Elevate your summer moments

Whether you're lounging in the pool or basking in the sun, indulge in the ultimate combination of luxury and tropical delight. Adorned with a selection of fresh fruits and coconuts, this arrangement is perfect for creating unforgettable summer memories.

From Ordinary To Extraordinary

“It's not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.” Epictetus “

Alittle while ago I came across a person who is doing some crazy-great things, just an ordinary guy who’s grabbed life by the horns and is making a huge difference to animals in war-torn Ukraine. He collects money and veterinary supplies, puts them in his beat-up van and drives them there from his home in the UK. An extraordinary story.

Chatting to him got me thinking about the unsung heroes among us every day in Qatar, so I decided to try and smoke some of them out. Though some were a bit publicity shy, the folks you’ll meet in our Cover Story this month are truly going the extra mile. I hope you’ll be as inspired by them as I have been.

Our second feature this month is something that probably couldn’t be done anywhere else in the world because in Qatar, though our weather is unforgiving, we don’t have to hide away indoors. We have an abundance or air-conditioned outdoor spaces, where else can say that? We’ve rounded them up so you can keep your cool.

For this month’s Arts & Culture section, I was delighted to catch up with Qatar’s own musical superstar Dana Al Fardan, who shared lots of details about her life and what inspires her – a thoroughly interesting read.

As usual, we’ve been out and about trying some of the best food around town and one of my lucky colleagues headed to Sealine Beach, A Murwab Resort, for a most enjoyable short break – I wasn’t jealous much.

Elsewhere this month you’ll find news from the worlds of tech, motoring, fashion and more as well as information on events happening around town and summer camps.

Hope you enjoy the mag and, remember, wear sunscreen!

SING IT OUT

Want to send a greeting with a difference. Qatar now has it’s very own singing telegram service.

Sirène Singing Telegrams is the brainchild of Thomene Dilley, who regulars on the Qatar music scene will have spotted performing at The Clubhouse at the Golf Club and at The Londoner in Dusit Hotel and she will help you celebrate just about anything. She explains: “I will cover any occasion – from birthdays, anniversaries, graduations and corporate events all the way to farewell parties, trade shows, private parties or grand openings!

Relationship make-ups, family reunions, proposals, holiday parties and all special events. It could be ‘The-day-you-foundyour-brown-socks-under-the-bed’ day and I will sing you a song about it! No request is too silly. I have a list of songs but any special requests can be accommodated with a decent notice period.”

And, if you want your telegram in costume, that’s possible too.

“Marilyn Munroe, The Whacky Fairy, Diva Discobar and the WWII Jazz Diva are just some of the most requested,” says Thomene. But, if you have something special in mind, while naturally adhering to local laws and being respectful, well, as the lady said, no request is too silly. And you can even book add-ons such as balloons and flowers, every singing greeting is individually tailored. There’ll also be more singers joining the stable soon and a very special Arabic character.

Asked what prompted her to launch the service, Thomene explained: “I’ve always loved the element of surprise and I think a

personalised message in the form of a fabulous song brings the excitement around any event or special occasion to life.

“We are so immersed in technology these days, with our noses constantly in our phones and other devices, we lose sight of real life and the beauty it presents around us. So, I have made it my business to get up in your business through singing telegrams to convey well wishes the old-fashioned way. The idea is to leave the recipient feeling appreciated with a song in their heart and a memory that lasts.”

And, though Sirène Singing Telegrams is relatively new, Thomene has already had one request that she will always remember. A woman had found a sibling through DNA testing and her adoptive family booked a singing telegram to make sure she knew they supported her on her new journey. “I get to be a part of very personal and emotional moments with wonderful people and I feel it is such a privilege for me. That is all the more reason to be open to special requests so I can help honour these special memories,” says the singer.

Bookings are available from 9am to 9pm, Sunday to Thursday while Fridays and Saturdays are by request only. ✤

NATIONAL AIRLINE TRIUMPHS WITH MAJOR AWARDS

The country’s national carrier, Qatar Airways, has been recognised as the Airline of the Year by Skytrax for an unprecedented eighth time.

Returning to the top, the five-star airline also received three other prestigious titles: World's Best Business Class, World's Best Business Class Airline Lounge and Best Airline in the Middle East.

Qatar Airways’ home and hub, Hamad International Airport, was named World’s Best Airport in 2024 by Skytrax for the third time. The airport also received the award for Best Airport in the Middle East for the 10th time and the airport’s retail, Qatar Duty Free, received World's Best Airport Shopping for the second consecutive year.

This remarkable achievement is the first time that an airline, an airport and the airport’s retail have been crowned as World’s Best in all three Skytrax categories. And Qatar Airways becomes the first aviation group to win Best Airline, Best Airport and Best Airport Shopping, in the same year in Skytrax history

The Skytrax World Airline Awards, widely regarded as ‘the Oscars of the aviation industry’, represent the pinnacle of excellence in aviation and this year is the

eighth time since 2011 that Qatar Airways has been awarded Airline of the Year.

The delighted Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, said: “This is a proud moment for Qatar Airways. I am honoured to share this award with my dedicated team. This award is a testimony to our relentless commitment to providing unparalleled service and innovation. We look forward to continuing to serve our customers with the highest level of excellence.”

Skytrax Chief Executive Officer, Edward Plaisted, remarked: “Qatar Airways’ impressive achievement of winning the Airline of the Year title for the eighth time, alongside three additional top accolades, is a true testament to the airline’s high standards and dedication. Qatar Airways was and will continue to be customers’ favourite airline."

LOCAL HEROES

In this month's cover story, we shine a spotlight on ordinary individuals who are doing extraordinary things, pushing boundaries and making Qatar proud. From those who have turned devastating medical diagnoses into opportunities to help themselves and others to passionate conservationists, animal rescuers and social welfare advocates, these local heroes are going the extra mile to make a difference.

SANDEE THOMPSON MOHAMED ERAKY

The Warrior

A passionate member of Doha Dragons dragon boat team, following a bilateral mastectomy due to breast cancer in 2014, Sandee formed Doha Wireless Warriors, a community dragon boat group for cancer survivors, supporters and all community members who want to learn a new sport, be on the water, become part of a community and have fun while challenging themselves to do something new.

She says: “I had started dragon boating after my first breast cancer event while I was home in Canada and it was instrumental in my healing and recovery. I wanted women in Qatar to experience the same thing and to have a postsurgery activity that would help them regain their health, confidence and strength! We are the only team in the region and are a part of the IBCPC (International Breast Cancer Paddling Commission) as well as the IDBF (International Dragon Boat Federation).

“I think it is invaluable to be with other people who know how you feel...how hard it can be for many people to feel capable of trying new things again.”

Initially, the group would borrow boats but about six years ago they bought their own pink boat and members all proudly sport hot pink T-shirts. When they race, they also wear wigs to represent their cancer battles and build awareness. As well as the dragon boat team, Sandee also started a breast cancer WhatsApp support group which now has members all around the world from Qatar to South Africa and Lebanon to Wales. Many of the members have never met but it’s a resource to get information and support. She also speaks at public events and the group hosts workshops.

The Baby Steps Runner

Coach Mo, as he is known, is a dad of two and fellow cancer survivor who was involved with the Wireless Warriors but, when Covid struck and the only outdoor activity that could be done at a safe distance, he and Dr Soha Raslan founded the Baby Steps Marathon. Launched in April 2021, the idea of the initiative is that, while not everybody can, or even wants to, run a marathon, most people can run (jog or walk) a kilometre. And doing that every day, participants will eventually cover the distance of a marathon.

Baby Steps Marathon formed an online community with thousands of members and has since gone international with runners logging in as far afield as Egypt, Jordan and Jerusalem. Members get e-certificates and medals to mark their achievements as well as the support of their virtual and local counterparts.

