And It All Comes Crumbling Down

The Beach Theatre, and with it the hopes of preserving an historic landmark, were demolished this past Monday. The crew tore into the building only minutes after receiving a permit from the city. Controversy will, of course, linger even after the building is gone. Dan Mathers

The Police Blotter

WINTHROP UNIVERSITY, South Carolina – An officer approached a car with a beer on the ground outside of it and smelled alcohol. The occupant admitted drinking beer from a cup, as he’d been told it was legal to drink in a vehicle as long as it wasn’t from an actual beer can.

Classic Quotations

A Story From The Past “No soldier can properly fight unless he is fed on beef and beer.” John Churchill “Prohibition makes you want to cry into your beer and denies you the beer to cry into.” Don Marquis “Why is American beer served cold? So you can tell it from urine.” David Moulton “24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case. Coincidence?” Stephen Wright “I work until beer o’clock.” Steven King “Beer. Because one doesn’t solve the world’s problems over white wine.” Anonymous “People who drink light beer don’t like the taste of beer, they just like to pee a lot.” Capital Brewery

CAPE May’s Battery 223 was built 900 feet from the ocean and camouflaged with sand and sod. To ships at sea, it appeared to be a sand dune. It was heavily reinforced, with seven-foot-thick walls in front and six-foot-thick walls along the sides and back. The bunker’s firepower came from two Panama gun mounts with six-inch cannons. Each of the guns weighed over ten tons, with the capability of firing a 100 pound armor-piercing shell more than 15 miles every 90 seconds. Ben Miller

Facebook Mystery Contest

Weird Word Of The Week

Cenosillicaphobia – This word is a very familiar and dear one to bartenders, as it refers to the fear of an empty glass. Okay, so it’s not really an “actual” word, but we figured if someone was going to go to the trouble of making up a word about what seems to us to be quite a legitimate fear, that’s good enough for us.

Cape May Point State Park

KNOW your way around Cape May? Think of yourself as the observant type? Feast your eyes on the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Kate Chadwick. If you think you know what establishment you’re staring at, then you have a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter – follow the instructions carefully. And, don’t worry if you have never used Facebook before – it’s easy! Just ask your six-year-old nephew for help. To enter, look for the mystery photo at facebook.com/ exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

Random Fact Of The Week

The mysterious number ‘33’ which appears on the labels of Rolling Rock beer was originally a printer’s error. The number refers to the 33 words that were contained in the brew’s original slogan. It has generated enough mystery over the years that the company has left it on the label.

Fortune Cookie Of The Week J “Quality isn’t expensive. It’s priceless.” J Once a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with spicy tuna roll. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editors

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

hortly after demolition began at the Beach Theatre, Facebook was inundated with comments, most of which included words like “sad,” “shameful,” and “disappointed.” Official designation and legal issues notwithstanding, the Beach Theatre was a landmark in Cape May. It opened at summer’s peak in 1950, and provided a cool escape from the busy beaches of town, where movie lovers could come together. The controversy that erupted in the years after its closing was sometimes heated, but heated controversy is the best evidence of citizens engaging in the future of our city. In the end, though, you can’t argue with the wrecking ball. Let’s all hope that the site is used wisely moving forward. September, as we know, means back to school for Cape May kids (and parents!). We’re sure you’ve noticed that our Athlete of the Week feature has returned as the new and improved Student of the Week (turn to page 81 for this issue’s offering). Just as a little background, these articles are the handiwork of the talented students in LCMR High School teacher Jackie Siscone’s News Media class. They write the features and take the photos each and every week – and somehow manage to meet their deadlines, which is more than we can say for many reporters. It warms our hearts here at EZ Global HQ to see all these talented young folks working so hard in the journalism business – gives us hope that in the future, all news won’t be fed to us via Twitter. On the subject of school, perhaps an Exit Zero photo refresher is in order. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – we try our level best, but we’re not always going

News, which is impressive enough in its own right. Congratulations on the award, Evan – well done. Of course, if you’re reading this it means we’re mere hours away from October, so let’s talk Oktoberfest: arriving this coming Saturday, October 1. The official kick-off for fall will be taking place on Historic Jackson Street from 10am to 5pm, and it’s sure to draw a crowd. “Oktoberfest is one of the annual events that bring people into Cape May...last year we had over 4,500 people stroll down Jackson Street,” says Doreen Talley, Event Director for the Cape May Chamber of Commerce. “This year we have added a second beer garden to the event, so now you can enjoy German and seasonal brews at both the Mad Batter and the Brown Cottage. The German band will once again be on the porch of The Red Cottage at 22 Jackson Street and your favorite foods will be back to delight your senses.” and if the prospect of beer still isn’t even to help you relax a bit, kindly take this moment to exhale. Summer has ended, folks, and we’re entering into those golden, care-free days of autumn. Take the time to enjoy Cape May now that you’ve got a bit more elbow room. It’s still warm enough to enjoy the beach, with the added bonus of less crowds. It’s still great weather for a bike ride, with the added bonus of traffic-free navigation. Even ice cream is still an option, especially at Bliss, where they’re rolling out fall-inspired flavors like pumpkin, apple pie, nutty caramel and cinnamon clove. They’ll be there at Carpenter’s Square Mall on weekends through the end of the year, or sign up for their “Ice Cream of The Month” Club and never miss your Bliss again.

