How long have you been coming to Cape May? I’ve been visiting Cape May since 1988. Who are you normally with? My darling wife and love, Mary Lou. Favorite thing about Cape May? The pleasant walk-ability of the town, and the pleasant people of Cape May. Least favorite thing? Crossing the bridge to leave Cape May is always sad. Favorite restaurants? Lucky Bones (Great new cookbook!), The Rusty Nail, The Washington Inn, and George’s Place. Favorite place to stay? Our condo in The Devonshire because we have the best neighbors in the world there. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? I would like an attractive, upgraded promenade. Favorite thing about Exit Zero? The steadfast dedication to community…and Aleksey is cool too. Least favorite thing about Exit Zero? That it hasn’t won the Pulitzer Prize…yet. What’s your T-shirt size? My T-shirt size is medium.

Quotes Of The Week
Random Factoid
“You may be a redneck.... if your lifetime goal is to someday own a fireworks stand.” — Jeff Foxworthy “I’m thinking about the fireworks that go off when you smile.” — Chrissie Hynde “The fireworks begin today. Each diploma is a lighted match. Each one of you is a fuse.”— Edward Koch
THE first recorded fireworks in England were at the wedding of King Henry VII in 1486. They gained popularity during the reign of Henry VIII. Queen Elizabeth I created the post of fireworks master, so someone would be in charge of organizing firework displays for great occasions.
Cocktail Recipe Of The Week... The Firecracker WE LOVE the Fourth of July for the fireworks, especially those which come in liquid form. This cocktail is said to be pretty “explosive” in flavor and booziness, so be careful, it’s not for the casual drinker. It might be best to hold off on this one until after the family barbeque.
Ingredients 1 oz vodka of your choice 2 oz dark rum 1/2 sloe gin 2 oz orange juice Pour vodka, dark rum and sloe gin over ice in a rocks glass, fill the rest of the way with orange juice, stir, and enjoy while. Preferably while watching the fireworks display.

Talk Of The Town
Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
A Fourth To Remember GIVEN that the Fourth of July is just days away, we thought we’d do some investigating into the coolest Independence Day celebrations on the island, so all you need to figure out is what red, white, and blue outfit you’re going to wear… The Montreal This place has got one of our favorite vibes on Cape Island, but especially on the Fourth. The Hirschs (three generations of them) have been hosting a private barbeque for hotel guests for 40 years, and for the last three, they’ve been sponsoring one very American concert for the public on the roof of the hotel. “The E Street Shuffle is the band,” Montreal owner Larry Hirsch told us. “And they’re a Bruce Springsteen cover band. Who doesn’t like Springsteen? And what other band — and I mean rock band, not John Philip Sousa — exemplifies America more?” We caught up with Ryan Loughlin, the band’s guitarist, who told us what it’s like to play at the Montreal. “It’s one of the most scenic shows we’ve done, overlooking the ocean the way it does. And it’s a unique vibe, because it caters to everyone, ages four to 70. Then there was that perfectly timed moment two years ago where we hit our last chord of Jersey Girl, and boom, fireworks. It was a seamless transition, and that was pretty special.” Also special, according to dining room manager Jonathan Hirsch, is the food (and the 40 microbrew beers) served in the Montreal’s restaurant, Harry’s. “You’re not going to see sushi here,” he told us. “Don’t get me wrong, I love it, but we’re about
comfort food.” In other words, good oldfashioned American fare, served by a good old-fashioned American family. “Ten years ago, when this was still a very small celebration — when we did egg races and pin the tail on the donkey — my dad and my uncle would be outside cooking hotdogs and hamburgers, and mom and grandma would be serving,” Jonathan said. “Now, we’re still up there, talking to and interacting with the guests. We try to always maintain that family atmosphere. It’s important to us.” For more info, call (609) 884-7011. Congress Hall If it weren’t for Curtis Bashaw, co-managing partner of Cape Resorts Group, there might not be a fireworks display in Cape May. “There used to be fireworks years ago in the sixties,” he told us, “and then there was a hiatus when the city outlawed them on the beach because, during one show, winds were blowing rough and ash landed on the city. In a town with so much history of big fires, obviously Cape May was nervous, but we were finally able to work out an agreement to use the barge in the water.” Congress Hall, that spectacular Cape Resorts Group Property located on the beachfront, offers a front-row seat. And that’s not all. “Congress Hall has been celebrating the Fourth of July for 196 years, and it’s one of our favorite traditions,” Curtis said. “A couple of years ago, there was a family from New York and they had never been with us for the holiday before. At the end, the dad came up to me and said, ‘We were a little cynical, we thought it might be a lot of hoopla, but this is one of the most special Fourth of Julys we’ve ever had as a family.’
It’s just a simple, old-fashioned way to pay homage to the amazing American story.” To that end, there will be face painters, balloon twisters, carnival games, a lobster bake, and an all-American picnic (complete with 120 pounds of hotdogs and 350 pounds of hamburgers). “We start planning right after the Winter Wonderland events conclude,” said Senior Marketing Manager Jessica Antolini. And then there’s the band, Franny Smith and the Atlantic City Jazz Band, who will play alongside the Congress Hall Festival Chorus. “What we’re looking for is the kind of Fourth of July celebration that our grandparents might have enjoyed,” said Entertainment Director and choir member Myra Vassian. “The music is traditional, things people know and love. We give them the words in the program and people stand right up there and dance and sing.” For more info, call (609) 884-8421. The Ocean Club When we asked manager Neil Berger what makes watching the fireworks from the Ocean Club’s sun deck a special experience, his response was, “Have you been on our deck?” Fair enough. We have been on the deck, and it does seem like it would provide a pretty magical view of the show. “It’s unobstructed,” Neil said. Not to mention, the soundtrack to your evening will be pretty great here, too. Starting at 7pm, there will be live reggae with Rolly Gray and Sunfire, who garnered a fanatical following when they used to play at the old Shire. Then there are the three dollar bottles of beer, five dollar glasses of Champagne, and free hors d’oeuvres. “It’s going to be a good time for

