The Police Blotter
DURANGO, CO: A man was stopped for failure to use his turn signal and police quickly discovered he was drunk but allowed him to use the bathroom before taking his breathalyzer. In the bathroom the man proceeded to fill his mouth with his own excrement.
Classic Quotations
A Story From The Past All the real things in Russia are done in the villages. -Ernest Poole At the time of the Revolution, dogs howled day and night all over Russia. -Andrei Platonov For us in Russia communism is a dead dog. For many people in the West, it is still a living lion. -Alexander Solzehnitsyn I guess the real reason that my wife and I had children is the same reason that Napoleon had for invading Russia: it seemed like a good idea at the time. -Bill Cosby I took a speed-reading course and read War and Peace in twenty minutes. It involves Russia -Woody Allen The secret of politics? Make a good treaty with Russia. -Otto von Bismarck
“Among the different places of resort for health and recreation during the summer season, there is none that offers more inducements than Cape May. The shore is generally admitted to be safer than any now used for bathing and other advantages peculiar to this place may be enumerated… The principal establishment kept by Mr Hughes is known by the name of the “Big House,” and is one of the largest houses of the kind in the United States.” – The Baltimore Patriot, August 11, 1828
Facebook Mystery Contest
Weird Word Of The Week
Spacibo Okay, so it’s not exactly weird but this word (pronounce spah-see-ba) is a good word to learn. That way when Cape May is once again inundated with hardworking Russian students this summer, you will know how to say ‘thank you’ to them.
Don Pocher
KNOW your way around Cape May? Think of yourself as the observant type? Feast your eyes on the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Dan Mathers. If you think you know what ornate bar you are looking at, then you have a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter – follow the instructions carefully. And, don’t worry if you have never used Facebook before – it’s easy! Just ask your six-year-old nephew. To enter, look for the mystery photo at www.facebook.com/ exitzeropublishing. Good luck!
Random Fact Of The Week
DAYLIGHT saving time was instituted in Russia in 1917 but was abandoned by the newly formed Soviet government five months later. It was reintroduced in 1981 and continued after the fall of the USSR. It was abandoned again this year.
Fortune Cookie Of The Week J People who are late are often happier than those who have to wait for them. J ONCE a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with a wonderful assortment of sushi. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editors
Y
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright and Jon Roth
OU may have noticed that traffic lights are being erected on Beach Avenue, at Pittsburgh and Broadway. The reasoning, says county engineer Dale Foster, is to signal to people that major intersections are approaching – both junctions take drivers on to the two main routes out of town. Foster says there are a lot of illegal U-turns being performed on Beach Avenue, when people fail to notice the signage at these intersections. The lights will be f lashing between red and yellow – this means as you are driving on Beach, you will have to stop before turning right on to Broadway, or left on to Pittsburgh. Speaking of illegal turns, I have never felt comfortable turning left into Lucky Bones. This is probably because it isn’t actually legal, since there’s a double yellow line right there. But I’ve always done it. Then, last week, as I headed there with Aleksey Moryakov to sit in my favorite booth by the bar to drink Hoegaarden and eat ribs, Aleksey hung a right and took the LEGAL U-turn, past Utsch’s Marina, under the bridge, and past Sea Gear. I was surprised, especially given that Aleksey is not the most careful driver with whom I’ve ridden shotgun. And it got me thinking – how many of you actually do that, and how many of your brazenly break the law? Now, the last thing I want to do is stir up trouble for Lucky Bones, especially because: 1. I love the restaurant; 2. I love the Craig family, who own it; 3. I love the fact that the Craig family spend a ton of money advertising with our various publications. But… after watching Reckless Aleks take the long way around, I’m a convert.
Why risk an accident, or a ticket? (Though I would like to think that Lower Township PD have better things to do than sit at Schellinger’s Landing, looking for errant drivers.) I asked David Craig, who runs Lucky Bones, what he does. “I take what I like to call the scenic route, under the bridge. And I would recommend all of our customers do that, even though people have been making left turns into that parking lot for decades.” To wrap up the roads theme, it’s a good thing that the city council are introducing two-way driving on Elmira Street – it can only ease the congestion that builds up on the side streets leading onto Lafayette. Staying on city business, I was excited to hear the enthusiasm that greeted the new city council column we published last week (though I’d like to blow a big, fat raspberry to the fellow who complained about it on our website). In the column we mentioned that Arthur Henry, a construction company from Egg Harbor Township, were going to be hammering in the pilings for convention hall. This elicited a worrying email from one of our readers:
“Good to read the city council minutes and learn that Arthur Henry is busy working on the convention hall. That explains why in November they suddenly left my street. So Cape May gets a convention hall, and I get my sixth year of living on a half-finished road. Some of the work that Henry did in October is already collapsing, they left a half dozen orange barrels (and other trash) in my driveway, and since there’s no telling when they’ll finish the job. Hope Cape May has better luck with them.” So do I! WE got distressing news from the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities: the Designer Show House will not be going ahead at the Southern Mansion. Chief Outreach Officer for MAC Mary Stewart said, “It was the complexity of the project” that made it impossible. When asked whether MAC has plans to choose a new show house, Mary said, “We’re still considering all the options. It’s all a matter of location, location, location.” AND now a quick plug for the fourth annual Singer Songwriter Cape May, on March 25-27. Phil Broder, who’s a DJ on WCFA-LP and who previews the festival for us, says: “Did anyone else notice that festival organizer John Harris has quietly booked Lucy Kaplansky for the first night of SS Cape May in March? She’s huge! Like, headlining at major folk music festivals, huge. Like, people will come from great distances to hear her, huge.” This is exciting news. I’m glad to hear that they’ve signed an excellent artist to headline, even though, ignoramus that I am, I haven’t actually heard of Lucy. FINALLY, is Charlie Sheen actually insane, or is he just having a much better time than the rest of us?

