Talk Of The Town
RAMBLINGS, GOSSIP, SHOUT-OUTS, AND OCCASIONALLY IMPORTANT ODDS AND ENDS
Two of the Exit Zero puppies, Friday and April, frolic on Higbee Beach. Long may it continue.
The Ugly Mug’s legendary froth-blowing contest is on Sunday, September 8.
WALKING the dog, for those of us who like to really exercise our pet and not merely facilitate a quick bathroom break, has always been a challenge in this fair land. It is, of course, verboten at the main beaches for seven months of the year, but many folks have fallen back on Higbee Beach or the bay beach at Townbank, which became a hotspot when beachgoers quite rightly complained about irresponsible dog owners who were failing to clean up after their animals. So we were a little concerned to see a message on the Cape May Good Times Facebook page the other day, noting that a Lower Township police officer had told a dog owner that pooches weren’t allowed at Higbee. On Labor Day, we called the LTPD, who couldn’t confirm if one of their officers had actually said such a thing. We asked about the rules regarding dog walking on Higbee Beach but didn’t receive a clear answer. But we did check the state’s website (the Fish and Wildlife department run Higbee), and it mandates that dogs are allowed there between September 1 and April 30. For nine years, we’ve been walking the Exit Zero puppies on Higbee daily, without any hassle, apart from the odd altercation with a grouchy birder, or an over-stressed, overprotective dog owner. We sincerely hope there is no future crackdown by the state, but we’ll say what we’ve said in these pages before... if you’re a dog owner who leaves poop on the beach, you’re a disgrace. In the meantime, we were excited to be told by a spokesman from the LTPD that plans were afoot to create a fancy new dog park at Cape May County Airport. Here’s hoping. Governor Chris ¯ THE Washington Street Mall was even more packed Christie did a than usual last Wednesday when Governor Chris Christie walkabout at the Washington came to town to discuss the state of the Jersey Shore, postStreet Mall on Hurricane Sandy. Of course, Cape May was barely touched Wednesday, by the storm that devastated some resort towns further north, August 25. More but the governor’s visit was appreciated by the hundreds who photos on the front page, in heard him say that Cape May was “one of the most beautiful places in the case you didn’t world.” notice. ¯ At last year’s froth-blowing competition at the Ugly Mug, where

Subscriber Of The Week
Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Amy Kriegel of New City, New York. How long have you been coming to Cape May? Let’s see, my son is 19 now... so about 15 years, I suppose.
Facebook Mystery Contest
What do you like about it? I love the beaches and the town. What’s your favorite place? Oh, the beach. Especially Philadelphia and Trenton; they’re familyfriendly and you know the water is always good. Least favorite thing about Cape May? Parking. Especially this past weekend... It was like: Are you kidding? We couldn’t find a spot. What is your favorite restaurant? The Lobster House, and HotDog Tommy’s... although this weekend, the line was too long! What do you like about Exit Zero? I love the store and the T-shirts, and being in the magazine of course. What’s your least favorite thing about Exit Zero? Not being in it! What’s your T-shirt size? Let’s go with large... I will shrink everything. Want to join our army of subscribers — there are hundreds of them in nearly 30 states! Call us on 609-770-8479 or buy one online at ezstore.us. It’s $50 for all 47 BW issues PLUS our six color issues.
KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above. If you think you know this place, you could win a gift certificate for a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for instructions on how to enter at facebook.com/ exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

