Pier House Reopens After being completely rebuilt at La Mer hotel on Beach Avenue, the popular Pier House restaurant reopened last week with a packed preopening night, attended by a Who’s Who of Cape May. Once again, guests can enjoy famed dishes like lollipop lamb chops while gazing at the dunes across the road. George Andy, La Mer’s managing partner, led off the proceedings Greek style, by smashing a plate to wish the new restaurant good luck. Please don’t try this at home.

SOME INTERESTING CAPE MAY TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS

Weird Sea Creature

Did You Know?

What We’re Reading

Sometimes called “big red,” the tiburonia granrojo jellyfish has fleshy (rather than tentacled) arms, unlike most of the gelatinous marine blobs you’ll encounter. These guys, who were only recently discovered, can grow up to three feet. They have no brain, heart, bones or eyes — instead, they’re 95 percent water. It’s been said that each one looks like a “big red spaceship cruising the sea.”

They’re called “living fossils” for a reason — at 450 million years old, horseshoe crabs predate the dinosaurs. The shoreline of the Delaware Bay is the nation’s foremost breeding ground for one species. On recent full moons, nearly 200,000 emerged from the water to mate under the cover of night. The soft, fatty eggs that result from this spectacle are an essential fuel source for nine species of shorebird, most notably the red knot, which needs the eggs to complete a 9,000-mile migration. The horseshoes are a hero to humans, too. Their blue blood is used to test intravenous drugs for bacterial contamination. If you see one, don’t fear — the animals are harmless.

The River by Peter Heller Picture two American, college-aged guys on a canoe trip through Canadian wilderness. What’s supposed to be a leisurely trip turns into a gripping story of survival.

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. The place: The Pier House, on the corner of Beach and Pittsburgh Avenues. The occasion: The VIP grand reopening of the restaurant, which is attached to La Mer Beachfront Resort, after a total renovation. The ceremony: Resort managing partner George Andy smashed a piece of dinnerware! Don’t worry — it’s wasn’t an unfortunate accident or an inappropriate fit of rage. This is an ancient Greek ritual. “We don’t cut ribbons,” George told the crowd. “We break plates.” The run-ins: The Hirsch family of Montreal Beach Resort fame were onsite and looking sharp. John Cooke, affable manager of the Sea Crest Inn, took the night off to check out the new space. Jay Schatz — avid collector of military uniforms, former owner of The Abbey B&B (now a whole house rental), and all-around nice guy — sported one of his signature hats. And photographer extraordinaire Vernon Ogrodnek captured the night on film. The food: A delectable blend of fresh, seasonal American dishes with Meditteranean flare. Executive chef Argerios Mallous outdid himself with the passed hors d’oeuvres of menu-item samples. Don’t tell him we said so, but we caught EZ head honcho Jack Wright — selfproclaimed non-eater of baby animals — discussing the merits of the fire-grilled lamb lollipops. “They are VERY good.” The on-deck meal: We’re pretty darn enthousiasmenos (that’s Greek for “excited”) to try the grilled octopus starter with the “PH Balance” entrée (that’s filet with a tempura-fried lobster tail). The vibe: Stylish and coastal. Think bright and airy with a palette of soft blues and beiges, plus an inviting, white-stone bar. (It’s in the same spot as before, just expanded.) We love the outdoor terrace — illuminated by hanging twinkly lights. The low-down: The Pier House serves breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week. The final word: Tou irthe loukoumi. That’s a Greek saying that translates, roughly, to, “It arrived like Turkish Delight.” It refers to something that’s a blessing or something that fits very well. In other words, The Pier House.

Place: The YB Chef: Peter Gingerelli Signature dish: The gluten-free mac-n-cheese poppers are everyone’s favorite. My signature dish would have to be the BaconWrapped Scallops. They rest on a mint leaf with a red onion confit and a harrissa oil. These are sweet, salty, crispy and fresh all in each bite. It is my way of having fun with the food.

