A Few Words About George
Reader Frank Scott sent us this poem on the death of George Mesterhazy, a Cape May legend On Hearing the News The night I heard the news, I dreamt in a minor key. On the final melancholy chord in my head — I awaited the barely perceptible shift of one of his fingers that would introduce the sound of hope — But that wasn’t to be. I know that it will come, for such a person was he. But for now I just listen, mourn, and reminisce — Hearing emotions, picturing hands — as all the emptiness lingers — knowing together that we will cope — awaiting that change of key. Talk Of The Town
Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
Goodbye, George THERE was only one thing missing from the rousing, goosebump-and-tears-inducing performance by 11 talented musicians at the Performing Arts Center at Middle Township High School on Sunday... and that was the man they were honoring. As this All-Star collection of musicians performed “When the Saints Go Marching In”, the smiling image of George Mesterhazy overlooked them, in a framed photograph placed on an easel, above a beautiful bouquet of flowers. It was a remarkable tribute to a remarkable man — George died in his sleep at the Merion Inn in Cape May last Thursday, four days after his 59th birthday. It was at the Merion where George, a virtuoso pianist, was most often heard in Cape May. The beloved institution was also his home, one he shared with his partner, Vicky Watson, the Merion owner. But George traveled the world making music. Over the course of his 30-year career, he delighted audiences at Carnegie Hall and accompanied the likes of Paula West and Shirley Horn. For his work on the latter’s album, he was nominated for a Grammy. Friends Ed Drozda, JM Kearns, Roy Baker, Terry Dougherty, Parker Smith, Debra Donahue, Rose Kelly, Dottie Knapp, and Andy Vernon feel privileged to have heard him play. Parker Smith: He could play Beethoven or whatever complicated piece… and at the same time, he could have his laptop open and be watching a sitcom. That’s how good he was. JM Kearns: When he played, George had that pure impish look on his face, inciting you, daring you, poking you, amazing you with his riffs, and you would feel free, like an
old song was full of possibilities you’d never glimpsed before. Roy Baker: You never knew what he was going to show up with — keyboard, mellodia, recorder. One night, he walked in with an iPad. He was a virtuoso even on an iPad! Terry Dougherty: The last two Septembers, I did a gig for the Art League at the gazebo in Rotary Park with Herb Moore and George, who played an iPad. People were fascinated with the amazing musician making amazing music with this piece of technology, but that’s the thing — George was music. Music poured from him wherever and whatever he was doing. Parker Smith: You never saw George in a bad mood. He was all cheer and full of life, and that’s the way he played piano. Debra Donahue: He’s like the godfather of music in Cape May, like the bard of Decatur. Rose Kelly: For the price of a couple of drinks, you’d be listening to music where, anywhere else, you’d be paying $100 for a seat. Dottie Knapp: Now is a great time to be in Heaven. The music must be fabulous. Despite his accomplishments, George remained humble. Ed Drozda: George was no stranger to the big world, but he was such a down-home person, which made him all the more loveable. He was a world-famous artist — people have reached out from Italy, Switzerland, and Africa to express their grief. But you wouldn’t know it. George was your bud. Parker Smith: He would take his tips to pay other musicians to join him. His own hard-earned money. Who would do that? For no other reason than he wanted to fill
the room with music. Andy Vernon: He played in London, San Franciso, New York… in real jazz rooms. He was a thoroughbred jazz player, yet he’d come to the Pilot House and just love being with us schlubs. Debra Donahue: In 2005, Vicky Watson, Barry Tischler and Glenn McBrearty started this hootenanny group. We would get together every week and play music we wanted to play, anything you could do harmony with, for no one’s consumption but our own. Sometimes, George would sit in. Here was this world-class musician, so generous, playing along with us. He would glow. He would enjoy whatever we were doing. And we were honored to have him there, but honestly… I think he had more fun that we did. Roy Baker: Some people play music for the fame or for the money. George played for the sheer love of music. He was the kind of guy you’d expect to be in a mansion someplace, having nothing to do with the rest of the world, but that wasn’t him. And he was a man who, if he had the biggest ego in the world, no one could have blamed him. Even more than his musical ability, George will be remembered most for his ability to make those around him — including friends like Darla Logue, Shelly Van Dyke, Dennis Zaitsev, Jane ValdesDapena, Shirley Stiles, Charlie Logeman and fellow musicians Mike Murphy, Barry Tischler, and Bernadette Matthews — feel special. Andy Vernon: In your musical life, there are people you connect with and, no matter how much time passes, you’re right in sync. George was like that for me. If we spent a total of 10 hours together off the stage, I’d

