A Month of Fashion, Fun and Feasting! The three F’s – the fundamental pillars of a hedonistic lifestyle. First off, there’s Fashion, because, well, if you’re going to have fun, you might as well look good doing it! Then there’s Fun, because if you’re not having fun, then there’s not much point doing it at all really, is there? And Feasting – good food is one of life’s sensual pleasures, and one that is enjoyed more as a social activity than a solitary one. And the good news is that Bahrain has no shortage in that respect. Now that we’ve established the three F’s, let’s break down this issue for each one: Fashion – this month there are no less than 25 pages of Autumn/Winter fashion laid out for thanks to our Bahrain’s Top Model 2012 Winners’ shoot, with Pauline and Imtiaz, on page 74, featuring clothing by New Look and Lipsy (we’ve Model Competition). And then there is our annual Autumn/Winter Fashion update on p.60, featuring looks and styles seen on the catwalks this season. Winter is a special season for fashionistas, because the added layering that it affords allows for a much wider variety of styles and looks, so don’t miss out! Fun – I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again:

the period from September to December is my favourite time of the year, because there’s just no end to the events and parties happening on the island. This month alone, we have a Bora Bora Ibiza party at Dragon, a Katy Perry/Lady Gaga tribute at JJ’s, two separate parties, including Ministry of Sound, at Coral Bay, and the ongoing K Factor Karaoke competition at Kicks, as well as the Comedy Club. There’s also gossip of a brand new venue opening in Juffair this month, but at the time of going to press the details were still secret! Watch out on our Facebook page for details about that… Feasting – Now we get to the most important part. Aside from a review of the phenomenal new Bushido Brunch (p.94) and news of two food launch of the Citibank FACT Dining Awards 2012 (cue fanfare). The nation’s biggest and ONLY publicly voted awards campaign for the leisure and dining scene, the FACT Dining Awards give you, the buying public and the people who matter there and start reacquainting yourself with all the great restaurants and venues out there? I think not.

I would put money on the fact that if these numpties took their tests again in the United Kingdom, or europe or Australia or the USA for that matter, A couple of months ago I remember ranting about it in this very same spot. Well sorry people, but it’s a pretty frequent topic that is discussed on a daily basis. My sister is now back in the UK and her driving habits still resemble minute braking, swearing, swerving… Maybe it is because I am a nervous passenger; maybe it is because I hate not being in control – whatever it is, I start shaking whenever I am in a car. I have now learnt that there is only

one way to avoid being caught up in your own awful car crash here – either drive like the worst of them or don’t drive at all. A number of people I know have lost friends and family on the roads of Bahrain, lives that shouldn’t have been taken because someone wasn’t careful enough to look where they were going or wait for the green light. who were killed earlier this year – well no one seems to have learnt a lesson from this. After nearly being taken out on a quiet street whilst on my daily 6am walk, I am starting to think that nowhere is safe, whether as a driver, passenger, or pedestrian.

Playing in JJ’s has opened up a whole new world for Dave, he says, as in his former roles he was limited to certain genres of music, like house, techno, and Rn’B, whereas in JJ’s he can play pretty much anything he likes, as long as the crowd likes it too! “Really enjoying it so far. I spent three years DJing in Cocoon playing house music, so it’s been refreshing being able to play something different. I’m very into music, and I like researching new tracks and bands. For called ‘Cops and Robbers’, by Bean, which is going to be huge. I have a huge collection of music, so haven’t been caught out by a request so far, even if the track wasn’t something I’m necessarily proud of having!” Dave brings a little something different to JJ’s, playing crowd pleasers, but also playing brand new music that he’s found that you might not have heard of before, and combined with resident band The Noise, this is a breath of fresh air into a place that was in slight danger of becoming a little clichéd! Cover Your

