Subscriber Of The Week

Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Jane Menendez of Erma. (Yes, locals — you can subscribe and have EZ delivered right to your door each week!) How long have you been in Cape May? I came here in 1973 for a teaching position and I never left. I’m originally from Elizabeth, New Jersey. Favorite thing about Cape May? There is always something to do here, all year long. Least favorite thing? That would have to be the parking meters in the summer months. Favorite restaurants? I love Cucina Rosa, Oyster Bay, C-View Inn, and Hemingways at The Grand. Favorite place to stay? My house. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? I would love to see a centrally-located, multi-level parking garage. I think it would be a real asset to the town. Favorite thing about Exit Zero? I love all the pictures, and Jack [Wright]’s informative and entertaining columns. Least favorite thing about Exit Zero? I don’t think I have a least favorite thing about Exit Zero. What’s your T-shirt size? Either a ladies’ medium or a men’s small. Thanks.

Talk Of The Town

Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

Much Ado About Nothing WE went to last Friday’s meeting at Convention Hall that the City of Cape May held in order to inform the public of the results of its three-year-long collaboration with Temple’s School of Tourism and Hospitality Management, which cost the city $53,000. Sitting at a long table just off to the side of the windows that frame a quite lovely panoramic view of the ocean were four representatives from Temple. In the audience were members of Cape May’s city council along with a few dozen interested citizens, and the city’s attorney, Tony Monzo. We’re not sure why he had to be there, though maybe the city was expecting some awkward questions given our recent Templerelated revelations. City Manager Bruce MacLeod and Mayor Ed Mahaney stood at the back of the room, though the mayor regularly walked up to answer questions during the meeting. Dr Elizabeth Barber, an Associate Dean in Temple’s tourism department, said the project had been very beneficial to the university, and that she hoped that it will be for the city, too. The rest of Temple’s representatives spoke about “distinct deliverables”... but as far as we can tell, they haven’t yet delivered on them. There was a great deal of talk about “developing a long-range plan to ensure the viability of Cape May as a desired tourist destination” based largely on surveys that have been taken from residents, tourists, and “key stakeholders” (although there was some confusion among some of the Temple representatives

as to when these categories overlap). The information gleaned from this project? That the internet plays an important role in how people learn about Cape May. That people come here to relax. And also to dine. But the “most interesting” thing to do in Cape May, according to respondents, is visit the beach. The vast majority of people who come here do so in groups of one or two, although people also come in groups of three sometimes (hmmm). That most visitors are 51-64 years of age. Many come from Pennsylvania. Although plenty hail from New Jersey and New York, too. Cape May’s Victorian charm is important. Visitors tend to like it here, but they’re not thrilled with the parking (34% would suggest doing something about that). And the benefits of tourism, in case you were on the fence, “outweigh its negative impacts.” The Temple panel suggested that the next step is to maintain the atmosphere of Cape May while “strengthening its position in the market.” One way to do this, they said, is to capitalize on the sense of tradition here. Tradition is “the transmission of beliefs from one generation to the next,” according to the slide that showed up on the projector screen. (We’re trying really, really hard NOT to be sarcastic about this, but, damn, we can’t resist.) We think it’s entirely awesome that the good people of Temple were able to make this point, since we imagine there aren’t many folks in this National Historic Landmark city who know the proper definition of tradition. The panel came up with two taglines. The first was “It’s a Cape May tradition.” (Please refer to the previous paragraph if

you forget what that means exactly.) This tagline will be used to promote a “wellknown attraction or program”, and one of the examples was, “A movie by the beach. It’s a Cape May tradition.” Uh-oh. Actually, it WAS a Cape May tradition, but that tradition kinda went by the wayside last year when the city allowed the Frank company to bulldoze Beach Theater, just a few hundred feet across the road from Convention Hall. That’s what we would call a REALLY bad example. The second tagline presented by the Temple panel was “The Cape May Way,” which will help divert the market from our direct competition... unless, of course, some evil genius further up the Parkway comes up with the slogan, “The Stone Harbor Way” or “The Avalon Way.” The panel also said that Cape May would head off the direct competition if we “create similar products but distinctive,” although there was no mention of what these products might be. We also, according to Temple, need to extend our tourism season. “What are the new creative ways we can use the new Convention Hall?” they asked. “We’ll create new, creative products,” the slide on the screen said. “The idea is to create new products that are creative,” one of the panel members explained. This outburst of overcreativity created quite a few snorts from the folks sitting behind us. The action plan the city is now tasked with will be two-fold. Step one is ideageneration, though call us crazy, but we

THE EXIT ZERO CARTOON... By Laurie Bender

on cape may beach, a refreshing drink — on the rocks Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 thought that Temple might have actually delivered some original ideas in return for the money they received. Step two is product conception. Isn’t that what the last three years were all about? We’d suggest a third step — get the people at Temple to write a check to Cape May City for $53,000. We’ve heard feedback from different people who attended the meeting, and we will sum up our own feelings in one word... pathetic. This was a giant pile of f luff, a presentation devoid of substance. If the mayor pulled this together to show the people that he had not, in fact, misspent the city’s money by signing a contract that awarded Temple $53,000, then he achieved quite the opposite effect.

All Washed Up DURINg World War II, the Army Corp of Engineers made a huge mistake. From the US Coast Guard base to the Delaware Bay, they dug the canal that protected Cape May ships from enemy torpedoes, but they positioned its jetty so that the natural movement of sand onto our beaches was thwarted. Forty-five years later, the Army Corp admitted the error. Cape May became the target of a 50-year beach replenishment plan that involves dredging every two years. (The first project happened in 1989.) Now, because it’s such a common sight, we don’t always pay much attention when a 200-foot dredge parks directly off our shore for the duration of a winter, spewing wet sand onto the beach with what amounts to a souped-up vacuum cleaner. And we don’t pay much attention when massive trucks with tires as tall as a fourth-grader come rolling by the

