EDM Music Sensation Comes to the Capital
Martin Garrix Martin Garrix took the EDM scene by storm with his mega successful song, “Animals”, when he was only 17 years old. Garrix has since gone on to become the #3 ranked DJ on DJ Mag and has started his own record label, “STMPD RCRDS”. Collaborating with some major artists such as Tiësto and Usher, Garrix is making his dreams come true creating music you just have to get up and dance to.
Garrix’s love for music is evident in the way he speaks. Never making music in order to become famous, Garrix’s passion came after witnessing another’s performance. Despite his mega success, Garrix has managed to stay incredibly grounded, which he attributes to his family and friends. Instead of losing himself in fame, he has managed to grow as a person while remaining himself at heart. Performing at Escapade in our city on June 26th, Garrix is sure to have the entire city on their feet. FACES had the opportunity to catch up with Garrix to talk about how his love for EDM began, and his explosive career. At only 19 years old, Garrix has an entire lifetime ahead of him, and we can’t wait to see what he produces next.

Tell us about growing up in Amstelveen, Netherlands, and how your passion for music came to be. I grew up in a musical family, so music was all around me. I used to play the guitar, and later on I switched to electronic music. I started listening to trance and then slowly moved to all kinds of electronic music. How vital do think studying at Herman Brood Academy was to your development and success as an artist? Herman Brood Academy is a great school. I learned so many new things there and also got to know a lot of other musicians; it is a very inspiring environment to be in. Who, or what, inspired you to want to become a DJ? Before I saw Tiësto playing at the Olympics opening ceremony in 2004 on television I had never been interested in electronic music. After witnessing his performance, I was hooked! If I hadn’t seen him perform at the Olympics, it might have been a bit longer before I would’ve discovered dance music, and I would probably be doing something completely different with my life right now! What would you say is your greatest accomplishment to date? I have had so many great moments in my career so far! Recently I would say closing the Ultra Mainstage on opening night, launching my own label, STMPD RCRDS, and the premiere of the MTV documentary, “The Ride” were some really big highlights for me. You have collaborated with a long list of musicians and DJ’s thus far in your career. Who was your favorite artist to work with and why? All of the artists that I collaborate with inspire me in a certain way; it’s amazing to create something together. Working with Tiësto, my biggest inspiration, was great, and the collaboration with Usher was also a big milestone. Who is someone that you would like to collaborate with in the future? I have always loved Lana del Rey’s voice and would love to collaborate with her! I also saw The Weeknd and Drake at Coachella last year and really enjoyed their shows. I would love to hit the studio with them as well! Who are some of your favorite artists outside of the EDM scope? Lana Del Rey, Ed Sheeran, Pharrell, The Weeknd and lots of other artists! When you’re not producing albums or performing in front of thousands of people, what do enjoy doing in your free time? I mostly just hang out with friends and family, listen to music, or catch up on some sleep!
“I want to deliver and give it my all for every performance.”
COVER STORY
Martin Garrix What is one thing your fans might not know about you? That I used to breakdance. Where did the idea to name your record label, “STMPD RCRDS”, originate from? The letters stand for Stamped Records. My dad owns a stamp auctioning company so I wanted to use the word ‘stamps’. We left out the vowels since it looks cooler and makes people guess about the actual name. Did you ever imagine your smash hit, “Animals”, being as popular and successful as it is? Absolutely not! I was just enjoying making music and it was never with the intention to create such a big hit. When the song was teased without my name attached to it, it started blowing up. People started guessing who produced the song and after a while I could finally say that I did. It was crazy! Your tour schedule has you set to play 12 international shows alone in the month of July. How are you able to bring the same energy to the stage night in and night out? Touring can be pretty tiring but the music and the energy of the crowd always pumps me up. I want to deliver and give it my all for every performance. What is one thing you have learned about yourself since breaking onto the music scene in 2012? I think the most important thing is to stay close to your friends and family. They keep me grounded. I’m still the same guy I used to be, only my lifestyle just completely changed. If you could send a message to today’s youth aspiring to be musicians or DJ’s, what would it be? Don’t make music because you want to become famous, but do it because you love it. If you work hard, improve yourself, and most of all enjoy it, the right people will eventually notice you! You’re performing here in the Nations Capital at the Escapade Music Festival on June 26th. What do you like most about performing in Canada? Canada is a beautiful country and I love going there. I’m really looking forward to hit the festival there and have a great time! You are starting a residency in Ibiza in July; what are you most looking forward to with this? I can’t wait to be back on the island to see my Ushuaïa family! That place feels like a second home to me. Twitter: @MartinGarrix

