Subscriber Of The Week
Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Sharon Ashbridge of Cape May. (Yes, locals, you can subscribe!) How long have you been visiting Cape May? Over 40 years. I used to come with my family, met my husband Tom, who is a bartender at the Lobster House in 1989, and moved here then. We married in 1995. Favorite thing about Cape May? Friendly faces. It’s a close-knit community and generous community, where people helping people is a way of life. Least favorite thing? I really can’t think of a least favorite thing. Favorite restaurants? We’re fortunate to have so many excellent restaurants here. It’s difficult to choose favorites; however, I would say the Pier House and Union Park. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? It would definitely be the parking situation. I feel the city should erect a low-rise parking garage with a facade to compliment the Victorian architecture — it would be a great addition. Favorite thing about Exit Zero? Flipping through it looking for familiar faces. Least favorite thing about Exit Zero? I don’t have one —I look forward to each issue! What’s your T-shirt size? I’ll take a large — for my hubby!
Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Kate Chadwick. If you think you know what establishment this is, you could win a gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter at facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!
Quotes Of The Week
Random Factoid
“It may be the cock that crows, but it is the hen that lays the eggs.” — Margaret Thatcher “The way to become rich is to put all your eggs in one basket and then watch that basket.” — Andrew Carnegie “Gentleness doesn’t get work done unless you happen to be a hen laying eggs.” — Coco Chanel
A HEN requires 24 to 26 hours to produce an egg. A mere 30 minutes later, she starts all over again. Hens with white feathers and ear lobes produce white shelled eggs, and hens with red or brown feathers and red ear lobes produce brown shelled eggs. Also, as the hen ages, the size of the egg increases.

