For Nepean native Sandra Oh, the success of her new hit series “Killing Eve has been yet another giant step in her career. The critically-acclaimed spy drama, which sees Oh play an MI5 agent hunting down a psychopathic assassin (Jodie Comer), marks yet another personal and professional triumph for the 47-year-old Canadian who is one of the few Asian actors to have succeeded in Hollywood. In January, Oh took home the Golden Globe for her work in the massively popular BBC TV series which has already been renewed for a second season.

Sandra Oh

Apart from winning the award, Oh also co-hosted the 2019 Golden Globes ceremonies held at the The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. Adding poignancy to the occasion, Oh thanked her parents who were in attendance at the glamorous ceremonies. “Oh, Daddy,” said Oh to start her thank you speech, watching as her father helped lead the audience in a standing ovation. “Mostly, there are two people here tonight that I am so grateful that they are here with me. I’d like to thank my mother, my father,” Oh said before telling them, in Korean, “Umma and Appa, saranghaeyo,” which translates into English as “Mom and Dad, I love you.” Oh grew up in Nepean to Korean immigrant parents who, 25 years ago, had pleaded with her to attend Carleton University and pursue studies in journalism rather than opt for a career in the arts. But once she became a household name with her 10-year stint on Grey’s Anatomy that began in 2005, Oh proved to her family that acting wasn’t such a risky venture after all. Winning the Golden Globe is merely icing on the cake, having already earned an Emmy nomination last September for playing Eve. Oh is currently shoot-

ing the second season in London, and looking forward to being able to explore her character’s “vulnerability” and renewed “vigour” in life. It was back in the spring of 1990 that Sandra decided to pursue theatre studies over the sometimes-fierce objections of her high-achieving Korean-born mother and father. They thought she was making a “big mistake” by turning down a four-year full scholarship to Carleton in order to fulfil her artistic aspirations in a profession which they regarded as frivolous by comparison “They just didn’t understand,” she recalled “Most parents, especially immigrant parents, would not want their child to go into something as intensely insecure as acting. I know they did it with my best interests at heart. And I am eternally grateful for the struggle...” Added Oh last year in a Tweet: “I think my mother at this moment may actually be satisfied!” Oh is a major celebrity of course in Nepean and Ottawa where she received the key to the city in 2013. Oh is proud that her parents, Joon-Soo and Young-Nam Oh, are well-respected in Ottawa’s Korean community. While they’ve come to

many award shows with her including this year’s Golden Globes, she recalled getting the key was special because it was one of the first times her entire family had been able to share an award with her. “I have shamelessly brought my parents to almost every award show,” Oh said. “But this (was) very different. My entire family...and the entire community I grew up with and the people who have watched me grow up were also able to come.” Over the years, Sandra Oh has gained major recognition for her work as one of the stars of the long-running hit TV series, Grey’s Anatomy. Some of her film roles include those in Sideways (she was married from 2003-06 to the film’s director, Alexander Payne), Under the Tuscan Sun, and Rabbit Hole. As far as never-ending rumours of a possible return to Grey’s Anatomy, Oh wants to let her fans know that that ship has sailed: “I am absolutely grateful that for a decade in my life I got to play such a beautiful character, Cristina Yang. But it’s not where my life is now,” declared Oh. “It would be a heartfelt ‘no!’”

I am absolutely grateful that for a decade in my life I got to play such a beautiful character, Cristina Yang. But it’s not where my life is now.

the interview Sandra, Killing Eve has been another colossal hit for you. Why do you think it has resonated so strongly with audiences? I think people can identify with how this woman finds a renewed spark in life... (She’s) a woman in the middle of life, who is stagnating in some way in her job—where she does a decent job—and in her marriage, which is a fine and lovely marriage. She’s not really curious, she’s not really paying attention and she’s not a really vital or dynamic person. But... we see the spark of life that emerges from her.

Tracking down Villanelle, the sociopathic killer played by Jodie Comer, seems to ignite a spark within Eve? She’s fascinated with this female assassin who is committing these terrible crimes and doing so with flair and without remorse. She’s strangely drawn to that kind of person…But I think as her relationship [with Villanelle] continues to grow, as she searches for this killer, she really discovers what’s inside of herself. What was it that attracted you to Eve as a middle-aged woman going through some sort of crisis and seems bored with her life?

She’s plateaued in life, I would say, she’s stagnating is a better way of putting it rather than saying that she feels bored... The aspect I was extremely interested in was that Eve, in all her kind of messiness, is hunting an international killer with her handbag. (Laughs) She’s kind of walking down the street with her handbag and there’s something I really love about that, because it’s not sleek, it’s not suddenly like a Jason Bourne movie. Eve is very naive, and she doesn’t understand what she’s getting into, which is that she’s headed down this dark path. There are other elements of the series that I really love, which is the international locations, the overall style of it, or genre of it. But the

It’s not so much that I consciously seek characters that are determined or confident. I’m interested in what takes them to where they want to go.

that you have a middle-aged lady who is very determined, but doesn’t know exactly what she is doing — that really fascinated me. How have you tried to get into Eve’s head and her perspective on her mission? I like Eve’s vulnerability and I spent a lot of this show being scared. And I thought that was also very interesting. It’s not so much that I consciously seek characters that are determined or confident. I’m interested in what takes them to where they want to go. If I can relate to what a character wants, I will give my all to get that character to that place. One benefit of this series is that it might finally stop people from asking you whether you intend to make a return appearance as Cristina on Grey’s Anatomy? (Laughs) I don’t know if people will ever stop asking me that... Every year or so, someone close to me is going to come up and say, “So I heard you’re coming back,” and I’ve always been so confused by that. What I’m learning that it tells me is that it still has its life, and I appreciate that the life of this character, Cristina … is still a part of that world. Grey’s Anatomy has taken on iconic status as one of the most magnetic TV series ever?

I think that Grey’s has carved out a very unique place in television. Also because it straddles two different eras of television. When we started it, it was still network. You watched something weekly. It was almost like analog television, you know? Coming through a transition of how people watch it, I have generations of people who come up to me. It constantly changes. Now there’s a new generation of people watching it. How are they seeing it now? They weren’t alive or whatever when the series first aired. So what show can you say has that power, and also just came along at that right moment? It had all these magical, lightning-in-abottle elements, and that’s what is continuing to give it its longevity. I mean, I think it’s amazing. Because people are very loyal to it. Do you ever watch Grey’s Anatomy? You know what? I’ve never watched the show, even when I was playing in it. It was too close to me and I had to have some distance to it especially since I have a hard time seeing myself on the screen. But I’m glad that the series is still going strong. Are you glad to be shooting another season of Killing Eve? Killing Eve was the right series at the right time to have come along for me. I’m very happy to be able to work on it again. (The first) eight

episodes weren’t really enough. I really love the show, I like the style of it, I like the thriller aspect. I also like being able to play a character who is able to express not only a rainbow of emotions, but also a lot of depth. When did you start acting? I started performing in school plays when I was 10 and growing up in Nepean, a suburb of Ottawa. The first time I ever acted was in a play called “Canada Goose” at Knoxdale Public School. Later I started getting serious about acting while I was attending Sir Robert Borden School and participating in the Canada Improv games (in Ottawa) during my time in high school. Was improv work something that made you excited about acting? Doing improv was very important training for me and I’ve been able to use the skills I learnt doing improv throughout my career. That was when I realised that acting was something I really loved and wanted to devote myself to. I also did improv work with a community comedy troupe called Skit Row High and that kind of training has proven invaluable throughout my career. Later on I attended the National Theatre School of Canada in Montreal and after that I started working in TV and film.

