Ten Years Later... Happy Birthday, Congress Hall!
The lawn of Congress Hall was packed last Sunday with lemonade-drinking and cake-eating Congress Hall fans, there to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the hotel’s renovation. Pictured are Cape Resorts Group’s Curtis Bashaw, New Jersey Director of Tourism Grace Hanlon, Senator Jeff Van Drew, West Cape May Mayor Pam Kaithern, Cape May Mayor Ed Mahaney, and Congress Hall General Manager John Daily. Subscriber Of The Week
Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Lisa Piatt of Williamsville, Illinois. How long have you been coming to Cape May? My first visit was in 2009 and I’ve been hooked ever since. I try to get here at least twice a year, which is not enough. Who are you normally with? Sometimes by sister, sometimes just me. Favorite thing about Cape May? The beautiful homes, rich history, the ocean. It’s truly a magical place. Least favorite thing? I don’t think I have found anything I don’t like! Favorite restaurants? George’s Place, Mad Batter, Lobster House, Blue Pig Tavern, Ugly Mug, Zoe’s. Favorite place to stay? The Mainstay and The Puffin. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? I would add one more person to the year-round population — me! Favorite thing about Exit Zero? Since I live in the Midwest, EZ is my way of keeping up to date on everything going on in Cape May. And it makes me smile! Least favorite thing about Exit Zero? Not a thing. What’s your T-shirt size? XXL.
Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Kate Chadwick. If you think you know what establishment this is, you could win a gift certificate to spend at a local business. Quotes Of The Week
Random Factoid
“The legends lie cradled in the seagull’s call, and the promise they made are ground beneath the sadist’s fall.” — Jethro Tull “Eagles are seagulls with a good hairdo.” — Doug Coupland “When it blows here, even the seagulls walk.” — Nick Faldo
Seagulls are caring and attentive parents. They pair for life and they take turns to sitting on the nest for three to four hours at a time. The also alternate feeding and protecting their chicks. Juvenile birds form nursery flocks and are then watched over by a few adult males.
Cocktail Recipe Of The Week... The Seagull THERE really is a cocktail called a Seagull, which is very appropriate, given this week’s issue is themed around the seashore’s classic bird. This cocktail is a classic gin drink with a Caribbean twist. The Falernum, a sweet syrup used in tropical drinks, adds a spicy warmth to the Seagull.
Ingredients 1.25 oz Caorunn Gin 0.5 oz Falernum 0.75 oz Lemon juice 0.75 oz Lillet Blanc Garnish Lime twist Add all ingredients and stir and serve into a chilled martini glass.

Talk Of The Town
Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
Buyer’s Remorse WE HAVE been hearing how wonderful the acoustics were at the Peter Nero concert in Convention Hall over Memorial Day weekend (and at the concerts since then), which is a wonderful thing. But paying for the Philadelphia Pops lost the city nearly $15,000 after all was said and done, according to the city, an amount which will be coming out of the tourism utility. At the council meeting on Monday, City Manager Bruce MacLeod went through a line-by-line run-down of income (totaling $107,300) and expenses ($121,899.44). “Of course, we would have liked to see a profit,” MacLeod said, “but the hall did open on time and within the initial budget. The show allowed us to test key systems and operations, particularly the air conditioning.” The things is, a free concert would have allowed for the same thing. The last projection we heard from Mayor Ed Mahaney prior to the show was that the concert would total approximately $110,000, “including incidentals.” This didn’t seem realistic to us (considering it cost $85,000 alone to commission the Pops, another $20,445 to meet their sound/light/stage requirements, and $868 to meet the orchestra’s drink requirements), and we don’t think it’s likely this number was really realistic to the mayor, either. He must have known that staff labor would cost money ($2,815), and he must have known that the media advertising purchased by the city would cost money, too ($4,610). Then there are the “little” things, like the $1,125 spent on postage for a mailer that went out, or $1,770 needed to rent the
piano. Once again, we find ourselves asking: Why the lack of transparency? In the end, only 496 out of 720 tickets were purchased. The mayor made a point of noting that members of council all purchased their own tickets, and took an active role in pushing sales. But we’d almost feel better if this weren’t the case. You see, the opening concert should have been accessible to everyone, not just the friends of council and folks who can afford to shell out $150 for an event. (Or $250 for an event, as was the case here for the 31 VIP tickets and 48 sponsor tickets that were sold. Never mind the fact that we could have seen Beyoncé in Atlantic City at the same time for less than this amount. What really bugs us is that, since the beginning of all this Pops talk, we’ve only ever heard the $150 figure. We asked MacLeod if these $250 VIP tickets were made available from the beginning, and he assured us that’s the case. Hmmm.) The point is, it was a nice gesture that the city released beach balls into the air over Memorial Day weekend to announce the opening of the hall, but it would have been nicer if many of the people on the beach this day could have enjoyed the show they’ve spent four years waiting for, instead of some inflatable plastic consolation prize. “I personally can’t not say enough about the performance itself,” MacLeod said at the meeting. Well, neither can a lot of people... because they couldn’t afford to experience it.
Happy Birthday, Old Girl IT WAS a picturesque day on the Congress Hall lawn last Sunday — warm, breezy, and sunny (we counted only six small, wispy
clouds). And the afternoon was made all the more beautiful by a ceremony and f lagpole dedication commemorating the tenth anniversary of Congress Hall’s grand reopening. It was in 1991 that the building closed its doors due to fire code violations, and in 2002 that Curtis Bashaw, along with business partner Craig Wood, reopened them. “One of our favorite things about Congress Hall would have to be the cosmopolitans made by [Brown Room bartender] Steve Augustine,” said Kim Russell, who recently moved to Cape Island from Maryland. “I would say they’re the best in Cape May, but they’re even better than that.” The quality of the food and drink is something we heard about more than once, when we asked others — those lounging by the pool with magazines, sipping margaritas in Adirondack chairs overlooking the ocean, and chasing wee ones through f lower beds — what they love about this Cape May institution. But mostly, we heard about the sense of tradition this place instills. “We’ve been coming here since the renovation,” said Carol Chrezanowski. She and husband John, based in Philadelphia, were enjoying the rocking chairs on the hotel’s veranda while members of Tribeca Grand played “chilled out” music (according to band spokesman Jim Di Renzo) nearby. “We brought our children here,” Carol said, “and they’ll likely bring their own children here some day, too.” Then there’s Jim Moffatt, who lived

