Eat,Pray, Give

“Always have a willing hand to help someone, you might be the only one that does.” ―- Roy T. Bennett,

I

can hardly believe that it’s already time for Ramadan. May will mark the start of the Holy Month when Muslims all over the world observe fast from surise to sunset. As I try and get ready for my own Ramadan journey with changing my sleeping pattern, eating consciously and general mental prep for the 30 days of fasting, I’m learning more and more that this special time is one of celebration, reflection and, most of all, sharing and giving. With that said, I’m constantly appreciative for calling the Gulf home, where Ramadan is the most spiritual and beautiful occasion of coming together with family, friends and neighbours to be thankful for all the great things we have in life. And if you keep up with me on instagram, you’ll see that food is absolutely on top of my list of things to be grateful for, so isn’t it a coincidence that some of the best dining experiences, whether at home or in a restaurant, are served up in Ramadan? The delicious spread at the end of the day is really the most humbling part for someone who fasts - and a lovely feast for those who are joining in the festivities for a taste of what it’s all about. Turn to p25 for Ramadan 101, our extensive round up of Dubai’s top tents, iftars, and sohours to check out from mid-May onwards. Tag us (@factmagazine) on instagram when you’re posting from any of the gorgeous offerings - we’d love to see where our recommendations have taken you! If our cover is the reason you picked up this issue of FACT, look no further than the colourful talent of Zahra Gulraiz, a Dubai-based artist whose love of calligraphy is paving the way for project after project. I caught up with the lovely lady herself to talk art influences, new opportunities and why calligraphy is more than just strokes and symbols to her (p34). Though I’ll do my best to behave with bad eating habits before (and during) Ramadan, I can’t promise that I won’t be on the hunt for the best Kunafa in town. If you think you’ve found it, just holler. Wishing all of our readers who are celebrating, Ramadan Kareem. See you next month to talk Eid escapes, World Cup and more...☺

SHARING FRIDGES CHALLENGE With its mantra of ‘think globally, act locally’ Steigenberger Hotel Business Bay is planning initiatives that will benefit the neighbouring community in Business Bay over Ramadan. After last year’s heartening outcome, the hotel is gearing up to host the Sharing Fridge concept once again. THE RAMADAN SHARING Fridge initiative has paved the way for further meaningful engagement in community service. The Steigenberger Hotel Business Bay will be setting up and replenishing refrigerators just outside the property, stocked with drinking water, juices, laban, soda, milk as well as fresh fruits and a variety of other snacks, offering an opportunity for those in need to pick up a refreshing drink or healthy snack ready for when they break their fast at the end of a long and hot day. Steigenberger is taking it a step further by encouraging neighbouring hotels and residents to be a part of this initiative, by replicating the concept at their hotel. Inviting other hoteliers to the Sharing Fridges Challenge, General Manager Stephen Meredith envisions a stronger sense of community not just with residents but also hotel guests, embracing completely, the spirit of Ramadan. He sais: “The idea is to come together as a community, to join hands and make tasty safe food and drinks available to anybody who needs it. The outcome of last year’s Ramadan Sharing Fridge was nothing short of heart warming, and this year we want to widen our circle and rope our neighbours in too,” Stephen continued. “We have shared a video on Facebook inviting our colleagues from hotels in our vicinity to join in, and believe that together we can make a big difference.” The Sharing Fridges Challenge is open to anyone who is looking for a way to help the community. What better way to take part in the charitable spirit of Ramadan? ✤ 18