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 be surprised, but he made me feel special. Then today, I had this realization. That wonderful son-of-a-bitch had that relationship with everyone. I wasn’t special; it wasn’t me. It was George. He touched everyone that deeply. Darla Logue: I met George in the summer of 1999, while spending my first summer in Cape May. I wandered into the Merion Inn one night. I was about to leave when a man started to play an old upright piano. I loved it. That weekend, I brought my husband, Jim. He looked at me and said, “Darla, this is jazz; it is what I’ve been wanting you to listen to for years.” In future years, Jim went to the Merion nightly; he couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket but he loved jazz. He would talk to George about all sorts of musicians and things I’d never heard of, but
this was okay, because the two of them were having such a good time. The next-to-last day of his life, Jim spent a wonderful evening at the Merion. George greeted him like the old friend he had become, telling him this was his night; he would play whatever Jim wanted. He gave a wonderful concert, making Jim’s last day on earth memorable and bearable. If there is an afterlife, I imagine Jim sitting just inside those pearly gates, impatiently tapping his toe. As George enters, Jim says, “What took you so long? The music scene here really needs you.” Shelly Van Dyke: The first time I met George, in the summer of 2002, we sat in the center of the Merion Inn dining room. Everyone had gone home, everything was locked up, and we were the only two left. We sat at a table until the wee hours of the morning, discussing our dreams and sharing our thoughts. He made everyone feel like a best friend.
Dottie Knapp: One night, George asked my husband Mal and I what our song was. Unfortunately, our song wasn’t one out of the Great American Song Book; it was Rachmaninoff ’s Piano Concerto Number Two. Don’t you know that George performed it for us as though he were at Carnegie Hall? All three movements. Okay, so maybe there was a bit of jazz thrown in, but we were blown away. George made moments like this all the time for people, reminding us why we love Cape May. Parker Smith: My wife and I met 25 ago performing in A Chorus Line in Atlantic City. George knew that, and every time we’d go to the Merion Inn, he’d break into “One Singular Sensation.” He knew how special that song was to us, so it was special to him. Barry Tischler: George played at the Algonquin Hotel in New York, and we went to hear him. That’s the big time, but he treated us like gold, even there. That’s how he treated everyone. Jane Valdes-Dapena: George knew my mother. Before she died in 2008, my father was concerned whether she would act appropriately at the Merion Inn because she was in the late stages of Alzheimer’s. But George would try to reassure him. He would tell him it was fine, that he wanted us there regardless. He was more than a musical genius; he had a sense of compassion. Shirley Stiles: “You Made Me Love You” is my favorite song, and George played it for me all the time, simply because he knew how much I loved it. He’d want me to sing with him. Mike Murphy: I consider myself an amateur musician. When George would show up at the Pilot House for open mic nights, it was like, “Oh my God, George.” But then, he would ask to play a few songs with me. How special that would make me feel. Rose Kelly: Here we’d be, beating on our guitars or this or that, but George would make us feel as though what we were doing was so important. He’d ask to play a song with someone, and it would make that person feel like a million bucks. Bernadette Matthews: I had just moved to Cape May from Pennsylvania, dismantling my whole life for what I thought was a career here, but I was let go. I didn’t even know George at the time, but he walked up to me and asked how I was doing. He told me that life would go on, that I was a great person and a great professional, and he continued to encourage me from that night on. He had a gift for making people feel their best. Dennis Zaitsev: When George found out