Wine Of The Week Sunset Liquors Hecula Spanish Red $12.99 Intense and shiny cherry red color. On the nose, it blooms pleasant ripe red fruit aromas and sweet spices. It has very elegant and integrated wooden notes that do not cover its intense fruitiness. Pairs well with beef, pasta, lamb and venison. Enjoy!

This year we are giving away to random drivers a discount to enjoy at one of the top restaurants, stores, salons or activities, courtesy of the fabulous Exit Zero Discount Deck! It’s the real deal, and it only costs $20 for the entire pack. This week we bumped into Andrew Duffy, Cape May on his way to soak up some sun on the beach. We asked him to pick a card from the deck to enjoy. He picked out a $10 discount to Collier’s Liquor Store.Who would he like to share this with? His sister in-law Marie.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence

appy Fourth of July. If you’re reading this from the paper magazine in your hands you’re lucky enough to be in the greatest town in the greatest state in the greatest country that ever has or ever will exist, you magnificent bastard. Turn off Corporate Media, close your phone, go outside and look around. Despite what they want you to believe, things are pretty great. The world is not Twitter. So cut off them blue jeans, snug on that red baseball cap, pull on that white T-shirt, crack open that Bud and go be a goddamned American. On the beach. The way god intended. (And the home… of the… brave…) I come to you this week but a scant few hours before my fifth gig in five days and clinging to my lone remaining vocal cord like grim death. This isn’t a complaint, per se. I’m incredibly lucky to get to make the majority of my living with my voice. But… I ain’t 23 no more. The ol’ larynx don’t bounce back quite like she used to. As I inch towards 50 I find I have to do more and more things to

take care of my throat like some kind of little girl. Less alcohol, more water. Drastically reduced cigarette intake. Proper air support and diaphragm use. I mean… I don’t even know who I am anymore! Anyway… My week began with a trip to Stone Harbor with my son Henry where we enjoyed a pretty amazing pizza from Stone Harbor Pizza Pub then caught Toy Story 4 at Harbor Square Theater. It was probably the worst of the series, which is akin to picking a worst Beatles album. They’re all varying degrees of excellent. And, if it ends up being the last

one, serves as a satisfying final chapter. Tuesday brought Terry O’ke at Carney’s. If you haven’t been since the refurbish, you really should. The place looks great and the brick oven pizza is delicious. The karaoke is fun, too. My friends Mike and Pam DelFranco made their annual pilgrimage to Cape May and were swiftly conscripted into being judges for the evening. He is a member of three different nationally renowned doowop a capella groups, she is a multi-time, national award-winning karaoke singer. And I made them judges because I never let anyone sing at my gigs who is better than me. Wednesday was my weekly shift at Exit Zero Filling Station. Nothing notable happened, so I’ll just tell you this; did you know the word Wednesday is derived from “Weddings Day” as it was the day people traditionally got married? Pretty sure that’s true. Thursday, Henry and I took to the road again. This time at 4am to deliver Exit Zero magazine all over the five Cape May boroughs. Getting up super-early to beat the

heat and the traffic is a wonderful idea in theory. In reality, it sucks balls. But… hanging with Henry is always great, and he is now a certified master in wrapping bundles of 5, 10 and 15 copies with rubber bands. Later that day he had his first piano lesson with Dave Hughes up at Music Stop in Court House. In 10 years I hope he hires me to be in his bands. Thursday evening, O’Brien & Joyce (my acoustic duo with eligible bachelor Tim Joyce) played Mayer’s Tavern where Mike and Pam hopped up to join us for a bunch of tunes. This was greatly appreciated because (a) they’re great singers and (b) I was struggling, still not quite recovered from the Terry O’Brien Band’s first gig the previous Sunday and I grew increasingly concerned about my vocal durability for the rest of my weekend. But more on that later. Mayer’s was a great time, although Tim, whose concept of how time works seems to be slipping, arrived an hour early. It was okay. He had a burger. Friday night The Terry O’Brien band played our first ever gig at Watering Hull in Stone Harbor. Surprise! Mike and Pam were there! They are swiftly challenging Randy and Wendy Redelico for the title of “World’s Nicest Stalkers.” The gig was a lot of fun. The load-in, however, was not. Double-park, unload, up the elevator (the door takes 30 seconds to close, Richard Lewis, stop pressing the button), to the stage, rinse, repeat. So, the load-in wasn’t egregiously worse than your average load-in, the 95-degree heat just made it seem that way. I went through two shirts just setting up. I am an egregious sweater. Saturday was the Cape May Beach Club’s annual Sand Jam, where my Billy Joel tribute band, The Strangers, were the entertainment. Everything was going swimmingly; speakers were placed, mics were checked, guitars were tuned. Then the monsoon blew in and we had

