Born and raised in Ottawa, Cody Ceci has accomplished what most people in Ottawa can only dream of doing- playing for his hometowns NHL team he grew up cheering for, The Ottawa Senators. This 20 year old defensemen plays an intensive, hard-on-the-puck style of hockey. At 6’2� and 207lbs, the Ottawa defenseman has an ideal hockey figure that allows him to have plenty of highend offensive ability. He is one of the faster skaters on the Ottawa Senators and has an amazing point-shot, making him a perfect asset, especially for power-plays. Drafted in the 1st round, 15th overall, Ceci has proven himself as a promising addition to the Ottawa Senators as well as the fans, as his game is only going to improve from here. He played for Binghamton Senators for 2 years prior to playing for the Senators. In early 2014, The Ottawa Senators GM Bryan Murray told Ceci he should look for an apartment in Ottawa, as he is here to stay- something that Ceci as well as many Ottawa Senators fans were hoping to hear!
CODY CECI We caught up with the Ottawa Native Cody Ceci to discuss his passion for the game, what it was like growing up in Ottawa and to discuss many of his accomplishments in the world of hockey, all before his 21st birthday.

In the 2011-2012 hockey season you had the second most points out of all defensemen in the OHL, scoring a total of 60 points. You were also invited to tryout camp for Canada’s U20 team in just your third season. How did it feel to accomplish all of this at such a young age? It’s an awesome feeling looking back. Played with a lot of talented guys and had a lot of fun in Junior hockey. You were drafted 15th overall in the 2012 draft by the Ottawa Senators and signed to a 3-year entry level contract. What did it feel like being drafted by the NHL hockey team located in the same city you grew up in? Being drafted by your home team is every kids dream growing up, and I was fortunate enough to have that happen to me. Couldn’t have been happier with the outcome that day. What was your favourite hockey team to watch when you were growing up? Growing up in Ottawa I was always a Senators fan. My bedroom at my parents place is still decorated in Sens stuff. Growing up in Ottawa, when did you first start playing hockey? When did you realize that hockey was something you wanted to do for the rest of your life? I started around 5 years old and fell in love with the game. The more I came to realize it was possible to play in the NHL and make a job out of it, the more time I dedicated.

Your first NHL game was an emergency call up (because of Jared Cowen’s suspension) against the Buffalo Sabres. What was it like walking into the dressing room with all of the other Senators for the first time? The feeling was unbelievable all the coaches, trainers, and players made me feel right at home, right away. It was cool to see my stall set up come game time with all my gear and name bar on the jersey. I went from really excited to really nervous pretty quickly. You scored your first goal on December 16th, 2013 at 3:59 minutes of overtime against the St. Louis Blues, helping your team take the 3-2 win. What emotions ran through your head when you scored the goal? How long did these emotions last for and who was the first person you talked to on the phone right after the game? That was a moment I’ll remember for a long time. It was a big game and St. Louis was hot coming in so the significance made it that much more amazing for me. My whole family was at the game, as well as some friends, so I was lucky enough to see them all in person after the game. You were advised in mid-January of 2014 by Bryan Murray that you should look at getting an apartment here in Ottawa, as management told you that you’re here with the Senators for good. How much of a relief was it to be told you’re becoming a fulltime NHLer? How long did you spend looking for a place to live? It gave me a little bit of peace of mind hearing that news. For a long time I was living in the hotel day to day. When I got the news I was

really happy but went into a bit of a panic cause I had no idea where to begin. Who is your closest friend on your hockey team? Mark Stone lived with me all summer and trained at the rink so we saw a lot of each other, grew pretty close. What kind of music do you listen to before your games? I listen to all sorts of music outside of the rink depending on the mood, but before a game I like to listen to rap or EDM. What are your hobbies throughout summer in the off-season? I got a speed bike this summer and took up cycling but other than that I do quite a bit of wake boarding and wake surfing. Where is your favourite city to travel to and play hockey in? Where is your least favourite city to travel to and play hockey in? I got to travel to a lot of cities I’ve never been to before this past year. As far as favourites go Nashville or New York City land pretty high on the list. Least favourite would have to be Toronto for obvious “rival” reasons. Who was your favourite coach growing up and how did he contribute to your success? Favourite coach would have to be my dad, although he got fairly intense at times he pushed me to become the player I am today. During the off-season, where is your favourite place to travel to? Who do you usually travel with? I spend most of the off-season up at the cottage with family and friends. I love to get away from it all and just hangout on the water, whether were boating or not theres always something to do up there. @Cecer_83

