Hello, sunshine!

Travel means different things to different people. For some, it’s about discovering history and architecture and for others, it’s about exploring natural landscapes. When I visit a new place, I find interacting with the locals and trying out the traditional food to be the most interesting experiences. No matter what type of a globetrotter you are, our cover story this month has you covered. We’ve come up with some of the most exciting summertime destinations, offering diverse things to see and do. There’s a lot happening this month, from concerts to art exhibitions. Read our Listen Up pages to find out more. While you’re at it, browse through the dining offers. While Eid al-Adha and Father’s Day are the major events to watch out for this month, there’s a wide range of other gastronomic adventures to embark upon, from barbecues and brunches to delightful afternoon teas.

We review a bunch of interesting dining spots too. Check out the newly redesigned Fiamma Italian restaurant over at Sofitel Bahrain. Everything’s new and improved, from the décor to the menu, and we love it! We also tried a romantic getaway at The Domain Bahrain.

In motoring, we take the all-new HONGQI Ousado for a spin around town. Our past experiences with HONGQI had raised the bar but we’re happy to share that this beastly saloon lives up to the name. The new BMW 5 series is due to launch later this year and you can learn more in this issue. Further, FACT attended the unveiling of Genesis’ lineup of EV models in Saudi. Elsewhere we take a look at what’s interesting in the movies, music, books, fashion and beauty worlds.

Whether you’re Bahrain-bound or planning a holiday this summer, keep this issue close and you can come back to interesting reads throughout the month.

URGENT SUPPORT NEEDED

The Bahrain Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BSPCA) is facing a financial crisis and is at risk of closing its Animal Welfare Center (AWC).

BSPCA has been a registered charity for more than 40 years and has contributed to the betterment and humane treatment of animals in the Kingdom.

Over that period, the organisation has made considerable and constructive efforts by providing numerous services to the community including governmental consultation, spaying and neutering programmes and educational initiatives for children as well as providing food, shelter, medical care and adoption services to animals in need.

The unfortunate situation of rising costs combined with reduced donors is making it extremely difficult for the BSPCA to continue operations. Without the centre, hundreds of needy animals would be left without a home or other support.

At the moment, free adoptions to good homes are being offered for those animals that have been in the care of the BSPCA for over two years. These animals have all been spayed or neutered, vaccinated and assessed for their physical and mental health. The BSPCA desperately needs your help and support during this most difficult time to keep the AWC open.

Commenting on the situation, Mahmood Faraj, Chairman, said: “We are currently heading towards closure and the amount raised so far isn’t even 10% of what we want. We need financial help, if any company can take care of the electricity bills, we will be grateful. If anyone can provide food for the animals, it will help. Anyone who can help in any way is welcome.

“We have announced the animals [with the BSPCA for over two years] can be adopted for free until we can find them good homes.”

Those willing to contribute can help in numerous ways, details for which are available on the BSPCA’s website and social media accounts. They can be reached on Instagram @bspca, Twitter @BSPCA_BH and Facebook @BSPCA - Official Page. A little goes a long way! ✤

INNOVATIVE & SUSTAINABLE

Bahrain-based Green Corp has acquired a stake in Badia Farms to expand sustainable food production across the GCC.

Green Corp, a home-grown agribusiness platform, and Badia Farms, the GCC’s first vertical farming company supplying gourmet produce to hotels and discerning consumers, will develop the Gulf’s regional food production industry together.

Green Corp will enable Badia Farms to expand its advanced production models and pesticide-free farms into Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. Established in 2016, the latter’s sustainable farming techniques produce nutritious fruits and vegetables without sunlight or soil. Its energy-efficient methods use up to 90% less water than traditionally-grown crops, with significantly higher yields.

Omar Al Jundi, Badia Farms’ CEO, said: “Green Corp’s partnership with Badia Farms demonstrates the strength of local backing for home-grown companies to resolve regional and global challenges. This funding provides Badia Farms with powerful means to enhance healthy domestic food production in the GCC.

We look forward to providing premium, locally-produced fruits and vegetables using our high-tech farms across Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.”

Saleh AlBelushi, CEO of Green Corp, said: “Badia Farms fits perfectly into Green Corp’s regional development plan for food production and processing. Its fine products will be a success in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, as they have been in the UAE. Badia Farms also shares our strong focus on sustainability, as we look for opportunities to develop sustainable agriculture, aquaculture, food processing and production projects across the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC). Green Corp would welcome additional partners to develop these regional food sustainability plans together.” ✤ GO: FOLLOW @GII.UAE FOR MORE INFORMATION.

A GARDEN ON YOUR PLATE

If you’ve ever wanted to give your homemade culinary creations the same beauty found in fancy restaurants, Jenan Abdulla grows edible flowers in her garden, which you can use in your dishes, drinks and as cake decorations.

Green fingered Jenan has loved flowers and gardening ever since she can remember. She soon realised that blooms are not just for outdoor appreciation or to be kept in a vase at home. But they can also brighten up dishes, drinks and cakes. One can't deny that topping your dish with a flower or a unique vegetable adds a pop of colour. Jenan loves growing many unique varieties. She says: “Two of the common ones that grow easily in Bahrain are pansy, which is perfect for cakes and drinks because of its floral taste, and nasturtium flowers for salads and savoury dishes because of its radish like taste.”

Jenan also grows vegetables such as different types of tomatoes. She adds: “You can’t compare store-bought with home-grown. They [the latter] taste juicier and are full of flavour, as well as you can grow varieties that you can’t find in our local supermarkets.”

Bahrain being hot and humid makes us wonder what typical weather conditions Jenan’s flowers need. And if the local weather is conducive or special arrangements need to be

made. Jenan shares: “They usually grow outdoors starting from November until May.”

Elaborating on cake decorating, she adds: “As much as flowers are beautiful, not all of them are suitable for use on food, and some are even poisonous. My advice is, never use a plant if you don't know what it is. As, if you use a toxic flower and it touches the surface of the cake, remnants on the cake can make you sick. Where your blossoms come from and how they were grown matters. All shop-bought blooms are full of pesticides and chemicals because they are not grown for cakes, even if they’re just placed on the top. If you don’t find any blooms especially during summer, you can use dried flowers that I provide or from trusted sources, or you can make some with frosting.” ✤

ARTISTIC DIVERSITY

Showcasing the island’s creative talent, the Bahrain Annual Fine Arts Exhibition will be open until July 10.

Art, in its many forms, has been intricately woven into Bahrain’s cultural fabric for ages. From the unique Al Naqda embroidery or silver or gold thread-work to pottery and more, the Kingdom has nurtured creativity for generations.

