Subscriber Of The Week

Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Charlie Henderson of Newtown Square, Pennsylvania. How long have you been coming to Cape May? We’ve been visiting Cape May since 1988. Who are you normally with? My wife, and sometimes, one of the six children and five grandchildren. Favorite thing about Cape May? That’s there’s no “boardwalk.” Least favorite thing? I still haven’t found a least favorite thing about Cape May. Favorite restaurants? We have lots of them, but if I guess if I have to pick a couple, I especially like The Merion Inn and Tisha’s. Favorite place to stay? That would have to be our place on Madison Avenue. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? I would definitely expand George’s Place restaurant. Favorite thing about Exit Zero? All the local news — you keep me up to date on what’s going on. Least favorite thing about Exit Zero? I haven’t found a least favorite thing about Exit Zero. What’s your T-shirt size? My T-shirt size is large.

Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Kate Chadwick. If you think you know what establishment this is, you could win a gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter at facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

Quotes Of The Week

Random Factoid

“Fiction was invented the day Jonas arrived home and told his wife that he was three days late because he had been swallowed by a whale.” — Gabriel Garcia Marquez “A whale is harpooned only when it spouts.” — Henry Hillman “The whale is endangered, while the ant continues to do just fine.”— Bill Vaughn

THE blue whale’s heart weighs approximately 1,300 lbs and only beats about ten times per minute. (By comparison, the human heart beats at least 70 times per minute.) The tongue of the blue whale weighs more than the average elephant, and it is large enough for fifty people to stand on it.

Cocktail Recipe Of The Week... The Blue Whale EVERY week we present a cocktail based on the issue’s theme. With this being the Whale Issue, we figured we might have a problem finding something that worked, but guess what, there IS a whale-related cocktail. Not everyone loves a blue-colored drink but, for those who do, we present the Blue Whale, just for you!

Ingredients 1 part vodka 1 part Blue Curacao liqueur 1 part orange juice 1 part pineapple juice 1 part sweet and sour mix Pour ingredients over ice and mix in a shaker. Strain into a tall glass, and serve.

Talk Of The Town

Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

Root Of The Problem

WE’VE been hearing stories about some pretty upset business owners on the Washington Street Mall, so we went to the Monday meeting of BID — the Business Improvement District — to get the scoop. We listened as Pilot House owner Deidre Hineline made recommendations about about how best to market the mall (we love the idea of banner plane advertising in neighboring shore towns), before getting to the contentious bit — a discussion over alleged restaurant seating violations. “I am concerned as to why [Stewart’s Root Beer] has been operating with more seats than their mercantile liscence allows for,” Hineline told the meeting at City Hall. She explained that the restaurant’s permit allows for only 48 seats, but that the franchise is set up for 120. “This is unjust,” she said. “Other businesses are paying dearly for extra seating.” (We asked how much more, and were told that just four additional seats costs a business $5,000 a year.) Plus, Hineline says, when these business have lines, hungry customers make their way to Stewart’s, where there is no such wait. “They’re blatantly breaking the law,” she said. City Manager Bruce MacLeod explained that Stewart’s had been issued a warning. “Did we expect them to heed the warning? I won’t answer that question.” And when this warning was, in fact, not heeded, the business was issued a summons to appear in court. MacLeod said he didn’t know when this court date might be, so we asked if it’s possible it might not happen until the end of the season. “Technically,” he said, “I guess it could be possible.” In the meantime, he

explained, Stewart’s applied for a variance for additional seating. “I don’t know that I can walk in there and close a business down,” he said. But can’t the city be issuing daily fines, we wondered? “The ordinance does allow for fines to be assessed on a daily basis,” he said, “but that’s up to the court.” Hinelinee said that if Stewart’s is allowed to continue operating illegally, it sends a message that businesses on the mall “can do whatever they want” and that the people who suffer are the ones who follow the rules. “The Pilot House considered extra seating at one point,” she said, “but we decided it was cost prohibitive. If the city allows this variance, that’s just injustice.” Steve Smarro of Madame’s Port added, “It smells.” Members of the board, including Sue Tischler of Kaleidoscope and Joanne Klineburger of Great White Shark, questioned whether a BID meeting is the appropriate forum to address these concerns. “If the court decides to issue fines,” Tischler said, “there’s your vindication.” Pam Smarro of Madame’s Port disagreed. “I believe the BID should be involved, because we’re constantly being told that we’re an arm of the city government. We work hard to make sure the city looks good and, in turn, they should make sure that all members of BID are following the law, and that there’s equality among all members.”

