Subscriber Of The Week

Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Kim Manzi of Cincinnati, Ohio. . How long have you been coming to Cape May? Since I was four years old, so for 44 years now. And I got married in Cape May in 2003. Who are you normally with? I’m usually with my whole family. Favorite thing about Cape May? Everything!! There’s just way too much to name! Least favorite thing? That would be having to leave. Favorite restaurants? A few would be the Merion Inn, Hot Dog Tommy’s, the Mad Batter, the C-View Inn, and the Washington Inn. Favorite place to stay? The house we rented this year, which was 211 Grant Street. It was such a great house. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? It is too far from Cincinnati! Favorite thing about Exit Zero? Probably the Talk Of The Town. I love to see and hear what’s going on in Cape May. Least favorite thing about Exit Zero? I would like more Terry O’Brien short stories and ghost stories from Craig McManus. What’s your T-shirt size? I take a medium please!

Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Kate Chadwick. If you think you know what establishment this is, you could win a gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter at facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

Quotes Of The Week

Random Factoid

“Everyone who believes in telekenesis, raise my hand. “— James Randi “The most important sense to investigate the psyshic sense is common sense.”— William Roll “The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science.” — Albert Einstein

THE Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel is supposedly home to two famous ghosts: Marilyn Monroe and Montgomery Clift. The latter lived in Room 928 of the hotel for three months while filming From Here To Eternity, and many hotel employees and guests claim to have sensed his presence in that room.

Cocktail Recipe Of The Week... The Lavender Ghost THIS drink has been described as the “fancy version of a gin sour.” The gin sour is also commonly called the White Lady, a “mythical name for a female ghost,” which is appropriate, considering this week’s theme is paranormal. Each sour combines a citrus and a sweetener, and in this case, that sweetener is lavender syrup. The result is a drink that’s just the right amount of sweet, and just the right amount of flowery.

Ingredients: 2 oz Dry Gin 1/2 oz Lavender syrup 1/2 oz Lemon juice Combine the ingredients, shake over ice, and serve in a chilled cocktail glass. Add a bit more lemon, if you like your drink a bit more tart, or a little more lavender. It’s your drink, so have fun! Then, enjoy with your favorite people. Or ghosts.

Talk Of The Town

Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

Occupy Convention Hall WE HEARD a rumor that Convention Hall had been operating without a certificate of occupancy, which is hard to believe, considering that all eyes have been on this project. No way the city would let something like this slip through the cracks… right? We called City Manager Bruce MacLeod, who told us the building is operating with its third TCO, or temporary certificate of occupancy. Temporary, because there are still projects — some of the them minor details, “like clearing away boxes and paint cans” — on the building’s punch list that need to be completed before a formal certificate can be issued. “The previous TCO expired on July 5th or 6th,” he said. So the new one must have been obtained at that same time, we figured, in order to prevent a lapse. But MacLeod couldn’t tell us the date the newest one was obtained... only that it expires on August 10. Okay... but, surely, there was a TCO for the Stockton concert that was held on July 9, right? “Yes,” MacLeod said. Something smelled fishy. If the city manager didn’t know when the current TCO was obtained (something in itself hard to believe), how could he know there wasn’t a lapse between this TCO and the last? We made a call to Construction Official Bill Callahan. “The new TCO was obtained on the 10th,” he told us. “There were three or four days we didn’t have a CO on paper.” Hmmm. This means that, in fact, there was no CO for the concert held on July 9. Callahan explained that going through several TCOs is not unusual for a project of this scope, and that — although he must “take some on the chin” for the CO lapse — the

building has never, since its opening, been an unsafe place for the public. “There’s nothing dangerous,” he said. “Nothing that can blow up or hurt anyone. I wouldn’t allow any of that. It’s small stuff that needs to be taken care of. Housekeeping stuff.” We called MacLeod back, to ask once more about the July 9 concert. “I guess I’m a little confused on this thing,” he said. “If that’s what the construction official told you...” He went on to explain that we could “look at it from a different perspective.” If there was an issue with the operation of the building, Callahan would have “red-tagged” it way back at the end of May, instead of ever issuing a TCO in the first place. “The building was found to be functional and operational even though there is still work to be completed.” We get that there’s probably little danger that some piece of Convention Hall will blow up and dismember some unsuspecting concert-goers. But someone could trip over a rogue paint can and decide to sue the city... couldn’t they? We called Richard Sandman, a lawyer based in Cape May Court House. “You mean to tell me it’s that brand new building in Cape May that’s operating without a C of O?” he asked. (Our thoughts exactly.) “If there were to be an incident,” he said, “it’s possible an insurance company might try to deny coverage in a case like this, though they wouldn’t necessarily succeed.” Does it matter? The point is, this shouldn’t have happened. The city holds businesses in town to a certain standard — one that includes obtaining proper certification. “A business operating without a CO can be written up a notice of violation,” Callahan told us. “It can be shut down until it’s repaired, and if there’s noncompliance, we can seek an

injunction and go through the court system.” But who’s policing the city for their own noncompliance? We made around 40 phone calls, trying to determine what state laws, if any, dictate what happens when a municipality breaks its own rules, but the state’s Department of Community Affaris, who police the municipalities, did not get back to us in time. We can’t help but think back to the city council meeting that took place on June 1, 2010, in which a resolution that would subject city projects to review from the Historic Preservation Comittee was not passed. This is why we have vinyl fencing and a digital sign at Convention Hall, even though there isn’t a business in town that could get away with forcing such horrors upon us. It’s about time the city was held accountable for its actions in the way it holds the rest of the town accountable. Or at least, be able to own the mistakes when they happen. “I know that building from the pilings to the roof,” Callahan told us. “And my office and myself have worked very hard on it, and there have been very few complaints. Of course, screw-ups do happen.” Yes, they do. And it’s about time the city owned up to them, too. Can you imagine the grief a local B&B or bar would go through if they were operating without a Certificate of Occupancy?

