The Police Blotter

Classic Quotations Cape May County Historical Museum
A Story From The Past “Computer games don’t affect kids. I mean if Pac-Man affected us as kids, we’d all be running around in darkened rooms, munching pills and listening to repetitive music.” Gareth Owen “Love is all fun and games until someone loses an eye or gets pregnant.” Jim Cole “It should be noted that the games of children are not games, and must be considered as their most serious actions.” Michel de Montaigne “Why do people in mutinies always ask for ‘better treatment’? I’d ask for a pinball machine, because with all that rocking back and forth you’d probably be able to get a lot of free games.” Jack Handy “God is a Skee-ball fanatic.” Dogma
“Distinctly a family place, maintaining the prestige of time and quite satisfied with its own company. Not pretentious; merely possessing good taste. The former glories of Cape May may never return. Perhaps the millions that are being spent to bring it up to date will never find a return on their investment. But there is a way in which Cape May will doubtless rise to greater glories than before, which will be through the new harbor the Government is dredging there.” The New York Times, July 28, 1912
Facebook Mystery Contest
Weird Word Of The Week
BAGATELLES – These machines were early penny arcades from the 19th century, and had elements of billiards and modern pinball. Once common at amusement parks and fairs, penny arcades were replaced in midways in the 1950s by games of chance and skill, like shooting galleries and Skee-ball.
KNOW your way around Cape May? Think of yourself as the observant type? Feast your eyes on the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Kate Chadwick. If you think you know what establishment you’re staring at, then you have a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter – follow the instructions carefully. And, don’t worry if you have never used Facebook before – it’s easy! Just ask your six-year-old nephew for help. To enter, look for the mystery photo at facebook.com/ exitzeropublishing. Good luck!
Random Fact Of The Week
When Skee-ball alleys were first sold in 1914 to the amusement park industry, the game had a 36-foot lane. It was too big for most arcades, and made it so that only those who were quite strong could play it well. As a result it was changed to 14 feet, and eventually to the modern length of 10-13 feet.
Fortune Cookie Of The Week J “Things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out.” J Once a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with a dynamite roll. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

A Tribute To Harry Hirsch
T
Ben Miller recounts the life of a Holocaust survivor, family man and pillar of our community
his past Saturday, the Cape May community lost one if its strongest supporters and most charismatic personalities, Harry Hirsch. Nearly five years ago, Harry’s doctors informed his family that the end was near, following a series of seizures and other medical complications. According to his son, Larry, all but one doctor gave Harry just a short time to live. The dissenting doctor must have known he was dealing with someone special. Harry was a strong man, a fighter in the metaphorical sense, someone who had the ability to persevere through even the toughest of conditions. “Four months later he was back living on his own. He visited us for Shabbat and down at the hotel [Montreal Inn],” remembers Larry. In the years since his recovery, Harry was able to share many more special times with his family and friends, including the 2010 dedication of Harry’s Ocean Bar & Grille in his honor. Those who knew of Harry’s past were not surprised by the inner strength he summoned to persevere for the past five years. Harry was born in 1923, the youngest of six children on a family farm in the Polish village of Kucowo. When he was 16 years old, German soldiers invaded Poland on Hitler’s orders. Harry and his brother Josef were convinced to board a train that they were told would take them to a better place filled with opportunities. When the train doors were finally opened, the boys found themselves standing in front of a sign that read, “Arbeit macht frei.” They knew as they passed under the gate into Auschwitz that they had been grossly deceived. Harry and Josef survived
Harry presides over a party at the Montreal Inn in the 1980s five years at the concentration camp until January of 1945, when German leadership gave the order to execute all prisoners. Russian troops were advancing and the German government wanted to hide evidence of what they had done in the camps. Many prisoners were saved by f leeing German soldiers who ignored the order, but Harry and Josef were not so lucky. The two brothers were lined up against a wall with their bunkmates. German soldiers opened fire with machine guns, continuing to shoot until the entire group was cut down. Miraculously, Harry and Josef were not hit by the barrage of bullets, though they remained silently hidden underneath the other bodies until they were sure the soldiers had left. They eventually dug their way out and escaped the camp. They later learned
their three other brothers and their sister had been killed by German soldiers. Harry met his wife, Sophie, at a German deportation camp the following year and in 1951, the two moved to America in search of a better life. Their son, Larry, was born the next year and eight years later, Joe was born. Though Harry Hirsch passed away Saturday, he did it on his own terms, surrounded by family at the end of a long and fulfilling life. Harry’s legacy can be seen in his many business interests in the Cape May area, his history of community involvement and in the family that now mourns his passing: his children, Larry and Joe Hirsch, their spouses, Amy and Miriam Hirsch, and his grandchildren, Jonathan, Evan, Sophie and

Page 14 A Tribute To Harry Hirsch ? From Page 13 Abbie Hirsch. “Harry wanted me to say I was his daughter, not daughter-in-law,” recalls Miriam. “He was so dear to me. I will miss him immensely. He was such a special man.” Evan recalled the same sentiment as he sat down to write about his grandfather for the funeral service: “His presence loomed large in our family, as will his spirit. I am profoundly grateful for the time we spent together, and for the legacy he leaves to me and to my family.” Harry has been a fixture in Cape May since 1963, when an Avalon Supermarket butcher named Sid Hess gave him a business tip. Harry already owned a chicken and egg wholesale business in Wildwood and Sid thought he might be interested in another venture. He told Harry about a bar that had been built on the beachfront in Cape May by a Quaker, whose family was not pleased about the notion of a Quaker-owned bar. The family was forcing the pious gentleman to sell and after a little negotiation, Harry and Sid decided to go into business together. They purchased the bar with the agreement that Harry would financially back
Thursday, August 25, 2011 the venture and Sid would run it, though neither told Harry’s wife, Sophie until after the sale. Sophie was slightly more pleased about the bar than the Quaker man’s family, but Harry and Sid made it up to her the following year. Sid learned of a plan by the City of Cape May to auction lots on the eastern side of the island and shared it with Harry. After talking it over this time, Sophie went to the auction and purchased the land herself. Construction on the Montreal Inn began less than a year later. It was a busy time in the Hirsch household – Sophie oversaw the hotel with Joe by her side and Harry continued working at his wholesale business with Larry. Things continued at that frenetic pace until 1975, when Harry’s beloved wife, Sophie, passed away. Harry had sold his interests in the bar (now Carney’s) to Sid the year before and he decided to move to Cape May full-time to focus his attention on the hotel. “When Larry and I moved here in 1979, he [Harry] worked like a dog. My kids became his extra-curricular activities,” recounts Miriam. “I would not trade the time they had with him for anything.” In the years since, the Montreal Inn has

continued to grow and evolve, while Harry expanded his reach into other Cape May businesses. He was instrumental in developing several Washington Street Mall buildings, including the City Centre Mall he constructed in 1985. In the early 1990s, Harry oversaw the demolition of Steger’s former beach shop and the subsequent redevelopment of the land into shops and restaurants. Following his retirement from the hotel, Harry had the pleasure of watching both his sons and his grandson, Jonathan, get involved in the family business. Knowing his children had chosen to follow in his footsteps made him happy, but seeing his grandson continue the legacy was particularly special to him, notes Larry. “I think it made him proud, very happy to see Jonathan involved.” “My father was a simple, unassuming person, “ remembers Larry, who fondly tells stories of Harry walking the Washington Street Mall to catch up with old friends. “He would walk around town, talk with the locals and share stories. My father loved Cape May. He loved it. He frequently said, ‘The air in Cape May is the freshest air anywhere.’” Jonathan recalls the same spirit, “He told me coming to Cape May rejuvenated him. All he had to do was breathe in the salt air and he knew he was home.”