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 all ages,” Neil said. Plus, it’s the first annual celebration, so it’s your chance to witness the beginning of something pretty special. For more information, call (609) 8847000. The Grand Jimmy Gonzalez, Beverage Manager at the Grand, gave us the 4-11 on the hotel’s second annual Red, White, and Blue picnic. “It started when myself and one another manger watched the fireworks from our roof deck a couple of years back. We thought, ‘This is an amazing spot; why aren’t we capitalizing on this?’” The men decided they wanted to share the experience (and the awesome ocean view) with others, and the picnic was born. “We’re going to have patriotic-themed drinks, martinis, and special cocktails,” Jimmy said, “I just can’t reveal what they are yet.” That’s okay; we like surprises. We also love the sound of a traditional barbeque. “Think grilled chicken, burgers, dogs, watermelon, and macaroni salad; it’s the food of a family picnic.” And it’s the games of a family picnic, too.
“There will be a three-legged race, a potato sack race, even a pie eating contest. I’m from a neighborhood where every Fourth of July, the kids would play these games. We’re trying to duplicate this and make it a tradition.” A DJ will provide the music for what will ultimately turn into a dance party for all ages, Jimmy says. But the real reason to go? “Instead of having to cook and clean up, you can come to our place, and have us do that. You’ll leave with that great patriotic feeling. It was pretty surreal last year.” Tiny Cruise Line But maybe you don’t feel like being around people at all. In this case you might want to check out Tiny Cruise Line. It’s the 25-foot ship based out of South Jersey Marina that you can rent for an evening on the water. “There’s something wonderful about watching the fireworks from a boat, surrounded by water, on your own,” says boat captain Dan O’Neill. “No parking issues, either.” Amen to that. The boat can accommodate 12, plus two crew members, and you’re free to bring your own food and booe, even dogs. (Fido is welcome, too.) Plus, the boat is really “cute” according to the two grown men we spoke with (both Captain Dan and Mark Allen of South Jersey Marina), so you know it’s got to
be true. “It’s got a lot of curve appeal,” Dan told us. “It’s got a red and white awning, so it’s a very distinctive boat.” And, incidentally, very appropriate for a Fourth of July celebration. For more information, call (609) 6021118.
Buzz On The Beach LAST week we received an email from the city, inviting us to attend a very feel-good event — the dedication of a section of beach in honor of Cape May Beach Patrol Captain Harry “Buzz” Mogck. (He’s the longest tenured Captain in Cape May history.) The stretch of sand in front of Lifeguard Headquarters, between Cannone and Colton Court Beaches, will now be known as Mogck Beach. It was a beautiful day for the dedication — not too hot, and not a cloud in the sky. But the real beauty of the event came from watching Buzz make his way onto the beach. His family, grandkids and all, had taken him to the Rusty Nail for breakfast while his entire patrol — about 70 guards — gathered on the shore just across the street.

Page 16 Talk Of The Town ? From Page 14 “I was starting to get hot under the collar when I saw them,” he told us. “I don’t like them keeping secrets.” But it wasn’t long before Buzz realized the reason for it, and we think he looked a little choked up as he took his place next to Mayor Ed Mahaney, City Manger Bruce MacLeod, and Deputy Mayor Jack Wichterman. The Mayor read a proclamation which listed some of Buzz’s accomplishments, but since we had such trouble hearing him over the pleasant sound of breaking waves, and the not so pleasant sound of a nearby child screaming “Mom, Mom, Mom,” we got a copy from City Clerk Louise Cummiskey (thanks, Louise!). It talks about Buzz’s career, which began in 1967, and the last 32 years that he’s spent as Captain. In that time, Buzz has “overseen the expansion of the Cape May City Beach Patrol from 16 lifeguard stands to the current 24, which better ensures beach and bathing safety,” he’s “reduced the incidence of death and injury in the aquatic environment through public education, state-ofthe-art equipment, techniques, and technology, including paddle boards, wave run-
Thursday, June 28, 2012 ners, defibrillators, and the introduction of after-hours coverage,” and he’s ensured that “all Cape May City lifeguards must achieve a National Certification, making the Cape May Beach Patrol one of the most respected seasonal Lifeguard Agencies in the Country.” But if you want to know about the real character of a man, you ask the men and women who really know him, so we stopped a couple of guards after the dedication, and although some were in a hurry to get to their stands for the day, they were more than willing to talk to us about their leader Buzz. ”He’s a tremendous man who deserves this honor,” said Pete Pietras. “He’s responsible for starting the Junior Lifeguard Program, which makes kids more comfortable in the water,” said Angela Monaghan. “He’s a wonderful guard and manager who does an excellent job with these young fellas,” said Bob Kennedy. “The most important thing is that they all look up to him.” “He’s a great leader,” said Julia Davies. “You never want to let him down. And he’s hilarious, always picking on someone... in a good way.”
He’s also humble. We asked Buzz how he feels, having been honored in this way, and he told us that he’s most proud of his guards. “You’re only as good as the people around you.” But we did — after some prodding — get him to fill us in on some of his career highlights, which include the making of more handicap-accessible beaches and the establishment of a scholarship program for young guards. On our way home, we approached a family of tourists from Susquehanna, Pannsylvania who’d just set up their blankets and umbrellas near the water’s edge. The two youngest members, a five-yearold named Jack and an eight-year-old named Emma, jumped in the waves nearby. “We’ve been coming here for 25 years,” said the children’s grandmother, Mary Mazikewich. “And with the Cape May Beach Patrol, we always feel safe in these waters.” Us, too. Thanks for that, Buzz.

