ZIBANEJAD
COVER STORY
OTTAWA SENATORS CENTRE, 93 He has one of the most accurate and hardest slapshots on the Ottawa Senators, and possibly the entire NHL. As a 21 year-old 6’2”, 211lbs centreman, Mika Zibanejad continues to keep Ottawa Senators fans happy. The Ottawa Senators drafted Mika Zibanejad in the first round, 6th overall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Since then, he has become an extremely talented player who dominates as a second-line centre. Mika has an incredible shot, especially his one-timers, along with his size and speed, which allows him to explode when he steps onto the ice. He is an amazing two-way player that is capable of playing any forward position. Between his incredible speed, shooting, versatility, positive attitude and his overall talent, Mika Zibanejad has been one of the most impressive players for the Ottawa Senators. FACES had a chance to speak with Mika about his life, his passion for hockey, obstacles he’s overcome and what life is like for this talented 21 year-old NHL player.

Growing up, was hockey always your favourite sport? Do you remember the time when you finally decided you wanted to make a career out of hockey? What was this decision like for you? Was your family supportive right from the start? My family, and especially my brother, have supported everything that I want to do in life. When I was 14 or 15 years-old, I had to choose which sport I was going to focus on - soccer or hockey. I was leaning towards soccer but got back into playing hockey. Eventually, I played hockey for Djurgarden High School. Ever since I was 16, I decided to let go of everything else and focus only on hockey. What was your favourite hobby as a kid? Nowadays, what do you do to keep busy in your free time? As a kid, I couldn’t sit still. I either wanted to play video games or go outside and play street hockey. I was so into hockey that my brother made a hockey net at school and brought it home for me. In 2008, you played in the U-18 tournament for Sweden. Tell us a little bit about your experience in that tournament? It was good. We had a fun group that took us to the finals. We were up 3-1 against the United States, but eventually lost 4-3 in overtime. It was kind of heartbreaking getting so far and coming so close. Although it was tough, it was a fun tournament and a fun group to be around.
“MY FAMILY, AND ESPECIALLY MY BROTHER, HAVE SUPPORTED EVERYTHING THAT I WANT TO DO IN LIFE.”
You were born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1993. Tell us a little bit about what life was like growing up there? It was good. My family lived just outside of Stockholm. I went to a Christian school and had a lot of friends there. I didn’t start with hockey, I played soccer and tennis first. My brother was into hockey, but my dad didn’t really want me to get involved because of the time and money commitment. He eventually came around after watching my first time on ice.

Besides playing for the Ottawa Senators, you have played hockey in the Swedish Junior League, the Swedish Hockey League, the World Junior Championship and the AHL. Out of all of these, which would you say was your favourite to play in and why? It’s hard to say. Every team and every situation has been different for me. Obviously World Juniors comes to mind, especially winning that gold. The way we made history having not won for so many years, being able to take the next step and get gold was special. It’s a lot of milestones, but I have to rank the World Junior Championship the highest. What is your favourite memory from growing up in Stockholm? When I got older, we moved closer to downtown. Every summer we used to walk by the water downtown at lunch, hang out and enjoy the weather. That’s the best of Stockholm - the summers are amazing. You were drafted in the 1st round, 6th overall by the Ottawa Senators in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Tell us a little bit about what this experience was like for you? It was obviously a lot of fun but a lot of nerves were involved, especially coming into it. I had a lot of meetings at the combine, a couple extra meetings after combine and more before the draft. The draft was nerve-wracking because you kind of wait around. I didn’t expect to go that high but when you hear your name called it’s a big relief. You just try not to trip on the stairs, and focus on putting on your jersey. It was a
lot of fun; an experience I’ll always take with me. Aside from hockey you enjoy being a DJ. When did you first realize you had a passion for being a DJ? Who is your favourite DJ and how have they inspired you? Well, my brother was a DJ. He used to do weddings, graduations, and stuff like that, which I thought was fun. I got to go see live DJ festivals back home in Sweden. I just listen to the music so much, and I kind of got inspired just by that. Favourite DJ? Hmm... there’s so many of them. Rehab is one of them, Dimitri Angela is another one I really like. DJing is fun, in a way, because it’s so different from what I do every day. Obviously I don’t DJ as much anymore, but coming home and just producing, sitting in front of the computer and coming up with ideas is fun. Like I said, it’s something different that gets your mind off of things. You are now playing in your 4th year for the Ottawa Senators hockey team. Over the years, which player have you become closest friends with? Well, he’s sticking around right here (Patrick Wiercoch stands over top of him), so I guess him (laughs). But there’s a lot of them. In the beginning Runblad was one of them because I roomed with him. Obviously Patty (Weircoch) has become one of them in later days. There’s a bunch of great guys. It obviously helps out having the Swedes because they know the style here in North America and have really helped me out. When Conacher was here, he was a really good friend of mine, and he still is. There’s a few of them!