Every week our photographer Danielle O’Neal roams the streets of Cape May on a mission... to give away a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. But it’s not quite THAT easy – first, the lucky recipient has to answer three questions related to our issue theme, which this week is all about Skee-ball. This week’s winner is Lori Rodriguez, 39, a social worker from New York City. We found Lori strolling the Washington Street Mall. Here are her answers to our piercing questions: Have you ever played Skee-ball? Yes. Have you ever gotten it into a 100 slot? Yes. Do you remember when Skee-ball only cost a dime? No. Christina wins a $50 gift certificate to Jackson Street Boutique for answering our questions. Congratulations and enjoy! PHOTOGRAPH BY Danielle o’neal

A Tribute To Gene Sole
Friends, family and colleagues honor one of Cape May’s finest. Compiled by Kate Chadwick and Diane Stopyra.
L
ieutenent Colonel Eugene Sole, better known to friends and family as “Sole Man,” passed away at age 48 on August 11 after a courageous three-year battle with cancer. Gene, a devoted family man, lived in Cape May with his loving wife of nearly 20 years, Sarah “Betsy” (née Craig) Sole, and his two sons, Jackson and Tyler, where he taught his boys the importance of rising to every occasion, even the difficult ones. Gene’s family, including father-in-law Toby Craig and brotherin-law David Craig, are proud to have loved and learned from a man of such great honor. Toby Craig: Every father wants his daughter to marry the perfect guy, and that usually never happens. But it happened for Betsy. Even if you met Gene only once, you learned something from him, something about life, and that is important. That is one of his legacies. Jackson Sole: The fact that he was a great man goes without saying – the amount of people who showed up for his services was evidence of that. He had a positive impact on just so many lives, and that will go on. Tyler Sole: My father taught me so many important things, from riding a bike to looking someone in the eye when you shake their hand. I’ve always wanted to be like him, and when people have told me over the past week or so, “You remind me of your dad,” or “You look like your dad,” that’s been a huge comfort to me; it’s given me courage. It’s the nicest thing anyone can say to me. As much as I want to be like him, he taught me to be my own man. David Craig: Gene was honest, humble and genuine. I’m so grateful my sister brought him into our lives. In his short 48 years, he did what it would take most people an entire lifetime to accomplish. One of Gene’s many accomplishments was his success as an educator. As a soccer coach and teacher in the Lower Township district, vice-principal of Lower Cape May Regional High School, and, most recently, principal of the Richard M. Teitelman Middle School, Gene earned the respect of his colleagues, including John Miller, David Smith, Shelley Vogelei, Dan Cappelletti and Jim Wadlow. John Miller: I hope people look at me someday the way they looked at him. He was a man’s man, but sweet and compassionate at the same time. He constantly sacrificed his personal life for others. If you knew anything about him, you were in awe. David Smith: He was my assistant soccer coach, which is just so funny, because I was the one learning from him. Once we
In April 2006, Gene Sole was greeted by overjoyed crowds on his return from his tour of duty in Iraq had a kid who decided, after three years on the team, that he no longer wanted to play. I admit, I’d given up on him, but Gene wouldn’t. He suggested we drive to his house, where Gene talked to him. Gene convinced this kid to play, and I know he was so happy. If not for Gene, he would have regretted giving up for the rest of his life. Shelley Vogelei: Gene went into everything he did with his heart, with passion, and with everyone’s best interests in mind. He didn’t have to rule with an iron fist, he ruled with his heart. I can’t tell you how many troubled kids Gene was there for – he inspired them and made them want to be better. One of my sweetest memories is from our Christmas show, when Gene would get on stage in front of 800 kids and sing. He was the Sole Man, and let me be one of his Sole Girls, singing and dancing with him. You knew how much the kids loved it because afterward, they were hanging out the bus windows, waving to us. When Gene announced his retirement, we had shirts made that read, “Gene Sole: The Heart and Soul of Richard Teitelman Middle School.” Jim Wadlow: Twenty years from now, people will still be talking about Gene; he was that kind of guy. When kids were up to mischief, he handled it in a cool, calm manner. He disciplined in such a way that kids sought his guidance. Gene was a father figure to those kids, and he always made you
feel like you were the only one in the room. Dan Caeppelletti: One of Gene’s favorite sayings was, “You make a living by what you get; you make a life by what you give,” and he gave so much. He helped me run a weight lifting class at 6:30am for about 30 kids. No one worked harder than Gene – a man’s man, but a gentle soul. I lost my brother at a young age, and Gene consoled me. He treated all his students like they were his kids. Even when he had to discipline them, they left his office thanking him. Tyler Sole: I’ve had so many people tell me over the years, “Your dad suspended me,” or “Your dad gave me my first detention,” but I saw those people at his memorial service, and that says a lot. Don Montgomery, Jerry Griffin, Bucky Toler, and Meg Turner were just four of the students who turned to Gene for guidance. Don Montgomery: I skipped class once, and Mr Sole caught me. I thought I could outrun him, and I was wrong; he was so fast, and he actually ran after me. He wanted the best for his students; he was always looking out for them. Jerry Griffin: I was a student athlete, and he was always in the stands, cheering us on. It was comforting to see an administrator there. I feel lucky to know his two amazing sons, who are carrying on his legacy.

A Tribute To Gene Sole ? From Page 35 Bucky Toler: My senior year, I got in some trouble outside of school, and Mr Sole found out. He called me to his office, and said, “I don’t care that this isn’t schoolrelated.” He taught me that my todays affect my tomorrows. He taught me to think things through. Even after I graduated, he always shook my hand whenever we saw one another. He made that school better just by being there. Meg Turner: Mr Sole taught me to never stop believing in myself, and to be strong at my weakest moments. Even after the school day ended, Gene devoted his time to the young people of the Cape May community. In April of 2004, he resurrected a defunct Cub Scout troop, Troop 73. As Scoutmaster, Gene led his patrol in hiking, canoeing and skiing trips, as well as the annual Fourth of July parade. A record 13 boys earned Eagle Scout status under Gene’s seven-year leadership, including 17-year-old Billy Kelly. The Troop 73 Committee Chair, David Von Savage, as well as Gene’s assistant Scoutmasters, Don Schifferdecker and Rob Elwell, Jr., were continually impressed with Gene’s ability to lead. Don Schifferdecker: He taught us all. He never gave up. He prepared his boys for manhood. Once, while mountain biking in North Jersey, my bike chain broke. Gene
“He taught me that my todays affect my tomorrows. He made that school better just by being there.” gave me his, and then he ran with my bike for five miles. That’s the kind of guy he was, a giver. Rob Elwell: In 2008, we took eight boys from our troop on a ten-day hike in New Mexico. On the second day, someone checked the map and realized we’d gone off course. We’d been headed the wrong way for an hour, and we had 70-pound packs on our backs. It was very discouraging for the kids, but Gene said, “Look, we’re in this together.” He knew the boys and how to work with them. He never left anyone – or anything – behind. Once, after a half-day hike up a mountain, it started thundering and hailing. One of the guys had a metal backpack, so Gene carried it for him. Even lightning was no match for Gene. David Von Savage.: I am confident that the scouts, students, and all the individuals from this community who have had the privilege of being influenced by Gene’s leadership will go on to live better lives because of him. Leader Gene lived his life totally committed to what matters most: faith, family and country, and he did it with grit
and wit. Billy Kelly: I’m not from West Cape May, so I didn’t know anyone when I joined the troop. Mr Sole and his sons accepted me with open arms and made me feel so welcome. They acted like we’d known each other for years. When I was twelve, I went to my first summer camp. There was a mile swim in the pool that I was wary of participating in because no one I knew was doing it. Mr Sole stepped up, and we did it together. I struggled, and he pushed me the whole way. He was a great man. He was an inspiration. Gene was an inspiration on the battlefield as well, where he valued serving his country as much as he did his community. Commissioned as an officer after his graduation from the University of Florida, Gene served in the Marine Corps for 20 years, leading infantry and security force units at Camp Pendleton, California; Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; Charleston, South Carolina; and Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He served in the Gulf War and Somalia, and he completed two tours in Iraq. Before retiring as Lieutenant Colonel, Gene was awarded the Bronze Star medal for his courage. Friends and fellow Marines Mark Toal, Larry Brown and Paul Mullock, as well as members of the Lower Township School community, knew Gene to be a true Marine, in and out of uniform. Larry Brown: Gene and I and Colonel