to get the captions right every time. After all, there are only a few of us and there is a whole big bunch of you. So try to remember the cardinal rules when you see our man Aleksey approaching you with camera in hand: remember your penmanship class, and print neatly! And don’t forget that you can purchase photographs, too – the holidays are right around the corner, and they make great gifts. Give us a call or stop by the store to order your favorites, available in color or black and white and in three different sizes. Speaking of stopping by the store, we are officially ready for fall and all stocked up on your favorite Exit Zero and Cape Mayniac hoodies and sweatshirts (to go with your collection of T-shirts, baseball hats, and coffee mugs). So bundle up and pledge your allegiance to your favorite publication at the same time – it’s a win-win. We have them for kids too, so make sure your little one is the coolest in his or her class. While we’re discussing cool kids, Evan Hirsch, of the Montreal Inn Hirsch family, went and won himself an Emmy last week. Evan is a producer with CBS

Cape May Gets Hopped Up On Local Beer The crafty men who founded Cape May Brewery have big plans on tap... by Diane Stopyra

Although their malt still comes all the way from Germany, Cape May Brewing Company are doing their best to source locally in the future Aleksey Moryakov

W

HILE most college co-eds were preoccupied with drinking beer, Villanova student Chris Henke was concerned with brewing it. After graduation, with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chris landed a job designing satellites, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that what he really wanted to create was more beer. He and fellow Villanova grad, Ryan Krill, began a backyard brewing enterprise that led, last July, to the launch of the Cape May Brewing Company, located in the industrial complex of the Cape May Airport. When we last reported on this microbrewery – run entirely by Chris, Ryan, and Ryan’s father, Bob – the men had big plans for the future of their business, the only one of its kind in South Jersey. Today, fueled by the boys’ mutual love for Cape May, high-quality beer and local ingredients, these plans are well underway. This was an especially big month for the brewery, as its owners received the longawaited approval they’ve been hoping for. Up until now, the Cape May Brewing Company could provide tours and tastings by appoint-

ment only. On Friday September 23, however, Lower Township gave the go-ahead: the brewery – and tasting room – will be open to the public every Saturday from noon to 4pm. According to Ryan, being able to pop in would be a special experience for the local beer enthusiast. “It’s not like at some other brewery,” Ryan said, “where you might get an intern walking you around and showing you what the tanks do. The three of us are actually here, and I think people really appreciate that. It’s sincere. It’s honest.” Stopping by the brewery, Ryan explains, will be an opportunity not just to taste and tour, but to learn about the art of pairing beer with food. “You

It’s All About The Beer

Ryan Krill’s take on CMBC’s varieties Cape May IPA: A full-flavored brew that’s flowery, hoppy, refreshing and awesome. Cape May Stout: A hearty stout that tastes malty, roasty, toasty and awesome. Cape May Wheat: As a wheat should be, it’s sweet, balanced, toasty and awesome. 609 Honey Porter Stout: A lighter stout with banana and clove. Refreshing and awesome.

can pair a light beer with hot wings,” Ryan said, “but it won’t do anything for you. You’ll just get yellow fizz.” While the brewery boys have been waiting for this final approval from the township, they’ve been working hard on expanding their beer selection. Right now, the very smooth Cape May IPA is available exclusively at Cabanas Beach Bar and Grill, but the Cape May Stout and Cape May Wheat are also being produced, along with a 609 Honey Porter Stout. The latter is made with honey collected from the beehives of Rob Evans, a Marmora famer. “This exemplifies our mantra,” Ryan said. “We try to do as much local as we can.” A fourth beer, a cranberry wheat that will be released this fall, is brewed with local produce as well. Finally, a local farmer is growing the brewery’s hops, the flowers used to provide the aromatic and bitter components of a beer. In an effort to give back, Chris, Ryan, and Bob offer their leftover grain to local farmers who can use it as feed. According to Ryan, many Cape May restaurants have expressed interest in car-

rying these beers, especially after seeing the great response from Cabanas’ customers. While the men are excited about this possibility, they won’t rush into expanding. Rather than buying equipment, Chris has been designing, building and testing it all by hand. It’s a process that does slow down the brewery’s pace, but increases the resourcefulness of its owners. Chris found stainless steel tanks from recycling plants in Trenton, dented keg shells in various scrapyards, and hot water heaters on eBay, before welding and repurposing the pieces to fashion a fully functioning brew system. He’s reconfigured soda kegs for use in distribution and, appropriately, he’s distributed the beer using an old Mazda MPV that once belonged to his sister. The guys also built the cooling and fermentation rooms by hand. “This is the kind of thing we get geeked up about,” says Ryan. The brewery’s equipment might sound pretty makeshift, but it gets the job done, and the men are always working on making it better. When they opened, there were using a ten-gallon pilot brew system. Since then, they’ve upgraded to a 1.5 barrel brew house that can produce three times as much – up to six barrels, or 186 gallons, per week. Some things will never change. No matter how fancy the equipment gets, Cape May

