The Bethlehem Steel Corporation maintained a testing facility for weapons and explosives on Higbee Beach. They had agreements to produce shells and other weaponry for a handful of nations, including the US. Once a particular group of shells were ready to be tested, a special train would bring the munitions to Cape May. The shell or other explosive to be tested would be loaded onto a rail car and pulled onto the beach, where it would be detonated. – Ben Miller

Ramblings From The Editors

A

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

s you might have gathered from the cover, a seal found its way onto the beaches of Cape May this weekend. The harbor seal was spotted lying above the shoreline on First Avenue beach, where a small group of people, including Nancy Campbell, gathered and snapped some pictures. According to Nancy, some of the onlookers were under the impression that the seal was “beached” and thought it was in need of some help.

One gentleman made his way toward the ocean, clapping his hands. Nancy said it seemed that the seal followed the man’s clapping and returned to the ocean.

Although our knowledge of seals is limited to National Geographic magazine and our collection of Planet Earth DVDs, there seemed something odd about the idea of a seal “beached” – like a whale or dolphin might. After all, there is plenty of footage of seals frolicking about in the sand before they take to the surf and are beset by Killer Whales. We called the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine, NJ and talked to their director, Bob Schoelkopf.

Bob says it’s not rare to find seals on Jersey beaches. In fact, there is a colony of up to 180 harbor seals residing in an undisclosed beach along the Jersey coast.

So, what should people do the next time they see a seal sitting on the beach?

“Leave them alone and stay at least 50 feet away – don’t bring them food, don’t try to touch them and don’t try to lead them to the water,” warned Bob. “If they look like they might need help, call our 24-hour hotline at 609-266-0538.”

What’s more, Bob says that the man



who came close to the animal and started clapping was in violation of the Marine Mammal Protection Act and could have faced a $25,000 fine and up to two years in prison. “He didn’t guide it to the water – he scared it away.”

Calling all chili connoisseurs: this Saturday, March 12 marks the Cape May Chili and Chowder Challenge, where local chefs and home-style cooks will compete for bragging rights, trophies and prizes. The event will be held in Congress Hall’s Grand Ballroom, and for just $5 you can sample the finest chili and chowder around. Guests are invited to vote for the best chili in both categories, and celebrity judges Dan Skeldon and Dan Carrigan from NBC 40 will be on hand to provide their professional opinion (they’re not food critics, but they sure are photogenic).

This event runs from 1-5pm, and proceeds from ticket sales will benefit Cape May food banks. If you think your chili has what it takes to burn the competition, contact Doreen Talley at 609-884-5508 to enter the running.



You may notice an increase in the number of shaven heads in Cape May after March 22, but it’s no fashion trend.

Lower Cape May Regional High School teachers, staff and students are having their St Baldrick’s fundraiser: each shaved head raises money for childhood cancer research.

Teacher TJ Belasco informed us that a total of 13 teachers and staff members and 20 students will shave their heads on March 22 in solidarity with cancer-stricken kids.

Last year’s event raised over $12,000, and Belasco is optimistic about surpassing their $5,000 goal this year. “The great thing about St Baldrick’s is that every single penny goes to research,” TJ tells us. “We also want to drive home the idea of helping others. It’s one thing to teach our kids to be better students, but you really want to teach them to be better people.”

Best thing about the job: For me it’s got to be the hours. I am so not a morning person – I sleep until the crack of noon.

What do you recommend here? I definitely have to go with the wings, you can’t go wrong with them here. Maybe with a cold Rolling Rock.

What’s the best cocktail? I came up with a great one last summer. It’s called the Summer Blast, and it’s Stoli Razz, Peach Schnapps, lemonade and cranberry juice.

What’s your other dream job? I’ve always had a major interest in architecture, so I’d probably be an architect.

Favorite thing about Cape May: Just the summer in general – the weather, the energy, the beach. I’m a major beach bum at heart and I love to be outside.