Get Thee To The Gallery

THE pieces on display at SOMA NewArt Gallery’s show will take your breath away (no hyperbole; they’re that good), so we chatted with the folks behind the art. First,

there’s Harriett Sosson, owner of Poor Richard’s Inn, who came to Cape May via New York. “I’d been in Manhattan for 12 years,” she told us. “And it’s so easy to be making art in that city for the money more than anything else, because you have to pay the rent. I thought I’d like New York better if I could spend the summers in Cape May, where I had vacationed in the past. I found the Poor Richard’s Inn, which was inexpensive because it had been on fire — caved in ceilings and charred walls — and I ended up moving here year-round.” That was the 70s. Harriett does a great deal of collage work. The collection on dispaly at SOMA — “On the Way to Cape May” — includes old photographs that have been layered over with well-known classical images. (Think Bacchus, the Roman God of Wine, sitting on a Cape May porch.) “The first thign I do is take the photograph to Heidi Cummings at Inkwell and have her transfer it onto archival paper. And then I paint on them with oil paint; I’m not big on that watercolor stuff.” As for the greater meaning? “They don’t always have to tell a story all of the time,” Harriett told us. “The pieces sometimes make one quick statement, rather than anything complicated which has to be unraveled.” We asked Harriett if there is one piece of which she is most proud, she said it would be difficult to choose which one of her “children” she likes best. Which begs the question: if an artist feels so connected to her paintings that they become like extensions of herself, is it hard to say goodbye when all of you lovely people run over to SOMA and

At SOMA NewArt Gallery, there’s a show of three artists that we recommend you get along to see. Above is Sean Taylor’s irresistible painting of Morey’s Piers amusement park in Wildwood and, below, Harriett Sosson puts a fun spin on local history. The two are joined by John Borrero.

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 scoop them all up? “I used to have a studio in Cape May Point,” she told us, “and I had the experience of following a fire truck there once, realizing it was heading to my own property. My studio burned to the ground, and I trudged throught the ashes, realizing I’d lost everything that was inside. So, I’ve learned not to hold on. If someone buys my painting, I like the idea that this someone is going to care for it now.”

And as for the way people view her work? “I like to think the paintings offer a different slant of Cape May, or add a little texture. This is a beautiful place, and getting more so all the time.” Then there’s Sean Taylor, whose collection — “The Boxer and The Beauty Queen” — “is an investigation into the causes and effects of desire, illusion and the mystery of Beauty.” The piece we’re most excited about is the 10-foot (10-foot!) painting called “Observation” that’s been six years (six

years!) in the making. It depicts a woman looking to the sky, where there are baby angels flying, who two men in the picture don’t seem to notice. “It’s meant to be open to interpretation,” he said. “I don’t want to lead people too much.” There will also be a great deal of landscape paintings on display, including some seascapes and one of the amusement park in Wildwood. “I move back and forth between landscape and figure, and all kinds of stuff in between. I’m just trying to capture visceral beauty,” he told us. And Sean is extremely good at just that, thanks largely to a stranger he once met in a café. “In 1997,” he said, “I was a bit lost. I told this man I didn’t know what my passion was, but that I’d always had this idea I’d like to paint. He told me I could do it, and I ended up taking some free art classes in Philadelphia. Eventually, I went to the Academy.” Here, Sean did so well, the school sent him abroad to study in Venice, which is where he saw the 1566 painting — Titian’s “The Annunciation” — that would inspire “Observation”. “My work is meant to be challenging to the viewer,” he told us, “and I think that’s important. I like artwork that has legs. Artwork that can sustain lasting, continual meaning.” Last but not least, there’s John Borrero, who’s presenting “Mythology, Fables and Fairy Tales”. His pieces — some paintings and some sculptures made from

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 14 found objects — is unlike anything else that’s been done in Cape May — or at least that’s what we’ve been hearing from everyone we know who’s attended the show. “I follow where the painting leads me,” he says. We especially love his “Yemeya” piece... Trust us, you’re going to want to check it out for yourself. You’ll be glad you did. The show runs until July 29, and the gallery, located in the Carpenter Square Mall, is open daily from 10am to 10pm.

