The Police Blotter
TULARE COUNTY, CA: Police broke up a cockfight and the participants and animals scattered. Later a 35-year-old man died of excessive bleeding from a knife wound to his calf inflicted by a cock. To date he is the only man known to be killed by a rooster.
Classic Quotations
A Story From The Past A wide screen just makes a bad film twice as bad. – Samuel Goldwyn Everyone told me to pass on Speed because it was a ‘bus movie.’ – Sandra Bullock Adding sound to movies would be like putting lipstick on the Venus de Milo. – Mary Pickford It’s the movies that have really been running things in America. They show you what to do, how to do it, when to do it, how to feel about it, and how to look how you feel about it. – Andy Warhol Shoot a few scenes out of focus. I want to win the foreign film award. – Billy Wilder The length of a film should be directly related to the endurance of the human bladder. – Alfred Hitchcock
CAPE Island grew from a small colonial settlement into a self-sustaining town. Farmers and fishermen saw great prosperity with the inf lux of new residents to purchase their goods and the increasing number of summer sojourners fostered a new industry on the island – hospitality. Cape May saw its first post office in 1804. The first postmaster was the proprietor of the Atlantic Hotel, Ellis Hughes. He shared his time between the inn and the post office with relative ease. – Ben Miller

Weird Word Of The Week
Klieg Short for Klieglight, these lamps produce a brilliant light, allowing filmmakers to simulate daytime in the darkest studio. They are so bright that early models actually blinded actors, giving them a condition called actinic conjunctivitis, or ‘Klieg eye.’
Don Pocher
KNOW your way around Cape May? Think of yourself as the observant type? Feast your eyes on the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Dan Mathers. If you think you know what this cute little shop is, then you have a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter – follow the instructions carefully. And, don’t worry if you have never used Facebook before – it’s easy! Just ask your six-yearold nephew. To enter, look for the mystery photo at www.facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!
Random Fact Of The Week
CHARLIE Chaplin’s movie Limelight, which was produced in 1952, won an Academy Award 20 years after its first release. At the time, a movie could not be nominated until it played in Los Angeles. When it finally played there in 1972, it won for Best Dramatic Score.
Fortune Cookie Of The Week J This is a great day to handle those real estate matters! J ONCE a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with an two orders of broccoli and chicken. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editors
C
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
APE May goes global... that was the exciteable headline sent out by the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Cape May this week as they celebrated a new initiative which is an excellent idea, and an all-too-rare example of what happens when local organizations get together and talk in a positive way about how to take this town forward. The chamber has made a smart move that will potentially bring many, many thousands of new visitors to Cape May. Following in the footsteps of places like Atlantic City, Philadelphia, Princeton and Wilmington, Delaware, the chamber has sponsored the city’s destination page on the wildly popular TripAdvisor website. This opportunity was made possible by a collaborative effort between the chamber, the city’s Tourism Commission, and the Cape May County Department of Tourism. What this means is that the chamber will be able to place very specific (and helpful) information on the website, which will be seen by millions of visitors all over the world. The chamber will, in essence, have control over the most popular tourists’ website in the world. Or, at least, the part of their site that pertains to Cape May. In 2010 our city was named a TripAdvisor Travelers Choice winner as one of the best beach and sun destinations. This year, say the chamber, “Travel trends show that 90% of US travelers plan to take two or more trips this year, and will use online resources to research travel destinations. The Chamber of Commerce of Greater Cape May and its business partners plan to create a greater online visibility so we can compete with other destinations for the travel and tourism dollars, which are crucial for Cape May’s continued success.
“Using the latest technology, along with various social media sites we are targeting a larger audience. These are potential visitors from around the corner or around the world, and with cooperative marketing we can focus on making Cape May their destination of choice.” Amen to that. And kudos to chamber president, John Cooke, and his team. I also want to belatedly shout out that John was the man who suggested I organize a Burns Supper for Cape May. I’d always vaguely thought it was my own idea, but John politely reminded me, as we ate haggis at the last Burns Supper, that it was HIS idea, and that I’d actually written a column six years ago, mentioning his input. So I just thought I would mention it again. Now you can shut up, John. A FEW people have mentioned to me in the last couple weeks that we have a lot of estrogen in the pages of Exit Zero, but not a lot of testosterone. They pointed to the dating column, the waitress column, the agony aunt column, all written by women. Where is the man stuff, they asked? They’ve got a point. I mean, The Old Fogey is written by a man, but that’s just so weird it doesn’t even count.
Ditto this column. And so I’m happy to say that, by pure coincidence, I received an email the other day from a man who I have long been asking to write a regular column for this peppy periodical. He has bags of writing talent and the kind of grumpily observant mindset that often produces good copy. And guess what... he wrote to me suggesting a dating column. It’s a great idea – each week, our man (let’s call him Everett Chance) takes a lady to dinner in a Cape May restaurant and then writes about the results in our magazine. I love it. It’s good for Everett’s social life, good for local restaurants, and good for you (because it will be very entertaining). The only limitation Everett is putting on his potential dinner partners is that they live in the area and are aged 30-45. So if you know someone who would be interested, or if you ARE someone who is interested, drop me a note (jack@exitzero.us) and I will pass the details on to Everett. And speaking of new columns, check out our wickedly entertaining new city council column on page 33 –I think you’ll like it. FINALLY, very belated congratulations to Victor and Alicia Grasso, who brought a beautiful baby into the world on 1/1/11... an appropriately dramatic entrance for a kid who I’m sure is going to be something special (if her parents are anything to go by). Even her name is special... Gray Grasso. I love it. I haven’t seen as much of the Grasso family as I would like, due to the biggest ever workload our little company has ever contended with (including the upcoming launch of an EZ-style publication in West Chester, PA!), but hopefully that will change soon. Enjoy your week...

