The EZ Guide To What’s Going On The who, what, when and where of Cape May’s social scene
Friday, October 21 Cape May Film Festival Stop by the historic Chalfonte Hotel and spend a weekend enjoying some Jersey-fresh cinema (and okay, some movies from other places, too.) There will be panel discussions, a celebrity appearance by Vincent Pastore of The Sopranos, short films, documentaries and plenty more. Tickets range from $10 for a single film to $50 for a full weekend pass. For details, visit njstatefilmfestival.com, and be sure to check the program printed in the back of our paper!
Saturday, October 22 Chef Tony Clark’s Cooking School At The Old Grange Every Saturday in October and November, Chef Tony will take interested students on a culinary tour of a different region - this week is all about Spain. Watch the chef prepare some hallmark dishes, then enjoy them during a gourmet lunch following the class. The cost is $25, class begins at 12:30pm, and reservations are strongly suggested. Call Historic Cold Spring Village at (609) 884-0114 for details and reservations.
Historic Haunts Combo Tour Start off with a Ghosts of Cape May Trolley Tour, where your guide will narrate several spine-tingling tales as you ride through the Historic District. Then make a visit to the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate, where you will visit a home séance room of the 1890s and learn of the Victorians’ fascination with spiritualism. This combination tour costs $20 for adults, $15 for children. Purchase tickets at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth. For details, call MAC at (609) 884-5404.
Artist’s Reception At SOMA NewArt Gallery It’s rare to find such a diverse showing of artists here in Cape May, but SOMA has gathered four talented individuals skilled in various media. See the work of Bruce and Robin Hippel, Samuel Donovan and Richard Samuelson at this gallery opening and reception in Carpenter’s Square Mall. Admission is free, runs from 5-8pm. For details, call SOMA at (609) 898-7488. Sunday, October 23 Benefit For Patty Behrens Patty Behrens has been battling Crohn’s Dis-
ease for 12 years, and because of a flare-up this summer she’s been out of work for a month and faces a possible surgery some time soon. Help alleviate the stress in her life while enjoying food, beer and wine, door prizes and a 50/50 raffle. Come support a local in her time of need. Held at the West Cape May Fire Hall from 2pm to 6pm. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door. For details, call (609) 408-4353. Wednesday, October 26 Half-Price Preview Of Red At Cape May Stage Avail yourself of the opportunity to preview what is sure to be the hottest ticket in town. Head to the beautiful Robert Shackleton Playhouse as Cape May Stage premieres Red, which follows the experience of expressionist Mark Rothko as he produces a series of commissioned pieces for the famous Four Seasons in New York City. Acted by none other than Roy Steinberg, Artistic Director of the company, it’s sure to be a treat. Show starts at 8pm. Preview tickets are $17.50. For details and reservations, call Cape May Stage at (609) 884-1341.

The Police Blotter
CHEEKTOWAGA, New York - Police were summoned to the ramp at the Walden Galleria shopping mall. There they reported that they found an amorous couple in a parked car, further stating that the couple was “heavily engaged and making progress.”
Classic Quotations
A Story From The Past “James Bond is quite serious about his drinks and clothing and cigarettes and food and all that sort of thing. There is nothing wry or amused about James Bond.” Ken Follett “Smile for the birdie, you bastard.” James Bond “It’s very easy to confuse Sean Connery with James Bond. Sometimes in the entertainment industry, people believe the cake is more real than the baker.” Judd Nelson “James Bond has a license to kill, rock stars have a license to be outrageous.” Gene Simmons “I have always hated that damn James Bond. I’d like to kill him.” Sean Connery “Do I look like I give a damn?” James Bond
a SIGNIFICANT change for Cape May was the bed and breakfast business started by Tom and Sue Carroll after they purchased an ornate old home at 24 Jackson Street that had been separated into apartments and run as a boarding house. Throwing caution to the wind, they removed the apartments and began renting rooms, adding the amenity of breakfast. They named the inn ‘The Mainstay’ and kept the name after moving to a bigger building on Columbia Avenue in 1977. Ben Miller
Facebook Mystery Contest
Weird Word Of The Week
Cryptanalysis – From the Greek word kryptós, “hidden,” and analýein, “to loosen,” cryptanalysis is the study of methods for obtaining the meaning of encrypted information, without having access to the secret information normally required to do so. This is also known as the practice of “codebreaking” or “cracking the code.”