Sing Me A Song YOU say you can’t wait until March for your singer-songwriter fix? Thanks to Singer Songwriter Cape May and the folks at Congress Hall, you don’t have to. Starting on July 11, and running each Wednesday night through August 29, The Boiler Room will host a Singer Songwriter Cape May Showcase — a summer warm-up, if you’ll forgive the pun, in the oh-so-cool Boiler Room. We spoke with Myra Vassian, who is in charge of all things entertainment over at Congress Hall, about this event. “We’ll be warming up the room with an Open Mic, hosted by Don Shaw from 8:30

to 10:30 or so. People love jamming with Don Shaw — he’s a studio musician from Nashville, plays a mean guitar and has a great sense of humor. Then at 11pm, we’ll feature a different Singer Songwriter each week, and they’ll play until about 12:30am or so. We want to build an audience that really appreciates and supports this type of music for a couple of reasons: number one, to promote and support the annual Singer Songwriter Festival in March, and number two, to be able to offer music that isn’t the same old covers that you hear absolutely everywhere — you know? The Boiler Room is a perfect venue for this type of offering. We want our guests to enjoy the warm, coffee house atmosphere we create for them, and we want them to feel up close and personal with the artist in a more intimate setting.” Myra also tells us that many of the featured Singer Songwriters will have CDs available in The Boiler Room for purchase, and that guests will each receive a free CD from one of the past SS Cape May conferences of the past few years while supplies last, of course. Carl Behrens and SS Cape May Friends are first up in the summer line-up on July 11 (keep your EZ close by for a weekly preview), and we chatted with Carl about it.

“Singer Songwriter Cape May started just over five years ago as a way for local artists to get their music out there, and it’s really become huge — we’re up to 18 venues for the 2013 event, with 150 acts and showcases. It’s two days and nights of music, workshops, and keynote speakers. It’s also a great way for us to attract professionals from the industry to town to hear our local talent,” Carl says. “I was really excited to get the call about this summer showcase. I do cover songs, I’m not technically a songwriter, although I like to say that all the songs I perform are originals — they’re just not my originals. I’ve been performing around Cape May for the past few years, and I love it — I just love it.” We asked about who will be joining him onstage on the 11th. “I’ll be playing with John Nesbitt and Dan Barry,” at least as of press time, Carl tells us. And will they be playing separately or together? “Well, we haven’t really nailed that down just yet, and we’re still working on a set list,” Carl says. “But I’m guessing probably a little bit of both.” Carl, who sings and plays both guitar and harmonica, can be found in the meantime performing every Friday

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 16 night from 4:30-9pm at the Rusty Nail. “I have a real job,” says Carl. “But that gig is just the best thing in the world to me.” “I’m very excited for Congress Hall to be able to use this new offering to both promote and support our featured Singer Songwriters, as well as the Singer Songwriter Cape May Festival itself,” Myra says. “That festival is my personal favorite — it’s got such a warm, inviting vibe, and it’s one that I always recommend to anyone that hasn’t attended. We’ve got such a terrific local pool of singer songwriters here in Cape May, and it’s just great to be a part of showcasing their unique talents.”

Whales And Tales

WE’VE noticed that whenever we visit the Whale’s Tale we gravitate towards one section or the other — the front of the store with its amazing collection of jewelry, shells, and other assorted beauteous things; the middle section, stuffed with kids’ stuff; or the back, where we could browse the greeting cards all day long. On this particular visit, we landed in the middle, and immediately started looking

for things to occupy children on a rainy day. Children are a blessing, and having a beach at one’s disposal with which to occupy them is doubly so, but woe to those who are trapped in a beach house with a gaggle of kids in bad weather. We loved the the Melissa & Doug “Beneath The Waves” 48-piece, 4-feet-long f loor puzzle, and the Scratch Magic Sea Life Fun Kit. But we were really taken with the great selection of books (call it an occupational hazard), and whale-specific books at that. We chatted with Lori DeSorbo, who not only holds down the fort in the children’s section, she has done so for the past 30 years. (That’s 30. Three-oh. Impressive.) “When I started here, the children’s section was in the back, and this middle section was actually kitchenware. This was before Love The Cook opened. Around the time that happened, the toys had kind of taken over, so we phased out the kitchen stuff and went with the toys.” Whale’s Tale carries not only great story and picture books, there are sticker books

and even a Big Book of Sea Life To Color book. At $7.95 it costs a bit than something you’d grab at the dollar store, but it’s high-quality and at 140+ pages, it’s priceless in terms of keeping little hands busy. We LOVED the Sounds Of The Wild Ocean by Maurice Pledger, which is not only beautifully illustrated with pop-ups, but has animal sounds. “It’s one of our favorites,” says Lori. And finally, our favorite was The Deep Blue Sea — A Bedtime Shadow Book by Barbara Paulding. This ingenious book features transparent page windows through which you shine a flashlight to cast shadow silhouettes on the bedroom wall of your favorite little one. “I know these work for two reasons. I had a customer buy one for his grandson, who was afraid to turn the lights off at night. He came back to buy a second one, because now the kid can’t wait to turn them off at night. And also, because when they came in, I took one into the closet here with a flashlight to try it for myself.” And this, future retail employees, is how you keep your job for 30 years.

