ELTC Presents Sherlock Holmes’ Adventure Of The Norwood Builder East Lynne Theater Company has revived their popular production with a new mystery. Henry Sawyer constructed his famous boarding house on Howard Street in 1875, naming it “Chalfonte,” French for “cool fountain.” There has been much speculation over the name, ranging from a book Sawyer read to a man he met in Libby Prison during the Civil War. Ramblings From The Editors

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
espite the stereotype, it simply isn’t true that all journalists get the most satisfaction out of publishing bad news (the more tragic the better) and scandalous gossip. Case in point: we didn’t enjoy publishing the story about Higher Grounds coffee shop this week. Our mission at Exit Zero is to promote the good and the great things about Cape May. But we also pride ourselves on updating our readers with the news and views we think they need to hear about (and, okay, we sometimes DO print the odd piece of scandalous gossip). In the case of the Higher Grounds situation, we felt the need to set the record straight since Facebook, that receptacle of gossip, speculation and, on occasion, pointless, puerile trivia, has been lit up with claims and counter-claims. The issue was the decision by the coffee shop’s owner Katie Panamarenko to remove a rainbow flag from her front door, which had been hoisted by Out & About & Proud in Cape May, a group which promotes gay-friendly events in the city and which was holding a meeting there at the time. There are usually two sides to every story, and this case is no different. We believe that Katie’s mother made some insensitive remarks in the aftermath of the f lag-lowering (we don’t agree that being gay-friendly is “bad for business”) and we also feel that some members of the gay community over-reacted in the heat of the moment. You can read the full story on page 34, and we hope that after you and everyone else does, little more will need to be said on the subject – apart, perhaps, from a sincere
at the Ugly Mug, Blue Pig Tavern or Pilot House, or warm up with a hot chocolate at Congress Hall’s Winter Wonderland. Speaking of supporting worthy local causes, make plans for Trivia Night at Cape May Winery on Tuesday, November 15 at 7pm to benefit the Gene Sole Scholarship Fund. Enjoy delicious chili, hot mulled wine and prizes, and pay with a donation to their Great Citizen container. This annual scholarship fund has been established to assist worthy Lower Cape May Regional students who exhibit qualities of good character in their community, school and personal endeavors. It’s a great way to honor the memory of a man who touched the lives of so many people in the community. And on the topic of community issues, a pesky and persistent one has apparently been resolved with the help of our own Ben Miller. Is it Beach Drive or Beach Avenue, dammit? It’s Beach Avenue, as it turns out, and you can check the map from 1878 that is posted on the EZ Facebook page. (This would be an example of the use of Facebook in a positive way, dear readers.) Ben is always posting fascinating and informative bits of historic information for Cape May lovers both on the EZ page and on Cape May Good Times. Check it out. Oh, and one last thing: a reminder in case we are your sole source of information (and we are, aren’t we?). This Sunday, November 6, is the day we turn our clocks back (spring forward, fall back). Yes, yes, it’s hard to lose daylight in such a beautiful place, but then again you can enjoy more of Cape May’s nightlife this way. See? Glass half full. Bottoms up.

On a lighter note about local businesses, with Halloween over we’ve got the holiday shopping season squarely in view, so hopefully you’re working on that shopping list. And we also hope that rather than heading to the mall up the road, you consider our charming mall here in town. Make a day of it, and turn your holiday shopping into an event rather than a chore. “Exit Zero” chats with Sherlock Holmes... by Diane Stopyra
HIS weekend, the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts is sponsoring Sherlock Holmes Weekend. Folks will enjoy Victorian Cape May while channeling their inner detectives, competing for a $250 prize by solving a mystery. The capstone to the weekend is a trip to the East Lynne Theater Company for Sherlock Holmes’ Adventure of the Norwood Builder, performed radio-style. The show, complete with live commercials and sound effects, pays homage to the Holmes radio series of the 1930s. This week, Exit Zero caught up with East Lynne’s Sherlock (aka Lee O’Connor). Turns out, even the world’s most famous detective has lots of opinions about Cape May. That’s just elementary, dear readers... You are rarely seen without your pipe. How do you feel about Cape May’s new law banning smoking on Cape May beaches? The question becomes: Is it up to government to get involved, or is it up to the individual to use common sense, maturity, and courtesy? Hmm... that IS the question. Dr Watson is your right hand man. (He’s kind of like the Deputy Mayor Wichterman to your Mayor Mahaney.) Does he ever get sick of being second-in-command? Good man, that Watson. He quite likes being reference material and guidance for me. Modern readers have speculated that you have Asperger’s syndrome, because of your intense attention to detail. Is this true? Asperger’s, this is a term I am not familiar with. Good work; that is what I am familiar with, and that is what I do. And what about the depression speculation? We all have our little vices; Watson has his, I have mine. I like to take the occasional pipe full of medicinal quality cocaine. But that is to alleviate the pressures of solving these wonderful mysteries. You are Baker Street’s most famous resident. What is your favorite Street in Cape May? Washington Street; it’s certainly the prettiest. Only one woman, Irene Adler, has ever captured your fancy. In the past, you’ve said that women are not to be trusted. How do you feel about Cape May women? If you were going to take one on a date here, what would you plan? The reason I made that comment was because a woman’s emotions get the better of her. In my line of work, it’s all about evidence, fact after fact; I think you ladies may