You Go, Girls

MORE than a hundred spectators showed up for the fifth annual Cape May Point Women’s Lifeguard Challenge — a “grueling” triathlon — off of St Peter’s Beach last Wednesday. The race was founded by 12-year Cape May Point

And they’re off! Fifteen female competitors from nine different beach patrols — Avalon, Cape May, Cape May Point, North Wildwood, Sea Isle, Stone Harbor, Wildwood Crest, Island Beach State Park and Sea Girt — competed in the Cape May Point Women’s Lifeguard Challenge. Aleksey Moryakov

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 guard Kristen Moorby, a production manager for ESPN. “When I was sixteen,” she told us, “I used to watch the men’s Superathalon, and I thought it was a great event. I’d always hoped to do it, but it’s just one competitor from each patrol and realistically, I’m not going to be able to run a five-minute mile pace, which is what some of these guys are doing.” Kristen talked to some of her colleagues, and the women’s challenge was born. Wednesday’s race showcased the athleticism of 15 female guards from nine different patrols, and it showcased the enthusiasm of their fans, too. It was 6:28pm when we pulled up — just two minutes to go-time — and the sun was beginning to sink, but the temperature still hovered near 80. We found a spot at the starting line between a nervous group of parents, and a group of bikini-clad girls who’d spelled out the name of their favorite competitor on their stomachs. “I don’t know how the contestants run in this stuff,” said the gentleman beside us. “I can barely walk in it.” Meghan O’Leary of Cape May Beach Patrol — last year’s second place finisher — took an early lead. “I’m over-the-top proud,” said her mom Michelle O’Leary. “She works three jobs — one on the beach patrol, one at Sunset Liquor, and one on the whale watching boat. And she just finished graduate school, earning a Master’s in School Counseling. She still finds the time to train, and she’s so conscientious. All of these girls work so hard, and they’re not just triathletes; some are full-time

teachers. Some are full-time mothers.” Next up was the three-quarter mile paddle-board, followed by a half-mile swim. Meghan still had the lead going into the water, but it was North Wildwood guard Erin Regan who would pull out a first-place finish. “I never expected to do this well. Maybe it was the currents.” Uh, we don’t think so, Erin. “These girls are in such perfect condition; I’m so jealous.” Hmmm, athletic and humble. Erin also told us that she’s studying nursing at Mount Saint Mary’s and that her summers are “so much nicer than working hard in school.” We think most people would consider lifeguarding/training for triathlons working pretty hard work, too, and we wondered how many women have taken up the challenge. “There definitely needs to be more women’s events,” said Cape May Point Beach Director Chris Garrison, who told us that 30 to 40 percent of his patrol is comprised of women. It’s a number that, consistent with other patrols in the nation, seems to be growing. We called Wyatt Werneth, the official public safety spokesperson for the American Lifeguard Association, who told us that “women play a very important role on beach patrols” and that “sometimes, they’re tougher than the guys… Maybe it’s because they’ve got to give childbirth.” It’s this toughness that’s contributed to an increase in numbers, especially recently. “We didn’t have our first female on the patrol until 1985,” said Werneth, who retired as the Lifeguard Chief in Cocoa Beach, Florida after twenty years. “And we had one that year. Now, it’s not unheard of to have thirty-five females on the patrol.”

Dancing Queens SEVEN of Cape May’s most dedicated girls have made it to the quarter finals of NBC’s reality contest juggernaut, America’s Got Talent. Jersey Cape Dance and Gymnastics Academy (their stage name for the show is Unity in Motion) is the only act coming out of the state of New Jersey... out of 75,000 other auditions. Not only have these girls caught America’s attention, but Howard Stern said of them, “Keep your eye on Unity in Motion,” noting that their acts have not only contortion, but “strength.” Indeed, Unity in Motion’s act is a combination of contortion, dance, and gymnastics. And it’s these three components which set this act apart from the others. “They take risks. The act is dangerous, but that is what makes them stand out,” says Stina Smith, the owner of the studio. They cannot afford to make a mistake because they are working as a machine, and it will be much more obvious. That is why the routines are clean and well rehearsed.” The group came up with the name Unity in Motion after throwing a bunch of ideas around. This name, they thought, really demonstrates that they are a unit working towards the same goal. Their performance already took place (on July 17), but it will not air until Wednesday, July 25. In the meantime, the girls have been staying in New York City for 10 days, staying at the Best Western, which is paid

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 14 for by America’s Got Talent. Usually the next round is held in Hollywood, but this year it will be held in New Jersey. So if they are to make it through, Unity in Motion will be performing on their own turf. Jersey Cape Dance and Gymnastics Academy appeared on America’s Got Talent three years ago, and are determined to win this time. They were discovered, like many other rising stars, through YouTube. They got a call asking if they would be interested in auditioning, and now here they are in the top 48. Three years ago they made it to the top 40 — back then, the judges decided that the girls were too young and could have many more future opportunities. But this group of girls, ages 11-17, is poised to go all the way. These seven Cape May girls have given up their summer fun here to practice more than 20 hours a week. Since practice began back during the school year, it was difficult to balance the demands of school and rehearsals. However, each girl managed to earn straight As. In short, to get this far has taken a tremendous amount of dedication. “We are back and we are not going home

this time. We are making it through. That is our motivation,” says Stina.

Singer Songwriter Spotlight PETE MROZ is a man on the move. He is hitting the road as this issue goes to press, headed to West Virginia on his first stop of a multi-city tour in support of his most recent and third studio album, We’ll Rise Above. And luckily for local singer-songwriter fans, that tour brings him to The Boiler Room on Wednesday, July 25. If you’ve been faithfully reading this space for the past couple

of weeks, you know that Singer Songwriter Cape May and Congress Hall have teamed up to spotlight some of the talent of the annual spring event right now, allowing you to get your fix a little bit early. The Showcase will run each Wednesday night through August 29, and begins with an Open Mic at 8:30, followed by a different featured singer songwriter each week. Mroz is based in Nashville, and we asked if this will be his first trip to Cape May. “No — I fell in love with Cape May a long time ago,” he tells us, “thanks to friends like Gordon Vincent and MQ Murphy. There is just such a great feeling to me in Cape May, and I’m looking forward to coming back. And Myra [Vassian, Entertainment Director at Cape Resorts Group] has been simply great to deal with. “This is really a special trip to me,” he says. “I’ve been endorsed by Martin Guitars, and I’m picking up a new one right at the factory in Nazareth, Pennsylvania — I’m so excited. And I realize this is musician geek talk, but getting another great guitar like this is like adding another kid to a family.” And how many, uh, kids/guitars are in his family now? “This will make 13,” he tells

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 16

I’m Looking Through You

us. Guess he doesn’t think 13 is an unlucky number, huh? “Nah,” he says. “I don’t believe in unlucky stuff. We make our own fate and our own destinies.” And these are just the kind of philosophies that Mroz conveys in his songs. Is he writing about himself? “I’ve been writing songs for a long time now,” he tells us. “And it’s pretty hard not to write about yourself, about your unique experiences. When you’re in your twenties, you’re presumptuous — you feel like everything you’re experiencing has only ever happened to you. As you get older, you realize this isn’t true, and your writing becomes more accessible, more open to interpretation. When that comes across to your audience, that’s the point at which you connect with them. And that’s where art happens — it’s in that emotional process.” Is this why he prefers the more intimates audiences of a singer songwriter venue? “Absolutely,” he says. “I don’t even make set lists — I just try to read the room. When it’s smaller and quieter, I can look them in the eyes. And I can listen to them as much as they’re listening to me.”

