The EZ Guide To What’s Going On The who, what, when and where of Cape May’s social scene

Thursday, October 27 Tales Of Terror Trolley Ride Begin your build-up to a ghoulish holiday with this haunted half hour. A costumed guide spins tales of terror from the Victorian era as the trolley wends its way past flickering gas lamps through the ghostly streets of Cape May. Bring a friend, in case you need someone to hold on to. Cost is $10 for adults, $7 for children. Departs at 7:30pm from the Information Booth on the Washington Street Mall. For details, call MAC at 609-884-5404. Friday, October 28 The Phantom Ball At Congress Hall This year’s theme, Weird Science, promises plenty of Frankensteins, mad scientists, and hopefully an Igor or two (besides the Igors from Eastern Europe). There will be a psychic on hand to read your fortune, and prizes for the best costume in a variety of categories, including sexiest, scariest and funniest. Admission is $20 and includes a complimentary drink and access to a buffet of BBQ brisket, buffalo chicken and a candy bar. Afterwards, keep the party going downstairs at the Boiler Room. Starts at 8pm. For details call 609-884-8421. Saturday, October 29 SeaSalt Spooktacular Extravaganza Don’t miss this chance to show your costuming skills – compete for best costume prizes (including $250 for first place), choose one of two seatings for a special Halloween prix-fixe dinner, then dance the night away with a live DJ and no cover charge. We also hear they’ll be serving drinks in mini-pumpkins, which is an inspired touch if we’ve ever heard one. For details, call 609-884-7000. Halloween Costume Party At The C-View Inn Don your All Hallow’s best and compete for the scariest and most original costumes from 9:30pm to close. There will be a DJ, dancing, and specials on domestic pints, Green-Eyed Monster Shots and jello shots. For details, call 609-884-4712. Halloween Costume Party At The Ugly Mug Do the monster mash to the live tunes of 5 Hours Jones and compete for great prizes. Every Saturday night at the Mug is a memorable one - this one will feature some added spooky spice. For details, call 609-884-3459. Madame Parmentier’s Psychic Tea At The Carriage House Tearoom Enjoy a Halloween-themed tea at the Carriage

Costumed crowds gather at Congress Hall’s annual Phantom Ball House Tearoom and Café and learn what the future holds for you (all in good fun, of course). During the tea, you’ll encounter fortune-tellers, palm readers, even the odd phrenologist. Enjoy refreshments, outlandish costumes, and the chance learn what delights (or horrors) await you. Tickets are $25, starts at 2:30pm. Reserve you tickets by calling 609-884-5404. Sunday, October 30 Cape May Stage Presents Red Check out the hottest ticket in town. Head to the beautifully restored Robert Shackleton Playhouse to see Red, which follows the experience of expressionist Mark Rothko as he produces a series of commissioned pieces for the famous Four Seasons in New York City. Acted by none other than Roy Steinberg, Artistic Director of the company, it’s sure to be a treat. Show starts at 3pm. General admission is $35. For details and reservations, call Cape May Stage at 609-884-1341.

Tuesday, November 1 Spaghetti And Meatball FUNdraiser At The Cape May VFW Now that the spooky festivities have come to a close, it’s time to gear up for the next big holiday: Christmas! (Our apologies to the pilgrims). In the first of a series of fundraising events, Chef Chris Hubert of the Black Duck and Godmother’s will cook up a storm of Italian goodness, all the proceeds of which will benefit the West Cape May Christmas Parade. Cost is $15, starts at 4:30pm. For details call 609884-1005. Upcoming November 4-6 Sherlock Holme’s Weekend A mystery’s afoot in Victorian Cape May, and we know just the man to solve it. For a preview of what to expect, consult our Activity Column on page 73. For further details and reservations, call MAC at 609-884-5404.

The Police Blotter

WEST SENECA, New York - Police were notified when twelve pairs of sunglasses valued at over $1,625 were stolen from a locked display case at Council Opticians on Seneca Street. No ghost, though – the key was reported to have been left on top of the display case.

Classic Quotations

A Story From The Past “All houses are haunted. All persons are haunted. Throngs of spirits follow us everywhere. We are never alone.” Barney Sarecky “Dreaming men are haunted men.” Stephen Vincent Benet “What terrified me will terrify others; and I need only describe the spectre which had haunted my midnight pillow.” Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley “While filming The Haunting Hour, my co-stars and I visited a haunted house dressed as vampires! We confused the workers.” Cody Linley “I’m not afraid of werewolves, vampires or haunted hotels, I’m afraid of what real human beings do to other human beings.” Walter Jon Williams

When the Hotel Cape May opened for business in April 1908, it offered accommodations for nearly 1000 people, with 330 rooms, wraparound verandas and an ornate ballroom. It was considered the largest hotel in the world. It operated only six months before it was closed due to financial problems. This was just the beginning of problems for the New Cape May project. Within a year, the president of Flinn’s Cape May Real Estate Company, Peter Shields, resigned. Ben Miller

Weird Word Of The Week

CRYPTID – A cryptid is an animal whose existence has not been confirmed by science. The study of these creatures is known as cryptozoology. Cryptid sightings have been documented for centuries, and some of the most popular cryptids through the years include Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, and werewolves.

KNOW your way around Cape May? Think of yourself as the observant type? Feast your eyes on the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Kate Chadwick. If you think you know what establishment you’re staring at, then you have a chance to win a gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter – follow the instructions carefully. And, don’t worry if you have never used Facebook before – it’s easy! Just ask your six-year-old nephew for help. To enter, look for the mystery photo at facebook.com/ exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

Random Fact Of The Week

Ireland is believed to be the birthplace of Halloween. Dressing as ghouls originated from the ancient Celtic tradition of townsfolk disguising themselves as spirits, believing it would allow them to escape the notice of real spirits wandering the streets during the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain.

