Blowing Some Froth At The Ugly Mug’s Annual Contest
The goal is simple: you have one blow to remove as much froth from the top of your glass as possible. The person with the least-filled glass wins the round. The event raised more than $1,200 for Police Athletic League. Congratulations to this year’s winner, Zeb Taylor. Aleksey Moryakov

The Police Blotter
VILLA RICA, Georgia - Robert Edward Tyrell was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and false imprisonment. The victim was his own mother, and what was the issue that caused him to blow his top? She refused to do his ironing for him.
Classic Quotations Cape May County Historical Museum
A Story From The Past “I must be a mermaid, Rango. I have no fear of depths and a great fear of shallow living.” Anaïs Nin “Darwin may have been quite correct in his theory that man descended from the apes of the forest, but surely woman rose from the frothy sea, as resplendent as Aphrodite on her scalloped chariot.” Margot Datz “A mermaid found a swimming lad, Picked him for her own, Pressed her body to his body, Laughed; and plunging down, Forgot in cruel happiness, That even lovers drown.” William Butler Yeats “I have a new respect for the mermaids, because it’s very tough what they do.” Gaz Coombes “Not everything is a mermaid that dives into the water.” Russian Proverb
For half a century, Cape May held its undisputed sway. Scores of summer cottages were built along the beach, a mile or so from the little 200-year-old town of 2,000 people, where resided the captains of the coastwise sailing vessels. Even after Newport and other resorts to the north began to build, up Cape May held its own. For the generation that followed the civil war, the “famous Stockton” was the beau ideal of all Summer hotels. Ben Miller
Facebook Mystery Contest
Weird Word Of The Week
SIRENIA – An order of fully aquatic, herbivorous mammals inhabiting rivers, estuaries, coastal marine waters, and wetlands. Sirenians, including manatees, have aquatic adaptations, like arms for steering and a paddle for propulsion, and they appear fat, but are highly muscular. Prior to the mid 19th century, mariners referred to them as mermaids.
KNOW your way around Cape May? Think of yourself as the observant type? Feast your eyes on the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Kate Chadwick. If you think you know what establishment you’re staring at, then you have a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter – follow the instructions carefully. And, don’t worry if you have never used Facebook before – it’s easy! Just ask your six-year-old nephew for help. To enter, look for the mystery photo at facebook.com/ exitzeropublishing. Good luck!
Random Fact Of The Week
Two symbols associated with mermaids are the comb and mirror, from the goddess Venus. The mirror is so closely associated with Venus that the symbol for the planet Venus is a hand mirror (the circle with the “+” under it). In heraldry, a mermaid pictured with a comb and mirror symbolizes vanity.
Fortune Cookie Of The Week J “Even the greatest of whales is helpless in the middle of a desert. ” J Once a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with chicken and snow peas. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editors
S
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
o many Cape May lovers proclaim September as their favorite time here, and that’s a pretty tough point to argue. The summer crowds have thinned out but the town is still abuzz, the weather is nice but not too hot, with maybe an errant hurricane or tropical storm thrown in to kick things up for surfing enthusiasts. There is still plenty to do (and places to park!), and a quick glance at the EZ Guide To What’s Going On (page 9) will confirm that – we’re not a rolling-up-the-sidewalks-after- Labor Day kind of town. The shows must go on at Cape May Stage and East Lynne Theater, Stan Sperlak’s new exhibit is in full swing at SOMA NewArt Gallery, and all your favorite restaurants and bars are still up and running. Speaking of food and things to do, let us not forget the Cape May Forum: Chautauqua At The Shore’s ten-day event “Guess What’s Coming To Dinner? The Politics of Food in the 21st Century.” (Flip over the paper to see their 16-page program guide.) The Forum runs from September 15 through September 25, and will be chock full of demonstrations, workshops and nationally renowned guest speakers. The forum has linked up with local organizations such as the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities, Cape May Stage, Cape May Film Festival, among quite a few others local heavy hitters for an impressive line-up of workshops and activities. Go to their website at capemayforum. org to register or get more information, and contribute to the love affair that exists between Cape May and food. you know how we feel about animals here at EZ Global Headquarters, and
³
so we have wo items worth mentioning: the First Annual Benefit Pet Fashion Show and Blessing of the Animals will be held at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church in Villas on Saturday October 15, having been originally slated for August 27 and subsequently derailed by Irene. Now a lot of churches hold blessing of the animal ceremonies; it was the fashion show aspect that got our attention here. There will be awards for the following categories, among others: Best-Dressed Dog, Best-Dressed Cat (!), Best Bathing Suit, and Most Outrageous. There is a $5 per pet registration fee (a bargain for what promises to be a priceless photo op), and proceeds benefit both the church and Turtlesinger, Inc., which has provided eleven years of award-winning public education programs to area children. And this story warmed our hearts. We got a phone call from EZ reader Linda Trunk in East Brunswick, who loves to spend time in Cape May with her adopted 9-year-old border collie, Rascal Ravioli. The pooch was recently given a terminal cancer diagnosis, and Linda decided to bring him down
to his favorite town last week for what could be his final day trip. She says they covered the whole town, venturing out to the Point, along the promenade and a trot around town. Linda says that she was completely gratified by the outpouring of love and affection from everyone in town that she and Rascal encountered, and just felt that Cape May residents deserve a shout-out from her and her special buddy for making a difficult time just a little bit easier. Rascal is holding his own for now, and Linda credits the boost he got from visiting his favorite place, so hats off to you, fellow Cape May animal-lovers, for touching the lives of a visitor and her canine best friend. Finally, in an apolitical reflection of remembrance, a team of runners will embark on a 152-mile run to honor every New Jersey service member killed in Operation Iraqui Freedom, Enduring Freedom, and New Dawn. The 3rd Annual NJ Run For The Fallen will start on Friday, September 23 at 5pm with a 2-mile run/ walk from Cape May Lighthouse to Sunset Beach for the Sunset Flag Ceremony. The next morning, Saturday, September 24, the run team will assemble at 6:15 am at Sunset Beach before setting off on the 2-day, 150mile run to Holmdel, New Jersey. Each mile of the run is dedicated to a New Jersey Hero, and the run team will stop at every Hero Marker to present an American flag and personal biographical card in honor of each fall service member with the intent to create a 150-mile memorial trail through New Jersey – quite an impressive undertaking. You can visit www.njrunforthefallen.org to see what these folks are all about.

