Classic Quotations Cape May County Historical Museum
A Story From The Past “Researchers discovered that chocolate produces some of the same reactions in the brain as marijuana. They discovered other similarities between the two but can’t remember what they are.” Matt Lauer “All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.” Charles Schultz “My therapist told me the way to achieve true inner peace is to finish what I start. So far today, I’ve finished two bags of M&M’s and a chocolate cake. I feel better already.” Dave Barry “‘I owe it all to little chocolate donuts.” John Belushi “Forget love. I’d rather fall in chocolate.” Unknown
The year 1878 saw Cape May’s seasonal businesses flourish, with more steamship passengers disembarking at Denizot’s Decatur Street Pier than ever. The steamship Republic also began bringing visitors to Cape May. The Republic was capable of transporting 3,000 travelers in one trip. The boat offered uncommon amenities, including three passenger decks with plenty of comfortable seats, a dining room serving four-course meals and a band that played throughout the voyages. Weird Word Of The Week
THEOBROMINE – A bitter alkaloid of the cacao plant, theobromine is the primary alkaloid found in chocolate. Theobromine has physiological effects on the body, including a link to serotonin levels in the brain. The presence of theobromine renders chocolate toxic to some animals, especially dogs, cats and horses.

Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter – follow the instructions carefully. Random Fact Of The Week
Chocolate’s melting point is just below your body temperature, which is why chocolate melts in your mouth. Melting chocolate in the mouth raises the level of brain activity and the heart rate more intensely than passionate kissing, and the acceleration lasts four times longer.
Fortune Cookie Of The Week J “You have a heart of gold.” J Once a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with egg rolls. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editors
C
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
HARLOTTE Daily is eighty years old. When you’ve seen that many decades come and go, you’ve earned the right to blow off work and plop your senior butt down into a comfy chair at The Brown Room. But Charlotte Daily has no intention of slowing down. She’s worked for forty-five years to make the West Cape May Christmas Parade a success. Not because she gets her kicks from string bands parading through town, but because the event is so important to Cape Island. It’s not just a source of bragging rights for us (though it IS a spectacle worthy of a town several times our size); it’s a chance for the community to come together, to celebrate, to laugh, and to enjoy the hell out of what’s supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year. So we think it’s about time that we got our own butts into gear. If we don’t show our support for Charlotte, Mayor Pam Kaithern, and the rest of the team who’s been planning this event since last summer, there’s a chance the West Cape May Christmas Parade has hosted its last string band. Rather than showing up the day of — to enjoy the lights, the hot chocolate, and all the warm, fuzzy feelings this event brings year after year — we need to show up now. The parade costs roughly $30,000, and although it’s a fair amount of money, consider how much business this tradition generates for the local economy. (We’re looking at all you hotel and restaurant owners out there.) But 30k isn’t going to raise itself. The parade is not put on with taxpayer money, and there’s only so much the borough can do. They’ve already hosted their annual spaghetti and meatball fundraiser at the VFW (we’d like
the next generation of Cape May kids could get to experience it. It really is something special and, most importantly, it’s something positive happening in a world that’s got quite enough negativity. Speaking of positive happenings, we’d like to give a shout-out to the folks at the Animal Welfare Society, who have recently renovated their facility, located at 40 Route 47 in Dias Creek. They’ve added an Assisted Living Room for felines whose advanced age makes them less likely to be adopted, and even an Animal Food Bank, which assists families throughout the county in meeting some of the costs of feeding their pets in these harsh economic times. The Society will host an open house this weekend, November 12-13 from 1-3pm. And because we at EZ are diehard animal lovers, we’d also like to mention our good friends over at Animal Outreach, who will be hosting their 4th Annual Jazz benefit brunch the Sunday after Thanksgiving (you’ll be hungry again by then). The brunch will be held on November 27 from 10:30am1:30pm at The Merion Inn, and will feature a hot buffet and some cool jazz by George Mesterhazy and Friends. Tickets are $40 – well worth it for such a worthy cause. Lastly, the Seventh Annual Dickens Yuletide Bazaar will be held at the Presbyterian Church of Cape May on Saturday, November 19 from 8am-3pm. All manner of goodies – needlework, books, children’s toys and games, baked goods, Christmas decorations – as well as a silent auction and Holiday Entertainment Center will be included. Breakfast snacks as well as lunch will be available. For more information, please call 884-6652.
to thank all who came out to enjoy Chef Chris Hubert’s delicious food), and tonight, November 10, they’ve put together the second annual Winter Wonderland Warm-up at Congress Hall. With a silent auction, live music, festive food, and entertainment from Blue the Pig and Mrs. Claus, this is the kind of charity that won’t feel much like charity. The third fundraiser, a chicken and dumpling dinner cooked by local celebrity chefs at the West Cape May Firehall, takes place on November 20. The $20 tickets can be purchased in advance at Borough Hall, or at the door. Finally, we’ve got a donation jar on the counter here at EZ Global Headquarters, and if all of us could put in just one dollar each, we’d make one hell of a difference. We’d like to encourage fellow business proprietors here in town to pitch in any way they can, with a similar collection jar, or perhaps a dollar from the sale of a specific item donated to the cause. Charlotte Daily would really like to experience a nice round fifty years of service to the West Cape May Christmas parade, and we’d really like it if