KNOW your way around Cape May? Think of yourself as the observant type? Feast your eyes on the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Kate Chadwick. If you think you know what establishment you’re staring at, then you have a chance to win a gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter – follow the instructions carefully. And, don’t worry if you have never used Facebook before – it’s easy! Just ask your six-year-old nephew for help. To enter, look for the mystery photo at facebook.com/ exitzeropublishing. Good luck!
Random Fact Of The Week
the first American Bond girl, Jill St John, didn’t come along until 1971, and there have been more American actresses cast than from any other country, a total of seven. There have been four English, three French, two Swedish, and one each from Switzerland, Italy, Japan, Poland and Malaysia.
Fortune Cookie Of The Week J “You will have a pleasant trip.” J Once a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with wonton soup. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editors
F
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
all is here for real if we’re talking about Halloween, and we’re talking about Halloween, folks. It’s right around the corner, so whether you are a big kid headed over to Congress Hall for their annual Phantom Ball, or a little kid extorting candy from obliging residents and mall merchants, it’s time to get that costume ready to roll. The Phantom Ball will take place on Friday, October 28, from 8 to 11pm, and it’s always a great time. This year’s theme is “Weird Science,” but feel free to come dressed as whatever you like, and make sure to bring your appetite. For the under five-foot set, trick-or-treating on the mall will take place on Sunday October 23 from noon to 2pm. Following that will be the Halloween parade, kicking off at Rotary Park at 3pm, and directly following THIS will be the Halloween Party at the Emlen Physick Estate. Plenty of Halloween activities to keep any goblin occupied. But if you prefer to dress as yourself this Halloween (sometimes, that’s the spookiest thing of all), you don’t have to get decked out for a party or parade. One of our writers was recently out for dinner, and she noticed the crowd choosing to huddle inside, around the bar and fireplace. But in our opinion, this time of year, it’s outside of a Cape May restaurant that is the loveliest spot. Instead of dressing up this year, dress down in your comfiest sweater before heading to the porches of Peter Shields or The Ebbitt Room, or to the veranda of Congress Hall. With a warming hot toddy or pumpkin-flavored dessert, watch the ghouls and goblins as they pass you by. Even the horse-drawn carriages of the Cape May Carriage Company
are dressed for the season with festive fall flowers and Halloween decorations. Get cozy under a blanket with your favorite zombie. Being outside during this time of year really is underrated. In Cape May, we spend so much time surrounded by nature, we sometimes forget to take advantage of it, especially when the weather gets a little chilly. This October, make it a point to get bundled up and hop on the ferry, for no other reason than a front-row seat to a spectacular sunset. You might also try booking a tour on The Cape May Whale Watcher, which is running tours through December, or grab a board and head for the water. The surfers in town know this is the best time of year to hang ten, as hurricane season is well underway. After you’ve had your fill of the outdoors, heat back up with a night of dancing…and $5 mojitos. We got an insider tip that Latin Night at Sea Salt is quickly becoming the place to be on Wednesday nights. And with live music by Cintron – a band of Caribbean rhythms, jazz, and bilingual salsa – how could it not be? If you’re looking for a reason to stash your scarf and give your clunky winter boots the boot,
this is it. Fall in Cape May also means Film Festival. Flip this issue over for a handydandy 20-page guide to this tremendous event. Since 2001, the Cape May Film Society has been bringing the finest New Jersey filmmakers and their most groundbreaking works to Cape Island, all while providing film education for at-risk adolescents. Attendees of the event will not only have the opportunity to screen shorts and features, but to meet with producers, directors, and composers. Need another reason why Cape May’s off-season is still very in? Check out the final show of the East Lynne Theater Company’s season, Dulcy, playing this weekend. It’s a comedy so funny, it’s been described as “screwball,” but it’s being performed by eleven actors who are anything but. We’d like to congratulate the masterminds behind this award-winning Equity professional theater on another successful season, and for doing their part in keeping the arts alive and well on Cape Island. Speaking of doing their part for the arts, check out our preview of the SOMA NewArt Gallery’s new exhibit. The Opening Night Artists’ Reception, to be held on Saturday, October 22, will be the final one of the 2011 season, and will feature four artists and their works. Read all about it on page 35. On another note, thank you for all the positive feedback on the Andy Boyt tribute we did in last week’s issue. In case you haven’t already seen our post on Facebook, we will be selling 11x17 copies of the stunning centerfold paddle-out photo taken by Aleksey Moryakov. The cost of the print is $30, and we will be donating all of the proceeds to the American Heart Association. Open Daily Happy Hour 4 to 6pm everyday

Every week our photographer Danielle O’Neal roams the streets of Cape May on a mission... to give away a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. But it’s not quite THAT easy – first, the lucky recipient has to answer three questions related to our issue theme, which this week is all about James Bond. This week’s winner is Bonnie Canova, 61, a unit secretary at Cape Regional Medical Center from Cape May. We found Bonnie strolling the Washington Street Mall. Here are her answers to our piercing questions: Who played the original James Bond? Sean Connery What three digit number is James Bond also known as? 007 Who played the second James Bond? I have no idea. Bonnie wins a $50 gift certificate to The Mad Batter for answering our questions. Congratulations and enjoy! PHOTOGRAPH BY Danielle o’neal

