“
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER GREG HUGHES
aking a summer playlist is one of life’s simple highlights for me. Picking out the songs that are essentially going to be the anthems that you make new memories to whilst having fun in the sun, this is the most exciting part of getting ready for summer travel, visits home, lazy pool days with friends and leisurely gatherings. But, in Doha, summer can also mean other things - like trying to survive the scorching heat, running from one A/C spot to another and, most of all, choosing to do things that will stop you from melting in the sun. Fear not. As usual, the FACT team is on-hand to bring you the only Summer Survival guide you need for 2018. We’ve packed it with the city’s top brunches, lunches, dinners, spa offers and more so you know exactly where to go to beat the heat with your loved ones. Turn to p23 and start jotting down all your favourite spots to check out over the next few months. If you’re thinking of jetting away for a quick summer escape, our stay at the stunning Shangri-La Al Husn Resort & Spa in Muscat is just what the doc ordered. Get your fix of mountains, lush greenery and beautiful blue sea as you lay on a sandy beach sipping on something cool. Turn to our Globetrotter on p49 for more. If it’s something a little closer to home that you’re after, the 5-star Doha Marriott Hotel is our Staycation Goals this month. Check into old-world charm with modern touches for a summer staycay that the whole family will enjoy (p43). If you pick up FACT’s monthly issue for a fashion, beauty and interiors fix, you’ll be happy to see that the summer survival edition has more for your wardrobe and makeup/grooming kits. To top this off, our tech pages have something for everyone to envy as well as highlights of all the newest events, activities, openings, places and offers to note for the month of July. I think this summer I’m going old-school. It’s time for a throwback summer playlist - and there’s too many good tunes waiting to be turned up! Wishing you all a bright and beautiful season ahead (and happy survival). Until next month, keep calm and get your summer on. ☺

“… DON’T WORRY ABOUT A THING …” Qatar Museums (QM) unveiled two public art installations by British artist Martin Creed and emerging Qatari ARToonist Ghada Al Khater to mark the one-year anniversary of the blockade against Qatar, commemorating a historic time of unprecedented national solidarity, power, hope and togetherness. THE FIRST PIECE IS MARTIN CREED’S mutable “Everything is Going to be Alright” installation, which was newly created for the context of the anniversary of Qatar’s blockade and showcased on the façade of Al Riwaq gallery. The bright LEDpiece provides a moment of double-take in urban landscapes and acts as a reassuring message for everyone that passes by. Originally executed in 1999 for a temporary commission in Hackney, the artwork is one of the great postconceptualist pieces of the late 20th century. The second piece introduces Qatar to another creative commentary by political ARToonist Ghada Al Khater who generated tremendous praise for her humorous take on the blockade. “A Blessing in Disguise” is Ghada’s Arabic answer to Creed’s “Everything is Going to be Alright.” The familiar proverb formed a significant part of HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani’s historical speech on July 21, 2017, in which he addressed the citizens of Qatar for the first time since the start of the blockade. Displayed on the Fire Station’s façade, the sign serves as a simple and gentle reminder that there is always a silver lining. “Since the beginning of the blockade, Qatar has chosen to take the high road, rising above hate and hostility,” said Khalifa Al Obaidly, Director of the Fire Station. “The two installations were chosen for their genuine and simple messages of hope and optimism, reflecting how the country and its people have used the unjust blockade as an inspiration to move forward against all odds.” Spearheaded by QM’s Chairperson HE Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, public art is a central focus in QM’s mission to push the boundaries of the traditional museum model and offer cultural experiences in public spaces. The two temporary installations join a growing and 10

outstanding collection of paintings and artworks by local and international artists. Hand-picked for their immersive and thought-provoking nature, QM’s public art installations serve as an inspiration for the next generation of cultural producers. This is not the first art initiative that QM has launched as a commentary on the blockade. Last year’s ‘100 days of blockade’ graffiti at the Fire Station, saw five local and expat artists producing emotive artworks reflecting their personal take on the political situation. “Creativity and humor shine the brightest during times of crisis. We will continue to nurture Qatar’s growing artist community by providing platforms of self-expression and establishing an organic connection between audiences and art of all kinds,” Khalifa added. ✤