Every week our photographer Danielle O’Neal roams the streets of Cape May on a mission... to give away a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. But it’s not quite THAT easy – first, the lucky recipient has to answer three questions related to our issue theme, which this week is all about mermaids. This week’s winner is Dana Blanco, 26, from West Chester County, Pennsylvania. We found Dana strolling the Washington Street Mall with her companion. Here are her answers to our piercing questions: What is the male version of a mermaid called? A merman What movie about a mermaid was Tom Hanks in? Splash What is The Little Mermaid’s name? Ariel Dana wins a $50 gift certificate to Victorious Pink for answering our questions. Congratulations and enjoy! PHOTOGRAPH BY Danielle o’neal

The Lost Keys
T
David Kurkowski relates a serendipitous incident on the beaches of Cool Cape May
he following story is absolutely true. Last Friday evening I visited Philadelphia beach with my wife and several friends. It was a most magical night with crisp air, lovely waves and a beautiful sunset. When I returned home after the customary ice cream cone, I discovered that my keys were missing. I’m sure everyone has had that sinking feeling at one time or another. Of course, I had no idea where exactly I had lost my keys. So at 6am on Saturday morning I began to retrace my steps, searching everywhere we had been, even raking the beach where we were sitting the night before. No luck. When I stopped over at the lifeguard station, I was shown a large bin filled with keys, cell phones, iPods, combs, and other valuable and trivial detritus of us beachgoers. Alas, my keys were not in the bunch. The next morning, my wife suggested we revisit the site and ask one of the beach
tag checkers. So off we went for one last search. It was Sunday and the entrance to Philadelphia beach was busy with the arriving Labor Day crowd. I took my place in line behind a lovely family with two young children – a boy and a girl. “Did you happen to find any keys?” I asked the tag checker when my turn came. “I lost mine two nights ago.” “No, nothing here,” she said. Then the young boy in front of me,
who was perhaps seven or eight years old, turned and asked, “Did you lose two gold keys?” “Why, yes I did,” I said. (They were brass and perhaps looked “gold.”) “We found them last night and set them on the blue box over there.” With that, the young boy, whose name was Collin, ran over to the beach box and retrieved my keys, which he and his father had found Saturday night, about 24 hours after they fell out of my pocket. “We were playing soccer in the sand right here,” said Collin’s father, pointing to the exact spot where I had been sitting the night before, “and we kicked up your keys. We set them on the box last night.” What an amazing coincidence! I lose my keys, a family plays soccer on the same spot a day later, and a young child finds them. Then we happen by chance to meet each other at the beach entrance on Sunday morning. Thank you, Collin. I always knew Cape May was special; now I’m starting to think it truly is enchanted.

The column where anonymous gasbags have their say! I wish that America would abolish the two party political system and just get people who can get the job done! The current system just sets up our politicians to fight among one another instead of working together! – Erma *** And I wish that politicians were in the same social security program and same healthcare system as most Americans... then they’d really be concerned about fixing it. Until then, why would or should they? – Cape May

I think I saw a mermaid at The Cove! It was either that or a fish because all I saw was the tail! – Cape May
I think that Cape May should buy like 20 tons of broken glass and dump it a mile offshore. And in a few years it’ll be the sea glass capital of the world! – Cape May
*** Do you need a license to fish for mermaids? And if so, where do I get one? I’m kinda looking for a wife. – West Cape May *** I’m supposed to write something in here about Jay, the old produce manager at Acme but I can’t think of anything funny to say! Sorry Jay. – Cape May *** And I haven’t picked on Russell from Swains in a few weeks either! – Cape May *** Do you think that Mermaids have a lot of omega 3’s? – Erma *** I’m still not quite sure how mermaids reproduce... it would seem that they have to lay eggs, yet at the same time have some very nice breasts. So what gives? – Town Bank

*** Did you know that mermaids and mermen together are known as merfolk? - Cape May *** I wonder what mermaids eat? – Del Haven *** And I also wonder if fish have names for us humans. And if so, what would they call us? “Bloop bloop,” perhaps! – Del Haven *** Cape May should have a mermaid parade like Coney Island! – West Cape May *** Don’t be silly, mermaids aren’t real...but the Loch Ness Monster and Bigfoot are real. – Cape May Point