Upcoming can’t-miss events around town...mark your calendars
EGIN your Earth Day celebration early this year with a Meet The Artist Reception at the Harbor Gallery, located at the Nature Center of Cape May. The reception is this Friday, April 6 at 6pm, and you can meet artists Susan Zipper and Pam Huber. Whether you call it recycling, reusing or repurposing, these talented local artists use bits and pieces of things otherwise destined to become trash to create amazing works of art. Some pieces are purely decorative, and other pieces, such as switch plates, mirrors and bird baths, are functional as well. All artwork is for sale, with a portion going to support the Nature Center. The Nature Center is located at 1600 Delaware Avenue. Light refreshments will be served at the reception, and the exhibit will continue through the end of the month. For more information, please call 609-884-2736. The Cape May Artists Cooperative will feature the works of local artists Anita Roth and Cindy Mahoney at the West End Garage from April 7 through May 4, 2012. A reception to meet the artists will be
³
held on Sunday, April 15, from 1-5pm, and refreshments will be served. Anita Roth is a self-taught photographer and likes to work with macro focus (or very close up), showing details in everyday objects such as flowers and shells. Cindy Mahoney makes jewelry that is truly wearable art, taking her inspiration from nature and the elements. The Artists’ Cooperative Gallery is a group of local artists who’ve joined together to showcase and sell their work, and to educate the public about their various art forms. Please call 609-770-8261 for more information. THE US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 82 offers a New Jersey Boating Safety Course at the USCG Training Center on Saturday, April 28, with additional courses offered once a month through August. This course is required for all Vessel Operators and Personal Water Craft operators in the state of New Jersey, and the cost of the course is $45. Lunch is provided. Call 609-898-0442 for more information. THE Lower Township Library features three members of the Cape May Artists Cooperative during the month of
³
³
April. Betty Campbell, a local artist most well-known for her wood turning, has more recently turned to pastels to express herself, capturing the colors of vibrant sunsets along the Delaware Bay. Patricia Neville, a native of Cape May County, has been a high school art teacher for 19 years and is an active member of several local artist groups. Her works include paintings and hand built slab pottery, each piece a connection to her life experience living at the shore. Jody Swope is a mixed media artist, known for her distinctive style of folk art and “mini world” constructions. Her award-winning work as been exhibited in museums throughout the Philadelphia and South Jersey areas. Jody integrates driftwood, shells, glass, metal and other recycled objects into original and one-of-a-kind folk art. The Lower Township Library is a located at 2600 Bayshore Road in the Villas section of the township, and is open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9am to 8pm; Tuesday and Friday from 9am to 5pm and Saturday from 9am to 4:30pm. Talk Of The Town
Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
City Gets A Tuneup CALL us crazy… but we were happy to find trouble finding parking last Friday night. Okay, it was nothing compared to the hassle of finding a spot on a summer weekend — but it was more trouble than we would have had if the fifth annual Singer Songwriter Cape May festival had not woken this place up from its sleepy off-season. The town was crowded with performers (around 175 of them), and eager spectators — at least three of them with purple, rock ’n’ roll hair. We pulled into the Congress Hall lot and headed to Martini Beach to fuel up before settling on a venue, and we were thrilled to see some Indian items on the menu; Cape May might be the restaurant capital of south Jersey, but we think the lack of Indian options here speaks to a gaping culinary hole. Server Anthony Barra served us our tasty duck samosa and marsala meatballs with a smile, but legendary Exit Zero photographer Maciek Nabrdalik, who’s visiting from Poland, gave him a hard time anyway. (Our apologies, Anthony — apparently, this passes for humor in Poland.) Back at Congress Hall, we caught up with the event’s organizer, Pittsburgh resident John Harris, who seemed slightly annoyed when we referred to Singer Songwriter Cape May as a “festival.” “It’s a conference,” he explained. (Sorry, John, but festival is a much sexier word, and we’re sticking with it.) “During the day, the performers and those with interest in the music industry can meet promoters, agents, producers and managers. They learn how to write better, how to copyright
their music, and how to make it in this business.” John also mentioned that this festival/conference is free because “it’s not about the money, it’s about the music.” (Except in the Congress Hall ballroom, where it’s $10 to see the headliners… which is probably why, with 18 other venues to choose from, these seats were sparsely filled.) There was nothing sparse about the crowd downstairs in the Boiler Room, however. A Los Angeles based band called Xenia Dunford and the Eastern Fire surprised us with their jazz/blues/pop/folk mix. “Cape May is a beautiful scene,” lead singer Xenia Dunford told us. (And no, that’s not a stage name.) “When you can play in a magical space, that makes it all the more special for Scotty, Adam, Forrest and I.” (And no, Forrest isn’t a stage name, either.) Perhaps when you’re born with monikers like Xenia and Forrest, you’re destined to be on stage? We found a spot at the bar next to Patrick Logue, Operations Director for Cape Resorts Group, owners of Congress Hall et al, who said that, although Singer Songwriter Cape May isn’t yet in the same league as the Millenium Music Conference in Pittsburgh or South by Southwest in Texas, “it’s unprecedented for south Jersey. You could conceivably be watching the next up-and-coming Taylor Swift or Rufus Wainwright here.” Outside of The Blue Pig Tavern a little later, we met some of Xenia’s fans, who’d come from Philadelphia, Texas, Massachusetts and Hawaii. And because the fan from Hawaii — who lives down the street from “that bounty hunter who’s on television” — went through such great
pains to write his name for us correctly (Clarence Kalaleno Ape’o’lanai Kauila) and phonetically (that last name is pronounced “cow-we-la”), we feel obliged to print it. We’d also like to thank the mother of guitarist Scotty Mlodzinsk for instructing us to “be nice” in our article because “journalists aren’t always nice.” We love a mom who sticks up for her son… even if it does compromise that rock and roll image of his. Speaking of rock ’n’ roll image, this was about the time Greg Bennett, Congress Hall’s manager on duty, came outside to shush us. “You must be doing a lot of that this weekend with all of these rowdy rock stars around,” we said. “Nah,” he told us. “It’s nice to have such a fun, young crowd.” For a second dose of well-behaved, talented musicians, we caught SS Cape May on Saturday, too — this time with artist Victor Grasso, who has recently started braiding his beard. “Can someone please unbraid my husband,” his wife Alicia, marketing director for Cape May Stage, pleaded before leaving the house. Maciek tagged along again as well, even though “it’s too loud.” (Still cranky about having to go back to Poland, obviously.) We hit up The Brown Room first, where Arlan Feiles was on the piano. His beautiful wife, Kate, told us that she and her husband are planning a trip back to Cape May this summer, “based entirely on this experience.” They live in Matawan, NJ, but Arlan is from Los Angeles, and he’d never before been on Cape Island. “But he married a Jersey girl,” Kate said, “so he’s here to stay now.” The couple are raising a little Jersey girl who, at five-and-a-half months, was