HOW MANY times have you driven by the little white building with the blue sign advertising psychic readings on Route 109, on your way into or out of town (it’s called Jacquelyn Psychic, by the way)? Did you ever think, hmm...I wonder. We did too, so we popped in to check it out for ourselves — this is the paranormal issue, after all. The business is run my Mark Nicholas and his mother, Christina. “My mother and I both do readings,” Nicholas told us. “We have been at this location for nearly 12 years.” He says their hours will vary, but usually the bright orange OPEN sign in the window is on from 9am to 11pm, though sometimes it’s illuminated at 5am. They accept walk-ins, but you can also call for an appointment on 609-898-7752. Fret not if you have no experience with psychics — there are several different options, as well as price ranges here. Nicholas does clairvoyant readings, past, present and future life readings, reiki,

numerology and tarot cards. He is 42 years old, and says he has been doing this in some capacity or other since around the age of five. “I spent a lot of my younger years using it to my advantage. Even into my adulthood, I went into sales, but I always knew who would be more receptive to buying something and who wouldn’t, so I was using my gift for my own earthly gains.” Now he is involved in such outreach activities as missionary work in Third World countries, and he also works with various homeless outreach organizations in several states. And he has done plenty of readings for people who are out of hope. “Whether you are a believer or not, I know that some of the people who have walked through this door — particularly in this location, for some reason — feel as if they have run out of options. They don’t even know why they’re here, but I do. And it is my job to help them, to give them some kind of guidance.” And how was our reading? We don’t want to give too much away, but let’s just say it was eye-opening indeed.

The column where anonymous gasbags have their say! I’M SORRY but I just don’t believe in ghosts... Bigfoot yes, but not ghosts! — Cape May *** I HOPE that when I pass onto the other side I can become a ghost and do nice stuff for people! — Cape May *** PATRICK Swayze was awesome as a ghost in the movie Ghost! And he’s probably a good ghost now too, rest his soul. — Cape May *** I DON’T know about ghosts but I sure love goblin up food... get it, goblin? — Erma *** I BET you humans did not know there were actually ghost whales, did you? — Mr Spouty Offy Whale *** WITH all the technology these days you’d think we’d be able to catch a ghost... They did it over 25 years ago in the movie Ghostbusters!! — Cape May [Spouty-Offy Editor’s Note: Yeah, that was a good movie... remember the giant Stay Puft marshmallow man? He was cool and fluffy!] *** I’M NOT so sure that Craig McManus is even real... I think he is actually a ghost himself and that’s why he can see all that ghostly stuff. Kind of like Bruce Willis in The Sixth Sense! — Cape May Point *** WHAT IF ghosts were the ones flying UFO’s... and all this time we blamed it on aliens! — Erma ***

CAPE May has plenty of ghost stories but what it really needs is a haunted house! — Villas [Spouty-Offy Editor’s Note: Perhaps the site of the old Vance’s Bar would be ideal since nothing seems to be happening there.] *** WHY IS the only digital sign in all of Cape May on a building owned by the city? That just seems wrong considering that businesses cannot put them up. — North Cape May [Spouty-Offy Editor’s Note: Totally agree!] *** I THINK there’s a ghost at the Exit Zero store... stuff keeps disappearing from our shelves and racks! — Erma [Spouty-Offy Editor’s Note: There is no ghost! It is summer time and we’ve been pretty busy with customers buying our nice stuff!] *** BOO! — Cape May *** I MISS Boo, he was a nice guy and died too young. — Exit Zero *** I HAVE a good name for a Cape May ghost book... Ghost Coast! Just send me royalties whoever uses the name! — Erma

The Undertow

I

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column, which changed the face of Cape May, is back, and it’s as pretty good as ever

’VE missed you terribly and hope you will allow me back into your lives (or at least into your bathroom magazine racks) for 10 wasted minutes a week. Words cannot convey my excitement at being back on the pages of Exit Zero, so I won’t try. Instead, I’ll just say it never felt right not being here, and now that not-right feeling has been wronged. Or something. And while I’m glad to be back, I am told that if my return is not up to snuff, my editor Jack Wright has a couple of columns waiting in the wings to jump in my grave — “Parker Smith’s Guide to Capital-A Acting! How-To Do Many Lines”, and Victor Grasso’s “No Matter What You Do I Can Make it Better By Adding a Squid & Other Parenting Insights.” Don’t Tell My Celebrity Girlfriend(s) of the Week: Hot on the heels of Anne Hathaway (Terry O’ke, Martini Beach, 2008) virtually THROWING herself at me (and by “throwing herself at me” I mean politely hanging out and singing karaoke with friends and family) and Tina Fey (Kiddy O’ke, Boiler Room, 2011) practically STALKING me at Congress Hall (and by “stalking me” I mean politely attend-

ing a kids karaoke show and singing Beatles tunes with her baby daughter… more on that later) and Maya Rudolph, well… we never actually met, but I just KNOW she was checking me out… now comes word that SNL alum Kristen Wiig is in town at (where else?) Congress Hall. I just KNOW she’s going to come to Terry O’ke (Thursday nights, Boiler Room, 9-12) and get all handsy, then recognize my innate comic genius and cast me in her next movie (ohpleaseohpleaseohplease…) as her dashingly charismatic love interest. Fine. I’ll do it. But NO full frontal nudity. Same contract my wife made me sign. Hey, wait… How To Win Friends & Influence People of the Week: So last summer Terry O’ke converted

from CD to digital (Long question: How much fun is it ripping 1200+ karaoke CDs onto a USB hard drive? Short answer: Not very) which is fine and dandy, assuming the host knows how to plug it in. This… did not happen my first Kiddy O’ke gig at the Boiler Room (Thursdays 6-8:30, Sundays 7-9:30). So, running 15 minutes late, I haul down my old system, I’m sweating like Jim Linnington at North Beach Health Club (sorry, Jim… but how could I not pick on you my first week back?), furiously plugging this into that, when somebody taps me on the shoulder and says, “Excuse me.” I turn abruptly and snap, “What!” And there is the lovely and talented Tina Fey trying to hand me a song slip. THAT, my friends, is how you make it in showbusiness. Or the opposite of that. Possible Celebrity Sighting of the Week: I’m pretty sure that was Philip Seymour Hoffman window-shopping outside the Carpenter’s Square Mall as I enjoyed my eight-minute break between Kiddy O’ke and Terry O’ke. Had the same bearing and carriage, and shock of bold white-blonde hair. But I never got a