Bartered Bachelors For A Cause
A
The 3rd Annual King Neptune Bachelor Auction takes over The Rusty Nail
s girls’ nights out go, it’s pretty difficult to improve upon a slew of attractive, available men parading around for your approval. But it can and will be done! All you have to do is throw in a free glass of wine, some hors d’oeuvres, the chance to win some excellent prizes, and voila – it’s a girls’ night out to remember. There’s the added bonus of helping an exceedingly worthy cause, too. If you have not yet experienced the Cape May Mermaid Guild King Neptune Bachelor Auction, you’ll get your chance this Sunday, September 18 from 5-8pm at The Rusty Nail, when the third annual auction kicks off. Every penny raised by the auction directly benefits The Community FoodBank of New Jersey Southern Branch, helping to feed thousands of homeless and hungry families throughout Cape May, Cumberland, and Atlantic counties. How does it work? Simply buy your ticket, procure your bidding paddle, and cast your bid for the bachelor who appeals to you most. Once the bidding starts, some shirts
may come off, so ladies, please behave! Or not. Founded in 2008, the non-profit Mermaid Guild of Cape May is “a collection of wonderful places, run by interesting women,” and giving back to the community is their primary purpose. The annual bachelor auction has historically been a smashing success for the group, raising some major
money in addition to simply being a great night out. Prepare for some serious fun. “Last year, things got a little out of hand – which was perfect!” one Mermaid tells us. “We were able to raise more than $16,000 for the FoodBank. We’re hoping for even more bidders this year... It’s the perfect merging of fun and philanthropy!” Tickets are $25, and this year advance purchasers will receive 25 tickets to use on the lucky prize table – we did mention there are prizes, besides the hunks, right? Prize baskets brimming with wares and gift certificates from the best shops, restaurants and services in town will be yours for the winning. Oh, and a note to the legions of Nail fans – please keep in mind that this is a ladies-only event, but that the outside bar will be open to the public for your drinking, dining, fire pit, and general chilling out pleasure. For more information or to purchase tickets, call the Mermaid Hotline at 609884-3626, or visit The Flying Fish Studio in West Cape May or Pat Jackson Jewelers in Cape May.
Definitely not just your grandmother’s tearoom! Sure, you’ll find tasty tea sandwiches, freshly-baked scones and teabreads served with clotted cream, and that traditional, elegant service that you associate with fine dining. But there is so much more to The Carriage House. In addition to our traditional Tea Luncheon and Afternoon Tea, The Carriage House offers hearty fare from the café menu, plus homemade soups, and hearty wholesome entrée salads that fill you up while still letting you feel virtuous for eating a salad.
So try it today, and bring grandmom along, too…. She’ll love you for it!

The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone
y mother always says that only the spoon knows what’s at the bottom of the bowl. When I was a kid, I thought she was talking about an actual spoon and bowl. Looking at my breakfast, I pictured all of the things to which my own spoon might be privy. Who cares, I thought, about soggy cornflakes? Then I started working in the small town of Cape May. I was impressed with the Victorian architecture, the beautiful beaches and the friendly people. But mostly, I was impressed with the sheer amount of gossip flying around these streets, and the sheer amount of it that’s absolutely false. For the first time, I think I got what my mother was trying to say. Most of the time, in the bowl that is Cape Island, we are terribly misinformed spoons. Don’t get me wrong, I love a juicy piece of gossip as much as the next girl, but I realize how dangerous it can be. Do some praying to the porcelain god after too many drinks at the Brown Room and, within hours, the whole city will be whispering
about your morning sickness. So much as sit next to a boy at the bar, and this town will have you shacking up by morning. The rumor mill can be just as daunting here as traffic on the Fourth of July weekend, and it’s particularly hard to escape in the restaurant. If the wrong busboy overhears that tiff you’re having with your wife about how much to tip the valet, brace for whispers about your pending divorce. Share a dinner with anyone but your significant other, and you might as well slap a giant red “A” to your chest. If you want an untarnished reputation, you should probably pick a different vacation spot. For three years, I’ve listened to the
rumors cooking in the dining room where I work. I’ve been the subject of some. I’ll never forget arriving at work to discover I’d been having an affair with not one, but two coworkers. And also that I’d gone vegetarian. If only my life were that exciting and my diet that good. As a waitress, I like to think I know what’s going on in every bowl I serve. I memorize all the ingredients. There are scallops in the corn chowder, important information for anyone with a shellfish allergy. There is gluten in the peanut butter dessert, which is important for anyone with celiac disease. Pass along the wrong information, and I could kill someone. But when it comes to the bowl that is Cape May, I have no idea what’s going on. And chances are, dear reader, that you don’t either. If we keep passing along the wrong information, no one will break out in hives, sure, but people are going to suffer. Friendships will be ruined. Careers will be compromised. In fact, they already have been. I’m pretty sure. Or at least, that’s what I heard.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady My boyfriend and I have lived together for two years. I went to Atlantic City for a girls’ weekend, and the day I got home, found a bracelet that does NOT belong to me under our bed. He adamantly claims he has no idea where it came from, and actually seems annoyed that I even asked him about it. He’s not the cheating type, and I’ve never questioned his fidelity – until now. – Wondering Dear Wondering The Answer Lady is sure you don’t believe him to be the murdering type, either, but if you stumbled upon him standing over a dead body with a smoking gun, you’d have to reassess your opinion. Not to paint your boyfriend willy-nilly with the cheating brush; the Answer Lady is just saying it’s ridiculous to ignore evidence that’s staring you in the face. Has he offered another
Wise answers to perplexing questions
explanation? Perhaps a huge big bash in your absence replete with drunken, wanton partygoers staggering all over the house (not that this would make you feel great, but still). Do you have a cleaning lady? Could it belong to a niece, or the daughter of a visiting friend? If you’ve ruled out all such possibilities, there seems to be only one remaining answer. By the way, the fact that he is being a jerk about it is the most suspicious thing of all to the Answer Lady. Surely if he were completely innocent, he’d be trying to reassure you. And
the Answer Lady would bet her bottom dollar that if HE returned home from a weekend away to find a piece of men’s jewelry anywhere in the vicinity of his bed, he’d have a few questions. Unless he comes up with an excellent explanation, like, yesterday, you have some serious thinking to do. Dear Answer Lady I saw my sister’s boyfriend kissing some chick at Cabanas last night. He introduced her as a friend, she left soon after, and he asked me not to say anything to my sister. They weren’t mauling each other, but still – does kissing equal cheating? – Her Sister Dear Sister Depends on the couple. Some folks have ‘open’ marriages, where they actively, uh – interact with others; some consider it cheating if their partner even THINKS about kissing someone else. (And some folks think you can get naked and hug, kiss and ‘maul each other,’ as you put it, but it’s not ‘really sex’ without intercourse, but the Answer Lady digresses.) To paraphrase Bill Clinton’s priceless quote, guess it depends upon what your definition of ‘is’ is.

