 609-884-3001, or visit balancecapemay.com.

Chance Meetings

I
’ve always been proud of my musical knowledge. An appreciation of the classics, a finger on the pulse of what’s new, unafraid to turn off a talentless hack, ready with a song for any occasion. Lately I’ve been contemplating breakup songs. Women tend to douse their breakups in “girl power” songs (“I Will Survive,” etc.) or pick a particular song with meaning to the just-ended relationship (my generation remembers Brenda Walsh playing “Losing My Religion” endlessly after Dylan dumped her on 90210). Guys tend to pump up the volume, saturating the pain in guitar riffs and throbbing bass. But there’s another way. There’s humor, biting sarcasm, and just laughing it off, musically speaking. So as a public service, for those of you about to put an end to your summer romances, I offer up this playlist. Steve Martin’s banjo-flavored “Jubilation Day” is a remembrance of a woman he’s glad to have escaped. “Let’s always remember the good times/Like when you were out of town/But the sex was great/At least that’s what my best friend’s brother told me/You
know you’re right we should always stay in touch/This is your new e-mail address right?/Cheatingpsychodishthrowingho. nut?” That’s comic emotion rarely heard in bluegrass. The Bad Examples’ pop-tinged “It’s Over Now” is an acerbic blast at an ex. “I’d like to remember you the way you looked the day we met/But as I’m walking out the door I’m starting to forget/I’ll always love you until someone else gets my attention/
It’s over now, it’s over now, it’s over now.” Every nasty thing you wish you’d said during a breakup is in this song. William Shatner teams with Ben Folds for some memorable songs, including the spoken word slow jam “In Love.” “At puberty I was sworn to secrecy/By the international brotherhood of lying fickle males/I can’t tell you anything and/I can’t commit/You’re right/I can’t commit...to you!” Nobody croons about the death of love quite like Bill. But my favorite is Ben Folds’ timeless classic, “Give Me My Money Back, You Bitch.” Every guy knows this one. “I wish I hadn’t/Bought you dinner/Right before you/Dumped me on your front porch.” He demands not only his money back, but the return of his favorite black T-shirt. Want to discuss music over a meal? Send an email to info@exitzero.us, I’ll be in touch, and we’ll go to dinner at one of the Cape’s fine restaurants. Afterwards I’ll write all about it, a combined date and restaurant review. Your name will be changed, the restaurant’s won’t. If we hit it off, we can sync our iPods.

The Old Fogey
N
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
ow then, what was my highly amusing baby joke, again...? Ah, yes: “I LOVE babies, but I can only eat one.” No, hold on, “I can’t eat a baby,” no that’s not it… I shall go ask Kitchener, my faithful manservant, as he is under strict orders to record every funny utterance I make and all of the hilarious anecdotes I tell. How he manages to keep a straight face, I will never know. Anyway, I do recall the time Cape May was entirely occupied by babies. The wheeze had been the idea of my old pal Ernie Hemingway, one night in the Brown Room, where over a fine malt or ten, we were discussing how babies have it easy, and how much we missed those days. So, Ernie and I decided that we would all regress to become babies, and do exactly what we pleased all of the time. In fact, Ernie did pretty much this anyway, but was convinced that he was restricted by a repressive society. So, we employed a small army of nannies and nurses and such like, and one Monday morning, shed all of our adult
affectations, and clothes, and concealed weapons, and embarked upon our juvenile adventure. I remember that first day like it was yesterday: I strode out in a cozy blue onesie with matching bonnet embroidered with a jaunty rabbit, towing a stuffed dog on wheels behind me. I saw Ernie coming the opposite way, peeking out of a huge perambulator that was being propelled by two rather burly nurses. He shook a rattle at me as we passed, and grunted a rough “Goo-goo.”
Well, that first week was a delight – we (and some 300 other volunteers) had only to weep and shriek to summon a gentle nanny, who would spoon mashed banana into our mouths and then change our diapers. I tell you – until you have had someone take all of the effort and mess out of the process of passing waste, you have not known luxury. There were naps, storybooks, and we played all day. It was sheer heaven. But then it all went sour: Ernie was not too happy having to wait his turn for the wet nurse, and so struck Harry Masters on the head with his rattle, then took a colossal tantrum and smeared poop in his very own hair. And a full-scale brawl erupted over Neddy the rocking horse when Amy Petiglio refused to wait her turn. I rose above it all, of course, but slipped on some pee and accidentally upended my lunch plate, earning a totally unfair time out on the naughty step. Well, I was not the sort of baby to be pushed around, and by the time order was restored, our mammas had been called and that was the end of that particular experiment.