QUEENING AROUND The legendary Queen Elizabeth 2 is starting a new chapter in her storied history as a floating hotel, dining and entertainment destination in Dubai. THE QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 (QE2) has opened its doors to the public ready to take bookings for its rooms and dining outlets. PCFC Hotels - part of the Dubai government’s Ports, Customs and Free Zones Corporation - has reinvented the legendary vessel as the latest must-see tourism destination, in a city renowned for its world-class attractions. The world-famous cruise liner, which has a history spanning five decades, is now docked permanently at Mina Rashid, where her dining, accommodation and entertainment attractions will be unveiled. Her opening marks the first phase – a “soft opening”of several stages in which segments of the liner will be opened and released for a unique experience capturing all that was grand about her forty years of service. In this first phase, she will be welcoming passengers on board to experience a selection of beautifully restored rooms and suites, to discover five of the planned 13 restaurants and bars and explore her rich history in the adjacent QE2 Heritage Exhibition. Hamza Mustafa, CEO of PCFC Hotels, said: “To finally open the QE2 is a dream come true for my team and I. It is one of Dubai’s most highly anticipated projects and we know that a lot of people are going to be very excited to see her for the first time, or to step back on board the vessel that created so many wonderful memories during her 40 years at sea. “We are especially thankful to our Chairman, Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem whose vision and determination to give her a second life has come to fruition. His passion for the Queen Elizabeth 2 and all that she represents means that she can continue to deliver the grandeur that she stood for, within a new special location at the heart Mina Rashid, in Dubai,” he continued. The 13-deck hotel has been thoughtfully restored to her former glory – maintaining her most loved interior design features including her period furniture, renowned paintings and famous memorabilia. The original porthole windows still add a maritime feel to the attractive modernized guest rooms and a number of her original restaurants have retained the same names and décor as her former years. Whilst extensively preserving her authentic elements, she has been fully equipped with all the latest technology. Hamza Mustafa added: “We have dedicated more than 2.7 million man-hours into transforming this legendary ocean liner into the multi-faceted tourist destination that she is today and I am very proud to reintroduce her to the world as she embarks on the next stage of her celebrated journey. It has been an honor to work on this wonderful project and to help ensure that our lovely Lady lives up to her new slogan: still making history.” The grand launch of the QE2 will take place in October 2018. ✤ 22

C

alligraphy has been a part of the Islamic art world for many centuries; however, this elegant form of art has also appeared in other cultures, including Roman, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Mayan and more, with many incorporating it in their scriptures and books. Still, calligraphy remains an intricate artistic style that has been used to a much greater extent in the Arab world, in wonderfully diverse and imaginative ways that have taken the written word from pen to paper, to canvas, to the streets, the city walls, and beyond. For these and many other reasons, calligraphy has become somewhat of a symbolic feature of Islamic art. Its premise often lies within Arabic writing, whereby the end result is the balance between transmitting a text and expressing its meaning through a formal visual code. This is also the very reason why calligraphy is both a most beautiful and powerful art form, having been developed and adopted by traditional and modern-day artists to share their views, messages and interests. For us, 29-year-old Zahra Gulraiz is one such artist. We first came across her work in 2016, featuring it in FACT’s regional issues. Now that we’re fully established in Dubai, we thought it only right to revisit Zahra’s work and see what she’s been up to for the past two years. Probably the biggest development for Zahra since we last spoke is her venture into the world of accessories. “I have recently started collaborating with companies to feature my art on various products,” she tells us, “And I have to say, it feels amazing. The handbags were a hit and got sold out pretty fast! The most recent collaboration features my illustrations on a series of children’s books,” Zahra adds. “It basically all started after I was approached by a greeting cards company to design notebook covers for their product line. Since then it has been collaboration overload.” Taking it all the way back, Zahra’s childhood family life as well as her religious background and deep connection with the Arabic language has inspired her artistic pursuits on a major scale. “While my peers in kindergarten chased each other, rode their bikes, played with barbie dolls or read their books, you would find me wandering the halls looking at the paintings on the walls,” Zahra reminisces. “As I grew older, my father inspired me a great deal. We would spend our free time painting my furniture pink or making 3D art installations. I think my Dad was one of the biggest reasons why I have always been inclined towards art,” she adds. Zahra’s other significant guidance came from Arabic writing, which is also the main influence for calligraphy too. Many Muslim communities and cultures hold the Arabic language in great esteem for it was the language in which the Holy Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in the 7th century. “As we lived in a practicing family, the Quran was a vital part of my life,” Zahra says. “After years of learning and getting accustomed to the Arabic text in the Quran, I gained a strong connection with the Arabic language. I fell in love 36

with the structure of each alphabet. As I made my way through college, I found myself drifting away from the norm of creating portraits and landscapes, and more towards the beauty that lay within the Arabic text,” she explains. Calligraphy is and always will be Zahra’s first love, even though she does work on mandalas and illustrations, her heart – and paint brush – always seems to find their way back to what she loves most. And one of the main reasons she holds onto her own style of work is because of how it makes her feel. “The art we are surrounded by has a huge impact on our mood and emotions,” Zahra says. “For me, the carefully constructed lines along with the relaxed swirls in my work make me feel calm, happy, and at ease. The main focus of my work is to draw people’s attention towards it, make them question it, and then seek what lays beneath the surface.” It’s evident that since our last conversation with Zahra, she has really come into her own. “I have definitely matured as an artist, and as a person over the last couple of years,” she admits. “My artistic style (and personality) have become more defined and confident. fact magazine