Masters of Many Media Gather At SOMA
I
SOMA NewArt Gallery hosts four artists working in glass, ceramic, watercolor and digital media
T IS not so rare a thing in Cape May to have a gallery opening featuring a few artists. SOMA NewArt Gallery is raising the bar this Saturday, October 22 and featuring four artists working in a wide range of media. It’s a rare thing to have so much local talent in a single room, and art lovers (and regular people who like attractive things) should make sure they head out to the Artist’s Reception, where they’ll have a chance to meet the men and woman behind the exhibits. Bruce and Robin Hippel, longtime Cape May residents, will have their pieces on display in Gallery Three. Bruce has been working in stained glass for more than 30 years, and has been commissioned to produce work for several churches and public buildings. Robin Hippel works in pottery and ceramics. “Working on the potter’s wheel became what I like to call my ‘orbital bliss,’” says Robin. One piece on display that showcases this passion is Robin’s ceramic tribute to the World Trade Center. Gallery Two features the work of Sam Donovan, a watercolorist who originally
“She Belongs to Me,” an oil on canvas by artist, Sam Donovan learned his craft from the men who painted signs and billboards in the Mid-Atlantic region. A painter for more than 35 years, Donovan moved from rendering advertisements to producing large-scale murals. He eventually turned his attention toward watercolor painting, and the work on display in Gallery Two focuses on his loves: the outdoors, dairy farms, and the rural landscapes and seascapes he grew up with. If digital and mixed media are more to your liking, stop by Gallery One to see
Richard Samuelson’s pieces. On exhibit will be reinterpretations of works by modern masters like Pablo Picasso and Edward Hopper, as well as subjects as diverse as Baroque churches, sculptures gardens and scenes of war. Each piece is digitally manipulated, a technique that Richard was wary of initially, but soon grew to love. “I found that traditional and digital techniques can come together into what seems to me to be a deep and true creative partnership,” he says. “I’m excited about the new possibilities it has opened up for me.” The exhibit will be especially poignant for the Cape May lover, as much of this artist’s inspiration comes from the Cape May Canal, on which he owns a studio. Whether you have an interest in ceramics, computer-generated imagery, or simply musing over beautiful things, there will be something to satisfy at this opening night. You are invited to stop by anytime between 5 and 8pm on October 22, when you’ll have an opportunity to chat with the artists over light food and drink. Otherwise, the exhibit will be on display until November 28.
Thanks for a Great Season!

Arts Editor Tom Sims reviews Cape May Stage’s “The Woolgatherer”
outh Philadelphia: if you haven’t been there, you’re missing out. Maybe it didn’t make the list of 100 places to visit before you die, but it should be on a bucket list or two. There’s no need to spend days there – just a day will do. Or better still, go see Cape May Stage’s new production, The Woolgatherer. Why? Because it’s got South Philly written all over it. “This play is a combination of being poetic, yet it resonates because of a character identifiable to this community,” says Roy Steinberg, Artistic Director for Cape May Stage. “Cliff is a regular guy from Jersey, and he has roots in South Philly so many of our visitors and locals know people similar to him.” Steinberg points out that the language Cliff (played by Michael Basile) uses is colloquial yet poetic. For example, when referring to a trip to the Pacific, Cliff refers to the cities on a mountain as beads of a necklace, bits of light. The playwright, Emmy-winner William Mastrosimone, revised The Woolgatherer (originally produced in 1979) specifically
Michael Basile and Pilar Millhollen star as two loaners who come together for an afternoon for Cape May Stage. “Mastrosimone came to me last year after our world premiere production of Class with an interest in reviving this play. He wanted to rewrite the play not because it was bad but because his whole poetic sensibility had matured in the 30-plus years since its first opening. Having Mastrosimone involved in the production of the play has been extremely helpful.” Steinberg says Mastrosimone’s input has helped to create exceptional and very
innovative blocking based on the words and actions. Having actors who are so nimble, especially Pilar Millhollen, who is a dancer and plays Rose, is an important part of this production. Having read the original script, Michael Basile, who plays Cliff, says that this production is “more streamlined, the second act is shorter and more direct.” He says this makes the part more difficult because “there’s not as much stuff leading up to the emotional moments – we have to flip the switch pretty quickly. But I can empathize with this character because, like him, I have a blue-collar job myself – so it’s not too much of a departure.” Basile says he never realizing how funny The Woolgatherer was. “I knew there were funny moments,” he says, “but I didn’t have any idea of how much audience would laugh. They fall in love with the characters in the first act and they want to see what happens between them in the second.” The Woolgatherer plays Wednesdays through Sundays at 8pm through October 22. The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone
he other day, I had a strange experience. I was walking along Cape May’s beach when this chubby little toddler came waddling toward me, totally naked. In one hand, he carried a yellow shovel, and in the other, his little bathing suit. He had the kind of toothless grin and chunky thighs that can only be so cute on someone under two feet tall. This in itself, of course, was not the strange thing; plenty of babies run around the beach being adorable. The strange thing was that, for the first time in my adult life, I felt myself longing for a waddling little toddler of my own. I pictured what life would be like with the addition of a baby, and I didn’t feel any panic, only desire. Normally, when I come across such a wee one, I have the same response I have after seeing a 19th century French armoire in the antique shop; I can appreciate the beauty of it, but I just can’t see it fitting into my own personal space. For a while, I figured that my biological clock was broken; I’d always wanted to want a child, but I never actually did. Now,
for the first time, I felt myself coming down with baby fever. I’m still feeling just a little shocked by my response to this kid, because it really doesn’t make sense that I would even want a baby. Logistically, I’m in no position to support one, but even more importantly, I’ve seen first-hand what a great deal of work raising a kid can be. Then again, from what I can tell, having a baby is not much different than dealing with an unruly Cape May customer. Certain guests of the restaurant where I work, like babies, simply don’t care how busy you are. All they know is that they are hungry, and when they get hungry, they get
cranky. They’re unreasonable and impatient. If something is wrong with their food – if it’s too hot or too difficult to chew – they can’t articulate what’s wrong. Instead, they’ll fling their arms up in the air and throw a tantrum. You consider letting them cry it out, but you’re in public, and you don’t want other people looking at you like the bad parent who has lost total control of the situation. Then, after they’ve had too much to drink and they can’t support their own heads, they burp, and proceed to communicate only in baby-talk. Inevitably, they make a mess of whatever it is they’ve been eating, and you are the one left cleaning it up. At the end of the day, you’re left exhausted and wishing you were the one who gets a nap. But at least there is some measure of comfort in this. If I ever find myself longing for a baby of my own again, all I have to do is head to work, where I can coddle at least ten of them per shift. I’ve learned that even though these big babies are nearly as demanding as the real thing, learning to pacify them can be pretty rewarding.