THE EXIT ZERO CARTOON... By Laurie Bender
WHEN ROCK COMES TO TOWN... SINGER SONGWRITER CAPE MAY Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 the youngest person in The Brown Room. (Young but, in her leopard-print stroller, not too young to look like a little rock and roll diva herself.) Inside Cabanas was another young crowd. This, John Harris, told us, is a “specific goal” of the conference. “We have performers ranging in age from 17 to 82, but twenty and thirty-somethings are especially drawn here.” Some of these young people — Justine Malloy from Philadelphia, and her friends Dillon and Zack Mullock of Cape May National Golf Club — told us how disappointed they are that their friend’s band, Up The Game, hadn’t shown. (They also suggested that Exit Zero “call them out” in print, and since we’re never shy about calling anyone out, we agreed.) We find it surprising that a band wouldn’t have shown, as we get the picture this is a very competitive event. “Interested performers start submitting music to sites
like ReverbNation and Sonicbids in June or July through the end of the year,” John told us. “Then I go through them. This year, we had bands coming from California, France, even Australia.” So how big is Singer Songwriter going to get? John told us not to worry. “It won’t get so big that it’s no longer free.”
Timeout With Terry WE STOPPED by the Depot Market Café to buy Terry Brown a celebratory ice tea. In March, after 35 years and four months as Civic Affairs Director for Cape May City — it was his first job after graduating from Slippery Rock University, in Pennsylvania — Terry retired. Well, kind of. He told us that he might still volunteer for the city, and that he might still act as MC for the Halloween Parade he was largely responsible for launching. “I have too much energy to be retired,” he told us. (In addition to his full-time job, he served on the Lower Township Elementary school board
from 1981 to 2011, and on the Southern Shore Regional Tourism Council.) Plus, he really loved his job. Which is saying something, considering that Terry’s average work week inseason was around 50 hours, sometimes more. And also considering that when crises struck — like that time the roof of convention hall blew off in the middle of the night — it was Terry the mayor called. (Or maybe it was the city manager who called him. Sorry, we couldn’t resist.) It’s not hard to see why. Being Civic Affairs Director is all about communicating with tourists and locals, and Terry is well-suited for it. He’s a people person. Most of our interaction with him up until this point had involved us pestering him for different event calendars, and yet, we chatted like old friends… about everything from Terry’s first job (newspaper delivery boy) to his worst job (working in a steel foundry in 90-degree heat). “It was the middle of summer. What was I thinking?” But what we really wanted to know is how Terry will spend his retirement. In addition to attending every concert he can at the new Convention Hall, he’s going to travel. “I’d like to go to Washington State and the Florida Keys.” But first? Terry’s going turkey hunting. “First you have to find them,” he told us. “And then you have to call them.” How? “With turkey callers.” Ah, of course. “It’s very difficult because they have very keen senses.” Terry’s always been a big hunter, even after that time he got lost in the mountains of Colorado… in the middle of a blizzard… after his guide blew his knee out… 60 miles from the nearest town. “The mountain lion tracks were a little unnerving,” he told us. Now, he hunts with his two beagles, Charlie (who’s 13 years old and, like his owner, partly retired) and Ben. We agree with Terry that people names for puppies are far superior to silly dog names. “You can’t be in the woods,” he told us, “in front of a bunch of macho guys saying, ‘Here, Pancake.’” But Terry has no problem stopping in front of his macho hunting buddies to pick up trash. “Litter is my biggest pet peeve.” But Terry is most excited to spend some more time with his wife, Debbie, who he met on the beach in Wildwood when he was 23 years old, and his 28-year-old daughter, Tracy, both of whom are local teachers. “They make me so proud,” he told us. As for the two gentlemen now handling

A Sweet Time Of Year WORKING on the theory that the Easter bunny, like Santa, only visits those who have been good all year, we decided to hedge our bets with a visit to the Original Fudge Kitchen on the Washington Street Mall for our candy loot. And apparently we’re not the only ones. According to salesman Jim McHugh, Easter is the biggest holiday for the always-busy folks at the Fudge Kitchen. “It’s definitely our busiest ‘candy’ holiday,” Jim says. “At Christmas, for instance, you can get all kinds of gifts. But at Easter, it’s just all about the candy — it’s simply a tradition with our customers.” So we had to ask — what’s their biggest-selling egg at this time of year? “It’s
the dark chocolate coconut cream egg, hands-down,” says Big Cheese (or is it Big Bunny?), Joe Bogle. “In order, it goes dark chocolate coconut egg, followed by the peanut butter egg, followed by the butter cream. But I’d say the coconut outsells the other two by probably a twoto-one margin.”
And although the chocolate eggs are the biggest sellers, they’re not the only game in town. Jelly beans, speckled malted eggs, and chocolate bunnies are all available to fill your basket. And here’s a question — how could one improve upon Peeps, those yummy little marshmallow chicks? The Fudge Kitchen does it by dipping them in chocolate, a stroke of confectionary genius if ever we’ve seen one. And don’t forget — the Original Fudge Kitchen ships anywhere. Jim tells us they’ve shipped Easter baskets as far away as California and Alaska. “We have really loyal customers,” Jim says. “They come in year in and year out, and they’ll order up 10 chocolate Easter eggs with names printed on them for the grandchildren. They say that the kids have come to expect an Easter egg from the Fudge Kitchen in their basket, or they’re disappointed. The kid just happens to be 35 years old.”
PARTING SHOT Kudos
to Cape May’s chamber of commerce for their revamped website (capemaychamber.com). It has a particularly useful events guide and a panache and clarity that we would like to see on the city’s official site (capemay.org), which truly is a bush league effort. And we know something about lame websites — our own is about to receive an overdue relaunch.