PARTING SHOT It’s easy to forget, while we’re dining in some of Cape May’s excellent restaurants,

that people right here in town are struggling to put food on the table. The Cape May Food Closet, located in the First Presbyterian Church on Hughes and Decatur, is accepting donations of canned and boxed goods, or send your tax-deductible check, payable to Cape May Community Food Closet.

Review of “God of Carnage”

I

Exit Zero checks out Cape May Stage’s most recent offering... by Catherine Dugan

N GOD of Carnage at Cape May Stage, four adults meet to discuss a playground brawl involving their sons. Michael and Veronica Novak invite Alan and Annette Raleigh to their apartment for coffee and a civil discussion, but the evening degenerates into a rum-soaked revelation of their baser instincts. As they expose their inner neanderthals, they also reveal their common humanity, and the audience is treated to a night of raucous laughter. Perched in the carefully arranged living room, they couples appear to be sophisticated, sipping espresso and admiring art books. As Alan Novak, Jason Guy captures the impatience of a lawyer tied to his cell phone. Michelle Eugene, as Annette, looks boardroom ready, but she literally cannot contain her discomfort. Michael and Veronica Novak, played by real-life couple John Viscardi and Fiona Hutchison, are more casually dressed, but equally buttoned up, with Ms Hutchison’s long hair bound in a bun. As the gloves come off, shirttails come untucked, the hair comes down and the physical comedy goes into high gear.

The situation may hit close to home for the audience’s “snowplow” parents — those who seek to remove all obstacles — but the discomfort adds to the humor. As Michael, Viscardi simmers with physicality and the pressure to live up to his wife’s ideals. Like a chef who tries to douse a fire with alcohol, he adds rum at the first sign of violence. Eugene’s Annette recovers from a moment of weakness to go on the attack, shoes off and bra strap hanging. As Alan, Jason Guy talks tough before Annette’s challenge diminishes him and he sits frozen like the Novak’s abandoned hamster. Hutchi-

son’s Veronica clings most tightly to civilization, drawing the biggest laughs as she climbs over scenery, and other actors, to make a point. The actors portray complex relationships with deft timing and looks that contain more poison than the profanity that accompanies them. The Broadway production of God of Carnage won the 2009 Tony Award for Best Play, and critics have likened it to everything from Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? to Punch and Judy. Characters switch alliances, argue opposing viewpoints, and conclude that we are each alone in this world, but small acts of kindness provide hope and keep the laughter bittersweet. God of Carnage by Yasmina Reza, was translated from the French by Christopher Hampton. It runs until August 3, Tuesdays - Sundays at 8pm. Directed by Roy Steinberg, God of Carnage stars Jason Guy, Michelle Eugene, Fiona Hutchison and John Viscardi. Benjamin Loverin is Production Stage Manager, with lighting by Peter Jakubowski, scenery by Robert J. Martin and costumes by Michele E. Sinacore. The play runs for 75 minutes, no intermission, and is recommended for ages 15 and up.

The Movie Column

F

By Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival

IRST, gracious thanks to everyone who attended the world premiere screenings of last Friday’s Film Camp movies! Your continued support sustains the Cape May Film Society (host of the Film Festival and Film Camp). And without the Film Society, where would you get to see great indie films around here? Check out the film camp films at www. youtube.com/capemayfilm. And if you want to get a copy of the films from film camp on DVD, we ask you to make a donation to the film society by visiting www. capemayfilm.org and clicking on any button “Become a Member” (and there are at least 100 such places on the website). We ask for a donation of any amount, but please be as generous as possible. Okay, enough with the PBS speech. Do you like Wes Anderson movies? What’s that? Who is Wes Anderson? His most notable films are The Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009), The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), and Rushmore (1998). And if you said, “Wait a minute, he has more films than that!” that