DON’T SWEAT IT HERE ARE A FEW SIMPLE THINGS YOU CAN BE DOING TO KEEP COOL IN THE SCORCHING SUN...
WHAT TO EAT IN THE HEAT?
POPSICLE PARTY Though you might be tempted, stop yourself from reaching for that super-cold tub of ice cream in the freezer. A healthy and more delicious alternative is fruit popsicles – they’re just as cooling and contain half the calories.
TWO EASY & YUMMY POPSICLE RECIPES
Virgin Piña Colada Pops (Serves 8) Ingredients: 1/2 large pineapple, chopped (about 4 cups), One 15-ounce can cream of coconut Three tablespoons fresh lime juice, Pinch fine salt Method: Puree the pineapple, cream of coconut, lime juice, and salt in a blender until smooth. - Pour the mixture into 10 3-ounce or eight 4-ounce ice-pop molds, dividing evenly. Insert ice-pop sticks and freeze until firm, at least four hours and up to four days. Banana Nutella Fudgesicles (Serves 10) Ingredients: Six large overripe bananas, peeled 1/2 cup nutella Method: Blend the overripe bananas until completely pureed. - Add nutella, and blend until completely mixed in. - Pour into popsicle molds with sticks and freeze for three to four hours. 34
fact magazine
Fruit with Yogurt – As fruit has high water content, it will help maintain your body fluid, by making you sweat – this is the body’s method for cooling down in the heat. Yogurts contain friendly bacteria which can help protect against food poisoning – something that is more of a frequent occurrence in hot temperatures. Rice, Baked Potato & Pasta Salad – Eat regular, small, starch carbohydrate snacks or enjoy a weekend roast with ample potatoes or a pasta dinner, and how about a yummy risotto? Why? Well, carb-rich foods keep the body’s blood sugar and energy levels even, helping to combat heat exhaustion. Onions – Really? Especially red ones! Red onions contain a chemical called quercetin which is believed to have an antihistamine effect. So for those people who suffer from irritants like heat rash or bad reactions to insect bites and stings, eating onions daily could be the answer to these summer complaints. Eat Spicy Food – A vindaloo in the summer might sound crazy, but chillies and spicy curries can stimulate heat receptors in the mouth, enhance circulation and cause sweating, all of which cools the body down. Eat Small, Eat Often – The larger the meal, the more metabolic heat your body creates breaking down the food. Eat small portions but eat regularly!
HOT TIPS FOR COOLING DOWN ◆ Run your wrists under a cold tap for five seconds each every
couple of hours. A main vein passes through this area, and it helps cool the blood. ◆ Wear lightweight, light-coloured cotton clothes. Light colours reflect the sun’s radiation and heat is trapped by synthetic fibres, but cotton absorbs perspiration and its evaporation causes you to feel cooler. ◆ Replace your usual body moisturiser with a cooling aloe vera aftersun product to use morning and night. This will help lower your skin temperature. ◆ While you’re out, keep the house blinds or curtains drawn to stop it heating up like a greenhouse. ✤

T
he Doha Marriott is one of the oldest hotels in Doha opening in 1972. Back then, just the Sheraton and this hotel stood either side of the corniche. Back then it was called the Gulf Hotel but it got a grand upgrade in 2005. Boasting over 300 rooms this is a large hotel and it remains popular despite the wealth of newer hotels popping up all over Doha and beyond. As I lie on the beach and look back at the hotel, palm trees provided a calm oasis and a 20th century feel. When I turned around to take a dip in the cool sea, I looked out at a view of the big modern city of Doha. This really has the feeling of home away from home. The 70’s architecture gives off a slightly retro feel which adds to the feeling of escapism from Doha without ever having left it. There is lots to do and plenty of facilities. The pool is large and rectangular and fun for all the family at the weekends. This is especially a great staycation spot if you have little ones or a large family. I loved the relaxed vibe as families enjoyed time together in a friendly and sociable environment. There are dozens of sun loungers dotted around the pool as well as cute cabanas. Some of them are small for couples and there are bigger ones too for families and larger groups to gather under the shade. The poolside bar is called The View and offers a simple but successful menu of light bites, and burgers and pizzas which is just the kind of thing you want while you chill poolside. The service is fast and the staff are super friendly.