Fortune Cookie Of The Week J “The true way to soften ones troubles is to solace those of others.” J Once a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with egg rolls. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editors

L

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

AST week, the intrepid EZ staffers attended the monthly city council meeting. (You can read what we hope is an utterly entertaining recap on page 35). Like council meetings everywhere, it was chock full of particularly tortured language about taxes and legislation, which does not exactly make for the most relaxing way to spend an evening. So the following night, we felt determined to find some respite. But where to go? While Cape May has way more going on in the off-season than most shore towns to the north, a Wednesday night in October is sometimes still a Wednesday night in October. Except, we soon discovered, at Big Wave Burritos, the surf-themed chipotle spot on Texas Avenue. What we stumbled into there was the eatery’s first open mic night of the fall season. Every Wednesday evening from now on, while owner Mickey Chew slings burritos, his lovely wife, Kate Delaney, will strum her guitar — playing everything from The Stones to Regina Spektor. Throughout the night, talented locals of every age beat the bongos, jammed on the guitar, and harmonized on the harmonica. Mickey, who grew up just a block away from Big Wave, spent some time surfing and managing a burrito place in Hawaii, but he loved Cape May too much to stay away for long. He and Kate moved back onto the mainland and opened their own shop Memorial Day weekend of 2010. Ever since, no matter how busy they’ve gotten raising their fourmonth-old daughter or battling the brain tumor Mickey was diagnosed with last year, they’ve supported local talent. The open mic nights, they explain, are especially impor-

tant for kids who want to be creative and social, but aren’t old enough for the bars that comprise so much of Cape May’s social scene. And since the salsa nights at Sea Salt we raved about in last week’s column have moved from Wednesday to Friday, you have no excuse not to check it out. But it’s not just musicians who Kate and Mickey strive to help. On one wall hangs the handmade skateboards of manager Rob Wheeler, which are sold out of Big Wave. And all over hangs the artwork of local “surfographer,” David Macomber, whose mixed media pieces combine painting, letter-writing, and photography. “David took some pictures of me surfing and got some artwork out of it,” Mickey says. “I suggested he hang some stuff up, and he decided to quit his job as a graphic designer and pursue this full time. I don’t know if we kind of pushed him off the ledge!” Tomorrow, Friday, October 28, from 6 to 9pm, Big Wave will host David’s art show. While one photo will be from California and one from Hawaii, most will be local. “These photos aren’t necessarily North Shore,” David says, “but they will be real to those who surf

here.” David’s hope, more than even selling artwork or promoting local surfing, is that the community will support Kate and Mickey. “I’m so grateful to Mickey and Kate for giving me a venue,” David says. “I love working with them. There are so many local artists that get seen because of them.” If you’ve got some free time on Friday, we recommend stopping by. Even if artwork isn’t your thing, you’ll enjoy the DJ Kate and Mickey are bringing in and, of course, the food will be delicious. We can’t wait to try the Rio Bowl, which is some kind of Brazilian smoothie so thick, it’s served in a bowl. On another note, we’d like to mention what a huge turn-out there was for trick-or-treating on the mall. We think it’s wonderful that, year after year, so many merchants pony up the candy so that Cape May’s wee ones can have a lovely afternoon. SPEAKING of the mall, according to city council, it may also be smokefree in the future (like Cape May’s beaches, parks, and Sunset Pavilion now are). While we’re all for healthy lungs, we’re also for laws that can be enforced, and we’re not so sure that’s the case with this one. Cape May’s lifeguards have their hands full scanning the water for swimmers in trouble; do we really want them scanning the beach for smokers, too? (Smokers who, being on the beach, are not that bothersome to begin with?) Or are the city’s cops going to be the ones policing the new law? We think there must be a better use of the force’s time and money. (Wasn’t it just last July that Council debated nixing the DARE program due to lack of funds?) Perhaps the best we can hope for is that those smokers who choose to ignore this ordinance at least clean up their butts.

Ghost investigator Craig McManus explains that even spirits love Cape Island... by Diane Stopyra

HIS time of year, we watch movies about chainsaw-wielding axe murderers and blood-sucking vampires for fun. We pay money to have mummies frighten us on after-dark hayrides. All of this because we like being scared. For this reason, tourists flock to Cape May at the end of October. A National Historical Landmark, the town is chock-full of Victorian buildings that many believe are haunted. But according to Craig McManus, author of The Ghosts of Cape May series, the spirits who linger in America’s oldest seaside resort are not the Hollywood kind; you won’t find them popping out of dark closets to say “boo.” If you’re hoping to be chased down by a “headless ghoul,” Craig says, that’s not what you’ll find in Cape May. And he should know. A gifted psychic medium, 49year-old Craig has spent his entire adult life channeling these spirits. Craig first started coming to Cape May from his hometown of Demarest, NJ in the early ‘60s, to visit the aunt and uncle who lived here. As a boy, he was more interested in the roller coasters of the Wildwood boardwalk than the history of the buildings in town, but he felt taken aback by the eeriness of the city nonetheless. “It wasn’t as luxurious back then,” he says. “Houses were condemned. It gave a creepy feeling.” Soon, Craig started hearing echoing noises and seeing vivid colors in his mind, “like an old Beatles movie.” The sensations were so strong, he felt scared to close his eyes. His parents, blaming an overactive imagination, told him to stop watching so much television. Craig himself tried dismissing it, but by the time he reached his late teens, his gift had only grown stronger. Now, he was seeing images of living people before they even showed up in his life, and events before they even occurred. Craig began doing tarot card readings for friends, and realized another ability – the power to communicate with the deceased. Not only was Craig’s gift precognitive, it allowed him to see past lives as well. The skill became alienating. “I felt exhilarated while using it,” Craig says, “but became depressed afterward. I was embarrassed by it.” But Craig couldn’t resist. “Natural evolution” kept pushing him toward a life of extra sensory perception, in the same way that someone who can play the piano is “drawn to a set of keys.” Word-of-mouth spread quickly among those looking to reconnect with loved

Some homes in Cape May have occupants both living and dead... ones who’d passed on. Realizing he could use his gift for good, Craig grew to love it. “When I’d see someone who’d been depressed, it was rewarding to know I could help.” Fascinated by the paranormal activity he had always encountered in Cape May, Craig began staying at local B&Bs, talking to innkeepers about their ghost experiences and having plenty of his own. He did this for 15 years, becoming the leading expert on everything that’s ever gone bump in the night on Cape Island. While there are skeptics (“That’s human nature,” Craig says. “My mission is not to convince them.”), there are plenty of locals who don’t need convincing. This week, Exit Zero caught up with several of them. Waitstaff at one of Cape May’s hottest lunch spots admitted to hearing a ghost call their names and turn on the stereo after hours. “We call him George,” one server said, “and he’s friendly.” Still, the restaurant’s owner leaves a key above the cellar door, so George doesn’t feel trapped and decide to start breaking things. “When he’s not happy,” this server said, “the computer system goes down.” Local hotel workers – night auditors, bartenders, and valets – had similar stories. The manager of one B&B, we’ll call him Mark, witnessed a “visibly shaken” housekeeper explain a jarring encounter. She’d propped the door to a room open by turning the deadbolt, so that she could move freely