Page 16 Talk Of The Town ? From Page 14 I was Russian, he wanted to make me feel like I was home. He would play a Latvian song for me when I’d get to the Merion Inn to welcome me and make me feel comfortable, without even saying a word. I felt connected because of George. Charles Logeman: In 2001, the Somers Point Jazz Society put together a benefit for the folks who were injured in the World Trace Center attack. Not only did George play for the hour we asked him to play, he stayed and did an entire second show, out of the goodness of his heart. He loved people. He would walk into a room and hug 20, 30 different people. It was his way of showing the love. But George wasn’t merely a kind man; he was a very funny guy who loved to have a good time, according to Phil Pizzi. Phil Pizzi: George used to joke that he liked the idea of his music being foreplay for couples, that he hoped it got them in the mood. Some of the hilarious things that came out of his mouth… I can’t repeat them here. JM Kearns: George was inspiring and
Thursday, April 19, 2012 fearless, and just a smart cat, but most of all, he WAS the party. Jane Valdes-Dapena: Someone who spoke at George’s service said it well: “George may not have been a saint, but we can be sure the saints are hanging with him now.” Ed Drozda: He was an absolute hoot as a friend. He was silly and crazy and so much fun to be with. Behind where he sat at the Merion Inn there was a window. I’d reach through it and ruffle his hair, and he’d announce me as his “brother from another mother.” Debra Donahue: George was always ready for a laugh and irreverent conversation. Oh my God, he lived in color. I’ll never forget when George and Vicky came to visit me and Michael in Nashville when we lived there. They came with a case of wine, I made a big Indian feast, and we spent the next three days plowing through the wine and eating. He loved to have fun, and he contributed so much to the tapestry that is Cape May. Rose Kelly: He was naughty, mischievous. You knew when he got that look on his face and that little smirk of his, that there was something going on in his brain… either a musical masterpiece, or
something just a little bit naughty. Roy Baker: Did George have other hobbies? You mean besides making people laugh? What a lovable, semi-nutcase he was. He had a way of saying things spontaneously and out of left field that would have you on the floor laughing. He had that presence. Bernadette Matthews: George was a jester. Last week, I went to the Sandi Pointe restaurant [in Somers Point]. I heard this piano and I thought, that’s George. I went inside and George announced, “Hey, there’s my homegirl, Bernadette.” Then he smelled me — smelled me — how silly. He said, “What’s that scent you’re wearing? I’m going to figure it out, you know. I have a talent for that kind of thing.” He was just silly and fun and always, always loving people. Jane Valdes-Dapena: Two years ago, my father turned 85, and George played the most rousing version of “Happy Birthday.” It had a conclusion that went on for five minutes, with embellishment after embellishment and in every musical style. By the end, the whole place was cheering and clapping. George got up, looked right at my father and said, “Too much?”

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 16 Dennis Zaitsev: People will remember George as a very funny person. He loved to joke. He would get my goat by telling me that if he were a little bit younger, he would date my sister. He just loved to have fun. But more than having a good time, or even playing music, George loved his family — his beautiful partner Vicky Watson — who owns the Merion Inn — and their animals. As a way to honor George, Vicky and friends would like you to consider making a donation to Animal Outreach of Cape May, which is raising funds for a new shelter. Visit www.aocmc.org. Ed Drozda: Vicky’s a beautiful woman, and George adored her. And their animals. They had two little puppies and several cats who all survived the Merion Inn fire a year ago. They could often be found walking around town with the dogs, even though you could tell George probably had about three hours of sleep the night before — he was a late-night guy — but he loved them so much. For such a passionate person, he was a quiet, gentle man who loved his animals. Bernadette Matthews: George was extrememly devoted to Vicky, and to his
animals. He used to say, “If you don’t like animals… just defriend me.” Debbie Drozda: George and Vicky were so well-suited, because they were so opposite. He was the showman, she was the stable force. And they loved their animals. George used to talk about them like a beaming father. Rose Kelly: George was a ladies man on the outside — I don’t think he could help but kiss you if you walked by — but it was all show. He had a very special lady to whom he was just so devoted. George was equally devoted to his students, according to former colleague Sharla Feldscher. He worked as an adjunct professor at Rowan University, where he helped many students discover their own passion for music. The George Mesterhazy Foundation will continue fostering music education, performance, and preservation. If you’d like to contribute, email merioninn@aol. com with CM Foundation in the subject line. Sharla Feldscher: George took [child prodigy] Rocco Fiorentino under his wings as a protégé. Even at the age of 12, Rocco knew George was a gift, and he loved his special jazz piano lessons with him. I’ll always be thankful to George for giving so much time to Rocco and for joining us on the
Today Show as Rocco’s accompanist. Debbie Drozda: I spoke with George after one of his shows during the jazz festival quite a few years back. I remember how passionate he was speaking about the students he mentored. JM Kearns: George was always so excited about other people’s talent, no matter what musical level they were at. He was a one-man, devilish conspiracy to make other people better. Roy Baker: It was a joy to see George encourage other musicians, especially the young kids who would come to open mic night. Here’s a guy who’s toured the world and played with the finest musicians, and he gravitated toward those who were learning. Bernadette Matthews: George had just promised to give me piano lessons. He said, “It won’t take long for you to pick it up, because you’re prettier than I am.” As the Cape May community mourns the loss of a local legend, a man who single-handedly made Cape May a better place, we take comfort in the lessons we’ve learned from George — about quiet passion and the power of a kind word — and in the music we were lucky enough to hear. Ed Drozda: I imagine George would be pretty upset if the music stopped now.

