The Police Blotter

LUNDAR, Canada – A man was warned by a police dipsatcher after repeatedly making numerous groundless calls to 911 that the next one he made could very well land him in a jail. “If you’re coming to get me,” the man told the dispatcher, “can you bring me some smokes?”

Classic Quotations

A Story From The Past “There are no more committed people on the planet than surfers. We fall down a lot, turn around, paddle back out, and do it over again. Unlike anything else in life, the stoke of surfing is so high that the failures quickly fade from memory.” Gary Sirota “It looks easy, like surfing, but surfing is hard too.” George Eads “Then, after I’ve gotten rid of Batman and Robin for good, I will rule the waves. Me, the Joker, king of the surf and all the surfers. Then, Gotham City! Later, the world!” The Joker “None but natives ever master the art of surfbathing thoroughly.” Mark Twain “You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf. ” Jon Kabat-Zinn

In 1926, Colonel Jesse Rosenfeld took on the challenge of establishing a ferry service across the Delaware Bay, hoping to arrange three former warships in a Y formation for use as docks. That never happened once fate intervened by way of a powerful storm. The SS Atlantus was ripped from its moorings off Cape May Point and entrenched in a deep sand bar. Once the rains died down, numerous attempts were made to free the Atlantus, but it failed to budge even an inch. Ben Miller

Facebook Mystery Contest

Weird Word Of The Week

BARNWALLER – This is a slang term used by surfers to refer to a “kook” (also a slang term for a surfing beginner), or someone who has poor surfing style, or a surfer who does not possess knowledge of proper surfing etiquette. It would be used thusly in a sentence: “That guy is really barnwalling down the line there.”

KNOW your way around Cape May? Think of yourself as the observant type? Feast your eyes on the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Kate Chadwick. If you think you know what establishment you’re staring at, then you have a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter – follow the instructions carefully. And, don’t worry if you have never used Facebook before – it’s easy! Just ask your six-year-old nephew for help. To enter, look for the mystery photo at facebook.com/ exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

Random Fact Of The Week

It is possible to surf on a river. There are some rivers which, at certain times of the year, create a backflow, making waves in one spot. These waves are known as tidal bores, and surfers can ride these river waves. One such river is the Severn in England, which is also the longest river in Great Britain.

Fortune Cookie Of The Week J “Remember, after rain there’s always sunshine. ” J Once a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with Kung Pao chicken. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editors

L

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

AST year we wrote about the idiotic “Best Places to Live” rankings published by New Jersey Monthly magazine. Using data taken from eight categories, the magazine ranked Cape May the 390th best place to live, out of the state’s 566 municipalities. By their figures, our genteel city was the 20th most crime-ridden place in the state. At the time, we chatted with Cape May police chief Diane Sorentino, who said that the figures took into account crimes such as reports of a bike theft, or a bag stolen from the beach, or even an argument outside a bar, assuming that these matters were reported to the police, of course. And given that Cape May’s population grows by a factor of maybe 20-fold in the summer, you can see how twisted these figures would be. So, how did Cape May do in the latest rankings? Well, the magazine, no doubt stung by criticisms of their methodology last year, apparently refined their information gathering. As a result, our city rocketed from 390th place to the heady heights of 251st. Hmmm. How about those crime figures? Still pretty high. Last year, Cape May had a reported crime rate of 60.9 out of 1,000. This year, it is down to 56.4. But, still, the magazine clearly isn’t taking account of the population explosions in resort towns. Which is, how shall we put this… asinine. As for other, more accurate statistics… the average home price fell from $575,000 in 2007 to $550,000 last year, a drop of 4.3%, which was better than around 400 of the 500 municipalities ranked, while property taxes rose by 17.9% (from $3,308 to $3,891)in those three years, which was higher than around 400 other municipalities. Lower Township came in at number 306,

the driver didn’t see the boy, and had Geoff not signaled the driver just in time, the child would have become a “grill ornament.” It’s one thing to be in the right place at the right time, but it’s quite another to have the presence of mind to act immediately. School is in session – watch out for wee ones. As those of us who love Cape May already know, one of the things that sets our delightful town apart from those other shore towns is just how “year-round” it is (okay – nearly year-round – January and February are a mite quiet). For instance, Cape May Stage have three more top-notch productions between now and the end of the year, along with some special one-off performances that always attract big-name stars. Kate McCauley Hathaway will star in a cabaret performance entitled Blue Plate Special on September 19. The program, which includes various food-friendly songs in honor of Cape May Forum, will include guest appearances by Roy Steinberg and Marlena Lustik. If you’re yearning for a taste of New York while still keeping things strictly Jersey, don’t miss Jarrod Spector’s performance of Minor Fall, Major Lift, a collection of his favorite songs ranging from Bobby Darrin to Led Zeppelin. Jarrod plays the part of Frankie Valli in the Broadway production of Jersey Boys, and is in town for a single show on September 26. Speaking of theater, East Lynne Theater Company will reprise Helpful Hints, written by and starring our friend Susan Tischler, for two nights on Friday and Saturday, September 16 and 17, 8pm at The First Presbyterian Church, 500 Hughes Street. The play is an adaptation of a household tips and advice tome published in 1916, and it’s very, very funny.