between the room and the closet down the hall. Standing between the two spaces, she saw a figure in period dress, top hat and all, move into the room, locking the deadbolt behind him. When the housekeeper used her master key to open the door, no one was there. For the rest of the year, she refused to work on this floor of the building. Since then, a guest of the hotel has emailed Mark a photo she took while vacationing there. In the background is a shadowy figure which, if you look closely, looks just like a man in a top hat. Such spirits, Craig explains, are merely souls with unfinished business. Some might be interested in communicating, and some might “take off out the back door as soon as they see you.” Some have an emotional attachment, while some have a physical attachment, like a house they don’t want to leave. Whatever the reason they continue to linger, the ghosts are likely not seeking us out; we just happen to be in their path. “In this culture,” Craig says, “we often try to make everything about us, but sometimes, it’s just not.” Sometimes, he adds, it’s about Cape May. “This is a very calming place with great energy, something between heaven and earth. Maybe some of these ghosts don’t rush to move on because they’ve always liked it here. Perhaps all they’re looking for...is the suntan lotion.” For more information on Craig and his upcoming ghost tours, visit craigmcmanus.com.

10/1: Beef And Beer Benefit For Peggy Cox At Cape May VFW

«

On October 1, at Cape May’s VFW, over 150 people turned out for a beef and beer benefit for Peggy Cox. Peggy, loving mother of two and grandmother of four, has been battling breast cancer since June. Coping with this disease has made it difficult for her to do her job as a home healthcare worker and MRI technician for Cape Regional Medical Center. A proud local, Peggy is a resident of North Cape May, and a graduate of Lower Township High School who, according to her sister Donna, has “touched the lives of many people.” Here, she gets a bear hug from five of those people. Peggy is third from the left.

The Inside Scoop On City Hall

I

A user’s guide to Cape May City Council meetings... by Kate Chadwick and Diane Stopyra

T IS that time of the month again. No, we’re not talking about that time of the month, though we did witness some PMS-type behavior rearing its ugly head at City Hall during the most recent city council meeting. For those of you who missed out (and that’s quite a bit of you–- there were only nine folks in attendance), we’ve put together a recap, EZ style. Meeting of Cape May City Council, Tuesday October 18, 2011. 7:03 - Your intrepid reporters scramble in just after the Pledge of Allegiance and Proclamation (it’s breast cancer awareness month!). We’ll blame our tardiness on scrounging for change for the parking meter which, appropriately, is the first topic of discussion on tonight’s agenda. 7:04 - Deputy Mayor Jack Wichterman, looking sharp in a violet shirt and charcoal jacket, introduces Ordinance 240-2011, which would exempt handicapped drivers from paying meters. He suggests that Cape May might just be the first city in the state to enact such an ordinance, and that “common

sense is prevailing.” Council members put it to a vote, and it passes unanimously. 7:07 - Deputy Mayor Wichterman then introduces Ordinance 241-2011, regulating bait and tackle vendors. Motion passes again, and he comments on tonight’s meeting being a “piece of cake,” immediately causing us to ponder how good a piece of cake would taste right now. 7:09 - It’s time for council to entertain questions on resolutions. The first, 218, pertains to trick-or-treating, which will occur between 5 and 7:30pm on October 31

(as it should). Deputy Mayor Wichterman says, “We do it every year.” We assume he’s referring to the passing of the resolution, not to trick-or-treating, as we picture council members going door-to-door for candy. Next up is 219, which provides for a closed meeting immediately following the current one to discuss “inter-local agreements with Cape May Point and West Cape May collective bargaining.” The next two resolutions (220 and 221) pertain to convention hall and discuss the first change orders since the inception of the project. Resolution 220 is for the building of a tougher transformer pad, which will cost $6,100. Council explains that such a pad would be safer, more serviceable, and less visible to the public than what was originally planned. Change order number two is for modification of the building’s concrete foundation. Mayor Ed Mahaney reads aloud from the document, which explains that the jetty, the original location for this foundation, was found too unstable to “rest the foundation against.” Then

Page 36 The Inside Scoop On City Hall ? From Page 35 he pauses to note that this should read, “against which to rest the foundation.” Kudos to Mayor Mahaney for being a fellow grammar nerd! Resolutions 222 A and B are for the payment of bills. 7:13 - Councilmember Bill Murray, wearing a baby blue checkered shirt, would like to know how these change orders will affect the total cost of the convention hall project. He reminds council that “we are on a tight budget,” and that change orders must be looked at very closely. We can appreciate a fellow penny-pincher, Councilmember Murray. Journalism doesn’t pay the big bucks. 7:16 - Mayor Mahaney responds that money for unforeseen obstacles like inadequate transformer pads and foundations, is built into the $10.5 million convention hall budget, and that construction is going along swimmingly. We should mention here that every time we hear the word “transformer,” we are thinking about science fiction action films, but that is neither here nor there. 7:20 - Minutes from previous council meetings are accepted, and reports from the Cape May City Police Department, Shade Tree Commission, Cape May City Fire

Thursday, October 27, 2011 Department, and Tourism Commission, are received by City Clerk Diane Weldon, who is sporting an olive-colored suit and lovely brown hair clip this evening. She reminds the council that next month’s meeting will occur on Monday, November 14, and your reporters make a mental note not to plan any trips to the Brown Room on this evening. 7:21 - City Manager Bruce MacLeod, attired in a olive suit, yellow dress shirt and patterned tie, introduces new business, including the upcoming bids for convention hall items such as chair risers, catering kitchen equipment, and a skating rink barrier. We try to imagine anything more idyllic than ocean-side ice skating. At the moment, we cannot. 7:22 – Councilmember Deanna Fiocca, wearing a chic black sweater and jeans, expresses concern about the aerobics classes being held at the Franklin Street School. She says she has been advised that many senior citizens have purchased punch cards in order to gain admittance to these classes. The recent change to $5 dollars per class has made these punch cards void, which is upsetting, considering the lack of activities available to seniors in the city. 7:23 – Mayor Mahaney advises that Manager MacLeod will look into it and report back to Councilmember Fiocca.

