HE Cape May Artists Cooperative will feature the works of Eliza Diets, Lee Hadjuk and Mary Stewart in its gallery at West End Garage from May 4-June3. The Environmental Commission of West Cape May is sponsoring a free gardening program, “Go Green, Go Native – Backyard Habitat for Birds, Butterflies, Dragonflies and more” with local naturalist, Pat Sutton. Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

The Temple Connection A FEW weeks ago we rambled at some length about the connections that have sprung up between Cape May and Temple University since Ed Mahaney, a three-time graduate of the Philadelphia school, was elected mayor. We remarked, somewhat f lippantly, that perhaps the mayor was looking for a statue to be erected in his honor on the Temple grounds. So you can imagine how intrigued we were when our attention was drawn to a letter that details just how close the relationship is between Mayor Mahaney and Temple.

The letter is published in full on the right. Yes, it is private correspondence between a member of the university’s staff and a former student, but it exists in the public domain — we found it online.

Besides, what makes it a matter of public interest is the fact that the letter is dated August, 2009, a year after Mr Mahaney was elected, and discusses the possibility of him donating $1 million to Temple in return for their sports complex being named for his late parents. The letter was written a week after it was announced that the city was paying Temple $53,000 to come up with a business and management plan for the new Convention Hall.

And two months after that, the city announced another hookup with Temple — this time paying $48,000 for students from the Landscaping Architecture and Horticulture department to come up with designs for some of Cape May’s open spaces, even though, two years earlier, the city had paid a professional landscape

HAPPY CINCO DE MAYO, CAPE MAY! Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 architecture firm, Rhodeside and Harwell, to come up with a comprehensive plan along the the same lines.

And most recently, a Philadelphiabased landscaping firm owned by a Temple professor was awarded a $14,875 contract for work on Convention Hall, without the job going out to bid.

When we wrote about these connections a few weeks ago, we made the point that we weren’t comfortable with this very tight connection. Why weren’t New Jersey schools like Rutger’s, Stockton, Rowan, TCNJ, and, you know, Princeton asked to collaborate? And you could also argue that having students take charge of such important matters as the running of Convention Hall is not a stellar idea.

But let’s get back to the issue that makes us really squirmy. The opening sentence of that letter congratulates Mayor Mahaney on his “philanthrophy” at Temple and in the next sentence mentions the “unique town-grown partnership with our school of Hospitality & Tourism Management.”

We don’t believe that the city money that’s been pouring into Temple’s coffers since the summer of 2009 should in any way be connected to the mayor’s “philanthropy”

towards his alma mater.

The letter goes on to “resume the dialogue” about whether the mayor is interested in gifting the university the proceeds of his life insurance and his Cape May home, along with a cash donation of $100,000 over a five-year period.

Yes, we believe it is simply a coincidence that the city has since paid Temple $101,000 for the aforementioned programs.

But, nevertheless, this surely amounts to a serious conf lict of interest.

Don’t you think the taxpayers of Cape May are entitled to know that while the city has been writing checks to Temple that the mayor has been holding discussions about a partnership that would forever stamp the Mahaney name on the campus?

If Mr Mahaney acted like the mayor is supposed to act in the current form of government, this would not be such a big deal. But as we have spelled out before, Mr Mahaney is not merely the ceremonial head of government. In the opinion of many, he’s the man who makes most of the important decisions around City Hall, in direct contravention of municipal laws.

We called the mayor on Sunday, the day before we went to press. We asked him if he recalled the letter we were talking about.

“I don’t recall it off the top of my head,” he said. That seemed strange, given that a

letter proposing a $1 million deal resulting in a sports complex being named for your parents isn’t likely the kind of matter easily forgotten. We then read the letter out to the mayor, who said, “That sounds like a letter that a university would send any number of alumni, and that’s all I’m going to say about that.” Then he hung up.

On Monday, we called the man who wrote the letter, Scott Koskoski, who is now the Director of Athletics at Chatham University, in Pittsburgh. He said he remembered the conversation he had with the mayor over the naming rights, but added, “The mayor is a good friend of mine.

I’m not clear on what the ramifications of my comments would be. I’d prefer not to comment at this point.”