In October 2022, Mo, Soha and their team created the Move Initiative aimed at people who can’t run but want to take ownership of their own fitness and well-being. It encourages participants, regardless of age and ability, to move for 30 minutes a day, which has been shown to have really positive health effects.

Mo himself as since completed three actual half marathons this year and is currently training for a half Ironman, which will see him swimming 1.8km, cycling 90km and running a half marathon and he is full of stories of other people who have gone on to complete feats such as pull-up and push-up challenges, long distance runs and more.

With the Baby Steps community he is determined to show people that virtually anyone can improve their life and fitness levels saying: “Do you want to live a healthy lifestyle whatever your age and health condition? Then join Baby Steps Marathon or the Move Initiative and remember, whatever happens in your life, keep moving!”

Midweek Massage

CLAIRE OLIVER

The Social Leader

Having been diagnosed with an aggressive tumour, Claire made the move from Korea to Qatar to be nearer her family in Europe while undergoing treatment. She took up a position at the Swiss International School of Qatar to lead citizenship projects having worked with Futures Foundation’s Global Social Leaders (GSL), a movement to enable young people to change the world for the better through social action and personal development, since 2020. GSL runs an annual competition which has, so far, involved more than 10,000 young people from across the globe doing amazing things to help others. Students work in groups to select a United Nations Sustainable Goal and create a project to address it within their communities, conducting research and needs analysis and measuring impact.

Clair explains: “During Covid, I wanted to break the narrative that young people must hide and cannot make a difference in society. Even though we were in lockdown, my grade sixes created a biodiversity garden. In 2021, the children transformed the garden into a Quranic garden and, the following year, we developed an international medical garden.

“Students used plants from around the world to make natural dyes and skincare that didn't contain puberty blocking carcinogens and didn't pollute the oceans. We reached the semi-finals of the GSL competition and we were invited to speak to HE Sheikha Al Mayassa Al Thani and the Minister of Education.

“We now partner with Qatar Museums to preserve oral Bedouin medical history and protect the bees. We now have six species of bees in our garden. The students have also published their research in an online magazine with 10,000 readers. Over two billion people worldwide rely on medicinal plants that they grow themselves and

students were sharing oral history from Pakistan, Syria and Palestine which we fact checked. We then grew the plants in our garden.”

And last year, Claire’s students went even further winning the GSL competition with a project that’s making a difference in countless lives. The youngsters realised they were (unconsciously) discriminating against the cleaning staff from Nepal and the Philippines because they were illiterate and not confident to speak to students. At first, students decided to do things for the cleaners. They decided to grow veg for them. Pretty soon, they learnt that the cleaners knew more about gardening then they did! The cleaning staff began planning a curriculum together with Claire and with young participants learning the medical value of sweet potato leaves, moringa and mango leaves.

Claire continues: “We also started teaching pre-k and Islamic studies in primary to empower the next generation. Even though most of our teams were illiterate, students learned that intelligence comes in many forms. Little ones have excellent observation skills to spot insects and the cleaners were plant experts. They learned that equality means doing things WITH the community and not FOR the community.

“We now have a medical madrasa built by children for children with a plant hospital for sick plants. We teach children from three years to students preparing for medical school. The discriminated communities manage the project and we share the food that is grown.”

And not content with all that, Claire’s young and her young charges work with Education Above All to help students in conflict zones and collaborate with the Ministry of Education to save sea turtles.

KRISTINA CHEFFINS

The Volunteer

Wanting to travel the world, Kristina came to Qatar in 2008, as a music teacher at Doha British School. But there was another reason too. She says: “The number one reason was because I was looking for a better climate following a Rheumatoid Arthritis diagnosis in 2005. I had two years of being almost bedridden as I couldn’t walk due to the pain and inflammation. Being a dancer and musician, I thought at the time my life was over. My hands were curled up and stuck and I couldn’t even dress myself.” And gratitude for medicated recovery led her to some awesome adventures during which she not only helped herself but others too. A big fan of Latino dancing, she decided to head to South America to undertake community work in the form of an organised trip to Peru to help older people who didn’t have family to support them.

At a community centre, she and other volunteers did handicrafts with the elders for them to sell. They also visited those who were too frail to reach the centre, which really opened Kristina’s eyes. She explains: “This was difficult to comprehend when you saw some of the huts they lived in. They literally had nothing but would welcome you with open arms anyway. I remember getting upset thinking what if this were my parents? How are there people living like this in the 21st century? But that is why we volunteer, to make what may seem like a small difference in someone's life, when in fact it’s worth more than any amount of money.”

She returned for a different South American adventure the following year and then, in 2016, decided to undertake India’s famous Rickshaw Challenge – 12 cities in 14 days driving a bright

pink and blue rickshaw! The event raises funds for Indian charities which help children access education and Kristina decided she also wanted to benefit Dementia UK since her father suffers from the disease – she and her driving partner won the prize for raising the most cash.

One of Kristina’s most memorable moments from the journey is being pulled over on a motorway (where rickshaws are not allowed) by a man who turned out to be the headmaster of a local school. Despite losing race time, he begged them to come and speak to his pupils and, believing it’s the little moments that make memories, they agreed.

Since then, Kristina has married and settled down in Qatar but she is still very much involved in community activities raising funds for cancer charities both here and in the UK. She’s also a tireless volunteer for animal welfare organisations QAWS, Qatar Tails and PAWS, rescuing strays and feeding in cat colonies on The Pearl.

Now working at the Swiss International School, she organises talent shows and the school production to raise money for adopted charity Education Above All and Al Fakhoora who work to give children who live in areas of conflict, access to education. And she’s very active as a director with The Doha Players.

Asked what makes her keep going above and beyond the call of duty, she explains: “I think, when you go through something yourself and come out the other side, it makes you think of others less fortunate. I like to make people feel happy and I believe if you do good then it will come back to you too.”

SARAH PAYNE

The Animal Rescuer

Ardent animal lover and advocate Sarah first came to Qatar in 2012, she left at the end of 2017 but missed it so much, she returned in 2022 to work in leadership development for Qatar Energy.

But, that’s the day job. On evenings, weekend and holidays, you’ll often find her engaged in animal rescue saying: “As all rescuers know, it is a never-ending task.”

Sarah had always loved animals and helped for many years through volunteering, feeding animals and helping with TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) programmes and, in 2020 she took on her own colony [the collective name for a group of stray cats]. She explains: “I was living in Abu Dhabi at the time and discovered several unneutered mums with multiple kittens. I had success in getting around 30 of them adopted, and that was just the start. Now I am part of the Qatar Tails community here in Doha: we manage multiple colonies, with a focus on TNR, rehoming and caring for animals; you can find QatarTails on Instagram and Facebook.”

Like every rescuer, Sarah has many heart-warming story but a favourite is of two kittens – one found in Abu Dhabi and the other in Dubai, both aged around five weeks and trying hard to survive. Sarah took the Abu Dhabi kitten home but soon realised he was

lonely and in need of a friend. The pair were brought together and looked so alike everyone thought they were brothers. They were very quickly best pals and were eventually adopted together to a home in the UK where they are living their best life as ‘twins’.

Such is Sarah’s dedication to the cause of animal welfare that she has written a book inspired by the subject. She explains: “CAA-R 42 is the book I published last year – CAA-R stands for Crimes Against Animals – Rehabilitation; let’s just say there is not much rehabilitation going on! It’s a futuristic thriller featuring a group of young entrepreneurs, supported by leaders around the world, who hold those who purposefully harm animals to account. It was very cathartic to write given the amount of abuse we see as rescuers, though it is also written to entertain and enthrall, even if you are not as crazy about animals as we rescuers are! It’s available on Amazon for anyone who would like to take a look, under my author-name, S. Payne. Based on the reviews I’ve received so far, I’ll be writing a sequel.”

And asked about the change she would most like to see for animals in Qatar, she concludes: “Microchipping and registration of all pets. Even better if the owner must show evidence of taking the animal with them or rehoming them appropriately before they leave the country.”