Brewing Company will always strive to be a unifying force in the community. “Beer,” Ryan said, “is a common denominator for people. Just look at us. My dad was a senior executive in the pharmaceutical industry, I work in finance, and Chris used to design satellites. We all have diverse backgrounds, but this has brought us together.” According to Brittany Gager, a Cabanas waitress, Cape May Brewing Company is bringing locals and tourists together as well. “Every time people come here they get really excited to learn there is a local IPA; it’s the beer I sell the most. People want to know if they can visit the brewery. It makes them proud.” The other goal of the brewery is, as Ryan says, to be “part of the fabric of the community.” Ryan, Chris and Bob have been coming to Cape May their whole lives, and they love the idea of giving back to this community. This past weekend, the brewery entered a team into the City to Shore cycling event to benefit multiple sclerosis research, for which they raised over $9,000. The men would like to make the brewery a future destination for all Cape May cyclers as well by setting up bike racks outside. “We’d also like to sponsor local events,” Ryan said, “like the jazz festival, for example. We’re not just a brewery that happens to be in Cape May. We love Cape May.” For more information on Cape May Brewery or to book an appointment, visit capemaybrewery.com.

Every week our photographer Danielle O’Neal roams the streets of Cape May on a mission... to give away a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. But it’s not quite THAT easy – first, the lucky recipient has to answer three questions related to our issue theme, which this week is all about beer. This week’s winner is Crystal Breinig, 34, an insurance consultant from the North Wildwood. We found Crystal strolling the Washington Street Mall with her companion. Here are her answers to our piercing questions: What beer is known as “The King of Beers”? Budweiser What are the four main ingredients used to make beer? Yeast, hops, barley, and...? [Editor’s Note: Water!] This beer is known as “The Silver Bullet.” Coors Light Crystal wins a $20 gift certificate to The C-View for answering our questions. Congratulations and enjoy! Arts Editor Tom Sims reviews Stan Sperlak’s new exhibit of pastels at SOMA NewArt Gallery

ow much of our day is spent rushing? For me, it sometimes seems morning to night — sometimes late night. We’re busy with a lot of work that ends up not amounting to a whole lot in the end. Stan Sperlak, one of Cape May’s most celebrated artists, has a new collection of work that seems to say, “Slow down. Take it in.” His new exhibition, entitled “All About The Light,” is currently showing at SOMA NewArt Gallery. Is it possible to give yourself time to ref lect or simply ‘take it in?’ Sperlak offers insights into the moments an artist has when thinking of new pieces. “There’s a lot of time that you’re not painting where you’re thinking about the show” says Sperlak. “And you have to think about where you are in your life, where you are in your art – but at the same time, you just want to paint. So you have to give yourself the time.” There is no rushing through Sperlak’s new show. Don’t check your watch or glance down at your cell phone. Instead,

Stan Sperlak’s Sunny Day Cedars, one of many pieces that depict local pastoral landscapes. leave all that at home. Stand in front of this work and really take your time with it. The landscapes are filled with colors and textures that hold still the mood and spirit of some of Cape May’s most natural beauty. “The people that come to my show will see an incredible amount of new work,”

says Sperlak, “pastels that don’t look like pastels, scenes that are big, and some colors that they haven’t seen from me before.” Although there will be some new work and new colors, Sperlak hopes people are comfortable with the work they’ve come to see from him. “I want them to say this is recognizable work, work that the artist is in love with, the South Jersey that he loves,” he says. “If I can paint it bigger, that’s what I want. If I can paint it cleaner, more simply, and still get my point across – this is what I hope to do.” Sperlak’s work is a wonderful blend of smooth colors and calm landscapes. No study of southern New Jersey could be complete without spending time in the vast lands that make up so many of the farms and marshes that are the signature of the region. Sperlak captures these landscapes in his work — and does so with striking effects. Stan Sperlak’s new exhibit runs through October 17. You can find a new video featuring Stan Sperlak at the gallery’s website, somagallery.net. For more information, call SOMA NewArt Gallery at 898-7488.

Customer Service

I

The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone

dislike birthdays. It’s not that I mind getting older, and it’s not that I mind other people getting older; it’s that I mind all the fuss. Celebrating a birthday is a lot like celebrating the fact that you have a bellybutton. Everyone’s got one; it does not make you special. Don’t get me wrong, a party is fine. A dinner seems appropriate. Drinks with friends would be nice. But nowadays, birthday celebrations rarely seem to end there. I had a roommate in college who sported a tiara on her birthday and absolutely insisted that all of her friends plan something extravagant for each night of her “birthday week.” Our senior year, I participated in nearly every one of these expensive celebrations, including the one that fell on my own birthday. But by the end of the week, six days after the actual “holiday” (her word, not mine), I was spent. I’d had just about enough cake and Champagne to last a lifetime. My roommate was so hurt that I sat out the final installment of her birthday bonanza that she wouldn’t speak to me for the rest of her “birthday month.”