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 and worked in Congress Hall as a high school student in the ’60s. “He spent all of his money on liquor and cigarettes,” joked his wife Betty, as we waited by the pool for the ceremony to start. “And when Curtis reopened this hotel, he took Jim on a tour of the old room that Jim loved so much. He’s such a gracious man.” It was just about this time that Bashaw took the podium — located on a long stage next to the hotel’s new fifty-six foot wooden f lag pole, with the Atlantic Ocean in the background — to welcome us. “Congress Hall has been providing hospitality for 196 years,” he said, “and it’s very special for us to be able to continue this tradition.” It’s a tradition that dates back to 1816, he explained, when politician Thomas Hughes built Congress Hall. Hughes called it The Big House by The Sea, but locals called it Tommy’s Folly, believing its size would be off-putting for visitors. Eventually, in 1829, the building would be renamed in honor of Hughes’ ascension to Congress.
Total, the hotel has been sold nine times (the first time in 1826 for $3,000), and destroyed by fire twice. In 1958, it was a man by the name of Gilbert Ramagosa who took the reigns, along with Senator Charles Sandman. Because the men couldn’t gain permission to build a ferris wheel on the beachfront, they decided to sell, in 1967, to the Reverend Carl McIntire. It was twentyfour years later that the hotel was forced to close, and just four years after this that Curtis Bashaw, McIntire’s grandson, took over (though he’d been working in the dining room since he was a young boy). Now, “Congress Hall has become a second home for generation upon generation of people,” he said. Speeches were also given by the New Jersey Director of Tourism Grace Hanlon (who called Congress Hall a “gem” that has “raised the bar” in New Jersey), Cape May City Mayor Ed Mahaney (who called this a “key building” that unties the community), West Cape May Mayor Pam Kaithern (who acknowleded the hotel’s “fantabulous” staff ) and Senator Jeff Van Drew (who called Congress Hall’s story “the
American story”), before the moment we’d all been waiting for. The US Coast Guard Color Guard carried in a f lag, reminiscent of that that which stood in this space in 1816, and raised it on an oak f lagpole built by Danny Kaifetz, one of only four wooden f lagpole makers in North America. This is the 99th pole he’s built, and though Danny was in a hurry to get on the road (he had an eight hour trip back to upstate New York where he’s based), he did tell us that “this pole belongs here, and it was a real honor to build it.” We, on the other hand, were in a hurry to check out the cake, which was modeled after Congress Hall’s newly adopted logo featuring a key (“to symbolize that the doors of Congress Hall are open all the time,” said Curtis). It was nearly as big as the pastry chef herself, Megan KlymerMickey, who baked it from 8am on Saturday until 3:30pm Sunday. Because the dessert was actually four sheet cakes put together, three people were tasked with slicing it, and it was craning to watch this process

