Jazz vesper and local jazz legend, Lois Smith, will delight audiences with her sultry singing on December 18 at The First Presbyterian Church

ERRY Dougherty, acoustic bassist and MC of the Cape May Jazz Vespers, says a good jazz musician is a lot like a big dog. “Big dogs don’t bark,” he says, “because they don’t have to.” Decent jazz musicians shouldn’t be showy, either, he explains. Their musical ability should speak for itself.

Under the direction of Bruce Jefferies-Fox, the vespers have been hosting such big-dog talent — vocalists, instrumentalists, and big bands — for nine years. Last month, Terry took over the job and, wanting to fill his predecessors rather large shoes, he’s already set the line-up for the coming year. As always, the vespers will feature a breadth of local acts, as well as out-of-town musicians. And in April, for the first time ever, Lower Township High School’s jazz band and choir will get to experience the vesper stage.

But for now, local jazz enthusiasts are gearing up for the December 18 show, which features big-dog local, Lois Smith. Lois is known for her “sassy, classy” performances, and this show, a mix of gospel, holiday, and altogether heartfelt crooning, will not disappoint.

Like all vesper shows, this will be a nice way to expose younger people to jazz. “It’s an hour long,” Terry says, “not four.

I bring my own son all the time.”

It’s also an affordable outing for the family. The vespers request only a $5 donation, “which is a pretty inexpensive way to hear some great music.” Seeing a band at a bar, Terry says, “can cost the same amount.”

The show will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Cape May, located on Decatur Street, at 3pm. The doors open 45 minutes in advance, because seating tends to fill up quickly.

IN 1916, government officials negotiated the construction of a military base in Cape May. There were significant strategic reasons, mainly the entrance to the Delaware Bay and Delaware River, along with munitions plants positioned along the Delaware River. Ramblings From The Editors

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

hange seems something that gets people the most riled up in this town. (How long did we debate about the new Convention Hall building?) But change is inevitable and, often, a VERY good thing. We’re pleased to report that we’ve been investigating some of the changes about to happen in Cape May (besides the Memorial Day opening of convention hall which, unless you’ve been in a coma, you know all about), and some of them are exciting.

At the forefront are Tai and Julie Menz, who are about to become an even busier young couple than before. Julie, along with her parents and sister, owns Victorious and Pink, while Tai, whose family owns the Inn of Cape May, cooks full-time at the hotel’s restaurant, Aleathea’s. They’re also raising a child, Piper, who just turned one. But this spring — in their spare time — the couple will launch the Cape May Organic Market in the space now occupied by Media In Motion, across from the CVS in West Cape May. It’s the perfect outlet for the couple’s shared passion: healthy living. (The vegetables will come from their own garden, and the eggs from their own chickens. How can you not admire people like that?) “There is a healthconscious movement happening right now,” Julie says, “and Cape May, a communityconscious place, is a great spot for this.”

We think so, too. It’s about time Cape May boarded the organic bandwagon. We’re excited for the healthy eats, of course (including “really cool meats, and vegan and glutenfree items you won’t see in the everyday grocery store”), but we’re equally excited for the organic cleaning and dog-grooming supplies.

As for what’s taking the place of the Lemon Tree restaurant on Liberty Way, your guess is as good as ours. (Well, maybe not quite as good.) We’ve heard that the restaurant will be an upscale pizza spot, and another source says it will be another Lemon Tree-like eatery. Watch this space.

On another note, we’d like to plug our dear friend Phil Broder, who you’ve probably met if you frequent the Cape May dog park. Phil hosts a “Mostly Jewish Christmas Show” on WCFA, 101.5FM every year, and it will be music to your ears if you’re sick of the cheesy holiday tunes you’ve been hearing since Halloween. He’ll play Christmas songs by Bob Dylan, Hannukah music by Pete Seeger, atheist music (“Finally!” says Phil) by Steve Martin, plus songs for New Years, Boxing Day, Kwanzaa, Solstice, and Ramadan, so there really is something for everyone. The show happens on December 20, from 7-8pm.

FINALLY, another plug for the Exit Zero Burns Supper, which, if you have been paying any attention at all, is what you have penciled in on your social calendar for Thursday, January 26. We’ve been talking a lot about change in this column, but this is one event that hasn’t changed. It’s as much rollicking good fun as when it got started eight years ago. Great music, great company, great food and drink, and great-looking men in kilts… same as always. Those of you whose bank accounts took a hit during the holiday shopping season will be happy to know that the price of the Burns Supper hasn’t changed, either. It’s still thirty dollars. Speaking of organic, we’re big fans of homemade, organic Bliss ice cream, run by Mike Boschen and Nicole Pense. They’re moving out of the Carpenter’s Square Mall to Park Boulevard, just along the road from Tai and Julie’s new place, and close to our other weakness, Seaside Cheese — that’s going to be food central for us! Bliss opens in April, but if you can’t wait that long, sign up for their ice cream of the month club and have the good stuff delivered during the off-season. Call them at 609-408-8821.