JOSE SAUCEDO SONDRA HOPE

The

Jose Daniel Saucedo Martinez came to Qatar with his wife’s job seven years. An industrial engineer consultant who also has a show on Qatar’s Spanish radio station Hola Qatar, he decided, almost straight away, that he wanted to make a contribution to the advancement of the country’s green movement and DeapQatar Conservation was born.

A volunteer organisation focussed on education, sustainability and conservation, leading the fight against plastic pollution and raising environmental awareness in Qatar, Deap started out as a group of friends hanging out at the beach ‘trying to do the right thing’. Now, seven years later, Deap has thousands of regular volunteers and conducts education, volunteerism, youth activation and empowerment. Throughout the year they organise dozens of education and awareness presentations for schools (from kindergarten to university level students), as well as for companies and government entities.

Every year Jose presents to thousands of students and mobilises them on field trips and clean-up drives across the country. To date Deap has organised more than 650 activations. He says: “My environmental work at DeapQatar Conservation is more than a full-time job considering the amount of time, work and effort I pour into it. It is more than nice posts on social media. Behind each activity there are hours of preparation, meetings, development of materials, editing of photographic materials, management of social media pages, relationship building and responding to people’s emails and messages, to mention just some of the work that goes on behind the scenes.”

As well as his own passion for environmental preservation, Jose says his own family is also a catalyst for his activities explaining: “I have three young kids, when they grow up and realise the mess we’ve left for them, they will ask me ‘dad you saw all this happening, so what did you do?’ Devoting my life to the advancement of the green movement in Qatar will answer that question. I’m just doing what I can to help make a difference.”

SURVIVOR

Diagnosed with cancer at the age of 24, Sondra has spent years fighting the disease and living in constant pain. However, she has not let it take over her life and has achieved more than many people do in a whole lifetime. Having left her job in ICT, she became a registered nutritionist and level three strength and conditioning coach who is now training for an ultra-marathon, one of the world’s toughest challenges.

She uses the training to distract from her condition, explaining: “I am always in pain. This is due to cancer and the lasting effects of treatment. So, it does limit my mobility and obviously the fatigue makes it difficult sometimes to find the energy to train. That is where discipline triumphs over motivation. When I run or cycle, I feel I have some sense of control over the pain as I am ‘inducing’ it by how hard or light I train. It makes me feel less anxious about the pain as I can justify it. Reason it. When I just sit on the couch and I have pain, I know there is only one reason I have pain, and that reason is pretty scary to me.”

And, asked how she finds the strength, she says: “One evening I was rocking my then three-month-old baby to sleep. The baby that I shouldn’t have been able to conceive post chemo. I remember looking down at her thinking, ‘I would die for this little girl’. And I realised, if I would die for her, surely I should live for her too. So that’s what I try to do. “I’m 39. I’ve been fighting stage four metastatic cancer for nine years. I opened my own health business and I’m a registered nutritionist. Mum to an 11-year-old, I started cycling competitively after my diagnosis and won the Ladies Cycle league in Doha. I’m now training to run an ultramarathon. I’m still in active treatment and have had various health setbacks and surgeries but I am still choosing to thrive rather than survive and be an example for my little girl. I also do motivational talks and workshops to raise awareness of stage four cancer and how it affects all ages.”

QATAR COOLERS

With temperatures well in the 40s, it’s that time of year when we’re all virtually housebound but, as with many things, our city has a few surprises in store with numerous outdoor spots equipped to stave off the heat. And, of course, if you’re not up for even some minimal activity you could always just chill with a nice cold sweet treat

BABY IT’S COLD OUTSIDE

Pppparks…brrr!

Al Gharrafa Park is Qatar’s first air-conditioned outdoor park which means you don’t have to sacrifice your exercise routine just because the weather’s scorching. The jogging and running tracks have builtin cooling vents to keep the temperature civilised and entry is free for all.

Oxygen Park in Education City is 13 hectares of lushness with abundant greenery and, since the paths boast air conditioning (AC), it’s made for enjoying all year round. And even better, it’s open till 10pm and free to enter.

Umbrella Park Doha OK, we’re cheating a bit with this one because it doesn’t have AC but, and this is important, the walkway is shaded by hundreds of colourful umbrellas so it’s not only a beautiful spot but also quite cool. Don’t forget to take your camera.

Umm Al Seneem Park is the place to go for early morning activities. It’s open from 5am to 12am and offers bragging rights if you want to take a stroll on the Guiness World Record-holding world’s longest air-conditioned walking (or jogging) track which measures just over a kilometre.

AND CHILL...

If you prefer to indulge in our more traditional pass times of promenading and enjoying a spot of retail therapy or an al fresco meal, Doha’s got you covered with even more cooled outdoor options.

21 High Street, Katara is described as ‘the ultimate outdoor shopping destination’ with some seriously impressive names on board such as Van Cleef & Arpels and Galeries Layayette. There are also plenty of restaurants and a superb kids’ area shaped like a giant wrapped gift. And, best of all, it’s all walkable as the whole area boasts AC. What more could a shopaholic want?

ALHAZM, a truly extravagant destination with stunning architecture and interior walls handcrafted with Tuscan marble, the courtyard could be the ultimate outdoor destination where the temperature as we were writing this at 10pm was 19ºC, as opposed to the 36-degree regular Doha heat. Head here for shopping, dining, cafés and events.

Lusail Boulevard, as we all know, is at the heart of the most technologically advanced city in the region, if not the world. So, it’s no surprise that there’s a centralised cooling system allowing you to take advantage of everything on offer, from shopping and restaurants to an entertainment park, awesome activations and light shows, all without breaking a sweat.

Place Vendôme Mall is also in Lusail City and is a truly spectacular sight taking its design inspiration from its Parisian namesake. There’s even a canal and a daily dancing fountain show and the air-conditioned courtyard makes this the ideal place to take a summer stroll.

Royal Plaza Mall, we’re cheating again as this one is not a chilled outdoor space but rather something we’re super excited to discover. This mall has its own salt cave. How cool is that? (See what we did there?) The place is filled with Himalayan salt in which you can sit, relax and enjoy a health-giving massage. Check it out @ saltcaveindoha

Tornado Dune Plaza in West Bay is Doha’s newest air-conditioned outdoor space. Opened just a couple of months ago, in the heart of the business district, there’s a big screen showing the football, a fun kids’ play area and cafés and restaurants with more coming soon.

West Walk also recently opened and is described as ‘providing the essentials for a contemporary live-work-play lifestyle’. It boasts Qatar’s longest cooling promenade making it, literally, one of the chillest places to be, all year round.

TO THE EXTREME

Not satisfied with air-conditioned parks and promenades? Want a really cool, cool summer? Once again, Qatar doesn’t disappoint with options to experience a really big chill.

Breathe Spa Snow Room, yes Doha is not short of cryo chambers and cold therapy sport recovery treatments, but this seems to be one of a kind, an actual room filled with snow which the spa describes as ‘Nature’s secret weapon’. Ideal after a sauna or steam session, the snow room's cooling environment promotes circulation, detoxification and relaxation as well as post-sport or injury recovery. Looks cool to us.

Snow Dunes is the first and only snow park in town and the first Arabian-themed snow park in the world. The snow is said to be identical to that found in nature, registering a super chilly minus four degrees, and the park has a great selection of rides and activities, such as ice skating and snow guns, and even offers the chance to climb to the top of Snowy Mount. Don’t forget to wrap up warm.

Sub Zero Ice Lounge is, honestly, a bit of a bonkers concept. But, when it’s so hot outside, we can certainly see where they’re coming from. There are ice sculptures aplenty as well as frosty culinary treats and creamy gelato as well as the obligatory warming hot chocolate to warm you inside as you enjoy a completely frozen experience.

And Just For Fun We couldn’t possibly end this feature without mentioning one very special chilly treat that’s exclusive to Qatar. The country’s tallest and coolest treat, which is found at Milky Ice Cream, Original Polish ice cream that’s pretty much never ending. Could you eat it all?