For The Love Of Song
O
Open Mic nights at the Pilot House attracts musicians of every genre...by JM Kearns
ctober 2010. A number of restless musical souls were kicking around Cape May with unfinished business. Some of them, had been in bands at another place or time, and they’d made a good living. Jimm Ross, sea glass artist and carpenter, had used his edgy tenor playing rock in Philly. Roy Baker, dry wit and construction man, had forged a unique style in the folk clubs. Rose Kelly, healthcare administrator, had wailed her heart-stopping vocals for years in the fabled Southwind. Others hadn’t quite brought their dreams onto the stage. MQ Murphy, another house-fixer, hosted his own show on WCFA-FM, but also played tasty Telecaster on the sly and had a singer-songwriter inside him. Property manager Debra Donahue had sung in choirs for years, but wanted to take her pop diva instincts to the next level. John Nesbitt, window wizard in Court House, had created his own brand of alt-country with harmony partner Mark Chamberlain, a gym owner. Me, I’d had a band in Nashville, but that was then. The urge to play your music live is a jones that doesn’t die. It smolders inside you and might even burn up part of your soul. Unless you find it an outlet. That’s what Barry Tischler and the Pilot House did when they started the Friday night Open Mic a year ago. It was the right place for song-tormented pilgrims to find a second act, or a first one – thanks to a perfect storm of crucial factors. The owners, Frank and Deirdre Hineline, who live and breathe the event. Bartenders who care: Debbie Bove of the reassuring smile, and Dawn Ford, tambourine angel. The wait staff who cheerfully sidestep errant pickers. The PH regulars, who opened their ears and their minds. (We thank you and we love you.) And lastly, a host whose generous spirit pulls it all together: big-voiced Barry Tischler. It started slow but built steadily, as these ingredients reacted chemically. Pretty soon there was a good warm blaze, and by the summer season of 2011 you had one of the hottest hangs in Cape May. The list of performers kept growing, and although it had the surprise drop-ins of an open mic, it was really a music revue

with a constant core. There isn’t room here to mention them all, but let me salute the crazy energy of Andy Palermo and James Black, the elegant tunes of Andrew Reeves and Josh Palmer, high-school belter Zak La Torre, cover king Carl Behrens, sultry songstress Bernadette Givens-Matthews, playful crooner Tom Werkheiser, mood-painter Mikey Vengence, and country gentleman Rick McGuire. Oh, and powerhouse guitarpoet Gordon Vincent. Not to mention jazz master George Mesterhazy, who walks up Decatur and joins the jam when it’s cookin’ just right. All the people mentioned at the top have found their mojo too. The consistent element here is artists climbing out on a limb, playing for love, not money, singing a song they believe in. Classics, obscure gems, originals – we got ‘em. The first anniversary party was October 21, 2011. It was just an Open Mic, but you couldn’t get in the door. George sent his love from Istanbul.