July 4, 2019 to tear it all down. If you were in Cape May at 530pm Saturday the 29th, you know how bad it was. I spent it under a tent guarding our gear with drummer Al Olivero, who didn’t have time to get his drums to his car. It felt like we were out at sea, waiting for the giant waves to crash over the bow; frightening but a little exhilarating. It eventually passed and we were able to go on with (half) the show. And, no matter how clear it is that my Beatles and/or Billy Joel bands are playing only Beatles and/or Billy Joel music, some joker always yells, “Freebird!” Thank you, Brandy White, for booking us last September. We had a blast. And a lot of rum. Sunday was The Terry O’Brien Band’s regular weekly gig at Carney’s. At this point I had serious concerns about getting through the gig with anything resembling my voice, which seemed well-founded as I squeaked through our Beatles set. But about halfway through Billy Joel I started to loosen up. Again, the Springsteen set was an absolute killer and might have to be my next full tribute because that shit is fun. That brings us to today (Monday, 2:09pm) as I tap away at this little missive, unable to speak above a whisper, with four sets awaiting at Rusty Nail. (I hope Tim has his singing shoes on.) Not sure how that’s going to go, butI suppose I’ll let you know. Generally I over-worry and over-perform in these moments. Still, it would be nice to be able to talk at some point before the gig. Though there are many enjoying my silence. Jerks. Regardless, after this week my schedule normalizes a bit, no more five gigs in five days. So my voice will be back to annoy you all summer. And just like that I’m out of space. Apologies to Ostara’s, Lance Vogel and Cape Bookkeeping for no mentions this week. Well, aside from this one, I guess. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

have lost my “Mary Lee” whistle, sad to report. The loss of the device was never more keenly felt than the other day, when I was watching a brace of rude muscled boys sport in the surf, hooting and hollering in such a fashion that I instantly wished to summon our “tame” Great White, Mary Lee, to sort the situation out. Oh, don’t start with the raised eyebrows and that pursed lip disapproval: you know as well as I do that Mary Lee has been an important part of Cape May’s sensitive waste disposal for decades. And by “sensitive” I don’t mean the gentle and considerate disposal of all trash, so much as the discreet removal of persons who may not have our city’s best interests at heart. Why do you think we have the lowest per capita number of lawyers, door-to-door salesmen and Philadephians in America? That said, should some unfortunate be consumed by a shark in the time between this masterpiece being penned, and the newspaper lucky enough to carry it being printed, please accept my apologies for such insensitivity. The editor of this rag — a brutish Scotchman who

bears an uncanny resemblance to the late actor Oliver Reed — assures me that the printing process is only a day. Apparently the fellow prints it using potatoes cut into halves, with the letters of the alphabet plus some regular symbols and crude images, carved into the flat inner surfaces, and dipped in ink. He also has the main contract to supply potatoes to our city’s diners, to be made into fries. So be on the lookout for fries with small parts of letters cut into them. Not to mention snippets of news and creative writing genius.

Find Your Way Back...

