The Police Blotter

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – A mechanic reported that 18 packages of marijuana were packed in the engine compartment of a car brought in for an oil change. The car’s owner told police she didn’t realize the mechanic would have to raise the hood to change the oil.

Classic Quotations

A Story From The Past “I’ll just be hanging round the mistletoe, hoping to be kissed.” Mia, Love Actually “The mistletoe hung in the castle hall, The holly branch shone on the old oak wall.” Thomas Haynes Bayly “Oh, look. We’re under the mistletoe. Well, this is awkward.” Stephen Colbert “A kiss under the mistletoe. You know, mistletoe can be deadly if you eat it.” Selina Kyle “But a kiss can be even deadlier, if you mean it.” Bruce Wayne Batman Returns “Ho-ho, the mistletoe, hung where you can see. Somebody waits for you – kiss her once for me.” Johnny Marks

On September 21, 1775, a battalion of light infantry soldiers from Cape May County was assembled in compliance with a congressional edict. An election was held at Cape May Court House to appoint officers to oversee the battalion and a force of sailors was tasked with protecting the waters off Cape May’s coast. Those elected to office proclaimed that all citizens of Cape May County between the ages of 15 and 50 would be expected to join the revolution and fight with the colonists. Ben Miller

Facebook Mystery Contest

Weird Word Of The Week

APAGOMIS This is the genus of bird more commonly known as the Lovebird. These birds are social and affectionate small parrots. They do make kissing motions, but are not thought to actually kiss as humans do. The name stems from their strong, monagomous pair bondings and the long periods which paired birds spend sitting together.

KNOW your way around Cape May? Think of yourself as the observant type? Feast your eyes on the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Kate Chadwick. If you think you know what establishment you’re staring at, then you have a chance to win a gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter – follow the instructions carefully. And, don’t worry if you have never used Facebook before – it’s easy! Just ask your six-year-old nephew for help. To enter, look for the mystery photo at facebook.com/ exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

Random Fact Of The Week

Sadly, the translation of the word “mistletoe” isn’t very romantic. A few centuries ago, folks observed that mistletoe tended to take root where birds had left their droppings. “Mistal” is an Anglo-Saxon word that means “dung” and “tan” means “twig,” so mistletoe actually means “dung on a twig.”

Fortune Cookie Of The Week J “New people are entering your life, bringing new concepts.” J Once a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with red curry seafood. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editors

H

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

ANDS up if you’ve seen the Best Movie of All Time, aka It’s A Wonderful Life. Keep your hands up if you’ve seen it so many times that you’re over it. Okay, now put your hands down and quit being a Grinch. Christmas isn’t Christmas without a tear-soaked viewing of Frank Capra’s classic fable. And this year, Christmas won’t be Christmas without you going to see an inspiring adaptation of the movie at Cape May Stage. We saw This Wonderful Life on opening night last Friday and, to invoke a reviewing cliché, we really DID laugh and cry. The star of the show is Larry Daggett who, coincidentally, looks a bit like an elf. Larry does a remarkable job playing around 20 characters from the film. That’s right, he plays everyone from George Bailey to Clarence the Angel (Second Class), and Nick the bartender at Martini’s to Old Man Potter. And he plays them SO WELL! The show is a brisk 70 minutes long, and will likely be the most fun and festive 70 minutes you’ll spend this holiday season. We can’t recommend it highly enough (and we must mention the set, which, as is the norm these days at Cape May Stage, is superbly conceived). For tickets and more information, visit capemaystage.com. speaking of events you cannot miss, since there are only five issues of Exit Zero remaining this year it’s our duty to begin banging the drum for THE big event of Cape May’s winter calendar. We are referring to the EIGHTH Annual Exit Zero Burns Supper, which will be held at the Ugly Mug on Thursday, January 26. This event has become a sell-out gig every year, which we’re very pleased about

³

because proceeds go to Cape May Stage’s Preservation Fund, which was set up to maintain the theater company’s beautiful building on Lafayette Street. For readers who are not familiar with the event (there might be one or two of you out there), it celebrates Scotland’s most famous poet, Rabbie Burns, who wrote, among many other things, “Auld Lang Syne.” Why do we celebrate a Scottish poet? It’s a good question, and the only answer we have is that the publisher of this peppy periodical is Scottish. But who cares if our logic is tenuous – it’s a great night that many people start looking forward to months in advance. You will enjoy Scottish singalongs, poetry recitals, and bagpipes played by the Irish Pipe Brigade. The sight (and sound) of those burly guys doing laps around the bar of the Mug while pumping out such classics as “Amazing Grace” and “Scotland the Brave” is goosebump-inducing. The Burns Supper also features that most misunderstood food: the haggis. Many Americans still refuse to sample this fine food, which is such a shame, because, trust us, it is no longer made up of all sorts of offal (deliberate usage) things wrapped in

a sheep’s stomach – these days it’s either choice cuts of lamb or sirloin, mixed with oatmeal and spices. If you are too much of a wuss to try some, chef Gary Romberger and his guys in the kitchen also cook up fish ‘n’ chips. Tickets for the event are STILL $30 (just as they were at the inaugural event, in 2005). Trust us, you need to reserve them in advance because tickets will almost certainly not be available at the door. To buy them, you can either call us at (609) 770-8479 or buy them from our website at www.exitzero.us. You can also mail us a check (see our address on the inside back page) or stop by the office. staying on the subject of amazingly cool things, we are extending our sale at the Exit Zero Store and Gallery. We are offering 25% off everything between now and the end of the year. There are some excellent stocking stuffers in here, assuming your stockings are big enough to fit goodies like sweatshirts embroidered with a college-style EZ logo. And while you are here, drop a dollar (or two) into our collection jar for the West Cape May Christmas Parade which, as you surely know, happens this Saturday. And finally, the Exit Zero family welcomed a new member this week… a 12-year-old mutt called Rudy who was featured in last week’s animal adoption feature. Rudy had been at the shelter for four months, and there weren’t many takers for the old fella. We can report that Rudy is a happy camper – he enjoys strolls on the beach and chicken dinners with the EZ puppies, April and Friday, and likes to stretch out on what has now become HIS queen-sized bed. Also, he howls like a banshee at the slightest provocation. Which is ridiculously cute. See you at the parade!