full-on look at him, and it would have been painfully awkward to ask, “Hey, can I look at your face? I think you might be somebody famous but I’m not sure.” Three times is my limit on that. Non-Possible/Possible Potential Celebrity Sighting of the Week or Not Maybe: People magazine reached out to ask about the rumor that Anne Hathaway got married on the Cape last weekend. Apparently roads were blocked off, police escorts deployed, snipers on every rooftop, etc. This rumor is patently false. Ms Hathaway STARTED to get married, had the ceremony interrupted by an EZ columnist who shall remain nameless, and ended up on the back of a bus with said columnist as Simon and Garfunkel played wistfully in the background. Or maybe that was just a dream I… somebody… had. Summer Ritual of the Week: Yes, Terry O’ke is still a thing that exists, at Congress Hall and Fridays at Rio Station. And it’s great to reconnect with my Cape May friends who can’t bring themselves to travel the 4.78 miles to see me in Rio Grande between October and June. I’d complain but… four out of 12 months is about right. Enough for the heart to grow fond, tepid, mildly annoyed and back again. But without Rico and Mary Suave, Skip and Bobbi Schwester, Frank Scott, Chris South and literally SEVERAL others, my summer Thursdays wouldn’t be the same. Kiddy O’ke at the Boiler Room has become quite the thing. Such a thing, that we’ve expanded it to two nights a week. I have known Leslie Donaldson nee Kramer… or is it Kramer nee Donaldson… for many years now, and in that time she has attended probably 1,000 Phillies games. And it is clear by her fantastic performance as Blue (the Congress Hall mascot) that she has studied the Phillie Phanatic with compulsive obsession. And your Boiler Room server will be Alexa. Or Ashley. Alexa? Ashley… hrm. Boiler Room patrons confuse Ashley Orsino and Alexa Austin because they’re

lovely, young and awesome, though Ashley won’t see this because she’s in Scotland doing a play for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Hate. Her. So. Much. It was like 2009 all over again singing Squeeze with Jack Wright as Mark Chamberlain and Lawrence Green roundly criticized him and ogled my sister-in-law, Maria Fiorentino. Maria was in town with her fella and his brood to enjoy the Fourth of July at Congress Hall and use up all my free passes to Morey’s Piers. Picking a prettiest Fiorentino sister is like picking a best Beatles album. They’re all pretty great. (But I, of course, got Sergeant Pepper’s.) Free Labor of the Week: 16-yearold Spenser Detwyler, who has been attending Kiddy O’ke for seven years, is not only quite the gifted entertainer (his “Mr Cellophane” from Chicago will bring a tear to your eye) but is also talented at lugging heavy objects. See you in August, Spens. How did I get this far into my first column without mentioning the Ghost Ship which, according to Free Time magazine, “has the potential to be fantastic but fails to deliver”? Yes, I’m still at Morey’s Piers managing the best haunt on the eastern seaboard (Free Time can go suck a lemon — Ghost Ship won Best New Attraction in About.com’s 2010 reader’s poll, beating out, among others, King Kong and Harry Potter). In 2011 we mounted our first ever Halloween event, Morey’s FEARS, which was a huge success. The show will be even bigger and better in 2012, so come check it out. And if it seems a tad early in the year to be talking about Halloween, I’ve been steeped in it since mid-March. So shut up. If you’re keeping score at home, I am indeed working seven days a week for the second consecutive summer (as I write, I am on Day 27 of 82) and bitching about every damn second of it. Will this be the year I’m not dead broke come January? And now, a word about politics… ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

Bringing Back Classic Ruth Draper

T

Review of East Lynne Theater Company’s “Ruth Draper’s Cast of Characters”... by Catherine Dugan

HE East Lynne Theater Company presents Ruth Draper’s Cast of Characters, a series of sketches based on the work of legendary charactor actress Ruth Draper. Each piece, or “monodrama,” is a complete story presented by one actor, without props or scenery. Karen Case Cook and Suzanne Dawson alternate, in tales that move from amusing to heartbreaking. Under the direction of Gayle Stahlhuth, the scenes are more than simple storytelling. Instead, they are complete miniature plays, in which all of the characters are present, but only one is visible. From the start, when we meet Cook’s earnest do-gooder “Opening a Bazaar,” the audience imagines the rest of the charitable crowd on stage. We feel embarrassed for the invisible student who loses her bloomers in “A Class in Greek Poise,” even though it is only her instructor who is portrayed by Dawson. The actors transform themselves completely, with changes in gait and accent, and the stage feels crowded with talent, though

each woman is always alone. And although the sketches are set in the early part of the 20th century, the characters feel timeless — you will recognize the committed fitness instructor telling her students to take control of their “bwahdies” with diet and exercise, and “The German Governess” has her hands full with students who misbehave in recognizable ways. An experienced guest breezes through “A Cocktail Party” on her way to the opera, and an overwhelmed grandmother can’t find her “Glasses.” The working class breaks your heart in “A Peasant,” “At a Telephone Switchboard,“ and “A Charwoman.” Cook’s cheerful cleaning woman is kind to her troubled co-worker and, when it becomes clear that she has her own problems, the audience is

reminded that the person who complains the most is usually not the one with the greatest burden to bear. Ruth Draper (1884–1956) was an American actress who originated the kind of character monologue done by Whoopi Goldberg, John Leguizamo and Lily Tomlin. She performed for the royal families of Britain, Spain and Belgium and charmed audiences worldwide. The East Lynne Theater Company, committed to presenting the “American Spirit on Stage,” is only the second production company to be allowed to produce these monologues since Draper herself performed them. Ruth Draper’s Cast of Characters, directed by Gayle Stahlhuth, with Karen Case Cook and Suzanne Dawson, runs until July 21, Wednesday through Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church of Cape May, at 8:30pm. Lee O’Connor is Technical Director/Stage Manager and Gabrielle Wilson is Production Assistant, with costumes by Marion T. Brady. Tickets are $30, $25 for seniors, $15 for students. There is no intermission.

