The Porsche 911 was originally designated as the “Porsche 901” (901 being its internal project number). Peugeot protested on the grounds that they owned the trademark to all car names formed by three numbers with a zero in the middle. So, before production started, the name was changed to 911.

Upcoming can’t-miss events around town... mark your calendars
he big event this weekend is the “Race at the Cape: Renewing the Cape May Motor Car Challenge 1905-2012,” sponsored by Kindle Ford and the Quality Plus Ford Stores, Burke Chevrolet and the City of Cape May, and brought to you by Cape May Forum. The race will be recreated with vintage cars, along with actors from the East Lynne Theater Company, who will be dressed in period clothing. The race kicks off at 1pm in front of Convention Hall on the boardwalk in Cape May. You can check the cars out before the race, too – they’ll be on display at Rotary Park. If you can’t get into town until after the race, they’ll be exhibited at Gurney and Beach Avenues. The events are free and open to the public. If you’re car-shopping, you’ll be able to check out the latest hybrid and electric cars from Ford and Chevrolet, along with the vintage vehicles. This event supports Cape May Forum’s retreat, “Running on Empty? The Future of Energy,” which will be held June 2-3. Cape May Forum is modeled on the Chautauqua Institution, and it offers participants a
chance to “grapple with the social, moral, and political issues of our time.” For more information on this or other Forum events, check their website at capemayforum.org. Cape May Stage is proud to invite everyone to Meet The Mezzanine, a free community open house event being held on Sunday, May 20 from noon-2pm at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse. Enjoy guided tours of the new 26-seat mezzanine space, visit backstage and the state-of-the-art technical booth, and relax on the beautiful grounds while you enjoy light refreshments. You can buy tickets for upcoming shows at a discount, or make reservations for the Cape May Stage Discovery Theatre Camp. You could even win a prize. Talk Of The Town
Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
An Unhappy Force ALL eyes have been on Convention Hall, but especially this past week. Since Friday, members of the Cape May Police Department have been holding a daily picket line, drawing attention to the fact that they haven’t had a contract in 18 months. “We’ve had five meetings [with the city] since February,” said Policemen’s Benevolent Association delegate, and Cape May patrolman, John Campbell. “And three of them were completely unproductive.” The reason nothing has been accomplished? “The priority seems to be Convention Hall,” John told us. “We’re given a half-hour or so, and then everyone needs to run off for Convention Hall stuff. They’ve shunned us all along.” A meeting scheduled for last Thursday was canceled altogether, because the city needed to finalize details with Peter Nero for the Memorial Day concert. “We presented a proposal that would save the city in excess of $200,000, over the course of every new hire’s career,” John said. “It would also increase the on-force time required to reach top pay. We waited for the city’s response all day and night on Wednesday, but they canceled the meeting, saying, ‘Go ahead and have your picket.’ They’ve known this was a possibility since Easter.” But picketing must have sounded like an empty threat to City Manager Bruce MacLeod, who said he was “surprised,” even though there was “some indication it may happen.” He explained that the contract contains many terms, but that com-
pensation is the sticking point. “With the two percent levy law in place,” he said, “it makes it more difficult to come to a settlement.” But, according to Officer Tony Genaro, the department understands the fiscal restrictions. “We’re not expecting an amazing deal,” Tony said. “We just want this thing finalized. I don’t think the general public knows how long this has been going on. Raising awareness is the point of the picket.” Nearby municipalities don’t appear to have had problems renegotiating police contracts. Take North Wildwood, for instance. Their contract — similar to the one presented to Cape May, according to John Campbell — was agreed upon in four weeks, before the old one had even expired. “Because of John Campbell’s position, he is privy to all of the other contracts that have been negotiated throughout the state,” Tony said. “He knows what the trend is, what is mandated by the state, and what is negotiable by the municipality. What we want is in line with the rest of the state.” Although the police officers have no intention of inhibiting the final stages of work on Convention Hall or interfering with events like the prom that took place last weekend (“It isn’t the kids’ fault,” Tony said), they will “absolutely” be out there on Memorial Day weekend. “Obviously,” Tony said, “we feel puzzled and frustrated that the Peter Nero contract has been finalized, while we’ve been without for a year and a half. This is the thing that is breaking the camel’s back.”
Race At The Cape In 1905, Henry Ford and Louis Chevrolet faced off in an automobile race on the sands of Cape May. This Saturday, at The Race at the Cape event, the Cape May Forum will host a dramatic recreation. There will be a flag waver. There will be an announcer. And there will be a banner across the finish line, just as there was in 1905. Only this time, the cars crossing that finish line will be a mix of both vintage and energy-efficient models prompting what the Forum’s President Norris Clark calls “one very important conversation.” (Oh, and the cars will be racing on Beach Avenue, not the actual beach.) We caught up with Norris, who told us that the original race — which took place on the beach between Madison Avenue and Poverty Beach — was a highly-anticipated “publicity stunt” that happened at an important moment in Cape May’s history. In the early 1900s, some of Cape May’s oldest buildings were falling into disrepair, and the town was losing visitors to a glitzier northern neighbor, Atlantic City. The way to revive the place, some believed, was through the development (think yachts, country clubs, and grandiose hotels) of swampy East Cape May. The Cape May Real Estate Company would use the earth from the dredging of the harbor, which began in 1903, to do it. Although this glamorous playground of the rich envisioned by developers never came to fruition, one of the project’s major pieces — the Hotel Cape May — did. In 1905, to celebrate the construction of this beautiful building that would later become