Paul Byron Calgary Flames Forward Starting off your hockey career in Junior B, did you ever think you would make it as far as the NHL? Was it always a dream of yours? No, I never thought about playing in the NHL while I was playing Jr.B. My focus at the time was just trying to make the team. They were coming off 3 championships in 4 years so they had a great team. Once I was with the team, my focus was just trying to be good enough to get some scholarship interest. The NHL was always a dream but it didn't really seem achievable at the time.
who can control where you end up and good things come to people who work for it.
Who is your biggest hockey hero, and why? Paul Kariya. He was always my favourite player growing up. He was a small player that overcame adversity to become a star, which was something I really looked up to.
Where is your favourite vacation spot? Do you travel during the summer? My favourite vacation spot is Mexico. It’s a beautiful place and it's a great getaway after a long season. Most of my summer travel is going up to my wife's parents cottage about an hour and half away from Ottawa.
Tell me about the most humbling experience you have had to date while being a hockey player. My first call up to the NHL. So many years of hard work finally paid off. It really gave me the confidence to know I could play at the highest level in the world. Another pinnacle moment in my hockey career was when I scored my first goal, two nights after my first NHL game, in my hometown. It was very humbling to have so much support here in Ottawa for something that meant so much to me. What do you do on your days off when you are not playing hockey? My days off are usually pretty occupied by my son and daughter. They both like to wake up early so I make a nice breakfast and just try to enjoy the time with them when I'm not normally at the rink or gym. How do you like fatherhood? Is it hard to balance being a professional hockey player with changing diapers? I love it. It's only hard on game days because your attention is focused on the game that night, but I'm pretty lucky because I get to spend all summer with them. When we aren't on the road during the season, I'm home in the early afternoon. Even on game days a diaper or two to change isn't that bad. Growing up in Ottawa where hockey is very concentrated, did you feel a lot of pressure growing up to make it big? I never felt any pressure to make it big. Pretty well my whole career I was told “Yeah, you can play at this level, but you'll never have success at the next level with bigger players.” From peewee on, I was never supposed to get the next level. You seemed to have faced a lot of critics growing up. What is the best piece of advice you could give a young hockey player striving to make it big? Yeah I did. Don't listen or let anyone tell you what you can be, or what you can accomplish. You’re the only person

Take me back to your first NHL goal. My first NHL goal was against the Ottawa Senators in Ottawa. I remember breaking down the far side and seeing a 2-1 happen. Tyler Ennis, who was my roommate in my first AHL season, made a perfect pass so all I did was slide it into an open net. I had a lot of friends and family at the game so it was a pretty special moment.
What is it about hockey that drives you, and has you impassioned? I think it’s just my competitiveness. I've always been super competitive no matter what it was. From video games, to board games, to anything you play against someone else. My mentality has always been to try and be the best player on the ice every single time I step onto the ice. Are you involved in any charitable organizations? Why do you think it is so important to give back? Our team does a lot of charity events during the season and any time someone asks me to be involved with an event I do my best to be there. So many people have given their time and energy to help me become the person and hockey player I am today. If I can do anything to give back my time and energy to help others than I do what I can to be there and hope it makes a difference. Do the Calgary Flames have any locker room rituals after a win? After a win, we give out a fireman's helmet to a player deemed to be the MVP of that game. The player who wins the helmet then passes it on next game to who he thinks was MVP that night. Here is my final question for you. You are tied 2-2 with your rival team, 30 seconds on the clock. If you could pick any hockey player in the world to make the winning goal- who would it be? If we’re tied 2-2 against the Oilers this year, I'm hoping to set up Brian McGrattan for the win. People don’t see how much he does for our team. He’s an awesome guy.

You were drafted in the OHL draft in 1985 by the Sault. Ste. Marie Greyhounds. You were also the first goalie taken in the draft. How did this experience feel for you and what was your first reaction when you found out you were the first goalie selected? Very proud. I was drafted right out of Gloucester Rangers Midget AAA. I knew a lot about the OHL, and the Soo’s great history. I was 16 and nervous leaving home. I also played for Canada at the Under 18 that summer. So it’s when hockey became my way of life. What was it like playing goalie in the OHL? Which was your favourite team that you played for? I loved playing in the Soo and Oshawa. Playing for Canada in the 1987 WJC was a real thrill. Still very proud of that accomplishment. The OHL is a great proving ground for young talent. Over the years, you have had many ups and downs in your personal life. How do you feel that these experiences have changed your views on life and sports? My personal journey has been tied very closely to my professional life. I’ve had so many great experiences. Plenty of failure. I’ve always followed my passion for life and work. It’s given me a unique perspective and allowed me to evolve into a very interesting person, lol. I certainly wish I could do some things differently. But I’m very comfortable in my own skin. I also feel I’ve become a real person. What was the transition like for you from playing hockey for Washington’s affiliate team to working for the Capital’s television network as a colour commentator? It was simple and seamless. I knew the NHL and Capital’s like the back of my hand. I also did pro scouting. So it was a great fit. I was and still am a proud Caps alumni. It was a blast. Everyone calls you Simmer. Is there a story to this name? Who first called you Simmer and how did it come to be? Wish I had a better story. Anyone with the last name Simpson, is usually Simmer. I’ve had it since I was 15. Over your career, you have worked for the Washington Capital’s organization as well as the Leaf’s organization. Which organization did you enjoy working for the most and why? Washington was my life from ‘86 to 2004. I learned under David Poile. Had a chance to become Asst. GM in Nashville when he left. It was a huge mistake not following him. I loved my time in DC. We had a great group. A real bond as staff and players. My Toronto days were great under John Ferguson, but it was doomed from the start. Fergie wanted to rebuild, but upper management wouldn’t allow that process. You have been working for TSN 1200 (originally known as “The Team 1200) radio station for over two years now. What has been your favourite memory since joining the radio station? Returning to Ottawa was a smart personal move. Getting on with TSN 1200 was a God send. It’s given me stability. A great work environment.