The Movie Column
S
Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews “The Ides of March”
trange bedfellows? Absolute power? Hands off the interns? How many clichés can you pack into one political thriller? The new movie The Ides of March proves you can use all of them. Twists, turns, weaving, ducking: truly this film has it all. What made it come as close as it did to being worth the price of admission? Perhaps it was the sharp dialogue, impressive and quotable quotes. Perhaps it was a stunning supporting cast (Marisa Tomei, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti) that outshined the primary players. Clooney plays Mike Morris, Democratic candidate for president. He’s crisp, he’s savvy, he’s… well, he’s George Clooney. Certainly you couldn’t pick a more appropriate actor to play this role. Or maybe he couldn’t have picked a more appropriate actor (Clooney directed). Morris is in a heated competition over primaries in the state of Ohio. Really? Is any one state’s primary really the flashpoint that will lead to disasters that pull lives apart? And… Ohio? Morris’ campaign manager, played by Seymour Hoffman, is unsure
of the loyalty of his number one staffer, played by Ryan Gosling. Deceit, treachery, lies, betrayal. When do the clichés end? The plot turns are somewhat staged, and the “a-ha” moments don’t quite take your breath away. And believe me, I want to absolutely love everything Clooney does. He’s a brand I believe in — most times. Still, this film doesn’t quite wax poetic… or ring true (okay, so look who’s slinging clichés now?).
The two who stole the show in this film are Seymour Hoffman and Gaimatti as battling campaign managers. In fact, they didn’t steal the show – they saved it. They both have the hard-boiled look (with the big gut to match) of jaded political hacks: party pushers, if you will. So really, they’re worth the price of admission. Many are praising this film for its ensemble acting, and surely nobody flubbed in their parts — but only these two delivered on characters that were fun to watch, even though they too were stereotypes: didn’t you catch that from the “big gut, jaded hacks” comments. So the elections may have come and gone without a whole lot of fanfare. Maybe it’s me, but the commercials didn’t seem to be as fervent as they have been in off-year elections of late. So it goes with The Ides of March. We know what to expect from those commercials, from the campaigns — the tactics, the routines of elections. And as we search for true innovation in storytelling, what we get is politics as usual. Yes, I saved the best cliché for last.

10/23: Vigil For Victims Of Domestic Violence At Rotary Park Gazebo
«
In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, CARA, The Coalition Against Rape and Abuse, organized this, the fourth annual candlelight vigil at the Cape May Gazebo. The vigil, hosted in honor of both vicitms and survivors, was the third in the county last month. Here, CARA staff and their children gather for a picture. The group is comitted to providing support, housing and safety for those suffering from domestic violence. Through both education and advocacy programs, they empower adults “to achieve a peaceful resolution,” while helping “facilitate their journey to independence.” This year, CARA would like to recognize Cape May County Freeholder Gerald Thornton of Human Services, for his tireless efforts to assist in all CARA-related programs. Customer Service
S
The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone
ince I started waiting tables, I’ve always been taught that it is inappropriate to introduce oneself to a table of customers. I agree. People should care about receiving courteous and unobtrusive service; they should not care about the personal information of the server. But there are some folks who just won’t stand for anonymity. “What’s your name, dear?” they say, smiling. It’s a polite question, or so it sounds, but I can’t help but cringe when I hear it, for a number of reasons. First, people who ask my name want to know who to blame when something goes wrong. “But Molly told us we could have tuna,” they’ll say to my manager, after the kitchen runs out of their chosen entree. Give up your name, and you’re only giving up ammo. Molly took too long. Molly spilled too much. Molly, Molly, Molly. Second, customers who know my name feel justified in yelling it across the dining room, because we are, after all, on a first-name basis now. In their minds, shouting for more salt from “waitress” is rude; shouting for more salt from
“Molly” is okay, never mind that Molly is in the middle of taking an order from the very attractive, single man on table three. But the real reason I hate giving up my name to people I’ll likely never see again is that names carry connotations. People hear my name, and without knowing me, they assume I am a wholesome girl, possibly a little naive. This is fine, I suppose; it’s probably true, and there are worse labels to have. But I get sick of being pegged this way by 30 strangers on a given night. That’s why I sometimes lie. What’s my name? Ginger. That’s right, sexy, sensual Ginger. Go ahead, try to peg me as a wholesome, naive girl now.
Then again, sometimes, I’m in a Charlotte mood. Charlotte is classy, sophisticated, together. She suggests the sensible house salad, dressing on the side. Other nights, I’m Chris, the sporty, tomboy type who can hang with the guys. Chris, whose uniform blouse is always just a little wrinkled, usually recommends a no-fuss meal of meat and potatoes. On the weekends, Courtney comes to work. She’s not the brightest bulb, but she’s got shiny hair, she’s the life of the party, and no one could ever accuse her of being a bad time. When I’m annoyed, I’m Marge. I exude a don’tmess-with-me attitude. Marge gets away with rolling her eyes because people won’t challenge a girl this tough. So imagine my dismay when my boss decided to order nametags for his servers. Back to being Molly, Molly, Molly... or so I thought. But this, of course, is when I started coming to work as Mandy, the sexy, sophisticated, slightly wrinkled, slightly annoyed, good time tough girl who’s also just a little forgetful. Too forgetful, as it turns out, to remember a nametag.