The MG 7 offers refinement and performance similar to leading brands at a stunningly attractive price.

MG Motor is a British-born automotive brand that is owned by the Shanghaibased carmaker SAIC Motor. Over the years, the company has steadily grown to become globally renowned for its premium automotive offerings and is once again making waves with the introduction of the first-ever large saloon, the 2024 MG 7, a model in the luxury category that boasts cutting-edge technology, performance and premium sophistication. This month, thanks to MG Motor Qatar, FACT got behind the wheel to thoroughly test the exciting new 2024 MG 7 in the 405 VTGI Trophy variant with a 2.0-litre petrol engine.

Dynamic Exterior

As the MG 7 came into view, the first thing we noticed was how well its appearance combines elements of power and elegance. The model boasts an eye-catching sleek fastback design that tastefully includes touches of British flair. In the front, the car has a wide stance with a sharply sculpted bonnet that gives a confident and commanding presence. This is further accentuated by the large muscular looking front grille that’s framed by the aggressive but stylish Digital Hunting LED headlights, daytime running lights and front fog lamps. The well-defined flanks feature body-coloured power folding side mirrors that have integrated turn signals, supercar-style frameless doors that add a spiffy touch, trendy looking 19-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels and a distinctive ‘Trophy’ badge on the left side signifying the car’s premium performance capabilities. At the rear, the sporty

aesthetic continues with a three-section active sport wing that not only adds a spectacular look to the vehicle but also helps in optimising downforce or reducing drag in different driving conditions. The stylish LED tail lights draw the width of the car and illuminate pleasingly and framing the bottom edge, is the sizeable chrome-tipped quad-exhaust system. Finally, the strikingly designed MG emblem, positioned aptly front and centre on the lip of the bonnet, is once again displayed prominently at the rear and just below that is the MG 7 badge exhibited boldly in a minimal but refined style.

Refined Interior

Switching our focus to the interior, our attention was drawn to the Storm Eye integrated motorsport seats that have been meticulously designed for ergonomic support and ultimate comfort. The top trim model also features seats crafted with luxury silk Nappa leather, microfibre suede and European textured piping for added sophistication. To further improve convenience and personalised comfort, the driver’s seat includes six-way electric adjustment for easy manoeuvring. The multi-functional steering wheel feels sturdy in hand and comes sensibly thought out with the crucial controls positioned conveniently. The centre console is well-designed with the ergonomically shaped gear selector conveniently placed closer to the driver. Space wise, there is sufficient leg, shoulder and head room for both front and rear row seats. There are reasonably sized bins and large cup holders, along with a spacious cubby hole. Also, we really liked how the panoramic sunroof let in plenty of natural light and

added to the already spacious feel. Finally, a sufficiently roomy luggage compartment adds to the practical nature of the MG 7.

Advanced Infotainment & Technology

The MG 7 features a singular large panel that’s split into two screens comprising a 10.25-inch instrument panel and a 12.3inch main infotainment screen. We found the system intuitive and easy to navigate. Also, just below the screen, are capacitive touch buttons for the climate control. There are rear AC vents conveniently placed for the passengers in the back, crucial during our hotter months, and the same panel also has two USB type C ports which are useful for those in the rear seats. The system

provides full Bluetooth connectivity and is compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. There is also a wireless phone charging port that proved handy. And, another notable feature was the in-car audio experience which was second to none thanks to the Bose sound system with nine dynamic speakers.

Imposing Power & Performance

Then came our favourite part of the day as we finally took the MG 7 out on the road. Our ride was powered by a 2.0-litre turbo variant petrol engine that comes with a nine-speed automatic transmission providing seamless smooth power delivery and responding effectively well in the handling and braking department. The MG 7’s engine can capably generate maximum 261hp and a torque of 405Nm, which caught us by surprise and made a favourable impression. This saloon can also accelerate from 0-100km/h in a respectable 6.5 seconds. When we switched to Sport mode there was a noticeable growl from the engine that was immediately reflected in the bump in driving performance. Additionally, there’s the conveniently located Super Sport Button on the steering wheel which we appreciated for quick switching. Finally, the MG 7 also offers a wide range of active safety features and advanced driver-assistance systems like front collision warning, emergency lane keep system and adaptive cruise control to ensure occupants’ peace of mind.

Our Verdict

Taking everything into consideration within this price range, the MG 7 makes a great impression and sets a high standard from the luxurious details to the powerful and immersive driving experience. ✤

The model boasts an eyecatching sleek fastback design that tastefully includes touches of British flair.”

You have been involved in various sectors across your professional career. What would you say has best prepared you for your role as GM in the homes retail industry?

My diverse experience across the hospitality, entertainment, medical aesthetics and beauty sectors has provided me with a multifaceted understanding of customer needs and market dynamics. Each role accumulated my skills in business development, strategic management and operational excellence, which are crucial in the competitive home retail industry. My background has taught me the importance of innovation, customer experience and adapting to market trends, all of which are essential in my current role.

What are the unique selling points of the brands you manage?

Home Boutique Qatar and Molteni Home stand out for their commitment to quality, design and customer satisfaction. Home Boutique Qatar offers a curated selection of premium home furnishings that blend elegance with functionality. Molteni Home is renowned for its Italian craftsmanship, innovative design and timeless appeal. Both brands ensure that every customer finds something that perfectly fits their home and lifestyle.

What have you identified as the latest homes trends to look out for as we move into the second half of 2024?

In the second half of 2024, nature-inspired design and wellness-

oriented interiors are becoming prominent trends. Natureinspired design includes elements like plants, natural light and organic materials to create a connection with the outdoors indoors. Wellness-oriented interiors focus on creating spaces that promote relaxation, mental well-being and overall health, incorporating features like air purification, ergonomic furniture and calming colour palettes.

What style do you most embrace in your own home and if you could have one designer piece, regardless of cost, what would it be?

I personally embrace a modern minimalist style that combines clean lines, neutral tones and functional elegance. If I could have one designer piece, it would be a classic Eames Lounge Chair. Its timeless design and unparalleled comfort make it a perfect addition to any home, embodying both style and functionality.

When you’re not at work, how do you like to spend your spare time in Qatar?

In my spare time, I enjoy exploring the rich cultural heritage and vibrant lifestyle of Qatar. I often visit the local markets and museums, indulge in the diverse culinary scene and spend time with my family and friends. Additionally, I like to stay active by engaging in outdoor activities and exploring the desert landscapes. ✤

A CHEF FOR ALL SEASONS

Konstantinos Panou, Cluster Executive Chef for Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels, Al Najada Hotels, and Al Najada Hotel Apartments speaks management style and the importance of seasonality.

How long have you been in your current position and what attracted to you to come to Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels?

I have been in my current position for one year. What attracted me to this role was the unique blend of traditional Qatari hospitality and modern luxury that the hotels offer. The rich cultural heritage and the vibrant atmosphere of Souq Waqif itself were also significant factors. I was excited about the opportunity to work in a setting that celebrates local culture and provides an authentic experience to guests. My first project was introducing a restaurant with local traditional dishes at Al Terrace in Souq Waqif. Additionally, the company profile and the portfolio of hotels under its umbrella are all luxury boutique brands.

You oversee a huge operation across six buildings in the iconic souq and covering nine food and beverage outlets plus outside catering and banqueting. How do you keep on top of it all, there must be significant challenges maintaining harmony and quality?

Being inspiring, open-minded and patient have been proven to me to be the elements to create a great start within the team, alongside the following attributes which are essential in leading a multicultural widespread operation.

Strong Leadership and Delegation – Effective leadership and the ability to delegate responsibilities are crucial. I ensure that each department has competent chefs who understand their roles and can make informed decisions. Regular meetings with the outlet chefs help in staying updated and addressing any issues promptly.