As far as women in Cape May, I happen to think that the New York influence combined with the Philadelphia/ Baltimore influence is quite appealing. The women here are delightful, well-educated, and fun; their laughter echoes throughout the halls of this town. Where to go? For a stroll on the beach, enjoying the nature God has given us. Over 75 actors have played you on screen and stage throughout the years. Of all these actors, who did the best job and worst jobs? Intriguing question. My estate was approached and since I was not available, I could not appear as myself. That would have been the appropriate choice. But I am quite fond of Mr Robert Downey Jr’s work. Of course, some aspects of Mr Downey’s portrayal also qualify him as the worst. The deerstalker hats you wear aren’t exactly in fashion anymore. If you were going to shop in Cape May, where would you go? The fact that those items are no longer in style means nothing, my dear lady. They were at one time. And since I do not shop for clothing, I could not answer that question. You often go days without eating. But even Sherlock Holmes has got to eat. Where do you love to eat in Cape May? The plethora of choices makes it rather difficult to choose, but I am partial to Aleathea’s at the Inn of Cape May. Wonderful salmon. You have a reputation for being a gentle-
man. What, in your opinion, does it mean to be a gentleman? I would have to say it is respect for the members of the opposite sex. The good Lord has seen fit to give you beauty, laughter, gorgeous smiles, and the ability to create human life, and that is why I respect the female of our species. Are they equal to my mind? Are they as smart as I am? No. You were killed by your arch nemesis in 1893. The public was so upset, you had to come back to life. Many explanations have been given for your hiatus. Some authors say rehab. Let’s put the mystery to rest. Where were you, really? My dear, my “addiction” to cocaine was highly overstated. And as anyone in this culture or my own can attest, when you find something that makes you very happy, it is but human nature to pursue it, which I did, all around the Mediterranean. I was relaxing. When you are a master of disguise, what do you wear for Halloween? There is a part of my twisted personality that enjoys scaring the bejabbers out of children. I went as the Hunchback of Notre Dame. You’re known for your cold logic. Do you have any logical piece of advice for our readers? To come here is to appreciate nature first; I’m told this is the only barrier island with trees. If you don’t know this, you may want to check your facts, or I could have Watson do it for you. Secondly, appreciate man’s work, as it is inspired by the Lord. And thirdly, appreciate the wide open space.