LCMR senior guard Ernie Harper is Exit Zero’s Athlete of the Week. He recently led LCMR in scoring wins over Hammonton and Mainland. This 18-year-old athlete (who has been playing basketball since he could walk) is a proven hard worker. Harper refers to himself as “a Swiss army knife that does it all.” He has been in the varsity rotation all of his four year at LCMR, and he says that before he graduates he wants a state title. As far as his most memorable moment in his playing career goes, Harper claims that it hasn’t happened yet. He is hungry for post-season success. Harper lives in Erma and is the son of Ernest and Lisa Harper. His brother and sisters show a similar dedication to athletics. Lamar, 27, participated in football, track, wrestling and basketball during his time at LCMR, while his sister Tina, 26, ran track and played basketball. His youngest sister, Elisa, 11, is an aspiring soccer player. Colleges who are recruiting Harper include Widener University, Dickinson College and North Carolina Central University, but Harper is unsure of his plans to play basketball at the collegiate level. He is very concentrated on getting a great college education, even if it means giving up the sport he loves. Harper hopes people remember him and his basketball legacy long after he leaves the court at LCMR. “I want to be remembered as winner who was never afraid.” PHOTOGRAPH AND STORY BY CONNOR MAGEE

MANDARIN SALMON AWARD-WINNING WINE LIST
Oscar stands in front of the cabinets and wall he built for the Exit Zero Store and Gallery... just a few examples of his fine work. Name: Oscar Nuñez. Workplace: Self-employed. Age: Forty-two. Hometown: It’s a long name – La Hacienda, Oaxaca, Mexico. How long have you been in the United States? About 20 years. How long have you worked in carpentry? Five years. What did you do before that? I worked in restaurants like Henry’s on the Beach, Harpoon Henry’s and Jackson Mountain. What is the best thing about your job? Probably that I don’t have any boss who is pushing me, so I can work at my own pace. What are you best at? I try to do everything very well. What is your dream job? I would like to be an engineer. I tried to be an engineer in Mexico, but it is a long time to be in school and I did not have the money to stay in school for years. What is the best part of living in America? The reason I am here is because it is better for my family here than in Mexico, and my kids have more opportunities to be make something of themselves. What is your favorite thing about Cape May? The bars – Carney’s and Harpoon Henry’s. Interview by Dan Mathers

EVERY week our photographer Danielle O’Neal roams the streets of Cape May on a mission... to give away a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. But it’s not quite THAT easy – first of all, the lucky recipient has to answer three questions related to our theme issue, which this week is all about the Oscars. This week’s winners are Thomas Beck and Matine Cohen, 61 and 49, from Westfield, NJ. We found them strolling the Washington Street Mall. Here are their answers to our piercing questions: Who will win the Oscar for Best Movie? The King’s Speech. What was your favorite movie of last year? The King’s Speech. Have you ever owned a red carpet? Yes, we have one right now!