The Movie Column

T

Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews “Hugo”

here are so many words that can describe the new film from Oscar winner Martin Scorsese: dazzling and spectacular come to mind. Critics and audiences agree for the most part: the film is stunning, a winner, a must-see. And when you figure out what the film is about, you know why the film industry will fall in love with it and will likely lavish it with many, many awards. And I can agree with almost all of that. Almost. Hugo is a film about pioneer filmmaker Georges Méliès. For a student of film, there is so much to take in. The history, the folklore, the recreation of productions that breathe life into those old reels. And certainly there is no better character study than Méliès (played by Ben Kingsley). A magician, an entrepreneur, a visionary, Méliès made more than 500 films over his career. His most famous short, A Trip to the Moon, depicts a rocket ship landing in the eye of the moon. To say his work was creative is an understatement. This alone makes Hugo mandatory viewing for every film student.

A still from Georges Méliès’ “A Trip To The Moon” Scorsese, certainly no slouch in filmmaking, creates a true sense of place with textures and colors that are beautiful. He depicts what must have been such energy and passion for the new art form that was early cinema. But for those not so interested in film history, perhaps this story is too much “media on media.” Do common folk really care to see a reporter talking about

how a certain news story was covered by a certain newspaper? So it is the redeeming value of focusing on Méliès that perhaps leaves this film open to criticism. You will see this film at the Oscars no doubt — and deservedly so. The industry loves when one of its own pays homage to its roots with such a spectacular work. But I’ll stop short of calling Hugo a masterpiece. While it had many moving moments, it didn’t move me deep down (and I wish it had). I know, I know, this is all blasphemy from a guy who runs the film festival in town — and one who makes movies at that! I was inspired somewhat by Méliès’ life and passion for his work, his creativity and drive. It made me want to ramp up my own productions that have been languishing for lack of time (or as most indie filmmakers will cry about: funds). You shouldn’t miss the spectacle of color and brilliant cinematography of Hugo on the big screen. But when you’re done, catch some of Méliès’ work as well: you’ll have richer insights into what made this man so passionate about his art.

Merry Deathmas

I

“Snow Blind,” chapter three of Terry O’Brien’s frighteningly good new short story

tried to keep it together. The bludgeoning death of Cape May City Council member James Rappaport had just taken an unexpected turn. The grieving widow, it turns out, had been participating in some sexual extracurriculars, and I was on the syllabus. The Janice Rappaport who stood before me in all her Amazonian glory (pushing 50, she could easily have filled out any Wonder Woman costume, and look 30 while doing it) was the woman I’d encountered as Carol Brown several weeks earlier while drowning my sorrows – a pharmaceutical rep in town and looking for some free and easy companionship, which I had proved all too eager to offer. I had been able to push it out of my mind as the one-off moment of weakness of a drunk guy pining for his distant girlfriend and filling the void with the closest warm body. But now, with Janice/Carol standing before me, it all came rushing back, the guilt and nausea. The worst part was; I knew, at some point, I would have to tell Daryl, my newspaper reporter girlfriend, about the whole sordid mess. No doubt the news would get to Philly, no doubt she would be involved in some capacity, and no doubt she’d see it on my face the moment she looked at me. That was something to look forward to. But for the moment, my goal was to make it out of the room holding the dead body and the woman I’d schtupped without passing out or barfing up my hazelnut Wawa coffee. Thankfully, perhaps sensing my distress, Janice cinched her silky robe closer, gave me a brief, quizzical look, and said, “If I might… I’d like to freshen up. There’s coffee in the kitchen. I’ll be down in, say, 20 minutes?” Tim said, “That will be fine. We’re very sorry for your loss.” Again she looked me in the eye, searching for a moment, then, “Thank you. It’s… nice to have met you both.” Tim turned to leave, hooked me with an arm and brought me with him. “The hell was that?” he asked me. I shook my head. “Let’s talk to the cops.” So we did. In ten minutes, over some fresh, exotic coffee, we rehashed everything we thought we knew in the previous ten minutes: killer enters/exits through hole in back of the chimney, in between he whacks Rappaport. Nothing stolen, nothing missing, despite the obvious worth of some of the interior antiquities. Money was not the motive.

The gurney bumped down the steps with James Rappaport’s remains in a black bag. I tried not to imagine his crushed head bouncing around inside it. This was a crime of passion. A call came over Officer Shawn Austin’s radio; Lionel Jeffries, the mason contracted to repair the Rappaport’s crumbling chimney, was in custody at police HQ, so they left. Detective Curtis, 50ish, raincoated, lean and hungry, lingered. He said to us, “Now boys, I’m prepared to give you as much leeway as you need. But please do not mistake my kindness for weakness. The moment I sense you’re gumming up the works I’ll shut you out colder and tighter than my wife’s vagina. Am I clear?” We nodded. I could somehow taste his metaphor. He left. Tim and I poured ourselves another cup of Joe. I sensed a hint of cinnamon. Real cowboy, I am. Finally, Janice emerged looking more put together in a pair of jeans and dark sweater. She stepped into the kitchen, “Thank you for waiting. I just needed a moment. I loved my husband very much.” I broke out in a sweat, a combination of the now stuffy forced air heat, the hot coffee, and the beautiful woman I’d conjugated with putting on her little show. “We don’t want to rush Mrs.… Ms Rappaport,” I said through a sticky throat, “but we have other interviews to conduct. So if we could get right to it.”

Was that too harsh? It felt too harsh. She replied. “I understand. I’ll tell you what I told Detective Curtis; I got home around midnight from a council meeting…” “Midnight?” I interjected. She replied, “A few of us had dinner and cocktails. We ate at the Merion Inn, then to the Brown Room for drinks.” She put her gaze on me, “You know the Brown Room, don’t you, Mr Whitaker?” I swallowed, my throat clicked. “I’ve been… a few times… please go on.” “That’s it. I went upstairs to talk to James; he wasn’t feeling particularly well so he had retired early. And I found him… like that.” At that moment the medical examiner’s team bumped their gurney down the steps with James Rappaport’s remains in a black bag. I tried not to imagine his crushed head bouncing around inside it. Failed. A stiff, chilling breeze shot through the kitchen as they made their way out the front door. Tim looked down the hallway after them, I looked at Janice, Janice looked at the floor. The door was pulled shut and Janice went on. “I called the police, waited until a decent hour, then called you. And here we are.” “Here we are,” I echoed.