MANDARIN SALMON AWARD-WINNING WINE LIST
Name: Mikhail Zlyden Workplace: The Ebbitt Room. I’m a food runner there. I’ve also helped prep for breakfast and worked the front desk a few times. Age: Twenty-four. Hometown: Omsk, in Western Siberia. How long have you worked here: About one year. Best thing about the job? The great people, and just the atmosphere of the place. I would never work in a restaurant in Russia, but working at a fine-dining place in America is such a great experience. What do you recommend here? For a fish dish, it would be the Pan-Roasted Branzino. Otherwise I would go with the Grilled Beef Tenderloin. What’s your OTHER dream job? I would be a top manager in the oil production field. Favorite thing about Cape May: It’s quiet, and the ocean and the general environment are so beautiful. We just had a baby boy, Egor, on November 3, and we thought about going back home, but decided to stay here because it’s such a good place to raise a child. Interview by Kate Chadwick

EVERY week our photographer Danielle O’Neal roams the streets of Cape May on a mission... to give away a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. But it’s not quite THAT easy – first, the lucky recipient has to answer three questions related to our theme issue, which this week is all about Russia. This week’s winner is Pattie Patterson, 57, from Ridley Park, Pennsylvania. We found Pattie and her companion on the Washington Street Mall. Here her answers to our piercing questions: Who’s the president of Russia? Kruschev (Actual president: Medvedev) In Russian, which four letters stand for USSR? CCKV (Actually: CCCP) Where are you rush’n to next? To buy our seasonal beach tags!

Tribute: James Devaney
B
Exit Zero celebrates the life of a local who has passed on
ORN in a thatched roof house in Lisbrogan, County Mayo, Ireland, James Devaney was one of nine children. Diagnosed with severe childhood asthma at two, he was not expected to live through the year. He passed away in Cape May last month at age 91, having lived a life full of adventure, hard work and devotion to family. He left behind his many stories. There’s the story of young Jim and a friend witnessing the routine sight of a neighbor arriving home in his wagon from the local pub after too much to drink. Once the man entered his cottage, Jim and his friend dismantled the wagon, moved both donkey and wagon inside, and rebuilt the wagon. It was never learned how the man got his donkey and wagon back outside, but it was said he never drank again. Jim took the Pioneer pledge at age 12, a religious custom in Ireland where young people vow not to take drugs or alcohol,

