Subscriber Of The Week
Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Mike Pellman of Mt Ephraim, New Jersey. How long have you been coming to Cape May? I’ve been for 42 years, and my wife and I for 30. Who are you normally with? I’m usually with my wife, occasionally our son and daughter and husband, and more recently our grandson. Favorite thing about Cape May? We were first drawn by the quaintness, now the friends we’ve made among locals. Least favorite thing? The bickering of small-town politics. Favorite restaurants? Oyster Bay, Mad Batter, Hemingways, Harry’s, Uncle Bill’s, McGlade’s. Favorite place to stay? Avondale, Victorian Motel, Caroll Villa, Congress Hall. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? I’d bring back the other Wawa in town. Favorite thing about Exit Zero? The color issues, and seeing friends’ photos each week. Least favorite thing about Exit Zero? When you take your break over the winter — I can’t get my Cape May fix for six weeks. What’s your T-shirt size? I take an extra-large.
Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Kate Chadwick. If you think you know what establishment this is, you could win a gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter at facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!
Quotes Of The Week
Random Factoid
“A baby is an inestimable blessing and bother.” — Mark Twain “Every baby born into the world is a finer one than the last.”— Charles Dickens “There is no finer investment for any community than putting milk into babies.” — Winston Churchill
CANADA is the only country that can account for their birth records for almost four centuries (they started keeping them in 1621). It’s slso the first country to keep a systematic archive of such things, despite the fact that other countries have been established for much longer.
Cocktail Recipe Of The Week... The Slippery Nipple WE FOUND this recipe on drinksmixer.com — about as handy a website as we’ve come across. Because it’s tough to find a babyrelated cocktail... so this is the one we settled on. Maybe if we had searched for “cocktails for the parents of babies.”
Ingredients: 10 ml grenadine syrup 1/2 oz Carolans® Irish cream 1/2 oz DeKuyper® Buttershots liqueur Pour the Buttershots and Carolanns into a shot glass. (let them mix) Add grenadine to form a perfect nipple in the bottom of the shot glass. Take as shooter, lick nipple from bottom of glass.

Talk Of The Town
Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
Mayor Dodges A Bullet THREE locals who filed an ethics complaint against Cape May Mayor Ed Mahaney alleging conflicts of interest arising from the mayor’s negotiation of sports naming rights from Temple University while awarding it three city contracts have been notified that their complaint has been dismissed. The state’s Local Finance Board in Trenton said last week that the complaint had “no reasonable factual basis” under New Jersey’s Local Government Ethics Law. The complaint was made following the publication of a story in this column that featured a letter Mahaney had received from Temple University, which referred to discussions the mayor and the organization had been having about the naming rights to Temple’s athletics facility... at the same time, Mahaney was busily awarding contracts to Temple, apparently without giving any other organization the chance to bid. The three residents, Matthew Glenn, Charles Hendricks and Jim Testa, were sharply critical of the decision. In a statement, they said, “We are deeply dismayed by the superficial manner in which our complaint was handled by the Department of Community Affairs, and we fundamentally disagree with its determination. It appears our complaint was assigned to a junior staff member, a few phone calls were made, but no testimony was taken nor serious investigation pursued regarding the facts. “We continue to maintain that no public official should be able to negotiate valuable personal naming rights for a sports complex from an entity that has appealed to that official for gifts of cash and property, while,
at the same time, the official spearheads government efforts to award three valuable municipal contracts to the same entity. Anyone with common sense can see that kind of behavior is unethical. We know it is not tolerated in the private sector, and we think turning a blind eye to it in government only degrades further the already low image of New Jersey politics in the eyes of the public.” We agree. The whole affair smells bad to our sensitive noses, and we will continue to investigate this story — and for those out there who think this is a “witch hunt”, we think you should be glad that there is a rag out there that actually holds City Hall accountable. (You’re welcome.) The three men are considering an appeal to the Appellate Division of State Superior Court.
Tommy’s Dog Days
THE owner of HotDog Tommy’s, Tom Snyder — aka the guy who wears a stuffed wiener on his head — knows a little about a lot. At the weekend, we stopped by his Jackson Street stand (the one with the sign that reads “If we are what we eat, then I’m fast, easy, and cheap”) around 5:40pm, as he and wife Mary were closing up shop. Tom, sandwiched between a rack of aprons and shelves of industrial-strength detergent, washed the day’s bowls and steaming pots. “Guinea worm disease is just a devastating thing,” Tom told us, water sloshing onto his pair of yellow, green, and red striped sneakers and his Relish today, ketchup tomorrow T-shirt. “Jimmy Carter has been working to eradicate it — that’s one of his main health platforms — and he’s gotten to a point where it’s been wiped nearly off the face of the earth.”
Tom and Mary spend their winters in Sumter County, Georgia — “peanut, pecan, and cotton country” — where they attend the former president’s Sunday school. “The most amazing thing,” he says, “is that this Baptist church is still standing, having me in it every Sunday.” It’s this humor that’s become as much a staple of HotDog Tommy’s, now in its tenth season, as the famous Potato Tornado. This is the guy who saw Tina Fey waiting in his line and yelled, “Sarah Palin is here, and she’s doing a really bad Tiny Fey impression!” The guy who responds to a customer (actually EZ honcho Jack Wright) who says he’s been “dreaming” about the Potato Tornado all day by saying, “You need therapy if that’s what your dreams are about.” The guy who told us, “We have a crack team working for us... luckily, none of them are really on crack.” But you work as hard as you laugh, we figure, if you run a business that consistently generates around-the-block lines of hungry beach-goers, sometimes in near-100F heat. Tom’s lost 12 pounds from slinging dogs this summer, Mary 15. “She does all the hard work,” Tom says, “steaming the dogs, then grilling them, and coordinating that with the steaming of the buns. I’m just the pretty face.” But now, both Tom and Mary are in their 69th year (“She’s older,” he says), and they’ve wondering how much longer they can do “this.” This being seven days a week of 4:30am starts and 8pm finishes. In 10 years, Tom’s never missed a full day of work… only an afternoon or two, and then only because he was ill. “I’ve had issues with cancer and things,” he shrugged, “but doesn’t everyone deal with something like that? To be truthful, we say the