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 14 that we bumped into Bashaw. “No,” he told us, “It does not feel as though it’s been 10 years.” (Which is a sentiment shared by General Manager John Daily, who referred to the last decade as “a f lash.”) As for what we can expect from this hotel in another 10 year’s time? “A place that is settled into itself,” Bashaw said. “And that much more beloved.”
As The Gull Flies
We stopped in to pay a visit to our favorite neighbors, Ken Low and Sharon Flanagan at the Bird House of Cape May, figuring they would be up for a nice chat about seagulls. Imagine our dismay when Sharon hit us with this shocker: “There is no such thing as a seagull.” What is this crazy talk? We know quite a few beach-goers, not to mention French fry eaters, who might beg to differ. But, given that Sharon is an expert here, we’ll take her word for it. “There are lots of types of gulls, mostly herring gulls and laughing gulls here in the Cape May area. In fact, this area has one of the largest populations of laughing gulls
in the entire country. But there are other gulls around the country and the world, like Ring-Billed gulls, Bonaparte gulls, and Ivory gulls, although Ivory gulls are mostly found in Iceland.” Getting back to local gulls, is it our imagination, or is there anything they won’t eat? “They are pretty omnivorous,” Sharon tell us. “But that’s mostly because they do have so much choice around here. Obviously
gulls who live in more remote regions aren’t eating French fries — they eat them here because they can.” (Hmm, kind of like us.) By the way, you don’t have to be a bird lover to appreciate a trip to the Bird House, although if you are, you’ll love it. They have a beautiful selection of merchandise, including standard bird stuff, like feeders and bird seed, and of course, bird houses. And they also have the quirky — like really cool doorknockers, handmade for them by Alexander’s Wooden Collectibles. And speaking of wooden birds — check out the gorgeous, hand-carved and largerthan-life gulls, crafted by well-known artisan Lance Lichtensteiger of Ducktrap Trading Company. The Bird House has two of them — one captured in flight that can be hung suspended from your ceiling, and the other (a ring-billed gull, to be precise) posing on a wooden post. They are stunning, and range in price from $540-$650. And best of all, Sharon tells us, “They are really quiet and they don’t eat much.”
PARTING SHOT There was only one thing missing from the remarkable concert held at the new
Cape May Convention Hall on Sunday night... and that was the man whose memory was being honored. At the end of the George Mesterhazy tribute, 13 superb musicians took the stage to perform a rousing finale. It still feels weird that George, who passed away in April, wasn’t among them.

Lunch? Choose from two soups - sometimes three! - and a panini special. Dinner time is any time - grab it now and reheat it later. Or make ameal out of one of their outrageous salads. Specials every day.

The Movie Column
M
By Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival
y friend, who I won’t name so let’s just call him “Chump,” says to me, “You have to see Men in Black III. It’s bad ass.” I shrug it off — missed the first and second, why see the third? He gave me a “get out of here,” wave and said, “Good things come in threes.” I said, “You got that wrong, death comes in threes. Like Final Destination 3, Lethal Weapon 3 — like that.” He gave me the wave again. “It’s better than Toy Story 3,” he said knowing full well that them be fighting words. Better than Toy Story 3… scandalous! As we all know, Toy Story 3 is one of the greatest movies ever made. Men in Black III, compared to Toy Story 3? Unthinkable! But it got me to the theater. I had to see why Chump was playing up this movie. Let’s take a look at this series. The original Men in Black came out 15 years ago, and was met with great reviews and high scores. I didn’t see it — seemed like maybe a better-than-average alien f lick. I’m not into alien f licks. Men in Black II arrived
Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin star in a revamped Men In Black III in 2007, and f lopped with audiences and critics alike. So now Men in Black III. Much to my surprise, I actually liked this film. And you don’t need to see the first two to follow these characters, nicely portrayed Will Smith and Josh Brolin (playing a younger version of Tommy
Lee Jones’ character). In this adventure, there’s time travel, more than your fair share of clichés, and aliens out the wazoo. Were you expecting Citizen Kane here? Not unless Rosebud is an eight-legged, foureyed plasma blob! But one scene in particular is very touching — high marks for that. Some jokes f lubbed, and we’re all getting a little tired of the “Oh my! The entire earth is in danger!” routine. What is with these films (i.e. The Avengers, where gods from another galaxy were threatening all of us)? Do writers sit around a big table and say, “Well, we’ve got either terrorists or otherworldly creatures that threaten the entire planet. Go with the otherworldly creatures!” Maybe they’re right — terrorists are getting too much air time anyway. But isn’t there another direction you can take a plot? Not this time. While it’s good summer fun, Men in Black III does not come close to Toy Story 3! Stuff that in your alien ray gun and smoke it, Chump! And no, I don’t exactly know what that last line meant.