³

with an increase of 8% in average property taxes (from $2,622 to $2,831), and a crime rate that was less than half of Cape May’s, but a violent crime rate that was more than nine times higher than Cape May’s (1.2 per 1,000, compared with 0.2). Property prices fell from $243,700 to $216,000, a drop of 11.4%. Neither West Cape May nor Cape May Point made the list this year, as it was limited to cities with populations of at least 1,500. Wildwood finished at 461 on the list, sunk by a property price decline of 27.9% and a violent crime rate of 11.4 per 1,000 people, which was the ninth highest in the state. Don’t go over that bridge, folks… here’s a cautionary tale. We heard from Geoff Johnson, best known to food-lovers near and far as the chef at Copperfish restaurant on Broadway, who became a hero last Saturday when a 10-yearold boy was nearly hit by a truck before his eyes. According to Geoff, the kid was one of two boys skateboarding near the intersection of Congress Street and Broadway when a truck took the corner “NASCAR-style,”barreling down on the child. The boy didn’t see the truck,

Every week our photographer Danielle O’Neal roams the streets of Cape May on a mission... to give away a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. But it’s not quite THAT easy – first, the lucky recipient has to answer three questions related to our issue theme, which this week is all about surfing. This week’s winner is Brett Levine, 6, a student from Livingston, New Jersey. We found Brett strolling the Washington Street Mall. Here are his answers to our piercing questions: In surfing, what does “hang ten” mean? Hanging ten toes off the surfboard. When a wave totally surrounds you when surfing it is called being...? Barreled This all-American heartthrob is considered the world’s most successful surfer. Keanu Reeves Brett wins a $50 gift certificate to Cappy’s Seaside Pizza and Steaks for answering our questions. Congratulations and enjoy! PHOTOGRAPH BY Danielle o’neal

It’s All About The Light

F

Stan Sperlak’s new exhibition opens at SOMA NewArt Gallery this Saturday

EW artists in the area capture the rich colors and varied textures of the South Jersey landscape as aptly as Stan Sperlak. A pastel artist residing in Cape May Court House, Sperlak works on rough and smooth paper and boards to create compelling views of sights many of us take for granted – golden marshes, seaside sunsets and solitary farmhouses on country roads. Prepare to reexamine those familiar sights this Saturday, September 10, when Sperlak’s new show, entitled “All About The Light” goes up in SOMA NewArt Gallery, located in Carpenter’s Square Mall. That evening there will be an artist’s reception from 6 to 9pm, where guests will enjoy light refreshments, music, and the chance to chat with Sperlak about his methods and inspiration. “My personal love of the skies, marshes, oceans and fields of Southern New Jersey are timeless subject material, very satisfying for me and changing constantly,” the artist says. For Sperlak, his love of the land transcends the canvas – he also holds

Stan Sperlak’s “Cedars” illustrates the variety of texture available when using pastels. a degree in landscape architecture and owns Cape Shore Gardens, a nursery and landscaping company in Cape May Court House. He’s as comfortable working the land as he is painting it. In addition to South Jersey landscapes, several of the pieces on exhibit were

produced in the Isle of Skye, in Scotland, where Sperlak recently taught a master class. Stop by and take a look at some familiar views and a few far-flung scenes. SOMA NewArt Gallery is located in Carpenter’s Square Mall, 31 Perry Street. For details, call 609-898-7488.

Ten Days Of Food For Thought

C

Celebrity chefs, alternative farmers and authors converge for a week of culinary conversation

alling all foodies: Cape May Forum invites you to learn, talk, get inspired and be challenged while exploring one of the critical issues of our era: what we eat. Building on the success of last year’s program, Cape May Forum: Chautauqua At The Shore has centered their activities and events around one theme. The ten-day event is titled “Guess What’s Coming To Dinner? – The Politics of Food in the 21st Century.” It will run on weekends between September 15 and 25, supplemented during the week with additional programing. With a topic like that, ten days hardly seem enough to cover everything, but the folks at CMF have arranged an impressive schedule, including demonstrations with Aaron McCargo, who won The Next Food Network Star, a keynote address from Amy Cotler, a chef, food advocate and author of The Locavore Way, and a panel discussion with Joel Salatin, owner of Polyface Farm, who was featured prominently in Michael Pollan’s Omnivore’s Dilemma.