promenade. As long as we’ve got a spot to lay our towel come Memorial Day, we’re happy. But this time, something has captured our attention (and, in this case, the attention of major news outlets in the tri-state area). We’re referring, of course, to the sudden appearance of rocks from Gurney Street to Trenton Avenue. We wanted to know where they came from and if they could have been predicted by the engineers paid to anticipate replenishment-related problems. So we spent this week asking, after 23 years of watching it happen — what’s really going on with this beach-nourishment thing? Don’t misunderstand; we are not questioning its importance. Replenishment projects keeps our beaches intact, and thanks to Temple University, we know that these beaches are what bring people to Cape May. And we know that replenishment also creates a buffer. “Without this system in place, we would suffer the consequences of a storm’s direct hit,” Congressman Frank Lobiondo has said. “Remember Katrina?” And we further know that dredging can help counteract the dangerous slopes that led to 17 spinal cord injuries during the summer of 2008, the same year Cape May City began an awareness-raising campaign to drive home the importance of being cautious in these waters. But replenishment also costs a lot of money. The project that took place this past winter totaled $9 million… and our beaches are rocky. So what happened? We called Bill Hanson, Vice President of Business and Development at the Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company — the largest company of its kind in the country and the one responsible for this most recent Cape May project — to find out what, exactly, the dredging process entails. “Whenever people ask questions about dredging,” he told us, “the answer is usually, ‘It depends,’ because each project is so drastically different.” But we were able to glean some of the specifics. The ship that was brought in for the Cape May work was the 220-foot Illinois, a Cutter Suction dredge that has a digging capacity of 11 to 75 feet. A crew of between 20 and 30 men and women — operators, engineers, mechanics, and electricians — was on board 24hours a day. “It’s definitely shift work,” Bill said, “usually two weeks on, one week off.” And although the work is dangerous (“of course it is; you’re on the open ocean”), the ship isn’t an uncomfortable place to be. “We’re well taken care of,” Bill said. “Modern dredges are far more worker-friendly than

Page 16 Talk Of The Town ? From Page 14 they used to be.” The Illinois usually begins work in 30 to 40 feet of water, navigating an area about 200 feet wide over the course of a day with a simple series of anchors off the bow. Only the “best sand” areas are chosen, and as for what constitutes the best? “That’s where the engineers come in,” Bill said. “It’s the kind of sand that is most compatible with the beach.” A cutter, which is a mechanism attached to a long boom, excavates this earth, feeding sand into a pipe system. Like a vaccumm cleaner, the system sucks it back to the beach, a distance of up to five miles. “The engine is diesel,” Bill said, “and this gets converted to electric power through the use of generators.” But this begs the question — just as a vaccum cleaner occasionally sucks up an unwanted nickel, doesn’t the dredge ever suck up, say, an unwanted clam? Sea otter? Mermaid? Richard Pearsall, spokesman for the Army Corp of Engineers, explained that along the pipe system, there are screening devices known as baskets, generally six to eight feet wide. “I’ve seen them stop a whole bunch of rocks,” he said, “but never any fish

Thursday, May 24, 2012 or wildlife. Just a lot of rocks.” But these baskets are an invention that’s only about four years old, meaning that all of the dredging that took place in the 80s and 90s sucked a whole lot of stones onto the beach…hence, the problem we’re having now. Turns out, these golf ball-sized rocks have been around for quite some time. The reason they’re just now surfacing is that, in addition to last winter’s dredging, a separate backpassing endeavor took place at the same time. Project Manager Dwight Pakan of the Army Corp told us that backpassing is the process of taking sand (in this case, 635,000 cubic yards) from one area where there’s excess (Trenton to Gurney Avenues) and moving it to another, more depleted, area (Poverty and Wilmington Avenue). “The minimum level of protection,” he said, “is 25 feet, and in many areas, we are way above that. You can walk 50 to 100 feet or more from the promenade and still not be at the water, so it makes sense to redistribute.” Ralph Henry — co-owner of Arthur Henry Construction, the company contracted for the backpassing — sent us a picture of one of the terrain trucks filled by an excavator and used to transport 65,000 tons of Cape May sand. “These aren’t like

the trucks you’d see on the road. They hold around 30 or 40 tons each,” he told us. Ralph didn’t see anything particularly interesting — other than the stones, that is — while completing the backpassing work. “It was all pretty normal,” he said. But this isn’t to say there aren’t treasures to be found after a backpassing project. “People used to watch the dredge very closely,” Bill said, “because it’s possible to find some things of value coming out of the pipe.” Coins are the only things he would mention, but we got the feeling there’s more to the story. But, since “it’s very dangerous” to be hanging around a dredge, he doesn’t recommend going looking. At least not until after the dust has settled and the equipment is gone. Then, you’re bound to stumble across something special. Just ask all the sea glass searchers who are “thrilled” to be looking amongst these new rocks, according to local sea glass expert Darlene Eldredge. Gretchen Whitman, Director of the Nature Center, also told us that it’s not uncommon to come across rare finds after a dredging. “People have found Indian artifacts and shipwreck debris,” she said, “and

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 16

And The Beat Goes On

I came across a whale bone once.” (She explained, too, that while a dredging might temporarily disrupt natural habitats — displacing horseshoe crab eggs, for instance — the long-term effects can be positive, because it leads to a larger habitat area for wildlife.) But if you’d like to go looking amongst these rocks yourself, you better hurry. The city is having them removed by Virginiabased Reilly Construction between May 14 and June 15. It’s an undertaking that will cost $158,551 — $3,000 to $5,000 of which will come from the city itself, the rest from the Army Corp and Department of Environmental Protection. The city has taken some heat for these rocks from angry beach-goers who don’t care about looking for sea glass and artifcats — they just want their smooth sand back. But we think you can’t blame the city for this one, especially since the rocks have been around longer than this council. If you have that big of a problem with a couple of stones that will be gone soon enough, perhaps you should relax. With a drink. On the rocks.