The 49th edition of the Bahrain Annual Fine Arts Exhibition is being hosted under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister. Organised by the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, it was inaugurated by His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa at the Bahrain National Museum. The display is open to art enthusiasts or anyone seeking a cultural experience, daily except Tuesdays, from 8am to 8pm. You will find more than 100 works across various media by 55 local and resident artists, highlighting the diversity of the Bahraini cultural art scene. As in past years, three winners were chosen. Mayasa Alsowaidi came in first place winning the coveted Al Dana Award; second place was awarded to Nada Almuqahwi, and Salman Alnajem

came third. This year, a fourth award has been introduced, the Audience Award. The artist with the highest number of votes will receive it and it will be announced at the end of the exhibition. You can vote for your favourite artwork through the special platform at the exhibition. There’s also a section honouring the memory of the late Bahraini artist Khalil Al Hashimi, who designed the Al Dana award, which showcases his works.

Over the years, the Bahrain Annual Fine Arts Exhibition has attracted a wide range of artists from across the Kingdom. One of the largest and most prominent art exhibitions on the island, it brings together pioneers in the fine arts and young up-andcoming talent. ✤

TAKAYAMA, JAPAN CORNWALL, U.K.

Stroll along the old town streets, lined with traditional houses. Sannomachi street is popular, with shops, cafés and breweries – Takayama produces some of the best Japanese rice beverage. Interact with locals at the morning markets, located along the Miyagawa riverside and in front of Takayama Jinya, a former government office. They have stalls selling food and crafts; the ichii itto bori wood figurines are nice souvenirs and hand-crafted using local wood, which has distinctive colours and a unique lustre. Try out the Hida beef, which is served in a shabu-shabu or hotpot, steamed buns and dumplings. Pair it with hoba miso, a savoury local variety made with a mix of shiitake mushrooms and spring onions. The ramen here is well-known too. Hidagyu

Maruaki restaurant is popular and Suzuya serves halal options. Takayama has preserved houses from the Edo period at Hida no Sato or Hida Folk Village, which include the traditional Gasshostyle with steep roofs, resembling hands joined in prayer.

Cornwall is well-known for its sandy beaches, surfing and seaside resorts. However, it also has a rich culture and history. While it’s officially part of England, this place has preserved its Celtic heritage. Step into a fairytale at Pendennis Castle, with its winding stone staircases, gunrooms and turrets. The café here serves a selection of delicious Cornish fare. Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant is popular but don’t shy away from local food carts. St. Michael’s Mount, a castle on an island in the middle of a blue expanse, is a major tourist site. Stoop under ancient doorways, wander through centuries-old corridors and discover a gamut of artefacts from Queen Victoria’s sofa to Napoleon’s coat. Get a view of the Cornish countryside as you ride the award-winning Heslton Railway; advance booking is a must. Book a luxurious stay at Tregenna Castle Resort, an 18th-century hilltop fortress. Their afternoon tea experience, with Cornish clotted cream tea and scones, can’t be missed.

PITIGLIANO, ITALY BRUGES, BELGIUM

Italy has many tourist hubs but is also home to hidden gems such as Pitigliano. A picture-postcard town on the southern tip of Tuscany, it has a history rooted in the Etruscan era. Walk through the old town, featuring Mediaeval walls fitted with centuries-old gateways and an aqueduct with impressive archways, all signs of a rich past. Head to Piazza della Repubblica, a public square dotted with cafés, where you can enjoy sfratti, a short-crust pastry with a chewy toffee, honey, walnut and nutmeg filling. Piazza S. Gregorio VII also has restaurants and local handicraft shops. Sip on local grape varieties paired with rustic, home-style ragù and bread gnocchi. Cattedrale dei Santi Pietro e Paolo, in the same vicinity, exhibits baroque architecture, artistic interiors and a Mediaeval bell tower. The Palazzo Orsini or Orsini Palace houses an archeological museum, a museum of religious art, as well as paintings and sculptures.

Characterised by Mediaeval buildings, rustic canals and cobbled-stone streets, this picturesque city is thronged by tourists – a testament to its many offerings. Whether you’re a chocolate-lover or not, we recommend you book a workshop, where you can learn to make amazing sweet confections and even try them. Bruges is home to several historic buildings with splendid architecture; the Church of Our Lady exhibits an impressive Gothic-style façade. Inside, the white-marble Madonna and Child sculpture, a creation of Michelangelo, is a major attraction. Walk around Burg Square, the heart of the city, admiring more structures and soaking in the hustle and bustle. Stop for refreshments at Tanners Square and then, unwind on a boat ride along the canals. End the day sipping on local brew. De Halve Maan brewery is well-known. Go for a bird-watching tour or plan a trip to a wildlife rescue centre. If you’re not repulsed by creepy crawlies, visit Monteverde Butterfly Gardens. It houses up to 30 species of butterflies, more than 20 species of bugs and arachnids and an active ant colony. Take a dip in one of the many hot springs, said to have healing properties; the Springs Resort & Spa and Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa, about a three-hour drive from the capital city of San José, are among the popular ones. Costa Rica is a surfer’s paradise too. Tamarindo, Jaco and Dominical are great spots to ride the waves.

The Okavango Delta offers multiple land and water activities. On landing at Maun Airport, you will need to take a short charter flight to one of the camps, which offer various safari adventures. Enjoy a traditional mokoro boat ride and soak in the calmness of the delta. Book a game drive and get up close with the enchanting wildlife. Guided walking safaris are also available, where you can learn how the local bushmen live off the land; try indigenous fruits, wild vegetables or even insects. Deception Valley Lodge is well-known. If you stay at Abu Camp, you can’t miss their elephant safari! Looking for something a little more adventurous? Chobe National Game Park permits self-driven safaris – you will need to hire a vehicle. Diverse animals and birds can be spotted at this time of the year as they are drawn to Chobe River. Accommodation is available in and around the park or you could opt for a houseboat stay. We recommend cross-checking the vaccination list to enter Botswana.

LEISURE & UNWIND

Escape the heat and plan a winter holiday in Tasmania. Unwind as you sip on local malts. If you’re planning a trip in August, don’t miss the week-long festival in Hobart, where you can leave your worries behind and explore the many varieties with food pairing; some are international award winners. Drift into a state of oblivion as you admire the Southern Lights; Mount Wellington and Mount Nelson in Hobart are said to be among the best spots for this. While Aurora Australis isn’t as vibrant as its northern counterpart, it’s definitely a sight to behold. Admire the glorious sunrise from the morning deck, soak into a Huon Pine bath tub out on the evening deck or spend your day at the art studio drawing, painting, sculpting, knitting and reading.

It’s springtime in Cappadocia, which means pleasant weather. The region is home to stunning volcanic rock formations, ‘fairy chimneys’, that seem to change colour at sunset – surreal! These were carved into underground cities centuries ago to home Christian refugees and have since been restored by hoteliers. Book a cave hotel such as Artemis Cave Suites, which has uniquely designed rooms and offers stunning views of the Göreme valleys. You’ll often spot colourful hot air balloons gliding across blue skies, which can be meditative in a way. You can even book your own hot air balloon experience, which will be taken care of by the hotel. Escape for an hour or so as you float, taking in the mesmerising bird’s-eye view of the valleys. On some days, just stay in and treat yourself to a gratifying Turkish bath.