Looking For The Common Ground
The story of what happened at Higher Grounds that so offended a Cape May social group ... by Diane Stopyra
H
IGHER Grounds coffee shop has sponsored events from progressive drum circles to impromptu jam sessions on the harp and Celtic flute. It’s hosted open mic poetry nights, a performance of raqs al sharqi (“dance of the orient”) and a celebratory art show paying homage to the United Nation’s worldwide peace movement. In short, Katie Panamarenko, the West Cape May coffee shop’s 26-year-old owner, has made a great effort to integrate with, and inspire and entertain, the island community. One local paper went so far as to label her a modern-day “flower child.” Now, some locals are calling for a boycott of Higher Grounds, claiming that she shunned the gay community. So what happened? At Higher Grounds on October 15, Panamarenko hosted a meeting of “We’re Out & About & Proud in Cape May,” a social organization based on Facebook. During the meeting, Panamarenko authorized her mother to take down the rainbow flag
the group had hung on the front door. The action, along with the exchanges that have followed since, have left supporters of both Panamarenko and the gay community irate and disheartened. For the October meeting, Panamarenko granted permission once again, assuming that the flags would be hung in the same locations they’d been hung before. This time, though, an extra flag was attached to the front door of the building. Panamarenko took issue with this. “I am extremely proud to be Ukrainian,” she says, “but you won’t see a Ukrainian flag on the front door. My father owns a gun shop in Philadelphia, but I won’t hang an NRA sticker either, not even if it would help my family’s business. I won’t hang anything – not a cross, not an OM, not a PETA sticker, no matter where I personally stand, not anything that puts me or anyone who comes through my door in a box. There was no other principle involved in this. Higher Grounds is not affiliated with anything but fair trade and organic. The door is neutral; there is nothing there that says we serve any one group, so that every group feels welcome.” But Steve Platt, an accountant who splits time between West Cape May and Philadelphia, thinks that “welcome” is the
Thursday, November 3, 2011 opposite of what Out & About was made to feel. “For a business to regularly host a group of gay people,” he says, “happily take their money, and yet insult the entire group at the same time is unconscionable.” Fellow Out & About supporter Joan Curran agrees, saying that the incident has made her feel “disappointed and disillusioned.” Thomas Raniszewski, who owned and operated an inn in Cape May for ten years, believes the taking down of the flag harkens back to a time of segregated beaches, and bars that turned away homosexuals. “Even,” he says, “the smallest and most subtle expressions of dislike for those who are different – race, religion, sexuality – are the seeds that become a cancer of hate in our world.” Andrew Altman, who has enjoyed an Out & About gathering in the past, adds that “we’ve come a long way since the day of clandestine dark bars full of closeted men and women,” but that this incident feels like nothing short of a “step backward.” Along with his partner of 21 years, he envisions a world for his son that is “better than this.” And most of these opinions were not formed solely because Panamarenko took the flag down; it was the way she justified her decision after the fact that became the driving force behind much of the outcry. When Ann McCabe approached the
responsible parties for an explanation of why the flag was removed, Panamarenko’s mother told her that such a symbol is “bad for business.” It is insulting, McCabe says, “to think that what we consider a proud symbol of our community is ‘bad for business.’” Panamarenko concedes that this language “may have been inappropriate,” adding, though, that she would never throw her mother “under the bus.” She also explains that Higher Grounds did, in fact, lose business this night, potentially because of the flag; a couple decided to dine elsewhere only moments after noticing it. “I feel like they were uncomfortable,” she says, “and this is supposed to be a comfortable space. It made me realize that there are all kinds of people with opinions and politics and we need to respect them all. I can’t side with anyone because I need everyone’s business. Every person has a right to his or her own belief system. To me, frankly, that is equal rights. All I want to know is what kind of milk you want in your coffee.” She also believes that further business may have been lost if people, upon seeing the flag, assumed Higher Grounds was hosting a private event, open only to a single group, which was not the case.

From Page 36 One member of the West Cape May community, who prefers to remain anonymous, believes that Panamarenko’s decision was motivated by financial necessity, not homophobia. “In today’s economically uncertain world,” she says, “where factions are divided and a line in the sand is more like a line in concrete, I’ve noticed an escalation in quickly passing judgment on all sides. Frankly, when I have seen the rainbow symbol outside Higher Grounds, I thought it was a private party or meeting going on inside, and decided to just come back another time.” Others, she says, might have done the same, “not because they did not want to mingle with members of the gay community, but because they did not want to interfere.” A local business owner came to Panamarenko’s defense as well, saying, “There is no other restaurant in town with as much heart as Higher Grounds. Katie would never discriminate against any group of people.” But financial necessity, Out & About members say, cannot excuse the words Panamarenko chose while defending her position this night, including, “I don’t care what you do in your personal life,”
This flag is posted on the Facebook page of We’re Out & About & Proud, where emotions run high and “I never put anything bad in your food, or charged you any higher prices.” The discriminatory implication of the latter statement, some believe, is that Panamarenko believes she could have done so, and been justified. Panamarenko denies that accusation. “This wasn’t code for anything,” she says. “These were just examples of what does constitute discrimination, examples of things that would have warranted taking offense. But to ask that my storefront be kept plain? That’s just so that everyone feels welcome.”
While Panamarenko says it “saddens” her to have offended members of Out & About & Proud (“People I really care about are members of that group,” she says), she doesn’t believe the fire she’s now come under is warranted. Several Facebook users have posted comments on the Higher Grounds and Out & About pages campaigning for a boycott of what they’re now calling “Lower Grounds.” “It’s being posted that I ‘hate’ all gay people,” Panamarenko says. “If anything, I am too loving. I have loved everyone too much, too far for the past three years. And I’ll never refrain from that.” According to McCabe, a boycott was never an organized campaign of Out & About. “I didn’t make the news,” she says, “I just reported it.” As the back-and-forth continues – online, in the streets, and to the dismay of many – at least one organization has offered assistance in the form of education. GABLES, “the gay group doing good things for the entire community,” represents the Southern Shore region of New Jersey. Though the event at Higher Grounds was not a GABLES event, President Craig Van Baal says his organization is “willing to educate whenever someone has a problem.” GABLES, he says, has “worked for 16 years to show that Cape May is a tolerant and progressive city.”