Page 46 Merry Deathmas ? From Page 45 Tim asked, “Did you have anything with you, Mrs… Ms Rappaport?” “Please,” she snapped, “call me Janice.” Tim nodded gravely. “Did you have anything with you, Janice?” “Just my laptop,” she answered. “I take extensive notes at our meetings. I always have it with me.” “Okay,” Tim announced. “That’ll do for now. We’ll be in touch shortly.” She said, “If I could just have a word with Mr Whitaker. In private.” Tim raised an eyebrow but did not object. “Sure. I’ll be in the car. Freezing.” He gave us a quick glance, bundled up his coat, and left. When he was gone she approached me aggressively. “What are you playing at?” “Me? What about you?” “What do you mean what about me?” “I mean what the hell is going on? Who is Carol Brown? What was that all about?” Her anger wavered. “I don’t understand… you mean… oh God, don’t tell me…” “What?” I asked, my anger rising. Unexpectedly, she laughed in my face. Now I was completely lost. “What?” “You really thought I was some single, horny sales rep catting around Cape May? Do you think we’re living in Grey’s Anatomy?” I put my hands on my hips, personally affronted. “Since that’s what you told me you were, yes. I did.” She laughed again and put a hand on my shoulder. I said, “I don’t find this particularly funny.” “How could you not know who I am? I’m in the paper every week! Exit Zero covers our council meetings like they’re the damn Warren Commission.” I could have told her my tortured history with Exit Zero, how original founder Donal Lonegan had made me out a fool before going crazy and deciding to kill a bunch of his writers as ‘The Editor’ serial killer, before getting whacked himself by my partner and that now, even though a couple of allies ran it, I was still leery of cracking open an issue. But I didn’t. Instead I said, “I don’t read much.” To which Janice replied, “Why am I not shocked by that?” I was getting a little tired of people making me feel stupid. Perhaps sensing my indignation she said, “I’m sorry. I thought… I thought you were playing the game with me.” I pouted. “I wasn’t.”

Thursday, December 1, 2011 She removed her hands from my body, which left me oddly disappointed. “Really, I’m sorry. My husband and I have… had… a complicated relationship.” “What’s so complicated?” I asked rhetorically. “He was gay, you’re not, you sought out companionship. Human Nature 101.” She cocked an eyebrow. Impressed? I went on, “The important thing is to figure out who did this and why.” “Thank you,” she said. “And… I’m sorry. It was presumptuous of me to assume you knew. Now you’re in an awkward position.” The phrase laid there a moment, gaining momentum. She could not resist, and with a wicked smile said, “And not for the first time.” I said, “Enough. Now that you’ve had your fun, I’d appreciate it if we can keep everything on a profesisonal level from here on out. No more games.” She nodded. “No more games.” “You’re sure you’ve told us everything?” “Positive.” “All right, then. I’ll be calling soon.” I turned and left the kitchen, headed for the front door.

Lionel was shiny with sweat. I could only imagine how nervous a young black man might feel sitting in a police station with a murder floating around. “How’s it going, Lionel?” Tim asked and offered a hand. “Been better,” he answered. I ignored their obvious camaraderie. “Mr Jeffries, according to this police report, the Rappaports hired you two weeks ago to fix their ailing chimney, work you started just two days ago.” “Yeah,” Lionel replied. “I had two other smaller jobs to finish out at the Point. Point’s a goddamned gold mine for a mason. Shit’s always falling apart out there. Gonna put my kids through college.” “You have kids?” I asked. Lionel shook his head. “Figure of speech.” I continued, “Says here you were home alone last night, watching TV, but don’t remember what you were watching.” Lionel licked his lips and averted his gaze. Lying. “Was probably SportsCenter, I was trying to catch the scores.” “What scores?” Lionel shrugged, “Sixers. Phillies. You

“You really thought I was some single, horny sales rep catting around Cape May? Do you think we’re living in ‘Grey’s Anatomy?’” “Mr Whitaker,” she stopped me. “Travis.” I turned. “Yes?” She wrung her hands, looked at the floor, then back to me. “I really enjoyed our time together. Maybe after all of this…” Oh Christ. “One thing at a time, Janice.” Then I left. I thought I played it cool, but who knew? One thing was for certain; once I told Tim, and I would have to tell Tim, there would be no end to the ball-breaking. Fantastic. I walked up the street and hopped in the car, which had been running long enough to still be goddamned freezing. I sat, blew on my hands, and looked at Tim. He was smiling. “Mr Whitaker?” He laughed. How did he already know? * Police HQ, Washington Street, a few minutes later We sat at the table across from Lionel Jeffries, a handsome African-American of about 30, same age as Tim. They’d gone to high school together. Had a history. I didn’t know him from Lionel Jefferson. Is that racist? Felt racist. I started, “We’ll try to keep this brief.”

know.” “Phillies don’t play in December. You know?” “Just catching the scores…” He was clearly nervous now, playing with his hands, folding, unfolding his arms. “Big fan,” I said. “Easy,” Tim cautioned. I said, “We’re talking about ten hours ago, Tim, and he can’t remember what he watched? Doesn’t pass the smell test.” “Why don’t you tell us what you were really doing, Mr Jeffries?” “Okay,” he said. “You’re bound to find out anyway. I was with a lady.” I looked at Tim, perhaps a little too happy with myself. I said. “Any particular lady? Anybody who can vouch for your whereabouts? It’s pretty important for you that this lady actually exists.” Again he hemmed and hawed. “Damn, man…” I leaned away from the table, giving him space. “Why don’t we start with a place? Where were you with a lady?”