The beach was great. Not especially long but sufficiently sized for a private beach and not over filled. We were easily able to source a sun lounger under a thatched umbrella. The sea was a perfect temperature and great to swim in. The view looked out over the sailing club but takes in the Museum of Islamic Art and the West Bay skyline in the back drop – making your weekend staycay just perfect for all those instagram shots! The gym is a touch simple but covers the basics. Located on the lobby level by the spa, it contains a range of cardio vascular equipment and a selection of weights and muscle training units. There is no shortage of options for places to eat. The best is arguably the iconic JW’s Steakhouse which is FACT award-winning! Located in the lobby, it is designed like a true old-fashioned steak restaurant with wooden oak panels. It’s dimly lit with booths and leather armchairs. The freshest cuts of beef are served to diners with impeccably strong service. It’s award winning for a reason. Yet this is not the hotel’s only pride and joy. Corniche is its all-day dining restaurant serving breakfast in the morning, buffet themed nights throughout the week and the urban brunch on Friday which is known to be a great day out! Walk along the ‘restaurant gallery’ and you’ll see restaurant after another as if you’re in an entertainment arcade but these outlets are not silly or tacky. They are of a five-star quality. There is ‘Salsa’ serving Tex Mex and a newly refreshed menu is being launched imminently. 46

Spacious, elegant and traditional. The bed was second only to the greatest night’s sleep I’ve ever had in my life. I swear the mattress moulded to my body shape! The view looked out over the sea at the new Doha of the now iconic West Bay skyline and the entire Corniche. Though only seven floors high in the old hotel, I’d wager that you’d struggle to find many better views to watch the sunset than from a room at the Doha Marriott Hotel! ✤

he provenance and history of the Shangri-La group is particularly apt when taking in the splendorous setting on your drive from the airport to the Resort. The mythical place described by James Hilton in his novel Lost Horizon inspired Robert Kuok to name his ’new’ hotel after it. The vast rock formations, outcrops and chards which surround the resort are breathtaking and certainly have an element of the mythical, if not magical , about them. A great deal of thought and time has been taken when choosing a setting in which to create this resort. My experience did not begin as I approached the resort but rather days earlier when I received my personalised itinerary. It not only whet my appetite for my stay but made me feel that my individual needs were being addressed and that each element was bespoke and thoughtfully arranged. The lobby area is an absolute triumph of both architecture and taste. It perfectly combines vastness and luxury and was reminiscent of the serene open spaces found within Grand Mosques all over the Middle East. Much of the ‘need to know’ information had already been dispensed through my itinerary prior to arrival so I was able to gaze , in awe, as I was shown around the resort discovering a succession of beautiful spaces, courtyards and vistas. Shangri La Al Husn is Oman’s only private , adult resort and has recently been refined in order to ensure that guests can indulge in all aspects of the finest of Omani hospitality. The views from the infinity pool and the private Mahhara Beach would rival those of Santorini at sunset. The sense of seclusion and tranquillity which the setting imparts is second to none. The phrase ‘breakfast at your leisure’ illustrates the overriding philosophy of the Al Husn resort which is to induce a sense of relaxation and revitalisation. The Sultanah restaurant plays host to breakfast each morning. A riot of colour, flavour and choice greeted us. The vast platters and service stations afford guests the opportunity to eat as healthily or indulgently as their mood desires. The décor is inspired by the rock and water outside and is a fusion of colour and light which exudes freshness. Throughout my travels and gastronomic experiences I would struggle to place another resort’s ‘iftar’ above it. To coin a phrase I had certainly breakfasted like a king or rather Sultan though I doubted that dinner would be that of a pauper! During the course of the day the Mahhara Beach Bar and Al Muheet terrace bar entice guests with a selection of salads, sandwiches and freshly caught flame grilled seafood. Tropical drinks alongside an impressive selection of libations are also served throughout the day overlooking the Bay of Jissah. At 16.00 Afternoon Tea is served on the terrace outside the Sultanah Restaurant. The finest of silverware holds delicate pastries and

The enclosed courtyard with elegant water features and archways which frame snippets of the views over the Gulf of Oman was intimate and alluring. Each finely tuned dining experience and assemblage at the resort really showcases both the location and the quality of the facilities without feeling staged.