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 16 say, “excitable” guy. We just spoke with him about the recently-announced Exit 0 International Jazz Festival, coming to Cape May this November 9-11, and he was excited indeed. “Speaking both on behalf of the chamber and as a local hotelier, I’m absolutely thrilled to have an event of this caliber coming to Cape May,” John told us. “Anything that brings people to Cape May in the shoulder season, when we most need the traffic, and particularly an event as wellorganized as this one promises to be, is going to be absolutely awesome for the city.” We have to agree. Organized by Michael Kline, via his New Orleans-based jazz artist representative company, Spy Boy Productions, the festival’s line-up was announced at a press conference last Thursday. The conference was held in the Boiler Room at Congress Hall, which is the official festival hotel, as well as one of several concert venues. Main stage concerts will be held in the new Convention Hall, and other venues include Carney’s, Carney’s Other Room, Martini Beach, and Cape May Stage’s Robert Shackleton Playhouse. The line-up, which
will be finalized and announced on the festival’s official website (www.exit0jazzfest. com) on July 5, is impressive thus far, including such established acts as Ben Williams & Sound Effect, Christian McBride & Inside Straight, Claudia Acuna and DJ Soul Sister, and Henry Cole’s Afrobeat Collective. Also, there will be a collaboration between the festival and the Center For Community Arts for a tribute to Cape May’s late, great George Mesterhazy And of course, there is the not-tobe-missed headliner, iconic three-time Grammy Award winner and seven goldrecord holder, Ramsey Lewis, who will perform with his Electric Band as part of their Sun Goddess tour. Despite the storied line-up, this is not your grandfather’s jazz festival. And don’t
ask if Michael if this is a re-tread of the ghosts of jazz festivals past. “This is not a revamp or a revisit,” Michael tells us. “This is a whole new ball game.” Talking of pedigrees, Kline’s impresses as well. Relocated to Cape May after Katrina, he had a career in both concert production and in radio in The Big Easy. (And he’s got that radio voice, too.) Spy Boy represents jazz musicians on both the national and international levels. So how does it feel to be bringing this event to Cape May? The Pennsylvania native tells us that his was “one of those families that piled in the car and drove to the Jersey shore every summer. I can’t think of a better place, or a better time of year, to bring this festival than Cape May.” Tickets are already on sale for the festival on the city’s website , and Congress Hall is offering special packages to include both lodging and tickets to the concerts. And to cap it off, Kline tells us he has a “special surprise scheduled for Sunday afternoon. But that’s all I’m saying now.”
PARTING SHOT We like to think we’re pretty vigilent fact-checkers, but due to a communication
snafu between our staff, a pretty big typo got past us in last week’s Talk of the Town story on parking. City Clerk Louise Cummiskey never told us that parking tickets generate $900,139 a year, but that they generate $9,139. We apologize for that, folks. Until next time, here’s hoping your week is ticket-free!

The Inside Scoop On City Hall
W
A user’s guide to Cape May City Council meetings... by Diane Stopyra
HO would want to be on the beach when you can attend a Cape May City Council meeting? Okay, not us. But we went to last Tuesday’s meeting anyway, because it is our duty to report the news. And it is your duty to read it (yes, it is!). So, without further adeiu, here’s what happened at City Hall on June 19. 7:03: Your reporter finds two sticky quarters at the bottom of her car’s cup holder, feeds the meter, and rushes into City Hall. She arrives just as the Pledge of Allegiance is concluding. 7:04: Mayor Edward Mahaney — wearing a sandy-colored suit with a greenish hue, baby blue button-up, and navy tie — addresses late agenda items considered for action. Tonight, it’s Resolution 158, which calls for a meeting not open to the public regarding a possible acquisition of land on Lafayette Street. 7:06: Mayor Mahaney says tonight’s ordinance for second reading and consideration for adoption is —drum roll, please — Ordinance 353-2012, approving a deed notice for block 1061 on lot 139 in Cape May City. “This is more
a formality, housekeeping detail for the city,” he says. City Solicitor Anthony Monzo — wearing a charcoal suit and striped tie — explains that there is a small section of the public works yard that “has been contaminated.” (With what, he doesn’t say, which leaves your reporter’s imagination running wild. West Nile? There are a LOT of mosquitoes here.) “The best solution is to restrict a section, probaly 400 square feet of land on that property, for any residential use,” he says. But since the city has no intention of ever allowing residential use there, it’s really no biggie.
7:09: Mayor Mahaney says we’re now entering Deputy Mayor Jack Wichterman’s favorite part of the meeting… resolutions! Wichterman — looking very summery in an orangish-reddish polo with light kakhi pants — says Resoultion 148 has to do with an escrow account “which will be dealing with COAH.” (That’s Council on Affordable Housing, folks.) He asks City Manager Bruce MacLeod — looking less summery in a dark suit — if he can tell us “what’s going on with this thing.” Bruce says he’d be glad to, and that it’s simply a matter of housekeeping. (So much housekeeping today! Your reporter pictures members of council sweeping city hall and vacuuming the auditorium.) “This is a followup to part of the COAH rules and regulations which require a dedicated escrow account for the depositing of all funds that are collected by the city for the purpose of meeting COAH requirements as well as for the dispersement of those funds, when those dollars are spent on the COAH and affordable housing program