THE RISE OF HONGQI

FACT spent the day in the all-new Ousado, a creation sure to make its mark in the luxury saloon segment.

• ISLAND RIDES

This month, thanks to the team at Zayani Motors, FACT got behind the wheel of the all-new HONGQI Ousado. Having already experienced the opulent HONGQI H9 and the hugely capable HONGQI H5 on previous test drives, we had high expectations for the brand’s latest lavish offering.

Exterior

Our first impression was that the designers applied the now familiar design concept of the HONGQI family DNA while managing to endow the four-door luxury saloon with a personality all unto its own.

At the front end, a bold chrome grille with 12 vertical rods announces the car’s arrival, with the striking red line HONGQI logo running from halfway down the bonnet to the centre point of the prominent grille. This feature is flanked by angular LED headlights and sleek, vertically-stacked fog lamps. At the sides, the considerable length of the Ousado is underscored by the flawlessly-sculptured body lines. Measuring no less than five metres and with a wheelbase close to three metres – this is no small saloon. Further adding to the luxurious appeal exuded by this first-class car are the 18-inch HONGQI customised alloy wheels, the shark fin radio antenna, the high-quality door handles and the red HONGQI badges near the front doors. Shifting our attention to the back end, we instantly noticed the cross-through rear light that bestows this model with a real sporty feel. This undertone of athleticism is further enhanced by the chromed dual-exhaust pipes neatly integrated into the rear apron.

Interior

Upon keyless entry, we were welcomed by a perfect blend of space, comfort, aesthetics and technology. The supportive, Active Motion front seats with lumbar control and memory function provided the perfect vantage point from which we could fully appreciate the effort put into creating a luxury vehicle of this standard.

During the day, the panoramic sunroof provides plenty of natural light, while at night, the ambient interior lighting helps to create a relaxing yet lavish environment – both revealing the mastery of the cabin’s design.

No matter where we looked, our eyes were met by high-quality materials, finishes and trims. All seating throughout the vehicle features temperature control, along with bespoke thread work that looks to be hand sewn. Thanks to the ample length of the vehicle, rear-seat passengers can enjoy almost a full metre of leg space. Adding to the comfortable and convenient nature of the Ousado are the multi-zone climate control and power windows. The Ousado’s largest-in-class luggage compartment features a power rear liftgate and provides 573-litres of storage, a capacity that can be greatly increased with the rear seats folded down.

Infotainment & Technology

This latest offering from HONGQI is not just a pretty face. It has been fully equipped with the latest technology to set it above its would-be competitors.

The responsive infotainment system is operated through a 12.6-inch tablet-like display mounted on the centre console and a clean-looking digital cluster. This system is compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Ousado is also fitted with wi-fi, AUX, hands-free, an SD Card, a USB connection and Bluetooth.

Further aiding the driver is the state-of-the-art head-up display that provides information without eyes needing to be taken off the road.

Additional noteworthy features include the premium Dynaudio, 12-speaker sound system complete with subwoofer, and the convenient wireless charging pad.

Performance & Safety

The all-new Ousado houses a high-performance, aluminium, two-litre turbocharged engine coupled with an Aisin eight-speed automatic transmission. The potent powertrain produces 224hp and a maximum torque of 340Nm. We managed to push the new saloon from 0-100km/h in a respectable 7.8 seconds. Despite the power on offer, the Ousado delivers a fuel-efficient performance of 6.6-litres per 100km in Eco mode.

With four modes to select from including Eco, Comfort, Sport and Custom, the Ousado offers a versatile on-road driving experience. As we effortlessly cruised across the Island, we appreciated the car’s acoustic technology that blocks out almost all exterior sounds, providing a relaxing environment to watch the miles soundlessly roll by.

HONGQI have included a full suite of driver assistance and safety features in their all-new saloon. These include, but are not limited to, lane departure warning, blind spot sensor, tyre pressure monitor, a hill assist system, intelligent cruise control, collision avoidance, stability control, park assist, ABS brakes, brake assist, ISOFIX points, a built-in 360-degree camera and nine airbags.

A NEW ERA OF FOLDABLE SMARTPHONE INNOVATION

FACT continues its quest to uncover the very latest and greatest gadgets, this time with the new Huawei Mate X3.

Design

The X3 boasts an elegant yet durable design, complete with an aluminium frame. It comes in two colourways – dark green vegan leather and black Feather-Sand Glass. This model is not only compact but ultra-light and ultra-thin. At 5.3mm unfolded, it’s the thinnest smartphone we’ve ever encountered.

Screens

When opened, the new X3 unfolded flat without a noticeable centre gap between the two symmetrical halves or an unsightly crease on the foldable panel. This is thanks to Huawei’s new advanced hinge mechanism allowing opening to various degrees for different situations and uses. The 6.4-inch 3D OLED exterior screen has a 1080p resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. Although smaller than the previous generation, it features Kunlun Glass exterior protection and IPX8-rated water resistance – the first Huawei smartphone to boast this quality. The X3 also features an impact-resistant, 7.85-inch foldable OLED screen. It provides an ultra-high resolution of 2496 x 2224, along with the highest pixel density in the industry at 426 PPI. This model also delivers a 120Hz refresh rate – 30Hz more than last year’s model. We appreciated the split screen feature of the X3, which allows the user to select between a vertical or a horizontal split.

Functionality

The international version of the Huawei Mate X3 runs EMUI 13.1 and features Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 hardware. We found the operating system fast and exceptionally responsive, experiencing no problem with lagging or picture quality. The stereo speakers at both ends add to the appeal with ample volume and pure sound. The X3 also comes with an impressive 256GB or 512GB of storage. The X3 supports Huawei mobile services. These include

Petal Search, Petal Maps and the App Gallery Store. You can still search for certain Google apps and download them through an app repository or a developer website. Huawei still has no access to 5G networks.

Cameras

Lovers of photography will appreciate the X3’s Ultra Vision XMAGE Camera system. This impressive setup includes a 50MP Ultra Vision Main Camera, a 13MP Ultra-Wide Angle Camera and a 12MP Periscope Telephoto Camera that supports 5x optical zoom. We found them all to capture excellent detail and trueto-life colours. For selfies, the 8MP front-facing camera in both the cover and inner screen proved more than capable. This smartphone also allowed us to take selfies with the rear cameras using the cover display as a viewfinder. The X3’s main camera, however, proved a cut above the rest in this area and can also record video in up to 4k resolution at 30fps, providing superb quality, fine detailing and vivid colours.

