Ramblings From The Editor

O

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

n the beach in Cape May, you expect a relaxing afternoon. A pretty view. Maybe a sunburn. You don’t expect your world to come crashing down. But that was the case last August for Archer Senft, a 17-yearold student, artist and lacrosse player. When Archer dove into the ocean after a shift at the Beach Club of Cape May, he hit a sandbar, shattered his neck and became paralyzed from his shoulders down. In the first 30 days, Senft underwent nine surgeries. He also suffered several heart attacks and lung collapses. Doctors told him he would never live off a ventilator, and that he would never speak again. For the Senft family of seven, based in Maryland, Cape May had always been a happy place. Archer’s father’s family has been here since the 1930s. In an instant, their haven became the scene of a horror, representative of the before and the after into which their lives are forever split. But, just as they have faith in Archer (he’s already proven the doctors wrong by speak-

ing and getting off the ventilator, and feeling has returned to his biceps), they have faith in this place and its power to heal and restore. They’d like to be able to return to their West Cape May home, and Archer would like to help out at the Beach Club in any way he can, but they need our support. Renovations to this home — including the addition of a hospital bed, wooden ramp off the back deck, and ceiling Hoyer Lift — are required before the Senfts can stay here with Archer. In total, these modifications

will come to $57,995. Archers also needs a local physical therapist who can stretch him out everyday. Many in the community have already responded. Susan McGrail — widow of local builder Matt McGrail — has already begun renovation work. Chad deSatnick, who’s led the effort to educate the public about the hidden dangers of Cape May’s beaches, has been a support as well, as have Claudia and David Von Savage. And under the direction of teacher Heather Robinson, Sandman sixth graders have spent the year writing letters to Archer. They recently raised $320 for the cause from donations for handmade decorative pots. Now it’s our turn. A fundraiser will be held from 4-7pm on August 14 at Beach Plum Farm. Contributions can be made to the Archer Senft Special Needs Trust or the deSatnick Foundation (tax-deductible). Please send contributions to Claudia Von Savage at 707 Sunset Boulevard, Cape May, NJ 08204. For further information, contact Susan McGrail at susanmc-

Page 14 grail@me.com (609-517-2219) or Claudia Von Savage at cgvonsavage@aol.com. The Senfts have handled this upheaval in their lives with courage and impossible grace. Let’s show them we’re behind them. My family — brother, sister-in-law, three nieces — are visiting from Scotland. My wife Diane thought it would be fun to take them to the new Tree to Tree aerial adventure park at the Cape May County Zoo — a quick trip on the zipline she’d heard about, and then back to Cape May for lunch at Harry’s. I stayed back to finish this issue. When Diane had read “all ages,” she pictured a few child-friendly rock climbing walls and maybe some obstacles up in the trees. This blew them all away. In fact, in three hours, the group of six only made it threefifths of the way through the course, including an entire zipline tour, which took place between 10 and 35 feet off the ground, and was just scary enough to be exhilarating. My wife is one of those crazy people who’s gone bungee jumping, sky diving, white water rafting, pretty much anything for an adrenaline rush, so she’s no pansy, either. Go check it out... if you’re tough enough. Next Saturday, August 13 marks one of the cultural highlights of the Cape May calendar. This is when my great pal

Victor Grasso’s new art show opens. The title of this year’s show, at SOMA NewArt Gallery, is “Anchorless” and features the usual beguiling, brilliant, compelling paintings by the Great Grasso. Featuring in his work are two of Victor’s favorite muses — Bela Lotozo and Julie Menz. I’ve had my usual sneak preview, and

this work is amazing. I’m also psyched that Victor will be sending a painting to a show in Copenhagen later this month. Wonderful to see his work getting the international attention it deserves. Victor’s show opens this Saturday, from 6-9 at SOMA, on Perry Street, across from Congress Hall. See you there!

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

am not overly fond of being out of earshot of the sea. It’s not that the D’Caturs are especially a seafaring family, though it is said that we first came to America in longships, looking for plunder. But for an unexpected storm we would have descended on Cape May, to wreak savage devastation on a scale never before imagined. As it happened we stormed ashore in Wildwood, and after three days of plunder and mayhem realized no one had noticed, and so quietly reboarded our ships and sailed to Cape May to live quiet lives. We have over the years taken to the seas again, when the need arose: it was a D’Catur who was on the bridge of the battleship Vanguard the night it intercepted the Nazi raider The Zement, and sank it off the Point, where the wreck can still be seen. And more recently a newphew of mine (I forget his name: he was one of my sister’s brood and all I recall was anxious eyes and a widow’s peak) was captain of the first stealth ship invented by navy scientists. They sailed boldly past the beach, to cheers and thrown hats, then flicked the stealth switch and vanished. I must con-