I have my doubts, but the brute told me that was the way it was done, and stood and stared at me in a manner that suggested a great determination to fight, and also a lazy eye. Well, I am too busy to thrash every Scotch and Irishman I meet, so let it lie for now. Back to the missing whistle — it isn’t actually absent, so much as no longer labeled, thanks to Magda, our cleaning lady. She took it upon herself to clean my “whistle box” (and that is no euphemism), and in the process buffed all the labels off the 20-something whistles in there. Which is unfortunate, because really, they summon a very wide range of things indeed. One alerts Young Albert to any lone Shoebies passing the Mansion, so he can erupt from the shrubbery and have at their ankles. Another would send a pulse out to Mary Lee announcing dinner to be had, and one simply summons Wildwooders with the promise of free entertainment. I fear I must either give up my whistling, or experiment, and damn the consequences. To be more specific, damn the consequences to you. I have a stout wall around the D’Catur Mansion.

The Activity Column

T

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the glorious fourth

ake a moment this Fourth of July to remember that “legal” does not always equal “right.” We celebrate the 243rd birthday of the Declaration of Independence, a beautiful, criminal document. From its second sentence, which begins, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,” the Declaration casually upends the divine right of kings, making its authors and signers guilty of treason. Treason was a capital offense, punishable by hanging, if you were lucky. All of your property would be confiscated after your execution, meaning that your family would starve. And yet, this persuasive document inspired everyday people to agree with the radical notion that governments derive “their just powers from the consent of the governed.” They risked everything to become Americans. Read the text of America’s Declaration of Independence at archives.gov and then celebrate that, as the Marquis de Lafayette said, “Liberty now has a country.” Start on July 3 with Lower Township’s Independence

Day festival, featuring rides, food, and music along the bay in North Cape May. Later, relax from 5:00pm to 9:30pm at the green by the Cape May Ferry Terminal. Bring a chair and enjoy the fireworks. There will also be face painting at 6:00 and live music at 6:30. Refreshments will be available. Admission and parking are free. Cape May City hosts its fireworks display on July 4, launched from a barge near Congress Hall. Walk or bike because parking will be a challenge. You can get a good view from most of our Cape May beaches, so if you have a big group, consider a nighttime walk

along the beach, away from the crowds. Bring flashlights, bug spray and sweatshirts. Bring snacks, but be aware that nature’s creatures are all around, even in the dark. If you drive, bring your patience and linger after the finale to let the traffic disperse — hit the arcade or enjoy some ice cream. Remember that fireworks are finicky and weather-dependent, and choppy water may be enough to cancel. For your Independence Day meals, Congress Hall serves up an All-American BBQ on July 4 from 5:00 to 9:00, featuring burgers, hotdogs, baked beans and more. For dessert, there’s apple pie, of course. Tickets are $23 for adults and $16 for kids. Or, treat yourself to a Lobster Bake featuring a buffet of steamed Maine lobster, clams, roasted tenderloin, and more. Tickets are $150 for adults and $50 for kids. Seating begins at 6:45. Call 609-8846542 for reservations. Or, consider riding a MAC trolley to dinner at the Red Store, followed by a chance to watch the fireworks from the lighthouse. Limited tickets are $100. Call 609-884-5404 or visit capemaymac.org for reservations and information.

The Movie Column

The Magic of the “Toy Story” series, by Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

M

aybe you have concerns about my long-standing infatuation (or obsession) with Disney’s Toy Story series. But I dedicated two articles in this column for the latest Avengers movie, ao it’s the least I can do for the most important franchise Hollywood has ever created. First, let me point out that there have been many animated films nominated for Best Picture — not just Best Animated Feature — at the Oscars. These include: Beauty and the Beast (1990, the first ever nominated), Up (2008, best “love story of Carl and Ellie”... look that up on YouTube); and Toy Story 3 (2009, ’nuf said). Now that Toy Story has become such an epic Hollywood triumph, there are a few life lessons I’ve learned from these movies that I’d like to share. Let’s keep in mind the premise, that the movies are about toys that come to life when their owner, beginning with Andy in the first film, leave the room or otherwise are not paying attention. They have discussions and make plans for how to best

serve the human kid that loves him so much. Know who you are. This may seem like a simple notion, but how many of us really understand our place in life? This comes from the first installment of the series. In that movie, Buzz Lightyear is the new toy in Andy’s room. The only problem is he actually thinks he’s a space ranger. This is a true identity crisis. Woody the cowboy toy must convince the new toy that he is... well, a toy.