A CAPE MAY COUNTY TRADITION FOR 25 YEARS
WHY would someone poach an egg? It’s not like eggs are a rare and valuable resource... so why steal them? – Villas *** REALLY... a nursery rhyme that has a giant egg that falls off a wall in which all of the kings horses and men can’t fix. Ooh... poor Humpty Dumpty. Just fry that egg up and make an omelette already! – Villas *** I THINK we should lock up eggs benedict as he was a traitor to our country! - Cape May *** WHEN breakfast tastes good I like to say it is EGGSHELLENT! – Erma *** I’VE NEVER ordered it but I love to say Egg Foo Young! – West Cape May *** WHEN IS someone going to breed a hen to lay colorful eggs? Then we won’t have to dye them for Easter! – Cape May *** SERIOUSLY... can someone tell me what the heck is really in Egg Nog? And what exactly is nog? Can you make a fruit nog if you wanted to be more healthy? – Cape May *** I DON’T care if you call it a century egg, hundred year egg, thousand year egg or a millennium egg... I’m not eating it! – Cape May *** SHOULDN’T we really call it the “egg clear” as opposed to the “egg white?” Because it

really is clear... at least until you cook it! – Erma *** IS THERE anywhere you can order a Scotch egg? I really enjoyed mine at the Exit Zero Burns Supper! – Erma *** WHEN I have sunny side up eggs at a restaurant, I prefer to order them by saying “two eggs looking back at me!” – Cape May *** SOMETIMES when I’m bored I try to unscramble my eggs... much like a word scramble puzzle! I have yet to be successful but one day!– Cape May *** I DON’T like deviled eggs... I think they’ve sinned too much! – West Cape May *** IT WOULD be kind of fitting if someone actually dropped their egg drop soup! – Erma

A Moment In History
T
Historical Editor Ben Miller looks at government structure in Cape May
HIS 1960 article from the Trenton Evening Times marks the end of Cape May’s City Commissioners and the beginning of the Council/ City Manager form of government. Contrary to what the commissioners said in their statement to the paper, the south never rose again and they were gone for good. The change came as a result of a referendum led by Walter C. Wright Jr, later voted Mayor of Cape May. The new government called for a Council with Mayor, mostly ceremonial, and a City Manager, who exercised executive control. It’s nearly identical to the MayorCouncil-Administrator form of government created by the second Faulkner Act in 1981, and voted the official Cape May leadership structure in 2004. It seems the current City Manager and Council have ceded control of the city to Mayor Ed Mahaney, though the municipal code says he has no more power than any other Councilman: “The Mayor shall perform such ceremonial functions as are traditionally allocated to persons holding the title of ‘Mayor.’”

The Movie Column
I
By Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival
T’S like Lord of the Flies meets Gladiator — children running amok, this time at the command (and for the amusement) of adults. The Hunger Games is a disturbing sci-fi story of an evil civilization that was once North America. As punishment for an uprising that took place 75 years earlier, the rulers of this (let’s hope very) imaginary world choose by lottery two children ages 12-18 from each district in the land to… well, brutally kill one another until only one survivor remains. Did I say it’s disturbing? Oh, yes — right in the first paragraph. Good. Am I a prude, the only moviegoer who doesn’t like seeing children violently killed even if it’s “just a movie”? The film is getting rave reviews from critics and audiences—when I saw it, the theater was alive with applause, “ooohs” and “aahhs.” And with lit up cell phones—really, can we put them down for a two-hour stretch? But I don’t want to chastise these kids for using cell phones. No, I want to tell them life isn’t that bad, and a film about
The Hunger Games, starring Jennifer Lawrence, has become a phenomenon children killing each other for sport isn’t, well… acceptable. A violent movie can have as many fatalities as it wants so long as the first one isn’t its premise. And when you carry this film’s f lawed premise to certain points, some actions don’t ring true. Would alliances really be formed among players whose goal is the certain

death of every other player? It’s only the first of many examples where characters’ motivation comes into question. We must suspend disbelief when experiencing any story, but outright cancel your subscription to a belief system before seeing The Hunger Games. There were moments of self-sacrifice and honor that rose above the violence to teach important lessons, but they weren’t enough to make the film’s harshness more palatable. The actors’ performances were very good: Jennifer Lawrence, whose breakthrough role was 2010’s Winter’s Bone (nominated for Oscar’s Best Picture) and Josh Hutcherson of 2010’s The Kids Are All Right (also a Best Picture nominee). Woody Harrelson, Lenny Kravitz, Elizabeth Banks, and Donald Sutherland all deliver good performances in supporting roles. Few critics have panned this film, and those who did for reasons other than mine. So I stand alone, not new for me. As always, I appreciate your feedback (disagreement?); email capemayfilm@ hotmail.com.

What’s Your Story?
Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here? Who are you? My name is Tom Brown. It really is! And I like to say that I have a wife named Jane and a dog named Spot, but that’s not really true. Where are you from? I live in Spencer, Massachusetts. And what were you doing when we interrupted you? I’m a sales rep for BK Food Specialties, and we carry Jones Soda. I was just here at the Cape May Organic Market talking with Tai [Menz] about it. What’s your best-selling flavor? That would be this one in my hand — Green Apple, hands down. None of our business, but Massachusetts to Cape May is quite the commute. My sales route encompasses most of the east coast. I’m actually here for three nights. The theme of our issue this week is “egg.” Do you eat eggs, and if so, how do you like them? I do like eggs, and I usually get them scrambled — less likely to screw them up that way. Interview by Kate Chadwick PHOTOGRAPH BY GABI URDA... TO ORDER COPIES, PLEASE CALL (609) 770-8479