Merry Deathmas ? From Page 46 “Congress Hall.” Calmly I asked, “What kind of lady? Local? Tourist?” Lionel looked me in the eye. “Yes.” “Pharmaceutical rep?” “Yes.” “Carol Brown?” “Yes.” “Janice Rappaport.” * The Rappaport Home “That part about telling me everything, was I not clear on that?” I said to Janice Rappaport, who sat across from me, fiddling with her laptop. “I didn’t want to embarrass Lionel, or my husband.” Tim just sat there, listening. Lionel had told us everything, which was just about exactly what I’d told Tim on our way to police HQ an hour ago. Janice posed as an out-of-town sales rep, engaged Lionel in conversation, they had a few drinks, ended up upstairs. Except, unlike me, Lionel was hip to the game, as he’d been hammering away at their chimney only a few hours earlier. “I go to the Brown Room on Thursday nights to hear the piano player,” Lionel had told us. “Five or six drinks in a pretty lady comes up, took a few minutes to figure out who it was. I tried to play it off, but she was committed. So I went along. We went upstairs, did our thing.” I wondered if Janice had a room on retainer there. “How long have you been putting on this little act?” I asked. Janice cleared her throat. “I have been entertaining gentlemen ever since I entered into my arrangement with James. It has been common knowledge among my friends. For those with any faint sense of decorum…” Her eyes penetrated me. “… it is not a big deal. I was happy, my husband was happy, and my male, sometimes female friends, were extremely happy.” I could not argue that. Her

skills were impressive. “That’s all well and good,” I told her, “but when this gets out there will be scandal; two prominent members of the local government are involved.” “It is my hope,” she replied, “that I can rely on the discretion of all involved.” I shook my head. “I don’t see how that can happen.” “I do,” Janice said and turned the laptop around. On the screen a grainy image appeared; Janice, turning on the embedded webcam and stepping away in lingerie. She looked spectacular. The time stamp on the video was last night, 11:37pm, around the time of the murder. The camera adjusted. Janice climbed onto the bed and lay down in a luxurious pose. Across the room a door opened and steam billowed out. Lionel Jeffries, wrapped in a towel, appeared, freshly showered and a little drunk. More importantly, the video and time stamps firmed up his alibi. Lionel climbed into bed with her. Janice Xed out the screen. Tim cleared his throat. “I don’t see how, aside from covering Lionel’s ass…” I clenched at the poor choice of words, “… that video guarantees silence.” Janice looked at me. “I told you,” she said, “I always have my laptop with me.” She clicked a folder on the desktop labeled “Meeting Notes.” It opened, revealing what must have been 100 video files. “I’ve had many meetings over the years,” she said, acid honey dripping from her voice, “and I’m sure most of the participants would be loathe to allow the details of those meetings to become public domain.” I turned red. From anger, fear, frustration. It meant I would have to swallow the guilt of my indiscretion for, well, forever. “Are we clear?” She asked. I said nothing. Tim said, “We’re clear, ma’am.” Then we left. Next Week: Santa’s Slay

The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone

VERYONE exaggerates from time to time. (Okay, maybe that’s an exaggeration, but most people do.) I, for one, exaggerate all the time. (Okay, maybe not all the time, but I do it plenty.) Just this week, I said that my house is a million degrees, I called my ex-boyfriend the worst man on the planet, and I said that my Primo hoagie was better than sex. None of these things are true, of course... although Primo hoagies are eye-rollingly good. The point is that I understand the compulsion to exaggerate. I don’t do it in my writing (that’s just bad journalism), but in my everday life, sure. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with this, because when I exaggerate, people know it and, what’s more, so do I. I don’t really believe that my ex is the worst man alive, for instance (although it pains me to admit that). But when certain customers of the restaurant where I work exaggerate, they believe what they’re saying. One of my guests wrote on a comment card recently that he’d had the worst experience of his life

at my table. Either this man is the world’s most deluded individual (no exaggeration), or the world’s luckiest. Sure, I screwed up his order (he got a tuna steak instead of a steak-steak), but “the worst” experience of his life? Puh-lease. If that’s true, this guy should count his blessings. I’ve also had a guest tell me that our salmon is “the most disgusting” thing she’s ever put in her mouth. This held very little water with me, as I saw the gentleman this woman was sucking face with all night, and he wasn’t exactly the most delicious looking thing, either. The hostess might just get the worst of it. A 30-minute wait for a table is often a

“travesty.” And a table by the bathroom is “unacceptable.” (It may not be ideal, people, but I’m pretty sure you could accept it without an apocalypse occuring.) But the most annoying dining room exaggerations aren’t really the complaints; praiseful hyperbole is far more irritating. People are constantly asking to speak with the chef so that they might tell him how “blissful” his mashed pototatoes are, or how “idyllic” his yams taste. I appreciate the enthusiasm, folks, but we are talking about yams here. (My idea of idyllic involves something more along the lines of a white sandy beach and an achingly handsome cabana boy. Sweet potatoes don’t exactly factor in.) And as an FYI, no matter how “blissful” it is to lay eyes upon this particular chef (he’s quite a looker), he won’t be seduced by brown-nosing embellishment. I don’t think it would hurt any of us to rein in the overstatement a bit; reality is interesting enough on its own, after all. And besides, if I could get through an entire shift without any exaggeration, that would be, like, the best thing ever.

The Answer Lady

T

Wise answers to perplexing questions

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady My daughter desperately wants a pet for Christmas, and I am running out of excuses. I am a single mom and I just don’t feel like I can handle a puppy or kitten at this point. I’m sure she will be perched on Santa’s knee shortly, asking for a pet. Help! – Mommy Dear Mommy This is a quandary that the Answer Lady has addressed before, and she feels your pain, as she is herself a mommy to both her own children and to several adopted furry ones. As much love and joy as they bring to her life, they can be demanding and time-consuming, and she can only imagine how much more difficult it would be on one’s own. Perhaps when your little one is too big for Santa’s knee (then again, are we ever, really?) and therefore better able to participate in its care, you can revisit the topic of a higher-mainte-

nance pet. In the meantime, pop over to Celebrate Cape May and invest in a hermit crab. Actually, you only have to invest in the cage set-up, starting at $14.99, and they’ll throw in the crab of your choice for free. Granted, your average hermit crab does not have the personality of your average puppy, but the Answer Lady has it on good authority that they DO have personalities (or, more accurately, “some are livelier than others”). When your little one is more grown-up, then you can think about a ride to the animal shelter to

adopt someone a little more um, interesting. Dear Answer Lady Every year, I eat like a pig from Halloween until New Year’s Eve (okay, maybe Valentine’s Day), and then I get mad at myself and go on a crazy diet. How do I stop this roller-coaster ride? – Miss Piggy Dear Miss Get thee to a gym, gentle reader. The Answer Lady will herself admit to a certain – shall we say? – lack of self-control when it comes to eating, but she finds that as long as she keeps moving, she can keep the weight fairies at bay. Sometimes, too, we tell ourselves that we WILL take a walk every day on our lunch hour, but if we don’t take a lunch hour, it never happens. So, the plan becomes to join a gym and hand over the responsibility of whipping our sorry butts into shape to a nice trainer. North Beach has just moved across the street to a larger facility and is now North Beach Health Club of Cape May – sign up for one of their hellish – uh, helpful – the Answer Lady means helpful! – Boot Camps, and voila. If you don’t look model-perfect, it’s someone else’s fault. It’s the American way.

