Subscriber Of The Week
Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Stephanie Oscarson of Phoenixville, PA. How long have you been coming to Cape May? For almost 20 years. Who are you normally with? I used to come here with my mom; for the past 14 years it’s been with my husband Bryan. Favorite thing about Cape May? EVERYTHING! Great dining, friendly people, relaxing atmosphere, ecclectic shopping, theatre — what’s not to love? Least favorite thing? That I only get to visit a few times a year! And that the Beach Theater is GONE — I’ll really miss that! Favorite restaurants? The Ebbitt Room, Panico’s, The Washington Inn, Island Grill, it’s hard to choose just one, two or even three. Favorite place to stay? The Virginia Hotel — great venue, fantastic staff. It’s like Cheers, where everybody know your name. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? Nothing —it’s perfect as is! Favorite thing about Exit Zero? Keeps me up-to-date, great articles. Least favorite thing about Exit Zero? That there isn’t a color issue EVERY month. What’s your T-shirt size? Medium, please!
Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Kate Chadwick. If you think you know what establishment this is, you could win a gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter at facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

Talk Of The Town
Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
When Life Was A Gas RECENTLY, we wrote about what the old Vanthia’s restaurant on Sunset Boulevard will be once new owner Tom O’Hara gets done with renovations — a new liquor store called Sunset Liquor. But we didn’t stop to think about what this building used to be… at least, not until Tom discovered “a bunch of car stuff ” while ripping down siding and tearing up f loors. He and his crew stumbled across jumper cables, distributor caps “which cars today don’t even have,” spark plugs and one particularly cool sign advertising tune-ups. So it’s safe to say, Vanthia’s used to be a gas station/garage. Fair enough. But so did 13 — thirteen — other places on this island at the same time. At least, that’s how many gas stations/garages former fire chief Barney Dougherty, who turned 80 on Christmas Day, remembers seeing here as a young boy. And he should know. “I was born in the bay window above the Fudge Kitchen,” he told us, “and I never got very far.” At the north end of Washington Street there was York’s station (which was featured in a not-so-great Robert Mitchum film called Going Home). Cabalan’s place sat on the corner of Madison and Washington. McDuell’s makes three. The Mogul station across from the post office makes four. Then there was Flickinger’s, Lehman’s, Entricken’s, Kelly’s, VonCollin’s… we had trouble recording as quickly as this man spoke. We popped in to see Floyd Brown, who’s run the Country Garage on Brown Street for the last 47 years and he, amongst the wrenches and tires and grease of his own auto-body shop, rattled off the names
of even more stations, now long-gone. Especially surprising? The area surrounding Exit Zero Global Headquarters was a hotspot. Not just Vanthia’s, but the former sites of the 7-11, Brother’s II Pizza, Carli’s, West End Garage, the Irish Shop and Antiques Emporium all used to be gas stations and/or garages at overlapping times between the 20s and the 70s. “I can’t help but think to myself,” Barney said, “How in the devil did all these guys make it?” Exactly what WE were thinking. We wondered if the gas-guzzling population of Cape May City was just much greater in the 50s than it is now (that’s the decade that Harry Bellangy of the Greater Cape May Historical Society told us that gas stations were at a peak). But this can’t be the reason. According to the Cape May Planning Board, the population in 1950 was 3,607… only 92 more than was recorded in the last census. We had no luck finding the answer at the Cape May Library (thanks, anyway, to the lovely librarians who helped us look). And the Cape May County Historical Society turned up dry, too (a big shoutout to the researchers there for pointing us in other directions, though!). We even stopped in to chat with the friendly attendant who works at the Shell station on Sunset Boulevard. But when you need to know about gas stations that existed in the mid-20th century, we realized, you need to find the men and women who grew up going there. “I have absolutely fond memories of going to Captain Butch Wilson’s station with my father,” Jane Brown told us. Jane spent the first 22 years of her life on West
Perry Street, and she remembers the man who ran the station where the 7-11 is now. “He wore a captain’s hat,” she said, “and always carried around a huge wad of cash about two inches thick.” (This wad of cash seems to be a particularly vivid memory for several kids who frequented Captain Butch’s shop, as it became a thread of conversation on the Cape May Good Times Facebook page recently.) “These were family-owned businesses,” Jane told us, “and they could survive sprinkled all over the island, because they all had their loyal customers. You had your favorite place for gas or a tune-up, because you knew the owner.” Apparently, even children had their favorites. “They offered free air for bike tires and patch kits for inner tubes,” Jane said. But loyal customers aren’t enough to make a business viable... right? George Rea, 75-year-old history buff and West Cape May local, says that viability had a lot to do with the mentality of the time. George was kind enough to show us his collection of gas station photos (view them on our Facebook page), and one of himself working on a car in his father’s garage at the age of six or seven. “I had to tap the pistons down when my dad was under the hood,” he told us. Eventually, George opened his own garage, work which sustained him when laid off from the magnesite factory in Cape May Point. (This was a fall-back for several war vets who, like George, honed mechanical skills while in the service.) “Today,” he said, we live in a throw-away society. They never rebuild anything. I knew how to rebuild starters, and I still have the tools in my shop, but