“I am not afraid to take chances, play around with new styles, or become caught up with the “stress to impress”. I have had people tell me that my work will not go far, or that it’s too monotonous. I have taken this negativity and channelled it into positivity by believing in myself first,” she smiles. “Self love is alive and well, guys! Also, I am thoroughly enjoying using Instagram as a tool to help me grow, and the love and support you get from other artists is so uplifting.” So, what is it about art that keeps her excited and motivated to keep creating? “I like to set very high goals for myself,” Zahra says. “I am talking sky high! The vision of achieving my goals is so exciting that it kicks me into gear and helps to keep me motivated. Working towards that end goal makes every step of the process enjoyable. “Even though I have been a professional artist for a long time, the constant thirst to better myself has not subsided. I am constantly learning, growing and progressing as an artist,” she adds. Recently, Zahra has given her paint brushes a little rest and dived into the world of Digital Art. She now carries her iPad Pro around like it’s a newborn! Her signature style remains the same, but she’s now concentrating on creating Digital Artwork that can be used on more products. “Got to keep up with the times,” she says! As we get into the heart of 2018, Zahra has a number of cool projects in the pipeline. “I am currently collaborating with a hotel in Downtown Dubai which will permanently showcase my paintings,” she shares. “After a few more collaborations, I plan to start my own business.” When your enthusiasm, artworks and future vision speaks volumes in the way that Zahra’s does, there really is no limit to what can be achieved. ✤

ZAHRA’S ADVISE FOR BUDDING ARTISTS: • Start working on your own personal style and try to be as individual as you possibly can. It’s perfectly fine to get inspired by other artists, but never copy another artist’s work. Take your time, find your niche, and when you find it, practice till the cows come home! • Make yourself an Instagram account and start posting your work there. Interact with people. Listen to their constructive criticism. Step out of your comfort zone and basically, just go for it! • If you want to be truly successful as an artist, don’t be intimidated by the pressure to be successful. Success takes time. So take your time, take it easy, and don’t be so hard on yourself. You’re doing great. This stranger lady right here in the magazine believes in you!

Dirty Computer

By Janelle Monae

A scintillating amalgamation of synthladen soul, rubbery funk and sugary R&B, Janelle Monae is a true musical treasure. Adding a distinct festive Southern bounce to the music scene, Monae has successfully secured her position as a true icon in music, fashion and film. Her fourth album and first “emotion picture”, Dirty Computer is an artistic progression we have been so excited to witness. Deep, personal and straight from the heart, the album sheds light on Monae’s story like never before. Evoking the style and flair of Kiss, Make Me Feel might be the strongest Prince tribute we’ve heard since his death. Packing a ton of 1980s nostalgia, the liberated jam carries a feeling of raw sensual energy all throughout the song. With personal liberation as the key theme of the album, it is all about the celebration of one’s self as well as strength and unity. A diss record aimed at haters, Django Jane is a bold step away from her previous work. The perfect balance of grace and reverence, Dirty Computer is definitely one of our favourite records of the year!

Electric Light By James Bay

James Bay’s stellar rise to pop stardom has been the subject of fascination for fans and critics alike. Attempting a major creative reinvention, Bay embraces electronic beats and woozy atmospherics while citing Prince and Frank Ocean as his inspirations. A world away from his signature guitar driven sound, Wild Love sees the Hitchin-born singer-songwriter experiment with warped synths and subtle guitar lines. Combining carnality and gospel music, the futuristic track takes his sound to a new place. Armed with a brand new image and sound, this audacious change of direction marks a significant turning point in the singer’s musical journey. Pink Lemonade continues his bold transformation with pulsating rock breakup ballad you need to soothe your lovelorn heart! Playing with different styles of production of delivery, James Bay offers a new and improved sound while still sticking close to his roots. We can hardly wait for what’s next!

Chronicling the rise of the female show runner, this book is about how the role of women has radically transformed the television industry. From Shonda Rhimes and Lena Dunham to Tina Fey and Mindy Kaling, the Press examines how these extraordinary women have revolutionised the entertainment landscape.

