Garth Brooks Trisha Yearwood

When the best-selling solo artist in U.S. history (and one of the best of all time) makes a tour stop in your city, you know you are in for a treat. When he tours with his best friend and wife, Grammy-winning sensation Trisha Yearwood, you can prepare yourself for absolute greatness. Don’t believe us? Check out the demand for shows on each of the tour stops. Forget the other cities with double-digit shows and just look to Ottawa with 4 sold out shows.

FACES had the fortunate opportunity to speak with the country legends during their time in Ottawa. Not afraid to show emotion, the pair talked about the current tour and what it has been like for them to be back in Ottawa. We knew Garth and Trisha would deliver one heck of a performance, but it blew our expectations out of the water. The energy delivered was phenomenal and delighted the crowd. It was a show that won’t be easily forgotten by Ottawa. Garth, how did your hit, “Friends in Low Places”, come to be, and what was it like to see it be such a success?
Garth: The song was written by Dewayne Blackwell and Earl Bud Lee and the story is that they both hit the same place on an afternoon and they both forgot their wallets. Earl Bud Lee says, “Don’t worry, I got it ‘cause I got friends in low places”. The story goes that Dewayne Blackwell wrote on a napkin, “Blame it all on my roots, I showed up in boots, and ruined your black tie affair” and slid it over, and rumour has it that they were done with the song in 10 minutes. I can’t imagine my life without the song. I did the demo for the song, they wanted to pitch it to George Strait, and I was the Strait in that town – I loved George and I knew how to do all the inflections he could do, so they hired me to sing it for George. I don’t know if he ever heard it, but we got a record deal around the same time and we were lucky enough to have it. Do you both have any pre-show rituals? Garth: Well I think everyone has his or her own good luck charms. Trisha: I have one that you (Garth) don’t know about that is kind of funny. When I get ready to come out on stage and you’re in the middle of a show...” Garth: See I asked you this (Trisha) last week what you do while I am on stage and you didn’t tell me (laughs).

6 | May 2016

Trisha: Well, this is right before I come
on stage, not in the dressing room when
I’m getting ready. I mean after I’ve gotten Garth ready, done his hair and make-up and wardrobe, then I get ready (laughs). But I have this ritual, which I realized in Hamilton, when I am getting ready to come up on stage and I am still under the stage, they hand me the microphone and I have to see Brad – who runs everything – I have to see his face and know he is down there before
I can go up. So if he’s not visible I have to crane around and see him and then when I do I know everything will be fine. Little silly superstitions. Garth: Ever since we got Brad, and he has been with us for 27 years, I’ve had to fist bump him every time before I go up. The most famous time I can remember is Central Park, because I remember him fist bumping me and asking, “You okay, boss?” cause I was white, and I mean whiter than usual white (laughs). It’s funny that we kind of have the same thing. Trisha: I think we also don’t like to be ready too far ahead of time and waiting because that is when I get nervous. If I am dressed and ready to go and I’ve got 15 minutes to wait, it’s not good. So it will look like I’m never going to make it to stage, painting my fingernails walking out there, but it’s somehow subconsciously on purpose because I don’t want to be waiting. Trisha, what was it like for you portraying “Mary” in the highly acclaimed live show, “The Passion”?
Trisha: Overwhelming. I’ve said before that when I agreed to do the part in “The Passion” I wasn’t thinking so much about the role, I was thinking what a cool risk, to be a part of this live event, and it wasn’t until a few days later that it really sunk in that I agreed to play Mary, Mother of Jesus. I just thought to myself,“What were you thinking?” And Garth can tell you, because he was with me those 3 months, that I was really nervous because the songs were out

of my comfort zone; they were stratospheric vocally, and I was nervous about if I was to get a cold. Normally I could sing through a cold, but not for these songs. I will usually tell Garth that he doesn’t have to come with me for these things, but this time I said, “I need you”. I needed him to be with me and he was, and it was an amazing experience. One of the most incredible things I’ve ever gotten the chance to do; I loved it. I think that the reason that I ended up enjoying myself so much was that I finally just got out of my own way; I told myself to stop trying to think, “Can Trisha Yearwood hit the notes?”, “What am I going to look like in the dress?” I realized this is not about me; this is about trying to get a message across, so I let it all go and it was good. Garth: You didn’t ask me what it was like for me yet – do you have any idea what it was like to be married to Trisha Yearwood and then all of a sudden she is Mary, Mother of God? (Laughs) I was very proud of her. How did you enjoy the performance, Garth? Garth: Fantastic, cried the whole time; because she was great but also because of the story too. I was so proud that somebody in this day and age takes the time to stand up, because we can talk about the Bible all day long for people for who the words “God” and “Jesus” just gives them something. Just go in the Bible and every time you see the word “God” or “Jesus” just write, “love” above it. We took time to talk about loving one another and forgiving one another. I think the whole world could use a little more love.

“That’s what you want as a songwriter, you want to get that moment where you can make people laugh while they cry, or cry while they laugh.”

Trisha, after this performance have your dreams to one day be on Broadway grown? Trisha: Having survived it, when I got to that Monday and it was all done it was a little bittersweet. I had just wanted it to go well and it did and I was kind of sorry that it was over. It gave me another level of confidence that I like to do different things, so hopefully something will come along one of these days, but I would have to convince the cowboy over here to live in New York for 6 months and I don’t know how that will go! (Laughs) Trisha, you have written several cookbooks and host your own cooking show. What is your favourite meal to cook at home? Trisha: I do a lot of casseroles at home because if we are home for 3 or 4 days then I can make one on Monday and we can hopefully not devour it in 2 days (laughs). Garth likes lasagna; I make black bean lasagna that he really likes. I like to change it up. This week I did a sweet potato burger that has garbanzo beans in it, basically a no meat burger that he loves as well. It varies on what we are in the mood for like with everybody! What have the highlights from this tour been for you thus far? Trisha: There’ve been so many! The coolest thing is that there are about 50 of us on tour, which is actually pretty small for a band and

“I needed him to be with me and he was, and it was an amazing experience. One of the most incredible things I’ve ever gotten the chance to do, I loved it.” crew for a tour of this size, and we are just tight. When I start introductions on stage I say we really are a family (and I’m sure a lot of people just say that when they are introducing their band but don’t really mean it (laughs)), but we truly are a family. It’s been a fun tour but a grueling tour, we are doing 2 shows a night in some cities, it’s a lot of shows, so that makes us bond even closer. Just the joy of this whole tour, I’ve said it before but when I walk out tonight, and when I watch Garth on stage when I’m not out there yet I watch the crowd and I just see joy and happiness. It’s people escaping whatever is going on in their lives or in the world for 2 hours who get a chance to come in and just sing along and be with who they love – that’s been the coolest thing. What is your favourite song to perform live? Trisha: That’s a tough one! People in Hamilton brought signs for “Broken”, the Lifehouse song I covered in “The Passion”. That song is really up there, so I was thinking I probably wasn’t going to do that live, but then the signs came! The energy that the song is creating has been really awesome, so that’s my favourite right now. We will see if there is a sign out there tonight! (And there was – and she nailed it!)