re you a business owner? Do you regularly import products to sell or distribute in your business? Perhaps you’re a boutique fashion store. Or maybe you import custom car parts for your workshop. The truth of the matter is that accidents happen at sea. In fact, do a search on marina accidents just for 2012, and you’ll be surprised at the results. You incidents. You’d be way off ! There have been over twenty incidents involving cargo ships either sinking, running aground or colliding with other ships this year alone! It therefore makes sense to ensure you are covered. In addition, insurance is required by purchase products to import, and usually by customs as well. As import business owners know, the paperwork can be a nightmare! however, things just got a little easier thanks to Bahrain National Insurance (bni). They’ve recently improved their marine cargo insurance service by launching available at the bni Automated Insurance Machines, whereby customers with the details to get any shipment covered. The concept of a marine cargo based on the fact that the importer number of consignments on a regular and frequent basis does not have to seek cover for each and every consignment. But here’s the real bonus: You can then download and print all the insurance and customs without having to actually go to a bni branch! In addition, the cover can also apply to shipments by land or air as well. Losing a shipment of precious cargo could cripple a small business, so it’s always best to have peace of mind.

R

obin Barratt is no stranger to the world of writing. British by birth yet currently residing in Bahrain, Robin is the best-selling author of seven books, five fitting in the genre of true crime. Having first formed the Bahrain Writers’ Circle in February 2011, the group has now turned into one of the largest creative groups of international writers in the country. Many of you would have seen the latest title to hit the shelves earlier this year – ‘My Beautiful Bahrain’ – which is a collection of stories all written by members of the BWC. The book has sold tens of thousands of copies to date, granting it the status of being the fastest-selling book of its kind here… ever! Starting off this October is a competition designed to encourage writers in Bahrain to utilize their talents. What is set to be the biggest-ever writing competition to have taken place in the Kingdom, Robin is on a mission to showcase the talent on the island. “We have so much literary talent here in Bahrain, so many excellent writers that rarely get read or heard, let alone published, and so I want to hold a high-profile writing event which aims to highlight their talent to the world, thus putting the best of Bahrain’s writers firmly on the international literary map.” So what does the competition actually entail? Well the writers will have three months to write a story for submission between February 1 and 14 2013. Each of the stories must be between 30,000 and 35,000 words, should all be written in English and have to be based in Bahrain. “Whether

romance, crime or horror, authors can write about anything as long as there is no religious criticism or political agenda of any kind. The competition is even open to they need not worry too much about the perfection of the written english as it can be edited later. The key to the competition is to be creative, to have a captivating storyline and plot and to showcase Bahrain by incorporating the culture, architecture, history and people of the island.” With hundreds of submissions meticulous and should take a month, where the winners will be announced in April. Like every competition, prizes will be awarded and these are definitely something celebrities and competition sponsors have judged the final entries, the winner and two professionally published, both as a hardcopy paperback and as an Apple’s eBookstore. The winner will receive an amazing BD3000, while the runners up will receive BD1000 each. Apart from the specified limitations above, this competition is open to anyone and everyone! Anyone aged between 16 and 60 can submit their creations. “What I am looking for is creativity – a real motivate local writers to put pen to So, if you think you have the talent, then this competition is definitely worth entering. The Toyota 86 is looking like hype surrounding it!”

F

ew cars have generated within me the kind of

Toyota 86 did when we booked it for a test drive. This is a car that has been eagerly anticipated by both Toyota enthusiasts and the motoring press alike, as it Toyota have made to produce coupe since the demise of the iconic Celica back in 2006. however, it should be said that the 86 is NOT a replacement for the Celica, as whereas the last

drive. Like the Celica, the 86 which doesn’t actually mean four seats, it really means two

In fact, the Toyota 86 traces its roots back to the old Toyota Corolla Trevin Ae86, a sports coupe from the 1980s, and even alludes to the iconic Toyota however, what is totally unique about the 86 is that