Allowed me to be myself. I love the daily routine with “The Panda” and the entire staff. It’s a very healthy work place. I’ve enjoyed every minute. It’s allowed me to do National TV work on CTV and be a regular on OTR. It fits perfect with my 20 years in NHL management. The Senators have had a lot of changes over the past 6 months. They no longer have Spezza and Hemsky and they have added Legwand and Chiasson to the team. How do you think the Senators are looking in terms of success for the upcoming season? I like the group. They should be solid. Play a harder and smarter brand of hockey. I still see a solid talent base. You can’t win with one way players. I love the young core and they have drafted very well. I’m excited for the season to start. Over the past 6 months, has there been a specific decision made by the Senators management team that you strongly agree with? Any that you strongly disagree with? I like the young core. It’s important they resign Methot and Ryan. The Bishop trade was a disaster. You can’t trade top talent into the division and get nothing in return. They have a solid management group. They just need funds from ownership to keep it moving ahead. You and Ian are a great team of co-hosts on “The Drive.” What is your funniest memory from working with Ian on the show? Do the two of you ever “butt-head’s” when it comes to different perspectives on sports debates? Who usually “win’s” the debates between the two of you? Ian is a terrific host and great man. We argue all the time. I worked in the NHL for many years. I’ve learned to argue and leave it behind. I love a great debate with a smart guy. We have plenty of laughs, and lots of debate. I love coming to work everyday. That’s what matters most. This is a great job and I am super thankful. @TSNSimmer

do you think the season is going to go for the Senators this year? The Senators are going to be a great gift for talk radio this year, because nobody knows how they’re going to finish. The expectations are very low compared to last year. Personally, I think this team can finish anywhere from 5th – 12th in the conference – which is the label you can put on about six or seven other teams in the East. This team usually does better when they are viewed as underdogs, so I think they will make the playoffs this year.
Your first media job was in 1997 when you began co-hosting sports shows on CKCU-FM on Carleton University’s campus. What was this experience like for you? What is your favourite memory from this job? This was a great experience for me, getting my first opportunity to work on the radio side of things while I was still a journalism student. The best part is that it was my first chance to get media passes for the Ottawa Lynx and Senators – so I had an opportunity to sit in the press box at sporting events for the first time. It was really an opportunity for me to rub shoulders with professional media members and it made me realize that this was definitely a career path that I wanted to pursue. What made you choose to do Journalism program at Carleton University in 1994? What did you think of the program? I grew up in Vancouver and probably knew that I wanted to be in sports media from the time I was 12 or 13 years old. That was always my goal growing up. So when I graduated from high school, there were only a few legitimate options for journalism schools at the time. Carleton had the reputation as one of the best ones, so I was thrilled to be accepted there. I ended up meeting my wife in the journalism program, so that is probably the best thing to come out of it for me. (And the program itself was a close second). How much of a relief was it for you when you were offered the job to work for TSN 1200? How much did it mean to your kids and wife that you wanted to give up your dream job at Sportsnet so that you can spend more time with your family? It was like someone tossed us a life preserver to be honest with you. I was averaging about 125-150 days a year on the road with Sportsnet. I loved the job, but the travel was killing me. I tried my best to have the travel reduced, but at the time, they weren’t open to that idea. If they would have told me, “Ian you can travel only 50-75 days a year,” I would have stayed. So when the opportunity at the radio station came around, we jumped at it. It was a way for me to stay doing what I love – while getting the chance to sleep in my own bed each night. I loved Sportsnet and my time there, but it was probably in my family’s best interest for me to move on. There has been a lot of talk about the Senators and how they will do in the 2014-2015 season, especially in regards to the loss of Spezza as well as Hemsky and the addition of Legwand and Chiasson. How

If you were the head coach of the Senators, who would you select for the captain of the team as well as the assistant captains? That’s a tough one. I’d probably go with Chris Phillips for now – but make it very clear to Erik Karlsson that he is the next captain of this team. I would give Karlsson the “A” and put the “C” on him whenever Phillips wasn’t in the lineup. I just think Phillips has done a lot for this organization and giving him the captaincy is a small way for them to say thanks. I’d also give “A”s to guys like Clarke MacArthur and Kyle Turris who have committed to be here long-term. Many Senators fans had various opinions on the whole Spezza trade. What was your take on this? If you listen to Jason, I think he knows it was best for everyone to move on. He spent 12 years in this city and it was probably a good time for a change. Good for the team to move on and good for him. I don’t think they got equal value in return for him, but that’s the nature of the beast. When you trade someone as talented and productive as Spezza, you will never get a fair return. Which forward on the Ottawa Senators do you think will finish with the most points in the upcoming hockey season? Which defensemen? I think Erik Karlsson will be this team’s leading scorer – for both forwards and defensemen. I think he’s the only guy on this team with the ability to crack 80 points. He’s dynamic and fun to watch on a nightly basis and if he’s back to 100 per cent health, I wouldn’t rule out the chance of him finishing in the top 10 in NHL scoring. As for the forwards, it seems like Kyle Turris’ game is evolving to the point where he could maybe be a 65-point centreman. Over your career with TSN 1200, you have interviewed many of the coaches and general managers of different hockey teams in the NHL. There are always great interviews and there are sometimes negative ones, as seen in many Bryan Burke interviews. Which interview was the most positive and insightful that you have had so far with any coach or general manager? Which interview was the most negative that you have had? I think my favourite interview I’ve done on the radio so far was the one I did with Jason Spezza this summer after the trade. He agreed to do a 15-minute interview with me and he was very candid about his time here. He opened up quite a bit and I thought it was a great listen for Sens fans. I also always enjoy having Eugene Melnyk on the radio. He is rarely bland and usually offers up some good soundbytes for Senators fans. He’s a polarizing figure with some of the fan base, but I really enjoy his passion as a radio guest. @ian_mendes