In the fall of 2001 I was told that I may never walk again. I am so grateful for the wonderful doctors and technology that have given me my life back. Others are not as fortunate. After my injury I researched different charities dedicated to spinal cord awareness. As an avid surfer, I was particularly interested in the Life Rolls On Foundation (www.liferollson.org). Life Rolls On (LRO) is a non-profit 501(c)3 Foundation that exists to be a grassroots resource and an advocate on behalf of young people who have sustained a spinal cord injury (SCI). Their tagline, “Instilling in people that life with SCI does indeed roll on.”

Chance Meetings
Everett Chance wines and dines Cape May’s single ladies
T
he Mermaids will be selling men on Sunday. It’s a worthy cause, and if you’ve got a pair of X chromosomes you should definitely go. But as someone who’s been auctioned off thrice, let me warn my Y chromosome brethren that they should run screaming. My first bachelor auction experience was years ago on the Outer Banks. The shopkeeper of the store next to mine applied pressure, and for the sake of charity, I caved. My big concern was with the women in attendance. The next town over was populated by old fishing families, there was a Deliverance level of inbreeding, and I was genuinely worried about being purchased by a withered sea hag. On auction night, I walked into a sorority of drunken cougars. Just getting onto the stage I was repeatedly groped (which, frankly, I should’ve enjoyed more, but at the time it was scary), the volume rising as I attempted to shake my moneymaker to something with throbbing bass. Ultimately, that shopkeeper bought me, saving me from the clutches of some
salty crones. And she never did collect on her date. My next auction was a similar experience. The bar was filled with ladies who were busy taking advantage of their two free drink tickets. One section of the bar had hoisted a banner, declaring their section to be COUGARTOWN. And once again, the married woman who’d finagled me into the auction bought me, although her intention was to make me a gift to her

Spy Gear... Micro Agent Listener
single friend. One problem: the whole idea ticked off the single friend, who wanted nothing to do with any of it. Once more, the date went uncollected. The same thing happened on the third try. The high bidder was married, with visions of gift wrapping me for an unmarried friend. Within a week of the auction, that single lady’s mother died. It wasn’t quite the right time to go on a date, and for a third time the date never happened. But there’s a pattern here. Even when I put together fun dates – moonlight kayaking, an afternoon of sailing, concerts with backstage passes included – women don’t want to go on them. Women who don’t even know me are refusing to go out with me. These auctions are ego-crushing. You don’t even have to be the high bidder to go out with me. Send an email to info@exitzero.us, I’ll be in touch, and we’ll dine at one of the Cape’s fine restaurants. Afterwards I’ll write all about it, a combined date and restaurant review. Your name will be changed, the restaurant’s won’t. Even mermaids need a good meal.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
see no alternative to us all becoming mermaids and mergentlemen. I have taken a long, good look at Cape May, and have concluded that the rising sea levels will place us all under a good few feet of water within a decade or five. Obviously, Plan A was to raise our city on pneumatic legs like a gigantic oil rig, and Plan B was to build a waterproof wall around the edges of Cape May, but there are technical challenges that may make both plans tricky to carry out, so I have decided that an advanced evolutionary step is what we need. Wings were in the cards for quite a while, to escape the inevitable floodwaters, but then common sense prevailed, and so Plan C entails that we all develop tails. It’s not like we are unfamiliar with mermaids, after all: we have our very own mermaid population living just a short distance off The Point, protected by local law and surviving on a diet of fish, seaweed, the occasional Shoebie who strays too close to the water’s edge, and the random Wildwooder who is dropped off a boat at dinnertime.
Of course we have the minor issue of gills, not to mention the lack of a tail, but these are small, even minor obstacles to the likes of us. I have talked with the best minds in the business, and am assured that by submerging our heads in a bucket of seawater once each day, starting at a minute, and building up by 30 seconds each day, we will all soon become accustomed to breathing underwater. And all we have to do to turn our legs into tails is to keep our legs exceedingly close together at all times: like
a cut healing, our legs will soon seamlessly fuse into one. To that end, I have already taken to walking only in teeny tiny babysteps. Admittedly, it extends my morning constitutional stroll from 34 minutes to four hours, but I believe that is a price worth paying. I have even prevailed upon Young Albert to do the same thing, though he will, being a dog, need two tails, as his legs are far too far apart to fuse into one easily. Of course we will need to set a date for the official transition, so as to avoid an uncomfortable period of time when we are two-legged but splashing around kneedeep in seawater, so I have decided to take the bull (or rather manatee) by the horns, and the plan is to go fully aquatic on January 1, 2013. I have taken the liberty of ordering Speedos for all of you chaps, and rather flattering fishscale bikinis for all the ladies. You should feel free to pop by the D’Catur Mansion at any time for a personal, private fitting, plus I will throw in a free bucket of raw herring to get you in the mood. No need to thank me. Really.