“We are storytellers,” Cape May Stage Artistic Director Roy Steinberg (center) said to the audience at Saturday’s Coffee and Conversation event at the Robert Shakelton Playhouse. “And all of you are storytellers, too.” He is joined by the stars of God of Carnage, Michele Eugene, Jason Guy, Fiona Hutchison, and John Viscardi. Aleksey Moryakov
Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 same thing every year, come mid-July, that we don’t know how longer we’re going to be able to do this. I suppose one of these times, we’ll take ourselves up on it.” Tom came to Cape May via Pennsylvania, where as a high school student, he worked alongside Mary at his father’s potato chip company. After graduation, he earned a degree from Juniata College, before becoming the school’s Associate Dean and Director of Admissions. “Mary was actually hired there first,” he said. “She worked in the athletic and public relations departments. I think they took me on just to keep her. I’ve been riding her coattails for a long time.” Around this time, Mary rolled her eyes and told Tom to be wary of the steaming pot on the counter behind him that was very hot. “Are you talking about the pot, or our marriage?” he said. And then: “I’ve known Mary since before I was born. Our mothers bumped bellies while pregnant in the supermarket. We were wombmates. People ask if it’s difficult working together, but we’ve always done it. We have personal arguments and business arguments and they intersect and overlap and we get over it. We’re happy.” In 1984, the couple moved to Cape May, where they purchased and operated the Manor House Inn B&B — now a single family home. In 1995, they sold that in order to open the Dry Dock restaurant, which they ran for five years. Then, they bought a 36-foot motor home — that’s less square footage than the hot dog stand — that they still call home. “We hit
the road,” Tom said. “We worked in the Black Hills of South Dakota, Mary in a dining room and gift shop, and I was a buffalo tour guide through the buffalo herd of the Custer State Park. That was a fun gig. And then, in the winters, we sold popcorn and soda in the Magic Kingdom at Disney.” Then, 10 years later, they found themselves back in Cape May, launching their next great adventure. “We used to sit outside on stools and talk to passersby when we opened HotDog Tommy’s,” Mary told us. “Because that was back before we had any business.” Since then, the business has “exploded.” Now, they order 200 to 300 pounds of hot dog three times a week just to keep up. “It’s never 1,000 dogs we sell in a day,” said Tommy, “but it’s never less than 500.” And those stuffed hats? “I go through about three a season. You can’t wash them.” But what about the days, we wondered, where you just don’t feel like wearing the constume? “This year’s been tough,” Tom said. “Equipment’s been breaking down on us. Yesterday, both our Coke machines went down, and they operate independently. But people have been coming here for 10 years. I’ve seen kids grow up, and that’s a real pleasure. Making people happy; that’s what it’s all about.” That, and making really good dogs. “People always want to know if I’m sick of them,” Tom said. “We eat them everyday.”
Inside The Actors’ Studio
WE LEFT with a couple of secrets. Little tidbits only an insider would know. Like, an audience will be more sympathetic to a char-
acter who is positioned stage left than one who is positioned stage right. “That’s the side your heart is on,” explained Roy Steinberg, Artisitic Director for Cape May Stage. At Cape May Stage’s first ever Coffee and Conversation held on Saturday at the intimate Robert Shackleton Playhouse, Roy was positioned dead center. (We couldn’t help but wonder what subconscious psychological impact that was having on his audience of 22.) He was joined by all four actors who star in God of Carnage, the acclaimed show that will have just wrapped by the time you read this. And they were all spilling the secrets. That scene that elicited such a guffaw from the crowd, the one where John Viscardi is blow-drying the telephone, causing it to rock back and forth? That rocking was a happy accident, according to the actor (who you might recognize from Law and Order). Those scenes where Michele Eugene has to vomit on cue? That was the most stressful part of the play for her. “It took days before we got it to work,” she said. The moment when Jason Guy must stuff his face with kataifi pastry and a bit falls on the floor? Funny, but not scripted. “The audience would have smelled the lie had I flicked it off the plate myself,” he said. Afterward, he told us he won’t stuff his face “like a pig” before this show, as he usually likes to do, because he has to eat so much of this cake during the play. (Don’t worry; he’s actually eating the “diluted, gluten-free, vegan version” so that he doesn’t “have a coronary on stage.”) And after each performance, we

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 14 also learned, Jason’s had a good time unwinding on The Virginia Hotel porch and the “very classy” Brown Room. (And, no, no matter how convincing the performance is... any realy imbibing only happens after the show. That “rum” they’re drinking on stage is water died with food-coloring. “We do actually have to remember our lines,” John said. “It is a prerequisite.”) About a half hour in to this panel, the actors commented on how strange this phenomenon is — the one where we begin to feel as though we know, say, Brad Pitt, because we’ve seen him in so many films, although in reality, we don’t know the first thing about the heartthrob. Funnily enough, we were starting to feel connected to these actors — these strangers — as well. That was Emmy-nominated Fiona Hutchison from Guiding Light, after all, who just asked a member of the audience — likely a nobody in the entertainment world — if one of her movements on stage was working… just like a friend would do. And that was Fiona telling us details of her marriage, too, talking about what it’s like playing a couple on stage with real life-husband John. “We thought to drum up ticket sales,” she

joked, “we’d have a rip-roaring fight in one of Cape May’s restaurants, and then say: ‘Wanna see more? Come to God of Carnage!’” In all seriousness, Fiona explained, she did hesitate in taking on this role, because it would mean fighting with her husband nearly every day for four weeks, the length of the run. This intimacy is exactly the goal of such events, says Cape May Stage’s Marketing Director, Alicia Grasso. “There is so much more to experiencing live theater than just buying a ticket,” she told us. “One of the things we do is allow people to explore the world behind the curtain.” Indeed, and with
SINGER songwriter Ray Gervato really, really likes what he does. And who can blame him? Can you honestly say that you get a buzz from what you do? (Unless of course you’re a bartender who drinks on the job.) “I love to perform,” Ray told us. “I get a buzz from being onstage.” If you’ve been watching this space, you know that the folks at Congress Hall, in conjunction with Singer Songwriter Cape May, have been bringing you a run-up to the annual Singer Songwriter festival and conference held each spring. This has been in the form of a showcase on Wednesday evenings in the Boiler Room, starting with an Open Mic hosted by Don Shaw, and followed by a different singer songwriter each week. Next week’s featured artist, Gervato, is a