YEARS LATER
As the new school year starts up for kids all across the country, we couldn’t help but be reminded that this year also marks the 25th anniversary since Saved By the Bell aired its last episode. From 1989 to 1993, the teen sitcom made Saturday mornings must-watch TV. Up to that point, cartoons dominated the airwaves, which as you can imagine, didn’t sit too well with the tweens and teens wanting something a little more on their level. Originally packaged as Good Morning, Miss Bliss, Saved by the Bell opened up the avenue for shows like The O.C., Beverly Hills, 90210, and Dawson’s Creek by exploring mature themes that young people are usually confronted with. Of course, as its cheery theme song suggests, the show was principally about the enjoyable exploits of a ragtag group of friends—Zack, Kelly, Lisa, Screech, Slater, and Jessie. One could say they were even the precursor for the cast lineup from Friends. Overseen by principal Mr. Belding, Zack and Co. got into plenty of adventures along the way. Saved by the Bell’s resident fashionista brought all of the Screeches to the yard. And it’s easy to see why as Lark Voorhies’ photogenic looks landed her acting work since the age of two. After her time as Lisa Turtle, Voorhies went on to play various roles in much of 90’s television most-loved shows. She had recurring roles in Days of our Lives and The Bold and the Beautiful, starred in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, showed up in Family Matters, and played love interests in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and In the House.
The All-American Girl and Zack Morris’ Kryptonite. Tiffani Thiessen had a way of making hordes of boys swoon as reputable cheerleader Kelly Kapowski. That was never more evident than when Zach and Slater went head-to-mullet vying for her love.
Although recently she’s come under fire for exhibiting some odd behavior in TV interviews (rumors flew that she was bipolar and/ or on drugs), Voorhies has denied the accusations and has continued to focus on her career by starting her own production company, You Soy Productions.
Thiessen’s charms first gained notice when she was crowned 1987’s Miss Junior America. As recognizable as she is on Saved by the Bell, she is also widely known for playing Valerie Malone on the sultry Beverly Hills, 90210. Not content with letting two mega-roles define her, she segued quickly into an array of TV-film roles and pursued an acting career in film, which eventually got her a part in Woody Allen’s Hollywood Ending in 2002. Despite her bigscreen endeavors, working in television has come easier for Thiessen, as evidenced by her new gig: Currently, she stars in the cable TV show White Collar.

In Saved by the Bell’s beta incarnation, Dennis Haskins also played the role of principal Mr. Belding. Then he went on to join the spinoff Saved by the Bell: The New Class and has poked fun at his turn as Belding by partaking in such projects as the karaoke-themed album Karaoke With Your Favourite Principal Dennis. Haskins still pursues acting, starring in bit roles on Mad Men and How I Met Your Mother, but it’s hard not to associate him with the timely catchphrase “Hey, hey, hey—what is going on here?”

Screech! Every group of friends needs the token nerd, and Dustin Diamond played one of TV’s most iconic. When not expressing his unrequited love for Lisa Turtle, Diamond has had a knack for sticking his neck into precarious situations, much like his onscreen counterpart. In 2006, he came back into the media’s lens after releasing a foul-named sex tape. Though it didn’t jumpstart his career much like it did for Paris Hilton or Kim Kardashian, he was able to land some appearances on reality and game shows like Celebrity Boxing 2 and The Weakest Link as a result. His most memorable take on those might have been his all-cast confrontation on Celebrity Fit Club. He also received plenty of flak from his fellow Saved by the Bell colleagues after airing their dirty laundry in a tellall titled Behind the Bell. Diamond is apparently a lot less lovable post SBTB—so much so, he just got kicked off the U.K.’s Celebrity Big Brother...but we wonder if anyone even knew he was on it in the first place?

As the breaker of monotony and fourth walls, Mark-Paul Gosselaar served as the perfect Zack Morris considering he would become a fairly prolific film and TV actor. After reprising his role in a long line of Saved by the Bell spinoffs, he was able to depart from the Morris persona by starring in 1996’s TV-film She Cried No. Suffice it to say that he was no gentleman in that role. From there, he would use the keen smarts and business savvy he tailored as Morris to star in sequential roles as a detective in NYPD Blue, a campaign advisor in Commander in Chief, and a defense attorney in Raising the Bar. He continues that trend by starring as Peter Bash in the legal procedural dramedy Franklin & Bash. Outside of the Hollywood limelight, Gosselaar sports a wild side as he’s competed in and won major track cycling competitions around the world. He has two young kids from a previous marriage but has remarried in the past year with a new baby due later this month.
Fruit flies tend to feed on decaying vegetables and fruits, which is where they get their name from. They can also be found in very unsanitary conditions, such as garbage dumps and trash cans because they typically consume bacteria and sugar from decaying food.
3 Fruit flies have a very interesting body. They have red eyes with a beige body, along with transversal bands on their abdomen. Their bodies are hairy with sticky feet, which is what carries bacteria that is sometimes harmful for human health.
4 Male fruit flies are quite the charmers. During courtship, they vibrate their wings to produce songs, they change their body posture and they lick the female`s body to try and convince her to mate. Safe to say they are quite a romantic!
5 There`s a reason why we see so many fruit flies around rotting fruits and vegetables. It`s not because they all fly to them- it`s because the female fruit flies usually lay their eggs in the rotting fruit and vegetables and they tend to hatch after just a few days.
Thanksgiving IN THE CAPITAL Thanksgiving in Ottawa this year falls on Monday, October 13th. Thanksgiving is a time for us to give thanks for what we have and to spend time with our family and loved ones. Each Thanksgiving, it is tradition for millions of Canadians to gobble down turkeys as part of a bountiful, hearty holiday feast. However, how did it come to be that we eat turkey on Thanksgiving? Why turkey and not salmon – why do we not sit down for some Thanksgiving tuna? Well, it appears that the story is a little foggy, but it seems to date back to the 16th Century. Popular theory is that during the 16th Century, a fleet of Spanish ships sunk on their way to attack England. Queen Elizabeth was told this news while she was enjoying a delectable dinner. It is alleged that she was so happy with this news, she ordered that another goose be served. The Queen was so happy she was clearly going to stuff her face with glee that cold 16th Century night. It is written that early settlers were so inspired by the Queen’s actions, that they decided to roast a turkey instead of a goose. As you can see, that story does not make a lot of sense. While we are unable to prove why people eat turkeys on Thanksgiving, we can take a few moments to appreciate a few interesting facts about the turkey.

