The Police Blotter
OCHARD PARK, New York – A woman complained of threatening text messages from a Syracuse man to whom she had sold her car. She said she received a “derogatory” text from him, saying the power steering didn’t work, and that, “Karma will come and get you.”
Classic Quotations
A Story From The Past “Bean there, done that.” Flying Fish T-shirt “I think so, Brain, but if we give peas a chance, won’t the lima beans feel left out?” Pinky “Some people are fat, some people are lean. But I want you to show me the person who doesn’t like butterbeans – Yay!” B-52’s “Lima lovers live longer.” Flying Fish T-shirt “Screw you – give me back my lima beans.” Raj, The Big Bang Theory “Word to my mama, I’m out of my lima bean, Don’t wanna see what that drama mean, get some Dramamine.” Cory Gunz “Better beans and bacon in peace than cakes and ale in fear.” Aesop
One year after opening the Christian Admiral, Reverend Carl McIntire founded the religious Shelton College in a building he had constructed directly behind the hotel. Reverend McIntire also paid to have the Weightman Cottages (now Angel of the Sea) and the Morning Star/Evening Star buildings relocated to the eastern side of town, adding to his organization’s holdings and preventing the buildings from being demolished. Weird Word Of The Week
Molybdenum – An essential trace element in plant nutrition, molybdenum is used in fertilizers, dyes, enamels and reagents. Lima beans have a particularly high molybdenum content, and eating them may help people with a sensitivity to sulfites, since sulfite sensitivity is often due to low levels of molybdenum in the body.