Beyond the impressive guest speakers, the Forum has organized workshops with plenty of local organizations, including the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities, Cape May Stage, Cape May Film Festival, the Cape May Bird Observatory, Historic Cold Spring Village,

Nature Center of Cape May, the Center for Community Arts and Naval Air Station Wildwood. Wondering what birding, military aircraft, filmmaking and theater have to do with food? Well, sign up for the workshops and we know you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Why food, and why Cape May? If you haven’t already heard, our port is ranked the fourth largest fishing port in the nation, and the second largest on the East Coast. New Jersey is, after all, the Garden State, and our county’s home to plenty of rich farmland. As if all this weren’t enough, the Cape May Food & Wine Festival will run concurrent to the Cape May Forum event – ensuring that when this week is over, we will all have to hit the gym. The Forum runs from September 15 through September 25, and official scheduled programming falls Friday through Sunday of both weekends. To register for the Forum and learn more, visit capemayforum. org, email info@capemayforum.org, or call 609-770-2626.

Definitely not just your grandmother’s tearoom! Sure, you’ll find tasty tea sandwiches, freshly-baked scones and teabreads served with clotted cream, and that traditional, elegant service that you associate with fine dining. But there is so much more to The Carriage House. In addition to our traditional Tea Luncheon and Afternoon Tea, The Carriage House offers hearty fare from the café menu, plus homemade soups, and hearty wholesome entrée salads that fill you up while still letting you feel virtuous for eating a salad.

So try it today, and bring grandmom along, too…. She’ll love you for it!

Customer Service

I

The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone

f I had high school to do over, I would care much less about doing it for the first time and more about being a kid. If I had my childhood to do over, I surely wouldn’t swallow that handful of pennies just to see what would happen. If I had last week to do over, I would definitely fill up my tank as soon as that little gas light came on. I suspect that most people who look back on their lives through the lens of experience would change a thing or two. One of my dearest friends regrets the puffy wedding dress she picked out in the ’80s. She also regrets the puffy man she picked out in the ’80s, but that’s neither here nor there. The point is, regrets are a part of life. We are so afraid of regret, we sometimes have trouble making any decisions at all. Even something as inconsequential as picking out a dinner entree can straitjacket us. I like to call those people who are afraid to commit to a meal the “I’ll do” people. These folks never say “Maybe I’ll have the salad.” Instead, they say, “Maybe I’ll do the salad,” as though ordering dinner is “doing” something of any consequence. “Do” the

wrong thing, and you will spend the rest of the evening remorseful. Standing by the side of an “I’ll do” guy, I’ll hear, “I think I’ll do oysters. Or perhaps I’ll do clams. I could always do pasta. But I might just do pork.” I understand the importance of making thoughtful decisions, but come on. If it takes you this long to decide on the appetizer you’d like to “do,” how long does it take to decide on something that actually matters, like the people you would like to, well, do? Dealing with customer regret is a big part of my job. No matter how carefully some “I’ll do” guests may deliberate, by the time they get dinner, they’re already wish-

ing they’d ordered something else. I can sympathize with this kind of regret; I was, after all, the kid known for eating pocket change. All I ask is that my guests don’t polish off their halibut entrees prior to sending them back. If you’d rather “do” another dish, that’s on you and you should have told me an hour ago. Or, better yet, stick with your original decision; no regrets. The point is, there’s really no use sitting around wondering how you’d do things differently a second time around, because in real life, you only go around once. Whether you’re “doing” an appetizer at a restaurant, or your high school crush for the very first time, regrets are inevitable. But if you’re going to commit, then you might as well commit fully. You can’t avoid mistakes, no matter how hard you try, so you might as well own them. So go ahead. Swallow the pennies, wear that ugly pink wedding dress, and order the wrong thing for dinner. Just make sure you hold your head high afterwards. Because in the dining room and outside of it, there are no do-overs.

The Answer Lady

T

Wise answers to perplexing questions

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady My otherwise-great neighbor has been ribbing me for evacuating with my wife and kids during Hurricane Irene. He ‘stuck it out,’ and, because it kind of fizzled, he makes some kind of crack about ‘wimping out’ every time he sees me. I know it will stop eventually on its own (at least I think it will), but in the meantime what can I say when he starts with this? – Nice Guy Neighbor Dear Nice Ugh. It always distresses the Answer Lady to hear tales of neighbors being less than neighborly. After all, unless one lives on an estate of some sort, we are all sort of stuck with one another. Your neighbor is being out of line, not to mention childish with this schoolyard behavior. Your decision to leave your home could not have been an easy one (and the Answer Lady knows this

all too well, because backing out of her own driveway the day she evacuated was among the hardest things she’s ever done), but it was your decision and as such, is not really any of his business. Unless, of course, you got out of dodge leaving your trash cans, trampolines, and lawn gnomes as ready projectiles aimed right at his house. The fact that the hurricane ‘fizzled,’ as you so aptly put it, was the luck of the draw, and you made your decision based on what you were told, regardless of the somewhat hysterical nature of the informa-

tion. As long as you are at peace with what you did (and the condition of your yard when you did it), ignore his barbs and change the subject. Perhaps something along the lines of “You’re right, George – it was all for nothing. But if it had turned out to be another Katrina, we would definitely have attended your funeral.” Dear Answer Lady My mom insists on shopping at yard sales all the time, and it’s embarrassing to me that she buys us all this used stuff. She tells me I don’t understand because I’m young (I’m 16), but I still think it’s gross. What do you think? – Cluttered Dear Cluttered Most clichés have basis in fact, and ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure’ is an excellent example. The Answer Lady knows several yard sale fanatics, and they come across some amazing finds. If you are concerned about surrounding yourself exclusively with shiny new things, the Answer Lady will assume you have a job and can purchase them yourself. Just don’t buy anything you wouldn’t mind losing in a hurricane.