Trisha, tell us about your very first performance in your career. Trisha: My first professional performance was opening for Garth actually in 1991 and it was at a fair and I was terrified. “She’s In Love with The Boy” was out and it was the only song that people would have remotely known of mine and I think I had a 20-minute set. I was a session singer until then so I wasn’t used to performing in front of a crowd, I was just used to being in a studio with my hair in a ponytail, no make-up and a microphone. So I was terrified and he was

Garth: “Callin’ Baton Rouge” hands down. You’ll see tonight that it’s such a fun song and it’s so alive because it’s short, and it’s chaotic and it’s placed in such a great part of the show that it kind of brings everybody back to the beginning, so it’s a wonderful thing. It also kind of gives you the energy to get through the rest of the show with the crowd. It’s a great song, it never gets old, and Jimmy Mattingly is on the fiddle and I could just listen to him play all day.

great about saying, “You can use the whole stage”, and I was like “I don’t want to use the whole stage, I don’t know what to do!” (Laughs) It was kind of baptism by fire for me. I didn’t grow up singing in the clubs and learning my way that way – I went from session singing to opening for the biggest act in country music, so it was terrifying (laughs), but I learned and I figured it out! How does it feel to have such great success with this tour that you are adding so many extra shows due to demand? Garth: Well I gotta ask you, how would it make you feel? (Laughs) You know raising children I think the thing that you want to feel is love. Being loved means you are wanted, you feel like you are making a difference in somebody else’s life. That’s how this makes you feel. It makes you feel like these people are interested enough to go through the crap they have to go through to get a ticket and to come here. Having to put on a second on-sale is really very sweet. When enough people were disappointed that they didn’t get a ticket, you want to fix that. Tell us about the process you go through when creating lyrics? Garth: I think it all depends on what the song is, and what the song’s goal is. If the song’s goal is to make you think, then it is going to be a very different process than writing a song that makes you chuckle. What I have found is that when I am crying, if I am watching a movie and crying – take “Steel Magnolias”, when she lost her daughter, being a parent myself, that killed me. When she says “I just want to hit something” and she grabs Weezer and says, “Hit Weezer” I started laughing so hard – and now you are laughing while you’re crying which is the greatest thing. That’s what you want as a songwriter, you want to get that moment where you can make people laugh while they cry, or cry while they laugh. If you had to choose one song that is the most significant to you, what would it be, and why? Garth: Ooh tough, tough. Let’s pick “The Dance”, because it speaks for me as an artist. The crazy thing is, I’ve been to enough funerals and enough graduations in which the song all of a sudden starts playing and I’m thinking, “Oh, well that’s cool!” It speaks for a lot of people – and I can say this because I didn’t write it - but it is one of the greatest written pieces of all time, of country music and all music. I’d also throw in there, “People Loving People”, “We Shall Be Free” and “The Change” – all these songs that push tolerance, and help to steer your own ship and help keep that confidence and that, stubbornness, if you will, if you believe you are right and stay on your path. Jacob Hoggard of

HEDLEY Canadian Multiplatinum Rock Stars

10 | May 2016

Jacob Hoggard is the lead singer of multiplatinum rock band, Hedley. They recently released their sixth studio album, “Hello”, with Jacob being credited as writer, producer, and creative director for the album. The band is known for their catchy lyrics and unique music that makes you want to sing along and dance. Hedley kicked off their Hello World Tour on April 7th, 2016 and visited Ottawa on April 23rd. FACES had the opportunity to talk to Jacob Hoggard about the band’s dynamic, their constantly evolving music, and what fans can look forward to on their tour across Canada.

What was it like living in Abbotsford, BC? Did you always know you wanted to be a singer? I basically grew up in Vancouver and, when I quit school at 17, moved to Abbotsford to get into construction because that was my life decision. I wanted to be a carpenter so I left the city and moved into the suburbs to build houses. Somewhere along that path, I started a band. What was the experience like being on Canadian Idol? That experience was certainly life changing. It was a whirlwind; I couldn’t imagine having a faster summer than the one I had that year. Literally, going from packing lunches, smoking cigarettes, and building houses to performing live on national television. It was a resounding whirlwind experience, and, in a lot of ways, it changed me for the better. It changed my life path and the path I was on and I’m really grateful for it. I think in a lot of ways I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing if it wasn’t for my mom, who forged all my signatures on the Canadian Idol application (laughs). I owe her all the glory. Hedley has been together since 2005, what’s the chemistry like with the band? Tolerance! We really built a bond over the last few years. The hardest part of being in a band is being together. Over the years we’ve had our ups and downs and we’ve been there for each other through very significant life experiences. Whether it be having a baby, or buying a house, or surviving cancer, there’s just no limit to what we’ve been through as a band together. It’s that bond we have and, at this point, it’s unbreakable. We’re a brotherhood and we’re a family. I think that’s why we have as much fun as we have nowadays, it’s not just because of what we’ve been through, but about knowing how lucky we are to be where we’re at and doing what we’re still doing together after all of these years. I’m really proud of all of us for staying the course and it’s something I know lot of people can’t say they’ve accomplished. You are known for your philanthropic work with Free the Children and have travelled to India, East Africa, and Ecuador. What does it mean to you to be able to do this work? For us, being involved in that capacity is a responsibility. As a band, and members of our community, we have that responsibility to be able to contribute and give back to a community that’s supported us throughout the years. Hedley released their 6th studio album in November. What were some of your inspirations for the album and especially the hit, “Hello”? For me, this album was a real quest for honesty, creativity and doing it the way Hedley does.

A lot of people may get to a point where they can feel exhausted creatively, but I’m thankful that hasn’t been our experience. I feel like we attribute that to our consistency and our ability to really dig deep and to really be honest in our creative process. You really need to be able to open yourself up to go deep, to look deep within yourself and where you’re at personally. It makes a big difference in the way you write and the way you create. I think this album was a real challenge in that respect, to maintain that honesty and to be able to look deep. You have been nominated for 2 Juno Awards this year and have taken home many awards in the past. Tell us about how this ride has been for the band. The Juno Awards have always been an important part of our lives – being Canadian, travelling the world and being proud of our country and its music scene. They’ve always been a huge part of our lives and having that recognition from the community has always been so groundbreaking for us. It was always
a real positive affirmation in our lives of our community recognizing us for what we do and how hard we work. It really motivates the band and it’s a great thing for artists to be able to be a part of. It has motivated us to continue recording, touring, and putting on shows, which has become our favourite part of the job. The tour and the act is really where we find our true selves; it’s who we really are and I think that’s what we’re most proud of - our live shows. We always put everything we have into our live shows and the experiences we create with our fans as a result. Are there any favourite spots you go to while in Ottawa, and what do you look forward to seeing or doing while you’re here?
There’s a taco place called El Camino’s! It’s amazing. I love El Camino’s. You’ll probably find me there. Other than making sweet love to the city of Ottawa, we’ll probably keep it pretty chill. What is your favourite song to perform and why?
I have so many favourite songs to perform,
but what makes a song a favourite for me is
the crowd’s reaction. The reason I have so
many favourite songs is because our fans have such strong reactions. My favourites are the songs that I love and our fans love. A song like “Sweater Song” is probably one of my all-time favourites just because of the story behind it, and because of the reaction that our fans have to it. How do you feel your music has evolved over the years? Ferociously. A huge part of the creative process is making that evolution and making sure that

you continue to evolve. As individuals we’re changing all the time – we change daily, we change weekly – so on a creative level, it’s so important to be aware of that and be true to that. Over the years, with the risks we’ve taken musically, we’ve found ourselves again and again. It’s a very organic process because of our willingness to take risks and push ourselves forward into new musical avenues and new contexts that we’ve never tried before. Back in the day, from our first pop punk album to all of a sudden writing a piano song called, “For the Nights We Can’t Remember”, it’s a perfect example of our transition and all of a sudden people say, “Well, that doesn’t sound like Hedley,” and then us replying, “Well, we sound like Hedley and this is what Hedley sounds like now.” It’s that philosophy that we’ve embraced over the years and continue to use to our advantage. It really opens up door, after door, after door as long as we are willing to continue taking those risks and push ourselves. Does the band have any pre-show rituals? We do a full naked UFC cage-bash and we’re actually now selling tickets to it, you can buy them online (laughs). I’m kidding! Are there any bands you would love to tour with in the future? I would love to tour with a band called “The War on Drugs”, they are amazing. I’ve been listening to them a lot lately, and I wouldn’t want to tour with them as much as I would love to follow them around and watch them play. I really love their vibe and it’ll be the soundtrack to my summer, for sure. What can Ottawa fans look forward to on your tour? We are doing more music than we’ve ever played for almost two hours; we’ve got over 22 songs and we’re literally playing music from every single album! We’re going to be cramming it into this one. We’re excited about it because of how much we’re putting into it. Our fans can basically expect a time travel experience because we’re going to be taking them on a journey through every moment of our lives.