eing ugly is a curse. No, really. According to a University of Texas researcher, ugly people will earn about $230,000 less over the course of their careers than good-looking people. He’s proposed governmental protections to stop the discrimination against the ugly. Finally, being obnoxiously good looking could be a hate crime. Certainly, downtrodden minorities across America — those encumbered with skin that isn’t Crayola flesh tone, or X chromosomes, or a love of show tunes and interior design — may consider this cause frivolous, but I say it’s time for ugly Americans to rise up and claim our rightful place beside the beautiful people. In fact, we should start by officially calling ourselves Uglo-Americans. You know how we’re portrayed by Hollywood. There’s the DUFF (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) who helps hotties look hotter. The ugly duckling, who starts off unbearable to look at until the magnanimous hero or heroine adopts them, gives them a makeover, and shows

them how gorgeous they’d be if they just got rid of those awful glasses. Of course there’s the nerd, beaten up by jocks, scoffed at by cheerleaders, who ultimately has the last laugh after he invents something or founds a little start-up tech company that’s worth more than the gross national product of Africa. There’s no room for ugly onscreen unless they’re becoming beautiful, enhancing beauty, or filthy rich. The staff of Exit Zero isn’t immune to the

ugly phenomenon. Our own Stella Dixon... no, wait, she’s smoking hot. The Answer Lady? Actually, she’s cute and witty. And the boss, Jack Wright, no, wait, he has that Scottish brogue that causes the ladies to overlook his numerous physical defects. That leaves me, Everett Chance, champion of South Jersey’s plain-lookers, leader of guys who will never play volleyball with our shirts off, lord of the average Joes who bring home a steady paycheck, don’t beat up women, and do more than drink beer and watch ESPN. So join me, Uglo-Americans. Let’s meet at Higher Grounds, and we’ll hide our hideousness behind large coffee mugs. The world shall know us by our bad hair and lack of unblemished skin. Because they owe us $230,000, and it’s time to collect. Send an email to info@exitzero.us, and we’ll go to dinner. Afterwards I’ll write all about it, a combined date and restaurant review. Your name will be changed, the restaurant’s won’t. You might wind up the First Lady of Uglo-Americans.

The Cape May Crossword

None of that generic nonsense you see in other papers... a puzzle just for “Exit Zero”! By Jon Roth So YOU love crosswords? Great. Sit down, get a cup (or glass) of your favorite beverage, relax and enjoy this puzzle. The answers to the crossword are all related to this week’s issue. The theme: mistletoe. The solution can be found on the front page of our website, exitzero.us. ACROSS 1. In centuries past, many believed mistletoe provided protection from spells cast by these female enchanters. 3. Mistletoe grows in tropical and subtropical regions. On the East Coast, you won’t find it further north than this familiar state. 6. W hen this Three’s Company star was diagnosed with breast cancer, she took mistletoe extract in lieu of chemotherapy. 9. In this song, the singer requests “snow and mistletoe, and presents ‘round the tree.” 12. The berries in mistletoe are this color. 13. T his is the country responsible for popularizing the Christmas tree. 17. Another important kind of holiday foliage, this plant is poisonous, like the mistletoe, and is originally from Mexico. 18. T his is a Rodgers & Hammerstein musical. It’s also the state whose emblem depicts mistletoe. 19. T he “mistle” in mistletoe is Old English for this word (for a hint, check the page 12). 21. This English Christmas carol doesn’t mention mistletoe, but does refer to two

These priests were huge mistletoe fans... 16 Down

other plants that get a lot of attention during the holidays. 22. In this Christmas song, the narrator saw something illicit taking place “underneath the mistletoe last night.” 23. This teen’s recently released holiday album is titled Under the Mistletoe. DOWN 2. This song references a mistletoe “hung where you can see.” 4. This American author, best known for writing “The Headless Horseman,” was also one of the first to mention mistletoe in the States. 5. While this word sounds the same as the first half of “mistletoe,” it actually describes a liturgical booklet that contain instructions for a mass. 7. In the mythology of this Scandinavian country, the god Baldur is killed by an arrow made of mistletoe. 8. Mistletoe was often considered a sign

of truce. If warring factions exchanged it, fighting was over for the day. Much like offering an _____ ______. 10. Heart pounding? Mistletoe is sometimes used medicinally to make sure this doesn’t get too high. 11. We associate mistletoe with Christmas, but in much of Europe the plant is more prevalent during this January holiday. 14. When he ventured into the underworld to see his dead father, this mythic founder of Rome carried mistletoe to stay safe. 15. In this country, where Afrikaans is the most common language, mistletoe is crushed to create a glue-like substance, which helps to trap birds. 16. These pagans, who existed in England and Ireland during ancient times, held mistletoe in very high regard, even using it in ceremonies of human sacrifice. 20. The mistletoe plant is also a ________. Without a host tree, it wouldn’t be able to survive.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

am not sure about The Mistletoe. On the one hand, it encourages spontaneous smooching, which I am all for. But on the other hand, it makes one the object of spontaneous kissing, which I am not all for, unless I can vet the would-be kissers. Of course, back in MY day, kissing was something that took place only after one had known a young lady or gentleman for at least 15 years, and was pre-arranged for a public place at exactly noon, with a dozen chaperones in each camp, and a sworn-in witness from either the judiciary or constabulary on hand to ensure no boundaries were crossed. And that kiss had to be no longer than one and a half seconds, with one’s tongue protruding from the SIDE of one’s mouth at all times so that witnesses could be sure that nothing “French” or otherwise untoward was going on. And a gentleman had to be very careful that his kisses were not so potent so as to make a lady swoon from excitement, nor so powerful that she had the air sucked from her lungs and subsequently passed out.