FEVER The 2019 Ferguslea Properties Ltd Senators Soirée presented by Bell, the premier fundraising event of the Ottawa Senators Foundation, has raised $271,835 in support of children and youth on February 9th, 2019. Monies raised will help the Ottawa Senators Foundation give children and youth the opportunity to attend summer camp, learn how to skate, play sports, and access support and treatment from world-class healthcare facilities, all as a result of the generosity of sponsors, guests and donors. More than 650 guests, along with Senators players, members of the coaching staff and management, met Carissa, a patient in the new Senators Foundation funded Oncology Well Being program at CHEO. This novel program was initiated by families and born out of an identified need for mental health support. Clinical psychologists are available to provide assessments, consultations and counselling to children and youth currently in treatment as well as to cancer survivors who have to deal with lingering effects from their treatment. “The first time Dan and I attended the Senators Soirée, we had a wonderful time getting to know the players and coaches off the ice. We’ve never 32 | FACES MAGAZINE

missed a year since!” said Barbara Crook on behalf of her husband, Ferguslea Properties president Dan Greenberg. “We are especially proud to sponsor this event and support the great work of the Ottawa Senators Foundation. Together, we are making a difference for local children and youth.” “The Ferguslea Properties Ltd Senators Soiree is a collection of community-focused organizations and people, including our players, who have come together to help us make a positive impact for children and youth,” said Danielle Robinson, president, and CEO, Ottawa Senators Foundation. “Thanks to their generosity and belief in our mission, kids like Carissa will always have someone to talk to when needed. We’re continuing to break barriers for thousands of other children, giving them an opportunity to access programs and services across the National Capital Region.” One-of-a-kind experiential auction items were the theme of the evening highlighted by a one-of-akind helicopter tour featuring two Ottawa Senators players. Other items included a private dinner with the Senators alternate captains, a video game battle with two Senators players and an opportunity to be in the 2018-19 Senators team photo.

Canada in the 80s was a very difficult time and place for technology and musicians. We had to listen to cassette tapes (Google it). We made mixtapes. This meant listening to the radio, waiting for the song you want and hitting record on our ghetto blaster (Google that one too). And Canadian artists? They needed validation in the US to achieve any level of success, even at home. Corey Hart achieved this and more. Corey Hart’s 1984 signature hit Sunglasses at Night blew up. It transitioned Hart form aspiring Montreal-born artist to international superstar. Hart produced more smash hits

in Never Surrender and Boy in the Box. He opened for massive acts like Culture Club and Hall Oates before headlining his own arena tour. He raked in domestic and international awards. Corey Hart is a Canadian music icon. Corey Hart is releasing a new EP on May 3rd called Dreaming Time Again. He’s an inductee to the Canadian Music Hall of Fame at this year’s Juno Awards. On June 12th, you can hear new tracks and 80s hits when Hart performs at the Canadian Tire Centre, back on tour after 20 years.

What was life like growing up in Montreal? I was a lonely kid. I was the youngest of five, and my parents split up when I was a little boy. We moved around a couple of different places before my parents decided to split up. That’s why I speak Spanish: because I lived in Spain. So, music became my best friend. I discovered music through radio. I fell asleep and woke up with the radio on. I used to buy 45s and sing in front of the bathroom mirror with my toothbrush. Those were happy moments, but I wouldn’t say I had an idyllic childhood. You’ve engaged with some incredible talents. Early in your career you collaborated with Billy Joel, Eric Clapton, Tom Jones and Paul Anka. What was it like engaging with these talents? With Tom Jones it was one encounter where I sang for him. It was significant for an 11-yearold kid who was shaking when he realized how important he was. It was actually my sister who introduced me to him. We were living in Florida at the time and she had come down to visit for Christmas. She heard me singing all the time and thought she would introduce me to Tom Jones because she knew him. But with Paul Anka we put some miles on the road together. In the mid 80s Sunglasses at Night blew up. What was it like transitioning from aspiring artist to superstardom? It’s surreal. Especially being recognized so quickly thanks to MTV and MuchMusic. It was more MTV because MuchMusic hadn’t started yet in the summer of 84. But within 6-7 weeks of the video being released I wasn’t able to go places. People were freaking out and screaming and chasing me. This is what I thought Beatlemania was about. But suddenly I couldn’t even go to the airport without security.

It was another lifetime away from where I am now, but it was surreal. It seems almost cartoonish that it was going on. But there’s no school to teach you how to deal with that. So, you really need your feet firmly planted on the ground, and not believe the whole ‘rock star’ myth. Because if you do, then you’re going to go down a dangerous rabbit hole. Is it true that you were given a screentest for the role of Marty McFly in Back to the Future? I was. There were a lot of offers from Hollywood in ’84 and ’85, but that was the most notable one. I read the script and people were telling me to do it because it was Spielberg’s company and a big film. But I never wanted to be an actor. I knew what my boundaries were. I’m not an actor, I’m a musician/ singer-songwriter. Not that you can’t be both, but I didn’t want to be both. My kids, now, think that daddy was an idiot (laughs). But we all make decisions in retrospect that we could have done differently. But honestly, that’s not who I am. I followed my passion. Your new EP, Dreaming Time Again, comes out May 3rd. Describe your process for creating the 5 tracks. It all came together very quickly. I met Bob Ezra in 2017 and started writing songs for the record the following year. They’re all songs in the present-tense and they’re autobiographical now, reflecting on the last 20-25 years. The song First Rodeo is actually reflecting on my whole career. It’s a song about the music business and having the miles on my car. You can’t sing “this ain’t my first rodeo” unless you’ve been through it. There are no false expectations or illusions about what I’m getting into.

“THE FANS ARE GIVING ME A GIFT, BECAUSE I DIDN’T THINK I WOULD BE DOING THIS AGAIN.

What was it like working with fellow Canadian music icon Jim Cuddy on that track? He’s Sir James! It was actually a fan on FaceBook who suggested I work with him. That’s how organic the process was. The song was written, and I was ready to record it before Jim came on board. So, it was just a coincidence that the title has ‘rodeo’ in it. Where did you draw inspiration for the title track, Dreaming Time Again? It just felt like the right song and title because it’s me revisiting the early dreams I had. The song is uplifting and joyous, especially on a personal level. The Never Surrender tour kicks off in St. John’s, NL and works its way to Vancouver, BC. The first show is on May 31st, which is your birthday. Was that planned? It was planned. The only concert I’ve done in the last 15 years was at the Bell Centre. I wanted my last show in 2014 to be on my birthday because it was nearly 30 years to the day that my song came out in the United States, but we couldn’t make it happen. It was in Montreal so my kids could see what I used to do, because they had never seen me perform before. It was also a chance to say goodbye to my fans. When the promoter booked the 2014 show at the Bell Centre on May 31st, there was a chance that the Montreal Canadiens would go deep in the playoffs. They get first priority of the venue. Sure enough, they went on a run, and I was forced to change the date 2 days before the show. When Live Nation asked me when I wanted to start the tour I asked if May 31st was available, and Mile One in St. Johns was open for the date. How does it feel to be doing such a big arena tour? Massively exciting. I don’t know