“AFTER ALL THE MEETINGS, COMING HERE TO VISIT, AND GETTING TO PLAY SOMEWHERE YOU ACTUALLY WANTED - THAT WOULD HAVE TO BE MY FAVOURITE PART.” 10 | February 2015
Which NHL player is your favourite? What is it about them that you enjoy so much? Growing up, it was Crosby. When I was a kid, it was Mario Lemieux, he really inspired me. Mats Sundin too. They were two big centremen, right-handed with great skill and great work ethics. Growing up, my brother was a big inspiration for me as well. Just being around him and seeing the success he had, until he got injured. But he was still definitely an inspiration. To date, what would you say is your proudest accomplishment? Why? It’s got to be the World Junior Championship. Being in a game like that with no goals, going to overtime where one shot can make such a difference and actually getting that goal. I don’t think anyone could have written it better in terms of that situation. All the Canadians were on our side against Russia. It was like playing at home and getting that support from 18,000 people in Calgary, which was pretty unreal. Coming back to Stockholm with 10,000 people waiting for you and getting that welcome home and the congratulations was pretty unbelievable. You have played on many different lines with many different players on the Ottawa Senators. Out of all of the players, which player have you enjoyed playing hockey with the most so far and why? I would say Conacher. We found each other pretty well out there. It was fun playing with him. Like I said, we were good buddies outside of the rink. On the ice, we were looking for each other and we had a lot of fun. What is your favourite part about playing for the Ottawa Senators? Oh there’s so many, I can’t pick just one. If I have to choose a favourite part it would be getting drafted by a team I wanted to play for. After all the meetings, coming here to visit, and getting to play somewhere you actually wanted - that would have to be my favourite part. What team is your least favourite to play against and why? What team is your favourite to play against? I like to play against the New York Rangers. I’ve been having some success playing against them. They’re a fun team to play against, especially with Lundqvist in net. He’s always a special goalie to score on. The SensRangers games are very fun and intense. The least favourite? Hmm... I don’t know. Every team is different. Growing up as an NHL fan, it’s fun to play against each NHL team. What is one thing that most people don’t know about you? Well, I posted a picture on Instagram a few weeks ago. I actually used to be a model for a wedding magazine when I was 5 or 6 years-old. I don’t think a lot of people know that (laughs). @MikaZibanejad

“It’s kind of hard to turn down the opportunity to become a movie star. It’s like turning down a perfect meal, a nice bottle of wine and watching the sunset on a beach next to a beautiful woman – very few people would turn that down.” A stand-up comedian, actor, SNL alumni, director and producer – Rob Schneider has done and continues to do so much in the entertainment industry. The San Francisco-native has starred in the Deuce Bigalow series and partnered with fellow SNL alumni Adam Sandler in hit films like Waterboy and Big Daddy. Rob Schneider continues to redefine himself in the entertainment industry. His new series called “Real Rob” is an honest portrayal of an exaggerated version of his real life, and will be written with and co-star is wife. In addition, Rob has reignited his passion for stand-up comedy performances, which combines a health does of selfdeprecation mixed with several goofball antics. FACES Magazine had the opportunity to speak with Rob about his life, experiences and challenges he’s faced throughout his career. You were born in San Francisco, California in 1963. What high school did you attend? Were you part of any sort of team/ club during high school? I went to Terra Nova High School. I wasn’t on many teams, but I was voted funniest person. I played chess and was in a band – I was basically a nerd. In my senior year I did a stand-up performance for the freshman class, which kind of led to everything else. You grew up with 4 older siblings. What was that like for you? My mother warned them, “If you touch a hair on Robby’s head I will murder you”. They hated me. In 1988, Lorne Michaels of Saturday Night Live hired you as a writer and featured player for the show. How did you make your way there to that position? Just by being funny. I kind of realized that if you’re funny, eventually people will find

out about you. That’s what helped lead to my role as a full cast member. After becoming a full cast member you left SNL in 1994 to pursue a career in film. What caused you to decide to switch industries? Was becoming an actor always a dream job for you? It’s kind of hard to turn down the opportunity to become a movie star. It’s like turning down a perfect meal, a nice bottle of wine and watching the sunset on a beach next to a beautiful woman – very few people would turn that down. It doesn’t hurt that after the meal they give you a pile of money. Being a movie star usually includes all of those things so it’s pretty tough to say no. It’s hard to turn down, especially since I was working at crappy clubs for 6 years before that. Throughout your acting career you’ve worked a lot with Adam Sandler. Looking at your experiences with “The Waterboy” in 1998 and “Big Daddy” in 1999, which one did you enjoy most and why? Well, “Big Daddy” was more fun because I was there longer. I only did about 3 days on “The Waterboy”. “Big Daddy” was funnier every day because there was nothing in the script, so often times Adam or I would have to come up with something. We’d call each other the night before or we’d hang out in the steam room and talk about doing different stuff in the movie. It was also fun because while filming that movie “The Waterboy” opened at $39,000,000.00in October; nobody had ever opened at $39,000,000.00 in October, which helped make Adam a huge star. It was nice to be there and share that with him, and it was nice for him to share that with us. You’re well known for the Deuce Bigalow series. Of the two, which of these movies would you say was the most rewarding for you and why? Probably the first one, “Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo”. The second one didn’t do as well. The first one was very fun because it was the first time I was the lead in a movie.
It was exciting to carry a movie that was popular all over the world. I’d never had a movie I starred in that was popular all over the world. I flew all over the world promoting it –Brazil, Singapore, Australia, Spain and Germany. It changed my life. I still get recognized from that movie in China, it’s crazy! When you aren’t working, what hobbies do you like to do in your spare time? I still do stand-up, I started doing it about 5 years ago. I love my family and love spending time with them. I like writing, and I’m going to get back into doing some movies, definitely get back into doing a couple of movies this year. I like work; you have to submerge yourself into it in order to become successful at it. It’s not like you can be a screenwriter, a comedian, an actor and a director and have hobbies. When you’re not working on things, you’re passing out. As a child, who was your favourite actor? What about nowadays? Peter Sellers was my favourite. Now, it would be Anthony Hopkins. I would pay money to see Anthony Hopkins eat a sandwich. He’s definitely my favourite. How do you find your stand-up comedian career compares to your acting career? Which are you more comfortable doing? I’d say both, when they’re going good! Who is your all-time favourite stand-up comedian? Have they been a source of inspiration for you? Dylan Moran is my favourite comedian in the world and my favourite comedian in America is Bill Burr. Throughout your career, you have done a lot of work with Jon Lovitz. How has it been working with Jon on different projects over the years? He’s always annoyed me be-