The Answer Lady
T
Wise answers to perplexing questions
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I recently joined a sports league, and realize now that I am SERIOUSLY out of shape. My entire body hurts. Should I accept this as part of the aging process, or trade in my Wii Fitness for a gym membership? Decrepit Codger Dear Decrepit Oh, dear – what sort of sports league is this – golf? Or more like one of those kill-theguy-with-the-ball tackle football matches? Never mind – the Answer Lady digresses, plus golf is not a sport anyway. Certainly as we get older we need to be mindful of the fact that our bodies cannot take abuse the way they once could. For instance, there was a time when the Answer Lady could do a walking tour of every bar in this entire town (okay, it started out as walking, but ended up as staggering); however those days are gone.
This does not mean that we (and by ‘we,’ the Answer Lady means ‘you’) should not find a gym or an activity that will serve the dual purposes of keeping us in shape while corresponding to our activity/ability levels. Whether it’s the punishing – er, that is, challenging - Boot Camp at North Beach Gym, or something a bit less demanding, such as a brisk walk on the promenade each day, we should keep in mind the credo that a body at rest tends to stay at rest, while a body in motion tends to stay in motion.
Dear Answer Lady I recently had a few dates with a really promising guy, but today he said something that totally shocked me. We were chatting about his folks, and I wondered aloud when I’d meet them, to which he responded “By the way, my mom is a total bitch.” I have to admit my first impulse was to slap him – I was horrified! What kind of guy talks about his mom like that? – Slap Him Silly Dear Silly Perhaps he’s the kind of guy with a total bitch for a mom. The Answer Lady once had this exact experience, and was properly outraged when her boyfriend-at-the-time referred to his own mother in the same way. Then the Answer Lady actually met her, and had to spend the ENTIRE next day apologizing to her boyfriend. Profusely. The woman was heinous, and that’s a fact. It sounds as if you and the Answer Lady had similarly wonderful moms, and the Answer Lady is also blessed with an equally wonderful motherin-law. However, such is not always the case. Sad but true. Reserve judgment until you meet her. And good luck with that.

Chance Meetings

W
here to meet new people? I’m still a pagan, so church is out. Don’t have time for community college. And grocery shopping? Come on, the only women I ever see there are wearing sweatpants, pushing the fire engine cart with three bawling tots hanging off it, plucking sugary cereal and frozen dinners from the shelves. There’s always online dating, but that’s failed miserably for me. It might work if you live in a city, but here in Cape May, when you tell the computer that you’re looking for someone within a 25 mile radius, it matches you up with singles in Delaware. And maybe it’s my imagination, but it seems to me that I recognize the same ten women on a half dozen different dating. Which is why I’m playing dodgeball with the South Jersey Sports League. You know, kiddy sports for grownups. I missed summer kickball season, but I’m all over dodgeball. The problem is, mine is the only team with no women on it. All the girls are
on the other teams, which puts them on the opposite side of the gym, and doesn’t that just take me right back to 7th grade. Because my team is a sausagefest, our guys have to sit a player out while we take on the girls. This creates two separate problems. One, I’m simply not in the kind of shape where I can play continuously against guys and then against girls for an hour. Second, playing against girls is a lose/lose proposition. If we play our hardest, then the

girls get upset. (One was accidentally hit in the head and went crying to the sidelines, griping that the guys should have to throw it softer, and that she’d have to cover the bruise with make-up.) If we sandbag, the girls beat us. (And they did. Several times. Some of those dodgeball chicks are downright vicious.) I got pegged in the eye by one of the girls - somewhere on the gym floor there’s a contact lens - and there’s not a damn thing I could do about it except man up and get back in the game. Had not my brains been rattling around my skull, I might’ve used it as an opening to meet the girl who did the damage, but a possible concussion isn’t really a great opener. There has to be an easier way to meet someone than by having her throw things at my skull. Let’s meet for dinner. Send an e-mail to info@exitzero.us, and we’ll go to dinner at one of the Cape’s fine eating establishments. Afterwards I’ll write all about it, a combined date and restaurant review. (Your name will be changed, the restaurant’s won’t.) I’m all sports, no games.