But not “just“ a toy... Realize that good times and bad are both temporary. Woody the cowboy, who once was the leader of the toys, is seemingly going to play second fiddle to the new cool space toy with all its fancy laser shooters and sounds. It’s true, Buzz did come in and became a favorite of the kid. Somehow, these two very different toys came together to be best of friends. The first step was to put down their egos. We can all find our purpose together. Toys throughout the series are envious of the other play things who “have a kid.” The worst thing for a toy to become is… “lost.” The toys shudder at the thought. It seems to be the goal of each toy to be played with and loved. We are all similarly here for one another — to help and support one another. And maybe we would want to serve a higher authority than just our own self interests. Couple these life lessons with great fun and silliness, and it’s no wonder they are my favorites! Disagree or agree, let me know! Email tomhsims@aol.com.

ARIES: You will buy a bunch of tiny, cute succulents like a hip millennial. You will keep them alive for approximately four days. TAURUS: You will rent a pontoon boat with friends for the weekend. The annoying one will make an “Iceberg, straight ahead” joke. GEMINI: You will watch the Fourth of July Fireworks from the Cape May Lighthouse. (That’s an option — look it up!). CANCER: You will miss the Fourth of July fireworks altogether because of an unfortunate corn-shucking incident. Probably best to avoid produce for a few days. LEO: You will celebrate Independence Day alone with a sleeve of cookie dough and a sparkler. You will have a grand time. VIRGO: You will go for dinner at the newly reopened Pier House. You will run into Al Pacino at the bar. LIBRA: You will watch the first season of Ozark and become convinced you would make an excellent money launderer. If only you had money to clean. SCORPIO: You will see a 40-year-old clip of Jack Nicholson sticking his face against the tailpipe of a hydrogen vehicle for a non-toxic steam facial on national TV. You will be inspired to buy a hydrogen car. SAGITTARIUS: You will spend six hours building a massive sandcastle on Queen Street beach. A vindictive child will stomp on it and you will cry. CAPRICORN: You will stop into Chez Michel for a buttery croissant. You will immediately gain 10 pounds and a better mood. AQUARIUS: You will order a breakfast smoothie from Cape May Market. You will sip it thoughtfully in nearby Wilbraham Park. PISCES: You will watch a sunset from Harpoon’s on the Bay while playing a game of cornhole. One will be much prettier than the other.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My husband died a year ago, shortly after our divorce became final. My 24-yearold daughter has since stopped speaking to me. She blames me for the divorce and for his death. There were many things about my marriage that I kept from her and my son and now I feel I am paying the price for that. I was wondering if you had any ideas on how to repair the damage. I have done everything I can to reach out to her but been rebuffed at every turn. – Spurned Dear Spurned Only time can help. A tell-all would only make matters worse. Perhaps if she heard the truth from someone she trusts — an uncle or a close family friend — but even then, she may think you put them up to it. Much as you may want to repair your relationship with your

Wise answers to perplexing questions

daughter, the cost cannot be your self-respect. And she needs to know that. You, on the other hand, need to live your life knowing that you have done the right thing for the right reasons and trust that karma will take care of the rest. You definitely need to get your chi in order. A cup of chai at Ostara’s will help get you back on track — plus a visit to Cape May Day Spa. Dear Answer Lady My 12-year-old daughter suddenly announced last weekend that she was going to play miniature golf with a 13-year-old boy,

whom I do not know. I let her go, but I was a bit worried. I probably wouldn’t have thought about it, except it was a Friday night. She was home by 9pm, but my husband hit the roof when he found out. He said she is too young to “date” and I should have said no. I asked my daughter if she considered it a date and she looked at me as though I have three heads, laughed and walked away. Going forward, what should our policy be? – Anxious Mom Dear Anxious Best not to make too big a deal about it. Your daughter should be aware of your concerns and your husband’s. More to the point, even if you have already had “the talk,” regarding sex and the consequences of rash actions, it must be readdressed given she is sparking interest. Again, don’t make it a big hairy deal but a frank discussion. Take her out to The Grille at Sunset Beach for a burger and coke. When she starts rolling her eyes, remind her that you’ve been there and done that and don’t be afraid to give her some specifics from your own life experience. And consider chaperoning the next “date.”