Open House
Exit Zero tours a local home for rent. This week... 3209 Shore Drive WHERE IS IT? This sunny rental sits on Cape May beach, which isn’t actually in Cape May (who knew?) but 6.2 miles north, in the Villas. WHAT IS IT? It’s a 2,700 square-feet home that’s three stories, custom-made, contemporary and new... it was built in 2005 by local builder Ross Denim. WHO HAS THE LISTING? Theresa Senico of Apex Realty is a resort and second home specialist, a senior real estate specialist (which means she has a lot of experience with “baby boomers and beyond”), an accredited buyer representative, a certified residential specialist, and a certified shortsale and forclosure specialist. HOW MANY ROOMS? There are four bedrooms, all with deck access, a queensize bed and television. (There’s also a pullout couch, for the guests who aren’t going to want to miss out on this). WHAT’S THE VIBE? It’s what a beach home should be... clean and beachy. The dining room (complete with a beautiful mahogany dining set) opens into a mellow yellow living room, with 25-foot ceileings.
(The home is 35 fee high, which is the highest a home in Lower Township can be.) You’ll love the French doors that let in so much natural light, the sliding barn doors which just look cool, the birch wood ceilings, the oak floors, and the wooden spiral staircase. AMENITIES? Most importantly, there is direct water access — your own private pathway to the beach. But if you’re not into sand, try relaxing in the six-person jacuzzi, complete with automatic massager, on the home’s ground-floor patio. (Check out the refrigerator in the garage, in case you don’t

feel like making the trek upstairs to the second-floor kitchen for an ice cold Corona.) There are two composite, non-slip decks on which you can take in the beautiful bay view (and there’s a screened-in room on one, in case the mosquitoes are out.) Rinse off in an outdoor shower, then retire in front of a two-sided gas fireplace. And oh, yea, those are Miele applicances in the kitchen... and a touch-activated stove. INSIDER TIP: On Cape May Beach, there are no restrictions on “walking your dog, jetskiing, whatever you want,” says Theresa. We recommend trying the kayaks that come with the property. RANDOM FACT: Notice the chandelier in the living room. The home’s original owner found it in Pennsylvania before having it restored and brought here; it’s over 100 years old. PRICE: This beauty is $2,850.00 a week, including security deposit... and worth it just for the view. EACH week, Exit Zero will be ambushing unsuspecting and deserving citizens with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from a local florist. All you have to do is answer a question or two by our roving photographer, Gabi Urda. This week’s lucky recipient is Kathy Grant, who was ambushed at the Cape May Wawa. Where are you from? Cape May Court House, New Jersey. Occupation: I’m a family resource specialist. What were you doing when we interrupted? I’m just here getting a cup of my Wawa coffee. When is the last time you got some flowers? Let’s just say that it’s been a really long, long time since I’ve gotten flowers from anybody, so thank you! PHOTO BY GABI URDA... FLOWERS BY CAPE WINDS

The Answer Lady
T
Wise answers to perplexing questions
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I was at a wedding recently, and was standing at the bar when another guest – a man I’ve met once but don’t know well, came up behind me and started chatting. That was fine, but he then proceeded to – um, invade my personal space, practically pinning me up against the bar, acting as if it too crowded and that he didn’t have enough room. I was so annoyed, but I didn’t know what to do. Eventually I managed to extricate myself, but should I have done something more forceful? - Pinned Dear Pinned Once upon a time, when the Answer Lady was young, she worked for a summer as a cocktail server at a night-club in the depths of Wildwood. The Answer Lady was required to wear a uniform that invited all SORTS of unwanted male attention, but also
lots of tip money, so she was able to look the other way — for a while. One evening, however, the Answer Lady was pinned against the bar by a patron in a similar fashion as yours, and then rather aggressively groped. Unfortunately, her response was to pick up two glasses of wine from bar and throw them in the offender’s face. The Answer Lady was subsequently immediately relieved of her waitressing duties, but quite happily removed her high heels and walked home in her short shorts. People can behave badly in
fun, social situations, like night-clubs and weddings, but sometimes a line is crossed. It’s probably best that you didn’t ruin the wedding by acting as the Answer Lady did; it’s always best to remain civilized and not cause a scene. This is why God created highheeled shoes. The next time you find yourself cornered by a tipsy fool, one well-placed heel forcefully applied should do the trick. Dear Answer Lady I am invited to a very fancy wedding at Congress Hall next month, and I’m really excited. However, I don’t really have anything super-nice to wear, and I can’t really afford to run out and spend $100 on a new dress (not if these people want a gift, that is). Suggestions? - Dressed Down Dear Dressed Get over to the Ladies Room consignment shop on Jackson Street. The Answer Lady found herself in a similar situation recently, and found the perfect dress there for a mere $28. Most dressy dresses are usually only worn once or twice before ending up in consignment, and at prices like that, you can get shoes and a purse too.