Just $29
* The drunk fellow we met in The Ugly Mug who claimed to be a scientist DID fall alseep within three seconds of laying it on a Seagull Pillow. That proves it.
Each pillow is hand-made from 300 gulls, harvested unethically and unsustainably by shotgun, dog and anti-aircraft battery, from the hordes that plague Cape May’s beach. Call (609) 770-8479 and say “Slaughter me some flying vermin to sleep on”.

The Exit Zero Bouquet Ambush
«
each week, Exit Zero ambushes an unsuspecting and deserving citizen with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from one of our fine local florists. All you have to do is answer a question or two by our roving photographer, Gabi Urda. This week’s recipients are Mike and Karen Doherty, from Midland Park, New Jersey, who were ambushed while lounging on the porch at the Virginia Hotel. What are you doing here? We’re staying here at the Virginia for a couple of days. What are you up to today? We’re getting ready to have dinner at The Ebbitt Room tonight. When is the last time you got some flowers? [Karen] I got flowers last Monday, when I won the centerpiece at a dance. photo by gabi urda... flowers By Kate’s

Sleeping Around
Exit Zero tests the beds of Cape May’s hotels and inns. This week... Leith Hall Where is it? Leith Hall is located at 22 Ocean Street, a mere half-block from the beach and a two block stroll to the Washington Street Mall. What is it? It’s a beautiful inn, elegantly and lovingly restored to the glory of its Victorian heyday. Who runs it? Leith Hall is owned and operated by huband-and-wife team Susan and Elan Zingman-Leith, who are not only among the most social innkeepers we’ve met, they are historic preservationists as well, and it shows. How many rooms? There are three suites and five rooms at Leith Hall, as well as a cozy parlor and a small library with a game table set up. And the front porch is a relaxing room of its own. What’s the vibe? Leith Hall manages to be both period proper and exceptionally casual at once, no easy feat for a place that prides itself on Victorian 1886 ambiance. Sure, it’s full of amazing antiques, but help yourself to a DVD, and grab a beach towel from the basket in the hallway (beach chairs are out back by the outdoor shower, by the way). Amenities? We had a second-floor
suite — The Turkish Suite, which was completely unexpected and crazy cool. Who knew that Victorian folks were fascinated with exotic decor? Our super-knowledgable hosts do. Peacock feather fans, a beautifully beaded valance and exotic hanging lamps, even a camel saddle. There were lots of windows, and the suite was equipped with a separate sitting area with TV/DVD, comfy couch, and a stack of magazines. There was a table for sitting and eating while gazing out the window at the ocean view, and a mini-fridge. What’s the bed like? Our king-sized
bed was topped with a lovely, exotic (there’s that word again) canopy and brass head-andfootboard. We had a nice firm matress topped with lots of pillows, and it was good night, Irene. Oh, and a stunning tableau awaits you on the ceiling, festooned with beautiful stars made of period wallpaper to gaze at while you drift off. What’s for breakfast? Elan handles the cooking around here. Tea time (between 4-5pm) featured lemonade and iced tea, along with fresh-baked raspberry coffee cake, brownies with mint candies on top, and an exquisite lemon pound cake. Breakfast: eggs scrambled with cream cheese and dill — outstanding — with sausage patties and blueberry muffins. INSIDER TIP: You’ll find a binder in your room with facts about its decor, brochures and maps, and a brief write-up of the town’s restaurants, thoughtfully broken down by price. RANDOM FACT: Elan and Susan are published authors on a couple of books on Victoriana. Contact info: Call (609) 884-1400, or check out leithhall.com.