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 16 self-taught singer-guitarist, even though his dad owned a music shop. “He tried,” Ray told us recently. “My dad always told me I should learn to read music, but I never did. I got bored . It came naturally to me anyway.” Apparently so... when he’s not doing the solo singer songwriter gigs, Ray fronts a Jimi Hendrix tribute band. And did he always want to be a musician? “No, actually, I’m an art school dropout,” Ray says. “I started out sketching, then moved into watercolors and eventually oils.” Does he have a preference between the two art forms? “Music, most definitely,” he tells us. “With art, you have to formulate the concept, get it down on paper, tweak it until it’s how you envisioned it. With music, it’s instant gratification — I sit down with my guitar, and there it is.” We heard from Maureen Harris, one of the Singer Songwriter Cape May organizers. “The thing about Ray is, besides being an extremely talented and exciting electric guitarist, he is able to transform that talent into acoustic guitar, too,” Harris enthused. “Without missing a beat, his voice becomes unexpectedly gentle. And his original songs
are great — they’re completely accessible.” So any chance he will return to his art roots? “No,” says Ray. “I paint with music now.”
Babies And Books BABIES don’t have much on their minds. No job to go to, no bills to pay, no idiot drivers keeping them from getting from Point A to Point B in a timely fashion. And yet, it’s safe to say that we, collectively, sure do think it’s important to keep them happy. Hence, a visit to Happy Baby seemed in order for the Baby Issue. We spoke with chipper shop girl Brittany to find out what’s hot in the world of wee ones, and asked her what keeps a baby happy? You can imagine how tickled we were at her response... “Books!” Books? Haven’t the babies gotten the memo that books are passé? Granted, these particular ones are board books, which the baby-hip set knows are small, sturdy, brightly colored books not made of paper, which groping little hands could eas-
ily destroy (unwittingly, of course), but of sturdy pressed board, and are as heavy on pictures as they are on words. The real hot sellers at Happy Baby, Brittany tells us, are the Mini Masters series. Written by Julie Merberg and Suzanne Borber, these sweet little tomes offer titles like Quiet Time With Cassatt, Dreaming With Rousseau, and Dancing With Degas. The books offer rhyming verse paired with magnificent Impressionist paintings (why didn’t we think of that?). You can’t snuggle with a book, though, so just in case of a fussing emergency, Brittany suggests picking up a Jellycat stuffed animal. “These are huge,” Brittany says, and one touch will show you why. These charming critters are so absurdly soft and squishy, they’re downright decadent. So disregard the naysayers, stop into Happy Baby, and pick up a book (and a Jellycat) for your favorite little one. When we left the store, Brittany held up a stack of packing slips. “These,” she told us,“are what I’m checking in now. And they’re all books. Books are big.”
PARTING SHOT If you show it, they will come. “Field of Dreams”, that is… this is the Movie on the Beach that’s playing the day this paper comes out. But there’s a new on-the-sand show every Thursday; check the Chamber’s site for what’s on. We had a blast at “Jurassic Park” (although one of us was lulled to sleep for the better half of it by the sound of the waves). Bring a blanket, and enjoy the big screen under the stars. Next up: “Pirates of the Caribbean.”

The Undertow
Terry O’Brien’s legendary column, which changed the face of Cape May, is back, and it’s as pretty good as ever
T
HANKS to everyone who has embraced my return to Exit Zero. Enjoy it now. I’m sure we’ll be sworn enemies soon. If you really want someone to blame for my three-year absence, I remind you it was Jack Wright who put me in touch with Jack Morey for this little creative writing project in 2009… Took a family outing to Cape May last Sunday, spent $40 in 18 minutes at the arcade, and ended up at the Red Monkey Grill for lunch. The Red Monkey is run by Don Donaldson (formerly of Peter Shields and other local venues) and the Roth family (formerly of Bella Mangiata in Villas, and Bayside Pizza in the Crest), and is in the former home of the Lemon Tree on the mall. (Enough “formers” in there for you?) I know we all miss Lemon Tree, but the Red Monkey is a worthy addition to the Cape May eatery scene. I had a taco platter (one pork with cole slaw, one grilled tilapia with a heated finish, which I slightly preferred, though both were excellent), the wife noshed on a fresh, homemade veggie burger (I’d offer more insight, but I know as much about vegetables as an ant does astrophysics), while
the kids tore into their hot dogs (their second favorite ever behind Johnny Rocket’s, which is a HUGE compliment). Owen, 10, was a little perplexed by the four cheeses on his “Ultimate BLT” (no T, extra B), but left only a bit of crust (which mommy and daddy happily polished off). Overall, an excellent lunch and quite reasonable (less than $50 for five of us) so I highly recommend it. I was stunned to see 14-year-old Caroline Roth working the register. Caroline and I go back a good seven years when she was a regular visitor to Kiddy O’ke and a participant in the “You’ve Got Talent” shows I used to emcee. She CAN’T be getting older. If SHE’S getting older that means I’M getting older, and I refuse
to allow it. On Tuesday I ducked out of work a little early (anyone from Morey’s reading this; keep it in your hat) to guest with the Cape May Diamonds at the Rusty Nail, at the behest of Ric Rutherford (owner, Rio Station). And let me assure you, although I’ve been on stage thousands of times and performed in front of probably a million people in my life, I still get butterflies EVERY. TIME. Tuesday was no different as Ric and local guitar god Ed Dobbs hit the opening chords of “The Heart of the Matter.” I didn’t know it was possible to sing a five-minute song with no saliva, but we powered through and followed with “American Girl.” People clapped and nobody threw stuff at me, so I assume they enjoyed it. Nice Moment of the Week: Before singing I announced, “I used to sing here a long time ago, it’s good to be back.” This was met with a nice round of applause and more than a few shouts of agreement from the gathered masses. Being me, I immediately choked up and clammed the first few notes of the song. But I was able to recover, deliver the song to the