Say “Good Scents” to anyone who knows Cape May and it instantly conjures up some amazing smells. Incense, essential oils, lotions — Good Scents is a no-brainer for these must-haves. But we love browsing the wall of sound at Good Scents — it’s one of the few places in the area where you can still purchase CDs. We popped in for a quick chat with the store’s music buyer Barb Sobel to see what’s trending there. “Jessie Baylin’s Little Spark” was the first thing out of Barb’s mouth, before we barely finished the ‘what-are-you-listening-to-now’ question. “It’s fantastic, and it’s really selling quite well.” What else is hot? “The new Norah Jones is doing well right now, too. It’s good — different. It’s kind of a departure for her.” We can’t help but remark on the variety going on here. It’s just one wall of the shop, but there’s vintage Louis Armstrong rubbing shoulders with new age darling Enya,

along with superstar of the moment, Adele. And they carry lots of local music, with fan favorites Bluebone and Mary Roth. “We just started carrying the Philadelphia Jug Band, and that’s doing well,” Barb says. “Jersey Sound by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons is a really big seller, too.” And we spotted the newly-released and wellreceived Let Them Talk, a blues CD from the actor Hugh Laurie, best-known as Gregory House in the television series House. (Okay, and we bought it – a pleasant surprise and worth a listen if you’re a blues fan.) We asked Barb what makes people still purchase a CD in an era of downloadable music, and she said “I think it’s exactly what you just did – it’s an impulse thing. People come in and look around and they’ll see Carol King’s Tapestry, for instance. This album is 41 years old, and we’ve been carrying it for over twenty years. But I know I will sell out of it every week this summer, as I do every summer. People just have an emotional reaction to it.”

PARTING SHOT It’s hard to believe, but Congress Hall reopened its doors 10 years ago on June 2.

And to mark the occasion a flagpole dedication will be held on the hotel’s Grand Lawn on Sunday, June 3 at 4pm. You will be treated to light refreshments and entertainment and you can also get a sneak preview of the hotel’s First Annual Sand Castle contest.

The Inside Scoop On City Hall

T

A user’s guide to Cape May City Council meetings... by Diane Stopyra

HERE was a little sadness in the air at last week’s city council meeting, as it was the last meeting of City Clerk, Diane Weldon, who looked lovely in a black and white dress and black sweater. Moving on looks good on you, Diane. Good luck! And now for the nitty gritty... 7:03 — Your reporter arrives, feeling pretty good, because she found several quarters for the meter at the bottom of her purse, where she thought there was none. 7:05 — Mayor Ed Mahaney, wearing a dark gray suit, calls the meeting to order. We say the Pledge of Allegiance. 7:06 — City Clerk Diane Weldon calls the roll. Councilmember Bill Murray is on vacation. Deputy Mayor Jack Wichterman, wearing an Easter egg green polo shirt, sandcolored jacket, and gray pants, is present, but the mayor says he wishes he were on vacation. Womp, womp. 7:07 — It’s time for an annual proclamation (but an important one, Mayor Mahaney says!) read on behalf of the Knights of Colum-

bus Council #6202 which is sponsored by Our Lady Star of the Sea Church. Over the past few years, the Knights have donated over $5 million “for the use and benefit” of those with special needs, it says. With the support of the city, the organization will dedicate May 26 and 27 for the collection of funds for this purpose (but Diane Weldon reads this as November 26 and 27… silly her!) Mayor Mahaney says we are lucky to have the co-chairman for this year’s fundraiser, John Tice, and the Grand Knight for the local chapter, George Catanese, in attendance this eve-

ning. At the mention of “Grand Knight” your reporter pictures a man in shining armor but — bummer — these two gentlemen are dressed in bright yellow KOC getups complete with collection containers. They look like detergent bottles — perhaps color-safe Tide — that have been cut in half. The mayor offers the men the proclamation (photo op!) and a personal check (undisclosed amount) to get the drive started. He says he remembers way-back-when when the drive began, and people would give quarters, dimes and nickels, “and occasionally a dollar.” (And then he walked to school up-hill both ways, no doubt.) Last year, the mayor says, the weather was very hot, which made it difficult for the “fellas and gals.” Everyone claps. 7:17 — The mayor makes a recommendation in the form of a motion that the resolution referring to a beach replenishment project from Third Avenue to Cape May Point be put on hold. They will discuss amongst themselves at a closed session because council “has some negotiating to do.” Your reporter feels com-

The Inside Scoop On City Hall ? From Page 45 pelled to tell the council she didn’t really want to hear about this resolution, anyway. 7:18 — Mayor Mahaney asks that City Manager Bruce MacLeod, wearing a beige jacket, pink shirt pink and a black striped tie, “highlight the highlights” of Ordinance 250. It deals with improvements to the water and sewer utility. One item that is earmarked for this year’s bond ordinance, Mr MacLeod says, is the purchase of an RO (that’s reverse osmosis, for those of you paying attention) membrane. It will replace the ones in the desalination plant. “The line item for this is $200,000,” he explains, but over the last several years, the city has set aside about $20,000 each year through the annual budget for this, so they only really need to bond for a balance of $50,000. The city also needs to purchase a new generator and a building enclosure that will keep wells number five and seven “on line” in the event of a power outage. (Your reporter pictures these wells checking their Facebook accounts.) “From a smaller perspective,” Mr MacLeod says, “we have also set aside little more than $100,000 for additional small power equipment and tools, a variety of pumps, sensors, and transmitters, and some additional computer software.”

Mayor Mahaney says this brings “the aggregate amount of the bond ordinance to $1,263,000,” and that it would authorize the issuance of $1,113,000 worth of bonds or notes.” He begins to ask for a motion to adopt, but before he can even get out the words, Deputy Mayor Jack Wichterman, says, “I’ll move!” Indeed you will, Mr Wichterman, indeed you will. 7:21 — Next up is ordinance 251, regarding beach utility improvement. The mayor asks City Manager Bruce MacLeod to highlight the two major points, but Mr MacLeod says he’s got FOUR things to discuss. 1) The acquisition of a new beach tractor for $130,000. 2) $50,000 for the improvements along the beachfront.