The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone
HEN I wait tables, I assume I am having the most painful experience in the restaurant. I’m the one on my feet, dealing with mean customers and cranky kitchen staff. Customers, on the other hand, are the ones giving orders and dropping 20 bucks on a salad like it’s no big deal; what could they possibly have to be upset about? That’s what I assumed until last week, when I experienced a wake-up call. Sometimes, I realized, being on the other side of the table is equally difficult. It all started when my dear friend Dawn skipped town for a vacation in California. The night before she left, I stopped by the restaurant she owns to say goodbye. I only meant to pop in for a moment, but because Dawn was busy, she asked me to stay for a while. “Why don’t you join them?” she asked, pointing to the corner table. Seated there was Dawn’s family – her father, mother and mother-in-law. I’d met them all before and I know they’re lovely people, so I told Dawn I’d be happy to join her family for
dinner. Then I got to the table. Dawn’s mother-in-law, Esmeralda, speaks only Spanish. None of us can understand her, but this never keeps Esmeralda from talking to us – uber-excitedly and continuously – about who-knows-what. Then there’s Dawn’s 70-something father, Frank, who is hard-of-hearing. Frank often winks at me (four rapid-fire winks in a row) to let me know that, though totally out of the loop, he’s still “with it.” And then there’s Dawn’s mother, Gwen, who, having just been sick, has lost her voice. This was our party: can’t hear, can’t speak, can’t speak English, and can’t figure out a way to get the heck out of here.
Nearly every conversation went something like this: Waitress: “Would you care for dessert?” Frank (winking): “What?” Esmeralda: “Deseo un café, pero ningún postre, a menos que tenga pastel de manzana.” Me: “Does anyone know what that means?” Frank (winking): “What?” Gwen: Whispers unintelligibly. Me, Frank, Esmeralda, and Waitress: “What?” By the time the meal ended, we were all exhausted, waitress and customers alike. So I admit it; sometimes, the customer has it worse than the server. But that’s true outside the restaurant, too; the folks we think have nothing to complain about are often dealing with problems we aren’t privy to, sometimes something bigger than we could imagine. All we can do is reserve judgment and be a little nicer to one another. Because really, when it comes to the strangers who cross our paths, we’re all just as out of the loop as Frank.

And its supporters are rallying to make sure the tradition stays alive. According to the Cape May Chamber of Commerce, “Jazz Fest has been cancelled, but the spirit is not! Cabanas and Martini Beach want to help by keeping the spirit alive and have joined forces with the Cape May Jazz Festival to host a fundraiser in support of the festival.” The weekend-long showcase will feature some of Cape May’s best local entertainment. On Friday night, Geno White plays Martini Beach at 6pm and Tom Larsen Band plays Cabanas at 9:30pm. On Saturday, Frank Bey takes the stage at 1pm at Cabanas, Eddie Morgan at Martini Beach at 6pm, and BlueBone at Cabanas at 9:30pm. Tickets are just $10 for Friday night and Saturday
daytime and $15 for Saturday night. And it all benefits Friends of Cape May Jazz. You can order tickets online at shopcabanasonthebeach.com. And for the benefit of another great cause, namely Animal Outreach, George Mesterhazy and friends will play at the Merion Inn on Sunday, November 27. The fourth annual jazz brunch will feature a hot buffet and cool jazz, and tickets are $40. Tickets can be purchased at aocmc. org. Animal Outreach announced recently that the USDA Office of Rural Development will be providing a low-interest loan/grant combination package so the organization
can build a no-kill animal shelter and sanctuary at its property on Bayshore Road in North Cape May. This marks a milestone in the organization’s long-standing quest to build such a facility for the homeless cats and dogs in the region. Architectural designs were supplied under the volunteer efforts of James Livoti, AIA, a committed animal lover from Bridgeton, New Jersey. “Every one of the volunteer leaders is committed to the cause of helping cats and dogs in need,” says Livoti, “and I’m just honored to be part of the mission.” Livoti adds that the group is also being helped by Opalek Engineering, LLC, of Somerdale, New Jersey. So not only is jazz still alive in Cape May, but it is coming to the rescue of some very important non-profits in town. It’s great to see so many of our local artists choosing to lend a hand. Maybe that’s why we win so many awards and are viewed by the entire state and beyond as such a gem. Make sure to attend one of these performances and support these musicians and their causes.