What is something your fans don’t know about you? That’s a tough question because I feel like we’re pretty open with our fans. Maybe they don’t know that I sometimes reuse my underwear all too often. But, then again, maybe that is something they already know! I feel like I’m such an open book. They also might know, but just in case they don’t, my grandma just turned 80, and in case my fans don’t know, I love her so much! I do want to add that I expect to see everyone at our absolutely insane show! Our line-up with Francesco Yates and Carly Rae Jepsen is shaping up to be one of the most exceptional tours we’ve ever put together! Twitter: @JacobHoggard @Hedleyonline

“As an artist you are always growing yourself and your sound – you can’t stay stagnant.”

Getting Real with Country Music Star

Easton Corbin Looking at photos of Easton Corbin you might not expect a deep country voice, but as soon as you hear it you know he was meant to sing. Touring with big names such as Blake Shelton, Brad Paisley and currently, Carrie Underwood, Corbin is showing the country music world that he has what it takes. Corbin’s debut album was released in 2010 and the album grossed the highest first week sales that the label (Mercury Nashville) had had in 7 years. On his debut album Corbin was also the first artist

Looking back on your career, who was most influential in shaping your sound during the early days? I grew up loving Merle Haggard, George Jones and Keith Whitely; I loved those guys for their sound and the type of music that they made – if I could be anybody it would be one of those guys (laughs). Tell us about your newest album, “About To Get Real”, and how you found that sweet spot between mixing contemporary country with the traditional sounds you love so much. “About To Get Real” will be my third record and it is definitely different than my last two. As an artist you are always growing yourself and your sound – you can’t stay stagnant. You have to continue to re-invent yourself, for lack of better terms. I think this record shows my growth because there are some songs that I think I pushed the envelope on in terms of my own sound and my own voice – which is a pretty country voice (laughs) – but you need to do that to develop and grow as an artist. Tell us about the 3 songs you co-wrote on your new album and how does it feel to be able to contribute so many of your own ideas? You know it’s really awesome to be able to go into the studio and be really creative and write your own music; I just love the process. There’s just something about it that feels really good to be able to put your ideas on paper and put music to them. For me, when I am choosing songs it’s not just about the songs that I have that I think we should cut, its not just about what I think, it’s about the song. What’s your favourite song off of your new album that you’re excited for everyone to hear?
I am excited about all of them but there is definitely one on there that is very special to me, and that one is called “Are You With Me?”. It’s funny because the song was actually on my last record, but it’s one of those songs that is just so special that it needs a chance to be a single, so I decided to pull it from my last record and put it on this one as well. My buddy called me a few

in 17 years to have 2 consecutive singles off the same album reach #1. Corbin has also been nominated for multiple country music awards and has been the winner of several. FACES had the opportunity to talk with Corbin about his music career, newest album and upcoming stop in Ottawa. Corbin will be in Ottawa at the Canadian Tire Centre on May 27th with Carrie Underwood, and we can’t wait to hear that deep country voice.

months back and said, “Hey man, I just heard ‘Are You With Me?’ on the electronic dance mix station!”, and I was like, “What? Are you sure?” and he said he was! I looked it up and it turns out it had been remixed to electronic dance music and was #1 in over 10 countries! It definitely solidified for me that it is a special song that needs to be heard, so it is going to be my next single off of this record which I am really stoked about. What has it been like touring with Carrie Underwood? Well fortunately there won’t be any electronic dance music, just original versions (laughs). It’s been great, her and her whole group have been awesome and more than inviting and welcoming to us. Carrie draws such a big audience as well so it’s a great opportunity for me to expose my music with guys and girls of all ages attending that may be a different audience for me. What do you believe country artists need to do in order to gain longevity in the business? It’s about cutting great music and making what you feel is great music, because it all comes down to the songs in the end. A lot of the new tracks on your album are steel guitar heavy - what attracts you to that sound? I love traditional country music sounds and that is definitely a signature sound in country music so it is all throughout the record. Your music is fun but also has a serious side, tell us about a song that has been inspired by your own personal life. A song I wrote on this record was “Like A Song”, and I definitely think that was inspired by my own personal life for sure. You have achieved a great deal of success already at a young age, what are your next goals you would like to achieve in your career? I think it’s about continuing to be true and honest to yourself, keep doing what you’re doing and make music that you are proud
of and believe in. You need to make a stance to have

a career in this business because it’s tough and you can go away in this industry pretty quick. You just have to continue to put out what you feel is great music and hope that your fans will sing along. You became the first male solo artist in 17 years to have your first 2 singles off an album go to #1. What was it like to achieve that success on your first studio album? It was a dream come true! As a new artist you just hope to get your music played, much less having that kind of success, so it really was a dream come true. Who would you love to collaborate with in the future? Well my heros are Merle Haggard, George Jones and Keith Whitely and 2 of them are already gone and of course Haggard is getting older, he isn’t getting any younger. Haggard would definitely be one of my dream collaborations. Which of the songs you’ve written has meant the most to you? It’s hard to narrow it down to just one, but “Like a Song”, “This Far From Memphis”, and “Leavin’ a Lonely Town” are my favourite three songs that I’ve ever written. What was it like performing the national anthem for your country at the Colt’s season opener last September? It was awesome; it’s a great honour to be asked to perform at an event like that, and to have it be on National TV on top of that was awesome. I was definitely rooting for the team that evening! You’ll be in our city on May 27th, what can Ottawa fans look forward to from the tour? What do you remember most about our city? I’m looking forward to being there and I think I’ll give you some good country music and we’ll have a good time cause that’s what it’s all about. Last time I was there it was the middle of winter, so I definitely remember the cold! (Laughs) Twitter: @eastoncorbin

FEATURES Nichols is a successful country music artist with eight studio albums under his belt, and is known for his catchy hits like “Sunny and 75”, “Yeah”, and “Gimmie That Girl” which all reached #1 on the country music charts. Nichols’ sultry voice has earned him multiple awards, including the Academy of Country Music’s “Top New Male Vocalist”. Currently on tour with Gord Bamford, the two are making a stop in Ottawa on May 23rd and we can’t wait for the show. FACES had the opportunity to catch up with Nichols while he was on the road and talked with him about his career, his family, his newest album and singles, and what we can expect from his show here in Ottawa!

