Subscriber Of The Week
Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Patricia Faulkner of Del Haven. (Yes, locals — you can subscribe and have EZ delivered right to your door each week!) How long have you been in Cape May? I’ve been visiting here for 22 years, and moved here permanently seven years ago. Favorite thing about Cape May? That has to be having direct access to the beach right from work. Least favorite thing? The obstacles getting around this time of year — people on bikes talking on their phones, people driving around that aren’t familiar with the area. Favorite restaurants? Lucky Bones for casual dining, and Washington Inn for dress-up dining. Favorite place to stay? My house, although pretty much any bed and breakfast in town will do. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? I would make one week of the summer for locals only. Favorite thing about Exit Zero? I love all the pictures, and the Dating Column and Answer Lady are very entertaining. Least favorite thing about Exit Zero? I don’t have one. What’s your T-shirt size? A large for my boyfriend, Chris Kolody.
Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Kate Chadwick. If you think you know what establishment this is, you could win a gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter at facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!
Quotes Of The Week
“Sometimes they’re tiny, sometimes they’re tall, but friends are the berry best people of all.” — Strawberry Shortcake “Where there’s smoke, there’s usually strawberry Jello.” — JD Salinger “Let me take you down, ‘cause I’m going to Strawberry Fields.” — John Lennon
Random Factoid
strawberries are high in ellagic acid, an antioxidant that acts as a scavenger to help make potential cancer-causing chemicals inactive. Ellagic Acid reduces the genetic damage caused by carcinogens like tobacco smoke and air pollution. Strawberries also contain cholesterol-lowering antioxidants.
Cocktail Recipe Of The Week... The Strawberry/Banana Mojito At Lucky Bones WE RECENTLY published the Essential Lucky Bones Cookbook, featuring hundreds of recipes from one of Cape May’s most popular restaurants. Included in the book are cocktail recipes and, even though the strawberry mojito is not in the book, it’s still a popular drink there, and since this is the Strawberry Issue, here it is... As for the book, it is available for sale from the Exit Zero Store and Gallery, Lucky Bones, the Washington Inn, Love the Cook.

Local artists Don Merwin and Janet McShain share their views of the Cape May harbor in the new exhibit “Sails & Sterns” at the Harbor Gallery at the Nature Center. The exhibit will run for the month of June, and the public is invited to a “meet the artist” reception on Friday, June 1 at 6pm. All of the artwork is for sale, with a portion of the proceeds goes to support the Nature Center, and light refreshments will be served. Award winning photographer Don Merwin has been taking photos for most of his life. Although he has traveled throughout the US, it is Cape May that he now calls home. The Cape May Harbor and its fishing boats are often an inspiration to Merwin. Watercolor artist, Janet McShain, comes from a family of painters and usually has a brush in hand. A plein air painter, she says she likes to feel the wind and the weather, and notes that the outdoors is her canvas. The Harbor Gallery is located at the Nature Center of Cape May at 1600 Delaware Avenue in Cape May. For more information on the exhibit, please call (609) 884-2736.

Talk Of The Town
Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
The Case Against Mahaney Three Cape May residents have filed an ethics complaint with the state’s Department of Community Affairs against Mayor Ed Mahaney for failing to disclose conflicting personal interests while pushing through $120,000 worth of city contracts with Temple University and affiliates over the past three years. The residents, Matthew Glenn, Charlie Hendricks and Jim Testa, charge that Mahaney, who holds several academic degrees from Temple and is listed on its “Honor Roll of Donors,” violated the state’s Local Government Ethics Law by having the contracts adopted without disclosing he was involved in discussions for personal naming rights over a Temple sports facility at the same time. The complaint came after we published a letter in this column four weeks ago which was sent by a Temple employee to the mayor in August, 2009. In the letter, Temple’s Associate Athletics Director of Development writes, “I would like you to consider how a $1m commitment named in your parents’ memory may be funded via a combination of your property/home value, a life insurance policy death benefit, and a cash gift over the next five years. Further, I ask to gauge your interest in this gift being used to fund renovations to our Olympic sports complex (currently Geasey Field) in exchange for the facility’s re-naming for your parents.” The cash portion of the gift being solicited by Temple from Mahaney was $100,000. The first of the three disputed city contracts was passed in August 2009 — it paid Temple’s School of Tourism and Hospitality Management $53,000. A second in October
2009 paid Temple’s School of Environmental Design $48,500. The third, approved in March this year, awarded a $18,500 contract to a Philadelphia-based landscape architectural firm owned by a Temple faculty member who participated in the second contract. Each contract was approved on an accelerated basis with no competitive bidding process, and, in each case, Mahaney appears to have been centrally involved in negotiating the contracts, and signed them on behalf of the city. Minutes of the council meetings obtained by the complainants confirm that the mayor never disclosed his solicitation by Temple. “We think Mayor Mahaney’s lack of candor in this matter falls far short of the standards required of local government officers under the Ethics Law and has imperiled public confidence in Cape May’s local government,” says Jim Testa. “The donations and naming rights correspondence at the very least created a strong appearance of a conflict of interest between the mayor’s duties as a city official and his apparent need to provide enough value to Temple to obtain the naming rights. “Since the city and Cape May County have no ethics boards, we have asked the Local Finance Board under the Department of Community Affairs to investigate and seek the prescribed penalties to help restore faith in ethical government in Cape May,” he says. Violations of the ethics law can lead to dismissal of appointed officials and fines for elected ones. The three residents maintain the fact that the mayor failed to disclose his conflicting personal interests and had a central role
in approving the three contracts also contributed to their lax administration by officials and damage to the city. “For example, even though it was fully paid in advance, Temple missed by almost 15 months the original deadline under the 2009 tourism contract to deliver a final long-range plan,” the residents say in a statement, “and appears to have been excused for that breach without any penalty. As a result, the city lost advance knowledge and flexibility to implement any value contained in the plan that it should have had long before the opening of Convention Hall in May 2012. “Likewise, the environmental design contract, hurried into place shortly after the Temple solicitation letter, appears to have had questionable work product produced by unlicensed students, jeopardizing its value for professional planning purposes. Finally, the 2012 landscaping design contract for Convention Hall awarded to the out-of-state firm owned by a Temple faculty member who contributed services to the 2009 contract has all the earmarks of a payback sweetheart arrangement. The final charge was almost 25% more than the original quote for the work and, if the contract had been bid publicly, many in the community believe that comparable work could have been supplied by local contractors for lower prices and at considerable more value by including, instead of separating out, the labor and materials in a combined landscaping package.” Testa adds, “Unfortunately, in the current Cape May political environment, neither the city council nor city manager have