The Inside Scoop On City Hall ? From Page 45 within the city of Cape May,” MacLeod says. It’s required to be a three-way agreement between the city, the designated banking institution — which in this case is Sturdy — and the State of New Jersey Council on Affordable Housing, so once the city adopts this, it will be signed off on by all three entities. Wichterman says that “the last time COAH came down here, and they told us what our number was, I asked them where they got it from and nobody knew… so I don’t get too upset about that.” Take that, Trenton. 149 is a resolution approving the new collective bargaining agreement with local 59 police PBA. “It takes us through December of 2014,” Wichterman says. 150 is a resolution approving the contract for Bruce MacLeod, “who does a fine job,” Wichterman says. This will also take him through December 31 of 2014. His raises will be 1 percent a year for the next four years, “so it’s very reasonable.” And in case anyone in the audience was doubting, he adds, “And you do a good job.” 151 is a resolution to approve all the liquor licenses within the city for this year. “I can hear a loud ‘Thank god’ out in the audience,” Wichterman says. What? From where/who?!
152 is a resolution mandating the use of the national incident management system, which sounds very important. “This is boiler plate; we approve it every year,” Wichterman says. It reads: “Whereas in homeland security the president directed the Secretary of Department of Homeland Security to develop and administer a national incident management system, which would provide a consistent nationwide approach for federal, state, local and tribal governments to work together more effectively and efficiently to prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from domestic incidents regardless of cause, size or complexity.” Wichterman has lost your reporter at the mention of tribal governments, as she can’t help but picture herself attending a council meeting where every-

one wears coconut bras and loincloths. 153 releases the maintenance bond “for the bicycle shop over here on Lafayette Street.” There is now a pause during which Councilmember Bill Murray clears his throat. 154 approves a contract for the police chief, “who also does a heck of a fine job within the city.” Your reporter, sans a contract from the city, is now starting to feel left out. 156 A and B are for “paying our bills” 157 has to do with “extending the terms of people on the boards within the city whose terms were going to expire on June 30,” since the elections for city council were moved from May to November. 158 is for that meeting regarding of the purchase of your reporter’s secret parking spot — we mean the Lafayette Street Park — that the mayor mentioned earlier. 7:20: John Campbell, State Delegate for the Local PBA representing Cape May Police officers, takes the podium. The mayor asks him to turn so that he’s facing the audience. Campbell says he’s been involved in contract negotiation “for about 17 years now and I would have to say this was probably the most difficult and frustrating contract due to today’s economy but I think in the end we hammered out a deal

The Inside Scoop On City Hall ? From Page 46 that was responsible for the taxpayers, the city, and the officers of Cape May.” He says he appreciates the “professional and harmonious relationship that we’ve always had.” Hmm… harmonious, minus the little picket line outside of Convention Hall the police hosted, your reporter is assuming. Then, Campbell thanks the council. 7:21: The Mayor thanks Campbell. 7:22: Reports are received by the clerk. These are: the monthly report from the city of Cape May’s fire department, the construction permit activity report, the assessors monthly report, the monthly report of tax collections, the Shade Tree Commission meeting minutes, and the Cape May Police Department’s monthly report. 7:23: These are accepted! 7:24: The mayor asks for any unfinished business. No one has any. How nice for them! 7:25: The mayor asks for any new business. City Attorney Anthony Monzo asks if he might give an update on the Sewell Point tract situation. “I’ll try to be brief,” he says, “however this case goes back probably to the 1950s.” Uh-oh. We reported on this a few weeks ago, but were unable to reach the City Attorney for a
comment before press time. (Not his fault… we played a serious game of phone tag.) So here are the Cliff Notes from what he had to say: “Contrary to what has been quoted and disseminated in the media,” he says, “the city has never supported development on that tract, and it’s made several attempts to acquire the entire tract.” When he was appointed solicitor in 1999, the case was several years into litigation. “Unfortunately, it was at the height of the market,” and the city didn’t have the authority to spend what was being asked. The predecessors to East Cape May Associates, the current owners of the tract, acquired land on both sides of Pittsburgh Avenue. They ultimately developed Village Green on the west side and for the east side they reached an agreement which required the city to pay for all the infrastructure costs for the running of sewer lines, and the
putting in of roads and a base coat of asphalt. “It was at a time the city was looking for development and ratables and welcomed the development in East Cape May.” But there’s more… This decision was challenged in court, but the decision was upheld. In the late 1980s, the East Cape May Associates sought approval to develop the entire tract, which enabled them to put in 366 single family homes. It was approved, so the applicant then applied for a CAFRA permit, and this was turned down. Litigation ensued. By 1999, there was a denial “and the owner of the property was seeking to be compensated for the entire tract.” The Department of Environmental Protection “tried to resolve the case by making what’s called a section 22b offer.” (This was a section of the Freshwater Wetlands Protection Act which could enable the state DEP to offer some limited development.) The developer rejected that offer and argued that the DEP did not have the authority to make it; they challenged it in court and won, the case was appealed, and the decision was upheld. Still more… Ultimately, in 2003, there was courtordered mediation. For five years, Cape May,