The Cape May Crossword
None of that generic nonsense you see in other papers... a puzzle just for “Exit Zero”! By Jon Roth So YOU love crosswords? Great. Sit down, get a cup (or glass) of your favorite beverage, relax and enjoy this puzzle. The answers to the crossword are all related to this week’s issue. Our theme this week: mermaids. The solution can be found on the front page of our website, www.exitzero.us. Across 2. In Irish and Scottish culture, this creature is analogous to a mermaid, except it relies on a seal skin to shapeshift. 3. A mermaid with a sword and shield adorns the crest of this Polish capital. 5 . This 1994 independent film is set on the western coast of Ireland, where a young girl learns that one of her ancestors wasn’t entirely human. 8 . thanks to the song of mermaids. 17 . This American showman, famous for creating the best-known circus in the nation, exhibited the “Fiji Mermaid,” which was really just piece of taxidermy involving a monkey and a fish. 19 . This shop, the sister store to the Whale’s Tale, offers some beautiful jewelry pieces crafted by the self-styled “Funky Mermaid.” 21 . She played the female lead in Splash. Down 1 . Sailors in past centuries were said to confuse this aquatic mammal with a mermaid – though they don’t look so maidenly to us. 2 . In the original short story The Little Mermaid, it’s said that mermaids don’t go to heaven. Instead, they dissolve into this. 4 . This 2009 Irish film stars Colin Farrell as a fisherman who finds a strange woman in his nets. The title is derived from a Greek word
for “water nymph.” 6 . These round, clear pieces of polished quartz (which can be found locally) are as beautiful a jewel as any mermaid could hope for. 7. This Danish author wrote The Little Mermaid, Thumbelina, The Little Match Girl and more. 9 . This American swimmer has won 16 Olympic medals – a merman if we ever saw one. 11. This is the name of the friendly red crab in Disney’s animated The Little Mermaid. 12 . This international coffee chain features a split-finned mermaid as their logo. 13 . Activity Of The Week
Y
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Waterparks
ou may believe, as I did, that no child with access to the ocean needs a waterpark. In my frugal mind, waterparks were for kids in Kansas or some other oceanless locale. Armed with a coupon, my kids persuaded me otherwise. One visit to the Ocean Oasis Waterpark and Beach Club, and I was immediately converted. I can’t wait to go back next summer. Morey’s Piers has two waterparks in Wildwood – Ocean Oasis, which looks like a tropical paradise, and Raging Waters, which offers the adventure of an imaginary shipwreck. The parks are very clean and staffed with conscientious workers. Cabanas are available to rent, but reserve early, because they sell out. There are quiet areas for reading or napping. Hammocks are available on a first come, first served basis. There are giant checkers and chess sets, live music and a s’mores campfire. A naturalist hosted a seaside petting zoo the day we were there, with children learning about horseshoe crabs and starfish. You can get a spa treatment, or float on the Endless River.
Water slides are, of course, the main attraction. There are slides for the brave and not so brave – the Rocket Raft has lots of height, but gentle twists, Riptide Rapids is faster and scarier. Shotgun Falls – for expert swimmers only – is even more thrilling. Put aside your memories of old-fashioned slides that scrape the skin and steal your bathing
suit – these are smooth and comfortable. Little ones will love Bonsai Beach, featuring a “zero depth” water play area. Parents giggled as much as the kids as they enjoyed the climbing nets and water cannons. Ocean Oasis is worth full price, but discounts are available. A family of four can get the morning special – from the park opening until 12:30pm – for $80. Bring your own towels, sunscreen and waterproof camera: all available inside the parks, but at a premium. Fill a cooler with sandwiches and non-alcoholic beverages (no glass) to avoid the crowd at the Oasis Café. Bring ID if you plan to order a cocktail, and rent a locker to stash valuables – lost keys or a soggy phone can ruin your day. And, if you can’t wait until next year to get to Morey’s Piers, try Morey’s Fears: Terror on the Boardwalk. This new event features “dark versions” of your favorite rides, including the Ghost Ship. Morey’s Fears is designed for customers over age eight, has an admission charge of $25, and is scheduled for weekend nights in October. Next week: Nuns on the Run

Tara was found on the streets and brought to our shelter by someone with a good heart. She is affectionate but needs to learn some manners as she can be jumpy at times. She enjoys her toys and can be protective of them so we suggest a home with children over the age of 13. She is a good gal who just needs some training and guidance. If you’re able to offer Tara what she needs please stop by. Adoption fee is $95.
«
Lana is a pretty nine-month-old gal who weighs around 44 pounds. Sadly no one has come to claim Lana so we’re hoping that a kind soul will come and rescue her. She’s going to need someone with a firm hand and patience as she needs training and a good deal of exercise. If you think you may be able to offer Lana the life she needs, please stop by and meet her today! Adoption fee is $95.