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 been willing to confront the mayor over these contracts, so, essentially, there have been no guardians protecting the public interest.” The mayor was not available for comment as we went to press on Monday. Our comment? We believe the complaint is an appropriate response to what we believe is a bad situation in City Hall. The mayor is running the show, in violation of the form of government that is supposed to operate in Cape May, where the City Manager is the chief executive. And he is doing so in a way that runs entirely contrary to his pre-election vow of ensuring transparency in local government.
The Police, Press And Pops NATURALLY, we wanted to cover the Peter Nero and the Philly Pops concert last Saturday. So, a couple of weeks ago we asked the city’s Director of Marketing Mike Whipple if we could have press passes for a writer and photographer. At the time he told us he was too busy to deal with
it until after Memorial Day, which would make things a little tricky since the concert was two days before Memorial Day. We followed up with Mike a week ago and he wrote back an email saying he would have to check on the procedure — which, in Cape May, is another way of saying he’ll have to go ask the mayor. He later wrote back saying, “There will not be an opportunity for photography during the closed rehearsal or during the performance. We do not plan to issue press passes for the building on Saturday.” This is different than what Jack Fichter, reporter for the Herald, was told by Whipple’s assistant, Michael Chait — which was to just show up around 7:30pm and expect access. And it’s different than what Christopher South, reporter for The Cape May Star and Wave, told us he’d heard from the city — that reporters would be granted access for a two-song span. Who’s on first here, guys? We considered sending a writer and instructing them to simply force their way in, because to deny the press access to an event like this in a public building brings
up thoughts of the way things used to operate in, say, the Soviet Union, and still do in North Korea. But then we decided that causing a scene to make a point about press freedom and democracy on a night when people ponied up $150 would be unfortunate. So we only sent our photographer Aleksey Moryakov with instructions to take photos only of people entering the building. But he, along with Messrs Fichter and South, were granted access... just not exactly welcomed. “The mayor had a disgusted look on his face,” Fichter told us. “I wanted to extend my hand and say congratulations on the building, but he simply looked at me and said, ‘You people stand over there.’” “Over there” was a space against the far wall with no view of Peter Nero’s piano. “Mike Whipple eventually had the sense to lead us to the top of the bleachers, where we could see the waves breaking and get great photos,” Fichter said. “There, we weren’t blocking anyone’s view.” But three songs in, Whipple came back up the aluminum