THE SLOW FOOD DINNER PARTICIPANTS ARRIVE IN CAPE MAY... Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 no one wants those tools any more. If your starter goes bad, you replace it.” And back then, parts were “going bad” a lot more often. Herb Anger spent his youth working at the Mogul station his father opened in the 1940s (the one where the Post Office currently is), and he knows that quality of manufacturing has decreased the need for auto-body shops. “Back then, every gas station had a mechanic,” he told us. “Cars are made to run better and last longer now. We used to have to change the oil every thousand miles. Now, cars are hydraulic. Electrical systems are better.” Everyone we spoke with thinks high real estate prices also may have played a part in driving out family-owned garage businesses. That, and the competition from big, bad corporations which didn’t exist in the 50s. “Obviously,” Herb said, “the Wawas undercut everyone. They can afford to buy in bulk, which makes it tougher for the individual. I do it myself. I go to Wawa, because I can’t see paying 10 or 15 cents a gallon more in Cape May.” As we said goodbye to Herb, pondering all that he and everyone else has given us to think about gas stations, he mentioned that there used to be “f leets of taxi cabs” which fueled up at these stations. Which, of course, got us thinking… why did there used to be so many taxi cabs in Cape May?
Nice And Slow DUE to a little mix-up, we had no tickets when we showed up for last Friday’s sold-out Forum on the Green Dinner —
a five-course meal hosted by Cape May Forum and done in partnership with Slow Food South Jersey. The dinner was held in Congress Hall, which has recently undergone a makeover, so we checked out the new paint in the lobby (green!) and hovered around the locally sourced cheese table while Forum Director Norris Clark did his best to finagle us a seat. Over a few pieces of cow-tipper cheese, we chatted with Todd Wuerker of Hawk Haven vineyard, who donated some of the wine for the event. It’s been a while since we’ve seen Todd out and about, as he became a father in February. (Todd’s wife, Kenna, was on baby duty this night). “She’s like a Houdini infant,” Todd told us, “Swaddling blankets? Forget it.” We also saw Julie and Tai Menz, which was no surprise, considering this dinner was all about local and sustainable eating, and the couple recently opened the Cape May Organic Market on Park Boulevard. “It’s going awesome,” Julie told us, and we’re glad to hear it. Besides this being a hugely necessary business in our area, Julie and Tai are one of the most spirited young couples we’ve met. Around 7pm, we took our spot (thanks, Norris!) across from Matt Bruckler of JAH’S Creation, whose 100% organic farm in Egg Harbor provided some of the seasonal vegetables for this slow-food dinner. One look at Matt, and you know that vegetables aren’t the only thing he’s been growing — he’s got a head full of dreadlocks that would have put Bob Marley’s to shame. “How long you been working on those?” we asked. The answer? Twenty-three years. “If I untied them right now,” he said, “they’d
hit the f loor.” And no, that doesn’t make it really hot for him when he’s out tending to the fields. “If you wet them before you tie them up,” he explained, “they act like a sponge, cooling you off all day long.” Also at our table was Jaime Alvarez, manager of West Cape May’s Beach Plum Farm, the other supplier of produce for this dinner. We asked Jaime — one of the most hardworking men we’ve encountered in Cape May — how it feels to have 196 people enjoying his food. (At this point, the salad had been delivered, and we’ve never tasted a radish quite so fresh and spicy, likely because the radishes were picked by Jaimie just the evening before.) “It feels pretty darn good,” he told us. While wait staff served the herbinfused vegan soup course — and the farmers compared notes on greenhouse tunnels — we popped into the kitchen for a quick chat with another party responsible for tonight’s five-course meal, Executive Chef of The Ebbitt Room, Lucas Manteca. How was he feeling? “Tired. Really tired.” “Does he put in this much effort at home?” we asked Lucas’ wife, Deanna Ebner. “Let’s just say we go out to eat a lot,” she told us. During the delicious main event, our winter cassoulet entrée served with local Berkshire pork (Berkshire, meaning smaller and more tender, according to Jaime), Alisa Gravitz took the podium. Alisa is the president of Green America, whose mission it is to develop marketplace solutions for social and environmental problems. She offered