Chance Meetings

F

Everett Chance wines and dines Cape May’s single ladies

lexibility is crucial. Plans change. Hurricanes happen. My friends Kris and Rob ended a very lengthy engagement on August 27 by finally getting married. You remember August 27, the day Irene blew into town. But really, like a hurricane, this story begins farther away and a bit earlier. Somehow I’ve never managed a getaway weekend with a woman. And since I wasn’t going to know another soul at the wedding (besides the happy couple), bringing a date seemed like a good solution. A weekend in the Big Apple – see a show, do some shopping, go to a wedding. A simple plan. The kind that rarely work. It’s probably for the best that Charlene was busy. She liked my plan, she just wasn’t available to be part of it. And that’s when the plan started to unravel. With no date, I shortened the trip from two nights to one. Called the dogsitter, wrapped the wedding gift, packed a bag. Which is when the mandatory evacuation order came down. The dogsitter bailed out. The bride moved the wedding ahead a few hours.

Roads closed. I diverted to Philadelphia. My sister kept my dog (that’s another story), I got back on the road and headed up the turnpike. The wedding went off without a hitch, the groom holding an umbrella and the bride wearing pink galoshes to match her dress. Unfortunately, about half the guests didn’t show, which meant that everyone got to take home leftover food. I spent the night in the hotel, blissfully unaware of the carnage outside. But in the

morning, the road was underwater. I took another route, went the extra miles, and still had to drive through bumper-deep water four times, beneath half-fallen trees twice, and criss-crossed the Delaware three times to get back to Philly. I admire a woman who doesn’t fluster when things are blowing up around her. But this would’ve been a serious test for Charlene. A simple weekend turned into a multi-city road trip with most of the fun parts removed, a couple of life-risking moments, and a test of navigation skills. I’m not cruel enough to submit anyone to a test like that. As for Kris and Rob, any marriage that begins as an eye of calm amidst a hurricane has a strong foundation. Let’s make dinner plans and stick to them. Send an email to info@exitzero. us, I’ll be in touch, and we’ll dine at one of the Cape’s fine restaurants. Afterwards I’ll write all about it, a combined date and restaurant review. Your name will be changed, the restaurant’s won’t. We don’t have to wait for the power to go out to dine by candlelight.

In the fall of 2001 I was told that I may never walk again. I am so grateful for the wonderful doctors and technology that have given me my life back. Others are not as fortunate. After my injury I researched different charities dedicated to spinal cord awareness. As an avid surfer, I was particularly interested in the Life Rolls On Foundation (www.liferollson.org). Life Rolls On (LRO) is a non-profit 501(c)3 Foundation that exists to be a grassroots resource and an advocate on behalf of young people who have sustained a spinal cord injury (SCI). Their tagline, “Instilling in people that life with SCI does indeed roll on.”

8/25: The Mid-Atlantic $500,000 Tournament At Canyon Club

«

Participants at The MidAtlantic $500,000 fishing tournament, always a big deal here in Cape May, hauled in some serious fish as well as some very serious prize money, despite being derailed by that pesky Hurricane Irene on the final day of the contest. The aptly named Lady Luck V, which was registered to Steve Ramsey, took the top prize of $615,484.65, with a monster 82-pound white marlin (and yes, that prize number does contain the correct amount of digits). Even the ‘smallest’ prize, for a not-sosmall 58-pound tuna, which was claimed by Jim Foulke and the crew of Trust Me Too, netted $8,146.67. We’re starting to think we’re in the wrong business around here at Exit Zero Global Headquarters, but just the same, we’re glad everyone is safe and that Irene didn’t spoil all the fun. Congratulations all around for a job well done. The Greaseband PHOTOGRAPH BY aleksey moryakov... TO ORDER COPIES, PLEASE CALL (609) 770-8479

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

despair at modern surf boards. Light, sleek, strong, buoyant – really, why not just float your favorite armchair into the ocean and bob around in it for an hour? In MY day, the point of surfing was to spit in the teeth of Mother Nature, widdle in the open mouth of Danger and laugh foolishly at the Gods. AND to kill all competition to rule the waves. Our boards were made of teak and usually edged with razor-sharp coral shards, or simply, razor-sharp razors, and the fins had an edge you could shave with. Some particularly competitive surfers had concealed harpoon guns in the nose of their board, and I myself had an ingenious harness arrangement that allowed me to snag a shark as I waited for a wave in the deep water, and keep it under my board as I caught a wave: to all intents it looked as if I was being stalked by the beast, and was only inches from death, whilst all my rivals within range were tragically eaten along the way. And our contests were more exciting, too: I remember for the tenth (and final)