Since transferring to LCMR last year, Dylan Clark has fallen in love with his new school. He even had the opportunity to share his enthusiasm for it with Governor Christie last year when the politician visited Cape May County. Clark emphasized that LCMR should be recognized for its excellent faculty and staff. “I love everything about this place. From the teachers to the students, it’s just a great school,” said Clark. Clark, the son of Elizabeth and Crandall of Cape May, is quite active in school activities. He enjoys chess, and took it upon himself to start a chess club, even teaching fellow students the game. One of his peers actually came close to beating him, but Clark is not worried. “I have some tricks up my sleeve,” said Clark of his chess playing skills. His interests don’t stop there; he also enjoys baseball, fencing, and playing the piano. Academically, he is intrigued by biology and politics. He is considering becoming a veterinarian or a politician after college. Dylan Clark is proving himself a strong and intelligent student and is working his way towards becoming a LCMR legend. story by Colie Brooks, Photo by Jason Hoban

The Cape May Crossword
None of that generic nonsense you see in other papers... a puzzle just for “Exit Zero”! By Jon Roth So YOU love crosswords? Great. Sit down, get a cup (or glass) of your favorite beverage, relax and enjoy this puzzle. The answers to the crossword are all related to this week’s issue. Our theme this week: James Bond. The Old Fogey
A
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
h, the stories I could tell you about my days as a Secret Agent, dear friends. Except I am expressly forbidden from doing so, having signed a score of official secrets act, often in blood (occasionally even my own). To do so would be rash, boastful, vainglorious and make me a sound a total blowhard… oh, go on then, if you must insist. I was the first “Double 0” agent, officially designated “000” but all the ladies, when I was introduced by business card, misunderstood and assumed I was called “ooooh!” as in a girlish expression of surprise. So I became “001”, and was outfitted with a rash of top secret paraphernalia. Of course it was nothing like the nonsense that scoundrel Fleming invented in his books (more of him downpage): my car was an Aston Martin, by chance, but instead of fancy bulletproof shields, ejector seats and machine guns, all that made it out of the ordinary was a case of hand grenades in the trunk. Whenever I was followed by some bad lads, I merely pulled over, walked to the
back of the car and started to lob them at the pursuers until they were deterred. Of course, I was one for the quips, but I confess they were not those clever puns as displayed by Mr Sean Connery, possibly the greatest actor of our times (and the only Scotsman I could abide): mine were more matter-of-fact and expressed the adrenaline of the moment. After killing a wouldbe assassin by throwing him in a bath and tipping an electrical device in after, I said “You’re dead!”, for example. It was not until
many hours later I amended my diary to record my parting line as “shocking!” Of course, it was all blown rather public after Fleming came to town for a Malt evening with myself and Ernie Hemingway. I knew he was writing a book, but the rogue told me it was about birdwatching in Cape May, and so when in Martini Beach we were set upon by a group of ninja assassins from Wildwood, I did not think twice about dispatching them by some clever means: one went down to my silenced pistol, a second to a thrown dagger, one with a blow to the throat from a rolled-up copy of Exit Zero and so on … in total, 32 were dispatched by my hand, and a dozen to Ernie’s elephant gun. Who knew that Fleming, who had hidden under a chair the whole time, was taking notes, and would go on to base an entire career on me? I must say, he should have kept my name intact, rather than a silly Englishified James Bond: can you imagine Connery uttering: “D’Catur’sh the name … Jackshun D’Catur…”? There would not have been a dry seat in the houshe.