We’re book people, so we never like to see a bookstore go down, but we like the idea of the Stewart’s Root Beer Emporium that is taking over at the previous Atlantic Books site. Sitting down at a counter to order a hot dog and a shake (or a burger and fries) is a little slice of Americana (and we all know you can’t eat the organic stuff ALL the time).

Property owner and Original Fudge Kitchen honcho Joe Bogle assures us that the emporium is privately owned, and that its opening will not herald some kind of corporate influx.

“The mall,” he says, “will stay exactly the way it is.” We hope so, because we quite like strolling those charming blocks when we just can’t

The Movie Column

Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews “The Descendants”

eorge Clooney is not infallible. The Oscar winner has not always picked the best projects. Last year, his one film, The American, was mediocre at best. Maybe 2009 was Clooney’s best year, with The Fantastic Mr Fox and one of my favorites, Up in the Air. This year, his film offerings are The Ides of March, which was more political cliché than political thriller and his latest, The Descendants, from Alexander Payne, the director who gave us Oscar-winner Sideways. Payne has had a successful yet somewhat overlooked body of work that includes great films, very good films like About Schmidt with Jack Nicolson, and admittedly some not-so-great films like I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, where he probably like to forget he was the screenwriter. My favorite Payne film is one you likely haven’t seen. In a 2006 compilation of short films entitled Paris, Je T’aime, his film “14e Arrondissement” was truly one of my favorites.

his closet. All of this is set against the backdrop of a candid look at the Hawaiian landscape, of which King and his cousins own a substantial piece.

The script of this film was heavy with expository dialogue. There is a lot of lag between moments that are truly moving but never inspiring. The film is well directed and well written with a cast that is very good, and they give performances that are… well… very good. In the end, you want this film to rise from very good to exceptional. While it never gets there, it’s still better than most other films in its class.

Review At A Glance MUST SEE: If you’ve loved every relationship movie or George Clooney movie you’ve ever seen. TAKE A LOOK: If you’re looking for very good film that never dips below acceptable drama but never rises to masterpiece status as well. SKIP IT: If you don’t like Clooney or quality relationship films (oh, and you’re in a minority if you don’t like Clooney).

Merry Deathmas

“Ho ho ho... ho?” chapter five of Terry O’Brien’s frighteningly good new short story December 23, Early Morning.

F

or a moment or two I was sure Tim had spiked my coffee. There, standing on my little front deck, stood Santa Claus, all twinklyeyed and white-bearded, with little wire-rimmed glasses, smoking a pipe.

“Good morning,” he said. He didn’t sound jolly, but who does at 5am?

“Good… morning,” I replied.

In the swirling flurries I saw the black coat and brown mittens and realized it wasn’t the real Santa, just a guy who bore a strong resemblance. I tried to hide my disappointment.

“Can I help you?”

At that moment a CMPD squad car pulled into my driveway and parked. From it emerged Detective Ike Curtis. He put a hand on his hat against the breeze, his worn tan overcoat fluttered like a beige flag.

“Mr Nicholas,” Curtis said to the man on my porch. “I see you’ve met Mr Whitaker.”

“Only briefly,” the presumed Mr Nicholas replied.

Curtis said, “Any chance we can go inside?

It’s colder than my wife’s shoulder out here.”

I’d met Detective Curtis twice in the last 24 hours, each time there was a cutting remark against his wife. I assumed things were not good at home.

“Sure,” I said and ushered them in.

I pulled a couple of extra chairs out and now, with my partner Tim Demarco and his friend Lionel Jeffries already in there, my office felt a little tight. Everyone sat, introductions were made, the last being the Santa-like Mr Nicholas.

“This is Mr Klaus Nicholas,” Detective Curtis told us. “An old friend and someone whose expertise I thought might come in handy.”

Everyone thought it but I was the first to ask, “Expertise on what?”

“Why, Christmas, my dear boy,” Nicholas answered with a chuckle. Detective Curtis laughed along with him.

“Oh yeah…” Tim said, something dawning on him.

“I get it,” Lionel followed.

I said, “Well when any of you feel like filling me in…’

I always get testy when I feel like I’m missing something. I get testy often.

“My friend,” Nicholas started, “the methods of these murders is quite clear once you put some thought into it.”

There, standing on my little front deck, stood Santa Claus, all twinkly-eyed and white-bearded, with little wire-rimmed glasses, smoking a pipe.

Wow. A backhanded slap from Santa. I stewed a bit.

“Cut the kid a break,” Curtis said, “he’s had a long couple of days.”

I nodded at him.

“Of course,” he continued, “I did not mean to offend. But let’s look at the facts, shall we?

James Rappaport; killer enters through the chimney. Ms. Rosensweig; stomped to death by eight horses attached to a sleigh. And Charles Sutcliffe, the explosive that wiped out him, his wife and his son originated at the fireplace, where one might traditionally hang a stocking with care.”

After a moment I said, “Makes sense.’

Curtis nodded, pulled a cigarette from his raincoat and lit up. I pulled an ashtray from my desk drawer.