UFC Champion Hits the Capital
Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC/UFC/Getty Images
The UFC has finally arrived in Ottawa. Well, almost. June 18, 2016 will mark the first UFC event in Canada’s capital and it already has Ottawa buzzing. How can you blame us? The UFC brings with it excitement, energy and the ultimate in one-on-one combat between exceptional athletic individuals. It also doesn’t hurt that Canadian great, Rory MacDonald, will be headlining the highly anticipated main event against American, Stephen Thompson. With all due respect to Thompson, MacDonald will have the support of a nation behind him when the bell rings at TD Place.
10 | June 2016
You’d think a sport as intense and even brutal as UFC would yield fighters who are equally intense and perhaps even boorish, but you’d be dead wrong. Speaking with Rory MacDonald you are struck by how calm, collected, soft-spoken and laid back he is in person. MacDonald loves his job and has a respect and passion for martial arts that make you appreciate the beauty of MMA. MacDonald has learned his craft and become a master, but trains tirelessly to hone his skills. MacDonald is a painter whose medians are his fists, elbows, knees, legs and grappling techniques. His canvas is the UFC octagon. His finished product, win or lose, is usually a beautifully displayed masterpiece that leaves us wanting more from a Canadian master. FACES had the great pleasure of meeting with Rory MacDonald before his fight at TD Place on June 18th to learn about his life, training and thoughts on his upcoming fight in Ottawa.
Photo by Christian Petersen/Zuffa LLC/UFC/Getty Images Why did you get involved with MMA? I’d always liked combat sports, combat training and martial arts when I was growing up. My father showed me a lot of martial arts, and some of the early UFC fights and martial arts movies from the ‘90s. My interest was there, and when I found an MMA gym in my town, it steamrolled from there. I instantly fell in love with the training, wanted to do competitions, and eventually went on to compete professionally. It is brutal, but there is a beauty to it. There is a finesse required in this art that needs to be practiced. This isn’t barbarian stuff out there. These are trained martial artists who have dedicated their entire lives to learning the techniques, studying new things and practicing day-in-day-out. When you were younger, which martial artists and/or MMA fighters did you look up to? There were a lot of great guys. Early on I liked Vitor Belfor, Wanderlei Silva and then Georges St. Pierre came along, and it was great to see a Canadian. Then a lot of other Canadians came along that I looked up to like Denis Kang, David Loiseau, and others. There are a lot of guys I watched and studied and I think I envied them and the position they were in. I was working towards getting there, though. Being in the headline match in Canada’s capital has got to be something special. It’s really nice. I’ve been the headline before in Halifax and I thought it was great. I really enjoy being a headliner and I think that’s when I perform the best – when I am the main attraction, the pressure is on and the lights are on me – it’s extra motivation, which I like.
When did you realize you wanted to become a professional fighter? It was kind of my first day of training, actually. At that point in my life, I guess I was searching for something. My first martial arts class was a defining moment for me. I just knew that I had found something that was right for me. What does an average day of training look like for you? It depends what time of year it is. Right now, I’m not really in training camp so it’s just once a day of whatever I feel like – be it boxing, kickboxing, jiu-jitsu, fitness, etc. Do you prefer training more stand up, or grappling training? I like both. My interest fluctuates all the time so it depends on how I am feeling. Do you ever do gi training? None. I think I’ve worn a gi less than ten times. What’s the biggest obstacle you had to overcome to get to where you are today? I feel like I’ve had a pretty easy road. I stayed generally focused on my career and my goals, even as a kid. But I guess the difficult parts were fighting through not making any money, training consistently, staying passionate about it, etc. But that’s the story for 99% of MMA fighters. Fighting for no money, training broke, fighting broke and doing it over and over again until you catch a break.
“I just knew that I had found something that was right for me.” 11 | June 2016
FEATURES Do you have any pre-fight rituals? Goto meals or a sequence you go through before every fight? It gets pretty structured every time – media, cut weight, weigh-in, rehydrate, fight. There’s no superstitions or anything like that because it’s simply following the same regiment and structure to get to the fight. Your fight with Lawler was simply amazing and rightfully considered one of the best in UFC history. Would you have fought Lawler any different knowing you were up 3-1? I was running on fumes in that rough. I was basically just trying to survive at that point so there was no real game plan. That is to say, at that point the game plan had gone out the window. It ultimately became about survival and I didn’t survive (laughs). Does your training change after a fight like the one with Lawler? Do you do less sparring or mix up anything else? Yes. Definitely. I cooled down the sparring a bit. I’ve done so much sparring over the last 10-12 years that I really feel that I’ve got that composure and timing down; where some of the younger guys might still need to get the timing down with sparring.