THE EXIT ZERO CARTOON... By Laurie Bender
THERE’S A REASON WHY THE RACE AT THE CAPE WAS MOVED TO BEACH AVENUE Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 the Christian Admiral, the real estate company sponsored the series of races that pitted the two automobile makers against one another. A Philadelphia Inquirer article sent to us by Historical Editor Ben Miller describes the city of Cape May as “on edge” with anticipation days before the event. “The excitement is as intense as if a lighted match had been thrown into a gasoline tank.” What most people don’t know, Ben told us, is that the race wasn’t merely between Ford and Chevrolet, but several of the country’s pioneering engineers. Alexander Winton, who is credited with giving Henry Ford access to the steering design that helped launch him to pioneer status, and Walter Christie, who developed the suspension system used in many World War II army tanks, were among them. A woman — a Mrs Clarence C. Fitler — also raced, and became the only undefeated driver. The race brought some of the most coveted cars, to Cape May, too — including Louis Chevrolet’s 120-horsepower FIAT, which was shipped from Italy specifically for the event. Eleven races were held over the course of two days, beginning at six in the morning. “All the hotels have arranged for early breakfasts,” the Inquirer article reads. “Time and tide wait for no man… this is when the beach is at its best” — meaning the
time when the tide was most conducive to heats of four or five cars. But despite the low tide, Ford’s car was still overtaken by a wave, taking him out of the race altogether, and Chevrolet succeeded in making a new world’s record, according to The New York Times — one mile in 57 seconds. But there’s much that remains unknown about the events of this day. Legend has it that Ford was disappointed by his loss, as he was depending on the cash prize to pay his hotel bill. In lieu of money, the story goes, Ford offered stock in his company, and was refused. A local gentleman by the name of Dan Focer agreed to buy one of Ford’s cars for $400 to help him out of the bind, and Ford promised to repay him by making him a Ford dealer. While it’s true that, in 1922, Daniel Focer became co-owner of Focer & Mecray, a Cape May Ford dealership, Ben insists money was never an issue for Ford. “The company became incorporated in 1903,” he told us, “which is two years before the race. He wasn’t a poor man, far from it. That’s just folklore.” Something else that’s nothing but legend? The notion that the first Ford dealership in America launched in Cape May. We called the company, but didn’t get very far. “It’s because these early records are at the Henry Ford Museum,” Ben told us. And he should know; he’d already contacted Ford research archivist Carol Whittaker, who confirmed that, while there was a dealership in Cape May as early as 1905, the first
operated out of San Francisco. Because this year’s racers won’t be able to exceed the 25mph speed limit, this “will be more a race of efficiency than of speed,” Norris Clark said. Older versions of Fords and Chevrolets, Model Ts and Model As, will be paired with newer models. Eight sets will roll down the street, from Pittsburgh Avenue to Convention Hall, as an announcer fills the crowd in on their important gas mileage stats. The race is an appropriate way to kick of this year’s Forum — a retreat where “intellectually curious folks can engage in respectful dialogue and grapple with the social, moral, and political issues of our time” — as the theme is Running on Empty?: The Future of Energy. It’s also an appropriate event for Cape May in general, which is moving in a more energy-conscious direction. In 2011, the city was one of six towns in New Jersey to receive the Silver Certification from Sustainable New Jersey for championing the alternative energy cause. (Efforts have included installing a wind turbine at Cape May Elemntary and conducting an energy audit of a dozen city buildings, among other things.) “Americans everywhere are moving to electrification as a way to vote their conscious when it come to the environment, rising energy costs and energy independence,” said Ford’s Hybrid and Battery Electric Systems Applications Manager Gil Portalatin.