Buddy has been brought to the shelter three times through no fault of his own. He can be a bit hyperactive, but he’s part Labrador, after all. All he needs is a firm hand and someone to be consistent with him. He plays rough and needs some training so he belongs in a home without small kids. If you think you’d be the right match for Buddy, stop by the shelter and meet him sometime soon. Adoption fee is $95.

Mimi is a pretty brown and black cat waiting patiently here at the shelter. We found her wandering outside recently and took her in. She’s an older gal that needs a lot of affection in her golden years and belongs in a home with a loving guardian. Mimi is a very calm and personable cat who loves to be pet. Adoption fee is $20.
«
Heidi is named after the sweet girl in the Swiss novel because just like her, this cat is full of love. She has a unique face, which is half orange and half dark brown, and deep green eyes you could just fall into. She’s very friendly and sweet, and will purr up a storm when you pet her. Adoption fee is $20.

Sparky will talk to you all day. Come anywhere near his cage, and he’ll start meowing a mile a minute. We’re guessing he’s saying something like, “Hey! Pick me! I’m a great guy!” With his pleasing manner, this guy deserves the attention he’s demanding. Why not stop by and see if Sparky could light up your life? Adoption fee is $35.

FDNY Comes To Cape May Stage
T
advertisinG feature here is excitement in the air as
Cape May Stage prepares to open a new version of The Woolgatherer by William Mastrosimone tonight. Last night’s sold-out preview performance had audience members loving this cast featuring Michael Basile and Pilar Milhollen. It is appropriate that this weekend would be the firemen’s convention in Wildwood, because Michael Basile is a New York City fireman. On this tenth anniversary of 9/11, having an FDNY fireman in our cast is particularly poignant. The fact that he is also an experienced Equity actor with impressive credentials is no coincidence when it comes to working at Cape May Stage. The Woolgatherer is the story of a gruff truck driver thinking he is going to have a one-night stand with a delicate dreamer of a girl. They end up changing each other’s lives in ways that are surprising, but inevitable. The playwright, NJ resident William Mastrosimone, will be in attendance on September 17 for a talk-back with the audience that you won’t want to miss. This play was a hit when it first opened at Circle Repertory Company back in 1987. This fresh, new version is being created especially for this cast at Cape May Stage. It is a must see. Opening nights are always celebratory at Cape May Stage. There are still a few tickets to be had by calling 884-1341 or going online to capemaystage.org, so you can be at the celebration enjoying food and drinks alongside the cast and production team. Join the crowd after the show on Thursday, September 15, at the Mad Batter, where
Above: Mastrosimone (left) has rewritten parts of his debut play for this Cape May premiere and will participate in a post-show discussion on Saturday, September 17. Below: Kate McCauley Hathaway returns in a cabaret performance on September 19. Artistic Director Roy Steinberg will be on hand to discuss the play with interested theatergoers. On Monday, September 19, Kate McCauley Hathaway is being featured in Blue Plate Special. This is an evening of song and funny writings about food that is part of Cape May Forum’s “Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner” week-long event. Meredith Riley Stewart (who delighted audiences as Shelby in Steel Magnolias) will be dancing. Roy Steinberg will be doing a song from Peter Pan – something about poisoning the Lost Boys. Marlena Lustik (Ouiser from Steel Magnolias) compiled the material and will be joining Kate McCauley Hathaway in a song about some unlikely ingredients for a dessert. People still talk about Kate Hathaway’s sold-out cabaret, Star Songs, from last season. Opening nights, talk-backs with famous authors, and cabarets for Cape May Forum are all happening in the next five days. Call 884-1341 or go to capemaystage.org for more informtion, or to join in the fun.

Bird Droppings
I
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
am scared to death. I just saw an online trailer for the movie on birding that’s supposed to be released in October. It’s called The Big Year. It’s about three guys who are vying to see as many species of birds as they can in a single year in North America. It didn’t portray the guys as a bunch of dorky milksops who read Vanity Fair, talk to house plants, count their change and button their polo shirts right to collar. In fact, aside from the expected avocational passion, they seemed pretty normal. That’s why I’m scared to death. What would happen if normal people get the idea that bird watching is normal behavior? They might become birders themselves. Swell the ranks of birders so that space on the Hawk Watch Platform at Cape May Point State Park reaches a premium. Make it impossible to go on the Monday morning bird walk at the South Cape May Meadows unless you claim a parking place by 7am. Make top-quality binoculars so hard to come by that manufacturers start putting
premium surcharges on the things. Drive the demand for field guides up so high that people start going into their attics and selling old first-edition Golden Guides on eBay. In no time at all people will be calling out Duck Hawks and Pigeon Hawks at the Hawk Watch and reporting Common Scoter and Oldsquaw at the Sea Watch. Anarchy. That’s what we’ll have.
Anarchy and a run on Cape May birding maps and checklists. They’ll be gone faster than ten-cent brownies at the church bake sale. Faster. The maps and checklists are FREE at Cape May Bird Observatory. I’m not trying to be elitist. It’s not that I have an aversion to people who are average, normal, productive members of society. It’s just that the reason I got into birding was to get away from people in general. It was the kind of avocation you could hide and never worry about not having the newest and hottest driver; or worry much about somebody else’s batting average slipping, or feel contrite because you look at the cover of People magazine and don’t recognize a freaking face. Birding was just a nice, engaging excuse to go out and enjoy the natural world. See a few real cool birds like Bald Eagle, Longeared Owl, Ruby-throated Hummingbirds (birds that are found in Cape May). If you ran into another birder you’d stop, exchange