Clear Communication – Transparent and consistent communication is key. I am always open, realistic and share all the operational information so all team members know where we stand, what we are planning and what, realistically, we can achieve,

Quality Control and Standards – Always trying to maintain consistency, which requires involvement in the operations and

providing feedback so the team is aware of any necessary changes. Technology Integration – Leveraging technology for operations management, reservations, inventory control and customer feedback helps in streamlining processes and enhancing efficiency. Guest Feedback and Adaptation – Listening to guest feedback and making necessary adjustments is vital. We discuss the data we collect and analyse guest feedback, which helps in continuous improvement.

Team Harmony and Morale – Fostering a positive work environment and team spirit is crucial. Regular team-building activities, recognition programmes and open-door policies help in maintaining harmony and morale among staff. By focusing on these areas, I strive to ensure that our operations run smoothly, maintaining the high standards of service and quality our guests expect and deserve.

Are there any upcoming openings, new menus or special offerings that our readers should be looking out for over the coming months?

We have planned new menus and concept refreshes for all the souq outlets, which we will start from September. We will also be opening a new outlet offering pure Greek traditional taverna food at Al Shurfa.

What is your signature dish, how was it developed and what makes it popular?

I cannot say there is a signature dish for any chef, all of our creations are signatures. I am trying to use more seasonal products as we did in two of our summer feature dishes, Peach Salad and Lemon Crust Salmon. June and July are the period for peaches, lemons and eggplant that are growing in Mediterranean yards and it is a good idea to try to follow the seasonality, something we are losing with globalisation and I am sure some of the new generation have no idea which month produce naturally grows. Each of our food and beverage outlets has a signature summer dish. ✤

ROLLING IN THE FLAVOURS

EA discovered a space full of culinary adventures and trending new tastes on a visit to Sushi Library.

When it comes to dining out with my two sons, there's one cuisine that never fails to bring a smile to their faces: sushi. With their discriminating taste and love for all things sushi, finding the perfect spot is always an adventure. This time, our culinary journey led us to Sushi Library, a gem tucked inside the Parisian-inspired Place Vendôme Mall, in the heart of Lusail.

Conveniently located on the ground floor, Sushi Library is comfortably situated in a cosy corner of the bustling mall. The ambience is inviting with various seating options. Whether you prefer to dine inside the restaurant, enjoy the lively atmosphere of the mall from an outdoor seat or opt for the bench seating, there's a perfect spot for every dining occasion.

As soon as we settled in, our experience began with a refreshing twist. While waiting for our food, we were offered drinks and chose the Mojito mocktail. It was a perfect blend of sweet and tangy flavours – lemon, mint and brown sugar mixed with ice and soda, topped with blue syrup. It was the ideal start to what promised to be a memorable meal.

The Restaurant Manager, Faizan, took great care of us. His recommendations sounded irresistible and we decided to trust his expertise. Each time a dish was served, he proudly explained its preparation and popularity, adding a personal touch that greatly enhanced our dining experience.

We began our meal with an array of nigiri. The Unagi, Hamachi

and, our favorite of the set, the Torch Salmon, were the perfect appetisers to warm up our taste buds. Each piece was a bite of perfection, showcasing the fresh, high-quality ingredients Sushi Library is known for.

Next up was the Sushi Bento named Salmon Delight, a musttry for lovers of this tasty fish. It was a delightful assortment of salmon sashimi, nigiri, sushi and salad. The sashimi was melt-inyour-mouth tender, the nigiri had the perfect balance of rice and fish, and the sushi rolls were bursting with flavour. The salad, with its light and tangy dressing, provided a refreshing contrast to the richness of the fish.

One dish I particularly loved was Chef Suli’s fried rice. This Japanese fried rice, made with chicken, prawns, soy sauce and a medley of veggies, was incredibly appetising. Each bite a harmonious blend of textures and flavours, making it a standout on the menu.

The Seafood Saucy Wonton was another highlight. This dish featured a savoury mix of steamed white fish, prawns, crab and corn, all enveloped in a juicy and sweet gyoza wrapper. The oyster sauce and chili garlic dip added a deliciously spicy kick that complemented the delicate piquancy of the seafood.

One of the most memorable parts of our meal was the Katsu Ritual. We chose the Chicken Katsu, and the traditional sauce was prepared right at our table. Grinding the sesame seeds, pouring the sauce and mixing it created a fun and interactive experience. The chicken itself was perfectly crispy on the outside and tender

on the inside, making it delightful even without the sauce. Then came the signature rolls, starting with the Nama Spring Roll. This heavenly mix of prawn tempura, avocado, cucumber, lettuce, carrot and cilantro, all rolled to crispy perfection and dipped in sweet chilli sauce, was an explosion of tastes and textures.

The Tempura Chips, the most popular item on their sushi menu, came next. This fried sushi roll, made with prawn tempura, cheddar cheese, chips and seasoned with sweet chilli sauce, quickly became our top pick. It's easy to see why it's the restaurant's best-seller; each bite was a perfect blend of crunch, creaminess and a hint of spice.

We then tried the Crunchy Crab Roll, a newer addition to their signature rolls. Made with soft shell crab, fried fish, avocado, carrot and cucumber, and perfected with cream cheese, togarashi, spicy mayo and tare sauce, this roll was a delightful mix of flavours that danced on our palates.

The highlight of the ensemble was Chef SuLi’s Supreme Roll, served theatrically with dry ice that teased our senses with its dramatic presentation and enticing aroma. This roll, a mix of caviar, salmon, prawns, avocado, tobiko, crab mayo and tare sauce, was a true masterpiece, both visually and in taste.

Despite being full, we couldn't resist the temptation of Japanese desserts. We opted for the Yuzu Brulee and Mochi Ice Cream.

The brulee was rich and creamy, with a crackable toffee crust that was aromatic and full of citrus zing. The ice cream, with its soft, chewy exterior and smooth, milky sweet filling, was a delightful end to our meal.

Sushi Library’s menu is a testament to Japanese-inspired dishes tailored for every palate. It caters to both newbies and seasoned fans of Japanese cuisine, showcasing the best flavours while highlighting fresh, seasonal and impeccably sourced ingredients.

With locations at City Center Mall, Doha Festival City, Place Vendôme Mall and Villagio Mall, Sushi Library celebrates the joy of sharing food around the table. We enjoyed an incredible variety of dishes this time, and we can't wait to go back and explore more, especially their ramen selection next time. ✤

A CARNIVORE'S PARADISE

Cayetana Moret Gual embarked on a journey to discover the exciting ambience and culinary offerings at Hunters Room & Grill.

In the vibrant heart of Doha, cocooned amidst the dynamic rhythm of the city, The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa emerges as an oasis of refined luxury. Its strategic position is just moments away from iconic landmarks such as Souq Waqif and the Doha Corniche. Tonight, our culinary voyage beckons us to the doorstep of Hunters Room & Grill, the hotel’s modern steakhouse, where an enticing fusion of Latin American flavours awaits. Curated by the culinary virtuosos Chef Martín Repetto, Executive Chef, from Argentina and Ramón Castillo, Chef De Cuisine (Hunters Room & Grill), from Mexico, the menu promises an epicurean odyssey spanning the breadth and depth of the Latin American continent. As we step into the restaurant on the mezzanine floor, we are enveloped in an atmosphere of understated elegance. The warm embrace of wooden elements, interwoven with the soft glow of ambient lighting, creates an inviting ambience that speaks of refined sophistication. Plush green leather armchairs beckon, offering respite from the bustling city outside, while iron sculptures imbue the space with a touch of whimsy. Our senses are further tantalised by the sight of the open glass kitchen, where flames flicker hypnotically atop the grill, promising culinary delights in the making. With a gracious welcome from Chef Martín himself, we embark on a culinary voyage of discovery, eager to savour every moment.