He suggested we talk to David Unruh, Senior Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Temple. He said he was “familiar with the discussion” but that it “has not come to fruition.” When we asked if it was likely to, he said, “I’m not at liberty to share private donor information.”

We also spoke to Deputy Mayor, Jack Wichterman, and asked him if he thought the correspondence was troubling. “Was there an ulterior motive? I sure as heck don’t know,” he said. “I don’t know what conversations went on back then. Why

But I was not involved.

“The mayor has devoted his whole life from what I’ve seen to Temple and Cape May. Does he do things that are not correct? Whether you like him or not, you have to respect how hard he works.

“If you think he’s done something illegal, go to the prosecutor.”

We asked Mr Wichterman how he feels about the widely held view that the mayor runs City Hall, even though the form of government here expressly places the power in the hands of the City Manager, Bruce MacLeod, who was given the job fulltime a few months after the mayor took office, in 2008.

“Is he a forceful guy?” Mr Wichterman said of the mayor. “He’s very forceful. Does he want control? There is no doubt. Was it unethical for him not to let the council know about this? I personally don’t think so.”

On the mayor’s relationship with Bruce MacLeod, Mr Wichterman said, “It’s not the way it should be running, but if [Bruce]

is comfortable with it...”

But what if the taxpayers aren’t comfortable with the mayor contravening municipal law? “Then the taxpayers can vote him out of office in November; they’re the ones with the last say.”

Mr Wichterman added, “I think you guys are on a witch hunt with Ed.” We’d prefer to call it a truth hunt.

We agree with Mr Wichterman that the mayor works hard. That’s not the issue.

The issue is that we believe his hunger for power sometimes corrupts his judgment, and we have described, in detail, examples of this in the last three years.

Lessons Learned HAS there been a generation yet which doesn’t have doubts about the future of the human race after witnessing the antics of an adolescent? Well, we’re here to tell you that some of our own fears were allayed after spending last Wednesday evening at Lucky Bones with some of Lower Cape May Regional High School’s senior class, at the

Cape May Chapter of the National Honor Society Ninth Annual Most Inf luential Teacher Awards Program.

We spoke with Jane Rife, LCMR’s National Honor Society advisor, who explained that every senior was asked (this was an optional assignment) if they wanted to write an essay about the teacher who influenced them the most. “We got outstanding essays from 20 seniors, about 20 different teachers, from elementary school, junior high, and high school, as well as a now-retired guidance counselor and a coach. Each student and the teacher they picked is here tonight, and the teacher didn’t know until they walked into the room which student nominated them.”

Jackie Siscone is an English teacher at LCMR, and facilitates the Exit Zero Student Of The Week column. She had been singled out by student Haley Matsinger, and we asked for her thoughts on the honor. “This is what makes teaching worthwhile,” Jackie told us. “For a kid to take time out of her busy schedule to write an essay that’s not going to be graded — that’s a big deal.” We asked Haley what made her select Jackie, and her first words were, “Well, have you met her?”

From Page 16 Indeed, we have. “Writing was something I hated more than anything — a blank page used to give me a panic attack,” Haley tells us. “Ms Siscone took something I hated and made me love it. Plus, she holds kids to a higher standard. She doesn’t tell us to behave better. She models better behavior. ” This was a touching event, with lots of laughter and some tears. It may be a while before we forget Matt McGaffney’s tales of times spent with Business teacher Mary Rose Bispels, or the moving words of Julia Fernandez about how she wished History teacher Thomas Higgins “had been my father, because you are the greatest man I have ever known.” Or the response of math teacher Raymond Obst to Katie Kincaide’s selection of him: “All I know is that my knee still hurts from Dancing with the Faculty.”

We were floored by the selection of Joyce Wirpsza by senior Jacob Vandermark, as she was his fourth-grade teacher, but he never forgot her kindness to him when he transferred to her class from a different school.

And then there was senior Becca Holden, who said she “didn’t have the words to express her gratitude” to music teacher John



Drechen, whose dedication persuaded her to stay in the school band when her commitment to it was wavering. His response to the award summed up the evening: “We have the best job in the world.”

Girl Walks Into A Restaurant DID you hear the story about the German lady who opened a Mexican restaurant?