Battery

The sizable 4800mAh battery supports 66W wired Huawei SuperCharge and 50W wireless Huawei SuperCharge. This means ample power to last throughout the day. We managed to recharge the X3 from 0–70% in just half an hour.

Our Verdict

The new Huawei Mate X3 is a beautifully designed, capable smartphone proving to be a game-changer in the premium flip phone segment. ✤

In Conversation with… Mohamed Al Kayed

The natural business leader, Adviser to Sevens Holding's Chairman and the first Bahraini to win Business Elite’s 40 Under 40 Award, shares the secrets behind his success, his organisation’s accomplishments and what makes Bahrain special.

fact magazine 62 • 5 OVER 5

Congratulations on winning! Please share the major highlights of your professional journey up to the point of this achievement. Thank you. I am greatly honoured to receive this award from such a prestigious institution. It is testament to the support and guidance that I have received from His Excellency Shaikh Khalifa bin Rashid Al Khalifa, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sevens Holding. Through his directives and leadership, both I and the team at Sevens Holding have been provided the opportunity to achieve and witness the successful execution of key projects and the attraction of reputable global brands in line with the company’s goals and aspirations. I began my professional career as an accountant at Arcapita Bahrain where I was able to practice my educational experience and receive on-the-job skills that allowed me to quickly grow into a Senior Accountant position. I joined Sevens Holding as CEO to lead the hospitality and food and beverage (F&B) sections. Having received such an opportunity at a younger age was incredible as it allowed me the chance to work closely with His Excellency to execute key projects in an extremely challenging but impactful role. This role accelerated my career and the development of my leadership skills as failure was not an option and success was the only goal.

To which personality traits do you pin your success? My success is the result of hard work, learning from failure and persistence. Throughout my journey at Sevens Holding, I learned that you may hit road blocks but you need to problem-solve and find alternate solutions – never give up. Success takes time and you will go through trials and errors along the way but the end result is always worth the challenge. This is the key to my success today and I am confident that my willingness to see projects through till the end is a main factor to my accomplishments.

Please describe Sevens Holding and what you do in a nutshell. Sevens Holding is a Bahrain-based holding company with interests in a variety of industries including hospitality, real estate and investments. The company was founded in 2011 by H.E. Shaikh Khalifa, the grandson of H.R.H. Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa,

the late Prime Minister of Bahrain. Since its establishment, the company has built a proven track record of success having developed key real estate projects such as Royal Saray and The Walk whilst continuing to attract reputable global F&B brands such as Scalini, Bagatelle, Opa and Black Tap amongst others. As part of the company’s goals and aspirations, it continuously seeks ways in which it can support the national economy by attracting global brands to the Kingdom and promoting the prosperous tourism and hospitality sectors. My role at Sevens Holding is now as an adviser to ensure that I support His Excellency Shaikh Khalifa’s vision in line with the company’s goals and aspirations of becoming a leading hospitality provider in the Kingdom. The company’s portfolio comprises significant global brands and I am confident that it will continue to be a leader in bringing global brands to local markets.

You’ve worked with some of the top names in the real estate, hospitality and F&B, and transportation industries. What, in your view, is Bahrain’s USP when compared to its regional counterparts?

I have had the privilege of working with reputable brands and companies within various sectors and in my view, the Kingdom is recognised amongst its regional peers for its business-friendly environment, strategic location in the heart of the Gulf with easy entry, established infrastructure and, most importantly, its visionary leadership. I believe that Bahrain's USPs will continue to attract investment and business in the years to come. The country is well-positioned to become a regional hub for trade, commerce and tourism.

Do you have a secret talent or is there something about yourself that you can tell us that most people wouldn’t know?

I am a doer who is not afraid to take on new challenges. I am always ready for a challenge and not afraid to fail because I know that failure is a part of learning and growing. I would like to thank H.E. Shaikh Khalifa for trusting and empowering me to grow under his leadership. ✤

• VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN
An alumna of Le Cordon Bleu, Chef Hessa Al Khalifa of Curious Diner at Al Liwan, talks about her love for food and achieving her dream of opening her own restaurant.

What sparked your love affair with food and when did you realise you wanted to pursue it as a profession?

The origin story of how my love for food began really has to do with cartoons! Back in the day, we didn’t have 24-hour cartoon channels on TV. So, when the morning show would end around 11am, I found myself in the kitchen with my grandmothers while they were preparing lunch. I was so curious as to what they would do there, from preparing the fresh fish for a safi dish to making a curry with the fresh lamb and vegetables that came from the farm that morning. Everything about the kitchen fascinated me, from sourcing ingredients to presenting a final dish with love; I knew I just had to be a part of this world somehow. So, when I grew up and learned that I could make a career out of it, there was no turning back.

Please tell us more about your new restaurant Curious Diner at Al Liwan.

Curious Diner is a retro futuristic space, where classic diner décor elements have been reimagined. The interior is influenced by the ‘50s and ‘60s mid-century aesthetic, a little bit of Wes Anderson and The Jetsons as the idyllic futuristic dream. We have, for instance, custom-made art depicting Bahrain as a utopian, futuristic place, while holding on to key elements from the past. I have also added personal elements; two of our table tops are fitted with the same checkered tiles from my kitchen at home. We serve comfort food such as burgers, milkshakes and the cheesiest mac n cheese. We will also serve experimental comfort food from around the world. This is a space where you come to enjoy a good meal, have fun with friends and family, and leave with a smile and a full belly. People of all ages can hang out, celebrate a birthday or just celebrate yourself.

Which are your favourite restaurants in Bahrain and why? For Bahrain there are too many to mention! I love frequenting

Wa Bento for the authentic Japanese flavours; I try to go once a week to sample their weekly bentos. Other Japanese restaurants I enjoy are Gyuto and Mirai. Ricco is an amazing Italian restaurant in Adliya; the shrimp risotto with orange is stunning, I never thought those flavours could work together but they do! Green Bar Cafe has a special place in my heart, I just love the attention to detail they put into all their healthy yet delicious dishes. There’s nothing quite like Seoul in Adliya for Korean barbecue, it’s just too good. And I have to give a special shout out to Haji’s Cafe, it's one of the first spots I’d take any of my out-of-town friends to try a taste of Bahrain.

What is your signature dish and how did you develop it? Is it served at Curious Diner?

What shocks me most to this day is being known for my burgers, which I started from home during the first week of the pandemic. All I wanted was a good burger, something comforting; but then, all the restaurants around me, unfortunately, were closing. It was such an uncertain time and the only thing I knew for certain was that I needed comfort food. So, I went to my kitchen and made the first burger for myself. I then shared it with family and friends and, at their behest, started selling it online from my website. It really just snowballed from there so, I had to ask myself seriously, if not now, when? So, that’s the day Curious Diner started taking form, from just an idea on paper that I wrote back in 2019 to a full-fledged restaurant in 2023. Yes, the Curious Burger is served at the diner along with many more comforting dishes. I even collaborated with CUT by Wolfgang Puck and they had it on their menu for three days. Keep your eyes peeled for new and special dishes. This is only the beginning, and we couldn’t be successful without the strong and loving community that has rallied around us; for that we are truly grateful. ✤

A RENEWED EXPERIENCE

Lawson Misquitta visited the newly renovated Fiamma Italian restaurant at the Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa and experienced authentic Sicilian hospitality at its best.