cause he makes me laugh when I don’t expect it! He’s one of the few guys that makes me crack. He’s a good man, and he’s funny. Producing, directing, acting and doing stand-up comedy. Which of these would you say interests you the most and why? Each has its own discipline, but I always submerge myself into whatever it is that I do. They call creativity the merciless mystery of innovation, but it doesn’t always come to you. When it does come to you, whether it’s a joke in stand-up, a good idea for screenplay, or if you have an idea when you’re reading a screenplay on how to act it and what to bring to it, it all counts. In this new movie I am doing with Adam Sandler for Netflix called “The Ridiculous Six”, I was just thinking about how to bring something into the lines to make the lines funny. I thought of a pretty funny idea where I try to make him uncomfortable by reading the lines in a fun and sensual way. I do this because I know Adam will play off of it in a funny way. Right now, Adam and I are brothers and I sometimes become too comfortable with him and almost in love with him. I try to make him laugh, it can be pretty funny. Obviously you can’t do it too much, but sometimes inappropriate behaviour and attitude seems to be pretty funny, and that’s what I do. In “Grown Ups”, you worked alongside Chris Rock. Tell us a little bit about that experience? He’s the one who talked me into going back into stand-up. The idea of going back into it scared me, but he reassured me that it would be okay and that I would be good at it. He said I could be the best at it; I just have to do it. It’s nice, if he says that – you have to believe it. It is well known that you have the ability to impersonate almost 50 celebrities. Which celebrity impression is your favourite one to do? Which was/is the most difficult one for you to do? I’m not too sure; I don’t really do them
in my acts anymore. I liked to do the guys that do a parody of themselves, like Christopher Walken was fun to do, but now everyone does him so it’s not as fun anymore. Al Pacino is fun to do. The way he talks, it’s fun. Do you have any pre-performance rituals that you do before stepping on stage to do stand-up comedy? What about rituals before stepping into a take for a movie? Yep! I do a little stretching, some yoga. I like to go over some stuff that I like to do. I carry little things with me, something from my daughter, something from my Dad, something from my Grandfather and something from my wife. I keep them in my pocket. You have been married to Patricia since 2011. How supportive has she been for you over the years? A life changer. She’s the girl I was dreaming about meeting one day, it just took longer than I thought. We’re a team, and with our new T.V. show called “Real Rob”, it’s not a reality show, it’s a scripted show. She’s been very supportive with that too! Over the duration of your career, what destination has been your favourite to travel to for work? Tell us a little bit about it? I liked shooting a movie in Hong Kong – that was fun! The food is interesting, and it’s a big city but it’s also China. I was there when the British were handing back Hong Kong to the Chinese after 100 years. It was history, and it was nice to be there for that. It was also the party of a century. I was there for a couple of months and attended a party with Sean Connery, Wolfgang Puck and Catherine Zeta-Jones; that was quite the night! Rob Schneider will be performing in Ottawa at Centrepointe Theatre on Saturday, February 21st at 7pm alongside Jon Lovitz for an unforgettable night of stand-up comedy.

Canadian Winters 1 Prevent heat loss by wearing a warm hat, scarf, and mittens or gloves. Dressing in layers may also keep you warmer.
3 Keep entranceways and sidewalks clear of ice and snow. Report hazards on sidewalks or pathways to your landlord or the City.
4 Put on moisturizer/skin lotion if you plan on going outside. The cold, dry air associated with Canadian winters can damage your skin if you don't take any precautions.
5 Carry a small bag of grit, sand or non clumping cat litter in your jacket pocket or handbag, to sprinkle when you are confronted with icy sidewalks, steps, bus stops, etc.

Choose a good pair of winter boots. For warmth and stability look for these features: well-insulated, waterproof, thick non-slip tread sole made of natural rubber, wide low heels, light-weight.
Always have a pair of mitts and a warm toque with you or in your car. You never know what can happen in the cold Canadian winters.

DIY WINTER BEAUTY PRODUCTS
Moisturizing FACES Mask Coconut Oil To look and feel great, healthy-looking skin is essential. Unfortunately, the harsh Ottawa climate this time of year can cause serious dryness. This ultra moisturizing mask will leave your skin incredibly soft and hydrated.
The uses for coconut oil are pretty much endless. It can be used as an all over body moisturizer, makeup remover (bonus: it helps strengthen and moisturizes eyelashes, and can actually make them grow longer), under-eye moisturizer, it helps whiten teeth, it contains natural SPF so it acts as a great tanning oil if you are hitting the beach down south somewhere this year, and it makes for a great deep-conditioning hair mask.
Mash up a medium, ripe banana Mix in 2 tablespoons of honey and one egg yolk Apply to face and neck and let it set for 10-20 minutes before rinsing off
Sugar Lip Scrub Dry, chapped lips can be instantly made smooth by gently rubbing this exfoliating scrub over them for a few minutes.
To use as hair conditioning treatment: Wet hair and towel dry Heat a few tablespoons of coconut oil and work just enough into hair to saturate it (length and texture of hair will determine how much you end up needing). Focus on the ends, but if you have dry scalp you can work it right into your roots as well.
Take one tablespoon of granulated sugar (white or brown both work), and mix in just enough honey so that the sugar gets all stuck together. Once a week, rub on lips and let sit for a minute, then wipe off with a damp cloth and apply lip balm.
24 | February 2015
Wrap hair in a towel or cover. For best results, let it sit over night. If you have thin hair, you might have to shampoo twice to get the oily feeling out, but when you do it will look and feel so much softer, stronger, and healthier.

Everyone wants to look and feel younger these days. A few simple products and lifestyle changes can have a huge impact when you are trying to keep the effects of aging at bay.
Just like your whole body, skin requires certain nutrients. An antioxidant moisturizer can not only hydrate, but help protect from environmental stressors and keep its elasticity.
There are tons of high-quality shampoos designed to fight hair loss and promote hair growth.
Eye around skin is more delicate, and therefore more prone to wrinkles, puffiness and dark circles, and requires its own specific cream.