Mayor Mahaney then announces the annual drive-through flu clinic at Kindle Auto Plaza on Sunday, October 23, with a reminder that only one clinic will be held this year and to get off the parkway at exit nine. “Most of you will know where that is,” he says, in all seriousness. (Whaddya know, folks – there is life above zero!) Next, the mayor comments on what a “nice joint venture” between the city and its merchants the trick-or-treating on the mall event will be, and that it’s a good way to “tucker out” little ones so that they get a good night’s sleep. Finally, Mayor Mahaney announces that the New Jersey League of Municipalities asked him to write an article for the October issue of the League’s magazine, which he holds up. The article is about economic sustainability being “the crux of Cape May’s future.” We can’t help but notice that all eight people sitting at the council table are sipping from one-time use plastic water bottles, and there’s nothing sustainable about that, but congrats to Mayor Mahaney, anyway. He further states that he will chair a League presentation on this topic on November 19 in Atlantic City. 7:27 - It’s time for the public portion of tonight’s meeting, where those wishing to speak are asked to give their name

and address, and to confine their comments to under five minutes. First up is Kim Burns, representing Tobacco Free for a Healthy New Jersey. She’s here, she tells us, in support of the smoking ban on the Cape May beaches, public parks, Sunset Pavilion, and promenade. “What you’re doing is, like, unbelievably awesome,” she says, smoothing her long blonde locks. She says she would like to offer assistance in any way she can, and suggests providing beachgoers a brochure of sorts. She then muses that a brochure would be too big. Deputy Mayor Wichterman suggests a flyer. 7:29 - A perky gentleman called Dr Bob Zlotnick from Atlantic Prevention Resources in Atlantic County, attired in a gray suit and pink and red bowtie, bless him, bounces toward the podium. He asks if he might have the rest of Kim’s five minutes, but doesn’t wait for an answer before firing suggestions about ways to spread the no-smoking message. “Stickers!” he says. “Plastic information baggies containing a synopsis of the ordinance!” He suggests that one item for each beach tag sold would work well. Deputy Mayor Wichterman chuckles. “You might be surprised by how many are sold,” he says. Then Dr Zlotnick asks if council has considered banning smoking on the Washington Street Mall. “That,” Wichterman repsonds, “will be a topic of conversation for next year.” 7:31 – A gentleman approaches the podium in a white checkered shirt, glasses, and khaki pants that might be just a smidge too large. He introduces himself as Charles Hendricks, “taxpayer,” of Trenton Avenue. He says the city has shared police services with West Cape May and Cape May Point, but that he has documented reasons to believe at least one of these jurisdictions is receiving police

services equal to twice that of what they are paying for, to the tune of $400,000. “I was told by the mayor,” he says, “that there are formulas which dictate these numbers, but I have not been allowed to see them.” 7:32 - Mr Hendrix tugs on his belt loops. 7:33 - City Attorney

Anthony Monzo suggests it is too early for council to make a decision on whether or not this documentation should be released to the public. Deputy Mayor Wichterman says that at least three members of council haven’t seen these formulas themselves. 7:34 - Mr Hendricks tugs on his belt loops again, and thanks the council for their consideration. 7:36 - Bernie Long, of New York Avenue, approaches the podium, also identifying himself as a taxpayer. “We’re at a time when incomes for the private sector,” he intones, “are flat or, in real terms, negative, when real unemployment is likely closer to 20 percent than 10. We’re in the midst of the longest recession in the nation’s history.” As if that weren’t enough to make your trusty reporters want to cry, Mr Long goes on to say that if the press is to be believed (ouch!), Cape May has experienced the second highest tax increase in the county. He wants to know how council plans to make sure this isn’t repeated, particularly given the fact that so many retirees live here. “I’m retired,”

The Inside Scoop On City Hall ? From Page 38 Mr Long says, adding, “I’m only here five months out of the year.” 7:37 - Councilmember Murray responds by saying that the budget process is very open, and that anyone with specific recommendations is welcome, adding that generalizations like “taxes are too high,” are really not that helpful. That’s like, he says, making generalization about “apple pie and motherhood.” (Mmm, apple pie.) Councilmember Murray then suggests that if Mr Long sees mistakes being made, he is more than welcome to point them out. 7:38 - Mr Long responds that specificity is important, but most citizens are not in a position to familiarize themselves with the issues. Mr Long himself is 1,100 miles away for most of the year, for Pete’s sake! Why doesn’t council just declare, “No more tax increases, no more budget increases!”? Surely, he says, this will stimulate specific suggestions. Mr Long adds that it’s the administration, and not the public, who “knows where all the bodies are buried.” (Bodies?!) 7:39 - Councilmember Murray responds that he can’t respond to that. 7:41 - Mr Long responds that he can’t

respond to that response. Your reporters note that Mr Long has reached his five minute max. 7:42 - Mayor Mahaney jumps in, as is his inclination. “I assume you’re referring to

the The Press of Atlantic City article from three weeks ago,” he says to Mr Long, who nods, but not before reiterating his disclaimer that he’s not sure the press is to be believed. Ouch, again. We note that the folks in the comfy seats at the press table don’t even flinch. 7:43 - Mayor Mahaney says that he’s not indicting the press (gee, thanks), but that The Press simply took figures issued by the county and used them to compile a total tax bill, not specific to Cape May City. There was not, as the article suggested, a six percent increase; just a meager sixtenths of one cent increase. And this figure was originally supposed to be a two-cent increase, but was knocked down by the tireless efforts of this very council.

7:46 – Reporter’s note: Mr Long has now doubled his five minute max. He then comments on Lower Township High, “that bloody high school” which taxpayers are made to support, despite the dearth of Cape May students who attend it. He also points out that a recent reevaluation increased his property taxes and those of his fellow citizens. 7:47 - Deputy Mayor Wichterman has apparently heard enough. He responds enthusiastically, and none too happily, punctuating his words with finger points. Since 1974, he explains, school tax has not been predicated on how many children a city sends to the school; it’s predicated on a city’s property values. The amount of members on the board of education, on the other hand, is predicated on how many children you have in school. And, since only the board of education can change this system, it’s a vicious cycle, so, as Wichterman succinctly observes, “We are stuck with it.” 7:48 - Mr Long begins shaking his head in disagreement. “Don’t shake your head at me until I’m finished!” Deputy Mayor Wichterman snaps. He pushes his chair away from the table. Councilmember Terri Swain, in basic black, reaches for her