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 14 a few “foods for thought” about the theme of this year’s Forum: Running on Empty? The Future of Energy. Our favorite? “They didn’t leave the Stone Age because they ran out of stones.” Speaking of leaving… We were in the middle of a fascinating conversation with Joe and Sue Cortez — who got married after only eight months of knowing one another and were now busy celebrating their 18th wedding anniversary at Congress Hall — when the building’s fire alarm went off. Because we were also in the middle of a local goat’s milk cheesecake, we pretended not to hear the alarm, until a perturbed server told us to put down our silverware and exit the building. Imagine our surprise when we saw actual smoke billowing from the side of the building. (Okay, it was only steam from the heating vents, but it had us fooled.) “Whatever the problem is,” cook Jesse Goffredo made sure to tell the crowd, “it’s not the kitchen’s fault.” (It wasn’t anyone’s fault, according to the police officer we f lagged down on the side of the road… just a run-of-the-mill false alarm, and a poor
excuse for leaving a half-eaten cheesecake behind.) But our disappointment about losing dessert was tempered by the sound of the John Byrne Band playing on the street. (They’d been performing in the Boiler Room and decided to bring their instruments outside when the alarm went off.) “Why not?” musician Rob Shaffer told us. Why not, indeed. Until next time, eat local, Cape May.
Goodbye, Storyteller Richard Decker — husband, father-oftwo, grandfather of one, and the man who loved M&Ms so much that he kept a special refrigerator for them in his bedroom — was loved. So loved, in fact, he was the only guy
invited to come along for girls’ night out. When Mary Fritz graduated from college in Pittsburgh, she and her four friends — who’d gotten used to spending summer breaks watiressing at the Chalfonte — wanted a way to keep Cape May in their lives. Since the 80s, they’ve picked one weekend a year to meet up here, and they’ve made it a point to bring Richard, who they met “just through being in Cape May,” along. “He was hilarious,” Mary told us. “He had a very specific way of talking. He said it like it was, which could ruff le some feathers, but I loved his irreverence. He had his own set of rules.” But it was Richard’s loyalty that’s been talked about most since his passing on March 12. “He didn’t suffer fools gladly, so you felt sort of relieved when you passed that test,” friend Laura Fisher told us, “and once in Richard’s good graces, there wasn’t a thing in the world he wouldn’t do for you.” By a “weird, serendipitous twist of fate,” Richard ended up marrying Trish Aikens, the second-grade teacher of the girls-night-out ladies. With Trish, Richard ran Gram’s Beach Service for 10 years.

Glitter, A Girl’s Best Friend
According to longtime friend Lou Riccio, he was “the social director” of the shore. “That’s true,” Trish told us. “He remembered everyone’s name. He was a people person. He always had an audience. And he loved telling stories to everyone he met. Because of Richard’s varied experiences, he had no lack of material for these seaside stories. Richard was born in Trenton, but he attended college in Philadelphia, earning a Bachelor’s from LaSalle and a Master’s from Drexel. After that, in addition to raising two beautiful daughters, he worked for insurance companies, as a private eye (“we used to call him Dick Decker, PI,” Mary told us), and as a lifeguard for the Cape May Beach Patrol. About the latter, he was “especially passionate,” eventually becoming the president of the patrol’s Benevolence Association, and working to provide young members of the community with scholarship money. “He was a good man,” Trish told us. “Simply a good, good man.” Farewell, Richard. You will be missed.
SO WE’RE strolling along the mall, thinking about rainbows, and pondering what to wear for diversity weekend events, when inspiration strikes. Well, Glitter Girl, of course — duh. Nothing says spring has arrived like a tiara and a fabulous pashmina, we always say. Okay, maybe we don’t ALWAYS say that, but the four-year-old who accompanied us on our visit seemed quite taken with Glitter Girl’s selection, and you will be, too. Sue and Barry Tischler opened Glitter Girl last spring, apparently because the other three stores they operate on the Washington Street mall weren’t keeping them busy enough. We’re kidding of course, but we did have to ask Sue what’s up with that, and she tells us, “When we decided to remodel what was then the Shirt Outlet, Barry and I agreed that we wanted something totally fresh and fun, so we came up with the concept of Glitter Girl. The new look really paid off, and we still have the
Shirt Outlet right next door.” (They also have Kaleidoscope and Just For Laughs, in case you’re keeping count.) When we popped in at Glitter Girl, new merchandise was being unpacked — and, in some cases, unfurled. Brightly-colored feather boa, anyone? This spring, Glitter Girl is ramping it up with even more glitz, glam and girly must-haves. “Our pashminas are colorful and really affordable, and our hats are stylish and smart,” Sue says. [Reporter’s note: And there are LOTS of hats — tons of colors and styles, from fancier ones suitable for church, to beach-ready chapeaus. Even if you’re not a hat person, we bet you’ll find one to love. And if you’re more the tiara type, they’ve got those, too.] “But our claim to fame is our glittery necklaces, earrings and bracelets,” Sue says. “They look like a million, but cost a fraction.” As in, a $25 fraction. And we’re not guaranteeing anything, but we hear if you time it just right, there might even be some pink Champagne being served when you visit.
PARTING SHOT Spring in Cape May will be a mere two days old when this issue hits the streets. The days are blessedly longer, the flowers are in bloom, the horse-drawn carriages have returned. The shops are coming back to life and Gecko’s has reopened. Oh, and there are 39 days remaining until the parking meters go back on. So park like a maniac while you can – the clock is literally ticking.

EED a reason to fear the water off the Cape May coast? Here you go! This article from the August 24, 1897 edition of the Philadelphia Inquirer details how a nearly 15-foot long shark terrorized Cape May, patrolling the waters of Jarvis Sound. For those unfamiliar with it, Jarvis Sound is a small body of water between Wildwood Crest and Cape May, just north of Ocean Drive. The sound has changed considerably over the years and much of it has filled in with sediment. In the late 1800s, before the harbor, it served as a bay for amateur fishermen to spend time in smaller vessels without fear of ocean swells, and as prime hunting ground for ducks and marsh hens. Sharks are not uncommon around Cape May, caught by amateur fisherman more often than you’d think. I watched my fatherin-law reel one in a couple years ago off Grant Street Beach. But it was only about two feet long and completely harmless. Before you go avoiding Cape May’s waters, consider how many shark attacks you’ve heard about since 1897. You’re more likely to die falling out of bed than by a shark, a fun fact I learned from Conan O’Brien.