54

FACT BAHRAIN OCTOBER

this car was made in a joint collaboration between Toyota and Subaru, meaning that while it’s a sporty Toyota coupe, it also boasts the awesome DNA of cars like the Subaru Impreza STI. While badged all over as a Toyota, scratch beneath the surface and the truth becomes apparent, especially when you look beneath the bonnet. and Subaru names emblazoned embossed on certain parts of the chassis. Indeed, in certain places it will actually be sold as the Subaru BRZ (of which they’re planning an STI version, which’ll be interesting!). you with the 86 is the styling – it looks fantastic! That sleek and hungry look, emphasised by those two little ‘fangs’ on the lower lip of the front air scoop really give it an impression of speed, and yet they haven’t overdone it – the lines are simple, and yet elegant, which means that it’s got a look that will stand the test of time. Inside, the good news continues. Again, Toyota haven’t overdone things, such

as festooning the steering wheel with audio controls and Bluetooth buttons, and the like. The interior is simple, and at that red stitching, and the model we drove comes with Get behind the wheel, and the surprises just keep on coming. The 86 is a car that begs to be pot doesn’t seem like much at lower revs, but then you get to a piece of twisting, open road, and open her up... it’s a whole different world! The 86 only really comes alive at around 5000rpm, and as long as you keep it up there, there’s no end to the fun you can have! At only around 200hp, you wouldn’t the very low weight of the car, it’s surprisingly nippy, and feels even faster thanks to the small size and low seating position. The 86 reminds me of a sleepy Jack Russel terrier my aunt used to own – not much fun, until you walk into the room with a tennis ball and leash, and it

realises it’s time to play. Then it’s whizzing round the room, bouncing off the couches, and shooting off down the street! The harder you push the 86, the more it responds. And you can tell that this was a car made for anyone to have fun in. While it’s full of surprises, you never get the feeling that it’s going to turn around and bite you in the ass. It simply isn’t ThAT powerful – the engine don’t overwhelm the capabilities of the chassis. While it’s great fun to take it out into the desert and throw it around a bit, any loss of grip at the back end can be corrected wheel, assisted in part by the traction control. Turn the traction control off, and things get even better – you can start using the gas pedal and steering to wrestle the car around corners in any style you like – The steering is fantastic – it’s precise, responsive, perfectly weighted, and boasts lots of

horizontally, they’re able to shift the weight of the engine lower down into the chassis, lowering the centre of gravity and improving the handling. And because the engine is positioned as far back as possible, the balance is impressive too, with 53% of the weight at the front end, and 47% at the rear. There is just one, burning issue I would like to raise about the 86 in Bahrain. WheRe The heLL IS The MANUAL?!? Seriously guys, get with it! This is a driver’s car, and serious driver’s cars ShOULD Be MANUAL. Read any review of the 86 anywhere online and in car mags, and there is one universal concensus. The MANUAL IS BeTTeR! Automatic does NOT necessarily a better car make! There are a number of proper drivers in Bahrain who’d probably buy the 86 if they

need for a given corner most of the time, shifting down rapidly to find it for you. If you’re a driving enthusiast, but not a not disappoint you at all! however, despite the fact that I said earlier that the power was enough for a car like this, I was lying. In Bahrain, where you can pick up Mustangs for a similar price, muscle means a lot. And it’s not just in Bahrain. Go online, and you’ll see that the 86 is already getting customised with turbos and superchargers all over the place, with many kits already available specifically for the 86. The thing is, though, that if you’re going to add power to this car, you really need to add some improved alloys with lower profile tyres to handle it. But, you won’t mind, because now we come to the best thing about the Toyota 86 – the price.

The steering is fantastic –

responsive, perfectly weighted, and boasts lots of feeback from the front tyres

on eK Kanoo, be bold. Push the boat out! Take a chance. Bring over the manual option, even if only in small numbers. It’ll sell, I promise! fantastic. Pop it over to the manual option, the you have a paddles on the steering wheel, or the gear lever. Gear changes are amazingly fast, especially considering that it’s not a even in full auto mode, adept at choosing the gear you

rang in at just BD13,200, which equates to a hUGe amount of fun for your money. It also you would have spent on a hyundai Genesis Coupe can now be spent on adding a turbo and a set of BBS alloys! racer, just waiting to be modified, and while many people will buy it and happily drive it around as standard,

Overall, the Toyota 86 has intended it to achieve – it’s a supposed to, and will take its place right up there alongside classics such as the 2000GT or the Supra. This is a car that people will still be happily driving twenty years from now.