Turkeys can have heart attacks. It is said that entire fields of turkeys were known to drop dead from the loud noise of Air Force jets breaking the sound barrier while on test flights.
Wild turkeys can fly, domestic turkeys cannot.

4 5 Female turkeys don’t gobble. Male turkeys can – and there are different types of gobbles used, as mating techniques.
6 Turkeys have eyes on the sides of their heads – which allows, with slight turns of the head, the turkey to have 360 degree vision.

So You Want to Open a Franchise By: Lacey Miller
Franchises are one of the fastest growing business models in Canada, and with good reason: you can start your own business with the added comfort of working within a proven operating system and utilizing the goodwill of an existing recognized brand. Franchisors are required, by law, to provide you with a comprehensive package of disclosure documents prior to entering into the franchise agreement. So before you sign on the dotted line, take a longer look at these documents not only to familiarize yourself with your ongoing rights and obligations as a franchisee, but also because there are a number of business issues unique to franchises that require some attention. Below we have set out some of those important issues. 1) Training Likely, one of the reasons you have chosen to become a franchisee is that you are looking for a business with a proven track record. One way to help develop the skills and know-how required to operate comes from the hands-on experience provided by training from the franchisor. It is important to review your agreement for any initial or ongoing training provided for franchisees. If the agreement doesn’t contain much detail, ask for it, along with the anticipated costs or travel expenses. Often the agreement requires that you not only attend training, but that you bring certain key employees along as well. Generally franchisors provide initial training, but if it is important to you that there are programs available for upgrading your management and operational skills, make sure those rights are set out in your agreement.

It is also important to be aware of any rights that the franchisor maintains with respect to internet sales completed directly through their website. These are just a few of the important issues involved in franchising a business and key items to review in your franchise agreement. There are many more, which is why it is important to surround yourself with trusted advisors to assist you in making this decision the right one for you. No matter what business you are looking to open, visit some locations already in operation and speak with current franchisees about their experiences.
2) Time Requirements If you plan on maintaining another job while operating your franchise you will need to ensure your agreement does not provide otherwise. Often franchise agreements will include provisions whereby you are required to devote your full time and attention to the operation of the franchise.

DISICK Scott Disick is handsome, wealthy and charming. He owns more luxurious cars and gadgets than Batman – and just happens to be dating Kourtney Kardashian, one of the most beautiful women on the planet. On its face, it definitely seems that Disick is living quite the life – a life that is played out each week in front of millions of viewers on the E! Channel hit series, “Keeping Up with the Kardashians”. However, underneath all the glitz, glamour and fame – there is a man who has overcome great adversity to defy the odds and become a highly successful entrepreneur on his own. In addition, he is a proud and loving father, fiercely protective of his children. To me, this tells me all you really need to know about the real Scott Disick – and why millions of people around the world love him and follow his every move. We caught up with Disick as he prepares to come to Ottawa to host the Haunted Carnival event on October 31st:

“I really can’t give away any of my secrets of becoming a lord. Its a tough job, but somebody has to do it.” You were born in New York. What was life like growing up for you in New York City and Long Island? I was born in New York City at New York University, for some reason a lot of people think I grew up in Long Island but I did not. I grew up in New York City and lived on Long Island for a few years when I was a teenager, but I realized I liked New York City better and moved back.
When did you decide to become Lord Disick? Was it a difficult process to become a Lord? Could any commoner off the street become one – or do you need to be from a certain pedigree like you to even be considered? I really can’t give away any of my secrets to becoming a lord. It’s a hard job, but somebody has to do it.
Were you a sports fan growing up? Did you play any sports at all? I enjoyed playing hockey and watching hockey when I was growing up. From age 12 to age 16 I was really into snowboarding.
In an interview, you stated that you and Kourtney were together well before “Keeping Up with the Kardashians”. Looking back, how different is life now versus life before the show? Before the show, nobody followed us around that we didn’t know, now – from time to time – people follow us that we don’t know, that always throws me off and can be uncomfortable.
When you were growing up, did you have a particular career that you wanted to pursue? My only interest was to be a businessman, that’s all I wanted to be growing up. You are known for your fashion sense – were you always interested in fashion? Who are some of your favourite designers? I have always been interested in clothing. My favourite designer and businessman in the fashion world is Ralph Lauren. What are some of the biggest fashion mistakes that you see men make today? What fashion advice do you have for men reading this? These days, I see people wearing suits too tight. Suits should be well fitted, but by no means should they be tight. Worry about who tailors your suits more than where you buy your suits. Make sure that your button holes on your suits are functional. Have you ever considered starting your own clothing line? If so, what would your signature pieces be? Yes I do, from time to time. I think of making my own line of suits and sports wear.
On its face, being a celebrity sounds glamorous – you have money, people know who you are and people care what you do and what you say. Is being a celebrity everything it appears to be, or are there things that you really don’t like about it? If you sign up with this gig, some bad and some good comes from it. I don’t want to complain about people knowing who I am, I would just say it can be difficult to trust people – maybe more so now, because you never really know what their motives are. How would you describe your relationship with the media/paparazzi? Is it a positive or a negative one? I have no relationship with any media outlets or paparazzi. They do their job and I do mine. You have two children – and it was recently announced that you and Kourtney are expecting a third child. You grew up an only child. How would you describe your experience being an only child? I loved being an only child.