The race starts at 1pm right in front of Convention Hall, though you’ll be able to see the cars at Rotary Park beforehand, at Gurney Street immediately following the race. “Feel free to kick the tires and take a seat inside,” Norris said. “You’ll witness just how many advancements have been made first-hand.” The original event wasn’t exactly a lucky omen for the Hotel Cape May — it never turned a profit for any of its owners and the building was demolished in 1996. Let’s hope that Convention Hall, where Saturday’s race starts, enjoys much better luck.
Wild About Harry’s We stopped in at Harry’s Ocean Bar & Grille VIP event last Thursday, the unofficial kick-off of the summer season, at least for us. And as usual, the Hirsch family pulled out all the stops, with live music courtesy of Ron Gallo of Toy Soldiers, along with an awesome spread of complimentary food and beverages. There was a great turn-out with
Thursday, May 17, 2012 lots of familiar faces — but isn’t there always when great free food and drink is offered? We weren’t in the door for five whole minutes when we saw the ubiquitous John Cooke and his wife, Suzanne, who were celebrating their wedding anniversary and taking a break from the Victorian Motel. We remarked that Suzanne must be a pretty tolerant lady to be celebrating such a milestone at a free event, but John assured us that he had plans to take her out later for a proper celebration. “Where do you think I should I take her?” he asked us. Sorry, John — you’re on your own. We were way too busy grabbing appetizers from waiters circulating with trays — pigs in a blanket, cheese steak egg rolls, cheddar-battered shrimp, and crab balls, to be specific. Coincidentally, we happened to be hanging out right next to the food table (and spitting distance to the bar) where we could easily shovel cheese into our mouths and pick at the fruit tray and the spinach dip. We were hungry when we got there, but we weren’t when we left. (And we learned from our spies that John and Suzanne enjoyed an anniversary dinner at Tisha’s.) Speaking of the bar, we stepped right up for some Sam Adams Summer Ale on tap, and a St. Pauli Girl N/A beer for our one and
only teetotaling staffer. Funny story there — at last year’s VIP event, she was served an O’Doul’s, and remarked to restaurant/beverage manager Jonathan Hirsch that there are MUCH better N/A beers out there on the market these days, like St. Pauli Girl and Beck’s, to name a couple. So we were gratified to see that Harry’s has stepped it up a notch. And no sooner did that thought cross our minds when we ran into Jonathan himself, who marched right up to our staffer and said, “Did you see we’ve got St. Pauli N/A? I remembered what you said last year and I took your advice and traded up to a better N/A beer.” How do you like that? This is what sets Harry’s apart — they take the wants of their customers seriously — it’s a family-owned and run business and they act that way. We asked Jonathan if he’s psyched for the upcoming season. “We’re ready,” he told us. “Now that the restaurant is officially open, it makes it more real. In a lot of ways I’m working harder now than in the middle of the season, gearing up, laying the groundwork, getting everything in place. That’s how you have a good season — when you’re ready. We’ve got a great new manager for the hotel, and we’re excited.”

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 16 Almost on cue, new manager Stevan Overby was the very next person we happened to bump into, and what a charming fellow he turned out to be. He’s also really enthused about the coming season. He joins the Montreal Inn team via stints in the Caribbean and Puerto Rico, most recently, but it took one visit to Cape May and he was hooked. “This place is amazing — so very beautiful. I love it already,” he told us. “People keep telling me that it’s going to get crazy in the summer. I say ‘bring it.’ I know how to handle crazy.” We saw friends and neighbors Ken Low and Sharon Flanagan, of the Bird House of Cape May, who were enjoying some wine while noshing. “I love this event,” Sharon told us. “They really do it right here.” Larry Hirsch himself happened by next — we love how he always stops to say hello, no matter how busy he happens to be, and we were impressed to see that he seemed to stop and speak with every guest in the place. (And we still can’t get over how much he looks like the photo on his graduate school ID — check his Facebook page — it’s uncanny). We left reluctantly, but look forward
to getting back soon and often. Give the calendar a couple of weeks to catch up, but summer has arrived in Cape May. Meet us at Harry’s, and you’ll see that what John Cooke told us is true: “The Hirsch family is a great asset to Cape May. They are all about customer service. This event is great, because it brings us all together and gets the season off on the right foot.”
It’s A Trip You don’t need a driver’s license to appreciate a good car, as any five-year-old can tell you. We popped into the Toy Shop of Cape May on the Washington Street Mall to check out the car selection for the under-sixteen set. Manager Nick Morency gave us the skinny on all the hot wheels of the moment. Actually, Hot Wheels are still big players in the toy car game. The Toy Shop carries their official Toy Story cars — 14 in all — which are based on characters from the popular film franchise. They’re reasonably priced
too, averaging $4.99. Another cool Hot Wheels product is their Light Speeders. These come with a little light that you shine on the car, and then watch as it’s bathed in ‘paint’. It wears off and you can do it over again, plus it has decals and such that all you to customize your ride. These are perfect for the either the budding mechanic or the artist in your life. For the more tolerant among you, check out the Sonic police car. It’s got a siren that kids will love, and $7.99 is a small price to pay for occupied kids, despite the — you know — sirens. For quieter car activity, Nick suggests the ever-popular Legos. And these aren’t your father’s Legos: these are Extreme Off-Roader Lego cars. But our favorite carrelated toy had to be the Rush Hour Traffic Jam Logic Game by Thinkfun. It’s for ages 8-adult, and it’s a progressive puzzle featuring four levels of difficulty. “It’s a great game,” Nick tells us. “I’m working on a traffic jam right now. I’m kind of stuck, but I’ll figure it out.”
PARTING SHOT We’re coming up to horseshoe crab mating season, so if you happen to be on
Higbee’s Beach, or other spots on the Delaware Bay, here’s a primer: If you see a horseshoe crab lying upside down on the beach, flip it over. There’s a good chance it’s still alive. But NEVER grab one by its tail — it could break off. And a horseshoe crab’s tail is a very vital piece of equipment.