contestants try to blow as much head from their beers in one breath as possible, we met a gentleman — a 51-year-old casino worker named Ron Yowell — who told us he’d been preparing all year by practicing with a mixture of dish detergent and water. “I’ll catch myself blowing froth at 3:30 in the morning,” he told us, “but I shouldn’t say that; you’re going to think I’m too into this.” (FYI, Ron, if you’re worried about appearing too zealous, then you should probably have avoided telling us about the special frothblowing goggles you purchased, or the necessity of “becoming the froth.”) But that’s how important this competition is to some people; many plan their vacations around it, including the family who has flown in from Ohio years past specifically to blow. And why shouldn’t they? The event, this Sunday, September 8, benefits a good cause (around $1,300 was raised for the Police Athletic League during last year’s 42 rounds of competition), affords bragging rights to one especially talented blower (we’re hoping the Mug’s Amanda Peck is back to defend her title as US Froth Blowing Champion this year), and is an opportunity to see members of your police force, the evening’s judges, moonlighting as the Official Polka Dancing Club of Cape May (complete with ponchos and Miller Lite-filled water pistols). Sexual innuendos notwithstanding, it’s a night of good, clean fun… although we do mean “clean” in the metaphorical sense. “You can’t be afraid to get wet,” says Carl Schnekenburger, whose been entering the competition since 2001. “That’s the secret.” That, and it “helps to be sober.”

The Arts Column
T
Tom Sims on an unmissable new album from local singer/songwriter Gordon Vincent
HERE are several musicians on the Cape May scene who are dedicated to the community and recording impressive collections of songs. Very few of them are as hard-working and dedicated to their craft as Gordon Vincent. He has been named one of the “top independent artists in the country” according to Billboard magazine (no small achievement), and others have heralded Vincent as an “emerging artist” and “visionary.” His music has been consistently outstanding, building on his commitment to perfecting his sound. His new CD, Just Say Yes, is a catalogue demonstrating Gordon’s growth musically and with lyrics that are as simple as they are expressive. His sound remains folkinspired, but he’s adding a more retro, funky sound that is merging very nicely with his style. This means each track on the collection is distinct from each other as it is separate from anything else he’s done. Whether it’s the island sound of “R U Ready” or the driving locomotive rhythm of “Need,” this CD has a diverse array of
songs that elevates Vincent and his music to rival any sound from players in the national spotlight. The soulful vibes in the selection entitled “New York” and the spry piano licks in the title track “Just Say Yes” keep you wanting to sample every taste in this sampler. “Spend Some Time with Me” has a smooth sound that harkens back to the spirited sounds of R&B yesteryear. The song is
perhaps my favorite track on the CD because it is both unassuming and elegant. “Take a look at me/I’m still standing where you left me days four days ago/after I waited so long just to see you/I feel so lonely for your love/ how could you just leave me be here.” The simplicity of longing to spend time with a loved one — something easily forgotten in the hustle of everyday living. Gordon is a regular performer locally in festivals, at Mad Batter (September 6, 7pm), and Hawk Haven (September 8, 1pm) —but he is also invited to play at programs throughout the country. So when you get a chance to see him play in his home town, take the time to spend some time. You can also follow his music at gordonvincent.com. Just Say Yes is available at the website for your listening pleasure. As Gordon mentions on his website, “I’m not a small business… just an artist in the process of surviving and making music. So the CDs are free… download it, share it.” Like any good musician promoting his work, the tip button is there for your use and as you know, “tips are always appreciated!”

Life is full of choices
Choices for lunch with a friend:
#1 No view (unless you consider the parking
lot a view). The usual menu of burgers, salads, wraps and lots (lots) of fried stuff. Nothing to do when you’re finished except get back to your car before the meter runs out. Rob and Linda Leskin, Donna Brenner
#2 Wow! Look at the view! A Victorian
mansion, beautiful lawns and gardens, even an herb garden a few steps from your table. A varied menu...cafe fare to an elegant Tea Luncheon, with unique salads, signature sandwiches and desserts to make you give up dieting. After lunch? Stroll the grounds, visit the museum shop or see the latest exhibit in the gallery. There’s no rush to get anywhere, because the parking is free.

