Fishing For The Big Prizes The 28th annual Mid-Atlantic Tournament, held August 18-23 and based out of the Canyon Club Marina, proved once again to be the top sportfishing event in the region. Drawing 156 boats boats from all over the country, participants competed in dramatic fashion for a record $3.52 million in prize money. In the end, there were nearly three dozen winners in various categories, and seven checks of more than six figures were issued. The heaviest blue marlin caught? 630 pounds! And a special shout-out to local boys Greg Lentz and Jim Foulke of the Trust Me Too, who walked with more than $4,000 in prize money.

SOME INTERESTING CAPE MAY TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS

Weird Sea Creature

Did You Know?

What We’re Reading

The Pointed Sawfish has an ACTUAL SAW on its face. Oh, and that saw is covered with specialized pores that allow the creature to pick up on electrical fields produced by prey. Next, the saw is used to stun and impale a target so that it can be torn apart by 20 pairs of “teeth” that are actually just weird scales used for chewing. Sweet dreams!

Now lauded as having one of the best dining scenes in the state, Cape May wasn’t always a food destination. Prior to the 1980s, the town was home only to a smattering of casual eateries, the major player being the now-iconic Lobster House. Leading the fine dining revolution was The Mad Batter. Legend has it that the late Harry Kulkowitz, US Army vet and the former owner of a Philadelphia art gallery, won the restaurant and attached Carroll Villa Hotel (pictured) on Jackson Street in a poker game in 1976. That’s not exactly true, though Harry DID conceive of the idea for this Cape May staple during a poker game.

Normal People By Sally Rooney This is a story about transformative relationships and two unlikely companions whose lives are complicated by class.

Here’s what the EZ team had for dinner this week

E

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. Where We Ate: The Curry Inne Indian restaurant on Pacific Avenue in Wildwood. The occasion: Exit Zero owner Jack is from Scotland, where people order Indian food like Americans order pizza — that is, habitually. So he had a serious craving. And not for the fusionstyle Indian he serves at his own restaurant, Exit Zero Filling Station, though that’s pretty great, too, if we do say so ourselves. The owners: From West Bengal. So that “from India with love” slogan? It’s the real deal. The vibe: Authentic, clean and welcoming. We opted for takeout on this day, though we’ve had excellent service on past visits while dining in. The food: Chicken tandoori (which is chicken marinated in yogurt and spices), veggie pakora (with a perfect ratio of fried coating to savory filling), bombay aloo (or tasty chunks of potatoes stir fried with bell peppers, cumin seeds and spices), malai kofta (vegetable dumplings in a cream sauce with nuts and raisins), and chicken tikka saag (grilled chicken in a creamy spinach bowl of deliciousness). The bread: We got a side of peshwari naan to accompany our meal. We loved it. And so did the Exit Zero puppies, who also got a taste. And they are some fussy mutts. The meal: Dinner. Then brunch the next day. Followed in short order by lunch. Then an after-lunch grazing session. Then a pre-dinner snack. We couldn’t get any work done because we kept getting up to eat our leftovers, so we’ll be invoicing you, Curry Inne, for a day of lost work, thankyouverymuch. The conversation: Apparently, there’s a giant, bulit-to-spec Noah’s Ark replica in Kentucky. Who knew. It’s part of an Ark Excursion theme park that includes zip lines and a restaurant. And you thought Wildwood had all the amusements! The consensus: Order takeout and curry on.

The combination of Cinsault and Grenache give the wine a great duo of savory and red fruit qualities. Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence

’ve had a couple of drinks, so this could get very interesting, or not as interesting as I think it is because it only seems interesting because I’ve had a couple of drinks. Either way, I hope my editor is awake. Maybe your politics are stupid? Or maybe YOUR politics are stupid? Or maybe ALL our politics are stupid and they just want us all mad at each other becaue that’s how they win? That said, I would totally rock a NUKE THE HURRICANES bumper sticker. Is my beard TOO lustrous? On Sunday, me, Henry and Owen had a Shoobie Day, hitching the Cape May-Lewes Ferry (not gonna lie, took me six attempts to type that) to hit those Delaware outlets, which I’d heard are cheaper, but are actually not cheaper at all but at least there’s no sales tax? I guess? Anyway, it was a Very O’Brien Outing, in that, on the trip over, we had to wait 20 minutes for a broken down car to be removed from the outgoing ferry. Then, as we queued up to come home, the car in front of us, which had been rocking some Springsteen, went down with a dead battery, probably from

rocking the Springsteen, so… worth it? This was, of course, followed by a 15-minute delay in departing Delaware because the hydraulic foot ramp would not retract. Annoying, yes, but pretty on-brand for us. These first four paragraphs took two hours to write... There was a pretty good guitar player (Al Frantic?) on board who played the Squeeze classic “Is That Love”, which made me really like him. As I dropped a few bucks in the tip jar I told him they’re my favorite band and he said, “Really? Cool. My wife and I met them a