This same roommate was equally upset when I neglected to attend the party she threw for her dog’s first birthday, but that’s a whole other story. It’s not that I don’t love celebrating. In the last year, I’ve happily attended hurricane parties, bachelorette parties, tailgate parties, anything-but-clothes parties, full moon parties, even hooray-for-hump-day parties. Usually, I don’t care how silly the occasion is, I’ll toast to it; I am an equal opportunity partier. Except when it comes to birthdays. Maybe this makes me a birthday Grinch, but you might be one too, if you had my job. When you are a waitress, birthdays

become quite tiresome, as there are often several in one evening. I’m sorry, but hunting down candles during the middle of the dinner rush on a Saturday night for the grown woman who’s sporting a hot pink sash and a princess crown is just annoying. And I’m not sure why it is that I’m expected to sing. We don’t know one another, and frankly, my singing voice makes my own mother cringe. I’m happy to drop off your dessert and wish you well, but do I really have to serenade you, too? On any other day of the year, if a complete stranger came up to you and started singing, I’m sure you’d be tempted to run in the other direction. So why should your Great Aunt Millie give me the evil eye when I drop your cake and dash? I turn 26 on Thursday, and I don’t plan on doing anything special. I do plan on going out for drinks at some point this weekend, though, in order to celebrate absolutely nothing. If you’d like to join, you’re more than welcome; you’ll probably find me at the Mug. I don’t know what I’ll be wearing but, I can assure you, it won’t be a tiara.

Beer Must-Haves

The finest things from the shops of this charmed city... by Kate Chadwick

Vintage Beer Sign From Import Bazaar

Beer Hat From Just For Laughs

Beer T–Shirt From Just For Laughs

If you’re one of those beer drinkers who does not play well with others and prefers not to share, establish the ground rules in your BYOB beer garden with this cool vintage sign by Collector Metal Signs from Import Bazaar. And best of all, you can save your all-important beer money – it’s only $10.99! 306 Washington Street, 609-884-4999 capemaybazaar.com.

Who needs a lamp shade when you can wear a beer mug on your head? This stunning chapeau, made by Elope and modeled by good sport Just For Laughs employee J.M., is adjustable, so one can fit into it no matter how fat one’s head happens to be. And talk about your cocktail party conversation-starters… $24.95. 504 Washington Street, 609-884-5466.

If wearing a beer on your head is just not your style, keep it a little more low-key yet still get your point across with a funny tee. Ben Franklin’s sentiment about your favorite beverage is captured here on what is soon to be your favorite shirt from Just For Laughs. And like all Just For Laughs tees, it’s yours for the low price of $16.95. 504 Washington Street, 609-884-5466.

Beer Bread Mix From Love The Cook

Pretzels From Love The Cook

Pilsner Glasses From West End Garage

If you ARE able to part with a precious beer, we can’t think of anything better to do with it than to make this “Cheezy” bread mix by Bull Frog, available from Love The Cook. Simply add 12 ounces of beer (or lemonlime soda if you’re out of suds), bake and enjoy. So easy even an EZ staffer can do it. $4.99. 404 Washington Street, 609-884-9292, lovethecook.com.

If you’re not in the mood for all that baking, just open up a bag of pretzels, any beer lover’s best friend. These Uncle Jerry’s Handmade Pennsylvania Dutch Extra Dark Pretzels are especially great with a brew – or any beverage, for that matter. (And if you’re entertaining, just pour them into a bowl, and voila – for $3.95.) 404 Washington Street, 609884-9292, lovethecook.com.

For those more civilized beer drinkers among us, swigging out of a can simply will not do. If that sounds like you, we present your glassware: these lovely old frosted glass pilsners from Nonnie’s Closet at West End Garage (along with other bar accoutrements). The gold leaves are the perfect autumn touch. You’re welcome. 484 Perry Street, 609-7708261, thewestendgarage.com.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady My boyfriend and I have been together nearly a year. Recently while at his house I was looking for something in his bedside table (but not snooping!), when I stumbled across a ring box from Mary Ann’s Jewelers. Now I’m panicking – I don’t know what to do if he proposes! I love him, but I’m not ready to get married. What do I do? – Dear in Headlights Dear, Dear My goodness – we certainly have ourselves worked up, haven’t we? First, take a deep breath – you have jumped to a major conclusion on some circumstantial evidence. Have the two of you even discussed marriage? If you have, that’s one thing, but if not, it seems unlikely that he went from “Gee, you’re swell,” to “Let’s make this ‘til death do us part’” without so much as a hint.

Wise answers to perplexing questions

There are at least two legitimate possibilities here: your beau is holding the ring for a friend, who plans to pop the question to his own (probably equally nosy) girlfriend without risk of her “stumbling across” it. Or, your boyfriend may very well HAVE bought you a ring, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s an engagement ring. This happened to the Answer Lady during her first Christmas with her now-husband. When he pulled a ring box out from under the tree, she nearly passed out, but it was a lovely pearl ring, which is

the Answer Lady’s birthstone. It would be prudent for you to figure out what you will say in the event he does propose, but in the meantime, let this be a lesson to you: sometimes when we snoop around, we deserve the consequences, real or perceived. Dear Answer Lady My fiancé refuses to wear a wedding band. I picked a gorgeous one out for him that coordinates nicely with mine, but he is still balking. He says he’s just not a ‘ring guy,’ and that it would be dangerous in his line of work. Is this a red flag? – Miffed Dear Miffed My dear lady, you don’t mention what it is your husband-to-be actually does for a living, but certainly if he shucks clams or works with hand tools or heavy machinery (or is a gigolo), his excuse could be legitimate. Also, if he says he’s not a ‘ring guy’ while wearing a three-inch-thick chain around his neck and sporting a pierced ear or two, it could be a problem. Think about why you’re insisting on this, and remember, rings are not microchips: they can easily be removed. Or ignored.