OWN THE GOOSE THAT LAYS THE GOLDEN EGGS
Advances in genetic engineering have led to an exciting new development in avian egg production. The details would confuse you, so we will sum up: eggs from the Anatidae Aura – the Golden Goose – are actually and genuinely coated in solid gold. Why? Well, the 1-micron-thick golden outer layer is perfect for the International Space Station, where solar radiation can acidentally cook a normal egg in its shell. The gilded eggs reflect the radiation and are perfectly preserved. The Golden Goose is being licensed to selected labs in America, to recoup costs for NASA, and we can offer a fertile specimen for only $300.
Call (609) 770-8479 right now, as stocks are limited Note: the bird must be fed a normal goose-type diet but with enough gold dust sprinklwed in to allow the modified digestive system to make gold eggs.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
DO LIKE an egg in the morning: right after I have my coffee (brewed from beans handpicked from the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro by tenyear-old boys — only their hands are soft enough not to bruise the bean. Well, strictly speaking, so are the doughy hands of really fat people, but they run out of breath on the climb, or get hungry and eat the beans on the way down), my faithful manservant Kitchener strolls manfully off to the basement… hold on Kitchener, you type this exactly as I dictate, or it’ll be a thrashing for you. Right… Kitchener stumbles clownishly… oh come ON Kitchener, you do TOO stumble clownishly, it’s one of your more endearing qualities, so stop pouting. Where was I now? Ah yes, Kitchener then stumbles back with a selection of my Fabergé Eggs to be admired by myself and any guests I have. I have 47 of the eggs, some donated by Nicholas II for services rendered, three purchased from Uncle Joe Stalin for the sum of $200, one seized from the robes of
Rasputin as he slipped beneath the ice, and one snatched from Benito Mussolini as he slept. I am intent on having all 50 of the so-called “Imperial eggs” some day, but the missing three are thought to be aboard the Titanic (which is why it was torpedoed by the Russians) and until I can borrow a suitable submersible from that blowhard movie maker Cameron, there they will stay. Of course, I am less keen on other types of eggs: eggheads have their uses in times of war, and Easter Eggs used to be quite a
delight (until that dreadful incident in the Great Cape May Easter Egg Hunt of 1987 when the Easter Bunny was run over by the beach cleaning tractor as he slept off a bender at 4am). The mess was awful, and to this day, vacationers report finding fragments of wicker basket and chocolate egg in the sand, not to mention clumps of old fur), but eggs for consumption? Really, who in their right mind could put something in their mouth that came out of the rectum of a chicken? I remain hopeful that those genetic geniuses who duplicate sheep and make mice with giant ears on their backs will soon devise a hen that has a little hatch in its side that will dispense eggs in the manner of a vending machine, possibly in the shape of cubes to more easily be stacked and handled. I think the chickens will thank us, too: it can be little fun pushing out something the equivalent to a breadbin in size, from one’s bottom. What’s that, Kitchener? Ladies and childbirth? Really, you go too far: that is surely one of nature’s greatest pleasures, I am sure of it.

Activity Of The Week
S
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Easter and Passover in Cape May
PRING is the adolescence of the year, the time when we chafe against restrictions and routines. Break out of your winter rut, and take a spring break in Cape May. Cape May’s hotels are ready to entertain you. Congress Hall offers things like scavenger hunts and pajama parties and, on April 10, a Pirates and Princesses luncheon. The Inn of Cape May opens for the season with room specials and an Easter Brunch, and the Grand Hotel offers an Easter Sunday breakfast buffet with Peter Cottontail. Even if you are in Cape May for a traditional celebration, like Easter or Passover, you can add your own touch. A Passover seder, for example, is a pretty regimented celebration, coming, as it does, with its own script, but some celebrants add original touches. My friend references Harry Potter and Hogwarts in her Passover preparation — days before, children are divided into teams (houses) and awarded points by adults (faculty) for helping. Five points for teaching little ones a traditional song, ten points for listening patiently to grandpa’s oft-told tales, 15 points
for vacuuming the bread crumbs out of the couch. Awards are presented after the first seder, and it ends up being a delightful way to unite far-flung cousins and encourage good behavior. After the holiday, you can start planning next year’s meal at the Cape May County Library. Chef Mark Kalla will present “Cape Cuisine: Exploring the Pesach Meal” at
1pm. on April 21. The program is free, but registration is required — call 609-463-6350 for more information. Easter celebrants can add personal touches to traditional activities — every tradition was once new. They’ve been rolling eggs on the White House lawn since 1878, but that tradition only got started after egg rolling at the Capitol was banned because it destroyed the lawn. Save your lawn and take the kids for an egg roll on the beach after Saturday’s Easter Egg Hunt, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club, at Cape May Elementary School at 10am. Or, update your Easter Bonnet — glue some Peeps to a baseball cap, decorate a headband with flowers or channel your inner princess with a chic fascinator. Show off your creation at the Easter Fashion Stroll, Washington Street Mall at 1pm on Easter Sunday. Registration begins at noon. The Easter bunny will make an appearance, but if he’s not enough, stop by Bay Springs Alpaca Farm to see Easter alpacas, or head to the zoo to see the Easter-egg-colored flamingos.Make your own spring break traditions in Cape May. Next week: A Spirited Weekend