non-sustainable water bottle; suddenly it’s very hot in here. City Attorney Anthony Monzo swivels in his chair. “The average tax bill in Cape May city is $4,000,” Wichterman says. “In the state, it’s $7,000. We do a darn good job on this council. You should be darn happy you live here, and not in Ringwood, New Jersey.” (No offense to any Ringwood readers, but we think that was a darn good response.) 7:53 - Mr Long snaps “Good job patting yourselves on the back,” while somehow conceding Wichterman is correct on some points. He attempts to walk away, after reiterating for a third time that he doesn’t always believe the press, anyway. Alright, already! But City Manager Bruce MacLeod stops Mr Long. He makes the point that a reevaluation of taxes does not automatically mean a tax increase, simply a redistribution of the tax base. 7:56 - Mr Long makes his final remark. “People aren’t going to want to come to Cape May,” he says. “They’re going to say, ‘look at what they’re doing with their taxes there.’ It will give us a black eye.” Since he is now 15 minutes beyond his five minute max, your EZ reporters are wondering if someone is going to give Mr Long a black eye. 7:57 - Jay Schatz takes center stage. He recalls a number of Cape May’s famous “nuisance laws,” like “no bare chests for men” and “no bare feet on the promenade.” Mr Schatz says he was “particularly gratified when the no-Speedo ordinance was repealed,” which elicits chuckles. Mr Schatz implies that the smoking ban is just another nuisance law. He notes that while the law is “well-intentioned,” he doubts the folks behind it would like to explain to our Canadian summer visitors why they can’t smoke on a public beach. He then says that the burden of enforcement will fall to lifeguards, adding, “If you ain’t

gonna be able to enforce it, you shouldn’t oughta pass it.” Mr Schatz wraps up by saying that he doesn’t know how many smokers still head to the beach, anyway; he doesn’t get there much himself. “That’s why innkeepers and locals are all so pale,” he says. He ends by applauding the handicapped parking ordinance, though he hopes people won’t take advantage, a problem resulting from “an awful lot of handicap parking stickers floating around.” Deputy Mayor Wichterman assures him ordinance will be enforced. 8:00 - Bernie Haas of Illinois Avenue takes the podium. He wants to know if the owners of the Beach Theatre will be reassessed now

that the Beach Theatre is no more. Mayor Mahaney says this will be reviewed by the tax assessor. Then, Mr Haas asks if the city EVER plans to hang the “National Historic Landmark” banners, and then questions their actual existence. Mayor Mahaney says that it is their intention to do so, and that he hopes it will happen. We hope so, too. Finally, Mr Haas asks if the Beach Theatre site is destined to become a parking lot. Mayor Mahaney says that this question should be directed to the Franks. 8:04: Meeting is adjourned. Everyone shuffles out. 8:07: Perky Dr Zlotnick tosses mini beach balls which read “Tobacco Free for a Healthy New Jersey” toward your EZ reporters. We take our balls and go to the Ugly Mug.

It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year

The West Cape May community strives to keep the annual Christmas parade alive... by Diane Stopyra

W

E KNOW, it’s only October. Plenty of Jack-o-lanterns are still lighting up the porches of local B&Bs, so Christmas is likely the last thing on your mind. But for West Cape May Mayor Pam Kaithern and her team, the West Cape May Christmas Parade has been a topic of conversation since last summer. That’s how long it takes to plan “one of the biggest holiday season parades in the tri-state area.” This year’s event, the 46th annual, will include local dance groups, cub scout troops, fire trucks, approximately a dozen bands and, of course, Santa. While the parade is imperative for “the economic vitality of the town,” it’s even more important for the way it unites the community. “This is a chance,” the mayor says, “to celebrate alongside our neighbors. It’s a warm, fuzzy event that encompasses decades of tradition.” A major part of this tradition is Charlotte Daily, the 80-year-old woman who’s been running the event for the past 46 years, a number she is hoping will be

50 some day, as long as the parade receives enough support to continue. For all of these reasons, the mayor asks that you mark your calendars for this year’s parade fundraisers, which provide 50% of the funding. The first of these events, the Spaghetti and Meatball Dinner, will take place at the VFW on Tuesday, November 1, from 4:30 to 8pm. Chris Hubert, acclaimed chef of the Black Duck and Godmother’s, will do all the cooking. The cost is $15, and tickets will be available at the door. “It’s not like we cover expenses and then the leftover money goes to the parade,” the Mayor says. “Everything goes; this is not funded through tax dollars.”

The second event is the Winter Wonderland Warm Up, taking place in the Congress Hall ballroom from 6 to 8pm on Thursday, November 10. To entertain the wee ones, Mrs Claus and Blue the Pig will be in attendance. Attendees will savor cups of hot chocolate and the live music of local artists. “It will be your neighbors and friends who are playing,” the mayor says, “not strangers coming in from who knows where.” The donation request is $20, while children are welcome at no extra charge. Finally, on Sunday, November 20, West Cape May firefighters will host a Chicken and Dumpling Dinner, hosted at the West Cape May Fire Hall. Local celebrity chefs will be cooking the meal, which includes a salad bar, dessert and beverage. The $20 tickets are available in advance at Borough Hall or at the door. This event, like all the others, is “absolutely family friendly.” If you’d like to kick off this season of giving by donating your time to any of the above fundraisers or to the parade itself, Mayor Kaithern welcomes the help. She can be reached at 884-1005, extension 2.

y sister once punched me in the forehead so hard, she broke her hand. As her fingers starting changing color, she begged me not to tell our parents. Of course, I never would have done that. No matter how brutal our fights got, no matter how many just-learned curse words we’d try out on one another, no matter how many clothes we’d borrow from one another without permission, neither of us would ever tattle. It was an unspoken code between us. With my head pounding and her hand swelling, Donna and I concocted a story. We hadn’t been fighting, we told our parents on the way to the emergency room, we’d been playfully rough-housing with our cousin David in the backyard. David, we said, had innocently tackled Donna to the ground – out of love, of course – and he didn’t know his own strength. It really was quite funny, we’d said through nervous laughter, when you thought about it. Mom and Dad were annoyed, but they bought the story nonetheless. I had a lump on my fore-

head that I covered with shaggy bangs, and Donna suffered through a cast for six weeks, but that was the worst of it. No harm, no foul, no-tattling policy still intact. Years later, when I nearly destroyed my parents’ house with an out-of-control party, Donna covered for me. The Stone sisters would never dream of diming one another out. Perhaps this is why I’m constantly so floored by my customers: so many of you are a bunch of tattletales. If I forget a spoon or don’t have time to refill your water, you want to speak with my manager. You’re like the kids in my Catholic elementary school who wrote the names of “talkers” on the board when Sister McCarick stepped

out of the room. But here’s the thing, Mr I’m-going-to-need-a-pen-to-fill-out-mycomment-card: those kids didn’t have any friends. Those kids grow up to be the guy in the office who runs to his supervisor every time he sees Chuck in the next cubicle playing computer solitaire while on the clock. Don’t get me wrong, if your server is rude or your meal is inedible, you have a right to complain. But the most vocal tattletales are usually the ones with the least valid gripes. And I can’t understand why these folks would get their kicks from throwing someone under the bus. Perhaps you want a free meal. Perhaps your boss is sick of you, so you’ve decided to suck up to mine. Perhaps misery loves company. Whatever it is, I feel jealous. If a missing spoon is going to get your goat, your problems must be very small. But I’d be careful, because no one likes a tattletale. One day, when someone without a server’s tolerance has had his fill of you, you’re likely to get clocked, maybe even in the forehead. And when you do, no one is going to have your back.