although not a part of the litigation, was viewed “as a necessary party in negotiation.” Throughout those five years, “everyone on council supported a resolution that would have minimal impact on the environment, would have the least amount of development, and would absolve the city of its responsibility to pay for all the infrastructure cost.” The agreement that was reached in 2009 was approved by council “in front of a packed room.” Everyone supported it, including the city’s environmental commission, the American Literal Society, and everyone in town, because it was a good settlement, and it saved the city’s taxpayers the cost of the infrastructure, preserved as much of the tract as possible, and limited the development to 25 percent of the tract.” There were two conditions of approval, Monzo says: 1. That the city would have to approve a new zoning ordinance that would accommodate development; and 2. That the developer would have to receive, if applicable, a permit from the Army Corp of Engineers. “Contrary to what’s been reported,” Monzo says, “The Army Corp does not have jurisdiction over all wetlands in the state of New Jersey.” Although they have not yet rejected and denied the permit, the Army Corp has issued a letter to the developers stating that because a significant amount of this tract is uplands (50 percent according to Monzo) The Army Corp would likely not issue a permit. Still going… If denied, and there is no appeal, the next step would be for the developers to sit down with the DEP and the Literal Society and determine what part of the tract can be developed, “so it’s going to be basically back to the drawing board.” Monzo adds that of the 4.4 million dollars the city was committed to, “only $200,000 was coming from the city money…” and that, without the deal the city
had forged, “the obligation to provide lower income housing would have fallen on the taxpayers. The end. 7:31: Time for new business from the city manager. He says council will be discussing single-stream recycling at their next meeting, which “seems to be the direction the county would like to move.” He adds that the stone removal project has concluded. The city had envisioned removing 3,000 tons of stone. However, without receiving the final counts, it was “somewhere in excess of 525.” He adds that there are still a few deposits we may have to work on after the summer season is over unless mother nature takes care of it.” Also in regard to beach replenishment, the City Manager says the city has been invited to participate in the Lower Cape May Meadows project again, although we’re going back to hydrolic dredging, as opposed to the backpassing “demolition” of last year. (Whoops! A little Freudian slip there… he meant to say “demonstration.”) It will cost the city $62,403.82 to participate. 7:35: Several members of council shuffle their papers. 7:38: Wichterman says he voted against this replenishment project, and that he’s still against it, but he was outnumbered. He also says that he met with the Taxpayers’ Association to discuss the state of his negotiations with Trenton regarding the money that Cape May citizens have to pay to support the regional school, despite the number of kids from here who attend. His plan of action is to meet with other municipalities who have similar problems, because there is “strength in numbers.” 7:40: Councilmember Bill Murray — wearing khaki pants, a pale gree short-sleeve button-up, and a brown belt — asks MacLeod to look into what can be done about the tourists who are crossing the street at non-designated crossing areas. “We love our tourists, and we want them to be safe,”

he says. Your reporter loves the tourists, too, just not when they cross the street without looking both ways! 7:43: Time for the mayor’s comments. He says how glad he is that the city and the police are maintaining their “harmonious, cordial working relationship.” And he thanks John Campbell for keeping the unit together. He says this contract has “sustainability wedges,” meaning future councils won’t have an impossible time trying to come up with contracts. He thanks Campbell for working with Council on this. 7:44: Campbell thanks the mayor. 7:46: The Mayor thanks Campbell again. 7:47: Your reporter feels thankful that all this thanking must be coming to an end soon. 7:48: The Mayor congratulates the City Manager on his contract extension. “When we asked you to take over the position, we faced a major set of challenges on numerous fronts,” he says. “We had to reorganize the city manager office, we had to stabliieze the city’s finances, we were faced with a convention hall that was promised but not delivered, and we were facing the need to update all of our planning documents...” Then he thanks MacLeod. 7:49: The Mayor encourages everyone to take advantage of the marketing “spree” going on, and all the printed material advertising the wide range of events taking place at Convention Hall, including a performance by the Cape May Diamonds on Saturday night. 7:52: It’s time for the public portion! Tim Walsh, wearing blue jeans, a polo, and brown loafers, says he came to speak about why backpassing is a bad idea, but “I guess that’s a moot point now” since the council has decided against it. Then he proceeds to speak out against backpassing, anyway. Then he says the beach “boxes” outside of the Montreal
seem very big. “I don’t have a problem with them selling stuff, but they’ve created these buildings, and they’re probably the most unattractive things on the beach.” Ouch. 7:58: John Cooke, President of the Chamber of Commerce, wearing a baby blue button-up, khaki pants, a black belt, black watch, and glasses, says he “just wanted to thank the members of council” for a great partnership that allowed for a successful HarborFest. And boy was it good. The crab cakes especially. 8:02 — Shaine Meier thanks Jack Wichterman for his hard work sorting out the unfair burden on Cape May taxpayers regarding the local school. More thanking! 8:05: George — wearing.... suspenders and who cares what else because we LOVE suspenders — stumbles a little when he stands up from his post filming the meeting, and the Mayor jokes that he should not fall over on his way up to the podium. “I recovered from most things that most old geezers my age die from,” he says back. “But I won’t try to stand on one foot up there.” (Reporter’s note: He doesn’t.) George tells council says the city needs to acquire as much open space as possible (“That’s as valuable as where the buildings are”), that the city should not build on wetlands (“The land is full of water, and when you put a heavy building on it, that building is likely to sink”), and that people should be able to view live streams of events at Convention Hall via their computers (“That’s money well spent”). 8:07: The Mayor thanks George. 8:09: The meeting is over.