3) $45,000 for improvements to the seawall. 4) $75,000 for a new PA address system along the beachfront. The city anticipates receiving a grant that will cover 50% of the cost of this last point. The mayor says, “I would like to move to —” 7:22 — “I’ll move adoption,” says Deputy Mayor Jack Wichterman. SOMEBODY must have a hot date to get to tonight. 7:23 — Now it’s time to discuss Ordinance 252, “for the various improvements under the current fund budget appropriating aggregate amount of $2,080,000 with issuance of $1,420,000 worth of bonds.” This money will go toward continued improvements at city hall — including new skylights! — and a new phone system. And Rotary Park needs improvements, too, the firehouse needs new doors, and the City also needs to buy a new ambulance, a utility truck, and a generator. Your reporter needs to buy a new bikini, but we don’t even want to THINK about that. 7:24 — It’s time for Deputy Mayor Jack Wichterman to read resolutions. He says, “It’s a pretty easy night tonight.” Here’s what you need to know: Resolution 124 is for the approval of the

The Inside Scoop On City Hall ? From Page 46 Harborfest celebration, happening on June 16. This is especially exciting because the Kiwanis Club will be raffling off their car here. “Tickets are selling like hot cakes,” Wichterman says. “Too bad they’re not selling like raffle tickets,” the mayor responds. Womp, womp. Resolution 125 authorizes the annual fireworks display, done in conjunction with Congress Hall. Resolution 126 appoints the new active City Clerk, though Wichterman doesn’t say who this will be... read on! Resolution 127 has to do with authorizing four new Scott Air Packs for the fire department. (These are respiratory protection systems.) Resolution 128 is the one that was tabled. Resolution 130 has to do with a special item of revenue which was unanticipated when the budget was put together; it’s a small stipend in the amount of $14,573.63 from the DEP Clean Communities Program. Your reporter attempts to figure out how many hours she could could buy on a parking meter with this, but gives up before her brain explodes. Resolution 131 has to do with a change order. “We’re reducing the amount of the

water utility sewer contract by what I believe is $40,000,” says Mr Wichterman. “$42,000,” says Mayor Mahaney. (Excuuuuuuse me!) “That’s a nice job.” Resolution 132 has to do with the payment of bills. “That’s boiler plate,” Mr Wichterman says. Resolution 133 is “the same thing, but for Swain’s hardware.” 7:25 — It’s all gravy with the resolutions; they all get adopted. 7:26 — Minutes are received by council. 7:27 — Reports are received by council. 7:28 — It’s time for unfinished business, but the council doesn’t have any (how nice for them!) 7:29 — It’s time for new business. City Manager Bruce MacLeod says he has announcements regarding upcoming events. The first is the car race scheduled for May 19.

“People will be able to experience the growth and maturity of the automobile industry,” Mr MacLeod says. Your reporter pictures the maturity of an automobile, from its “infancy,” as he calls it, to its petulant teenage years. Then, Mr MacLeod says, there is “a Clean Communities conference or seminar, if you will (If we will what?) being held at Congress Hall.” It’s the ninth annual conference/seminar, he says. He seems to be having troubling deciding which it is. Either way, this organization rewards grants to municipalities which go toward making them a better, cleaner place to be. On May 25 at 10am is the ceremony earmarking the official grand opening of Convention Hall… although we’re not sure “earmarking” is the right word. There will be live music provided by Lower Cape May Regional Band and vocalist Pam Boyce, a city employee. (Your reporter thought Mr MacLeod said Pam Voice at first, but that would just be ridiculous.) On May 26 at 8pm, Mr MacLeod says, “we will have the Peter Nero and the Philly Pops.” Your reporter wonders when he became “the” Peter Nero. On Sunday May 27 at 8pm, a jazz quintet from the Temple University School of Music

The Atlantic Brass Band will also play that evening at Rotary Park. It’s the first concert of MAC’s (MidAtlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities) Music Festival, and it’s free of charge. 7:35 — Deputy Mayor Jack Wichterman says that “May 12, when we opened Convention Hall for the Lower Cape May Regional High School prom,” was a great success. “All I can say is job well done.” The Mayor then thanks Wichterman for all of HIS hard work, to which he responds, oh so humbly: “Whatever. I’m just a part of it.” Councilmember Deanna Fiocca — wearing her signature black — says she agrees. The mayor says, “It was a special moment for all of us.” 7:38 — The mayor says that on the Wednesday following Memorial Day at 7pm, the Lower Cape May Regional Pops band is performing a concert for our residents at Convention Hall. This, folks, is the show for people who can’t afford to pay $150 per, um, pop. 7:39 — The mayor makes the announcement that this is the City Clerk’s last meeting. After 18 years in public government, she is retiring. He says that the council has tried to get her to change her mind, but no such luck. He then thanks her for her loyalty and dedication. “You always put the people first,” he says. “I can go home then?” she jokes. 7:43 — Mayor Mahaney announces Diane’s replacement, Louise Cummiskey. “This has been a seamless tradition,” he says. “Louise has the same qualities of integrity and dedication as Diane.” 7:48 — It’s time for the public portion! Shirley Stiles from Victorian Towers — wearing baby blue pants, a very cute pair of white

clogs and a goldish jacket — says she wants to know why there isn’t a railing along the far side of Convention Hall, “above the greeneries.” The mayor says, “We’re going to address that.” There will be benches placed there that families have purchased in memory of loved ones. Ms Stiles would also like to know how the city will prevent people from walking through the hall’s landscaping. The mayor says that this area is important for aesthetic reasons, so that the building doesn’t look like “one large mountain of concrete,” and that once the plants grow more, it will be difficult to traipse willynilly through the area. (Willy-nilly is our word; not the mayor’s.) 7:53 — John Fleming of Washington Street thanks the council for their efforts on Convention Hall. Then he asks if the City Manager will explain what’s going on with the police protest outside of the building. “It was an expression of frustration that we have been negotiating their contract for going on 18 months,” Mr MacLeod says. “In this day and age, that’s not unusual.” We’re not sure what he means by “this day and age”, since the history books are full of stories of protests and expressions of frustrations. He assures Mr Fleming that the police officers have received full pension and benefits based on the previous year’s contract. 8:00 — The meeting adjourns, and your reporter chats with The Star and Wave reporter (It’s his birthday, and he’s 24), and with Shirley Stiles, who says she remembers dancing the night away at the Old Convention Hall. Until next time, stay cool, Cape May.

What Is The Future Of Energy?