Our evening unfurls with a flourish as a symphony of flavours dances across our palates, commencing with a tantalising array of starters. A platter of Argentinian Chicharrón Bread with smoked paprika and hazelnut butter sets the stage for the culinary extravaganza to come. The crisp crunch of the bread gives way to the succulent richness of chicharrón, while the velvety smoothness of the butter adds a touch of indulgence to each bite. Soon, a procession of cold and hot starters graces our table, each dish a masterpiece in its own right. The guacamole, a beloved Mexican staple, delights with its creamy texture and vibrant flavours, while the Ceviche de Langostinos Patagónicos is a dish that encapsulates the essence of Latin American coastal cuisine. Originating from the shores of Peru but reimagined with an Argentinian twist by Chef Martín, this ceviche is a testament to culinary innovation at its finest. The star of the dish is undoubtedly the Patagonian prawns; these succulent crustaceans are marinated to perfection in a vibrant concoction of lime juice, passion fruit and mango, imparting a tropical burst to each bite. One of the defining elements of this ceviche is the use of leche de tigre or tiger’s milk, a traditional Peruvian marinade renowned for its invigorating properties. Each spoonful of ceviche is a revelation, a symphony of flavours, leaving a lingering impression of culinary excellence.

The Cachapas, a Venezuelan delicacy, captivate with their delicate balance of sweet and savoury, enhanced by a medley of tantalising sauces. These golden corn cakes, crafted from tender, yellow corn, are a celebration of the land’s bounty. As we take our first bite, we are greeted by the delicate sweetness of the corn, its natural juices shining through with each mouthful. But it’s the decadent filling of molten mozzarella cheese that steals the show, oozing out with each indulgent bite. The interplay of flavours is further enhanced by the tangy notes of the Pico de Gallo, the creamy richness of the sour cream and the vibrant burst of the tomato chutney.

Notably, the Salsa Tatemeda imparts a smoky taste that lingers on the palate and adds depth and complexity to the dish that is truly unparalleled. Prepared using a special cooking process that involves grilling and carbonising the ingredients before grinding them with a volcanic stone, the Salsa Tatemeda is a testament to Chef Ramón’s ingenuity and skill. The crescendo of our dining experience arrives with the pièce de résistance: the Carnivores Platter. This culinary masterpiece is indeed a carnivore’s dream come true, boasting an impressive selection of 1,265g of meats that showcase the finest cuts from around the world. From succulent striploin, skirt steak, ribeye and chicken to tender lamb chops, each cut is a testament to the impeccable quality and craftsmanship that defines Hunters Room & Grill. But it’s not just about the meat – the accompanying sides elevate the dish to new heights of indulgence. The truffle mashed potatoes, creamy and decadent, melt in the mouth with each forkful, while the grilled asparagus adds a refreshing crunch to the ensemble. And then there’s the smoked provoleta, a true showstopper that infuses the room with its tantalising aroma. As the glass cover is lifted to reveal the smouldering cheese within, we are transported to a world of culinary wonder. And let’s not forget the array of sauces that accompany the platter, from the traditional chimichurri to the fiery pepper and mushroom, each one adds its own unique twist to the dining experience. As the curtain falls on our epicurean odyssey, we are treated to a denouement of desserts that elevate sweetness to an art form. The Caramel Flan de Dulce de Leche enchants with its creamy decadence, while the Homemade Chocolate Cake surprises with its luscious coulant-style melting centre. However, it is the Alfajores

served with Mate Ice Cream that steals the spotlight, its theatrical presentation captivating our senses as the thin black film enveloping the dish is set ablaze, revealing the delectable ensemble within. In summation, our dining experience at Hunters Room & Grill transcends mere culinary indulgence, evolving into a multisensory journey that celebrates the rich tapestry of Latin American cuisine. From the inviting ambience to the exquisite flavours, every aspect of the evening is a testament to the artistry and passion of its creators, leaving an indelible impression on our palates and hearts alike.✤

THE DELICATE ART OF DINING

AMS embarked on a delightful

journey through the rich and diverse landscape of Chinese cuisine at Miss Wong at Hilton Salwa Beach Resort & Villas.

The moment we walked into Miss Wong, we entered a world of refined beauty. Its décor, a harmonious blend of traditional Chinese elements and modern sophistication, set the stage. The vibrant stainedglass windows cast colourful reflections on the plush red carpets, creating a warm and inviting glow. Intricately designed wooden screens and elegant chandeliers added an air of grandeur, while the plush red leather seating offered a comfortable yet luxurious space to dine. Once seated, we soon found ourselves savouring a selection of exquisite appetisers, marking the start of our culinary journey.

Salad and Soup Sensations

To whet our appetites, we began with a vibrant salad of Chinese enoki mushrooms, broccoli, onions and wood ear mushrooms, each ingredient adding its unique texture and flavour. Wood ear mushrooms are popular in Chinese cuisine offering numerous health benefits. Diners could request a gluten-free option with a zesty lemon dressing replacing the soy sauce, making it both versatile and health-conscious. Packed with a delightful spicy punch, the hot and sour egg drop soup featured ingredients that not only enhanced the texture but also tasted exquisite.

Sizzling Hot Starters

Soon after the soup was cleared from our table, we happily received crisp dumplings, pan-fried to perfection and served with a ginger and soy sauce. These dumplings, with an assortment of vegetable, chicken and shrimp fillings, offered a variety of textures and flavours that tantalised the palate. Delicate spinach

rolls featured spinach enfolded in a light, translucent wrapper, providing a refreshing and light bite. Wasabi-infused prawns added a spicy kick, perfectly balancing the mildness of the other appetisers and setting the stage for the main courses.

Beverage Bliss

In between courses, we sipped on a selection of expertly crafted mocktails. The mandarin passion fruit option was a vibrant, citrusy delight, with the sweet and tangy notes of passion fruit perfectly balanced by the bright, zesty flavour of mandarin. The tea cucumber oolong mocktail, on the other hand, was a more subdued, refreshing drink, with the delicate floral notes of oolong tea complemented by the crisp, cool taste of cucumber.

Marvellous Mains

Soon, meticulously crafted dishes from various Chinese provinces began to arrive. Our knowledgeable waiter, Saktan, expertly guided us through the menu, sharing valuable insights.

Brought to the table and carved by Chef Li Qiang with precision, the renowned Peking duck was pure theatre. The tender, crispyskinned duck was an indulgence, perfectly paired with thin pancakes, fresh cucumber, spring onion and a rich hoisin sauce, making it a feast for the senses.

Elevated by the addition of cashew nuts and spring onions, the sweet and sour crispy prawns were another highlight. The shellfish were perfectly cooked, their crispness balanced by the tangy and sweet sauce that coated them.

The Wagyu beef with asparagus was sublime, cooked to perfection in a savoury black bean sauce. The tender, marbled beef paired wonderfully with the fresh, crunchy asparagus, creating a harmonious blend of textures and flavours.

Finally, the chicken clay pot dish was a comforting delight. The tender pieces of chicken were bathed in a fragrant, savoury broth,

enriched with vegetables and herbs that added layers of complexity.

Delicate Desserts

For dessert, we indulged in a refreshing mung bean creation. This delicate, slightly sweet concoction offered a light, invigorating end to our meal. Its smooth texture and subtle flavours were a gentle finale that left the palate cleansed and refreshed. Following this, we enjoyed the lychee jasmine mousse cake. This standout dessert featured an airy texture that melted in the mouth, infused with the delicate floral notes of jasmine and the sweet, exotic taste of lychee. The mousse cake was a perfect blend of traditional Chinese flavours and modern pastry techniques, leaving us thoroughly satisfied and impressed.

As the final notes of the afternoon's symphony faded away, we savoured the delicate, floral essence of jasmine tea to round off the meal. The subtle sweetness and delicate aroma of the infusion perfectly complemented the lingering flavours of the dishes, leaving my palate refreshed and rejuvenated.