Activity Of The Week
A
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Bocce on the Beach
utumn has come to Cape May, effectively closing the ocean. Sure, a few expert swimmers and wet-suited surfers still get wet, but for the rest of us, the beach becomes a big park with a great view. On crisp fall days, it’s a great place to jog, fly a kite, or just breathe. And, should you get tired of gazing at the ocean, searching for one last dolphin, why not play a little bocce on the beach? Bocce is a grown-up game, best played as a precursor to an afternoon glass of chianti. Considered by early Romans to be the sport of statesmen, bocce was once played with coconuts shells, imported from Africa for the purpose. The word “bocce” probably comes from the Latin for “boss.” The name sounds sophisticated, and is close enough to the Italian word for “kiss” to make it even more charming. It is an easy game to learn and a hard one to master, making it an outdoor alternative to indoor diversions like pool or darts, that occupy you in the dead of winter. The basic rules of bocce are simple - two players, or teams, throw balls at a target - a
smaller ball called the boccino. The traditional court is about 90 feet long and thirteen feet wide and is constructed of crushed stone. (Sand is close enough.) One team throws the boccino to a point about 9 feet from the far end of the court. Teams then take turns trying to throw - underhand - their four bocce balls closest to the boccino. Only the team that is
closest can score in any round, and games are usually played to 13. Bocce enthusiasts - and there are more than 20 million of them - assert that there are as many versions of bocce in America as there are Italians who brought the game here with them. Early Americans, like George Washington, played on grass courts, and different rule books offer different court sizes. Bocce balls, once carved of olive wood, are now made of metal or plastic - plastic is better for the beach. As long as you and your playmates agree on the rules, who cares about the details? Focus on the therapeutic aspects of the game - Galileo played to relax, after all, and maybe there’s something to the game’s old reputation for curing rheumatism. It is so addictive it should be illegal - bocce has been periodically outlawed by kingdoms across Europe for distracting soldiers from their military drills, and was once condemned by the Roman Catholic Church for encouraging gambling. Try a little bocce on the beach. Hey, it worked for Galileo. Next week: Sherlock Holmes at the Shore

MYA was recently surrendered to the shelter after her owner lost her home. Even though her life has been turned upside down, Mya has remained pretty happy. She’s a good girl who is housebroken, knows some basic commands, and loves to go for rides in the car. She does well with other dogs, and children over the age of ten; she has so much energy, she might accidentally knock over younger kids! The adoption fee is $95.
«
COOKIE is a sweet 1 1/2 year old gal. She is a little timid at first but after warming up, she is a playful and obedient doggie. She’s going to need a bit more training, and will need someone with patience and a firm hand to guide her, but she’ll pay you back with lots of love. If you are the kind soul who can offer her a new home, stop by and meet Cookie today. The adoption fee: is $95.

BRADY has had a tough life. For starters, he only has three legs, though he gets by great; he walks and runs just fine. He was dropped off at the shelter with his brother, Brody, who was adopted, but this guy is still all alone here. When he meets new people he tends to be shy, but once he warms up to you he is just fine. He does well with cats, dogs, and kids. All he wants is to be loved. The aoption fee is $95.

MMEDIATELY after The Woolgatherer closes on Saturday, October 22, the show’s set will be trucked to a warehouse in Wildwood, and the set for John Logan’s award-winning play, RED, will be erected. Last season, RED won the TONY Award for Best Play, and Alfred Molina won the Tony Award for Best Actor. Theatres across the country are lining up to do their versions of this magnificent play. November offers special ways to save on what is sure to be the high point of the season. Half-price preview night takes place on Wednesday, October 26 at 8pm. The official opening night is Thursday, October 27. Immediately following the performace will be an after party at Hemingway’s, located at the Grand Hotel on Beach Avenue. The entire audience is invited to celebrate with great food and stimulating conversation. RED’s Director, Chris Dolman, who directed Doubt in years past, will be in attendance. Other party-goers include Artistic Director Roy Steinberg whos is making his Cape May Stage acting debut playing Rothko, an abstract expressionist painter. He’ll star alongside R.J. Barnett, the New York actor playing Ken. Engage them both in conversation over a glass of wine. Scheduled for Friday, November 4 at 8pm is a sign-interpreted performance, sponsored by Sturdy Savings Bank. On November 5 at 3pm, it’s a ‘Pay What You Can’ matinee, in which patrons are invited to pay anything they wish, also do to the generosity of our local bank. Finally, seniors 62+ might enjoy

Mark refused to allow his beloved pictures to hang in a place where people would ignore them over food and chatter. It is the story of one art movement taking over another. It is the story of how an artist endures. It is the story of mentors and students, fathers and sons, art and commerce. Bird Droppings
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
S
ome people hate the Cape May Bird Observatory. I can see that. They hate it because it absolutely ruined October for locals. About 30... even 20 years ago, nobody but nobody came to Cape May in October. We locals had it to ourselves. Heck, even September was dead. Oh, sure, you encountered the odd birder or two but every traffic light in town could be set on blinker after Labor Day. Dogs slept on side streets. Not anymore. October has become the absolute peak of the birding season, and more than half the people you meet in Cape May are talking about “fallouts” and “hawk watch” and sporting CMBO T-shirts. It’s not entirely the observatory’s fault. You see, back when the CMBO got started, bird watchers were hardly more numerous than saints. It was a nice, quaint hobby that didn’t get much attention and didn’t draw many proponents. Then, WHAM, the popularity explod-
ed. Birders increased like fruit f lies. And somebody, somebody, started promoting Cape May as the place to go in October. There was good reason for this. With the population of warblers falling, the great big migratory fallouts everybody wanted to see when they came to Cape May happened later, when the middledistance migrants took over the skies.