Art Dubai Modern presented museum-quality work by masters from the Middle East, South Asia and Africa, whose work has been influential throughout the 20th century and featured 16 galleries from 14 countries with solo, two-artist and group exhibits. This year’s edition saw the launch of Residents, a new programme-cum-gallery section, which saw 11 artists from all over the world come to the UAE for a 4-8 week residency at both in5 and Tashkeel in Dubai, and Warehouse421 in Abu Dhabi. Works produced during this time were presented in the final exhibition at the fair.

EVOLUTION OF THE SUV:

2018 BMW X2

fact magazine

59

• CITY RIDES

Hate it or love it, the SUV holds top spot here in the UAE, and car manufacturers are well aware of the easily-bored crowd who constantly crave the next best thing. Raising the stakes is BMW’s newest entry, the sleek X2…

Y

ou know those charts that depict human evolution, beginning in the days of the Australopithecus who grow and morph into the Homo habilis, the Neanderthals and hey presto, the Homo sapiens of modern day movement – who agreed that walking is so last millennium and decided to build four-wheel machines that would carry them to places? The development of SUVs could inspire its very own chart, starting with sturdy army-issued Dodges, to the primeval post-war Utility Wagon with Jeep mechanics and the metal-top Land Rovers that soon transformed into family-friendly Explorers, hustling Hummers and time-travelling crossovers from manufacturers like Lexus, Porsche and Jaguar to name but a few. In other words, if an SUV wants to draw attention in 2018, it had better bring its A-game… and then some. As the BMW X2 came around the corner for us to test drive, its extrovert exterior had us intrigued. Oozing understated confidence; this 2018 model cuts a sublime figure from any angle – like a finely-tuned athlete taking position at the starting line. There’s an essence of rugged refinement that gives the X2 extra pep with a touch of BMW’s signature sporting grace of a coupe. With a sporty suspension set-up, the BMW X2 pushes back boundaries, puts a firework under old habits and brings previously uncharted levels of driving pleasure to this vehicle segment. 60

fact magazine

If there’s one thing that we are absolutely sure of at first glance, it’s that the BMW X2 was made for the young, urban crowd. Social butterflies who make their car a second home and live for all things digital – this is the car that’s going to keep them connected in all aspects of life, especially with the cool kids of instagram. That’s not to say that the BMW X2 wouldn’t appeal to any motoring fan who is young at heart! Let’s begin with details, the BMW X2 has wheel arches with a squared-off look, striking exhaust tailpipes and accentuated side skirts, not to mention an elegant roofline, slick lines and slim window graphic. If you’re looking for a car with its very own unique character that still stays true to its maker’s roots, the BMW X2 won’t betray this. Two design features, in particular, catch the eye. The X2 turns BMW’s familiar trapezoidal kidney grille form on its head, and it now broadens as it heads south; this is the first time a modern BMW has gone about things this way and it certainly works to emphasise the car’s width and sporty stance. And the additional BMW roundel on the C-pillars references a much-loved detail of classical BMW coupes, such as the 2000 CS and 3.0 CSL, further highlighting the sporting DNA of the BMW X2. It’s all well and good to please the eyes, but what about the thrill-seekers looking for extra oomph? BMW TwinTurbo engines transfer the X2’s attractive genes to the road in suitably dynamic style. Three variants are available from launch; the BMW X2 sDrive20i petrol model, the X2 xDrive20d diesel variant, and the X2 xDrive25d diesel. Both diesel cars come as standard with xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive and the eight-speed Steptronic transmission, while the petrol model is fitted with the sporty seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission. All combinations turn every journey – on any terrain – into an adventure.