In short, our afternoon was a delightful journey through the rich and diverse landscape of Chinese cuisine. From the exquisitely crafted appetisers to the masterful main courses and the refreshing, innovative desserts, every dish was a testament to the culinary expertise of the Wong family. The restaurant successfully combined tradition with modernity, creating a harmonious and sophisticated feast that left us thoroughly satisfied. As a parting gift, we received a fortune message tied in a red bow, adding a touch of whimsy to the experience. This thoughtful gesture was the perfect end to the perfect afternoon. ✤

OF WINGS AND THINGS

A perfect fusion of live sports, exquisite flavours and unmatched ambience awaited EA on a visit to Shehrazad Lounge & Terrace.

Nestled in one of Qatar’s premier locations, the Radisson Blu Hotel, Doha, in Al Muntazah, is renowned for its enduring and acclaimed restaurant outlets. Among these, the Shehrazad Lounge & Terrace stands out, blending an exceptional dining experience with the thrill of live sports.

Recently, a friend and I decided to revisit the restaurant for a longoverdue catch-up. Our previous visit left a lasting impression and we were eager to see if it still held up. On arrival, we were warmly welcomed at the reception and ushered to our table.

The seating options ranged from side benches to central tables and high tables directly in front of the numerous big screens – at least 12 of them, perfect for watching your favourite games. The eclectic mix of seating options offered the perfect vantage point for catching every moment of the action.

The layout is impressive, featuring an open kitchen that adds to the vibrant atmosphere. The venue boasts both an indoor area and a cosy outdoor garden area. Despite the usual heat, the outdoor seating was surprisingly comfortable.

We were greeted by Armando Borges, the Restaurant Manager and the driving force behind Shehrazad since 2008.

He enthusiastically discussed the live sport they air, including Premier League, Champions League, Europa League, rugby, MotoGP, Formula 1, tennis, basketball, golf, boxing, FA Cup, English League Cup, cricket, and the Turkish league. His passion for sports and excellent service set the tone for the evening as he introduced us to Mary, our dedicated staff member for the night.

She expertly guided us through the menu with the ease of someone who knows it like the back of her hand. With her recommendations, we embarked on a feast of masterfully created comfort food that promised to tantalise our taste buds. While waiting for our food, we explored the outdoor area, appreciating its friendly atmosphere and comfortable seating.

We couldn't resist the allure of dining al fresco and, surprisingly, the evening air felt cool and welcoming, a stark contrast to the scorching heat of the day.

First to arrive was the Chef’s Salad. This hefty portion of cheddar cheese, turkey ham, roast beef, cucumber, tomato, lettuce and egg, drizzled with French dressing, was a feast for the senses. The flavours of the roast beef and ham perfectly complemented each other, making it a uniquely satisfying starter.

Next up were the famed chicken wings, served with an array of sauces that promised to ignite our taste buds. Each bite was a revelation, with the tender meat enveloped in a blanket of flavours that ranged from smoky barbecue to fiery hot sauce. It was impossible to resist the temptation to indulge, so beware, these chicken wings are addictive, one bite leads to another, making them arguably the best chicken wings I have ever tasted.

Before we knew it, we had polished off the entire plate.

For our main courses, we chose the Grilled Salmon Steak and Grilled Tenderloin Steak both of which surpassed our already high expectations.

The salmon was a triumph of culinary finesse, its delicate flesh yielding to the fork with a satisfying resistance. Paired with garden

vegetables and a tangy lemon butter sauce, it was a dish fit for royalty. The tenderloin, on the other hand, was a testament to the art of grilling, its charred exterior giving way to a juicy interior that practically melted in the mouth. Lean yet succulent, the tenderloin had a fine buttery texture and was perfectly cooked to mediumrare. Accompanied by crisp potato wedges and a green pepper sauce, it was a symphony of flavours that left us speechless. As the evening wore on, we found ourselves drawn into the rhythm of Shehrazad's unique charm. The atmosphere was electric, charged with the excitement of live sports and the camaraderie of fellow enthusiasts. It was easy to see why this place has long held such a special place in the hearts of its patrons, myself included.

Shehrazad also offers enticing promotions and weekly specials. Highlights include the Saturday and Sunday Roast, a guest favourite, and the Euro Cup special menu, which we will be returning for. Shehrazad Lounge & Terrace continues to be a formidable force on Qatar’s restaurant scene. Despite the addition of many new restaurants, it remains a top choice for its vibrant atmosphere, excellent service and outstanding food. If you’re in Al Muntazah and looking for a perfect venue to watch your favourite match, catch up with friends or simply unwind after a long day, Shehrazad should be at the top of your list. ✤

THE PERFECT GETAWAY

AMS discovered natural beauty coupled with the epitome of luxury on a visit to Sealine Beach.

Walking into Sealine Beach, a Murwab Resort, we were immediately taken by the sheer elegance of the space. The lobby gleamed with polished marble floors, reflecting the stunning blue and clear glass light fixtures hanging from the ceiling. Plush seating in soft beige tones was complemented by vibrant floral arrangements that added a burst of colour and freshness.

Elegant Accommodation

We were warmly greeted by James, a hotel veteran of more than 20 years, who promptly showed us to our Standard King room. Our accommodation perfectly encapsulated the luxury of beachside living. The décor was elegant, featuring soothing neutral tones that created a calm and inviting atmosphere. The king-sized bed, adorned with plush pillows and crisp linens, was the centrepiece, promising a restful night's sleep. The 36sq/m footprint offered an incredible amount of space to unpack. Large windows allowed natural light to flood the space, leading to our private balcony with breathtaking views of the lush gardens and beach beyond. Every detail, from the soft lighting to the stylish accents, contributed to a sense of understated elegance. It’s worth noting that the resort offers eight accommodation options to suit different preferences, from standard rooms with stunning garden and beach views and spacious Murwab Suites ideal for families, all the way up to the opulent Royal Villas, each with private patios or direct beach access.

Afternoon Treats

With our suitcases emptied, we were invited to Al Odaid restaurant for afternoon refreshments. We started with creamy hummus, its smooth texture perfectly balanced with a hint of tanginess, and moutabel, rich and smoky, bringing an earthy depth to our palates. The kibbeh, crispy on the outside and tender within, was a hearty treat, while the chicken wings were succulent, seasoned to perfection, and offered a satisfying bite. Accompanying these dishes was a selection of fresh, warm bread, its aroma filling the room. We concluded with Umm Ali, a warm, comforting dessert infused with the delicate essence of cinnamon and vanilla. The service throughout was impeccable, with Hani leading an attentive staff who anticipated our every need.

An Idyllic Evening

As the evening approached, we were treated to a romantic dinner on the beach. A table was arranged with a heartshaped decoration, surrounded by twinkling lights that cast a romantic glow over the sands. Our personalised menus featured exquisite dishes, starting with arancini. These crispy, golden balls revealed a fluffy, savoury centre that was an absolute delight. The chicken soup that followed was hearty and flavourful, warming us from the inside out.

For the main course, we savoured enormous tenderloins, cooked to perfection and beautifully seasoned. The steaks were accompanied by a medley of fresh vegetables and creamy mashed potatoes, each bite a testament to the chef's skill and attention to detail. This memorable meal concluded our first day, leaving us thoroughly satisfied and enchanted by the experience.

Morning Beachfront Stroll

The next day, we awoke to a buffet breakfast that included our choice of eggs—we chose eggs Benedict—a selection of cheeses, breads, cooked items and vibrant salads, all accompanied by a range of beverages. However, we couldn’t wait to explore outside. Beyond our dining room lay lush gardens, a vibrant oasis with swaying palm trees. Also, a stunning beach with private cabanas, offering seclusion and luxury. In the gardens, staff were setting up inflatable bouncy castles for families to enjoy as well as padel and other activities. An Olympic-sized swimming pool surrounded by sunbeds was on the right side of the property, while a shallower children's pool was on the left. We discovered two outdoor dining options: La Merenda, an Italian restaurant, and Reef Burger. The Edge, right on the beach, served fresh beverages and hookah, providing options for all age groups.