Cape May King Of The Waves contest we were anxious that the waves might be less than stellar, and my usual Plan B of having the Battleship Mississippi shell the coastline with her 16-inch guns to create waves, was scuppered by interfering local authority busybodies on the grounds that the previous year a stray shell had taken out a busload of Wildwooders being repatriated against their wishes. So, in the dead of night I had Kitchener, my faithful manservant, assist me in sneak-

ing an airforce surplus Atom Bomb from the basement and depositing it via rowboat a few hundred yards off The Point with an alarm clock as a timer. Sure enough, on the day of the finals we were not having much fun, and spectators and competitors alike were drifting off. In the nick of time, the bomb went off, and it sent a 300-foot wave towards shore. Well, you never saw such a wave: sheer as a glass mountain, moving like an express train and glowing like a firefly. I caught it perfectly and swear I could see Ireland on the horizon. Down below, I saw my rivals crushed like bugs, and I reached the shore whooping in triumph. Unfortunately, by the time I managed to get off the wave I was in Long Island, and I believe the judges and spectators were carried as far as DC in the north and to the outskirts of Vegas in the west, so I had no actual witnesses to my victory, as such. But to this very day, on a cloudless night, the sea has a green shimmer to it, and tiny fragments of bomb casing can still be found on the local beaches.

The Cape May Crossword

None of that generic nonsense you see in other papers... a puzzle just for “Exit Zero”! By Jon Roth So YOU love crosswords? Great. Sit down, get a cup (or glass) of your favorite beverage, relax and enjoy this puzzle. The answers to the crossword are all related to this week’s issue. Our theme this week: surfing. 16th Annual David C. Douglass, Sr. Golf Tournament & Scholarship Fund Raiser Day Sunday, October 2, 2011

This event is in memory of Officer Douglass, killed in the line of duty while protecting our community February, 18, 1994. Please let me take just a moment to tell you about Officer Douglass. He had been employed with the Lower Township Police Department, was a volunteer firefighter, a member of the S.W.A.T. Team, worked with the K-9 Units, was a firearms instructor and active in many of our local organizations. David was a remarkable man who thought nothing of taking the time to help his friends, neighbors and local children with anything that they needed. David was dispatched to a call of smoke in our local area of North Cape May on the evening of February 18, 1994. Upon arriving at the scene, he witnessed a man running from the property. He was pursuing the subject on foot, when sadly David was fired upon by the subject. David died that evening brutally and senselessly leaving behind his wife, Debbie and three children, David Jr., Cortney and Tina. We shall never forget David or the sacrifice he made for our safety. Please join us in giving back to the community in Dave’s honor. We are pleased to announce that year to date this program is responsible for over $89,000 in awarded scholarships to local students in the community.

Activity Of The Week

T

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Stand-Up Paddleboarding

HE clerk at Aqua Trails took a look at me. “SUP?” she said. “Not much,” I replied. “What’s up with you?” That’s how little I knew about the fastest growing water sport in the world. Stand-up paddleboarding, or, more familiarly, SUP, involves paddling a long, stable surfboard with a modified boat paddle. Less intimidating than regular surfing, SUP lets you catch a little aloha spirit while you vacation in Cape May. SUP is an ancient Hawaiian tradition, if “ancient” means 1960. That’s when “beach boys” – surf instructors – in Waikiki began to borrow boat paddles to go into the ocean with tourists learning to surf. Standing up, beach boys could keep an eye on the incoming waves to better instruct their students. In addition, they could keep their cameras dry and sell surfing photos to their clients. Competitive surfers took to SUP as a way to train when the surf wasn’t up, and eventually, the activity became a sport in its own right. Aqua Trails, located at the Nature Center of Cape May on Delaware Avenue, rents SUPs for $20 each. The guide will give you a brief

lesson. SUP is easy to learn but hard to do, so stick to the calm water near the Fishermen’s Memorial at first. Later, you can venture into the waves with regular surfers, or SUP around Cape May’s wild waterways. Wade into the water and climb onto the board. Start on your knees – heck, you can stay on your knees if you like. When you’re ready, stand up, feet

hip distance apart, toes facing forward, knees slightly bent. Make sure to look out in front of you, not down at your feet. Paddle a few strokes on each side. When you fall off – and you probably will – try to fall to one side, not onto the board. Climb back on. I fell off several times, much to the amusement of my kids. But I also stood up, and when I did, I felt like I had hit a home run. Balancing on that board was a challenge, and it was also addictive. And the faster I went, the more stable I felt. SUP is a great full-body workout. My legs were shaking with the effort of keeping my balance. No wonder skiers and snowboarders use it as an off-season workout. Most sources say it’s suitable for kids as young as ten, although some experienced paddleboarders take even younger children along. Make sure everyone knows how to swim. Wear board shorts and a rash guard or a bathing suit. SUP is done with bare feet, but you may want to consider water shoes, as the harbor floor is full of sharp objects. Catch the aloha spirit with stand-up paddleboarding. Next week: Water Parks

Betty is a six-year-old German shepherd mix who was found wandering the streets and brought to the shelter by animal control. She has somehow managed to be a very sweet and social girl who does well with everyone she meets. She gets along with cats and dogs, and loves lots of belly rubs. All that’s missing in her life now is a family to call her own. Stop by the shelter and meet Betty today. Adoption fee is $35.