Arts Editor Tom Sims reviews Cape May Stage’s “Red”
he new production from Cape May Stage, John Logan’s Tony Award-winning play Red, is all about transformations. The first and most obvious transformation is in the actor playing abstract artist Mark Rothko (the main character): you have never seen Cape May Stage Artistic Director Roy Steinberg like his. But Steinberg says dying his hair, having a close shave, and wearing period glasses was just the beginning of his quest to capture the essence of Rothko. “He stands a particular way, and he walks a particular way,” says Steinberg, who adds: “To be a painter you should be a student of poetry, anthropology, and music. To be engaged in culture, you need to understand where you are in the continuum of history. This play is about having courage, facing demons, and pushing for the truth.” The transformations continue for Rothko, as well as our own perceptions of the arts. Abstract paintings can be difficult to appreciate, as Steinberg points out, but when they are studied, given more than
Roy Steinberg channels Rothko in Cape May Stage’s current production a passing glance, they can be amazingly transformative. Rothko’s work in New York during the mid-1900s transformed the art world as well. “Before Rothko and his peers like DeKooning and Pollock, you studied the European greats,” says Steinberg. “With Rothko and his contemporaries, there was a new breed of American master that led the abstract movement.” Apart from a study of the arts, the play finds humor in one dynamic of Rothko as
a crazy boss. “Rothko does not suffer fools lightly,” says Steinberg about his character. “The play starts with his hiring of a new assistant, and it’s an insane job interview – asking him to name obscure works of art or quote Hamlet.” This play will resonate with those involved in the Cape May art scene, but you don’t have to be an artist to appreciate the humor and poignancy of Red. In conjunction with the current production, there will be a post-show discussion featuring a panel of art professionals after the Sunday matinee on November 13. Hosted by Steinberg, the panel includes Michael Cagno, Executive Director at Noyes Museum of Art, Sandra Bloodworth, director of Metropolitan Transportation Authority Arts for Transit and Urban Design in New York City, and Victor Grasso, fine artist. “Role of the Artist” is free to patrons attending the performance and will take place immediately following the 3pm matinee presentation at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse at Bank and Lafayette in downtown Cape May. The Answer Lady
T
Wise answers to perplexing questions
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady My sister has invited me for Thanksgiving, but her husband is a kosher vegetarian. Meals at their house tend to be less than satisfying (I mean, beans and whitefish for Thanksgiving?! Come on!). Is there a polite way to get out of this? – Meat & Potatoes Lover Dear Meat & Potatoes The Answer Lady understands, because for her, Thanksgiving means turkey and stuffing and mashed potatoes and gravy (although you can keep that gelatinous cranberry goo, thank you very much). Just how flexible are your sister and brother-inlaw on this? Do you know for a fact this will be your menu on November 24th? Would they totally freak out if you arrived with a 16-pound turkey dinner from the Depot Market tucked under your arm (complete with pie)? Of course, proper etiquette dic-
tates if we accept a dinner invitation, we should be prepared to eat what is put in front of us. At the same time, it mystifies the Answer Lady as to why someone with such a limited personal menu as your brother-inlaw would even invite guests over, unless he is willing to provide some variety for said guests. Whether you accept the invitation depends upon what the holiday means to you. Is it “spending quality time with loved ones,” or “turkey leftovers for a solid week”? No matter what your answer, you can kill
two birds with one stone by ordering the Depot turkey dinner for yourself, leaving it at home (thus ensuring a week’s worth of leftovers), and then turning up at your sister’s for some beans and whitefish. It’s one day out of the year – it won’t kill you. Hopefully. Dear Answer Lady I volunteered to host Thanksgiving for my family for the very first time this year and I’m now panic-stricken. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but now I just don’t think I can pull it together. Is it rude to un-invite 17 people for turkey dinner? – Freaking Out Dear Freaking Sometimes things come up which force us to change plans, but ‘freaking out’ is not a legitimate one, unfortunately. The Answer Lady would be hard-pressed to think of anyone who would not be a little undone at the prospect of 17 people coming for dinner, so just breathe, dear – what you are feeling is normal. Your family will understand that you feel pressure, so do ask for help! Everyone brings a dish, grab a cheese tray from Seaside Cheese to nosh on while the turkey roasts, and you’ll be in great shape.