None of that generic nonsense you see in other papers... a puzzle just for “Exit Zero”! By Kate Chadwick So YOU love crosswords? Great. Sit down, get a cup (or glass) of your favorite beverage, relax and enjoy this puzzle. The answers to the crossword are all related to our themed issue, which is seagulls. Across 2. Most birds known by the general term “seagull” are actually these types of gulls — also the name of a canned fish. 4. This small seabird has a bed-andbreakfast named after it on Jackson Street in Cape May. 5. This song, performed by Engelbert Humperdinck, appears on the soundtrack of the 1996 film Beavis and Butthead Do America. 9. These large seabirds are found primarily in the Pacific region, and you certainly don’t want one around your neck. 10. Most of the world’s seagull population is born in this US west coast state. 12. A recent Exit Zero editorial cartoon featured seagulls enforcing this new Cape May beach regulation. 13. Male gulls have legs that are this eyecatching color. 17. A group of seagulls once kept marauding locusts at bay from farmers’ crops in this state, earning them the nickname The Mormon Air Force, as well as the honor of being named the official state bird. 21. Jonathan Livingston Seagull, written by this man, was published in 1972, reaching the top of the New York Times bestseller list and remaining there for 38 weeks. 24. Cape May had a tiff a couple of years ago with the Department of Environmental Protection over these busy little birds you’ll find hanging out on Cape May area beaches. Down 1. (Hint: just look at them.) 19. “Seagull” was a track on this rock band’s self-titled debut album in 1974. 20. A person who is easy to fool is said to be this. 21. The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I’m confused. I was at Carney’s with a buddy, and a woman across the bar made direct eye contact with me and gave me a big smile. My buddy said it didn’t mean anything, so I didn’t go talk to her. Then I was at Acme with my sister, and a woman there made direct eye contact with me and gave me a big smile. My sister said it was a sign that she wanted me to talk to her. Which is it? — Mixed signals Dear Mixed This is a complicated issue. It’s not always a case of whether the signs are clear, it’s more often whether the reader is paying attention. For instance, on the bridge coming into Cape May from the Garden State Parkway, there are signs specifically prohibiting bicyclists from riding their bikes on the bridge, instructing them instead to
Wise answers to perplexing questions
walk them over. But at least once a week, the Answer Lady sees a bicyclist blithely pedaling along as she careens into town. There are also signs instructing motorists to yield to pedestrians at several walkways throughout our fair city. (Note to said pedestrians: this does not give you liberty to step off the sidewalk with your four tons of beach equipment without so much as a glance in either direction. Let us not be stupid because we are on vacation.) Generally speaking, there are signs that
we should heed: the aforementioned street signs (along with speed limit signs, please), a persistent cough, a boyfriend who can only see you on pre-arranged nights but never on weekends or holidays, and when your skin starts getting that bright pink color after you’ve been lounging around too long on the beach. Oh, and yes — when a woman makes eye contact with you and smiles in a friendly fashion in a public place, that is usually a sign that she is open to discourse. (DIScourse, NOT necessarily any other kind of ‘course’.) Dear Answer Lady My boyfriend just dumped me after six months without a hint as to why he did so. I didn’t see it coming at all, and he gave me the old “It’s not you, it’s me” routine. Were there signs that I missed? —Blindsided Dear Blindsided Sometimes signs are there all the time; we just don’t see them until we have some distance from a situation — hence the expression “20/20 hindsight.” If he said it’s not you, take him at his word and move on.

What’s Your Story?
Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here? Who are you and where are you from? I’m Nick Cox, and this is Ray Gradwell. We’re from Cape May. And what were you doing when we interrupted you? We might go surfing. Now, we’re just eating pizza from Brothers II. Good pizza? Yes. Will you wear sunscreen today? No, we don’t play it on the safe side. Do you go to Lower? No, we go to Camden Military School in South Carolina. I’m a sophomore, and Ray is in ninth grade. What do you want to be when you grow up? [Nick] Hmm, a professional surfer. [Ray] That’s a really hard question to answer. Do you have summer jobs in Cape May this year?[Laughs]. No. This week is the seagull issue. What’s the wildest thing a seagull has stolen from your hand? [Nick] A bag. There was no food in it, either. [Ray] I’d have to say a bag of french fries. The Old Fogey
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
S
eagulls are the souls of the damned, brought to hellish life to torment the living. Not that I am prejudiced, you understand: they have the same rights to exist as every other demon-spawn, which is to say none at all. You do not believe me? Have you not seen their mad little rolling eyes? Their cruel hooked beaks that can drive through an inch of solid oak? Their dread webbed feet? All I will say, dear hearts, is when you are abed at night and it’s a full moon, if you live within a mile of the ocean, then keep your windows locked, for the seagulls hunt, then, for souls to devour, or little cookies (they care not which, being as greedy as they are evil). It is also a fact that seagulls are waiting only to outnumber decent living souls, for outright war to begin. In Cape May, that balance has almost been reached, and the moment they do, we will see the birth of King Seagull, a beast of unimaginable proportions and menace, that will consume us all like scraps of fish tossed into the air above the beach.
To that end, Young Albert and I are mounting nightly patrols along the beach, armed only with sharp teeth and a flamethrower (the teeth are Albert’s: mine are easily sharp enough to consume a seagull but I detest the sensation of feathers in my mouth, and have not used them in anger since the closing days of WW2, when I had cause to tear Herman Goering’s throat out without using hands or feet). At the same time, my faithful manservant, Kitchener, mans the anti-aircraft
emplacement atop the D’Catur Mansion, tracking our progress and under strict orders not to open fire until over 1,000 of the horrors gather above. When he does, the sight is magnificent, as guns roar and the sky explodes in clouds of shredded evil, burnt feathers and hastily expelled bird poo. And all trace of our work must be erased before dawn, so as not to alarm Shoebies. Do you not wonder why the beach tractor REALLY trundles back and forth so often? Of course, the local fast food establishments benefit from this arrangement, as do manufacturers of down pillows and novelty back-scratchers. And there’s an armory in Atlantic City that is delighted to receive weekly orders for 10,000 rounds of ack-ack ammo, plus 1000 gallons of napalm. In fact, the only loser is Mrs Kwon, my housekeeper, whom I hear swearing in the laundry when faced with a fresh pile of blood-and-feather-encrusted three-piece suits, but I still her complaints with a reassurance that she is helping defeat The Devil, and that if she does not cease cursing I will smite her with my walking cane.