Random Fact Of The Week
lima beans contain a potentially dangerous cyanide compound and should never be eaten raw. Only those varieties with the lowest cyanide levels are legally allowed to be sold in the United States. Fortunately, cooking the beans deactivates the cyanide compound.
Fortune Cookie Of The Week J “Seeing your smile always brings smiles upon others” J Once a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with crab rangoon. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editor
I
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
T’s a topsy-turvy old world down on the 700 block of Beach Avenue. On the southern part of the street, an iron skeleton has emerged, promising a new convention hall (though you’re a member of the glass half-full club if you think that skeleton will be a fully formed, functioning body by Memorial Day, 2012, as the city has been promising). A much sadder picture emerged across the road last week, when bulldozers began tearing down the old Beach Theatre. Sad, yes, but surprising... no. The fight for the old movie house has been going on for a few years, and the outcome always looked inevitable, at least from where I was watching. The Beach Theatre Foundation, set up to save the building, had a leader who boasted a heady resumé in the New York advertising world, but who kept a very low profile around these parts. The organization seemed enthusiastic but had a board that was lacking members with serious business acumen and fund-raising skills... witness the fact that they had to borrow $100,000 from the city. Compare that to the efforts of Cape May Stage (full disclosure: I’m a board member of that organization), which raised around $1.2 million in three years to carry out a beautiful renovation of their playhouse on Lafayette Street and you get my point. If an organization can’t raise $100,000 for a cause that was going to demand around $12 million to buy the property and then develop it, then that cause feels a little pie-in-the-sky. It also seemed illogical that some members of the foundation were arguing vehemently against building a proper convention hall, which would likely attract millions of dollars in revenue to our town, while fight-
ing to save an establishment that, like it or not, is part of a dying breed, and which likely wouldn’t have brought much business into town at all. It’s wonderful that movie theaters still exist in this world (I try to go see a movie once every other week), since the doom-and-gloom merchants were saying they would be gone by the end of last century, killed by the video store. Of course, the video store has already been killed by Netflix and digitally streamed movies, but that’s another story. However, there was no future for the Beach Theatre – not with the multiplex in Rio Grande. And no one should forget that when the Beach Theatre WAS open, it was usually sparsely attended. I can say this with a smidgen of authority because I eschewed the Rio multiplex in favor of the Beach when it was being run by the foundation (from memory, it was the summers of 2008 and 2009), and not once were there ever more than a dozen people in there with me. And I must have seen ten movies there, trying to ignore the lumpy seats that made me squirm. I don’t know too many people who didn’t
love the idea of keeping the movie house there, but given the lack of financial support the foundation got, I don’t think there are too many people around who thought it was a viable option either. I do admire the efforts of people like Bernie Haas and Susan Tischler, who worked and lobbied hard to keep the dream alive, though, really, that’s all it ever was: a dream. I hope that something befitting this beautiful town goes up in its place... Franks, the owners of the property, have never shown one iota of public spiritedness throughout this affair. I trust that the city’s agencies will be all over them to ensure that the development that sprouts up doesn’t blemish the beachfront. MY instinctive reaction to the news that the fall jazz festival has been canceled is one of disappointment. But it sounds like the smart thing to do if the festival is to survive, and it HAS to survive. The demolition of the old convention hall proved to be disastrous for the festival, costing it tens of thousands of dollars in lost revenue. It would be good to believe that the new hall, complete with bells and whistles, will at least be open for the fall 2012 festival, assuming there is one. In the meantime, I wish the revamped board all the good things in the world as they attempt to get back on track. At the very least, you can have as many free ads in Exit Zero as you need to promote fundraisers. A quick girls’ night suggestion for tomorrow. Cape Trinity Catholic, the grade school Our Lady Star of the Sea pupils now attend, is hosting an All For The Girls night of shopping. Tickets are $15 for lots of vendors, appetizers, wine and fun. Painting The Town Green
Lima lovers gear up for West Cape May’s 27th Annual Lima Bean Festival... by Diane Stopyra
W
This Saturday, October 8, Wilbraham Park will be all about the beans Aleksey Moryakov
HILE other beach towns are shutting down for the off-season, West Cape May is preparing to remind us once again that, on Cape Island, there is no such thing. At Wilbraham Park this Saturday, October 8, the Borough of West Cape May will sponsor the 27th Annual Lima Bean Festival. At the event, the only of its kind in the world, 100 vendors and thousands of guests will paint the town green. What started as a celebration of Cape May’s storied agricultural past has grown into a quirky good time for all ages. Like the city itself, the vegetable of the hour is still very much in-season, rich in history and full of surprises. Long before European settlers set foot on the Cape May peninsula in 1621, the Lenni Lenape Indians were living – and farming – here. They grew all sorts of indigenous crops, including the lowly lima. According to explorer logs, the Lenape shared their knowledge of how to cultivate the bean with the newcomers. As it turns out, 300 years later, growing conditions on Cape Island were still ideal. After the Great Depression,
the little garden vegetable was viewed as a potential source of income. By the 1950s, as many as 125 farms in the county boasted a bounty of limas. Les Rea, a local, thirdgeneration farmer, was even commissioned by Hanover Foods of Pennsylvania to grow limas commercially, contributing to West Cape May’s unofficial labeling as “lima bean capital of the world.” In 1985, while looking for a way to promote his town, West Cape May Mayor John Vasser, who’d come from a long line of lima farmers himself, spoke the fateful words: “The only thing we’ve got going is beans.” While meant to be slightly tongue-in-cheek,
lima logistics What you need to know in a nutshell... or pod Festival will be held 9am-5pm on October 8 at Wilbraham Park. Rain date is October 9. Admission is free. All proceeds benefit the Shade Tree Commission, which maintains Wilbraham Park. The Lima Bean Queen is crowned at 3pm.
the statement rung true enough for the town to run with it, and the Lima Bean Festival was born. But in 1995, to the dismay of Les and his wife, Diane, Hanover Foods dropped their contract. Limas, the company decided, would come cheaper from California and Guatemala. And besides, enticing vegetables that had gotten little air-time previously, like white asparagus, were now taking center stage. In the collective mind of the public, limas just weren’t as sexy as they used to be. Eventually, the town lost its title as lima capital. “This,” Diane says, “was a very bad year.” West Cape May considered nixing the festival altogether, but the event had become too ingrained in the culture of the town and, for the folks who attend every year, too much fun. Diane Flanegan, owner of Flanegan Art and Framing on Broadway and the festival’s director, has seen the event continue to grow with each passing year. “People from all over the country are interested,” she said. “I’ve had calls from Texas and California. People build vacations around this.”

Lima Lovers ? From Page 21
The number one reason for this, Diane explains, is the food. These are not the plain, mushy limas you remember feeding to your dog under the table as a kid. Vendors will be carrying everything from lima bean soup, to chili, cookies, casserole, succotash, and lima-flavored ice cream from Bliss. For local restaurants, like Gecko’s and Key West Tacos, this is a chance to showcase what they can do. Of course, just plain limas, fresh from local farms, will be available as well. For those who won’t touch a bean, other vendors will be carrying such non-lima favorites as sweet potato pie, lemonade and crab cakes. But the West Cape May lima festival is not just about the eats. Other vendors will be selling lima-themed earrings, birdhouses, pottery, and artwork. Then, of course, there are the clothes. Susan Lotozo of Flying Fish Studio is one vendor whose bean-themed T-shirts have become a West Cape May staple. “The festival is such a funky, lively thing,” she says. “It appeals to me in a whimsical kind of quirky way.” And Sue’s merchandise captures this whimsical quirkiness she’s so fond of. Shirt logos from years past have been inspired by everything from Star Trek (“Bean me up, Scotty”), to Julia Child (“Bean appetit!”), to popular movies (“Eat, love, limas”).
Sue is constantly brainstorming ideas for her T-shirts, which have become local collectors’ items. “The one that woke me up in the middle of the night and had me shooting straight out of bed,” she said, “is Pirates of the Limabbean, featuring several swashbuckling limas.” Some of the designs have been so popular, Sue has chosen to carry them year-round in her store. One such design is a peace sign that was made by arranging actual limas on a silk- screen printer. Sue has a special reason for being invested in the festival, as she is a former member of the royal family. Since the event’s inception, there has been a crowing of the Lima Bean Queen and, since 2003, a Lima Bean King. Their majesties, whose names are chosen from slips of paper filled out by festival-goers and pulled out of a ballot box, have ranged in age from three to upwards of 70. Also in the way of entertainment, the Lima Bean Festival features live performances from local bands. This year’s lineup includes two Cape May favorites – the blues rock band, Bluebone, and Mad Batter regulars, Robin Hippel and Amy Hufana. If you stop by, you may even hear a version of the Lima Bean Blues, played for years following the collapse of the Hanover contract: “We’re having a celebration at the park in West Cape May. We don’t need no limas, we’ll have the festival anyway.”