h, autumn. A crispness in the air, the leaves changing colors, and finally, I can break out my fall wardrobe. Not that I have anything against shorts and T-shirts, but I’m more at home with jeans and long sleeves. My wardrobe’s holes became glaringly obvious recently. I don’t stockpile clothing; I’ve got one outfit for casual dressy, one outfit for formal dressy, etc. Unfortunately, my casual dressy pants didn’t survive the wedding in the hurricane. Which is how I found myself shopping for pants the day before a recent date. Besides the mega-marts, this area doesn’t have a whole lot to offer in the way of men’s clothing. It’s mostly aimed at tourists, at tourist prices. The first store I visited was picked over, typical for the end of the season. The second store had some pants that I really liked…for $135! For that kind of money I can buy most of the firewood I need for this winter. Or three tanks of gas. Or a lot of groceries. For $135, those pants had better make my butt look

AMAZING. And that’s how I found myself pantless. I considered how it might look if I showed up for dinner wearing a nice shirt, my newest underwear, and no pants. You only get one chance to make a first impression, so why not go big? After all, isn’t the goal of a date to wind up with no pants on? If I skipped ahead a few steps, wouldn’t that just be pragmatic? Fine, fine, I see your point. I dug out some old pants

from the back of the closet, sucked in my gut, and made it work. Guys don’t see clothing the way girls do. We’re hunters, not gatherers. Girls like to hit the stores, try things on, feel the textures, see the colors, and come home with a little bit of everything. Guys want to pursue that new shirt into one store, catch it, throw it down onto the counter, pull out our wallet and kill it dead. Yes, we are cavemen. Which is why we get even more confused when women tell us that the soiree you’re dragging us to requires clothing that’s office casual, or summer dressy, or whatever. Just tell us if our shirt should be tux, flannel, or Hawaiian. Sneakers, boots, or church shoes. Socks, yes or no. And if we can get away without pants. Want to dress up for dinner? Send an email to info@exitzero.us, I’ll be in touch, and we’ll dine at one of the Cape’s fine eating establishments. Afterwards I’ll write all about it, a combined date and restaurant review. Your name will be changed, the restaurant’s won’t. I can even wear pants… or not.

As if balancing basketball and Peer Leaders while maintaining a solid grade-point average weren’t enough, LCMR senior Bobby O’Donnell took on the challenge of playing varsity football this year just to train for basketball season. “Coach was pretty shocked, but he told me to go for it. He was supportive, but just told me, ‘Don’t get hurt,’” said O’Donnell. O’Donnell’s main support base is his parents Bob and Anne, and younger siblings Brian, 13, and Brooke, 15. O’Donnell shocked football fans at LCMR’s home opener versus Cedar Creek while subbing for junior safety Jackson Sole. Only intended to fill a spot on the field, O’Donnell made a key interception, running the ball nearly 70 yards to the Cedar Creek five-yard line. “I should’ve dove [into the end zone]. I guess I need more conditioning,” O’Donnell says about the play. “I tipped the ball, then looked up and saw it was still in the air, so I caught it and ran.” O’Donnell has a full schedule, yet still manages to practice basketball, getting in about 100 jump shots a day. This point guard and talented football player is being recruited by Gwynedd Mercy College for basketball, and is also looking into Stockton College. story by Amanda Vassar, Photo by Ryan Hunter

The Old Fogey

B

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

eer really is not the drink of a civilized man, as I told Ghengis Khan after a few ram’s horns of poorly brewed hops and water one fine evening. Mind you, I added, neither is pouring molten silver in a defeated opponent’s eyes and ears the mark of a civilized man, so beer is not the worst of it. The Great Khan did not slay me on the spot for such impudence, in part because he valued my counsel, in part because I said these things sotto voce, in English, a tongue he did not speak. Of course, beer has come a long way since that night in the smoking ruins of a razed city, but it still manages to bring out the barbarian in a man, I think, which is one of the many reasons I mistrust it. The odd beards favored by keen ale fans is another, and those peculiar pot bellies that keen beer drinkers tend to have is another still. And don’t even get me started on men breaking wind in public, which is a side effect of beer: in my day a gent did not let so much as a single tiny puff of gas escape his person until all ladies had departed the building,

no matter that he was about to be rent apart by the pressure, and then he would put on a loud recording of some popular beat combo on the stereo, and only then pump away to his heart’s content. Of course, I must blame those Scotchmen and the foul Irish for my mistrust of beer – those two races are typically surly until they have a pint or ten, and then become your best, most slobbering and effusive friend. This stage typically lasts ten or so minutes, and then transforms with-

out warning into the teary maudlin phase, where they proceed to cry on your shoulder and share with you their very darkest fears. And then, lightning-fast, the third phase comes ‘round: a red-faced and upraisedfisted fury directed at all and sundry, and usually ending in a monstrous brawl. I am no stranger to those of course, having drank away a few decades of my life with the boorish Ernie Hemingway, and can usually acquit myself well with aid of my karate training and the handy knobkerry I keep down my pants leg. Usually such a night would end with Ernie and myself propping up the bar, surrounded by bruised and battered Celts in various states of disrepair and unconsciousness. So, I tend to regard a fine beer with a mix of suspicion, respect and wariness, and limit my drinking to no more than a score of pints in a single evening: any more and I feel that I am less sharp in conversation and more prone to passing out face down in my supper plate (since this is often gazpacho, I am at some risk of drowning, which is most certainly not the way I plan to go).