Angel Salazar will be one of the comedians featured at PAL’s Comedy Night Social.

he Police Athletic League will host a Comedy Night Social on March 25 from 7-10pm at the West Cape May Fire Hall. We spoke with the event coordinator, Officer Tony Genaro, who tells us this has been a sell-out event for the organization for the past several years.

“I wanted to do something different from the usual beefand-beer fundraiser,” Officer Genaro said. “The first year was a little rough. It was held in the old convention center, and I was using a different booking agency back then. I got five comedians for $1,000. The lesson there: you get what you pay for – it was terrible. There’s nothing worse than 300 people in one room, not laughing. Now I pay more money for fewer comics, but these guys are professionals, so it’s worth it. This year we have Angel Salazar and Bill Garagan. Not only do you get a bunch of people together for a great cause, but there’s a certain electricity in the room when everyone is laughing, so that’s a bonus. Plus, Lucky Bones is providing the food,

beer and wine, and they always do such a great job for us.”

Tickets for the event are $35 online, $40 at the door, and Tony wanted to stress that tickets to this year’s event are only available online. “I’ve got a small number set aside to have available at the door this year, but I want to make sure that people understand I’m not walking around with a bunch of these tickets. The Cape May Police Athletic League supports several programs for over 100 area kids, including summer and winter basketball teams, as well as sponsoring such events as National Night Out each August and the annual Christmas season toy drive. The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

shall never forget McShoogle’s Singular Single Malt whisky. It was the night we liberated Paris from the Nazis, and I was at the head of a column of brave lads, sitting on the hood of a jeep where I was well placed to receive kisses from the ladies and handshakes from the men. Or vice versa: those were heady times and we cared little for convention. I remember driving under the Champs-Élysées and someone handing me a dusty bottle of what looked like liquor. I took the first swig without checking the contents: I was made of stern stuff in those days and it would have taken battery acid to have given me pause. Everything stopped, the cheering crowds and bands were stilled as if by magic, and all I could sense was a feeling as of liquid gold pouring down my throat. When it hit my stomach, the world started to move again, but faster than before, and when – a second later – it hit my head, I swear I saw angels.

I looked at the bottle and saw the label: “McShoogle’s, 1902 Cask No. 1.” Under that, in tiny lettering, I swear to you it

read: “100,000 per cent proof.”

Things moved fast after that: there was singing and dancing and underground bars, rooftop bars, secret bars, fancy bars, fancy ladies, loose men, dancing midgets in tutus, poodles with machine guns and a monkey with a key he insisted granted entrance to Shangri La. Throughout, I could hear my own voice, shouting continuously in a deep Scottish brogue (an accent I loathe), and toasting people endlessly. I was also singing: some I knew,

such as “You Take The High Road and I’ll Take The Low Road,” and “Auld Lang Syne.” Others, I swear I could not have known, but belted out anyway: “Donald, Where’s Yer Trousers?” and “A Scottish Soldier” (even though that was not, I know for a fact, written for another few decades).

I also seemed to have a kilt on, which was unlikely for all sorts of reasons. And I am ashamed to say, I danced with such energy that most of the ladies and a few of the handsomer boys in Paris saw the D’Catur family jewels that night.

The next thing I knew, I awoke on a beach, lying where the waves had washed me ashore, bottle clutched in hand. It was pleasantly warm, and I checked my watch, which indicated it was mid-morning.

Casual enquiries from the small crowd that had gathered further supplied the information that it was no longer August, but June, and the year was 1966. Also, I was in California.

The bottle stands on a high shelf in my study. There is a stout padlock on it. And a 24-hour armed guard.

The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone

O

n February 23, The New York Post ran an article entitled, “Should you Trust Your Server?” The piece revealed that wait staff, when asked which is better, will often recommend the more expensive of two dishes in order to increase gratuity. And sometimes, waiters will go so far as to recommend dishes they’ve never even tried. In seven years of waiting tables, I’ve worked with very few servers who’ve lied to customers. But in the spirit of full disclosure, I’ll tell you that I don’t always blame those who do.