What do you think about the current state of MMA in Canada? What about it’s future and potential future champions? Martial arts and fighting will never be like a team sport where you can have a farm team or developmental program. I just don’t see any structure that would work like that, in terms of comparing it to a team sport. There are amateur programs where gyms build up young fighters that come in step-by-step. But that’s just been the same for generations in all martial arts. The process is usually building up the fighter, maybe doing weekend competitions, then amateur and then who knows? There’s definitely a lot of bright talent in Canada, and for sure in Tri-Star. How do you plan on dealing with Thompson’s elusive hit and run style of striking? Do you try to match his tactics or stick to your game plan? He’s got a great karate-style, which is very unique for MMA. He’ll be the first true karate guy I’ve competed against. That’s going to be dangerous for me, to have to get through the obstacle of facing a style I haven’t faced before, but I’m looking forward to that challenge. I’m definitely not going to try and match his style – I think that would be a fatal mistake. I think what I could do is neutralize some of his strengths with certain techniques.
Winning this fight would mean a lot, even financially. I’ve got a contract negotiation so this is certainly a big opportunity for a title and big fights. This is a major fight. It’s a possible title contender; a possible life-changing contract for me so there’s a lot of on the line. What advice would you give to amateur fighters hoping to reach the UFC? Dedication. Real dedication. You need to devote your life to MMA. That’s the main thing that many fighters have trouble accepting. You have to skip the weekend party, forget about what happens after training and instead just concentrate on the martial arts. When you really and truly dedicate yourself to martial arts you will go far.
“Dedication. Real dedication. You need to devote your life to MMA.”
Photo by Derek Leung/UFC/Getty Images On Joe Rogan’s podcast you said that your dream was to live in the middle of nowhere B.C., have a little place to train and live a simple life. Has any of that changed now that you’re set to become a father? Yeah. There’s a balance. It would be nice to have a getaway place, but one day I’d like to setup a life somewhere more quiet than a major city. I just enjoy the lifestyle of being outside a major city. For me, it’s a better life. Have you ever been to Ottawa before? Any favourite spots or places to go? I’ve been here a handful of times, but it’s always very quick trips. Most of the time I am in and out in a day, so I haven’t really had a chance to see too much. What are you expecting out of the fans in Ottawa? It’s always nice fighting in Canada. I’ve never fought in Ottawa before and that’s always nice too. I’m really looking forward to fighting in Ottawa and being the main event. I expect the fans to be pretty crazy. Every time that I have fought somewhere in Canada for the first time has resulted in a crazy reaction. If you could fight anyone in MMA, living or dead, who would want to fight? There’s so many. Royce Gracie would have been a pretty epic thing back in UFC 1. Would ever consider fighting up or down in weight class? Yes. I plan on fighting middleweight in the next contract I sign. Growing up in a family of 11 siblings, Kadeisha Buchanan is no stranger to sport and physicality, playing hard with her brothers and sisters growing up. Buchanan made her Team Canada debut when she was only 17 years old, becoming one of the youngest players on the team. She was the Canadian Under-20 Player of the Year for 2013 and 2014 and won the women’s Canadian Player of the Year Award in 2015. Playing alongside Canadian female soccer star, Christine Sinclair, Buchanan is on top of the world, and at only 20 years old, she is a force to be reckoned with on the soccer field. Buchanan knows how to work hard and play hard and it is obvious watching her play that she will be around for many more years. FACES had the fortunate opportunity to catch up with Buchanan between practice to talk about her role models and time thus far on the international soccer stage.
Canadian Soccer Star Phenom
Kadeisha Buchanan Who was your role model growing up? Christine Sinclair was one of my role models growing up. I was a striker like her when I was watching her play, and I just loved the way she really put Canada on her back and led by example. It’s really cool because I feel like we have some similar features, the way we play. My mom was also one of my role models in my life, just a strong independent woman who set an example of who I want to be when I’m older.
14 | June 2016
You played some soccer in Ottawa during your career. What did you like about the city and how did you find the interest in soccer here compared to other cities in Canada? I think Ottawa is beautiful. The coaching staff and the players during my time there were great. I wasn’t there for very long for soccer but I really enjoyed my time with the Fury. There is a large population of passionate soccer fans there, which is nice to see.
What is your greatest accomplishment thus far in your career? I think receiving the Hyundai Award right after the USA vs Japan match for Best Defensive Player of the tournament was one of my greatest accomplishments so far in my career. Another accomplishment I am very proud of is my Olympic medal!
“I just want to a be good role model for Canadians.”
Photo by Canada Soccer Who is one coach, or player, that has had the biggest impact on your career? I think for me it’s really had to pick out just one coach or player. Growing up I had a lot of help from different types of coaches. There are so many people out there that have helped me throughout my journey.
What does it mean to you to represent your country in international competition? For me it’s a huge honour. Not many people get to represent their country and wear their national crest on their jersey. I just want to be a good role model for Canadians. It’s a huge honour to represent Canada, to play for your country, to play for your teammates, and to play for your family.
What is it like being able to play and learn from not only one of soccer’s all time legends, but also one of your role models, Christine Sinclair? It was a dream come true because I always dreamed about playing on Team Canada. It’s a huge honor and now she’s one of the best strikers in the world. So being able to train and play against her every day truly had a big impact on my game!