CITY RIDES •

Some of the best drives in this car, and journeys that really played into the strengths of the BMW X2 included the leisurely treks between Dubai and Abu Dhabi – or any open road for that matter. The handling of the car is smooth and enjoyable, and with the right playlist on repeat – you’ll be in automobile heaven. The sporty suspension of the BMW X2 transfers the fine agility and dynamics of the BMW drivetrain to the road. The M Sport und M Sport X models come as standard with M Sport suspension with firmer spring and damper settings and a lowered ride height. This feature is available as an option on the basic BMW X2 – bonus! Moving inside, the interior of the M Sport and M Sport X models is trimmed in an enticing Micro Hexagon fabric/Alcantara Anthracite combination with contrast stitching for the instrument panel and centre console. And the instrument cluster and large displays bring added flourishes to the interior, acting as visual pointers to BMW’s digital expertise. However, if you’re anything like us and eager to get going in the driver’s seat – a.k.a you know exactly where to plug in your USB for Spotify listening pleasure – then you don’t need a reminder to take advantage of the features such as BMW Connected and BMW ConnectedDrive Services – both available as an option for the BMW X2. Of course, on-road safety is a concern as with all vehicles and the BMW X2 doesn’t do things by half. It offers customers cutting-edge technologies when it comes to driver assistance systems. For example, the Traffic Jam Assistant eases the driver’s workload in tedious stop/ start traffic on congested motorways. This system is part of the optional Driving Assistant Plus, which comprises a series of camera-based driver assistance systems. The optional Parking Assistant is likewise designed to make life easier for the BMW X2 driver, automatically identifying suitable parking spaces and, if desired, taking over steering duties for the parking manoeuvre. For old-school SUV lovers, the BMW X2 is a prime example of what happens when a brand strives to move with the times whilst staying dedicated to its origins. For new SUV enthusiasts, the BMW X2 is the bold, uncompromising choice that mum and dad will praise for its safety features (and iconic name), that friends will be happy to jump in and on that will sway classic SUV fans to either hate it or love it. Whichever it is, the BMW X2 breaks conventions to lead the way for the new SUV generation – this is going to be their year! ✤

The Palace of Colours As far as regal dining venues go, Rang Mahal at JW Marriott Marquis Dubai is a bonafide contender for places that make you feel like royalty. FACT was the first to try out the restaurant’s noble new set menu, Warrior’s Feast – a six-course foodie affair that touched every single one of our senses…

W

e’d heard only great things about Rang Mahal by Michelin-starred Chef Atul Kochar, so as we walked into the dim-lit corridor of the restaurant, it quickly reminded us of a trip to the historical forts of Jaipur in India. The venue is reminiscent of the grand halls that you would find in lavish surroundings of ancient palaces; dark, moody interiors open up into a large and intimate lounge area with booths and private seating. Further along, you’re greeted by high ceilings and a gorgeous dining room dotted with huge murals and gigantic round pillars – deep reds, maroons, and warm orange tones add a sense of imperial India to the ambience. Fusing traditional Indian cuisine with contemporary flair, Rang Mahal offers up a different set menu every few weeks to showcase the best of their dishes, cooking techniques, innovative presentation and flavour combinations. If it’s your first time dining here, the new Warrior’s Feast menu is six courses that illustrate the culinary prowess of the warriors of ancient India – the food during that time completely depended on the place of origin and the caste of the warrior, with every region having its own distinct traditions. What came out to the table was a more rustic compilation of dishes that each highlighted the complexity of the spices used. To begin with, the Saffron Lassi is a beautiful choice – light and subtle, it’s a great inclusion of a popular Gulf ingredient too. The Gillawat Ke Kebab is first up; placed neatly on a small pan in front of us, the round kebab is a medley of root vegetables infused with home-ground spices, ginger and coriander. Talk about taking pedestrian ingredients to a whole new level of fine dining – we were impressed with every bite. The Surkh Jhinga followed suit. 76

fact magazine

On an elegant slate, a juicy Gulf shrimp lay, marinated in Rajasthani Sula spice. It was definitely the fiery flavours that had our taste buds blown and we quickly devoured the dish with a side of flatbread. Side note – the waiter will ask beforehand about your level of spice tolerance and dishes will be cooked to match this – a very thoughtful touch. Our dish of the night was full of surprises. The friendly waiter placed a wooden box with a bowl of soup on top – we’re told to eat the soup first and then the real show; the box is opened (in true boomerang perfection) to reveal Tandoor Smoked Fish Tikka with green chutney – the sandalwood smell is an overwhelming welcome and we’ve eaten the goodies before the smoke disappears. We love that one option is a raw, smoked fish, whilst the other is a mouthwatering cooked concoction – a delicious interpretation of what Rang Mahal stands for. Next up is a dish that takes influence from the Indian street food favourite – the dosa. Angya Podi Kohzi is chicken morsels with tamilian spices on a fluffy Indian pancake. A modern twist in this dish comes with a fried egg hidden amongst the ingredients in the middle. At first, we find it intriguing. However, upon taste it’s not the biggest crowd pleaser at the table – and we wish that the chicken and spices had been given centre stage instead. The Sukha Mutton – slow-roasted lamb with pickled spices is the one dish that truly embodied what contemporary Indian cooking is for us. Packed with smoky textures and tantalising flavours, it’s a simple yet on-point combination of ingredients. We end our set menu journey on a high with Malai Ghewar, a stunning,