Every week our photographer Danielle O’Neal roams the streets of Cape May on a mission... to give away a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. But it’s not quite THAT easy – first, the lucky recipient has to answer three questions related to our issue theme, which this week is all about lima beans. This week’s winner is James, 37, an attorney from Missouri. We found James strolling the Washington Street Mall with his (somewhat distraught) baby girl. Here are his answers to our piercing questions: Do you like lima beans? Yes I do. Lima is the capital of what South American country? Peru. Name three other kinds of beans. Refried beans, green beans and garbanzo beans. James wins a $25 gift certificate to Bliss Organic Ice Cream for answering our questions. Congratulations and enjoy! PHOTOGRAPH BY Danielle o’neal

The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone
AST week I went to see the new Kate Winslet movie, Contagion. It stunk. It’s a film about a new contagious disease that spreads like, well, a contagious disease. It’s one of those movies where lots of people die but it doesn’t matter all that much because the viewer never gets all that invested. The best part was making fun of the characters’ silly-looking hazmat suits. As far as movies go, it wasn’t very memorable, at least not for me. My date, on the other hand, was totally freaked out. “The average person,” Kate Winslet had warned ominously, “touches his face 3,000 times a day.” In between, we’re touching all kinds of germy things. That’s plenty of opportunity to spread disease. My date managed to leave the theater without touching any railings or door handles. I, on the other hand, wasn’t fazed. “Oh, please,” I told him, “live a little.” This is how I normally am. I’m not paranoid. I don’t carry hand sanitizer around in my pocket. I’ll eat a Key West taco with my bare hands without thinking twice. I don’t

get flu shots. I have been known to share water bottles and sometimes, I’ve gulped right out of the orange juice carton. Even in the commercial kitchen where I work, I’ve shared pieces of chocolate cake with my coworkers and, for my own dinner, I abide by the five-second rule. But even I have my limits. Yesterday, a customer pushed me right to them. The woman who dined on table one was sick. Coughing-up-a-lung sick. And she had some kind of oozing eye infection. Every time I went to the table, I watched her rub her eye before touching her menu. Her plate. Her bread basket. The tablecloth. My elbow. When she tried to hand me her wine
list, I held out the tray I was holding and motioned for her to place it there instead. Then, keeping it at arm’s length, I ran out of the dining room and sprayed it down with Windex. Every time I so much as looked at that table, I washed my hands and wished I were wearing a hazmat suit. When this woman’s dinner took longer than usual to hit the table, she became upset. When the food that finally arrived was unsatisfactory, she decided to leave in a huff. “Really,” I said, from a safe distance away and without inhaling, “don’t go.”But my half-hearted attempt to keep this woman from walking out didn’t work – thank god. They left no tip behind, which was fine by me, as I would have had to burn it, anyway. As a waitress, I deal with a lot of nasty things – poor attitudes, adult tantrums, you name it. But at least none of these things are contagious. So if you promise, dear reader, to stay at home when you’re ill, I promise to do the same. Because as often as I’ve complained about my uniform, I much prefer an apron to a silly-looking hazmat suit any day.