Our eyes met across a crowded room, we danced the night away, talked until 4am, and sparks were flying all over the place. Two problems: one – she lives in Florida and I live in Cape May; and two – she kind of has a boyfriend. She told me they’re essentially over, but still, I got an email from her last night and feel guilty about answering it. I would never ask her to move here, and I don’t see myself moving there. Are we doomed? – Smitten Dear Smitten My goodness, gentle reader – that must have been quite the evening if you’re already thinking about relocating. Distance can be a pesky obstacle to true love, though not necessarily an insurmountable one. Forget not,
dear, that it’s easy to have an enchanted evening with a fascinating stranger in a far-away land – after all, that is the stuff of fairy tales. Not all of it holds up in the more difficult and mundane light of day, however; some of our life experiences are meant to be lovely memories and nothing more. On the other hand, it’s entirely possible that the object of your affection’s (or “OOYA”’s) relationship with her beau HAS run its course, and that you are destined to be the Romeo to her Juliet – with a happier ending, one hopes. Keep to the
high road here, and also be completely honest with her. Respond to her email, telling her that you think she’s just swell, and that you would love to pursue a relationship with her if and when she is free to do so. Then, go on with your life, hope for the best, and stockpile your frequent-flyer miles. It’s easy for the Answer Lady to say it, but anything can happen. Sometimes we simply have to let it. ndecision – that moment of hesitation while you decide your course of action – gets you every time. If you’ve rounded first base, and stutter step while you think about heading to second, chances are you’ll get thrown out. The St Louis Cardinals’ postseason run (sorry, Phillies fans, but let it go) had me thinking back to a moment of indecision more than a decade ago. Returning from a trip, I was sitting at the gate in St Louis’ airport. Been there dozens of times, nothing different about this one, except for the woman who sat down beside me. The long, lean, dramatically pneumatic, slightly frazzled woman. A conversation began – is this the right gate? My flight was delayed, I’ve been traveling since 4am. Soon she let loose with a nuclear bombshell. She was, she confided, headed home from a trip to LA for her Penthouse photo shoot. Outwardly, I remained calm. Inwardly, circuits blew, my eyes fought to stay on hers, and the voices in my head began speaking in tongues. At another gate about 100 feet away,
a burly red-headed guy approached the jetway. Hmmmm, thought the sportsoriented part of my brain, that looks like Mark McGwire. (It was the year the Cardinals superstar set the home run record, before admitting to using performance enhancing drugs.) But my attention was drawn back to Miss August, who was getting quite friendly with me. I was pretty sure that at some point, phone numbers were going to be exchanged, at the