«

Jazz is an awesome six-month-old gal who is just as sweet as can be. She’s a playful, loving pup who does well with cats, dogs, and kids and gets along with everyone she meets. Because she is still a puppy, Jazz is going to need someone who can offer her the time and training she needs to flourish. With the proper training we feel she will make a great family pet. Stop by and meet her sometime soon. Adoption fee is $95.

«

Lucy is a six-year-old foxhound who was recently surrendered to our shelter because she was too much for the owner to handle. While she is a social girl, she can be anxious at times so she is going to need a calm and quiet home with someone who has the patience and time to dedicate to her. If anyone is able to offer Lucy what she needs to thrive please call the shelter for additional information. Adoption fee is $35.

his Saturday marks the final showing of Steel Magnolias. This is your final opportunity to see what the Philadelphia Inquirer calls, “a textbook example of ensemble acting.” Theatre-goers have said that this production surpasses what they had seen in New York. Indeed, the cast, featuring Tony and Emmy award winners and nominees, is extraordinary. This is the kind of work that Cape May Stage is known for doing. Coming up may just be the most exciting production of the season. New Jersey playwright William Mastrosimone has come to Cape May to “tweak” his hit play called The Woolgatherer and Cape May Stage will be producing the world premiere of this new version. Subsequent productions will use our updated script. Once again, along with our previous productions of The Little Prince and Class, the showbills of other theatres will list Cape May Stage as the home of the original show. Cape May audiences will be lucky enough to see it here first. The Woolgatherer is the perfect play for this time in our nation’s history. Though the eccentric characters of Cliff and Rose are comedic at times, this is a play that explores the potential we have to change one other’s lives. At a time when many people are being challenged economically, we see these characters living in South Philadelphia, just barely surviving. They are dreamers and it is in their dreams where they find nourishment. As an added treat, William Mastrosimone will be at the theatre

Playwright William Mastrosimone attends a dress rehearsal for The Woolgatherer, directed by Roy Steinberg. Mastrosimone has rewritten parts of his debut play for this Cape May premiere and will participate in a post-show discussion on Saturday, September 17. on Saturday, September 17 to talk with the audience about his play. He has two plays slated for Broadway and his production of Extremeties will open in London next season. Our half-price preview will be on Wednesday, September 14 and the following night is another gala opening night! Come meet the actors, designers, and director after the show and let the play be the catalyst for sharing ideas over wine and food. You’ll be nourished by more than only

dreams at our exciting parties. Speaking of nourishment, Kate McCauley Hathaway will be singing about food in Blue Plate Special on Monday, September 19. With Cape May Forum as a co-producer, Cape May Stage presents a light evening of quips and melodies centered around the theme of food. Roy Steinberg and Marlena Lustik will join Kate Hathaway in a celebration of all things gastronomic. This is sure to be silly and fun. We’ve left the serious stuff to the experts who will be lecturing on his very important topic. We supply the laughs.

Bird Droppings

I

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

f you are reading these words you are the luckiest person on the planet. No hyperbole, no donkey dung, you are a living, breathing, human four-leaf clover with your roots embedded in the end of the rainbow. Darn right you should hold your head up and beam. Double darn right. “Why," you are beginning to wonder, “should I be so unaccountably fortunate?” And for that matter, how? Just because you are blessed beyond the measure of mere mortals doesn’t mean that you should remain unmindful of the foundation of your fortune. So I’ll tell you. You are standing at the epicenter of the known bird watching universe at the absolute peak of the southbound migration for tens of millions of birds. Now you are thinking: “Uh... I’m lucky because I’m going to be inundated with a bunch of birds. You call that luck?” You’re right. Luck sells this disclosure short. “Fabulous good fortune” is more to the point. As you read these words, mil-

lions and millions of avid birders from all over the planet are yearning, crying, craving to be you. Can you hear it? The wailing and gnashing of teeth? The rending of birder vests. The clunking sound of optics being thrown to the ground in despair. Cape May. Very arguably the most celebrated bird watching place in North