Page 16 Talk Of The Town ? From Page 14 bleachers to inform the press their time was up. There is some disagreement as to the way this happened. Fichter told us there were four police officers waiting at the bottom of the stairs to escort them out of the building. “And not just to the lobby,” he says. “They wanted to make sure we exited. It was like being arrested and pulled from the show. Why the police? It’s not like we would have held on to our chairs and refused to go.” South, on the other hand, told us he didn’t feel this way, and that one officer had simply held the door for them as they went, an impression in line with that of Chief of Police Diane Sorentino. “No one was escorted out,” she tells us. “What we’re guilty of is holding open the door.” But what we’re more concerned with is why members of the press would have been asked to leave at all. “I’ve been shooting pictures for a decade,” Fichter says. “Concerts in Wildwood, the old convention hall, Atlantic City, and this has never happened. Leaving after a few songs is not something that’s enforced.” Fichter, himself a musician, would have
Thursday, May 31, 2012 been happy to write a favorable review of the concert, which he says, was wonderful. “The acoustics and the band were great,” he said, “but I’ll never take another picture in that building.” Which sounds to us like another missed marketing opportunity on the part of the city. And marketing is not something they can afford to lose, especially after a show that cost approximately $110,000 according to the last estimate we heard from the mayor. We haven’t heard how many tickets were sold, but last time we checked the city’s website, 169 went unsold, which is a big disappointment to us all, especially the mayor, who declined the offer of six free two-page ads in Exit Zero because, “We don’t need it,” said the mayor, who guaranteed, at a recent council meeting, that the concert would sell out. The city placed ads in several publications and, we’re told, TV channels, though we have yet to confirm that. In the end, we believe that a concert costing $150 was a wholly inappropriate way to open a community building. The city will probably end up eating close to $50,000 on this. For probably half of that amount, they could have secured the services of a perfectly respectable band and made the concert a free one.
Welcome Additions HERE’S something we love to see: cool young people who are smart, talented, and doing good things for Cape May. We spent the week talking with two of them — women who are doing wonders for Cape May’s cuisine-by-cart scene. The first is 26-year-old Brooke Dodds, who grew up wanting to “move away” from Cape May. And she did, after graduating from Lower Township High School, spending a few winters snowboarding in Vermont. “But sometimes it takes leaving to realize how much you appreciate the place you’re from,” she told us over Memorial Day weekend, when we popped in to see her after her shift cooking behind the line at George’s Place. “This town is just beautiful.” Beautiful, but seriously lacking in empanadas (those “hot-pocket like” creations that are stuffed with sweet or savory ingredients and served by street vendors across South America). Or at least, this town used to be lacking. Brooke was so inspired by a small empanada business run by an Argentinean woman she met in Vermont that she decided to begin her own in Cape

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 16 May. “I just fell in love with them,” she said. Brooke began experimenting with different dough and fillings, showcasing the final product at her son’s second birthday in June of 2010. The empanadas were so well-received that she signed up for the West Cape May Farmers Market. Now, she’s going into her third season. “I never expected it to turn into this,” she said. “People are excited; they call asking for them.” We know what she means. We’ve heard whispers in town about how good Brooke’s empanadas are, and George’s server Nico stopped by our table to fill us in. “The blackberry crème is my favorite,” he said. “I once ate 40 of them in a day and a half.” Really? “Really,” Nico assured us. “Forty.” Brooke’s been honing her skills in the kitchen for quite some time. She learned to cook at Gecko’s restaurant at the age of 13, and she’s been hooked ever since. “It’s a tough job,” she said. “I once had an egg thrown at my head — that’s the kind of thing that happens in a commercial kitchen — but I love the challenge of it.” Now, she cooks at George’s five nights a week, and
waitresses there three or four mornings. In her free time, she takes her son Connor — who is also her taste-tester — to the arcade on the promenade, thinks of ways to improve her business (look for gluten-free options in the future), and experiments with new fillings (she’s made everything from lobster, shrimp, and mashed potato, to turkey chili, to sweet corn succotash, to s’more, to name just a few). And she prides herself on using local ingredients. “They just taste better,” Brooke says. “I like to support the local economy, and I just like the vibe of it. I grew up picking strawberries from a field next door.” Look for Brooke at the West Cape May Strawberry Festival (this Saturday!), the farmers market, the Lima Bean Festival, and Harborfest. She sells vegan, vegetarian, meat-filled, and sweet empanadas at each event. “I bake them,” she said, “and I use canola oil instead of lard, so they’re a little bit healthier than your traditional empanada.” Visit empmamas.com. And then there’s Gina Peterson, the second cool young local we spoke with this week. Apparently, it takes a specific kind of person to launch a food cart start-up around here — a waitress/mother/snowboarder. Like Brooke, 30-year-old Gina
gleaned inspiration from a snowy wintertime retreat, this time in Colorado. “I graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in 2001,” she told us. “And I don’t know if my desire to open a creperie came from my time in school, or from the Brooklyn pastry shop where I worked while I was student. But it became a dream. And in 2005, while in Colorado, I saw a mobile crepe cart on the base of one of the mountains. This was my vision, and for the first time, I saw that it really can be done.” Now, Gina is preparing to launch her own mobile creperie — Crespella Gourmet — at the Strawberry Festival on Saturday. She’s spent the last year honing her recipes — like homemade cream cheese and vegetable, wild mushroom and Swiss cheese, Jersey asparagus with bacon and goat cheese, and banana nutella, among plenty of others — and she’s tasted more than 100 different crepes in the process. “My husband asks what’s for dinner,” she laughed, “and I say, ‘What do you think?’” Between raising her two-year-old baby girl, Keira, selling real estate at DeSatnick’s Real Estate and waitressing and bartending at The Ebbitt Room, Gina’s also found