The Inside Scoop On City Hall
I
A user’s guide to Cape May City council meetings... by Kate Chadwick and Jon Roth
N KEEPING with our avowed mission to entertain and inform in equal measures, we proudly present a new way for you to keep up to date with the goings-on at City Hall. Disclaimer: this is not meant to trivialize the importance of such meetings – we respect and appreciate the gravity of this and all government proceedings. But at the end of the day, we all put our pants on one leg at a time (some with more successful results than others), so please enjoy our lighthearted, yet extremely useful assessment. Meeting of Cape May City Council, Tuesday, February 15... 6:57pm: Your hardboiled reporters try the front door to City Hall, then try the side door. Finally, we’re led to the OTHER side door, the secret police entrance. The press table already full, we find two adjacent seats in the back row and quickly beat a path to them. 7:00pm: Roll Call – Mayor Edward Mahaney, Deputy Mayor Jack Wichterman, council member Terri Swain, council
member Bill Murray (he’s changed so much since Caddyshack); council member Deanna Fiocca absent. Also present – City Manager Bruce MacLeod, City Attorney Tony Monzo (such a snazzy dresser – handsome, too), City Clerk Diane Weldon. 7:02pm: Pledge of Allegiance; announcement of publication of meetings in Star & Wave and Press of Atlantic City (What – no EZ?) 7:03pm: Fire Chief Jerry Inderwies, Jr presents a Meritorious Unit Citation to the Cape May Fire Company for their life-saving actions during the Merion Inn fire, attributing their success to a “quick response time.” Each fireman’s name is called and the award is given, followed by a standing ovation and two more rounds of applause. 7:08pm: Mayor Mahaney, wearing a khaki jacket and dark, diagonal-striped tie, grants a five-minute recess, because “probably everyone doesn’t want to sit through the whole meeting.” 7:09pm: Pretty much the entire packed
house of firefighter friends and families clears out. There are maybe 20 stalwarts remaining. 7:11pm: “Five-minute” recess over. (Huh? That was barely three minutes – good thing we don’t smoke anymore.) 7:13pm: Discussion to change the time of March council meeting from 7:00pm to 1:00pm. 7:14pm: Ordinances discussed, including #236-2011, which addresses capital improvements to the tune of $1.5 million, another mention of the time adjustment of the March meeting time (that’s 1:00pm on March 22, readers, not 7:00pm); and #2252011, addressing an adjustment in the late fees imposed on mercantile licenses, apparently previously a “gray area,” according to City Manager MacLeod, who is wearing a shirt in a beautiful shade of blue with a diagonal striped tie, by the way. 7:18pm: Mayor Mahaney discusses #4202-2011, which addresses the issue of

the “catastrophic billing error” of the water meter debacle and replacement of said meters; and while we’re on the topic of meters, #4302-2011, about the replacement of the parking meters with “dollar billfriendly ones,” a particular thrill to those of us who don’t stroll around town with a roll of quarters in our pocket.
Mayor Mahaney also announces that a closed council session will immediately follow the present one, to discuss the Henry’s restaurant litigation issue in an attempt to “mediate rather than litigate.” 7:20pm: Deputy Mayor Jack Wichterman, attired in a white turtleneck, argyle sweater and tweed jacket, introduces #462011, which addresses beach concessions bids on umbrellas, chairs and the like. Manager MacLeod says that the advertisement for bids would run on February 23 and March 2, with bids accepted on March 4. 7:22pm: Mayor Mahaney advises that an agreement has been reached with the owner of the Depot Market Café (we particularly enjoy the barbecued pork sandwich special) to proceed with the widening of Elmira from a one-way to a two-way street, which of course, will impact that property’s parking significantly. Mayor Mahaney also moves to omit voting on ordinance #462011 (beach boxes), and suggests voting on it separately from the present proceeding. 7:25pm: Council member
Bill Murray, sporting a light blue shirt, navy jacket, and apparently requisite diagonal striped tie, discusses clarification on the parking meters/ automatic read water meters. 7:26pm: Mayor Mahaney comments that the beach box requirement ordinance prohibits the “hawking” of food.
7:27pm: Manager MacLeod adds that this would affect “regular” zones, as opposed to the hotel zones, of which there are six. 7:28pm: Mayor Mahaney suggests that if no bid is received on a particular parcel on the appointed date, there should be no re-bidding. 7:29pm: Council member Murray offers that he does not want to vote on this – or any – ordinance that has not been put in writing in advance for the public to see, and therefore does not wish to vote on this particular ordinance tonight. (Actually, Council member Murray started to offer this opinion, but was promptly smacked down by Deputy Mayor Wichterman for talking out of turn, whereupon Murray immediately apologized before everyone got a hold of himself and they started over). 7:31pm: Attorney Tony Monzo, sharply attired in a grayish-beige suit (we couldn’t agree on the color), jumps into the fray at this point and offers to have all pertinent ordinances put into writing the next day, which seemed to mollify council member Murray. Members of the public are asked to step forward with any questions or