Stepping into the hotel lobby, my colleague and I were immediately met with a lively scene on account of a wedding ceremony to be held later that day at the property. However, we were there for another purpose, one that had us both quite upbeat. We were visiting the newly renovated contemporary Italian restaurant Fiamma, which now boasts an exciting new menu prepared by Sofitel’s Executive Chef Marco Terranova. The first to greet us on arrival, he was warm, enthusiastic and extremely passionate as he described his intention behind the new menu. Born and raised in Augusta, Sicily, Chef Marco outlined to us the carefully curated gastronomic experience that’s inspired by the colours and flavours of Sicily, as well as his influences from Spain, France and North Africa. He emphasised the importance of using the freshest seasonal ingredients to create delicious and authentic preparations and, in no time, had us quite enthralled. The restaurant’s revamped interior now reflects a distinctive décor with tasteful and elegant details that exude the true essence of rustic Italy. Spread across the space were familiar Sicilian motifs such as authentic hand-painted Caltagirone ceramic plates and ceramic pinecones that are regarded as a symbol of wellness and good fortune.

Once seated we were served some focaccia bread that was beautifully golden-brown all over but soft and fluffy on the inside. As I scanned the menu, I also noticed that every dish had a specific suggested grape paring to enhance the dining experience, a nice touch.

The meal kicked off with the first round of antipasti that included the Carpaccio di Manzo and Tartare di Gamberoni. The carpaccio was thinly sliced beef tenderloin topped with a flavourful truffle vinaigrette, roasted oyster mushrooms and shavings of truffle pecorino – every morsel was a delight. Tartare di Gamberoni was a light and refreshing starter with prawns, a simple tomato confit, finely chopped shallots and garlic croutons that provided every bite with a terrific crunchy texture.

Next, was the Mare Su Terra, one of Chef Marco’s signature dishes. He wasn’t pulling any punches here as I was informed that the red mullet had been slow cooked at a very low temperature with Caprino cheese imbuing the fish with an almost creamy flavour. It was then topped with thinly sliced carpaccio truffle that complemented the fish with its level of umami flavour.

fact magazine 70 • CULINARY SPOTLIGHT

Accompanying that was a specially marinated, semi poached prawn that was roasted and then generously topped with caviar. The decadence didn’t end there as I was treated to the molecular gastronomic delight of lemon potato foam that was also part of this sensory masterpiece. The grand symphony of flavours left us absolutely impressed!

The final starter was the Polpette Alla Griglia – perfectly grilled, delicious, citrus-scented meatballs that came with a smooth and buttery purée of charcoal-roasted celery root and cauliflower that I couldn’t help but smother every bite with. The twist here was the thin slices of candied orange rind that when mixed into a bite completely elevated the experience. Truly genius!

Within minutes we were served some spectacular pastas, all of which we were told are prepared daily, in-house from scratch. The first being Norma, a traditional preparation with penne pasta cooked in a simple but deeply flavourful tomato sauce alongside fried eggplant and topped with grated ricotta salata. The next, Paccherri Al Limone, consisted of pasta tossed in an undeniably ravishing prawn bisque and finished with lemon scent. I must admit, I happily doused the remaining focaccia bread with the sauce of this dish and guiltlessly enjoyed every bite. The final pasta offering was the gnocchi which was prepared to perfection and was one of the best I’ve tasted on the island.

This was followed by my personal favourite of the meal, the Tonno Alla Griglia – a tuna fillet grilled to medium rare perfection brushed with paprika oil that gave it a unique smoked flavour and a pinch of heat. It was then set upon a bed of savoury eggplant caponatina, topped with artisanal chips and served with a succulent dollop of buffalo mozzarella. Prepared flawlessly, this dish had my taste buds rejoicing.

The final main course was another special preparation by Chef Marco, the Pizzoli – a double layered parmesan-crusted pizza that is native to Sortino, a town in Sicily. This particular one was stuffed with mozzarella, olives, anchovies, semi-dried tomato sautéed in garlic, along with spinach. A first for my colleague and me, every single bite was a revelation to us.

For dessert, we had the Tiramisu which exceeded our expectations. From the subdued sweetness of the mascarpone and sabayon cream to the dreamy savoiardi coffee biscuits and the bitter cocoa powder that rounded everything off exquisitely. Each spoonful was irresistible. We had to try the Trittico di Cannoli, a popular Sicilian pastry. This one had a decadent filling of ricotta cheese and chocolate chip and pistachio cream, topped with a tart raspberry ganache.

Chef Marco truly impressed us while living up to his promise of serving up a traditional but inspired culinary feast that’s rooted in his Sicilian homeland but also influenced through his personal life experiences from across the globe. As I left Fiamma, I was certain that I’ve found a new favourite Italian spot on the island. With the charming new décor, excellent service and the wonderful food, I’m quite sure that it will be yours too. ✤

TASTES OF THE OCEAN

Liz O’Reilly headed to The Crowne Plaza Bahrain’s much-loved Seafood Night for a fishy feast second to none.
DINING DELIGHT •

The Crowne Plaza used to be a regular haunt in my pre-Covid, party-girl days but it’s been a while since I’ve visited so I was interested to see what’s changed and what’s remained the same.

Arriving at the reception on an early Thursday evening, the place was busy with lots of people coming and going as we made our way to La Mosaique, the name of the hotel's all-day dining restaurant spelled out above the door in colourful, art-deco-style stained glass..

Inside, pale golden wood, comfy seating and a capacious island food counter bearing more of that gorgeous stained glass set the scene for a seafood feast in bistro-style surroundings.

I’m a big fan of seafood and could see I was going to be spoiled for choice from the sheer number of options available, so I made sure to take a really good look before making my selections. The salad section was abundant with Tuna Niçoise – the sunny egg yolks forming a smiling contrast to the shiny green beans; red peppers, cucumbers and baby leaves mixed with herbscattered chunks of white fish; bright pink tuna sitting on a bed of mango salsa; and squid rings tossed in with green peppers, tomatoes and onions. The aquatic items sat alongside a range of regular salad staples such as feta and watermelon – one of my all-time favourites (try it liberally doused in wasabi, it’s lush) – spiced chick-peas, a big bowl of mixed citrus segments and lots of chopped crudités, perfect to accompany the many dips and sauces on offer.