All of that changed, of course, in the time of Free Love, and in our city’s Cape Gay era. Back in those days, one was lucky to receive a kiss as a hasty fare-thee-well token as one’s paramour du jour left in the morning, both parties unsure of the other’s identity or even gender, for that matter. Of course I was an expert kisser, being possessed of naturally strong lips and having spent a college gap year as the only male under the age of 50 (I was 17) at an all-girl’s horseback-riding school in the Swiss Alps.

I swear, by evening I was oft so exhausted from locking lips that it was all I could do to lie down on the grass and, as I slept, various young ladies would kiss my upturned mouth, which still had enough instinctive kissing ability that the sound of their hearts thumping would sometimes wake me. Still, I was not unhappy to have the art of kissing more regulated, so that I was able to enjoy a simple walk through our fair city without being pounced upon (I had no time for this nonsense unless it was by the Late Mrs D’Catur, who had such passion for me that if I was gone for more than an hour, she would upon my return spring on me like a tiger). And so I am vaguely in favor of mistletoe, in that if I can see it in the room, and ensure there are none of those sorts of ninnies present who tape a sprig to their hat and prowl around looking foolish and puckered, then I can pick my moment to enjoy a peck on the lips. I am off to apply lip balm and prepare myself for your attentions…

Activity Of The Week

F

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: A Dickens Christmas Extravaganza.

ans of Charles Dickens have varied reasons for enjoying his work. Some readers like ghosts, or to see a character transformed with spirited help. Others appreciate the humor, such as the fun Dickens has with names – Mrs Chickenstalker and the Peerybingles are among my favorites, along with young Master Charley Bates, whose given name was often omitted. Many respond to his social commentary, or vivid description of London life. Dickens also tells compelling tales – David Copperfield was my first book of a thousand pages, and I remember wishing it were longer. And some Dickens fans just like what he did for Christmas. Many Christmas traditions began with Dickens, and others were popularized by him. A Christmas Carol is only one of five of Dickens’ Christmas-themed stories. Maybe that’s why Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts holds its Dickens Extravaganza this time of year, when scholars and fans – some in full Dickensian regalia – will gather in Cape May from December 4-6. The Dickens Extravaganza includes

performances, lectures, and a feast fit for Fezziwig. The festivities begin on December 4 with “Christmas Presents from the Past.” On December 5, there will be a lecture on David Copperfield, presented by Dr Jay Friedlin, president emeritus of the Philadelphia Dickens Fellowship; followed by a living history presentation by the Holiday Meeting

of the Cape May Literary Society. After lunch is a lecture on “Dickens’ Life, Times & Inspirations” by playwright John K. Alvarez, followed by a presentation of his one-man play, Sincerely, Ebenezer. Tuesday brings “A Morning of Holiday Music,” followed by a lecture on “The Impact of Industrialization on the Victorian Era.” The afternoon topic is Victorian spiritualism, and the event concludes with a “Gala Dickensian Feast.” Guests are invited to dress in period costume, or as a favorite character. The Extravaganza package is $150. Individual admission to lectures is $10, or admission to the Dickensian Feast is $50. Most events take place at the Inn of Cape May. For tickets, contact MAC at 609884-5404 or email info@capemaymac.org. The Dickens Christmas Extravaganza caters to teachers, readers, and ardent Dickens fans. But before you commit to reading the author’s complete works, consider that he wrote about 3.85 million words. Keep Dickens in your heart with the Dickens Christmas Extravaganza. Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

«

HUEY is an 18-month-old hound mix waiting for a rescuer. He was brought to the shelter by animal control a few weeks ago and, sadly, no one has come to claim him. He’s a sweet boy who will need some training as he can be a little jumpy, but with guidance he should be just fine. Because Huey weighs 67 pounds, he’d do best with older kids. He also likes other dogs (and squeaky toys!). The adoption fee is only $95.

«

LUCY, a 47-pound Foxhound, is a cutie who’s not yet seven years old. She can be anxious at times, so she is going to need a calm and quiet home with someone who has the patience and time to dedicate to her. If anyone is able to offer Lucy what she needs to thrive, please call the shelter at 609465-8923 for more information. This could be your best friend. The adoption fee is only $35.

«

SONIC is a handsome one-year-old American Eskimo/sheltie mix who was recently surrendered to the shelter because he was a bit rambunctious with the owner’s young child. He doesn’t know what he did wrong; he thinks he was just being the playful pup he is! Now, he needs a home where he’ll get lots of training, exercise, understanding and love. In return, he’ll be your loyal companion. The adoption fee is only $95.

TANK’S first owners left him behind when they moved out, and he was taken in by the new tenants. Unfortunately, although he’s very sweet, he couldn’t get along with the pet dogs. If you think you can spare enough love for this displaced cutie, please come in to the shelter and give him a chance; the adoption fee is only $20.

«

KIT is a four-year-old torti who was brought in with her brother, Kaboodle. He was lucky enough to be adopted, but Kit is still waiting for a forever home. Until a kind soul decides to care for her, she’s all alone! This is a shame, as she’s so loving and affectionate. She enjoys being petted, and she doesn’t mind being picked up.

«

CASSY is a barn buddy, who will keep pesky rodents and little critters from running amok in your warehouse, business or barn. Like all of the shelter’s barn buddies, she’ll arrive spayed, and vaccinated against distemper, rabies and feline leukemia. She’s also been FIV-tested and ear-tipped. For more information, call 465-8923.