Activity Of The Week
W
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Magnificent Manicures.
ave hello to summer in Cape May with a stylish manicure. You may take your hands for granted, but they are truly marvelous things. Hands are made up of 29 bones, 34 muscles and 48 nerves. A large portion of your brain is handed over to controlling them. Think of the many definitions: a “hand” is a worker, a pointer, an expert; applause, penmanship, assistance; “to hand” is to pass or to help; to shake hands is to give your word. Even without words, hands express power and submission: they let us pray, give directions, greet, insult, show affection, reject, beg, curse and ward off curses. We decorate our hands with gloves in the winter, and we add rings and bracelets for sparkle, but if you want to put your best foot forward, you’re going to need a manicure. A manicure is an easy, affordable way to add style to your look, even if you’re only wearing a bathing suit. This year, trends include bright, almost neon, colors, and so-ugly-they’re-cool greens, like pistachio and chartreuse. Patterns are in — think
stripes, dots and checks. Be patriotic with a flag manicure — navy blue thumb dotted with white, and alternating red and white fingers. Magnetic nail polish creates wavy looks by way of a magnet in the cap — the longer you hold your nail near it, the more pronounced the wave. The tribal manicure makes your fingernails look like ten little black and white
cookies set on an angle, and the reverse french manicure, with white near the cuticle, makes black and white more modern. If you like texture, consider the caviar manicure, which covers your fingernails with tiny little beads — interesting, but really hard to remove. If you have time on your hands, try a manicure at home. Nail polishes, pens and kits are available at CVS — get nail polish remover, too. Home manicures and pedicures are a handy way to get generations to sit and chat with each other on the porch of your vacation rental. Let grandma hand down some tips did you ever think of using peanuts between your toes to make pedicures easier? Or, if you don’t have a fine hand with a nail brush, see the professionals at a salon like Accent on Beauty, Shear Sunsations or Snippers. Or, add a nail treatment to your spa day at the Cape May Day Spa, or Sea Spa in Congress Hall. An old African proverb says that you should hold a true friend with both hands. You might as well make sure those hands look good. Next week: Harbor Fest

Senior Mary Beth Keeler is the fifth student athlete to join the century club at LCMR. Keeler, the daughter of Debbie and Charles of West Cape May, reached 100 hits in a varsity softball game versus Wildwood. She has been a varsity softball shortstop and pitcher since her freshman year. Along with softball, Keeler also plays field hockey. Keeler has been playing softball since fourth grade and said her favorite part of the sport is “being a part of the team.” Her most memorable moment is her recent milestone of 100 hits. Before getting up to bat for her 100th hit, she felt “a lot of pressure” because everybody was talking about it, but in the end all of her teammates were very excited for her. Keeler credits her athletic success to her father and to her English teacher, Ms. Siscone’s, pre-game pep talk before her 100th hit. Keeler will be attending York College in Pennsylvania and plans to major in respiratory therapy, and she will also be a member of the field hockey team. by alice bur/photograph by devon huff

Aubrey is a sweet young gal who loves to be around people, especially outside. She’s very energetiic and enthusiastic, and will need lots of exercise. Since she is so exhuberant, we recommend a family with older children and a home where she’ll get the training she needs. If you have the patience and time needed for training, please stop by to meet Aubrey. You’ll both be glad you did. The adoption fee is $95.