A Moment In History
A
Historical Editor Ben Miller talks about Convention Hall
S YOU can see in this July 1917 article from the Philadelphia Inquirer, before it was known as Convention Hall, the complex across from the former site of the Stockton Hotel was known as City Pier or Municipal Pier. The Convention Hall name was given to the building a year later. What’s particularly interesting about this article is that it speaks of the “passing of the famous Stockton Hotel and Congress Hall...” At the time the article was written, Congress Hall was boarded up and its future was uncertain. It had been closed in 1910 and seven years later, with no maintenance, it was in bad shape. Many thought it would be lost, until Annie Knight began a massive renovation in 1920. Another interesting aspect of this article is the “swimming tanks,” though it did not elaborate and there was no subsequent article the following week. The only other mention I found of “swimming tanks” was an article about the Corinthian Yacht Club, who also owned them and allowed Navy Reserve sailors to use them for recreation.

The Movie Column
Y
By Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival
EMEN is another world away. The region, which is southwest on the Arabian Peninsula, is characterized by desert lands and a scarcity of water. Salmon Fishing in the Yemen is a story of a British fisheries expert (played by Ewan McGregor) who is asked to introduce the sport of f ly-fishing to the region, which is as unlikely to happen as many of the plot turns in this film. Emily Blunt, who seems to be in a lot of films lately, plays a consultant for a prominent sheikh from Yemen, played by Amr Waked. She asks McGregor to consider a partnership whereby the sport of f ly-fishing can be introduced to the country. At first, the McGregor character barely responds to the inane request and is content to let it die in his email inbox. When fighting between the British and Saudis erupts elsewhere, an overzealous press secretary wants to use the possibility of a collaboration to demonstrate good will between the countries. What develops is a multi-million
Monsieur Lazhar, starring Sophie Nélisse, is the anti-Hunger Games, according to Tom Sims dollar project whereby the dream of f lyfishing is set to become reality in the arid land, and a possible romance between McGregor and Blunt, which also swims against the current of common sense and believability. My hat is off to the actors for trying to pull together this concept, and

they fail not because of their abilities but because of story that just doesn’t (yes, he’s going to say it) hold water. Ouch. The film is largely forgettable. Although the two main actors create a rapport and the characters are well developed, the story in which they’re operating is much less so. The performance by Waked is also notable, but all the other characters are more annoying than not with performances that can’t change that. This is a film that you want to be good, with at least a fresh concept, but alas cannot get hook you. Yeah, I’ll stop that now. What a tremendous loss we suffered this past week. George Mesterhazy was a gentle soul, gifted musician, and all around wonderful human being. There are many pictures of George, but he’s in a few videos as well. Visit www.youtube. com/capemayfilm and search “Seize the Wedding Day” (where George appears at marker 1:54) and very brief ly in a short spot when you search the channel for “Reality Stops Here.” We will miss you, George, and I will miss you.

What’s Your Story?
Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here? Who are you? My name is Michael Curto and this is Nicole Harmuth. Where are you from? Jersey City. This is our first vacation together. And what were you doing when we interrupted you? Celebrating our engagement at The Brown Room bar. It just happened. So how did you pop the question? After dinner, we were going to take a walk on the beach, but it was freezing, so I ended up asking on the veranda just outside. Were you surprised, Nicole? Oh, yes. Do you guys have a song, Nicole? I know what it is... do you, Michael? Well, do you, Micahel? Uhhh... Let’s change the subject! How long have you been together? Eight years, since high school. What’s the secret to lasting love? We’re going to find out. Interview by Diane Stopyra PHOTOGRAPH BY MACIEK NABRDALIK