The Movie Column

C

By Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival

ALL it “The fox, the vagrant, and the vixen!” New Jersey’s favorite film festival is hosting a summer film series at the Chalfonte starting this weekend! The series of Friday night films will begin at 7:30pm at the hotel (301 Howard Street). Within this weeks’ column is a chance to win two free passes to each screening if you are the first to email capemayfilm@hotmail.org with the answer to the trivia question. We will screen the following films: July 20: Fantastic Mr. Fox, an animated classic nominated for two Oscars starring George Clooney, Meryl Streep, and Bill Murray. Recently in this column, I reviewed what some are calling this summer’s sleeper hit, Moonrise Kingdom, from Wes Anderson. This earlier offering from Anderson was one of 2009’s best films. To win two passes to this screening, be the first to email the name of the film that beat Fantastic Mr Fox to take the Oscar for Best Animated Film. July 27: The Gold Rush is a Charlie

Wes Anderson’s animated classic Fantastic Mr Fox opens the Film Society summer film series Chaplin classic, and this is Chaplin’s 1942 re-make of his earlier silent film. Chaplin is an American film icon with a long history of directing, writing, and acting in films dating back a more than a century. This particular film is said to be one of his personal favorites. To win two passes to the screening, be the first to email the name of a Chaplin film for which he was either nominated for or won an Oscar. August 3: Roxie Hart starring Ginger

Rogers and based on the true story of the woman who inspired the hit movie musical Chicago! To get recognized and jump start her singing career, Roxie Hart admits to murder. To win two free passes to this screening, be the first to email the name of the actress who played Roxie Hart in the film Chicago. “These are forgotten films,” says Jeff Giordano, award-winning independent filmmaker who is hosting the series. “Yet these three works are examples of great storytelling and filmmaking that are fun to watch and discuss.” Giordano will present short independent films preceding these features films. His films have appeared in film festivals around the world (and at the Cape May Film Festival). And mark your calendars: on Sunday, August 5, the Film Society will screen the classic silent film The Mark of Zorro with live organ accompanist Wayne Zimmerman, an event presented with the East Lynne Theater Company at First Presbyterian Church at 500 Hughes Street in Cape May.

The Exit Zero Bouquet Ambush

«

EACH week, Exit Zero ambushes an unsuspecting and deserving citizen with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from one of our fine local florists. All you have to do is answer a question or two by our roving photographer, Gabi Urda. This week’s recipient is Katie Repici of Cape May Court House, New Jersey, who was ambushed on a promenade bench. What are you doing here? It’s my day off. I’m just doing a crossword puzzle. What is your occupation? I’m a bartender at the Rusty Nail. What are you up to today? I’m not really sure yet. I just had a hot dog, and I might go to the movies. Or I may head up to Atlantic City to do some shopping. When is the last time you got flowers? On my birthday. Thanks! PHOTO BY GABI URDA... The Answer Lady

T

Wise answers to perplexing questions

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady My brother recently broke up with his girlfriend of several years. I was not overly close to her, but I liked her and naturally we all got used to having her around. The break-up had been looming for a while, but when it came it was kind of abrupt. I feel like I should reach out to her and say that I’m sorry, that I’ll miss her and wish her the best. Is this a bad idea? —Sister Dear Sister The short answer here is “the Answer Lady doesn’t know,” although she can certainly appreciate the impulse. It is next to impossible for family members not to get attached to the significant others of other family members. Indeed, it took the Answer Lady’s mother several years to get over the break-up of the Answer Lady and her first boyfriend (and approximately 30 seconds to

‘don’t worry about him - he has moved on already,’ etc.

get over the loss of the subsequent one — you see how this can work both ways). If the ex is someone who doesn’t live locally and you’re fairly certain you won’t be running into her at the Nail, then certainly send her an email, a text or a Facebook message saying that you’re sorry it didn’t work out and wishing her a happy ever-after. Please note: we will limit our comments thusly. It is not our place to editorialize along the lines of ‘it’s a shame you’re too dense to realize he was the best thing that ever happened to you,’ or

Dear Answer Lady I have to break up with my girlfriend. She is wonderful, but it’s just not working out. I don’t want to hurt her, but I know I’m going to. I’ve never had to dump someone before — I’ve always been the one who gets dumped. How do I do this? — The Dumper Dear Dumper There is no easy way to break up with someone, or the word “break” would not be included. “Break” is not a pleasant word; i.e. “You break it, you buy it” or perennial parental favorite “Don’t come running to me when you break your leg.” Obviously, this situation precludes taking her to Terry O’ke and requesting “Hit The Road, Jack.” Or the leaving-a-note-on-a-cocktail-napkin-sitting-on-her-chair-and-fleeing-the- premises-while-she-is-in-the-restroom ploy, not that any civilized person would do such a thing. Ever. In theory. But the Answer Lady digresses. Be direct, be honest, and above all, be kind. Relationships do not have to end catastrophically. Usually.

What’s Your Story?

Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here? What’s your name and where are you from? My name is Cara Anderson and I am from Philadelphia. What are you doing here? I am here in Cape May with my family — we’re on vacation. We have been here for a couple of days, and so far it’s been really great. What were you doing when we interrupted you? I was going for a walk with my mom until she had to use the restroom, so I was just wating for her here. Do you have any big plans for today? We don’t really have anything set in stone for today, so for now we are just going to wing it and enjoy simply being here in beautiful Cape May. The theme for this week’s issue of Exit Zero is “paranormal.” Tell us — do you believe in ghosts? Well, (laughing) no — I can’t really say that I do believe in ghosts. The Ultimate Cape May Activity Guide

Whether you want family fun, or a romantic night out, you will find the answer in here... get reading!

The alpacas of Bay Springs Farm in Cape May are adorable. So are the owners, Warren and Barbara Nuessle... the farm is open weekends to visitors.

C

APE May isn’t just a beach; it’s so much more than surf and sand. Not sure where to start? You’re in luck: we have assembled a complete guide to Cape May activities. Even locals might find something new. Plus, there are rainy day ideas, marked with a . Enjoy! FAMILY-FRIENDLY Cape May has a great variety of activities that you can enjoy with the entire family. Here is a handy and comprehensive list of ideas to get you started. 1. Historic Cold Spring Village Ever wonder what it was like to live in Cape May 200 years ago? The answer can be found at this open-air living history museum, a seven-minute drive from town. Through interactive, educational and hands-on activities, visitors can make a connection with the past by experiencing it. The many authentically restored homes, amid idyllic shaded areas, make it hard to not feel like Abe Lincoln’s in office… and it’s even easier

when the Civil War re-enactment rolls into town. There is a themed event every weekend — Cold Spring is a can’t-miss for history buffs. Give them a call at (609) 898-2300 or visit their website at www.hcsv.org. 2. Tidelands Eco-Tour Board the Osprey to learn about the rich history of Cape May’s waterways, like the creation of Cape Island, the dredging of the harbor, South Cape May, fishing fleets, the various features along the harbor, the Nature Center of Cape May, the Corinthian Yacht Club and more. The Osprey is conveniently located at the Miss Chris Marina. Offered at 10am, 1:30 and 6pm daily, with a 1-hour 4pm harbor cruise every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Adults $23, kids $15, children six and under free. Call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. 3. Cape May-Lewes Ferry Take a trip over to Lewes, Delaware, a small, quaint seaside town (kind of like this one!), then make sure you check out bustling Rehoboth Beach, the Fenwick Island Lighthouse or Cape Henlopen State Park. You can also take advantage of the tax-free