Apparently, it had a really happy ending, because Gecko’s, over on Carpenter’s Lane, continues to be a mecca for Mexican and Southwest cuisine devotees in Cape May. We chatted with Susi Bithell about what it is that makes Gecko’s such a hot spot, and inquiring minds wanted to know – how DID a German girl end up in a Mexican spot? “Well, when I met my husband Randy during my internship, Mexican and Southwestern cuisine was his passion. So it then became mine — it was that simple.”

We asked Susi what is the most popular menu item at Gekko’s, and she answered quite readily that it is the burritos. “The

chicken ones especially, with the red and green sauces.” (This just happens to be the go-to lunch order of a certain editor-type we happen to know.) “The house salad is popular, too,” Susi says. We can name at least three people in town who practically subsist on this salad all season long — what’s the deal? “It’s the dressing,” Susi tells us. “It’s a brandied onion dressing that we make here.

It got a mention in Philadelphia magazine.”

Any suggestions for dinner? “The salmon is really good, and it always sells well.” And her personal favorite from the menu? “That would be the crab enchiladas,” she tells us.

“They’re spicy, but not crazy spicy.”

Gecko’s will be open seven days a week for lunch and dinner by the end of May. In preparation for the onslaught of activity that running a seasonal restaurant in Cape May entails, what do Susi and and her family do in the off-season? “We just enjoy spending time together as a family,” Susi says. “And we cook a lot, too. We test out new recipes, and we just cook for each other, instead of cooking for everybody else.”

PARTING SHOT Whoops! In last week’s Talk of the Town, we wrote that Ella’s Good To Go, the new

eatery on the Carptenter’s Square Mall (owned by Nicole Pense and Mike Boschen of Bliss ice cream) will open at the end of May, but this was wrong. Ella’s is already open, and that’s a pretty cool thing for our town; Ella’s is breakfast, lunch and dessert... as fresh and local as possible.

A Shameful Show Of Disrespect

T

How Cape May City Council mishandled the issue of Mariners Hall... by Ben Miller

HIS story involves a hidden agenda by local officials, what some believe is discrimination against a disabled veteran and the mistreatment of a large segment of the Cape May populace. This is a story about what happens when people get a little bit of power and let it go to their heads.

I’m the disabled veteran in question and both my lawyer and I believe that my civil rights were violated by the city of Cape May, who failed to make “reasonable accommodations” as mandated by law by the Americans with Disabilities Act. The “reasonable accommodation” I requested was for a letter I wrote to be read at a city council meeting. That’s it.

The reason you’re not reading about a lawsuit being filed against the city is simple — I don’t want your money. I consulted with an attorney recommended by the Disabled American Veterans, of which I am a life member. He advised me that if I file a lawsuit, I would be seeking monetary damages from the city and compensation for my attorney. All that would come from the taxpayers, as would the city’s

legal defense costs. I declined to proceed.

Here’s the basics of what happened. Last year, I suggested the name Mariners Hall be used for the new convention facility. I wanted to honor Cape May’s maritime history. I also wanted to honor the fishermen, the US Navy and Coast Guard sailors, commercial sailors and steamship crews.

My suggestion fell on deaf ears. Cape May’s new Marketing Director, Mike Whipple, recently shrugged off the idea, telling a CBS news crew, “There is a fishermen’s memorial on the harbor that honors those lost at sea.” The mayor and council agree with him, which is a shame, because he’s wrong.

The Fishermen’s Memorial doesn’t honor people like the crew of the USS Jacob Jones, who were killed when the ship was torpedoed by a German U-boat off the coast of Cape May in 1942; the men killed when the SS Northern Pacific caught fire and sunk in 1922; or the women and children killed when the passenger liner, SS Carolina, was torpedoed by a German U-boat in 1918. Sadly, there are more examples. One would think the term “Fishermen’s Memorial”

is self-explanatory, but apparently not.

My next step was to create an online petition, asking the city to adopt the name Mariners Hall. I received 278 signatures, many of them Cape May fishermen, and members of the US Coast Guard. Many people chose to include written statements about why they signed the petition, noting loved ones and friends who were lost, or their own experiences working the waters off the Cape May coast.

The goal was to honor ALL mariners, those who perished, those who made their living on the sea and those who continue to go out and risk their lives every day.