Smoking is still one the most preventable causes of early aging and health problems.
Sun damage is a main culprit for early wrinkles and discolouration. Daily SPF and wearing sunglasses (excessive squinting can actually create wrinkles) can go a long way.

WHY IS SAINT VALENTINE ASSOCIATED WITH LOVE? February 14th is the Christian feast day of Saint Valentine. There are two legends about the saint. One legend suggests that then-emperor Claudius II prohibited marriage of young men because he wanted them to be soldiers instead. Regardless, Valentine continued to performer marriages. The other legend points to Valentine falling in love with Claudius’ daughter and sent her a letter prior to execution signed ‘from your Valentine’.
WHY IS CUPID ASSOCIATED WITH VALENTINE’S DAY? Cupid is the Roman god of love. His name in Latin (Cupido) translates to ‘desire’ in English. Cupid is armed with a bow and arrow that, when his arrow strikes someone, fills the target with uncontrollable desire. Cupid’s association with desire, love and romance makes him a natural symbol of Valentine’s Day.
WHY ARE RED ROSES A VALENTINE’S DAY FAVOURITE? Charles ii of Sweden introduced the idea of flowers symbolizing emotions in the 18th century. Each colour represented a different emotion: white for purity, yellow for peace and red for passion and love. The tradition continues today.
WHY DO PEOPLE SEND AND EXCHANGE CARDS ON VALENTINE’S DAY? Unlike many Valentine’s Day traditions, this tradition finds its roots in recent British history. Two key things happened in 19-century Britain: 1) the postal services rates were cheap and attainable to the general public, this making sending cards by post cost-effective; & 2) mass production of cards also became cost-effective. In short, cards became an easy way for anyone to say, ‘I love you’.
WHY ARE CHOCOLATES SO COMMON ON VALENTINE’S DAY?
26 | February 2015
Chocolate has always been considered an aphrodisiac. When cocoa beans were sent to Europe, the legend of the Mexican ruler Montezuma and his many wives travelled to Europe. Over time, chocolatiers (Cadbury was the first) began creating heart-shaped boxes filled with chocolates.
Treat yourself. Order a pizza, throw on a comedy movie or watch sports.

Go to the gym. It’s a great way to break a sweat and keep your mind off of Valentine’s Day. Plus you’ll walk out of the gym feeling good!
3
Invite your single buddies over for a poker night and some drinks, or go out to a pub for a few appetizers and beverages!
4
Donate the time you have on Valentine’s Day to a hobby that you’ve neglected in the past. Perfect day to re-discover past hobbies!

Just kick-it. A lot of people over-think Valentine’s Day. You don’t need to. Treat it like any other day.

Groundhogs don’t eat for 150 days when hibernating, during which time they only lose 1/4 of their body weight due to their lower metabolism.
3
Groundhogs burrow holes that can be up to 6 feet deep, and can be as long as 20 feet! They usually have two entrances so that they can escape from intruders if needed.
4
Groundhogs have a top speed of only 8mph, which is much less than majority of their predators.
5
Groundhogs are also referred to as woodchucks, whistle-pigs and land beavers.

Even if you haven’t see it you’ve heard of it. It’s a classic that epitomizes what Valentine’s Day is all about – love.
It might not take place on Valentine’s Day, but name a girl that doesn’t love this movie.
The tagline is, “The Romantic Film that Started it All” so how can you go wrong?
Nothing like an imminent epic disaster to bring together two strangers from very different backgrounds.
Love lasts after death. This movie shows that ghosts can still love you and impact your life with the help of psychic Whoopi Goldberg.
BEST and WORST Michael Myers is funny. This is not. It’s a romantic comedy that is neither romantic nor comedic.
It’s named after the day and features a star-studded cast. It’s got to be good, right? Wrong. Where Love Actually succeeds on all levels this fails miserably.
Real-life-then-lovers Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez are a hitman and lesbian assassin duo that fall in love. The plot and storyline are so bad that it nearly ended Affleck’s career.
Oh, what’s that? The wedding planner (Jennifer Lopez) falls for and steals her client (Matthew McConaughey)?! That’s love, right?
This is the anti-Notebook. It’s as if Gosling was tired of being labeled ‘that guy’ and responded by starring in this tale of failed love.

The movie that made internet romances socially acceptable. Tom Hanks makes this list twice.
Lifting a stereo over your head to serenade your sweetheart used to be a go-to move. I guess it could still work with an iPhone?
Swayze makes the list again because he’s able to win over ladies as a dance expert or a ghost. He had what it takes to be a love guru.
A romantic movie most guys would be happy to watch. Yes, the backdrop is football but this movie is all about love.
Like Hanks and Swayze, Meg Ryan makes another appearance on this list. I guess there’s just something about Meg.
VALENTINE’S DAY MOVIES DiCaprio and Winslet are back! Only this time they are highlighting martial strife in 1950s America. It’s not bad, but it’s so damn depressing that you want to steer clear on love day.
Good movie. But this movie shows that the power of love can compel people to obsession that leads to the murder of a pet rabbit.
Revolutionary Road (2009)
Fatal Attraction (1987)
Lost all faith in love and humanity as a whole? Then this is the movie for you! Everyone lies and cheats on each other in a vicious cycle of deception.
The partnership worked in Pretty Woman so it should work again, right? Nope. The dialogue and characters are one-dimensional and predictable. Lighting in a bottle wasn’t caught twice.
This couple hates each other. I mean, REALLY hates each other. This bitter, booze-soaked couple chirps each other all film long.