sam is waiting at the shelter for someone to take him to a forever home! He’s a one-year-old boxer-bulldog mix who is a little hard of hearing. He’s a sweet guy who enjoys car rides, knows some basic commands, and loves to play. He is a strong and forceful boy, so will need to go to a home without children. If you’re interested, come to the shelter to see if he is the dog for you. The adoption fee is $95.
«
Woofer is a big one-year-old boy who is waiting patiently for his forever home. He’s going to need some training and positive reinforcement but he does know basic commands. Because he is such a big guy and can get over-enthusiastic, he must go to a home with older children, and a home with no other pets is recommended. If you’re looking for a good boy who needs a break, come check out Woofer today. The adoption fee is $95.

stallone is waiting patiently at the shelter for someone to take him home. He was brought in with a few others from a house with far too many animals. He is a sweet guy who loves to show affection! sabrina is truly a sweetheart. She is a great lap cat and an all-around lovable feline. Sabrina would make a great addition to any household. She was abandoned, but is truly a a sweet little cat who deserves a forever home. If you think Sabrina is the right girl for you, please stop by the shelter to visit her. The adoption fee is $35.

daisy is waiting patiently to meet you. She is a a friendly younger girl who loves attention and is very outgoing. She doesn’t mind being picked up, and if you’re petting her, she could lay in your arms all day. She’s not too great with other cats, so she may need to be the only cat in the household. The adoption fee is $35.

Telling Humanity’s Stories advertisinG feature

hich are your favorite symphonies? Beethoven’s 9th? Mozart’s Jupiter? Mahler’s 5th? These works have persisted in humanity’s psyche for centuries for very simple reasons: they speak to that which makes us human, to the best part of ourselves. Only two weeks to add another favorite symphony to your list: Uncle Jacques’ Symphony. Dominic Hoffman, in a virtuoso performance, tells the story of his Uncle Jacques, a jazz drummer in 50’s Chicago. The multitude of characters he creates to tell his story have been thrilling audiences for weeks, with Jacques’ friends and acquaintances weaving a rich tapestry of sound, speaking to the best parts of ourselves. A treasure not to be missed, Uncle Jacques’ Symphony runs Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 3pm through June 15. Get your tickets soon! Our Second Stage Series is in full swing! On June 11, Chuck Muckle brings to life one of the most intiguing, contentious characters of the mid-20th century: Oscar Levant in At Wit’s End. Levant once said of himself, “Underneath this flabby exterior is an enormous lack of character.” The enfant terrible of radio and television shows of the 40s through 60s, his talk show was cancelled after off-color comments about Mae West’s sex life. The perfect companion to Uncle Jacques’ Symphony, this biopic brings Levant’s stories, music, aspirations, struggles, and joys to the stage. It’s a rollicking,

Bird Droppings
L
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
et’s talk about Indigo Buntings. Inda-wha? Indigo Buntings. A small, common, drop-dead-gorgeous bird that thrives where woods meet fields. The bright blue plumage puts a summer sky to shame. The sharp, glittery notes of the birds’ song gladden the heart. It is just about the most spectacular thing you will ever see this side of the pearly gates and a Super Bowl Ring for the Philadelphia Eagles and... You’ve never seen one. What a stupendous shortfall in your life which, very fortunately, can be amended. Indigo Buntings are pretty common in Cape May. All you need to do is put yourself in fortune’s path. First, a little bit about the bird. Indigo Buntings are about the size of a sparrow and (in case you haven’t guessed) they’re an amazing indigo blue. At least the males are indigo blue. The females are cryptically brown and look more like sparrows. It goes with their ambition not to be seen when incubating the clutch of three to four
eggs in the small, cup-like nest placed in low shrubs, approximately one to three feet above the ground. Boy, you’re thinking, that guy Seymore is one smart dude to know all this cool stuff about birds. Uh, no. This guy Seymore just knows that there are books like Kenn Kaufman’s Lives of North American Birds and David Sibley’s Guide to Bird Life and Behavior
that has all this neat natural history information in it. The books are open on my lap. I’m just quoting the text. You are one trip short of the Cape May Bird Observatory’s (CMBO) store on East Lake Drive in Cape May Point from being as knowledgeable as I am. The place is filled with books that are packed with information like this. Back to Indigo Buntings. The birds arrive in late April, and remain in Cape May until early November. But the best time to see them is now, when males are really vocal and really bright. Sitting out on the tops of bushes, singing their bunting trimmed hearts out. They are also fond of utility lines. In fact, seem to prefer them. When you are as beautiful as a male Indigo Bunting, you want to stand out and being the only bird perched on a wire serves this ambition. My own experience with this species goes all the way back to 1958. I was a wee little Thanu then. Armed with a pair of