4th ANNUAL

few years ago. Went to a steak dinner and they gave us front row seats to their show.” I now hate him. Also, the term “favorite band” is subjective to whom I’m talking to at the moment and what mood I’m in. I’m currently in a Billy Joel Revival phase, remembering songs I’d forgotten. Forget the hits and listen to “Sleeping With the Television On.” UPDATE: As I wrote that paragraph, the ferry bumped into a wall, which is fine, this is fine, everything is fine. I want to use my fingerprint to access all my technology, but I’ve seen too many movies and am deathly afraid a terrorist will cut off my hand to get that $443 I have in the bank. (Probably less by the time you read this.) Is this column over yet? Bought some Scott Tissue toilet paper at my Favorite Store on Earth, the North Cape May Dollar General, and noticed that the packaging bragged “1 roll lasts 1 week!”Ha! Clearly the Scott Tissue family never had three teenage sons. If you can sip from a bottle of Gatorade

you have more willpower than I. Narrator: The author of this column has just fallen asleep. I’M UP! Narrator: The author is now awake. I really, really wanted to like Blinded by the Light. I just… didn’t. What’s Italian for schadenfreude? Because that’s what I get when my wife Cathrine and son Jackson start yelling at each other about work stuff, at which they are both great. She is the general manager at Exit Zero Filling Station, he is a busser/ host/ shop dude at said Filling Station and everybody loves them… except themselves. (Ooh, that’s deep.) He is, without doubt, the child her mother wished on her. The Maloik is real, people. Kudos to Terry Dougherty, who made his debut with The Strangers, my Billy Joel tribute, last Friday at the Watering Hull in Stone Harbor, and played his ass off. Not only did he hit every note, but did so after just dropping his incredibly talented son, Quinn, off at Muhlenberg College in PA. In my considered opinion, Terry D is one of the most underrated musicians in Cape May. Thank you to the Geno White Trio, who play every Sunday at Iron Pier Craft House (above Cabanas, formerly Martini Beach), who stopped down every week to bump fists with the Terry O’Brien Band at Carney’s, and who FINALLY brought Exit 0 (unrelated) film director E.B. Hughes down to give me a firm, nondescript handshake and awkward man-hug because we’re best friends(?). Exit 0 is screening in Atlantic City in October. Keep an eye out. Lots of locals in there you might recognize. Congratulations to the asshole who invented me paying $2 to get my own money out of the ATM. You win, universe. In EZ delivery news, last week I finally vanquished the Shoppe guy, and had my sights on the TWICM (This Week in Cape May) dude. We finally faced off in front of West Side Market at 3:30am last Thursday, he with his, I with mine. I looked at the

August 29, 2019 bastard and said, “Hey, Mikey!” He said, “Hey Terry!” Turns out it was my friend Mikey Alimo, former Ghost Ship zombie and allaround good guy. But I still hate him… just a little. Speaking of my delivery route, I’ve been going out pretty early these days, around 2:303:00am, and I’ve noticed a lot fewer furry animals intimidating me and a lot more furry bugs making my trip a total nightmare. Evil animals conspiring against me? That’s one thing. 20,000,000 spiders targeting my face? That’s another. It’s possible it was just one cobweb at Cape Island Home & Gardens (home of 65.432 ½ plants), I’ve been known to hyperbolize, but it sure felt like 20,000,000 spiders. Cape Island H&G is an awesome place to buy plants and things... just don’t wander in there at 3am. It’s cobwebby. Next Monday, September 2 is the big Terry O’Brien Band OPEN MIC JAM at Carney’s, 3pm-7pm. Come sing or play your favorite Beatles, Billy Joel, Bruce Sprigsteen or Prince songs with the band, or just play a few songs you like. Point being, we’d love to see you there, professional or amateur. Anything to keep me from getting yelled at by Joe Carney. By the time you read this, my eldest child, Owen Freedom O’Brien, will be spending his last day at home before heading off to Rowan University and his next chapter. We love you, we’ll miss you, and we love you. You are exactly the son I hoped for, a good man, and the best son a mother could want. To wish you well on your next step is to not do it justice We know you’ll do well and impact the world in your own way, with your singular wit and wisdom. It’s good we only have a day to linger on this, because as wrecked as your mom will be, and she will be wrecked, it is in you that I see the better part of myself The me I wish I was, the me I wish I could be, the better me I that will make the world a better place. Peace, Love and Freedom. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