What is the best thing about being a dad? Every day there is something new. You’ve owned restaurants and are a successful entrepreneur. What advice would you have for anyone reading this considering getting into the business world? Just to know your battles, know what you’re good at and stick to it. Don’t get distracted by things that are not right for you. When the cameras are off and there is no paparazzi – what are some of your favourite hobbies and pass times? Nothing really changes for me if the cameras are on or off, my biggest hobby has always been cars. From your Lamborghini Murcielaogo, your chrome Audi R8, Rolls Royce Phantom and more – you have a very impressive car collection. What is your favourite car to drive and why? I love them all, everything drives so differently so its hard for me to just name one. Ferrari’s always drive the best and Lamborghini’s always look the best. What is one thing that people would be very surprised to learn about you? That I have insecurities just like everyone else in the world. Looking back on your life to date – what accomplishment are you most proud of? My kids. You are coming up to Ottawa on Friday, October 31st for the Haunted Carnival event in support of the Ottawa Senators Foundation. Have you ever been to Canada? Yes, I’ve been to Canada a handful of times, I’ve always enjoyed it and appreciated my time there. I’m excited to come back to Canada and see Ottawa, as this will be my first time there. Have you given any thought to what kind of costume you’ll be wearing at the event? I haven’t really thought of anything good yet, I wasn’t planning on wearing a costume until this question – maybe I’ll wear something Royal! @ScottDisick

Audrina Patridge became a household name in 2006 once she was cast on the hit reality series “The Hills”, which chronicled the personal and professional lives of Patridge and friends Lauren Conrad, Whitney Port and Heidi Montag. Since that series ended, Patridge has gotten into acting, modeling and now is the host of the NBC travel series “1st Look”. We talked to Patridge about her life, career and what’s next for the 29 year old as she prepares to come to Ottawa for the Haunted Carnival event on October 31st:

You were born in Los Angeles, California - as a child growing up in LA, did you have aspirations of becoming an actress/model or did you always want to do something else? I did! I actually moved to LA to act, but the first month I was here, I was cast on “The Hills!” I had no idea at the time how lucky I was.
You have starred in a few films in recent years, how have you enjoyed acting and are there any new projects for you in the works? I have had the opportunity to act in a few films and it’s always a great time. It’s not something that I am currently pursuing as I really love being a host. But, never say never!
You gained international recognition from your role on the reality series “The Hills” - tell us a little about what life was like for you before the Hills. What did you do for work? I was working as a receptionist at Quixote studios in Hollywood , I answered phones, checked people in for photo shoots along with going on auditions and castings. My life was very normal before “The Hills.”
You are currently the host of NBC’s late night travel series “1st Look”.How have you enjoyed this experience so far? It is a dream job. I get to travel all over the country eating some of the best food, meeting some of the best chefs and literally get to make a living having fun.
How did your role on “The Hills” come about? When you were approached about joining the cast, did you have any reservations about being on a reality series? If so, what were they and why did you feel that way? Well, I was soooo lucky and the story sounds kind of a like an urban legend, but I was discovered by my pool the first month I was living there, I was laying out by the pool and the producer was scouting apartment complexes for Lauren and Heidi. He approached me, liked my story, and what I did. Within 3 weeks I was filming. Do you still keep in contact with any of the other cast members? I try, but it’s so hard since we’ve all gone our separate ways…I actually just saw Brody Jenner last week for his Podcast, which was a lot of fun. I see Stephanie from time to time. I don’t really see a lot of anyone these days since I’m traveling so much for my show 1st Look. How long did it take for you to become comfortable with all the cameras around during the filming of “The Hills”? I don’t know if you ever get fully comfortable, but after the first season, I started to get used to them always being there. You’ve mentioned before that there is a fine line between real life and scripted on reality shows like “The Hills”. Looking back, would you say the way you were portrayed on the show is an accurate description of you - or do you feel there were times were the producers asked you to do things for the sake of drama - that weren’t really things you would do in certain situations? Oh they absolutely did things for the sake of drama. Brody and I were just talking about that last week on his show…how everyone made it look like we “hooked up” in Hawaii, but we were really just good friends. You recently were a contestant on “Dancing with the Stars” - how was that experience for you? It was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. I loved learning how to dance and everyone on that show is so nice. It was like a big family. And having a great partner helped. Tony was the best. You have spoken out about how people should choose adoption over purchasing pets. Why do you feel this way and why is this such an important cause to you personally? I am an animal lover and getting involved with different organizations you realize how many animals in the pounds are killed every week, people should definitely adopt. I did not adopt my dog, I was unaware of everything I now know. If I ever get another animal I’ll definitely adopt.