Singer-Songwriter Festival Is Coming To Town
S
WCFA’s Phil Broder tells us what’s on the agenda for this much-anticipated event
INGER-Songwriter Cape May is back for year five on March 30-31, at venues all over town. Some musicians are back for the third, fourth, even fifth time. In the first of my two-part preview, I’ll look at locals, and some who’ve been here enough thatthey’re practically locals. Princeton-born Avi Wisnia is the dean of this festival; he’s been here every year, and this year is playing both nights. The Jewish samba king occupies a musical niche all his own: a little Brazilian, a little klezmer. If you saw him at the Appel Farm Music Festival last summer, you know that nobody rocks a Fisher Price xylophone like Avi. Catch his musical romp on March 30 in Congress Hall’s Brown Room, and again Saturday at the Merion Inn. As a Detroit native, I’m genetically predisposed to like Bob Seger. Absecon’s Billy Williams and his Williamsboy Band are the shore’s version — grit in the throat, twang on the guitar, no hipster posing. Catch Williamsboy at Aleathea’s on Friday.
Avi Wisnia will rock his own special sound at the Fifth Annual Singer Songwriter Cape May Behind the scenes is superagent Kat Falcey, who annually brings talent to town. She’s back with returning acts Charlie Phillips, Jill Cagney, Russell Norkevich, and James Popik & Ten Foot Tall. You’ll find them at Aleathea’s. Headliner Christine Martucci is also on Kat’s roster, and well worth the ticket price in
Congress Hall’s Ballroom on Friday night. Vancouver’s David Blair played at the Olympic Village for the Russian hockey team. If nothing else, the Cape May crowd should have better hair and more teeth than Alexander Ovechkin. David’s music is infectiously happy, even when it’s about ex-girlfriends and other heartaches. I hope to see you dancing by the fish tank at the Pilot House on Saturday night, or at the C-View on Friday. Stick around the Pilot House after that for fun with real locals, Gordon Vincent and WCFA’s Mike Murphy. Or go to locals’ night on Friday at Corinthian Yacht Club, where Murphy and Vincent will be joined by Jimm Ross and John Nesbitt. And Teitelman School principal Erik Simonsen brings his guitar to the Mad Batter on Saturday night. There are more repeat performers, so check the schedule at sscapemay.com for familiar names. All shows (except headliners) are free, so check out as many musicians as you want. Next week, we’ll direct our ears toward some outstanding first-timers.
this guy can really cook! Over the past 10 years, Martini Beach's John Siuta has steadily developed into one of Cape May's most decorated chefs. John's latest menu draws from Spanish, Italian, Morroccan, French, Indian, and Korean cultures & cuisines. He and his team of dynamic young cooks take time to prepare food the right way - with passion and love and quality ingredients – and they take pride in your pleasure. We all do. Our great food is complemented by an exotic cocktail menu, warm service, and the best view in Cape May. Martini Beach is a family-run, comfortable restaurant, serving creative food & drink in a relaxed yet elegant setting. If you haven't tried us yet, please do. If you have, then you already know... Our Spring season starts MARCH 23. We look forward to seeing you!