On the other side of the counter, I was delighted to find a row of gleaming silver chafing dishes which opened to reveal all manner of oceanic goodness. The Calamari in Back Pepper Sauce looked and smelled amazing but the Seafood Thermidor was calling my name – loudly – so I served myself a bowlful of the rich, creamy, concoction. Lightly cheesy and so mellow with voluptuous chunks of shrimp and fish, I was in heaven just breathing in the mouth-

fact magazine 74

watering aroma, which delivered with a deeply satisfying flavour. My dining companion, after sampling the tuna and mango salsa – which she declared sweet and refreshing – went for the seafood with corn in a Cajun spicy sauce. It’s said that flavour is a combination of taste and smell, and this was one dish that fully demonstrated the statement. A mix of spices gave rise to a rich aromatic steam, the generous pieces of seafood bathed in a fragrant gravy with a considered bite of heat. Delicious. Next, we moved on to the fresh fish counter taking the opportunity to chat with the chefs before making our selection. From needle fish and sherri to crabs and prawns, all were fresh and clean and we were spoiled for choice.

Newly appointed Executive Chef Carlo Cirone is a master of his art who is well known as a veteran of the island's culinary scene. And he and his team were happy to guide us in our selections. I chose red mullet and, a new find for me, andak – a native Gulf fish that I have not come across before. I was tempted to request a fancy cooking method but decided on simple flame grilling with just a touch of seasoning and my choice was good. The fish were perfect – the skins, which I would not usually eat, lightly salty and crispy, the mullet soft and juicy and the andak firm but still tender. Here, I must confess, that I am a slightly lazy diner and I found them a bit bony so, next time, I will ask for them to be filleted. But the bones were worth it for the reward of the tasty fishy feast. And now to the pièce de resistance! My friend chose the cigale –slipper lobster tails from Oman – served in the traditional French thermidor style. Herby, rich with heavy cream and cheese and the delicious, piquant tang of English mustard smothering the gently yielding, sweet lobster meat. We discovered we had saved the best for last and, though almost replete, we managed to polish the plate clean between us and vowed to return for another serving – not to mention a trip to the well-stocked sushi section and a chance to try the intriguing salmon shawarma - the only place on the island you will find it.

Not wanting to leave you without a taste of dessert, we took a short break on the outdoor terrace enjoying the balmy weather before heading to the extensive sweet counter. From eclairs bursting with cream to cappuccino cake, cute little pots of panna cotta, the traditional Umm Ali and even a large platter of fresh fruit, there was something to suit every palate.

I went for the orange slice – a super-moist sponge cake bursting with citrus flavour and topped with a sweet date for balance. My dining companion chose chocolate mousse cake and found it rich and satisfying.

If you want to tuck into unlimited seafood, check out this extravaganza which runs at La Mosaique every Thursday from 7pm to 11pm. Or head down on Wednesdays when you'll discover a real treat for meat lovers with Carnivore Night where you’ll find all manner of meats cooked to your liking.

The atmosphere is chilled and the welcome warm, so what are you waiting for? ✤

FUN FRIDAY

The K Hotel knows how to do brunch right. That’s what Melissa Nazareth discovered when she headed down for a Friday feast.

• FOODIE CORNER

What would you expect from a brunch? Good food, a lively ambience and space to unwind? Me too. Everything else, in my opinion, is a distraction. The Friday Family Brunch hosted by The K Hotel at KOLORS restaurant hits the spot.

I was impressed with the variety of dishes on offer – this one’s a value for money deal! At the same time, it provides all the trimmings of a four-star hotel experience. There’s a kids’ corner in a secluded area of the restaurant, with seating arrangements, which means parents with young ones can enjoy while their cubs have some fun of their own. Having said this, the brunch is perfect for a group of friends too.

We reached slightly early – the brunch runs from 12pm to 4pm –and found that the staff were busy with last-minute arrangements. This, however, didn’t deter them from greeting us with a smile, a testament to good service, which continued throughout.

We toured the buffet, which featured a selection of salads, soups and hot and cold mezze. I particularly liked the cured tuna and sour cream appetiser. My companion swooped in on the grilled vegetables. She has had them before and is a big fan. You know a restaurant is good when they get the simple things right. There was a variety of breads and pastries; it’s good to have a balance of breakfast and lunch items, which is what ‘brunch’ is all about. We also tucked into sausages, turkey bacon, hash browns and beans.

I had to make a round just for the sushi. There were many types, all artistically assembled using fresh, top-quality ingredients. A variety of cold cuts and other items was also on display, including chicken galantine and seafood terrine, both similar in

fact magazine 78 • FOODIE CORNER

taste and texture to pâté. My picks were the mini bruschetta, specifically the one smeared with cream cheese and crowned with a coral-hued salmon ribbon.

We took our time to savour every mouthful, pairing our choices with selected beverages from the bar, while the band serenaded guests. There are juices and mocktails too; we tried the fruit smoothie, an ombre sunset in a glass, which was refreshing.

By the time we got to the hammour, drizzled with a delicate lemon butter sauce, and the moreish beef Wellington, the talented entertainers from the UK had picked up the pace. I loved their energy; a table of enthusiastic, well-mannered nearby guests asked them to rap and, although this wasn’t part of their original agenda, or so it appeared, they sportingly obliged. They continued to interact with guests, evidently enjoying themselves and their vibe rubbed off on us too. The soul of any brunch is its vibe and KOLORS has a spirited one.

The hammour, a must-try, was flaky and moist, with a crispy skin. It was lightly seasoned but being a fresh catch, had heaps of flavour. The velvety lemon butter sauce, laid on like sunshine, lent a slight tang, which complemented the fish.

I’ve heard so much about Gordon Ramsay’s beef Wellington. So, when I spotted KOLORS’ creation of this iconic dish, I knew I had to try it. Being my first time, I had very high expectations – I wasn’t disappointed. The beef was succulent, encased in a divine medley of mushrooms and spinach, which, in turn, was enveloped by flaky, buttery puff pastry. It was delicious both with and without the peppery mushroom sauce.

Excited to try the grills, we browsed the seafood counter, which

featured all kinds of crustaceans and marine treasures, from crab, lobster and jumbo prawns to Norwegian salmon, scallops and more. We were really spoiled for choice. Matching this was the meat station displaying a variety of marinaded items and fresh cuts. We watched the chef as he did a fabulous job on the grill in the open kitchen. The result was a plate of succulent lamb chops, oozing juices that mingled with heady spices and aromatics, and Bahraini tikka with its familiar black lemon spice. The prawns were equally delectable – springy, sweet and cooked to perfection. The open kitchen, flaunting a mosaic tiled wall, also has a newly installed oven for breads and pizzas made to order, which offers a rustic touch. Other live counters include pasta and shawarma.

We were too full to try all the mains but noticed that there was something to suit every palate, from chicken biryani to Szechuan noodles. To top our feast, we indulged in the many sweet delights on display. Our favourites were the chocolate cake, eclair and crème brulée.