“I think for me, I live for those moments.” Which team do you most look forward to playing against in international competition and why? Well there are a few; the USA is obviously a big one because of the country rivalry. Personally I haven’t beaten Germany or France so I think those are always tough ones for me. Tell us about the rivalry between Team Canada and the United States. They are one of the best in the world so its always tough competition; they always have pretty great teams. They are like your big brother, you always want to beat your big brother - and I think that day is coming. What University are you currently enrolled in and what are you studying? I am currently at West Virginia University and I am studying Criminology. If you could play with any soccer player in the world, who would it be and why? It will always be Ronaldinho; I’ve always been a huge fan of his. I thought it was so cool that he

was picking out the balls for the Olympic draw. Ronaldinho has always been one of my all time favourite soccer players. How many siblings do you have and how did they help shape you into the person and athlete you are today? I have 6 sisters and 5 brothers and I am youngest of them all. My brothers have definitely helped to shape my physicality. They pushed me because they are older than me and they were faster and stronger. I think I get my competitiveness from being around my family because we were always trying to compete against each other and always trying to win. They taught me that toughness and competitiveness. Most 17 years olds would be pretty nervous playing in front of thousands of people, night in night out. How do you handle the pressure of representing your country in front of huge crowds? I think for me, I live for those moments. I always dreamed about these moments and I honestly thought I would get nervous leading up
to my first World Cup. As soon as I got into the first game I was so pumped because I knew I put in the hard work and the hours to prepare for these moments. I think that my preparation helps me with my calmness and my confidence during the game. Do you have any pregame rituals? Just small things like showering before a match, some of us pray before matches and I dance, listen to music and get ready for the match. What is your pregame meal of choice before a big match? The new thing is pancakes. Stack up on the carbs! What is one thing your fans might not know about you? I like to play video games; I love to play FIFA and Call of Duty. Twitter: @keishaballa