problems on the issue at hand. 7:32pm: Larry Hirsch, owner of the Montreal Inn, comes to the podium for the public portion of the debate, wearing an olive sweater, opencollared shirt and khakis. He remarks that the terms on these boxes have been decided “without consulting the bidders” and expresses concerns that the beach boxes won’t be allowed on hotel properties.

7:35pm: Mayor Mahaney responds sympathetically, saying that he would have preferred a sit-down meeting with prospective bidders, but alluded to the “nagging priorities” of the city in response to the ordinance not being in writing. 7:38pm: Linda Steenrod, owner of the Billmae Inn and a former deputy mayor and council member, approaches the podium in a purple cableknit turtleneck. “We share a beach box at the Montreal (with a neighbor), and I would like to keep it,” she says, admitting her interest is a selfish one. This elicits a chuckle. 7:40pm: A very animated council member Murray expresses that the foregoing two responses from the public were “Exhibit A” of why things need to be in writing, as the public is only able to cogently address that which they can actually see. 7:41pm: Mayor Mahaney responds a bit harshly, we thought, essentially blaming Attorney Monzo for the fact
that these things aren’t in writing. He also states that there are “five people here, five of us have to work, and all the work can’t be left to the manager.” He says that he can understand the motivation for having things in writing, as that is the way he usually likes to proceed, but that he could only ask Deputy Mayor Wichterman to withdraw the motion for now. 7:42pm: Deputy Mayor Wichterman refuses to withdraw (rather petulantly, we thought). 7:43pm: Attorney Monzo says that the beach boxes are required in regular zones, optional in hotel zones; whereupon Deputy Mayor Wichterman says that he had thought Larry Hirsch was confused but it was he himself who was confused on this issue (we were getting a bit lost at this point, too). 7:44pm: Vote taken on 46-2011; all vote yes except Murray, who abstains. 7:45pm: Another five people leave once the beach box issue is resolved, bringing the public portion of the attendees to a grand total of 12 (counting us). Make that 13, as Larry Hirsch has reentered the building. 7:46pm: City Clerk Diane Weldon reports on the reports she has received – tourism, overtime, tax collection, and the like; those are crickets you hear. 7:48pm: Council member Terri Swain (clad in basic black with pearls) makes a motion to accept these reports. 7:50pm: Mayor Mahaney asks if there is any new business. Manager MacLeod reports on the replenishment of the Cove beach, which is apparently on target to be finished by the original end date of March 1. He also mentions a special budget review meeting on February 18 at 1:00pm. He finally states that council was

7:53pm: City Clerk Weldon reports that the budget review meeting will be held on February 18 at 1:00; that the March regular council meeting will be held on March 22 at 1:00 instead of 7:00 (again with this); that the April meeting was originally scheduled for April 20, a Wednesday, because of Passover, and asked if council wanted to keep it on that date or move it back to Tuesday the 19th. She also mentioned a rabies clinic on 3/16. 7:54pm: Mayor Mahaney confirms keeping the April meeting on 4/20, since that is presumably the date that has been advertised. 7:55pm: Mayor Mahaney offers the following announcements: Arthur Henry will begin the concrete pile-driving at Convention Hall on Wednesday 2/23, and that the pilings are state-of-the-art and “should last interminably;” that the city received a letter of compliance with CAFRA permit; and he reports that, contrary to those pesky internet reports which stated Cape May was put back ON the National Historic Landmark watch list, it was never, in fact, taken off (which seems worse, but maybe that’s us), and that the city was working closely with pertinent organizations to address the issue (in an open and transpar-
ent forum). 7:57pm: Mayor Mahaney solicits comments from the public, and council is then addressed by Charles Hendricks of Trenton Avenue, wearing corduroys and maroon button-down, who approaches the podium to read aloud a letter he and five other residents (Mathew Glenn, Bernard Long, Jr, Michael Piron, James Testa and David Tornberg) submitted to the City Council addressing various budget issues. Mayor Mahaney remarks that he’s received and read the letter, commends the writers on their thoroughness and clarity (and we agree with the mayor on this), and says he spent about 20 hours researching and addressing the issues addressed in the letter. Mr Hendricks then reads the letter in its entirety. We are sure this was just a Freudian slip (Mr Hendricks seemed a little nervous), but we noticed that at 8:03pm, he mispronounced “city” as “shitty.” Mr Hendricks also emphasized his assertion that the “average city employee makes $64,000 a year, not including overtime,” which he mentions is far removed from the pay of, for example, a waitress at Lucky Bones.
8:06pm: Mayor Mahaney inquires if Mr Hendricks will be at the upcoming budget meeting (remember: Friday 2/18 at 1:00!), and when Mr Hendricks said that he would be unable to attend, the mayor asks to meet with him directly after the meeting. 8:06pm: The meeting is adjourned. People go home. Doodles by Jon Roth