Great Plays Make A Great Holiday advertisinG feature

E

EACH December, holiday decorations begin to deck the halls, families get together, and the air is filled with the sounds of laughter and joy. Cape May Stage brings all of those elements together in our Second Stage production of My Shadow And Me on Monday, December 5, and in our main stage production of This Wonderful Life now playing through December 31. Families will love My Shadow and Me which features song and dance — and even a puppet — as it explores how friends can support each other. Mary is backstage in a Broadway theatre when she encounters Bryan, a vaudevillian feeling a bit lost. Along with Fletcher the Dog, they create an act! New York performers like Maureen McGovern and Tovah Feldshuh have come to Cape May to premiere their show before it opens in New York. Children will giggle and adults will celebrate the happy feelings in this play. Tickets are only $20 for adults and $10 for kids and can be ordered at 884-1341 or online at capemaystage.org. Cape May Stage’s Second Stage Series brings you cutting edge new work on traditionally dark nights at the theatre. This Wonderful Life plays Thursdays through Saturdays at 8pm and Saturdays and Sundays at 3pm until New Year’s Eve. Cape May Stage encourages families to get together to see this iconic staple of the holidays. With the support of Sturdy Savings Bank, Cape May Stage has scheduled a half-price senior matinée on December 10 at 3pm. What a perfect time for grandparents to take their grand-

Bird Droppings

T

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

his column is about Snow Geese. You know, those big white birds you see in winter that aren’t swans. They used to be common. Then they became rare – the snow geese, not the swans. Then they became common – in fact, abundant. Sounds like life, doesn’t? Lots of ups and downs. As the name suggests, the birds are mostly white (only the wing tips are black). You’ve probably noted that lots of white or whitish birds have black wing tips (including Northern Gannet, assorted gulls and terns). I’ll tell you why at the end of the article. But the easiest way to tell Snow Geese from Canada Geese is by color – mostly white versus mostly gray. The other way is by voice. Canada Geese (not Canadian) say “ah-honk (kind of like a Canadian “a-honk,” which is probably why many people refer to them as Canadian Geese). Snow Geese say “wa-wa.” Wait a minute, you’re thinking. The logo on WAWA boasts a Canada Goose, not a Snow

Goose. Yeah. It does. Chances are the marketing people or the advertising agency got it wrong – not that it matters. Doesn’t diminish the quality of the sandwiches and the coffee is just as good. Back to geese. Snow Geese used to be very common along the Atlantic Seaboard and then, along with many other fish and fowl, they

aft

diminished as a result of unregulated hunting and/or harvesting and habitat alteration. In the 1950s, there was only one f lock of Snow Geese in New Jersey. They were located on Egg Island Point near Fortescue. The New Jersey Audubon Society used to lead an annual field trip (by boat) to see the couple of thousand birds. Now there are tens of thousands of Snow Geese that winter in the state. You can see them in the marshes south of Dennisville. You can see them pretty nearly everywhere along the Delaware Bayshore. You can see them on agricultural land in Gloucester County, in the marshes behind Atlantic City, on farmland in Hunterdon County... The birds are very, very common now. Relish it. My introduction to Snow Geese came when I was a sophomore in high school. I happened upon a book written by Paul Galico called, not surprisingly, The Snow

Continued On Page 90 ?

Page 90

Bird Droppings ? From Page 89 Goose. It was about a lonely, physically deformed English painter who met a grimy little Saxon girl who was carrying (it so happens) a wounded Snow Goose. The goose lived. The girl grew up. The painter and the girl fell in love. He died before the love came to fruition. It’s a short book. The first Snow Geese I ever saw were in the marshes near Tuckahoe. I was (believe it or not) hunting geese...or, more honestly, a buddy and I had a bunch of goose decoys spread out on the open marsh and we were lying amid them with shotguns in our hands with the espoused purpose of shooting one or two just in the event geese were more stupid than we were. We weren’t having much success (owing largely to the fact that the marsh was wrapped in a blind fog). Then, around 9am, we heard geese honking, except it was more a bark than a honk – more “wawa” than “ah-honk.” The f lock passed right over us. I couldn’t see anything but f lickering black triangles – the wing tips. The rest of the birds melted into the fog. It was neat. Incidently, for some inexplicable rea-

son we just left all those decoys on the marsh. I’ve often wondered what waterfowler benefited from our casual generosity. The next time I saw Snow Geese was in North Carolina: Cape Hatteras National Seashore, to be exact. It was December. I was camping. It was cold. There was a guy and two kids in a nearby tent (who were also very cold) and at dawn thousands of Snow Geese started f lying overhead, all going “wa-wa.” Said the guy to the two kids, “A-hey, look at all the big white ducks.” I’ll remember this till the day I die. Okay, you’ve earned your reward. Why are the wing tips of so many white birds black? To save on wear and tear. White feathers abrade faster than dark ones and wing tips take a beating on birds in f light. The pigment in dark tipped wings makes them stronger so more resistant to f light induced friction. Still don’t know the difference between Snow and Canada Geese and can’t hear the “wa-wa” or the “ah-honk?” Then just head over to the Cape May Bird Observatory, THE place for all your nature needs. The CMBO is located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point (609-884-2736), and is open from 9:30am

to 4:30pm every day but Tuesday. While you’re there, check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars, pick up a free map and schedule of daily walks and programs for the season – yes, we have walks throughout the year, even some in December and January. Take a look at the sighting sheets, scan the bookshelves or pick up a bargain from the used and vintage books section, look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise (including a terrific lithograph done just for the Cape May Bird Observatory), or just browse around. Sit outside on our garden benches and enjoy the birds at the feeders and the view of Lake Lily. If you can’t make it in person, you can also visit us online at BirdCapeMay.org – where birding Cape May is only a click away! Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at the CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.

The Dating Column

T

Stella Dixon’s take on romance on Old Cape Island

HERE’S a battle going on between my head and my heart. But I’m in love, and that’s pretty much the way it goes when you’re in love. If our heads and our hearts were always on the same page, love would be easy. I’ve fallen for a guy who’s really bad on paper. He’s a senior citizen. He’s overly anxious. He’s not overly attractive. Some of you may have seen him in last week’s paper. He’s the mangy, 12-year-old(!) German Shepherd with the big ears who was surrendered to the Cape May County Animal Shelter four months ago. Today, I’m bringing him home, and my head’s telling me that’s a really stupid decision. I’ve had very little experience with big dogs (Rudy is 72 pounds), and no experience with pets that are hard of hearing (did I mention that part?). I also have no money. Hell, I don’t even have a leash which, I’m realizing, the nice people at the shelter asked me to bring today. I live in a house that’s already got two dogs and two cats, and a LOT of stairs (did I mention that Rudy is arthritic?). As I sit here typing this, I’m having a mild panic attack.