Born in Tel Aviv, Israel, Asaf Borger grew up surrounded by music, learning to play the piano at only 3 years old. When Borger found EDM music DJ Borgore was born. Whether it is talking to an accomplished musician, or someone just getting started in the industry, Borgore is always looking to learn and expand his musical knowledge base and talents. Music is like therapy for Borgore, producing tracks that reflect his life experiences. Finding inspiration from the smallest to largest of places, Borgore’s mind and soul are open to endless possibilities. Working with popular artists such as Miley Cyrus and Waka Flocka, Borgore also embraces any opportunity to work with those who bring a different element of music to the table. FACES had the fortunate opportunity to chat with DJ Borgore before he hits Escapade on June 26th to talk about his career and musical process.
Tell us what it’s been like touring the United States for the last 8 years. It’s been pretty hectic, but it is everything I dreamed about – I am living my dream. Many people know you as an EDM artist, but you also have experience playing the drums, piano etc. in a band. What tuned you into EDM? My main instrument was actually the saxophone; I played the tenor and soprano. I love the fact that EDM has an amazing energy when you listen to it, which is kind of hard to achieve in any other genre. I also like that I have full control of the music, there are no other band members, so whatever I want to do music-wise is my own decision and I don’t have anyone to tell me that it won’t be good, or not to try something. With EDM you are also able to make the music sound like hip-hop or reggae, or any other genre, which keeps it very open. 2 years ago, you were talking about expanding your sound and label from hardcore dubstep to other sounds. Do you feel you’ve accomplished this? Definitely. I’m open to so many other sounds from house and honestly I just want to keep expanding further and further. You always need to find new sounds in music to grow. You have stated in previous interviews that you change up what you play according to the venue. How do you feel you will cater to the scene at Escapade? Well from my experience with Canadians, you guys love the hard stuff; you guys don’t mess around (laughs). So I feel like Canadians are open minded and they are like party people and they are down for anything, they don’t expect you to play this or that, they just want to get drunk and have fun (laughs)!
Tell us a little bit about how you see your place as a music producer, and what sets you apart. What sets me apart is the fact that I am actually producing my music, which is awesome. I grew up writing music so I had the background and I knew the theory, and how to play many instruments. I’ve been around music my whole life. For me it’s less about sitting in front of the computer and more about coming up with random melodies. I see myself as a true musician, someone who knows music. You have talked about your passion for house music stemming from having an open mind and your ADHD. What else inspires you and helps you through the music creation process? To be able to write music, you need to listen to music. What inspires me is listening to other tracks. But inspiration for music can come from anything, from watching a movie, reading a book, having a conversation, etc. Music is not just about music and melodies, but also about stories. Music tells a story and that story is life, so my life definitely affects my music. Most of my songs are events from my life, my feelings – it is like therapy for me. What was it like working with Miley Cyrus from 2012- 2013? Yea she was a lot of fun, she’s a good chick, I love her! I didn’t get any snob from her, she was very grounded. How did the song “Decisions” come to be? I had just moved to LA, which was hard for me, being away from my family and my country, and all of a sudden being in Hollywood. A lot of people in Hollywood are not real friends with you. You have to sift through what’s real, and what’s not.
“Most of my songs are events from my life, my feelings – its like therapy for me.”
Tell us a little bit about the story behind your hit “Forbes”. I bought a house in Forbes and I wrote about how I made it there (laughs)! Do you like working with artists with a different sound, or do you find your best work comes from working with relatively similar sounds? Working with people who have the same sound as you is boring. I like to work with people that can teach me new things; every person I work with, I learn something from. It’s almost selfish but knowledge is the greatest power and I just want to learn. So if it is sitting with someone who is super established, or with an 18 year old who has just started producing but has a different approach, you can learn from both. Do you visit Canada very often? If so, what are some things that stand out for you about our country? I love the French Vanilla from Tim Hortons! I love Canadians; you guys are just nice people! Also, all the chicks are on fire (laughs)! Are you excited to be visiting Ottawa for Escapade? I’m super excited because it’s with my label and its nice to see more of these events. It’s nice to see something that you have worked so hard for to become something. It’s super exciting and almost touching because I busted my a** for so long. What is next for Borgore? On June 1st I am releasing a new track that is kind of along the lines of my older tracks, like “Decisions” and I am singing again. Also this year I have been doing tons of work with Jamaica and people I have grown up listening to from Jamaica reggae music. Throughout the whole year it was just fire releasing, there is so much good stuff right now it’s intense, it’s very exciting. Twitter: @borgore