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
DO miss my Oscar that never was. I remember the night it all went wrong: June 15, 1960. We had all assembled at the Beach Theatre to watch the first-ever screening of Ben Hur II, which we had shot entirely on location in Cape May. The movie was set to catapult our city to stardom, and major studios were vying for the rights to build sets here. I had set up the venture after seeing Ben Hur and thinking a) what a handsome man Charlton was, when oiled, and b) we could have done it so much better. Using my contacts in the business, some persuasion, a little blackmail and a case of Nazi gold I had liberated from The Eagle’s Nest in 1945, we assembled a cast of thousands. I of course directed and starred. Learning from the original’s faults, I cut out the religious baggage, minimized the love scenes and expanded the chariot race from a few minutes to a more impressive hour and a half. We had to make some changes, of course: there was some confusion with our order for 60 fine
Arabian stallions and instead we received 600 Shetland ponies. I had to draft in a troupe of midgets to act as body doubles and had the chariots remade as one-third scale models. This was a headache at the time, but probably just as well, as it turns out that chariots and ponies at full tilt cannot quite make the 180 degree turn at The Point that we needed, and we had a pile-up of staggering violence, with tiny wheels, little people and ponies landing everywhere.
Had that been my good self and a team of horses charging at full speed, I fear casualties would have been in the dozens. As it was, the wee animals and drivers mostly bounced onto the sand, though a few were carried off by seagulls. When the footage was edited, we had a stunning movie on our hands. Oh, there were small errors – in one scene during the race you can see an automobile drive past in the background – it was that codger Henry Ford raging at me for not having the chariots pulled by his automobiles. We had the best names from Hollywood and Cape May in town for the premiere, and judging by the gasps and silences during the screening we were assured of an Oscar. Tragically, during the final scene there was a thunderous noise and the doors burst open to admit a hundred drunken midgets on their tiny Shetland ponies. In the chaos some luminaries were trampled, a starlet was pinched on the bottom and a pony ate the only copy of the reel. That marked the end of Cape May’s movie boom and my Oscar dreams.

Customer Service
I
The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone
N THE winter months in Cape May, when the money isn’t f lowing quite as freely as it does in the summer, servers are hard-pressed for cash. Buttering up customers for bigger tips doesn’t quite cut it; we find ourselves competing for coat-check money. Normally servers avoid the host’s station at all costs. This is where guests complain about the location of their tables or the amount of time they’ve waited to be seated. But in the dead of winter, wait staff circle around this space like vultures; this is where guests will peel off their pea coats. At my restaurant, the competition for coat-check money is particularly stiff. Hosts, valets, and bartenders alike keep one eye open for customers who might be in need of a hanger. Even the Bulgarian busboys still learning the language know how to say, in perfect English, “May I hang that up for you?” Most customers, thankful to be rid of their heavy f leeces or furs, will gladly hand over a dollar or two in gratuity. But not all patrons are quite so generous. Some go to great lengths in order to
avoid dishing out that dollar. Recently, I asked a party of four, a couple and their two children, if I might take their coats. “That won’t be necessary,” the mother told me. About 20 minutes later, I caught this same woman knee-deep in outerwear, trying to hang all four jackets in the restaurant closet before anyone would notice. Other patrons choose to bring their coats and cover-ups into the dining room with them, haphazardly slinging shawls over chair backs so that, by the end of a night, I’m navigating through a minefield of fallen cashmere. Some guests carry with them a parka so big it needs a chair of its own, and a reservation for two becomes
more like a reservation for three. As I tiptoe with bowls of hot soup around rogue sleeves jetting out from underneath table linens, I find myself willing to pay customers a dollar, and not the other way around, if only they’d take advantage of our closet. There’s plenty of space in there, and there’s no risk of f lying soup if someone makes a misstep. But the thing I dread most about dealing with other people’s outerwear is helping guests back into it at the end of a meal. I will stand behind a man with his coat and, as he fishes around blindly for a sleeve with one hand, I try to meet this hand with a sleeve. This rarely ever goes smoothly, and I can’t help but feel awkward doing it. It’s not often I help grown strangers get dressed in the middle of a public space. But that’s the thing about waiting tables; the job requires wearing many hats – coat checking is just one of them. And speaking of hats, I’d be happy to hang those up for you as well the next time you come out for a meal… for the bargain price of a dollar or two, of course.