shopping at the outlets. No matter what you choose once you’re there, you’ll enjoy the quiet and vastness of the bay on the deck of the ferry as you watch for dolphins and whales on your way. They even have a bar onboard! For more information or to book a reservation, call 800-64-FERRY or visit www.capemaylewesferry.com. 4. The First Resort Exhibit  The First Resort by author Ben Miller is the basis for this exhibit sponsored by the MidAtlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) at the Carriage House Gallery at the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington Street. “Cape May’s 20th Century Renaissance: From the Pages of The First Resort” brings to life the key turning point in Cape May’s 20th century history. Visitors to the exhibit will be treated to rare photographs, video and a multitude of artifacts showcasing the years immediately before and after the city’s Urban Renewal movement. The exhibit will be open daily through November 4 and admission is free. Gallery hours vary. Call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org.

Page 84 5. Whale and Dolphin Watching Dolphins are fairly common in the waters off Cape May, but it’s still a big thrill to see these beautiful creatures. Cape May Whale & Dolphin Watch and Research Center offers you the best chance to see them up close. And, as the name implies, you might even see a whale. Tours take off from Wilson Avenue. If the ship is docked you can see it on your left as you cross the small bridge before the Lobster House on your way out of town. For directions or more information, call (609) 898-0055 or visit them on the web at www.capemaywhalewatch.com. 6. Historic Haunts House Tour  Get into the Victorian spirit on a guided tour of the historic (and some say haunted) Physick Estate, and learn about the Victorians’ fascination with spiritualism, as well as today’s modern ‘“ghost-hunting” methods. Tours at 7:45pm on Mondays and Wednesdays through the end of August. Limited tour. $10 for adults, $7 for children. Call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac. org. 7. Cape May Family Treasure Hunt Discover the fun of exploring Cape May and uncovering its architectural elements from a kid’s perspective. Packet includes a clue sheet and map that will take you on a

Thursday, July 19, 2012 self-guided discovery tour. Packets for the entire family are available for $5. For more information, call (609) 884-5404 or visit www. capemaymac.org. 8. Lunch with the Pirates Lads, lasses, buccaneers and landlubbers are invited to the Carriage House Tearoom & Café located at the Physick Estate for a pirate-themed lunch experience as pirates invade the tearoom and commandeer the show. $18 for adults, $10 for children and includes lunch. Offered Fridays at 11:30am through August 31. For more information, call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. 9. Cape May Lighthouse, Oil House and Museum Shop The lighthouse, built in 1859, has 199 steps leading to the watch gallery for a panoramic view of the Jersey Cape and Atlantic Ocean. The Museum Shop carries souvenirs, books, videos and other maritime items. Admission to the Visitors Orientation Center and the ground floor of the lighthouse is free. Tower admission is $7 for adults and $3 for children. For more information, call (609) 8845404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. 10. Queen Victoria Gardens Tour Stroll through the wonderfully preserved, beautiful gardens around the four buildings of the Queen Victoria, a renowned

bed-and-breakfast in the heart of the Historic District on a self-guided tour. Purchase tickets at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth. Admission is $7 and includes a booklet that describes the plants found in numbered areas throughout the property. For more information, call (609) 8845404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. 11. Bay Springs Alpaca Farm This one’s hard to believe, but Cape May has an alpaca farm. Near the end of beautiful New England Road, Warren and Barbara Nuessle live what they call the “alpaca lifestyle” – quiet and simple. Visit them between 10am and 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays and see how alpaca fiber is spun into yarn, or shop at their store which carries many alpaca-related items (forget wool: go with an alpaca sweater this winter!) And don’t forget to greet the grazing alpacas – they make it all possible. Call (609) 884-0563 or visit www.bayspringsalpacas. comfor more information. 12. Combination Trolley/Physick Estate Tour  First hop on this guided trolley tour of Cape May’s Historic District, followed by a tour of its only Victorian house museum, the Emlen Physick Estate, located at 1048 Washington Street. Admission also

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children and can be purchased in advance at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth, or on the day of the tour at the Second Street Pavilion on the promenade in Cape May. For details call (609) 898-8848. 14. World War II Lookout Tower Museum and Memorial Fire Control Tower No. 23 on Sunset Boulevard is New Jersey’s last freestanding World War II tower, part of the immense Harbor Defense system of the Delaware known as Fort Miles. Visitors can climb to the sixth floor spotting gallery while reliving the homeland defense efforts made by soldiers during World War II. The ground floor of the tower is fully accessible. $6 for adults and $3 for children. For more information, call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. 15. Cherry House Tour  This beautiful Federal-style house was built in 1849 by Lemuel Leaming and named for

the Cherry family of Philadelphia. Now owned by Beth and Frank Acker, the home has been lovingly restored and furnished with antiques. Each room is a treasure chest of cherished family mementos and the hand-painted murals throughout are a reflection of the owners’ lives as well as the home’s seashore heritage. Tours are offered on Thursdays at 11am, a tour with tea at 2pm through September 20. Tickets cost $10, $18 if you’re doing the tea tour, and are available at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth. For more information, call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. 16. Private Wildlife Garden Tour More butterfly and hummingbird gardens are tucked into Cape May County than just about anywhere else in the country. Gardening naturalist and author Pat Sutton leads tours through a variety of gardens to showcase young and old, sun and shade, large and small, containers, water features, dragonfly ponds and more. Bring lunch to picnic in one of the gardens. Select dates through July and August. Tours are $30 for members and $40 for non-members. For more information, call (609) 898-8848 or visit www.njaudubon.org/centers/NCCM. 17. Aviation Museum  The Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation

Museum, a few minutes north of town, has a wonderful collection of planes and helicopters all set in a building which, at its peak during WWII, accommodated 222 planes and 17,000 takeoffs and landings per month. Young or old, the awe of flight will catch you like a net. The museum is open daily from 9am-5pm. Across the road is another must-see, the Vietnam Memorial Museum, which features a special garden commemorating the 21 fallen soldiers from Cape May County. Call (609) 886-8787 or visit www.usnasw.org. 18. Emlen Physick Estate Tour  With its new theme for 2012, “What Those Victorians Wore,” a tour of the Emlen Physick Estate, Cape May’s only Victorian house museum, is sure to be an entertaining and educational experience. Tours cost $10 for adults and $5 for children. For more information, call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. 19. Road Trip It seems silly to suggest leaving Cape May, but when the road calls, it’s hard not to answer. Grab some gas and try out Route 147 (Ocean Drive). It runs through Wildwood Crest, where the Doo Wop-style hotels of Wildwood are a block away, and Stone Harbor. Or why not explore Cum-

No matter which half of the Twin Capes you’re on, there’s always more to see and explore waiting on the other side. And there’s no better way to get there than the Cape May–Lewes Ferry. From the waterparks in Delaware, to Victorian architecture in Cape May, if you aren’t visiting both sides of the Twin Capes, you’re missing half the fun.