Open House
Exit Zero tours a local home for sale. This week... 11 Beach Avenue, Unit 103 WHERE IS IT? How does directly across the street from the ocean work for you? Good? Then this property at 11 Beach Drive will suit you right down to the ground. WHAT IS IT? Unit 103 a first-f loor, totally updated property in the Sandpiper Beach Club, a full-service condominium community. WHO HAS THE LISTING? Heijung Park-Colameco, a broker-associate with Jersey Cape Realty, has this listing. Heijung is a West Cape May resident who has been a Realtor since 2005, and she prides herself on offering ethical, comprehensive and personalized service to her clients. HOW MANY ROOMS? This sunny condo has two bedrooms, two baths, and a spacious open f loor plan for the kitchen/ dining/living area. There is also a large private deck, complete with rockers, for that outdoor room every proper shore home should have. WHAT’S THE VIBE? The vibe here is carefree, turn-key luxury. Beautifully furnished (including down comforters with
Italian cotton duvet covers) and tastefully appointed, all you need to do is unpack your suitcase and you’re home. AMENITIES? Besides the location, huh? There’s an onsite health club, pool, beach service in-season, granite countertops, generously-sized rooms, and all your appliances, including washer and dryer. There are two f lat-screen TVs, one with a DVD player. Walk to restaurants, shops, and galleries, or zip across the street to the beach. Feeling lazy? Simply slip out your front door to the pool. Speaking of leisurely

living, easily one of our favorite benefits of condo living here is the daily maid service, like you’d find in a fine hotel. INSIDER TIP: If you’re considering an investment property, you should definitely be considering this one. The Sandpiper management office will handle all of the rentals of the unit for you. Simply let them know which weeks you’d like to block off for your own use, and they will handle all those pesky details of renting out your property. RANDOM FACT: At 1,066 square feet, this is the third most spacious unit in the Sandpiper community. Sometimes the word condo can equal cramped, but that is not the case in this bright, breezy property. PRICE: $699,000 — a bargain for this kind of luxury beachfront living. Reserve a couple of weeks for yourself, and then rent it out for the rest of the season to help with the mortgage payments. CONTACT INFO: Call Heijung at the office, 609-884-5800, on her cell at 609602-8641, or email her at Heijung@jerseycaperealty.com.

EACH week, Exit Zero will be ambushing unsuspecting and deserving citizens with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from a local florist. All you have to do is answer a question or two by our roving photographer, Gabi Urda. This week’s lucky recipient is Andra Istodor, who was ambushed at Washington Commons. Where are you from? I live here in Cape May. Occupation: I’m a waitress-in-training at The Ebbitt Room. What were you doing when we interrupted? I’m on my way to Tommy’s Folly for a chocolate chip cookie — it’s my favorite treat for myself. When is the last time you got some flowers? I haven’t gotten flowers since December, and that was for my birthday. PHOTO BY GABI URDA... FLOWERS BY CAPE WINDS