Mike Holmes Mike Holmes as been involved in construction and renovation since he was a young boy thanks to his father. Holmes was given the opportunity to run a renovation company when he was only 19 years old, and went on to fund his own renovation company shortly after. Carrying on the family tradition Holmes has worked with his own children to teach them how to become skilled in the field as well.
Holmes strongly believes that our country depends not only on tradespeople, but skilled tradespeople who are willing to put in the work and effort and do things right. It is evident watching Holmes work that he truly cares about his career, and that homeowners are safe and comfortable in their homes. FACES had the opportunity to catch up with Mike Holmes to talk about his passion, career, foundation, and how he is trying to help encourage young people to become skilled tradespeople like himself to better the future of our country.
In 2006 you started The Holmes Foundation, how did that come to be and what is the overall goal of the foundation? I started the The Holmes Foundation to help the next generation of pros get the training and support they need, which I’m doing through scholarships and bursaries. Renovation spending has been on the rise for 16 years straight; more money is being spent on renovations than on new-home construction, and skilled trades play a huge role in making sure we do it right the first time. Canada depends on skilled tradespeople to keep our country working and moving forward, but right now there’s a shortage. Unless we encourage more people—the right people— to enter the skilled trades, our building and construction industries are going to suffer. I want to make the construction industry better and I want the right people to be at the forefront. The Holmes Foundation is helping me do that. You’re famous for your home renovation skills and expertise - who inspired you to get into this line of work? My dad. When I was young I would watch my dad work around the house and on neighbour’s homes. He was a licensed plumber and a jack-of-all-trades; a master of none. He could do anything, from taking down walls or redoing our home’s plumbing. I guess he noticed my interest, so he started teaching me when I was really young. I had my eyes open, and I wanted to know. For me it was a totally exciting thing to do. He would tell people, “Hire my son”! I kept working and learning. Then by the time I was 19 I was offered a lot of money to run a renovation company, managing 14 people. You have set the standard for home renovations in North America and around the world. What does it mean to you to be able to help and inspire so many people? From the very beginning I wanted to help as many people as I could, but that’s just not realistic. So, by doing television, writing books and doing speaking engagements, I can help way more people beyond just the people on my shows. It’s about educating the public and giving them a good base so they can make sound decisions when doing a renovation or maintaining their home. What is your fondest memory growing up in Scarborough, Ontario? We didn’t have much growing up, but my family was close and we were happy, and there was always a good game of street hockey going on. What is one thing that people might not know about you? I can play the drums pretty well!
What is the biggest piece of advice you can give to a first time homeowner? Find a home inspector before you start looking. Do your homework and research. Ask them questions like, how long have they been a home inspector, what’s their professional background? Did they do construction, engineering etc.? You want a home inspector who knows a lot about homes, their construction and how they work. What is the most common mistake/problem you have seen throughout your career? Don’t expect a good contractor to be ready the next day. The good ones are usually booked well in advance. So do your homework, research your renovation and find a good contractor well before you want to start the job. What are some things you like to do when you’re not busy working? I love my cars. I have few, and I love my ATVs, but my favourite thing would be to be on my boat with friends and family. It is my true happy place! You have been featured on numerous different television shows over your career. What are you currently working on and what’s next for Mike Holmes? I’m always busy doing public appearances, interviews etc. I’ve been shooting my latest TV show, HOLMES & HOLMES, with my son Mike Holmes Jr. that airs later this fall on HGTV in Canada. Plus, I’m in the US filming the second season of HOME FREE with FOX at the moment, and I just finished working on HOME TO WIN, which is airing now on Sundays at 10PM on HGTV. I’m a busy guy! I really need to find time to schedule a holiday or I won’t get one! Do you think that there is a lack of classes teaching trades and technical skills in the Canadian education system? Yes, I do and I’m trying to change this. I remember taking shop class at school and I loved it. I already knew that I wanted to do construction well before my first shop class but a lot of kids don’t have that opportunity. It’s a great introduction into the skilled trades. We need more young people to get into the trades. In Canada we have a shortage of skilled tradespeople. We all depend on the work that skilled tradespeople do, so we need more people who care about quality and doing things right. That’s why organizations like Skills Canada are important, and why I’m also getting my kids, Sherry and Mike Jr. involved. Skills Canada and events like WorldSkills are helping put the pride back into the trades, which encourages more young people to consider it as a career. Twitter: @Make_It_Right

Nike Air Force One
Sneakers have being going in and out of style for years, and this year they are coming back strong. Check out these hot sneaker trends making waves in 2016.
The All White Sneaker Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid and Hailey Baldwin have all been spotted rocking white sneakers as of late. Air Force Ones are a popular choice for the summer!
Bold Colours Bright neon colours are
still very popular among runners and athletes alike. Whether in the gym, or on a run, bright coloured sneakers are continuing to be a very popular trend.
Adidas Yeezy
Yeezys Yeezys broke onto the sneaker scene this year and have quickly become the most sought after sneaker. Designed by Kanye West, his low-top sneakers have become all the rage and sit atop this year’s sneaker trend.

