RUSSELL PETERS COMES TO OTTAWA ON HIS

DEPORTED TOUR

Russell Peters is known as the comedian who turned his childhood experience of racial bullying into a ground-breaking career in comedy.

Born in Toronto, he started doing comedy at the age of 19. After spending his 20s doing stand-up across the country, his career took off as video clips of his routines, which centered on his experiences growing up as a minority in Canada, went viral. In 2007, he became the first comedian to sell out the Air Canada Centre.

In 2013, Forbes listed Peters as the third highest paid comedian in the world. Today, Russell has expanded his career from comedy to acting and producing, including the music documentary series Hip Hop Revolution for which he co-produced and won an Emmy.

While he lives in LA, he is still an ambassador of the Canadian-Indian experience. Just last year, he starred in the Canadian series The Indian Detective, which was filmed in Toronto and Cape Town and aired on CTV with the highest ratings every time it aired.

If you didn’t know any of these things about Russell Peters, we wouldn’t be surprised.

He’s known for being one of the most famous, ‘non-celebrities’ out there. And it’s by design.

Russell likes to keep a low profile in Hollywood and says he isn’t too good at social media, either.

But that’s just how we like him; down to earth and ready to dish out his controversy the way only he can. This is just what Russell Peters will be doing when his Deported Tour stops in Ottawa on November 18, armed with all new material.

Q: What’s one peice of advice you wish you had known at the beginning of your career?

ou’re bringing your Deported Tour to Canada in November which we’re super excited about.

Why is it called the Deported Tour?

Well, I mean you look at the climate we live in right now – I live in America. With all things considered, if anybody’s going to get deported in this country, it’s more than likely going to be me.

You say that you have a lot of new material for the show. What things are you drawing on?

Well mostly it’s about my real life, that’s what I usually write about. Now I know that everybody says the same thing when they start a new tour, that “this is my best”. I’m not going to say that... but what I’ve been hearing from the people that have seen the show is that this really is the best show they’ve seen from me in years.

Speaking of your years in comedy, this actually marks your 29th year since you started. How does that make you feel?

Old. Old and bitter.

Do you feel that comedy has changed now? Do you think it’s easier because of social media for kids to get into comedy?

Oh, it’s ridiculously easy for them now and that’s the problem. You know, what’s the expression? The longer you wait for something, the more rewarding it is? The problem is, today it’s as easy as putting a funny video up

on Youtube and all of a sudden you’re living the life. They don’t really understand struggle anymore and that doesn’t make it bad, it just makes it easy come, easy go.

How are you on social media? Do you consider yourself inclined to social media?

No, I’m really terrible at it. Also, you would think that I would have at least a million followers on Instagram but I don’t. I have all these kids hit me up from different countries saying, “Hey man, you’re the reason I got into comedy, you’re my inspiration”. So I click on their pages and they’ve got like 20 million followers!

This past year you’ve starred in three major comedies alongside some other amazing actors. Do you like acting better or would you rather be on stage?

I always love doing stand-up but I also enjoy acting. The problem for me is that I’m an immediate gratification type of person, so that’s why stand-up is great for me. Even when I’m in a store shopping and they don’t carry my size in something but they offer to order it in for me, I’m like “no I want it right now.”

How was filming the Indian Detective?

Oh I had a great time doing that, it was a really fun one to do. Although it hasn’t been renewed yet even though it had the highest ranking in Canadian TV every time it was on, so we’ll see.

You have a lot in common with your character Doug. How much of the creative development for that role did you have?

I just told them to write it and that I would add body to it. You give me the clothes and I’ll put the body into it. It was kind of collaborative in that regard, I understood what they wanted me to get across and they let me do it my way which was nice of them.

Do you have any special memories from performing in Ottawa?

Yuk Yuk’s was obviously my main memory there. I also used to come up back in the late ‘90s and host these cultural shows at Carleton and U of O for the Indian Students Association, which was almost 20 years ago.

Are there any bad habits or guilty pleasures you have while on tour?

I think poutine is a huge guilty pleasure of mine. As far as bad habits go, I do jiu-jitsu nowadays but the problem with me is that when I’m on tour it’s really hard to keep up with training. You also need someone really good to train with because it’s not something you can do on your own. So I think that’s not so much a guilty pleasure, but definitely a pleasure of mine. I’m looking forward to figuring out where I’m going to train while I’m on the road.

You mentioned that you’re going to be taking some time off after the tour to spend time with your daughter. Who’s more excited, you or her?

I love hanging out with her. We hangout every day. She has the best stories.

Yesterday she wrote me a story and taped it together so it was like a book. The title of the book was spelled “N-O F-A-C-K-IN-G”. So I go, “baby what is no facking?”

And she goes, “No, it’s no faking!” So I was pretty relieved after that. @therealRusselllp

WHY DO WE KISS UNDER A MISTLETOE? Some historians believe that the connection of kissing and mistletoes dates back to Norse mythology. According to some versions of the legend of Baldur, he was killed by an arrow made of mistletoe which made his mother, the goddess Frigg, weep tears of sorrow onto the arrow. Her tears turned into white berries she placed on her son’s wound, bringing him back to life. The Goddess Frigg was so happy that she blessed the Mistletoe plant and promised a kiss to all who passed underneath it.

The tradition of string Christmas lights comes from an interesting story of Thomas Edison in 1880. By that time, he was trying to think of creative ways to market his light bulbs, so he decided to illuminate the Nativity scene at his labratory with string lights for passers-by during Christmas.

Two years later, one of Edison’s followers created the first illuminated Christmas tree, again as a marketing tool.

WHY DO WE HANG STOCKINGS BY THE FIREPLACE? This tradition dates back to a legend involving St. Nicholas of Myra – who became the inspiration for Santa Claus. St. Nick was travelling through a small community when he was told about a poor merchant who was extremely concerned about the future for his three daughters. St. Nick wanted to help the family, but the man was extremely proud and St. Nick knew that he would never accept his charity.

The legend states that St. Nick rode past their home at night and threw three bags of gold coins down the chimney, which according to the story – landed in the stockings that the girls had hung up to dry at the fireplace. This story also explains the bags of chocolate coins that Santa traditionally leaves in stockings.

SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT PART 2 (1987) This was the second of five, yes five Silent Night, Deadly Night movies.

Without a doubt, this is the most awful of them all…The plot is about an escaped mental patient (his backstory is played out in the original movie) who murders someone in a Santa costume, steals his outfit and continues to fulfill a quest that his brother failed to do.

The quest? To find and murder Mother Superior. We won’t ruin the story, but since there are three more instalments, you can only imagine the cliffhanger this movie leaves the audience with as the credits (and heads) roll.

JACK FROST, REVENGE OF THE MUTANT KILLER SNOWMAN (2000) SANTA WITH MUSCLES (1996) Hulk Hogan plays an evil millionaire who falls down a garbage chute and becomes Santa after suffering brain damage. We could tell you more about the plot but that would mean that we think there is a chance that any of you want to watch this disaster.

Since we don’t, we will leave it at that.