I worked here 13 years ago for a while, then moved to North Jersey. I’ve been back here for two years. Best thing about the job? I usually work in the curtains section, and it’s fun creating new looks with the customers. What’s your OTHER dream job? I think it would be working with animals. I have three dogs and four cats — they’re my furry babies. What do you recommend here? I always just ask the customer to tell me what they’re visualizing, then I help them make it happen. Favorite thing about Cape May? It just feels like home to me. After living away for a while, then coming back, I just felt like I was home. CORY Damiana, the son of Bill and Kelly of Cape May, is a standout wrestler at LCMR. This year as a sophomore, Damiana won the district tournament, placed second in the regional tournament, and made it to the state playoffs. Damiana comes from a family of athletes. His brother, Bill, was a successful wrestler and football player at LCMR who holds many records of his own. “I have big shoes to fill, but it gives me more motivation to do better,” said Damiana. Damiana started wrestling when he was four years old, and has enjoyed the sport since he first set foot on the mat. He wrestles three to four days a week during the off season with his brother and coaches to stay in shape and on top of his game. So far, Damiana has 52 wins in his career, and he also stars on LCMR’s football team. Damiana is a dedicated student athlete who maintains his grades in college-bound and honors level classes. His dream colleges include Lehigh and Penn State for wrestling, and Georgia Tech and Georgia if he decides to pursue football at the college level. Damiana is an all-star athlete and is sure to succeed in whatever sport he chooses BY ALICE BUR/ PHOTOGRAPH BY JASON HOBAN

BERNIE is a black and tan two-yearold shepherd mix. This beautiful and sweet boy is a bit nervous, but knows basic commands and is quite submissive so with a patient person he will be eager to learn more. He is very energetic and will require consistent exercise to keep him happy. Bernie’s a rare guy because he can go to a home with dogs and/or cats and older children. Bernie’s adoption fee is $95.

AUTUMN is a 12-year-old blonde, purebred cocker spaniel who came to the shelter with her sister Lady Bug (next panel). The previous owner could not afford to take care of these two ladies. Autumn has allergies, including grass, so care must be taken to keep her away from it, and she’s prone to ear infections so does not like her ears touched. She is calm and gentle, loves walks and is very receptive to commands.

LADY BUG is an 11-year-old purebred cocker spaniel who is very attached to her sister, Autumn. Like most cocker spaniels, Lady Bug is prone to ear infections, and she and her sister are considered highmaintenance due to their allergies and need for grooming. Both dogs are well-mannered, good-natured and lovable, and a quiet home would be most beneficial to these sweet gals. The adoption fee is $8. Awww.

T WAS after a performance of the critically-acclaimed Red last season that a subscriber approached Cape May Stage Artistic Director Roy Steinberg and said, “I did not know this play, and I might have missed it had I not subscribed. It is the best production I have ever seen. I bought the subscription for the shows that I knew, but the productions that I did not know are the jewels.” Subscribing to Cape May Stage is important for the patron, for the theatre, and for the community. When you purchase a subscription, it gives you that added nudge to get out of the house and see something surprising and exciting. Cape May Stage needs our subscribers to help support the production values its audiences have come to expect - the great sets and lights, and the actors they have seen on Broadway or on film and television. And subscriptions help the town by insuring that visitors will have another reason to come to Cape May. The beach is lovely, after all, but sometimes people want a little more. A realtor we know in another town says that he sells properties there because it is close enough for people to come see the productions and Broadway performers at Cape May Stage. This season, there is an added reason to buy Cape May Stage packages like the Broadway Series, where you get a free $50 performance. That’s right, you can buy five tickets for performances by stars like Anthony Rapp, Faith Prince, Christine Ebersole, Lee Roy Reams, Andrea Marcovicci, Jill Eikenberry and Michael Tucker, and you

Bird Droppings
I
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
T HAPPENED again. I got to meet two brand new birders. Nice folks (as bird watchers tend to be). Intelligent, personable, curious, and beset with a small degree of apprehension. They’d never been on an official bird walk before. In fact, they admitted they’d just started looking at birds in their back yard. Their unease was easily assuaged. Shared interest, not experience, is the coin of tribute in birding. Experience? Skill? They’re qualities you gain over time. In fact, they started gaining experience right there in the South Cape May Meadow’s parking lot. By time the walk officially started, they were already veteran birders. Right there in the parking lot, there were migrating groups of egrets f lying over, tree swallows f lying cookie-cutter patterns in the sky, fish crows perched on wires, a brown thrasher keyed up on a bush, singing his heart out. Carolina wrens were singing — mockingbirds and house finch, too. That’s one thing about Cape May. You can always count on birds
to be around. The key to birding is locating them. That’s where the experience of those who lead walks pays off. All the people attending need to do is enjoy the birds. A word on that. Sure enough, my new birding friends were a bit under-equipped. They had a pair of binoculars, one of those teenie-weenie little things with the amber coated lenses that are impossible to hold
steady and turn the whole world a ghastly green. With as much diplomacy as the situation called for, we invited them to leave their “travel” binoculars in the car and borrow a couple of grown-up instruments. One of them was merely an excellent birding binocular, the other an exceptional one, the kind that instills binocular envy even among top birders. I think the observation of the gentleman summed it up perfectly. “WOW,” he said. Precisely. If you’re going to look at birds, you might as well get the most out of the look. There is another reason why having the right binocular makes a great deal of difference. This has to do with field guides. No. Not the people leading the walk. We’re talking about books that depict and describe birds. Match the picture to the bird. Read the text to see whether it conforms to what you are seeing. Look at the map to make sure you and the bird are in the right place and right