best of my ability, and just enjoy being on stage. Adding to the pang of nostalgia was the fact that, standing three feet to my left, as he did for the six years I fronted Southwind, was Eddie Dobbs, hands-down the single greatest guitar player I have ever encountered. (See? I’m choking up right now.) It was great being on stage with Ed and catching up with the lovely Fran and other assorted folks from my late-’90s Rusty Nail heyday. It felt like I never left. How so? The first thing Ed did when he saw me was ask me to get him a beer. Just like old times… I should also thank the incredible, and forgiving, Cape May Diamonds (or some derivation thereof) who backed me up. See, I’ve never really KNOWN “Mustang Sally” — I just kind of fake it. Big thanks to all who attended and offered their kind words. Let’s do it again one of these days. While at the Nail I had the opportunity to catch up with Charity Clark, who hid in the bushes to puff away on the Marlboro Light she bummed from me (everybody knows, Charity… it’s okay…) and proceeded to sound like a Nora Ephron movie telling me how hard it is being “back out there.” I sympathize, Charity, but I will NEVER be back out there. I am in what will be my first and only marriage, and it’s going to last me my whole life, whether Cathrine likes it or not. Of course, “my whole life” could be anywhere from six months to 60 years. It’s really up to her. Undertow Kiss of Death of the Week: That awesome Man Cave Monday at the Shamrock I plugged last week? Canceled. They’re currently looking for a new home if any of you local-type bar owners are interested. It’s a full band deal leaning towards classic rock, though all genres are welcome. Mikey Alimo’s acoustic version of Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” is a curio worth checking out. He also kicks unholy ass on the Ghost Ship. Did I ever tell you I’ve known Mikey since he was 10 years old running
spotlight for Fine Life? He was SO FLUFFY! Mikey also posted a brief “OMG” on a Facebook video of mine, a performance as Barabbas in The Power of His Love, a great little passion play I directed for Tom Cupp’s late, lamented Fine Life Prods. I can only assume the “OMG” is the result of my incredibly moving performance, for which my main motivation was not tripping on my robe and falling down. Interesting Week of the Week: First of all, Undertow is revived (to much critical and commercial acclaim), a few days later I have a potentially career-altering chat with CMS honcho Roy Steinberg, and on the heels of THAT comes a random text from local film guy Jon Sachar saying, “Let’s dust off the Murder-Oke script…” Jon holds the film rights to my zeitgeist-nabbing 2006 short story of the same name. I always figured by the time we made it I’d be too old to play myself. Unless it was Jon’s plan all along to age me out of the role and bring in my doppelganger, Channing Tatum (it’s like looking in a mirror). Either way, I’ll always have a Magic Mic for you at karaoke. (Yeah, let that one sink in a bit…) No, Thank YOU of the Week: To EZ emailer Janet Buchianico. It’s good to be back. Forgotten Boiler Room-ites of the Week: Bartender Frezel Burton and server Devin Kopp. If Shane Boyd is the heart (and liver and kidneys and lower intestine, all of which were on display after his horrific motorcycle accident a few years back) of Boiler Room Thursday nights, Frezel is the soul. And I’m not just saying that because he’s black. Well, maybe a little bit because he’s black. Regardless, he’s a good guy who takes care of his karaoke host. And Devin is a perky, blonde little thing who buzzes around, always smiling and ramming her chin into my shoulder (sorry, Dev), and she’s the daughter of local journalist Jennifer Kopp, who recently revived Pennywise. So check it out (but only AFTER you’ve picked up your Exit Zero). ’Til next week, don’t get caught in the Undertow.

The Movie Column
A
By Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival
HANDSOME masked man appears seemingly from nowhere to help those in distress, and, oddly enough, is never seen at the same time as a wealthy individual living in the same area where the masked crusader performs his daring-do. Sound familiar? Today, most people think of the Dark Knight. But before Batman was Zorro, created by Johnston McCulley in 1919. Spanish for “fox,” Zorro fought the oppressive colonial government in Spanish California with a quick sword and wit, making fun of his enemies in the process. Like Bruce Wayne and Batman, Don Diego and Zorro are never seen at the same time. On Sunday, August 5 at 8:30pm, East Lynne Theater Company, along with The Cape May Film Festival, presents silent film classic, The Mark of Zorro, with live organ accompaniment by Wayne Zimmerman, who played at last year’s ELTC presentation of The Phantom of the Opera. He’s played in a variety of venues nationwide, regaling audiences with
Silent film classic The Mark of Zorro will be screened for one night only on August 5 silent-film accompaniment and concerts. By the time the star of The Mark of Zorro, Douglas Fairbanks made the film in 1920, he already had 29 films to his credit. Known for his magnetic screen personality, comedic timing, and athletic ability, this was the first time he tackled an adventure-costume epic. The success of Zorro turned him into one of Hollywood’s highest paid stars, and he produced and starred in even more elaborate period
films such as The Three Musketeers and The Thief of Bagdad. Although The Mark of Zorro is a silent film, that doesn’t mean there was absolute silence during its showing. Silent classics were accompanied by an organ, piano, sometimes a full orchestra — the beginnings of film scoring as we know it. From Charlie Chaplin, who scored his own films, to John Williams and Hans Zimmer today, the power of music accompanying a film can’t be undervalued. Experienced composers know that music enhances the action and emotion, but never overshadows it. The Mark of Zorro will show at The First Presbyterian Church of Cape May, 500 Hughes Street. Tickets are $15. For reservations and information, call 609884-5898 or visit www.eastlynnetheater.org. For another great film experience, join the Cape May Film Society’s final installment of Friday Night Films at the Chalfonte Hotel, August 3, 7:30pm for the Ginger Rogers classic, Roxie Hart, the story of the woman behind the hit musical, Chicago! Call or text 609-326-FEST.

Victor Grasso Is Back His startling new SOMA show opens August 4

I
T’S one of the highlights of Cape May’s cultural calendar... a new art show by Victo Grasso. The artist’s highly anticipated new exhibit will open at SOMA NewArt Gallery this Saturday, August 4. The new show, “Somewhere, Beyond The Sea,” draws its inspiration from the deepest depths of the ocean. Working in his unique hyper-realistic style, and drawing from sources as diverse as literature and mythology, Grasso’s new work is at once haunting yet startlingly beautiful. In Gallery One, “The Nemo Project,” inspired by the epic
Jules Verne classic, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, with a nod to Melville’s Moby Dick, is a series of four monochromatic paintings. Grasso is at his explosive best as he chronicles a thrilling tale of an elusive sea beast which is captured, put up for bid, and sold, the sea-hunter reveling in his reward and concluding in a narcissistic fantasy world filled with twisted witticism and folie de grandeur. Every piece in “The Nemo Project” is a self-portrait that allows Grasso to play director, actor, and writer. In February of this year, the

Grasso’s stunning self-portraits conjure up images of Jules Verne... and Ed Wood movies “The Angler” and “I Used To Be A Planet,” both of which evoke the notion of relics washed ashore, found treasures full of texture and depth. In Gallery Three, Grasso exhibits selfportraits executed for the first time in mixed media. They combine varied materials particular to Cape May, with work Grasso has done over six years painting the covers of Exit Zero. The covers torn from the actual

Noyes Museum of Art curated a show titled “Alice, through the looking Glass” with Lewis Carroll’s classic novels as the sole inspiration. When asked to participate in this select group show of 19 national artists Grasso answered the call with “Drink Me”, an awe-inspiring, six-foot photo-realistic painting of Alice. Gallery Two will house this exquisite piece for the first time in Cape May, and it will be joined by works such as