A newborn’s mother and father usually select these two people to help with the child’s upbringing and to care for the child in case he or she is orphaned. 15 . Now we say stroller, but in the past (especially in England) they used this word. 16 . In 2010, this was the most popular name for baby girls – you can thank author Stephenie Meyer for that. 17 . This is what you would call a baby whale, or a part of your leg. 20 . In 2010, this was the most popular name for baby boys, another ripple effect from the Twilight series.

Activity Of The Week
I
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Elaine’s Dinner Theater
t was a dark and stormy night. A thunderstorm drowned the kids’ plans for a boardwalk trip – their traditional “first night of vacation” activity. Luckily, their resourceful mother had an idea: Elaine’s Dinner Theater. As soon as reservations were made, the clouds, both real and metaphorical, disappeared. Krista, 11, and Nick, 13, consider themselves regulars at Elaine’s, having been there once a summer “since we were little.” They love many things about Cape May – the beach, surrey bikes, dolphins – but no trip is complete without an Elaine’s visit. Upon arrival at the restored Victorian mansion, they greet familiar actors and note what’s changed (“She wasn’t pregnant last year!”) and what hasn’t (“That actor does the funny voices.”) They remark on the fate of the mannequin who once graced the front porch, speculating that the villain from a long-ago production, Le Comte de Satan, kidnapped her for nefarious purposes. Sipping sodas, they offer tips for enjoying the show. “Don’t worry, it’s more funny than scary.” “Don’t get up to go to the bathroom if you don’t want them to tease
you.” “Get the mozzarella sticks!” Armed with these tips, we saw Secret Agent Stan, a send-up of James Bond movies, complete with politically incorrect references, some singing, including a little Justin Bieber, some danger, and some cat humor for good measure. The next show, Gone With The Werewolves, promises similar campy
fun. The quick-witted actors are good sports about performing over the clink of coffee cups, and make the audience feel included in the silliness. Clearly, this is not the place for people who take themselves too seriously. Elaine’s Dinner Theater is located at 513 Lafayette Street. The menu offers something for everyone – seafood is a specialty – and includes soup or salad, dessert and coffee. A children’s menu is available. You can order appetizers and cocktails for an additional charge. Tickets are $44.95 for adults, $34.95 for teens, and $24.95 for children. Make reservations at 609-884-4358. Seating is at 7:30pm, with free parking behind the theater. In addition to the theater, Elaine’s also features the Haunted Mansion Restaurant, serves as a departure point for walking ghost tours, and houses a cozy bed and breakfast. Special events, like murder mystery weekends, are featured throughout the year. For the holidays, the theater will present Scrooge, the Musical. Don’t wait for a dark and stormy night to make your reservations at Elaine’s Dinner Theater! Next week: Sailing the A.J. Meerwald

Name: Cody Felice Occupation: Server, Gecko’s Age: I’m 18. Hometown: I was born and raised in North Cape May. How long have you worked here? I’ve been here two years. Best thing about the job? I like being able to work outside in the beautiful weather, and also there’s just a nice, laid-back vibe here. What do you recommend here? Everything is good here, but I especially recommend the mesquite grilled salmon – it is really excellent. What’s your OTHER dream job? I’d like to flip houses – buy old houses, fix them up and sell them, like that guy on the TV show, Flipping Out. Favorite thing about Cape May? The beach, of course! What else? Daisy is a sweet seven-year-old Beagle. Since being here she has shown that she is a very obedient, calm and tolerant pet. She can be a little timid but once she warms up she’s great. She takes her time with everything and likes to lounge around. Of course that could be from living at the shelter. All that’s missing in her life is a home. If Daisy seems like a match, stop by and meet her today! Adoption fee is $35.

Tonka is a 12-year-old Mastiff with a golden coat and an adorable face. His owners could no longer care for him, so they brought him here. He’s a big guy and his age makes him very manageable. He needs a loving guardian who will care for him and enjoy his company during his golden years. If you’re interested in a mature, loving canine, stop by and meet Tonka – you’ll be so glad you did. Adoption fee is $8.

BONO is a fun-loving, one-year-old Chow mix with a lot of zest for life. He’s enthusiastic, playful and will make an excellent companion for whoever adopts him. He’s still young and will need some training, and he belongs in a home with older children as he has the potential to knock over younger kids. If you think Bono could fit with your lifestyle, stop by the shelter and meet him today. He’ll be grateful you did. Adoption fee is $95.

Albert is a lovely domestic short hair cat with just a touch of white on his chest. He loves it when you pet him, and he’s a very skilled and agile mouser. He can be a bit grabby, so it’s better he not go to a home with small children. All he needs is someone to offer him a forever home. Are you that someone? Adoption fee is $35.

Jade was abandoned at the county airport and brought here to the shelter with her sister Oreo. She has an extra toe on each foot, which means she’s polydactyl – just like Hemingway’s cats! She’s quiet but loves affection. Stop by the shelter to see if Jade might be the right cat for you. Adoption fee is $20.
Head to toe summer beauty....