Kara Haywood and Jared Gilman are the astonishing newcomers in Moonrise Kingdom makes you more of a die-hard fan. And yes, there’s also The Life Aquatic (2004) and The Darjeeling Limited (2007), but sorry, hardcore fan, not many people know these two. And there are others (mostly short films that are not as well-known). And now there is Moonrise Kingdom. I didn’t know Wes Anderson was responsible for The Fantastic Mr. Fox, but once Moonrise Kingdom started, I knew it was his. Anderson says: “I want to try

not to repeat myself. But then I seem to do it continuously in my films. It’s not something I make any effort to do. I feel I get criticized for style over substance, and for details that get in the way of the characters.” Moonrise Kingdom stars Bruce Willis, Tilda Swinton, Ed Norton, and Bill Murray, who seems to gravitate to Anderson films like Johnny Depp to Tim Burton works. The film tells the story of two young teens who are misunderstood troublemakers. They find one another for an adventure that we all are privileged to share. The two absolute newcomers in the lead roles are phenomenal, Kara Haywood and Jared Gilman. They never once break character, and that’s saying something in a film that has as much style as it does substance. This film is Oscar-worthy (seems early to issue an Oscar alert — but hey, if the film warrants it...!). So if you’re not a fan of quirky, off beat, highly- stylized filmmaking, you might not appreciate Moonrise Kingdom — and you’ll miss what is clearly the coolest film this summer.

The Exit Zero Bouquet Ambush

«

EACH week, Exit Zero ambushes an unsuspecting and deserving citizen with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from one of our fine local florists. All you have to do is answer a question or two by our roving photographer, Gabi Urda. This week’s recipient is Howard Leaf of New York City, who was ambushed outside Congress Hall. What are you doing here? I’m just here visiting Cape May for a couple of days. What is your occupation? I’m a physician. What are your plans while you’re here? Going to the beach, reading, and seeing God Of Carnage at Cape May Stage. My favorite thing though, is going to the beach. When is the last time you got some flowers? I just got some this past spring — back in March. PHOTO BY GABI URDA... FLOWERS BY KATE’S

The Cape May Crossword

None of the generic nonsense you see in other papers... a puzzle just for Exit Zero! By Kate Chadwick and Caroline Wenzel SO YOU love crosswords? Great. Sit down, get a cup (or glass) of your favorite beverage, relax and enjoy this puzzle. The answers to the crossword are all related to our themed issue, which is whale. The solution can be found on the front page of our website, exitzero.us. ACROSS 2 . Inhabiting tropical and subtropical waters worldwide, this whale can generate short, powerful vocalizations that resemble a human moan. 4. This type of whale is known to be playful and enjoys the company of humans, with incidents of them swimming alongside surfers reported. 6. T he song “Last Great American Whale” was featured in the 1989 album New York, the well-received 15th solo release by this American rock artist. 7. I n Nootka Sound, Canada, a killer whale by this name became a major attraction for tourists and paparazzi between 2001-2006. 9. L iving the longest life of any animal, this whale also has the largest mouth on earth. 11. A native of the Arctic, the male of this whale species is distinguishable by the long, single tusk that projects from the left side of its upper jaw. 12. B ecause of this type of whale’s strong social bonds, often when one becomes beached, several become beached. Perhaps that’s why this one is the type of whale this is most often stranded. 17. This is the land creature that is most closely related to whales. 19. T he colorful name of the largest whale and largest known animal, for that matter. 20. T his type of whale is known for its

This bird tangled with killer whales...24 across

long, complex “song.” 22. T he other name for killer whales, this was also the name of a 1977 movie that attempted to capitalize on the success of Jaws — and failed miserably. 23. W ith only 400 of this whale species left in existence, they are the world’s most endangered. 24. N ative Americans believe that killer whales are enemies of this mythical creature, and that the geography of some parts of the Pacific Northwest coast region is the result of a legendary battle between them. DOWN 1. T his whale is the second largest animal and is called “the greyhound of the sea.” 2. U nlike most other whales, this particular species is able to swim backwards. 3. Known as the whale with the largest teeth, this creature has a signature blockshaped head. 5. There are two types of whales: toothed whales and this type.

8. T his Animal Planet television show is about the killing of endangered whales, and what people are doing to stop it. 10. Located on Carpenter’s Lane in Cape May, this is the name of the gallery opened in 2010 by the Washington Street Mall shop, Whale’s Tale. 13. T his is another name for the Beluga whale (2 words). 14. I n the movie Free Willy, Willy was this type of whale — his family-friendly cinematic persona notwithstanding. 15. If you go on a whale-watch trip in Cape May, you’re just as likely to see these friendly finned creatures. 16. This physical feature is the most important for a whale’s ability to live and breathe. And Kramer shot a Titleist into one on an episode of Seinfeld. 18. This type of whale is roughly the size of humans, but is rarely spotted by them since it prefers such deep waters. 21. T he Whale Of A Day festival is held each July in this section of North Cape May.