Bird Droppings ? From Page 81 time. Bingo. You pin the name to the bird. The problem is that, just like binoculars, not all field guides are created equal. Some are abridged, crippled by the absence of many common species. Some are overly complicated and, commonly, some field guides in the hands of new birders are just plain old, dated, primitive. The people who are writing field guides, like David Sibley, whose Sibley Guide to Birds was created in Cape May Point, use superlative optics. David depicted what he saw in the field and with great optics you see more, and more detail, than with less expensive instruments. Even more than experienced birders, beginning birders need good optics to see field marks, those trademarks of nature that distinguish one bird from the next, and to help them get on birds quickly. Anybody can make a sharp binocular. What distinguishes a birding binocular from an ordinary one are things that make a glass quick, forgiving, user-friendly. You can’t identify what you can’t find. Quality instruments not only allow you to see birds well, they help you find them. Two hours later, back in the parking lot,
The right binoculaurs make all the difference — find your perfect pair at CMBO with more than 60 species of birds under their belts, my two new birders surrendered their loaner binoculars. Can you guess what their next stop was? If you said the CMBO store, then you understand the importance of quality optics, too. If you’re want to expand your bird watching from your backyard, or your birding capabilities with a better pair of optics, Cape May Bird Observatory is THE place for all your nature needs. Pick up a free birding map, checklist and schedule of daily walks, and talk to our
staff about optics, field guides, or anything else you might need - or don’t know you need yet! CMBO is located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point, 609-884-2736, and is open DAILY from 9:30am to 4:30pm. Our staff are always available to help with questions. While you’re there, scan the bookshelves for bargains in the used and vintage books section, look at the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise, including a terrific lithograph done just for the CMBO. Check the sighting sheets to find what’s being seen in the field, and check the wide selection of scopes and binoculars. Sit outside on garden benches and enjoy the birds at the feeders and the Lake Lily view. You can also visit us online www.BirdCapeMay.org – where birding Cape May is only a click away! Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for the New York Times.

The Dating Column
I
Stella Dixon’s take on romance on Old Cape Island
T HAS been a disappointing week. To start, legendary Exit Zero photographer Maciek Nabrdalik, who’s visiting from Poland, told me that my Polish last name means “100 potatoes.” I’d always pictured something just a bit more... I dunno... sexy? Secondly, I just outed myself. No, Stella Dixon is not my real name. But that doesn’t matter. You can call me spud, apparently. Thirdly, I spent a chunk of my weekend remembering a guy I don’t enjoy remembering. A guy named Todd. On Saturday, we happened to be at the same bar. He spent the night smooching with the girl he dropped me for several years ago. I spent the night hovering around the best-looking guy in the place, hoping I might appear coupled up and, therefore, less pathetically alone (my apologies to this gentleman). Todd and I had been friends since we were kids until, one day, it turned into more. On one of those great, late summer nights, we pulled Todd’s truck up to the beach, ate some peanuts on the hood, and picked out every constellation we knew, before making
up some of our own. Then he reached over and kissed me. A good kiss. A long kiss. The kind of kiss that had been in the works for some time. In the months to follow, there was more kissing. More peanuts. More constellations. And more kissing. Did I mention that part? But it was not meant to be. My good friend Todd woke up one morning and realized he’d rather pick out constellations with someone else. He didn’t tell me this was the
case; he simply disappeared, leaving me to wonder what I’d done wrong. It’s hard not to feel like a disappointment when you get dropped like a hot potato (or 100 hot potatoes). It’s hard not to feel as though you’ve screwed up. Like you’re inadequate. Like — compared to that girl who’s got her tongue in your ex’s mouth across the Brown Room bar — you’re just a big dud (or spud, as the case may be). Eventually, you start worrying about being a disappointment even before you get dumped. You become unsure of your every move, everything you say, because you’re so busy waiting for the object of your affection to wake up and realize you aren’t quite what he’d been hoping for — something just a bit more... I dunno... sexy? And, because some prophecies are self-fulfilling, that’s exactly what happens. Times like these, it’s important to remember that — kind of like a potato — you may not be the most exciting or exotic, but dammit, you’ve got a lot to offer. And perhaps the disappointment isn’t you, but that person who was never able to realize it.