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
AM NOT convinced by babies. Obviously, we have the need for them until my cloning program succeeds, at which point the world will have exactly the number of Jackson D’Caturs as it has sovereign nations, to take charge and usher in a new era of peace, cooperation and powdered wigs. But babies themselves are really just tiny con artists, perfectly able to look after themselves if they so choose, but instead making us feed them, wipe their f labby little erses and pander to their every whim. And they CAN talk, oh yes. Not the babbling gibberish we hear from them 24 hours a day, nor the endless wait for the first proper “word” they utter (which is always something nonsensical anyways, such as “hat” or “apricot”). No, if you listen VERY carefully in the dead of night, you will hear the tapping of chubby little fingers on the keys of your cellphone, and then a hushed conversation quite notable for its lucidity, large vocabulary and proper use of verbs and the first person. Listen closer still and you will hear your
own name (and it will be your given name, not mamma, dadda or any of those other nauseating constructions) being used in mocking fashion. “Dumb schmuch carried me for three miles when I said I had a booboo… yeah, right, eh? Boboo! It’s worth it just to see them say it. Ass****. Tomorrow I’m planning to take a dump in the bathtub, let’s see how they like that.” In truth, humans are perfectly capable of locomotion and speech from around 4 weeks old, but instead they choose not to,

secure in the knowledge that never again will life be so easy. Oddly, most of us forget all of this as soon as that phase is past: perhaps from guilt, or maybe from hypnosis so as not to spoil it for future babies. I am an exception: I remember everything that happened from the age of one second old, and am a harsh judge of my infant self, as I am of those adults who were mean to me and think nobody noticed. But I have had enough of this cult of the baby, and am having a stack of leaflets printed in Baby Language (REAL baby language, not that googoogaga drivel) that new parents are to hold up to their mewling offspring the first time a liberty is being taken involving defecation, snot or a wish to be lifted anywhere. The sign says, very clearly to people under two years old: “We KNOW you are at it! Knock it off!” Thus far, it has effected a dramatic maturing in very short order, in 100 per cent of babies. Of course, it is a little unsettling to witness a three-month-old talking like an adult, but it saves on the cost of diapers.

The Exit Zero Bouquet Ambush
«
EACH week, Exit Zero ambushes an unsuspecting and deserving citizen with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from one of our fine local florists. This week’s recipients are Andrea Shypailo of Rutherford, NJ, Kateryna Olchowecky, of Philadelphia, PA, and Joanna Karaman, of Ambler, PA, who were ambushed on the beach. How did you meet? We met at a Ukranian camp when we were little, and we have all been the best of friends ever since. What are you up to today? We’re just relaxing and reading . What do you do? Andrea: I am a pharmacist. Kateryna: I am a student, my major is communications. Joanna: I I am studying architecture. When is the last time you got flowers? We haven’t gotten flowers since our birthdays, so thank you! PHOTOGRAPH BY GABI URDA

Wise answers to perplexing questions
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us.
if your fiancee was writing to the Answer Lady, she would be offering the same advice. It’s one day - marriage is a whole lot longer and more complicated than a wedding. It would suit you both well to keep that in mind.)
Dear Answer Lady My fiancee and I are getting married in Cape May next fall, and we can’t wait. The issue is, we’re having big problems deciding how we want to do this. She wants the big, fussy church wedding with all the fixings (I’ve been there, done that), whereas I’d be happy to have a justice of the peace marry us on the beach in our bare feet. We rarely argue, but we’re totally butting heads on this. How to negotiate a truce? — Butting Heads Dear Butt Head The Answer Lady was on your side until the ‘been there, done that’ aside. Clearly you’ve been married before, and have experienced all the fuss that goes along with a big wedding. But it sounds as if your beloved has not, and she’s likely digging in her heels because she has always wanted a fairytale
Dear Answer Lady I’m getting ready to propose to my girlfriend, and I want to do something totally outlandish — maybe rent a banner plane. My friends are telling me I’m crazy, but I want to do something spectacular. What do you think? - Over the top Dear Over your head The Answer Lady thinks this is a wonderful idea, with two caveats: one, that you can afford to splurge on this expense, and two: that you are relatively certain that your lady-love will be receptive. The Answer Lady would personally throttle anyone who proposed to her in such a public fashion, and she once witnessed a gentleman propose to a lady in a crowded restaurant, where everyone in the place held their collective breath until she accepted. ‘Twas tense, indeed.
wedding and feels that you are fighting her on this. The Answer Lady is NOT suggesting that you go into debt to cater to a whim here, but surely there is a way you can incorporate some of her fairy-tale elements with your beach bum concepts. Getting married in Cape May is a perfect start. Visit to Weddings By The Sea for some expert refereeing — er, uh...ideas on how to accomplish this in such a way that you both will get what you want. And be willing to give just a little on this - it’s one day out of your life. (And

What’s Your Story?
Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here? What’s your name and where are you from? My name is Peter Spiewak and I am from Poland. What are you doing here? I moved here two months ago. I feel like a movie star, getting my picture taken and being asked questions. What were you doing when we interrupted you? Work, work, work, and more work. I am working over at Uncle Charlie’s Ice Cream. If you weren’t working, where would you be? I would be lying on the beach relaxing. I love Cape May because it’s so small and quiet. The theme for this week’s issue of Exit Zero is “baby.” Do you like babies? [Coughs pointedly] I do like babies, but I don’t think I am ready to have one anytime soon. But if I were to have a baby, I think I would love to have a girl. Interview by Caroline Wenzel PHOTOGRAPH BY GABI URDA

H
Chatting It Up With The Men And Women Who Dock In Cool Cape May... by Caroline Wenzel
APPY is not only the name of this Nordhavn boat we discovered while wandering around South Jersey Marina, but it’s how Sally Cable feels. She and her husband sold their home to live on the open sea, without a destination. And they’re glad they did. Where are you from and how long have you been in Cape May? I am from San Diego. My husband and I sold our house and boat there. Then we came to the east coast and bought this boat. Now we’re just cruising along the east coast. We got here a couple of days ago and we are leaving tomorrow. So what’s it like living on your boat? It is the best decision we have ever made. We’re both retired and we always loved being on the water with our old boat. So we bought Happy and have been happy ever since! Why Happy? We had seen the name years ago and thought it was cute. We toyed with several others, but didn’t want to steal one. So we looked up how many other doc-
Sally Cable aboard Happy umented vessels have the name Happy and since it was only six, we just used it! What are you doing in Cape May? Well, we have never been to Cape May before and it is a great stopping place, especially time-wise because our boat is so slow. We started in Annapolis, went up and through the Sandy Canal, through Delaware, and
then though the little Cape May canal over there. Where are you headed next? Tomorrow, we are leaving for Atlantic City. We will stay there until the weather passes. Then, New York and eventually to Long Island. And from then on… I don’t know. We don’t need to know. You mentioned you had a boat before this one? Before this we had a sailboat and we cruised in Mexico. Our son would join us there. This spring, we will see him again in maybe the Bahamas or Florida. But we don’t get many visitors on the boat. We will, however, be seeing a friend in New York. Any scary adventures? The scariest thing was coming down this canal. It’s so narrow and we are 16 feet wide, and we are new to the boat. We were going with the current so there was less water streaming by the rudder. Every other boat was slowing down to go through that space. So we slowed down too, which made us unmovable and we started spinning in circles. Four years of Mexico and the scariest thing was thing was that.