Bird Droppings ? From Page 107 greetings and sightings. Wish each other well. Go your merry way. Birding was a great way to squander a life. Meet a few nice people. Travel the world with an exciting, catalytic focus. See natural spectacles. Never have to wait in line. Imagine if trying to get into the Cape May Bird Observatory to check the bird sighting sheet meant standing in a line as long as the lift line at Camelback during Christmas break? Imagine if birding becomes so popular that birders stop sharing their sightings. Stare straight ahead when they pass you on the trail. Lie and say “the winds are wrong today,” so that out-of-town birding groups won’t go to the Hawk Watch Platform and claim all that valuable space at the rail. All this because some guys in Hollywood decided to depict birding the way it really is. Normal. Maybe I saw it wrong. Maybe the online clip just shows the normal side of the movie (so as not to scare normal moviegoers away) and the crazy weirdo stuff that everyone believe birders do constitutes the balance of the movie. Hope so. Anyway, at least for a couple
Birders shoot for a blockbuster in The Big Year of weeks, birding is still considered weird. Better count my blessings. No telling when this streak of fortune might end and birding becomes the next fad. If you want to get a little of birding background before you see the movie, consider going on a Cape May Bird Observatory Bird walk – there’s a few to choose from every week. Or you can stop by the Cape May Bird Observatory and ask any of the staff or volunteers what walks are happening throughout the week. They’ll be glad to help you and you’ll see why the Cape May Bird

Observatory is THE place to come for all your nature needs. The CMBO, located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point (884-2736), is open every day from 9:30am to 4:30pm, seven days a week in September and October. While you're there, check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars, pick up a free map and schedule of daily walks and programs for the season, take a look at the sighting sheets to check what's being seen, scan the bookshelves or pick up a bargain from the used and vintage books section, look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise, or just browse around. Sit outside on our garden benches and enjoy the birds at the feeders and the view of Lake Lily. If you can’t make it in person, visit us online at www.BirdCapeMay.org – where birding Cape May is only a click away! Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey's own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at the CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.

The Movie Column
T
Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews "The Guard"
here is a rich history of great films and terrible flicks about unconventional, maybe overzealous, law enforcement officials. Start with The Keystone Kops, suffer through an onslaught of Police Academy movies as well as one too many Beverly Hills Cop attempts. And the fun doesn't stop there. More recent iterations of the copsfor-yucks patrol include Kevin James in Mall Cop and Seth Rogen in Observe and Report. Both movies are admittedly pretty bad (although I did drowsily sit through Mall Cop after renting it for a dollar from a grocery store Redbox – not so bad when you're really not that invested in it). Oh, and let's not forget the Reno 911! series – or maybe let's do forget – another illconceived, trashy spoof. The Guard is unlike any of those police farces, and is well worth the search as you're not going to find it in many local theaters. The film stars Brendon Gleeson, notorious character actor, as a police Sergeant Gerry Boyle in County Galway, Ireland. Gleeson was born to play this role, perfectly cast as a cop who is unorthodox to say the least. It's not beyond
Brendon Gleeson plays a fast and loose cop alongside Don Cheadle in The Guard Boyle's standards to pop or snort confiscated contraband now and then. Another wonderful actor, Don Cheadle, plays opposite Gleeson as FBI agent Wendell Everett trying to stop a smuggling ring making its way through the port of Boyle's town. Sure, Boyle is the garden variety loudmouth lout, not unlike the Peter Griffin
character in Family Guy. And yes, Everett is the uptight law enforcement type who would rather follow the book than listen to unconventional wisdom. Let's not do long, deep character studies here. Instead, enjoy Gleeson's brilliant execution as an oaf who does eventually show he has some standards and Cheadle who succeeds in fostering a reluctant rapport with the uncultured local. This film has a great number of high-end, low-brow comedic lines and moments – not that easy to pull off. The actors stay in character throughout, never once missing a beat. So this is a dark comedy that doesn't become juvenile or gory... sign me up! Bathroom humor was not spared during the film, but it was not gratuitous either. Kudos to screenwriter John Michael McDonagh, who won an award at the Berlin Film Festival for the screenplay. I’ll file The Guard in my "Buried Treasure" folder. Do you love a movie you think didn't get the acclaim or audience you think it deserved? Two free weekend passes to the upcoming Cape May Film Festival for the first person to email capemayfilm@hotmail.com with your favorite buried treasure selections!