What the Post article doesn’t explain is how much pressure servers are under to sell, sell, sell. It’s not always about making more money for herself; sometimes, a waitress who recommends that a guest order another dish is trying to avoid a lecture from an irate chef about sub-par sales. As a way of fostering “healthy competition,” the Cape May restaurant where I currently work once went so far as to post the check averages of its servers for all staff to see.

Sometimes, though, what The New York

Post refers to as “pushing” food on guests isn’t about dollar signs at all, but about getting rid of what hasn’t been selling. I once worked at a seafood shack that, toward the end of the season, nearly ran out of seafood.

“If you people don’t start selling the burger,” the chef yelled at his staff, “I’m going to get angry!” Having watched him throw one of the last remaining lobster claws against the walk-in refrigerator, I knew he was already there. But try convincing little old ladies with their hearts set on splitting a fish taco that what they’ve really been craving are three 12-ounce slabs of beef: it’s not easy.

peace. For instance, when a meal is taking an extraordinarily long time, and I can tell that the blood pressure of the waiting customer is rapidly increasing, I might tell him that I accidentally dropped his fish on the f loor of the kitchen. The chef, I say, would never dream of serving it to him, of course; he’s busy preparing an entirely new dish instead. The man is so impressed that I’d throw myself under the bus, and so grateful to know that he won’t be eating an offof-the-ground entrée, he becomes more appreciative than annoyed. “Don’t worry about it,” he’ll say to me, “Take your time!”

I know, even this kind of fibbing is unethical. After all, a lie is a lie is a lie.

But sometimes I can’t help but wonder if dishonesty isn’t simply a dining room reality. (I see you, Mr You-Know-WhoYou-Are, bringing your wife to dinner one weekend and your saucy mistress to dinner the next.) Perhaps the cold, hard truth is that we could all stand to be a little more upright. In the meantime, have a burger.

For her to say something to you once is one thing, and can possibly be explained away – too much whisky, perhaps. But twice is another matter altogether; in that

Any suggestions for keeping my cool? – Green Waitress Dear Waitress The most important advice the Answer Lady can give you is to not, repeat NOT engage anyone who has been drinking.

It’s pointless. Someone who is impaired is ultimately accountable, but not necessarily responsible for their actions. As hard as it is to keep that “the customer is always right” mantra playing in your head (because let’s face it, sometimes they’re just not), try to cling to it as best you can. One of the reasons the Answer Lady always preferred waitressing over bartending is that you can walk away from a table. Do it. Then go count to 10, pop into the kitchen and scream at the nearest chef, walk outside, do some jumping jacks and return to Sir Drinks-a-Lot with your temper in check. Cheers!

YAP 201: this one’s for the Franklin Street School is a compilation of multimedia work from the Cape May, Lower Township and Wildwood YAP fall/winter sessions - including masks, kites, and pop art photographic portraits, in Andy Warhol style. The exhibit opened February 26 with a lively reception for students, parents, teachers and the community, and continues through March.

Artwork is for sale, with all exhibit proceeds this year going to benefit the continuing preservation efforts for the Franklin Street School. Don’t miss out on these fun and affordable pieces and a chance to help.

Lower Cape May Regional’s Rylee Gould had great success after the girls’ basketball team upset Atlantic City with a score of 52-47. Rylee, daughter of Harriet and Byron Gould of North Cape May, was the leading scorer with 13 points.

Strongly influenced by friend and former LCMR basketball standout Stephanie Dugan, as well as by her late father, Gould started playing basketball in fifth grade and continues to prove herself through her strong work ethic. She sat varsity as a freshman, and since then has been a major contributor, helping the Caper Tigers finish with a 6-15 record while averaging 10 points per game.

Senior co-captain Marisa Staley said, “Rylee is the hardest worker on our team,” and it is with this work ethic that Gould hopes to make the All-Cape Atlantic League All-Star Team.

As for continuing basketball at the next level, Gould is unsure.

She has committed to Wesley College in Delaware, where she will play soccer and is considering basketball.

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Take a Yoga Retreat

hat’s the difference between a retreat and a vacation? A vacation allows you escape something – to take a break from your work, your chores, and your daily routine. A retreat encourages you to get into something. This weekend at Congress Hall it was yoga.