The Answer Lady

T

Wise answers to perplexing questions

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady My boyfriend and I were dining in a local restaurant last week when a couple seated near us got into a huge argument. It started small but got progressively worse, ending with shouting and even name-calling. We were seated outdoors, which made it a little better, but it still kind of ruined our experience. We were going to stay for dessert, but we just got the check and got the heck out of there. In hindsight, my boyfriend said we should have said something to them — would that have been the correct course of action? — Indigestion Dear Outspoken Your correct course of action would have been to get down on your knees and thank your lucky stars that you weren’t waiting on these cretins. Back in the Stone Age when the Answer Lady was still waiting tables,

she once had to deal with a horrid couple who spent the entire meal hissing and sniping at one another like vipers, and the “gentleman” of the pair ended the evening by screaming at the Answer Lady and throwing his doggy bag on the floor like a five-yearold child in the throes of a tantrum. But the Answer Lady digresses. It was best that you did not approach the offenders yourself, as people who behave like this in public would likely not hesitate to throw a punch. One should immediately advise a manager when

something is amiss with a dining experience (Note: this advice is not to be confused with “wait until you get home and post an anonymous rant in excruciating detail on a website or two”). By the way, a manager should also be made aware of the fact that two well-behaved customers are about to leave without dessert. Perish the very thought. Dear Answer Lady Summer has officially arrived — I ran into not one but TWO exes on the same night at two different happy hour spots in town. It was only due to a great deal of self-control that I didn’t cause a scene with either one of them. What’s the best way to handle situations like this? — Self-Control Dear Selfish You could stay home for the rest of the summer. While most of us have had relationships that may have been, in a word, mistakes, if you cannot be civil with anyone with whom you are no longer romantically involved, that is your problem. Do not make it the problem of people around you who are attempting to enjoy themselves.

What’s Your Story?

Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here? What’s your name and where are you from? My name is Nicole, and my family and I are visiting from Emerson, New Jersey. What are you doing here? I am here on vacation with my husband and kids. We have been here since last Friday and we have been having a great time so far. And we’ve had a really busy day today. What did you do today that made it so busy? What didn’t we do? We went to the lighthouse, to Sunset Beach, we bought hermit crabs (we have six), we went to the wonderful Exit Zero Store, went out for ice cream, and now we are going to the pool here at Congress Hall. The theme of this week’s Exit Zero is “whales.” Have you ever seen a whale? Sadly, we have never seen any whales up close, but we have been to Whale’s Tale, if that counts! And I know that my kids would really love to see some whales someday. Interview by Caroline Wenzel PHOTOGRAPH BY GABI URDA

The Old Fogey

A

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

T LAST, my operatic masterpiece, “Apology To The Whale,” is complete. I have been working on it ever since I realized one day that our treatment of those wonderful beasts had been less than kind. And my personal role in that was less than less than kind. Back in the day, there was no aspect of Cape May life that was not in some way indebted to whales. To be specific, dead whales. We had our whale oil lamps, our eat-all-you-canfor-a-penny whale meat buffets, the ladies (and some of the gents) had whale-bone corsets (the late MrsD’Catur was, I must say, quite an impressive sight in hers — she was an ample lady and once strapped and teased into one, used to draw lascivious stares as she navigated around town, the whalebone stays and taut satin creaking like a tea clipper in a gale). We also had a nice range of whaleskin jackets and hats, which polished up to a lovely sheen. In hunting season we had so much whale meat to store that Shoebies used to flock from miles around to see the famed Cape May

Blubber Mountain, and would pay a shilling to clamber up a ladder to the top to be photographed. Of course, the mountain would shift occasionally and more than a dozen tourists fell into the blubber, meeting a nasty but cushioned death. When did I realize the error of our ways? Well, it’s a long story but reduced to the facts, I was saved from a Giant Squid by the intervention of a kindly whale, who then helped me to shore, only to be harpooned in the eye by a boatload of hunters from

Wildwood. I swore lifelong friendship to all whales there in the bloody water (of course the water was bloody: what did you think I would do to those murderers? Forgive? Oh no: the D’Catur motto is “‘boot thurbaws,” which I believe is Gaelic for something harsh but fair). Of course I ended hunting in our city that very day, and have patrolled these waters ever since, handing out savage blows to those who would harm a whale. But the musical apology has been my passion: I would have been finished a lifetime ago, except I needed an organ that would play music that whales would understand instantly. In the end, I cannibalized a dozen old church organs and a set of bagpipes (the latter I did not need, but any enterprise that separates a Scotchman from that infernal instrument is a bonus) and have rigged a generator to supply the air needed. The tune will convey deep regret, humble apologies and a promise of either free fish for life, or a permanent seat on the UN Security Council (I am not sure which, but either one would be acceptable).