and receive a pin to wear until they partake. Jim wore the pin proudly his entire life. He would often ask for Adam’s Ale at restaurants, only to have to explain to the server that it was water he was requesting. Jim entered the boxing ring when he was 15 years old. He ensured his matches were not held in Lisbrogan so his mother would not know of this endeavor. He became a well-respected lightweight boxer, and his mother often said “Look, Jim, there’s a young man fighting who has the same name as you.” He never told her. He moved to England at 18 and was in London by 1940. He stayed through the bombings during World War II, living in an unheated house while working to rebuild structures that had been destroyed by the bombs. He told tales of assisting people to shelters when the sirens blared, and was especially fond of the story of a young mother with her baby in a pram. The guard would not permit her to bring the pram
into the shelter. Jim gave the guard a quick punch, and the pram was permitted. After the war, Jim stayed on in London working as announcer and bouncer at a local dance hall. It was there he met Maggie Casey, nicknamed “The Doll,” and a love story began that crossed the ocean to America, traveled through seven states and raised three children. Jim worked for Combustion Engineering, starting as a boilermaker. He told stories of falling from scaffolding, but always managed to catch himself on a wire or other object to break his fall. In retelling the tales, the other men were fond of saying “Maggie was almost a widow that day.” Soon he was promoted to site manager and was able to balance the views of workers with expectations of management, resulting in decent working conditions and jobs done on time and under budget. A close second to his love of family was his love of building. He built additions, garages, and

Tribute ? From Page 34 remodeled kitchens, but his biggest project was a two-story house he built himself in West Wildwood during the early 70s. He would drive six hours from Pittsburgh to his home in Mount Ephraim, load his truck with lumber and make the trip to Wildwood. He would work non-stop until Sunday evening, then return home. He laid the foundation, framed the house and put on the roof by himself. To the people who watched his progress, he was known as “Scottie” due to his brogue. The house that Jim built withstood many a storm in the years to come. Jim’s time in Cape May was spent building, fishing, and gardening. He developed a rainwater recycling system for his garden and shared both vegetables and wisdom with neighbors and friends. He was active in his church, and was a fixture at Cape May City Council meetings, where he and his Irish pals would question the city’s operations and decisions. James Devaney lost his final fight to Alzheimer’s disease in 2011. His sense of adventure, his values, and his stories will be with his family forever.

HINK your chili deserves a blue ribbon? Then don’t miss the Cape May Chili and Chowder Challenge on March 12 from 1-5pm. Hosted by the Cape May Chamber of Commerce and Congress Hall, this celebration of beans, beef and secret seasonings will leave you with a warm feeling inside – likely because you’ve just ingested some of the finest chili and chowder this town has to offer. The challenge has been a fixture in Cape May for some years, though it did not take place last year. Doreen Talley says “It hasn’t been an annual event, but we’re trying to resurrect it.” Resurrection should be no problem, given the fine food and entertainment guests will enjoy for a small $5 admission fee. The tasting is held in Congress Hall’s Grand Ballroom, and the admission fee allows you to try chili and chowder from each competitor, accompanied by the DJ stylings of Ed
Mcdonough. There will also be a cash bar available. Competitors will be grouped into two categories: Home-Style Cooking and Chef’s Dishes. Once you’ve sampled to your heart’s content, you’re invited to cast your vote for the best meal. Guest celebrity judges include “the two Dans” from NBC 40: weatherman Dan Skeldon, and Dan Carrigan, a weekend anchor. Funds raised during this event will go to Cape May food banks, so while you’re eating, you’re helping provide a good meal to someone else, too. There will also be plenty of prizes and giveaways for the cooks in attendance. In addition to bragging rights, the winners will receive trophies and a few giveaway prizes. Ready to put your chili or chowder to the test? Call Doreen Talley at 609-884-5508 to put yourself in the running and start fine tuning that recipe. The competition is bound to be fierce.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
DO adore the Russians. I do not refer to the surly young boys and girls who mope around Cape May every summer with their serious round faces, complaining in the way that only the young, beautiful and overly entitled can. And not that brutish Putin chap, with his poorly hidden homosexualiser ways (really, any chap who strips to the waist while horseback riding is fooling no one), and certainly not the communists who came before. I met Uncle Joe once and he was a scary little man. I was attending a “Patronising Friendship Across The Oceans” fundraising dinner to buy tractors and little fur hats for the Russian people. Stalin insisted I drink two bottles of vodka and when I regained consciousness in the morning, everyone else at the party had been dragged off and shot, and the official photographs had been tinkered with to show me wearing ladies’ undergarments and crimson lipstick. I think that was for blackmail purposes, but I merely shrugged
and said that while I would not have been seen dead in anything other than “Desert Rose” lippie, I did have the legs for stockings. We never spoke of it again. But those Romanovs, ah, they knew how to party. We used to ride in to the Winter Palace and party until spring. There was caviar by the bucketload, Fabergé eggs for the taking and all the ladies had splendid muffs. Of the finest mink. Of course, they were a sickly lot, and so dueling was a tricksy affair, what with the hemophilia
and all, so instead we had pillow fights. I did have a run-in with that Rasputin lad, over his resenting the fact that one of the princesses took a shine to me. We of course agreed on a duel, and the sneak stuffed his pillow with lead and knocked a front tooth right out of my head, but it was settled amicably with a handshake and then a sneaky blow to his temple with a horseshoe and a midnight trip out to a fishing hole in the ice. He was missed, but I simply blamed the help, who were summarily dispatched with a wooden mallet as an example to the lower classes. The only one who escaped was an earnest and previously amiable young cook by the name of Lenin, who vowed revenge on the lot of them. I never did return, as not long after there was some sort of social unrest, but I do have my collection of those Fabergé eggs as keepsakes, and I line them up sometimes to reminisce about the old days. Occasionally I trade one in for a small European nation, but usually I brush them gently with a muff and put them away again