And so we turned to the teller of tales of 1001 nights, Shahrazad, for dinner. I was immediately taken with the illusion of stars in the night sky above me which was created with thousands of tiny LED lights. The lighting cast shadows upon the highly polished marble floors and traditional lanterns, kettles and shishas create a sense of Moroccan magnificence. In addition to traditional Moroccan tagines, meat and seafood dishes the restaurant also presents diners with the finest Lebanese grills and Omani specialities. Most would consider taste to be the sense most used when sitting down to dinner however, scientists increasingly believe that sight is vastly more important and the setting in which food is enjoyed can itself actually enhance the flavour. Clearly those behind this restaurant concept had heard about this. Shahrazad’s intricate styling and menu choices will delight and satiate diners whilst exhibiting the flawless standards which permeate every area at the Shangri La. So many second days staying in beautiful hotels begin with first day breakfasts - but not here. Each day saw us embarking on a new route to ‘flavourtown’ with incredible dishes along the way. I could find no fault with preparation, quality, variety or service. Stunning. A fitting precursor for our spa experience. Hareer (meaning silk in Arabic) is the first L’Occitane Spa in Oman and was designed to deliver a Mediterranean experience. The natural tones and shades of lavender are evocative of the colours of Provence where oil infusions were first sold in local markets in the late 1970s and the iconic brand L’Occitane was founded. The oils and treatments combine phyto-therapy and aromatherapy in a luxurious and authentic way. At the time we were the first couple to enjoy the Omani Honey Heaven Treatment together. L’Occitane worked with Hareer Spa to create a bespoke product which is built around the properties of Omani honey. The softening scrub smoothed and soothed the skin and prepared us for the deep relaxing massage with oils further infused with Omani honey. The treatment was a journey of wellbeing leading to a sense of contentment and pure relaxation. The resort is also able to offer guests full use of neighbouring ShangriLa resorts where you may choose to dine or partake of water sports, additional spa facilities and a vast beach. The plat de resistance at the neighbouring Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa resort is the opportunity to experience their Turtle Care Project. Hawksbill and Green Turtles have made the beach close to Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa resort their nesting ground. Resident full time Turtle Warden Mohammed Al Hasani ensures the safety of the nesting turtles and runs a full time education programme which guests can access. The first turtle release this year was on Sunday 15th April and we were fortunate enough to witness one of the most awe inspiring sights imaginable - the emergence of said baby turtles. When considering how best to precis the highlights of my visit I hit a brick wall. At no point during my stay did one drink or meal or host surpass the rest. Everything was an unequivocal standard of excellence. Perhaps the best way is to mention the feeling of abject disappointment we felt as we grudgingly packed our cases and resigned ourselves to the fact that we must leave. As we bid farewell to the soaring escarpments and rugged coastline we thought of James Hilton’s mythical ‘Shangri La’ and agreed that he would be tipping his hat in approval. The Shangri-La Al Husn Resort & Spa, Muscat is one of those secrets you simply have to share, as it is too good not to be enjoyed by all. ✤ 52

POP
Liberation
By Christina Aguilera After a six-year wait, Christina Aguilera is blessing us with her stunning vocals like it was 2002 again. Since Aguilera’s OG pop has always had a special place on our playlists and our hearts, we were beyond stoked about her latest release. Spoiler alert: it did not disappoint! Armed with an unparalleled vocal ability and artistic ambition, Aguilera’s newest offering is a true testament to her musical genius. Featuring Ty Dolla Sign and 2 Chainz and co-produced by Kanye West, Accelerate follows a synth pop beat with an R&B edge. Experimenting with different music styles and sounds, this is definitely unlike anything we’ve heard from the singer before. Pushing the singer’s vocal abilities, Liberation sees her catching up to the more edgy and modern sounds of today. Teaming up with the eccentric Demi Lovato, Fall in Line is the feminist anthem the world needs right now. Showcasing a grinding, soulful groove, the empowering track is a surefire banger. It looks like Xtina is back and she’s here to stay.