The Old Fogey

T

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

HERE is nothing “para” about the paranormal. Oh, I concede that for some folks, the notions of spirits, hauntings and the rest might seem unsettling, but when you have not merely stared Death in the face but made him blink first, then sat down for a single malt with him, you are past the stage of anything being para. Mind you, watching Death sip his Scotch, clack his jawbones in satisfaction then see the whisky trickle out the sides, was a little strange. Anyhoo, if you live in Cape May, you are by nature used to sharing your sidewalks, attics and armchairs with spirts, shades and the occasional poltergeist. And in my own case there is an added story, one that will chill your heart. For I have, over the centuries, drank deeply from the waters of the Fountain of Eternal Youth, located just outside Cape May: you head along Stimpson Lane, take a right, then as soon as you …oh hold on, there goes the telephonic device… I’m back dear hearts, now where was I? Oh, yes: I shall tell you the location of

that restorative spring next time we meet in the street. But back to my tale! Well, we of the Cape May Immortals Society have kept ourselves young by the above method, but the waters can also save the life of one poised on the cusp. The first time this happened was when I flew back from South America after discovering the location of the lost city of the Aztecs. I took a spear in the chest as I fled with some samples of carved gold idols (purely for academic interest, you under-

stand). Well, I just managed to land the plane beside the Fountain, having lost nine pints of blood. I fell into the water, and was restored. But as I rose, gasping, I saw on the other side, my doppelganger do the same, but with a hint of the translucent about him, before he faded away. I thought nothing of it, until reports came in of me supposedly ignoring old friends and enemies on the street at night, of walking through walls and such japery. Then, a few years later, a brush with a mob of howling savages resulted in the same sort of injury (and a sworn intent never to go to Wildwood again) and after my healing in the Waters, those odd sightings again increased in number. Well, it turns out that when it saves your life, the Fountain also makes a Ghost out of a chap. Each time, another spirit. So now I have 23 separate shades of D’Catur haunting this city, which can become confusing. And also useful, as they can usually be persuaded to run errands, cut the lawn, fight duels and write this column …

Which brings us to.... 24. Visit A Farmers Market Better yet, visit two farmers markets! On Tuesdays through August 28, the West Cape May Farmers Market is the place to be from 3-7:30pm for vendors, activities, great food and live entertainment. Head over West Cape May bridge to the Cape May Lewes Ferry Terminal in North Cape May on Saturdays through August 25 from 9am1pm for local produce, baked goods, artisan crafts and more. 25. Parasailing has become a popular pastime that lets you soar above the coast and see Cape May from a perspective most people will never enjoy. It may be a view to die for, but we can assure you that you won’t be risking anything – the boat captains are coast guard certified and extremely safe. There are two great options to choose from. East Coast Parasail in Cape May at Utsch’s Marina, (609) 898-8359; Atlantic Parasail at the Two Mile Landing restaurant and marina on Ocean Drive highway, (609) 522-1869. 26. 27. Sunset Beach The name says it all — follow Sunset Boulevard until it ends, then watch the sun sink beyond the jutting concrete ship. “God Bless America” is played as a veteran’s casket flag is lowered each day from May until September. After the ceremony, grab some food at the Grille or enjoy the incredible deals in the gift shop. There’s a long beach strewn with Cape May diamonds, or play a round of minigolf at Sunset Beach! 28. Self-Guided Audio Tour of Cape May Discover the Historic District of Victorian Cape May at your own pace with hand-held audio units leading the way. The $10 tour package comes complete with a map and index for 96 historic buildings on 69 sites. Cape May Arcade has two locations, one on Beach Avenue and Gurney, the other at Beach Avenue and Jackson Street. 31. Higbee Beach It used to be a bit of a scandalous place (nude bathers – gasp!). Not anymore... or, not usually. Follow New England Road until it ends, walk the path — aka Mosquito Alley —

Activity Of The Week

W

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Get a better beach body.

HETHER you look like a swimsuit model or you’re one of the reasons Cape May once banned speedos on the beach, you may want to get some exercise while you’re in town. Exercise fits in with Cape May’s Victorian roots, as people of that era appreciated the link between a healthy body and a “moral” mind. Bathing in the ocean was one path to health, as was a daily constitutional, and people wore their summer wools for both activities. Modern swimming costumes are more comfortable, and all you need for your constitutional is sneakers, a t-shirt and shorts. If you run for exercise, you’ll love the flat streets of Cape May. Try a route that includes the promenade for cool breezes and an ocean view. Go early to avoid the crowds and the fudge sample temptation. Walking can also give you a workout. Bring your pedometer to see how many steps you burn as you shop or sightsee, especially if you’re planning to visit the

Rick Tues. - Sat.

lighthouse. And bicycling around town is a great way to stay fit and save your sanity, as you avoid parking issues altogether. Bring a lock! If you prefer a gym workout, North Beach Health Club offers day passes for $12 (609-898-3800). Balance Pilates and Yoga offers private and group sessions

(609-884-3001). Cape May’s Department of Recreation has fitness classes on the deck outside Convention Hall. Try Zumba on Tuesday or yoga on Saturday at 8am. All levels, including absolute beginners, are welcome. $5 per class. Congress Hall offers Boot Camp daily at 7am ($15 plus tax), Yoga on the Lawn, every summer morning from 8:30-9:45 ($20), and Zumba, Saturdays at 8am ($15). Rent a kayak and tackle your love handles. The intensity of the workout depends on water conditions, but a steady paddle burns about as many calories as a brisk walk. Stand-Up Paddleboarding gives a total body workout that may burn as many as 700 calories an hour. Slip into the water for a break whenever you like. We took a nine-year old, and she and her stepmom shared a board — one on the tip while the other paddled. They had no problem standing up right away and gliding past their gym-rat cousins. (Laughter is good exercise, too.) Try Aqua Trails at 609-884-5600. Next week: “Play” with the Kids