E

Cape May Forum brings top speakers to the city on June 2-3

very time you pick up a newspaper or turn on the evening news, energy seems to dominate the conversation. What are the facts and what are the myths about energy supply and production? Is global warming “real”? Can the US truly become energy independent? Who is the top foreign supplier of US oil? Does solar power have promise? What is the future of energy — locally, regionally and globally? Cape May Forum seeks to explore these questions at their third-annual Cape May Forum: Running on Empty: The Future of Energy, which will be staged on Saturday, June 2 and Sunday, June 3. Nationally-renowned speakers and top notch panelists will come to town for lively and informative discussions, panels and dialogue. The keynote speaker is former head of the Central Intelligence Agency, R. James Woolsey. For years Woolsey has sounded the alarm for the United States on our dependence on fossil fuels. Woolsey’s areas

of expertise include alternative and renewable energy and energy security and he strongly believes that America needs to find a solution to its dependence on fossil fuels and foreign oil. He suggests the use of alternative biomass fuels such as cellulosic ethanol. And, as a great bookend to this weekend’s Race at the Cape event, Woolsey is a strong advocate of hybrid electric vehicles. This year’s Forum has been designed with flexibility in mind. Attendees can sign up for a single session, a single day, or the full two-day program. In addition the Forum is hosting a speaker reception and gala at the Cape May Winery. Tickets can be purchased at a discount with a weekend package. A diverse group of speakers drawn from government, business and non-profits will join Woolsey in a robust discussion. Sessions are designed to offer both thoughtful analysis and practical suggestions to discuss everything from energy-related investments to changes you can make at home, now. Former CIA boss R. James Woolsey will be the keynote speaker at Cape May Forum

Future Of Energy ? From Page 57 Saturday sessions will explore, “Perils and Potentials of Today’s Energy Landscape,” and “A Green Economy — Is it Achievable? Is it Sustainable?” which tackles the balance of a strong energy policy and sound environmental policy. Sunday continues the conversation with panel sessions, “Follow the Money — Taxes, Subsidies, Credits and Financing,” a look at the financial viability of the future of energy; and “Advice You Can Use Today.” A sampling of speakers includes the following. The full program and speaker roster is available at capemayforum.org. Jim Balaschak, Principal, Deloitte Consulting: The state of US energy, and where we are headed. Alisa Gravitz, Executive Director, Green America: Guidelines for America’s energy future. Chris Martenson, PhD, economic researcher and futurist: The 3 E’s — Energy, Economy and the Environment. Chris Hart, Offshore Wind Manager with the US Department of Energy. The impact of funding on the future of new

energy sources. Jerry Taylor, Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute. The issue of balancing sound economic policy and sound environmental policy. Each day’s programming includes ample time for Q &A and to keep the dialogue flowing, speakers and attendees gather round a table to share boxed lunches — as well as their viewpoints. At 7pm on Saturday the Cape May Forum’s annual Big Night Gala and speakers’ reception will feature food, music and dancing, with the chance to sample some of Cape May’s local wines, in a vineyard setting. The program speakers and panelists will all be on hand to continue the discussions, or just to have fun. Ticket prices for this year’s Future of Energy Forum range from $30 for one session, morning or afternoon; $75.00 for a two-day pass; to $150.00 for a two-day pass plus a ticket to the Saturday evening gala and speaker reception. The Movie Column

By Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival

A

s the season ramps up in Cape May, does anyone see the value of going someplace far, far away? What’s that? Too much to do? Absolutely. So why not sit in a dark theater and spend some time in a far away country at a hotel specifically for “beautiful people” like yourselves? Welcome to The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, a new film starring some big screen favorites in the golden years of their careers. A group of seniors living in England find one reason or another to head to a destination hotel, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel in India to be exact. The brochures boast luxury, opulence, a heaven on earth. Arriving at the destination is as unlikely a trip to heaven as one can imagine, capturing what I would think (having never been there) the streets of a major city in India. The crowds, the traffic, colors so vibrant yet buildings so antiquated and maybe a little dingy. Is this India? Don’t tell me if it misses the mark because I loved taking the trip anyway.

Check into The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel with Dame Judi Dench If the trip to the hotel was not what our English citizens expected, certainly the hotel itself was no better — okay, it was worse! Pigeons in the rooms, phones that don’t work, overgrown f lowers, and under-swept patios. However, none of the guests are coming from a perfect palace

of their own in England. Judi Dench plays a widower who discovers her husband of 40 years bankrupted them before he died. Tom Wilkinson is a retired judge in search of a former Indian lover, a man, who he feels he disgraced years ago. One grumpy guest desperately needs a hip replacement, and others in search of love, adventure, and something...well, something more than what home provided. Initially, the hotel seems ill-equipped to provide those things. In the end, it does exactly that for those willing to take the chance. This movie is beautifully shot and its story is well-told. Dench always delivers, so even with a limited range she f luctuates within it with perfect poise and execution. Wilkinson and the other cast perform extremely well. While I wanted to love this movie, I just liked it a lot. See it on the big screen for the remarkable cinematography. It could have taken a few more risks, but I still recommend it. With Memorial Day Weekend coming up, how else are you going to get away to an “exotic” destination in just a few hours!

Sleeping Around

Exit Zero tests the beds of Cape May’s hotels and inns. This week... The Billmae Cottage Where is it? The Billmae Cottage is located at 1015 Washington Street. What is it? It’s a home where dogs are not just welcome, but encouraged. And the people they bring are allowed, too. Who runs it? The Billmae is owned by dog-lovers Bob and Linda Steenrod. They live next door with their huskie mixes, Jameson and Guiness, who are as much fun to be around as their names suggest. How many rooms? There are four spacious suites, each with a full private bath, parlor, fully-equipped kitchen, individually controlled heat and air, and one or two bedrooms. What’s the vibe? It’s exceptionally clean (even for a cottage that isn’t dog friendly), and it’s welcoming. Even the dog we brought along — a thirteen-year-old German Shepherd/Scooby Doo mix named Rudy who is afraid of even the rain, not to mention other canines — was concerned only about getting his belly rubbed by the time we left yappy hour. Which brings us to... Amenities? First and foremost,

yappy hour. Linda and Bob provide the wine, wine coolers, and beer, as well as treats for the humans (we had Old Bay and mushroom toast points with melted cheese) and snacks for the dogs. The pups enjoy sniffing one another’s bottoms while the adults enjoy the lazy summer breezes and comfortable wicker furniture. Then, there’s the off-street parking, laundry room, animal and people-friendly outdoor shower, a plastic pool for cooling off your pup if he’d like to swim, bicycles, WiFi, and a collection of beach chairs and umbrellas. There’s also a collection