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 18
Check out the Black Fig Chocolate Bar from Dick Taylor; not only is the candy handmade — after roasting the cacao beans himself in a turn-of-the-century roaster — but the wrapper is designed by the artisan, too, and printed on handpressed paper. Try the outrageously delicious Bequet Caramels, hand-crafted in small batches by four women in Montana. Or try a Bryne and Carlson bars, via a husband and wife team from New Hampshire, whose work is as stunning to look at as it is to eat — eye candy, if you will. And we DID spot a strawberry confection after all. Made by Divine Chocolates, it was a White Chocolate with Strawberries candy bar and it was absolutely sublime. The best part is that Divine’s is a fair trade certified company which is owned in part by the farmers in Ghana who harvest the beans. Those are some extra calories you can feel really good about.
the time to tend a garden, where she’s growing the vegetables and fruit she needs for her recipes. (We’re most excited about the blackberry preserves she’ll use for a blackberry cheesecake crepe, made with her homemade cream cheese.) Is she worried about juggling everything she’s got going on? “We’re going to make it work,” Gina said. “I’m excited to fulfill this passion. My grandmother always said, ‘You can do anything you put your mind to.” Look for Gina at this Saturday’s Strawberry Festival, at the farmers market on Tuesdays, at the Ferry Fresh market on Saturdays, and — coming soon — at the General Store in Cape May Point. Oh, and she’ll be at the ultra-cool Exit Zero party happening on June 7, too. Gina is also available for catering — think baby shower, bridal shower, private party.
of us, it happens to be “chocolate.” And maybe “chocolate” comes to mind for us way too often, but fortunately, there is a new shop in town catering to those of us for whom chocolate is a way of life. We popped in to Louisa’s Chocolate Bar (conveniently located next to Happy Baby, which is next to Louisa’s) on Jackson Street to have a look around. Okay, maybe we popped in twice in three days, but who’s counting? We were immediately struck by the décor, of the place — cheery yet subdued. The walls are painted a soft blue, with two bronzes sconces from the 1940’s anchoring opposite walls — all the better to showcase the beautifully wrapped wares. This is not grabbing-a-candy-bar-at-Wawa; this is more a chocolate selection experience, with handmade, artisan bars from all over the place. Each of the tiny brands Louisa’s carries has its own story — just ask any of the friendly and informative staff members.

The Movie Column
I
By Mary Sims, Cape May Film Society Member
’m really kind of a scaredy-cat. I almost never go to any movies but romantic comedies or dramas (very light dramas!). And horror movies, no way! I’m not even a big fan of Edgar Allan Poe. Sure, I’ve visited his house in Philadelphia and read The Raven, but I’ve never read any of his other works. They’re too gory. So why would I go see a new movie based on the life and works of Poe? Simple. John Cusack! The Raven is a fictionalized account of the life and work of Poe. In the story, Poe, played by Cusack, must help police stop a serial killer who is using the writer’s plots and storylines as a method for killing. The sets and costumes are extremely well done, very accurate and as dark as you’d imagine they’d be to bring this macabre author to life. There were three scenes so bloody they kept me up for days. Still, the movie is worth catching. Why? Cusack. Did Cusack portray Poe as you might imagine him? Probably not. Cusack is too charming and cynical and cute, of course — he’s Cusack! But that’s probably not
John Cusack as Edgar Allan Poe is the best reason to see The Raven, says Mary Sims who Poe was. And some of his character’s “brilliant deductions” were so extreme as to be farfetched (as were some of the plot’s twists and turns). So why see the movie? Do I need to say it again? In addition to Cusack, the premise of the movie is compelling and interest-
ing. The story touches on familiar folklore (history?) surrounding Poe, such as his fear of being buried alive and how he was not as well-known during his lifetime as after his death. In one scene, he enters a bar and says he’ll buy a drink for the first person who can finish the following line of poetry, “quoth the raven…” and one patron with a puzzled look utters “… nevermore?” His death as portrayed in the film is also historical. Poe was found dead on a park bench in Baltimore; thefilm explores a storyline that gets him there. So aside from the gory scenes, the movie is still worth seeing for historical and literary reasons — and because of John Cusack. Yes, I said it again. Cape May Film Society says: Send us a review! Have you seen a movie you want to review? Email capemayfilm@hotmail.com and tell us why you liked it (not what it was about) and why someone else should see it. We’ll take it from there! One free VIP pass to the 2012 Cape May Film Festival, October 19-21, to the first person who sends a review!