ongratulations! If you are reading this, it means you are the one in a thousand Exit Zero readers selected for a special treat. That means a total of 100 lucky readers (a little-known fact is that this newspaper has the widest global reach of any currently publishing in the English language. Some are snapped up in Cape May, in a rush akin to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Sale. But the vast majority are shipped, flown and smuggled around the globe, to be read aloud in market squares, pored over by news analysts, dissected by movie moguls and comedians eager for hot new content, and shredded as cat litter, due to the exceptional quality of the paper stock. I was once told that the latter category accounts for 98 per cent of copies, but I am assuming that was a rumor put out by jealous competitors, such as the Washington Post). The vast majority of readers are currently chortling over my account of that time I wore my transparent Speedo to the beach on Labor Day, and the riots and Hollywood offers that resulted. But not you. You were selected by our undercover detectives (look up, over the top of

this newspaper, taking care only to have the top of your head and eyes visible. Now look right a little, then up. See? Now, casually, go back to reading) because you possess the right mix of panache, intelligence, good humor and robust genes to suit our needs. No need to panic — this is not The Wicker Man, or that other more recent documentary, Midsommar, and you will not meet your end in a burning basket. No, you have been picked to boost the Cape May gene pool. Did you not wonder how it came to be that so many citizens are

Find Your Way Back...

near-perfect specimens of man and womanhood? This is no coincidence, I assure you. Centuries of careful selection and a cunning algorithm that helps choose teens from all over the world to come work here in Summer, have let to Cape May being officially the Home of the Most Beautiful People. And that’s official. But time takes its toll, and some of our more fertile members (as it were) are old, or dead, or both of these things. And we need to keep our population up. In the past we used to simply borrow visitors, and hypnotize them to think they had lived here all their lives, but the “internet” age made that harder to pull off, and so now we are properly legal, at least by local laws. You will, once you have finished this newspaper, set it down neatly, and make your way to the Cape May Relocation Center, which is cunningly disguised as Exit Zero Filling Station. The code words there are, “Fill her up, and give me everything on the menu”. Once done, you will, if you are still selected, be quietly taken aside and given a wonderful home, and a gorgeous partner or few.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the West Cape May Tomato Festival

he tomato is the star of the summer table. Celebrate it, in all its radiance, at the West Cape May Tomato Festival on August 31. Stardom didn’t come easily to the tomato. Family issues threatened to hold it back — the tomato is a nightshade, and some of its cousins have a dangerous reputation. Belladonna is the real killer in the family. Mandrake was once considered both an aphrodisiac and a poison. Then, Roman physician Galen gave the tomato the Latin name, Solanum lycopersicum, or wolf peach, because he thought you could use it to summon a werewolf. It’s hard to shed that kind of negativity and make your way onto a dining table. Good looks help — the tomato was grown in England as a decorative plant for years before it was finally accepted as a “kitchen” vegetable. Pizza — allegedly invented in the 1800s — was an excellent publicist. Another promotional opportunity came with the invention of tomato chowder by Maria Parloa. A man named Campbell found her recipe in 1872’s The Appledore Cook Book and sold it to

America as canned soup. A star was born. There are still occasional stains on the tomato’s reputation. It remains the weapon of choice for audiences to convey displeasure in old movies, and it is the jetsam on the road of many a car chase. A small town in Spain has made tomato tossing a tradition — the Tomatina is an annual tomato battle complete with strict rules, like tomatoes must be pre-squished before they are tossed to avoid injury. It sounds savage, but a tomato toss is more environmentally friendly than a water balloon fight, and city managers insist that the citric acid in the tomatoes, properly