A Tribute To Gene Sole ? From Page 36 Mark Toal, USMC, have been best of friends since we were young Lieutenants over 25 years ago, and our families formed a close bond too. Gene was my younger son’s godfather and was truly a man for others. Gene led with a quiet strength, easy way, and keen sense of humor. He was a dedicated father, devoted, loving husband, and a great American. I was proud to be counted among his friends and, like everyone he met, I will miss him terribly. Mark Toal: Gene Sole lived life to the fullest as he selflessly served his God, family, country and Marine Corps. He was a man of impeccable character who always knew the right thing to do, and did it. Gene lived a life of service, both on our nation’s battlefields and educating the future of this country. In doing so, he touched many people and made a positive impact on an entire community. Paul Mullock: Mr Sole was my inspiration to go into the Marines. He was a father figure, an outstanding teacher, and an inspiration to everyone he knew. Kathy Kint: My son Andrew was at the high school in 2003, when Gene was disciplinarian there. Gene was called to service and left. Then, on graduation day, to every-
“Gene led with a quiet strength, easy way, and keen sense of humor. He was a dedicated father, devoted, loving husband, and a great American.” one’s surprise, he came walking down the field toward the bleachers, in full military dress, white gloves and all, and members of the graduating class and their families stood up and gave him a standing ovation. Those kids had the highest respect for him. It made me cry to see such loyalty among that class that day. Loyalty was one of Gene’s greatest attributes in every one of his pursuits – and he had a great deal of them. In college, he served as vice president of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Later, he played in a bluesy jazz band called Old School, coached little league baseball and football, held the position of treasurer for the Cape May County Republican Party, and served as a volunteer in the Cape May City Fire Company, where he also played third base on the softball team. Fellow firefighters Ed Zebrowski, Rick Lundholm, and Rob Elwell, Jr., remember him as someone everyone wanted to be around. Ed Zebrowski: Gene had a presence about him. It wasn’t overbearing, though. It
was subtle, respectful, good-natured, down to earth. Rick Lundholm: Gene had influence. He was a natural born leader. It’s hard to put into words a guy who was so much to so many people. Rob Elwell, Jr.: He was proud, he was unbelievably strong, and a good listener. He really heard what you were saying. And everyone who heard what Gene was saying was usually laughing. Though he was a serious and dedicated man, Gene was playful, with a dry, self-deprecating sense of humor that never ceased to brighten a room. David Craig: Gene believed that the world is a great place, and you have to laugh; you have to laugh all the time. Jim Wadlow: I have so many fond memories. Gene was a practical joker. He went to the University of Florida, and it was the only thing I held against him; I went to Florida State. He would send me UF press clippings about their latest football heroes, and I would send him championship memorabilia. I can remember going to my car and seeing it covered with gator regalia. On top of the antennae, there was a UF baseball cap. I couldn’t take it off; it was too funny, and Gene is the only guy I would have left it on there for. People turned to Gene to

brighten their days. At school, he instilled the discipline that these kids needed, that they craved. The next minute, he’d crack a joke and have you doubled over laughing. Toby Craig: When I think of Gene, I think of smiling every time I see him. He loved Elvis, and thought he could sing like him. We’d go out as a family each year on my wife’s birthday. Gene would excuse himself, and then he’d be in the bushes or on the balcony, singing to my wife. David Smith: His humor was a gift. Once, the art class was doing a project. They would pick a faculty member, take a picture of that person’s face, blow it up, and divide it into sections, and then have students draw those sections. They did that with Gene, and the final product was six feet by six feet. It hung in the hallway, and after about two weeks, I had to do it; I drew devil horns and a mustache on it. They figured out it was me, so Gene pranked me back. He brought me into the principal’s office, and they introduced me to a woman from the cafeteria who was playing the part of a student’s mother. I was told that this woman was very upset, because I’d ruined
her daughter’s art project. That’s the kind of guy Gene was. He had a serious, stressful job, but he could joke around, and he could always make you smile. As the entire Cape May community grieves the loss of Gene Sole, it also draws strength from the lessons he taught, and from the strength of his family, particularly Betsy, Tyler and Jackson. Members of the community, including family friend Dennis Spilker, feel blessed to know Gene’s sons. Dennis Spilker: Through the past few days the quote that rings in my head, and will forever remain, came from Gene’s son, Tyler (and I know he spoke for Jackson as well) when he said, “I want to be like my dad.” Tyler said this at the conclusion of his dad’s funeral mass in a tone that conveyed strength, gratitude and respect. That was Tyler being just like his dad. Thank you, Gene for so many priceless and timeless gifts. Toby Craig: Gene trained his boys well. They are mature. They are well-respected. And they are leaders, just like their father. Dan Cappellletti: Guys like Gene, they earned their ticket to happiness already; we’re still working on ours. Luckily for us, when you meet his boys, you meet Gene.

Cape May should replace those vinyl lighthouse thingies with two Skee-ball machines. That would be a nice welcome for visitors! – Villas
I racked 1136 points at Skeeball and rewarded myself with a platic whistle... Toot toot! – Erma

Needless to say I had to pay for the broken arcade window. – Cape May *** I don’t even think it is possible to ski on a ball! – Cape May [Spouty-Offy Editor’s Note: Again, it is not skiing on a ball. It is a fun arcade game... go play a game of it already in honor of Exit Zero!] *** Is Skee-ball related to pinball? You know, like a second cousin or something? – Cape May

Cape May Cooks
A culinary column by Knickerbocker and the Southern Belle
F
or those of us lucky enough to have a second home or a regular rental location in Cape May, this town becomes more than a mere vacation spot. It is a second life, complete with new friends, a neighborhood and attendant traditions. One of our favorites is the neighborhood block party. In fact, our sixth annual block party just took place! Conveniently, your humble kitchen mavens abide in the same ’hood, so this week we’re sharing some of our “block-buster” favorites. We send with them encouragement to think about organizing your own such gathering. It’s a great way to make new friends, stay in touch with the old, enjoy good food, and add yet another layer of pleasant experiences to this town we love.
Pre-heat oven to 450 degrees. Place the pizza crust on a pizza pan or cookie sheet, and brush with olive oil, if desired. Spread the sauce evenly on the crust, and arrange your toppings – save the cheese for last! Bake for 8-10 minutes. Using a pizza cutter, slice into thin triangular pieces and serve. Harry’s Pulled Pork It wouldn’t be a great block party without this contribution from our neighbor, Harry. However, the recipe is longer than our column allows, so please check it out on the Exit Zero website (exitzero.us/?p=7384). Be forewarned! The recipe involves that most-feared culinary contraption, the pressure cooker. Harry assures us that the new models are entirely safe when operated properly, and are actually back in style. (Good – no one needs additional memories of pea soup on the ceiling and barbecue blasted into kitchen cabinetry.) Sue’s Frogmore Stew serves 12 45 minutes You can also call this a lowcountry shrimp boil, but “Frogmore Stew” is much more colorful! Whatever its name, it’s a delicious way to feed a crowd.