Mediation: Is it for You? By: Caspar van Baal
Over the course of their lifetimes, many people will encounter a family situation that calls for expertise that they do not possess. For instance, a person may need assistance to resolve a family conflict, arrive at a more workable shared parenting arrangement, or conclude other arrangements arising from a divorce or separation. There are several options available in these circumstances, including court litigation, collaborative family law and mediation. In this article, I will address some frequently asked questions on mediation, a practical and costeffective approach to resolving family issues: What is mediation? Mediation is a process where the parties meet with a neutral person who assists you in your discussions to reach an agreement. In family law matters, almost all mediators are experienced lawyers who have received specialized mediation training. The mediator facilitates the discussion, provides information and options and assists in the negotiations. The mediator is a neutral third party facilitator, not your or your spouse’s lawyer. The mediator does not decide; you and your spouse do. In the case of a separation, most mediators will draft the separation agreement, which each party then takes to their own lawyer for independent legal advice. Your lawyer will explain to you your legal rights and obligations under the terms of the proposed Agreement. How does it differ from other approaches to arriving at a settlement/resolution? In mediation you are in control of the process and the outcome. When you are in court, you do not have control over the process or the outcome of the proceedings as the judge decides. Mediation is also different from the collaborative family law process. In the collaborative family law process there is no neutral third party mediator. Instead, each spouse is represented by a specially trained lawyer where the parties, together with their lawyer and possibly other professionals (financial, family relations experts), negotiate an agreement. What are the advantages of mediation? There are many advantages of mediation in a separation. You and your spouse choose your mediator and you control the outcome of the process as you negotiate and decide on the terms of your agreement. Contrary to court proceedings, successful mediations are a respectful non-adversarial process where you and your spouse cooperate to find
Caspar van Baal 38 | February 2015
solutions which are the best for you and your children. Although successful mediations generally require two or more meetings and you will need to have your own lawyer explain your rights and obligations under the proposed agreement before it is signed, the process is much faster than going to court, which can take years to be resolved. As a result, the cost of mediation is much less than the legal fees for protracted litigation. Is mediation for everyone? If you and your spouse cannot communicate or work together to find solutions through dialogue, then mediation may not be the right option for you. Mental health issues, abuse during the marriage or a power imbalance may also render mediation an unsuitable option. Because mediation is a voluntary process, a willingness to cooperate, compromise and reasonably discuss issues to find solutions is key to success. Can my lawyer participate with me in the mediation? Yes. However, to save costs, many clients go to mediation without their lawyers. If you have a lawyer, you can seek his or her advice before or after mediation sessions. Being prepared with clear objectives and relevant documents (financial information, etc.) will increase the likelihood of a successful outcome at mediation. How do I find a mediator? Should I look for certain qualifications? Ask a friend, relative or colleague who has gone through mediation for a referral. You can also contact a family law lawyer and ask for a referral to a mediator. Professional organizations such as the Ontario Association for Family Mediation (https://www.oafm.on.ca) or Family Mediation Canada (http://www.fmc.ca) are valuable sources of information. Membership in these organizations is a good indicator that the mediator has received specialized mediation training and meets the required standards. You can also go to or contact the Family Law Information Centre (FLIC) at the Ottawa Court House located at 161 Elgin Street.

COVER STORY
What happens when two best friends begin playing music with each other between classes at University? Usually, it is just a hobby that people do to keep busy. However, with Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley, the two stars of Florida Georgia Line, it became much more than just a hobby. Exploding out of nowhere in 2012 with their hit, “Cruise”, which has become the biggest country single of all time, these two artists changed the country music world forever. Florida Georgia Line self-released an EP of originals called “Anything Like Me” in December 2010, which led to signing a publishing and management deal with Big Loud Mountain. Since then Florida Georgia Line has broken country chart records.

Florida Georgia Line produces music about working hard and playing hard, enjoying every moment life has to offer, relaxing with a nice drive or a few beverages, and just kickin’ it. The duo has released hit after hit, as they continue to grow in popularity each year. FACES Magazine had the opportunity to catch up with Tyler Baddard of Florida Georgia Line to discuss how it all started, the history with his bandmate Brian, their proudest accomplishments and the challenges they have faced over the years.