Country Music Artist Comes to Ottawa

At what age did you know you wanted to make a career in the country music industry?
I wanted to be a singer as early as I can remember, probably 3 or 4 years old, but I didn’t know I could make a career out of it. Later on in high school I thought that my life was going to go in one of two directions; I was going to be a musician or I’d try to be a baseball player, but I had more passion about music. Who have been some of your inspirations throughout your career? Musically and career-wise I’d say Merle Haggard and George Strait have been two of my biggest influences. I’ve always admired George Strait’s career and how he’s been able to have longevity and sustain it; I love his music, he’s one of those true cowboy guys that have great country music and great country soul. Merle Haggard, I think, is one of the best singers we’ve ever had. He has that sound that every guy wants to have, that deep baritone voice to tell the story like nobody else. How do you think the country music industry has changed in the last 10 years? I think the biggest change I’ve seen is the delivery of music. The digital world has definitely changed; it’s changed in all genres, but I think country is now progressing more towards digital sales; there are more digital sales in country music now than ever before. I also think music now is progressing so quickly. Trends and fads tend to last a little bit longer, but at the same time, they’re probably also forgotten faster. Country music has gotten blended with a lot of other genres as well so there’s not as much traditional music as there used to be. Looking back on the country era I think traditional music has a significant portion of country listeners, but in the past 5 to 6 years, it has been a little less popular among them. The one thing I’m very encouraged by is that it looks like the future of country music is really strong! That traditional and authentic feel is definitely coming back. You have been fortunate to receive 4 Grammy nominations. What was it like to receive that recognition for your music? It’s cliché, but it’s great to be nominated; it’s a very high honour to be considered in the top 4 or 5 artists in any kind of category. It happened pretty early on, I had a few years in a row of Grammy nominations so it did wonders for my ego! (Laughs) I think it’s a vote of confidence from the music world that I was on the right track and doing something right.

Since my last Grammy nominations, I’ve always tried to make quality music good enough so that even if I wasn’t nominated, I was at least considered for in a place in the music world. What are the best and worst parts about being a country music superstar? I’ll start with the worst part about what I do, which is being away from my family. It’s definitely hard to do. If I could change anything without changing everything, that would be it. I would take my family with me all the time. There are some hard parts about the music business that are a little less important like dealing with personalities and trying to navigate opinions. I think the good parts are getting to experience what you can do with music now. A lot of times we take for granted how music affects people one on one. A lot of times people get lost in how much money they’re making, or how successful they are, or how famous they can get, and I think we forget about the connection we make with people. Over the years, some of the best moments and feelings I ever had was hearing people say, “I lost my dad, or I lost my wife, and this song helped me get through that”, or “one of my favourite wedding songs was this song”, or “this is the song that was played when my baby was born.” It does something to your soul where you feel validated, without money, or without success or without fame. Those are the good parts. I’ve never had a job this long, and I still have a job so that’s a great part, too! You are the only man with 4 ladies in the family. What is it like being the only man in the house? It’s fun! I think there are a lot of emotions in the house (laughs), but I think it’s great. I think God blessed me with a bunch of girls for a reason, and they have certainly tendered my heart. My wife has been working on me for years, but my girls have definitely made me a different person; I consider them in a lot of things I do, mostly everything I do, actually. Having them in my life, and a house full of girls is a blessing. Sometimes it feels like a little bit much (laughs), wish that at least we had a male dog running around but I feel lucky to have them. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Which of your songs do your daughters like to listen to the most? Well, my youngest likes running around the house singing, “Yeah”. My threeyear-old loves “Sunny and 75” - she loves to sing it as close as she can get it. She

can’t get the words just right but gives it all she’s got and I love that about her. My oldest, I don’t know what her favourite is, but she always liked “Gimmie That Girl” and “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off” and I think “Sunny and 75” is probably her most recent favourite. “Crickets” is a fantastic album which has the songs like “Sunny and 75” and “Yeah”, which are both gold-certified #1 hits. Tell us what making the album was like for you. Personally, I think it was a good statement. I went through a label change and I think that was a little bit scary. I have confidence in what I do, but you never know what other people are thinking of you. Thankfully once I got in the studio and we started making music, it felt right and I felt comfortable again and then the rest of the stuff didn’t matter. The music is what is most important. So personally, I think it was a bit of a journey, but it had a lot of value. At the end of the day, we made an album worth buying, in my opinion! Can you tell us a bit about your lyric writing process? It’s pretty simple - tell it like it is, and tell it like you want it to be. Not a whole lot of poetry in country music writing. Although things can be pretty, it’s just about real stories putting them in times and putting them in rhymes. Which of your own songs means the most to you, and why? That’s a hard question to answer. I think over the years a lot of my album cuts have been the most important songs to me on any given record, all the way back to the first one. I’ve got a lot on there that nobody heard on the radio such as “Man With a Memory” and “That Would Be Her”. On the second record I loved “Farewell Party” and “No Time to Cry”; third record, I loved “Just a Little More”, a song I wrote about my own life. There’s a lot of things from each record that are personally close to me that you may not have heard on the radio, but to me, they made the album complete. One of your recent singles, “Freaks Like Me”, is all about being yourself and being comfortable with who you are. How does this song speak to you? I think this song speaks to the old school part of me that’s not sorry for being old school! A lot of my friends are the same way; they like simple things and like things the way they used to be more than the complicated world we live in today. I

think that’s what the song says to me: be who you are, don’t be afraid of it, and don’t be sorry for it. You have partnered with Breathless to bring awareness about IPF, a cause close to your heart. Tell us a bit about how you are working with the campaign. It’s a great campaign and I’m glad to be a part of something that finally offers meaning and purpose to my father passing away in 2002. My dad died of IPF - idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis - which is a rare lung disease that scars the lungs, and some of the symptoms that show up are severe cough and breathlessness. It’s great to be a part of something that offers meaning to what has felt like an empty hole for so many years. When my dad passed away I had never heard of IPF and my family was left with the feeling of, “what just happened?” After 14 years of feeling like that, I feel like there’s finally a way to look forward and you feel positive about other people getting help, and awareness, and treatment for what they are going through. What is something your fans would be surprised to learn about you? I’m a homebody; I don’t get out much. It kind of drives my record label and manager nuts sometimes that I’m not much of an awards show guy. I’d rather watch it at home with my wife. I’ve never been one to go out, I’m kind of a shy guy and like to stay home. You are currently on tour in the U.S and will be making your way to Ottawa on May 23rd. What can fans look forward to on this tour?
In a lot of ways, it’s like getting to know Canada and them getting to know me. I’ve had a lot of experiences in Canada over the years but I’ve never been there full time, and I think it’s a great opportunity for me to experience Canada in a much broader way. I’m looking forward to meeting a lot of Canadian friends and fans I never met before. I am excited to play for crowds that may not know who I am (laughs), and may not give a darn, but I’ve experienced great country fans in Canada before! Twitter: @JoeNichols

f you are, or have been a bride, you have most likely heard of Randy Fenoli, who stars in the hit TLC show, “Say Yes to the Dress”, and in “Randy to the Rescue”. Fenoli discovered his passion and talent for creating clothes when he was only 9 years old. From costume designer, to hairdresser, to make-up artist, to bridal gown designer, to author, Fenoli has made a vast, beautiful mark on the bridal industry and he isn’t finished yet.

One of the best things about Fenoli is that he is incredibly committed to making sure that every bride feels beautiful in her wedding gown. It doesn’t matter the price tag, the designer, or even if he agrees – it is about the bride and how she feels. FACES had the delightful opportunity to speak with Fenoli about his journey through the bridal industry, his book, and advice for brides.