The Cape May Crossword

None of that generic nonsense you see in other papers... a puzzle just for “Exit Zero”! By Jon Roth So YOU love crosswords? Great. Sit down, get a cup (or glass) of your favorite beverage, relax and enjoy this puzzle. The answers to the crossword are all related to this week’s issue. Our theme this week: beer. Activity Of The Week

L

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Take the Lighthouse Challenge

ighthouses are sign posts of the sea; mile markers on the maritime highway. They warn of danger and symbolize safety, and even for the landlubbers among us, they signal that we’re home. Because lighthouses must be unique to be of use, they incorporate a variety of shapes, heights and decoration. Lighthouse aficionados have their favorites, but the rest of us like our “home” beacon best. A tour of other New Jersey lighthouses – lovely as they are – will convince you that Cape May belongs at the top of your list. The New Jersey Lighthouse Society has organized the Lighthouse Challenge to expand your horizons. This two-day tour of eleven New Jersey lighthouses, scheduled for the weekend of October 15-16, will raise funds for lighthouse preservation. Of course, it’s not really a competition – the challenge is to visit all eleven in two days. Six, including Cape May, offer night climbs as well. There’s no official start or end to the challenge. You can begin at any participating lighthouse. Purchase a souvenir pamphlet for

$1 at your first lighthouse, and have it marked at each one you visit. More information about the Lighthouse Challenge can be found at lighthousechallengenj.org. Completing the Lighthouse Challenge requires a bit of driving, but then again, mid-October is a great time to catch the early autumn colors in New Jersey. Load the

car with some Springsteen and Bon Jovi, or an audio book of David McCullough’s 1776 – lighthouses and history go hand in hand. Stock up on snacks and enjoy the ride. On a map, the participating lighthouses form an open loop. The oldest one, Sandy Hook, plain white, marks the start of the loop. Next, visit the double towers of Navesink/ Twin Lights. The modest Sea Girt Light, on the Squan Inlet, looks almost like a home. Barnegat Light marks the north end of Long Beach Island, Tucker’s Island Light the south. Absecon, bold black and white, is the state’s tallest lighthouse; and Hereford Inlet is as famous for its extensive gardens as for its light. Make the turn at our favorite, Cape May, and then continue north to the East Point Light, where the Delaware Bay meets the Maurice River. Finn’s Point, of wrought iron, and Tinnicum, a steel skeleton, stand watch along the Delaware River, and mark the end of the tour. Take the Lighthouse Challenge. It’s a great excuse for a road trip, and when the adventure is over, the Cape May beacon will welcome you home. Next week: Haunted Harvest Happenings

Adoption fee is $95.

Max is a very calm and polite 32-pound, eight-year-old gentleman who is searching for a new home. He was found on the street by animal control and brought to the shelter. He’s going to need someone who will offer the space he needs to fully come out of his shell. If you’d be a good match, stop in and meet Slate today. Adoption fee is $35.

Jagger is biding his time, hoping to go into a forever home. He’s a younger fella’, and a bit shy. When he gets to know you, he’s fairly affectionate, but doesn’t like to be picked up. We’re confident he’ll be a perfect pet. If you think you can spare enough love for him, stop on by the shelter and give him a look! Adoption fee is $20.

HE PLAY which has been a funny but compelling addition to the Cape May Stage season, The Woolgatherer, will perform for three more weeks. We are hoping that everyone has the opportunity to see first-rate acting in a beautifully mounted production. Seniors pay half price on Friday, October 7. Sturdy Savings Bank is sponsoring a special ASL performance for the deaf community on October 14. Writer William Mastrosimone has loved this production of his play and will be coming back weekly to see it and talk with audience members. Cape May Stage is once again premiering a new version of a hit play. The Little Prince premiered here and went on to Bristol Riverside Theatre and the New Victory Theatre in New York. Charles Evered’s play, Class, premiered here and went on to perform in Los Angeles and Europe. This time, The Second Stage will be producing Florida Girls on Monday, October 3 at 8pm. Inspired by Lily Tomlin and Whoopi Goldberg, Nancy Hasty has created 15 hilarious characters in a story about a Florida beauty pageant circa 1965. The Pennsacola New Journal reviewed the show as “unique in its own right.” Florida Girls, the review said, “merits a place alongside Steel Magnolias.” The Second Stage is delighted to have found a time to bring Nancy Hasty to our community so soon after our production of Steel Magnolias. Tickets are only $20, and this is bound to be an entertaining evening of theatre. Cape May Stage exists, in part, to create new works of dramatic literature. On Mon-