Sparrows, robins, finches, kinglets, blackbirds, blue jays... Lots of species. Lots of numbers. Lots more chances of seeing a great, big, fat migratory deluge. The kind of spectacle birders who come to Cape May dream of seeing. The kind of deluge that gives them bragging rights when they get home and tell all the members of the local bird club how absolutely amazing Cape May is. And how they have to see it, too. So you see, it wasn’t just the Bird Observatory’s fault that you couldn’t find a parking space last weekend. It’s all that word of mouth. And all the birds, of course. A few years ago the Bird Observatory got an idea. They thought that the way to ease congestion was to spread out the birding season even more. They decided that it was time to tell birders that the first half of November can be just as good as October when it comes to big fallouts.

Bird Droppings ? From Page 85 And that the end of November and early December is the best time to find rare vagrants and even to catch some great late-season hawk f lights. Well, thank heavens they came to their senses. Rather than promote late autumn, the folks at the CMBO decided to suppress information relating to November birds. They’ve started a disinformation campaign. The “All Birds Gone By November” campaign. So if anyone asks you this November, where the birds are, your answer is: “All gone.” If word ever gets out that the migration doesn’t end on October 31, there’s no telling when birders might leave. They might be here till Christmas... maybe even Valentine's Day (when the tourist season begins anew). Imagine. Motels wouldn’t be able to close. Restaurants would have to keep staff on. The tourist season would go on and on.... And then the town would leave the parking meters and the traffic lights on. Clearly we can’t let that happen. Remember: “All gone.” Let’s all work
together to keep November safe for local birders... I mean, residents. In the meantime, when visitors (who might just happen to be novice or nonbird-watchers yet) want to know what’s going on with all the people around, point them in our direction. Or suggest they (or you) go on a Cape May Bird Observatory bird walk - there’s a few to choose from every week - and one every Monday morning at 7:30am with Pete Dunne that meets in the parking lot at The Nature Conservancy on Sunset Boulevard. As a convenient alternative, head over to the Cape May Hawk Watch at the Cape May Point State Park where you can sit down and relish in the hawk f light while you enjoy the company of other birders. There are trained interpretive naturalists available every day to let you know what you are looking at. They even have some binoculars so you can really see what you’re looking at. Or stop by the Cape May Bird Observatory and ask any of the staff or volunteers what is happening throughout the week. They’ll be glad to help you and you’ll see why the Cape May Bird Observatory is THE place to come for all your nature needs – and not to be missed. The CMBO, located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape

May Point (884-2736), is open every day from 9:30am to 4:30pm. While you're there, check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars, pick up a free map and schedule of daily walks and programs for the season, take a look at the sighting sheets to check what's being seen, scan the bookshelves or pick up a bargain from the used and vintage books section, look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise (including a terrific lithograph done just for the Cape May Bird Observatory), or just browse around. Sit outside on our garden benches and enjoy the birds at the feeders and the view of Lake Lily. If you can’t make it in person, visit us online at BirdCapeMay.org – where birding Cape May is only a click away! Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey's own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Off icer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at the CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.

The Movie Column
Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival, introduces a few movies filmed right here in Cape May
W
e know there have been movies made in Cape May, like maybe the 1981 horror thriller, The Prowler. But how many films have been shot in Cape May starring your favorite locals? This year, the Cape May Film Festival is hosting the talent of some of its favorite actors and actresses. The movies include a documentary that doesn’t take itself too seriously, four tourism spots that showcase the seasons, and a host of films featuring the artisans of Cape May. This Saturday, the festival of locals begins with Duckumentary. Mariah is a vignette artist with a strange fascination with an even stranger subject matter — but don’t tell her assistant, Vickie! Later that afternoon, we will screen short videos on the work of local artists in Cape May. Go “inside the artist’s studio” with local favorites Stan Sperlak and Victor Grasso. There are a few surprise artisans thrown in: is there an art to breadmaking? What about “the Salty Knitters?” At Sunday brunch, we will premiere four new Cape May tourism spots featuring
The festival includes four promotional tourism spots acted and filmed by Cape May locals local talent that you rarely get to see on the big screen. Thomas A. Raniszewski leads a local all-star cast with Alicia Grasso, Vickie Tryon, Susan Tischler and Terri Swain, and Glenn McBrearty is in four spots entitled, “Meet Larry Local.” The City of Cape May commissioned these commercials from the Cape May Film Society, and the four spots highlight the benefit of visiting Cape May
in a given season. They’re called “quirky,” sometimes “edgy”— well, what do you expect when they are supposed to capture all that is Cape May? On Sunday, we’ll also feature two of Cape May’s most entertaining film buffs, Dottie and Mal Knapp. They'll present their favorite mob movies in keeping with the theme for Friday night, featuring best-selling journalist George Anastasia and Sopranos star Vincent Pastore. The Cape May Film Festival takes place October 21-23 at the Chalfonte Hotel. Weekend passes start at $35, and you can learn more about the program by visiting capemayfilm.org. If you’re really pressed for time, just flip over this edition of Exit Zero and (as they say in the mob movies) “bada-bing!” You can see the complete festival program, complete with pictures! Come support the Cape May Film Festival this year! When you buy a weekend pass or give a contribution, your gift is doubled through the generosity of our volunteer leaders by way of a matching grant. The Dating Column
I
Stella Dixon's take on romance on Old Cape Island
have one of those mothers who is always right. It’s annoying. I’ve learned the hard way to listen to her. Had I paid attention to her in the past, I never would have put my new pants in the dryer, I wouldn’t have plugged the television into an electrical socket while my hair was dripping wet, and I would have realized much sooner that nursing school was just about the dumbest idea I’ve ever had, as the sight of blood makes me squeamish. And yet, I haven’t learned my lesson yet. Once again, my Mom is offering up advice – this time about dating – that I’m having trouble heeding. My mother, who’s been married for over thirty years, would be a decent source of information on the topic, one should probably assume, but I just can’t seem to get on board. First, my Mom has been telling me that it’s best to date the ugly boys; they’re the ones, she explains, who are the most humble. Second, and this is where she’s really loses me, it’s best to date a man who adores you more than you adore him. Never mind the way my father feels about these pearls of wisdom, I’m totally disheartened by them. After all, Prince Charming
isn’t supposed to be some blemished pug of a man who Cinderella kinda, sorta likes. And Snow White is supposed to fall for the love of her life, not one of the grumpy, sneezy, sleepy dwarfs. There is a reason fairytales aren’t written about lukewarm relationships. And yet, maybe there is something to this, after all. Fairytales aside, in every real-life relationship I’ve encountered, one person is always more invested than the other. Even soul mates can’t be on the same page all the