how my body is going to react because I haven’t been on the road for a while. I think my voice will be OK. But there’s also new technology that didn’t exist when I used to tour. For example, I had to get custom in-ears made. In my day, we had wedges and monitors and you heard your voice and instruments. Your sound guy would adjust it the way you liked it, but that’s how you heard yourself. Now, singers use in-ear pieces to do the same thing. I need this for a long tour. So, they made custom in-ears, which are new for me. You’ll be making a stop in Ottawa on June 12th. What can fans expect from the show? I’m going to do a good amount of songs, but not a 4 ½ hour set like at the Bell Centre. I’m going to play what I think my fans want to hear. They can expect to hear the hits, and to see an artist who is super pumped. The fans are giving me a gift because I did not think I would be doing this again. I’ve got Kenny Aronoff playing drums on the tour. He was the drummer of John Mellencamp. We’ve been friends for 30 years and he’s a massive drummer. In fact, the first two verses of Dreaming Time are about him. Do you have any favourite spots to visit when you’re in Ottawa? The truth is that whenever we did shows in Ottawa we would drive back to Montreal, because that’s my hometown. So, I don’t really know the city so well. But it’s such a beautiful and charming city. The architecture makes it look European. My best memory of Ottawa is Lansdowne Park in the summer of 1985. We performed and recorded Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer live. We told the fans they had to imagine it was bone-chilling December or January. It’s still played today across Canada at Christmas. It was also the second biggest audience I had ever played in front of.

What would most people be surprised to learn about you? That I make great omelets. I did that on CTV Morning Ottawa, but I’m not sure how it turned out. I had to rush it, which I’m not used to doing. So, I hope it turned out OK. People have been posting pictures of the 10-year challenge. But someone posted a picture of you and called it the Corey Hart 30-year challenge because you look so young. What is your secret? When I’m out with my kids, people think I’m their older brother or one of my daughter’s boyfriends (laughs). I think genetically my mom and dad have good genes, but I never did drugs, smoked or drank. I saw that stuff and had the pressure in the 80s, but I never gave in. Even to this day. I’ve never done weed, hard drugs or even a cigarette. When my kids say I look young and healthy I keep telling them that being clean contributed to me looking young.

“THE SONG FIRST RODEO IS ACTUALLY REFLECTING ON MY WHOLE CAREER. IT’S A SONG ABOUT THE MUSIC BUSINESS AND HAVING THE MILES ON MY CAR. YOU CAN’T SING “THIS AIN’T MY FIRST RODEO” UNLESS YOU’VE BEEN THROUGH IT. THERE ARE NO FALSE EXPECTATIONS OR ILLUSIONS ABOUT WHAT I’M GETTING INTO.”

SPRING INTO CLEAN

It’s that time of year; the days are getting brighter, the air is feeling fresher, and your house needs that deep clean to shake off those winter blues. Over 66% of people are more motivated to clean once the spring months roll around, according to Ketchum Global Research and Analytics.

WE SCOURED FORUMS AND BOOKS ALIKE TO SAVE YOU TIME AND MONEY ON YOUR SPRING CLEAN WITH THESE 10 CREATIVE AND EFFECTIVE CLEANING HACKS.

UNCLOG DRAINS AND SHOWER HEADS

Serve it to Scuffs

Clogged drains can feel hopeless, but this hack will have your drain clear in 10 minutes. First, pour some boiling water down the drain. Then pour in one cup of baking soda, followed by one cup of vinegar. Cover the drain and let sit for ten minutes.

Try taking out those wall and floor scuffs with a tennis ball. It works like an eraser. Cut an X in the ball and attach a handle for hard-toreach places.

Clean Around Taps

Blindside Hard-To-Reach Dust

Wave Goodbye to Pet Hair

Get that hard to reach buildup around taps with ease. Soak a washcloth in boiling hot water and place around the tap’s base. Pour vinegar on the washcloth until it soaks through and let sit for 1 hour. Take off the washcloth, and scrub away buildup with a toothbrush.

Dust collects in many places around your house, but one of the least noticeable places is on your blinds. You never realize until you look closely and see just how much dirt has built up. Dip a paintbrush in hot, soapy water, and run it along the blinds to get the job done.

Anyone with a pet knows how much work it takes to keep your home clean. For those places that the vacuum can’t reach, use rubber gloves to get rid of pet hair. Wet the gloves, wipe away the clumps of fur, and give your home that much needed refresh.

WASH YOUR WASHING MACHINE 40 | FACES MAGAZINE

Over time, washing machines can build up residue and begin to smell. Run a cycle of hot water and vinegar (1/4 cup for smaller or newer machines, 1/2 cup for larger or older machines), and repeat the cycle (not adding more vinegar) until there are no suds left. Do not have any clothes in your machine.

Wipe off and rinse in the morning to have your driveway look like new. Repeat this process with baking soda (moistened with water) to make concrete patios and walkways bright again.

those crevices and fight those stains.

Flush Down Dirty Toilets And following that up, nothing feels dirtier than an unkept toilet. Brighten your toilet bowl with a few drops of essential oil and baking soda. Use your scrub brush, and watch the stains disappear.

STAKE OUT CARPET STAINS Remove that persistent carpet stain by ironing it right out. Mix Âź cup of vinegar, 1 tbsp of dishwashing liquid and 1 cup of hot water together then pour your stain. Wet a cloth or towel with hot water and set over the stain. Leave for 10 minutes. Put your iron on medium heat (high heat may burn the carpet, but use if you see no results with medium). Iron over the stain for 10 - 20 seconds until the stain has transferred onto the cloth. Remove cloth and dry the area.

The 3 Most Important Things About Nutrition Food brings people together. Whether it’s at a holiday meal with your family, lunch with an old friend, or cake at a child’s birthday party, food dictates routine, energy, and balance. March is Nutrition Month, so we sat down with Registered Dietitian, Charlene Kennedy, to talk about the three most important things to consider if you’re ready to get serious about your nutrition.

Prioritizing healthy eating, even with a busy schedule According to Dietitians of Canada, almost half of all Canadians say that eating a balanced diet is challenging for them because they are so busy. Charlene discusses how planning ahead contributes to finding success with nutritional choices. “We schedule our kids hockey practices, yoga classes and dinners with friends. But don’t forget, we need to allow time in our week for meal planning, grocery shopping, meal prep as well as time to actually eat! My tip is to actually pencil these events into your calendar.“

02

Protein Snacks Studies also showed that only 30% of Canadians snack to stay fuelled in a busy day. It is important to give your body the fuel it needs in order to stay energized and keep your mind working at its best. Charlene explains the importance of not just having a snack, but considering the components in what you’re

eating. “Make sure your snacks include a source of protein. This will help you stay full longer and have a better chance of making it to next meal without

feeling famished.”

03 Patience & Reason Charlene discusses how it can be confusing to make sense of the messages out there on nutrition. In the age of social media, there is an overwhelming amount of information on what diets you should be doing. She tells us simply to take things slow to figure out what works best for you and your life. “Make one change at a time as opposed to a complete diet overhaul. Once you’ve successfully made the first change, go on to the next one on your list. If you weren’t able to sustain the first change you made, that’s okay. Move onto number two. Give yourself grace and time.”

ADVENTURES IN

AUTISM

There are so many great organizations that look to create awareness for a specific cause. What makes TSN 1200 Steve Warne’s story so special is the honesty, vulnerability, and willingness to share and educate others.