Above: In a recent review, STAGE magazine hailed The Woolgatherer as “A truly beautiful production.” Reservations are strongly encouraged. Below: The New York Daily News declares Nancy Hasty’s Florida Girls is “a genuine stroke of satire, biting and funny.” day, October 17, we will present a reading of a new play starring Lynn Cohen, Adam Wade and Michael Basile. How To Make A Rope Swing takes place in a South Jersey town that is in the process of replacing an old schoolhouse. The play is written by Shawn Fisher who also designed the sets for The Woolgatherer, Topdog/Underdog, Happy Days, and Proof. The story concerns a beloved principal and custodian who is the longest-employed African American in the school’s history. A long-suppressed moment in history is revealed, and this leads to big changes for the town and everyone in it. This reading may well be the first step in the process of producing How to Make a Rope Swing in a future season. Tickets for any of the above events can be purchased by calling 884-1341, or by going online to capemaystage.org. Celebrating the written word with the finest actors is what defines Cape May Stage. We encourage you to join our growing community.

Bird Droppings

I

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

f you live in Cape May, you’ve probably heard a lot of English spoken recently. “What of it?” you’re thinking. English is what most people speak in this corner of the planet. Ah, but I’m not talking American English. I’m referring to English English. The kind they speak where the language was forged. The kind people who carry United Kingdom passports speak. “Oh, right. That kind of English. Yeah, now that you mention it, I have heard a lot of proper English spoken hereabouts.” Yes you have. And it’s not because the UN is in session and it’s not due to the exchange rate (well, maybe in part). It has a great deal to do with birds. You see, more and more English birders have come to regard Cape May as their playing field. They’ve adopted it. And this is very good news for people who own restaurants and rent homes and operate various lodgings in Cape May. British birders are very good for business. Why? Glad you asked. First, there are lots of them. In fact, millions. If you think bird watching is popular

in the US (and if you live in Cape May you’ve seen how popular it is) you should see how passionate people are about birds in the UK. I just got back from the British Bird Fair. There were over 30,000 attendees. Here in the US a really, really good number for such an event is 1,000. Another reason British birders are in high demand is tenacity. They come. They

stay. A week, or two, or more. People who rent houses and run lodging love people who stay for protracted periods. Europeans, on average, enjoy much more vacation time than we do (about five weeks a year on average). And, of course, when they go to the trouble to cross an ocean, they don’t arrive on a Friday and drive home Sunday night. Also, Cape May is an easy sell. Not everyone who lives in the UK is a birder. Some people who are birders are even married to non-birder spouses. The perennial problem for people who like to travel to world-class birding destinations is: “What do I do with my non-birding companions?” Well, in Cape May, that problem is solved. There is lots to do here. Even doing nothing is a pleasure. Consider: You are a British birder and you have a non-birding other. You can travel to the Amazon Basin and live in a primitive camp where chicken is served a different way every night and the atmosphere in your

Bird Droppings ? From Page 99 room replicates the environment found in the womb or... You can go to Cape May. Enjoy fine dining. Enjoy the beach. Enjoy sleeping in an air-conditioned room. Not much room for debate there. Yes, you’ll be hearing a lot of English spoken in Cape May in September and October. And you are probably hearing a lot of funny English, too. Not, not American English. English with a bit of a Norwegian or Swedish or Dutch inflection. It turns out that the Scandinavians are even more nuts about bird watching than the British. And they have to cross an ocean, too. You could do a lot worse than be a bird in Cape May. So many admirers. You could also do a lot worse than be a business owner in Cape May. So many patrons with European appetites. If you’re a business owner and would like to welcome some of those European visitors that are coming to Cape May, you’d best contact Marleen Murgitroyde (BirdCapeMay@njaudubon.org) and ask her how you can become a recommended business. Or you can spend an enjoyable few hours on the Hawk Watch Platform,

Have you seen a British birder? chatting with our visitors. Consider going on a Cape May Bird Observatory bird walk – there’s a few to choose from every week – and one every Monday morning at 7:30am with Pete Dunne that meets in the parking lot at The Nature Conservancy on Sunset Boulevard. You can stop by the Cape May Bird Observatory and ask any of the staff or volunteers what is happening throughout the week. They’ll be glad to help you and you’ll see why the Cape May Bird Observatory is THE place to come for all your nature needs – and not to be missed.

The CMBO, located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point (884-2736), is open every day from 9:30am to 4:30pm. While you're there, check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars, pick up a free map and schedule of daily walks and programs for the season, take a look at the sighting sheets to check what's being seen, scan the bookshelves or pick up a bargain from the vintage books section, look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise (including a terrific lithograph done just for the Cape May Bird Observatory), or just browse around. Sit outside on our garden benches and enjoy the birds at the feeders and the view of Lake Lily. If you can’t make it in person, visit us online at BirdCapeMay.org – where birding Cape May is only a click away! Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey's own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at the CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.