The Answer Lady
T
Wise answers to perplexing questions
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady My sister has asked me to be in her wedding, and I hate to tell her no, but I don’t want to. It’s not that I have anything against her marriage, it’s just that I hate getting my picture taken, and at weddings, well, that’s all they do. My husband says I’m beautiful and that I’m being ridiculous. Am I? – No Photos, Please Dear Best Actually, that’s not “all they do” at weddings. While the Answer Lady can understand your feelings (she has not been happy with a photo taken of her since approximately 1987), and at the risk of making a bad pun, she suggests that you are ‘missing the big picture.’ The Answer Lady does not feel that you are being ‘ridiculous,’ but perhaps a tad ‘narcissistic.’ As the sudden death of local legend George Mesterhazy last week
illustrated all too well, life is short and twists of fate are unexpected. How wonderful it is that there are so many photos of George, so that his family and friend can remember him through those, as well as through his music. Put on your atrocious, unflattering bridesmaid’s dress, and participate joyfully in your sister’s wedding because you love her and this is a happy occasion. How you look in the photos is completely immaterial. (But if your husband says you’re beautiful, that’s good enough for the Answer Lady. )
Dear Answer Lady My mom is great, but she is a TOTAL pain to buy gifts for. Mother’s Day is weeks away and I’m already in a panic about what to get her. She always says not to get her anything, that she doesn’t need anything, and then she returns or exchanges whatever I do buy. Help! – Daunted Daughter Dear Daunted Some people have a talent for gift-giving; others, for being gracious recipients. (The Answer Lady falls into the latter category, by the way, and her birthday is June 16. FYI.) You and your mother seem to be locked in this battle, so why not change your strategy? Take her out to dinner and a movie. Perhaps a play — either Cape May Stage or East Lynne, or kill two birds with one stone and take her to Elaine’s Dinner Theater. Maybe bird-watching or a day at the beach is more her speed — whatever you think she might enjoy. A gift does not always need to be tangible, but if you’d rather hand her something, present her with a nicely framed photograph of the two of you — the Answer Lady cannot imagine that she’d hand it back to you.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
FIND baseball a tame affair these days. Mind you, I find most things tame these days, having done/seen/ experienced/tasted/hunted everything on Earth worth mentioning (with the exception of Tweeting: I refuse to use something that allows the commoner to think that what they have to say is worth saying to more than one person). And of all of the things emasculated by time and regulations, baseball is worst. When we first devised the game, me and Hemingway, whilst fighting Franco’s fascists in Spain, we used a makeshift couple of bats to hit grenades deep into enemy territory (the record was 300 yards, give or take ten feet, as the crater was too deep and too full of little bits of fascist to be worth searching in detail for the impact point). And there was none of this three-strikes nonsense when the enemy threw grenades at you: one miss was generally enough to end the batter’s turn, not to say life. But how the sport took off once word spread: troops from both sides would gather to watch the batters and pitchers
slug it out, and the excitement was not limited to the field, where players around the periphery would try to catch the grenade and lob it right at opposing players before it exploded. No, a good batter would send the explosive right into the heart of the opposing team’s supporters. Why, the atmosphere was electric, with never a dull moment. At the end of the game, (surviving) supporters and players would file out, covered in mud, blood, fragments of hotdog and little pieces of failed batsmen/fielders.

After the war, we did try to bring the sport home, and had a memorable match against Wildwood, where a crowd of some 20,000 gathered in front of Congress Hall. How they cheered, how they chattered, how they screamed the first time a grenade sailed into the bleachers and took out Wildwood’s family-and-friends-of-theteam section. Of course, the game did not last for long, due to the damage and attrition of players and spectators, plus a home run that my old pal Henry Ford hit landed at the base of The Sphinx, which was on loan from Egypt, and took the nose right off. As we picked our way home, through craters, discussing the match over the sound of ambulances and screaming, we reluctantly agreed with the chief of police that perhaps the sport needed to be calmed down just a bit, except when we played Wildwood again, obviously. Tragically, the calming-down led to the dreadful game we see now, where catching the ball is not even particularly life-threatening, unless one is foolishly near the edge of a drop at the time. America, I weep.

Activity Of The Week
A
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Celebrate Earth Day.
S YOU enjoy the shore’s natural beauty this weekend, spend some time marking Earth Day in Cape May. America first observed Earth Day on April 22, 1970, as a grassroots movement to increase environmental awareness. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin conceived of it after two major ecological events in 1969 — a Santa Barbara oil spill — and the Cuyahoga River becoming so polluted, it burned. An estimated 20 million people responded in their communities and, in the 42 years since, the movement has spread all over the world. Victorians had their version of an environmental movement over 100 years before. In 1858, Londoners faced the “Great Stink,” as high spring temperatures and lingering drought combined to exacerbate the odors emanating from the Thames. New indoor plumbing pipes brought untreated sewage from nearly three million Londoners into the tidal river, joining the waste of slaughterhouses, tanneries, and other businesses. The Thames did not carry the waste out to sea as engineers had hoped, and it accumulated on
the mudflats. The stench became unbearable, calling attention to pollution in the Thames, the source of the city’s drinking water. Over the course of 50 years, the river went from “clear stream to foul sewer,” according to a 1958 editorial in the Illustrated London Times. For decades, Londoners calling for intervention had been thwarted by corruption and
bureaucracy, but after one stinky summer, Parliament was motivated to act. Modern environmentalists can mark Earth Day in Cape May in a number of ways. At the Cape May County Park and Zoo, “Set the Scene... Go Green,” on Saturday, April 21, with a fun run and 5k, an environmental magic show and Earth Day fair featuring live music and an interactive drum circle. The Nature Center of Cape May will host an Earth Day and Marine Debris cleanup on Saturday, April 21 from 9am-noon at 1600 Delaware Avenue. Help to clean the beach and spruce up the gardens while learning about wildlife. Bring your own tools, and call ahead if you have a large group. The cleanup is free, and refreshments are provided. Or, spend the day learning about the creatures who demonstrate why the earth is worth saving. A lecture on “Milkweed for Monarchs” is scheduled from 10:30-noon, or catch “Hummingbirds 101” from 1-3pm. Call 609-898-8848 for more information. Finish the day by toasting Mother Earth with some local wine or beer. Next week: Spring Festival