Lima Bean Must-Haves
The finest things from the shops of this charmed city... by Kate Chadwick
Lima Bird House From Bird House
Lima T-shirt From Flying Fish Studio
Lima Canvas From Flying Fish Studio
Follow the lima bean road to these adorable and brightly colored bird houses from our friends Ken and Sharon at Bird House of Cape May. Hand-painted and embellished with the bean of the moment, the humble lima, your favorite feathered friends will be thrilled to call these places home. $18. 109 Sunset Boulevard, 609-898-8871, birdhouseofcapemay.com.
Wasn’t it the Lennon-McCartney team who said “All you need is peace, love and limas?” No? Well, it must have been those other geniuses over at Flying Fish. Modeled here by Casey is the lovely shirt, with “peace, love, limas” emblazoned on the front and this way cool lima peace sign on the back. $15. 130 Park Boulevard, 609-884-2760, theflyingfishstudio.com.
Once again, our friends at Flying Fish solve an age-old quandary – what to do with leftover silkscreen canvas? Why, you paint them with lima beans and sell them as cool, funky, one-of-a-kind art pieces, that’s what. The perfect touch of green for any room in your house, and a bargain at $30 each, or two for $50. 130 Park Boulevard, 609884-2760, theflyingfishstudio.com.
Lima Bean Baseball Cap From Flying Fish
Glass Box From Flanegan Art and Framing
Jewelry From Flanegan Art and Framing
Strolling around a festival is serious business, so protect your face with a baseball cap that also proclaims your lima allegiance. Plus, you never know when you need to duck the paparazzi. Also from the folks at Flying Fish, which is apparently Lima Bean Central. Look for their new merchandise at the festival, too. $10. 130 Park Boulevard, 609884-2760, theflyingfishstudio.com.
Check out this gorgeous handmade stainedglass box – perfect for stowing jewelry, change and any other miscellaneous trinkets looking for a home. It’s a little encapsulation of West Cape May in a gorgeous, shiny and totally original rectangular container. $50 and it’s worth every penny – would make a great gift for your favorite Cape May lover. 324 Broadway, 609-884-9325.
These beautiful lima jewelry pieces are just the thing to finish off any festival-going ensemble. A lovely light lima green color, you can choose from earrings, bracelet, or a necklace, or declare your devotion to the almighty legume by wearing all three at once. And at these prices, it shouldn’t be a problem - prices range from $10-25.324 Broadway, 609-884-9325.

The Answer Lady
T
Wise answers to perplexing questions
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady My boss is finally retiring next week. She’s a nightmare to work for, she might actually be crazy, and for the past few years she’s been doing her best to run the company into the ground. I like the new boss, but every time she asks me a question I feel like my answer is trashing the old boss. I don’t want to get a reputation for being THAT guy, but I also want to be honest with the new boss so we can fix the business. Is honesty the best policy here, or should I just clam up? – Still Gainfully Employed Dear Employed The Answer Lady’s initial impulse is to tell you to shut your big mouth and save your job at all costs, given the precarious state of the economy these days. However, it depends upon your priorities. Let’s decide what is really most important to you: striv-
ing to make the company a better place, or attempting to control the thoughts of others. The latter is always a losing proposition, and goes hand-in-hand with the Answer Lady’s mantra that we cannot control other people (or what they think, and ESPECIALLY what they say), only ourselves. Well, most of us can control ourselves, but the Answer Lady digresses. If the incoming boss is totally new to the company and blissfully unaware of the current boss’s craziness, you should be steering her gently into non-crazy land as best you
can. If she was promoted from within, then she already knows about the current boss’s craziness and has likely formed an opinion, so whatever you say won’t have much of an effect. In either case, she apparently has a brain in her head, and if she is a good leader, she will not hold your (carefully phrased, right?) comments against you, no matter how much they sound like boss-bashing. Just do your job well, and by the way, perhaps a little compassion is in order for the crazy lady. Although, as the Answer Lady’s brother likes to say, “crazy lady” is redundant. Dear Answer Lady Why do people keep insisting on calling an event the “First Annual Whatever?” Don’t they know something can’t be annual until it happens more than once? An initial event can be inaugural, but not annual. There was an inaugural Lima Bean Festival in 1985, not a “First Annual Lima Bean Festival.” It drives me crazy. Am I a hopeless word nerd? Or should I take comfort in knowing that I’m right and they’re wrong? – Grammar Geek Dear Geek – Yes. And yes.

Diligent aspiring fashion guru Cody Bryan sees fashion as both a hobby and an art form. The 17-year-old LCMR senior hopes to attend college with a double major in fashion and international business, and under consideration are the University of Delaware, the Fashion Institute of Technology and New York University. Bryan is currently ranked number one in the senior class, and is enrolled in all honors and advanced placement classes, forcing him to prioritize. He admits the work involved takes up an exorbitant amount of time, but says it is all worth it, and shrugs off being number one. “Everything happens for a reason. I try to motivate myself,” says Bryan. Bryan balances his work in school with his role on the varsity swim team. Sports run in the family, as his brother Chase, 23, was an ice hockey star at St Augustine Prep, and sister Lindsay, 20, was a standout basketball player at LCMR. Bryan is also vice president of the senior class, a peer leader, and an active member in National Honor Society. Parents, Lisa and Cecil, of Erma, are no doubt very proud of Bryan’s successes. He seems ready to achieve all the goals he sets. story by Hannah Lamey, Photo by Ryan Hunter