very least. And then I looked back, and realized, damn, that IS Mark McGwire. One of the greatest power hitters in baseball history. Standing right there. I should go get an autograph. In short, I hesitated. Presented with two choices – both good, but choices nonetheless – I was unable to make either. Miss August sensed my momentary lack of interest, and her elevated hemline and depressed neckline flounced off to the bathroom. To my left, 100 other people recognized McGwire and swarmed him, forcing him down the jetway to his plane. I pulled a paperback out of my carry-on, lowered my head, and metaphorically, trotted slowly back to the dugout. Let’s look at a menu and make some choices. Senior cheerleading captain Morgan Robinson, LCMR’s student of the week, is a leader who is looked up to by many younger students at LCMR. Her parents, Tony and Barbara of Erma, are very supportive of all of Robinson’s extracurricular activities. Robinson is a member of the Peer Leader program, while juggling the rigors of the Advanced Placement curriculum. She has also been dancing since she was two years old, which is how she got interested in cheerleading. Her mother, Barbara, suggested cheerleading, and Robinson said, “It looked fun,” so she tried it. As difficult as it is to balance school with all of her activities (“It gets tough,” Robinson says), she still manages to maintain a grade point average high enough for her to be a National Honor Society member. Robinson hopes to go to either West Chester or Rider University, where she plans to major in Special Education. Her exceptional leadership skills will make it easy for her to be a teacher in the future. Why You Need To See RED
We chat with Roy Steinberg on the new Cape May Stage play about Mark Rothko... by Kate Chadwick
R
oy Steinberg has one of those faces. You know you’ve seen it, and from exactly where is right on the tip of your tongue. Whether you’re a Cape May native or visitor, whether it's print ads or commercials for Cape May Stage on the local television station, it’s “Hey, I know that guy.” Which is why it was so disconcerting for this reporter to walk right past him without a hint of recognition at Depot Market recently. The facial hair and top of his head shaved and the remainder dyed red caused my double-take. He told me that it was for the role of artist Mark Rothko in Cape MayStage’s new production of RED, co-starring RJ Barnett and directed by Chris Dolman. We chatted with Roy about this rare opportunity for him to step away from his role as Artistic Director and revisit his acting roots. We hear it was quite a coup for Cape May Stage to get this play. Tell us how that came about. The actress Lynn Cohen, who has performed here at Cape May Stage, called me from London to tell me about it two years ago, saying “You must do this play.” When I told her I’d definitely look into directing it, she said “No, you have to act in it.” When the play came to the US, I went to see it on Broadway, and I was blown away not only by the production, but by the text. It addresses issues not only relating to art, it addresses what it means to be human, to be civilized.
Roy Steinberg channels tortured artist Mark Rothko in RED Aleksey Moryakov For instance, it’s interesting to me that a movie like Dumb and Dumber can really only be successful in the United States. Americans seem to have almost an embarrassment about intellect, about bettering, educating, and civilizing ourselves. Rothko challenges his assistant, who is the only other character, to rise up and learn about everything he can in order to produce great art, and I think that’s so important, too. I applied for rights to the play as soon as they became available. We kept calling and calling, pressing and pressing. The rights became available on October 25, and we opened on the 26th. You say you were particularly drawn to the text of the play – can you expand on that a bit? I think the playwright, John Logan, is absolutely brilliant. He took an actual person, and an actual event, and in large part, used Rothko’s own words to bring the play to life. He also brings everything full circle – some of the things set up early on in the play are resolved by the end. [Reporter’s note: Roy then offers an example, but we don’t want to give anything away here.] How would you rate this past year at Cape May Stage? We have had a wonderful season this year, and of course we are looking forward to our holiday production of This Wonderful Life by Steve Murray. [Reporter’s note: we have seen this particular production at Cape May Stage, and if you haven’t,
you should definitely make reservations to do so. It’s really, well – wonderful.] We strive to offer a large umbrella of productions to appeal to as many segments of the audience as we can. A great example is our production earlier this summer of Steel Magnolias, which is such a popular and accessible play, and which featured both Tony and Emmy awardwinning actresses. We were sold out every night. Then we balance that with the more challenging productions like the recent The Woolgatherer, and last year’s Top Dog/Underdog, which was definitely a more controversial offering. What’s on the agenda for next season? I’m considering a play called Time Stands Still, by Donald Marguiles. It was nominated for two Tony Awards, including a Best Actress nod for Laura Linney, and I certainly have an eye towards getting an award-winning actress to come to Cape May with it. It’s amazing that in a town the size of Cape May, we have access to such great theater. What is your take on that? It’s enormously gratifying to me. At the same time, the reason it’s possible is because we have a community of generous and open-minded people who support what we’re doing. I took the role of Mark Rothko to challenge myself. And I feel it’s equally as important for Cape May Stage and for me to continuously challenge myself with the productions we offer.