The Movie Column
W
By Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival
HAT is a comedy about a 30-year-old who lives in his mother’s basement supposed to feel like? Where is it supposed to go? Jeff Who Lives at Home is the latest film from Jay and Mark Duplass. “Who?” you ask. The Duplass brothers are the creative team whose first big film was Cyrus (2010), about a mother (played by Oscar winner Marisa Tomei) who smothers her son (played by Jonah Hill) — and it was a very awkward movie. Jeff Who Lives at Home is less awkward, but is chock full of juvenile moments that have you wondering why you’re even in the theater. In the end, however, it redeems itself (though just barely). Jeff is played by Jason Segal of How I Met Your Mother, and the film opens with him sitting in his mother’s basement (where he lives, get it?), smoking (not cigarettes) and contemplating his life. He is plagued by the gnawing feeling that his life is supposed to mean something, but what? He gets a call from someone who
Jeff Who Lives At Home stars Jason Segal, Ed Helms, and Oscar winner Susan Sarandon dialed the wrong number asking for Kevin (it’s important later). Then his mother (played by Oscar winner and Cape May Film Festival Honoree Susan Sarandon) bugs him to go buy glue. In addition to buying glue, Jeff’s mission is to find out what the call for “Kevin” meant. In his travels, Jeff meets up with
his brother, played by Ed Helms (of The Office and The Daily Show). One thing leads ridiculously to another, and I was on the edge of my seat—mainly because I was getting ready to leave the theater. A couple more turns in the direction of inanity, and I would have left. But the film took a turn with some lines (nearly whole scenes) that were actually close to poignant. The audience applauded at the end, so something struck a nerve. Sarandon was wasted in a disconnected subplot that later worked its way back into the storyline. How do the Duplass brothers sign on Oscar talent? It wasn’t all bad—another quirky film from two quirky brothers. Hey film lovers, Lynda and Corbin, two of the film festival’s finest volunteers, host our first house party social of the year on Thursday, March 29, 7pm! There will be snacks, discussion, and a screening of the Diane Lane romantic comedy Under the Tuscan Sun. It’s a perfect night out for those who’d love to visit Italy this spring! What’s Your Story?
Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here? Who are you? My name is Patty Reid, and this is my friend Diane Schreiber. [Reporter’s note: Diane was there, she is just a little camera-shy.] Where are you from? We live in Freehold, New Jersey. And what were you doing when we interrupted you? We just had lunch at the Ugly Mug, and now we’re enjoying some Kohr’s Brothers custard. What are you up to today? We came down to Wildwood to look at some rentals and I talked Diane into coming to Cape May for the afternoon. Just like I had to twist her arm to get this ice cream. Well, Cape May is better than Wildwood any day. Yes, and it’s a beautiful day. This week, the theme of our issue is “rainbow.” Do you ladies think there really is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow? [Patty]: I really hope so. [Diane]: Me, too! Sleeping Around
Every week, we test the beds of Cape May’s hotels and inns. This week... The Victorian Motel WHERE IS IT? Centrally located — and we mean it! — at the end of the Washington Street Mall at 223 Congress Place. Park the car, leave your keys in your room and walk to everything, including the one short block to the beach. WHAT IS IT? The modest brick threestory motel looks like a mid-century throwback — not that that isn’t utterly charming in its own right — but you know better than to judge a book by its cover, right? Don’t let the modesty of the outside fool you. Every single room has been updated in the past year. And we couldn’t get over the cleanliness — the place is positively spotless. WHO RUNS IT? The Victorian has been run for the past eight years by the husbandand-wife team of John and Suzanne Cooke and their loyal, friendly staff. John and Suzanne met while working at the Franklin Plaza Hotel in Philadelphia, and take their work very seriously. It shows. HOW MANY ROOMS? There are a total of 38 rooms, ranging from your basic deluxe motel room to one- and two-room efficiency suites to deluxe king rooms.
WHAT’S THE VIBE? The vibe is clean comfort in a prime location. Our two-room efficiency suite (room 203) reminded us of a little pied-a-terre, complete with a granite countertop kitchenette equipped with a two-burner cooktop, refrigerator, coffee pot, microwave, toaster, and dishware. AMENITIES? You’ll find on-site parking, climate-controlled rooms, flat-screen televisions, daily housekeeping, a secondfloor sundeck, shuffleboard, vending and ice machines, wi-fi, and our personal favorite, a pool (which is open from Memorial Day to the end of September).
WHAT’S THE BED LIKE? We had two comfy beds in our suite, with a large modern headboard, and there was also a pullout sofa in our two-room efficiency suite. INSIDER TIP: The Victorian is open all year, and that’s a good thing, because at the time of this writing, it is practically booked solid for the entire summer. That’s no surprise, considering The Victorian’s rock-bottom rates, prime location, and eat-off-the-f loor cleanliness. Dick at the front desk tells us folks book for the following year when they check out, citing those very reasons. It’s a popular spot for Coast Guard families from all over the country; you’ll find them checking in Thursday evenings for the Friday graduation ceremonies held at the base. The Victorian was voted Best of Cape May in 2010 for Kid-Friendly Accommodations, and is rated number one hotel in Cape May on Trip Advisor. RANDOM FACT: John tells us that the beds in the rooms are custom-made in Connecticut. CONTACT INFO: Call (609) 884-7044, or visit www.victorianmotel.com

EACH week, Exit Zero will be ambushing unsuspecting and deserving citizens with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from a local florist. All you have to do is answer a question or two by our roving photographer, Gabi Urda. This week’s lucky recipients are Taylor Smith and Nikki Kramer, who were ambushed while sitting on the beach on a gorgeous afternoon. Where are you from? Cape May. Occupation: We don’t have occupations — we just live. What were you doing when we interrupted? Just hanging out on the beach before it gets too crowded. When is the last time you got some flowers? Just last month — on Valentine’s Day. PHOTO BY GABI URDA... FLOWERS BY CAPE WINDS

The Cape May Crossword
None of that generic nonsense you see in other papers... a puzzle just for “Exit Zero”! By Kate Chadwick SO YOU love crosswords? Great. Sit down, get a cup (or glass) of your favorite beverage, relax and enjoy this puzzle. The answers to the crossword are all related to our themed issue, which is Rainbow. The solution can be found on the front page of our website, exitzero.us. ACROSS 1 . Approximately 50,000 homosexuals killed in concentration camps were forced to wear this, now a symbol for gays worldwide. 3. Dorothy runs away from home in The Wizard of Oz after getting into a spat with this nasty lady. 6. The Answer Lady
T
Wise answers to perplexing questions
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady My husband has had the same best friend since childhood. He’s a great guy and I like him a lot. His wife, however, is a witch. As an example, she called the house recently, and instead of saying, “Hi, Sally – it’s Esmerelda. Is Harry there?” she just asked for Harry without even identifying herself, much less greeting me. We ran into them recently at a viewing, and she said to me “your new glasses actually make you look smart.” Grrr. I don’t want to get into a public spat with this woman, and I certainly can’t ask my husband to stop socializing with his best friend, but come on. — Simmering Dear Simmering The unfortunate thing about socializing in pairs is that a couple is a package deal. The Answer Lady has a friend whose father is on his fourth wife. The friend liked the first
one, but it’s been downhill ever since. But if the friend wants to maintain a civilized relationship with her father (and let us be civilized or die), she must at least be civil to his wife. The Answer Lady thinks of this as the Yoko Ono Syndrome. The Answer Lady loved John Lennon; Yoko, however, not so much. But if HE loved her, then she must be lovable somehow, so the Answer Lady tolerates her (which, no doubt, thrills Yoko to pieces). Anyway, what we are laboring to say here is that there must be some semblance of
lovability in this woman, or your husband’s friend would not have tethered himself to her for all eternity (unless he is a masochist, which is a topic for another column). Fortunately for you, you are not tethered to her for all eternity; you simply must make nice with her occasionally from across the dinner table at the random social occasion. Which, the Answer Lady suggests you should try to make at the most civilized venues as possible, for your own sake – The Washington Inn, The Merion Inn, etc. Dear Answer Lady What is it with the trend of people walking around in their pajamas lately? Please comment – am I a fuddy-duddy, or is this as alarming to you as it is to me? – Befuddled Dear Befuddled If your disdain for the collective habit of strolling around in one’s pajamas makes you a fuddy-duddy, then the Answer Lady is the fuddiest of duddies. The Answer Lady believes that anyone spotted outdoors in their pajamas for more than thirty seconds should be promptly arrested.