You were actually born and raised on a farm in Illinois, how did you discover your passion for fashion? My mother purchased a sewing machine when I was 9 and she put it in my room, and unfortunately my mother could not sew. She told me not to touch her new sewing machine, good fabric and good scissors. One day, when my mother had gone to work, I got one of her patterns out and made her a dress that she wore to work the following day. I had never touched a sewing machine before, like I said I was 9 years old. Then she came home after that with more patterns and she said, “Could you make me this skirt and can you make me this…?” So, I started sewing for her when I was a young child and that was the very beginning of it. I later on became a costume designer and made costumes for many years. Later I went to school at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) and found my love for bridal. I entered a bridal contest and that’s when that kicked off. When did you know that you wanted to make your career in the wedding industry?
I knew after I entered the contest and I got more involved in the industry. I really didn’t even consider bridal before that because I had only been to two weddings before that contest – my older sister’s and my older brother’s wedding. So I didn’t really have a good grasp on weddings and what was done at them because, at that time, none of my friends were getting married. What is it about the wedding industry that pulled you in, rather than the fashion industry in general? My first love was eveningwear, but really the only eveningwear that was being worn was on the red carpet and those gowns are generally given to celebrities. I looked at that and thought, “That’s a really viable career!” (Laughs). Then I got into bridal and I realized that the wedding gown is the single most important garment a woman will ever wear. Because I love making costumes as well (costumes and eveningwear), being able to combine the two to design the most important garment a woman will ever wear is a very exciting opportunity and a really big deal. You are the recipient of 2 DEBI Awards (Distinctive Excellence in the Bridal Industry), the most prestigious award for bridal designers. What did it mean to you to win? Oh, gosh! At the time it was probably the biggest achievement I ever had. It was really exciting for me, and especially to do it two years in a row. To be honoured by your peers in the bridal industry was monumental. What are some of your favourite memories working as the Fashion Director for Kleinfeld Bridal Salon? I really enjoy working with brides every single day. Being part of a bride’s day by guiding them through

the process, taking away some of their stress and making sure they’re happy and feeling beautiful when they walk out of the salon is amazing. Some of the greatest moments are when I work with a bride that is really memorable. One time, we had a bride who was marrying a gentleman that she met in the V.A. Hospital. He had been deployed overseas and he was in and out of the hospital and they were getting married, which was an incredible experience for me. In 2011 you released your book “It’s All About the Dress”. What makes your book so unique? What I’m most proud of, and something that I was really committed to doing, was to publish a bridal book that didn’t just feature models. Every single other bridal book I looked at featured models. Well, sure, models are going to look great in any dress you put them in, but how is this going to relate to the real woman who’s getting married? I decided to only feature real brides in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s, and from all ethnicities and from sizes 2 to 22. My book is really an invitation for anyone to identify with the people in it and say, “This could be me, and I too could be beautiful on my wedding day.” To do a book that has so much diversity is something that I really strived to achieve. Every single bride in my book is just absolutely stunning and breathtaking. Even in the tensest situations, you are able to come in and calm brides and families down and help guide them on their right path. It seems effortless and natural for you. How do you manage to do this? I think I should probably get a degree in psychology or at least an honourary degree at this point (laughs). I think that after this many years of having brides who have watched the show and watched me work, they listen to me and they come in and realize that I don’t work on commission and don’t push brands. I only have one motive and that is to make sure that the bride looks and feels the most beautiful on her wedding day. I think brides really trust me, and trust is a huge word. Anybody can ask for trust but I think it’s really something that has to be earned. I think throughout my years on “Say Yes to the Dress”, they really see that I’m going to do my best to make sure that they get my honest opinion, and hopefully guide them towards what I feel is the most beautiful. With that being said, I don’t always win that battle (laughs). What do you love most about the bridal industry? I think what I love the most is the realization that this truly is one of the most important days of a woman’s life (up to this point in her life). To be included in this day and this moment where she makes the allimportant decision of what she’s going to wear down the aisle, for me, is a gift. I don’t take it lightly or for granted. I do realize that every show has a beginning and an end, and the show will end someday, but that feeling I get from being able to guide a bride to the right dress is something that will never go away. It’s

“It’s all about getting people together and such a gift, an honour, and a blessing. What advice would you give to brides shopping for their wedding gown? My best advice would be to always choose the dress that makes you feel the most beautiful. I think when you feel beautiful your body language changes – you stand up straighter, your smile gets wider, and this attitude and the way you carry the dress is so completely different than if you don’t feel beautiful in it. It’s not necessarily about the dress; it’s about how you wear the dress. You’ve launched two bridal collections. What was the most difficult part about doing this and what did you try to achieve with your looks? With my bridal collections I always try to make sure that I have a dress for every single woman that comes in within my price point. I always try to have something for every bride within my collection and taste level that was cohesive with my fashion and vision. What is one thing that your fans would be surprised to learn about you? The first thing I do when I come home is put on my sweatpants and my sleeveless t-shirt. They’d also be surprised to know that before I took your call this morning I was outside pressure-washing the side of my house. This afternoon I’m going to get some pots and replant around my pool. People probably see me on TV with a suit, tie and pocket square and that’s me at work, but the real me is when I come home and all that comes off. What are some of your favourite things to do when you make a stop in our city of Ottawa? For me, it’s always about trying to immerse yourself in the culture of where you are. When I go someplace, it’s okay to see and do the touristy things, but I want to know what the people who are living there do every day. I think the last time I was in Ottawa I got to see some of the beautiful architecture there and of course, the Rideau Canal. It’s absolutely breathtaking. Ottawa is such a beautiful city and I’m really excited to be able to come back there again! I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone that comes to the show because there’s something for everyone – not just brides. It’s also about life experiences and it’s motivational. It’s a celebration of love. It’s all about getting people together and celebrating this wonderful thing we call love! Twitter: @RandyFenoli

At only 19 years of age Manjit and her brother, Ravinder, became the youngest brewery owners in the world when they opened their own. The Minhas siblings created just the right mix to help their business soar and have built an extremely successful beer and distillery empire.

FACES had an opportunity to catch up with Manjit to talk about her growing career and how she has been enjoying her time on Dragon’s Den this season.

Manjit has always stayed close to her roots in Calgary, and it is clear she loves her city, family and career. With a clear head on her shoulders Manjit attributes her success to her parents who told her she could do anything, and taught her to live within her means. Joining CBC’s “Dragon’s Den” in 2015, Manjit has quickly become a fan favourite and a force to be reckoned with.

Manjit Minhas What are some of your favourite memories growing up in Calgary, Alberta?
There are so many, and I think a lot of them are weather related due to the location (laughs) but I love that we actually get 4 seasons here. From warm summers with lemonade stands to winters with ice-skating, skiing, snowmen – all those fun things. I think Calgary is really great in the fact that it really does give you a full childhood by going through all of the seasons, which allows you to discover many different sports and activities. As an adult, being somewhere warm sounds great, but not as a child (laughs).