Christmas EVIL (1980)

SANTA’S SLAY (2005) In this gem, Santa just happens to be the Son of Satan. What you didn’t know about Santa is that he lost a bet 1,000 years ago and that’s why he delivers gifts. Tired of bringing bratty kids gifts, Satan Santa is out for revenge. It is supposedly a ‘horror comedy’ that is neither scary or funny.

The only thing Santa Slays is two hours of your life that you will never get back.

What would you do if you walked in on your mom ‘making out’ with Santa Claus? Well, you would obviously dress up like Santa and become a serial killer. Yes. This is the actual plot of this Hollywood ‘classic’. The ending is so bananas it would have killed Jack Frost over and over again.

For those of you who missed the amazing first Jack Frost -- no, not the one with Michael Keaton – the evil snowman Jack Frost was dissolved by antifreeze at the end of it. In the sequel, Jack is brought back to ‘life’ with new powers. One of his most potent attacks is when he is able to split into a pack of hungry snowball children. I try to visit Montreal for a few days around Christmas so I can visit my family. I don’t always get to because some years I have to fly to Australia early to start the season.

What are some of your favourite memories of Christmas growing up and what about the season do you look forward to most?

Being with my family and seeing everyone all together is the best.

It’s the only time of year that everyone is in the same place!

What is the worst Christmas gift you’ve ever received from one of your sisters or brothers? Or the worst gift you’ve ever given?

I don’t make resolutions, they are things I try to do all year long anyway. Try my best every single day.

Are you a big Netflix fan? What are some of your favourite shows you’ve seen over the last couple years?

Netflix is a must for someone who travels so much like me. Recently, I’ve been into Riverdale.

What is the best concert you’ve ever seen live? Who are some of your favourite artists?

Taylor Swift 1989 concert hands down! I knew every word to every song so that made it super fun.

If you could go back in time and speak to yourself right before you won Junior Wimbledon, what advice would you give yourself in 2012, with everything you’ve experienced and learned over the last 6 years?

I think someone gave me a water bottle one year, that was pretty bad. I, on the other hand, always give amazing ones.

I probably wouldn’t say a word to myself before Junior Wimbledon 2012 because that worked out great! (Laughs)

Do you have a favourite Christmas movie and/or Christmas song?

You interact quite a bit with fans on social media, do you ever read your mentions? If so, how do you handle it? Do you laugh and enjoy it like most celebrities do on Jimmy Kimmel’s Celebrities Who Read Mean Tweets, or does it ever get to you?

Our family has an epic Christmas playlist that we blast on a continuous loop throughout the house.

It obviously includes Mariah Carey and Justin Bieber’s Christmas albums.

Are you someone that makes New Year’s Resolutions? If so, what was yours last year, or what will be your 2019 New Years Resolution?

I try to take it in stride, mean comments are actually a reverse compliment. There are always going to be jealous haters. I can’t make everyone happy so I just try to do me and ignore the rest.

My mom, for sure! She’s been with me through everything, all the ups and downs of my life and career.

I’m really into fashion. In terms of high end fashion, I’m a Chanel girl. I also love Vetements, a French fashion house,.

They have super cool oversized alternative pieces. You can also have style at every price point, so for basic pieces I love Mango.

What is a fashion mistake that you’ve seen too many guys make?

I think a sense of style is really important for a guy. I like when he looks put together, when you can tell he thought about his outfit.

If he wears cargo shorts and flip flops, I know he didn’t take time to think about it.

Heading into the 2019 tennis season, what are your goals and expectations for yourself?

I don’t want to put any expectations on myself except to do everything in my power to be the best tennis player I can be.

Cloud and accounting software firm Freeagent surveyed 1000 workers in the UK to see how they would feel about working for an artificially intelligent boss. The results of the survey were not nearly as resistant as one might think. 31% of the workers surveyed reported that they would be “happy” to work for a robo-boss, and 42% reported that they’d be “comfortable” with taking direction from AI.

DIVORCE IS (EXTREMELY) CONTAGIOUS

We’ve all seen the breakup bug circulate, but when it comes to divorce, three university research teams (Brown, Harvard and California State) joined forces to deliver some shocking statistics on how splits can have a ripple effect through families and friend groups. The study found that if close friends to you get a divorce, you become 75% more likely to get one as well. But it doesn’t stop there-if you have friendsof-friends who separate, the study found that your chances of splitting go up by 30%, making divorce more contagious than the flu.

YOUR SELF ESTEEM GETS BETTER WITH AGE The idea that it’s all downhill after 30 was just thrown out the window by a new study published in the Psychological Bulletin. The study found that most people experience their peak level of self esteem when they hit their 60s. This time in our lives is when we are most confident and establish in our careers and our relationships, and our children have grown up and are self-sufficient. This is why researchers claim that people in their 60s might be the most confident of us all.

KIDNEY STONES MAY COME TO PASS

People who have had kidney stones know all too well that if you are unlucky enough to get them, the only treatment is to pass them - an incredibly painful process. Now, researchers at the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have taken another look at the microbiology of kidney stones and discovered that they are not exactly the stones we have taken them for for centuries. Instead, they are layers of calcium-like substances that can grow and dissolve. The finding suggests that one day, kidney stones may be able to be dissolved in the kidney.

yan Gosling landed safely in Venice on Wednesday, August 29th with his fellow crew members from “First Man,” the highly anticipated opening film at the Venice Film Festival. It turned out to be a hugely successful mission as the film was met with wild applause from audiences and glowing reviews after its world premiere.

Before the day was over, the media began touting First Man as an early Oscar favourite and could well earn trophies for both Gosling and the film’s director, Damien Chazelle, who previously collaborated on 2016’s La La Land.

The film recounts the personal and professional journey of American astronaut Neil Armstrong as he underwent a de42 | FACES MAGAZINE

cade or rigorous training as part of the NASA space programme and Apollo 11 space mission. He would eventually make his mark in history by becoming to the first man to set foot on the moon on 20 July 1969.

“It’s a story about the landing on the moon but it’s also the story of a man who had to go to the moon in order to land on earth,” Gosling said. “There’s the physical mission but there’s also the emotional journey that Neil is on. My interpretation is that Neil was also looking for meaning and answers that he couldn’t find on earth and so he was compelled to look to the universe for those answers...There’s a duality that exists between the story that we know and the story that we were able to piece together and interpret.”

Gosling, who has distinguished himself in both smaller indie films - Drive, Blue Valentine, The Ides of March a - as well as big budget studio fare such as last year’s Blade Runner 2049 and of course La La Land - gives arguably his finest performance to date as Armstrong, capturing both the man’s steely determination as well as his introverted and cryptic personality.

Gosling headlines an impressive First Man cast that includes Claire Foy (Armstrong’s wife, Janet), Corey Stoll and Lukas Haas as Armstrong’s fellow Apollo 11 astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, respectively), Ciaran Hinds (NASA flight director Gene Kranz), Pablo Schneider (astronaut Jim Lovell), Kyle

handler (Deke Slayton, head of astronaut training), and Jason Clarke (astronaut Ed White).