Whether you’re looking for a Friday meal with family or an afternoon to enjoy with friends, I couldn’t recommend this brunch enough. It’s unpretentious and straightforward. I look forward to returning, to try the many varieties on offer and, perhaps, even make a song request to the band. ✤

A ROMANTIC RETREAT

Romance took centre stage as Apple Sharma escaped to The Domain Hotel and Spa for an unforgettable mid-week staycation.

STAYCATION •

When it comes to planning the perfect romantic getaway, it's all about finding the right balance of luxury, intimacy and relaxation. Recently, my partner and I had the pleasure of experiencing the new Romantic Indulgence package at The Domain Hotel and Spa and, I must say, it exceeded our expectations in every way. From the moment we arrived, we were embraced by an atmosphere of romance and indulgence that set the tone for an unforgettable escape. Set against the backdrop of stunning city views in the heart of the Diplomatic Area, The Domain Hotel and Spa has recently undergone a remarkable transformation, transitioning from a family-friendly destination to an exclusive adults-only oasis. This shift makes perfect sense, considering that the chic design and sharp edges throughout the hotel’s facilities make it less suitable for children. With this new concept, the hotel has redefined itself as a boutique urban luxury retreat, creating an environment that is tailor-made for couples seeking an intimate getaway and corporate travellers in search of a relaxing sanctuary without any distractions. The hotel's distinct ‘Stay, Work, Play’ theme blends effortlessly with this new adult-friendly direction, ensuring refined and tranquil surroundings.

From the moment we stepped out of our car, we were warmly greeted by the hotel's valet, who promptly collected our luggage and ushered us inside. Ascending to Level 16, where the lobby is located, we were met with an inviting atmosphere adorned with beautiful art. The reception staff welcomed us with genuine warmth, offering us coffee and sweets, setting the stage for the exceptional service that awaited us. The check-in process was efficient and we were delighted to receive an early check-in at 12pm, as well as a generous late check-out at 3pm.

Our Luxury Suite, located on the 30th floor, immediately set the stage for our romantic retreat. This non-smoking suite spanned 72sq/m and boasted a bright living room area with expansive windows, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city. To our added delight, we were greeted with a generous fruit basket and assortment of dates and chocolates. The living area was tastefully adorned with gold and purple accents, while the bedroom exuded elegance with its golden hues and quilted criss-cross elements, creating a cosy and opulent atmosphere. Separating the living area from the bedroom and ensuite bathroom was a small foyer, adding an extra layer of privacy. The bedroom featured a plush king-size bed, accompanied by a spacious dressing area with ample mirrors and storage space. The suite was equipped with modern amenities, including two large screen TVs, a convenient coffee pod machine and electronically operated curtains, adding a touch of refined elegance to our stay. However, the pièce de résistance was the impressive Jacuzzi, exclusive to the Luxury Suite. The charming setup, complete with flower decorations, rose petals and swan-shaped towel arrangements, created a truly intimate ambience.

One of the highlights of our stay was the couple's massage at the VIE Spa. We were warmly welcomed by our skilled masseuses, Sonam and Wilma, who led us to a beautifully scented room. The invigorating oil massage, using our chosen lavender oil, worked wonders in melting away our stress and tension. The heated beds and rose petal decorations added to the overall mood, allowing us to fully unwind and release the stress of everyday life. Afterward, we enjoyed a cup of green tea before taking a refreshing dip in the indoor infinity VIE Sky Pool on the 36th floor, while enjoying the stunning city view.

After working up an appetite, we headed to Figs & Olives on Level 16 for a delicious lunch. The restaurant's vibrant décor, with large windows, lime green and purple furniture and potted plants, created a calm and welcoming setting. During the day, the eatery is bright and colourful, matching the healthy menu of sandwiches, salads, smoothies and juices. In the evening, candlelit tables transform it into a cosy haven. Our meal began with the super power quinoa salad, along with smashed avocado and poached egg sandwich and grilled vegetables and halloumi cheese sandwich, all freshly prepared and incredibly flavoursome. As an accompaniment, we enjoyed a berry smoothie, fresh orange juice and a cold Spanish latte. The attentive and friendly waiter provided excellent recommendations and, for dessert, we couldn't resist the almond croissant and chocolate Cronut from the pastry counter. The art lounge opposite the coffee shop showcased a tasteful selection of artworks, adding to the hotel's overall creative theme.

As daylight began to fade, we made our way to the Txoko lounge on the top floor, Level 36, where sundowners awaited us. The lounge's suave setting, combined with the skilled craftsmanship of the barman, ensured that our evening began on a high note. Sipping on expertly crafted cocktails, we marvelled at the stunning sunset view, while indulging in tasty bar bites of chicken tacos and prawn cheese balls. It was the perfect prelude to the culinary adventure that awaited us later in the evening.

As the sun gracefully set, we eagerly ventured to Le Sauvage restaurant to try its popular Steak Night dinner, available every Wednesday. An enchanting atmosphere set the stage for an unforgettable dining experience, as we were escorted to a cosy candlelit corner table, with large windows providing incredible views of the city's twinkling skyline. Our table was adorned with rose petals in a heart shape and soft live piano music gracefully serenaded us in the background. The restaurant's open kitchen also added a touch of culinary theatre to the evening.

The gastronomic journey commenced with an array of tantalising starters, including freshly baked bread accompanied by pesto and olive oil; beef bresaola with asparagus; and an exquisite avocado and beetroot salad. For the main course, my partner enjoyed a succulent 600g beef tenderloin steak served with creamy spinach, mixed herb salad and perfectly seasoned potato wedges. The

steak, cooked to perfection and beautifully garnished with garlic and rosemary, was a true highlight of the meal and was elevated by the accompaniment of both a mushroom and a pepper sauce. As a vegetarian, I opted for the homemade ravioli, with spinach and ricotta filling in a rich tomato sauce – a comforting dish with a burst of flavours.

To end our meal on a sweet note, we savoured the salted caramel chocolate tart, a rich dessert that would satisfy any chocolate lover. The brownie cheesecake provided a decadent combination of textures and flavours, topped with a raspberry rose sorbet adding a refreshing touch. Overall, our experience was exceptional. The intimate setting, beautiful views, delicious food and impeccable service made for a truly memorable evening.

In the morning, we returned to Le Sauvage, now an inviting breakfast setup with daytime city views. The extensive spread catered to all tastes and preferences – from traditional favourites to Middle Eastern dishes – there was something for every palate. Freshly cooked eggs and a refreshing fruit and salad station provided a healthy start to the day.

Amidst our indulgences, we couldn't help but appreciate the hotel's commitment to safety and hygiene. Despite the relaxed Covid-19 rules in the country, a note in our room assured us of the hotel’s rigorous cleaning protocols. The staff wore gloves in all areas and hand sanitisers were conveniently placed in the lifts and public spaces, providing additional reassurance.