His recent project, Adventures in Autism, strives to bring awareness by sharing Steve and his son’s experiences. Steve explained to us how awareness evolves into tolerance and acceptance, then to understanding and kindness, to more money for research, and improved treatment that’s accessible to all. Steve’s stories are all based from personal experience of raising his autistic son, Michael, who is now 23 years old. Steve is a well-known sports personality for the local TSN 1200 radio station. He’s a husband, and father of two. Looking through the Twitter feed for this new project, it’s clear to see the incredible resilience and patience that Steve embodies. “We are extremely happy in our life with Michael and I want that to be the thing that shines through. I think people respond to that. Within that, there will hopefully be many moments that help people learn, gather insight, and ramp up awareness.”

44 | FACES MAGAZINE

When Steve and his wife Linda received the sad news of a diagnosis at CHEO when Michael was two, he explained how it was both shocking and heartbreaking. Michael’s first year seemed perfectly typical. Nevertheless, they powered through the initial surprise and began attending autism seminars in order to become better equipped to teach and help. They hired a lot of expert help over the years to work on language and communication. Linda handled the difficult tasks of securing government funding, organizing therapists, attending school meetings and volunteering for autism groups.

“My wife has been our autism quarterback...she’s been amazing in every way.” Adventures in Autism shares genuine videos of Michael’s favourite activities, such as driving to see electrical towers, visiting arenas that have banners, checking out Schleich animal figurines, and going to Wal Mart to see their latest schedule of DVD releases. “We’re fortunate in that Michael is verbal (many autistic people are not),

M A R C H / A P R I L

has many skills and is almost always happy. His language skills are good, he has a great sense of humour and his memory skills are superhuman. For example, on cue, he can tell you the specific release date of every pop song in the last 20 years”. By allowing viewers to follow along, Steve shines light on this complex condition in a way that makes it easier for people to digest. After one video, it is almost impossible not to become hooked. In such an interesting way that is difficult to put into words, the footage reveals the hard work this family has put in to fully accepting who Michael is, and in return, pulls on viewers’ heartstrings to have a new appreciation for what autism means for families. “I like how timeless this project feels. I’ve done thousands of sports radio shows. Sports shows generally stay relevant for a few days, never to be listened to again. People who discover the channel will have content that should remain relevant until the day autism is wiped out.”

2 0 1 9

April is Autism Awareness Month. To get involved, Steve mentioned wearing a blue ribbon, posting on social media, making a donation or joining an autism fundraiser. But ultimately, he suggests that people just look to be more understanding, accepting and kind. Many people could choose to let a diagnosis of autism negatively cast a shadow on the rest of their lives; Steve has chosen to share his personal feelings and light-hearted, unfiltered stories to educate people in the community. His main goal of creating awareness is already very much in motion with over 1000 followers on the Twitter account started in early December 2018. Visit www.adventuresinautism.ca for a look at this inspiring story of family and strength.

HERIETH PAUL Herieth Paul is one of the world’s top supermodels. Since her career took off at age 15, she’s been the face of Armani, Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, Cavalli, and almost any other top designer you can think of. She’s been in Harper’s Bazaar, Elle Canada, Vogue Italia, and the list goes on. At just 23 years old, Herieth has already reached a major milestone that many supermodels can only dream of, with multiple appearances on one of the biggest fashion stages in the world—the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. She is one of the world’s fashion elite, and a quick search of her name will show you her astonishing career, mixed with pictures of her mingling with today’s top stars, designers and models, including Gigi Hadid.

Herieth was born in Tanzania, and she moved with her mother and sister to Ottawa at age 14. It wasn’t much later that she met Angie, owner and director of Angie’s Models and Talent Agency, who put her on to the world of modeling. You may recognize the name; AMTI is the same agency that discovered a young Cornwall boy named Ryan Gosling. Angie’s has been a link for many of Ottawa’s actors and models to make it to larger stages in the world. Herieth spent her teen years travelling the world as an international supermodel. That meant studying for school on international flights to and from fashion gigs and, as she told the Ottawa Citizen in 2014, avoiding the urge to buy a Mercedes Benz for her first car. Now 23, Herieth is a bright and intelligent young woman with an incredible story to tell. She uses her platform and following to give back to her home community, while exuding confidence and a captivating authenticity. You moved to Ottawa from Tanzania when you were just 11 years old. What was it like for you to move from your home country at a young age? Moving to Ottawa was an adventure for me. I was able to see snow for the first time and to learn about Canadian culture while living in the Capital City. It wasn’t a culture shock for me at all. I found my way and blended in so quick that I felt like Canada was my home from day one. What are some of your favourite memories of growing up in Ottawa?

Playing in the snow, skating on the rideau canal, eating poutine, and celebrating Canada Day at Parliament Hill. The fireworks were my favourite. When you were 13, you walked into Angie’s Model and Talent Agency in Ottawa during a casting call. What made you decide to seek out modelling? I remember I wanted to try acting. After watching so many Disney TV shows, I wanted to be part of the acting world. I had done my research and saw that Angie’s AMTI was the best and had connections with Disney. When I walked into Angie’s, I was early. Super early! So she told me to come back at 1pm. When I came back, she let me skip the line and told me I had potential of becoming a supermodel. I was ecstatic. Angie saw something in me that I didn’t even see in myself, and for that I will always be grateful to Angie Sakla-Seymour. Shortly after that, your modeling career took off. What were some of the biggest challenges you faced while learning the world of modelling? One of the biggest challenges I faced was balancing school and modeling. I would be on set on a Calvin Klein shoot and I would be doing my trigonometry homework. It was very difficult but I managed to finish school and graduate with honors. I also had tutors from all around the world. It was a crazy few years of high school. How instrumental has your mother, sisters, and father been in your modelling career so far?

throughout all the ups and downs. I look up to my sister a lot and she is a great role model for me. She is the kind of woman that doesn’t take no for an answer. I’m learning a lot from her. Also my Mother Agent (Angie) and my family worked closely together. Angie would always discuss everything with us. As a young adult juggling school, normal teenage pressures and an international modelling career, how did you manage it all? Did you find it hard to have a balance or to have a normal childhood outside of modelling? I’m great at speaking my mind. And I know when to speak up if I need some time off from work. Having a diplomat mother taught me from an early age how to manage worldly pressures. Whether it’s work, relationships, etc., it was definitely a challenge to balance it all, but I am honest and I continue to be honest with myself and others around me. One of the first big campaigns you landed was Calvin Klein. Can you describe the moment that you learned you booked the campaign? How did it feel? In all honesty, I had heard of the brand Calvin Klein but I had never thought in my entire life that I would be able to work with Calvin Klein. I wasn’t shocked because it had been an ongoing process of castings, call backs and fittings, but I was so grateful. Calvin Klein was one of the first brands to believe in me and give me a chance.

My family is the best. They have always been so supportive and they have continued to support me

“IT WAS DEFINITELY A CHALLENGE TO BALANCE IT ALL, BUT I AM HONEST AND I CONTINUE TO BE HONEST WITH MYSELF AND OTHERS AROUND ME.”