Shirley is a young gal with lots of moxie. She’s playful, has lots of spunk, and is lots of fun to be around. She can be independent at times so we feel she would do best as the only pet. Bird Droppings
I
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
t happened again. Just the other day. A person showed up for the morning bird walk. Grabbed her binoculars and started for the eager gathering. Happily one of leaders stopped her before it was too late. “Going with us?” he asked. “Yes,” she confirmed. “Had those binoculars a while?” “Uh... well, yes, I guess so. I don’t use them much.” That much was evident. The film of dust was a dead giveaway. But even more convincing was the image through the barrels. It was, in a word, HORRIBLE. Not only were the things horribly out of alignment, but the amber-coated lenses turned the world a ghastly green. They weren’t the worst binoculars that have ever turned up on a bird walk, but they were contenders. “Let’s set you up with a pair of binoculars that will make this easy for you,” the leader said – and did. Bird watching is challenging enough without binoculars
that undermine your ambition. And, happily, a limited number of loaner binoculars are available for field trip participants. But every time I witness an incident like this I have to wonder. What if this person showed up on a field trip and nobody was attentive enough to see that her binoculars were going to frustrate her? How many people
all over the world go on a field trip… Have binoculars that stink… Walk away being frustrated (because they couldn’t see anything)… And... and... They might undergo all this disappointment, not realizing that the problem was the binocular, not them – and not the field trip leader, either. I’m willing to bet that millions of incipient birders have been discouraged on their first field trip out because their binoculars were just this side of junk. The next Roger Tory Peterson or John James Audubon might have died on the vine because of mechanical failure. What a crime against nature. Not to mention a waste of $10 bucks (the cost of a bird walk). So listen up, you frustrated onceupon-a-field-trip-birder-who-never-was. Give it another chance. Millions of people watch birds and they have the same basic equipment you do. Two eyes; two ears; two hands.

Bird Droppings ? From Page 121
If your optics look like this, it's time to upgrade and want to put them to good use, join Pete Dunne any Monday morning at 7:30am for a two-hour walk that meets in the parking lot at The Nature Conservancy on Sunset Boulevard. Or stop by the Cape May Bird Observatory and ask any of the staff or volunteers what walks are happening throughout the week. You’ll see why the Cape May Bird Observatory is THE place to come for all your nature needs – and not to be missed. The CMBO located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in
TUNE IN.
Give it another chance, but this time do it with binoculars that don’t split the world in two, or turn it the color of a Scotch pine, or scramble your inner ear when you look through them, or give you blisters because the focus wheel is so stiff. If you don’t know where to go to see good glass, stop by the Cape May Bird Observatory – one of the planet’s most optic-rich corners. There are people who drive hundreds of miles just to see the instruments that the CMBO has in stock. Most dealers carry one or two lines. The CMBO carries all the major lines. And of course, they help you make that determination. Since most of our staff are also birders, they know what you need to look for in a good glass. And since they are part of New Jersey Audubon, their ambition is to help you to enjoy birds, not just sell you something. The folks at the CMBO want you to find a binocular that is great for you. Then you get jazzed about nature. So there you are. If you’ve never gone on a bird walk, be sure to go well armed. If you have gone on a bird walk and been frustrated, know that there is a remedy. If you’ve already got good binoculars

Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at the CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. The Dating Column
W
Stella Dixon's take on romance on Old Cape Island
ith all of the squabbling in Congress recently, I’ve been thinking a great deal about politics. I don’t know where I belong. Am I conservative or liberal? Am I a Democrat or a Republican? I don’t know. Recently, I’ve been trying to figure out which dating category I fall into as well. Am I a hopeless romantic, or a jaded pessimist? Once again, I don’t know. Recently, I watched Beauty and the Beast while babysitting a friend’s young daughter. A part of me (the hopeless romantic part) loves the fairytale notion that love conquers all. Another part of me (the jaded part) hates the Disney Corporation for teaching little girls that a man will stop being such a beast after locking you in your bedroom and sending you to bed without dinner, if you only love him enough. Stick it out, and your abusive honey will come around; that's the message? When my engaged girlfriends tell me they are sure their marriages will last forever, the hopeless romantic part of me believes them. The jaded part of me thinks that’s awfully naïve; people change, vows sometimes break,
and that’s life. The hopeless romantic part of me cries during The Notebook, while the jaded part is constantly there, reminding me that real life is not at all like the movies. Yesterday, I met a Cape May man in the ocean. We got to talking, and I learned that he’s a 28-year-old physics teacher who makes surfboards and coaches high school lacrosse. Now, I’m sitting by the phone, hoping he’ll call, but expecting him not to. I want to hear from him, but I feel like it’s probably better that I
don’t. I know it will end in disaster, or else he’s my soul mate. I’m sure he’s a psycho; unless he’s the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me. He’s really into me, but he’s probably got hotter, smarter, funnier girls waiting for him. My constant flip-flopping between hopeless romantic and jaded pessimist is nearly as exhausting as watching Congress negotiate. But maybe it’s okay that I don’t fall into one category, after all. Just as in politics, the issues are so complex it's short-sighted to ignore the good in what the opposing side advocates. If you fall into only one category all the time and with every issue, then you are an extremist. The same goes for love. With both politics and romance, I think we’ve all got a little of each side in us, more than we like to admit it. But we pick a camp, and that’s what we stick with. I think that’s a dangerous thing. At this moment, I’m refusing to label myself, and I’m refusing to label my heart, too. Maybe that makes me wishywashy, but I think it makes me brave. No matter how jaded I may be, I’m not shutting off my phone just yet.