R
yuichi Sakamoto remains to this day one of the people who sparks a myriad of ideas in everything Kenzo does. Starting off as one third of pioneering electro group, ‘yellow magic orchestra’ and then a solo composer, activist and dancer, over the course of his career, he has epitomised progress and reform, enlightenment and enrichment. Sayoko Yamaguchi, one of the world’s original supermodels, was one of Kenzo Takada’s muses. Her originality lay in her capacity to offer chameleonlike qualities to endless inspirations. Upon looking through the many images in the house’s archives of her and Kenzo, the brand’s creative team was inspired by her transformative character. For both collections, Kenzo aims to capture the duality of the two figures. It looks to the era when they both ruled on two distant continents; to Ryuichi’s personal flair when questioning the norm, and to Sayoko’s ability to mix patterns, prints, silhouettes, and colours. For the women’s collection, Kenzo worked with clashing stripes and florals. Paisley skirts meet racing tees. Ruffled dresses in crepe appear with floral jacquard coats. Men’s tailored elements contrast with boldly-feminine metallic silks or memory satin in dusty pinks. Reversible raincoats offer the option of a classic trench or high gloss. Trouser shapes are the meeting of ski pants and bikers. Baby blue, vivid yellow and fuchsia transparent organzas are worn over graphic skirts and tops. Women’s accessories pack a floral punch with especially conceived flower appliqués on belts, chokers and materially mélanged sandals. The new ‘gyoza’ tote with a ball clasp fastening makes its debut in vivid neon, stripes or patent leather. The men’s collection’s style is reminiscent of Ryuichi’s individualism. A collage of British tailoring and Japanese baseball, shapes are strong shouldered and high-waisted. 50’s baseball trousers are matched with graphic album cover tees. Prints exclusively supplied by Ryuichi Sakamoto himself are worn alongside paisley and striped trousers and tops. Men’s trench belts are worn affixed to trousers or extra-long. The micro gym bags come in a leather nylon mix. Flat soled boots or sandals complement the cropped finish trousers. ✤

HALF OF MY HEART IS IN QAVANNA
When was the last time you went out to a Croatian restaurant? Chances are, not at all here in Doha. hey describe themselves as offering “wholesome food, traditional cakes and amazingly relaxed ambient of Croatian green veranda.” Morning, noon or night, Qavanna is open for breakfast, lunch, dinner or just chilling out. Located in The Gate Mall, Qavanna is a somewhat holistic experience and not a quickdash place. It’s a venue for relaxation and spending quality time. I sampled several dishes to get a flavour for what the place is all about. Lots of stuff is freshly made in-house like their bread which is very natural and not doused in chemicals. It goes perfectly with olive oil, vinegar and olives. Their appetisers are varied. Try the baked prawns and baked cheese which are served warm with toasted sesame seeds stuck to the prawns for a fulsome taste and accompanied by basil and cherry tomatoes – it’s starter heaven. We also tried a dish that is coming soon to their ever-evolving menu which has already had three manifestations since launching last November. The team at Qavanna is determined to tweak it to perfection. It’s none other than the filo pastry stuffed with prawns and a creamy side sauce – beautiful. Though Croatian at its heart, Qavanna has a broad and widely encompassing menu boasting sandwiches and burgers too. They are especially proud of the cheese burger with two hundred grams of lean beef, cheddar, tomato, pickles, onion with barbecue and mayonnaise sauces. A great lunch option and a quicker-to-prepare item than many others on the menu which they proudly told us takes time as everything is made fresh with precise ingredients. And so it tasted that way too – DELICIOUS. Consider the vegetarian lasagna which is one of their signature dishes, as it represents everything this restaurant set out to be. Fresh sheets are topped with zucchini, basil pesto and gratin tomatoes and you can choose either a strip of chicken or roasted shrimps tails to top it. Just perfect! The black risotto is the stand out highlight, although a little messy. Your lips will be black and your teeth may look a touch gothic afterwards so best to check yourself out and gargle some water before going to an important business meeting or catching up with a loved one! The risotto is actually fairly simple. It is 72

a cuttlefish ragout with cream cheese and lemon. It was everything we dreamed of from a tasty risotto, and more. Though I didn’t try it, their golden risotto sounds incredible. It’s a risotto with saffron, burrata cheese and black truffle cream, and I’m sure it would have been a hit at the table. Our host, Mladen, enticed me to try a popular dessert they serve that hails from his hometown of Split. I’m not known to be a great sweet fan, but this was rather special!Lined with fig pieces - I had forgotten just how much I love figs and definitely need to introduce more into my diet. Qavanna boasts great coffee and even oxygen which you can inhale. The decor is homely and imaginatively designed with cosy circular cabanas, comfy sofas and pretty tables and chairs. This place has the full package alongside a concept that we’ve never seen before in the whole country – a big thumbs up from me, and the FACT team! . ✤