The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
ow I hate the phrase, “The Game’s Afoot,” my friends! And to think that my own career as a top detective was the inspiration for that Sherlock Holmes, as well. It all came about when I was investigating the curious case I called "The Not A Yorkshire Terrier of the Baskervilles" here in Cape May. We had had a rash of brutal murders that mystified the local constabulary, where victims were viciously dismembered and body parts strewn around a large area. Every attack took place after dark, when the fog rolled off the Atlantic. The only clues were some animal hairs that one victim had clutched in a dead hand, and reports of spine-tingling growling right before the screaming started. A state-ofthe-art laboratory on Stimpson Lane analyzed the hairs and said they came from a small terrier. Not unlike, the scientist said to me, peering over his glasses at The Young Albert of the Day, that fine little animal you have there. I laughed, and Albert chuffed in his throat, which is the canine equiva-
lent, or sometimes meant he was sad or maybe constipated: I could never be sure which. By coincidence, that analyst was the next victim, as he walked home by gaslight that evening. I received a telegram at the Mansion and when I told Albert as soon as he returned from his evening constitutional, he was most upset and chuffed for a goodly half hour until a furball popped out that contained a Yale class ring. Very odd. Well, my old friend Arthur Conan Doyle came down for the weekend, as he planned
to write a new series of books, he said, on me solving this most awful of crime sprees, and as we sat sipping a malt in the Brown Room, with the clues laid out in front of us, we thought we were getting somewhere, though that little rogue Albert, bless him, so wanted to play that he kept on messing up the evidence trails as we neared a conclusion. That’s Yorkies for you: nothing in their heads save playing. Anyways, Albert went off to chase a mouse and minutes later there was an earsplitting shriek outside. We dashed out into the fog, pistols drawn, and I stumbled over something that turned out to be a croquet hoop. “The Game!” I yelled, and, spotting a body part, added “A foot!” and ran off to chase the culprit. Sadly, the beast was gone, and I encountered only Albert, who had heard the noise and was himself hunting for a scent. He had tripped and fallen into the swimming pool, in his haste to help, and was sopping wet. For some reason Doyle was unimpressed and left in haste and fear. And he renamed me, I am furious to report, for his damnable books.

Activity Of The Week

on’t let a chill in the air keep you indoors. Fall is a great time to put a little spring in your step with some outdoor exercise, and the Cape May County Park and Zoo is just the place to do it. If you’re not crazy about exercise, the zoo is a great distraction. It’s one of Cape May’s most popular children’s attractions, but you definitely don’t have to be a child to enjoy it. There are more than 500 animals to see, many of whom are more active in cooler weather – maybe you’ll finally get a good look at the bears. An ever-changing population means there is always something new. For example, the zoo is currently planning a new habitat for its growing snow leopard family. Baby Nubo – Tibetan for "younger brother" – joined twins Kaba and Sabu on May 12, 2011. Stop by and say, “Awww.” The zoo also organizes special events. On Saturday, December 11, Santa’s Family Workshop will set up inside the reptile house from 11am-2pm. Stop at the craft and activity stations, and be sure to bring your camera with you to get a picture with Santa and Mrs Claus.
Outside the zoo, chipmunks and squirrels will keep you entertained as you stroll along the trails of the park. Or, if walking isn’t enough for you, get a full-body workout with the 12 outdoor fitness stations. They are grouped together and located near the playground, so you can keep an eye on the kids while they play. When you’re through,

CCORDING to The New York Times, RED will be the most performed play in the United States in 2011. As one of the first in our region to produce this brilliant and powerful work, Cape May Stage continues to be at the forefront of American theatres. Artistic Director Roy Steinberg makes his Cape May Stage acting debut playing Mark Rothko. He joins RJ Barnett as Ken in what many are saying is one of the best plays the theatre has ever done. Chris Dolman returns as a guest director after his triumph with Doubt in seasons past. Cape May Stage, with support from Sturdy Savings Bank, has scheduled many special upcoming performances of RED. A special ASL performance is scheduled for Friday, November 4, so that our deaf community can experience this Tony award-winning play. Many people requested matinées at this time of year and Cape May Stage responded with matinees on both Saturdays and Sundays. On Sunday, November 5, the theatre has scheduled a “PayWhat-You-Can” matinée at 3pm. Patrons pay whatever they wish at these performances. The following Saturday, November 12, will be a halfprice senior matinée. After the Sunday matinée on November 13, in conjunction with RED, Cape May Stage will present Role of the Artist, a post-show discussion featuring a panel of art professionals. ou are a new birder and you are confused. Well, get in line. You are confused because you decided to try bird watching. You thought it would be fun and stress relieving. And you knew that you needed to buy binoculars and a field guide. And now you are totally stressed and in a total funk because you had no idea there were so many binoculars and so many field guides and so many promises and so little assistance. The problem is simple. You went online for your answers. All you got was conf licting promises. Try this. Go talk to a person. Someone who has your interests in mind and knows the answers to your questions. Try going to the Cape May Bird Observatory and talking to someone in the store. They have the answers. They have the product. In fact, the only product they have is stuff they would use themselves. They’ve already assessed the merit
and promises of all the binoculars and field guides out there. Chosen the best. Put them in a collection for easy comparison. They guide you to a good selection based upon your level of interest, experience, physical needs, and (of course) your budget. Heck. Anyone can sell someone