With now 35 team members involved in the company, all with their own specialized roles, Gulf Arabesque is destined to continue to achieve inspirational and infamous creations. According to Ahmed, the current status for designers in Bahrain is tough. “Most of them, once they have graduated, have to choose whether they work for a private company or in the government field. There aren’t many opportunities for individuals to open up their own businesses as too many of them concentrate on

traditional Islamic designs. Interior design is based on architectural design and vice versa – they both depend on each other and if anyone isn’t educated properly on the current market, then they will just get lost.” For Ahmed, starting his own business was an easy process. “I didn’t face many issues as I had so many projects to work with. I would have to say that the most important thing is that you have to be proud of what you do, love what you do and be loyal to your work. You have to keep updated with the materials being used as products change every year.” Ahmed went on to say that, “Bahraini style is Bahraini style – I didn’t create it, I am just following it. Bushido Brunch

WheN we heard last month that Bushido was weighing to the inclusive Friday afternoon revelry, we knew we had to give it a go! The Bushido brunch scores well for several reasons. First off, whilst the atmosphere in Bushido at night is very cosy, dark and intimate, the atmosphere during the day is a decidedly different affair, with sunlight pouring in the massive windows and views of the pleasant pond and gardens outside creating a perfect backdrop for an afternoon’s indulgence. Secondly, being a new starter on the brunch scene, the Bushido brunch is an absolute bargain at the moment. It’s cheaper than most other brunches on the island right now, simply because the management are looking to get it off the ground, so be sure to be take advantage, because once it gets popular, you can bet that the prices

While other brunches on the island tend to try and please everyone with food from around the world, with varying degrees of success, Bushido sticks to what it knows, which is Japanese cuisine and Japanese fusion. And it does this

person basis. The reason for this is that these particular dishes are just that tad more special than the rest of the restaurant’s brunch selection.

We didn’t manage to get around all of it, but highly recommended is the Teppenyaki room, with a selection of chicken, shrimp, squid in a tray if you’re feeling impatient, or freshly made by the chefs on hand. We advise waiting, as aside from the performance the chefs love to put on, that freshly made Teppenyaki beef hot off the plate is absolutely divine. And then there is the set menu,

Just writing about it now is getting the stomach rumbling! freely and are of a quality unusually high for a brunch! especially good are the cocktails, with a selection of trying out. If you haven’t been to the Bushido Brunch yet, we can’t recommend it enough, and as we said, make the most of it now, because by our reckoning, getting a table there won’t be easy before long!

to a place of leadership? Then instead of it being the beginning of great things, it turned out to be the top of a real slippery slope into something that seemed to be a bit of a disaster. Around 1995 studies discovered that some people with average IQ’s outperformed people with higher IQ’s. This made people realize that IQ (one’s ability to rationalize, and perform technical tasks, etc.) is not the only aspect that contributes to success. They realized that eI (emotional intelligence) is just as, if not more important than IQ. You would most probably recognize those people with high eI as those people who have that certain indescribable quality. You just know that they are special, because for some reason people are happy to work with them and for them. eI, however, is not as indescribable as we may think it is. emotional intelligence is described as the ability to perceive be able to positively direct your behavior. In other words, when you understand how you feel and why you feel it, you can learn how to behave in a way that will most likely put you on the path to success. Then there is the social aspect of eI, where by being able to understand the emotions in others, you can easily make communication as pleasant and effective as possible. Sound good? Now, the good news is that one can increase need to be improved to help us do this. Being able to reduce stress, recognize and manage emotions, to connect with others using nonverbal communication, being able to use humor in order to put things into a own or with the help of a professional. here’s to being clever in all kinds of ways!