“BEING ON THAT RUNWAY MADE ME FEEL LIKE I COULD ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING.” Another milestone in your career has been walking as a VS Angel in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. What was it like when you learned that you’d be walking in the show for the first time? I can’t describe the feeling. I was in a taxi going home from a shoot and my agent called me and told me that I had gotten the show. I had to get out of the taxi and scream and do a little dance! I couldn’t believe it. Doing the Victoria’s Secret fashion show had been a dream of mine since I started modeling. How does it feel it be walking down the Victoria’s Secret runway? The feeling is indescribable. I felt powerful and strong and beautiful. Being on that runway made me feel like I could accomplish anything I put my mind, heart and soul to. You’ve achieved so much at such a young age. What are some goals you have for your career in the next five years? I would love to have my own skin care line. Maybe a collaboration of some sort and maybe even get back to my first love (acting).

If you weren’t a successful model, what career path do you think you would have chosen? I would still be in this creative world. Maybe an artist, sculptor, or painter. I love creating and making things and using my heart to create art. Take us behind the scenes of your daily life. What’s on your playlist? I’m such a fan of podcasts. I stopped listening to music so much while I’m at the gym. I listen to a lot of podcasts, and my favorite ones are Affirmation Pod and Kwik Brain. What is one thing you can’t live without?

One thing I can’t live without is lip balm. My favorite one is from Maybelline called Baby Lips. What are some of your favourite brands to wear? I wear a lot of different brands. I’m a girly tomboy. For dressy events I love wearing Zarruci. She is an Ottawa designer. She makes amazing dresses And for traveling and just chilling, I love wearing my ToodieFLY hoodie. It’s a hoodie made from towel fabric. It’s so comfortable. Do you come back to Ottawa often? When you do, where do you like to go? Any favourite restaurants? I have so many. But my favourite

restaurant lately has been Mati. They do amazing brunches on the weekend. Your mother started an orphanage in your home country of Tanzania. What does it mean to you to be able to make an impact in your home communities? My mother was always working with charities and in 2013, she started an orphanage, SACHIA Society, which stands for save the children in Africa. My mother has taught me from a young age that giving back to our communities and helping others is our duty. We have been making an impact since day one. The kids at Sachia come from hard and tough environments, and most of them are orphans. We try to teach them life skills and we also support them.

Our goal to make sure they know that somebody cares and treasures them, and to inspire them to reach higher and strive for more despite where they come from. All that matters is where they are going. Are there any other charities that are close to your heart? I have gotten a chance to work with Every Mother Counts. It’s a nonprofit organization that helps mothers and women in Haiti, Guatemala and other countries. Up to 40% of women have complications during childbirth, especially women in third world countries.  What advice do you have for any aspiring models out there?

My advice would be that if you are disciplined and focused, you can accomplish anything. Trust in yourself and believe in yourself. If you have a dream, hold on to that dream and don’t let it go. Dreaming is manifesting. It will become if you believe. What is one piece of advice that you received that you will never forget? One piece of advice I was told and still use to this day is water. Drink it. It will solve 90% of your problems. Skin problems, that is. @heriethpaul

Paint Colours

For every room in your home, according to science.

A new coat of paint can completely change the look and feel of your home. It's important to consider what mood you want to create in each room, as every colour holds psychological value. Research done by Taubman’s, Limited Virtual Reality, and a team of psychologists and neuroscientists proved that the colour on the walls has a direct correlation with a person’s emotions. Spring is considered the best season to freshen up your house and encourage a renewed lifestyle, so we’ve done the dirty work to make selecting your paint colours easy and have your house feeling new in no time.

Light Blue promotes tranquility and brings ease into your home. It also gives a sense of peace, so it’s a perfect colour for a bedroom accent wall or bathroom. Deep blue creates a zen-like space, and helps the room feel like a spa or vacation. It also encourages efficiency, so it’s a good choice for the office or as an accent on your front door.

Yellow is known to enhance one’s intelligence, and (unsurprisingly) communicate happiness. Research shows that it’s not a good choice for a main colour scheme, though, so use it sparingly in entries or halls to send a welcoming vibe throughout your home. It’s also a good colour for your kitchen if you want to catch the sunlight and give your morning a boost.

Meet Dr. Tosoni MD

the Woman at the Epicenter of Ottawa’s Favorite Cosmetic Clinic

f you did not pay attention, you could easily walk by and miss this gem of a clinic. Don’t let the small front window fool you. Located at street level in the Byward Market, amongst Ottawa’s restaurant scene, is located one of the busiest and most prestigious Cosmetic Clinics not only in Ottawa but in Canada: TosoniMD. It has been quite a year already for Dr. Caroline Tosoni, owner and medical director of TosoniMD. First, her Cosmetic Clinic won the Faces Award as Ottawa’s Favorite Cosmetic Clinic for the second year in a row. Second, not only has she maintained her status as Top 1% Cosmetic Injector in Canada for over 10 years, her clinic has now just received Triple Diamond Designation by Allergan. In layman's terms, this means that Dr. Tosoni provides more Botox treatments, more Juvederm filler treatments, Belkyra and Coolsculpting Body Contouring treatments combined than all other clinics in Canada. This Triple Diamond status is achieved only by a handful of cosmetic physicians during their career. Dr. Tosoni is the very first and to date, the only one to have

ever achieved such a high level of accomplishment in the City of Ottawa. When asked how she attributes the success of her cosmetic practice and how TosoniMD differs from other clinics offering similar services, this is what Dr. Caroline Tosoni has to say: ‘’I don’t think there is a magic formula. I think that the success of my business is directly related to my unwavering passion and commitment to what I do. I am dedicated to improving my skills and have done so for over 20 years and I have been fortunate to learn from the very best injectors in the world. I know how to listen to my patients and I am meticulously attentive to detail. Put simply, I am 100% focused on what I do every day.

’Winning the Faces Award again this year was very meaningful to me. It is an award based on the popular vote and in a booming industry where more and more service providers continue to surface, I consider it an honour that people continue to choose to vote for my little clinic above all others. Thank you to all of the voters and to every single one of my patients who trust me and my skills and allow me to practice what I love all day, every day.’’

Dr. Tosoni has the reputation of having an acute artistic eye and always seeks to achieve refined, youthful and natural results for her clients. She is a trusted source of information and has been a regular guest on “My ultimate goal is to achieve the best local television and interviewed by various possible result for every single patient that journalists and bloggers over the years for sits in my chair.” her opinions, knowledge and insight into Medicine. Dating&Relationships

The 4 Biggest Mistakes That people make on first dates

NOT ASKING QUESTIONS Nobodywantstospendtimewith someone that only talks about themselves. A study done by Plenty of Fish, one of the largest global online dating companies, revealed that 74% of people rate good conversation as more important than looks. There needs to be a balance between sharing and genuinely listening. Treat the date like a tennis match; returntheirquestions withanswers andviceversa, andtheadvantage will definitely be in your court!

CHOOSING A BAD LOCATION The wrong venue might totally underwhelmyourdatingpartner, or even worse, result in no second chance. A dark movie theatre or a loudsportsbararenotplacestoget to know someone. Polls done by dating site Zoosk, found that the majorityofsinglesrateddinneror coffeeastheirtopchoicesforafirst date. Go somewhere that is conducive to easy conversation and a good time; dating is supposed to be fun, not like a job interview!

HAVING YOUR PHONE OUT It’s normal to be nervous when meeting someone for the first time, especially a person who you are romantically interested in. And often, looking at your phone is the reaction most people have in awkward situations. However, 88% of singles say they wouldn’t like if their date was using their phone, finds a survey by Mashable on dating habits. So it’s easy enough, if you’re interested in getting to know your date, act like it!