Dayna Bourgoin Since graduating from the Radio Broadcasting program at Algonquin College, Dayna Bourgoin has built quite a career for herself in the country music industry. Starting out in the Promotions Department at Y105 (CKBY) in 1999, she worked her way up to the title of Music Director, and eventually moved on to become the Music Director at CMT – one of the most well-respected country music media outlets in Canada. It didn’t take long before 604 Records (headed by Nickelback’s front man, Chad Kroeger, and attorney Jonathon Simkin) came knocking on her door and offered her an Artist Management position. Now, Dayna is back in Ottawa as the Assistant Program Director and Radio Personality for Ottawa’s New Country 94. We got a chance to catch up with Dayna about her experiences in the industry, the success of Bell Media’s newest radio station, and what country fans in Ottawa have to look forward to in the near future. Growing up in Ottawa, what led you to want to become a radio broadcaster? Music was my passion growing up - listening to it, playing it, writing it, so radio seemed like the perfect fit. I wanted to find a job that I loved going to everyday and let’s be honest… can you really call this gig work? Did you always have a passion for country music? Who were some of your favourite artists growing up? Absolutely! My mom listened to Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson all the time, but high school is where I really found my love of country with Shania, Faith Hill, Brooks & Dunn and Garth Brooks. What would you say has been your greatest accomplishment so far? My daughter - she’s beautiful, smart, funny, sweet, and talented. She is what drives me and
14 | February 2015
makes me a better person. How’s that for cheesy answer of the day?
Because we are right in the Byward Market, we bring a much more local aspect to the listeners.
When you joined the team at CMT it took you to Toronto. What did you miss most about Ottawa while you were away? My family! I came home a lot and can now drive that stretch of the 401/416 in my sleep.
Country music is bigger than ever right now. Why do you think that is? It really has become the new rock music and honestly has the best artists. It has this awesome blend of country, rock and pop that is so catchy and fun to listen to. When you go to a country concert at the CTC it’s a full-on rock show with crazy energy and an awesome vibe. When they cut off the alcohol before the main act hits the stage you know it’s a party!
You are now with Bell Media, and have a really interesting dual role there as Assistant Program Director and Radio Personality for Ottawa’s New Country 94. How do you balance the two? Do you prefer being behind the scenes or in the spotlight? It has been a blast helping launch the station. Lots of hours, but so worth it! I definitely prefer behind the scenes. I am trying hard to embrace the spotlight, which is totally out of my comfort zone. During your time at 604 Records, you signed country music artist Dallas Smith. More recently, you had an exclusive concert with Dallas, Kira Isabella and Jordan McInstosh. What was that like? Dallas was an amazing artist to work with. He’s so incredibly talented and so down-to-earth. When we first met, we decided one of the goals was to reach platinum status (80,000 units sold) which he ended up getting for his song “Tippin’ Point.” Watching the success he has had makes me beyond proud. Our exclusive concert with Dallas Smith, Kira Isabella and Jordan McIntosh was amazing! Tickets sold out in less than 6 minutes and we were totally blown away by the response. Ottawa’s New Country 94 has gotten off to a great start. What do you think sets this radio station apart from the rest? New country music is such a hot format that even people who wouldn’t normally listen are checking us out. We’re playing the best new country artists and are definitely attracting a younger audience.
What do you love most about working in the country music industry? The artists are incredible. They are so approachable and tell stories that reflect your own life. It’s amazing watching an artist work so hard, and then seeing it all pay off. There’s nothing better than getting a personal call from Dallas Smith thanking Ottawa’s New Country 94 for helping him get to #1 on the Canadian Country Chart. He also broke a record for the most spins in one week by an artist, which New Country 94 led the charge on. February will also be bringing Nickelback to the Canadian Tire Centre. Did you work with Chad Kroeger often at 604 Records? He worked very closely with certain artists and co-wrote with some as well. I actually only met the guy once. Perhaps he was a little busy touring the world and marrying other Canadian rock stars. If you weren’t a radio broadcaster, what do you think you would be doing? I want to say tour manager, music publisher, or maybe an entertainment lawyer? Yeah I know, all music related. I truly don’t know. @daynabourgoin

What is the best thing about being a stand-up comedian? According to Jeremy Hotz, a professional stand-up comedian born in Ottawa, it’s that nobody tells you what to do – you just talk about your life and funny encounters and people always get a crack out of it. Jeremy Hotz is not like many other stand-up comedians. This talented comedian is able to grab his audiences by using his completely original, confusing and very astute style of observational comedy. Jeremy has worked in both the stand-up comedy industry, the TV and movie industry, as well as the writing industry. He has won several awards for his work over the years, including the “Gemini Award” for having the “Best Performance in a Comedy Show or Series” from his dedicated work on “The Newsroom” TV show. FACES had a chance to catch up with the Ottawa-born stand-up comedian to discuss life in the stand-up comedy industry, the TV and film industry, and how growing up in Ottawa helped him become the famous stand-up comedian his is today. You were born in Ottawa. Did you enjoy growing up in Ottawa? What schools did you attend? I did. It was good, but it was different. When I grew up in Ottawa, it was a lot smaller. I remember there were a lot less people walking around. It is way busier now and it seems more like a city. When I grew up there, it seemed more like a town. We played street hockey all the time and cars rarely came by. What was your favourite thing to do as a child in Ottawa and why? There was an old A&W on Wellington. It was fun because you could order sitting in the parking lot and they would just bring it out to you since their drive-through window was shut down. We would buy 10 baby burgers for a contest going on at the time, we had fun with that for a while. Do you remember when you first discovered you had a true passion for stand-up comedy? Was there a specific source of inspiration that led you to become a comedian? Was stand-up comedy always your dream job or was there another line of work you always wanted to do? I wanted to do something where nobody would tell me

“
My favourite thing about stand-up is that I can go out and tell people how I’m feeling that particular day, and they pay me for it. what to do. I went to the National Arts Centre, where I saw George Carlin and I thought - well nobody tells him what to do. I was telling my brother that one day, I was going to play at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. He laughed at me and told me it was never going to happen, but it’s happened 8 or 9 times now. You’re first shot at stand-up comedy was at a lounge/ live music and entertainment bar in Ottawa called “The Roxy” (now known as Yuk-Yuk’s) on amateur night. Do you remember the very first show you performed there? What was that experience like for you? Yeah, it was brutal and I lost to Big John Woodbury and Angelo Tsarouchas, who had never been on stage before. So that’s the room that I’m going back to play at for Howie. The club owner of Yuk-Yuk’s was a huge fan of your standup comedy performances on amateur nights at Yuk-Yuk’s, which is what led you to make a career out of it. Tell us a little bit about the relationship you had with the club owner? Are you two still friends today? Yeah, we are actually.I don’t get there very much; only when I get to see my folks. He helped me at the beginning. I remember hanging up posters with that guy. I got picked up on amateur night when I did a show in Ottawa. There was no club in Ottawa, so I started to bus to Toronto for Yuk Yuk’s amateur night. I remember walking right from the bus station to the club and I just waited, and waited to go on, absolutely destroyed. Their manager kept asking me, “Do you want to do this professionally?” I had nothing going on at the time, so I thought alright, why not! They were opening up a club in Ottawa a few months after that, and he introduced me to Howie who happened to be there that night. Sure enough, Howie moved to Ottawa! I helped him and he opened up a club, which became my home club in Ottawa. In 1997, you performed at the “Montreal Just For Laughs Comedy Festival”. After your performance, your received a standing ovation from the entire audience. What was this experience like for you? It felt really good. I performed there a few times and really enjoyed it. You returned to the “Montreal Just For Laughs Comedy Festival” in 1999, 2002, 2003 and 2005. Out of all of these performances, which festival did you most prefer? Probably the first time actually. It was the most exciting for
”
sure. After my performance, I received the standing ovation. I was told by people that I was “one of the guys now” and that I “didn’t have to worry about anything as I would be taken care of”, all that stuff. It was pretty exciting. Throughout your life, you’ve had the opportunity to make an appearance on both the “Late Show with David Letterman” as well as on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”. Tell us a little bit about these two experiences? Which show did you enjoy being on more? They’re different, so it’s tough to say. Jay was a friend of mine and we would mess around and have fun on the show. I would sometimes just show up for a set with Jay. I was more comfortable on that one since I did it 5 or 6 times. On Letterman’s show, it’s different. I see those guys from the show on TV. Even the camera man is more famous than you, so it’s sometimes pretty intimidating. You have a very unique style of stand-up comedy. Unlike most other stand-up comedians, you’re able to entertain your audience using a confusing, original and yet, very astute style of observational comedy. Does this style of stand-up comedy come natural to you? When did you first realize that this style of comedy was a huge hit? Well back in the old days, there were a lot of different styles. I tried a few different styles. I realized at an early stage that people loved the material I had. They loved the approach and how different it was, how I could relate to people through my performances. I felt like I wasn’t part of the world, which is why I put my hands on my face. It helps with intimidation and it helps me feel better on stage. You have appeared on several different TV comedy shows/ networks, such as MTV, CTV, Comedy Central, etc. You have also appeared in films such as “My Favorite Martian”, “Speed 2”, the four-part mini-series “Married Life” and lastly, you also appeared in “The Newsroom” series, in which you received a Gemini Award for “Best Performance in a Comedy Show or Series”. How do you find your acting career compares to your stand-up comedy career? It’s nice having your own show. I write all of my own stuff, I’m the only one out there; I don’t have to share any great moments with anyone. When I show up for a stand-up performance, there’s very few of us backstage before and after the show, which is very different from working in TV since there’s always a lot more people with you in the TV industry. It can sometimes be a lonely situation.