Here is a handy and comprehensive list of ideas to get you started. 1. Historic Cold Spring Village Ever wonder what it was like to live in Cape May 200 years ago? The answer can be found at this open-air living history museum, a seven-minute drive from town. Through interactive, educational and hands-on activities, visitors can make a connection with the past by experiencing it. The many authentically restored homes, amid idyllic shaded areas, make it hard to not feel like Abe Lincoln’s in office… and it’s even easier
when the Civil War re-enactment rolls into town. There is a themed event every weekend — Cold Spring is a can’t-miss for history buffs. Give them a call at (609) 898-2300 or visit their website at www.hcsv.org. 2. They even have a bar onboard! For more information or to book a reservation, call 800-64-FERRY or visit www.capemaylewesferry.com. 4. The First Resort Exhibit The First Resort by author Ben Miller is the basis for this exhibit sponsored by the MidAtlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) at the Carriage House Gallery at the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington Street. “Cape May’s 20th Century Renaissance: From the Pages of The First Resort” brings to life the key turning point in Cape May’s 20th century history. Visitors to the exhibit will be treated to rare photographs, video and a multitude of artifacts showcasing the years immediately before and after the city’s Urban Renewal movement. The exhibit will be open daily through November 4 and admission is free. Gallery hours vary. Call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org.
Page 92 5. Whale and Dolphin Watching Dolphins are fairly common in the waters off Cape May, but it’s still a big thrill to see these beautiful creatures. Cape May Whale & Dolphin Watch and Research Center offers you the best chance to see them up close. And, as the name implies, you might even see a whale. Tours take off from Wilson Avenue. If the ship is docked you can see it on your left as you cross the small bridge before the Lobster House on your way out of town. For directions or more information, call (609) 898-0055 or visit them on the web at www.capemaywhalewatch.com. 6. Historic Haunts House Tour Get into the Victorian spirit on a guided tour of the historic (and some say haunted) Physick Estate, and learn about the Victorians’ fascination with spiritualism, as well as today’s modern ‘“ghost-hunting” methods. A Shoebie’s Life
H
A new advice column on vacationing in Cape May... by Irving Spiff, Jr
ELLO, my name is Irving and I am a shoebie. For the uninformed, a shoebie is a nickname for anyone who isn’t considered a true local. If you weren’t born in Cape May or dont’ have a diploma from Cape May High or Lower Cape May Regional, then you, too, are a shoebie. Being a shoebie isn’t a bad thing, as long as you do it the right way. This week, the name of the game is beating the three-day minimum that hotels, motels, B&Bs, boarding houses, bird houses, chicken coops and garden sheds promote during the season. There is a right and a wrong way to handle this situation. The wrong way is to raise your voice or get into an argument. By being unpleasant, you have taken away any incentive the reservation clerk has to help you. I’ve seen it happen and in one case, I heard it over a speaker phone. A woman screamed and yelled about how the hotel WAS going to accommodate her, because she was so important and they didn’t want
to lose her business. A look at the smile on the face of the desk clerk told me that she was going to be sorely disappointed, and she was. The clerk told me he gets calls like that almost every day in the season and as soon as they get nasty, he stops listening. Then he gave me a piece of information so valuable that I should charge you for it. He explained to me that there is a way to get around the rule — BE POLITE to the person on the other end of the phone. Just like when
you get pulled over by the police, kindness and respect go a long way. And don’t just be polite, prepare to be flexible. You can’t expect to call last minute during the peak sesason and get what you want. However, chances are good that there are gaps in the schedule, like a two-day opening between existing reservations. Maybe a family books the room from Sunday to Thursday. Another books the same room for a week from Saturday to Saturday. That means the room is open Thursday and Friday, and the hotel is potentially losing money. So, when you’re on the phone with the reservation clerk and they tell you there’s a three-day minimum, politely ask if there are any upcoming gaps in the schedule. If you’ve treated them well, nine times out of 10, they’ll go out of their way to help you. Sure, it’s a matter of luck, but the odds are in your favor. If all else fails and you can’t find a room, call the Chamber of Commerce at (609) 8845508. They have people who are dedicated to the task and maintain an update of all open rooms.

So grab some friends, arrange a tournament and go golfing. 23. Buy Fresh Produce New Jersey is the Garden State for a reason. There’s some great farmland in the area, and markets like Duckie’s and No Frills on Broadway, along with Beach Plum Farm and Rea’s Farm on Stevens Street carry some of the freshest produce around. Which brings us to.... 24. Visit A Farmers Market Better yet, visit two farmers markets! On Tuesdays through August 28, the West Cape May Farmers Market is the place to be from 3-7:30pm for vendors, activities, great food and live entertainment. The market is located behind the West Cape May Firehall. Head over West Cape May bridge to the Cape May Lewes Ferry Terminal in North Cape May on Saturdays through August 25 from 9am1pm for local produce, baked goods, artisan crafts and more. 25. Parasail You don’t need to be a daredevil to rise 500 feet above the ocean, nor do you need a pair of wings. Parasailing has become a popular pastime that lets you soar above the coast and see Cape May from a perspective most people will never enjoy. It may be a view to die for, but we can assure you that you won’t be risking anything – the boat captains are coast guard certified and extremely safe. There are two great options to choose from. East Coast Parasail in Cape May at Utsch’s Marina, (609) 898-8359; Atlantic Parasail at the Two Mile Landing restaurant and marina on Ocean Drive highway, (609) 522-1869. 26. Lighthouse Storytime Bring your children to the Education Center in Cape May Point State Park to listen to nautical tales and lighthouse adventure stories. Storytime is at 12pm every Sunday through September 2. Better yet, admission is free. For more information, call (609) 884-5404 or visit www. capemaymac.org.
27. Sunset Beach The name says it all — follow Sunset Boulevard until it ends, then watch the sun sink beyond the jutting concrete ship. “God Bless America” is played as a veteran’s casket flag is lowered each day from May until September. After the ceremony, grab some food at the Grille or enjoy the incredible deals in the gift shop. There’s a long beach strewn with Cape May diamonds, or play a round of minigolf at Sunset Beach! 28. Self-Guided Audio Tour of Cape May Discover the Historic District of Victorian Cape May at your own pace with hand-held audio units leading the way. The $10 tour package comes complete with a map and index for 96 historic buildings on 69 sites. To start off on your own tour, stop by the Hill House, located at 1048 Washington Street on the Emlen Physick Estate, from 9am-2:30pm. For more information, call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. 29. Cape Island Theatre Bearcat Bootleggers or 1912, both by Ray Crew, are the dinner and a show offerings by Cape Island Theatre at the Old Grange Restaurant in Historic Cold Spring Village. Dinner at 7:15, show at 8pm, discounted rate for kids, even a “dessert only” option. For more information, call (609) 8845404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. 30. Arcades A trip to the beachfront is simply not complete without a trip to the arcade. Treat your kids to all the flashing lights, beeps, bells, buzzers and videogames, or relive your own childhood memories. Cape May Arcade has two locations, one on Beach Avenue and Gurney, the other at Beach Avenue and Jackson Street. 31. Higbee Beach It used to be a bit of a scandalous place (nude bathers – gasp!). Not anymore... or, not usually. Follow New England Road until it ends, walk the path — aka Mosquito Alley —