Cape May Cooks ? From Page 45 cook, uncovered, 10 minutes. Add the sausage and corn, return to a boil, and cook 10 minutes until potatoes are tender. Add the shrimp to the pot and cook 3-4 minutes until they turn pink. Drain. Serve with cocktail sauce. Jane’s Beet and Greens Salad serves 8 60-70 minutes, including roasting The combination of flavors in this unusual salad can’t be “beet.” 4-5 golden or red beets, roasted as below 1 lb arugula, or mixed spring greens 2 hardboiled eggs ¾ c roasted and chopped walnuts Vinaigrette: 2 tbsp vinegar 1 ½ tsp Dijon mustard salt and pepper to taste 6 tbsp olive oil To roast the beets, wash and wrap them in foil. Place in a 425 degree oven and cook for 40-60 minutes, depending upon size, until done. Remove from oven, allow to cool, and carefully peel. Prepare the vinaigrette by combining the vinegar, mustard, salt and pepper; then whisk in the oils until blended. Just before serving, slice the beets, and toss them with the greens into a large bowl. Toss again with the vinaigrette (you probably won’t need it all), and serve garnished with the hardboiled eggs and walnuts. Diane’s “EZ as 1-2-3” Coleslaw serves 8 5 minutes 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 2 tbsp mayonnaise 3 tbsp white wine vinegar 2 bags coleslaw mix salt and pepper to taste In a large bowl, mix together the first three ingredients and toss with the coleslaw mix. Add salt and pepper to taste.
Sue’s Plum Crunch serves 8 1 hour This is the time of year when you can find delectable plums in all colors – deep red, purple, yellow. Try a mix of them in this luscious dessert! Adapted from The Barefoot Contessa’s Back to Basics, 2008. 3 lbs ripe red or purple plums, or mixed colors 1 ½ c light brown sugar, lightly packed 1/4 c flour 6 tbsp cranberry liqueur or something similar, like crème de cassis For the topping: 1 ½ c flour 3/4 c granulated sugar 3/4 c light brown sugar, lightly packed 1/2 tsp kosher salt 1 c oatmeal 1/2 c chopped walnuts 2 sticks cold butter, diced Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Slice the plums into quarters or smaller, and place in a large bowl with the brown sugar, flour and liqueur. Pour mixture into a 12x8 inch baking dish. For the topping, combine the flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, salt, oatmeal, walnuts and butter in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment. Mix on low speed until mixture is crumbly, then scatter evenly over the plum mixture. You can also cut the butter into the dry ingredients with a pastry blender. Bake the plum crunch for about 40 minutes, until plums are bubbly and the top is browned.

The Inside Scoop On City Hall
H
A user’s guide to Cape May City council meetings... by Kate Chadwick and Jon Roth
ere we are again. The good (or at least well-intentioned) folks on the city council convened another meeting last week, when storms were brewing across Cape May. Happily, the atmosphere in the council chamber was less tense than it’s been in past weeks. We grabbed a seat, cracked our notebooks, poised our pencils and took everything down for your reading pleasure. Meeting of Cape May City Council, Tuesday, August 16, 2011. 7:05 – We pledge allegiance to the flag, followed by a moment of respectful silence for Gene Sole, whose recent passing has truly shaken the community. 7:06 – Mayor Ed Mahaney explains that the minutes of this meeting have been distributed to council members, and local papers (Exit Zero still doesn’t count, but we were able to locate the minutes on the website this time - no more scrambling to write down ordinance numbers for us). 7:07 – Mayor Mahaney, wearing a navy
suit with a plum-colored paisley tie, takes the podium for a proclamation regarding the Cape May Beach Patrol. He’s stopped short by a crying baby, which he goodnaturedly described as “one of our future lifeguards.” He congratulates the women of the CMBP for winning the Cape Atlantic Lifeguard Women’s Invitational for the first time in its 17-year history. This year also marks the 100th anniversary of the CMBP. These events, compounded by Cape May’s

hosting of the USLA National Lifeguard Championships, creates what the mayor calls a “trifecta” of lifeguard excellence of late. Referring to the winners of the Women’s Invitational, Mayor Mahaney says “the public and media need to know what these ladies do outside of their lifeguard duties,” in addition to the invaluable work they do to keep our beaches safe. 7:10 – To that end, Mayor Mahaney issues a proclamation for each of the seven ladies (attired in colorful sundresses and healthy tans). In the proclamation they are credited as “performing at the highest qualitative levels.” Patrice Back, Angela Monaghan, Kelsey Herchenrider, Melissa Hessler, Mary Grace Maggiano, Meghan O’Leary and Max Van Dyke all come to the podium to receive their proclamation. Afterwards, Mayor Mahaney remarks, “When you shake hands with these young ladies, you can really tell they’ve been working out!”

Each lifeguard speaks briefly about their careers outside of lifeguarding, which include instructing on health and lifestyle at Binghamton University, performing on varsity swim teams at The College of New Jersey (among other colleges), pursuing advanced degrees in counseling and education, among others. As each guard speaks, Mayor Mahaney leans against the stage and positively beams for the duration. (Not something we often see during these meetings.) Afterwards he returns to the podium and thanks them a final time for their tremendous efforts. 7:25 – Lifeguard Tom Medveky, from Piscataway, NJ, is also called to the podium and given a proclamation for placing second in a very competitive swimming competition during the 72nd Annual South Jersey Lifeguard Competition. Tom remarks that receiving the award “is awesome,” and thanks his “beautiful girlfriend Kelsey [Herchenrider]” for convincing him to come to Cape May for the summer. Tom, who’s attired in a gray polo and khakis, is an education and history major from the College of New Jersey. 7:30 – CMBP Captain Buzz Mogck thanks the council for their support during the USLA Championships. Ed Zebrowski adds, “Without the support of the community, city council and mayor, we could never have put on this event.” 7:35 – City Clerk Diane Weldon, clad in a print blouse and tiered peasant skirt, does a roll call (all members still present) before addressing ordinance 237-2011. This amends the city code to allow for a personal, designated handicap parking space for a property owner on New York Avenue. No one objects to this ordinance, because you would have to be a bit heartless to do so.
7:38 – There is another roll call (the purpose of repeating this ritual still eludes us) and ordinance 238-2011 is introduced. City Attorney Anthony Monzo, looking striking in a black suit, crisp white shirt and red tie, explains that this ordinance restricts a 200-foot plot on Canning House Lane from being zoned as residential. This is due to the remediation of tank leakage at nearby Public Works. All vote yes again, as no one wants locals to live on contaminated land and start generating extra limbs. 7:40 – It’s just about time for the resolutions! As it is Deputy Mayor Jack Wichterman’s turn to read them, Mayor Mahaney quips, “We tried to put on as many resolutions as possible for Jack’s edification.” 7:41 – Deputy Mayor Wichterman, wearing a navy blazer and blue shirt with a rakish open collar, proceeds to read the resolutions as follows: 170 – Application of a grant to fund seminars in alcohol and drug abuse. 171 – Settlement of dispute between City of Cape May and dispatchers, resulting in back pay of overtime to the tune of $5,000. 172 – Citizens have until September 6 to pay their real estate taxes without penalty. However, if you miss this date, you will pay interested accrued all the way back to August 1. Pay those taxes on time, folks, or your bank account will take an unnecessary hit! 173 – Application to Local