Do you ever get chances to come home to visit the city of Ottawa? If so, what is your favourite spot in Ottawa to visit? Yeah, I enjoy going there to the different places in the Market. I like to visit my mom and always try to visit my parents a few times a year. So I get to come back and I’ll play for some guys that were there for me since the very beginning. I like to do that for clubs from time-to-time. It’s where I started and it’s much more personable. It does change though, and you have to adapt. Where is your favourite place to travel to for work? What about your favourite place to travel to for vacation? I don’t take vacations because all that happens is that you come back with photographs of yourself standing next to different trees. You look at them and say, “Oh look, there’s me standing over there!” It just seems like a stupid thing to do, so I don’t take vacations. My favourite place to travel to for work is Ireland. I went there a few times and it was a lot of fun. Australia was really good too. It would have to be one of the two. Who is your favourite stand-up comedian? How have they inspired you to become who you are today? My favourite was George Carlin. He’s the one that got me into it at the very beginning because I thought I should do that, so that I could not really have a real job. He didn’t have an influence on me though because he changed and became more political, I don’t really do that. You have been given so many awards throughout your career to recognize your incredible talent. Which award meant the most to you and why? Truthfully, I’m not really an awards man. However, my favourite award would be the Gemini Award I won for The Newsroom because that’s the one that I put on the table of the adjustor in the immigration office in the United States; it turned the whole interview around. As soon as he saw my big trophy, he started touching it like it was really important. What is your favourite TV show? Favourite movie? Growing up, I liked watching “Get Smart” re-runs. I also liked coming home for lunch from Fisher Park High School, which is where I went to high school, and watching the Spiderman cartoon series. Do you have any pre-performance rituals that you perform before each act? If I’m not vomiting because of my anxiety, I’ll probably be untying and then tying my shoes. I have a weird thing about the right tightness about my shoes when I go on stage. I don’t know why, I don’t wish that I have it and I don’t know where it comes from. What is your favourite thing about doing stand-up comedy professionally? Can you see yourself doing stand-up comedy for many more years to come? Yeah, I can see myself doing it for a long time to come. My favourite thing about stand-up is that I can go out and tell people how I’m feeling that particular day, and they pay me for it. Jeremy Hotz will be returning to Ottawa to perform on Thursday, February 26th and Sunday, March 1st at Yuk Yuk’s Comedy Club in Ottawa. @JeremyHotz

Valentine’s Day Cheats To Avoid Over-Indulging It is not surprising that eating out is a fairly common occurrence for many of us with our busy schedules. Whether or not you’re in a relationship it is quite likely that you will participate in some indulgence on Valentine’s Day. On your next visit to a restaurant keep some of these tricks in mind to help you make healthy choices.