First Man is every bit as gripping in its portrait of the highly successful and memorable Apollo 11 mission as is Ron Howard’s depiction of a nearly catastrophic subsequent moon mission in Apollo 13.

And just as Hanks added gravitas to that movie, Gosling in his own way captures Armstrong’s steady, resolute self. Much of the film revolves around the nearly decade-long astronaut training programme that saw Armstrong master not only the physical demands of space flight but the complex engineering and scientific tasks which the Apollo 11 mission entailed.

Said Gosling of the mission and its monu-

mental undertaking: “It’s hard to imagine the magnitude of risk, the potential for failure, and the improbability of success when a few pioneers decided to leave the earth.”

The 37-year-old Gosling was born and raised in Cornwall, Ontario and the handsome Canadian now makes his home in Los Angeles with his partner of the last six years, Cuban-American actress Eva Mendes, 44, and their two young daughters, Esmeralda, 3, and Amada Lee, 2.

ow did you approach playing a legendary figure like Neil Armstrong?

It was a challenge because Neil was so remote and private and fiercely introspective and we had to honour that and also create windows so that audiences might experience what he was experiencing emotionally.

What struck you in particular about the NASA space programme?

Everything I learned about the movie made it seem all the more impossible. It’s an incredible story and experience. The extremes of the story were so amazing - the idea that these astronauts were using their flashlight of s cientific knowledge to search the mysteries of the universe and then coming home to mow the lawn and taking out the trash. The duality of their experience and that of their families is hard to wrap your head around.

What was your perspective on how the film presents Armstrong’s personal journey and his life with his family during all the intense training and preparation?

The film is two stories: one it’s about landing on the moon and the other is about someone who needed to go to the moon in order to land on earth. Neil was going through a lot emotionally at the time of these missions and there was a private journey that he was on as well as (the space flight).

What kind of research did you do as part of your preparations for the role?

When I first went to NASA and I was given a tour by one of the astronauts that had just come back from the space station. He was talking about the perspective that being in space gives you and to see the world floating in the vastness of it.

It’s scary but it gives you an incredible perspective on your life. It’s amazing because you get home and three days later you’re still honking at people in traffic and getting back to the problems of everyday life. It’s a perspective that’s really hard to hang onto.

Did you meet with members of Armstrong’s family (Neil Armstrong died in 2012 at age 82 ED)?

The sons of Neil Armstrong helped me a lot, and I got to know his (second) wife (Carol), whose role in his-

tory is very important. NASA opened the door, I visited her museum dedicated to Armstrong.

take the plane into a controlled stall, and I thought “This is a terrible idea.”

Was it gratifying to get another chance at working with Damien Chazelle again after your highly successful work together on La La Land?

Damien is half Canadian and this helps.

(Laughs) The two films I’ve shot with him are the kind of spectacular works we all want to see in the movie theatres. I think Damien has strong instincts, he knows what people want, and he has a special gift for the cinema.

This was when I understood that there was a reason why Neil Armstrong be-came a great astronaut and why I did not... There was something very different about him and a lot of other astronauts. It also requires a certain breed of person to get into a plane (referring to Armstrong’s experience as a test pilot) that has never been flown before and push it to its breaking point for the sole purpose of furthering our knowledge of aeronautics.

It was nice to get back to work and dive into something that is just as vast as this there was so much for us to immerse ourselves in and it was a fascinating process to get to go to NASA and get to meet with people who were involved in these missions, to get to see what NASA is working on now and what they were working on then and spend time with Neil’s family was an incredible opportunity.

How do you think you would have handled that kind of risk?

I wouldn’t! (Smiles)...I realised very early on that I was very different from Neil in that way. (laughs) I can’t imagine the risks that they took to accomplish these missions and the sacrifices they made and that their families had to make as well. It’s such a singular experience and hard to relate to, really.

Apparently, though, you’re not a big fan of the kind of training you underwent in giant centrifuges and other machines which simulate some of the conditions of takeoff and the kinds of g-forces Armstrong and astronauts face?

No...I also thought it was important for my character to learn the ABCs of flying so I thought that what I needed to do was learn how to fly. Neil could fly before he could drive. But not too long into my flight lessons the instructor asked me to

When you were a young boy growing up in Canada, did you dream of becom-ing an astronaut?

I don’t want to bring down the room but I grew up post-Challenger (the explosion of the Challenger Space Shuttle in January, 1986 which killed all seven astro-nauts) and there was always a sense of sadness around space exploration and around human space flight.

That accident happened when I was very young and it was always very fresh in my mind... And when the subject did come up it had an inappropriate sense of mel-ancholy around it. That’s very different from the experience of people growing up in the 60s where these astronauts were making the impossible seem possible.

The fact is that, as Damien Chazelle says, space adventure no longer has any iconic value for our generation. It’s not even an adventure anymore and children aren’t dreaming of becoming astronauts any-more.

One of the most poignant moments in the film comes when Neil, at his wife’s insistence, is explaining the risks involved as he is about to leave on the moon mission?

Yeah, that was a hard scene to do.

It’s hard to imagine. Certainly being a fa-ther myself, which I think is the greatest privilege in your life, the idea of going to work is hard anyway for a parent. But imagine leaving the planet for the day - it’s hard to fathom and a lot of pressure on the family as well.

Some people today are signing up for missions to go into orbit which are being planned in the near future.

Would you ever want to go into space?

rowing up in Toronto, the youngest of nine siblings, Jully Black never imagined her career would take off as quickly as it did. Now, as a platinum selling recording artist and The Queen of R&B Soul, Jully is happy to let us know that her journey is just beginning.

Since being discovered at just 14-yearsold, Jully has managed to gain a huge following. Early on in her career, she was collaborating with Destiny’s Child and Kardinal Offishall. Her love and passion for music is evident in the work that she does. Jully has been titled as one of The 25 Greatest Canadian Singers Ever, and is truly a Canadian Inspiration.

Tell us about your childhood growing up in Toronto, what were some of your favourite memories there?

I was raised in a home where I was the youngest of nine kids. There was lots of light and excitement. My closest sibling to me was 10 years older than me, so I had many moms. I was raised in a community that was very diverse and inclusive and I think that really helped my outlook even as far as music and what I listened to. I’d be in one home listening to punk rock and then in another home we’d be listening to Bob Marley. The food was diverse as well, at my friends’ houses I was having Italian, Greek, Cantonese and Chinese. I often mention that in my talks, when people ask why I’m so relatable, I say it’s because of the foundations of where I was raised.

Not only does she demonstrate musical talent but Jully has also taken on a devotion for philanthropy. She is often giving back to the community and has co founded the Empowered in my Skin conference, where she is also a keynote speaker. Jully is also a WE DAY ambassador and LGBTQ+ communities.

The accomplished and inspiring Jully Black continues to inspire us everyday while redefining and expanding her abilities.

Can you take us back to when you were first discovered? Did you ever imagine that you would have such an amazing career?

I was first discovered at 14-years-old by a New York management company.