24 | May 2016

You started your first business, Mountain Crest Liquors, with your brother when you were just 19 years old. Tell us a little bit about the experience of starting your own business at such a young age. I think that one of the great things about starting young is that you are naive so you really do believe that you can do anything and everything, and my parents also told that to me growing up. Being young also allows you to jump in with 2 feet because you don’t have any other responsibilities, so if it doesn’t go right, it’s okay. I was 19 and an engineering student, so I could go all in as far as time, energy, money (the little bit I

had) and enjoy it all, and I wouldn’t change that for the world. Can you tell us a bit about how your background in engineering has helped you in your business? Engineering gives you so many great lessons, and the foundation of any business is your math, and in my business the science comes in very handy too due to the manufacturing. People forget that the core of a business is manufacturing to start with, whether it be brewing or bottling or lines and efficiencies, and it all comes back to the math and science in the end. The

engineering background really does give me a strong handle on the chemistry that takes place, the physics, and the understanding of the basics of the manufacturing process, which all helps the bottom line. I don’t think it helps with the marketing (laughs), but I think that is a good thing because our marketing and branding has always been unique to help us stand out and I think that’s an ode to the fact that I didn’t have a business or marketing degree. We think a little bit differently and go with what feels right in our gut. Higher education in general really helps in your business and personal life because it gives you the tools to keep learning and that is one thing that I am doing every day, whether it is learning about finance or accounting or HR, or brewing or bottling or negotiating, and you can’t grow your business when you are not learning. What is it about the brewing industry that you enjoy most?
It’s the product at the end of the day! It’s fun, I’m not selling widgets, I’m making beer that people enjoy when they are relaxing and getting together. It’s a fun product that has so many different varieties so I get to be creative as well. Our newest biggest hit is called White Wolf, which is a white wheat beer, and we have heavy double IPAs and strong beers and light beers and strawberry ales...there is a never-ending variety, it is really all about what our imaginations and brew masters can come up with. The sky’s the limit! Which would you say is your personal favourite out of all the beer, spirits, liquor and wine you have created over the years? That’s kind of a tough one because it’s kind of like choosing one of your kids! Out of our distillery it would have to be our Apple Pie Moonshine, and on the beer side I think it’s a tie between our Boxer Watermelon and our Lazy Mutt Ginger Beer. Aside from the alcohol industry, which industries do you most like to invest in? Are there any industries that you're currently looking to expand into? Since Dragon’s Den I have discovered that I like a lot of things that I have since been itching to

You are one of the few successful business people who do not use investors or shareholders for your companies. Why did you choose to go in this route? We have been lucky enough to reinvest our profits in our own company and grow organically over the last 15 years and my brother
and I have always believed in living within our means, which includes our company. That means buying what we have with cash and growing at a rate that is sustainable for us, and with that comes the ability to make your own decisions. It has been an absolutely wonderful experience for us to be able to stay private and have everything owned by just my brother and me. We can celebrate our success together and we can only blame ourselves for our failures; it’s just us!

really enjoy what you are going to be doing for 70% of your waking hours and if you don’t, you will never find success. Have a passion for what you do and thoroughly enjoy it. The second would be to live within your means; spend what you earn and no more. My parents taught me that and have lived their life that way - it really helps you to go to bed at the end of the day and stay in it for the long run.

After you received an offer to become the newest Dragon on the Canadian T.V. program "Dragons Den", who was the first person you told the good news to? I was at my parent’s house when I got my call, so my parents!

Both you and your brother believe in being socially responsible in all aspects of your business and were the first brewing company to voluntarily put a Management Warning on your cans. What does it mean to you to be socially responsible? At the end of the day we are citizens of this country and this world, and my brother and I really do believe that it is our job to be responsible brewers. We recognize that people will not always consume our product responsibly and it can have adverse effects on people’s lives, and it is our job to make sure that people are reminded of that as often as possible. People should not drink and drive or drink while pregnant, and need to be responsible to themselves, the people around them and our environment. It is important not to turn a blind eye to the effects our business can have on people.

Initially, what were your thoughts on becoming a Dragon? How has the experience been so far?
Funny enough when I got the call I was thinking, “About time!” (laughs). I always loved the show and I knew many of the dragons personally already, so it has been a great experience. I love celebrating entrepreneurship and so I was delighted to be sitting in the chair, being able impart my own knowledge and help young entrepreneurs (and myself) make money. The experience has been fabulous; it’s really about investing in people and I really have had a great time dealing with them and enjoying their growth and helping them along the way. I have learned so much from my fellow dragons because we are all in such different businesses and the experience has been so rewarding on many different levels. I don’t think anybody is prepared for “celebrity-ness”(laughs) but that has been fun too! Everybody in my company has been involved in my deals as well and it has been great to share the experience with them and my family. In your opinion, what is the most critical factor of a business pitch?

What is one thing that the majority of people wouldn’t know about you?
That’s a tough one! These days it feels like everyone knows everything about me no matter where I go! I’m a vegetarian, I played field hockey in high school and I was the MVP for 2 years in a row (laughs).

What's the best piece of advice you would give to a young entrepreneur? Do what you love and you will find success. Live within your means and have a plan. Just like you plan a vacation and how to spend your day, you have to plan how you are going to spend and save your money too. Have you ever been able to travel to Ottawa and if so, what were some of your favourite memories about the city?
I have been to Ottawa many times and visited Parliament and did the boat tour and I love it there. Unfortunately both times I have come

“If you choose the job you love, you will never have to work a day in your life.” get into such as fashion in the baby and toddler world; I have 2 young girls myself so I know that world really well. The tech world also interests me a lot – there are really so many things I love and I am happy that my experience as an entrepreneur can help on so many different levels. At the end of the day, whether or not it’s creating a beer or whether it be creating a baby bottle or a fashionable skirt, it’s all about branding, manufacturing, distributing and retail which I love and am good at and deal with every day.

Being able to explain it simply and clearly and knowing your financials and numbers because a business is nothing if it’s not numbers, especially for an investor. If you don’t have a handle on your numbers I am going to be nervous giving you my money. There are a lot of times when pitches finish and we are unsure of what they were trying to pitch! So be clear and concise and know your numbers.

have been in the winter so next time I hope I can come in the summer (laughs). It’s beautiful there and there is so much history. The statue of Nellie McClung of the Famous Five was so touching. Ottawa is always an amazing experience because it makes you feel like you are a part of something bigger when you are there; with the legislature being there it feels like the center of the country which is nice to feel.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given throughout your career?
If you choose the job you love, you will never have to work a day in your life. You have to

This may not jive with a lot of people and make people feel squeamish.

This can get out of hand, and you could end up bothering a lot of people around town!

You may end up spending too much money on gambling, plus people tend to start splitting up.

Sometimes escaping into the wilderness may sound like a good idea, but not for your bachelor or bachelorette!

YOU ARE TURNING INTO A

Bridezilla

Anger

Reference: stereotypeoftheday.blogspot.com

5 SIGNS

Everyone knows that planning a wedding isn’t easy. However, just because the day you’re planning for is your day, doesn’t mean you can be a nightmare to everyone helping you with the planning. When the bride starts going crazy and freaks out about everything, she’s entered the bridezilla stage. Here are 5 key signs of a bridezilla:

1

Before the wedding, you have many close friends and family members. Now that the wedding planning has begun, don’t let the anger from the planning affect your relationships or you won’t have to worry about having too many friends to invite.

Bad time management

2

If you’ve started thinking that you won’t be able to work as often or you can’t see your friends as often due to planning, you’ve become a bridezilla. Don’t let a wedding that’s over a year away affect your personal life in a negative way. A wedding isn’t more important than your close relationships.

Change enrages you

3

Don’t be afraid to steer away from your original plans. If things don’t go fully according to plan, don’t beat yourself up about it. You have to be flexible, because everything happens for a reason and you’ll likely have to make certain changes throughout the wedding planning process.

People are avoiding you

4

In this case, you should take it personally. Whether it’s your Maid of Honour, your caterer or even the photographer, any sign of them not taking your calls is probably because of the things you’ve said or done to them. Remember, they’ve done this before (most likely), and they’re there to help you. Don’t lose your cool on them, and if you do, don’t be surprised if you get the silent treatment once in a while.

Going over your budget

Before anything, make sure you know what your budget is and don’t go over it. Even if this means settling for certain things, there’s no point in making your parents or fiancé find second jobs so that they can afford things for your wedding. Keep your budget reasonable and stick to it. If you go above it and expect others to make up for the money, you’ve officially become a bridezilla.