Instagram-ready dessert that actually tastes as lovely as it looks. Staff at the restaurant are helpful yet unobtrusive, and most allergies and food intolerances are well catered for which is hugely appreciated by surrounding diners (we eavesdrop a few allergy concerns). The Warrior’s Feast is a worthy set menu to experience the true essence of Rang Mahal. ✤

Keep Calm and Eat British Cuisine It had been a while since we ate a really good plate of fish and chips, and REAL pie. The savoury kind stuffed with hot filling and coated in the most perfect crumbly pastry. The problem is, there are few dining venues in Dubai that offer up quality British cuisine. D

escribing itself as serving up “a fabulous choice of dishes with a British twist” – we’re surprised to find that GBR is the hotel’s allday dining restaurant. There’s a brasserie style feeling once when we walk into the venue, and a sense of 1920’s glamorous Gatsby buzz. The restaurant is large and stylish with the dining space constructed around the iconic bar, which stands in the centre of the venue and boasts a dramatic double height ceiling with large windows showcasing stunning sea views. On this particular evening, we’re here to try out the Arabic Night – albeit a little gutted to not have a full host of British delicacies at our fingertips. With that said, there IS a section dedicated to some UK classics – and we’re VERY happy about it. First up, we plate a huge helping of Cottage Pie, Cauliflower and Cheese Gratin, and a side of Honey Glazed Parsnips and Celeriac. Considering that this is a buffet set up, the food is piping hot and fresh. The Cottage Pie is everything we could have asked for – and more. Yes, there’s no pastry involved but this is as traditionally English as it gets; a classic recipe of succulent ground beef in a tasty sauce, topped with melt-inthe-mouth mashed potato. It was every bit the reminder of evening dinners at home in the winters of North West England! As our waiter explains to us, the focus at GBR is on using top quality produce to create a meticulously planned all-daydining menu of much loved classics. Ingredients are sourced from the UK, according to the seasons, inspiring a new line-up of dishes every quarter. We jump for joy at the sight of Barbecue Chicken. After smothering it in gravy and picking up a helping of potatoes, we head back to the table for a course that can only be described as GBR’s casual take on the famous Sunday roast. We’re also happy to find out that the a la carte menu is still available every evening, and lo’ and 82

behold, there’s a crispy cod fish and giant cut chips for anyone who wants to go fullon British. Of course, the main event of the evening is the Arabic buffet, and it’s actually a lovely spread of fresh salads, cold mezze, vine leaves and even a creamy beetroot hummous that we scoop up with fluffy bread. For mains, you’ll find hot mezze, Moroccan tagines, and a massive round pot of meat ouzi. We’d recommend trying the Fish Harrah with coriander which was a pleasant surprise to the taste buds! Before heading to the dessert corner, we sit back and appreciate the open plan design of GBR, where diners are able to watch the Dukes culinary team preparing a repertoire of iconic British classics at the live cooking stations, or observe the bustle of the brasserie from the dedicated bubbly and oyster bar. The ambience is relaxed and it’s easy to get comfortable throughout dinner. We go for a simple fruit salad and some umm ali for dessert – though there’s plenty of choice including Arabic sweets and mini cakes, meringues and tarts to keep all the sweet-toothed diners happy. GBR’s service was top notch as was the food and laid-back atmosphere, for an all-day dining experience that brings British cuisine to the forefront, you’d better believe that the fish and chips on the a la carte menu will have us returning through the doors VERY SOON. ✤

CULINARY SPOTLIGHT •

Crab-tivating It would appear that Dubai has gone a little seafood crazy with 2018 seemingly the year of all things marine life. Hot on the heels of other tasty openings, Crab Market is the latest ocean-themed venue to make its mark on the city’s dining scene. FACT’s David Tapley explores… fact magazine