Lionel leaned in. “What kind of explosive?”

Curtis shook his head. “We think something homebrewed. No indication so far of any refined machinery, no exotic chemical compounds have pinged the radar.”

“We also,” Nicholas continued, “think he may not have meant to kill everyone in the house.”

“Right,” Curtis continued. “The first two murders were very specific. If he wanted to kill multiples, and assuming his point is to

wipe out the city council, as seems painfully obvious at this point, so obvious I’m sure even you’ve figured it out by now…”

I slouched. “… he simply could have waited for Janice Rappaport to come home the other night and did both of them then and there.”

“He’s got a message,” Tim interjected.

Curtis agreed, “Exactly.”

“This may seem like a stupid question to all of you genius crimefighters,” I said evenly, “but at this point how can we even be sure this has all been done by the same person?”

“That,” Curtis, “is not a stupid question at all.”

I sat up.

Curtis continued. “We found manure stains in the carpet at Sutcliffe’s, same pattern and boot size as the soot prints at the Rappaport’s. Ties all three together. It’s only been a few hours and nothing’s been 100% matched yet, but we think it will.’

I agreed. “Certainly strong enough evidence to move forward.”

Curtis nodded. “Any my friend Klaus here is an expert on all things Christmas. Tell them, Klaus.”

“I’ll spare you the details, but since a young age I’ve been fascinated with Christmas mythology. I’ve spent my adult life studying Christmas. Even in college, though I am a lettered English scholar, I ostensibly graduated as a Christmas major.”

“So what’d you do?” I asked, “Open a Yuletide repair shop?”

Klaus laughed heartily. “No, my boy… I understand your cynicism. And no, there was not much of a living to be made for a Santa scholar. So I did the next best thing; I opened a Christmas store, maybe you’ve heard of it; Winterland?”

I had heard of it. “Little place on Washington Street?”

Nicholas nodded, “Yes, it’s small, but lucrative, enough to afford me a comfortable life in Cape May.” Everyone nodded, knowing what that meant. Money. Lots of it.

“The shop is right across from the police station,” Curtis confirmed. “It’s how we met.

Must be 20 years now. We’ve been drinking buddies ever since.”

“Neat.” Tim offered.

This all sounded hunky dory, but something wasn’t sitting right. “Not hard to figure a guy named Klaus Nicholas ends up in the Christmas racket.”

Nicholas laughed, “Of course, that’s not my birth name, but it is the name on my birth certificate. Klaus Nicholas is a very German name. I was born of Italian parentage. You see I changed my name after college…”

I said, incredulously, “You changed your name to Klaus Nicholas after college?”

Klaus was getting red. “Well, you see, it was… my life’s work… my business…”

“We can get into all that later,” Detective Curtis interrupted and butted his smoke out angrily. “Right now, we’ve got more important things to worry about.”

Tim said, “Damn right. Travis, stop being a dick. Klaus, thank you for helping.”

Hmm, must have been really bad for Tim to call me out like that. Still, I figured one of us ought to vet the guy.

Curtis said, “We’ve got his MO pegged and his next two presumptive targets in custody. He either must have known we’d find his trail or doesn’t care. Which means…”

“He’s confident,” I finished. “Or crazy.”

Curtis said, “Or both.”

Klaus said, “Ho ho ho.”

I’m the opposite of that guy. Might explain why I have so few guy friends.

Tony and Shawn would be relieving the guard detail set up at the safe house after a briefing with Detective Curtis.

We had two main objectives; keep Janice Rappaport and Reverend Milo Binkley safe, and to brainstorm other avenues of attack the Santa killer might come up with and head them off. At this, Klaus Nicholas proved very helpful. His wealth of arcane Santa knowledge far surpassed the rest of ours. Detective Curtis was wise to bring him in.

Lionel and Tim ran out for coffee and other supplies, Tony and Shawn left for the safe house, Detective Curtis went back to CMPD HQ to follow up on the lab work, while we civilians did our volunteer thing.

and sighed like a man who had a whole speech worked out in his head but decided to let it go. I knew that feeling.

“It’s okay, my boy,” he said. “I’m an intruder in your group. It’s smart to push my buttons. I bear no ill will.”

“I appreciate it,” I said. “And you’re right, I was just feeling you out. And truth be told, this ‘group’ of mine is all of about 36 hours old, so it’s not like you’re breaking up the ’27 Yankees.

It was wrong of me to push so hard.”

Nicholas said. “It’s behind us.”

We shook hands. I resisted the urge to hug him. I saw the yellow legal pad on the small table he was using as his home base.

“What are you working on?”

He moved quickly and grabbed the pad.

“Just working up a list of names, trying to make myself familiar with everyone involved.

I’ve got a lot to catch up on.”

He stuck the pad under an arm and went back to the table.