They were at an all ages event in Toronto and my sister was actually doing security so I tagged along with her. I could faintly hear this rapper and he was asking who’s got talent? I was begging my sister to let me go up...

I don’t even remember what song I sang. Before you know it he loved how I sounded and he sent me a contract and then I was on my way to New York. I also got signed at Sony at a very young age so that was the beginning of the dream. My full dream is on its way to being actualized. I am grateful for what God has done for me, but I’m also excited for what’s to come.

Looking back what kind of challenges did you face being a woman in the music industry?

I didn’t face challenges based on gender, I faced challenges based on genre. The challenge was being in Canada, where there was not enough platforms for R&B and soul music to be heard. There weren’t enough radio stations to play my music. I basically made a deliberate decision to be the voice of hip-hop and wife of hip-hop, so getting on songs with Kardinal Offishall was how I was able to get my voice out, because hip-hop had more of a platform than R&B in Canada.

We’ve also heard that you’re currently working on a new album, is that true?

Yes that’s true. We have two working titles right now actually. I have an EP that is already completed called The Reeducation of Jully Black and that is a playoff of Lauryn Hill’s Miseducation.

It’s been 20 years since Lauryn Hill’s Miseducation and I have been really influenced by it.

How are you approaching the new album? What was your inspiration behind all of it?

I am a woman. There is so much more I can say now without having to be too political. I can say what I mean and mean what I say even more so.

I’m in another space now as well, I lost my mom just under a year ago so my outlook on life is way different now.

It’s positive. I really do want to help those who are going through any sort of loss to understand that we don’t have to let life pin us down before we decide to get up. I also have a woman empowerment conference that I co-founded called Empowered in my Skin that is thriving so I’m really in that space of inspiration and motivation.

The album that I’m working on now is called Three Rocks and a Slingshot, so the title is kind of a play off of David and Goliath, meaning it doesn’t take much to take down your giant.

What does the Empowered in my Skin conference mean to you and what can people expect from it?

This event means that I am really living purposefully and selflessly. It’s really about empowering the human race.

My goal is to help others stand in their power and own their SHAPE, for us SHAPE stands for spirituality, health, abilities, personality and experiences.

So imagine a life where you wake up every morning and love your SHAPE. You also recently took part in Canada Reads, could you tell us a little about that?

Canada Reads was an amazing experience because it really helped me to get over my reading insecurities.

Not that I couldn’t read well, but that this was an opportunity to read books that I wouldn’t necessarily go and pick out at Indigo myself. I was assigned “The Marrow Thieves” and it really had true stories as far as the experiences of indigenous youth. It really meant a lot to me to represent that book and also to be on the show, especially to show myself that I can do something that I would normally fear doing.

Also to represent my neighbourhood because I’m from the Jane and Finch community and at times, it has been in

the news in a negative light, so I loved that I was able to represent a positive aspect of my former community.

What kind of stuff do you enjoy doing in your downtime ?

Health and fitness! Right now I am facilitating and leading a challenge called 100 Strong and Sexy. In my spare time I continue to coach as a personal life coach and spiritual coach. But I also love to cook and hangout. I’ve recently been on my couch binging on How to Get Away With Murder while eating popcorn.

What is the most important lesson you have learned throughout your career?

I am going to quote my mom, “What’s for you can’t miss you.” I’ve been able to apply that to my career especially in hindsight. So no matter what I wanted to do I always had to take a step back and realize that if it’s part of your life path and if it’s for you then nothing will stop it.

You were also named one of the top 25 singers in Canada by CBC, what does that mean to you?

Oh my goodness, I often say I got this gift of song for free so I’m grateful to God for that. It was a huge honour to be in the same class as Joni Mitchell and Celine Dion and other musical giants. It’s humbling and it’s a huge honour.

What are some of the things that you’re looking forward to achieving this year that your fans can look forward to?

Continuing to engage them online and through social media. I’m really open with my fan base so I’m really excited to continue to get to know them. I also have a new single that I’m going to release as well as a brand new radio station on newstalk 1010 called the Blackout on Wednesday nights. I’m excited to build a bridge big enough for everyone to cross. @JullyBlack

REINDEER

Although reindeer (also known as caribou) don’t fly, they are pretty fascinating animals. Here’s why:

North American reindeer are called caribou, but not in Europe. Reindeer is also commonly used to refer to caribou who are domesticated.

Reindeer are the only deer whose antlers grow on both the male and females.

Reindeer are vegetarian so they enjoy things like lichen, leaves and grass. This is also why people leave out carrots on Christmas Eve for them.

Reindeer have special noses that allow them to heat incoming air before it enters their lungs. The build of their noses also enables them to moisten dry air that is entering their system.

They may not be able to fly but they certainly can run fast - up to speeds of 36-48 mph, faster than an Olympic runner.

There are some species of reindeer with knees that click when they walk. This sound allows them to stay together during a blizzard when visibly is poor.

Reindeer eyes can change colour depending on the season.

During the summer their eyes appear to be gold; however during the dark winters their eyes can appear to be blue.

Like their eyes, reindeer hooves also adapt to the season. In the summer they are larger to give them more traction. In the winter they shrink and tighten which enables them to cut into snow and ice.

Reindeer have an amazing sense of smell. This allows them to sniff out food that is buried 60cm in the ground.

Reindeer are extremely social animals and will travel in herds.

These herds can consist of 10 to 100 reindeer but in the spring can reach up to almost 500,000.

Being a First Responder for over eighteen years has certainly given Ottawa native Jeff Simpson a legitimate need for self-expression. A veteran police officer for the city of Ottawa, Simpson rekindled his greatest passion in 2006 to create Studio Twenty Two, where he employs artistic ability and a unique balance of movement, color, texture, and energy to

visually shape his soul on canvas.

Often starting with a completely black background, Simpson’s work features dark colors in combinations (reds, oranges, rust, and coppers or blues, whites, and silvers), sometimes highlighting an impactful or powerful word, leaving the observer with a strong and direct impression.

Artistic expression is perhaps not the first thing that one would generally associate with police work, but throughout the years Simpson has explored many different avenues of art including music and acting (he even toured in a band!), and it seems that painting is the form that really feeds and satisfies his spirit. For over a decade he has been quietly and independent-

causes such as CHEO, Kids Come First (which benefits Ottawa families with children who suffer from Autism), the Governor General’s charity breakfast for The United Way, and most recently The Sens Foundation.

Jeff finally pulled back the curtain two years ago, revealing his hard and passionate work to friends, family, and the community during his very first art show aptly named “The First Look”.

The unique and striking pieces of abstract art were clearly well received, and Jeff continues to create pieces for his portfolio, with commissions available at www.studiotwentytwo.ca.

These art sessions have given rise to a number of commissioned pieces, which further fuels Simpson’s fire because as he tells it, “to see the excitement and ideas from the client, absorb it, then create it, is an amazing experience”.