PETE Owens, a friendly resident of North Cape May, was selected to participate in the Atlantic Cape Regional Honors Band that was formed this year for his tremendous saxophone playing ability. The only child of Geraldine Kutas and Pierre Owens, Pete has been playing saxophone since he was in fifth grade. Not only is this extraordinary Lower Cape May Regional junior a member of the band, but he is also a participant in a variety of school clubs, all while also being an AP/honors student. Owens is a very motivated, hardworking individual, and those who know him would describe him as a complete gentleman. This is probably why he was chosen to be President of the French National Honor Society, one of the many clubs that Owens is a part of at LCMR. Owens is also an enthusiastic student who strives to do his very best at everything he attempts. He says that he is hard on himself in school because he “aspires to do better.” All of this hard work and devotion will surely pay off when he graduates from LCMR. Owens plans to continue his hard work and selfmotivation in college, where he plans to study to be a neuroscientist or an orthopedic surgeon. BY CHEYENNE MCKINNEY/ PHOTOGRAPH BY JASON HOBAN

Radar is very social, loves being pet, going for walks and playing with balls, though he isn’t much for sharing them. BOWSER is patiently waiting for a forever home. He’s very calm, quiet and quite sweet, but he gets anxious. He’ll need TLC and time to adjust to a new home, but can be a good boy! The adoption fee is $95.

LOUISE is a young playful girl who is sweet and seems very trainable. Right now she is a tad unruly, but with consistent direction she’ll be fine. She came in as a stray, and she likes other dogs but would not do well with cats. Until she calms down or receives some training, she’d require extra supervision with small children, not because she’s aggressive, but because she doesn’t realize her own strength. Bird Droppings
B
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
y the time you read this column, it will already be history. The subject, I mean. Willets. You see, as I write this, I am waiting for Eastern Willets to arrive. Willets are a shorebird. They are common breeders in coastal marshes. They arrive mid-April. Stick around for a couple, three months. Split. By the time July 4th rolls around, most of the Willets have already departed for wintering grounds in South America. Think about that. The birds are gone before our summer season even gets going. Smart birds. But this column is about beginnings, not endings, and beginning this week in a marsh near you, is another nesting season for willets. What do they look like? Oh, kind of a like a straight-billed Clapper Rail or a thickset Greater Yellowlegs. If you have any question about the identification just wait. The bird will confirm your identification by calling its own name. As expressed by Willets, it sounds like the bird is screaming:
Pill, will, willet. Pill, will, willet. Pill, will willet. How long do they call? Well, like I said they arrive in mid-April and leave early-July. So they call for a couple, three months. They arrive with their mouths open. They don’t close them until they leave. That, at least, is my observation. Next to Laughing Gulls, Willet is about the
noisiest denizen of the marsh. But if you still harbor doubts that what you are looking at is a Willet, wait until the bird f lies. When perched, Willets are about as plain looking as a bird can possibly be. In f light, the birds bold, white wing stripe pretty nearly explodes into view. It’s actually a striking bird, in a Jekyll and Hyde sort of way. I have a sort of love hate relationship with the bird. I love them because they are a vocal and visible component of Cape May. I hate them because they can be a too vocal and too visible component of Cape May (particularly if you are, as I sometimes am, compelling to walk across open salt marsh). Willets are very territorial. This means they take people strolling through their territory personally and ill. They express their displeasure by hovering over your head and screaming their names over and over again. But it gets worse. One Willet expressing its displeasure