The Answer Lady

T

Wise answers to perplexing questions

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady A friend and I shared a place in Cape May this past summer and had a blast! Now we’re home (until next summer!), but I realized she still has some of my clothes. I’ve messaged her a few times, asking her to send them back, but no response! I’d like at least some of these things back. What’s my next move? – Undressed Dear Undressed The Answer Lady would guess that your next move involves living without those clothes, as she wagers you will not see them again until AT LEAST next summer, if ever. Your friend’s silence on the subject indicates that she has either accidentally ruined them, lent them to someone else and not received them back, graciously donated them to charity, conveniently forgetting they weren’t hers to donate, or has grown so attached to them

that she has moved, leaving no forwarding address. Back when the Answer Lady worked for the airlines, she used to remind passengers that a good rule of thumb for packing is to not include anything that one cares about ever seeing again. Not that one should expect a friend/roommate to behave like an unruly baggage handler, but things happen. Dear Answer Lady On last week’s column – I don’t get it. Why should a guy have to hold a woman’s purse when she goes into a changing room?

Is the changing room somehow purse-repellant? Doesn’t it have hooks to hang the purse on, a bench or chair to set the purse on, or a floor to place the purse on? If a purse enters a changing room, is it instantly transported across the space-time continuum to another dimension? Since I don’t ask a woman to hold my wallet while I try something on, I don’t comprehend this whole thing. Is it somehow linked to the reason women go to the bathroom in groups, and thus forever incomprehensible to men? – Hung Up On Handbags Dear Hung Up The Answer Lady does not quite comprehend the purse/changing room phenomenon either, to be frank. She doesn’t even bring her purse into a store if she is going to try things on (an admittedly rare occurrence). It seems to her, however, that if a lady asks a gentleman to hold her purse briefly, he should not view this request as a direct attack on his masculinity. This issue is unrelated to women using public restrooms en masse. The Answer Lady cannot solve that mystery either, but if she could she’d probably have to kill you anyway, so it’s just as well.

alloween: the day when parents encourage little boys to dress like little girls and little girls to dress like whores. Call me a curmudgeon, but I always have a hard time getting into the spirit. The last time I put together a costume was almost two decades ago in Chicago, when I went out to a club wearing a full cowboy get-up. Hat, duster, boots, bandanna, lariat. . . and as I walked in, I heard an uncostumed person say, “I didn’t know they had a country band playing here tonight.” That did it for me and dressing up. I’m also looking for some gender equality in costumes. Guys have to actually think about a costume, maybe buy one, but there’s definitely a process involved. Girls can just go out wearing trashy lingerie, and chances are they’ll get their photo in Exit Zero. Halloween is nothing if not discriminatory. Admittedly, I’ve had a difficult enough time figuring out just who I am without muddling things by wearing masks. If Halloween is all about dressing up as who

you want to be, well, what if I just want to be myself? I’m happy with me, and dressing as a fireman or an astronaut or a razor-clawed slasher isn’t going to make me feel better about myself. And in my eight Halloweens here, I’ve yet to have a single trick-or-treater darken my doorstep. I sit there with my bowl of candy, and nobody shows up to eat it. (Of course, the neighborhood kids have also probably seen me out in my woods, working with axe and

chainsaw, so there could be a connection.) There’s nothing fun about eating a bag of fun-sized Snickers alone. And people who put costumes on their dogs? My hound is far too dignified, and though a set of devil horns would fit his personality, I’m not so cruel as to go that route. So, Halloween and I just don’t see eye-to-eye. Which is not to say that I have no plans. I’m starting off Halloween morning – before the candy begins – with a visit to my favorite dental technician, Heidi. And this time (with the help of the dentist, who has been providing me with inside information) I’m finally going to ask her out. And if she says no, well – it’s the perfect day to drown my humiliation in chocolate. Let’s enjoy dinner, and then see if there’s room left over for candy. Send an email to info@exitzero.us, and we’ll go to dinner at one of the Cape’s fine eating establishments. Afterwards I’ll write all about it, a combined date and restaurant review. Your name will be changed, the restaurant’s won’t. We can wear costumes, too, if you’re into that sort of thing.

The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

T

here are a great many ghosts stalking the D’Catur Mansion, but only one do I truly fear. I refer not to the headless horseman who clatters up and down the hall at the stroke of midnight. Nor to the wailing procession of chained and manacled Irishmen who were walled up in the basement when the mansion was built to avoid paying them the wages owed. And I am talking not about the moaning howling menagerie of ghostly animals I have hunted and mounted on the wall over many decades (before seeing the error of my ways) and which prowl this house once a year looking for their missing body parts. No, dear hearts, I refer to the most fearsome specter of all, the one that every Hallow’s Eve comes looking for me, and that I cannot hide from. The ghost, I tell you, of myself! Oh yes, such a thing is possible. Awful, but possible. And here’s how it happened: I was exploring in Darkest Africky, when one of my native bearers stumbled upon an ancient jungle tomb. He took one look

at the worn inscription above the door, dropped his load (I refer to my luggage…) and fled into the trees. When I tried to force the others in, they refused, and trembling, translated the wording as “He who enters is cursed with himself.” Shouldering them aside, I entered and, as was customary, removed all jewels and trinkets and gold, kicking over and grinding underfoot such things as caskets, cadavers, pottery and artwork. I must say I felt fine, and the proceeds paid for this house’s South Wing, which as