What Is The Future Of Energy?
E
Cape May Forum brings top speakers to the city on June 2-3
very time you pick up a newspaper or turn on the evening news, energy seems to dominate the conversation. What are the facts and what are the myths about energy supply and production? Is global warming “real”? Can the US truly become energy independent? Who is the top foreign supplier of US oil? Does solar power have promise? What is the future of energy — locally, regionally and globally? Cape May Forum seeks to explore these questions at their third-annual Cape May Forum: Running on Empty: The Future of Energy, which will be staged on Saturday, June 2 and Sunday, June 3. Nationally-renowned speakers and top notch panelists will come to town for lively and informative discussions, panels and dialogue. The keynote speaker is former head of the Central Intelligence Agency, R. James Woolsey. For years Woolsey has sounded the alarm for the United States on our dependence on fossil fuels. Woolsey’s areas
of expertise include alternative and renewable energy and energy security and he strongly believes that America needs to find a solution to its dependence on fossil fuels and foreign oil. He suggests the use of alternative biomass fuels such as cellulosic ethanol. And, as a great bookend to this weekend’s Race at the Cape event, Woolsey is a strong advocate of hybrid electric vehicles. This year’s Forum has been designed with flexibility in mind. Attendees can sign up for a single session, a single day, or the full two-day program. In addition the Forum is hosting a speaker reception and gala at the Cape May Winery. Tickets can be purchased at a discount with a weekend package. A diverse group of speakers drawn from government, business and non-profits will join Woolsey in a robust discussion. Sessions are designed to offer both thoughtful analysis and practical suggestions to discuss everything from energy-related investments to changes you can make at home, now. Former CIA boss R. James Woolsey will be the keynote speaker at Cape May Forum

Future Of Energy ? From Page 49 Saturday sessions will explore, “Perils and Potentials of Today’s Energy Landscape,” and “A Green Economy — Is it Achievable? Is it Sustainable?” which tackles the balance of a strong energy policy and sound environmental policy. Sunday continues the conversation with panel sessions, “Follow the Money — Taxes, Subsidies, Credits and Financing,” a look at the financial viability of the future of energy; and “Advice You Can Use Today.” A sampling of speakers includes the following. The full program and speaker roster is available at capemayforum.org. Jim Balaschak, Principal, Deloitte Consulting: The state of US energy, and where we are headed. Alisa Gravitz, Executive Director, Green America: Guidelines for America’s energy future. Chris Martenson, PhD, economic researcher and futurist: The 3 E’s — Energy, Economy and the Environment. Chris Hart, Offshore Wind Manager with the US Department of Energy. The impact of funding on the future of new
energy sources. Jerry Taylor, Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute. The issue of balancing sound economic policy and sound environmental policy. Each day’s programming includes ample time for Q &A and to keep the dialogue flowing, speakers and attendees gather round a table to share boxed lunches — as well as their viewpoints. At 7pm on Saturday the Cape May Forum’s annual Big Night Gala and speakers’ reception will feature food, music and dancing, with the chance to sample some of Cape May’s local wines, in a vineyard setting. The program speakers and panelists will all be on hand to continue the discussions, or just to have fun. Ticket prices for this year’s Future of Energy Forum range from $30 for one session, morning or afternoon; $75.00 for a two-day pass; to $150.00 for a two-day pass plus a ticket to the Saturday evening gala and speaker reception. For more information on the Forum, visit us on the web at www.capemayforum.org or visit us on Twitter @CapeMayForum.

The Movie Column
P
By Marguerite Chandler, Cape May Film Society
rince William County, Virginia is center stage in the film 9500 Liberty as America’s battleground over immigration policy. It may be more accurate to describe it as “ground zero” for the debate as elected officials adopt a law requiring police officers to question anyone they have “probable cause” to suspect is an undocumented immigrant. Author John Grisham says the film “makes it clear that when we, as a nation of immigrants, debate the immigration issue, we are defining our very identity as Americans.” The filmmakers started filming a documentary about racial tension in Prince William County caused by a rapid construction boom. The increase in jobs drew significant numbers of Hispanic tradespeople. The story takes a turn when a community member armed with information from a conservative Arizona group becomes the spokesperson for the racial backlash, drawing commissioners to use the issue for their own political gain. The
9500 Liberty is well worth seeking out despite a lack of distribution, says Marguerite Chandler community was deluged with extremist propaganda, racial tension and threats of violence erupted. The result: the nation’s first anti-immigrant law was passed and implemented, and Hispanic families, feeling threatened and unwelcome, began to move away, leaving vacant homes and a
drop in business revenue. The community’s well-loved, respected police chief police was the voice of reason, explaining the financial and personnel costs of implementing such an extreme law. Hispanic supporters began pulling together, powerfully using both facts and humor. The townspeople finally woke up after opponents began attacking the police chief. The tide turned, the law was revoked, reason restored, and rebuilding began. Filmmakers Eric Byler and Annabel Park are politically active as well as creative. They’re founders of “The Coffee Party,” a group of activists who encourage people to “incite reason and civility.” Their film is powerful with its focus on one of the most compelling issues of our times. It’s getting rave reviews—but not much distribution. You can find it on Netf lix, and it is worth seeking it out. Quick review: The Avengers has been breaking revenue records since its release. If you have an inclination to see it, the film delivers. It’s a forgettable, but fun ride.