Chance Meetings
I
Everett Chance wines and dines Cape May’s single ladies
t's said that you never swim in the same river twice. That doesn't apply to dating, however. It's definitely possible to experience deja vu on a date, as I did the other night while out with Mali. You'll recall when Stella Dixon and I had our now legendary dinner date. Stella is lovely and smart and funny and should be what every guy dreams of... except that we just didn't click. She was a bit young for me, and she is still a little unsettled on her path through life. (She, needless to say, thought I was boorish, ugly, and stupid – just kidding! Love you, Stella! – plus I nearly got us run over by a bus.) We also had a bit of a problem with the restaurant we chose, since it was closed when we got there, and we had to move on to another place. Deja vu all over again. Mali and I made plans for one restaurant, until she told me it was closed. After deciding on a second restaurant, she emailed the night before our date to say that the place was dark. We agreed on a third restaurant, a place with a phone message proclaiming that they're
open seven days a week, and when we arrived there wasn't a light on. Which is how we wound up at a restaurant I've been to many times, my trusty fallback, the Blue Pig Tavern. Please don't misunderstand me, the Blue Pig isn't the culinary equivalent of a "safety school." It's a worthy first choice, but it just wasn't on my list of restaurants I'd planned to review. You know I can't resist a meal with mashed potatoes, so
it was convenient that their nightly blue plate special was pot roast and mash. Comfort food! Mali went with the salmon, and we both enjoyed the food. Dessert was a flourless chocolate cake for her, creme brulee for me, a very good ending to a very pleasant evening. And don't misunderstand me, Mali is more than pleasant. She's very pretty, she has the smarts to successfully manage a pair of local businesses, and her tales of world travel and scuba diving on shipwrecks are enough to keep any man interested. But, like Stella before her, she was a little bit young for me, and still a little unsettled on her path through life. Nice, but she doesn't make my heart beat faster. Restaurants are shutting down for the season, but there's still time for dinner. Send an email to info@exitzero.us, and we'll go to dinner at one of the Cape's fine eating establishments. Afterwards I'll write all about it, a combined date and restaurant review. Your name will be changed, the restaurant's won't. Maybe we can close some place down.

Aspiring doctor Roberto Gonzalez, 18, who lives in North Cape May with his parents Roberto and Cielo, is leading a crusade against bullying at Lower Cape May Regional High School. In honor of anti-bullying month, Gonzalez has decided to join the LCMR basketball cheerleading squad with the hope of inspiring students to follow their dreams and hearts. “Pursue your dreams! People remember you for the things you do that are out of the ordinary,” said Gonzalez of his decision. Gonzalez has always been a natural born leader. His role as President of the Future Business Leaders of America club and captain of the varsity cross country team, as well as being an integral member of National Honor Society, Key Club, and Peer Leaders have helped shape him into a hometown hero of sorts. The senior will be applying to Rowan University, Rutgers University, University of Delaware, and Boston University to obtain a degree in the medical field. With his great leadership qualities, Gonzalez will surely make a huge difference in any community he chooses to be a part of in the future. story by Katie Kincade, Photo by Jason Hoban