of board games, movies, and a take-it-ortrade-it library. We spent most of our evening alternating between the sitting room of our suite (where there was a comfortable couch for Rudy to hog), and the enclosed wooden deck outside. We were a little worried Rudy would pee out here, but Bob told us to relax. “Dog-friendly, remember?” he said. “He can’t hurt anything here.” What’s the bed like? Ours was a queen, complete with dog-bone themed sheets (“I’m always on the lookout,” Linda says), and a comfortable Sealy Posturepedic mattress. INSIDER TIP: Check out Linda’s collection of brochures describing dogfriendly things to do around town; some of them might surprise you (like the aviation museum, for instance). Or just ask Linda; she might just be the most knowledgable dog owner on the island. RANDOM FACT: Linda makes it a point to hug every guest before they go! each week, Exit Zero ambushes an unsuspecting and deserving citizen with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from one of our fine local florists. All you have to do is answer a question or two by our roving photographer, Gabi Urda. This week’s recipients are Patty Eckenroth and Ellie Scaroni, who were ambushed while waiting for a friend. Where are you from? We’re from Pleasant Gap and Lemong, Pennsylvania. Occupation: We are both retired from teaching. What are you doing in Cape May? We’re on vacation. We just finished a MAC trolley tour, and now we’re looking forward to having dinner at Cucina Rosa. When is the last time you got some flowers? We last got flowers on Mother’s Day. Thank you!

What’s Your Story?

Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here? Who are you and where are you from? My name is Dottie Rogers. I’m retired and I’m lucky enough to live right here in Cape May. And what were you doing when we interrupted you? I’m just here at Acme picking up a few things for my aunt. She’s 96 years old, and I take care of her. Are there any particular things on her must-have grocery shopping list? Yes. She always wants peanut butter and orange juice. I seem to buy both for her every week. She’s lucky to have you to take care of her. I usually take her flowers, too. And she likes to take car rides. She’s not from around here originally, and can’t get over all these trees we have at the shore. The theme of this week’s issue is “music.” Are you a big music fan? It’s so funny that you asked me that! Yes. I’m in a bell choir at my church, and I was just thinking that I have to get to rehearsal today at 4:oo! Interview by Kate Chadwick PHOTOGRAPH by Gabi Urda

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady My son is a musical genius. I’m not bragging, but there it is. He is only six, but he can repeat the lyrics to any song after hearing it only a couple of times, he sings (on key!) along to the commercial jingles, he has a little toy keyboard that he’s always using to make up songs – I could go on and on. Do I need to move him to Los Angeles or New York to get him into show business? I don’t want to turn into one of those awful stage moms. – Ordinary Mom, Extraordinary Son Dear Extraordinary First, the Answer Lady would like to thank you for not going on and on — we do have space restrictions here at Exit Zero. And while the Answer Lady thinks it is important for any budding star or starlet to have the support of dear old Mom (as opposed

to the scratching and clawing one’s way to the top that makes for so many Hollywood stories), it is easy to get carried away when it comes to the talents of our little darlings. It is also important to do two things: be realistic, and educate them. Call Mr. J’s Music Shop on Townbank Road in North Cape May. They offer guitar, voice, piano, violin and music theory lessons, from beginner to advanced, so if your little fledging has American Idol talent, they’ll dig it up and nurture it.

Dear Busy Fret not! While the beach is an excellent, built-in diversion for kids (of any age), there are plenty of activities and camps to occupy Cape May kids. Go to the city’s capemayrecreation.org to check their schedule of activities and camps being offered this summer, which include things like swimming lessons and Stockton Summer Playhouse Children’s Theater shows. Speaking of budding thespians, Cape May Stage has a Discovery Summer Theatre Camp for kids ages 9-16, and East Lynne Theater is offering their sixth annual Student Theater Workshops. Both local riding stables, Hidden Valley and Sea Horse Farm, offer equestrian camps for ages 5 and up. With a little research, you will find the perfect activity for your kids right in your own back yard (without actually literally having them in your own back yard).

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

adore music, and have it playing in the D’Catur Mansion every minute of the day and night. Obviously, as is expected of a gentleman, I have a string quartet playing in the Conservatoire de Music, and a pianist in the Drawing Room who covers a gamut of tunes from Mozart to the more popular ditties of that funny little Elton John chap. I actually had Elton as a house guest for some months, and he was a total delight, but insisted on playing “Candle in the Wind” a dozen times a day, tailored cleverly to any occasion that had an ounce of drama in it. When the cat passed away, we were all moved to tears with his haunting little voice shrilling “Goodbye Fluffikins” (the late Mrs D’Catur insisted on naming him that to offset his vicious nature – the beast was a purebred Scottish Wildcat and filled with spitting rage and meanness). A few weeks later, when I dropped a nearly full magnum of champagne, I heard “Goodbye Moet Chandon” echoing around the halls, which was whimsical, if odd. But not long after, when I had served up a delicious Apple Pie

to the family and guests, Elton trundled off and started to sing “Goodbye Granny Smith,” which was just plain silly. This continued until I could bear no more, and chased him off the premises with a walking cane, as he shrieked in perfect tune, “Goodby Mr D’Catur.” I am no stranger to “modern music” and can take pride in the fact that I introduced both The Rolling Stones and The Beatles to the world. Of course, they were initially one band, called The Rolling Beatles, but cre-

ative differences arose one night between John Lennon and Mick Jagger in the Brown Room. Order and good manners were restored, but not until David Bowie received a black eye and Jimi Hendrix smashed a guitar over the head of Don Henley. I also have the Mansion outfitted with the best stereo system money can buy, and at the press of a button two speakers the size of minivans rise smoothly from the East and West Wing roofs, and a 100-foot-diameter subwoofer pops up through the lawn. The last time I activated the system, after a cocktail or three at Martini Beach, and played “99 Red Balloons,” windows were smashed for 30 miles and Cape May was vibrated a full inch south from the reverberation. Before I turned it off, though, I did witness a group of carousing Wildwooders stagger towards the source, dancing manically. From curiosity I deactivated the Claymore mines around the rose garden and let them in, whereupon they whirled and spun madly before exploding into a fine red mist. This discovery will come in handy should we ever be invaded, I am sure.