The Old Fogey
D
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
O YOU remember when Cape May had its own permanent rainbow? I suppose not, unless of course you are a member of our “Fraternie Eternal” club, who meet once a year at a top secret location to imbibe the waters of the Fountain Of Eternal Youth. It was a damn fine thing, the Cape May Rainbow: we had a pump installed on top of the city’s new Crystal Palace (also sadly no longer with us) and shifts of Irish navies, horses and elephants (the herd was a gift from the Indian warlord Surat Khan, and we had to put them to good use) powered and turned it so that it always sprayed across the face of the sun. The rainbow was a wonder of the modern world, each band of color a full one hundred yards across and so vivid it was as if the sky was painted by hand. Indeed, incredulous people used to come from far and wide to scurry around at the base, looking for pots of gold: we had to bus them to the city limits every evening, damp and feverish. It also had the wonderful effect of
spraying the entire town center with a fine cooling mist, though the rainbow effect was so strong that the mist had a color tint to it, and people tended to be variously hued like the seven colors of the rainbow by the end of the day. I actually thought that added a touch of gaiety to the city, even when my white solar suit was one day reduced to a startling blue, along with my best powdered wig and my face: when I took off my spectacles I resembled an azure raccoon. That rainbow was, I should mention,
the beginning of the marvelous Cape Gay: the lads and lasses flocked to us like toned, delightful moths to a flame, and the city’s Rainbow Parties were legendary: I shall not begin to tell you the weird and wonderful color combinations on display on those muscular near-naked bodies come morning. So successful was the rainbow that we even had the city eventually adopt it as the official logo. Sadly, what we had not factored in was the water usage: some million gallons a day, and after several months, when we upped the size of the rainbow so that it could be easily seen for some 30 miles around, the result was a drop in the water table so severe that the whole of Cape May fell 10 feet literally overnight and slipped sideways so severely that the canal was formed which now separates us from the mainland. That night, the rainbow was stilled forever, but I do like to think, whenever I see an extremely elderly person with suspiciously green skin, or some young Gay lovers stepping out on Beach Avenue, that the rainbow will live here in Cape May forever.

Activity Of The Week
C
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Diversity weekend
ELEBRATE diversity with GABLES of Cape May County! GABLES, the “gay group doing good things for the entire community,” presents its annual diversity weekend March 24-25. The highlight is “Bait and Swish: the Deep End,” an evening of “out-there comedy” on March 24. Founded in 1995, GABLES is an awardwinning, not-for-profit whose mission is to “promote, secure, enhance and protect the human dignity, integrity and legal and political rights of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender persons.” GABLES sponsors anti-bullying initiatives, provides speakers on GLBT topics, and has raised an estimated $100,000 for charitable community groups like Volunteers in Medicine. Their comprehensive tourist guide, the “Southern Shores Rainbow Directory,” focusing on gay-friendly businesses, is a valuable reference for all tourists seeking information about Cape May and the surrounding communities. Buy your “Bait and Swish: the Deep End” tickets in advance - a limited number are available at the door, but the event usually
sells out. Call 609-861-1848 for information, or buy online at gablescapemay.com. Admission is $25. This year’s location is Marq’s Pub and Restaurant, in the Marquis de Lafayette hotel, 501 Beach Avenue. Doors — and the cash bar— open at 6:30, the show begins at 8. The host is Mimi Gonzalez, a “highoctane comedian who takes the audience on
a wild ride from the profound to the profane.” Gonzalez has entertained US soldiers around the world, hosted radio shows and performed on television. She is also a columnist and a walnut farmer, so things may get a little nutty! Contributing to the nuttiness will be headliner Brad Loekle, a columnist, radio host and television talent, who may be best known for his hilarious contributions to the “World’s Dumbest” show on TruTV. Rounding out the evening is mentalist Sam Eaton, taking a break from his New York City show, “The Quantum Eye.” Eaton’s “magic” involves humor along with calculation and memorization, particularly staggering to those of us who can’t remember where we parked the car. And you have to love a mind reader who credits his dog with teaching him the power of non-verbal communication. There is a Karaoke After Party, and on Sunday, you’re invited to a tour and tasting at Cape May Winery from noon-5pm — it’s free with your Bait and Swish ticket. Ask about special rates at the Marquis de Lafayette for Diversity Weekend ticket holders. Next week: Singer/Songwriter Cape May