Prior to the council’s Work Session on April 3, I sent a copy of the petition, explaining the disabilities that prevented me from presenting it in person. I sent copies to Mayor Ed Mahaney, Deputy Mayor Jack Wichterman and councilmembers Bill Murray, Deanna Fiocca and Terri Swain.

I also sent a private message to Mayor Mahaney, explaining that my only goal was to

I suggested that if the city didn’t want to change the name, they could introduce something to dedicate the building to the mariners and erect a plaque. I received no response, and neither the petition, my letter, or the notion of a dedication was discussed at the meeting.

I tried again before the April 17 regular council meeting. Again, I sent the petition, the reasons people gave for supporting it and a letter, explaining my disabilities and why I could not appear in person. I sent copies to the same people as before and I faxed a copy of everything to Diane Weldon, the City Clerk, and to Exit Zero Editor/Publisher, Jack Wright.

I specifically mentioned that my disabilities prevented me from appearing and referenced the Americans with Disabilities Act. I made it clear that all I wanted was for my voice to be heard, and for them to at least read my letter. I reminded them all that council rules specify that if you want something on the agenda, it should be sent to the City Clerk ahead of the meeting and that there were no rules about residency or land ownership. Everyone is supposed to have a voice.

Thursday, May 3, 2012 Not only did the council ignore my letter, but the City Clerk was directed to read a letter from Mickey and Mitze Blomkvest, who no longer live in Cape May and were not at the meeting. The Blomkvests’ letter was an assault on my character, an attempt to embarrass me and destroy my credibility.

To add insult to injury, Deputy Mayor Wichterman followed the letter with personal comments about me. Mr Wichterman said that I have made mistakes with things I’ve said about Convention Hall and he hoped nobody was paying attention to me. He then thanked the Blomkvests. It was inappropriate and a slap in the face, because they knew I could not physically appear in person and defend myself.

Deputy Mayor Wichterman’s comments were not only cowardly, assailing a disabled veteran who could not be present to defend himself — they were vague and unqualified.

I challenge him to name one thing I have said about Convention Hall that was incorrect. I’ve been a critic of the process used to build this hall and the way the city was making changes to the plan in secret, without a council vote or notifying the public.

After those comments were written, the city started to address all the change orders publicly and vote on them, in accordance with the municipal code. They’re at their seventh change

order now. I said the mayor had no authority to sign an $85,000 contract with the Philly Pops without council approval and Mr Wichterman said I was wrong. At the last meeting, he was forced to admit that I was right, though he blamed the city’s attorney, Tony Monzo.

I cannot understand the way that the council rejected the notion of dedicating Convention Hall to Cape May’s mariners, the fishermen and sailors who are the backbone of the local economy. We’re talking about a plaque here. It gives the impression that the members of council have little regard for the fishermen and sailors in this community.

There is no doubt that the city has discriminated against me by not reading my letter or even acknowledging it. The real question is why? I don’t believe they set out to discriminate against me because of my disabilities. I believe they ignored me, and the mariners I was representing, because of a long-standing grudge Mayor Mahaney has against me and Exit Zero.

The mayor says, “Jump!” and the council, along with City Manager Bruce MacLeod, ask, “How high?” Luckily, elections are coming up and Cape May citizens will have the opportunity to end the puppet show at City Hall. And maybe then, the city will see fit to hold a ceremony for the dedication of Cape May’s mariners.

The Movie Column

HE Israeli film Footnote opened recently, having been nominated for Best Foreign Film at this year’s Oscars. It tells the story of a father and son who are both research scholars in the Talmud (a central holy text in Judaism). The father, Eliezer Shkolnik (played by Shlomo BarAba) is a purist, a typical researcher who hides in the basement diligently pursuing his work. His son, Uriel (played by Lori Ashkenazi), is more a celebrity researcher — smooth and polished — who would rather be on stage with cameras f lashing than sharing space with his father in the basement.

Eliezer is given the news he’s waited 20 years to receive — he’s been named “Researcher of the Year” by the Israel Ministry of Education. He is f lying high, having been turned down for the award for years. You can almost guess what’s coming next. Uriel, his son, is called by the ministry to come to a special secret meeting, where he learns that his father was called by mistake, and that the prize

Footnote is a compelling, storyteller’s film about father-and-son researchers was meant for Uriel.