Customer Service
M
The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone
OST line cooks are men – coarse, rugged, manly men. This is a job for knife-wielding cowboys who can withstand grueling hours, cramped quarters and unbearable heat. A cook’s office is a place f looded with testosterone. Behind the line, only the strong survive. After so much time in the dining room, a place where manners are as polished as silver teaspoons, a girl can’t help but feel drawn to the foul-mouthed, uncouth world of the kitchen. Here there is no such thing as a swan-shaped napkin or a $300 bottle of wine. Line cooks sip on Red Stripe and scarf leftover pieces of rare beef over a trashcan with their bare hands. These men are so thoroughly masculine, so utterly and completely full of machismo, I often find myself blushing in their presence. When the 24-year-old pastry chef sharpens his knife suggestively in my direction, something I’d normally find offensive, I start giggling like a schoolgirl. It’s not that I find this guy attractive, per se;
it’s that there’s something alluring about a man in control of sharp blades and fire. There is something sexy about the passion of these guys as well. With their scruffy facial hair and tattooed arms, they look as though they’d rather be out riding their hogs with packs of Marlboros tucked into their sleeves. Instead, they’re plating delicate tuna tiraditos with drizzles of truff le oil. Cooks are the anomalies of the fine dining world: tough, yet sensitive to the nuances of the f lavor palette, unrefined, yet not when it comes to their art. My first week on the job, I felt excited to be surrounded by all of this machismo. I’d had my fill of pretty boys – guys who frost
their tips and wax their brows and sing along to Justin Bieber. Here, finally, was a room full of tough, sweaty, bona fide men. And then I got sent to the restaurant’s storage area to retrieve espresso pods and sugar. To get to the shelf where these things are kept, I had to crawl under the stairs and through the makeshift closet where the cooks hang their jackets and checkered pants after a shift. The stench coming from these clothes, that of stale body odor and old seafood, was noxious enough to make my eyes water. I took a deep breath, grabbed my espresso pods, and ran for air. I no longer felt much like f lirting. This is when I realized that being around uber-masculine men is all well and good, as long as you’re prepared for the way these uber-masculine men are going to smell. But that’s the thing about a job; you’re never going to find one that’s all perfect, all the time. It’s kind of like expecting to find the perfect man – pretty futile. Sometimes, all a girl can do is take a deep breath and take what comes at her – the good, the bad, and the smelly.

The Answer Lady
T
Wise answers to perplexing questions
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manners of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart, and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I was recently out to dinner with my new boyfriend at our favorite local restaurant, where both the hostess who seated us and the busboy were obviously Eastern European. I was really surprised when my otherwise great guy started mocking their accents as soon as they left! I didn’t know what to say, so I didn’t say anything, but the more I think about it, the more it bothers me. Should I have said something, and if so, what? – Nice Guy’s Girl? Dear Girl The Answer Lady can understand your alarm, since it sounds as if your Prince Charming isn’t quite as charming as initially thought. The Answer Lady follows the credo that if someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they’re not nice after all. (This is why the Answer Lady didn’t marry
her first fiancé, but she digresses). Though your beau wasn’t rude to the staff’s faces, that almost makes it worse, does it not? More sinister, somehow. Handling a xenophobe whom one doesn’t know – at a party, for instance – is easier. Holding hands across the table with a bigot is a slightly trickier proposition. We can take a huge leap of faith before deciding “your boyfriend is a butthead,” and presume that he was nervous for some reason and this was his exceedingly lame attempt at humor. A
calm, succinct “I can’t believe you just said that” puts the ball in his court and the onus on him to explain himself. Dear Answer Lady My new boyfriend has a female best friend – they’ve been besties since, like, elementary school. I trust him implicitly – it’s her I’m not too sure about. For one thing, she seems to turn up wherever we go, and while she’s very nice to me in his presence, as soon as he walks away, I can feel the hostility radiating off her. I’m afraid that if I say anything to him, he’ll think I’m crazy, and that if I say anything to her, I’ll never be seen or heard from again. Am I paranoid? – His Girl Dear His If you REALLY fear that she will sprinkle some cyanide on your delicious shredded pork nachos the next time you’re dining a trois at Lucky Bones, it’s certainly worth mentioning to your boyfriend. This way if you do disappear we’ll have a primary suspect. The Answer Lady jests, of course! She is a big believer in following one’s instincts, though – don’t turn your back on this one.