Activity Of The Week
G
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Cape May by kayak.
ET close to Cape May’s wildlife in a kayak. In Victorian times, people took an interest in the natural world. Unfortunately, that interest took the form of collection, not conservation. “Preservation,” in the Victorian mindset, meant taxidermy, and a woman showed her love for birds by decorating hats with their feathers. These attitudes, and 20th century developments, contributed to the decline of wild bird populations. DDT, in particular, drastically reduced New Jersey’s osprey population. Ospreys are predators near the top of the food chain, and their health is an indicator of the overall health of the environment. In 1974, only 50 nesting pairs were found; thanks to conservation, researchers counted 486 pairs in 2009. You can see ospreys, egrets, herons and other wildlife by kayak. Rent one and explore Cape May’s marshes on your own, or take a tour. Cape May’s harbor offers a gentle introduction to kayaking, the ocean a challenge for the more expe-

base, offers rentals and a variety of tours. In addition to two daily tours, there are sunset tours on Tuesdays and Saturdays, full moon tours, allowing you to watch the sun set and the moon rise, and, for the more adventurous, a tour from the Cove, around the point into Delaware Bay, and up to Higbee Beach Wildlife Management Area. Call 609-884-5600 for reservations. Both shops will give you instruction, and lifejackets are included. No experience is necessary, and kayaking is fun for all ages. If you’re new, or nervous, stick to the area in front of the Fishermen’s Memorial, and don’t listen to kids who’ve been taking summer Nature Center classes — they don’t understand that statements like, “The sharks in the harbor are shorter than my arm,” are not reassuring. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, bug spray for evening tours, and one of those disposable waterproof cameras. Leave a towel in the car, and dress to get wet. Celebrate Cape May’s wild side with a kayak tour. Next week: Carnival Nights
rienced. Miss Chris Marina offers rentals and daily tours. Singles are $20 hour, doubles $30, or rent by the full or half day. Call 609-884-3351 or stop by Third Avenue and Wilson Drive — by the bridge coming into town — for more information. Aqua Trails, at the Nature Center on Delaware Avenue by the Coast Guard

Thursday, August 2, 2012 RECREATIONAL Cape May doesn’t just have to be about relaxing. If you’re looking for an energy boost, there are lots of physical activities for you to get out and try. Keep moving! 1. Golf Cape May National Golf Club has “three of the best holes in New Jersey” according to The Jersey Golfer and is nestled in 50 acres of private bird sanctuary. (Visit Cape May National at www.cmngc.com or call 609-884-1563.) But, if it’s your wedge that needs some work, Cape May Par 3 will let you play 18 holes for just $15.95. No bag? No problem. Cape May Par 3 rents clubs for just $1. Visit them at www.capemaypar3.com or call (609) 889-2600. 2. Bike Ride It’s no secret: Cape May is a biking town. Have you even tried to navigate the streets of Cape May during rush hour? It’s enough to make you want to start jogging to your destination. But have no fear; there are bike rentals that beat braking (and braking again, then honking, then braking once more). Try Cape Island Bikes at 727 Beach Avenue or 135 Sunset Boulevard, (609) 884-8011. 3. Nature Trails Next to the lighthouse in the Cape May Point State Park there are several trails weaving through ponds, dunes, marsh and forest. There are different levels of difficulty marked by colors and most of the trails have wooden walkways. Even on the longest trails, breathtaking scenes in a tranquil setting will make you wish it was longer. Just make sure you wear comfortable shoes. 4. Yoga Yoga on the beach is a beautiful thing, and Judy Heany of Balance Pilates, located at 600 Park Boulevard in West Cape May, has a whole dance card of choices. There are classes on the Jackson Street beach on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 8am. Over and above that, you can join a Bal-
ance class at the Montreal Inn and the Inn of Cape May (see the ad on this page for more details). Call Judy Heany at 609-884-3001. 5. Tennis The William J. Moore Tennis Club — named after the first black (as well as the oldest) tennis pro in America — rents rackets, balls and courts. It’s located next to the Physick Estate on beautiful tree-lined Washington Street, and there are always a variety of local characters up for a game, match, or set. The courts are open to the public daily for just $10 per hour and a half. For more information call (609) 8848986. 6. Horseback Riding At Hidden Valley Ranch, you can take lessons in the pastimes of heroes and kings under the watchful gaze of Nancy Hall and her daughter Angi Dickenson, who have nearly 70 years of combined equine experience. Saddle up. Call Hidden Valley Ranch at (609) 884-8205 for more information, or check them out on facebook. 7. Fishing Cape May is one of the busiest commercial fishing ports in the US. The sport fishing is big business, too... AND a whole lot of fun. South Jersey Marina boast the Murderer’s Row, a top-notch selection of boats with crews who know these waters better than anyone. Try the experienced team of Stalker Sport Fishing: (609) 231-9611, or the Miss Chris fleet: (609) 884-3939. For all your bait and tackle needs, stop by Jim’s Bait and Tackle on Route 109 by the harbor: (609) 884-3900. 8. Tidal Marsh Tour by Kayak Explore Cape May County’s most beautiful salt marsh via sit-on-top kayaks. It’s a great way to see nesting ospreys, herons, egrets and assorted crabs. There are two excellent options to choose from. Aqua Trails at 1600 Delaware Avenue in the Nature Center: (609) 884-5600, www.aquatrails.com, and Miss Chris Marina: (609) 884-3351, www.misschrismarina.com.