fess my newphew was, I suspect, to blame: there was a stealth dial, that went from “1: Is it a Little Misty Out?”, through “5: I’m Never Drinking Again,” to “10: WTF Happened to That Ship?”, and there was the never-to-betouched “11: Oh NO you dint!” Well, there never was a D’Catur born who was capable of NOT going straight to 11 in all aspects of life, and so I was the only onlooker not suprised. Officially, they were never heard from again, but 20 years later, when another Young D’Catur was a mile offshore breaking the official water speed record in a powerboat

and then seemed to hit an unseen object and disintegrate over a very large area, I had my suspicions. But for all the sea’s tendency to lure and then horribly kill D’Caturs, we have a bond that cannot be broken. I myself am a lubber, having never taken to the whole “swimming” notion. That is not to say I cannot swim: I happen to hold the Olympic 100m freestyle record, for my unforgettable doggy paddle. Elegant it is not, and in fact one drenched bystander described it as “a cross between a frenzied shark attack and an exploding torpedo”. But really, I swim only when left no alternative. I am much happier beachcombing with Young Albert every morning, seeing what treasured the ocean has surrendered. Some days it is a crate of oranges from Peru, others it is a snapped mizzen-mast with half-drowned sailors clinging to it. Once in a while there are precious stones scattered for a mile in the sand, when a storm has cracked open a chest from Captain Kidd’s treasure trove. And once, we chanced upon a sight no man has ever seen: ah ... oh, here’s my word limit. Next time, then!

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the man with the fangs

ost vampire stories are set in mountain forests, with gothic castles perched on gloomy cliffs, but Cape May’s got a lot to offer a vampire. There are roomy houses, windows and turrets that bats adore, and spooky moonlit mists to conceal all manner of nefarious activities. There’s no pesky treaty with the local werewolves to keep the Twilight vampires from using the beach, and Jason Patric, Kiefer Sutherland and the rest of the Lost Boys can compare the Wildwood boardwalk to the Santa Monica pier. Malibu Beach apparently has vampires, and there are reportedly vampires on Bikini Beach. You can find sunscreen with SPF of 100-plus to keep pale skin safe in the sun. Count Dracula should feel right at home. The count may be looking for a new home, anyway. Archaeologists say his corpse is missing, so there may be more to this undead thing than we know. Bram Stoker based his 1897 novel Dracula on folktales of Vlad Tepes, otherwise known as Vlad the Impaler, a Prince of Wallachia during the 15th century. Stoker,

an Irishman, may have chosen the name from the Gaelic “drac ullah,” which supposedly translates to bad blood. Other sources say the name comes from the Latin root “draco,” meaning devil or dragon. Legend has it that Vlad dipped his bread in the blood of the 20,000 enemies he impaled. He was supposedly buried at a monastery near Bucharest, which was also likely used as a prison and torture chamber. In 1931, scientists found a casket covered in a purple shroud. The enclosed skeleton sported a shirt similar to one Vlad wore in a painting, along with a crown and a ring. The remains were sent to a history museum, but they disappeared with-

out a trace. (Cue menacing laughter.) The Transylvanians — today’s Romanians — hope that Dracula stuck close to home. Ever since the novel was translated into Romanian in 1990, his homeland has promoted Dracula-themed tours, claiming that the region’s strong magnetic fields give its people surprising powers. Perhaps Cape May’s storied quartz, said to draw ghosts to our shores, can do the same for vampires. The East Lynne Theater Company presents Dracula through September 3 at 8:30pm, Wednesdays through Saturdays. Tickets are $32 for adults, $27 for seniors, $17 for students and active-duty military and FREE for kids 12 and under. The play is based on the Stoker novel, and was first performed in 1924. In the play, new arrival the count has set the English countryside aflutter. Lucy Seward is behaving so oddly that her father and boyfriend send for Dr Van Helsing, who believes Lucy’s issues may have a supernatural origin. Mayhem ensues. The play is adapted by John L. Balderston and Hamilton Deane and directed by Gayle Stahlhuth.

Photographer Kathy Fallon’s gorgeous coffee table book is a love letter to the ocean and the beach. A Coastal Journey is filled with compelling, inspiring photography from Cape May, the Wildwoods and the Outer Banks.