each week, Exit Zero ambushes an unsuspecting and deserving citizen with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from one of our fine local florists. All you have to do is answer a question or two by our roving photographer, Gabi Urda. This week’s recipient is 10-yearold Koko Lafferty, who was ambushed at Wawa with her grandmother and her little brother. What are you doing here at Wawa? We’re all getting an afternoon snack. What are you up to today? I’m on my way to cheerleading practice at All Star One. When is the last time you got some flowers? The Cape May Forum Tackles Energy
If you’re looking for inteligent debate among world-class speakers, this weekend offers a great opportunity
W
ho wants to talk about energy when the beach, the bar, and a dizzying choice of restaurants, music venues, theatres, shopping and a wonder of historic and nature tours beckon a Cape May resident or visitor? The Cape May Forum is betting that this weekend attendees will fit all of that in, and still come away all the wiser about the Future of Energy in the US, around the globe, and in their own backyards. There is no question that the nation’s first seaside resort has more to offer than the average New Jersey shore destination. In a beachfront city rich with history and culture, and some of the county’s best beaches, Cape May Forum adds one more first, by creating a city-wide campus, where you can enjoy a lot of vacation and a little university-level learning in the process. This Saturday and Sunday, June 2-3, Cape May Forum (CMF) presents its thirdannual Forum, titled Running on Empty? The Future of Energy. The Forum offers up two days of lectures and panels punctuated by brown-bag gab sessions, headlined by the former Director of Central Intelligence, James Woolsey, and refreshed by a Saturday night reception and gala at the Cape May Winery. Add a Friday and a Monday to sample the rest of Cape May and attendees have a long-weekend and a vacation worthy of a postcard home. ABOUT THE PROGRAM Every time you pick up a newspaper or turn on the evening news, energy seems to dominate the conversation. What are the facts and what are the myths about energy supply and production? Is global warming real? Can the US truly become energy independent? Who is the top foreign supplier of
US oil? Does solar power have promise? What is the future of energy — locally, regionally and globally? Cape May Forum seeks to explore these questions at this year’s Forum. The question is Running on Empty? The topic is The Future of Energy. Nationally-renowned speakers and energy experts come to town for lively and informative dialogue. The keynote speaker, on Saturday June 2, is R. James Woolsey, who served in four presidential administrations, is the former Director of Central Intelligence (19931995), and is a Rhodes Scholar. Woolsey’s areas of expertise include alternative and renewable energy and energy security. For years he has sounded the alarm for the US on our dependence on fossil fuels. He strongly believes America needs to find a solution to its dependence on fossil fuels, and advocates the use of alternative biomass fuels such as cellulosic ethanol, and is an advocate of hybrid electric vehicles. A diverse group of speakers drawn from government, business and the nonprofit sector will join Woolsey in a robust discussion. Sessions are designed to offer both thoughtful analysis and practical suggestions to discuss everything from energy-related investments to changes you can make at home, now. Morning and afternoon sessions on each day are in pointcounterpoint format. Saturday, Day One sessions will explore Perils and Potentials of Today’s EnergyLandscape, a state of the union on energy in America and the concerns going forward; and A Green Economy – Is it Achievable? Is it Sustainable? tackles the balance of a strong energy policy and sound environmental policy. Sunday will follow up with panel ses-
sions, Follow the Money — Taxes, Subsidies, Credits and Financing, a look at the financial viability of the future of energy and Energy Advice You Can Use Today, with a panel of financial and sustainability experts to discuss everything from energy investment to changes you can make at home, now. Industry experts and activists head the Forum speakers list: Jim Balaschak, Principal, Deloitte Consulting. Speaks Saturday on the state of US energy, and where we are headed. Alisa Gravitz, Executive Director, Green America. Speaks Saturday on guidelines for America’s energy future. Walt Kuhn, VP Trading at Exelon. Sunday speaker on the impact of funding. Chris Martenson, PhD, economic researcher and futurist. Speaks Sunday on his 3 E’s — Energy, Economy and the Environment. Saturday evening, June 2, CMF will host its annual Big Night Gala and speakers’ reception at the Cape May Winery. This is an evening of food, music and dancing, with the chance to sample some of Cape May’s local wines, in a vineyard setting. The program speakers and panelists will all be on hand to continue the discussions, or just to have fun. All Forum sessions will be held at the Cape May Elementary School on Lafayette Street, the road into Cape May. ABOUT CAPE MAY FORUM Cape May Forum fosters the transformative power of ideas and the arts in America’s first seaside resort. Cape May Forum offers a unique retreat where participants can grapple with the social, moral and political issues of our times. Visit www.capemayforum.org.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady What a beautiful Memorial Day weekend it was — and there were crowds to prove it. Any suggestions for something to do that’s a little off the beaten path? — Crowded Out Already Dear Crowded A recent (and apparently expensive) survey by Temple University pointed out the obvious by saying that Cape May appeals to tourists because of its beaches. That can be hard to believe when you have Mr Clueless Tourist parked next to you on “your” beach. Change it up a little with a trip over the West Cape May Bridge to North Cape May. The beach along the Delaware Bay is relaxing (though unguarded — keep an eye on wee ones), and you can bring your dog to splash around and enjoy a beach day. And goodness knows if your dogs are anything like