efore I slept with my friend Linda, she pointed out to me, I slept with her husband Kevin. No, no, never fear, dear reader, I’m not kinky. Well, not that kinky. Kevin and I roomed together in England years ago, and now Linda, visiting from Australia, was my houseguest. After 27 hours on a plane from Melbourne, her sense of humor was a little off. And her bed was in the loft, while mine was downstairs. Like many guys, I’m no good with houseguests. First comes cleaning. I am not a slob, but as a bachelor my standard of cleanliness isn’t very close to godliness. So for a guest – particularly a guest who I know is going to gossip about me to other friends, and especially friends who know my sister – the house gets the full treatment. Dark corners get vacuumed, the cobwebs get removed from the even darker corners, the bathroom and kitchen and floors and dog all get scrubbed, and all that random flotsam and jetsam that accumulates around a house is either trashed or shoved into a drawer or closet. Making the house
look presentable for a guest is a lot of work. On the other hand, picking Linda up at the airport was a piece of cake. Guys are great at navigating airport traffic and slinging luggage into the car. Going to Uncle Bill’s for a breakfast was something she’s still raving about: that was a nobrainer. Making sure that the proper towels are waiting in the bathroom for her: not so easy. And then she started throwing curveballs, like: “I forgot my hairdryer.”

“Do you have real sugar or just Equal?” and “What do you mean you don’t have a tea kettle?” Luckily, Linda speaks her mind and takes care herself, and I don’t have to worry about her too much. When she’s hungry, she looks in the cupboard for food. When she wants to use the internet, she demands my wi-fi password. When she’s tired, she tells me she’s taking a nap. She recognizes that I have work to do – like writing this column – and gives me time to do it. It’s a lot easier than having a high-maintenance guest who needs to be waited on, have their every whim satisfied, and expects me to create a schedule of activities to fill up their day. Hey, I’m not Julie, your cruise director. Be my guest for dinner. Send an email to info@exitzero.us, and we’ll go to dinner at one of the Cape’s fine eating establishments. Afterwards I’ll write all about it, a combined date and restaurant review. Your name will be changed, the restaurant’s won’t. If things go well, we can make plans for you to be a guest in my home.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
have a solution to our lima bean problem. I have – and know from the many letters I receive on the subject that you have, too – grown weary with the mass production of the humble bean. It’s all fine, but does not thrill the way it used to when we first smuggled the stolen plants back from Mesopotamia in the lining of a horse’s saddle. We have of course pioneered the cross-breeding of the bean with other plants, here in Cape May, and had some notable success with our lima bean/cocoa plant hybrid, which gave the consumer great energy and talkativeness combined with a noticeable uptake in dietary fiber. Sadly, and surely in error, an unmarked Chinook helicopter landed in our limocoa field in the dead of night and a team of masked men in black torched the whole thing with flamethrowers. I am sure I identified a jacket patch with the letters DEA, which I instantly concluded stood for Dastardly European Agriculturalists: those Europeans have always envied our success, and I am certain that they took the time to snatch a seedling and that little
cafés in Amsterdam will even now be selling healthy and invigorating limocoa-bean brownies. Really, I sometimes wonder why I (almost) singlehandedly saved them from the Germans. Twice. So, to give us the edge again, I have been studying recent advances in plant gigantism and am sure I can replace all of our lima bean crops with one massive plant. That’s right, every acre will supply nutrients for the roots of one single lima bean plant: The Limassive Bean. Early estimates have
the dimensions of the final bean at around a mile long, half a mile high and the same wide. We will need to plant beacons atop it to prevent planes from colliding, and possibly reinforce our fine island here to prevent the bean from sinking us. Also, we will need a few volunteers (a dozen at most, every day) to be pulped for the nutrients the plant will need at the end. I have talked to the local police force, who are very supportive and say that they will hand over visitors who have committed grave crimes such as not feeding the meter/using the beach without a pass/giving the officers lip when stopped for no good reason. Also, this newspaper will have a weekly lottery, and will name one person per issue who has been selected to be plant-food: whoever catches them and delivers them in a nutrient-ready state will receive an Exit Zero T-shirt. And once done, you ask? Why, we will hollow out the bean and make an ark for our citizens for when the Deluge comes (according to my almanac, on October 31 at 4:15pm). I expect to see you all on that date, packed, smug and ready.