Exit Zero tours a local home for sale. This week... 1415 Harbor Lane, Unit 202 Where is it? 1415 Harbor Lane on Devil’s Reach. Water, water everywhere. What is it? Unit 202 is a 2-bedroom, 2 bath condominium. It is a meticulously maintained end unit suitable for yearround usage. Or rent it out as an investment property — it’s got a great rental history. And there is a deeded 25-30’ boat slip right outside your door. How’s that for seashore living? Who has the listing? Ryan Griffin of DeSatnick Real Estate. He’s a lifelong Cape May resident, and has been in the real estate business for several years now. He is excited about his job, and he’s excited about this listing. “I feel confident that it will sell soon.” How many rooms? It has a combined living/dining great room area, two bedrooms, and two full baths. What’s the vibe? It’s seaside living at its coolest and most casual. Bright and airy, almost completely updated, and the view is positively stunning. The cathedral ceiling, way cool light fixtures, and soothing, seashore paint colors add to the cool
charm. Park your boat, unpack and kick back – the view from up here rocks. Amenities? The view and location alone are worth the price of admission here, but here’s a few other tempting factors. There is a totally updated kitchen and hall bath – with f lattop cooking and Corian counters in the former and heated tile f loors and seamless glass shower door in the latter. The details weren’t overlooked here – wide-plank f looring, a very cool custom tin ceiling in the hall, and top of the line appliances and fixtures with names like Jenn Air, Bosch and Grohe. Open the

There’s good-sized closets for all your stuff, including one out on the deck for storing your outside furniture in the off-season. INSIDER TIP: This is the only condo in the place that has a dedicated boat slip AND parking space. The previous owners also installed a state of the art water softening system. RANDOM FACT: The previous owners converted to electric heat, but due its second f loor end unit location, they apparently rarely found it necessary to even turn it on. PRICE: The asking price is $499,000, a serious bargain when you consider the million-dollar location and that view of the Marina District. each week, Exit Zero will be ambushing unsuspecting and deserving citizens with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from a local florist. All you have to do is answer a question or two by our roving photographer, Gabi Urda. This week’s lucky recipient is Allison LeVine, who was ambushed walking off Sunset Beach. Where are you from? I live in Longmont, Colorado. Occupation: I’m a psychologist. What are you doing in Cape May? My daughter graduates from University of Pennsylvania tomorrow. We drove down here for the day. I’ve never been here before — it’s delightful. When is the last time you got some flowers? For my birthday, so that was last November. photo by gabi urda... flowers By Cape Winds

Three New Shows Head For SOMA New works by Terri Amig, John Monteith and Greg Bennett open on May 19
T
HE talents of three artists will be on display at SOMA Gallery, which has announced its second art exhibition of the 2012 season. Returning regional artist artist Terri Amig will be exhibiting a series of new oil paintings “exploring the interdependencies that blind us all” in a show called “Terra Famila”. The second solo exhibit is “Transmutation,” a series of oils by John Monteith Oil. Completing the trio is local artist, Greg Bennett, whose exhibit of oils is titled “New and Familiar”. Amig’s rich portraits of our favorite domestic animals are done with the intention of rekindling recognition of our animal nature. In her new work Amig continues her path of exploring the animal kingdom with her unique and gentle sensitivity, combining her distinct artists vision with soulful portraiture. She formally trained at The Corcoran School

SOMA Gallery ? From Page 63 of Art, The Pennsylvania Academy of Art, and the California Institute of Art. Amig has exhibited in the South Jersey area, New York City and Buck County, PA galleries. She works and lives in an old farmhouse near Cape May. Monteith’s paintings find their origins in a desire to articulate infinite nuance within a finite framework. “Every visual element acts as both formal and an emblematic accessory to a greater whole in an attempt to create an intimately interpreted pictorial language,” he says. Although anchored within reality, the paintings allude to a completely fictional space that can only be made manifest through the image making process. Monteith, an accomplished self-taught artist who resides in Columbia, South Carolina has exhibited in New York, Miami, South Carolina. His work has been published in Harpers, Southern Quarterly, The Art of the X-Files, and Graphi Fine Art Photography. In “The New and Familiar” Bennett’s paintings are inspired by events in his life — “rarely anything dramatic,” says Bennett, “just simple observations inspired by

A common theme in Bennett’s work is always about the personality of his subject and capturing the light to illustrate a mood. “As an artist, my journey creating a painting is one that I cannot describe in words, it is a very personal and emotional experience.” Bennett studied at the York Academy of Arts in York, PA and the Gloucester Academy of Fine Arts in Gloucester, MA. What’s Your Story?
Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here? Who are you and where are you from? I’m Joe Garvey, this is my wife Cory and our son, Cayden. We’re from Ridley Park, Pennsylvania. And what were you doing when we interrupted you? We’re just browsing here at Sunset Beach. Are you on vacation? We have a camper that we keep at Holly Shores Campground — we get down here as often as we can. How do you like the camper lifestyle? We love it — we’re actually on our fourth one. We just keep upgrading. This week’s issue theme is “car.” If you could drive any kind of car, what would you drive? (Joe) I like muscle cars — anything old is good. Maybe an old red pick-up truck from the fifties. (Cory) I never even thought about it before — maybe a Mercedes. And what about Cayden? (Cory) He’s in good shape. He has his own little toy Ford F-150, and he just loves it. Interview by Kate Chadwick PHOTOGRAPH by Gabi Urda