The Theater Column

Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews East Lynne Theater Company's "Dulcy"

w

e've all heard it said: "In difficult times, we can use a few laughs." Yet so many of us who've been around a while complain that comedy is not what it used to be. I watch what television is calling "comedy," and admittedly I laugh sometimes, but often I'm perplexed. "Is this supposed to be funny?" I ask my teenage daughters – thinking it's a generational thing. They don't seem too sure, either. East Lynne Theater Company's new production of the George S. Kaufman and Marc Connelly play, Dulcy, harkens back to earlier comedies – especially reminiscent of I Love Lucy and the screwball comedies you might find on Turner Classic Movies. "So many of the Broadway writers responsible for comedies in the '20s and '30s went on to write the screenplays for those great movies and television favorites," says Gayle Stahlhuth, Artistic Director for East Lynne Theater Company. George Kaufman was a prolific writer who won the Pulitzer Prize twice in the 1930s for Of Thee I Sing and You Can't Take It With You.

Megan McDermott and Drew Seltzer star in Dulcy, playing through October 15 at First Presbyterian He also received a Tony in 1951 as director of Guys And Dolls. ELTC, dedicated to presenting American masters like Kaufman, has had great success with his plays. Stahlhuth found a rare copy of Kaufman and Connelly’s To The Ladies a few years ago and sent it to Kaufman's daughter, Anne, who had never seen the play or the manuscript. Anne was not impressed. "She asked us to please do anything but that

play – she even offered to give us rights to any other Kaufman play.” Stahlhuth persisted and produced To The Ladies, which Anne saw and enjoyed so much she gave ELTC permission to do Kaufman’s Butter And Egg Man royalty-free. With a cast of eleven, Dulcy is the largest show ELTC has ever produced. You’ll think of Lucy and Desi when you hear this story of a woman going overboard to help her husband, thereby causing some comedic mayhem. "At the moment in the play where everything is imploding on stage, the audience cannot help from laughing,” says Stahlhuth. This play moves like a charm, and anyone who enjoys an old-fashioned screwball comedy will leave saying “I love Dulcy.” So take a break from these troubled times to enjoy a classic comedy that more than remembers the past – it embraces it! The show runs through October 15, Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8pm. There is no show on October 5, and an added performance on October 9 at 7:30pm. Located at The First Presbyterian Church on 500 Hughes Street in Cape May. For reservations and further information, call 884-5898 or visit eastlynnetheater.org.

The Dating Column

I

Stella Dixon's take on romance on Old Cape Island

once knew a girl, we’ll call her Sarah, who agreed to marry a great guy, Charlie. Charlie was perfect, or as close to perfect as they come. He brought home the bacon AND cooked it for breakfast. When Sarah called off the engagement because she worried someone better might be out there, Charlie waited for her to come around. In the meantime, Sarah got, um, intimate with a number of Cape May men. Eventually, she realized that no one would ever compare to the catch she’d walked away from, and she went crawling back. Luckily for her, perfect Charlie was still waiting, ring in hand. The last time I saw Sarah, I thought she’d be feeling grateful, but this was not so. “You know,” she said over lattes at Higher Grounds, “I just don’t think I can marry Charlie after all.” Between sips, she gave me the reason why: He refuses to salsa dance. Apparently, Charlie never minds when Sarah goes dancing with her friends, but he refuses to set foot on a dance floor himself. Oh, the horror. Sarah is what you call a high-maintenance woman – the kind of girl who expects flowers every Valentine’s Day and every, you know,

Tuesday. She needs to hear from her man that she’s beautiful; she needs to hear from her man all the time. She must be showered with gifts, attention, reassurance. She must celebrate a three-and-a-half month anniversary. And it’s not enough that her man be perfect; he must have rhythm as well. Sure, this sounds over the top. Annoying, even. But the truth is, wonderful guys with so much to offer, like Charlie, often spend nights pining away for the Sarahs of the world.

Perhaps it has something to do with how men are wired for the chase. They may say they like an easy-going girl, but in reality, they want to work hard for the prize. This is a problem for me, as I am not a high-maintenance woman. I try to be. I give it my best. But it’s not in my nature to be needy. Actually, that’s not true. I’m needy all the time, but it’s not in my nature to let anyone know. Tim went on vacation to Mexico this week, and when he asked what he should bring me, I told him I wanted a rock. Not a diamond rock, a rock-rock. I didn’t want him spending money or prime beach time searching for a souvenir. My friends think this is hilarious. Apparently, I’m the girl with rocks for brains. Now, with Sarah and Charlie on my mind, I regret not having asked for something pricey, garish, and awkward to transport instead. While I'm at it, I’m thinking I should also start demanding flowers, salsa lessons, and lots of attention that I’ll accept unappreciatively. Otherwise, I might just end up alone. An easygoing girl, I’m starting to see, is a lot like a rock souvenir – low-maintenance, and just as easy to pick up and drop again.

Pre-approved or Pre-Qualified for a Mortgage? A Pre-qualification letter is simply a letter issued before you have been qualified for a mortgage. A Pre-approval letter is a letter issued by a lender after a buyer has been qualified, but before they have received their approval. Also, unlike a pre-qualification letter, a buyer must provide proof of their income & have their credit worthiness reviewed by a lender. House hunting with a pre-approval letter shows the seller that you have met the conditions required to qualify for a mortgage, & that you can afford to make the serious offer.