LOWER Cape May Regional senior Nismah Osman is turning Cape May into a place where stars are born. She has had great luck with her many successes in the music industry thus far in her young career. Not only have her songs been featured in television and film, but you can also find her music on iTunes. With the support of her parents Denise Venturini and Dahy Osman, Nismah believes that “anything other than hard work is not an option.” Osman can be considered a Renaissance woman, as she is a part of National Honor Society, Peer Leaders, Mock Trial, Tri-M, and she also has a starring role in LCMR’s musical The Pajama Game. In order to expand her vocal abilities, Osman took voice lessons and has been in choir throughout her high school career. In the future, Osman will be attending college to study theology, and is hoping to be accepted into the Berkeley College of Music. As for her back-up plan, Osman does not have one. “People use back-up plans as a crutch, and if your only option is success, then you will be successful,” said Osman. For more information on Osman and her music, you can visit her website at www.nismahosman.com. BY JESS NAGEL/ PHOTOGRAPH BY JACKSON SOLE

PAINT THE RAINBOW!
You’ve heard the phrase “taste the rainbow”? Well now you can “paint” the rainbow, from just ONE can of specially formulated “ROYGBIV” paint. Designed for the Space Shuttle to allow for any light reflection the sun could throw at it, the paint is really just the perfect reflector, but with one of silver’s issues of glare. Not only will ROYGBIV paint prevent any overheating, it looks simply stunning. Note: you will need to paint in precise strokes to keep the rainbow colors from mixing and looking like regular paint.
Just $34 for a full gallon can! Or $75 for two cans!

EVE is a young, energetic and smaller girl patiently awaiting a forever home. She wouldn’t be the best fit for a home with cats, but she gets along great with other dogs. Because of her high energy, she is a bit clumsy, and would do best in a home without smaller kids. A little training and enough exercise could make Eve the perfect dog! Stop in at the shelter and give Eve a second chance. The adoption fee is $95.
«
PENNY’S owners couldn’t take care of her any more. She is used to other dogs, but is a nervous girl, and gets anxious when touched. She’s sweet and learning to love, she just needs time to get to know you. She’s had some training and knows a few commands. She’d be best in a home with older kids and no cats. If you can spare some love for Penny, stop in to see her. The adoption fee is $95.

DIESEL was recently turned in to the shelter because his owners could no longer care for him. He came from a home with other dogs, so should be okay with them, though he tends to be dominant, and will probably be the alpha dog. He’s very sweet and even knows a few tricks. He would be best in a home with older kids, if any, and is not good with cats. If you think you’d love a guy like Diesel, visit him. The adoption fee is $95.

Cape May’s Mariners Hall DEDICATED TO CAPE MAY’S MARITIME HISTORY
We can do it with your help - please sign our petition! There has been a lot of anger and frustration over the new “Convention Hall” being built. Many lines have been drawn in the sand, people are genuinely upset and the city of Cape May’s reputation has suffered. One thing we can all agree upon, however, is our admiration and respect for the mariners who operate off the coast of Cape May. From the earliest days of Cape May’s maritime history, sailors and fishermen have pulled out of Cape May ports, never to return home. We seek to honor them. Please sign this petition to name the new Cape May community center “Mariners Hall” in honor of the many mariners who have lost their lives and those who continue to risk their own each day. To sign, go to www.change.org and search for “Cape May”. The petition is at the top.

AFFODILS are nodding in the Cape May breeze and forsythia have added a golden glow to the light. Spring has begun, and Cape May Stage is gearing up for our twenty-fourth season of bringing the best in theatre to our town. We begin our season with the East Coast premiere of Uncle Jacques’ Symphony, which won the Best New Play Los Angeles Ovation Award, and, for its creator and solo performer, Dominic Hoffman, Best Actor Los Angeles Ovation Award. The play moved to San Francisco, where it won more accolades and more awards. “Irresistibly funny and poignant” is how the San Francisco Chronicle describes the play. At the International Fringe Festival, it won “Five Stars, five stars made of gold, encrusted with diamonds, a supreme dose of theatre