For a few minutes we went through the motions of organizing the office. I would work at my desk, Nicholas at his small table, Tim would need to set up on a TV tray in the bedroom (call me a dick, will you…), and Lionel

Yes, it was sometime around daybreak that Detective Curtis thanked me for volunteering my time to the case. I hadn’t recalled volunteering for anything, and as it was every winter, my business was in off-season survival crisis mode, so I couldn’t really afford it. My conscience was too righteous to let me bill the time to Janice Rappaport, but neither would it let me walk away from this aspect of the case. Some people volunteer, some people have volunteerism thrust upon them. I would have to bask in the warmth that catching the killer would provide.

I was setting up my laptop when it dawned on me that Nicholas and I were now alone.

There was palpable tension in the office as he made notes on a yellow legal pad.

I suck at confrontation. You wouldn’t think that of a guy who’d bagged a few killers in the last few years but, well, here we are. For me, it’s easier to face down a mob with guns trying to eat your brains than have a oneon-one conversation with someone you’ve recently offended.

“Mr Nicholas. I’d like to apologize for my comments before. I was out of line.”

Again he wiped the glasses. How dirty could they be? He looked at me with shiny eyes

Tim and Lionel returned, we all sipped coffee, noshed on bagels and donuts, and tossed around ideas. Around 3 o’clock we broke for a late lunch-slash-early-dinner.

Midday wasn’t an ideal time to commit murder, but fortunately for the killer, on December 23 very few eyebrows raised when Santa strolled through town with a sack full of goodies. From his home nearby he walked down the Washington Street Mall, plain as day. People saw him, recognized him, waved heartily, all joyous and full of festivity.

It had taken him all of 90 seconds on the computer to suss out the location of the CMPD safe house where his last two targets were being hidden. He knew they would catch on to him, but it wouldn’t matter.

Nothing could stop Santa. Didn’t they read the stories?

At the end of Washington he made a left on Perry, passed the Carpenter’s Square Mall

and continued on toward the Star Motel. His targets were in rooms 8 and 10, on the second level, but first, a stop into the office.

“Ho ho ho!” he cried as the door bells jangled.

Officer Shawn Austin, in plainclothes and looking for all the world like a motel concierge behind the front desk, came to attention, his hand going to his his gun. But upon seeing Santa he relaxed and sat back.

“Good afternoon, Santa.”

Shawn went back to eyeing the camera monitors under the lip of the counter.

Shawn absently said, “What have you got for us, Santa? Coffee, I hope…”

Santa replied, “Oh, I’ve got something much better…”

He placed the sack on the floor where Austin could not see it and took out the log. It was affixed to a handle and adorned with several metal spikes. He gripped the handle with both hands, torqued his body and swung it as hard as he could.

Officer Shawn Austin did not even have time to draw his weapon.

Santa stepped over him and grabbed the keys to rooms 8 and 10. ***** In room 8, the right-reverend Milo Binkley said a quick grace over his soup. He was a boyish 67 and enjoyed God, the church, his flock, and How I Met Your Mother, which he thought hid a wholesome message behind its bawdy façade. And that Neil Patrick Harris was a real hoot.

But none of that mattered when the crazed man in the Santa suit entered the room and began bludgeoning him with a devilish Yule log. As the blows rained down and his life neared its end, he became profoundly disappointed that he would never know who the mother was.

As all became fog, he heard the sounds of a struggle, raised voices, the deadly log striking home. The unconscious body of

The door opened, the killer left, Milo Binkley died. ***** Janice Rappaport was not a stupid woman. At the first sounds of human struggle coming from next door she knew they had been found. Quickly, she slipped on her shoes, grabbed her bag, and went for the door. She threw it open and, in her panic, nearly toppled over the railing to the parking area 10-feet below. She righted herself and, driven by fear, made for the stairs, the only route to which was past room 8. She screamed and sprinted, broke for freedom. Past the door. Her heart leapt. She was going to make it.

The door crashed open.

“No!” Pain knifed into her leg as the spike-laden Yule log plunged into her right calf, snapping her to a halt. The second blow landed on her left thigh, flesh and muscle tore on the spikes. Stars burst in her eyes and she fell to the ground.

Above her, the demonic man in the Santa suit raised the weapon for the kill.

“This is what you get for freezing me out, you bitch!”

He raised the Yule log.

“Please…”

A shot rang out. Santa stopped, a smoldering black hole in his right shoulder. A second shot rang and knocked the weapon from his hands.

At the top of the steps, covered in blood, Officer Shawn Austin lay, smoke rising from his weapon. Janice pulled herself along the narrow balcony toward him, awaiting a death blow that never came.

Santa was gone.

She made it to the fallen policeman and cradled his ruined head as sirens wailed.

“Hang in there,” she said.

He gripped her arm.

“Claus…”

“I know,” Janice told him.

“The ambulance is almost here.”

But she knew he was dead.

The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone

OME Cape Mayniacs strive to be “book smart.” These are the folks who pontificate over the boldness of every bottle of Malbec on the wine list. They explain to their dinner companions the exotic vegetables on the dinner menu — what they taste like, what climate they thrive in, and the religious customs of the tribesmen who farm there.