Dear Answer Lady I’m a landscaper, my buddy has an office job. So while I’m busting my butt in the heat, he’s sitting on his butt in an air-conditioned office. When he complains about his job (a lot), I want to pop him. —Steamed the Answer Lady’s dogs, they are looking for relaxation, after a long, hard day of… thinking important thoughts. The Answer Lady will not insult anyone’s intelligence here by chiding that one should always clean up after one’s pooch, but you get her drift. There are no waves along the bay, naturally, so leave the surfboard home, and parking is free. There are a couple of great places within a stone’s throw to grab a bite to eat — Harpoon Henry’s or On The Rocks at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry Terminal. Watch the
Dear Steamed Please listen carefully to the Answer Lady: one of life’s losing-est arguments is the my-job-is-WAY-worse-than-yours one. Every job has its challenges, and the Answer Lady can tell you first-hand that sitting on one’s butt does not automatically equal “easy.” It sounds like your friend simply doesn’t like his job. Don’t look at it as a comparison with yours, but for what it is. Then ask him “You don’t seem happy there. Why don’t you look for something else?”

What’s Your Story?
Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here? Who are you and where are you from? I’m Eunice Crookston. I was born and raised in Cape May and I live in Rio Grande now. And what were you doing when we interrupted you? I’m the secretary here at the United Methodist Church. Are you working on anything special today? Yes. Today we were cutting out pillowcases for children with cancer for the ConKerr Cancer Group. That’s good work you’re doing. Are you ready for summer? Well, I’m ready for the summer. I just don’t know if I’m quite ready for the parking situation just yet. I grew up on Lafayette, and as a child I remember waving to the tourists as they drove out of town on Labor Day. The theme of this week’s issue is strawberries. Do you have any particular thoughts on strawberries you’d like to share with us? I LOVE strawberries. And my grandchildren are really big fans of my strawberry pie. Interview by Kate Chadwick PHOTOGRAPH by Gabi Urda

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
adore strawberries, but at the same time cannot abide to be near them. This stems from a dreadful World War Two South Pacific incident, which saw me stranded on a tiny island. We had been touring with a show to entertain the troops (I had been asked to take a break from active service after the Mussolini Incident, when I had failed to keep up with current events and the ever-changing allegiance of the Italian army and had misunderstood my orders and freed him from his mountain captivity rather than assassinating him: easy mistake, I say in my defense, and the fella got what was coming to him in the end, eh?) and I was going down a storm as “Bloody Mary.” Well, those crafty Japanese torpedoed our ship, and though I succeeded in boarding and holing the attacking submarine, I received a blow on the head from an unexploded cannon shell and when I awoke, I was on the beach of a sandy outcrop no more than a mile across. By some strange botanical accident all that grew there was strawberries, and they
grew thick over everything. At first I was delighted and gorged myself, then as the days became weeks, then months, I came to mildly dislike, then loathe and finally detest them with all my being. Even my considerable cooking skills and ability to rustle up dishes as imaginative as “strawberry omelet without the eggs,” “modified* stew of wild boar, carrots and strawberries (*currently missing wild boar and carrots)” and range of delicious strawberry desserts could not save me from
a certain red-stained madness. To make the situation worse, when my clothing wore through I had to fashion new apparel from strawberry leaves. I was rather proud of my fitted three-piece suit, with matching hat and spats (no shoes, though: the leaves are too fragile), and I even made a structure of a paste of chewed strawberries mixed with sand and leaves. But by the time I was rescued a year later I was quite quite mad, and to this day my skin retains a slight strawberry sheen from constant immersing in the juices, and I am taunted, on calm days, by the faintest odor of the very same berry coming from my pores. So while I owe my life to the humble plant, I am also driven to a sudden terrible rage if one of the fruits comes within ten paces of me without advance warning. The same happens when I hear “Strawberry Fields Forever,” but that, in part, stems from my old creative feud with the McCartney Lad, and is not entirely the strawberry’s blame. I have something of the same distaste for pineapples, and chimpanzees on tricycles, but that is for another day.

Activity Of The Week
M
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Sail into yard sale season.
emorial Day has come and gone, and that means it’s yard sale season in Cape May. Yard sales, or flea markets, are the original way to recycle, but there is a dispute as to where the term “flea market” originated. Some people believe it comes from the “Fly Market,” where early Dutchspeaking New Yorkers sold their wares near a swampy valley, or “vlie.” Hipsters have readopted this term — the Brooklyn Fly Market promises a much more stylish selection of junk. Others insist it began as “flee market,” named by second-hand dealers who were hastily relocated in an urban renewal project. The more likely source of the term is the Parisian “marché aux puces,” which translates to the “market where you get fleas,” a good-natured joke about the “buyer-beware” nature of used goods. The Kiwanis Club of Cape May Yard Sale kicks off yard sale season in Cape May. This big event, traditionally held the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, is full of bargains for smart shoppers, and plants for sale by the
Garden Club of Cape May. The Kiwanis Club, a group of active volunteers, also gives locals a chance to clean house — something to keep in mind for next year. But don’t be dismayed that you’ve missed it — after the Kiwanis sale, yard sales pop up in Cape May every weekend. Watch for signs, or just cruise around in the early morning hours, and you are likely to
find a sale or two. Good yard sale shopping requires planning. Go early. Know what you’re looking for, whether it’s furniture to last a lifetime or a case of books to read over the summer. If you are shopping for big pieces, leave the bike at home, and bring a wagon, or your car. Bring plenty of cash, in small bills — singles are the most valuable currency at a yard sale. Be prepared to bargain—gather all the items you want and offer a price for the lot. Yard sale shoppers come from all walks of life, from committed recyclers who hate waste, to artists seeking raw materials, to collectors, to bargain hunters. Some shoppers are professionals — my sister can spot a quality sale from three blocks away. Others are amateurs, looking to stock a new house or replace a lost tool. Some are treasure hunters, hoping to be like the man who discovered that an “ugly” painting he bought for $2.50 was worth $75,000. Most are happy if the item they buy for $2.50 is worth a dollar. Start your Cape May day with a yard sale — you may just bring home a treasure. Next week: Magnificent Manicures