The book everyone in Cape May is talking about It was supposed to be published by the famed Philadelphia company J. B. Lippincott in the late 1940s, but after a dispute with the author, it lay in a closet for 60 years. Now, finally... this remarkable story can be told, and enjoyed. These beautiful hardcover, illustrated books signed by the late author’s grandson, George Carlisle, are available at the Exit Zero Store & Gallery. Or at our online store: ezstore.us. And at selected local stores.

The Old Fogey
R
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
ISING oceans. There, I have said it. Let no man nor beast unsay it. Obviously, such a phenomenon bothered me little when I was a hermit atop a Scottish mountain, dispensing wisdom/ savage blows/both to the head to whoever dared climb the haar-slicked rocks to reach me. “Oh great mystic, what should I do with my life?” one brutish local inquired of me one late evening, having scaled the wet rock after more than a few whiskies, from the look in his eye and the smell on his breath. “Take thyself to a magical town on the distant shore of the nearby ocean, and thence found a local newspaper of great repute and no small nonsense,” I said kindly, thumping the lout on the temple with one calloused fist. “Aye, ah surely wull!” he roared as he fell. And here we are today, fate fulfilled. (I am pleased to say, too, that my advice to an awkward young fellow who was harping on about some social networking idea that made no sense to me, seems to have paid
dividends: I wished him to cease bothering me so struck him hard across the face with a book I had to hand. “That to your idea!” I shouted, and he looked both inspired and fearful as he fell away. He never forgot, though, and a check for a stupendously large amount came in the mail last year. Anyways, fate has also rendered our town’s low level a hazard, once the seas die and rise, and emaciated polar bears wash up looking for dinner. SO dear hearts, we will raise the town ourselves. Not by technological means, but
by simple persistent effort from all of us. From now on, every townsperson leaving and returning, must bring back two pounds of sand or fine gravel. This must be evenly spread about Cape may, ideally by being dropped slowly down specially widened pants legs, much like the plucky POWs in The Great Escape did when disposing of dirt from their tunnel. Over time our combined efforts will see a slight but significant rise in the level of the land, slowly raising sidewalks and gardens and walkways. Of course, our homes will not rise by this method, and so we must start slowly building an extra f loor atop our houses, for the day that the ground f loor becomes the basement. My calculations have it that by the time the sea level rises three feet, the town will have risen four feet, which will actually afford us even better views than now. An added incentive is that if we take the sand from Wildwood, that town will have actually lowered itself by an extra four feet, and will be partially submerged within 20 years, and naught but a terrible legend in another 20.

Book Gift Certificate Giveaway
Every week, we ambush an unsuspecting citizen (or citizens) with a gift certificate to Cape Atlantic Book Company Who are you? I’m Colton Goodman and this is my girlfriend Katie Sullivan. I grew up in Cherry Hill, NJ and my girlfriend grew up in Cape May, but now we both live in Austin, Texas. What do you do? I’m supporting a team of financial advisers from Morgan and Stanley and Katie is an internist. Are you here on vacation? Yes, we are here a couple of days for our friend’s wedding. Is there something that you would change in Cape May? You know the sign in front of the new Convention Hall? The one with the lights? I hate that with an intense passion! Favorite book? Here’s To Your Health
J
A weekly column about getting fit and feeling your best ... by Mark Chamberlain of North Beach Health Club
UICING for nutrition, energy and cleansing has grown over the last 10 years and is no longer just for aging hippies. Things like wheat grass have become mainstream, and small-town shopping districts and malls continue to add shops catering to health-conscious consumers. I recently spoke to a local juicing zealot, Mark Jacopec, a carpenter, drumming enthusiast, yoga teacher and owner of a small bike touring company. Mark fuels all of this activity with a diet comprised primarily of fruits and vegetables, though he eats ‘pizza and chicken occasionally.” We met one steamy morning and sat at his home juice bar, in his yard, made from discarded wood and old, distressed windows. There are 10-feet tall hedges on one side and his house on the other and a patio made of mosaic patterns of old brick leading to his backyard gardens. It looks like a cottage in Key West. We soon got down to business as he presented his Omega 8006 Slow Juicer and his Vitamix blender. According to Mark, slow juicing is the way to go. It takes
longer but extracts a lot more juice per volume. So Mark’s machine is big and shiny… but slow. It’s the only thing slow about him. Like most contractors he had beaten up his body pretty good and by age 50 he was feeling it. It was the usual contractor’s diet of Wawa hoagies and a pit stop at the Mug for some afternoon refreshments. “I couldn’t keep eating that way and expect to feel anything but bad.” So he started cleaning up his diet and soon found juicing to be the thing that works for him. The pain he woke up to everyday subsided, he started doing yoga and he hasn’t looked back. So it works for Mark but will it work