The Movie Column
H
Corbin Cogswell, Cape May Film Society Chair, previews the Liz Taylor Film Series
ow do you celebrate a Hollywood legend? With her friends, of course! For three Mondays starting on August 15, we'll all be Liz Taylor's closest friends as we celebrate her life on the big screen with some of Hollywood's greatest stars. Taylor, who was an Oscar-winning actress and clearly silver screen royalty, died this past March. In her honor, the Cape May Film Society has selected three of her greatest films, featuring such star power as Richard Burton, Spencer Tracy and a host of others. Come and see movies the way they were meant to be seen – with friends and neighbors. In this age of movies OnDemand, DVDs in your mailbox, even calling up a film on your laptop, it's easy to enjoy a good movie alone. But why not sit with a crowd? Laughter becomes more contagious. Suspense is more palatable. There's nothing quite like it. Evenings start with cocktails at 7pm in the Chalfonte Hotel’s King Edward Room, then the movie starts at 7:30pm in the Henry Sawyer Room. Here is the lineup we've got planned, all on Mondays. August 15: Father of the Bride, the 1950
Celebrate Liz Taylor with three Mondays of her films classic with Spencer Tracy (who was nominated for an Oscar for his performance). Liz was all of 18 years old, a few years had passed since her first major motion picture (for all intents and purposes her debut) in National Velvet (1944). It would be the first time we as an
Is paying the electric bill painful? It doesn’t have to be.
audience would see her as growing up. A very candid, very funny look at a father's emotional (and financial) turmoil in preparing for his daughter's wedding. August 22: BUtterfield 8, the 1960 film that won Liz her first of two Oscars. Now we see Liz as an adult. Part model, part call girl — and as one description of the film puts it, “all man trap.” The movie also stars Eddie Fisher, who had just broken up with his first wife Debbie Reynolds to marry Liz a year earlier. And you thought things were steamy on the screen. August 29: The 1966 classic Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Liz got her second Oscar for her performance with then husband Richard Burton (Fisher was out for at least a few months before she married Burton). Twisted and cynical, her character is both disturbing and compelling, as she rages on, “I'm loud and I'm vulgar, and I wear the pants in the house because somebody's got to, but I am not a monster. I'm not.” Join us for three Mondays where you can visit with friends — Liz and her friends! No reservations needed, email capemayfilm@ hotmail.com for details.

In the fall of 2001 I was told that I may never walk again. I am so grateful for the wonderful doctors and technology that have given me my life back. Others are not as fortunate. After my injury I researched different charities dedicated to spinal cord awareness. As an avid surfer, I was particularly interested in the Life Rolls On Foundation (www.liferollson.org). Life Rolls On (LRO) is a non-profit 501(c)3 Foundation that exists to be a grassroots resource and an advocate on behalf of young people who have sustained a spinal cord injury (SCI). Their tagline, “Instilling in people that life with SCI does indeed roll on.”

CAPE MAY

“A light heart lives the longest,” so the Irish say. A crowd of a 125 people travelled from all over the East Coast to the West Cape May Fire House on Saturday evening for a one of a kind Irish 'wake' to mark the 80th birthday of WCFA’s Harry Patterson. The Ancient Order of Hibernians led the guest of honor into the hall with a bagpipe fanfare. The party was given by his eight children, who told us, “Dad has always known how he wanted his wake to be thrown, and thought it a shame that he wouldn't be able to attend.” Thus, the idea for “a wake, while he is still awake” was born. In true Irish fashion, a fabulous time was had by all, and everyone chanted “10 more years, 10 more years,” as the festivities came to a close.

What is a land survey? There are 2 types of land survey that you may need if you are buying or selling a property. A residential boundary survey which identifies the borderline of the property from corner to corner. A mortgage survey is used by lenders, title companies and other parties in a transaction to determine if improvements to a property, such as driveways, sidewalks, garages, decks or swimming pools have encroached the recorded borderline to an adjoining property. Encroachment issues could delay a closing.