The Inside Scoop On City Hall ? From Page 52 Finance Board to close out loan on projects related to upgrading the city water system. 174 – Authorization of beach replenishment and sand removal. The council has met with the Department of Environmental Protection and agrees with the plan. Should take place this fall, and will hopefully positively affect the slope of the beach. 175 – Additional revenue from the Municipal Utilities Authorities. The city will receive $11,000 because we do such a bang-up job of recycling. 176 – Pertains to union contract negotiations and will be addressed during a closed session. 177 - 179 – Appointments of Evelyn Lovitz, Edward Connolly and Joan Johnson to the Environmental, Historic Preservation and Shade Tree Commissions, respectively. 180 A and B – Payment of bills. 181 – Authorization to put surplus city materials (police equipment, trash trucks, etc.) on a website to be auctioned off. 182 – Cancellation of real estate taxes on a property erroneously billed twice (ouch!). 7:48 – Deputy Mayor Wichterman introduces Resolution 168-08-2011, regarding the purchase of a new police car. He reminds the council that, “We chose to downsize police car costs” in the last meeting, and that, “If we don’t buy the car, Chief Diane Sorantino doesn’t think there will be a problem.” He adds “I’ll be damned if we need more than a six-cylinder vehicle anyway,” and remarks that the prospective car, a Crown Victoria, will be obsolete by the end of the year. 7:50 – Councilmember Bill Murray rejoins that the next vehicle model won’t be available until 2012, meaning it won’t be available here until 2013, and that Chief Diane Sorantino recommended the
purchase of a new car “to make sure our rotation is up to date.” He adds that the frequent wearand-tear on police cars means they age much more quickly than private vehicles. Also, the council had already budgeted for the purchase of a new car. Councilmember Deanna Fiocca, clad in basic black, agrees with Councilmember Murray regarding the purchase of a new car, adding “For the 12 hours the police people are working, this car is their office.”
7:52 – Coucilmember Terri Swain, also clad in black, is not in favor of the purchase, remarking “I would never invest in a vehicle that won’t be produced in the future.” Councilmember Murray reminds the council that even when a car is no longer produced, car parts still are. 7:54 – Mayor Mahaney votes for the purchase. To do otherwise, he says, would jeopardize the safety of our officers. He says that 70,000 miles on a police car is the equivalent of 140,000 miles on a private vehicle. Not buying a car now would require the purchase of two cars in 2013, when the current cars are already due for replacement. 7:56 – The resolution is put to a vote. All council members vote according to their ini-

tial sentiments, meaning the majority votes for the purchase of the new police car. 8:02 – During our favorite section of the meeting, City Clerk Weldon lists the lengthy number of minutes and reports from a slew of committee too numerous to mention without our eyes glazing over. 8:05 – The council now address unfinished business (which, to us, always sounds like the title to a film noir flick). The ‘business’ today regards the Columbia Avenue water tower: rebuild, or rehabilitate?

Councilmember Murray advocates for rehabilitation. It will extend the life of the tank for a possible 50 years. Councilmember Fiocca agrees, adding that rehabilitation doesn’t require a disruption of water service, either. Councilmember Swain and Deputy Mayor Wichterman concur – with the latter adding “to me, it was a no-brainer.” Remington & Vernick Engineers will draw up plans for the rehab this September. Mayor Mahaney also agrees. “In this difficult economic time, we are trying to save money and spend it wisely,” he says, and this decision adheres to those values. He
turns to Deputy Mayor Wichterman and asks, “Since it was a no-brainer, I guess we did all this research for nothing!” 8:14 – City Attorney Monzo recounts the funeral service held that day for Gene Monzo, remarking quite movingly that there were over 2,000 people at the viewing in Lower Cape May Regional High School, followed by a funeral attended by 600 people (standing room only) at St. John of God. There was a procession through Cape May, followed by a burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery with full military honors and a 21-gun salute. City Attorney Monzo adds that Sole was a Scoutmaster since its inception in town in 1994, and was “never in the limelight, only concerned about the scouts.” He then quotes Abraham Lincoln, saying “It’s not the years in your life that count, it’s the life in your years.” City Attorney Monzo, who is clearly emotional while speaking, adds that Sole lived a lot of life in his 48 years. 8:20 – City Manager Bruce MacLeod, in a white shirt and gold tie, reminds us that the grace period for real estate taxes extends to September 6. Don’t be late, or you’ll be paying fees from August 1.
He then relates recent figures on parking meter and beach tag sales. Tag sales in 2010 reached roughly $1,280,000, while this year’s numbers are about $1,410,000. Meter revenue in 2010 was $471,091, while this year’s revenue was $538,792. These

Let’s all get together and do it again sometime (like next summer, for instance). 8:25 – Deputy Mayor Wichterman remarks that the convention hall construction is going very well, “on schedule, if not ahead” (small miracles!). He thinks the steelwork should be up by next month.
He also questions whether drivers with handicapped plates can be exempt from parking meter payments. It will be a topic for discussion in the next meeting.
Thursday, August 25, 2011 8:29 – Mayor Mahaney says that there will be a public meeting regarding the beach replenishment in late September or early October, where the Army Corps of Engineers will explain the process. It will be a “back-passing and dredging operation,” and should give our shores a gentler slope. 8:30 – During the public portion, Bernie Haas, a city council stalwart like ourselves, approaches the podium. He’s wearing a blue-and-white windowpane checked oxford, khakis and boat shoes, without socks. He inquires whether any decision has been made about Officer Tony Genaro. Mayor Mahaney replies, “It’s being worked on. We’ll let you know when there’s an update.” Haas then addresses his favorite subject, the absence of banners in town touting us as a National Historic Landmark. Where is the lift truck necessary to hang the banners? City Manager MacLeod replies (as he did during the last council meeting) that the lift truck will arrive in September. “That’s funny,” Haas remarks. “The banners went up for the USLA competition and that was no problem at all. Hmm...” Haas adds that the lifeguard championships were also “a no-brainer,” a great
event for the city. Additionally, website visits to CapeMay.com have shot up 40% this summer. Councilmember Murray remarks on a “very laudatory article” about Cape May in the Los Angeles Times. Haas responds “this is indeed a tourist town, and tourism is alive and well.”
8:36 – The meeting is adjourned and the council prepares to enter a closed session. Everyone pats everyone else on the back and heads out into a blustery August evening.

First thing’s first. If you want to compete effectively, you’ve got to be in the right frame of mind. A visit to Balance Pilates and Yoga will get your Zen together. The island’s only fully equipped yoga and Pilates studio is ready to help you find your center. Check the website for special rates and packages. 600 Park Boulevard, West Cape May, 609-884-3001, www.balancecapemay.com.
Sure, you can scrimp and save the oldfashioned way by putting your quarters in a piggy bank, or you can take a ten-dollar bill into Cape Bank on Jackson Street and Lacey and company will hook you up with a roll of quarters. Less time scrimping (or worse, feeding parking meters) means more time kicking Skee-ball butt. 217 Jackson Street, 609-884-0900, www.capebankonline2.com.
You say you’ve got no Skee-ball skill whatsoever? Then call upon a talisman from our friends at Guardian. Affix a lucky ladybug to your shirt or your purse for a mere $2.25. Don’t want the competition to see your secret weapon? Slip a lucky stone into your pocket – Susan says an emerald is best for luck in all things. 221 Jackson Street, 609-8846179, www.guardiancapemay.com.
Trash Talk Tee From Great White Shark
Sexy Shoes From The Ladies Room
Wine From Collier’s Liquors
Save the chatter and let your T-shirt do the talking. There’s no better selection of trash talk T-shirts than the one at Great White Shark, and they’re open from 9am-11pm. So select the one that best conveys your sentiments and keep your Skee-ball competition in get-back mode. Prices are $9 and up. 410 Washington Street, 609-884-1811, www.greatwhitesharkcapemay.com.
Desperate times call for desperate measures. If you’re simply hapless when it comes to Skee-ball, wear these strappy, sexy sandals by Rampage from The Ladies Room Consignment Boutique and trust us – no one will notice (particularly if you’re a man). And if you insist on being practical, they have cute flats, too. Can’t beat the price - $14. 219 Jackson Street, 609-770-7524.
Another day of vanquishing Skee-ball opponents is at an end, time to kick back with a victory beverage. Crack open a bottle of this Lucky Star Pinot Grigio by Trade Mark from our bff’s at Collier’s and toast your accomplishments. After all, Skee-ball is a tough business (which is why we suggest drinking it after, not before). $17.99. 202 Jackson Street, 609-884-0297, www.colliersliquor.com.