SING LIKE A STAR! Cape May Hypnotics are pleased to announce a breakthrough in audio/visual learning that will have you singing like one of the legends. Simply purchase the artiste tape of your choice, tape your eyes open in an easy chair facing the TV and set the cassette to play on repeat all night. After just one week we 100 per cent guarantee you will sing better than* your idol.

Call (609) 770-8479 and ask for Jimmi, Elvis, Janis, Cobain or Tupac! JUST $9.9 * Note, you will sing better 9 than the actual physical singer does now, in 2012. We warn against digging their remains up to test this, however.

Activity Of The Week

B

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Cape May Music Festival

idding is open! Support the Cape May Music Festival by joining the online fundraising auction at biddingforgood.com. On May 28, the 23rd Season of the Cape May Music Festival begins two weeks of “sweet sounds by the sea.” Presented by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts (MAC) and PNC Bank, the festival runs to June 14, offering a “feast for every musical taste,” from old favorites to new works, and fun extras like “Bach’s Lunches” at the Carriage House Tearoom. The festival will also feature a June 3 tribute to George Mesterhazy, Cape May’s favorite jazz pianist, who passed away suddenly in April. Venues all over town are involved, with free events at Rotary Bandstand, intimate performances at local churches, and larger shows at Convention Hall. Only 5% of the budget is covered by ticket income. Support the festival and treat yourself to something special by participating in MAC’s online auction. Go to the BiddingForGood website and search “Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts,” browse through the available items

A tribute to the late George Mesterhazy is part of the 23rd Annual Cape May Music Festival and place your bid. There’s even a “How to Bid” button if you need instructions. Online auctions make it easy to buy great items in support of a great cause. You can sit at your desk on your lunch hour, or at the kitchen counter with a glass of wine, and plan your bidding strategy. Consider how much a private channeling session with Craig McM-

anus is worth to you, or a signed New Jersey Devils hockey puck. How charming would that Royal Doulton figurine look on your fireplace? Measure for your area rug from Avalon Tile or artwork from Gallery D’May. With an online auction, you have the leisure to write your guest list for the Gourmet Dinner at the 2010 Show House, the Fried Chicken Lover’s Delight at the Chalfonte, or Girls’ Night Out from Cotton Company or Lace Silhouettes — with VIP gift bags. Plan a romantic getaway and place your bid on the Fairthorne Inn package. How about a weekend at the Beachcomber Campground, or the Bedford Inn? Or consider the message you’d send on your Aerial Greeting Card from Paramount Air Service. Check the website often for new items, and to see how your bids are holding up. The auction closes on May 28, just as the music festival gets started. For information on festival tickets, call 609-884-5404 or visit the MAC website at capemaymac.org. Support the Cape May Music Festival by bidding for good! Next week: The Kiwanis Annual Yard Sale

In those 2 years, he mastered the “scissor over comb” technique as well as sharpened his clippering skills. Rick also enjoys blending men’s hair with Redkin camo color. ALL STAR softball and field hockey player Becca Holden reached her goal of recording 100 hits in her softball career. Although she achieved this milestone on the diamond, the Lower Cape May Regional senior is placing her focus on field hockey for her intercollegiate career. Holden received a full athletic scholarship to the University of Virginia for field hockey, and six years of hard work has clearly paid off for the goalkeeper. Receiving a Division I scholarship has been a goal for Holden since the eighth grade. Holden plans a dual major in English and education, and has also set her sights on the US Olympic field hockey team. “I definitely have Olympic national team dreams,” said Holden. With the support of her proud parents Sharon and Michael of Fishing Creek, along with siblings Amber, Michael and Gregory, Holden plans to continue to work hard both on and off the athletic field, with the hopes that one day her dreams of success in athletics —and in life — will become a reality. by Alice Bur/photograph by Josh Pennington

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

«

ciroc is an enthusiastic Pit Bull, approximately 18 months old. She’s extremely active but submissive, and needs an owner to be patient and give her consistent training, discipline and exercise. Ciroc knows some basic commands, so could easily learn more. She is recommended for a single person or family with children over age ten, and not other pets. Let Ciroc become a joy in your life. The adoption fee is $95.

«

PENNY is waiting for someone to take her to her forever home. She used to live with other dogs, so she gets along with others. She’s a sweet but nervous girl, and gets anxious when touched, but is learning to love — she just needs time to get to know you. Penny knows some commands. Because she is nervous she would be best in a home with older kids, if any, and she doesn’t do well with cats. The adoption fee is $95.

«

BUCKY is a 2-year-old, who was found wandering the streets and brought to the shelter by a good samaritan, but his owner never claimed him. He is shy at first, and he needs training but is willing to learn. He does well with other dogs but not cats, and should go to a home with no children as he is very exhuberant and could knock them over. Otherwise he is a really good boy who just needs a second chance. The adoption fee is $95.

emorial Day weekend is bearing down upon us! The summer season is just starting, but Cape May Stage’s season has already been in full swing for a few weeks. If you haven’t been to the Robert Shackleton Playhouse yet, get there soon! Uncle Jacques’ Symphony is a hit with audience members, and Cape May Stage has several ways for you to see this supreme dose of theatre at a reduced price. This Sunday, May 27th, is our Half-Price Senior Matinee. For seniors 62 and over, tickets are only $15 – that’s 50% off the regular senior price of $30. Tickets go quickly for these matinees, so get yours soon. Not quite yet a senior? That’s okay — Cape May Stage has specials for everyone. Make it a memorable night out with one of our Dinner and a Show packages! We have deals with nine of Cape May’s renowned eateries: whether a $25 ticket with every entrée, or a low-priced prix-fixe dinner, we have something for every wallet and palette. We also have subscriptions for our acclaimed Broadway Series: see such stars as Anthony Rapp, Christine Ebersole, and Michael Tucker and Jill Eikenberry. It’s hard to believe that we’re less than a month away from mounting God of Carnage! This farcical comedy has been delighting American audiences since its Tony-winning Broadway run in 2009. Hilarity ensues when two couples — Manhattan yuppies versus crunchy liberals — meet to discuss their middle school sons’ recent altercation. The juvenile behavior isn’t relegated to the children as the evening’s pleasantries slowly crumble into insanity. Visit capemaystage.org or call 884-1341 for details. The season has only just begun!