The Dating Column
K
Stella Dixon's take on romance on Old Cape Island
aren is in a healthy relationship. She rarely ever fights with her boyfriend. Sure, they have a few squabbles here and there, but even their arguments are healthy. They never go to bed angry. They listen to one another. They try hard to see where the other is coming from. You would think that Karen is content, but she has one big, fat complaint: there simply is not enough drama in her relationship. Karen would love to be taken for granted just once. She wants to be let down, betrayed, disappointed. She wants a reason to scream and cry and have an explosive argument. Karen isn’t the only friend I have who feels compelled to fight. We all know those couples who argue all the time. In a moment, they will move from tonsil hockey to tongue lashing, from making out in the corner of the Rusty Nail to pulverizing one another with verbal attacks. When there aren’t any, they invent reasons to fight. I once knew a couple who got into a heated debate about whether or not a porta-potty can have a sink. I don’t know why this is. Maybe angry passion is better than no
passion at all. Maybe the make-up sex really is that good. Or maybe we have nonsensical fights because we know that good things don’t come easy. We all want a blockbuster ending, and we can’t get there without at least a little drama. You notice the most romantic movies are never about the easy relationships; easy is too dull. Then again, maybe we argue for the reassurance. They say that you only fight with the ones you love; they’re the only people with

the power to hurt you. So maybe we fight to prove that we still have this power. Nearly kicking one’s significant other to the curb on a regular basis is the only way to make sure he still wants to fight for you. Sometimes, we beat each other down because it feels so good when the person we love builds us back up. Whatever the reason, people enjoy fighting more than they let on. But I am not one of these people. Confrontation freaks me out. A guy I once dated took me to a party where he spent the entire night with his ex. I spent the whole night convincing myself I didn’t have a right to be angry, so I let him off the hook. I don’t know why I’m wired this way, but it’s a problem. Because fighting is such an important part of any relationship, I’m not sure I’ll be successful in love until I learn how. Tim and I haven’t fought yet, and I’m pretty sure I can’t consider us dating until we do. A part of me is tempted pick a fight over something silly, just to get it over with. Who knows, maybe someday Tim and I will have one of those rare relationships that’s worth fighting for. Until then, if next week’s column is about porta-potties, you’ll know why.

What is an arm’s length transaction in Real Estate? In a property conveyance, an arm's length transaction is between people who are not related, not on close terms and who are presumed to have equal bargaining power. For example a mother giving a deed to her son for a nominal sum is not an arm's length transaction. A deed from the mother to an independent third party for fair market value would be an arm's length transaction.

CAPE MAY FORUM
Thursday, September 15, 2011
Calling all Foodies, and all of you looking for a healthy menu of activities to make your stay in Cape May memorable... Welcome Friends Cape May Forum has worked all year to bring you “Guess What’s Coming For Dinner? The Politics of Food in the 21st Century.” The results have exceeded even our own expectations: an array of impressive speakers, panelists, celebrity chefs, authors, and experts, as well as ancillary events put on by our town’s cultural and environmental organizations. We hope that you‘ll be excited and satisfied – as you are after a meal at one of Cape May’s many top restaurants. Our topic this year is both popular and controversial. We cover many aspects of “The Politics of Food” – the ethics of consumption, food movements, world hunger, health and nutrition, and a sustainable food environment. You can explore
these topics in beautiful Cape May – the nation’s fourth-largest fishing port, an international bird-watching destination, one of the nation’s top ten beach communities, a restaurant capital on the East Coast, and a national historic landmark. One of Cape May Forum’s founders observed, “The town of Cape May has the potential to be a living classroom.” Experience this delightful reality from September 15-25. Once you‘re refreshed, inspired, educated and entertained, tell your friends – and come back next year. With our thanks, Daniel Cohen Cape May Forum Founder Ronnie Cohen Cape May Forum Founder and Board Chair

Is there a class structure being developed for food labeling? Will healthier food only be available to wealthier people? 3) Vegetable and produce seasonality. Local and sustainable versus foreign imports and factory farmed and ethylene-gassed variety. Why does our produce look good but have no taste? 4) Meats, chicken and beef. CAPE MAY FORUM South Philadelphia comes down the shore in William Mastrosimone’s debut work, The Woolgatherer, now rewritten for this Cape May Stage premiere. Rose, a shy cashier prone to daydreaming, and Cliff, a rough-edge trucker with a solitary life, are an unlikely couple both looking for love in a world gone mad. Despite their mutual fear of commitment, these two lonely souls find comfort in each others’ uniqueness. Funny and poignant, this gripping play answers the question with humor, humanity, and just a touch of crazy. Production contains explicit language and adult themes. Wednesdays through Sundays (Sept. 14 – Oct. 22). Location: Cape May Stage’s Robert Shackleton Theater (corner of Lafayette & Bank), Cape May. Cost: $35 Adults, $30 Seniors (62+), $15 Students.
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16 10am-11am Aquaculture Facility Tour Presented by the Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences, Rutgers University The NJ Multispecies Aquaculture Demonstration Facility (MADF) was designed to scale-up experimental rearing of shellfish and fish to the commercial stage and to reuse the water cleared of suspended material by the shellfish to rear other species. The goal is to stimulate economic growth, provide employment opportunities, act as a business incubator, assist in aquatic restoration efforts and move New Jersey’s aquaculture production into the global market.