Thus begins an outstanding telling of a story with more depth and compelling action than most films in theaters today.

And yes, it’s about researchers! There’s a central scene where the father trashes his son’s work during a newspaper interview,

while the son carefully selects words to praise his father as he ghost-writes a prize recommendation to the ministry. This is a storyteller’s film that refuses to get too heady despite its heavy subject matter.

Like a real footnote, this film can easily be overlooked if you’re not careful. I urge you to search it out.

The Hunger Games debate continues.

Last week, Catherine countered my review of The Hunger Games, saying I should have read the book before judging the movie.

Reader Diane disagrees: “Not only CAN you review a film without reading the book, you should! If the lead character is supposed to be a ‘modern day Joan of Arc,’ that should come across onscreen regardless of what happens in the book — otherwise there’s something wrong with the movie. If we use this logic, you can’t review a book without reviewing the film version of that book. And that’s just silly.”

Open House

Exit Zero tours a local home for sale. This week... 680 Washington Street, Unit 1 WHERE IS IT? 680 Washington Street is in the middle of the historic district, but tucked away from the street. You get a clear view of the folks strolling by, but they won’t even know you’re there.

WHAT IS IT? Unit 1 is a three-story, approximately 2,000 square foot condo, but this is a little misleading. When you hear “condo,” it’s tempting to think of many cookie-cutter homes, but that’s not the case. This is one of only three units, and all of them are different.

WHO HAS THE LISTING? Chris Bezaire of Coldwell Banker is your guy. He was born and raised in Cape May, he’s a fifth-generation agent, and he’s been practicing real estate for six years in an office that’s been around for 109. Plus, he’s handsome. (Oh, like you don’t check out the agents when you check out the homes, too.)

HOW MANY ROOMS? There are two full bedrooms, two full baths, and one halfbath. We love the little den that can be a bedroom (it’s got a Murphy bed) or a den.

WHAT’S THE VIBE? It’s warm and inviting (thanks in part to the no-main-

tenance cedar siding and bamboo-lined driveway). It’s also airy (thanks to a living room that f lows freely into a dining area, a spacious kitchen, and the glass doors which allow for a lot of natural light). “It’s a fabulous place,” owner Carolyn Detrich told us.

“I’m just ready for something a bit smaller.”

AMENITIES? First, it’s quiet, quiet, quiet. “This is across from the firehouse,” Chris told us, “but when they were doing their landscaping, you couldn’t even hear the mowers back here.” What better way to enjoy the quiet than on one of three decks,

all of them great for reading, barbequing, sipping on an iced tea (or something stronger), and people-watching. We also love the ample storage space (including an attic and a one car garage/workshop). The place comes fully furnished, with a washer and dryer and — our favorite — a beautiful wooden hutch Carolyn bought with her husband in 1960 when they were married.

“It’s an antique,” Carolyn told us, “which, I suppose, makes me an antique, too.”

INSIDER TIP: The wall-to-wall carpeting has been well-maintained, but if this isn’t your style, go ahead and pull it up... the original wood f loors are below.

RANDOM FACT: Before it was a condo, this property was home to an auto body garage. If you’ve been reading Exit Zero, you know there were approximately seventeen garages on the island during the 1950s.

PRICE: The asking price is $529,000, and the condo fees are $3,000. (That money keeps the bamboo in check, among other things.)

It seems a bit naïve, however, to plunk oneself at a crowded bar during happy hour alone and expect not to be approached. Gentlemen will assume that a lady seated at a bar wants company. It may not be fair, but then again it’s not fair that the Answer Lady is not six feet tall and blonde. But she deals with it.

The Old Fogey

D

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

EAR friends, it is time to become Mexican. This is not a decision I have made lightly, as you know I have your best interest at heart.

But in view of that global warming thing that one hears is very much in vogue, I have calculated that in a mere few decades the sea level will have risen enough to have submerged some long stretches of The Shore, and crucially cutting off the main access routes that visitors take to fill our coffers with gold in summertime.

So, we need a plan, and have to be prepared for that day when we cast off the ropes that moor our island to the mainland, and raise the masts and hoist the sails. I had considered just floating us over what is now Wildwood, and mooring us atop that sunken Soddom, but think that is not ambitious enough. What we need is a new scene entirely, and Mexico is just the perfect destination: a warm climate, a friendly people (excepting those drug cartel folks, but we will steer clear of such types) and an all-new market for our saltwater taffy,

not to mention Uncle Bill’s famed pancakes.