Some would say it is the year of the century club here at Lower Cape May Regional High School. Senior baseball player Mike Mulligan reached 100 hits on May 13th. Needing only three hits to reach that goal going into the game against Wildwood High School, Mulligan said that the only thing that was going through his head as he hit the ball was “please don’t catch it.” The son of Jeanne Oetting and Bill Mulligan of the Villas, Mulligan said, “Without them, I would have never started playing baseball as early as I did. I pretty much started playing the day I was born.” Not only are his parents his biggest supporters, in baseball and otherwise, but Mulligan gives his father the credit for all of his baseball success. Mulligan will be attending college at Immaculata University in Pennsylvania, where the star catcher plans to continue his baseball career. He also plans to major in Criminology, with the hopes of someday becoming a police officer. by Jess Nagel/photograph by Jackson Sole

ivy is an adorable 8-month-old Lab-Pointer mix weighing about 45 pounds. Ivy is a special needs dog because she is deaf. Her owner was evicted and left her behind, but Ivy is still very good-natured. Deafness does not stop her from being energetic, playful and social! Ivy is very trainable, but her deafness will require a little more effort. And she’s okay with other dogs, cats and kids. The adoption fee is $95.
«
Nesbitt is a young American Pit Bull. He is adorable and affectionate and growing into an elegant adult. Although energetic and playful, he’s well mannered and gentle, and responds well to direction and correction. Nesbitt already knows sit and paw and is smart enough to learn more. He likes other dogs but is fearful of cats. Nesbitt prefers going for runs so he will need leash training. The adoption fee is $95.
«
Patches is an 18-month-old Border Collie mix with one blue eye and one brown eye. He has lots of energy and enjoys chasing balls and playing tug of war. Patches will require plenty of daily exercise and training, and needs to be placed with someonewho can dedicate the time needed for training and socialization. Because of his energy level the best home for him should not include kids under age 10, or cats. The adoption fee is $95.

n tap in our Second Stage Series is At Wit’s End. Oscar Levant once said of himself, “There is a fine line between genius and insanity. I have erased this line.” Chuck Muckle brings to life this enfant terrible of radio and television shows of the 40s, 50s and 60s; Levant was an accomplished musician, author and bon vivant. The second-banana costar of such classic films as An American in Paris and The Barkleys of Broadway, Levant was the darling “bad boy” of mid-20th century American popular culture: his talk show was cancelled after off-color comments about Mae West’s sex life. The perfect companion to Uncle Jacques’ Symphony, this biopic production brings Oscar Levant’s stories, his music, fears, aspirations, struggles, and joys in this rollicking, musical, comic, and compassionate look at the life of this great composer, pianist, comedian, author, raconteur, eccentric, and hypochondriac. Still haven’t seen Uncle Jacques’ Symphony? Only three weeks left! Audiences adore Dominic Hoffman’s virtuoso performance in this New Jersey premiere: the multitude of characters he creates to tell the story of jazz great Jacques Hoffman have been thrilling audiences. A treasure not to be missed, Uncle Jacques’ Symphony runs Thursdays through Saturdays at 8pm and Saturdays and Sundays at 3pm through June 4. Beyond that, the show runs Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8pm and Saturday at 3pm through June 15. Get your tickets soon!
Above, Chuck Muckle channels the outrageous Oscar Levant in At Wit’s End on June 11. Below, time is running out to catch Dominic Hoffman in Uncle Jacques’ Symphony. Save the date! Cape May Stage’s annual gala is June 24th: A Gatsby Gala! Join us for an elegant evening as the Corinthian Yacht Club of Cape May is transported into the Jazz Age of the 20s, immortalized by Fitzgerald’s masterpiece The Great Gatsby. The evening begins with a complimentary champagne greeting, and segues into a gourmet buffet dinner and dancing among beautiful harbor views. Wander over to the speakeasy cash bar to sample a signature drink. This spectacular evening will include music by Philadelphia’s six-piece band Purple Reign, vintage cars, specialty cocktails, and a live auction featuring once-in-alifetime experiences. This evening will end better for you than it did for Gatsby! For more information, visit capemaystage.org or call 884-1341. There’s always something fun happening at Cape May Stage!