The Cape May Crossword
None of that generic nonsense you see in other papers... a puzzle just for “Exit Zero”! By Jon Roth So YOU love crosswords? Great. Sit down, get a cup (or glass) of your favorite beverage, relax and enjoy this puzzle. The answers to the crossword are all related to this week’s issue. Our theme this week: beans. The solution can be found on the front page of our website, www.exitzero.us. Across 2. This bean is a little hum-drum, a little beige, but it’d be tough to make cake or ice cream without it. 5 . Almost 600 of these beans must be processed to make just one pound of chocolate. 7 . This alternative rock band released songs like “Buddy Holly,” as well as the more apropos single “Pork and Beans” in 2008. 8 . These beans are white with mottled spots, much like the horse that bears the same descriptor. 9 . Beans (as well as beef) are crucial components in this Mexican staple. 10 . Without these beans, there wouldn’t be a best part of waking up. 13 . This bean is named after a pair of organs. 14 . These would do very well in the
Brevity – the soul of wit... 14 Down.
marathon – if only they had legs. 15 . This isn’t a very nice way to refer to an accountant. 16 . If you go to this city, don’t miss “The Bean,” a giant, curved reflective sculpture. 17 . Some people say these beans are snooty, but they’d be more polite if we took the time to learn their language. 19 . Activity Of The Week
H
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Halloween Happenings for Kids
alloween is a great time to be a kid. For the price of a costume and a cheerful, “Trick or Treat!” you receive candy, stickers, or other kid currency from neighbors. There are challenges, of course. You only get about a dozen Halloweens before people start to look at you funny when you come to the door. Halloween grinches, like parents who limit candy intake and teachers who give homework, try to steal the fun. This year, there’s even a pumpkin shortage. What’s a costumed kiddie to do? Get a head start on the celebration with a trip to Cape May! Looking to mark Halloween’s harvest connection? Check out Scarecrow Alley at the Emlen Physick Estate from October 10-31. Individuals, groups and businesses have decorated the Physick Estate with their “ghoulishly gruesome or foolishly funny” scarecrows. Tour the grounds and pick your favorite, then cast your vote at the Carriage House Gallery. Admission is free. Eager to get in the spooky spirit? Try a ghostly tour. The “Ghosts of Cape May” and
“Tales of Terror” trolley tours let you enjoy spirited, 30-minute rides through town, as your guide regales you with the spooky stories of Ghost Writer Craig McManus. Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for children. The Ghosts of the Lighthouse Tour ($20 adults, $15 children) focuses on the “Spirits at the Light,” and includes the option to climb
the lighthouse. Or try the Phantoms of the Physick Estate house tour. In the daytime, there’s a kid-friendly tour, $10 for adults and $5 for children. In the evening, the tour becomes terrifying, with special effects, scary characters and more. The evening tour is $15 for adults and $12 for children. Crazy for candy? The Washington Street Mall offers Trick or Treating for children from noon-2pm on Saturday, October 23. Kids wear their costumes and stroll the mall collecting treats donated by the merchants. (Mom and Dad may get a little shopping done at the same time.) At 1:30, the action moves to Rotary Park – look for the gazebo behind the mall – where judging begins for the Halloween Parade. The parade itself begins at 3pm. On October 31, Halloween itself, kids can trick or treat at the Physick Estate from 5-7 in the evening. Spooky characters will be doling out treats on the grounds of the estate. Enjoy the haunted happenings in Cape May this Halloween season. The kids will enjoy the extended celebration and the whole family will have a ghoulishly good time. Next week: Halloween Treats for Grown-Ups

here is so much happening at Cape May Stage in the coming weeks. Sturdy Savings Bank will be sponsoring a special ASL performance of The Woolgatherer on Friday, October 14 at 8pm. This funny and riveting play continues through October 22. People are talking about the play and returning to see it because there is so much to experience. Shawn Fisher designed the set for The Woolgatherer but this multi-talented man has also written a play with Cape May in mind. The idea came to him when he was designing Happy Days and was so impressed with Lynn Cohen’s performance in that work. He wrote How To Make A Rope Swing for Lynn Cohen, and she is leaving her film set to come to Cape May for a special brunch honoring special Cape May Stage volunteers on Sunday, October 16. The reading is the next night, October 17 at 8pm. The play takes place in a South Jersey town where they are replacing an old schoolhouse. Back in 1951, part of South Jersey was known as the “Mississippi of the North.” This play explores what happens when a long-suppressed moment from that period comes to light. Shawn Fisher is a part of our artistic family, and we are pleased to begin the process of mounting a possible production. On Monday, October 10, rehearsals for Red begin, a noteworthy event for several reasons. The most important theaters in our country are all doing productions of this show and Cape May Stage is honored to have gotten the rights so soon after the