Check out the Exit Zero

After a stubborn blue-collar carpenter turned down a famed Philadelphia publisher’s offer in the 1940s, his story of a shipwrecked sailor in Cape May lay forgetten in a closet for six decades before being brought to Exit Zero. THE CAPE tells the riveting tale of John McJack and the Lenni-Lenape indians of the Cape.

A beautifully illustrated children’s book that doubles as a perfect bluffer’s guide to the history of Cape May. IN THE LAND OF EXIT ZERO contains two dozen gorgeous images of the city’s most beloved landmarks, painted by Cape May-born artist Janelle DiLizio. Exit Zero’s Historical Editor Ben Miller provides commentary.

The illustrated history book so good that the Philadelphia Inquirer named it one of the 12 most beautiful coffee table books, THE FIRST RESORT is the book about Cape May that you definitely need to own.

This charming book, featuring illustrations of New Jersey’s lighthouses by renowned artist, Donna Elias, answers questions that many children ask: What IS a lighthouse? And why should we care? TO THE LIGHTHOUSE! is an essential keepsake for any child who is fascinated by the seas & those majestic sentinels that watch over them.

Photographer Kathy Fallon travels through some of America’s most beautiful beach territories — from Cape May County to the Outer Banks — and expertly trains her camera on the myriad scenes, shapes, lines & textures. A COASTAL JOURNEY is a treasure for anyone who loves the shore.

Just a few decades ago, Cape May was left battered by hurricanes and fires — a shadow of its former Victorian glory. A CAPE MAY STORY celebrates the 50-year evolution that helped shape the iconic seaside town, along with the family hotel, the Montreal Beach Resort, that was there for it all.

Want to know where to Eat, Shop, Stay & Play in Cool Cape May? This is the book you need for your coffee table or night stand. An unmissable concoction of advice and information, COOL CAPE MAY is the ultimate Cape May travel guide.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I used to love to log onto Facebook in the morning and see what my friends were doing and thinking. Since the presidential race has heated up, all I see are rants. And the people posting them don’t care that I am seeing a different side of their personalities. Do I stop being friends? Or are these posts disingenuous and should be ignored? — A Different Side Dear Different The world will not come to an end if you limit your time on Facebook. Make unplugging a soul-cleansing moment. Instead of logging on in the morning, bike out to Poverty Beach and watch the sunrise and then go up on the promenade and enjoy breakfast at Lucky Bones Beach Grill. Smell the coffee and watch the tides come in. As to seeing a differ-

Wise answers to perplexing questions

ent side to your friends, this is why Victorian manners need to be restored. Civilized people do not talk about politics or religion in social situations because of this kind of very divisive scenario. The best thing you can do when you run into them is to pretend you never saw it. You can unfollow them on Facebook without defriending and simply surround yourself with the positive and get rid of the negative. Dear Answer Lady I was at a dinner party last week when an invited couple who came late and showed

up empty handed asked for chardonnay. The hosts only had pinot grigio. So, Mrs Chadonnay pivots out the door coming back 20 minutes later with a bottle of — you guessed it — which she and her husband monopolized the rest of the evening. I so wanted to blast them for their lack of manners, but remained silent. Now, it is our turn to host and I really do not want to invite them, but feel it would cause more craziness. What should I do? — Serenity Now Dear Serenity The Answer Lady agrees that shunning them would simply elevate them to the victim. Tip number one: Pop over to Sunset Liquors and get a vat of chardonnay. Tip number two: Make sure your dinner party is a BBQ. That keeps the guests free to escape from these social bores and they, in turn, can spend their time fighting over the chardonnay. Do yourself another favor and order some sides from Westside Market and a cheese patter from Seaside Cheese. Perhaps if they have enough food in them before they hit the bottle, they will behave better — but don’t count on it.

Bird Droppings

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

hen’s the last time you tried listening? Not just hearing; actively listening. The natural world is a symphony, sometimes discordant but rarely disappointing. Birds make up a large part of the choir section. Birds are social, communicating to each other with an array of sounds. Contact calls, warning calls, scolding calls, solicitation calls. Some calls are compound and coded — conveying information relating to, say, the presence of a predator, even going so far as to identify that predator and indicate which direction it is heading and time of arrival. You probable can’t decode this but you can still, by sitting in a nice shady spot, appreciate the sheer variety of sounds that surround us. Unless you misspent your youth going to heavy metal concerts, your ears pick up bird sound just fine, though our brains have been trained to filter them out. So go outside and count how many different bird sounds you can gather in five minutes. Insect sounds and amphibian calls count, too. In late summer the humm of cicadas should be evident