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
any years ago, I had an interesting chat with a commercial fisherman who was tending his nets on Thompson’s Beach Road (and if you are familiar with Thompson’s Beach Road, you know how long ago this encounter was). Several things stand out about that meeting. The first was the man himself. He was ancient, and insofar as he could quote the price of Weakfish in 1928, 1933 and 1956, I surmised that he’d been tending nets a long time; a bayman’s bayman. The other thing that fascinated me was his catch. Yes, there was the odd fish, but most of it consisted of horseshoe crabs. It was clear that there were so many of the hub-capped sized creatures that gill netting was hardly productive. The last thing that fascinated me was his focus on birds. He wasn’t a birder, but he was a keen naturalist and someone whose days were spent engaging the natural world. What I loved most was his names for the birds that were crowding the beaches, drawn to
bounty of horseshoe crab eggs. Most were names I’d never heard of. That one is the Robin Snipe, he said of the large, burly sandpiper (that I knew as a Red Knot). And that one is the Horsefoot Snipe, he said, pointing to a colorful, harlequin patterned bird that in books is called the Ruddy Turnstone. And those over there, he said with a
wave of a hand that encompassed about half the beach, are the Bumblebee Beach Birds. I’m not sure whether he was referring to the Sanderling or the Semipalmated Sandpipers (or both). It takes a birder (or an ornithologist) to care enough to tell them apart. I’ve thought back on this conversation many times over the years. Thought back because at the time, horseshoe crabs were so numerous they were a nuisance to commercial fisherman. How could anyone have foreseen that a few decades later, a use for the nuisance would be found that would result in its populations being depleted. I had another interesting conversation with a commercial fisherman the other day. This man was younger than I (so younger than Methuselah), and was going out to catch the tide and tend his gill nets. After exchanging notes about the weather (no better than usual) and the fishing (no worse than usual), we got on the subject

Bird Droppings ? From Page 111 of horseshoe crabs, and how the numbers are down, and how this will affect the birds. I alluded to the fact that I’d seen the beaches before the onset of commercial harvest. He asked me what it had looked like. I said it looked like the beach was paved in cobblestone. He didn’t reply. He didn’t need to. He’d seen it too. What’s the point here? To point out that crab numbers are just a vestige of what they were and that the shorebird concentrations a shadow of their former abundance? No. It’s to say that diminished as it may be, the gathering of crabs and birds on the beaches of Delaware Bay is still a great phenomena worth seeing. If you’re seeing it for the first time, file the memory away. You may need it as a reference point in decades to come if you come across a commercial fisherman, now old as Methuselah, who will be complaining about the number of crabs clogging his gill nets and how 30 years ago... The Dating Column
Stella Dixon’s take on romance on Old Cape Island
I
HAD dinner with my friend Allison over Memorial Day weekend. Al is a physician’s assistant, and I’ve always pictured her earning a paycheck saving lives. But this is not the case, she told me as we plowed through our third bottle of wine. “I’m on urology service.” Urology is more about saving sex lives than actual lives, at least at the hospital where she works, Al explained. Last week, my friend inserted a penile prosthesis for a 93-year-old man who “demanded” the procedure because his girlfriends (plural) at the nursing home “need” it. I don’t know why it would have come as a shock that a 93-year-old man wants a penile implant. I read an article a while back that explained sex drives don’t diminish with age; hip joints do. Although, the article explained, even this is not prohibitive for most senior citizen lovers. At 26 (nearly 27!), I tend to think of myself as old. I’m drying up, my guy friends tell me. They’re only joking, of course, but it’s true that I’m not getting any younger. But my goodness, if it’s possible to still
be dating when I’m 93, sort of decrepit, and living in a nursing home, I’ve got a long haul in front of me, and plenty of time to figure it out. And this is why I told Matt to slow down. I got to know Matt the day after my dinner with Allison, when a friend invited my dog Rudy and I on a boat ride. Since Matt and I run in the same circle, he happened to be on board, too.
Matt helped me get Rudy into the boat (which, between my dog’s hips and his fear of the water, was no small feat.) Then we spent the afternoon swimming, sunning, and talking. Matt told me that he teaches fifth grade, and in the summer, he works at a recreation center, helping seven-year-old kids fall in love with sports. And if these things weren’t cute enough, the man is sixfoot-seven, and I am a sucker for a tall guy. Later that night, I happened to see Matt at the bar. We drank and talked and figured out we were born on the same day (a sign perhaps?). Then, he pulled me on to the dance floor where he kissed me, and kissed me some more. At the end of the night, Matt asked me back to his place, but even in my tipsy haze, I figured — what’s the hurry? At 93, I might still be dating, meeting men who are ready and raring to go. Drying up? Puh-lease. “Maybe later,” I said. Because when it comes to dating, I sometimes have to remind myself, there’s plenty of later. Especially when you’re only 26.