LCMR senior wrestler Josh Dickinson clinched 100 career wins after defeating his 112-pound opponent from Egg Harbor Township at the District 32 championships. Dickinson credits his strong work ethic and success to his experience in wrestling because “it teaches you hard work.” He won districts two years in a row and beat a tough Delran opponent twice, a first in his high school career. The son of John and Margaret Dickinson of Erma, Dickinson started wrestling when he was five years old, but soon abandoned the sport. He began again in sixth grade and has never looked back. A versatile athlete, Dickinson started high school planning to play ice hockey instead of wrestling. Thanks to inspiration and encouragement from his older brother John, 20, a wrestler at West Chester University, Dickinson decided to continue with wrestling and follow in his brother’s footsteps. Does he plan to emulate his brother and wrestle in college? “I’m not really sure right now,” said Dickinson. For now, he plans on enjoying his history-making senior year. Activity Of The Week
H
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Crafts and Antiques in Winter
AS anyone escaped the winter blues this year? We’ve had enough snow and cold to give anyone a case of cabin fever. Luckily, the MidAtlantic Center for the Arts scheduled some therapy – Crafts and Antiques in Winter at the Cape May City Elementary School. Billed as a cure for the blues, this event offered a wide variety of vendors to fill your prescription. If you think an apple a day keeps the doctor away, then Momma’s Homemade Applesauce must be just as good. There is even a reduced sugar version – and it really does taste like apple pie. Honey has medicinal properties ranging, according to your source, from soothing cold symptoms to curing skin ulcers to healing heart disease. A daily dose is said to reduce hayfever. The Herbertsville Honey vendors weren’t promising anything more than tasty sweetness, and they delivered. Convinced that laughter is the best medicine? That’s where artist Bruce Garrabrandt came in. His “Whimsical Wildlife” collection has smiles to last for

the rest of the season, including “Al Capon,” the “Deli Llama” and “Gnuveau Riche.” In addition, the “Fine Artists” collection featuring “Cezanne/Cezoff” and “Pigcasso” sparked many a giggle. Whimsy also reigned among the jewelry vendors, whose work included pieces crafted from dominos and other found objects. Doctors have long prescribed art therapy to fight depression, and the craft sale offered beautiful things at all price

points. From starfish and crystals to oil on canvas, there were any number of ways to bring beauty to your home. You could even wrap yourself in it, with clever shawls to keep winter’s chill at bay. Then there were the antiques – beautiful items with stories to tell can be very soothing when you are trapped inside. And if you don’t know the story behind your new table or vase, go right ahead and make one up! We know that this winter has not been the worst ever. In 1886, Montana had snow for 60 days straight. The Great White Hurricane of 1888 paralyzed the eastern seaboard for over a week. But with some New Jersey school districts scheduled to make up snow days until June 29, this winter has brought the blues. Easing those blues at Crafts and Antiques in Winter was easy – Cape May City Elementary School has plenty of parking and the $1 admission included entry into the hourly door prize drawing. There is another MAC craft sale at the school on Memorial Day, so you can refill your prescription! Next week: Take a Yoga Retreat