• CULINARY SPOTLIGHT

S

ituated in the heart of DIFC inside the Emirates Financial Towers complex, access to the Crab Market transpires to be a bit of a faff. Located on the 15th floor, diners must navigate a number of escalators before being swiped through the security entrance (reservations recommended) and up into the lifts. Visiting a restaurant shouldn’t be this complicated but the inevitable sweat we’ve worked up in trying to find our dining destination is soon rewarded with a cool passion fruit mocktail and beds of glistening ice in which crab legs and all kinds of crustaceans are buried. The marketing materials describe Crab Market as a casual dining destination but this seems to be quite the understatement. Pressed white table lines, smartly dressed staff and a flare for the unusual are more indicative of finedining but all these elements pale in comparison to the Burj Khalifa views which are easily some of the best in Dubai. Crab Market’s menu is the brainchild of Vladimir Mukhin who foodies and avid Netflix viewers may recognise from the third season of Chef’s Table. Mukhin’s restaurant in Moscow, the White Rabbit, currently stands at No 23 in the world’s 50 best restaurants ranking and he has been recognised as a pivotal influence in the resurgence of Russian cookery, taking the traditional flavours of his homeland while modernising the plating and execution of his dishes. Just one look at Crab Market’s menu and it’s easy to see Mukhin’s influence, with Kamchatka Crab being the restaurants speciality (it’s all in the name really). Imported from Russia and kept in cold water reflective of the Arctic temperatures in which they’re commonly found, Crab Market looks to ensure their seafood is as fresh as physically possible. The appetisers are primarily focused on all things raw with a selection of tartare, carpaccio, salads and oysters (we’re pleased to note the inclusion of the local Dibba Bay variety) offered. We begin with a tartare platter (AED185) showcasing four varieties of raw seafood complemented by some unexpected accompaniments — scallop and papaya, tuna and avocado, salmon and mango and langoustine and pomelo. Of the quartet, the langoustine tartare marked a first for us but it was the salmon and mango which would be our preference, with the tropical fruit bringing a delightful sweetness to the cubed fish. Crab Market’s dishes have a distinct visual and textured appeal that took us entirely by surprise. A vegetarian version of carpaccio transpired to be quite the revelation with thinly sliced purple cauliflower layered amidst parmesan foam and pungent truffle in a dish as aromatic as it is textural. The Kamchatka Crab is honestly what we came for and the crustacean didn’t disappoint. Four large crab legs cooked in one of five signature sauces that range from white pepper to champagne. We select the chilli garlic and are treated to generous portions of delicate crab meat, already unleashed from the shell (meaning no hassle and no mess) and offering a subtle heat to the palate from a sauce which blends together olive oil, garlic, chilli flakes & Japanese soy sauce. 86

fact magazine

From crab to carbs we can’t resist a small portion of the Squid Ink Linguine with langoustine (AED130) which marks another high point. Served with langoustine pieces the robust dish makes for one of the better pasta dishes we’ve had in the region with the nuances of seafood obvious without overpowering. Russian influences can be found in more than just the seafood with the popular Honey Cake with sweet cherry and sour cream ice cream (AED35) making waves on the Dubai menu. The dish, such an integral part of Mukhin’s Chef’s Table episode appears deconstructed, modernised and served alongside a taster portion of his grandmother’s traditional version. The Mango Panna Cotta with lychee granite (AED35) doesn’t quite reach the levels of greatness, but continues to play with texture albeit in a slightly gelatinous form. With a beautiful fit-out, separate bar area (ideal for a pre or post dinner tipple) and a seafood market setup, Crab Market is looking to bring something slightly different to the Dubai dining scene. Revolving around the idea of the freshest catch, it’s the precision in making the dining experience sensual through the reliance on visuals and textures that works to make the Crab Market memorable and an impressive new addition to DIFC. ✤

P

ossibly our favourite development in Dubai this year, La Mer has quickly become the talk of the town in the city – and beyond. There’s cool street art, lazy hammocks, food trucks and fairy lights, a promenade with benches and bucket showers, and, of course, a whole host of food and retail outlets to be discovered by the public. Located at La Mer South, we walk along the sandy shores all the way to the Indian-inspired venue, Masti (translating to ‘fun and mischief’) – a vibrant space that incorporates a restaurant and lounge as well as a gin room… for those looking for extra Masti – see what we did there? #punlife. Being the first licensed restaurant in La Mer – alcohol is served daily after 5pm and at brunch there are premium beverage packages available – we were eager to soak in the Friday afternoon atmosphere. The interiors are a fusion of rainbow hues, with a tropical feel as cosy colourful cushions, beautiful house plants and Indian-esque ornaments like ceramic elephants and vivacious lighting, are all accompanied by floor-to-ceiling windows – think jungle hideaway meets Indian summerhouse. The décor is ON POINT and we sink into a comfy seat ready to beging our culinary escapade. The venues full name is Masti - Cocktails and Cuisine and it prides itself on being passionately different and deliciously naughty, which is very much evident in the bubbly staff and the gorgeous food. From the mind of legendary and awardwinning chef Hari Nayak, the menu offers a reinterpretation of Indian cuisine, designed to share. On Friday, Masti serves up sharing style food at The Reserve, an unforgettable brunch experience. Dynamic and daring, this brunch is a gastronomic celebration made up of playful and eccentric 90