Activity Of The Week

T

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Fresh from the farm.

UESDAY dinners are easy — take your brood to the West Cape May Farmer’s Market and get whatever smells good. Listen to music as you savor a crab cake, he enjoys ribs, and you share kettle corn for dessert. You’ll burn off the calories on the walk home. Farmer’s markets hearken back to a time when every community had a market day. They’re not always formal arrangements, like West Cape May’s, but they’re always social, community-oriented events. Farmer’s markets are environmentally friendly, featuring local food with less shipping, processing and packaging, and frugal, because they cut out the middle man. Many foodies have become locavores, eating only food grown or caught locally — although most make exceptions for coffee, tea and spices. Not coincidentally, the number of farmer’s markets and stands in the US has about tripled in the last 15 years. The West Cape May Farmer’s Market has something for everyone. If you’re a good cook, you’ll delight in having the freshest ingredients to work with. For you, there will

Rick Tues. - Sat.

be ceviche or grilled polenta stacks, followed by tarts made of beach plums, berry granitas, or flaming fruit kebabs. Since it’s West Cape May and lima beans rule, you can make succotash. Maybe you’ll make some jam and preserve the taste of summer into the fall. If you are not a good cook, the farmer’s market is even better. Some of the best sum-

mer meals are more about assembling than actually cooking. Create a dinner salad, or google recipes for a simple gazpacho and turn tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers into a meal. Make a foil packet for your favorite summer fruit — cut up if necessary — and throw it on the grill for ten minutes. Serve over ice cream, and impress your friends. If you’d rather not cook, you can find plenty to eat, from empanadas to crepes to chicken wings. Wet your whistle with wine or lemonade. Finish up with donuts or cheesecake — you’ll even find Tupperware to take it all home. And if you’re not hungry, the Farmer’s Market has unusual gifts and clothing. The West Cape May Farmers Market is held at the Backyard Park behind West Cape May Borough Hall on Broadway, every Tuesday from 3 to 7:30, rain or shine, until August 28. The music starts around 5 —even the musicians are local. Parking is limited, so ride your bike or walk, if possible. Bring a couple of cloth shopping bags to make it easier to carry everything home. Wear sunscreen. Taste summer in West Cape May. Next week: Go Fishin’

There’s a good reason whales are covered in whaleskin: it’s the ultimate waterproof, and was the favorite of Cape May’s whalers for 100 years! Not only does it “shuck” off rain, but the natural blubber lining keeps the head warm and insulated against sudden impact.

The adoption fee is $95.

She does not know her own stength, so she may not do well around young children until she receives training. The adoption fee is $95.

«

JASPER is patiently waiting here at the shelter for someone to take him to a forever home. He is shy at first and takes time to build new trust. Once Jasper gets to know you, he will be your new best friend. If you’re looking for a younger, very sweet boy to love, stop by the shelter and give him a second chance. The adoption fee $70.

BELLE came to the shelter with three brothers, and all she wants is a forever home. She is a very friendly girl and loves to show affection. APE May Stage does it again! We’ve been laughing ‘till we’re blue at the antics in God of Carnage (running through August 4), our Second Stage Series is the best yet, and, as always, we’re committed to bringing you quality, professional theatre at an affordable price. Over age 62? See God of Carnage at half price on Sunday, July 8. Tickets are only $15 — 50% off the regular senior price. Tickets go very quickly for these nights, so get yours soon. Our talented interns have been feverishly preparing for our annual intern show. This year’s offering, Five Women Wearing the Same Dress, is sure to please. Written by Alan Ball, writer of HBO’s Six Feet Under, True Blood, and the feature film American Beauty, this hilarious comedy focuses on five bridesmaids at a society wedding in Tennessee. Just after the ceremony, the women are hiding out in an upstairs bedroom, their dialogue as frothy as the hideous dresses they’re forced to wear. All five women have a personal history with the groom, a charming but nasty predator named Tommy Valentine. Running Monday, July 9 at 8pm, tickets are only $15 – don’t miss out! Cape May Stage brings you yet another of Broadway’s legends: Lee Roy Reams! Columnist Liz Smith calls him “Broadway’s Darling” and the New York Times hails him as “Broadway’s song-and-dance man nonpareil” for his Broadway roles. He won critical acclaim as Roger DeBris on Broadway and the First National Company of Mel Brooks’