Like your binoculars, you and your field guide become a team. The more familiar you become with it, the easier and easier it is to use. But to be a great team, you need to start with binoculars and a field guide that fit you. What about a spotting scope? Don’t all serious birders have spotting scopes and tripods? Nah. Save your money. Worry about the spotting scope and tripod later. Binoculars are the primary tool of birding. You’ll need a spotting scope about the time you start buying specialty bird guides (like Hawks at a Distance, or The Shorebird Guide). Of course, the CMBO has a great selection of spotting scopes, tripods and specialty field guides (not to mention just about anything else you might want or need to enjoy the natural world). But you are a new birder, and loading up new birders with stuff they don’t need is just going to frustrate them.
A beginning birder should start out with the perfect pair of binoculars This is how new birders stop being new birders. They become ex-birders. And that’s not going to help anyone. So take my advice. Go to the CMBO. Ask the people who understand your needs to fill your needs. It’s not their job. It’s their mission. And besides, they know you are going to be so happy with your binoculars and field guide you’ll just come back in a year and buy the spotting scope. But by that

9/26: Second Annual Dona Wise-Kelleher Cut-A-Thon At The Cuttin’ Edge

Four years ago, 37-year-old Donna WiseKelleher, a cosmetology teacher, hairstylist and beauty salon owner, passed away from a brain aneurysm. She left behind a husband and three beautiful children – Hannah, Sophia, and Chris – who are now 11, 9 and 18, respectively. On September 26, The Cuttin' Edge Hair Salon hosted the second annual Dona Wise-Kelleher Cut-A-Thon event. In three hours, just two stylists managed to do 30 cuts, each costing just $10. All proceeds were donated to the Donna Wise-Kelleher Memorial Scholarship Fund, which benefits a student in the adult cosmetology class at the Cape May County Technical School. lle is a successful yoga teacher. She owns her own business. She has a body women 20 years younger envy. She has loyal friends. She has a loyal dog. She has a lovely Cape May home, a loving sister, and three nieces who adore her to pieces. And from what I can tell, Elle has a beautiful personality. But Elle does not have a man. She's a 42-year-old single woman, and in Elle's mind, this one detail invalidates everything else. As human beings, we seek validation. In an ideal world, it would come from our accomplishments, our kindness, our intellect, our compassion, and the strength of our friendships. But let's be real. It also comes from the hottie at the end of the bar who buys us a drink. And when some hottie decides three months later that he's had his fill of us, we manage to feel less valid. We wonder what's wrong with us. We beat ourselves up for not being funny enough, or interesting enough, or pretty enough. We could win a Nobel prize, cure the common cold, or find a Beach Avenue parking spot on Fourth of July weekend, but if no one is trying to take off our pants, we can't
seem to enjoy our successes. I am a person who, as much as I hate to admit it, has sought validation from other people. So much as hearing the name of my ex makes me feel instantly deflated, wondering what it is that I did wrong or how I could have been better. Running into his new girlfriend, on the other hand, has the opposite effect. The last time I saw her, she was wearing a bedazzled top and saying something to the effect of: "This party is totes lame." Somehow,

just knowing that my ex is now saddled with the kind of girl who says "totes" made me feel more validated. Of course, this is silly. This girl has nothing to do with me. But validation is a funny thing. For being so important, it often comes from laughably unimportant places. It doesn't matter how lousy we're feeling about ourselves, if we run into that bastard ex of ours and the 40 pounds he's gained since the break up, we feel instantly better. If we run into the bastard ex who managed to land an underwear modeling contract post break up, we feel instantly worse. Never mind what we've achieved since the demise of our last relationship. I realize that my validation should come from within, from the things that make me, me. Just like Elle's validation should come from her many attributes, not the least of which being that she is a damn good person. The truth is, I think that if we depend on someone else to determine our worth, we don't have much business being in a relationship at all. And that's a thought, I'm beginning to see, that's "totes" valid.