T
Wise answers to perplexing questions
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manners of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart, and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I’m sick of constantly getting flak for not being on Facebook. I have no desire to parade my private life for all the world to see, and people act like I’m confessing to kicking puppies when I say I’m not on it. What can I tell the haters who harass me? – Down With Facebook Dear Down There was a time when the Answer Lady could sympathize with you completely, dear. But that time has passed. Whenever the she hears someone swearing off Facebook, it reminds her of those who once swore off voicemail, email, and cell phones. It’s got a very cutting-off-one’snose-to-spite-one’s-face feel to it. True, there are some people who never have an unexpressed thought on Facebook, and yes, that is annoying. But the positives
outweigh the negatives – the Answer Lady is in touch with friends and relatives who otherwise would have gone by the wayside long ago. It’s also an excellent way to send a message to just about anyone in a big hurry. There are privacy controls galore, you needn’t post your picture and you know what? If you find that it’s really, truly not for you, THEN you simply close your account. It’s what the Answer Lady tells her little ones all the time: you can’t say you don’t like something until you’ve actually tried

it. Like broccoli. And if you do try it, don’t forget to friend Exit Zero! Dear Answer Lady I got a Facebook friend request from a former flame. We ended amicably, but it was such a significant and long-term relationship that I hesitate to re-establish contact. What to do? – Friend Fear Dear Friend There is too much missing here for the Answer Lady to make an accurate appraisal of the situation. Primarily, are either or both of you married or otherwise – uh – romantically encumbered? And if the answer is no to both, what are you afraid of, exactly? The Answer Lady’s knee-jerk reaction is that if you were meant to be friends, you already would be “real” friends. If you have enough distance from the relationship and enough in common that you could be friends, then what’s the harm? By the way, if you decide against it, this is not a case where you should just ignore the request. Send a polite message wishing the person well and decline.

Activity Of The Week
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: The Kids Can! Expo at the Cape May City Elementary School.
H
ERE’S the thing about the Nature Center of Cape May – the folks over there raise questions you didn’t think you cared about. Then, you find yourself intrigued. What WOULD I eat if I had to survive outdoors here? What are those tiny critters scrabbling back under the sand after each wave hits the beach? What does that fish eat? And does kissing a horseshoe crab really bring you luck? Come to Kids Can! and find out. The Nature Center of Cape May was founded in 1992 and became associated with New Jersey Audubon in 1995. Its mission is to provide environmental education, encourage stewardship of natural areas and promote volunteerism. I’ve been a fan since about 1998, when it was housed in one small building and bursting with programs for kids. My squeamish children met all kinds of critters, and learned to love the seashore in a way I could not – okay, would not – have taught. Now the Nature Center has a full-fledged environmental education campus, and the programs just keep getting

better. As the Nature Center grows, its reach expands, and more and more children – and adults – are learning to look at Cape May from the sand up. Nature is not sleeping in winter, and neither is the Nature Center. Their Kids Can! Expo is scheduled for Sunday, February 27, from 11am to 4pm at the Cape May City Elementary School, 921 Lafayette Street. Tickets are $6 (and they’re free if you are under three years old). Kids Can!