as well as the chirp of southern gray tree frog. The chittering of chimney swifts is a constant during daylight hours and the call of laughing gull a perennial coastal sound. Fair warning — once you strip off the ambient sound filter, you may find yourself being attentive to sound all the time. Awareness is addictive and at times it can be annoying. Drone aircraft are quickly reaching the top of my hate list. Your first discovery as you try listening may be the realization that the world has

become a very noisy place. Traffic is a constant source of noise pollution. Jets add to the din, and TV sets left on can drive an attuned listener crazy. As I think back, I can recall only two noise-free moments in my life. The first was a dawn vigil on an escarpment overlooking the Negev Desert. The second was a midnight sun appreciation moment on a ridge overlooking the North Slope of the Brooks Range. So listen up. Why not make this vacation the one that ushers you back into a parallel universe you’ve long neglected, a universe that vibrates with sound. Treat yourself . As for you old Jefferson Airplane and Ted Nugent fans who still have the hums of amplifiers ringing in your head, well, I’m sorry, but it’s not like you weren’t warned. On the other hand if you were a biologist studying laughing gull nest fidelity for a season, you’ve probably suffered hearing loss, too. There are few places that are noisier than a laughing gull colony. But one such place is a king penguin colony.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

F

rom steamboats to starships, you could say this week’s column is about two movie experiences that are out of this world yet galaxies apart. Steamboat Bill, Jr (1928), starring comic legend Buster Keaton is the first, and second is recently the released Star Trek Beyond. When was the last time you saw a silent film? How about one with live organ music? Steamboat Bill, Jr tells the story of college student Bill Canfield, Jr, who visits his longlost father. Bill Sr is the owner and captain of a rundown riverboat. John James King is the competition, owning a vastly better riverboat. Bill Sr hopes his son can get his riverboat back on track, but soon realizes junior is far less than an expert. On top of that, Bill Jr and King’s daughter, Kitty, are in love. The business rivals plot to break up the relationship but the real storm threatens both riverboats. This is one of Keaton’s most revered films with one of Keaton’s most memorable comic stunts. With live organ music from

Can you hear me now? Kirk with a... flip phone? accomplished organist Wayne Zimmerman, you have one of the most unique movies you’ll experience this year. What can be said about the next film Star Trek Beyond that will convince you to go? You’re either a fan of Star Trek or not, right? My record as a Trekkie is spotty at best. I’ve caught a couple episodes and seen a few of the older movies. I can tell you who most of the main characters are. But I wouldn’t call myself an avid fan — haven’t been to a con-

vention or ever worn the ears (if you get my drift). As for the reboot of the series, which started with a new cast playing the traditional roles in 2009 with a sequel in 2013, I’ve only seen this latest installment. This despite the entire series getting high praise from critics and audiences alike. Star Trek Beyond is fresh and fun. It’s what you go to the movies for — an escape. James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) is contemplating a promotion to admiral that would take him out of his captain role and off the USS Enterprise. Mr Spock (Zachary Quinto) is considering leaving the fleet as well to help rebuild his fallen planet of Vulcan. They are drawn to one more mission that threatens to destroy the ship and take all their lives. The “swarm” of enemy spacecraft is worth the price of admission. To see Star Trek Beyond, visit a theater. To see Steamboat Bill, Jr, with live organ music, there is only one place, one time — this Sunday, August 7, at 8:30pm, at East Lynne Theater Company (609-884-5898).

BEAN is a very cute little girl who is quite new to the shelter. In her previous home she lived with kids and another dog and got along swimmingly. Speaking of swimming, Bean loves the kiddie pools we have at the shelter. She could play and lay in them all day! If you want this playful pup to be a new addition to your family stop by the shelter today!

SKYE is a gorgeous blue pit mix. She is calm and eager to please. She walks well on the leash and enjoys playing in the yard. She is learning skills that will make her a great family pet, like waiting patiently for her food bowl. Skye would be comfortable in a home that appreciates a more settled companion. Bring her home to meet the family today!

SPIKE is a loving five-year-old male. He is the favorite of all shelter staff and volunteers because he is extremely affectionate and calm. He loves to take leisurely walks with his friends at the shelter. The shelter offers him a blanket in his kennel at night because he looks sad when the day is over and everyone starts to leave. JASMINE was found huddled in a corner during a great flood. She was unable to get back home and in turn lost both her home and her family. Stop by the shelter today and turn this orange and white cuties luck around!

JACOB AND RANGER came into the shelter together after a tough life of living outside. They trust eachother, but are slowly learning to trust others. They would love the chance to go to a home and see what the glamorous indoor life is like! Jacob and Ranger are like two peas in a pod and would prefer being adopted together. Two is better than one!