What sort of music do you listen to - do you have a favourite artist or artists, what was the best concert you’ve ever seen live? I love all kinds of music! I love going to festivals, you can see a ton of your favourite bands one day in one place! The most recent concert I’ve attended was Phantogram, which was amazing. Sarah is such a great performer and so fun to watch/dance to. What is your favourite place in the world to travel and why? Hands down Bora Bora. It’s heaven on earth. How big a role has your family played in your success to date? Do you keep in touch with them a lot? My family is my safe place. I am so close with all of them. When I’m not working, I am constantly at their house and they really keep me grounded. You are well known for your fashion sense - who are some of your favourite designers and have you ever considered starting your own fashion line? I love Jay Godfrey, Novella Royale, For Love and Lemons. I would love to do something in the fashion world, a swim line would be a dream come true! Right now, my job is taking up so much of my time, but I constantly have ideas. It’s just a matter of finding time to work on them. What is one thing that people - your fans - would be very surprised to learn about you? Hmmm.... I am a music lover used to work at two different recording studios, umm I used to have my nose pierced with blonde and purple hair haha. No one will ever see that photo it’s locked away!! Do you enjoy cooking? If so, what would you say is Audrina Patridge’s signature dish? I enjoy cooking with my family. I was recently on The Talk making my Grandma Betty’s Chicken Pot Pie! It’s definitely a favourite of mine. What advice would you give to a young woman breaking into the modelling/acting business that you wish you were told when you started? Trust your gut. Along the way, you will meet people who may not have your best interest in mind. Figure out who does, hold those people close and stay true to yourself. You are coming to Ottawa for the Haunted Carnival event on Halloween night to support the Ottawa Senators Foundation. Have you ever been to Canada? What was it like growing up in LA? Did you spend a lot of time on the beach and water? Growing up in Malibu was awesome because it was completely separated from everything going on in Hollywood. When I was younger I loved to surf, fish, and snowboard. Your dad, Olympic champion Bruce Jenner, is known for having won Decathlon gold in Montreal in the 1976 Olympics. What sports are you most interested in playing and watching? I enjoy surfing and golf. But I really enjoy watching football since I joined a Fantasy League this year. Your name is Sam Brody Jenner, but you go by Brody. Is there a story behind that? Not really. My Uncle’s name was Sam but I was always called by my middle name Brody my entire life. How did The Princes of Malibu go from idea to reality? Lots of hard work from Spencer and myself. We did everything from creative, filming, editing, and pitching. You have starred in many reality shows. From The Princes of Malibu, The Hills, Keeping Up with the Kardashians and more. Have you always been so comfortable in front of a camera? THE OTTAWA JAIL HOSTEL Many a prisoner faced death while in this jail. Prisoners who lost their lives in this jail were often burned and buried in a cemetery located behind the prison. It is believed by many that the “Death Row” is haunted by several ghosts. The most famous of the ghosts is said to be a man named Patrick James Whelan. People have said they’ve seen his spirit walking around in the area, heading towards the gallows.

THE BYTOWN MUSEUM This museum is said to be haunted by the ghost of Colonel By, the builder of the canal, and that of his assistant General Duncan McNab. However, the creepy male voice yelling “Get Out” seems to top the list of things you do not want to hear when you are visiting this museum. In addition, its been said that anonymous female visitors have been pushed in empty rooms, childrens voices are heard crying in the doll exhibit – some even say that the dolls move and wink. CHATEAU LAURIER Ottawa’s most famous hotel is said to be haunted by one of the victims of the Titanic. Charles Melville Hays, one of Canada’s great railway pioneers – who never got to see the completion of his dream, the Grant Trunk Pacific Railway. His spirit has allegedly been seen by guests and staff members – several incidents of walls rattling and objects moving have been credited to him.

WATSONS MILL, MANOTICK On Monday, March 11, 1861, Ann Currier held a small party to celebrate their first successful year of operation of the Mill. While making their way through the congestion of moving equipment and machinery, tragedy struck. Ann’s crinoline and dress became caught in one of the turbine shafts on the second floor of the Mill and she was flung against a pillar and killed instantly. Since that time, there have been numerous unconfirmed sightings of Ann’s ghost in Watson’s Mill, causing the site to be often considered among Ottawa’s haunted buildings. Watson’s Mill currently runs a number of events promoting the haunted nature of the building including the Terrifying Tales at Twilight and visits by the Haunted Ottawa and Paranormal Society.

According to Google’s list of trending Halloween searches, there will be a lot of people dressed as Minions from the film Despicable Me. Also popular, apparently, is a fox, in homage to Ylvis’ viral video “The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?).” Halloween Express is also reporting a spike in Beetlejuice costumes—not because the character is surging in popularity, but because the striped suit is being used to dress as Robin Thicke from the VMAs. Bane, the Gotham-terrorizing bad guy from the final installment of The Dark Knight trilogy was among the most popular male costumes, while women were busy braiding their hair for their Katniss Everdeen costumes, pegged to The Hunger Games. WHY In honour of Halloween, here are 5 things you might not know about Halloween and its traditions.
JACK-O’-LANTERN Celtic folklore suggests a story about a man called Jack who tricks Satan to never take his soul. When Jack dies, having been too sinful, he is refused entry to heaven and is barred from hell. Satan gave jack a flame that would never burn out, which he placed inside a turnip and wandered the Earth searching for a resting place. To ward spirits, Celts used carved turnips to ward off evil spirits. When descendants immigrated to the US, a lack of available turnips led to pumpkin carving.
ORANGE AND BLACK Orange and black are the two colours traditionally associated with Halloween because of pagan traditions. The tradition celebrated the autumn harvest with orange symbolizing the colours of crops and turning leaves. In contract, black marked the death or end of the summer season.
COSTUMES AND TRICK-OR-TREATING Celtic tradition included a festival marking the end of summer called Samhain. During that time of year (October 31st to November 1st) the veil between our world and the spirit world was at its thinnest. The superstition was that ghosts would visit homes disguised as humans begging for food or money. If they were turned away then they would haunt or curse the home.