hosed off, helps to clean the streets. The participants likely don’t come out unscathed, but the stains are souvenirs of all the fun. Like many stars, the tomato can be reclusive. Give it its own space, stored on a shady counter, away from other fruits and vegetables. (It would be rude to mention the off-gassing that will turn your cucumbers and peaches into mush. Even superstars have their bad sides.) Let it hide its face by placing it upside down — the stem side “shoulders” are sturdier and less prone to bruising than the other side. Don’t put it in the refrigerator unless its past its prime. The West Cape May Tomato Festival in Wilbraham Park runs from 9 to 5 on Saturday, August 31. Live music starts at 9:30. You’ll find tomatoes in all forms — whole, pies, soups, salads, cakes, ketchups and clothing. Proceeds benefit the WCM Shade Tree Commission. And, if you haven’t had your fill after visiting, pick up more treats from Chez Michel on Park Boulevard or Beach Plum Bakery next to the West End Garage

Inside City Hall

Susan Tischler on the happenings and hecklings at Cape May City Council QUOTE OF THE NIGHT “Don’t let this council become a premature bitch society. …Stop this bickering.” Dennis Crowley, resident and former head of the Cape May Taxpayers Association, referring to council’s inability to agree on anything, let alone construction of a new Public Safety Building. Oooooh, What Happened? It is safe to say there were no kumbaya moments in this meeting, which once again dispatched its official business in about 70 minutes and that included a 50-minute presentation but still ended up a three hour and 30 plus minutes session. Count me out Freshman councilmember Stacy Sheehan dashed any hope of council passing a bond ordinance on construction of a proposed Public Safety Building (PSB) last Tuesday when she publicly announced she would not vote for such an ordinance if the police and fire departments are going to be housed under the same roof, which is the current configuration. Citing a previous

3-2 vote to hire USA Architects to handle the project design, she implied that councilman Zach Mullock would not vote for the project either. “We need a bond. We need four votes. I will not be that fourth vote as it stands now with putting both the fire and police departments in one building.” In making her case, she cited several reasons, among them size. “In order for the police and fire [departments] to grow in the future, they need a bigger building. We should not be building for now but for the future.” She said that in order to make the building big enough, it would have to go up

two to three stories and ruin the streetscape of the historic area. The parking, she said, is also insufficient to accommodate the employees and the public, compounded by the fact, she said, that there is much talk about moving the library over to the Franklin Street School. She concluded that the project would be done at the expense of the taxpayers. “Yes, we need a building,” she said, “but at what cost?” What brought this on? There was supposed to be a public meeting with council and the PSB Advisory Committee in which the architectural firm of choice – USA Architects – were to present the various proposals and the cost estimates for the project the previous Tuesday – August 13. The meeting was cancelled by a – that’s right – 3-2 poll-by-phone vote. WHY? Allegedly the cost estimates came in too high as in going from an estimated $15 million cost to $18-$20 plus million. Councilmember Mullock expressed concern over the postponement of the meeting, calling its cancellation “inappropriate,” again insisting that numer-

Page 66 ous town hall meetings be held to inform the public of the progress of the project – or lack thereof. “It is long overdue,” he said, “to have these discussions in public. Council should be handling these meetings.” He called once again for the dissolution of the PSB Advisory Committee. Was that it? Oh no. Mullock then went on to cite town after town that he said managed to build a public service facility under $4 million. He was interrupted by councilmember Shaine Meier who claimed Mullock’s references went back to 2009 and that they referred to a volunteer fire facility. In other words – no sleepovers. Later, during Meier’s comment period, reading from a prepared statement, he urged council to not “derail” the proposed PSB by employing “disinformation” – a direct right jab to Mullock. He also refuted the claims of Sheehan and Mullock that the public has been kept out of the loop stating, “there is no effort to exclude the public.” He argued that the postponement of the meeting was quite logical in that the current estimates had to be revisited before presenting them to the public. Later on, Mullock disputed the “disinformation” charge, stating that they were projects provided by USA Architects for their RFP (Referral For Proposal) and were projects completed in 2017. He said all seven architectural firms provided “hundreds” of examples of like projects that were built for under $4 million. “If we build a public service building that we can’t afford to staff, we’re making a mistake.” Is THAT it? Nope. Decorum seemed to fly out the door. Meier, the council liaison for the PSB Advisory Committee, was out of sorts with those critical of the PSB process and the proposed project. Or, as former vice-chair of the PSB Advisory Committee Barney Dougherty said later in the meeting: “Shaine, I don’t know where you’ve been all day, but you are some wound up.” When the president of the Cape May Volunteer Fire Department (CMVFD) Jim Matthews spoke in favor of the need to build a new facility to house the firemen because of mold conditions and leaks, Sheehan read a report that said the levels were “acceptable.” Meier derided the “acceptable” terminology, concluding, “Don’t you give a crap about someone who’s coming to save your life?” Did you say Referendum? CMVFD President Matthews proposed a referendum to let the voters decide how much they want to spend, where they want to spend it and when. This is a suggestion that has been touted by the late PSB Advisory Committee Chair Jerry Gaffney, the former vice-chair Barney Dougherty, Cape May Taxpayers