Other folks would rather be “street smart,” like the guy who can’t tell a Pinot gris from a Pinot noir, doesn’t know the difference between sushi and sashimi, and doesn’t care. He wouldn’t know a julienned vegetable if it hit him in the head, but God help the man who moves in on his lady at the bar, or the server who overcharges for appetizers. This guy doesn’t miss a thing.

Then there are people like me. Most days, we’re not striving to be any kind of smart; quite the opposite, in fact. Most days, we’re striving to be dumb. Well, not really dumb, per se, but able to act the part.

Playing dumb is an awesome asset, an ability they should teach in primary school,

along with coloring inside the lines and multiplication.

I use this skill all the time in the restaurant. When a male customer wants to educate me on the whiskey he’s drinking, for example, it’s better not to let on that I’ve already suffered through an hour-long class devoted to this very subject. Instead, it helps the man’s ego — and my tip — if I pretend to be fascinated. “Tell me that part about single malts again,” I say, twirling my ponytail in feigned interest.

When an unruly guest spends an entire evening bossing around the staff and generally bah-humbugging all over the place, playing dumb can be extremely satisfying.

“Oh, that’s right,” I say, “you did ask for more coffee. How silly of me to forget!”

It’s not just customers who bring out the ignoramus in me; playing dumb also comes in handy when dealing with coworkers. A good friend of mine, the restaurant’s married bar-back, once got sloshed and tried to put the (very sloppy) moves on me. “I want to kiss you,” he slurred. “Yep,” I said, “Just like a brother kisses a sister.”

He told me I wasn’t getting it, so I twirled my ponytail in feigned confusion and said, “Getting what?” My bar-back friend now thinks I’m the densest waitress alive, but at least things weren’t awkward and he wasn’t embarrassed in the morning.

It’s true that waiting tables doesn’t require an expensive education or fancy degree. (Many of my tables want to know what moves I’m making toward having a “real” profession someday.) But waitressing, more than plenty of other jobs I’ve had, requires a great deal of smarts — book smarts, street smarts and, perhaps most importantly, knowing when to be a prize idiot.

The Cape May Crossword

son can only make us happier. You need to be okay with yourself, you need to be happy with you, not to get all squishy about it. The man that comes along who is meant for you will just be the icing on the (pistachio praline) cake.

Dear Answer Lady I got my wife a great Christmas gift, and I’m pretty happy with myself about it. But, as usual, I’m stumped for stocking stuffers. I usually just get a couple of lottery tickets and a little airplane bottle of vodka, but they’re never met with much enthusiasm. When the Answer Lady was but a girl, she was mystified by the things her dad would put into her mother’s stocking – soaps, lotions, cologne. Now that the Answer Lady is a fully grown – nay, even an elderly woman, she can fully understand and appreciate the logic of this. A lady’s Christmas stocking should be stuffed with little luxuries she wouldn’t dream of getting for herself. These vary from woman to woman, of course – one woman’s L’Erbolario from Italian Garden is another woman’s Prasad incense from Good Scents – and another’s Swiss army knife. When stuffing a stocking, try to think about what she actually likes, not what you’d like her to like.

here’s nothing wrong with eating alone. I do it all the time, not just out of necessity but because sometimes it’s nice to enjoy a meal in solitude. As for microwave cooking, well, sometimes you’re in a hurry and those Trader Joe’s veggie corn dogs ARE pretty good. So I’m not thrilled that those couple-centric bigots at Publishers Weekly have decided that the worst book of all time is Marie Smith’s Microwave Cooking For One. It’s surprisingly difficult to cook for one. Food isn’t packaged that way. Except for Lunchables and most of Chef Boyardee’s oeuvre, food comes in bigger portions.

Salad for one? Sorry, you can’t buy a quarter head of lettuce. Having a cookout? Good luck buying a half pound of ground beef, two buns, or a trio of hot dogs. Not to mention the condiments; that jar of mustard is likely to last six months, by which time it resembles a science experiment. Even a loaf of bread becomes a penicillin factory before I can make enough sandwiches to use it all up. So, I’m either resigned to wasting a

lot of perfectly good food (and I can hear my mother’s voice, reminding me of the starving children in Africa, every time I toss out something uneaten), or filling my freezer with leftovers.

And lest you lump me as a stereotypical bachelor ordering take-out and microwaving everything, I really enjoy cooking. I inherited my grandmother’s cookware – they don’t make ’em like her soup pot from the Old Country anymore

– and I put it to good use. My Chicken Cordon Bleu is fairly tasty, especially if I have three guests to help eat it. I make a mean jambalaya, usually enough to last me for half a week, if my intestines can handle it. My father’s recipe for blackened chicken is fantastic, if I can figure out how to cut the spice mixture down by 80%. I’m not trying to feed a family of five, or even a dinner party of four. Our society just doesn’t make it easy to cook for one.

Know what Love The Cook doesn’t sell? Dining companions! Sadly, many of our otherwise fine local restaurants treat solo diners like lepers. I’ve been seated at tables that were practically inside a bathroom stall, treated badly by servers who assume that I’ll be leaving a small tip, and been hurried out the door by hostesses who want to use the table for bigger groups.