America – maybe even the world. And September! The month the boreal forests of Canada, the planet’s greatest bird hatchery, casts its feathered hosts to the four winds – warblers, vireos, thrushes. It’s the month tens of thousands of hawks crowd Cape May airspace en route to winter territories in South America. It’s the month Monarch butterf lies move through in pulsing, orange waves. It’s the month thousands and thousands and thousands of human visitors f lock to Cape May to witness one of the planet’s greatest spectacles. Migration! The great, annual exodus of things living in one hemisphere pouring into another. You’ve seen it on television. Now witness it for real. “But...” There you go again. Second guessing your amazing good fortune. Haven’t you learned anything? Remember when you met...? You know who I’m talking about. You knew it was

Bird Droppings ? From Page 111 right; knew it was for keeps, but you dithered and dawdled and now it’s just an ache. Remember when you could have bought gold at $245 an ounce? Yep. You were even counseling all your friends. “I’m telling you, just buy gold. Now’s your chance. Can’t go anywhere but up.” Yep. Called that, didn’t you? So here you are again. In the right place, at the right time. The bird watching equivalent of the doors to Fort Knox. Your good fortune has brought you to the door of destiny again. All you have to do is go birding. Get on the road to a life of discovery and wonder. See hundreds of different species of birds without even leaving Cape May. How? That’s the easy part. Just stop by the Cape May Bird Observatory on East Lake Drive and pick up a free birding map and checklist to the birds of Cape May. There’s even a program schedule showing the times and meeting places for daily bird walks. That’s free, too. The schedule, not the walks. Lucky you again. There’s a few Cape May Bird Observatory bird walks to choose from

Prepare to be inundated with birds every week – and one every Monday morning at 7:30am with Pete Dunne that meets in the parking lot at The Nature Conservancy on Sunset Boulevard. Stop by the Cape May Bird Observatory and ask any of the staff or volunteers what walks are happening throughout the week. They’ll be glad to help you and you’ll see why the Cape May Bird Observatory is THE place to come for all your nature needs – and not to be missed. The CMBO, located

at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point (884-2736), is open every day from 9:30am to 4:30pm. While you're there, check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars, pick up a free map and schedule of daily walks and programs for the season, take a look at the sighting sheets to check what's being seen, scan the bookshelves or pick up a bargain from the used and vintage books section, look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise (including a terrific lithograph done just for the Cape May Bird Observatory), or just browse around. Sit outside on our garden benches and enjoy the birds at the feeders and the view of Lake Lily. If you can’t make it in person, visit us online at www. BirdCapeMay.org – where birding Cape May is only a click away! Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey's own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at the CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.

The Movie Column

A

Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival, previews the season's upcoming films

re all of the superheroes out of the room? Whew! I never thought they’d leave. Thankfully, superhero movies seem to be reserved for the hot summer, peak-season film schedule. So if you look at the pipeline, you'll see all the standbys, well, standing by for release in 2012. And by standbys I mean the old guard: Batman, Superman and Spiderman. Am I so old that the previous Spiderman movies need to be rebooted? Now that the superheroes are out of the room, somewhat “normal” films are finally back in season. And there’s no more important season in Cape May than the birder season! It’s opening October 14 — not birder season, a movie called The Big Year, starring Steve Martin, Owen Wilson and Jack Black. The three play avid birders participating in a big North American event in birding (very similar to the one that culminates right here in Cape May: The World Series of Birding). And how about a reboot with a little kick? Footloose is being remade. It’s been more than 25 years since the original, so I guess a fresh

Johnny Depp plays an expatriate journalist in the film version of Hunter S. Thompson's The Rum Diary version is in order. Dennis Quaid plays the John Lithgow role of the town reverend who forbids dancing. Kenny Wormland plays the rebellious kid who shakes things up. Wormland is best noted for such dancing films as Center Stage: Turn It Up (2008) and You Got Served (2004). I’m not quite sure why these remakes have been called “re-imaginings,” as it seems there’s not

much imagination in this re-telling. Based on the previews, it seems the movie follows the 1984 original shot-for-shot in many places. Johnny Depp returns to his Hunter S. Thompson roots — well at least in a film based on a novel by the gonzo journalist. In The Rum Diary, Depp plays Paul Kemp, a journalist trapped at a down-and-out newspaper in Puerto Rico. In 1998, Depp starred in another Thompson adaptation, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, so this should be interesting. The Ides of March is a political thriller directed by and starring George Clooney. The cast seems outstanding, and the storyline has bite. In Time stars Justin Timberlake in a fantasy world much like Logan’s Run (1976), where people stop aging at 25 but are engineered to only live one more year. Of course, my pick for a favorite fall film is 50/50 with Joseph GordonLevitt playing a young man diagnosed with a rare cancer — did I mention it's a comedy? Of course the best movie ticket in town is the Cape May Film Festival, October 21-23 at the Chalfonte Hotel, where we host the best indie films! Visit www.capemayfilm.org for details.