Association (TPA) spokesman Jules Rauch and many others. The Case of the Leaking Emails Jules Rauch, who delivered a blistering criticism of the city’s handling of the PSB project at a July 23 meeting, came before council again as a private citizen to clarify that the TPA did not oppose construction of a facility but opposed the process by which it was being planned. He also cited any number of other problems ranging from hotels which give out beach tags willy nilly to the need for construction of a desal plant; and called into question the need for more strategic planning. At the end of his comments, Meier said, “I feel like I’m hearing my emails from the podium. …My question is who is leaking information to you from his table?” Rauch shot back, “Not one person. And frankly, if they were, it’s none of your damn business. Do you understand what public information is?” Meier said it was a violation of client-official privilege. Mullock reminded Mr. Meier that those “clients” are “constituents.” Advisory Warning Dennis Crowley, former TPA president an past critic of the Convention Hall “process,” took to the podium to warn council about their wrangling and advised them to avoid a visit from the Ghost of Capital Projects Past or, as he put it, the “disaster of Convention Hall.” He said the animosity from those days (It was demol-

August 29, 2019 ished in 2010; reopened in 2012) is still there today and it resulted from that process. The Public Safety Building, he said, “could be the next disaster for this town.” He said formulation of an advisory committee “is not the Public Safety Building. It’s the beginning of the process.” He further warned council not to confuse the opinions of the committee with “the will of the people.” Finally, he said it was “ludicrous” to put a modern police department in the middle of the historic block and so doing was “an invitation to disaster.” Meier, as was his custom all night, argued against Crowley’s points underscoring that the architects’ work is not yet done and not yet ready for public scrutiny. The result? Crowley returned to the podium to deliver his final advisory warning: “Let’s not let this council descend into the very thing I cautioned them never to be and that is become a premature bitch society.” Pardon the Interruption When former councilmember Roger Furlin stepped up to the podium, he said he felt he was “interrupting the conversation,” meaning the PSB project, but wanted to talk about the much-criticized committees and how they are formed. He suggested they be formed by ordinance not resolution and be held accountable to the Open Public Meetings Act which he said would advertise them to the public and allow comment from council members who are not on the committee. Well – is that all? Councilmember Mullock reported that one of the city’s pumps for one of the wells broke down the week before – Thursday or Friday, according to City Manager Neil Young, and water had to be supplied by Lower Township. This is the second time in two years something has gone awry. Young said a new pump was being installed the next day and they were happy to have a contingency plan in place but also were looking at a $5-$7 million renovation process down the road to upgrade the water treatment facility. Show and Tell Cape May Police Department Chief Tony Marino, who was previously criticized by councilmember Sheehan for paying overtime to a salaried officer, appeared before council with statistical visuals regarding the plight he has faced in not being able to recruit new officers and the need for even more than he is currently budgeted for. There are now supposed to be three officers per squad. Because of a shortage of officers, combined with sick leave and retirements, they are having a tough time manning the shifts without overtime. Ideally, he said for the future, it would be better to budget for four officers per squad.

The Movie Column

“A Ghost Story” is reviewed by arts columnist Tom Sims

M

any times, this column brings you the flix you missed (cheap plug for my book at flixyoumissed.com), but file this review under “flix I missed.” A Ghost Story (2017) can be passed over as a simple horror flick if you’re not careful. The ghost featured in ads is a classic white sheet with two holes for eyes. Yeah... like the kind in the Charlie Brown Halloween special. And yes that’s probably why I passed on it the first time I saw it advertised. But I watched it recently, and it was incredibly moving. Casey Affleck plays the husband and Rooney Mara his wife. We see the two in their one-story house (which is the third main character). There are some odd apparitions that appear, lights and shadows on the wall, picture frames falling. The husband is tragically killed in a car accident and he soon appears as a ghost wandering the hospital hallways. A door appears from nowhere seemingly to “the other side,” but the ghost refuses to pass. Instead, the sheet drifts to the house where