A
t Teatro, we started the circumnavigation of the globe in Malaysia with sweet and sticky veal ribs which proved a very satisfying starter. Coated in a lip-licking sweet black pepper glaze and cooked at just the right length, this was the perfect dish to ensure that our night got off to a flying start. The other smash for us was eating the roast duck spring rolls served with plum and hoisin sauce elegantly presented and great to share. As a sucker for sushi, I sampled a platter of maki rolls and sashimi and delighted in both traditional and more modern additions on the plate. Sushi is a competitive thing in Qatar with no shortage of restaurants serving it and the quality varying from rather poor with modern twists to high quality with rich authenticity. I wouldn’t put this sushi at the very top end of the spectrum but it is fighting for contention and worthy of its place on the menu. One corner of the restaurant actually hosts a sushi bar so you can sit at the bar and watch it being made. For a midweek treat, there is a promotion on Tuesdays where you can indulge in unlimited sushi for just QR199 – well worth it! Music fills the theatre of food and as I was there on a Tuesday, a saxophonist was creating a suave ambience with the air gliding in jazz tunes as part of the sushi and sax night. From Japan, we went to Thailand and the traditional Thai green curry was rather spicy and I liked that a lot. A true Thai curry should have a kick to it and this did. Teatro’s range of Indian dishes were a list of globally known curries cooked well. The tandoori jinga is my personal recommendation. The jumbo prawns were marinated in several spices and yoghurt. It was simply delicious. The signature dish is well worth it. As a duck lover, I readily chose it as you are served a plate of roasted duck breast and a couple of legs with pancakes and some hoisin and plum sauce to put in them. I couldn’t get enough – it got better with each bite! A lemongrass crème brulee rounded off the night proving that this kitchen can turn their hands effectively to every part of a meal and make a dish their own, completely. It was a superb version of your standard crème brulee, adding a slight savoury twist to the usually sweet dish. I had to bypass Italy’s range of pizzas and pastas as well as the Western favourites like the surf and

turf – though we’ve heard only great things about the selections! Teatro describes itself as the place ‘where eastern cooking meets western cuisine’ and they’re not kidding. The menu is vast and though I tried to eat plenty from as many locations as I could, I realised I couldn’t sample it all. What I do now know is that the quality across the board is good which reassures me ahead of my next visit (very soon!). ✤

DOHA INSIDER
Rick Enders General Manager, Marriott Marquis City Centre Doha Hotel
As a GM, describe your style of work - are you an office man or someone who likes to walk around the hotel and see things unfold first hand? The majority of the time I like to walk around the hotel, meet with associates at their work place and engage with our guests, it’s a continuous balance between the office and walking around; I am a strong believer that you cannot run a hotel from behind your desk. I try to have as fewer meetings as possible and when we have to meet, it’s no longer than 60 minutes.

Tell us about some of your previous experience that has prepared you to take on this role at Marriott Marquis City Centre Doha Hotel? The majority of my career I have spent in operations, started off in the kitchen, followed by restaurants and bars, I did my fair share in catering prior to becoming Director of Operations. During my last 30 years I have been exposed to many cultures and countries, had my first Middle East experience in 1997 and truly enjoyed it, I also worked in the Far East and the Americas. My first assignment as general manager in 2006 was as opening GM, it’s a great learning experience to start something off from scratch especially when it works out the way you envisioned it.
Share with us your vision for the hotel over the next year... The vision for the hotel is already in place since a couple of years; it’s not about reinventing the wheel but continuing with the success story from my predecessor. Our objective will be to further strengthen our position within the market by being the preferred hotel for corporate and leisure guests.