Although the dark side of human nature that he has experienced as part of his day job comes through in his acrylic abstracts, so too is evident his spiritual belief in the greater good. Stating that “serving the city as a police officer was my goal, and giving even more as an artist is an amazing bonus”, it’s clear that Jeff has always believed in giving back. He doesn’t just say this – he actually puts it into practice and has donated paintings for incredible

STUNTMAN STU Local radio host Stu Schwartz has persevered with incredible strength through the obstacles that life has thrown his way. His battle with leukemia has made him appreciate, now more than ever, the love and support of his family, friends and the whole Ottawa region. Stu has been an inspiration for others who are going through similar circumstances and has also had an organization created in his name to help raise funds with others who are battling.

Stu has been a familiar voice at the Ottawa Senators home games as an announcer. After 12 years of excitement with the Sens Stu has recently decided to step down and focus on his health, family and the radio show. He assured the community and fans that he would still remain involved with the Ottawa Senators organization, as he continues hosting the MAGIC 100 Morning show!

You were one of our first features we ever did back in 2013. Over the last 5 years, a lot has changed in your life – most notably, your battle with leukemia, which thankfully is now in remission. Can you describe how your battle has changed you as a person – what do you appreciate more about life now that perhaps you took for granted a few years ago?

It’s made me appreciate time more than anything now. I hate wasting time on things that in the long run won’t matter. When you come close to death you realize you have to make the most of everyday. You know that bottle of wine you were going to save for a special occasion? Well it’s a Tuesday night so just open and enjoy it.

Tell us the role that your wife and children played in your recovery?

How important was it for you to have their support and the support of the entire National Capital Region?

Without them there’s zero chance I would be answering these questions.

It’s not easy having a spouse or parent go through this. All the attention is focused on you but the family plays a crucial role that often goes unnoticed.

The whole community rallied behind me and I could never say thank you enough!

What is the best thing about being a dad for you?

When they yell from another part of the house “Daddddddy!!”

You recently stepped down from your role as PA announcer at the Senators home games – what was the reason behind that decision and has it been hard for you not to be in your usual spot on game nights this season?

After my recovery the doctors said that if I went back to my old routine, I’d eventually end up in the hospital again. I tried it for a year but just hit a

wall and sat down with my family over the summer and we all agreed that I should retire. I’d still be involved with the club hosting events for the alumni and Sens foundation but not 41 nights per year anymore. It’s extremely hard to walk away, but I can do it knowing I gave it my all and hope the fans appreciated my small part of their experience over 12 years.

Looking back at your time as the PA Announcer, what are some of your favourite moments during your time in that position?

Announcing guys first NHL goals, the Stanley Cup final in my first season, NHL draft, NHL All Star Game, NHL outdoor game, player milestones, game winning goals - there’s been so many to choose from.

What is the best concert you’ve ever seen live? Do you have a top 3 favourite albums/artists?

Paul McCartney a few years ago was unreal. The concert seemed to go on forever! Hit after hit it was unbelievable. As for top 3: Huey Lewis and the News “Live At 25”, it’s a cool album because they recorded it at a small club with a live audience. Metallica Black album, it came out after I graduated high school and I must have listened to that non stop. My third one is Michael Bublé’s Christmas album. I’m a big fan of Bublé and this is a must have around the holidays!

Tell us about how you met your wife Connie, who also works with you at Bell Media – how did you guys meet each other? Was it love at first sight or did you have to work on her a bit to get her to go out with you?

We met at Algonquin College in radio broadcasting and the minute she saw me, she said “I’m gonna marry you!”

She couldn’t stop staring at me. It was quite embarrassing and I eventually agreed to go on a date with her. It’s

Can you tell us a little about Stu’s Pool Party?

The organization that connected me to my bone marrow donor is called Ezer Mizion and it’s based in Israel. My close friend, Josh Zaret from Gemstone developments, told me when I was in hospital that he wanted at some point to do a fundraiser for me. Well fast forward 2 years and within a few months he organized a fun cocktail event on a beautiful night in June that raised $65,000 which will help others like me. It was a laid back event that everyone who attended is still raving about. wonderful having her as my boss and I assume she’s going to read this at some point. And now she’s my boss at MAJIC 100.

Tell us about your first date?

I took her to the mall and then we ended up having lunch in the food court. When I dropped her off I said “do you think this will work?” and she said “definitely”.

Oddly enough the song that was playing on my car radio was Eternal Flame by the Bangles on MAJIC 100.

When you go out – what are a few of your favourite places to eat in the city?

Anywhere free! I don’t like to answer this question because inevitably I’ll get a few texts afterwards from friends with restaurants who are mad I didn’t include them!

However when I go back home to Montreal it’s got to be Joe Beef.

When you retire one day down the road and put your feet up - what do you hope the people of Ottawa think of when they think of Stuntman Stu and your career?

Whatever is said, I’ll be grateful because without the audience, I’m nothing. This city has given me everything I’ve ever wanted and the support we received when I battled cancer was one I’ll never forget.

What was it like for you to come back to radio last fall?

Coming back to MAJIC 100 was incredibly emotional, to be off for 18 months felt like an eternity.

Tell us about your relationship with your co-host Angie Poirier – how long have you known her and what makes you guys work so well together?

Working with Angie on the MAJIC 100 morning show is incredible. She’s honestly the best co-host you could ever ask for.

I’ve been fortunate to work with so many talented broadcasters but Angie and I just click. She’s the only woman, next to my wife, that will put up with my crap and knows me better than anyone. We can just look at each other and know what the other one is going to say. It might have something to do with sharing the same

What would you say to someone that wants to follow your footsteps and get into broadcasting… is there something that you would tell your 16 year old self, if you could go back in time and give advice to yourself as a teenager based on what you’ve learned over the years?

I would tell myself to ask everyone you meet how they got to where they are, to ask a lot of questions and then I would tell myself to invest in Apple stock. As for the newbies entering this business, it’s changing constantly, be ready to learn something new everyday and no task is beneath you. Take initiative and enjoy the ride.

If someone was considering a move to Ottawa – and they called you up and asked you what it is like living in this city – what would you tell them?

I would say don’t let size fool you! There’s beautiful scenery, museums, amazing restaurants and the city is continuing to grow. Also make sure you have a Beavertail and a Golden Palace egg roll! Plus don’t forget to tune into MAJIC 100 when you’re here! (laughs) FACES MAGAZINE | 69

His dedication is truly inspirational as he continues to make moves in his career while also being in school.

id you grow up in Ottawa?

I grew up in Ottawa. I live in the Orleans area and have lived here my whole life. Ottawa will always be home to me.

Tell us about how you got started in music? When did you know that you wanted to be an artist?

T

hough Diamond feels blessed to have achieved so much, he has made it clear that his journey is nowhere close to being over.