for you? Any discussion of replacing solid food with a vegetable-fruit concoction will eventually need to address the issue of protein content. So I consulted an expert, Dr. Fuhrum, of PBS fame, to see just how much protein is in a typical green drink. He measures them based on a 100-calorie count and compares to the same of meat. Broccoli has 11g, romaine lettuce 7g and cooked kale 7g. Meat has about 8g. This means that you can get sufficient protein and lots of vitamins and minerals without the drawbacks associated with consuming lots of corporate farm-raised beef. If you are going to juice for the first time, start small. Get a $150 juicer and always buy organic. Here’s a sample juice... Lots of celery, soft greens like kale and romaine, a quarter piece of whole lemon, carrots, apple, piece of ginger, coconut water and, if you like it spicy, fresh hot pepper. And watch out for a mad man, riding on a fixed gear bike, racing around the island at 6am. As I said, there is nothing slow about Mark.

Wise answers to perplexing questions
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I just spent the summer working retail in Cape May, and I’m feeling pummeled and less than charitable. Am I in the wrong line of work? Is the customer always right? — Dazed and confused Dear Dazed The Answer Lady has worked several stretches in some fine retail establishments over the past few years — including the lovely EZ stores — and she is here to tell you: such work is not for the faint of heart. The pay is not spectacular, there are long hours spent on one’s aching feet, a fair bit of physical labor in some cases, and then…. there are the people. Lest you expect the Answer Lady to launch into a diatribe about how the customer is a big ol’ doofus, however, let us take a moment to remind ourselves what we are getting into when we
choose to toil in the SERVICE industry. We are signing up to SERVE, whether it is food, drinks, ringing up purchases, or dispensing fudge samples. (The Answer Lady has never done the latter, as she is fully capable of eating her own body weight in fudge.) But the Answer Lady digresses. Let us please bear in mind that if we are working in a service establishment, we must, in the presence of a customer, put aside chatting with fellow employees, texting, Sudoku, knitting, or idle doodling, make eye contact

Bird Droppings
S
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
EPTEMBER is when it starts to get really interesting. Fall migration is beginning to kick into high gear. Every cold front ferries more and more northern breeding songbirds to Cape May. On top of that, there are a few southern species that irregularly wander north this time of year. Juvenile White Ibis may well be annual and even the odd woodstork wanders up this way every few years. September is also when a handful of western birds wander east. Examples include Lark Sparrow and Western Kingbird. To cap things off, there are lots of newly fledged local breeders moving about plus lots of migrating warblers, orioles and other southbound neotrops — birds that winter in the neotropics. One good place to see lots of birds are the beaches of Cape May Point State Park. Migrating terns like to loaf on the beaches there. If the beach is empty (of birds that is), scan the rips offshore. The birds are feeding. The Nature Conservancy’s preserve on Sunset Boulevard (know to locals as the Meadows) is a great place to enjoy migrating
shorebirds. And, if you are looking for an easy window into the warbler migration, the little wooded lot next to Cape May Bird Observatory is a magnet for migrants. With a little luck there might be one or more hummingbirds coming to the feeder. CMBO staff will be happy to help you identify the birds you are seeing or you can thumb a field guide and figure it out for yourself. Part of bird watching is the fun and the challenge. At most places this includes find-