surprises for a totally fierce weekend social. Highlights of the cold appetisers included the Edamame Bhel, a dish offered exclusively to brunch goers that is a delicious, modern spin on an Indian street food classic, alongside the innovative Cassava Chaat with a lip-licking sweet and sour chutney, and the super fresh South Indian tempered Crab Salad - light and packing a punch thanks to the pomelo and mayo vinaigrette. The hot appetisers followed suit in being tasty and beautifully presented. Standouts were the Pulled Tandoori Chicken Bao - a grilled bao bun combined with melt-in-themouth chicken and an irresistible tamarind glaze. SO. MUCH. FLAVOUR. And, the Burrata and Truffle Pizza which was created using a Makhani sauce for the Indian touch. Unfortunately, the dish we were hoping would steal the show - Five Spice Beef Brisket - was our least favourite. The meat itself was dry with more fat than we could chew. It’s saving grace, however, was the cumin mole sauce. We actually used it on top of our second hot main, the mouthwatering Chicken Biryani which was innovatively topped with crispy kale, a contemporary twist to the traditional Indian dish which worked in its favour. So yummy! For a truly decadent finale, you can feast on sweet treats to your heart’s content from the enchanting dessert station. Masti’s alternatively tempting cocktails or bespoke concoctions from the distinctive gin trolley are also a hit at the table. This is the place to evoke the spirit of the jungle and embrace the Masti way of life. It’s the age of ‘Cool India’, Masti is unafraid to be different, to take risks, to be fun and carefree in delivering a buzzing social dining scene. We'll be back! ✤

hen it comes to beauty salons in the UAE, ladies and gents everywhere are spoilt for choice. Thankfully, for all the women in the Emirates who need a little TLC, pick me up or pamper session, Tips & Toes offer a range of services to cater to your every beauty need. This awardwinning haven of serenity is a homegrown brand that offers every lady that comes through their doors, a complete feast for the mind, body and soul. With the belief that beauty is a way of being, not just a way of looking, Tips & Toes is your local go-to stop for all things hair, nails, and body! Whether it’s a blow dry, a mani/pedi or a full-on body scrub and massage, this place has it all. On our visit to the Khaleej Al Arabi branch in Abu Dhabi, we’re greeted by a courtyard entrance that immediately helps to fade away the busy city life and send us into a state of relaxation. The friendly receptionist confirms our treatment booking: a shellac manicure and pedicure followed by a wash, blow dry and hair styling. The therapists, Claire and Annie make sure that we’re comfortably seated in a cushy armchair, and begin with the service. To top that off, Berti is tasked with carrying out the 20-minute neck and shoulder massage that we opted for; an excellent addition to the already calming scenario. The nails are cleaned, buffed, filed and polished with precision as the massage sends us into a state of tranquility. What we loved most about the treatments is that each therapist was incredibly skilled and precise in their talents. A heavy knot in the top right shoulder was vigorously eased, and we swore in that very moment that we’d be back for a full body massage with Berti. Furthermore, our shellac nails lasted perfectly for almost three weeks – helping to up the ante at work events, parties and general day-to-day meetings. When it comes to hair, Tips & Toes’ Pradnya is attentive and actually listens to exactly what we want; a wash, blow dry and styling with loose curls for an evening al fresco get-together. She’s professional and talkative without being intrusive, and all the while explaining the different stages of what was being done to the hair. She’s also happy to recommend products for your hair type, and isn’t pushy about expecting you to make a purchase – we appreciated this polite approach and friendly manner. In the end, with freshly painted nails, a bouncy hairdo and a renewed sense of energy, we walked out of Tips & Toes feeling rejuvenated. This is the brand that gives you more bang for your buck with amazing monthly special offers and a team of pros who can literally do it all, but more importantly, do it all well. ✤