Bird Droppings
T
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
HE biggest day of the year is almost upon us. Get your change jar to the coin counter at the bank and make sure your credit cards have tread. You are simply not going to believe the array of binoculars, spotting scopes and tripods at this year’s annual Cape May Bird Observatory Optics Sale, held on March 12 and 13 at the Center for Research and Education at 600 Route 47 North in the hamlet of Goshen. You aren’t going to believe the prices, either, but that’s immaterial. Your lack of faith is less important than actually saving a bundle on... Swarovski, Zeiss, Leica, Nikon... All the top brands. All the stuff you’ve drooled over for years. The sales table will be weighted down with factory refurbs, tradeins, f loor models, and brand new stuff that we’re getting at special discounts. Since the CMBO is one of the top optic dealers in the US, we’ve got a lot of leverage with the people who make this really hot glass. Many company reps will be on hand on March 12 to answer your questions.
But that’s not why I’m writing. It’s not like I’m making anything on this event. My objective is to give you some insider tips and tell you what you need to know to get the glass of your dreams. Tip 1 Have an idea about what you want before you walk in the door. This is not a day for window shopping. This is a time to make a bee-line for the good stuff and grab
it. Go to either CMBO store and test out optics before the sale – not the day of. Pick a make and model you like before the sale (then hope it’s in the line-up). Tip 2 Arrive early. This means before the doors open at 9am. This means Saturday. Every year those gremlins at the CMBO hide treasures with ridiculously small price tags in the array. Things like an 8x32 BN binocular for $200, or a Kowa TSN-4 Spotting Scope for, oh, $100. I’m not saying these items will be there. I’m just saying that the store staff likes to have a little fun; see if anyone is paying attention. Tip 3 See Tip 1. Don’t come in with a bunch of questions like “What is the advantage of a 8x binocular over 10x?” While you are engaging a salesman, somebody is reaching around behind you and grabbing the bargain you might have had. The time to get your questions answered is BEFORE the sale. Sales day is for buying. Tip 4 Buy up. Nobody has ever purchased a premium binocular and regretted

Bird Droppings ? From Page 71 it. The way to be disappointed is to settle for an instrument that you are only going to replace at next year’s sale. Tip 5 Yes, trade-in binoculars are accepted, but not on the sale day. The CMBO will take trade-ins of premium binoculars and spotting scopes: Leica, Zeiss, Swarovski, and high-end Nikon. Come in before the sale. You’ll receive a credit to apply toward an instrument in the sale (or a new instrument, if you like). Tip 6 No, you cannot phone in your orders or purchase a sale item before the doors open on Saturday. This applies to staff, their blood kin, your uncle in Tasmania, Nelson Mandela, Lady GaGa, Frodo Baggins, Harry Potter (well, maybe Harry since he’s got that wand and invisibility cloak)... everybody. Tip 7 If you can’t come on Saturday, don’t despair. There is always lots of stuff left for Sunday and since the mad rush is over, salespeople will have the time to help you and answer questions. Who knows, they might even be willing to bargain a little on some items. Tip 8 Consider how much a new binocular will mean to somebody else. It’s
not just a great gift, it’s the instrument that connects people to the natural world. There will be birder-worthy instruments for under $100. Not a bad price for something that grants supernatural intimacy with the universe (not to mention birds). Tips 9 and 10 See Tip 1. And don’t be late. Doors open at 9am. Line begins before that and if it’s nice weather, the line can start just as the sun comes up; but we won’t be there giving out numbers until we’ve had our second cup of coffee. One last very important item – this is a members-only sale, meaning members of the Cape May Bird Observatory or New Jersey Audubon. Bring your current membership card for quick access. If you aren’t a member yet, you should become a member by stopping in at either CMBO center before the sale and save the time of doing it on the day of. If you have to wait to sign up, you have to wait to get inside for the bargains. The 16th Annual Optics Sale will be held at the Center for Research & Education at 600 Route 47 North in Goshen from 9am to 4:30pm on March 12 and 13. If you aren’t a member yet, head over to the Cape May Bird Observatory at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking lovely Lake Lily, in Cape May Point. The center is open 9:30am

to 4:30pm every day. Get your membership card, and take a test drive. Pick up a pair of binoculars that you can really enjoy; take them out on the deck; enjoy the fit and feel; try different makes and models. Write it down and bring it with you to the sale so you can remember what you liked and see what compares. You can also pick up the schedule of daily walks, a free birding map and checklist so you’re ready to start using those new binoculars. Need a gift for a friend or loved one but are clueless as to what they want or need? Pick up a gift card, redeemable at any of our New Jersey Audubon Centers throughout the state. And if you aren’t fortunate enough to be in the area, you can purchase your binoculars anytime from our online store www. FeatherEDGEOptics.org, and if you want to know what’s happening in the natural world, visit www.BirdCapeMay.org where birding is just a click away! Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Author of several books on and about nature, he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.