He has been a true inspiration to all of his fans, the Diamond Nation, and continues to be grateful for their support. He wants to continue to make music and inspire people to follow their dreams, just as he has done

I started making music when I was 13 years old. I have an older brother that raps as well and when I was 13, he set up a mini microphone in our basement where he would record his music. I always had a true passion for hip-hop, but back then I never knew just anybody could record music. I used to think that you had to be a professional musician or celebrity to make music. Once I saw my brother recording demos and releasing songs it gave me the courage to try as well. As soon as I started rapping I knew this was what I wanted to do with my life. I knew I found my TRUE passion and I knew I wanted to be an artist. Any song I used to record I believed it was amazing - even though it probably wasn’t the best at that time. To be real with you, I think in order to be successful in music it’s important to have undying confidence in yourself. Even at the beginning stages when your music isn’t great yet. That confidence I had when I was 13, definitely took me to where I am today.

WHAT IS DIAMOND NATION?

Growing up, who were some of your favourite artists?

Growing up I didn’t listen to a large number of artists but there were 3 artists in particular, that I listened to often. Eminem, Lecrae, and J.Cole. They stood out to me so much because every time I listened to their music, it felt like I was watching a movie. I really admired the way they would tell stories in their music and how they always stayed true to themselves.

How did you make the transition from wanting to make music, to making music?

The transition from wanting to make music to actually making music came naturally for me. I’m the type of person that as soon as I want something in life, I won’t hesitate to achieve it. I’ve always been like that since I was young. I feel like once you think about things too much, doubt starts to creep in.

Overthinking and doubt ultimately leads to less productivity. If I genuinely want to do something and have a true passion for it, I will find a way to do it and I’ll act upon on it as quickly as possible.

Diamond Nation is a brand that I created that represents my fan base and what I stand for and believe in. I always hesitate to call it a “brand” because at this point Diamond Nation is more of a family.

I always interact and talk to my fans every single day. I get so many messages every day from people all around the world and I always try to reply to as many of them as possible. I believe you can never be too big, or famous, to take the time to reply to the people that basically made you who you are. Diamond Nation represents anybody with dreams and goals. I’m here to show people that achieving your is dreams is possible. I can’t stress that enough. I hope my music can motivate people to pursue what they love in life and not dictate their decisions based on the opinions of others.

The real power is within you. I’m literally doing all of this while still being in school.

I don’t have any industry connections helping me out like 95% of big artists. Don’t get me wrong I haven’t even come close to achieving my end goal, but I’m in the process of making that happen. I feel like at this point if you support Diamond Nation you’re not just a fan of my music, but you’re a fan of me as a person. Sidenote: For those who have been asking, merch is on the way!

ell us about your latest single?

My latest single is called “Do It Now,” and it’s one of my favourite songs I’ve released thus far. It’s about treating life with a sense of urgency and encouraging more people to chase after their dreams and pushing people to do what truly makes them happy. I know people often say “Ah, I have time I can always do it later.” But in the song, I’m literally saying “NO! Tomorrow isn’t promised.” Your whole life can change in one night so go after your dreams now!

You recently hit 1 million streams on spotify. Tell us how it feels and what it means to you to have hit that milestone.

It feels amazing. It’s almost unbelievable but believable at the same

time you know what I mean? It’s crazy because a year ago I took a screenshot of my Spotify artist page and it said I only had 94 monthly listeners in total.

That means only 94 people had heard of my music at the time. To go from 94 streams to having one million total streams is crazy for me. I also know how the music industry works and I know that the majority of these artists all have huge companies behind them. I just make music in my house or in my room.

The fact that I hit 1 million total streams as an independent artist without a record label is amazing to me. That’s just a testament to confidence, persistence, my faith in Jesus and the support of Diamond Nation. I owe it all to them because I’m not even famous at all yet and they still listen to me regularly. That really means a lot me. We still have a long way to go and I have a lot of new music on the way. My best music is yet to come and I can’t wait to release it.

What advice do you have for anyone trying to get into the music industry?

My advice for anyone trying to get in the music industry is to be persistent and have confidence in yourself. I’ve been making music since I was 13 and I’m just now starting to make a name for myself. I’m 18 now which means I made music for 6 years and got no results. Most people would give up after the first year or maybe even sooner. That’s why I think persistence is the most important thing for any artist to have.

Where do you get inspiration from? What makes you different than other artists?

Inspiration has come in a lot of different ways for me. I think every day something in my life happens that inspires me. I think it’s easy for someone to be inspired by something but I think the hardest part is staying inspired.

When you’re feeling uninspired, you have to find ways to motivate yourself. You can’t wait on other people to motivate you. I think the difference between other artists and myself, is that I actually take the time to interact with my fans. If you look at my Instagram page right now you would see that I try to reply to every comment. I don’t believe that I’m “too big” to do anything and I take pride in treating everybody equally. I do this because I truly appreciate everyone that supports me as a person along with my music. Two years ago I barely even had any music out. I know how it feels for no one to know or care about you and I don’t forget that feeling.

That’s why I’m genuinely grateful for anybody that supports me and the Diamond Nation movement.

Comment on the hip hop/music scene in Ottawa?

I think the Hip-Hop scene in Ottawa is dope right now. There are a lot of really talented artists from the city making big moves. I love seeing people pursue their dreams instead of conforming to the system that society has placed us in. There’s not a huge push for the entertainment industry here in Ottawa, so I commend the ones who are brave enough to follow their dreams and do what they truly love. I support everybody doing their thing here in Ottawa, it’s great to see.

What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your music career?

I think one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced in my music career so far is trying to balance my social life with my music. People don’t understand how much sacrifice, hard work, and dedication it takes to make music. Especially being an independent artist and having to do things myself. I had to sacrifice a lot of things but lately I think I’ve been getting better at balancing the two. I think over time I’ll continue to get better at it.

What’s one of your songs that your most proud of to date and why is it so meaningful to you?

The song that I’m most proud of is a song that I’m going to release in about 2 weeks. The song is called “Hold On.” It’s easily my most personal song yet and I can’t wait for people to hear it. I don’t want to give too much away, but I really got a lot of things off my chest. I’ve been going through a lot of issues lately and I let it all out in the song. This song will be on the album as well and I honestly can’t wait for people to hear it.

What are some goals for your career?

I try to avoid that question as often as I can. I believe living in the moment and taking things one step at a time. I also think that setting goals can be a good thing just as long as it keeps me focused on my present situation. In 5 years I hope to be one of the biggest artists in the world while inspiring kids to chase after their dreams. I have a lot of other things I want to accomplish but simply put, that’s the dream.

What’s next for you? Any works-in-progress that you’re focusing on at the moment?

Album on the way! I’ve been working on this album since August and I’m really looking forward to dropping it. It’s easily the best music I’ve made so far. Haven’t made the announcement yet but it’s definitely dropping early 2019!

It’s going to be insane.

You wanted the best of the best, so you got the glossiest card stock you could find. That’s a mistake. Cards that are too glossy can’t be written on, and are hard to read when turned towards the light. Matte business cards still communicate quality, but avoid these common problems.

using colour to 3 attract attention If you’re using bright or contrasting colours so that your card will leap out from all of the rest, you’re making a huge mistake. Colour is a tool that should be used for branding, not for attention. If you try to attain the latter, you will most definitely be sacrificing design and not allowing the colours of your card to drive home your message.