Customer Service
W
The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone
hen I decided I wanted to be a writer, I worried that my life was too normal, too dull. At the time, I was living in suburbia with an English setter and parents who were still together. My childhood consisted of jumping through sprinklers and playing neighborhood games of freeze tag. I’d experienced no tremendous heartache, no great loss, no grand adventure. My life wasn’t the stuff of the next great American novel. I questioned whether even I would find a book about me all that interesting. I longed for some inspiration, for some absurdity. Then I started waiting tables, and I realized the truth behind the “Be careful what you wish for” adage. I faced a whole new problem: life was suddenly too absurd. I could have written about the woman who exposed her breasts in the dining room, but I didn’t think anyone would believe that actually happened. I could have written about the customer who slapped a server over a plate of mashed potatoes, but I worried
no one would believe that, either. And I could have written about the lady who stole a lamp from the bathroom, the man who called the cops on the restaurant because he waited too long for a table, or the bag of multicolored dildos one guest accidentally left behind, but once again, I think my readers would only have ended up questioning my credibility. So I’ve opted, more often than not, to write about the less shocking (but more believable) stuff – like my trouble opening a bottle of Champagne or that guy who changes his order five times. I’ve chosen not to write about the kind of thing that happened yesterday, when the sober couple
on table seven asked our busboy (and, after he refused, our busgirl) if he wouldn’t mind partaking in a threesome. That’s the thing about working in a restaurant. Absurdity becomes the norm. Discovering a bag of unmentionables under a tablecloth or encountering a couple who thinks a busser is a menu item – that’s all in a day’s work. Start experiencing so much absurdity on a daily basis, and you’ll find yourself longing for the days of running through sprinklers in suburbia. I wish I hadn’t taken all of that for granted. We spend so much time looking for a life more exciting, more dramatic, and altogether more absurd, we neglect to find the extraordinary in the everyday. If I’ve learned anything from waiting tables, it’s that there is a lot to be learned from the little particulars of daily life, and from the everyday folks we meet along the way. Call me absurd, but I’ve come to enjoy writing about the restaurant not because of all the shocking oddballs who come to eat on a nightly basis, but because of all the dull, less than headlineworthy folks who do. Believe it or not.

The Answer Lady Wise answers to perplexing questions
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady My sister and her new fiancé came to visit in Cape May. This was our first time meeting him, and he seems like a good guy. The wife and I took them to the Nail for dinner and drinks, and then a game of Skee-ball on the promenade. Well, that was a bad idea, because he was so competitive that he practically ruined a great night – tantrums when anyone got a higher score, sulking when he lost. What is up with that? – Big Brother Dear Big Ah, yes – those competitive types have always mystified the Answer Lady (along with people who yell at the television during sporting events). It is one thing to be confident in one’s abilities – a little high-spirited trash-talking never hurt anyone, and since the Answer Lady routine thrashes the competition at Skee-ball, she has been guilty
of that herself. But it’s quite another to be a tantrum-throwing evening-ruiner. The best way to deal with a person like this, unfortunately, is to not get into these situations in the first place, because if he’s going to act like that with Skee-ball, which is essentially a solitary activity in which people compare scores, what the heck would he be like at miniature golf, where you’re actually competing with each other? Or Monopoly, or gin rummy, or checkers, and for heaven’s sake, don’t even think about taking him to Trivia Night at

the VFW. Best to stick to dinner, movies, strolling the mall, and other safe activities. Remember, gentle readers: it’s not whether you win or lose, it’s whether you make an ass of yourself in public. Dear Answer Lady My sister is very excited about her new guy, but I must confess, I’m a little underwhelmed by him. She is very chatty and outgoing, while he seems quiet. She’s got a career, while he works in retail. They live half-way across the country, so I’ve only ‘met’ him via Skype, but I feel un-sisterly for not being excited for her. Is it me? – Little Sister Dear Little Yes, it could be you. A couple of chats over Skype are not enough to form an accurate opinion. Perhaps she is sick of the chatfests that occur when she dates men similar to herself, and wants someone to be quiet with. Maybe he works in retail because he got tired of sitting home counting his lottery winnings, and it gets him out of the house. If he’s a nice person and your sister seems genuinely happy, keep your reservations to yourself, at least until you meet him in person.

Ugly Mug Hosts A Night Of Frothy Fun
Y
The National Froth Blowing Competition has contestants clamoring for victory
es, boys and girls and beer fans far and wide, it may be hard to believe but it’s that time of year again. Celebrate the unofficial close of summer 2011 with the annual National Froth Blowing Contest at the Ugly Mug, slated for this coming Sunday, August 28 at 6pm. This phenomenon has been a part of Cape May culture (much like the Mug itself) for decades, and it’s an absurdly fun and very popular event, whether you are a participant or just coming out to support your favorite blower. There will be music with DJ Jeff Walden and Five Hour Jones, and you can peruse the photos on the Mug’s walls of the many froth-blowers of years past. If you’ve never attended this event, we heartily recommend you check it out, and if you’ve been there, well – you already know. The best part is that proceeds for this event benefit the very worthy Police Athletic League. Registration begins at noon, so our advice is don’t just sit there – start practicing now. For more information, you can reach the Ugly Mug at 884-3459.

dON’T dance, don’t ask me. If that’s good enough for the Chairman of the Board, then it will have to suffice for me too. Although it’s common knowledge that women like guys who can dance, and the Answer Lady would no doubt encourage me to take lessons from Tom Cupp, I don’t dance. There will be those who claim that I’m just being stubborn, that nobody will notice if I just get out there and shake it. Some will tell me that there’s no cause to be self-conscious. Everyone seems to have a reason why I should dance. But nobody wants to listen to why I don’t. I’ve got a great sense of rhythm, but I express it through my hands, not my feet. That’s why I like to play drums: I can sit behind the band and keep the beat. I liken myself to Peter Gabriel, who claims to “dance by intuition.” Peter has lots of talents, but dancing ain’t one of them, and he knows it. Over the years I’ve tweaked enough parts of my body that a night of dancing now is followed by a morning of pain meds.
I don’t bust a move, I bust a leg. (Seriously. The last time I danced, in Philadelphia, I actually fell and broke my leg.) Break dancing is a more of a medical diagnosis for me. I do hip replacement hop. But the bottom line is that dancing is supposed to be fun, and for me it’s not. In my youth, I went out dancing a lot with a good friend/mentor and his wife. When he was killed by a drunk driver, I stopped dancing. And still, today, dancing picks at
that scab in my memory. It’s not that I can’t dance, it’s just that I don’t. I have more fun not dancing than I do the other way ‘round. Ladies, there are plenty of things we could do on a date. Dinner, movies, concerts, all sorts of adventures, and I’d be happy to have fun with you doing any or all of those things. But if you intend to accept me as I am, you’ll have to accept a certain lack of rhythmic gyration. Tom Cupp, you keep doing what you do, because it works for you, as it does for most guys. Answer Lady, I adore you, but there’s no easy solution to this. And to the Dancing queens of Cape May, enjoy yourselves, and then come find me at the bar when you’re finished. Let’s keep our feet firmly planted on the ground, maybe beneath a restaurant table. Join me for dinner at one of Cape May’s finest eateries. Afterwards, I’ll write about it ( your name will be changed, the restaurant’s won’t). Just contact info@ exitzero.us and I’ll set it up. As long you’re okay with the fact that it’ll be strictly NOT ballroom.