TALKING ABOUT YOUR EX Don’t introduce negativity to a happy and casual first date experience. 49% of singles rated past relationships as the number one conversation killer on a first date, according to expert Melanie Gorman(withdietingandbodyimage coming in at number two). Saying too much too soon invites inaccurate speculation and can give off the wrong impression. Leave your exes where they belong...in the past!

Ottawa born and award-winning performer Kira Isabella

has come a long way since she broke into the music scene at just

16 years old.

So where is that little girl now? Almost a decade later, Kira continues to push the envelope and take chances, doing so with grace and confidence at every turn. We sat down with her ahead of her Valentine’s Day show at Algonquin Commons Theatre with Aaron Pritchett to talk about her bold new direction. She shared with us some of the major milestones she’s seen in 2018, along with details about her new two-part EP “Sides”. At 25, Kira Isabella has established herself as a female country musician, releasing a fresh and mature collection of songs that highlight her powerhouse vocals and fearless attitude.

What are some of your favourite memories of growing up in Ottawa? I love Ottawa so much. No matter where I go, Ottawa will definitely always be home. I think my best memories are all of the singing that I got to do around town. I can honestly say I’ve played at every old age home, every festival: the Tulip Festival, the Ottawa Super X. That’s where I really started my love of performing, and it’s where I met my first vocal teacher. I remember being six years old standing at the Giant Tiger stage watching all of these kids doing karaoke and pulling on my Dad’s hand saying, “I have to do that”.

“All the music on this album really reflects what I’ve been through and my story, and that’s what I want to share with people. It’s who I really am.” When did music really become more than a hobby for you? I think it’s always kind of been more than a hobby. I was very lucky to have incredibly supportive parents who wanted me to be able to sing everywhere I could. I started singing lessons when I was six and did my first performance when I was seven. I remember I sang Mamma Mia and I fell in love with the song. From then on, every weekend I was either in a competition, or singing at an old age home... just going anywhere to get people to listen. You’re currently on tour with Aaron Pritchett and David James across Canada until the end of February. What has been your favourite part of this tour so far? Getting to know Aaron’s camp has been incredible. I keep saying I’ve been learning so much. This is my first tour on a bus, and the longest tour I’ve ever done. I know Aaron is made for this, I can tell he thrives in this kind of environment, and I really feel like I’m made for it too. I feel really blessed to be able to do this forever. Being able to connect with all the packed audiences, and share my new music with them is really cool.

Your EP marks the first time since 2014 that you’ve released a new collection of songs. Side A released in 2018 and now the other half, Side B, was released early January. Tell us about the inspiration behind your new album. It’s been a minute since I’ve put out a body of work. I really wanted to take my time with this, and I was working with a whole new team. The new producer I worked with was really able to take me somewhere vocally I’ve never been able to go; the vocals are more mature, and so is the subject matter. I only wrote one song on it, I Don’t Wanna Know, and I walked out of the room really feeling like a songwriter. The rest of the songs are truly songs I fell in love with, and really loved listening to. They are songs I wanted to sing and stories I wanted to tell. How do you think you’ve grown as an artist and your music has changed since your last album? What do you want fans to hear with this new music? I think in the past couple of years I’ve been through so much; I’ve moved, been through a breakup, and lost people in my family. I’ve been doing this for a while, but now what’s really important to me

FACES MAGAZINE | 71

is to share with people by being open and vulnerable. All the music on this album really reflects what I’ve been through and my story, and that’s what I want to share with people. It’s who I really am. You had the opportunity to open the 2018 CCMA Award show with the Shania Twain tribute, alongside Jess Moskaluke and Madeline Merlo. What was this experience like for you? It was totally surreal. It was really special to get to do the performance with Madeline and Jess because we actually are friends. I really do love those girls and I think we have to keep each other close because we go through a lot of the same experiences. We said it will connect us forever. It was very cool to be able to stand on the stage with Shania, having memories growing up singing the album Up! into my hairbrush in my house in Ottawa. I’ll never forget it. Little Girl, one of your 2018 singles, is such an empowering song and did extremely well on the Canadian charts. What was the inspiration and story behind this song? It’s interesting. I had been back and forth to Nashville and Toronto working on music and in and out of the studio. I had Danger Danger and Handcuffs finished, and my team was figuring out a plan for the first single. Then my manager let me listen to “Little Girl” and we just knew this song was going to be the first single. As a vocalist and a storyteller in country music, songs like “Quarterback” and “Little Girl” only come around once in a while. I feel like it landed in my lap for a reason and I’m so grateful that I get to be a part of people’s lives that relate to that subject matter.

You come across as very confident yet genuine online. How has social media allowed you to develop a relationship with your fans and grow your personal brand? I’ve had a lot of time to reflect on the opportunity I have with my platform, with social media, and with a microphone on stage. I want to be careful with the messages I send out. This is my opportunity to really be honest with people and show them who I am. It’s really cool that we have this platform to say whatever we want or need to say. I still have my insecurities, but I always say the good outweighs the bad on social media. You’ve played lots of cool venues and outdoors festivals, including 2018 Boots & Hearts and 2015 RBC Bluesfest. What is your favourite show you’ve done to date? RBC Bluesfest was such a highlight. Not only was it in Ottawa, and all my friends and family were there, but I got to open for Jason Aldean that night. He’s one of my absolute favourites. I have the poster from that festival in my apartment because it’s such a good memory for me. There’s something about live country music and country fans. They’re so passionate and loyal. Any festival is always a blast. What are your favourite places to go in Ottawa when you’re here? I enjoy going shopping downtown, and going out to eat. I love Pure Kitchen. And everytime I go back home I really try to make the rounds and visit all my friends. Who would be a dream collaboration for you and why? It’s been really fun getting to sing with Aaron Pritchett. I think we sound really good together. I just re-released “We Should Be Together”, now with Levi Hummon. Adding Levi’s talent to this bonus version has made me love this song even more. We really hope fans enjoy it as much as we do. What’s next for you in 2019? I’m really excited to get in there with my band and hear their ideas for all of the arrangements for the music. I’ll probably be spending lots of time doing rehearsals to get ready for the summer. And just looking forward to sharing new music with everyone.

5 TAX TIPS

OUTSIDE THE BOX! Now is the time to plan for tax savings in 2019 and beyond. Combining proven and prudent tax planning with sound investment management can make a big difference to your wealth. Here are five lesser known tax strategies to help you do just that. 1) Perhaps you are selling your business, stock options or getting a large inheritance?

Want more good news? The interest rate is prescribed by CRA and is only 2% at this time and set for the life of the loan. 2) Limited Partnership/Flow Through Resource Funds offer tax deductions anywhere from 95% to 150% depending on province of residency.

while working or $76,000 when receiving Old Age Security (OAS), the tax savings can be rewarding.

Tips from A Trainer How to Burn Calories (Without spending hours on the treadmill)

1

We all know that exercise is important. and if weight loss is the goal, then calories have to be burned. You could jump on a cardio machine for the next hour, OR, you could try one of these alternatives. Each of these will cut down your workout time (30 minutes a day is all you need!) and burn calories during and after your workout.

2

Prime

Movements The body was made to do 6 primal movements: squat, deadlift, pushup, row, chin up, lunge. These movements are all multijoint, meaning they require actions from multiple joints (squat = hips, knees, and ankles). Multiple joints means many muscles moving. The more muscles we are moving, the more energy we require. Calories are just energy, so if we are performing movements that require a lot of energy, then we are burning a lot of calories.