Formal Summer Wear for Men It’s not easy to dress formally during the summer without the sweat that comes with 3-layered suits! Do yourself a favor and follow these tips to help maintain a stylish look, while remaining dry. Comfort is confidence, and without the right materials you could be struggling this summer season!
There is nothing wrong with a tailored suit,
however, a suit that is too tight may be uncomfortable, and cause unwanted sweat stains!
Lose the layers! There is no need to wear an undershirt, a dress shirt, a vest, and a jacket. Lose the undershirt and vest and simply go with a 2-piece suit!
Too hot for a long-sleeved jacket? Swap it out for a vest over your dress shirt in order to look formal, without suffering from over heating.
Wear lighter colors. Blue is seen as a con-
fident, strong, and charismatic color. So swap out your black shirts for different shades of blue this summer. It will also attract less heat!
Try and find a linen suit as apposed to the usual heavy polyester. Cotton and linen are both great moisture wicking fabrics.
If you still want to wear a suit jacket, you can often get away with a short-sleeved dress shirt underneath the jacket!

For Easy Beachy Waves Put your wet hair in a loose braid at the back of your head before you go to bed. When you wake up you will have beautiful boho waves for the day.
To Protect Against a Sun-Burned Scalp Use a powder sunscreen to avoid greasing up your roots. Apply with a makeup brush where your hair naturally parts. You can also use a powder sunscreen on your face if lotion makes you too oily.
To Fight Back Against Green Hair Mix water and baking soda into a paste, and use it to rinse your hair after swimming. This will help combat the dreaded green hair for all of you pool noodles.
To Prevent Over-Drying from the Pool Wet your hair with tap water before diving in (many public and gym pools offer showers). Your hair will absorb the tap water, which helps to prevent the chlorine absorbing into your hair, preventing damage.
For Smooth Hair After Every Swim Turn in your towel and grab a cotton t-shirt to dry your wet hair. A cotton t-shirt will only take the excess water instead of all of it. This will help to keep your hair smooth and undamaged.
For Natural Highlights There are many variations on how to accomplish this, but the simplest way is by making a mix of lemon juice, honey and warm water. Spritz it on your hair and go and soak up some sun.
To Combat Dryness Coconut oil is a favourite of many, not only for it’s health benefits, but for beauty hacks as well! Turns out that a coconut oil mask is great for dried out hair from spending hours at the beach. Make your own at home to avoid harsh chemicals.

5 Things your Dog May be Trying to Tell You How is it that we can tell when our boss is mad, or when our waiter isn’t all that happy to see us, despite what she says? Our universal body language is able to say things that humans may not put into words. Our dogs have this same body language. Here are some things your dog may be trying to tell you.
1
His tail is like his smile, and he has many ways to show it. Wagging that is high is a confident and playful gesture. Middle wagging means he is thoroughly excited. A low wag is similar to a nervous laugh.
2
If your dog is standing off-balance in any way, he is most likely scared. When a dog is fearful or unsure of something in his environment, he will be prepared to run in the direction that will be the safest. The way in which your dog is leaning will point towards the direction he is thinking of running in.
3
If he growls while his tongue is out he is only playing. Anytime your dog’s tongue is out, he is completely relaxed and having fun. If a dog is feeling aggressive and is ready to bite, they will keep their tongue inside their mouth.
4
When he doesn’t hug you back, or doesn’t lean into you when you hug, it is because you are invading his space. In the dog world, a ‘hug’ or any invasion of space is considered to be an assertion of dominance. If your dog freezes up when you hug or lean into him, it may mean he is uncomfortable if you are close. Dogs can sense your calm and loving emotions and may understand your intentions, but if the dog doesn’t know you well, he may bite as a response to this challenge.
5
If your otherwise friendly dog is acting cranky, he may be in pain. Any sort of change in behavior can be a sign that your dog is hurting, but this one is not as obvious. Dogs act defensive when they do not feel their best. Try not to get mad at your dog for acting unusually aggressive.

What does your handshake say about you? In honor of National Handshake Day on June 30th, here are some do’s and don’t to help you make the perfect handshake.
Handshake Say About You?
The Wrist Breaker Don’t be that guy that has the over aggressive handshake who sprains someone’s wrist. This shake is often dismissed and leaves the person wondering what you are trying to over compensate for.
58 | June 2016
The Mushy Pea A soft shake can often give off the vibe that you lack self-confidence. If you are trying to be gentle (for the ladies) think again! This may come off as disrespectful and can lead to a bad first impression.
The Fancy Pants
The Doesn’tGet-The-Hint
The Perfect Handshake
Keep it simple! We all know that guy around the office that is always asking you to “pound it”. This can come off as immature and unprofessional in the workplace. Not cool, bro.
You go in for the shake and it goes on and on… and on. This can leave the person extremely awkward and unsure of how to act next. A good rule of thumb is to keep it to two seconds. Short and sweet!
Make eye contact, smile, and give a firm shake for 2-3 seconds. Professional, classy and confident.