At the Cape May Yoga Retreat, you join yogi Sharon Fruchtman for a complete weekend focused on yoga, including classes with master teacher Doug Swenson. All skill levels are welcome to this annual event, which begins with a discussion on Friday evening. Then, with the ice broken, it’s right into the first yoga workshop, reassuringly named ‘Introduction.’

Saturday’s workshops go more in depth, and promise to teach you to “unlock the power and magic of conscious breathing,” or to learn “smooth, circular” movements that “flow like a soft, poetic dance.” By this time it becomes clear that although beginners are welcome, more experienced yoga practitioners will be far from bored.

Yoga should be a part of your fitness routine, not all of it, so the lunch break is a chance to get in some aerobic activity with a walk on the beach or a stroll along the mall.

It’s a good time to deal with the emotions yoga can bring to the surface. Any perch on the promenade with a view of the water is a good place for quiet contemplation.

The afternoon is devoted to digestive health and nutrition. On Saturday evening,

the retreat offered a demonstration on preparing raw foods. At the hands of a skilled chef like Lucas Manteca, there is no deprivation in foods like tuna with mango and multi-colored bell peppers, tomato gazpacho with Cape May salt oysters and sour orange sorbet with dehydrated orange chips. Thirsty? How about a beverage like a carrotini, a fennel digestive, or cucumber mojito? The demonstration is a reminder that “healthy” and “tasty” are not opposites.

Then, it’s off to sleep or to enjoy music at the Brown Room. By Sunday morning, new friendships are forming, making the yoga workshops even more enjoyable, especially ‘Interactive Partner Yoga,’ which promises the “most laughter produced at any yoga workshop!” A discussion wrapped up the weekend at 1pm.

Yoga is spiritual for some, a simple exercise for others. It’s an individual thing, but it is a lot of fun to do it together. And even though it’s not a “vacation,” you do find yourself escaping something – yourself.

ou know how you are always just a step off pace with everything? You thought about buying gold back when it was under $300 an ounce (but you didn’t). You planned to make a hybrid your next car but in a year when gas prices were low, you went for an SUV instead.

Well here’s a hot tip. Act now and you can get in on the ground f loor just when stock prices are going to rise and rise.

I’m talking about bird watching. We are now at the very beginning of a new spring migration. You start this highly addictive hobby NOW and you have three months of ever-accelerating, in-your-face WOW. Bird watching? Yep. It’s what’s trending. I’m not kidding. There’s a movie coming out in early fall about three guys trying to see who can find the most species of birds in a single year. You heard it here first!

Bird watching is going to be as sexy as sex!

It’s going to send field guide sales through the roof and make binocular prices rise faster than a gallon of gasoline.

And you can get in before the craze.

Start birding now and you’ll know enough to open your own bird-watching consulting firm or open a clothing shop in Cape May that specializes in green, brown and tan clothing that doesn’t swish when you walk. Heck, you might even get Jack Black or Owen Wilson to model it!

But first you need to understand your market, and this means becoming a bird

watcher. Ever go to a hardware store for a 10-penny nail and they look at you with a blank stare? Try marketing to birders without knowing anything about birding. When you become a bird watcher, you’ll learn why clothing that doesn’t go swish is crucial.

Of course, if you just want to become a bird watcher because it’s fun, no one’s stopping you. In fact, for about a century and a half that’s why most people started watching birds. Take it from me, you’re not going to make money just watching birds.

I should have listened to my grandmother. No, not that one. The other one.

The one who didn’t have the dead piping plover on her fashionable hat.

Back when I was just a wee little Thanu, I published an article about hawk migration. It was my very first publication: my coming out as a student of bird study.

With a proud f lourish I handed a copy of my work to grandmom who looked at the title. She shook her head and lamented.

Oh, right. You didn’t know that when I got out of college I installed carpet for a couple of years. Paid the bills and gave me time to travel and bird in the slow season.

But the slow season wasn’t in spring, which brings me back to the point of this article.