Window Fashions

you know is composed entirely of panes of purest crystal, inlaid with jade. However, the very first Hallowe’en afterwards, staff reported seeing me wandering the highest floors of the mansion in the wee small hours, moaning and slack jawed. They assumed delirium or opium, and said naught, but year by year, the sightings grew more alarming, the phantom more solid, and approaching ever closer to my bedroom. Last year, it got so far as to scratch on the door, and this year, I fear, it will finally be upon me. Thus I dispatched my faithful serving man Kitchener to Africky to that very tomb, to try and find a cure. To my delight, he is this very day returned, and has a translation of the very thing to end the curse. Not cure it, exactly, but to transfer it to someone else. All that was needed was to write about it, and end with the word “Aahmandium!” and the very first person to read it in this rag of a newspaper would become the new target. I do apologise, old friends: one of you will this Hallowe’en receive their first visit. It could be you …

Activity Of The Week

W

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Sherlock Holmes Weekend

ANT to join the unofficial force of Baker Street Irregulars at Cape May’s Sherlock Holmes Weekend.? “Not a word! Into your clothes and come!” Sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts (MAC), Sherlock Holmes Weekend, November 4-6, brings fans flocking to Cape May, with all the elements of a whodunit. Suspense: will Cape May’s Victorian charm stand up to the scrutiny of Mr Holmes? Mystery: will Holmes and Watson solve the case before Sunday lunch? Fashion: which participant will stroll the streets dressed in the finest Victorian costume? The character of Sherlock Holmes epitomizes the Victorian era, using science to out-sleuth traditional policemen. He values exercise, including boxing and fencing, and believes a gentleman should know how to defend himself. Holmes is imperfect – an arrogant drug addict and a bit of a bully. But who doesn’t love Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories of flawed genius? Perhaps that’s why Sherlock Holmes outlasted the Victorian era.

On film, Basil Rathbone’s Holmes fought Nazis. The BBC’s 2010 version places Holmes in contemporary London, with Dr Watson fresh from war in Afghanistan. Holmes is the inspiration for television’s House, a doctor who solves medical mysteries. At Sherlock Holmes Weekend, Holmes and Dr Watson investigate the Case of The

Surreptitious Ghoul, and meet the Gothic Habitants of Underground London Society, or G.H.O.U.L.S. A crime is committed, and the duo needs your help to solve the case. Search for clues and compete for prizes over the weekend, with all revealed on Sunday. The excitement begins – or, “The Game is Afoot” – at a reception on Friday evening, at The Rose Room, Inn of Cape May. Participants “Search for Clues” Saturday afternoon on a self-guided tour of Cape May inns, “The Game Continues” at the Rose Room Saturday at 3:30pm. “Holmes Unlocks The Mystery!” on Sunday at 12:30pm, with winners announced and prizes awarded. Amateur detectives can purchase an overnight package, including the activities and a stay at one of Cape May’s historic inns. Information is available from MAC, at 8845404 or capemaymac.org. If that’s not enough Sherlock for you, the East Lynne Theater Company presents Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Norwood Builder on Saturday, November 5, at 8pm. Tickets are $25, $15 for students. Next week: Cape May County Zoo

How long have you worked here? Oh, it’s been a long time , since back when the Chamber was still over at the Fudge Kitchen, upstairs. Best thing about the job? Meeting all the people, of course! What do you recommend to visitors? They usually have an idea, especially the ones from the buses. They almost always ask about is how to get to the mall or to the lighthouse. What’s your OTHER dream job? I’m retired – that is a dream job. Favorite thing about Cape May? What’s not to love? BURLY is a handsome five-year-old lab mix who weighs in at a whopping 115 pounds. He is a strong boy and he has a tendency to pull on his leash when he goes for walks, but with training, this can be easily corrected. Otherwise, Burly is sweet and social; he gets along with everyone he meets. All that is missing from his life is a home. If you are looking for a faithful companion, Burly is waiting. Adoption fee is $35.

«

COOKIE is a sweet one-year-old gal. She is a little timid at first but after warming up, she is a playful and obedient doggie. She’s going to need a bit more training, and will need someone with patience and a firm hand to guide her, but she’ll pay you back with lots of love and affection. If you are the kind soul who can offer her a new home, stop by and meet Cookie today. Adoption fee is $95.

«

SONIC is a personable one-year-old American Eskimo/Sheltie mix who was surrendered to our shelter after being a little too rambunctious with his owner’s young child. He needs a home where he’ll get lots of training and exercise. Most importantly, he will need lots of understanding; in his mind, he was just being the playful, funloving puppy he is; the one who would love to be your companion. Adoption fee is $95.

CASSY is a domestic short-hair Barn Buddy. Like all Barn Buddies at the shelter, Cassy will arrive spayed, after receiving rabies and distemper vaccines, Feline Leukemia and FIV testing. Barn Buddies, who will keep rodents from running amock in your barn are also ear-tipped. For more information, call 465-8923.

«

HUMPHREY is a sweet, mature boy who loves attention. Despite having had a rough life so far (his owners left him to fend for himself), you’ll be hard-pressed to find a cat as loving. Humphrey is also FIV-positive. This can only spread to other felines, so humans have nothing to worry about. The adoption fee is $8.

«

OREO is a quiet old gal, who is looking for a quiet space, and just a little bit of love and affection in her golden years. She is very affectionate, and she enjoys being pet. If you’re in the market for a low-maintenance friend, stop by the shelter and meet her today. Oreo will repay your good deed with lots of love.

HE long-awaited opening night for John Logan’s play, RED, is finally here. The show tells the story of Mark Rothko, the artist who returned what was the largest amount of money given for a commission to date, all so he could retain possession of his paintings. Tonight, October 27, is the official opening night at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse. The cast party, being hosted at Hemingway’s in the Grand Hotel on Beach Drive, will be held following the show. This is your chance to engage the director and cast in conversation. Chris Dolman, the director of RED, is known to Cape May Stage audiences from Above: Matisse’s “The Red Studio,” plays a central role in the play RED. Referring to this piece, the character, Mark Rothko, says, “You could trace everything I do today, you could trace the bloodline back to that painting...” Below Left: Actors Roy Steinberg (left) and Chris Dolman stand in front of the painting at MOMA in New York. the beginning days of this theatre; he directed Doubt and performed in Art. With Red, Dolman continues the tradition of working in monosyllabically titled plays. His friendships in the community are many, dating back to Michael Laird, the founder of the Cape May Stage theatre. In Red, Artistic Director Roy Steinberg will make his Cape May Stage acting debut playing Mark Rothko. Steinberg brings an impressive pedigree of acting experience. with him. The director appeared on Broadway in the Tony-nominated play Wings with Constance Cummings. He played opposite Christopher Walken in Measure For Measure and opposite William Hurt in Lanford Wilson’s The Rhimers of Eldritch. He won the Best Actor Award at Yale Drama School where he received his MFA in Acting. In subsequent years, he has