One of the biggest mistakes someone can make when creating a business card is leaving the other side blank (and putting a graphic on this side doesn’t count). First and foremost, it looks and feels cheap. But most of all, it wastes valuable space where you could be leaving an important message. Dedicate one side to explaining who you are, your logo and brand message, and the other side to what you do and your contact information.

Trying to make an impact by having only a logo or a few descriptive words and your contact info may look trendy, but consider that most people who take your business card may look at it weeks or even months after your initial conversation. It’s important to have as much information about your unique offering, your position or your strategy as possible. If someone is looking for your card, a logo or statement is not going to help them remember your conversation, your pitch, or what makes you different.

Looking to entertain this season? You might think that a charcuterie board is something you’d find only in a restaurant on Sussex or Preston, but it can also be a holiday party game-changer. Don’t let the name scare you - charcuterie is just a French word referring to any type of cured meat. In this case, meat that is paired with cheese, pickles, crackers and chutneys. Here, we deconstruct the charcuterie board made famous by all those who know how to pronounce it correctly.

Sliced or Shredded You should select a good variety of cured meats for your board. Meats fall under one of two categories: sliced or shredded. Sliced meats are those like salami and prosciutto that are (you guessed it) sliced thinly and placed on the board.

Shredded meats are served as mousse, pate or rillettes. While both types of meat have to be cooked, they are both typically served cold when it comes to charcuterie.

THE 3 LAYERS TO PERFECT CHARCUTERIE Baguettes & Crackers Bread always accompanies meat on a charcuterie board. You can go with crackers, but a popular option is to keep things simple with slices of baguettes, lightly toasted with olive oil drizzled on top.

You want to create contrast with your meats and garnishes. Try mixing sweet with acidic. Add nuts for a dry crunch to go with your jams and pickled onion. Include some cheese to counter the spice of your mustard. There really is no limit to the creativity and combinations that can co-exist on a charcuterie board, but it needs to make sense to people’s taste buds.

RECREATIONAL CANNABIS HAS ARRIVED WHAT RESIDENTIAL LANDLORDS NEED TO KNOW NOW THAT THE USE OF MARIJUANA IS LEGAL IN CANADA, RESIDENTIAL LANDLORDS SHOULD BE THINKING ABOUT HOW THIS WILL AFFECT THEIR RENTAL PROPERTIES.

SMOKING MARIJUANA Currently, the Residential Tenancies Act (the “Act”) does not include provisions about smoking substances of any kind in a rental unit. The Smoke-Free Ontario Act, 1994 does, however, ban smoking in common areas, in apartment buildings or condominiums. This includes elevators, stairwells, hallways, parking garages, laundry facilities, lobbies, exercise areas and party or entertainment rooms.

Additionally, landlords do have the right to ban tobacco smoking if it is stipulated in their lease and the tenant signs same.

According to the Ontario Government, the same rules will likely apply to marijuana; therefore, post-legalization, landlords should be able to prohibit smoking marijuana in rental units, provided that wording is in their lease. Presently, Ontario’s tenancy laws prohibit changing a lease during a tenancy, landlords who have not already prohibited smoking in a lease, will have to wait for a new tenant to include that provision in the lease, or discuss possible alternatives with a lawyer.

One exception to the smoking prohibition in a lease may be for a tenant who relies on the Ontario Human Rights Code (“the Code”) to justify a breach. This requires that the tenant be able to claim that he or she uses marijuana for medicinal purposes. Even in these circumstances and for these tenants, comprises may be made, for example, it may be an option that marijuana could be consumed orally.

GROWING MARIJUANA Currently, the Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations apply to permit limited cannabis growing by an authorized person (i.e. one with a prescription). However, the right to grow is not absolute, nor is it likely to be so in the future.

Under current regulations, an eligible grower must comply with applicable provincial and municipal laws relative to health and safety, including but not limited to applicable building, fire and electrical codes. Post-legalization, it is expected similar rules will apply, but it is unlikely that those rules will operate without regard to the legal interests of rental property owners and other occupants of rented residential premises.

In Ontario, a landlord may prohibit cannabis growing in apartment units in a lease, subject to the requirements of the Code. The fact that an individual holds a prescription for medical cannabis does not mean that they are entitled to grow plants in their rental unit, particularly if they have agreed in their lease not to do so. If the person cultivates cannabis and relies on the Code and existing regulations as grounds to violate the lease, a landlord can challenge the position by invoking regulatory policies applicable to

the accommodation of individuals with disabilities. For example, people who hold prescriptions can purchase the product, grow plants off site, have someone else grow plants on their behalf, or grow them in a designated area.

A person’s interest in growing cannabis must be balanced with the interest of the landlord to ensure that the health and safety of other residents and the physical integrity of the property are not put at risk by the activity of cannabis growth in a rental unit. Excess humidity (mold), excessive electricity consumption (if hydro is “included in the rent”), and alterations to the electrical system (increasing the risk of fire) are legitimate concerns for landlords and other tenants. In addition, there are security issues if cannabis production in a unit is known to third parties and finally, insurers may refuse to provide coverage for “grow-ops,” regardless of their size.

The legalization of recreational marijuana raises a number of questions and issues for landlords and it will be interesting to see how things play out over the upcoming months.

Curling is a sometimes-misunderstood sport. Many don’t appreciate the mental and physical strength and endurance required to be the best. The rock weighs up to 44lbs and maneuvering it requires the skills of a chess grandmaster to outthink and outwit your opponent.

Nobody knows these demands better than Ottawa’s Rachel Homan. She meets and exceeds the toughest expectations that the sport and its devoted fans throw at her. In a word, Rachel is an uncompromising champion that exemplifies everything great about curling.

The game itself can last anywhere from two to three hours, so a curler needs extreme patience matched with persistence. If the mental and physical aren’t enough, tack on the pressure of your city, province or country counting on your success.

A 3-time national champion and Team Canada Skip, Rachel’s best career year is 2017 to 2018. Her team became the first to go through the World’s Women’s Curling Championships undefeated. Team Homan also represented Canada in the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. But the best is still to come for Homan.

Faces caught up with Rachel to talk about Team Homan, her life and her focus for 2019.

“NONE OF US ARE AS GOOD AS ALL OF US.

“ Just last month you won the first leg of the Curling World Cup in China.

Take us through that win.

It was the first event of the season for us and most teams there. Anytime you get to wear the maple leaf it’s an honour so we wanted to perform well. We got in a lot of practice on the ice and worked hard all summer to be back in top condition for a tough opening event. The last few years we’ve started our season with smaller events so it was different to begin the season with that added pressure. We’re looking forward to getting back to China though for the Grand Final in Beijing at the end of the season.

The first leg took place in Suzhou, China. What was it like playing there?

It was great to be back in China where we’d won the 2017 World Championship, and the event was a first rate international tournament.

The facility was fantastic plus the fans and people there are so welcoming. We were fortunate enough to spend some time with our sponsor, Canadian Beef, and Canada’s men’s team putting on a fun East Meets West beef cooking event as well. That helped us relax and get used to the time difference.