But my heart doesn’t care. My heart is the thing that told me to get in the car and drive to the shelter. My heart told me not to walk away from those big, sad eyes looking through the bars of a small, concrete cage. My heart told me to sign the paperwork and pay the eight dollar (eight dollar!) adoption fee. I’m not going to justify this. I’m not going to tell you that, when it comes to love, a person can never go wrong with ignoring her head and following her heart. That would be a lie,

and a clichéd one at that. Of course your heart can steer you wrong. Hearts tell us to hitch our wagons to guys who end up being lazy, demeaning SOBs, and to women who end up being gold-digging princesses. Hearts tell us to give up our jobs, our friends, pieces of ourselves in order to pursue liars and cheaters and frauds. And for all I know, my eight-dollar guy could end up being an eight-dollar disaster who chews through all of my landlord’s furniture and brings home fleas. Or he could die tomorrow; he’s 84 in people years, after all. But if I’ve learned anything, it’s that the heart, no matter how wrong it may be, is always going to win out over the head. There’s no use in fighting it. So go ahead, make a commitment to an obnoxious man or an arthritic dog. Not because it’s some noble thing. Not because it’s brave. And certainly not because following one’s heart is a good idea. (If your head’s telling you that you’re being an idiot, chances are, you’re being an idiot.) Do it because you have no choice. Your heart — bastard organ that it is — will nag you until you do what it says...even if that means bringing home a mangy, arthritic, bad-on-paper guy.

Sleeping Around

S

Zelda Zablonski tests the beds in Cape May’s hotels and inns. This week... Victorian Lace Inn.

LEEPING around Cape May sounds like a pretty awesome gig. I get to experience the fluffiest beds and, even more importantly for a food junkie like me, the fluffiest pancakes of Victorian hotels across town. It’s great... except that usually, I am all alone. These places are positively primed for romance, and I’m showing up not with a lover, but my favorite pair of PJs and a laptop computer. Plates of chocolate-covered strawberries from room service aren’t exactly a plus when you’re without a plus-one. In fact, they can be downright depressing. So imagine my dismay when I showed up to the Victorian Lace Inn. With its cobblestone walks, sweeping ocean views, and cedar-shake exterior, it’s the perfect place to be in love. And it is one of Cape May’s premier honeymoon destinations. Just shoot me. But here’s the thing I learned about Victorian Lace during my delightful overnight visit. There’s so much to comfort you here that a guest doesn’t need a significant other in tow in order to feel warm and fuzzy inside. The inn’s petite owner, Carrie O’Sullivan, greeted me with a plate of chocolate chip cookies in a room decorated with portraits of her family (five kids!), oriental rugs she’s had since before she got married more than thirty years ago, and an adorable golden doodle nearly the size of Carrie herself. But the centerpiece of the room was the chimney staircase which Carrie’s husband, Andy, says acts just like a real fireplace in the way it funnels heat. My room wasn’t at the top of these stairs like all the others. In fact, my room wasn’t anything like all the others. Most of them are decorated in a mix of 19th and 20th century décor. There’s even a Conestoga Wagon armoire inside one of them that breaks down into six pieces held together by wood wedges. This way, it’s easily transported to the west in a wagon — even 19th century ladies knew the importance of a good dresser — and easily set up again as a lady’s wardrobe. But no wagon furniture for me; the O’Sullivans showed me instead to the Cork room. It’s the only modern suite in the place, put on as an addition and designed by Andy himself. Andy is first-generation Irish, and

The romantic Victorian Lace Inn is a charming and popular honeymoon destination, just one short block to the beach here in Cape May all of his rooms are named for counties in Ireland. A sign on the door of the Cork suite reads “cead mile failte,” or “a hundred thousand welcomes.” Inside, there are so many choices that it’s hard to know where to go first. To the little kitchenette area, where more chocolate chip cookies are waiting? To the sun room on the right, with a view of the inn’s beautiful front lawn? Or to the living room, an airy space with four windows, hardwood flooring, and a 36-inch gas fireplace? Wherever you choose, there’s enough open space to have your own personal dance party (you can do that when you’re alone). In the living room, after a long day at the office, I felt immediately calm, due largely, I think, to the mellow yellow walls. (The exact name of this paint is top-secret; Andy mixes several together in order to come up with the warmest color possible.) Lining these walls is nautical-themed artwork, including one piece, “Flame takes the lead,” inspired by a classical sail race. But my attention went right to the bookshelves, custom designed by Andy himself and stocked with everything from Agatha Christie to books on Symbolist Art. There are 231 titles total (when a girl is all by her lonesome, she has time to count such things). There’s also a number of items from the O’Sullivan’s personal collection, including a vintage sand pail and shovel, a hand-painted weather vane, just enough seashells to remind you where you are, and nine wooden ducks.

I selected a book about beekeeping (why not?), and headed upstairs to the second floor. Underneath a burnt sienna ceiling (another of Andy’s paint concoctions, no doubt), I climbed into a deep Jacuzzi tub, where I felt grateful to be alone, for two reasons. One: no one was there to chastise me about eating in the bathroom (I brought some of Carrie’s cookies into the tub), and two: the dualaction Jacuzzi massage was better than any massage I’ve gotten from a man. After my bath, I fell asleep in front of yet another fireplace, on 1200 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets, to the sales pitch of a woman selling purses on the home shopping network (again, there was no one there to keep me from this guilty pleasure). I awoke to check out the view from my bedroom’s deck, from which you can both see and smell the ocean and, most importantly, fully enjoy your company, or your solitude. At 9am sharp, I joined the rest of the inn’s guests in front of the dining room fireplace for a breakfast of pumpkin pancakes, fresh honeydew and sausage. (Carrie makes everything from scratch, including the maple whipped cream, made with real Vermont syrup.) I was grateful to be on my own once again; I’m in it for the fluffy pancakes after all, and I’m no good at sharing food this good. For their hundred thousand welcomes, I can assure you, you will leave Victorian Lace wanting to extend the O’Sullivans a hundred thousand thanks... whether you’re plus a plusone or not.