Bird Droppings

O

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

KAY. This is it. Your big chance. You can become a birder this week. or forget it. Yes, this is New Jersey Audubon’s big weekend in Cape May. It’s been part of the social landscape since 1946. It’s part happening; part treasure hunt and a great way to find out why bird watching has become North America’s second-largest outdoor activity. It’s also the nation’s longest running “birding festival.” Today there are thousands of such gatherings across North America. Back in 1946, the idea was novel. But there was no more likely place to host a gathering of the bird watching clan than Cape May. Heck, bird watchers have been coming to Cape May since the early 1800s. Of course they didn’t come for a festival. They didn’t even call themselves bird watchers. But Cape May’s fame as a migratory hotspot is as enduring as it is justified. You are invited to put it to the test. “But,” you are thinking, “I don’t know

anything about watching birds.” All I have to say is: “How lucky can you get? The only thing better than being an experienced birder is being an inexperienced one." Every bird you see is new; exciting and new. You’ll be able to see scores of new birds in a single weekend. Birds of every stripe and hue. Sea ducks, hawks, eagles, warblers,

kinglets, sparrows, thrushes, owls.... Owls? Yep. Owls. And “see” may overstate the fact. There are lots of owls in Cape May. Some breed here; some winter here. Late October is prime time for migrating owls. But most owls are heard, not seen. And you do have to know a few tricks; know where to go and what to listen for. “But,” you’re thinking again, “I don’t know anything about bird watching and don’t want to look foolish.” Relax. Bird watching is a low-stakes game. Nations don’t fall. Currencies don’t collapse. The worst thing that can happen is that you misidentify a bird. No big deal. The difference between a beginning birder and an experienced one is that thus far inexperienced birders have misidentified very few birds. Expert birders have misidentified thousands. And all those experts are going to be in the field, leading field trips, so you don’t

Did you ever wonder WHY all documented ghost photographs are blurry? It’s because Spirits are partly in the FOURTH dimension and cameras’ lenses cannot capture that. Until now, that is! The world famous D’Catur Labs at Caltechh have invented a lens that records what WE see, not what IT sees, using twin laser-cut optics designed for the Hubble space telescope. Bird Droppings ? From Page 81 even have to misidentify birds. All you need to do is show up. It helps to have binoculars. They are the tools that bring supernatural intimacy with birds. In point of fact they are the tool that defines birding. It’s a good idea to have a book to help you identify birds, too. No. Not when you are in the field being led by experts. So you can study the birds you saw in the field and sanctify them with a CHECK next to their name. See the bird. Check it off. You have another species on your Life List. Collect all 10,000 species on the planet and you win... Win what? A lifetime of excitement, discovery, pleasure, new friends, great travel destinations... and a great deal of understanding about the world you live in. Birds are nature’s most obvious envoys. Understand birds and you have a window into the workings of the entire natural world. Step one. Come on the Cape May Autumn Weekend. Step two. Buy binoculars and a field guide at the CMBO member discount.

Cape May has a high concentration of GreatHorned Owls – spot one this fall. But you say you are not a member? You will be. If you want to find out what the Cape May Autumn Weekend is all about, or if you want to forgo the weekend and just find out what’s happening in nature, stop over to the Cape May Bird Observatory THE place for all your nature needs. from 9:30am to 4:30pm (9am-4pm during Autumn Weekend, Oct 28-30). While you're there check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars, pick up a free map and schedule of daily walks and programs for the season, take a look at the sighting sheets to check what's being seen, scan the bookshelves or pick up a bargain from the used and vintage books section, look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise (including a terrific lithograph done just for the Cape May Bird Observatory), or just browse around. Sit outside on our garden benches and enjoy the birds at the feeders and the view of Lake Lily. If you can’t make it in person, visit us online at BirdCapeMay.org – where birding Cape May is only a click away! Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey's own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at the CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.

The Dating Column

I

Stella Dixon's take on romance on Old Cape Island

am a firm believer that people should be able to date whomever they choose. Of course, there are a few big exceptions. No one in their right mind should be trying to court minors, anything that can be purchased at PetSmart, or Glenn Beck, but other than that, who cares who you are loving as long as you are loving someone? If you want to date a person of the same sex or of a different generation, and that person enjoys your company, too, then by all means, nourish the hell out of that relationship. I would never dream of begrudging anyone the right to romance. Well, almost. In the spirit of full disclosure, there is one coupling that annoys the hell out of me. It's a silly pet peeve, I know, and it's totally discriminatory. But I can’t help it. I am really bothered by short women who date tall men. Intellectually, I know that petite women have just as much a right to the six footers of Cape May as the tall ones do, but I can't help but feel a twinge of irritation whenever I see such a pairing. When you're a lady who’s only five feet tall, you can spend time with whom-

ever you like without height being an issue; even a tiny Tim is likely to tower over you. So why must you snatch up one of the few available men who is going to tower over me? At 5'8", I’m not super tall, but I am tall-ish. In my favorite pair of heels, I look ridiculous next to anyone who’s not an ogre. On the treadmill at Cape Fitness the other day, I watched a daytime talk show where a panel of guys discussed height differences in relationships. The short ones all agreed:

the taller the lady the better. Apparently, for vertically challenged men, a tall woman is an exciting challenge, like a mountain waiting to be scaled. The panel’s taller men, on the other hand, felt none of this macho incentive. They cared more about a pretty face and shapely legs. Unfortunately, this particular mountain would prefer it if her future rock climber didn’t have to look up the first time he gazes into her eyes. Ironically, it’s only the shorties who seem interested in me recently. I know, I’m probably being superficial. But I think everyone has got some kind of hang-ups about height. Last week, a friend told me about his crush on the singer Shakira. “Really?” I said. “I heard she’s only four-foot-eleven.” He thought about it for a moment before responding: “Imagine how manly I'd look to a woman that small.” So there you have it, dear reader. Once and for all, size does matter. Maybe such dating discrimination makes me shallow; that’s probably fair. But I figure if I’m going to spend my entire dating life feeling like a mountain of a woman, I can at least make the effort to be an honest one.