The Answer Lady
T
Wise answers to perplexing questions
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I have a date next weekend with a woman I’ve been interested in for a really long time, and I’m very excited. I just found out, though, that she is a recovering alcoholic. I had planned to take her out for a cocktail, then a nice dinner, then maybe a nightcap somewhere. Now I don’t know what to do. Should I just take her out for ice cream and mini-golf? I don’t want to mess this up! – Sal the Sipper Dear Sal Let the Answer Lady preface her response by saying that you can take HER recovering alcoholic butt out for ice cream any day. When one gives up alcohol, one apparently gains a sweet tooth, given that alcohol is primarily empty carbs and sugars. But let us stop this ice cream talk because the next thing you know, the Answer Lady
gressively sillier (or more hostile, or more lascivious, as the case may be). Granted, it’s not her ideal scenario for killing time, but it is a doable. Why not call your date a few days in advance and ask her where she’d like to go? Let her set the tone – tell her you were thinking dinner and maybe a place to chat and relax after – say the Brown Room. She can get dessert at the bar, you can have a nightcap. But no tequila shots, please.
will be digressing all over the place. Every recovering alcoholic is different, just as every person is different. The Answer Lady can only speak to her own experience, and in her first year of sobriety, she avoided bars (or restaurants that contain bars) like the plague. Some people never go back into them; others, like the Answer Lady, can while away a couple of hours with friends at a watering hole, chatting, picking at bar snacks, nursing a non-alcoholic beer, and watching the people around her get pro-
Dear Answer Lady A friend is vacationing with us on for a long Memorial Day weekend. He recently quit drinking. We are not big drinkers, but we have some wine and spirits in the house for special occasions. Do we need to hide it when he comes? Fred’s Friend Dear Friend You needn’t pour your alcohol down the drain, but don’t leave it in the guestroom, either. Your friend is an adult, who will need to learn to negotiate his non-drinking way in a drinking world. It’s thoughtful of you to want to protect him, but he must do this himself. And no tequila shots, please.

The Old Fogey
H
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
ow delighted was I to read this week that cars will no longer require drivers? Don’t get me wrong; when I slip on my doeskin driving gloves and lower myself into the leather driving seat of my E-Type Jaguar, prior to some clandestine race with a few hundred thousand guineas at stake, I am excitement personified. I quiver with anticipation in perfect synchronicity with that car’s engine (minus the copious exhaust fumes, I should add: I am not THAT tense). And when I won the Le Mans 24 on its first ever incarnation, I thought I might burst from pride. But really, driving was always meant to be the preserve of the special, the superior, the fittest, rather than the right of every couch potato with a wish to drive to buy chips at discount cost. Cars used to be hand made temperamental beasts that required a firm hand and an iron will, and left the driver shaken, stirred and reeking of leaded petroleum. We had no cruise control, no automatic gearboxes, no airconditioning and no safety features, and we spat in the
face of Danger. Or screamed and burst into flames: it very much depended on the solidity of the wall on the too-tight corner that Danger was sitting on at the time. In recent decades, I have taken to riding in the back seat of the Daimler as my faithful manservant, Kitchener, takes the wheel and steers us to our destination. He has the better temperament for dealing with those maroons who contest the road with us, and more importantly, gives me stable platform from which to fire my Gatling gun from,

when the mood takes me to teach inferior drivers a lesson. So, the computer geeks at Google and their self-driving car have filled me with hope that soon, 99 percent of road users will be confined to robotic bubbles that take their ample rear ends from one humdrum stop to the next at a safe measured pace. There will be no unscheduled stops, no horn to toot, no lights to flash and the glass will be one-way only so that they may see out, but not interact with the rest of the world. This will allow we remaining auto connoisseurs the freedom to drive our marvelous roadsters at whatever speed we fancy, from one glittering event to the next. Of course, most of us will perish at high speed, but that is how we elite must be: like comets burning bright and fast-extinguished. Thus energized, I am off to polish the bodywork, pump up the tires and replenish the magazines for the twin .50cal machine guns in the headlamps, as I intend a drive through Wildwood this very evening. Really, it’s fine sport and they love the chase, too.