What Cape May really needs is a “table share” kiosk on the mall, where solo diners can get together, form into bigger groups, and then pursue dining equality. Time for us to Occupy Cape May! Or at least its restaurants.

The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

ever trust a reindeer. Oh, they may look cute and cuddly, but that is a product of Hollywood: the reindeer I know are as downright nasty and hard as Santa Claws himself.

Yes, Claws. What, you really thought it was Claus? My poor dear, you are so innocent and sweet. No, in the Old Days, Santa was called “Claws” for good reason, and his reindeer were fearsome. Rudolph IS known as the red-nosed reindeer, I grant you that, but did you not wonder why? I shall enlighten you, is what I shall do… huddle close, and bolt the door, put a log on the fire…

First of all, what are the odds of a nice, fat old man carrying a fortune in toys and consumer goods, towed by a bunch of harmless herbivores, NOT being pulled from his sleigh and bludgeoned in the snow? None! And the number of ne’er-dowells who would have cut off their OWN hand for a flying sleigh, let alone Santa’s hands? So, Santa was ready: his gloves were red and fluffy, but concealed two sets of retractable steel claws, not unlike those

of that Wolverine character in the moving pictures they used to show at the Beach Theatre until some oaf bulldozed it. And the red outfit was to hide the blood of those unfortunates who tried to mug him, you should know: what horror for small children to see a blood-soaked Santa easing down the chimney in the wee small hours? And the reindeer? Why, they are wild, vicious carnivores, who will track a man for a week to trample and eat him. Why do you think we leave out a carrot as a “snack for Santa’s

reindeer” on Christmas Eve? It’s because a carrot symbolizes a finger, is why, and it sates the reindeers’ appetite for the crunch of a bone as they snap off the digits of anyone in range. Santa’s reindeer, too, are specially trained by Lapland Ninjas, as assassins and warhorses, so they can outfight anything from local thugs to hungry polar bears. THAT is why Rudolph has a red nose: from blood, and not his own.

Oh, these were lessons learned the hard way: Santas (oh come ON, you didn’t think it was always the same one? Successful candidates for that job used to have an average life expectancy once in the job, of two days.) were not lasting long, and there were perpetually elf commando rescue teams out hunting for Santas’ remains at various ambush sites around the world. Then came the claws and the killer reindeer and the anti-personnel mines hung on the sides of the sleigh, and electronic countermeasures.

And so WHO is the current Santa?

Modesty forbids… but I advise you to show some gratitude, or Rudolph might pay you a visit.

ape May is all dressed up for Christmas, and a holiday tour is the perfect way to see all the festive finery. Cape May’s trolley tours offer an opportunity for the whole family to see the sights. Toddlers and grandparents can share a seat and marvel at Christmas in Cape May, even when both are too tired to walk around anymore. Parents of young children enjoy the chance to sit still without driving. (The smartest parents send the kids and grandparents on the tour alone while they help Santa with some discreet purchases at the Toy Shop.) The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts (MAC) offers a variety of tours for the season. Skeptics and true believers will all enjoy Santa’s Trolley Ride, which features stories and songs with Mrs Claus, and ends with a treat from Santa at the Carriage House. All seats are $8. Songs are also a part of the Holiday Lights Tour, which teaches about Victorian Christmas traditions as it travels through Cape May’s Historic District. All seats cost $10.

Those who are looking for the spirit of Christmas will find it on the Ghosts of

Christmas Past Tour for $10. Your guide is an actor who tells ghost stories, blending spooky with the sparkle of the streets. The Physick Family Christmas Tour starts with a trolley ride and ends with a visit to the Physick Estate, where you’ll meet actors portraying members of the Physick household during the 1890s. Adults tickets cost $18; $10 for

children. A similar tour is the two-hour Spirit of Christmas Tour, which adds a visit to the Carriage House for holiday refreshments.

If you don’t mind a little walking, consider a Lamplighter Christmas Tour.

During this self-guided evening tour, you’ll enjoy traditional hot beverages and cookies, visit five decorated inns, and visit the Carriage House Gallery at the Emlen Physick Estate for an exhibit, “An Old-Fashioned Christmas: Holiday Traditions Through The Years.”

Or consider the Christmas Candlelight House Tour on Saturdays from 5:30 to 8:30pm. This tour features at least a dozen stops per night, Christmas carolers, strolling musicians, hospitality centers, admission to the Physick Estate and Carriage House Gallery and – a crucial element on chilly December nights – continuous shuttle service on heated trolleys. Most tours are about 30 minutes long. You must buy your ticket before you board the trolley. The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

ell folks, it’s December, and that means that fall is officially over.

Okay, technically winter doesn’t begin until December 21, but November 30 is the traditional last day of the Hawk Count in Cape May. The counter goes home.

Daily tabulation end.

Hawks stop migrating.

One of the above is not true. Not to keep you guessing, it’s the reference to migrating hawks. Fact is, hawks do not stop migrating on November 30. They continue to migrate into December, even early January.