(Visit Cape May National at www.cmngc.com or call 609-884-1563.) But, if it’s your wedge that needs some work, Cape May Par 3 will let you play 18 holes for just $15.95. No bag? No problem. Cape May Par 3 rents clubs for just $1. Visit them at www.capemaypar3.com or call (609) 889-2600. 2. Bike Ride It’s no secret: Cape May is a biking town. Have you even tried to navigate the streets of Cape May during rush hour? It’s enough to make you want to start jogging to your destination. But have no fear; there are bike rentals that beat braking (and braking again, then honking, then braking once more). Try Cape Island Bikes at 727 Beach Avenue or 135 Sunset Boulevard, (609) 884-8011. 3. Nature Trails Next to the lighthouse in the Cape May Point State Park there are several trails weaving through ponds, dunes, marsh and forest. There are different levels of difficulty marked by colors and most of the trails have wooden walkways. Even on the longest trails, breathtaking scenes in a tranquil setting will make you wish it was longer. Just make sure you wear comfortable shoes. 4. Yoga Join Karen Manette Bosna for Yoga On The Beach, with a couple of locations and times to choose from. Or meet her in the Cape May City Elementary School pool for Aqua Yoga classes. For more information, call Karen at 609-827-8886, or visit yogacapemay.com. If you prefer your downward dog

Tennis The William J. Moore Tennis Club — named after the first black (as well as the oldest) tennis pro in America — rents rackets, balls and courts. It’s located next to the Physick Estate on beautiful tree-lined Washington Street, and there are always a variety of local characters up for a game, match, or set. The courts are open to the public daily for just $10 per hour and a half. For more information call (609) 8848986. 6. Horseback Riding At Hidden Valley Ranch, you can take lessons in the pastimes of heroes and kings under the watchful gaze of Nancy Hall and her daughter Angi Dickenson, who have nearly 70 years of combined equine experience. Saddle up. Call Hidden Valley Ranch at (609) 884-8205 for more information, or check them out on facebook. 7. Fishing Cape May is one of the busiest commercial fishing ports in the US. The sport fishing is big business, too... AND a whole lot of fun. South Jersey Marina boast the Murderer’s Row, a top-notch selection of boats with crews who know these waters better than anyone. Try the experienced team of Stalker Sport Fishing: (609) 231-9611, or the Miss Chris fleet: (609) 884-3939. For all your bait and tackle needs, stop by Jim’s Bait and Tackle on Route 109 by the harbor: (609) 884-3900. 8. Tidal Marsh Tour by Kayak Explore Cape May County’s most beautiful salt marsh via sit-on-top kayaks. It’s a great way to see nesting ospreys, herons, egrets and assorted crabs. There are two excellent options to choose from. Aqua Trails at 1600 Delaware Avenue in the Nature Center: (609) 884-5600, www.aquatrails.com, and Miss Chris Marina:

Bird Droppings

T

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

HIS column isn’t written for everyone. In fact, it doesn’t have a shearwater’s chance in the Gobi of reaching most of the individuals to whom it’s targeted. Since most of them were visitors, they’re already gone, already back at work, and probably forgot they formulated this question in the first place. But in case you were one of the ten or so people on the beach between Cape May and Cape May Point at 8:15am on Monday, July 2, and you observed our group, all looking seaward and showing a great deal of excitement, then the answer to your question is: “Shearwater. Great Shearwater. That’s what we were looking at out over the beach.” Since you have already established yourself as being an inquisitive person, and since most answers to most questions set the stage for the next question, you’re now wondering: “What’s a shearwater?” A shearwater is a pelagic bird; a bird that spends most of its life at sea. Like gulls? No. Gulls, sometimes called

“seagulls,” should more aptly be called “land gulls,” since most species live primarily on land and only forage in coastal areas. 50 miles offshore you find few gulls but you may, at the right time of year, find shearwaters. That’s one of the reasons the group was so excited. Seeing shearwaters from shore is not a common experience and seeing one just beyond the surf is a

real treat for land-locked observers. Which brings up the next question, or questions, because it’s precisely here that lines of inquiry diverge. Some members of our species go one way; some the other. So for some, the next formulated question might read “Why would anyone think seeing some stupid bird is a treat?” For these individuals, the line of inquiry (and any reason you may have to read this column to the end) stops here. Enjoy your visit. Hope you got great pictures of the lighthouse. But for those whose minds latched onto the possibility that, erhaps, they were missing something pretty neat, some encounter they would have enjoyed incorporating into their morning walk on the beach and vacation experience, I’m happy to say you are right. You would indeed have enjoyed watching this sea-colored bird, stitching the horizon to the sky with its f light. In harmony with waves to the degree hawks embrace clouds, Great Shearwaters rank among the

Bird Droppings ? From Page 111 planet’s great voyagers. Breeding in the South Atlantic, each spring the population vaults hemispheres to forage in the food-rich waters of the North Atlantic, their travels covering over 20,000 miles and their journey most of the months of the year. About the name shearwater. These blade-winged birds are able to tease lift out of the sea itself. Gliding on the cushion of air advancing ahead of a wave, at times, when the birds banks, the pointed wing tips shear the water like a feathered knife. The sight of a lone shearwater is captivating. The sight of hundreds or thousands wheeling over the sea is mesmerizing. My record is a million and a half visible at one time from a ship in the Bering Sea. It was, and remains, the greatest aggregation of living things I’ve ever witnessed. So that’s what we were looking at. A Great Shearwater. A neat bird with a neat story that, for a short time, became part of our story, too. Since you’re clearly a person who wants to engage and be engaged by the world around you, I’m sorry you missed it. But if you’re in Cape May, you can go on one of Cape May Bird

The sight of a Great Shearwater in flight over the ocean can stop you in your tracks Observatory’s morning field trips. While I can’t promise you a Shearwater, I can promise you more neat birds than you can possibly find on your own (and a new way to enjoy Cape May), and answers to questions you haven’t even formulated yet. If you want to go on one of our field trips, head over to the Cape May Bird Observatory — THE place for all of your nature needs. Pick up a free birding map, checklist and a schedule of our daily walks. Talk with our staff about the best spot for birding, check out optics, field

guides, and anything else you might need — or don’t know you need yet! CMBO is located at 701 East Lake Drive in Cape May Point 609-884-2736, and is open from 9:30am to 4:30pm daily, except Tuesdays. Our staff are always willing to help with questions. Scan the bookshelves for bargains in the used and vintage books section, look at the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise, including a terrific lithograph done just for the CMBO, or just browse. Check the sighting sheets for what’s being seen out in the field, check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars, or sit outside on our garden benches and enjoy the birds and the Lake Lily view. If you can’t make it in person, you can also visit us at www.BirdCapeMay.org — where birding Cape May is only a click away! Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at CMBO) he weaves information, insight anden fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for the New York Times.