ing birds. Here at Cape May it is mostly a matter of identifying and keeping track of all the birds you find. New birds are arriving daily. It is just what they do this time of year. These are professional birds, they know what they are doing. The person who probably could use a little assistance is you. So come on over. Cape May Bird Observatory, THE place for all your nature needs, is located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point (609-884-2736), and open daily from 9:30am to 4:30pm. You can pick up a free copy of the Autumn Kestrel with our schedule of programs and walks for the season, a free birding map and checklist, and browse. Seymore Thanu is Pete Dunne, Director of Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.

A Great Place To Stay, Shop & Eat!

West Cape May ...a small town by the sea
Rich in history, West Cape May can trace its beginnings to farmers 400 years ago. Now it’s home to a business district that’s full of quality — and quirks. There are excellent antiques and art shops; affordable, relaxing eateries; beautifully restored B&Bs, and privately held homes with authentic Victorian architecture. In short, West Cape May is the undiscovered jewel of the island. Wilbraham Park hosts several fun festivals throughout the year (see sidebar). But you don’t have to wait for an event to enjoy it! Grab a take-out lunch and picnic in the park under the cool canopy of trees. Then explore the town on foot because it’s so walkable. Or bike because of the great bike paths and country roads. Or drive and not worry about parking. There’s always free parking in West Cape May! Insider Tip... The restaurants and shops are diverse and fun. Not only will you find treasures in West Cape May that you can’t find in other shore towns — you probably can’t find them at home, either. West Cape May is the Best Cape May! Visit westcapemaytoday.com or follow them on Facebook at West Cape May Business Association.

Activity Of The Week
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: East Coast Jet Boat Adventures.
P
You’ll have a wild, wet and wonderful time on East Coast’s new Jet Boat ware. And then you are speeding, spinning, and shaking the water out of your ears. The wind whips against your face until you feel like a fighter pilot in training. It’s a true thrill ride. Most of our full boat, including some very small children, loved it. The elevenyear-old in our party merely endured it, but we distracted her by having her look for the

UT an exciting spin on your Cape May vacation with a ride on a jet boat. East Coast Jet Boat Adventures is new to Cape May and features a New Zealand-style jet boat with lots of horsepower. Those New Zealanders must love speed — you’ll be zipping along at about 30mph. The boat is capable of speeds up to fifty, but the Captain sticks to Coast Guard recommendations. Thirty is plenty, especially with the added spins and tricks that will get your adrenaline pumping and ensure that everyone in the boat is thoroughly soaked. You arrive at the marina a few minutes early to complete some paperwork and don your life vests. Then, you proceed to the dock, where you leave your flip flops in a basket. The Captain directs you to climb in and hang on. Party music plays as the boat gently leaves the dock, and the Captain offers some history and geography as you glide through the canal. The unexpected scent of pine welcomes you to the wilder side of Cape Island. You wave to fishermen and watch the ferry leave for Lewes, Dela-

nudists on Higbee Beach. (They aren’t there anymore - it’s no longer a nude beach.) We looked for dolphins as we cruised to Sunset Beach to catch a glimpse of the lighthouse and what’s left of the concrete ship. The Captain showed us the Rips - the rough water where the ocean meets the bay - as furiously foamy as the bay was still. The trip flew by, though the Captain had given us several extra minutes. We loved it. East Coast Jet Boat Adventures is based at Utsch’s Marina, 1121 Route 109, Cape May. Tickets are $39.99 for adults and $29.99 for children thirteen and younger. A family pass for two adults and two children is $114. 99. Make a reservation. Riders must be at least five years old, and anyone who can’t handle serious bumping should sit this one out. The ride lasts about 50 minutes, but the captain may opt for an extra spin or two. Wear a tee shirt, shorts, sunscreen and your cheapest sunglasses. Leave behind everything you’d be sad to lose.