Why end the count on November 30 then? Because while migration continues, it becomes more spotty after November.

It takes a good migratory condition to get a good migratory push as the migration draws to a close.

Like the one occurring now as I write these words. Clear skies that give migrating hawks the thermal lift they need to get aloft. Strong northwest winds that push

migrants toward the coast and then drive them to the tip of the peninsula.

If I didn’t have a writing deadline to meet, I’d be down there right now. Standing under a sky filled with Red-tailed Hawks and Red-shouldered Hawks. Savoring the odd adult male Northern Harrier and Bald Eagle and hoping for Golden Eagle.

Watch platform when temperatures are in the 30s and winds are topping out at 30 mph. But the rewards are ample.

This December seems absolutely perfect to enjoy some great hawk migrations.

November was mild. Winds not conducive to migration. There are lots of birds still up north who may, even at this late date, decide that it’s time to get out of dodge before it’s too late.

One of the big drivers of late season migration is snow. When the first good snowfall blankets New England and New York state (i.e. the kind that stays), lots of birds bail out. Head south.

It’s not the temperatures, but food availability. A blanket of snow is hard to hunt over. Rodents are hidden so many hawks go below the standing snow pack. This means South Jersey where standing snow is the exception, not the norm.

Other December migrants include owls: most notably Snowy Owl, which seems to be heading south in good numbers

Bird Droppings ? From Page 97 this year. Snowy owls are mostly coastal, both as breeders in the arctic and as wintering species. It’s been a few years since Cape May has been subjected to a good Snowy Owl year. This could be it.

What is the latest raptor migrant I’ve ever seen? It was actually an adult male Northern Harrier heading out over the Delaware Bay on January 1. The winds were blowing a gale. The bird was flying pretty nearly sideways.

But despite the winds, and the risk, the ice-colored bird just headed out. Next stop?

Delaware (or Bermuda). Don’t really know where the bird landed.

Ah, December. Lots of birding opportunity. Good chances of encountering some really neat birds.

The best news is – no crowds. All those fair weather hawk watchers have gone home to their burrows. They won’t emerge until spring.

Which comes pretty early in Cape May. Heck, you can see the first northbound hawks in February. Not even enough time to lose your raptor identification edge.

Northern Harrier have been spotted on the Delaware Bay as late as January 1 May Bird Observatory, THE place for all your nature needs. The CMBO is located at 701 East Lake Drive, overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point (609-884-2736), and is open from 9:30am to 4:30pm every day but Tuesday. While you’re there, check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars, pick up a free map and schedule of daily walks and programs for the season – yes, we have walks throughout the year even some in December and January – take a look at the sighting sheets to check what’s being seen, scan the bookshelves or pick up a bargain from the vintage books section, look at some of

the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise (including a terrific lithograph done just for the Cape May Bird Observatory), or just browse around. Enjoy the birds at the feeders and the view of Lake Lily from inside.

I heard that Seymore himself will actually be leading a three-day workshop in January on wintering hawks, eagles, and owls; a weekend of raptor-watching and learning. Past years have featured a Golden Eagle hunting Snow Geese in the company of several Bald Eagles, plus pointblank Eastern Screech Owls, Rough-legged Hawks of both color morphs, and hunting Short-eared and Great Horned Owls. The Dating Column

Stella Dixon’s take on romance on Old Cape Island

HEY say that beautiful women get away with murder. They don’t get speeding tickets. They don’t pay for drinks. They can flirt their way into a job (or out of a job, as the case may be.) Barbie dolls rule the world.

But so does Ken. I know because I met him the other night. Turns out, beautiful men get away with murder, too.

Ken — I’m just going to go ahead and call him that — is a dreamboat, a real live version of the world’s hunkiest doll. Sandy hair, broad shoulders, he is the best looking 30-something man I’ve ever seen in Cape May. Perhaps this is why he has women fawning over him all the time. At least, I’m assuming he does. Otherwise, I doubt he would have called me “dude” nine times over the course of our date at The Merion Inn. That’s right: dude.

As in, “It’s nice to meet you, dude,” and “Where should we sit, dude?” and “You getting food, dude?” It’s not that I have anything against being called dude; my 15-year-old cousin calls me that all the time. But he’s 15. And he’s my cousin.

The dude thing I could have found endear-

ing. I could also have found endearing the fact that Ken still lives with his parents, and that, after I ordered a glass of wine, his response was, “Oooh, fancy-shmancy.” There are a lot of things I’ll write off as endearing, dear reader, for a guy who looks like freaking Adonis.

But eventually — right around the point that Ken whipped out his iPhone to show me a “freakin’ hilarious” picture of the cops chasing a streaker across the field at a baseball game — I could no longer deny the utter lack of chem-

istry between us. Don’t get me wrong; I love a good streaker as much as the next girl, just not on a first date. Of course, I’d also rather not discuss Mr Hanky the Christmas Poo on a first date, but Ken doesn’t share the feeling.