The Movie Column
W
By Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival
HEN you’re heading into a relationship movie such as Lola Versus, you have to be careful. At any moment, it could turn schmaltzy, dumb, or painfully unrealistic. Lola Versus, a film from newcomer Daryl Wein, doesn’t take any of those turns. It stays fresh, smart, and it’s humor subtle. Also it is probably one of the more realistic portraits of 20-somethings (turning 30-somethings) you’re going to get in theaters these days. So what happened? Lola is a woman on the brink of her 30th birthday — and she seems to be on top of the world. She is pursuing a doctorate, living in the Big Apple, and dating a great guy. When that guy gives her a ring, well isn’t that just the icing on the cake? When the wedding plans get so heated that he breaks it off, the cake crumbles. Kudos to Wein for providing that whole story BEFORE the credits! What happens after is Lola’s working through issues, dating new guys, dealing with her crazy friends.
Greta Gerwig shines in the smart, funny indie romantic comeday Lola Versus So what makes Lola Versus below average? You can’t blame the lead actress, Greta Gerwig. She is as fun to watch on screen as any blockbuster queen. She has a great delivery, knows and loves her character to such an extent as you start to love her too. The supporting cast does an excellent job, especially Zoe Lister Jones (who also co-wrote), Hamish Linkletter (best known as the brother of Julia LouisDreyfus in the terrible but lingering-in-
reruns TV series The New Adventures of Old Christine), veteran Bill Pullman, and Oscar nominee Debra Winger (free passes to the Cape May Film Festival, October 19-21, for the first person to email capemayfilm@ hotmail.com with any two of the three films Winger was nominated for). This is a good project from a pack of young people, mostly newcomers, who have truly done an excellent job producing an indie film that is watchable and rentable. But unlike its production and acting team that have a solid future in the film industry — this film never quite knows what it wants to be when it grows up. Despite fresh dialogue and decent acting, it dances on the fringes of the Whiny Trail so much that it never takes the road to being the masterpiece it could be. So put it on your rental list if you like a decent coming of age, romantic comedy. Now if you want to see some excellent films made by young people, join us this Friday, June 29, 7pm for the FREE world premiere of our Film Camp f licks at West Cape May Borough Hall!

The Exit Zero Bouquet Ambush
«
EACH week, Exit Zero ambushes an unsuspecting and deserving citizen with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from one of our fine local florists. All you have to do is answer a question or two by our roving photographer, Gabi Urda. This week’s recipients are Bill Higby and Melinda Achwartz of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, who were ambushed on the Washington Street Mall. What are you doing here? We’re on vacation from our jobs as engineers at Westinghouse. What are you up to today? We are looking for a good place to get some ice cream. When is the last time you got some flowers? [Melinda] The last time I got flowers was in April. I got them from Bill when I started my new job. PHOTO BY GABI URDA... FLOWERS BY CAPE WINDS

The Answer Lady
T
Wise answers to perplexing questions
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady So....can people change? — Wondering Dear Outspoken Oh dear — that is what the Answer Lady would call a loaded question. There is an old expression that a tiger can’t change his stripes, meaning that people can’t change what they fundamentally are — a chronic liar or cheater, for instance (or a serial monogamist, for that matter). The Answer Lady is not sure she buys into this theory, believing it’s more accurate to say that people don’t — or won’t — change unless and until they have to do so. Sometimes we fall into habits which are challenging to break, and our lives become a series of patterns. We get used to certain things, we feel that this is the life for us, and it doesn’t even occur to us to change. Not to mention that change
is frightening for most people. For instance, if Lucky Bones ever takes the pulled-pork nachos off the menu, the Answer Lady will be at a loss as to what to order when she dines there (although it would be refreshing to have her dining companions not eating from her plate). This does not mean that the Answer Lady would be doomed to never dine at Lucky Bones again; it simply means that she would have to go with the Skip Jack pizza instead. If the Answer Lady has learned anything in her vast number of
years on this planet, it’s that people have an astounding capacity for change, assuming they are motivated enough. Drinkers become teetotalers, addicts get clean, players settle down, immature brats become mature adults. (And vice-versa.) Although, according to her unofficial research, the Answer Lady believes that foot fetishes are somewhat permanent. Dear Answer Lady When I was growing up, chewing gum in public was frowned upon. I’m assuming that times have changed, since it seems that everywhere I go, people are chomping on gum like so many cows with cud. Please comment. — Old School Dear Kidding Hmm. The Answer Lady is wondering if you are suggesting that we all enjoy our gum solely within the confines of our own homes. Since the whole point of chewing gum is to freshen one’s breath, presumably for the sake of the other people who are subjected to it, certainly people can and should enjoy gum in the company of others. Quietly.