The Cape May Crossword
None of that generic nonsense you see in other papers... a puzzle just for “Exit Zero”! By Jon Roth So YOU love crosswords? Great. The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
have no time for the Swiss, really. Ever since they shot down my bomber in WWII, I have held a grudge that no amount of exquisitely engineered cuckoo clocks, no number of Alpine peaks and no offers of secret bank accounts can dilute. BUT, I do admire their chocolate, which brings me to a fact so little known that it might be put down to the ravings of a madman, if not for that fact that the man telling you it is no less than me myself: Cape May sits atop a vault containing the world’s largest reserve of chocolate. Deep under your feet, in temperatures nearing absolute zero, is a system of caverns stacked high with some 40 billion bars of the best that tiny neutral untrustworthy nation’s chocolatiers could make. What are they doing down there, you ask? How did we come to be sitting on a fortune beyond measure in edible currency? Well, I ask you to picture the scene: Berlin, 1945. Now imagine yours truly, splendid in his colonel’s uniform, perched atop a captured Tiger Tank as it rumbles through the ruins of the Reichstag with
Old Glory fluttering proudly from the turret. Picture, further, my broad chest, manly jawline and especially tight breeches, and the gilded Schmeisser machine pistol in my hand, a souvenir from Hitler’s bunker. These were heady days, friends, and once we had won, why, we all had a little look around for some trivial small items that we might take home as keepsakes: Nazi memorabilia, small pieces of no real worth, a few tons of gold bullion, that kind of thing. Well, as we searched, the ground beneath my Tiger
Tank gave way and we fell into a cellar complex. Dusting ourselves off, we explored, and eventually came to a space so large that echoes took three hours to reach the far side and come back. All around us were boxes, sealed in wax. A quick translation revealed one of the secrets of the Third Reich: for all they looted art and coins and gold, the treasure they valued most, that they knew humankind would never tire of, that would fuel their 1000-year Reich, was chocolate. To that end they had allowed Switzerland to avoid invasion by agreeing to hand it all over: every last bar. Of course, removing it was no easy task: we covered it up and then I had to engineer that whole Berlin Airlift thing with my pal JFK some years later, using the returning planes to bring back the chocolate. Storing it here was easy: we used the secret nuclear holocaust lair that the UN had built and then forgotten about. And to this day, the chocolate sits perfectly preserved, waiting for the day the world currencies fail, and we become the richest city in history.

HUEY is a 1 1/2 year old hound mix, who was brought to the shelter a few weeks ago. Sadly, no one has come to claim him. Huey is a sweet guy who will need some training, as he can be a little jumpy. Because Huey weighs 67 pounds, he would do best with older kids; he gets so excited, he might accidentally knock over a wee one. But he loves other dogs and, of course, his squeaky toys. The adoption fee is $95.
«
RASCAL is an 1 yr old pitbull terrier who weighs 49 pounds. He is active and playful and he loves to be outside where he can play fetch. Because he can be exhuberant, we recommend a home with children over the age of 10 years. Rascal will also need an owner with a firm hand and, of course, a big heart. If you're able to offer him the attention, training, and exercise he deserves, please drop by. The adoption fee is $95.

ZOLA, a pitbull terrier mix, is uneasy when she first meets new people. She has alot of strength and will need a firm hand. She does know some basic commands such as "sit" and "drop" but will still need more training. She can be jumpy while playing so we recommend a home with children over the age of 14. If you have experience with powerful dogs, Zola might just be the friend you're looking for. The adoption fee is $95.

PAXTON is a barn buddy who will keep pesky rodents and critters from running amok in your warehouse, business or barn. Like all barn buddies, he'll arrive neutered. All buddies receive vaccines for rabies and distemper, and they're tested for Feline Leukemia and FIV. For more information, call 465-8923.