By the end of the night, I’d somehow managed to become unattracted to one of Cape May’s most attractive men. The fact that I picked up the tab — the whole tab — was just icing on the cake.

They say that God (or Buddha or Allah or whoever) giveth…and that he taketh away.

Which means few people get it all – looks, brains, AND social awareness. Cape May is teeming with hobbits who are beautiful on the inside, and idiots who are smoking hot on the outside. Maybe expecting to find a guy who’s got it all is just asking too much.

Or maybe not. With great beauty comes great responsibility, after all — the responsibility not to be a nincompoop just because you can. I’m sure there are plenty of women who wouldn’t mind picking up Ken’s half of the bill, but I am not one of them. This Christmas season, I’m hoping for a different kind of doll.

Sleeping Around

therapist once told me that the relationship problems I was having were likely due to the fact that I’m a first-born child, and therefore “used to having my needs met without having to ask for anything.” This makes total sense to me, particularly in explaining my love affair with Congress Hall. If you’ve got a need that isn’t being met here, you may just be too needy for your own damn good. Congress Hall is like a self-contained universe, a place to eat, drink, and be merry, to shop, to have a little workout (24-hour fitness center!), a spa for that mani-pedi, and a place to lay your head, all under one absurdly impressive roof. Who needs more than that?

When I checked in around 3:30, the place, always stunning, was looking particularly grand in its holiday finery. Huge candy canes lined the retail hall, as a model train chugged around the Christmas tree in the lobby, and a “real” train chugged around the veranda outside. The courteous, efficient Neil checked me in, and I was off to room 202, now my new favorite place on earth. A soothing Tiffany blue, with white furniture, comfy salmon-colored armchairs, black accent pieces, a muted multi-colored rug below my tootsies, the room is decorated to complement rather than compete with the view. And that bed! It was a king-sized, down-ensconced haven from the world, and I flung myself upon it for a business call, making it that much easier to bear. And clean! The place fairly sparkled. I would have cheerfully eaten off of any flat surface in the room. The bathroom was spacious and outfitted with fluffy white towels, and the soap, shampoo, and lotion provided were kicked up a notch by virtue of being Aveda products. Best of all, a bathtub, which I parked myself in immediately.

The view was breathtaking, and I couldn’t resist opening the window and little apron door to step out onto my balcony, despite the chilly December temperatures.

On the veranda and lawn below, Congress Hall’s Winter Wonderland was in full swing.

An enormous Christmas tree, winking up at me in the dusky afternoon light, anchored the lawn, where Santa’s sleigh awaited his arrival. The red-and-white striped tented shopping village was bustling with holiday shoppers, and Christmas music filled the air – I literally could have sat there all afternoon (and evening). Alas, my stomach rumbled, and my reservation (with my tall, dark and handsome date) at the Blue Pig Tavern was

Night view from my balcony at Congress Hall. That’s right. a while away. So, a quick hot chocolate from Tommy’s Folly was in order. Okay, and a Blue Pig cookie – a girl’s gotta eat. I found an obliging rocker on the veranda and relaxed in the waning light. Then I was refreshed and ready for browsing – and there’s so much fun stuff here! Congress Hall isn’t your run-of-the-mill hotel, and Tommy’s Folly isn’t a run-of-the-mill shop. Beautiful clothing, exquisite jewelry, and very cool Congress Hall souvenirs, including the everpopular stuffed Blue Pig plush toy – one of which I promptly bought (and I’m keeping it). Across the hall is Tommy’s Folly HOME, outfitted with tasteful and unique home furnishings, including the linens and towels in the guest rooms, should you find you can’t part with them… it could happen.

I met tall, dark and handsome in the Brown Room for a pre-dinner drink with Stephen and Luci, bartenders extaordinaire.

The bar was lively with a Friday evening crowd, the fire crackling and the intoxicating sound of laughter filling the room. We hastened to the Blue Pig Tavern at the appointed time and were immediately ushered to a cozy, candle-lit table. The food and service, courtesy of the lovely Jenna, were both excellent. I had the soup of the day, TDH had

Caesar salad, followed by the Steak and Cake (filet mignon and crab cake) for him, and filet mignon for me, perfectly cooked and accompanied by the best broccoli I’ve ever tasted. We asked for to-go boxes in order to save room for dessert. Although I miss the pistachio praline cake from last winter’s dessert menu (and I’ll say it every chance I get), the chocolate cake with salted caramel is now a close second favorite.

Back to the Brown Room (twist my arm), which was now jumping, courtesy of live music and refugees from the ballroom wedding drifting in, we briefly discussed the idea of walking into town, but not surprisingly, no one seemed interested in leaving the building. Upon returning to our room, we debated a room service breakfast, but decided against being disturbed. Instead we got coffee (okay, and another Blue Pig cookie) from Tommy’s Folly and enjoyed them in our room, watching kite-flyers on the beach and early-morning runners on the promenade; about as enjoyable a start to a Saturday as I’ve enjoyed in a very long time.

The peerless Congress Hall – needs met.