What’s Your Story?
Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here? What’s your name and where are you from? My name is Patrick Hogan and I am from West Palm Beach, Florida. What brings you to Cape May? A cousin got married at the Stone Harbor Yacht Club. My parents rented a place there for this little extravaganza for a week, so I decided to take a day trip to Cape May. What were you up to when we interrupted you? I was arguing with my friends here about what to do today. It is a little hard to find something fun yet responsible. The theme of this week’s issue is firecrackers. Do you have any memorable stories about firecrackers? They can be dangerous but also very fun. My friend accidentally placed a firework upside down, and then he set it off. Instead of shooting into the sky like it should have, it just exploded right there on the ground. People were jumping into the pool like crazy. Nobody was physically hurt, just their pride. Interview by Caroline Wenzel PHOTOGRAPH BY GABI URDA

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
ADORE fireworks, though I demand advance warning of their firing, otherwise I can suffer flashbacks and run amok. But when warned, I can make sure I leave my swordstick and pistols at home, and brace myself for the delightful concussions, the flashes in the sky and the smell of gunpowder. Actually, much the same sensory experiences and physical effects can be had after a half dozen Dark and Stormys at Martini Beach, but I digress. I always make sure I have a few tons of top-grade gunpowder in the basement, and a mile or two of fusing, plus an acre of waxed cloth and glue, so I can prepare suitable fireworks for any and all holidays that come my way, or repel incursions from Wildwood. I used to attempt, each year, to beat my previous record for the size and explosive power of a rocket, until one fateful day I stood back and lit the fuse on a beauty that was only slightly smaller than an Apollo Rocket, and packed to bursting with pyrotechnics. As I watched the fuse hiss, racing
towards the rocket, I saw the crowd pull back in fear, and sanity returned and I saw, in an out-of-body moment, my tiny self standing just ten feet away from enough explosives to land a man on the moon and then continue on to Mars without pausing. I turned and in slow motion, or so it seemed, sprinted for the storm cellar, Young Albert close at my heels. I recall hearing screams then the world turned white and I was lying on my back on the roof in utter silence, watching the rocket soar to the heavens. I
wondered, in a state of remarkable calm, how high I had set the main explosives to detonate. As the seconds passed, I allowed myself to think that perhaps the beast would not explode until way out over the ocean, or to cause less harm to the world, above Philly. And then the sky lit up and the hand of God pushed down on my chest, firmly pressing me through the roof of the Mansion, down past the guest quarters on the top floor, into and quickly out of the main dining room (dragging a tablecloth and place settings for 40 people with me), through the ceiling of MrsD’Catur’s bathroom and into the warm bath that had been run for her relaxation after her evening game of snooker. The concussion peeled the roof off the Mansion, and so from my bath I had the perfect view of the biggest and best fireworks display to grace this nation. Sadly, my insurers and the police have insisted that I limit myself to sparklers and firecrackers, but I have some special treats in mind this year, dear friends, just you wait.

Activity Of The Week
W
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Fire Works.
HILE Fourth of July fireworks light up the night, you can spark some extra excitement at home. Gather around your chiminea or fire pit, and kindle some summer memories. As Thoreau said, “fire is the main comfort of the camp, whether in summer or winter.” Make your own camp more comfortable with a chiminea, a Mexican-style firepot with a fat base and a short smoke stack. The opening in the base lets you add wood and clean out ashes — or toast marshmallows. The clay chimineas are probably the prettiest, but the metal ones are sturdier. Swain’s Hardware has a catalog from which you can choose. Safety first — be sure to have a fire extinguisher handy, and place your chiminea in a safe area, away from hanging branches, clotheslines full of beach towels, and the house. Have the hose ready in case a floating ember causes trouble. Choose the right type of wood —don’t go for a long-burning hardwood unless you plan to stay up all night waiting for it to burn out. If you can get some
pinon pine to burn, you can even keep the bugs away — your marshmallows may taste a little funny, but that’s okay. And make sure the fire is out before you turn your back on it, or before the wine starts flowing too freely. Let the boy or girl scouts in the group help you build the fire — they’re likely to know more than you remember about the
three basic elements (fuel, flame and air), the use of kindling, and the best shape for your fire’s base — the tepee is the most popular. Your guests will be drawn in before the fire even gets going, as everyone offers advice. Who doesn’t love the chance to poke at a fire? (Send the little kids away to look for marshmallow toasting sticks.) Summer circles around the fire spark conversations. As darkness falls, conversation heats up, made freer by the semidarkness. There might even be a flicker of romance. Big kids volunteer to toast more marshmallows than anyone will eat. Little kids, scrubbed clean in the outdoor shower, can pull up a seat and let their hair dry and listen to the grownups talk. Maybe someone will bring out a guitar and start a singalong. Later, everyone will fall asleep with the lingering smell of smoke, and years from now, that smell will conjure up this summer night in their memory. In Cape May, we’ll enjoy the 9pm fireworks from Congress Hall, but sometimes you need your own little celebration. Strike up the chiminea to add warmth to your backyard. Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923
«
JAKE is a six-year old Cockapoo who is sweet and playful, was always kept up on vaccines, regular vet visits, and grooming. He is very friendly, knows basic commands and appears trainable to learn others. Jake can go to a home with cats, dogs and older children. He’ll require some training as he does have accidents. He does sleep in his crate so some of the work is already done. The adoption fee is $35.
«
PENNY is waiting at the shelter for someone to take her to a forever home. She used to live with other dogs, so would probably get along with others. She is a nervous girl, and gets anxious when touched, but is learning to love. She is sweet, she just needs time to get to know you. Penny knows some commands, but would do best in a home with older kids, if any, and doesn’t do well with cats. The adoption fee is $95.
«
AUBREY is a very sweet young gal who loves to be around people. She’s very energetic, has lots of enthusiasm, and will need lots of exercise and stimulation. Due to her exhuberance, we recommend she a family with older children and a home where she will get the proper training she needs. If you have the patience and time needed to train Aubrey, please stop by to meet her today. You’ll be happy you did. The adoption fee is $95.