celebrates nature with live animals, a variety of entertainment, and some oldfashioned fun. The entire community seems to get involved, especially teenagers, who will shatter your stereotypes as they share their love of nature with younger kids. There really is something for everyone – fans of the film Standing Ovation can see the Joanne Reagan Dancers perform. Others can get in the mood for St Patrick’s Day watching dancers from the Gibson School of Irish Dance. Feeling crafty? You can get your hands dirty. Or you can just eat. And, if you don’t like any of these activities, then take a hike! No, really, you can walk the Cape Island Creek Nature Trail with naturalist Sue Slotterback. Come to the Kids Can! Expo to renew your appreciation for nature – it’s been a challenging winter, after all. A little skinto-fin contact will get you ready for spring. And, though I don’t know why kissing a horseshoe crab is supposed to bring you seven years of good luck, what have you got to lose? Next week: Crafts and Antiques in Winter

2/10: Complimentary Spaghetti Dinner At Cape May Elementary
ÂŤ
This idea started last year as a way for the school to give back to the people in town who volunteer their time and talents to the kids. The event is paid for by the teachers and staff of Cape May City Elementary, and the auditorium was transformed into a restaurantlike atmosphere by Mrs Tarr and Mrs Leonard. The staff cooked and served dinner and everyone pitched in to clean up! The groups working with the students include the police and fire departments, Kiwanis, MAC, Garden Club, US Coast Guard, Sturdy and PNC Banks, and City Hall. Volunteer of the Year was Kiwanis Club.

Bird Droppings
I
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
’M HERE to do you a great big favor. I’m going to sell you a binocular. Now, you may protest that you’ve already got a binocular. I’m sure you do. Most people do. Binoculars that sit in some closet and haven’t seen the light of day since they were given to you by someone who didn’t know what the heck to buy. Binoculars so old that there is mold growing in the barrels. Binoculars so gimmick-ridden and poorly designed that they should be illegal. With spring nearly upon us, it’s time to ditch the instrument that is keeping you from buying a binocular that really works. Visit the Cape May Bird Observatory and see what you’ve been missing. Literally. There is a great, big beautiful world out there just packed with wonders that you are probably missing. Binoculars are your portal to that world. “How much?” How much are you missing? Lots. How much do they cost? Not lots. For under $100 you can buy a binocular
that really, really works. A binocular with a commendable image, generous field of view, nimble focus, close focus capability, lightweight and with a decent warranty. You can also spend $100 and buy a binocular that stinks but... why would an organization that is trying to bring you to supernatural intimacy with the natural world want to sell you a lousy binocular? It
only makes our job harder. First, go into the CMBO store and you will be looking at the finest selection of quality optics this side of New York and Washington DC. In fact, people are willing to drive three, even four hours to buy their binoculars at our store. That’s because the CMBO knows what it’s talking about. $100! That’s less than dinner for two at one of Cape May’s better restaurants. It’s less than a concert ticket. It’s... Just about the nicest thing you can do for yourself, since you happen to live at the epicenter of the known birding universe. Living in Cape May and not owning a decent pair of binoculars is like owning a Porsche and not knowing how to drive. “But,” you’re thinking, “I’m sure that the binoculars I have are just fine.” Maybe they are. Bird Droppings ? From Page 71 no then you need to know that binoculars are instruments that are intended to be used outdoors and sometimes it rains out there. Plus, since you live in Cape May you are probably going to be on or near the water at some point and it would be nice to have those binoculars to watch the dolphins and other things. Are they “No Focus” or “Insta-Focus” binoculars? If so, then you have a binocular that is designed to make your eyes do all the work (and tire out very quickly). Do they have orange or red lenses? Then they turn the whole world green when you look through them. The problem with binoculars is that most are designed for one reason. That is to get you to buy them. Seriously. The manufacturers don’t give a damn whether you use them. They just want you to buy them. So if you want a binocular that really works where it is designed to be used (outdoors), then your first step is to step indoors – at the CMBO store. There’s no harm in just looking. No charge, either. So head over to the Cape May Bird Observatory at 701 East Lake Drive, over-

The center is open from 9:30am to 4:30pm daily except Tuesdays through the end of February. Our staff are always glad to help with anything you need, even things you didn’t know you needed yet. Get your hands (and eyes) around a pair of binoculars that you can really enjoy. Take them out on the deck, enjoy the fit and feel, try different makes and models – it’s a lot like test driving a car. While you are there, pick up the schedule of daily walks,