PUMPKIN Pumpkin, part of the winter squash family, offers a vast array of nutrients in both its flesh as well as in its seeds. The flesh is an excellent source of fibre, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, folate, potassium, phosphorus, and beta-carotene. Vitamin A, in particular, is important for healthy vision as well as healthy skin, teeth, and skeletal tissue. In fact, a ½ cup serving of pumpkin puree is equivalent to ¼ of your daily Vitamin A requirements. The seeds, or pepitas, are a good source of protein, iron, copper, magnesium and zinc. Pumpkin seeds are composed of heart-healthy unsaturated fatty acids, which have been shown to help regulate blood cholesterol levels.

6 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided 1 medium onion, chopped 1/2 cup finely chopped red or green bell pepper 1/2 cup fresh or frozen corn 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 teaspoons chili powder 1 teaspoon ground cumin Tomato Salsa, optional (recipe follows) 1/2 cup canned unseasoned pumpkin puree 1/2 cup shredded Monterey Jack, or Cheddar cheese 1/2 cup toasted wheat germ 1/2 cup fine dry breadcrumbs 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley 1/2 teaspoon salt Freshly ground pepper, to taste 6 8-inch flour tortillas, (soft-taco size) 2 cups shredded lettuce

In a skillet over medium heat, cook onion in 2 tsp oil until softened. Add bell pepper, corn, garlic, chili powder, and cumin. Stir and cook for 2 minutes. One of the most common things that takes place at thanksgiving dinner is over indulgence. While it is perfectly ok to enjoy and indulge in this annual decadent meal, being prudent about portion sizes can dramatically affect the amount of calories and fat involved. Moderation, as always, is key – and it also will help you from feeling uncomfortably full later on. You can say goodbye to your elastic waistband spandex pants!
3 SLOW DOWN ON SUGAR
A common misconception about holiday meals is that you should avoid eating all day in preparation for the large volume of food at dinner. However, by allowing yourself small meals and snacks throughout the day, you are more likely to stay in control and are much less likely to binge. In fact, you will also eat much slower, allowing yourself to enjoy each bite and stop eating when you are satiated.
4 PASS THE GRAVY
With thanksgiving dinner also come lots of desserts – meaning lots of processed sugar. A hidden culprit of added sugar is cranberry sauce. Although traditionally enjoyed as an accompaniment to savory dishes is can contain nearly as much sugar per serving as a slice of pumpkin pie.
5 GO EASY ON ALCOHOL
While gravy is delicious is it often little more than grease and fat. A great tip to cut calories is to skim the fat from your pan juices before making the gravy. The can reduce the calories and fat by 75% per serving.
6 SKIM ON SKIN
Don’t forget that the calories in alcohol are empty – meaning they do not offer any nutritional benefits – and they add up very quickly. Have a glass of wine as a spritzer, and enjoy sparkling water in between alcoholic beverages.
7 PACE YOURSELF
Turkey (both brown and white) is by nature a lean meat – moderate in calories and low in fat. If you remove the skin before serving you can save yourself 15-20 calories and 2-3 g of fat per 3-oz serving.
8 GET ACTIVE
Be conscious of eating more slowly. It can help you to better recognize when you are full – or satiated. It is also a great way to savor and better enjoy each bite of food. After all, you spent all day cooking it, so why not enjoy it to!
9 EASY ON THE STUFFING
Exercising more during the holidays can help you to avoid weight gain. Try taking a light walk in between dinner and dessert. It will not only promote digestion but will also give you and your family a great activity to do together.
10 DON’T OVER THINK IT
I will admit, stuffing has always been one of my favourite parts of thanksgiving dinner but it is often one of the heaviest sources of calories. To reduce fat and calories try using low-sodium chicken broth in place of melted butter, use whole grain bread, or add more vegetables. Another great trick is baking the stuffing in muffin tins to help with portion control.
While it’s important to be conscious of what we consume, it is also important to enjoy what we are eating and the experiences we have while eating. Moderation is key to healthy eating, and that includes a little indulgence every once and a while.

FOLK FESTIVAL
The 2014 Ottawa Folk Festival was billed as “The Great Escape”, and for many, the event provided a welcome diversion from the hustle and bustle of autumn. Thousands of people gathered at Hog’s Back Park during the five-day festival and were treated to a fantastic variety of acts on a total of eight different stages. From folk music to hip-hop, and virtually every genre in between, music enthusiasts had plenty of options to choose from. Headline acts such as Foster The People, Lorde, The National, Blue Rodeo, and Serena Ryder each drew huge crowds and earned rave reviews. Meanwhile, indie artists such as Wake Owl, Sun Kil Moon, Adam Cohen, and Ed Kowalczyk gave equally compelling performances, albeit in slightly more intimate surroundings. Children’s entertainer Fred Penner, performing in a beer tent no less, proved to be especially popular among a large contingent of 20- and 30-somethings who grew-up watching the singer perform on TV. It should be noted that, following his sing-along, the line-up of fans eager to meet Mr. Penner was considerably longer than the one for beer. The Ottawa area was also very well represented on stage, with The Strain, Craig Cardiff, Jill Zmud, Pony Girl, The Cardboard Crowns, and Lucky Ron among the local acts that each showcased their talents during FolkFest. In addition to the music, this year’s event also featured a craft beer house, a food truck rally, and an artisan village. Together, each of these elements helped create a unique vibe that people clearly enjoy and appreciate. The organizers of the Ottawa Folk Festival, as well as everyone who volunteered their time to make this year’s event such a resounding success, should be applauded for their efforts. We’re already looking forward to finding out what’s in store for next year!