HERMAN is waiting at the animal shelter for someone to take him to a forever home. He is a distinguished older gentleman, and would love to live out the rest of his days in a loving home. He loves to be pet, and he would make an ideal lap cat. Stop by the shelter and give Herman a second chance. The adoption fee is $8.
«
SWIRL, along with siblings Sally, Sinbad, and Sailor were brought in after being rescued from a hoarder. They were all just a couple of months old when they arrived and have fared very well here. They’re fun-loving, sweet, lovable, and very playful. All that’s missing in their life is YOU. Adopt one — or two! The adoption fee is $70.

Bird Droppings
C
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
OMMONLY, this section of mulched and reconstituted pine plantation is dedicated to birds. This time it’s dedicated to a different species. Our species — people. As a species, we have a great deal going for us: intelligence; the ability to see cause and effect relationships between things; a sense of responsibility rooted in, among together things, self interest. The capacity to defer immediate gain for greater future rewards. Yep —we’re a success story. This is why I’m amazed when I note members of our species acting in ways that are contrary to these evolutionary advantages. Take people who let their dogs run unleashed on beaches where beach nesting birds have established. They know they shouldn’t. There are signs at regular intervals warning about the presence of nesting birds. But some people just let their dogs run anyway. I’m puzzled because I’m not sure I understand it. Maybe people let their dogs run loose because they don’t believe the signs. They
don’t see any birds so they don’t see any harm. I can understand that. As a species we’re bombarded with signs telling us things. Some things make sense; some don’t. Take those CAUTION HIGHWAY WORK ZONE signs. They make sense when highway repairs are ongoing. But how much credence do they have weeks after work has been completed (except for
the taking down of the signs)? The signs posted around bird colonies ARE to be believed. If you don’t actually see nesting terns and plovers, that’s because they’re cryptically colored to remain undetected on open sand. They are also habituated to a pattern of movement by people who walk up and down the beach. They save themselves a lot of energy being still and they do their eggs and young a service by staying right there, in the colony, protecting their genetic dowry. Dogs can’t read and, as direct descendants of wolves, are hot-wired to chase and kill things. Even the mere distraction of adult birds by unleashed dogs can be fatal to young (who are even harder to see than adults). An adult bird will try to distract your dog while the chick runs in another direction — the perfect scenario for a hungry ghost crab to grab the chick and drag it down a burrow before adults can react. Ghost crab scores, you and your dog get credited with an assist. How’s that

Bird Droppings ? From Page 111 for a cause and effect relationship? I think people who run their dogs on beaches when and where they aren’t supposed to are oblivious to the consequences. Now you know it does real harm, causes unnecessary disruption to living things, and diminishes the rich tapestry of your cherished shore environment. Now you have a dilemma: you know it causes harm, but you like running your dogs on the beach. It’s gratifying for them and for you, probably something you’ve always done, particularly in winter when there is nothing to be harmed. You know, like after nesting season is over. Here’s where the human capacity to defer immediate gratification for greater gain comes in. If you let your dog run loose on the beach it’s going to give you momentary pleasure, like spooning a pint of ice cream into your mouth. But if you leash your dog, giving birds a chance to raise their young, you’ve helped ensure Cape May’s beach environment will always be rich in sights and sounds. Like walking down the beach, and knowing that you, and your ice cream unsullied figure, are being admired. You like to be admired, right? By the way, nice
A Piping Plover trying to divert attention away from its young Robert Lego dog. There’s a long stretch of beach in North Cape May where you and your dog can run for miles, and free parking (and free beach). Not sure what nesting beach birds I’m referring to? Head over to the Cape May Bird Observatory - THE place for all your nature needs. Ask the staff what birds are on the beach, and what beaches you shouldn’t let Bruno take a run on. 5/6: Benefit For Connor Proud At The Bayview Inn
«
Five hundred tickets were sold to a beefand-beer benefit held at the Bayview Inn in support of nine-year-old Connor Proud, the son of Dawn and Ed Proud of North Cape May. Connor struggles with Charge Syndrome, which brings many complications, including heart defects and stunted growth. He can only see out of one eye, and he suffers from severe hearing loss. Already, Connor has undergone 30 surgeries, 20 of them major, and he’s endured countless two-hour drives to visit his many doctors. Once a year, he must receive cat scans to make sure a cancerous cyst behind his ear has not grown back. All donations may be made out to The Proud Family Fund, and mailed to 201 Apple Blossom Drive in North Cape May.