What truly set this staycation apart was the undeniable

romance that permeated every aspect of our stay. The small touches, such as rose petals and candlelit setups, added an intimate ambience that swept us off our feet. The attention to detail and the thoughtfulness of the staff made the experience nothing short of extraordinary.

I would highly recommend The Domain Hotel and Spa for a weekday or weekend staycation, whether you're celebrating a special occasion or simply looking to treat your special someone to a romantic indulgence. It’s a wonderful experience to escape the ordinary and immerse yourself in a world of luxury and romance at this adult-friendly haven. ✤

Beef John Wick: Chapter 4

Need to Know:

Beef is a dark comedy-drama miniseries on Netflix that begins with a road rage incident between two strangers, a failing contractor and an unfulfilled entrepreneur. This sparks a tit-for-tat feud that leads to escalating acts of revenge that bring out their darkest impulses.

Director: Lee Sung Jin

Cast : Steven Yeun, Ali Wong, Joseph Lee, Young Mazino, Ashley Park, Justin H. Min

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Danny Cho (Yeun) is a failing contractor, who’s down on his luck, trying to get his business up and running, saving up to buy a plot of land for his elderly Korean parents, and, in the midst of all that, is also supporting his younger brother who’s obsessed with crypto and making fast money but doesn’t help Danny in any way.

On the other hand, there’s Amy (Wong) – a successful entrepreneur on the verge of closing a major deal and with a seemingly picture-perfect family. But she shares a strained and disconnected relationship with her husband George (Lee) who stays at home taking care of their daughter while indulging in pottery and meditation. Amy is caught up furthering her career and, in turn, sacrifices family time. One afternoon, as they’re both barely keeping it together, Danny and Amy unexpectedly nearly crash into each other in a parking lot. The butterfly effect of events that follow the disastrous encounter makes for some great television. The show boasts sharp writing and compelling character arcs that explore the various complex aspects of human nature in relation to issues such as unresolved anger, pride and vengeance, and how a nudge in the wrong direction could take your life down unforeseen paths.

Need to Know:

Everybody’s favourite hitman returns to the cinemas with the latest instalment in the John Wick franchise and this time it pulls no punches and leaves no ammo unspent. Still excommunicado but even more determined to take back his freedom regardless of the obstacles in his path, Wick is finally ready to exact his revenge against the High Table governing the underworld.

Director: Chad Stahelski

Cast : Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Ian McShane, Hiroyuki Sanada, Donnie Yen, Clancy Brown, Lance Reddick

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Initially planned as a one-off movie by director Chad Stahelski, previously Keanu Reeves’ stunt double on the Matrix movies, the John Wick series has come a long way from its humble cinematic start. The latest picks up from where John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum left off. After somehow surviving the massive fall off the Continental New York’s roof, John Wick has recovered while hiding underground and has been preparing to exact revenge against the High Table. He travels to Morocco and kills the Elder, the ‘one who sits above the Table’, setting in motion the events of this movie, which, like the previous one, is brimming with non-stop action — fun and entertaining. But this time around, the film manages to do more as it captures some standout cinematography on several occasions as Wick finds himself in breathtaking scenes set in Tokyo, Berlin, Paris and New York. Four movies in and despite all the carnage, the underlying message has stayed the same – don’t be terrible to people – you never know the difficult time they could be going through, and, most importantly, be nice to dogs.

ALTERNATIVE/INDIE, FOLK Everything Harmony

The Lemon Twigs are an American rock band formed by brothers Brian and Michael D'Addario. Everything Harmony is their fourth studio album released via Captured Tracks.

The LP offers a variety with slow-paced, melodious numbers and faster beats. However, there’s a certain softness to all the songs, partly rendered by the quality of the vocalists’ voices and partly by the acoustic guitar – a major element; drums and cymbals, tambourines and the electric guitar also feature.

Songs such as Corner of My Eye and Any Time of Day showcase the artists’ vocal range with parts alternating between high and even higher pitches. The opening track When Winter Comes Around features bass vocals – just brilliant!

Exploring a wide range of emotions –melancholia, nostalgia, desire, yearning, hopefulness, love, disbelief, confusion… the lyrics signal possible vulnerability, something listeners can effortlessly resonate with.

On Every Day Is the Worst Day of My Life, the title repeats in a loop, creating a meditative mood. As such it stands out from the other songs.

The title track Everything Harmony features the piano, giving church-choir vibes. Elevated on sections by the crisp and complex violin and the rich and vibrant cello, it’s quite different to the rest of the album. Every creation offers something distinct to enjoy, making it a pleasure to listen to.

DANCE/ELECTRONIC The Love Invention

Alison Goldfrapp is an English musician and record producer. She is popular as the vocalist of Goldfrapp, the English electronic music duo, and has also collaborated with other artists. Now, she has released her solo album The Love Intention – at the age of 56, proving that age is no bar – through Bertelsmann Music Group. She describes it as her tribute to the dance-floor.

It’s difficult to marry a genre like electronic dance, which is futuristic sounding, even robotic, with the concept of love – an emotion. However, this artist does it with ease and panache. The opener Never Stop, a catchy, foot-tapping number is a repeated reminder to ‘Never stop love, never stop loving’. Love Invention explores an unprecedented experience. She wonders ‘Is this real or not?/ And I've never had a love/ That felt so good’.

On Digging Deeper Now, she peels off layers to understand the feeling called love, which has changed everything and breathed ‘life back into’ her; she knows she’ll ‘find a way to the heart’.

The album unravels many such nuances of the emotion. It’s worth mentioning that it’s not just the lyrics but also Alison’s voice that lends a dreamy feel to the songs. She is rightly known for her versatile vocals; on this LP, featuring synthpop, trance tunes, drum and bass and electronic elements of all kinds, it shines through.

SATIRE/HUMOROUS FICTION Girlfriend On Mars

A novel very much of our age, this debut offering provides futuristic fun with a satirical look at humanity’s pursuit of fame in the face of environmental crisis, and we love the premise.

Amber Kivinen leaves her humdrum boyfriend of 14 years, Kevin, and joins a reality show where, among an assortment of science nerds, would-be influencers and others, she is competing for the chance to join the first human mission to Mars. Meanwhile Kevin is glued to the telly trying to work out why his one true love is so determined to leave the planet.

CRIME THRILLER Zero Days

Described by the New York Times as the ‘new Agatha Christie’ we’re very excited about this latest offering from Ruth Ware. Security experts Jack and husband Gabe are hired by companies to break into buildings and hack security systems. But after a routine assignment goes horribly wrong, Jack arrives home to find her husband dead and she’s the prime suspect. A heart-pounding mystery unfolds as she goes on the run and tries to clear her name while drawing ever closer to the real killer – with all the danger that implies.