Many things have changed since we last spoke to you. One of them being that you recently got a new coach, Marcel Rocque. Was the decision difficult?

We’re really happy to bring Marcel back to our team. He had worked with us a couple of years ago during the tour part of our season and it worked really well. He’s exactly what we need in a coach right now.

He knows the game inside and out from technical, strategy and what it takes to win. He’s had unbelievable success as a player and as a coach - having worked with international teams in the past.

How has working with him been different than Adam Kingsbury?

We learned a lot from Adam as our coach. We captured a Scotties, World Championship and Olympic Trials, with him on our coach’s bench. His speciality was the mental side of the game and he helped us greatly with that. With a coaching change in any sport it’s valuable if at the end of the experience you’ve learned from them and can carry that knowledge with you, and we can definitely say that about Adam.

Your team is spread out around Canada (you are based in Alberta) and your team is based in Ottawa and Edmonton. When you’re at home, do you stay connected or enjoy the time apart?

I’m actually studying at the University of Alberta, so I get home to Ottawa quite often and do training there when we can.

It’s tough to balance a very full course load in Edmonton with a full curling calendar, especially in the fall but we all make it work. We spend most weekends together in hotels, curling clubs or arenas around the country. During the week we will practice on our own but stay connected to our plan for the season.

Right now you’re away for school in Edmonton, but when you’re here, what are some of your favourite places to go to eat?

When I’m home in Ottawa I love spending time with family, friends and enjoy going out for dinner. I love El Camino or anywhere that we can catch up - even if it’s casually over food at a Sens game.

Let’s talk about Pyeongchang 2018. How much did it mean to you to be able to have your parents there for your Olympic journey?

It was incredible to have my parents there. We were very fortunate to have so much support. A lot of supporters and local businesses, including FACES, helped ensure our parents were able to make it to Korea. Curling, unlike most other sports, lasts nearly the entire Olympic games and we played at least one game a day so it’s a huge commitment in terms of time and cost. To be able to hear from them and see them throughout the competition was a huge morale boost for us.

How different was the atmosphere at Pyeongchang to other tournaments you’ve competed in?

The curling and atmosphere in the arena was really the same because we’ve played those teams pretty often. The difference was the atmosphere within the Olympic Village, around the Olympic Park, it had a whole larger team feel to it. It was a really special experience but certainly something we hadn’t come by before.

What was your favourite memory from Pyeongchang?

During the opening ceremonies we walked out together as a team within this larger Team Canada and it was amazing. We opted not to use our phones or cameras and just let the moment soak in while we did the lap with Team Canada. It was something we’ll never forget.

You didn’t place exactly where you wanted to, but overall, how do you felt your team came together under pressure?

We didn’t achieve what we wanted to in Pyeongchang. We came up short of our goal but there isn’t much we’d change in terms of preparation. We know we can perform well under pressure and we enjoy those situations. In the end we’re proud of our achievement of getting there and how hard we fought after some tough losses.

What is one lesson from that experience you’ll never forget?

Learn from every experience. You can’t go back in time and dwell on it either but you can go forward with what you’ve learned and that’s exactly what we’re out to do this season. Resilience is key in any sport but we’ve continued to show that as a team.

There is much discussion in the curling world surrounding the next Scotties.

Because you were away for the Olym-

pics, Jennifer Jones and her team may also have a spot at the tournament this year. What are your thoughts, should there be two team Canada’s?

Curling Canada has recently reviewed the situation and they came up with an amendment to the Wild Card entry. It hadn’t been something we’d thought about much or discussed. Our focus had always been and will continue to be on the Ontario playdowns. We had always known that was how we’d have to get back to the Scotties so this doesn’t change much for us. In the end we hope the best teams are always at the Scotties but to get there you have to get through a lot of great teams within each province.

What would you say is the biggest challenge you face today as an athlete?

Personally it’s probably the balance between my studies, curling and the travel. We are on the road almost every weekend criss-crossing a huge country against the best teams in the world, and then on Monday I’m back to studying and practicing.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Our former coach, Earle Morris, would always say ‘none of us are as good as all of us’. In a team sport like curling it’s so critical that you lean on your teammates, coaches and support staff to become better and help each other out. It applies in all areas of life too.

What would you tell anyone who aspires to follow in your footsteps?

Success will come if you put in the practice and persistence. Team sports can sometimes be hard to find the right mix of players. If you surround yourself with people you care about, then you’ll lift each other up when the results aren’t going the way you want them.

After such a big year, and now a big win under your belt heading into the last few months of 2018, what are you and your team focusing on until the end of the year?

We have a few more Grand Slams and the Canada Cup coming up before the Christmas break. We also have some training weekends planned in Ottawa and Edmonton to ensure we’re prepared at our peak for Scotties playdowns and the back half of the season.

What are your major goals for 2019?

We really want to get back to the Scotties and we’d love to add a few more medals and trophies. We already know we’ll be at the Continental Cup in Las Vegas early in 2019, and then back at the Curling World Cup in China so we’re hoping to represent Canada well in those. @rhoman89

A RICH HISTORY Cabotto’s Italian Restaurant in Kanata has been open since 1976, but the building itself has a much longer history, which is part of the reason why Cabotto’s is one of the most unique dining experiences in Ottawa.

f you’ve ever driven down Hazeldean in the west end, you will notice two stone farm houses standing amongst the box stores, offices and new developments.

It looks as if the city has built itself around them, and indeed it has. One of those stone farmhouses is Cabotto’s Italian restaurant, a family run establishment that serves upscale Italian cuisine and has occupied the building since 2003.

Inside and out, the restaurant preserves the heritage of the old building for all to enjoy and has become a distinctive landmark with its steeped gabled roof and gingerbread trim

which are characteristic of its Gothic Revival style. While it sits on a smaller lot today, the orginal property was much larger and owned in two parts. A small log house stood on the property and became a tavern in 1840.The stone house wasn’t built until 1868.

It was made with stone from local quarries, lumber from local sawmills and the doors and windows were all handmade.

For the next century, the house would switch from being a tavern, to serving and contracting with the workers on the Central Canada Railway, as its introduction greatly diminished road traffic to the tavern. After the railway

was completed, the house became a functioning farm and in 1919, owned

by James Bradley, was one of the farms shipping whole milk to Ottawa. In 1926, the house got hydro power.

In 1979, John McCuaig bought and restored the house and opened it as Cafe Luigi’s Restaurant. He preserved the asthetic of the house and kept a lot of the timely pieces like the small green sign, the bannister leading up the stairwell and the windows and doors. It operated as Luigi’s until 2003 when the Pucci family bought the house and moved their established Cabotto’s Restaurant from Kanata.

Today, Vince and his son Perry Pucci still run Cabotto’s and have recently redone the inside to give it a fresh look while keeping the Gothic Revival feel.

One of the oldest buildings still in use in the West End, Cabotto’s offers a unique dining experience because of the rich history of the house that is so apparent in its asthetic. Coupled with great italian cuisine, Cabotto’s is one of Ottawa’s best date night spots and is truly one of our local treasures.