Signs of Having an Anxiety Disorder

Peeee-ew!
1
Sudden feelings of fear, uneasiness and panic for no apparent reason.
For those of you unsure as to whether or not you have an anxiety disorder, here are a few key symptoms of the disorder:
A lot of people are familiar with the term “anxiety disorder”, but unless you actually have this disorder, it can be quite difficult to understand. Many of us have experienced anxiety attacks, but it is important to note that it is not the same as a disorder. Anxiety disorders are a type of mental disorder where anxiety does its worst on an individual and can lead to shakiness, a racing heart, sweating, and other unpleasant symptoms. These attacks are often extremely hard to help and they cannot be waived off by “thinking happy thoughts”.
Apprehensive feelings.
5
Tingles or numbing in your hands and feet.
6
Constant tenseness.
7
Fear that danger and catastrophe are around each corner you walk by.
8
Brush and floss your teeth more often (at least twice a day), easy peasy.
Brush your tongue with your toothbrush. This is an often forgotten part of the hygiene routine but is important as your tongue holds a lot of bacteria.
Make sure you rinse out your mouth with mouthwash. While flossing is great, your mouth is still filled with odour causing bacteria.
Eat less foods that make your breath go sour, such as onions, garlic, etc.
Avoid having mints after dinner and instead opt for gum containing xylitol. Not only is xylitol great for gum health; it does not convert to acid in your mouth like sugar does, leaving you with fresher breath for longer.
Bad breath how to help it
It happens to the best of us… it silently creeps up on us… maybe after a meal, or a nap. Bad breath. Quick, grab the gum!

Parents Beware: the obligation to encourage a child to see the other parent goes beyond lip service By Mimi Marrello Separation is never easy. In addition to financial obligations, parenting of the children usually makes the separation even more difficult and often oppositional. When a couple separates, the determination of parenting decisions will be made in accordance with the child’s best interest. Section 24 of the Children’s Law Reform Act, R.S.O. 1990. c. C.12, as am. sets out the merits of an application for custody or access of a child in Ontario. Sub-section 24(2) lists factors that will be considered when determining what is in a child’s best interests. These include (but are not limited to) the love, affection and emotional ties between the child and a parent, the length of time the child has lived in a stable home environment, the child’s views and preferences, and the plan proposed by each parent for the child’s care and upbringing. As a family law practitioner, we are often asked when can a child decide where they will reside and do they have to see the other parent. The child’s views and preferences will only be considered if they can “reasonably be ascertained”. The child’s age, maturity and development will be considered when determining their views and preferences. The Court and mental health professionals have made it clear that a child of any age should not be put in the position of having to decide where they will live. The issue of parenting is an adult decision and should not involve a child having to testify against a parent during a trial. Having said that, a teenager’s position on where they live and how much time the child spends with the other parent will be given great consideration. What is a parent to do then when an older child refuses to see the other parent as required in an access order? This situation was considered by the Ontario Court of Appeal in Godard v. Godard 2015 ONCA 568 (CanLII). In this case, the father was granted access every second weekend to the parties’ daughter, S. who was 12 years old, pursuant to a Court Order. After having been denied any contact with his daughter for some time,
the father brought a contempt motion against the mother. The motion Judge found that the mother “had effectively abdicated her parental authority on the issue of access” and found her in contempt of the access order. The finding of contempt is a strict test that has a civil and criminal component. Most importantly, the breach of the access order has to be done deliberately and wilfully beyond a reasonable doubt. The mother appealed the contempt finding to the Court of Appeal. The Motion Judge and the Court of Appeal both concluded that, since separation, the mother had engaged in behaviour that tried to limit or terminate the father’s access to his daughter. The Court has made it clear that every parent has a positive obligation to ensure that a child continues to have access with the other parent. Steps need to be taken when a child, and especially an older child, decides to not have contact with the other parent. While physical force is not an option, there are other options including: withholding the child’s allowance, not allowing them to participate in sports or a tournament, or taking away a privilege.