Dennis Zaitsev, Program Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews “The Rite”
OW long will Hollywood keep doing the same thing over and over again? In the The Rite, Anthony Hopkins plays one of the few priests still practicing exorcism. What is the difference between a person truly possessed and a person who is mentally unstable and faking the possession? So goes the debate among students studying at the Vatican. Hopkins is one of those students. Most of the film is set in Italy, but the plot could unfold in any small town in America. The setting does add some mystery when using Latin and dual linguistics from Italian characters who are mostly representatives of the Catholic Church or children from local villages. But if you erase all foreign factors you’d get a mix of The Sixth Sense and good old-fashioned The Exorcist. The storyline is executed reasonably well with a few catchy spots of dialogue and music that work with cinematography that exploits dark settings, remote locations, and ubiquitous candlelight. The cinematographer, Ben Davis (best known
“The Rite” delivers plenty of moody atmosphere, but sometimes the plot gets lost in the shuffle. for his work on Kick-Ass) made a great transformation of what my friend described as “Italian Renaissance art to film.” The dark tones are contrasted with illuminated faces in chiaroscuro lighting similar to Titian or Caravaggio. With all of that said, the plot does weave

away from subject a lot. The special effects, sometimes perfect for the mood and moment, were also sometimes overwhelming and distracting. Hopkins was… good. His face was the perfect playground for puffed veins, black skin, and pupil-less eyes (not trying to give away too much of the plot here). Still, sometimes the special effects of mystic energies became too extreme. The final moments of the film seem to indicate that the producers are hoping for a sequel. I think the lackluster acceptance of this film (both in reviews and by the empty theater that I saw it in) will prevent this. And really do we need this next step? Exorcisms require faith. We got the idea. All that said, I’d give the film 3 out of 5 stars. I know, this column doesn’t usually use stars, but I’m a creature of habit. Thanks to all who came out to the PreOscar Party last weekend at the Mad Batter. We’ll have the results of our Oscar tally in an upcoming edition of this column. And if you have a review of a film that you’d like to share with the movie column, write us at capemayfilm@hotmail.com.

The Dating Column
M
Stella Dixon’s take on romance on old Cape Island
Y FRIEND Carla has recently started dating a guy we’ve known since we were teenagers, and she’s very much in love. This week, Carla and I sat down to a quick lunch at Lucky Bones. “Douglas did the sweetest thing today,” she told me at the table. “What did Douglas do?” I said. I tried not to sound annoyed, but Carla was on my last nerve. For the entire decade that we’d known him, Douglas had been Doug. But the moment Carla decided that she’d fallen for the guy, she decided to change his name. I don’t understand why it is that folks – women, especially – like so much to rename their significant others. Perhaps it’s a territorial thing: mountain climbers plant flags, pups pee on fire hydrants, and ladies elongate names. As relationships progress, Mikes become Michaels, Jons become Jonathons, Jacks morph into Jackys, and Dougs, inevitably, turn into Douglases. It is curious to me that this would be a gender-specific hobby. You’ll never hear a man refer to his girlfriend as ‘Dianey’ or
‘Christiney’ or ‘Dawny.’ But, several years ago, I had a female roommate who went so far as to tack a middle name onto her man. “I’m going to have dinner,” she often told me, “with Henry James.” The 19th-century American author from our textbook? Nope, the burly hockey player from down the hall. But at least Henry James is, in fact, this person’s real-life moniker. Nicknames, on the other hand, can be far sillier – and far more generic. Another roommate of mine
used to refer to every boyfriend she ever had as “bub,” as in: “I love you, bub,” and “Be my valentine, bub,” and “Pass the ketchup, please, bub.” Of course, every time this roommate of mine spoke, I fought the urge to ask if she wouldn’t mind shutting the bub up already. But nicknames are simply a romance reality, I suppose. There have been entire songs written about sugar pies and honey bunches. If I had a dollar for every time I heard a woman call her beau “babe,” I wouldn’t depend on writing this column for extra cash. Then again, women don’t assign new names to their men only; they nickname one another, too – and often in what are supposed to be endearingly derogatory ways. It’s not unusual to hear a woman say how much she loves her bitches, or how much she’s looking forward to dancing with her favorite hoes. I don’t get it, but maybe that’s just me. Perhaps this is a nitpicky complaint. What Shakespeare said is true, after all – a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. But for the life of me, I can’t figure out why we’d ever want to call it anything else.