Tip #1:
@Arbournutrition
Tip #2:
As a nutritionist, I believe that there is no onesize-fits-all, miracle cure for health. Health is individual, and so is the approach that I take with each client. Whether your goal is to lose weight, combat dry skin and hair, manage a chronic health condition, enhance athletic performance, or simply improve your diet and lifestyle, I will coach you to success.
What’s more romantic then sharing a meal with your loved one? This Valentine’s Day, opt to share an appetizer, entrée, and dessert instead of each having one of your own. You can also skip the dessert and order two appetizers instead. This will not only limit the amount of calories that you both consume, but this also gives you the opportunity to try several different dishes on the menu without feeling overly full.
If you opt for more formal fare and each order an appetizer, entrée and dessert choose wisely! Instead of choosing a fried, or cheesy baked appetizer opt for the soup of the day or feature salad. Once your entrée arrives, ask the server for a takeout box and place half of your entrée in the takeout box to avoid overeating. Not only is this great for your waistline but also saves you from worrying about lunch for the next day! When food is in front of us, we tend to want to finish it all, if you take away the temptation, you will still feel satisfied without feeling bloated. The first few bites of your meal are always the best, so you will not feel restricted if you lessen the portion!
Tip #3:
Eating out is a nice treat, and a convenient option. However, keep in mind that when you eat out regularly the fat, calories, sugar and sodium can add up. Foods prepared at most restaurants will contain ingredients that are richer than those that you may use at home. Here are my three main tips and words to look for when choosing your next restaurant item!
Enjoy your meal and eat slow! Your brain needs time to realize that you are full, put your fork down and rest between mouthfuls. If a bread basket is delivered to the table, pass it around and then ask for it to be removed to avoid temptation. Order a glass of water as this can help satiate you as you wait for your food to arrive. Limit yourself to one or two drinks, and chose wisely. A nice bottle of wine (white wine generally has less calories then red but not by much so choose the option you prefer), or a spirit mixed with tonic or soda water.
Nutritionist Approved Valentine’s Day Dessert Valentine’s Day wouldn’t be the same without a delicious dessert! Here are some ways to have your cake and eat it too without feeling restricted and not satisfying your sweet tooth! Most restaurants now have a mini dessert option on the menu. This option generally comes with a couple of desserts; a few bites of each, and is perfect for sharing! These are reasonable sized and are drastically lower in calories than their full-sized counterparts. Baked goods such as cakes, brownies and cookies can contain more fat and calories than you should consume in an entire day. Angel food cake or a dessert crepe loaded with fruit are generally lower in fat and contain potassium, vitamin C, and fibre. Try and skip the whipped cream to make it even more nutritious. If the option is available to you, opt for sorbet or frozen yogurt that will pack fewer calories and less fat. If all the desserts appear to be decadent, seek out fresh fruit instead. Although it might not be exactly what you are craving, you will satisfy that sweet tooth and eating fresh fruit is one of the healthiest dessert options out there.
Healthy Options for Valentine’s Day Desserts
Dark Chocolate, Fruit and Nut Truffles These little desserts are great because they are individually portioned out but they also carry loads of antioxidants, good fats and fibre. I have used cranberries, dried pineapple, candied ginger, goji berries and baked orange rind for this recipe and all are crowd pleasers. Feel free to substitute your favourite fruit and nut combinations in this recipe! Also keep in mind if you are vegan, or looking for a nut free dessert for a party, you can substitute the nuts for a seed such as sunflower or pumpkin seeds.
Ingredients
(makes 20-28 servings) ½ cup of dark chocolate chips or a dark chocolate bar ½ cup of semisweet chocolate or semisweet bar ½ cup of dried goji berries ½ cup of chopped pecans, toasted
Directions: 1.
Using a double boiler, melt both chocolates together and mix thoroughly.
2.
Stir in fruit and nut mixture.
3.
On a baking sheet place several mini muffin paper cases and add 1 tbsp of mixture in each. Place in fridge until chocolate is set, about 30 minutes. These truffles will keep refrigerated for up to 5 days.

HEALTH & FITNESS February is here and flu season is over, right? Wrong. The flu lingers around yearlong, and February can be one of the most flu-ridden months of the year. Instead of trying to fight the flu once you get it, fight back with some preventative foods that can help keep your body healthy.
Garlic Stink out sickness with garlic. Strong-smelling foods, like garlic, can both reduce the risk of getting the flu and help improve recovery according to a 2002 British study.
Probiotics and prebiotics help your digestive tract stay healthy. Enhancing your immune system functions with yogurt can help fend off the flu.
Build up your defense system by drinking 3 – 5 cups of black, green or white tea every day. A Harvard study found that tea drinkers have immune system defenses that are 4 times stronger than non-tea drinkers. This is likely due, in part, to the high theanine content found in tea.
Tea
Mushrooms Fungus to fight the flu? You bet! Mushrooms are loaded with an infection-fighting compounds called beta glucans. In addition, mushrooms also contain selenium that, in higher doses, can reduce the risk of getting the flu.
Blueberries, cranberries and strawberries are all rich in antioxidants that can help boost your immune system, provide essential vitamins and fight the flu.

Toyota Tacoma The tried-and-true Tacoma is a mainstay of the mid-size truck world, with three body styles to meet the demanding needs of equally demanding drivers. A 159-hp 2.7-liter four-cylinder is standard; a 236-hp 4.0-liter V-6 is optional. Both manual and automatic transmissions are available as are rear-wheel and four-wheel drive. The rough-and-tumble TRD Pro Series adds a locking rear differential, raised suspension, and an extra dose of visual machismo. An all-new Tacoma will go on sale for 2016.

The Colorado is Chevy’s first new mid-size pickup in ages, with fresh looks, new tech, and convenience features galore. It’s quieter, more solid feeling, and civilized. Power comes from a 200-hp 2.5-liter fourcylinder with 191 lb-ft of torque or an optional 3.6-liter V-6 with 305 hp and 269 lb-ft. The V-6 offers an optional 7000-lb tow rating. Extended or crew cabs, five- and six-foot beds are available, as is a six-speed manual for base models; LT and Z71 models get a sixspeed automatic.
Chevrolet Colorado
Nissan Frontier
The Canyon is the upscale twin to the Chevy Colorado; like its sibling, it re-enters the market new and improved in every way. Appealing to modern buyers, the Canyon offers tons of tech and convenience features. Extended- and crew-cab styles as well as five- and six-foot beds are available; so is a six-speed manual for base models while the rest get a six-speed automatic. A 200-hp four-cylinder is standard; a 305-hp V-6 will be available with an optional 7000-lb tow capacity.
The old stone that is the Frontier keeps rolling—its basic design dates to 2005, it’s had only minimal changes since 2009, and a replacement probably won’t arrive for a few more years. To meet the needs of buyers today, the Frontier offers extended-cab or crew-cab versions, with a base 152-hp 2.5-liter four or optional 261-hp 4.0-liter V-6, a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic, rear-wheel or all-wheel-drive versions, and trim levels ranging from base to the Baja-inspired Desert Runner.