The Music Scene
Arts Editor Tom Sims explores the complex lyrics and melodies of Gordon Vincent’s “Mechanical Breakdown”
G
ordon Vincent’s third collection of songs, Mechanical Breakdown, continues to build on his reputation as a soulful composer with unmistakable talent as both a musician and lyricist. With the launch of this CD, Vincent has brought several emerging and established Cape May musicians out to play. Throughout the 13 tracks, what is most impressive is that Vincent elevates his own standard for quality production, widening his musical circle to include local favorites George Mesterhazy, Jimm Ross, and Andrew Reeves, as well as Nashville’s Rachel Owen, a gifted vocalist. The track to first capture my attention was “Reason to Leave.” On the CD there are two versions — first a quiet solo from Vincent, then later a more upbeat rendition with Rachel Owen on lead vocals. Vincent writes: “What if I had everything that you needed yeah but nothing that you want/ Except a reason to leave me, baby, and a reason to go/A reason to leave me, baby, and find something all your own.” Powerful words and sophisticated melody make it
difficult to choose which version I prefer. Vincent takes some risks on this string of songs, breaking the mood sometimes mid-song to throw your senses. Somehow, he brings you back to a place where you can better appreciate the songs as you take them in their entirety. In “Annie’s Garden,” Vincent writes: “Love is a chorus of angels singing on high/Love is falling like rain from
an angel’s eye/Love is a puddle of gases that form a miracle/Love is a moment of time strapped to the wing of a gull.” The words are as poetic as the music is advanced. Sometimes compared to Bob Dylan, Vincent’s songs do have a folk quality, but putting his work in a category doesn’t do justice to his range. Like some of the modalities he mingles between and during songs on this CD, his genre is difficult to pin down. This is one of those volumes that you will play over and over to fine tune your ear to his assortment of melodies and words. From the song entitled “Who Was the One?” Vincent sings: “Out and down that road/I have come so far/I went all the way/And did not ask more/Now we are through/And I’ll stop chasing you/There’s just one thing that I don’t understand/Who was the one?/Who did you want?” You can find Vincent playing at Higher Grounds here in Cape May and points northbound. A true talent; we’re lucky to have him. Visit gordonvincent.com for details on this CD and his two previous collections.

The Old Fogey
Y
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
ou call that Skee-ball? In my day, when we invented Skeeball, we played it along the Promenade, using the severed heads of Vikings as balls (the Vikings had arrived in America thinking they were the first visitors: imagine those hairy louts’ surprise when they leapt ashore from their longships intent on looting and pillaging and suchlike, only to find themselves in bustling Cape May during High Season! We dispatched them in short order, of course, and then decided to make use of their heads as a lesson to any other barbarians who might think to rape us all. We had considered soccer, but have you ever kicked a horned helmet? I think not, at least not without losing some toes. And we had a ramp built already, from when we were testing our first prototype aeroplane the previous day. We’d had the contraption sitting at the low end, and a team of stout lads at the other, who on my signal hauled it along with a rope with sufficient force to launch it into the sky. At least, that was the
plan: in retrospect, while I think the actual idea of f light was a good few centuries ahead of its time, my design of a 100-seater craft fashioned from whalebone and leather, with nice brass fittings and an observation deck, was perhaps too ambitious. In any event, the monster just rolled up the ramp, then back down at speed, trundling off into the sunset trailing the shrieking men on the rope. It eventually rolled into the sea off The Point, where the remains can be seen jutting out to this day.
Anyway, I digress: we had all these Viking heads and nothing much planned for entertainment, so I came up with the idea of making an entirely new sport: we simply cut holes in the ramp and took turn hurling the heads. At first, scoring was low, and the horned helmets tended to stick in the ramp, ending the game, but in time we ironed out the problems and it went so well we started a “Viking-head-ball” league. We were champions, due in no small part to our ready supply of heads (we had to deal with regular incursions from the howling wilderness that was to eventually become the howling wilderness of Wildwood), and our most bitter rivals were Philly, led by an unprincipled rogue by the name of Este. After we had won for the tenth time, he had the gall to “civilize” the game, calling it “Skee-ball” and banning the use of human body parts. I of course visited him in his Philly hovel, in attempt to settle the matter amicably, and when he agreed I thrashed him like a dog with my walking stick anyways, just to set an example to those who would cross Cape May.

The Cape May Crossword
None of that generic nonsense you see in other papers... a puzzle just for “Exit Zero”! By Jon Roth So YOU love crosswords? Great. Sit down, get a cup (or glass) of your favorite beverage, relax and enjoy this puzzle. The answers to the crossword are all related to this week’s issue. Our theme this week: Skee-ball (and arcades). The solution can be found on the front page of our website, www.exitzero.us. Across 1. This popular arcade fighter game, first released in 1992, featured characters like Scorpion and Sub-Zero. 7. This misnamed peninsula off the south of Brooklyn was home to some of the first arcade games, as well as amusement parks and freak shows. 9. In this Japanese arcade game the player attempts to destroy swarms of aliens while guarded behind disintegrating buffers. 11. Released for Nintendo consoles as well as in arcades, your objective in this game is to shoot as many Mallards as possible. 14. This game, which features a yellow head munching on dots and avoiding ghosts, is one of only three video games in the Smithsonian Institution. 16. This company, better known for producing theater organs and jukeboxes, briefly owned the rights to the Skee-ball machine in the 1930s. 19. This arcade game pits Mario against an irate, barrel-throwing monkey.
Skee-ball was invented in this nearby city. 5 Down.
23. Many people compare Skee-ball to this game, only without the pins. 24. In 1932, the first Skee-ball tournament was held in this city, sometimes called the Vegas of the East Coast. 25. Released in 1981 by Konami, this game requires you to help direct amphibians across a busy highway. Down 2. This game came out in the wake of a 1980s Disney film of the same name. The arcade game ended up grossing more than the film’s initial release. 3. This two-player table game involves two mallets and a puck – just be sure to watch your fingers. 4. Your goal in this game is to destroy a mushroom-munching segmented insect. 5. The game of Skee-ball was invented by J. Dickinson Este in this city – also the home of the Slinky and the cheesteak. 6. This Montreal-based band won a Grammy for Best Album this year.
8. This movement-oriented game, often abbreviated as DDR, started out as a huge hit in Japan. 10. When you’re sick of playing games at the arcade, slip into one of these with a friend to make a few memories. 12. This is the currency of choice in American arcades – pennies have gone by the wayside, unfortunately. 13. You’ll want to collect plenty of these if you plan on leaving the arcade with a nice prize. 15. He covered The Who’s “Pinball Wizard” from the rock opera Tommy. 17. Grab a mallet and hit as many pesky rodents as you can in this game. 18. You may be no good at soccer, but with a few nimble flicks of the wrist you can be a champion at this table sport. 20. In this animated Pixar film, a gang of green aliens worship ‘the claw.’ 21. Work those flippers and bumpers to keep the silver ball in play and win this game. 22. In Big, a 13-year-old boy turns into Tom Hanks thanks to this fortune-telling machine.

Activity Of The Week
A
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Movies on the Beach
s another summer of “Movies on the Beach” comes to a close, it’s time to reflect on just what makes outdoor movies so much fun. According to Smithsonian.com, people have been watching movies outside since the medium was invented. Silent films were projected onto sheets in parks and backyards at the turn of the 20th century. In 1933, Richard Hollingshead, Jr. was granted a patent for the first drive-in theater. Drive-ins, with their playgrounds, encouraged parents to bring the kids. Ideally, tots would fall asleep while mom and dad watched the movie. Most drive-ins have faded to black, victims not of daylight savings time, which was supposed to kill the industry, but of rising real estate values. Selling land proved more profitable than selling Hollywood dreams for a quarter a ticket. But the magic of outdoor movies lives on in Cape May. On the beach in Cape May, the movie doesn’t even cost a quarter. Parents still bring their kids to play before the movie starts. The event lives up to its billing - it’s
“fun, free and friendly,” just as the chamber of commerce advertises. At 7:30, an hour before the movie is scheduled to begin, people gather on the beach at Howard Street, behind the convention hall construction site. Kids, scrubbed free of sunscreen, play on the dusky beach, and no need for bug spray, thanks to a nice breeze, which carries kites further
than they flew this afternoon. People line up politely to pose for pictures in the lifeguard chairs. Organized relay races and line dances keep some kids busy, while others race the waves. More than a few wind up wet and sandy - again - but no one seems to mind. At 8:30, when it’s time for the movie, people find spots for their beach chairs, babies and blankets. No one is too concerned with their seat location - most people have seen the movie before, and are revisiting it as an old friend. Parents introduce their children to classic movies of their own childhoods - An American Tale, Jaws, The Karate Kid, Alice in Wonderland, the Goonies, Star Wars. Kids enjoy being outside at night, under the stars. Teenagers share popcorn and giggles. Grandfathers snooze. Many people leave before the end of the movie. Armed with flashlights, they try not to step on their fellow moviegoers as they carry their sleeping kids back home. The last “Movie on the Beach” is scheduled for August 25. Go. Buy popcorn. Marvel at how quickly we moved from “summer’s here” to “see you next year.” Next week: The 15th Annual Airfest