The trip is somewhat around 3000 miles, according to a quick look at my 1780 Mappe of The Knowne Worlde that I have on the wall, and involves a detour past the part that alleges “here be dragons.” My best calculations are that Cape May can achieve a seagoing speed of four knots, with favorable wind, so the entire trip would take no more than six weeks. Obviously we will need to take on supplies of water and food to last the trip, and since we will officially be a vessel,

I am taking the liberty of appointing myself Captain, and having uniforms made for all of you. I favor white, with fetching blue piping, short pants for all, and cute little deck shoes. Also, tiny hats with ribbons. Fear not, I shall be a benevolent Captain, with lashings limited to severe infractions of ship discipline, such as talking back to the Captain, refusing to sing sea shanties when asked, not keeping one’s uniform clean and refusing to be lashed once a day as a matter of routine and to enforce discipline.

Should we, along the way, decide upon replenishing supplies, I have arranged a Letter of Marque that allows us to raid coastal towns and to board other vessels and take what we need, offering payment in trinkets, “I Heart Cape May” XXXL white tee shirts and beach passes.

I am announcing a flag contest, as we need to strike our colors: designs should steer clear of such clichés as a skull and crossbones, and judging will be skewed to favor those bearing my own visage. The winner will become my cabin boy/girl.

Activity Of The Week

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: World Series Of Birding.

T’S for the birds. It’s easy to forget that as you plan for the World Series of Birding. It’s easy to think that it’s about the competition, or the food, or the bug bites, or the stories you’re going to tell over drinks at the C-View later.

It’s for the birds, and the World Series of Birding has raised over nine million dollars for bird conservation.

New Jersey Audubon’s 29th annual World Series of Birding will be held Saturday, May 12. More than 100 teams of birders will compete throughout New Jersey to identify the most birds in 24 hours, and many of them will be right here in Cape May. They’ll be out all day and night, identifying birds by sight or sound, and racing to have their checklists to the finish line by midnight.

Watching birds is educational. Watching birders is equally educational. For example, birders have excellent bladders, and rarely stop for rest room breaks, even though they all carry flasks of “tea.” They use all of the pockets in those funny vests, and at least one of those pockets contains a book by Pete Dunne. They don’t whine about cuts on their

Birders of all ages will participate in New Jersey Audobon’s 29th Annual World Series of Birding legs from walking through brush. Birders are really good at whispering, but they get very loud if you shine your headlights on them.

They get a fair amount of exercise, and they pack their coolers with great food. During the World Series, they are more generous with that food than they are with information.

There are lots of teenage birders, and

they get very competitive. Teenagers want to raise more money and spot more birds than anyone else. They leave their phones in the car while they hunt, and when they return, they use the phones to play bird calls. Teenage birders are very good at ignoring their drivers, which is good, because drivers who are not official team members are forbidden to provide guidance or share tidbits heard from other birders. Drivers are also forbidden, apparently, from making jokes about early birds catching worms, or birds of a feather flocking together. Drivers who plan to root for the team from Cornell — there’s always a team from Cornell, so “Go, Big Red!” — are urged by their teenagers to inflict their jokes on the team from Cornell. Birders get a little cranky in the middle of the night.

The World Series of Birding brings birders from around the world to Cape May. The event also brings worldwide media attention to the need for conservation. You can learn more about birding, or sponsor a team, at njaudubon.org.

LOWER Cape May Regional junior Meg Beane-Fox earned herself a spot in the Region III All-South Jersey Jazz Choir, which held its concert on Friday, April 20th at Lenape High School.

The oldest daughter of Sandy and Donald Fox, Beane-Fox participates in a variety of school activities, ranging from tennis to editor of Key Club to section leader of the flutes in the Lower Cape May Regional High School band. She is also ranked in the top 10% of the junior class, excelling in an all honors and advanced placement curriculum classes.

When asked if her mother, who is a music teacher at LCMR, has an effect on her love for singing and for playing the flute, Beane-Fox replied, “If my mom wasn’t a teacher, I’d still be in the same position I am now.”