He played Billy Lawlor in David Merrick’s legendary 42nd Street (Tony and Drama Desk nominations), Lumiere in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Albin/ZaZa in La Cage aux Folles, Cornelius Hackl in Hello Dolly! with Carol Channing. Reams brings his one-man show, Gotta Sing, Gotta Dance, to the Robert Shackleton Playhouse on Monday, July 16, at 8pm. It’s the last week to sign up for Discovery Theatre Camp. Overseen by Roy Steinberg, this year’s camp will be led by master teacher Elizabeth Troxell, head of the Milton Hershey School theatre department for 17 years. Bird Droppings

O

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

VER the next few weeksgoing-on-months, themarshes over Cape May will be akin to the Twilight movies, mostly having to do with bloodsucking and little to do with romance. You might think I’m writing about vampires but then you think this is a birding column so probably not. Well, you’re half right. This is a column about birding AND about evil and salvation. Salvation from the malevolent Greenhead Fly. In case you’re unfamiliar with Greenheads, I suggest you do something totally normal for this time of year — put on a pair of shorts. Then get in a boat and navigate one of the back bay channels, or go crabbing off one of the bridges cutting through the salt marsh. I promise, you will gain an intimate familiarity with Greenheads. The price of this knowledge is paid in the blood that will run in rivulets down your exposed legs. Greenheads are mostly confined to salt marsh and similar environments. They are most bountiful after a hatch,

and you can tell when there is a hatch in two ways. First, you’ll see lots of Laughing Gulls f lying over the Garden State Parkway in a manner that suggests that they have a snoot- (make that bill-) full. They are snapping greenheads out of the air. The other way is to wear shorts. The last time I wore shorts in Cape May was July 1977. I was conducting surveys of

colonial breeding birds in the marshes behind Stone Harbor. It required me to march across open salt marsh. I believe I lost about two quarts of blood that day. The last time I wore shorts at all was 1979. It was July. I was at Brigantine (now known as Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge) near Atlantic City. I was standing outside the protective armor of my car trying to see whether a presumed Wilson’s Phalarope was really a Wilson’s Phalarope. My legs, very literally, were streams of blood. So were the legs of the young woman standing next to me. It was a first date. She passed the test. Now about salvation. If you look to the skies over Cape May in the next few weeks-going-on-months, you’ll see a lot of small, pointy-winged birds with bright white underparts and blue-green backs. These are Tree Swallows. They are part of our air defense system, and will be packing into Cape May’s airspace by the squadron-load. At times, in places, their

Bird Droppings ? From Page 111 numbers can be in the hundreds of thousands. The “a million” figure has been bandied about, but I don’t know of anyone who has actually been able to count them. They’re here because they’ve gotten rid of the kids — their young have left the nest, f ledged, gone to bigger trees. It’s time for mom and pop to go on vacation. They head for the Jersey Shore because of the open, unfettered airspace and because there is lots of stuff to eat. Sounds just like our species on vacation. But what they eat are f lying insects. Like mosquitos, like biting f lies. Like Greenheads. They also munch dragonf lies, which also eat mosquitos (but nobody eats as many mosquitos as Purple Martins). In years past, the swallows roosted in tall reeds between Cape May and the South Cape May Meadows. Since many of the Phragmites have been controlled, they may roost elsewhere, like the bayberry tangles at the Cape May National Wildlife Refuge along Ocean Drive. So, next time your leg gets bloodied by the scissor-like mandibles of a Greenhead f ly, look skyward for salvation. There, working hard for you, is your air defense

The evil Greenhead Fly doesn’t stand a chance against the Tree Swallows flooding the region system. They don’t ask for a dime from the taxpayers, and they’re glad to help! If you still prefer to wear shorts and insist on visiting salt marshes in the summertime, you might want to head over to the Cape May Bird Observatory — THE place for all your nature needs, ask for some insect repellant. Pick up a free birding map, checklist and schedule of our daily walks (without Greenheads). Talk to our staff about the best spot for birding, check out optics, field guides, and anything else you might need — or don’t know

you need yet! CMBO is located at 701 East Lake Drive in Cape May Point 609884-2736, and is open from 9:30am to 4:30pm daily except Tuesdays. Our staff are always willing to help with questions. Scan the bookshelves for bargains in the used and vintage books section, look at the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise, including a terrific lithograph done just for the CMBO, or just browse. Take a look at sighting sheets to check what’s being seen out in the field, check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars, or sit outside on our garden benches and enjoy the birds and the Lake Lily view. If you can’t make it in person, you can also visit us at www. BirdCapeMay.org — where birding Cape May is only a click away! Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at CMBO) he weaves information, insight anden fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for the New York Times.