time; in the same chapter, perhaps, but the on the same exact page? I know couples who consider themselves lucky just to be part of the same book. And if it’s true that one person is bound to be more hung-up than the other, wouldn’t it be better to be the party with a little more clout? The one who’s making the calls instead of anxiously waiting for the phone to ring? The one who’s being pined away for and not vice versa? Or is better to be the one who’s headover-heels? Sure, maybe you’re not the absolute apple of HIS eye, but at least you know in your heart that YOU have found the one you’ve always aspired to be with. If experience has taught me anything, I should probably listen to my mother, and shoot for the man not who makes my heart sing, but the one who makes it hum occasionally. Then again, if I paid attention to experience, I would have thrown in the dating towel sometime after my third relationship. I figure, why the heck not continue looking for Mr. Charming? I’ve never been one to half-ass anything, after all. Except, of course, for nursing school.

What does the phrase “time is of the essence” mean? "Time is of the essence" is a phrase used to emphasize that the actions described need to be completed in a reasonable amount of time. In all matters involving real estate, you need to be as specific as possible. You need to ask your lawyer or real estate agent how much time certain acts will require. Use these time windows where appropriate and include the phrase "time is of the essence" so the time windows are enforceable.

elcome to the Cape May Film Society’s showcase event of the year – the 11th Annual Cape May New Jersey State Film Festival. The festival combines a serious look at New Jersey cinematography with a collection of films that are simply great fun to watch. It’s a juried event that brings out the best of what New Jersey filmmakers have to offer – only about one third of the submitted films are accepted for screening at the festival. This year we’re offering two New Jersey premieres; short films that include documentaries and a Young Filmmakers’ showcase; and selections from New Jersey’s Black Maria Film Festival and from Lincoln Center’s Dance on Camera Festival. We start with a bang on Friday night with a panel discussion of gangster films. We at the Cape May Film Society offer films throughout the year, but this event is our favorite. We’ve been delighted to work with other local organizations to make this one of a series of fall and spring weekends that we hope will entertain our residents and guests alike. Welcome! Danny Provenzano
The Friday night opening features best-selling author George Anastasia. A Philadelphia Inquirer reporter on organized crime, Anastasia has a new book, The Ultimate Book of Gangster Movies. He will lead a panel discussion with director/producer/actor Danny Provenzano, and film enthusiast and Film Festival President Dottie Knapp. It’s an eclectic mix of producers, actors, writers, and film lovers with lots to talk about — and “What’s your favorite gangster film” is only the start! What is your favorite “whack?” What is your favorite fatal romance? Who is your favorite patriarch (and matriarch!)? What is your favorite cat-andmouse game? The Friday night reception and program starts at 7:00pm. Tickets go on sale at 6:00pm exclusively at The Chalfonte Hotel lobby.

Saturday, 3:00pm “Cape May Arts” come alive on film! Meet some of the most celebrated artists in Cape May, including a few salty knitters and maybe even a surprise or two. Sunday Brunch, 11:00am We present the world premiere of four new tourism spots featuring our local favorites (Tommy R., Alicia Grasso, Vickie Tryon, Susan Tischler, and Terri Swain and Glenn McBrearty) in quirky little spots we like to call “Meet Larry Local.” After the tourism spots, local film enthusiasts Dottie and Mal Knapp host a special film clip presentation of the Mob Movie Favorites!