Broadway production. The New York Times recently displayed the posters that different theaters are using. Wait until you see what Cape May Stage has planned. This is the story of Mark Rothko, the abstract expressionist artist who was commissioned to do a series of murals for the Four Seasons Restaurant. After doing the paintings, he returned the money and kept the paintings because he could not have his work hanging in a place where people were eating and ignoring the important work he created. Chris Dolman, who directed the Cape May Stage production of Doubt, will be directing. New York actor, R.J. Barnett will be playing Ken, Rothko’s assistant. playing Rothko. Roy Steinberg began his career as an actor and will make his Cape May Stage debut in this role. Roy has played the title roles in King Lear, Macbeth and Richard III. He appeared on Broadway in Wings by Arthur Kopit with Constance Cummings. He also played opposite Christopher Walken in Measure For Measure and opposite William Hurt in Lanford Wilson’s The Rhimers of Eldritch. Most recently, Cape May audiences got a quick glimpse of him onstage with Kate Hathaway in Blue Plate Special. He won the Best Actor Award at Yale School of Drama where he received his MFA in Acting. The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
o there I was at this motel. Don’t ask me why; don’t ask me where. Okay, I’ll tell you where. It was in a small, Eastern city surrounded by farmland going to development and woodlands on hilltops. Obviously not Cape May. It was Sunday morning. I’d just checked out. I was supposed to be met by a gentleman who was going to take me to a very famous hawk watch site. Not as famous as Cape May of course, but famous enough. Anyway, I had a half hour to kill, so I took a walk along a service road that connected the motel to, I soon discovered, nothing. The road ended after a few hundred yards. Not the point. The point is that as I was walking I couldn’t help noticing that there were a bunch of Blue Jays flying over. Some coming; some going. Blue Jay is a pretty common woodland and suburban species. I take about as much (and little) note of them as I do American Robin. But after seeing 20 or 30 of the things it
piqued my interest. That's a lot of Blue Jays for a small stretch of degraded habitat. It didn’t take long to figure out that the birds were heading to a patch of oaks that had survived the building of the motel. It didn’t take a degree in biology to come to the conclusion that the jays were heading for the oaks in order to get acorns and heading away with their bills filled.
Jays have a wonderful habit of stashing acorns (and other nuts) for the winter. It has been noted that most of the oaks on the planet have squirrels and jays to thank for their lives (or at least an assist). Not all the acorns that get stashed get consumed over the winter and some of those survivors grow up and become trees. Anyway, it wasn’t so much the stashing habit of jays that surprised me. It was the volume of birds. In about 15 minutes I counted over 100 Blue Jays heading in from all compass points. Following them with my binoculars they were coming in from miles away. Imagine that. Miles. The energetic cost must have been pretty high. The quality of these acorns must have rivaled those at The Barefoot Contessa at Hamptons Thanksgiving feast. I looked around for someone to show the pageant to but... nobody. I swung my binoculars around and noticed that there were probably a dozen housing developments under the path of the

Bird Droppings ? From Page 91 birds. I wondered, and not for the first time, how many of those homes had the Nature Channel on right at that very moment? A few at least. Maybe more. But the thing that struck me, and always strikes me when I am engaged by some natural spectacle, was how oblivious humans are to the world around them. I mean here was a natural event right up there with migrating Gray Whales off the coast of California and Monarch Butterflies in Cape May and the migrating hawks that I was going to go off to see that very morning. But nobody was paying any attention. Happens all the time. Great natural spectacles. In fact, it’s happening right now. As you read these words. If I were you, I’d look up. Oh. Right. Might want to step outside first. If you don’t know what you are looking at while you are looking up, consider going on a Cape May Bird Observatory bird walk. There are a few to choose from every week, and one every Monday morning at 7:30am with Pete Dunne that meets in the parking lot at The Nature Conservancy on Sunset Boulevard. Or head over to the Cape May
Forget the Nature Channel – try your back yard Hawk Watch at the Cape May Point State Park and look up at the hawks that are migrating. There are trained interpretive naturalists available every day to let you know what you are looking at. They even have some binoculars so you can really see what you’re looking at. Or you can stop by the Cape May Bird Observatory and ask any of the staff or volunteers what is happening throughout the week. They’ll be glad to help you and you’ll see why the Cape May Bird Observatory is THE place to come for all your nature needs – and not to be missed.

The CMBO, located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point (884-2736), is open every day from 9:30am to 4:30pm. While you're there, check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars, pick up a free map and schedule of daily walks and programs for the season, take a look at the sighting sheets to check what's being seen, scan the bookshelves or pick up a bargain from the used and vintage books section, look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise (including a terrific lithograph done just for the Cape May Bird Observatory), or just browse around. Sit outside on our garden benches and enjoy the birds at the feeders and the view of Lake Lily. If you can’t make it in person, visit us online at BirdCapeMay.org – where birding Cape May is only a click away! Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey's own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at the CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.

Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews "The Debt"
e’ve seen some of the themes and modalities used in the new film The Debt before, but not conceived in the same way. The film weaves between storylines set in past and present – similar to Sarah’s Key (2011) or The Secret in Their Eyes (2009). Certainly the theme of bringing Nazis to justice is nothing new. But somehow The Debt makes very good use of the subject and style, proving they are not too overused to be employed effectively. I said very good use — it wasn't quite great. The Debt follows the 40-year story of three Mossad secret agents sent to Berlin in the mid1960s to bring a Nazi war criminal (played masterfully by actor Jesper Christensen) to justice. The war criminal, now a gynecologist, is first approached by agent Rachel Singer undercover as a patient. The character is played in 1965 by Jessica Chastain (of The Help, Take Shelter, The Tree of Life... try to name a film she hasn’t been in this year) and in 1997 by Oscar winner Helen Mirren. The other two agents are played superbly by Tom Wilkinson and Ciarán Hinds in 1997 and Marton Csokas
Helen Mirren plays a former Mossad secret agent who once pursued a Nazi war criminal in The Debt. and Sam Worthington in 1965. The initial kidnapping of the doctor goes reasonably well but is ultimately botched. He must become a reluctant houseguest at the agents’ apartment until they are told what to do with him. The US doesn’t want to get involved, and the Israeli
government begins to ignore the young agents’ plight. There is a clear “a-ha” moment in The Debt that is truly remarkable and makes you sit up in your seat and marvel at the crafty writing and stylish storytelling. After that moment, the film sort of… goes on, and is not nearly as surefooted or remarkable. Still, that one brilliant moment is worth the price of admission, as is the fine writing throughout the film (for example, you'll never feel jolted or confused by the shifts between past and present). Also quite notable is the casting in this film. The actors’ features make it believable that these two sets of younger and older players could be the same characters. More importantly, the actors capture the spirit of their characters – despite 40 years difference. So The Debt is certainly worth the price, even if in the end you feel like the film hasn’t paid all of its debt to flawless storytelling. A brief word in remembrance of the Beach Theatre: a landmark on the Cape May map, the Beach Theatre had been home to our festival for many years — and we mourn its demise with film lovers all over Cape May.

Stella Dixon's take on romance on Old Cape Island
hen Bob needed a lastminute date to his boss’ holiday party, I threw on a pair of heels and hopped a bus in the middle of a blizzard. It took three hours to get there, and I spent a large portion of the trip avoiding the drool of the man sleeping next to me. But I couldn’t let Bob down. Friends since childhood, we’ve seen each other through too many break-ups to count. We’ve traveled cross-country together. We’ve broken the law together. Bob has been my jogging partner, drinking partner, and the closest thing to a life partner I’ve ever had. He’s seen me devastated, ecstatic and accidentally naked. When my grandmother died, I cried on his shoulder until sunrise. He knows my favorite thing in the world is a milkshake from the diner at 2am. I know how many chili dogs Bob can handle from HotDog Tommy’s, and how many times he’s been in love. Whenever someone suggests that men and women can’t be friends without sexual tension getting in the way, I always point to Bob. Of course it’s possible. Just look at the two of us. We’re
great friends. Just friends, except that the only reason Bob and I have never slept together is timing. When I wanted to be with him, Bob was dating someone else. When he wanted to be with me, I didn’t want to be involved with anyone. Just great friends? Not quite. The truth is, I just hate admitting that men and women can’t be friends. In theory, a friendship with a member of the opposite sex shouldn’t be difficult, so I have trouble acknowledging that I haven’t been able to

make it work. But every time I think I’ve got myself a male pal, one of us starts wanting something more. It doesn’t matter whether the “something more” is a full-blown romance or a one-night stand. The point is, at least one party always falls in love, starts feeling just a little smitten or, at the very least, gets horny. Bob and I are both grateful that nothing romantic has ever happened between us. It never would have worked; we’re too much like siblings. He’s dating someone now, and I’m still excited about Tim. But it doesn’t change the fact that the thought has crossed our minds. I don’t know why this happens. Is it biological, and we’re all just wired for sex? Or maybe it’s psychological – we want what we can’t have, and a friend can't be a lover, at least without risking the friendship. Or maybe it’s something else altogether. Perhaps the line between love and friendship is so thin, we simply forget it’s there. It becomes difficult to separate the two. At the best of times, both can make us feel proud and secure, and at the worst, foolish and betrayed. All of the time, finding someone who can touch us so deeply makes us lucky as hell.

What does the phrase “time is of the essence” mean? "Time is of the essence" is a phrase used to emphasize that the actions described need to be completed in a reasonable amount of time. In all matters involving real estate, you need to be as specific as possible. You need to ask your lawyer or real estate agent how much time certain acts will require. Use these time windows where appropriate and include the phrase "time is of the essence" so the time windows are enforceable.