Bird Droppings

A

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

ny second now, the phone is going to ring at the Nature Center of Cape May and some frantic vacationer is going to plead on behalf of the “abandoned” baby bird that their child rescued. Now what? Well here’s a preemptive answer: Put the bird back where you found it. Chances are it isn’t abandoned, merely fledging. And this process involving multiple young may also consume multiple days. Your chances of raising the bird to independent adulthood are slim. Many bird species, including robins, routinely leave the nest before they are capable of sustained flight. Do not try and do better than nature. You will fail. If the bird is in a place where cats roam, try putting it upon an elevated limb, near the place it was found. The parents will hear its food-begging calls and attend. Trust me on this. As someone who tried to raise five young birds, I can tell you that only one effort succeeded in placing a fully fledged bird back into the wild, but a

bird that was then habituated to people so that it sought out people when it wanted to be fed. Most people cannot be counted upon when a bird settles on their shoulder, as Nibs was encouraged to do. So put the bird back. If it falls prey to a marauding tabby or foraging hawk, its demise is built into the system. Nature is profligate and always produces more than she needs. The surplus goes on to meet the needs of other things.

Yes, I know your five-year-old is crying — but in this case, being an attentive parent is bad for the natural order of the universe and a bad example. Be firm. Explain the importance of letting the natural world be natural. Go out and get a rescue dog or cat from the ASPCA. But at the end of your vacation, do not let kitty loose. Kitty goes home with you. The last thing wild birds need in Cape May is another feral cat prowling the understory. Cats are the number one bird killer in the US, ahead of plate glass windows and automobiles. Speaking of which. Slow down, you are on vacation. Fast cars are more lethal to birds than slow ones. When you’re driving slowly, both you and the bird have more time to react. Watch for birds feeding by the side of the road and resist the temptation to toss unwanted food out the window. It attracts small mammals who then attract hunting hawks and owls who, intent upon prey, will not see your approaching vehicle.

MYSTIC is a handsome, two year old boy who arrived at the shelter confused and forlorn. He has blossomed into a dog who loves human companionship and eagerly looks forward to his time outside the kennel. Mystic is becoming adjusted to a crate which makes the transition to new home easier. He loves to snuggle and will even climb into laps if offered!

JACK is a 4 year old miniature pincher mix. He lived with a family including children, another dog and cats prior to coming to the shelter. Jack is crate trained. He enjoys playing with toys, taking walks, riding in the car and simply relaxing outside in the sunshine. He is very affectionate but can take time to warm up to strangers. Meet Jack today!

REDS is a four year old boy with a perpetual smile. Whether he is watching potential adopters walk by his kennel or running in the yard after a tennis ball, he is always smiling! Reds lived with a family but when his owner moved, there was no room for this big boy to go with them so he is at the shelter waiting for another family to adopt him. Adopt today!

CUDDLES refuses to be ignored, especially when it’s time for dinner. If you don’t speak cat, that’s okay he’ll still talk to you anyway. Cuddles loves to be pet and chin scratches are his favorite. He get along with other cats too! Cuddles doesn’t know why someone would just leave him outside, but he’s ready to find his new home! (FIV+)

ROCK got his name because he’s a tough guy on the outside with a heart of gold on the inside! If you come meet him, Rock will be sure to steal all of your attention. He likes being pet and brushed, but he also loves playtime! Don’t worry about his eye, Rock got hurt a long time ago when he was living on the streets but it’s not a worry anymore! (FIV+)

DEJA was supposed to be fixed and then put back outside, but was offered a chance. She was given the opportunity to prove that she can be someone’s special kitty. That she could stay warm indoors and not have to fight for her scraps. Deja’s gentle demeanor is what saved her life from the outdoors and is what will change your heart to leaving her behind.