Now, it doesn’t matter what your vocation is. Anybody can be a bird watcher.

There are bird watchers who are Democrats, Republicans, maybe even a couple of renegades; birders who own Fortune 500 companies and birders who don’t have a dime in their pockets.

There are bird watchers who trot around the globe and bird watchers who never leave their back yard.

Which, being in Cape May, New Jersey is no great hardship. Heck, there are yards hereabouts that have recorded over 300 species. Heck, there are places in Cape May where you can stand and have over 100 species of birds go by you in a single day.

In spring. Which is coming. And so are the birds.

Now it’s up to you. You can get in on the ground f loor on this bird watching thing or let another opportunity pass you by. Me?

Trust us, bird watching is about to be BIG! Well, I made my choice a long time ago.

Birding saved my knees. It got me to a lot of really cool places on this planet and introduced me to a lot of really fine people who were, at one point, no more interested in birds than the next person.

Nobody is born knowing about birds.

Tom Sims, Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews “Rango”

ho doesn’t love it when all the elements are there – unbelievable animation, breathtaking cinematography, great performances and a compelling story?

I’m going to strongly recommend you see Rango for all of these reasons (and maybe a little because there is so much junk in theaters as we head into spring).

For all of its great qualities, there is something about the film Rango that isn’t quite on the mark. Maybe because all of those elements are right there, you expect it to move you more. You want this movie to move you, to – oh, I don’t know – stir something in you? Okay, okay, maybe I just compare every animated film to the Toy Story series — is that so bad? Yeah, maybe it is.

Anybody have a support group for that? Or maybe a pill? An elixir?

Rango is the story of a little pet lizard (masterfully played by Johnny Depp) that very early in the film is ripped from his safe, secure home and placed immediately in the unforgiving desert. I know that sounds like

Stella Dixon’s take on romance on old Cape Island

his week I opened a piece of cherry-flavored Dove chocolate.

Like a lot of Dove chocolates, this one had a cutesy saying written on the wrapper, a saying meant to stir warm, fuzzy feelings in the heart of she who reads it. “Remember your first kiss,” it read. Why on earth, I thought, would I want to do that? My first kiss was with a boy named Brian. He slobbered over so much of my face in the back row of Cape May’s Beach Theater that I felt too traumatized to kiss anyone else for a year.

That’s the thing about first times, though.

We build them up so much in our minds that the actual event is often a big disappointment. Like going all the way, for example.

For me, it was more like going to the dentist: I spent the whole time wondering if I’d done a good enough job brushing my teeth. When it was finally over, I was just relieved there hadn’t been any major surprises.

His name was Pete, and he’d made me a terrible jambalaya dinner at his parents’ summer cottage. His mother, hoping that Pete’s older siblings would provide her with

grandchildren soon, had decorated this shore home with kid-friendly motifs. The Pottery Barn bed in the room where Pete and I found ourselves after dinner was a wooden ship, complete with pirate-themed sheets and treasure map imprinted pillows.

“C’mon,” Pete said, pulling me toward the stern, “be my first mate.”

“You have got to be joking,” I said.

Pete looked at me as though I’d stolen his buried treasure. “Arghhhh,” he said.

“One more pirate joke,” I told him, “and I am so out of here.”

“I promise,” he said, “no more kidding around.” Then he patted the bed’s skull-andcrossbones comforter, smiled, and said, “X marks the spot.”

If this had been a movie, I would have been looking into Pete’s eyes, feeling the kind of nervous excitement one generally feels while engaged in a moment she’ll never forget. Instead, I spent the whole time trying to remember the difference between port and starboard and cringing every time Pete made a joke about going below deck.

Our relationship was one that made me feel, eventually, like voluntarily walking off of a plank. So maybe this pirate-themed bed was appropriate after all. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from all my years of dating the swashbucklers of Cape May, it’s that the seas of our relationships are often more stormy than we’d like. But if we give up hope that the sailor of our dreams is out there, our ship is already sunk. I know in my heart that, when it comes down to it, love is just about the only booty worth waiting for.