Beane-Fox would like to attend either Wesleyan University or Brandeis University. Although she has a passion for music, she says she wants to pursue a career in Spanish.

No matter where Meg Beane-Fox ends up, it seems apparent that she’ll be successful in everything she does.

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

AVE you ever wondered why some people are birders and some not? This column will address this question. It does seem odd, doesn’t it?

That our species should be divided by an avocation that common sense dictates should be universally embraced. I mean I can understand why some people are Republicans and some are Democrats, why some people are rich and some not so rich, or why some people stand by their convictions and others on principles. Or, why some people like chocolate and others not (although to be honest, why wouldn’t anyone prefer chocolate?).

But why some people should have an interest in birds and some have not... let’s address the have nots later. The fact is, people who watch birds are simply more...

FUN. There you have it. The very heart and soul of bird watching. People watch birds because it’s fun. Like running your dog on the beach or throwing a frisbee or watching clouds, or bike riding down a country lane with the world all dewy fresh

and the smell of fresh-cut hay in the air...

Fun. Sadly, many people seem to have forgotten how to have fun. Instead they seek to be engaged or entertained. Birders revel in having fun. Why else would they get up so early? You’ve heard the expression the early bird gets the worm? Well, the early birder gets the bird that gets the worm.

Worms don’t have a great deal of enthusiasm for this three-part dynamic but then fun doesn’t figure very much in the life cycle of earthworms. How do I know? Well, have you ever seen an earthworm run a dog on a beach, or play frisbee, or eat ice cream? Even sex is reduced to “exchanging genetic material” if you’re an earthworm. How much fun can that be?

Bird watching is also affirming. It allows you to get up close and personal with the natural world (which is, let’s face it, the most natural thing on earth). For instance, if you see a particular bird, you know you are in a particular habitat. If you are in a particular habitat, by golly you are going to see the birds that belong in that habitat. How natural is that?

Birding is a window that opens upon the universe. It’s a way of putting your fingers on the pulse of the whole, natural order. You are in touch. You are attuned.

You are one with nature. It’s Ohm wrapped in feathers. It’s the enlightenment in all

The Dating Column

Stella Dixon’s take on romance on Old Cape Island

I

USED to think I was due a good relationship. You experience enough dating disappointments, and you start feeling as though you’re due something great. Or at least, owed a dinner or two with a guy who’s going to pay his half of the bill.

Then I took a probability course in college. Turns out, there’s something called the gambler’s fallacy. Say you go to Atlantic City. Say you pull the lever on the Wheel of Fortune slot machine one hundred times.

Say you lose… every single time. Gamblers may think this means they’re due a win. They can’t walk away now because their machine is primed for a jackpot. But that’s just wishful thinking. The odds never change. The chances are exactly the same, even on your 101st go. Flip a coin 1,000 times, see George Washington’s head each time, and you may think you’re bound to land on tails soon enough. Wrong. The odds aren’t getting any better.

And so it goes with dating, I have learned. The chances your next date will be a dud don’t decrease in proportion to

the amount of duds you’ve already suffered through. This is not the plot of a quirky romantic comedy, where we can laugh at the misfortune of the clumsy though wellintentioned heroine because we know, in the end, her prince will make all of the previous relationship disasters something to chuckle about over candlelit dinners and moonlit picnics.

How depressing.

I was thinking about this when someone

I used to know called out of the blue last week. Sadly, her last boyfriend passed away and she was worried about, as they say, getting back out there. “He was the one I would have married,” she told me. “I found a man who made me happy. A man who loved me.

A man who was my soulmate. What are the chances of finding that again?”

And that’s when it hit me.

The chances are exactly the same as they were before. If it’s true that duds don’t make you due for a win, then it’s also true that finding a soulmate doesn’t make you due for a loss. Say you pull the level of the Wheel of Fortune machine and win. Go ahead and pull it again. You’re just as likely to hit the jackpot.

Maybe the key is to stop spending so much time figuring out the odds, determining what it is that we’re owed — good or bad.

The truth is, you can calculate the risk and guess at the probablity, but it will only ever be that — a guess. We may gamble with our hearts all our lives and never find love. We may gamble only once and get lucky. But dammit, at least we’re playing the game.