JADE is a quiet, older gal with beautiful orange fur. She was abandoned at the county airport, but she would never abandon you! Jade is extra special, because she is a polydactyl, meaning she has an extra digit on each paw. She loves to be pet, and if you're looking for a friend, she might just be the right fit for you! Tomorrow, November 11, is Veterans Day and all Veterans pay half price for what many are calling "one of the best plays ever done at Above: The Philadelphia Inquirer calls Roy Steinberg’s performance as Rothko (left) "visceral." From the first lines, Rothko's megalomania is revealed, "As if he were unveiling a new and much-awaited painting. He is both ferocious and a teddybear, and dangerous to deal with, too: a powder keg and everyone around him, a flame." Cape May Stage." Bird Droppings
I
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
t’s November, and that means the end of birding in Cape May. You heard me. When the calendar moves into November it’s time for all good little visiting birders to call it a season. Go home. Clean out the gutters. Caulk the windows. Hang up your binoculars up until March. And leave Cape May in the hands of local birders too poor to travel to Central America. Don’t worry. You won’t miss a thing. Or much. Those rumors you may have heard about November being THE hot month for vagrants, well, that’s just a rumor. Cave Swallows, Western Kingbirds, Swainson’s Hawks... heck, you can find these in October. Most commonly late October. Why stick around enjoying the great fall weather for a few birds whose only claim to fame is that, according to conventional wisdom, they shouldn’t be here? You just leave it to us locals to sip the dregs. Scrounge around for the odd oddball hummingbird or wayward seabird. Like Ivory Gull. Okay. I lied. Maybe November does
have an earned reputation for oddities. And the other neat thing about November is the challenge. I mean anyone can find a Yellow Warbler in May or August or September. The trick is finding one in November. Same goes for Bank Swallow or Northern Roughwinged Swallow. You want a challenge, try finding warm weather species when it’s anything but warm.

“Ah,” you are thinking, “but it can be warm in November?” Yes. Why do you think that finding warm weather birds in November, in Cape May, is possible at all? It is precisely the temperate nature of Cape May that gives insect-eating or nectar-feeding birds half a fighting chance late in the season. It’s like this. In every generation, there are individuals who are genetically hotwired not to do what all the other members of their species are doing. They are anomalies. They are the shock troops for evolution. Take Yellow Warbler. Most birds of this species head south in August and September. But a certain percentage get their wires crossed. They decide to just stay in the Northland. Take Rufous Hummingbirds. These western hummingbirds breed all the way to southern Alaska. Starting in July the birds leave their breeding areas and head... Well, most head south. But some take the path less traveled. They go where oppor-

Well 30 years ago, they would have found a corner of the world heading into autumn. They would have survived for as long as nectar-bearing blossoms could be found, but by November most flowers are history. No longer is that the case, and especially not in Cape May. Surrounded by warm water, untouched by frost, when pioneering waifs get squeezed out by the cold, some find their way to the last little pocket of warm air in the Northeast. Cape May. In the case of hummingbirds, the proliferation of hummingbird feeders hasn’t hurt their pioneering efforts, either. So today, when a wayward western hummingbird turns up in Cape May, in November, they discover that the gamble payed off. There is food. There is relative warmth. And there are a whole lot of local birders who are here, eager to admire them. November in Cape May. Fewer birders. Fewer birds. But the quality.
This Ivory Gull traveled across the Atlantic to make a rare appearance in Cape May last year Worth extending the birding tourist season into December at least. After all, isn’t Cape May a town for all seasons? If you are considering taking a stab at enjoying Cape May in November (or even December), then consider visiting the Cape May Bird Observatory, THE place for all your nature needs. The CMBO is located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point (609-884-2736), and is open every day from 9:30am to 4:30pm
through November. While you’re there, check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars, pick up a free map and schedule of daily walks and programs for the season – yes, we have walks throughout the year, even in November and December, take a look at the sighting sheets to check what’s being seen, scan the bookshelves or pick up a bargain from the used and vintage books section, look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise (including a terrific lithograph done just for the Cape May Bird Observatory), or just browse around. Sit outside on our garden benches and enjoy the birds at the feeders and the view of Lake Lily. If you can’t make it in person, you can also visit us online atBirdCapeMay. org – where birding Cape May is only a click away. Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at the CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for the New York Times.