Bird Droppings

T

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

his article is about Killdeer. No, this isn’t about hunting. Yes, the word should be capitalized. It’s the name of a bird and all bird names are capitalized, according to the A.O.U. Webster thinks differently about this matter...but what do a bunch of word nerds know about birds? Anyway, so now you know that a Killdeer is a bird and now you want to know how it got such a curious name. No. It doesn’t prey on ungulates (animals with hooves). The bird is a plover, a shorebird. It feeds primarily on insects and invertebrates (things with no backbone). Killdeer are also somewhat reluctant shorebirds. They are more commonly found in open, dry, often sparsely vegetated fields. Field is used loosely. This landlubber among shorebirds also frequent parking lots, gravel driveways, and bare plowed ground. It is with great reluctance that the birds get their feet wet. Back to the name. Killdeer are called

killdeer because that’s what they say. Loudly. The classic vocalization of this robin-sized plover is: Kill-dee...kill-dee... kill-dee. It makes this call most commonly when it is excited. Like when you are about to mindlessly tread upon its nest. Ground nesters, Killdeer use their call to distract potential predators. They use a f luttering

display to draw predators away from their nests. Maybe you’ve heard about it —the proverbial “broken wing act.” Here’s another anomaly. The term “nest” hardly applies to plovers, too. The birds lay their four eggs in a shallow depression on the ground. A “scrape” as it is called. The eggs are very well camouf laged. Kind of pale dirt color, with dark specks. Drop them in a clam shell parking lot and they just about disappear. In a few short weeks, the eggs hatch and the young leave the scrape in a matter of hours. They are still tended by adults. They are just highly mobile and highly precocial. They can feed themselves. They can run from danger. They are doing this right now, as I write this line, in early May. In fact, the first ambulatory Killdeer chicks I encountered this year were running around in late April. This is by far the earliest I’ve ever seen young Killdeer and they weren’t even in the puff balls-on-legs stage of their development. The birds were

Bird Droppings ? From Page 119 well feathered. About half-grown, near as I could tell. On top of this, they numbered, even at this late stage of their development, four. It is very common for one or more Killdeer to fall prey to some predator or another. That this pair of adults managed to get four young so close to f ledging is quite an achievement. So...lets say you want to see a Killdeer. In Cape May that’s easily done. The most fertile Killdeer hunting habitat around is The Nature Conservancy’s South Cape May Meadows on Sunset Boulevard. You walk down the center road. Listen for the sound of a bird castigating you with a loud, two note cry. Search the dry edge of the ponds. If the bird is not there, look up. Adults will often vocalize while they f ly. Sometimes this is to attract a mate. Sometimes it is to distract you. Killdeer. An interesting bird boasting a few anomalies. That’s why it rates a column and other birds don’t. If you want to be sure you are seeing or hearing the right bird, head over to the Cape May Bird Observatory - THE place

The Killdeer, who nests on the ground, will let you know when you get too close — loudly for all your nature needs. You can pick up a free birding map, checklist and schedule of our daily walks, and you can talk to our staff about optics, field guides, walks, and anything else you might need - or don’t know you need yet! CMBO is located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point (609.884.2736), and is open DAILY from 9:30am to 4:30pm. Our staff are always available to help with any questions. While you are there, scan the bookshelves for some bargains in the used and vintage books section, look at some of

the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise including a terrific lithograph done just for the Cape May Bird Observatory, or just browse around. Take a look at the sighting sheets to check what’s being seen out in the field, check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars. If it’s nice, sit outside on our garden benches and enjoy the birds at the feeders and the view of Lake Lily. If you can’t make it in person, you can also visit us online www.BirdCapeMay.org – where birding Cape May is only a click away! Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for the New York Times. You can join Pete for his Monday morning walk at the South Cape May Meadows. Just meet by 7:30 am in The Nature Conservancy parking lot on Sunset Boulevard. Loaner binoculars are available at no cost; the walk is $6 for CMBO or NJ Audubon members; $10 for non-members. Stella Dixon’s take on romance on Old Cape Island

H

AVE you noticed that everyone is talking in therapyspeak these days? I watched an old episode of The Bachelor the other day (don’t judge me) and every contestant was going on about her “walls.” Her “guard.” The trouble she has letting people “in.” (That’s a tough sell when you’ve opted to find love via a nationally-televised elimination contest, but still.) My girlfriends are the same way. “Sure, I like him,” they tell me about some guy they met at Carney’s or the Ugly Mug, “but I’m afraid of letting down my guard.” We’re all just fortresses of emotionality, it seems (How’s that for therapy-speak?). Or else, having “walls” is just very in vogue right now. It’s not that I don’t get it. I do. Heartbreak is a bitch, and no one wants to go through that twice. Sometimes, it’s crippling. You get dumped, and you swear, if someone were to rip open your chest, they’d find the disintegrated arteries and collapsed chambers

of what used to be an organ. It’s not sadness you feel. It’s not loss. It’s physical pain. And then there’s the kind of heartbreak that makes you feel like you do after eating deli mustard that expired in 2009. You know this won’t kill you, but it will be a while before you pick up another jar without checking the label. So, no, we can’t throw caution to the wind. When it comes to love, we go back for more, but we’re wary when we do. All this

talk about “walls” is understandable. The thing is, I have no such thing. It doesn’t matter how many sociopaths I’ve been involved with (okay, only one, but he was a doozy), or how many liars I’ve dated (quite a few), I have no trouble letting people “in.” I don’t wear my heart on my sleeve; I keep it in my hand, so that it’s easier to hand off. I’d love some heavily guarded walls, because I fall dangerously fast and hard. And I’m more than happy to tell you — whoever you are — how I’m feeling at any given moment about love. I cried over my avocado toast the other day at breakfast with a colleague, because I was feeling lonely and I didn’t think he’d mind if I changed the subject from deadline pressure to relationship intimacy. If no one will listen, I tell Rudy. (He nudges his wet nose under my arm to let me know he agrees about the sociopath.) My fortress of emotionality is more like an ungaurded fort, with an open-door policy. Could this be the reason I’m still single? I don’t know. But I’d be willing to have a heart-toheart about it.