Bird Droppings ? From Page 111 WW II binoculars borrowed from my dad, searching the world for all the birds Ma Nature could muster my way. I didn’t have a field guide (i.e. a book to help me identify the birds I saw in the field). And you can buy one or twenty of these at CMBO, too. All I had were a bunch of Audubon leaf lets that I got in the mail, including the one featuring Indigo Bunting. I never thought I’d see a bird this beautiful, but I wanted to be prepared just in case. It took years to find one. That’s because I didn’t know where or how to look. Cape May Bird Observatory has simplified this, too, with daily walks all summer long, many of which cut right through prime Indigo Bunting habitat. Want to brighten your day? Go on a quest for the bird whose plumage puts a summer sky to shame. The only thing more of a shame right now is that the photo here is in black and white. Should have saved this one for the color issue! But if you want to see exactly what you should be looking for in resplendent color, head over to the Cape May Bird Observatory — THE place for all your nature needs. Ask the staff to show you an
This black-and-white photo does not do the colorful Indigo Bunting justice Indigo Bunting in one of the field guides. Pick up a free birding map, checklist and schedule of daily walks. You can talk to our staff about the best spot to find Indigo Buntings, check out optics, field guides, and anything else you might need — or don’t know you need yet! CMBO is located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point (609.884.2736), and is open from 9:30am to 4:30pm every day except Tuesdays. Our staff are always willing to help with questions. Scan the bookshelves for bargains in the used and

vintage books section (maybe even a used field guide), look at the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise, including a terrific lithograph done just for the CMBO, or just browse. Take a look at the sighting sheets to check what’s being seen out in the field, check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars. If it’s nice, sit outside on our garden benches and enjoy the birds and the view of Lake Lily. If you can’t make it in person, you can also visit us online www.BirdCapeMay. org — where birding Cape May is only a click away! Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for the New York Times. You can join Pete for his Monday morning walk at the South Cape May Meadows. Just meet by 7:30am in The Nature Conservancy parking lot on Sunset Blvd. Loaner binoculars are available at no cost; the walk is $6 for CMBO or NJ Audubon members; $10 for non-members.

The Dating Column
Stella Dixon’s take on romance on Old Cape Island
T
HIS is how Tom’s relationships usually go: He pursues a girl who is pretty and together, she falls for his boy-next-door charm, they date for six weeks, and then — only when she’s sufficiently hooked — he begins to doubt. “I can’t put my finger on why,” he’ll tell me about the flavor of the month. “But it’s just not there between us.” (This, I’ve tried to tell him, is nothing but a euphemism for “I think I can do better.”) This is not Tom’s fault. He doesn’t want to begin questioning these women. They’re charming, after all, smart and funny. And the last one could have graced the cover of Glamour magazine, no exaggeration. Truth be told, I’m not sure Tom can do better. But — like clockwork — he hits the six-week mark and begins to doubt. Tom dumped the last girl after they’d just crawled into bed. (Timing was never his thing.) She was hurt, of course, as she marched out of the apartment, still wearing his oversized T-shirt, and he was feeling pretty lousy over it last weekend.
“But at least I know I made the right decision,” he told me during a jog along the promenade. “Definitely.” And then, just a mile or so later: “At least, I think I made the right decision.” And there it was again. Doubt. The kryptonite of emotionally competent men across Cape May. All of the stress and heartache of yet another breakup, and Tom was still feeling plagued by uncertainty. So what’s a person to do? Do we chalk
our doubts up to good instinct, follow our gut, and dump our significant others at the first twinge of misgiving? Doubt, after all, might just be a wonderful safety mechanism meant to alert us when something is terribly amiss. (I have a few friends who wish they would have taken their cold feet more seriously before they walked down the plank, er, aisle.) Or, do we ignore the doubt, certain only that certainty — at least when it comes to love — is a bit of misnomer; only a fool is ever 100% sure. And besides, doubt may be a sign, simply, that we’re asking all the right questions. (It only seems as though Kate never questioned Leo, but inside, she was likely saying: Sure, he’ll never let go, but will he take out the trash?) Personally, I think a little bit of doubt is healthy. To run for the hills because of it seems like a waste. Only a child really believes that true love dispels all doubt. In fact, I’m pretty sure it’s the thing that breeds it the most, making us question ourselves, our future plans, and what matters most. Or at least... I think that’s the case.