LIFT

With this, make sure you have excellent technique before you start to load up the plates. Lifting heavy with poor technique only leads to injury.

3

HEAVY

Doing a squat, deadlift, row, etc. with heavy weights will not only require energy for the muscles, but it will also require a lot of energy for the brain. After all - your brain is the one sending the message to get those muscles to contract! The stronger the message, the more energy required.

Riley Pearce

COMBINE

MOVEMENTS

One of my favourite ways to burn a few extra calories and save time is to combine movements. Try this one for a great lower body burn and I bet it’ll get your blood pumping! Grab a light kettlebell or dumbbell and perform a single leg deadlift. When you return your raised foot to the floor, bring the weight to the shoulder, and step back into a reverse lunge, step forward, bring the weight down again and repeat.

UP the reps

AND LOWER THE REST

A great way to burn tons of calories, increase your heart rate, and decrease your time in the gym is to up the number of repetitions you perform and shorten your rests between exercises. Working in the 15 - 20 rep range is sufficient, but be sure that the weight is appropriate for that rep range. Your rest intervals shouldn’t be any longer than 30s at this many reps. Try to do 3-4 sets at this rep and rest recommendation.

SOLID STRENGTH

TRAINING PROGRAM For the final recommendation I simply suggest to get yourself on a good strength training program. Not only are there a multitude of health benefits for both men and women, but a good strength training session will have you burning calories for up to 36 hours after the workout. It takes a lot of energy to repair the muscles and recover after a weight lifting session. Research has also shown that when we spend a long time on cardio machines and burn a lot of calories doing so, our body adjusts our metabolism afterwards and actually slows it down to conserve energy before we have to jump on the treadmill again. Strength training causes the body to spend its rest days increasing metabolism, and making itself stronger and more efficient so that it can lift weights more easily next time.

THE KETOGENIC DIET WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

What is it? A ketogenic diet is one that switches your body’s primary source of energy from carbohydrates to fats. This happens by restricting dietary carbohydrates to the point that your body opts to break down fatty acids into 'ketones' for energy instead. A ketogenic diet typically requires a split of 70-75% of total daily calories from fat sources, 20% from protein and less than 10% coming from carbohydrates.

Benefits Can accelarate fat loss

Notes for Training •

Clients may note a temporary decreases in strength and muscular endurance until nutritionally adapted.

Need to drink more water and take in electrolytes since the ketogenic diet is inherently diuretic

A very good diet for endurance athletes

High intensity interval training (HIIT) or training fasted can get your body into ketosis quickly.

Decreases stress and anxiety Improves cognition and neurological health Increases physical and mental endurance Decreases blood pressure Lowers “bad cholesterol”

How to calculate what to eat? Follow these guidelines: • minimum 70% of total calories per day from fats • 20-25% of total calories per day from protein • Limit carbohydrates to <10% of total calories, fiber is not included in this calculation

ANS Performance makes the KETOSYS Series of Ketogenic Lifestyle products which include:

KETOSYS - keto meal replacement shake KETOVITA - BHB ketones + essential vitamins & electrolytes KETOMATE - zero sugar high fat flavoured coffee creamer

NOTE: Protein & Carbohydrates provide 4 cal/g, while fats are more energetically dense and provide 9 cal/g.

The point of having a dry month is to kick alcohol from your system for a while, and let your body clear away those toxins. But much more than that, cutting alcohol from your week’s plans helps you to save your energy for some of that spring cleaning bucket list, find a new clarity of mind, and may just be the break in routine you need to kickstart a better lifestyle. UNCOMFORTABLE CONVERSATIONS

POLITICS, RELIGION, AND THE TERMS OF YOUR EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT WHEN STARTING A NEW ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIP, there are specific topics that are generally understood to be best avoided. Some examples include:

How much you dislike your ex;

Politics and religion;

Money; and,

How soon they are looking to get married.

These topics can be very personal, and the inherent fear is that the relationship will start off on the wrong foot (or go nowhere at all).

GETTING LEGAL ADVICE ON NEW EMPLOYMENT CONTRACTS The world of employment relationships is not that all that different. It is not unusual for clients to confess that they would much rather take a contract “as is” and hope for the best instead of having what they fear will be an awkward conversation about the terms of an employment contract.

It is true that, like a first date, some topics are best avoided during your initial conversations with a prospective employer. There is wisdom in not ranting about how much you hate your former employer. Likewise, discussions about politics, religion, and sex are typically best avoided during the early interview stage and as a safe rule perhaps best left out of the employment relationship altogether. However, when it comes to employment, discussing topics like money and the rules around how the relationship between employee and employer will come to an end if (when) the time comes are necessary conversations.

The problem is, for many people, talking about these topics feels impolite, awkward, and out of character. Bringing in a lawyer is about as off-putting to some as inviting your parent on a first date. Prospective employees are often concerned that they will seem aggressive, combative, and worry the contract will be withdrawn. For some, even consulting a lawyer can seem disloyal; the idea of telling their prospective employer that they would like to get legal advice feels like inviting certain disaster.

HERE ARE REASONS TO GO AHEAD AND GET THAT ADVICE ANYWAY: This is an opportunity to make sure you understand your rights and obligations (including possible post-employment obligations such as non-solicitation agreements) before you sign. You may still decide that you will not request changes, but at least you are walking into the relationship fully aware of what you are agreeing

In the event changes are needed, an employment lawyer can often provide guidance on how to negotiate modifications to your contract in a constructive and nonconfrontational way. We understand that you are looking to preserve your relationship and not end it — in our experience, employers are often open to negotiating the terms of the agreement. The purpose of the agreement is to help both parties arrive at conditions that are fair (and provide some certainty). Discretion — no one needs to know that you sought legal advice. Lawyers can often provide assistance without getting directly involved. Finally, sometimes what you will learn is that the employer is offering a very fair, wellbalanced contract that provides certainty to both parties. This knowledge can help build trust and loyalty from the beginning.

Our team of lawyers work with both employees and employers and can assist with drafting, reviewing, and negotiating the terms of employment contracts.

The way certain clauses are drafted, like termination clauses, can make a significant difference to how smoothly you are able to transition to a new opportunity if your employment comes to an early end. It is not uncommon for people to only read their termination clause for the first time after they were let go and that they wished they had understood the terms earlier.

GRACE LACHANCE

ONCE I STARTED VIEWING MYSELF AS A WRITER WHO HAPPENS TO SING, RATHER THAN A SINGER WHO HAPPENS TO WRITE, THE QUALITY OF MY SONGS SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED.