he and his wife lived — and the tethered journey begins. He is in the house all day, every day. Many of the scenes take their time in long (prolonged) single-framed shots. How the story unfolds from there is deliberate with passages that are timeless. Yep... it’s that deep. There is very little dialogue, making this one of those rare stories that is best told on film. I’m not sure exactly what moved me so strongly about this film. All I can say is that part of me sympathizes

with the ghost. Haven’t I been just as stifled in my own head? Didn’t I spend eternities rambling in my own mind? Our ghost spends most of his time stuck in the house. He sees another ghost through the window at a house nearby. Only subtitles indicate the two are talking. “Who are you waiting for?” the husband asks (paraphrasing). “I don’t remember,” the other ghost responds. The other ghost is played by director David Lowery. Of course you wouldn’t know because he’s got a big sheet over his head. The film takes some seriously poignant diversions through time and space — some centered on new tenants of the house. My favorite is a guest at a party held after the ghost’s wife has moved out. Will Oldham plays the part... and he clearly has most of the lines in the film. He’s pontificating about life and legacy and the party goers all seem to be ignoring him for the most part. But our ghost intensely listens. Nicely done. For a fresh perspective on the haunted house, catch this film!

TAURUS: You will watch old Bob Ross episodes on repeat because you find the cadence of his voice soothing. You, too, will be inspired to paint happy little trees and wear your hair like a cloud. GEMINI: You will attend the annual Tomato Festival in Wilbraham Park on August 31. You will attempt to juggle with three heirloom varieties, and people nearby will assume you are having a stroke. CANCER: You will be accosted by a child in Rotary Park who will ask: “How much does a pirate charge for corn on the cob?” You will be stumped until it hits you over cocktails at Iron Pier: “Buck-an-ear!” LEO: You will begin taking ballet classes with the Jersey Cape Dance and Gymnastics Academy. You will soon appear alongside Neil Patrick Harris in your Broadway debut. VIRGO: You will purchase a loaf from the Bread Lady on Sunset Boulevard. You will decide carbohydrates can’t be evil after all when packaged in such a pillowy, crispy, homemade way. LIBRA: You will, in an attempt to deepen your tan in the waning days of summer, cover yourself in butter and roller skate through the streets of Cape May wearing little clothing. Hungry woodland creatures from Cape May Point State Park will trail you through the historic district. SCORPIO: You will spend Labor Day reading up on conditions during the Industrial Revolution that led to the holiday’s rise. Kidding — you’ll sing karaoke in your backyard while grilling West Side Market burgers. SAGITTARIUS: You will hold a conch shell up to your ear. Instead of the ocean, you will hear Tom Cruise yelling “Show me the money!” CAPRICORN: The caps lock key will get stuck on your keyboard. Henceforth, all your texts will be yelly. AQUARIUS: You will adopt a dog from the Cape May County Animal Shelter who enjoys playing ball. You will name him Snarls Barkley. PISCES: You will grow increasingly giddy knowing that the Eagles are set to avenge an early postseason exit. You will begin doing reconnaissance to determine which bar provides best viewing options for September 8.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My husband and I are newlyweds. He has joint custody of his three-year-old daughter whom I just adore. The last time she stayed with us, she asked me if she could call me mom. I distracted her rather than answer. I don’t want in any way to drive more of a wedge than there already is between her mother and I, but I also don’t want to hurt my stepdaughter or discourage the love we feel for each other. How do you think I should handle this? — Adoring Stepmother Dear Adoring It is better that your stepdaughter does not call you mom for any number of reasons. First, she has a mom. Second, her outpouring of love for you will only boomerang on you both when her mother gets wind of it. Why not make a game of coming up with a nickname that shows