Activity Of The Week
I
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Cape May Motorcar Challenge
f you drive the Garden State Parkway to get to Cape May, you may think that automobile racing is still an active sport on the Jersey Cape. For one weekend in May, it will be. On Saturday, May 19, Cape May Forum will recreate the famous 1905 beach races between Henry Ford and Louis Chevrolet. At the turn of the 20th century, automobiles were a novelty. Cars had a reputation for being unreliable and hard to operate, and roads still catered to horses — most people thought the horse would remain the nation’s primary mode of transportation. Races allowed car makers to promote their products to crowds of onlookers, marketing automobiles in general while allowing “automobilists” to show off. Fans of the horseless carriage formed clubs, including the Cape May Automobile Club. Because good roads were rare, drivers raced on the beach, and Cape May’s wide beach, from Madison to Poverty, was a popular location. Races were festive events, with onlookers lining the beach to cheer, and to jeer. On a rainy day in 1905, Henry Ford and
Henry Ford was at the race in 1905. You can be there on May 19, thanks to Cape May Forum Louis Chevrolet - not yet household names were among the racers. Ford, driving a Ford, started strong, but a wave broke over his car, and he lost. Chevrolet, driving a Fiat, came in second. Ford apparently counted on winning the prize money to pay his hotel bill, and when he lost, had to sell one of his cars for $400. More than 100 years later, the companies

named for these automotive innovators will face off again. “Race at the Cape: Renewing the Cape May Motor Car Challenge 19052012” is sponsored by Kindle Ford and the Quality Plus Ford Stores, Burke Chevrolet and the City of Cape May. Cape May Forum will recreate the race with vintage cars and actors from the East Lynne Theater Company in period clothing. The Motor Car challenge begins at 1pm in front of Convention Hall on the boardwalk in Cape May. Before the race, the cars will be on exhibit at Rotary Park, and after the race, you can see them at Gurney and Beach. The events are free and open to the public. In addition to vintage cars, the event will display the latest hybrid and electric cars from Ford and Chevrolet. This time, the competition is about fuel efficiency - the event is tied to Cape May Forum’s retreat, “Running on Empty? The Future of Energy,” June 2-3, 2012. Cape May Forum is modeled on the Chautauqua Institution and offers participants a chance to “grapple with the social, moral, and political issues of our time.” Next week: The Cape May Music Festival
Rick grew up in a family of stylists in Montgomery County Pa, so it was only natural for Rick to join them. He and a friend opened a Barber Shop in Huntingdon Valley Pa. In order to learn all the many nuances to a great man’s hair cut, he mentored with an “old world” Italian trained barber. In those 2 years, he mastered the “scissor over comb” technique as well as honed his clippering skills. Rick also enjoys blending men’s hair with Redkin camo color. The 2013Cape May Grand Prix
Europe’s premier car racing event, the Grand Prix, is coming to Cape May for one day in 2013. Top-level negotiations with the sport’s executive body have led to our city hosting the ONLY North American leg of the contest, on July 4. The world’s top drivers will be arriving for the event, which will be styled in the glory days of the race, the 1950s, with specially designed retro looking cars and outfits.
Arron, Sheldon, Lew, David
Construction on the track will start this month, with a temporary track being laid along the beach from Washington Avenue to The Point, then turning inwards around the lighthouse. The canal will be drained for another long straight, and the center of the city will provide some tremendous chicanes and bends, with a score of properties being extended upwards to allow the best camera vantage points. Full plans and ticket info from Cape May Grand Prix. Call (609) 770-8479 and ask for “the Grand Prix”.

RECORDS are changing for the future LCMR girls’ lacrosse team, thanks to junior Lindsay Lare. On Friday, May 4th, Lare reached the milestone of scoring 100 goals in her career. Lare said, “This is a huge accomplishment especially as a junior.” Lare credits her parents, Kevin and Annette of Cape May, as being an excellent “fan base and support system” for her throughout her athletic career. She also gives credit to her club lacrosse coaches, Melissa Venturi, Bridget Bigley, and Michelle Tumulo, and to her very first coach, Connie Mahon. Lare has been playing lacrosse since fourth grade, on the Avalon rec team, and it has been a major part of her life ever since. Her favorite part of the game is being able to control the outcome. Not only is Lare the first junior in LCMR history to reach 100 goals, but she also broke the school’s record on May 7th when she finished her game versus Absegami with 109 career goals. After high school, Lare hopes to continue her lacrosse career at the collegiate level. Although she has not yet made a decision as to where she will be attending college, she knows that she will definitely be involved with lacrosse for the rest of her life. by Jess Nagel/photograph by Sabrina Temple

romeo is a 3-year-old Jack Russell, a handsome little dog who knows how to sit and roll over. He is very smart, so could learn other tricks, and loves to play with toys. Romeo requires a patient owner who will give him time and firm, gentle discipline. He needs a home with no children, but is fine with other dogs and cats. He’s friendly, and like a typical Jack Russell, Romeo is a little handful! The adoption fee is $95.
«
MYA was surrendered after her owner lost her home, and she has remained pretty happy under the circumstances. She’s a good girl who knows some basic commands, is housebroken, loves car rides, and does well with other dogs. We recommend a home with children over 10, simply because she has lots of energy. She’ll do well with proper training and lots of love. Come rescue her! The adoption fee is $95.
«
duke came to the shelter after his owner was no longer able to care for him. He’s a big boy who needs lots of training and exercise but for the right person he’ll make a good companion. Duke is housebroken, and likes to curl up at the foot of the bed to sleep. Due to his size he must go to a home with no young children or cats. If you can offer the training and guidance for Duke, stop by to meet him today! The adoption fee is $95.