The Dating Column

T

Stella Dixon's take on romance on Old Cape Island

hree years ago, my friend gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. I was in the delivery room for part of the time she was in labor. I have never seen another human in that kind of excruciating pain. It was especially jarring to see this particular friend wincing and crying, because she’s just about the toughest woman I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. Later, sitting in the waiting room, I must have looked pretty shaken. My friend’s mother approached me. “You know,” she said, “after a woman gives birth, her brain releases a hormone that helps her forget the pain. Otherwise, no woman would ever go through that twice.” At the time, this sounded just a little suspect. How could anyone simply forget that kind of pain? It also sounded sort of sneaky. Mother Nature doesn’t seem like the kind of lady who’d trick a woman into giving birth a second time; that’s so conniving. And yet, I’m starting to think that Mother Nature is just that devious. I wonder if the same dirty trick isn’t pulled on us after a particularly damaging relation-

ship. The heart must release some kind of chemical to erase all memory of the pain. Otherwise, who would willingly put herself through that kind of hurt again? And why else would I be signing up for yet another relationship? Haven’t I learned anything? I promised I would keep you posted on Tim, the Cape May man I met in the ocean about a month ago. I didn’t expect there would be much to say. To be honest, I figured we would have fizzled out by now, mostly because

Dave's Detailing

I had a too-good-to-be-true feeling about the whole thing. But, and I’m still a little shocked by this, Tim and I are totally un-fizzled. I like him. Or, as they say on the elementary school playground, I like-like him. He's smart, he's funny, he's handsome. Just being around him makes me happy. So what’s the problem? The problem is that I’m doing it again. I’m letting myself fall head over heels. As idiotic as it seems, I’m putting my bruised heart on the line once again, and bracing myself for the kind of pain no epidural can dull. I feel a little bit like a crazy masochist. I must be a glutton for punishment, like that woman on television with 19 children. At some point, a girl has to call it quits. And yet, we don’t. We go back for more, time and again. We give birth, we date men, we seek out pain. Maybe it's because of Mother Nature and her memory-erasing hormones. Or maybe it’s because of something else altogether. Perhaps we need a little bit of pain in our lives, just like we need a little bit of love. If nothing else, perhaps feeling one helps us remember just how close we are to feeling the other.

The Real Estate Column

H

Chris Bezaire on the latest trends and sales on the island

ere we are and Labor Day has already come and gone. If you blinked you probably missed it, and who could blame you with all that we've had going on.... earthquakes, hurricanes... and the Mets even won a game against the Phillies! For the moment, everything is back to normal (but who knows, as you are reading this we may even be trying to figure out what to do with Hurricane Katia). Now let's get into the transactions that took place lately. We had a total of eight transactions on the island, starting with 108 Second Avenue which was listed by Rich Townsend of Jersey Cape Realty and sold by Henry “Call me Hank Lanzalotti also of Jersey Cape Realty for $920,000. Next we have 1005 Benton sold by the Coastal Marketing Team of Chris Rothwell and Brian Groetsch and listed by Chris Clemans of, well, Chris Clemans SIR for $700,000. We also had 936 Lafayette Street listed by Todd de Satnick of, yup, de Satnick Real Estate and sold by Charity Clark McBride of Chris Clemans SIR for $625,000. Also sold was 1118

Idaho Avenue for $515,000. It was listed and sold by an outside agent so that's all you get on that one. The last one we had in Cape May was 1222 Delaware Avenue which was listed by Patricia Gray-Hendricks of Wilsey Realty and sold by Sandy Bezaire of Coastline Realty for $381,000. I have big news for you Cape May Point fans: we had not one but two transactions in the Point over the last couple of weeks. First we have a vacant lot on Lincoln Avenue which was listed and sold by Miss Cape May Point herself, Carol Menz of Coastline Realty. Finally we have 406 Cedar Avenue listed by Bill

Bezaire and Lynn Gleeson of Coldwell Banker Sol Needles and sold by Rick Spackman. Since Rick is a Cape May Resident and used to have his license in Cape May we'll cut him some slack this time, but no love for his office! Now for this week's tip. With rates as low as they are, it might be time to look into refinancing. There are some out-of-pocket costs, but the rule of thumb is that if you can get a rate that is at least one point lower than your current rate and you can recoup the refinance costs within one year, it's worth doing. I have several clients who have refinanced from a 30-year fixed down to a 15-year fixed and have kept their payment the same. Now is a good time to look into doing so before rates increase again. As always, if you have any questions please feel free to contact me. Until next time, and the slow beginning of fall.... Chris Bezaire is a fifth-generation real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Sol Needles Real Estate in Cape May. He can be reached at 609-972-6927 or chris@capemaychris.com. Check him out on Twitter and Facebook: @CapeMayChris, Facebook.com/ capemaychris.

What is an arm’s length transaction in Real Estate? In a property conveyance, an arm's length transaction is between people who are not related, not on close terms and who are presumed to have equal bargaining power. For example a mother giving a deed to her son for a nominal sum is not an arm's length transaction. A deed from the mother to an independent third party for fair market value would be an arm's length transaction.