Announcing Cape May’s Employee Of The Week photograph by Danielle O’Neal
Robert Panaccio, VMD Robert Moffatt, VMD Patricia Link, DVM
Name: Gary Fisher Occupation: Maintenance Director, Summer Station Age: I’m 52. Hometown: I’m originally from Voorhees, currently live in Villas. How long have you worked here? I’ve been with Summer Station for 23 years. Best thing about the job? The socializing. We have lots of repeat guests, and you get to know them. I’ve seen a lot of their kids grow up. What do you recommend here? I always tell guests you can’t beat Cape May for the restaurants. If you want to know a good place to eat, you just ask a local. What’s your OTHER dream job? To own my own hotel, I guess. No more plunging toilets, and I could be my own boss. Favorite thing about Cape May? I love to walk, and I love walking through this town. Frankie is a handsome, friendly boy who still needs lots of training. He’ll need someone knowledgeable with strong dogs and a firm hand to give him the guidance he needs. He can get rough while playing, so he will have to go to a home without cats, dogs or kids. Otherwise he really is a good boy who just needs someone willing to give him the training and encouragement he needs. Adoption fee is $95.
«
Bono has a great zest for life. He loves to play, and would make an awesome companion for whomever adopts him. He will need some basic training but he seems like a fast learner. He belongs in a home with older children because he has the potential to knock over smaller children. If you think he could fit in to your lifestyle please come meet him. We’re sure you’ll be happy you did! Adoption fee is $95.

If you think Mitchell may be a fit for your lifestyle stop in and meet him today. Adoption fee is $95.

Victor is a really sweet solid black domestic short hair that loves to talk! He really likes to be petted too. He is a more relaxed cat that enjoys being held, and loves attention, so he would probably make an ideal lap cat! If you’re looking for a loving, relaxed lap cat to lounge around with you, come give him a look! Adoption fee is $20.

Sam is patiently waiting for a home. He’s a six-year-old black short haired male. His owners passed away recently, and the family left him alone in the house. He’s very affectionate and loves attention. Sam is also declawed. If you think he sounds like the right cat for you, stop on by the shelter and give him a look. Adoption fee is $35.
«
Albert loves to be petted, but make sure you’re careful when you do. Sometimes he will grab your hand if you try to stop! He would make a great barn cat, and would be great for catching mice. Albert doesn’t belong in a home with small children. Stop by the shelter if you think you might be a good fit for him. Adoption fee is $35.

The Movie Column
T
Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews "The Help"
he Help is a new film based on a novel by Kathryn Stockett that has as garnered its fair share of praise, criticism and controversy. Not surprisingly, the film version has been heralded as Oscar-worthy, panned as melodrama, and judged as doing more harm than good for the issues it seeks to address. The Help is the story of a white journalist who gets a crazy idea in early 1960s Jackson, Mississippi. The idea: to capture the true stories of black maids working for white families throughout the town. The story told captures the agony of those maids, the varied emotions from white employers, and the mood of the town and country at a volatile time in our history. I took none of the critics' notes with me before seeing The Help, so I had a fresh eye of sorts. Is the film a tear-jerker? Sure. But is it a schmaltzy tear-jerker that uses gimmicks to evoke emotion? Absolutely not. Even its worst critics will no doubt honor a stellar cast for performances that are simply outstanding. Let’s remember that these actors are reading from an outstanding script as well. And
The Help features a stellar cast and a taut script truly each one provides an Oscar-worthy performance. Viola Davis plays Aibileen Clark, caretaker for a young couple’s toddler daughter. To say her performance is convincing is a gross understatement. The way she cares for the child, tells her how she is pretty and important — priceless. I can already see her standing in
front of the Academy accepting her award. And equally as impressive is the performance of Octavia Spencer as Minny Jackson, another maid who reluctantly agrees to tell her story. Once she opens that door, she soon learns that it is indeed a flood gate — and her character reports on a litany of abuses. Several of the abuses stem from interactions with her current employer, Hille Holbrook, masterfully played by Bryce Dallas Howard. Also noteworthy is the performance of Jessica Chastain as Celia Foote — who hires Minny after Hille fires her. An outsider in the community, Celia shows a positive side to the domestic help story. And lastly Emma Stone is superb as the white journalist, Skeeter Phelan, who encourages “the help” to tell their true stories. This film is well crafted and well told. Its director is newcomer Tate Tyler, who has few if any notable credits. This film should put him on the map — if he can dodge a few undeserved shots. Leave the critics’ notes at home and enjoy The Help. And please, if you disagree with me (or agree, for that matter), email capemayfilm@hotmail.com to let me know.

his year, my friend’s 14-year marriage came to an end. You probably think that something explosive must have gone down – she cheated with his brother, he decided he was gay, someone died. After all, it would take something that big or that irreversible to end a relationship that far along. But what ended this, and so many other long-term relationships just like it, was not explosive at all. No one realized the other’s infidelity. No one discovered the other’s weird foot fetish or secret shrine to a cross-dressing ex. No one died. It took something far more subtle than this. It was a slow fizzling out. It was, according to my friend, a lack of magic. “Magic” is a word I hear over and over. Everyone, it seems, is looking for some kind of relationship abracadabra. And people are so convinced it exists, they’re willing to call off a magic-less marriage even a decade in. Companionship isn’t enough. Compatibility isn’t enough. Even love just isn’t enough. Ask any single Cape Mayniac and she will tell you: none of this is worth anything without the magic.

When it comes to this subject, I’m torn. (Shocking, I know.) Part of me thinks that yes, of course, there should be something magical about finding your one and only. Settle for anything less and you are just that – settling. Call it spark. Call it chemistry. Call it whatever you want; just don’t commit without it, or you’re doomed for divorce. Another part of me thinks that relationship magic is merely some fairytale notion concocted by Hollywood to keep us all

And while that’s a beautiful thing, it’s bound to fade after a few kids or a few mortgage payments. What you’re left with a couple of years in, if you’re very lucky, is a partner who will share the remote control. The companionship, the compatibility, and the love – that is as much magic as you’re going to get. Then again, a third part of me doesn’t care either way whether the “magic” my friends are referring to is real or not. Because it doesn’t matter; it’s real to them. I watched a magician pull a bunny out of a hat when I was a kid. This wasn’t real, of course; it was nothing but a trick. It didn’t matter because, at the time, it was real to me. Maybe the important thing to remember about magic is that it doesn’t come from a wand, and it doesn’t come from another person. The only one with the power to create your own relationship magic is you.

In the fall of 2001 I was told that I may never walk again. I am so grateful for the wonderful doctors and technology that have given me my life back. Others are not as fortunate. After my injury I researched different charities dedicated to spinal cord awareness. As an avid surfer, I was particularly interested in the Life Rolls On Foundation (www.liferollson.org). Life Rolls On (LRO) is a non-profit 501(c)3 Foundation that exists to be a grassroots resource and an advocate on behalf of young people who have sustained a spinal cord injury (SCI). Their tagline, “Instilling in people that life with SCI does indeed roll on.”