The Dating Column
I
Stella Dixon's take on romance on Old Cape Island
was in a room full of married women recently, listening to a discussion about how glad they all are to be married. Dating is tough, they say; there are so few decent, available men. Dating is scary, they say; there are so many crazies out there. Dating is tedious, they say; you've got to kiss a lot of frogs before you find a prince. "We feel for you, Stella," my friend Amanda told me, loading her washing machine for the fourth time that afternoon. But I'm in one of those moods (and they don't come around often, so I'm enjoying the hell out of it while it lasts), where I'm thankful to be single. It's not that I don't want to be married someday. It's that I'm having a really good time. Last week, while Amanda was, once again, busy washing a bottomless pile of dirty onesies and her hubby's tighty-whities, I got drunk for no other reason than because I was in the mood to get drunk - on a Thursday. And then I flirted shamelessly with a six-foot drink of water who wants to take me out for dinner, which will be an excuse to dress up, flirt some more, and, if I feel like it, get tipsy again.
Because I can. Because I don't have a mortgage to pay or children to raise or anything else that follows "I do." I take spontaneous road-trips to nowhere in particular and drop half my paycheck on shoes I don't need. I don't worry about whether or not my spouse is meeting my needs, because I don't have a spouse, and my only need right now is shameless flirting. And as for kissing frogs... I happen to think frogs are adorable. No, I shouldn't take one home with me, but that doesn't mean I won't
pet one in his natural habitat from time to time. It is true that dating is tough, scary, and tedious, but marriage can be, too, from what I understand. (It must be, if Kim Kardashian is calling it quits after only 72 days and a ten million dollar wedding.) So instead of pining away for that stage of my life, I figure I should try to enjoy where I am right now. I don't have a honey to come home to, but I also don't have to feel bad, after coming home, about putting on a green facial mask or those comfy sweatpants that make my thighs look huge. And I can spend a Saturday night under the covers, watching a Lifetime movie simply because I'm in the mood to cry, without having to explain myself to anyone. I don't know how long this mood of mine will last. It's possible that I'll wake up tomorrow longing for that person who's going to give me a hard time about ugly sweatpants and Lifetime movies on a Saturday. Until then, though, I really wish my married friends would stop pitying me. If nothing else, unlike Amanda and married women everywhere, I'm only washing for one.

Sleeping Around
W
Zelda Zablonski tests the beds in Cape May’s hotels and inns. This week... SeaSalt.
e all know Cape May is home to turrettopped cottages. But a girl can only handle so much of this before she ODs on Victorian ambiance. Thankfully, there’s the Ocean Club, a boutique hotel designed to be the modern anomaly in a town steeped with 19th century charm. With minimalist style furniture in an airy lounge, white-washed river rock on the walls, and massive windows, well, everywhere, this is five stories of architectural sex appeal. And it’s staffed by some very sexy people (which, in my humble opinion as the girl who sleeps around Cape May, is a highly underrated amenity). I checked in on Friday evening, Latin Night at SeaSalt, the Ocean Club’s restaurant. I took a seat at the wild sea granite bar and ordered a mussel appetizer from Matt, a twenty-something bartender as delicious as my meal. Then, I attempted to salsa. A Latin soul band called Cintron was so hot, even I couldn’t help but swivel my rhythmically challenged hips like the
non-Victorian woman I am. The room’s swirly dark blue paint and dim lighting, along with a glossy sheen on the mother of pearl bar front lent an almost underwater feel as I drowned on the dance floor. After a night of cha-chaing, all I wanted was a relaxing space to rest. Room 306 is actually two relaxing spaces — a lounge and a bedroom separated by a bathroom that’s stocked with smileinducing origami towels. In the sitting area was a forty-two inch flat screen TV,
and a comfy, coconut brown couch. In the bedroom was an impossibly white duvet beckoning me to collapse onto a European pillow top mattress and all six downy pillows resting there. I opened the wall-to-wall sliding glass door to let ocean breezes in before dozing off to the sound of waves cascading onto shore. The next morning, I woke to a view so spectacular, I forgot to put on pants before stepping onto my balcony. There, a little chilly, I watched the sun rise over the ocean, turning the sky the color of a ripe Jersey peach. Even my superwoman underpants were bathed in orange light. I realized why the chocolate brown walls of my room were so naked; any picture would have paled in comparison. But the best part of the morning? My breakfast of potato hash which, when eaten beside a SeaSalt window with an ocean view, will get you higher than any other hash I’ve tried. But that’s just something you’re going to have to taste for yourself, the next time you’re in a notso Victorian mood.