Bird Droppings ? From Page 81 almost invariably attracts other Willets who add their angst and voice to the chorus. In short order, a stroller might attract a posse of six or eight Willets, all hovering over your head and striving to be the loudest. It’s quite irritating, and it prompts most trespassers to retreat. If you can, that is. The problem is that most people who walk across salt marsh have some purpose or mission in mind. My own problems began the day I elected to conduct breeding surveys of Northern Harriers. Harriers and Willets occupy the same territory. If you want to get close to harriers, you are going to upset Willets. There are no two ways about it. Or maybe there is. You can stay on the pavement and help preserve the general tranquility, or step into the marsh and bring about mayhem. Me? I’m a confirmed sideliner these days — like to watch my Willets from a distance. And from where I sit, silence reigns. At least for a few more days. You can also experience Willets while you are walking along the beach — on one of Pete Dunne’s weekly bird walks. Head over to the Cape May Bird Observatory
Behold the Willet, one of the noisiest denizens of the marshes in Cape May — THE place for all your nature needs. You can pick up a free birding map, checklist and schedule of our daily walks, and you can talk to our staff about optics, field guides, walks, and anything else you might need — or don’t know you need yet! CMBO is located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point (609-884-2736), and is open EVERY day from 9:30am to 4:30pm. Our staff are always available to help with any questions. While you are there, scan the bookshelves for some bargains in the used and
vintage books section, look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise including a terrific lithograph done just for the Cape May Bird Observatory, or just browse around. Take a look at the sighting sheets to check what’s being seen out in the field, check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars. If it’s a nice day, sit outside on our garden benches and enjoy the birds at the feeders and the view of Lake Lily. If you can’t make it in person, you can also visit us online www.BirdCapeMay.org, where birding Cape May is only a click away! Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for the New York Times. You can join Pete for his Monday morning walk at the South Cape May Meadows. Just meet by 7:30am in The Nature Conservancy parking lot on Sunset Boulevard. Loaner binoculars are available at no cost; the walk is $6 for CMBO or NJ Audubon members; $10 for non-members.

Archeologists have discovered the first “ball” used for Early Man’s sporting use, in a cave system in Vermont. The ball, the same size and shape as a baseball, even has a thumbworn indent in the bottom right, and marks on it suggesting regular impacts from bone “bats”, some 50,000 years ago. The original is headed for the Smithsonian, but exact granite replicas have been carved, and are available in a limited edition of 3,000. Only $80, plus shipping.

The Dating Column
Stella Dixon’s take on romance on Old Cape Island
I
SAY I want a relationship. I say I want a marriage. I say I want a family and a minivan with those stickpeople stickers on the back window announcing to everyone driving behind me that someone has loved me enough to procreate with me. I say that I desperately want a man… Until one asks me out for dinner. Then I decide that his hands are too small. Or his pants too tight. Or his head too… squished. He’s too hipster. Too preppy. Too muscley. Too nice. Too mean. I’ve turned down four of Cape May’s available, handsome men in the past three months for no good reason at all. One because his teeth were so... white. And considering that my job description requires dating, this is a problem. And considering that beggars can’t be choosers, this is stupid. So why am I sabotaging myself? I’ve spent some time ( you know, all the time I’m not spending on dates) thinking about this, and here is what I’ve come up with... First, I’m exhausted by the thought of all the getting-to-know-you talk. Who has
time for it? I don’t want to be wined and dined when I’m working sixty hours a week. In my free time, I want to sit on the couch in my underwear with a spoon, a jar of peanut butter, and the one guy who doesn’t need me to shave my legs or be a good conversationalist... my dog, Rudy. But more importantly, I’m terrified. For whatever reason, each heartache I’ve experienced has been worse than the time before. And it lingers longer. I have no rea-
son to believe it won’t keep progressing like this. After all, I’m no longer dating ridiculous people, like you do when you’re nineteen and good hair and a decent fake ID rank high among the qualities you need in a significant other. Now, I want more. I’m looking for the guy who will stick by me even when I’m too senile to drive that stickered minivan of ours. But the thought of finding that someone and losing him? Or of falling in unreciprocated love? I’m not sure I can handle it again. Or at least, I don’t want to have to. They say it’s better to have loved and lost, but I think that’s still up for debate. When you love someone — really love someone — you love them with everything you’ve got, and who can afford risking damage to everything they’ve got? But all of this shying away from risk is making me feel like a big pansy. And dammit, I may be a lot of things — terminally single among them — but I am not a wuss. So, I’m making a vow to myself... and to the next guy who asks me out. Whoever you are — old, young, nice, mean — I accept. No matter how white your teeth are.