WHY DO WE EXCHANGE RINGS AT A WEDDING CEREMONY? Rings are exchanged to indicate that the wearer is married. Traditionally, women wore rings while men did not. The practice of men wearing rings has become more popular only in the last few hundred years. The ring is a symbol of love and, according to sources from ancient Egypt, the circle is endless and represents eternity.

WHY IS THE RING PLACED ON THE “RING FINGER”? Like the origins of the ring itself, we can look to ancient Egypt for the origins of ring placement. Egyptians believed that what has now become known as the “ring finger” had a vein that connected directly to the heart. This was called the vena amoris or the love vein.

WHY

?

WHY ARE WEDDING DRESSES MOSTLY WHITE? In some cultures, wedding dresses aren’t white, but in western culture, white is typically the norm. White is meant to symbolize purity. It’s popularity as the primary colour for wedding dresses began when Queen Victoria chose to wear white in the 19th century.

WHY DO BRIDES WALK DOWN THE AISLE WITH FLOWERS? To ward off the plague, of course! Well, that’s how this tradition likely started. The bundle of flowers was originally a bundle of garlic and dill, which was thought to ward off plague. Over time, flowers replaced garlic and dill and the tradition stuck.

WHY DO SOME GROOMS BREAK GLASS AT THEIR WEDDING? This Jewish tradition traces its roots to the destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem – a reminder of the most holy of Jewish places. It is meant to serve as a reminder of how holy marriage is, and how fragile a relationship is when not properly nurtured.

WEDDING

Choosing the Right

Table Wine There are many important questions you may have when picking out the vino for your big day. What kind of wine do you serve your guests? How many bottles of wine do you need? How many bottles of champagne? What are the most popular types of wine served? When do you start serving wine? FACES has the answers for you!

How do I choose? Typically, at weddings, there are at least two choices of wine, one red and one white. The most popular red wines served are Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Pinot Noir. The most popular white wines are Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Chardonnay. You should pair your wine with your choices of food on the menu. For example, Chardonnays are great with prawns or pasta with cream sauces and Pinot Grigios are great with lighter fish such as halibut or haddock. For reds, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon are both great accompaniments to lamb and steak. Once you decide on your meals, you can decide what wines to pair them with.

What about bottles versus boxes? If you’re really on a budget, box wine may be an option for you. Although not the best quality, it could definitely save you some money. Just be sure to have the servers bring out pre-poured glasses during the reception so your guests don’t see it coming from a box!

How many? You will need approximately 3 cases (36 bottles) of wine per 100 guests at a wedding. How did we come up with this number? A general rule of thumb is one drink per person per hour of your reception and wine is about 1/3 of the alcohol consumed at a wedding (liquor and beer making up the other ratio). Therefore, you will need approximately 30-35 glasses of wine an hour to accommodate 100 guests. Each 750ml bottle of wine produces approximately 4-6 glasses of wine (depending on how generous the pour is). This means you will need between 8-10 bottles of wine per hour of your reception. The last thing you want to do is run out of wine!

What about Champagne? Champagne and sparkling wine is used for toasts so be sure to have enough for every guest to get at least one glass. Each bottle of champagne produces approximately 6 glasses!

Wine as a Theme Having your wedding at a vineyard would be the ultimate way of incorporating a wine theme to your wedding! Being in Ontario, we are lucky to have a vast amount of vineyards to choose from. Many vineyards have wedding packages that include some wine from their own cellars as well and they would be the best people to work with in helping you choose the right wines.

WEDDING Why enjoy just a few weddings with cherished friends and family when you can spoil the weddings of complete strangers? Just watch out for the stage 5 clingers.

Wedding Crashers (2005)

Looking for a romantic, adventurous, fun, comedic wedding film? As you wish…

Princess Bride (1987)

The one thing most weddings are missing is a standard 4:1 ratio of weddings to funerals. It’s also got a charming Hugh Grant.

Man up and watch this female-focused comedy because not only is it hilarious, but it will make you appreciate women more.

As a father, I can safely say that I am both dreading and looking forward to my daughter’s wedding day. I can only hope it will be as funny as this classic film.

Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994)

Bridesmaids (2011)

Father of the Bride (1981)

Best and Worst American Wedding (2003) This is the 862nd installment in the American Pie series. Filled with the same formulaic comedy as its predecessors, this film isn’t worth your time.

64 | May 2016

27 Dresses (2008) Poor, poor Katherine Heigl. She went from Hollywood sweetheart with a starring role on a widely popular show to relative obscurity. This film certainly contributed to her downward spiral.

Runaway Bride (1999) Pretty Woman showed that Roberts and Gere are on-screen dynamos with wonderful chemistry. This movie showed that sometimes lightning doesn’t strike twice.

Fools Rush In (1997) More like Fool’s Watch This Movie… Am I right?

The Princess Diaries 2 Because we needed a sequel. It pains me to slam this movie because I like Hathaway, but this movie is a royal disaster.

Not all wedding movies are exclusively about weddings. Instead, sit back and watch a group of morons have a last hurrah with a groom who features very little in this comedic gem.

An Indie wedding film that became the highest-grossing rom-com ever made. Of course they made a sequel.

This character-driven film shows that weddings can bring people from all different walks of life together. Even those with a difficult past. It’s clever, funny and a crowd pleaser.

The Hangover (2009)

My Big, Fat Greek Wedding (2002)

The Birdcage (1996)

For some reason this is a top pick for many ladies. I’m not sure why as it’s sad, tragic and captures how truly alone Roberts’ feels. Why is this a top wedding? I don’t know.

My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997)

The most underappreciated person at any wedding is the singer. In this film, Sandler is the most appreciated and steals the show in this great ‘90s comedy.

The Wedding Singer (1998)

Wedding Movies The Wedding Planner (2001)

The Bachelor (1999)

I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry (2007)

Made of Honor (2008)

License to Wed (2007)

J-Lo steals someone’s husband in this “romantic” comedy.

No. This isn’t your beloved TV show ladies. It’s an awful film.

Adam Sandler makes the best and worst list. Congratulations on being awesome and awful all at once.

McDreamy was a McNightmare in this movie. He definitely lost some lustre in this wedding tank job.

7% on Rotten Tomatoes… that is all.

Wedding on a Budget WEDDING

The wedding industry is a multi-billion dollar industry ranging from cute backyard ceremonies to lavish receptions. Unfortunately, weddings are expensive and we are not all rich and famous, but don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Here are some great cost saving tips to help you get the wedding of your dreams.

Hire a student

Venue

Food

Buy Used

The Cake

For your photography, food, music and even hair and make-up for yourself and wedding party, there are many talented students in university/college who would be more than happy to help out on your special day for a much more affordable cost.

Pick a location such as a park, aquarium, or even someone’s garden, as the fees will be much lower - or free - and you will need to purchase less décor as the ambiance will already be there for you. Holding your ceremony and reception at the same location will also save paying separate fees and transportation costs between the venues.

Instead of a sit-down dinner, have a lunch, BBQ, or afternoon tea style reception. This will ensure your costs are lower on food, and if your reception is during the afternoon, it is likely your guests will drink less, saving on liquor costs as well.

There are many great sites in which gently used (or even new) items from decorations to fake flowers, shoes, and even the dress, are for sale at much lower prices. If you don’t want to buy used, consider selling your own gently used items yourself after your event to get some of your money back.

Cupcakes are often cheaper than a wedding cake and allow you to choose multiple flavours. If you do decide you want a cake, order a smaller decorated cake for display and cutting but have a simpler cake served to guests.

Most importantly, figure out your budget and STICK TO IT! Don’t even try on that $5,000 dress or eat that $400 cake; it will only tempt you and possibly lead you astray.