The Movie Column
I
Tom Sims, Director of the Cape May Film Festival, gives his Oscar picks
T’S a first! For the first time in my life, I have actually seen all of the movies nominated for Best Picture. And that’s even after the Academy began nominating 10 (not five) movies for Best Picture – no doubt in an attempt to get more people to the box office. How else can you explain some of the selections for that coveted aforementioned category this year? My favorites (in order from most favorite): Toy Story 3, True Grit, Winter’s Bone, The Fighter, and The King’s Speech. The rest of the films (although some are good) aren’t worthy to be on the ballot. What’s that? Am I saying that the film you loved so much doesn’t deserve to be on the ballot? That’s exactly what I’m saying. The Academy should have kept the category to five selections (the five I’ve noted, of course), and given the other films a nomination in some other category. That’s the way it has been done for years. The Kid’s Are All Right was just alright. 127 Hours was good, but felt a little like it lasted exactly that long. Inception — should have just made it for Xbox 360 and called it a day. The Social
With so many contenders for Best Picture, it can be hard to separate the winner from the filler Network… a good film, but a Best Picture? And Black Swan – what was THAT all about? For what it’s worth, here are my picks. And believe me, I have no delusions that any of my picks will win: Best Picture: Toy Story 3; Best Direction: True Grit; Best Actor: Jeff Bridges (True Grit); Best Actress: Natalie

Portman (Black Swan) or Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone); Supporting Actor: Christian Bale (The Fighter); Supporting Actress: Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit). So write me back if you disagree, or better still, come out and vote! The Cape May Film Society is hosting our annual Oscar party — but this year there is a twist. This year’s party will happen right before the Oscars, Sunday February 27, from 5:30 to 8pm at the Mad Batter Restaurant, 19 Jackson Street. And there is one more thing – the party is free. In the past this event has been a hot ticket at a high price, but economic times being what they are, we decided the most important part of this get-together is just that: getting together and casting your vote. So pick your favorite for best movie, actor, and actress. We’ll count the votes and find out Cape May’s favorites. Plus there will be a chance to win prizes if your favorites win. A special thanks to Mark and Pam at Mad Batter for hosting this event for us. No reservations needed. Questions can be sent to capemayfilm@hotmail.com or you can call 609-884-6700.

The Dating Column
T
Stella Dixon’s take on romance on old Cape Island
HE week of February 14th, I received an email from Spirit Airlines encouraging me to go south for VD. At first, I felt shocked that an airline would advocate for venereal disease. Then I realized that Valentine’s Day was approaching. Later on, while listening to Delilah’s love show, I listened as a distraught caller lamented the fact that her daughter, who’d just moved out, would not be home for the upcoming holiday. President’s Day? I wondered. Nope. Valentine’s Day. On the 13th, I went out to dinner at the Harbor View with a friend. The hostess handed me a red carnation. “What is this for?” I asked. She looked at me as though I’d asked what my right arm is for. “Right,” I said, rolling my eyes, “VD.” Valentine’s Day, I started to realize, is a much bigger deal than I’d assumed. I’d been forgetting about it all week long, and yet the 14th seemed front and center in the minds of everyone around me. I wondered when this holiday began trumping Mother’s Day and Earth Day and National Battery
Appreciation Day and any number of other equally worthy, less anticipated days. The following morning, I went to the grocery store to buy a cake for a friend’s birthday. On top of the cake was a giant “27.” “Oh, how nice,” the woman at the checkout counter said, “to celebrate Valentine’s Day with a cake.” “I don’t really celebrate Valentine’s Day,” I said. “This is for a birthday.” She raised an eyebrow, as though she didn’t believe what
I was saying. “That’s why there’s a giant 27 here,” I said. The woman was silent. I tried again. “My friend is turning 27 today.” “Well,” she said, “Have a happy Valentine’s Day.” In the past, I’d felt lucky to be above the hubbub of a Hallmark holiday. But now, confronted with the confusion of the Acme check-out girl, I started to wonder if there wasn’t something wrong with me. Perhaps I should be embracing red carnations, sappy love shows, and the idea of a Valentine’s Day cake. Perhaps, I thought, I shouldn’t be such a cynical single who can’t see the value in a day designated for love. Then the couple behind me picked up a heart-shaped balloon with a cartoon face from a table of gifts. Perhaps I should be buying a heart-shaped balloon, too, I thought. Just when I started to envy all the women receiving plastic hearts on this holiday, the balloon behind me started singing a scratchy, high-pitched cover of “Unchained Melody.” I paid for my not-for-Valentine’sDay cake feeling reassured; there really is nothing wrong with wanting to be VD-free.