IVY is an adorable 8-month-old female Labrador-Pointer who weighs about 45 pounds. This little girl is special needs because she’s deaf, but is happy and good-natured, and deafness does not stop her from being the puppy she is! She’s very energetic, social, and quite trainable. Her deafness will require a little more effort from an owner, but Ivy can share a home with dogs, cats and kids! The adoption fee is $95.
«
DIESEL is waiting patiently for someone to take him to a forever home! He came from a home with other dogs, so would be okay with them, but tends to be dominant, and will probably be the alpha dog. He’s very sweet, knows a few tricks, and would be best in a home with older kids, if any, and no cats. If you think you could spare enough love for a guy like Diesel, stop in and give him a second chance! The adoption fee is $95.
«
CALLIE is a very sweet girl, and loves to play. Sometimes she gets a little carried away, and needs to be reminded of her manners; she also needs some leash training. If you spend the time to teach her, she’ll be a great girl. Callie knows a few tricks, and is eager to learn. She doesn’t do well with cats, but gets along with kids, and some dogs. If you think she’d be a good match for you, stop in the shelter. The adoption fee is $95.

CHICKY is waiting at the shelter to meet you. He is a very sweet little guy, but is a bit special. He has a bit of a head tilt, and has trouble with things being straight up. HIS week, we bid farewell to the antics in God of Carnage, and welcome the antics in The 39 Steps! Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of mayhem and you have The 39 Steps, a fast paced, suspenseful-romantic-comedy for anyone who loves theatre. In this twotime Tony Award winner, a cast of four hilariously reenacts over 150 eccentric characters from Hitchcock’s 1935 thriller using a few props, split-second quick changes, and lots of theatrical creativity. The half-price preview for this hilarious show on August 8 is already sold out, but tickets are still available for opening night on August 9, with a starstudded after party at Sea Salt. Bird Droppings
H
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
OW would you like a bit of good news? “Sure,” you say. “It would be a welcome change.” Okay, here it is: Great Egret, Snowy Egret, Glossy Ibis, Black-bellied Plover, Greater Yellowlegs, Willet, Sanderling, Shortbilled Dowitcher, Laughing Gull, Herring Gull, Great Black-backed Gull, Common Tern, Forsters Tern, Black Skimmer. And you’re thinking, okay, so? They’re all birds of the New Jersey shore. You see them all the time. Yes. Precisely. You can see them all the time. Providing of course, that you know where to look and what to look for. In Cape May, in 2012, all these bird species are part of the tapestry of life on the Jersey Shore, as much a part of the landscape as wind, waves, and sand. If they weren’t here, maybe you would miss them. And, if you were to have visited the New Jersey shore back when this place truly was a Victorian vacation retreat, you definitely would have missed them. Back in the late 1800s, most of these birds were no longer found in the state - at all. They’d
been...extirpated. Extirpate. tr. v. 1. to pull up by the roots. 2. To destroy; exterminate. That’s right. Back when people went swimming fully clothed, you could sit on a Cape May beach and search in vain for a gull, tern, or sandpiper on the beach. South Jersey, like much of North America, was a wildlife vacuum. What happened? Oh, lots of stupid,
wasteful, exploitative things. When Henry Hudson first sailed into Delaware Bay, this place was wildlife rich, an Eden of living things. Europeans were simplyagog at all the cool birds and animals they were seeing. Marshes so festooned with nesting birds that they garnered names like Great Egg Harbor and Egg Island Point. Flights of Passenger Pigeons that darkened the skies, and forests filled with “bustards and fowle [sic].” In less than 300 years the nesting colonies were gone, diminished into non-existence by people collecting eggs. Ducks, geese, and finally (when the larger birds were hunted out) shorebirds were slaughtered for market. Slaughtered in the spring and slaughtered in the fall. Some were shot, some were netted, some were simply picked up and thrown in sacks. Maybe you’ve heard of the term “going on a snipe hunt.” There really was a time when people went out carrying torches, approached roosting f locks of birds, grabbed them while distracted, bit

Bird Droppings ? From Page 119 them in the neck, tossed them into sacks. Saved powder and shot. Then came the millinery trade, and the extermination of millions of herons and egrets for no other reason than plumes. Egret plumes in ladies’ hats were all the rage in Victorian times. After a couple of decades of slaughter, those hats were the only place to see egret feathers — and sadly, sometimes the whole bird. Just about the time the Victorian era ended, a group of indignant people had had enough. The very same society women who tired of seeing birds slaughtered for fashion kick-started the conservation movement and the resulting Audubon movement. New Jersey Audubon was founded in 1897, just one of those organizations that were part of the conservation movement. Good thinking, good legislation, and a hundred years of recovery was all it took to restore a measure of what we had. Good news for you. Get out there and enjoy the sights, sounds, and birds that great granddad have for love or money — unless they were on the head of great grandma! If you need help identifying those herons, egrets, ibis, terns, and plo-
Birds were routinely killed during Victorian times just to acquire plumes for ladies’ hats vers, you can join Seymore on any Monday morning walk through the South Cape May Meadows. Just meet by 7:30am in The Nature Conservancy parking lot on Sunset Blvd. Loaner binoculars are available at no cost; the walk is $6 for CMBO or NJ Audubon members; $10 for non-members. If you want to discover these beautiful birds on your own, head over to the Cape May Bird Observatory — THE place for all of your nature needs. Get a birding map, checklist and daily walk schedule. Talk with our staff about the best spot for
birding, check out optics, field guides, and anything else you might need — or don’t know you need yet! CMBO is located at 701 East Lake Drive in Cape May Point, 609884-2736, and is open from 9:30am to 4:30pm daily, except Tuesdays. Our staff are always willing to help with questions. Scan the bookshelves for bargains in the used and vintage books section, look at the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise, including a terrific lithograph done just for the CMBO, or just browse. Check the sighting sheets for what’s being seen out in the field, check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars, or sit outside on our garden benches and enjoy the birds and the Lake Lily view. If you can’t make it in person, visit us at BirdCapeMay.org — where birding Cape May is only a click away! Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at CMBO) he weaves information, insight anden fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for the New York Times.