Mothers make the world go round, and one day out of the year isn’t enough to show them how much they mean to us. Whether she’s your mother, grandmother, mother of your child, or has been like a mother to you, she deserves to be celebrated year round! So instead of just making her breakfast in bed on this one day, here are some other ideas to strengthen the bond with the important ladies in our lives on Mother’s Day.

May 8th, 2016

Mother’s Day Take her on a weekend getaway! Do a wine tour at a close by vineyard or head to Tremblant, which is much quieter in May.

Pamper her! Schedule a massage, manicure, or pedicure for your mom who works so hard taking care of everyone else. Nordik Spa is just 20 minutes from downtown Ottawa.

Clean the entire house while you let her do her favourite things (read a book, have a coffee, just relaxing).

Take her for Afternoon Tea at the Chateau Laurier.

Enroll her in a class she’d be interested in – has she always wanted to play the piano? Does she like singing or dancing while she’s going about her daily duties?

FACES PRODUCT REVIEW The

PetBot

Price $260CAN for pre-orders and soon to be increased to $287CAN once released.

Function The PetBot allows you to check in and interact with your pet while you’re away from home. It can be used to dispense treats and has a built-in camera and speaker designed to recognize faces and automatically send a “pet selfie”. You can use it to check in on your pet through the free app for iOS or Android.

Verdict We like the idea of being able to check in on your pet to see what shoes they decided to chew today, however, this has its setbacks. If they are doing something they shouldn’t be doing, it could cause stress on you if you can’t get home right away. Not to mention it would probably freak out your pet if it hears your voice coming out of a box, and if your pet knows there are treats inside, watch out! They may find creative ways of accessing the treats. Also, let’s limit the selfie taking to humans!

Thinking of Buying a Cottage? By: Jason Peyman While it may seem like winter is never going to end, soon the snow will be gone and summer will be upon us. For some, this will be the summer they finally decide to buy that dream cabin in the woods where they can relax and get away from everything. However, purchasing a cottage is different than buying a home in the city and there are often many issues to be aware of before making an offer. Here are just a few items to keep in mind when looking for a cottage. Well and Septic Most homes in urban areas are on city water and sewer so your biggest concern when buying is likely to be that the previous owner is up to date on paying these bills. On the other hand, most cottages will be on well and septic which brings about more questions. Is the water potable? Were proper permits obtained to install the well and septic? Are the well and septic sufficient to serve your needs? There should be numerous provisions in your offer, such as having an inspection done of the well and septic and asking for proper permits, to increase the likelihood you will not run into problems in the future. If you do not perform this due diligence in advance, there could be significant costs incurred in the future as repairing or replacing a well or septic system can be very expensive.

Access In more rural areas, it is common that you may have to travel over private roads in order to get to your cottage. Therefore, it is important to find out whether you have direct access to your cottage via public roads or if you are required to go on private property. If you do need to use someone else’s property in order to get to your cottage, you should have your lawyer check to ensure that you have a legal right registered on title to do so (this is called an easement). Without a legal easement, you could be deemed to be trespassing and, as a result, have no way to legally access your property.   Building Restrictions Perhaps you find an ideal location and you intend to build your dream cottage on that land. Before committing to buy the property, you should research whether there are any restrictions on what can be built and where you can construct your cottage. For example, by-laws may restrict the type of dwelling that can be built or the property could be on a floodplain that limits where you can build. As a result, it is crucial to have a provision in your offer that makes it conditional on confirming you can

build the structure you want. Otherwise, you may have end up having a permanent campsite instead of a cottage. These are just some of the issues to consider when purchasing a cottage. To ensure you are properly informed, it is important to surround yourself with a team of professionals who can properly advise you. This would include a real estate agent and lawyer that have experience dealing with cottage properties.

DISCLAIMER: This article provides general information and should not be construed as legal advice or establish a solicitor-client relationship by way of the information contained herein. You should seek qualified legal advice before acting on any of the information provided herein.

Crown Patent & Waterfront Issues When you finally find that ideal spot on the water, you may start envisioning private cookouts on the beach or building a dock for your new boat. Unfortunately, there is a chance you may not own right up to the water’s edge. As a result, this could mean that you will not be the only one enjoying the water and that you will need permission from the appropriate authority before building a dock or boathouse. In some cases, there are Crown patents that could result in the government owning sixty-six feet of property from the water’s edge. Furthermore, the Crown patent may also include other reservations in favour of the government, such as rights to any minerals or timber on your property. As such, you should confirm the contents of the Crown patent so you are clear whether any rights are reserved and exactly what you are purchasing.

13 FREAKY FACTS ABOUT

Friday the 13

th

1 The fear of Friday the 13th is called friggatriskaidekaphobia or paraskevidekatriaphobia. I may be more afraid of that name than the day!

2 A lot of people actually fear Friday the 13th, which has affected businesses all over the world including airlines. Would you fly on Friday the 13th?

3 There is at least one Friday the 13th every year and the most that can occur in any given year is 3.

4 Even during a leap year, there can still be 3 Friday the 13th’s.

5 Jason Voorhee’s mask from the Friday the 13th horror franchise is one of the most well known images in pop culture.

6 Some historians say the origin of Friday the 13th being unlucky could be biblical. Friday was the day Jesus was crucified and Judas was thought to be the 13th guest at the Last Supper.

9 7 Apollo 13 was launched at 13:13 on April 11, 1970 with the oxygen tank exploding 2 days later on April 13th – although it was not a Friday, people associate 13 with being unlucky!

8 Many skyscrapers do not have a 13th floor and some hospitals even avoid having rooms numbered 13.

Tupac Shakur died on Friday, September 13th, 1996.

10 Taylor Swift actually likes the number 13; she was born on the 13th and turned 13 on Friday the 13th.

11 13 is also considered unlucky because it comes after 12 which is a number of completeness (12 months in a year, 12 hours on a clock, 12 Zodiac signs)

12 On Friday the 13th, 2029, an asteroid will come freakishly close to the Earth but not hit it. (Phewph! One might dare to call that lucky!)

13 Every Friday the 13th since 1981, there is a motorcycle rally in Port Dover, Ontario that draws approximately 100,000 bikers!

FACES FACTS ON THE

Turtle

INSPIRED BY INTERNATIONAL TURTLE DAY MAY 23RD 1 Turtles have been on Earth for over 150 million years.

2 Just like they said on Finding Nemo, there are certain species of turtles that can live to be over 100 years old.

3 Land turtles (called tortoises) can be found on every continent in the world, except for Antarctica.

4 Turtles often vary in sizes, depending on which type of breed they are. The largest turtles, known as the “Leatherback Turtle” can weigh up to 1,500 lbs. The smallest turtle is the “Speckled Tortoise” and can weigh as little as 3 oz!

5 A turtle’s shell is made up of 60 different bones that are all connected to each other.

THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS Why Although beautiful year-round, the Scottish Highlands really shine in May. That’s because everything is in full bloom during May and the weather is more touristfriendly. Nature is at its best with flowers, lochs (lakes) and rugged land that will appeal to adventurers and casual travelers alike. If the landscape is not your thing, then you can always tour castles and taste whiskies.

Where to Stay Inverlochy Castle Hotel. If you want to feel like royalty, and get the pictures to boot, this is the must-stay place. Even if you can’t afford a full week at this luxurious castle you should at least book a night or two to transport yourself to a different era and social class.

What to See The landscape. Although the Scottish Highlands are rife with history, castles, whiskies and so much more, the landscape is really what defines the highlands. Explore the side roads, lochs and mountains and imagine yourself hundreds of years in the past. Then you can cap off your day with a whisky at a distillery, and warm yourself by the fire at a castle hotel.