What are your favourite memories from growing up in Ottawa? There are so many. I would have to say that most of my memories are with the people that I’ve been fortunate enough to have met here. Ottawa and especially Stittsville, where I live, is a pretty tight-knit community. Growing up here has been incredible. I have loved performing at Ottawa Bluesfest. Performing on stage always gives me a huge adrenaline rush. It’s amazing to have so many people come out to support my career... I am very lucky. When did you get into music and what got you hooked? I started singing at around age 3. I started writing songs when I was 9 and I picked up the guitar at 11. One way or another, music will always be a part of my life. I don’t think that there was anything in particular that got me hooked. It was instinctive for me from the beginning. You really got your start after winning RBC Bluesfest’s contest She’s the One,in 2015, which led to you releasing your first single under Universal Music Canada. You’ve come a long way since then - what has the experience been like working with various musicians and producers along the way? The experience has been unbelievable. There are so many lessons that I have learned as both an artist and as a person in general. At age 15, I trusted my singing abilities, but I had not yet had the chance to explore other aspects of music. Now, I trust my instincts, I trust my ear and I understand that I have abilities within

music that extend beyond just singing. Once I started viewing myself as a writer who happens to sing, rather than a singer who happens to write, the quality of my songs significantly improved. The musicians and producers that I have worked with along the way have helped to strengthen my mindset and to inspire these changes. Julie Kathryn, who produced the majority of my EP, has been a real mentor for me. She welcomed every idea with enthusiasm and she pushed me to trust my instincts, even when they seemed eccentric. Every day in the studio was a creative challenge and that was my favorite part about the creation of this EP. Your debut EP album was just released in February. How would you describe your new music? The inspiration for the songs come from the name of the EP, “When Lightning Strikes”. The title suggests that this EP is a new and perhaps unexpected energy. Each song is a response to my life and my experiences. When lightning strikes, it’s a culmination of energy that eventually combusts. I think most importantly, it’s not the calm; it’s the storm. I would describe my new music as layered and punchy with singer-songwriter tones and urban blend mixes. My new music is still within the realm of pop, but it’s darker thematically. We know you’re a big fan of jiu-jitsu. Tell us the story behind your martial arts themed video “Strong”, released in January. Yes, I’ve been doing martial arts since I was 5 or 6. I will admit that originally, I was very skeptical about being filmed doing martial arts. After

Grace Lachance exudes fearlessness. At just 18 years old, this Stittsville singer-songwriter is very much an artist on the rise. After winning RBC Bluesfest’s contest She’s The One back in 2015, Grace has wasted no time fine-tuning her skills and making the most of every opportunity she is given. With a new EP just released in February, and a huge network of support, Grace has plans for 2019 to be another year of hard work and success.

doing some more thinking, I came to the conclusion that “Strong” is an empowering song which marks a coming of age. I needed to push myself and attempt something that felt slightly out of my comfort zone. This song is important to me since it’s a reminder that it’s not vain to understand our own strength; it’s rather important in acknowledging our own ability to influence change, both within ourselves and outwardly as well. This song was a chance to showcase something unique. I was able to do the only other thing that I feel is just as ingrained in me as music which was great. What’s your favourite local venue to play shows at? Ottawa Bluesfest for sure! Bar Robo, Quitters, and Live on Elgin are some other venues that I really love. What’s the best advice you’ve been given in terms of reaching your goals with music? I remember a few years ago I was telling my great-grandma about how I was worried about making a mistake at a live performance. I went on to say that it wouldn’t be a big deal if I made a mistake on stage since there wouldn’t be a huge crowd. My great-grandma said that if I wanted to succeed at anything in life, everything had to be a big deal. She said that as soon as you consider something as “not a big deal”, you automatically set yourself up for failure. Since then, every opportunity has been a big deal for me. Both in music and in life, that was a piece of advice that has really stuck with me.

I NEEDED TO PUSH MYSELF AND ATTEMPT SOMETHING THAT FELT SLIGHTLY OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE.

What are your goals for 2019, and what’s next for you? I always try to consider goals in a broad sense. In 2019, I want to work as hard as I can and hopefully succeed to whatever extent I can manage. Truthfully, I never know what’s next for me as things always have the potential to change so quickly and drastically. I am also a very unpredictable person so it’s hard to know for sure where I’ll be next month, let alone next year. @Grace_Lachance

STE VEN PA GE

Steven Page was recognizable for more than 20 years as the frontman for Canada’s rock band, the Barenaked Ladies, recently inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. Now he is out on his own, paving a successful solo career. He just released his fifth solo album, Discipline, which is an insightful and confident breakthrough of evolution. Page accepts who he is and what he stands for, delivering music that highlights just that. He continues to head in a direction that we’ve never seen him before, and it’s safe to say we’re grateful to have sat down with him ahead of his Ottawa show to discuss where he is at in this stage of his career.

“Discipline is all about accepting and stating who you are.”

You’ve been making music for many years. How did you get your start?

Any favourite things to do when you come to Ottawa? Favourite memories from spending time in the city?

I never thought I was good enough at anything. I started singing when I was 18 with Ed Robertson, and that changed everything. When we started writing and harmonizing together, it showed me what I was capable of, and made me fall in love with music.

Ottawa has kind of been home base. I remember in 1990 when we would play at Cafe Deluxe in the market and then we’d drive overnight to Toronto to do a show the next day. And of course doing the Tom Green radio shows way back was always a great time. I have so many memories in Ottawa and I’m still in and out of that airport very frequently.

Your 5th solo album just came out in the fall and is the sequel to Heal Thyself, Pt. I. What’s the story behind splitting the album up? It was a lot of material, and I felt there was too much for my audience to digest in one bite. And, selfishly, I split it into two halves because there are no guarantees that a new record is not just going to disappear in a week. I thought splitting it up would compliment each other. The new album brings your dark humour to political discourse, personal experience, and has differences in terms of language. You’ve called it the most forceful musical statement of your solo career. What kind of feel were you going for with Discipline: Heal Thyself, Pt. II? The first record, Heal Thyself, Pt. I: Instinct, is about questions of self. It looks at the value of being a musician and being able to call yourself that. The second half, Discipline, is all about accepting and stating who you are. It’s honest and insightful, really stating where you’ve come from. It’s not just standard rock and roll. You use your voice for more than just music by expressing powerful opinions through song, especially in your lead single White Noise. How does music help you to speak out on political issues? I like to leave a lot of grey areas by not necessarily being concise. In doing that, it leaves room to grow and change my mind about the meaning in songs. I’m not always picking a side. I’m admitting that I’m open to not knowing. It’s a lot like parenting... I don’t always know the answer; I know things based on my own experience, but I can’t give a concrete answer. In my music, I like to leave that grey area for interpretation. Your tour kicks off May 1st at the NAC in Ottawa. What can fans expect from this show and what is your favourite part about touring? The tour is with the Steven Page Trio, so I’m up there alongside Craig Northey and Kevin Fox. I’ll be on guitar and piano. It’s a lot of fun working together with the three of us. It’s not stressful at all, it’s just effortless. We’re grown ups, doing what we love, and the shows are truly the best part.

What is your favourite song off Discipline to play live? This has actually surprised me but Feelgood Summer has been so great. It’s very optimistic and I think fans have really been loving it. Another fun one has been Looking for the Light. The Barenaked Ladies were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame last year, and got together for a show at the Juno Awards of 2018. What was it like playing with the guys again? It was totally natural. There was a great energy in the room, and it was like no time had passed. There was that sense of anxiety, wondering if we would have that same connection. But we did, with lots of laughing, and it was fun. You and Ed Roberston got together in 1988, and quickly became Canadian icons. What was a career highlight during your time with the band? I mean of course there’s those benchmarks, like playing at Madison Square Garden and those major highlights of reaching success in your career. But for me, it was winning over those small audiences with the spirit of the band. We had so many great highlights but seeing that change in energy in an audience when you’ve really captured them was what I remember best. What’s something your fans would be surprised to learn about you? Any hidden talents or hobbies? I think my fans know this, but I love to cook. I also think this is no surprise but I’m afraid of most animals and the outdoors. After your tour winds down at the end of May, then what’s next for you in 2019? I’ll be working on new music, doing a US tour in June and then preparing for summer festivals.