The laughs continue on June 11, when we bring a musical laugh riot to our Second Stage with At Wit’s End, which celebrates the life of bad boy Oscar Levant, who said such outrageous things that he was banned from television for a time. But not from Cape May Stage. So come take a look — it’s always a treat to be in our newly refurbished theatre. Call 884-1341 or visit capemaystage.org for information or to purchase your tickets. Bird Droppings
I
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
’M A bit surprised at the number of people that we’ve been welcoming to the Cape May Bird Observatory’s Northwood Center who weren’t birders when they walked in the door. Not so much surprised over the number of people, although it is a bit early for hordes of spring birders. More surprised by the number of non-birders for this time of year. Usually don’t see those folks until mid-July when summer vacation is in full swing and they’ve had enough sun and sand. Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for stopping in and being so friendly and being so interested in all the birds you didn’t know were at the feeders outside our windows. You weren’t birders, at least not yet, and you were just browsing around the store and happened to look out the window and…WOW…”lookitallthebirdsouthere”! Birds like Brown Thrasher, Carolina Chickadee, Tufted Titmouse, Northern Cardinal (more than we could count), Fox Sparrow, White-throated Sparrow,
American Goldfinch, House Finch, Common Grackle, Red-winged Blackbird, to name a few. We could have shown you a few more species if we’d gone outside but didn’t want to rush you out too quickly. You were enjoying yourselves so much, there wasn’t much reason. Now you might be wondering why I’m thanking you? Well, maybe you bought a
trinket or postcard, or t-shirt, or … maybe you became a member … or bought your first pair of binoculars. Whatever you did — or didn’t do — you first walked into our center and opened your eyes to the natural world. All the color. All the animation. All the life that breaths life into a landscape. It’s why people feed birds, after all. All that, and helping birds get through some trying times. See, I’ve been watching birds since some guy named Eisenhower was president. I’ve seen millions of sparrows. Thousands of House Finch. Hundreds of cardinals and towhees. You never stop enjoying them but you do, over time, stop uttering the WOW word every time you see a House Finch. It’s a human defense mechanism. If you were struck dumb every time you saw a House Finch (one of North America’s most common species), we’d probably spend the rest of our lives just standing

Bird Droppings ? From Page 75 in one place with our collective mouths open. Actually I wouldn’t mind that. It would be pretty cool to go through life with your brain pegged in the WOW zone of existence. You know — like a little kid in the candy store with no spending limit and no food allergies. This is kind of what birding is like. Except sometimes you have to sleep or make money so you can go birding in Ecuador or Tanzania or someplace where birds are as common as they are in Cape May (except they are, for the most part, different birds, so you get a WOW fix). No matter how long you’ve been birding, you’re still in it for the WOW. But being new birders (whether you realize it or not, you just crossed the line), every bird you see rates a WOW reaction. What I’m doing is thanking you for sharing the WOW. When experienced birders stand next to new birders, we get to share the WOW. It’s not as good as being a new birder, but it is pretty darn close. Are you in need of a WOW fix? Then head over to the Cape May Bird
The Cape May Bird Observatory in Cape May Point is browser-friendly — for books OR birds. Observatory — THE place for all your nature needs. Or consider joining Pete on a Monday morning walk through the South Cape May Meadows, where he can personally hear those WOW’s you’ll be exclaiming! The walk meets every Monday morning at 7:30 am in The Nature Conservancy parking lot on Sunset Boulevard. Cape May Bird Observatory is located at 701 East Lake Drive, overlooking Lake Lily in beautiful Cape May Point (609.884.2736), and is open 9:30am to 4:30pm every day. Our staff are always
available to help with any questions. While you are there, scan the bookshelves for some bargains in the used and vintage books section, look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise including a terrific lithograph done just for the Cape May Bird Observatory, or just browse around. Pick up a free schedule, birding map and checklist. Take a look at the sighting sheets to check what’s being seen out in the field, check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars or, if it’s not a typical March day, sit outside on our garden benches and enjoy the birds at the feeders and the view of Lake Lily. If you can’t make it in person, you can also visit us online www.BirdCapeMay. org — where birding Cape May is only a click away! Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.

The Dating Column
L
Stella Dixon’s take on romance on Old Cape Island
AST week, my computer broke. I called a Dell technician who told me to take out the battery. Tap on F7. Boot up in safe mode. Put my right hand in and do the hokey pokey. But to no avail. “None of this is working,” I told the man, as my computer made scary fizzling noises. “That’s not a problem,” he responded, before offering troubleshooting move number six. “Still not working,” I said. “That’s not a problem,” he told me again, on the heels of more troubleshooting advice. “Still nothing,” I said — an hour-and-ahalf and lots of scary fizzling noises in. “That’s not a problem.” Approximately 13 that’s-not-a-problem responses later, I was beginning to doubt the credibility of this so-called computer technician. Perhaps I had accidentally called Blue Moon pizza and the kids behind the counter were having a grand old time at my expense. “I’m about to throw this laptop out the window,” I told him. “That’s not a problem.”
Finally, the monitor lit up. Hieroglyphicesque symbols flashed across the screen. Then, all went black. Scary fizzling ceased. “Well,” computer man told me, ”that’s... a problem.” Oddly — even though this was the confirmation that my $2,000 purchase was mega-biting the dust — I felt relief. Sometimes, admitting you have a problem is the first step toward picking up the fizzledout pieces and moving on.
As I waited for a new Dell technician to arrive at my house, I got to thinking about relationships. Sometimes, they’re a lot like a fried hard drive. You have no back-up plan, because you didn’t picture this thing failing. You’ve seen the red flags, sure. You’ve seen the fizzling out happen right before your eyes. But you tell yourself there is no problem here. This can be fixed. This has to be fixed. Because if this is fried, you are fried. There is no problem here. Until one day, for whatever reason, we can’t try anymore. It doesn’t matter how much we’ve invested, or how much this thing has cost us. It’s fried. “You’re computer is jacked,” computer technician number two told me. Imagine that. All that time. All that work. Gone forever. Just like that. “But maybe you’ll go out with me anyway,” he said, handing me his phone number. So there’s that. Relationships, kind of like hard drives, are more fragile than we’d like to admit. In the end, the investement is always a risky one. It may never be worth it. But...maybe I’ll go out with him anyway.