Wise answers to perplexing questions

her affection for you but does not threaten her relationship with her mother? She is so vulnerable, and it is up to you to navigate these dicey waters so that her life with her mother does not become a landmine. Strengthen your own relationship with her by going to Cape Atlantic Book Company and pick up a bedtime book like Pat Zietlow Miller’s Be Kind. Dear Answer Lady I have been dating a woman, whom I like very much, for nearly a year. She told me from the get-go that she did not believe in sex

before marriage and that she would not date anyone after one year. If she wasn’t engaged by then, she would move on. I thought it was all talk and a ploy to get a wedding ring, but now that the year is coming to an end, I think she means it. She certainly has stuck to her guns regarding pre-marital sex. Here’s the thing — I’m not sure I’m ready for marriage, but I fear come October 31, I’ll be toast if I don’t have a ring in my pocket. What should I do? — Ambivalent Beau Dear Ambivalent You cannot allow yourself to be blackmailed into marriage. On the other hand, isn’t a year enough time to know if this is the woman you may want to spend your life with? Maybe marriage isn’t for you no matter who the woman is. She probably is thinking about children as well. How about this — imagine your life without her. Follow that trail and you will probably come up with the answer to your dilemma. Take your girlfriend to the Washington Inn’s wine bar and order a flight of wine and a couple of apps. Now imagine doing that with someone else.

Bird Droppings

L

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

ast week, the winds turned northwest, temperatures and humidity dropped. Beachgoers driven to don sweatshirts and suffer goose bumps on exposed parts thought, “Well, there goes summer in Cape May.” Me? I got that ol’ Cape May feeling. Cape May to me and tens of thousands of birders is precisely about northwest winds and cooler temperatures, the winds that drive the hosts of southbound migrants into the land funnel that is South Jersey and on to its terminus, right here. So even though the calendar said “summer,” I donned a jacket and headed for the hawk watch platform at Cape May Point. It was quiet and I was the only one wearing binoculars, a fashion statement the next cold front will resolve. By September, if you stand on the platform without binoculars, you stand in the minority. The birds this cool morning in August sided with the season. Assorted terns and Laughing Gulls, but when you looked at the gulls closely, you noted that many of the adults were losing their black hoods. Sum-

mer was passing as were a few migrating Tree Swallows and Red-winged Blackbirds. It wasn’t until mid-morning that another season-pushing hawk watcher arrived. I recognized him as an autumn regular but could not call up his name. “George,” he said, extending his hand. I came to learn that George lived north of Philly, much closer to Hawk Mountain, yet had chosen to drive 90 minutes to be in Cape May instead of that other celebrated Mecca. I was hoping for a migrating Kestrel or

two, but what we got was the raptorial topof-the-line as a juvenile Peregrine loomed overhead. The long-winged, broad-tailed silhouette is idyosyncratic to all who cast their eyes to the sky. Content with my Peregrine, I left shortly after the bird. George, facing a long commute, left, too, both of us vowing to be back, ferried south on the next northwest wind. Let there be a bounty of them, and may the coming season in Cape May exceed all expectations. Will we break 200 Peregrines this year? Will we be treated to one or more Swainson’s Hawks? Sorry that your season is ending, you rank-and-file-tourists, ours is just getting started. Three months of raptor-filled skies at the “raptor capital of North America.” Join us. But if you come without binoculars, you are considered under dressed. Check the winds. Anything from west to northeast works, but north to northwest winds are optimal. Bring high expectations. See you on the platform. I’ll be the guy calling out the Peregrines.

ROSIE is a ten year old girl whose family could no longer take care of her. It is a difficult adjustment for her to come to the shelter after living with a family for so long, so she is looking for a home that will welcome her. She would be a good companion for someone who wants a dog who has outgrown the puppy antics. Adopt Rosie today!

DIXIE is a mature, active girl who was brought to the shelter as a stray. She has quickly become a staff and volunteer favorite due to her affectionate and sweet disposition. She loves to go for walks and has good leash manners. Dixie is looking for a family that will open their hearts for this well behaved lady and give her the happy home she deserves.

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

DEJA was supposed to be fixed and then put back outside, but was offered a chance. She was given the opportunity to prove that she can be someone’s special kitty. That she could stay warm indoors and not have to fight for her scraps. Deja’s gentle demeanor is what saved her life from the outdoors and is what will change your heart to leaving her behind.

DUSTY was born in beautiful Victorian Cape May. He was a happy kitten, he was loved, played, hunted like any other kitten. He played by the beach, rolled in the sand. Dusty was special, his caregiver knew he could never part with him. 15 years forward, Dusty’s caregiver passes away, leaving Dusty scared, confused and homeless. Adopt!

LAZLO is an all-around excellent cat. He is very friendly and loves getting attention. Lazlo is a senior cat with the heart of a kitten, and he will chirp at you when he wants you to pet him. Lazlo clearly had a family who cared about him at some point, but he was found outside as a stray. Can you offer this loving senior his forever home?