It’s your chance to “Meet Your Seat” and see our new 26-seat mezzanine. “We love selling out shows,” says Artistic Director Roy Steinberg, “but we hate turning people away. Stop by for tours of the theatre, the new mezzanine, and the state-of-the-art technical booth. Relax with light refreshments on our beautifully landscaped grounds. Cape May Stage staff will be there to give you the inside scoop on the 2012 season, as well as discounts on tickets and Discovery Summer Theatre Camp reservations. You may even win something! Our Second Stage Series kicks off on Monday, May 21 with Flywheel, Shyster, & Flywheel: The Marx Brothers’ Lost Radio Show. A sure bet for Marx Brothers fans as well as those who aren’t familiar with their brand of zaniness, Flywheel…is the hilarious comedy that introduced The Marx Brothers in 1932 on NBC Radio. Groucho plays wisecracking attorney Waldorf T. Flywheel, and Chico his ne’er-do-well assistant. Since these broadcasts were aired before shows were recorded, the classic routines and

Bird Droppings
I
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
f you are not a birder, you are no doubt puzzled by all the birders walking around town this week. You are puzzled because you wonder where the Summer went? Birders come here in the fall. What’s with the birding surge in May? Ah. You, my friend, are laboring under a gross misapprehension. You know that Cape May is a world famous autumn birding spot. What you seem not to know is that bird watching in the spring can be every bit as exciting as in the fall. After all, what goes down, must come up. Many of the factors that create great bird numbers and diversity in fall are also at play in spring. Habitat diversity, strategic location, great natural spectacle, not to mention perfect timing. You see, mid-May is precisely when the three planes of many birds lives overlap. These are: wintering, nesting, migrating. In mid-May, many of the birds that spend the winter here still linger. Most of the birds that nest here have arrived.
Many birds that are only seen coming or going are crossing Cape May airspace right now, and spending a day or two in their species-specific habitat. May is also a great time for vagrants to occur. I’m talking about birds, of course. When Ma Nature shuff les the deck and starts dealing North America a hand, some of the cards are wild. They land in
places where, according to conventional wisdom, they don’t belong. Like farther north or west than they commonly reside Take Black-necked Stilt. These birds don’t breed in New Jersey. But they turn up every spring. Take Swallow-tailed Kite. A large, tine-tailed raptor that breeds as far north as the Carolinas. A few turn up in Cape May every spring, but almost never in the fall. So there you have it. The answer to your question. Why so many birders are turning up here in spring. It’s because so many birds turn up here and.... Because the Cape May Bird Observatory is hosting birders from all over North American as part of their Cape MAYgration Celebration. You’ve heard the expression: “If you build it, they will come?” Well, CMBO didn’t have to built it. The peninsula, I mean. All they had to do was put out the welcome mat.

Your first stop should be the Cape May Bird Observatory. Pick up a free birding map. Pick up a free checklist of the birds of the region. You are going to be positively amazed at the number of bird species found here. You are also going to be amazed at the birding opportunities. Natural areas that are open for your walking pleasure. The Dating Column
M
Stella Dixon’s take on romance on Old Cape Island
Y MOTHER will be horrified by this column. But I’m a writer, and writers can’t worry about their moms when they write. I’ve been thinking this week about the parties I used to attend. The parts of them I remember, anyway, before I’d get completely schnockered with tequila shots. There was that time I won an ice luging competition in college. First prize? Who knows. I spent the night on a pool table and woke up with vomit in my hair. My own, I’m pretty sure. I do remember the prize I won during a KY Jelly wrestling tournament my freshman year, though. My college roommate and I were new to Philadelphia; she’d come from a little town in Pennsylvania and me from the even littler town of Cape May. We had not counted on an expensive cab fare getting to this center city soiree; it’s possible our hunchbacked, possibly stoned cabbie had been driving us in circles for forty minutes. The point is, he took all the cash we had, leaving us no way to get home at the end of the night. So, when we saw the giant inflat-
able pool in the basement of the party house, full of lube and surrounded by jeering coeds, we couldn’t help ourselves. First place was $50. All we needed was to pin the reigning camps — two shirtless senior girls— and we’d win $50. So that’s what we did. Then there was that time in Australia where we partied on the beach out of a 1987 Mitsubishi Starwagon — the kind with shaggy fur seat covers — for a week... or was it two? And that time in Vegas where — well,
I can’t tell you about that; what happens in Vegas, after all... But somewhere along the line, the parties changed. Keggers turned to engagement parties; KY wrestling tournaments to baby showers. The last party I attened was a birthday hootenany for a one-year-old. No tequila shots or drunk men chasing tail. Only a pinata and sugared-up toddlers pinning tail on a plastic donkey. I was the only one there without a child. The only woman not speaking in the royal we. (We just woke up from our nap... We feel a little cranky... We need a diaper change!) And the only one without a diaper bag-carrying man dutifully following behind. But that’s okay. It’s true; my days of passing out on pool tables are behind me. And I am ready to meet someone, settle down, and adopt that weird “we” thing couples and new parents do. But I can’t be in a rush. I have to enjoy the now. Especially because I might one day meet that special man... and we might just have a daughter who ends up embarrassing the crap out of me.