Rejuvenating Activities

We decided to work off some more calories with a visit to

the resort's state-of-the-art gym. The space was a fitness enthusiast’s dream, boasting an impressive selection of free weights, cutting-edge machines and a variety of cardio equipment. The atmosphere was invigorating, with natural light pouring through large windows, creating a motivating environment to work out.

Following our exercise session, we indulged in some relaxation at the steam room. The warm, enveloping steam was a perfect antidote to our workout. Next, we treated ourselves to a massage in the dedicated room, where our skilled therapist worked her magic, easing our muscles and providing a deep sense of tranquillity and relaxation.

A Sumptuous Brunch

After a few hours of relaxation, we made our way to the brunch at Al Odaid, eager to sample what was on offer. The spread was an impressive array of cold starters, hearty mains and delectable desserts. We began with a selection of traditional cold mezze, including creamy hummus, smoky moutabel, and tangy tabbouleh, each bite bursting with authentic flavours. Crispy spring rolls added a delightful crunch to our palates.

For the main course, we enjoyed perfectly grilled kingfish, its smoky aroma and tender flesh tantalising our taste buds. The rotisserie chicken was succulent and juicy, complemented by creamy beef stroganoff, roasted potatoes, with a crispy exterior and fluffy interior, and a medley of steamed vegetables, all cooked to perfection. Dessert was a sweet finale, featuring Umm Ali, a warm, comforting pudding laced with cinnamon and nuts, and a selection of delicate, honey-drenched Baklava.

Adding to the lively atmosphere, an acoustic guitarist entertained us with renditions of favourite Arabic songs, quickly getting patrons on their feet with his lively and exciting performance. Throughout the meal, the servers were incredibly attentive, promptly clearing dishes and ensuring our glasses were never empty. Their impeccable service added to the event, making it both relaxing and indulgent.

Afternoon Relaxation

After our delightful brunch, we decided to head back to the beach. The rhythmic sound of the waves provided a soothing backdrop as some guests enjoyed water sports while others splashed in the water with their children. As we took in the views, we couldn't help but fall asleep, drifting off to the sound of the sea.

Dinner at La Merenda

After a relaxing afternoon, we looked forward to dinner at La Merenda. The restaurant's vibrant Italian colours created a lively atmosphere with bright reds, whites and greens. We began with a creamy burrata, perfectly paired with fresh tomatoes and basil. Next, we enjoyed two pizzas – Funghi with a medley of mushrooms and Picante with spicy beef pepperoni. The crisp, thin crust and balanced

toppings were amazing. The Spaghetti Carbonara, rich with parmesan cheese and beef bacon, was indulgent. Dessert was a silky Matcha Panna Cotta, the perfect end to our meal. We then retired to our balcony to enjoy the sea view and gentle breeze.

Our last indulgence

In the morning, we enjoyed one final lavish breakfast before making our way to the beach. It was there that we had a chance to reflect on our stay. In short, the elegant accommodation, exceptional dining, breathtaking scenery and first-class amenities all combined to create a seaside paradise. Whether lounging in the pristine private cabanas, indulging in the food or simply soaking in the natural beauty, every moment felt like the epitome of luxury and relaxation. What made the experience truly special was the warm and attentive service from the staff who ensured our needs were exceeded at every turn. The resort is a true gem that perfectly blends modern amenities with the stunning natural beauty of the Arabian Gulf. It is a place where guests can escape, unwind and reset. ✤

BEAT THE HEAT!

As the temperature steadily rises, there’s only so much an air-conditioner can do for you. Sometimes it’s just best to do yourself a favour and leave the heat behind, even if just for a bit!

Whether seeking adventure, cultural exploration or just relaxation, a refreshing vacation to preferably a cooler place might just be your best bet for a much-needed escape from the excessive heat.

Here are a few places that we’d recommend:

Oslo, Norway

Whether cloaked in snow or bathed in midnight sun (the sun doesn’t actually set here from end of May until late July), there are few places across the globe that are as innately beautiful as Norway. From the soaring mountains to the bright blue glacier lakes, breathtaking fjords, large dense forests and more, the Norwegian landscape is uniquely unparalleled. And sitting on the southern coast at the head of the Oslo Fjord is the country’s capital and largest city, Oslo, which exceptionally combines forest landscapes with high-end architecture and landmarks. Although June, July and August are summer here, the temperatures average between 13°C and 25°C and it's the perfect time for travellers to pay a visit. The Oslo Opera House, one of Scandinavia’s most iconic modern buildings, has a structure resembling an iceberg rising from the water and its terrace boasts fantastic views of the city and the fjord at sundown. Check out Vigeland Park – the world’s largest sculpture park showcasing works by a single artist. Then take a trip to the Bygdøy, a peninsula with some of Oslo’s most popular hiking trails, beaches and museums, including the Fram Museum and the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History. Make sure to visit a floating outdoor sauna along the harbour where you first heat up and then finish with a refreshing plunge right there in the fjord. And finally, you have to hit the water in a kayak or take a truly awe-inspiring cruise experience exploring the fjords.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Boasting a vibrant culture, rich history, an ingeniously elaborate canal system that’s stood the test of time and more, Amsterdam is truly one of the most beautiful and famous cities in the world. Rife with artistic heritage, gabled facades, canals criss-crossed by stone and steel arched bridges, Mediaeval churches and antiquated market squares, the Netherlands’ charming capital is among the best-preserved 17th-century cities in Europe and genuinely worth the visit. With the weather at its pleasant best between May and August, now would be an ideal time to book your tickets. Cycling is a way of life here and the best way to get around since the city is equipped with an elaborate network of cycle paths. So rent a bike and ride out exploring! Spend time at the world-class Rijksmuseum or get lost for hours appreciating the stunning works at the Van Gogh Museum. The city is home to 165 waterways, including the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Canal Ring Area that dates back to the 17th century; it would be amiss not to take a canal cruise

and admire the city from a different laid-back perspective. Catch some of the best touring musical acts from around the world at massive Ziggo Dome or the iconic Paradiso. Then get tickets and catch the local football club AFC Ajax in action at the Johan Cruyff Arena. But most importantly, don’t forget to take timely breaks enjoying the vast variety of delicious food and just wandering through the city’s various parks, amongst which, the sprawling and lush Vondelpark is an absolute must-visit.

Salalah, Oman

Nestled in the southern region of Oman and offering a compelling retreat from the scorching desert heat and urban bustle typically associated with the Middle East, is Salalah, the third largest city in the Sultanate. Unlike the arid landscapes prevalent in much of Oman, Salalah presents a lush, green contrast, especially during Khareef (autumn in Arabic) – the monsoon season in Oman taking place from June to early September. This period, marked by cooler temperatures and gentle rains, transforms Salalah into a verdant paradise that attracts both regional travellers seeking respite from the heat and international tourists exploring the region. But Salalah’s appeal lies not only in its climatic anomaly but also in its diverse natural landscapes. Travellers can visit the long stretches of pristine beaches flanked by rugged cliffs and tropical forests, where you’d be surprised to find plenty of tropical and subtropical fruits like coconuts, bananas, papayas and more. Nature lovers must visit the natural wonder that’s located in the Dhofar

mountains – Wadi Darbat. Beautiful and scenic, it boasts lush greenery, tranquil pools and a stunning waterfall, yes you heard right, a waterfall in the Middle East! It flows heavily, especially during the monsoon season, so be sure to visit here. A diverse range of wildlife, including birds, mammals and reptiles can also be found. Without a doubt, the boat ride along the natural canal at Wadi Darbat is an absolute must-do activity. For history buffs, Salalah presents a treasure trove of archaeological wonders and cultural heritage sites. The ancient port city of Sumhuram and Al Baleed, with its well-preserved ruins, provide insights into Oman's maritime history. Frankincense was shipped to Africa, Europe, India, China and other parts of world from here. The Museum of the Frankincense Land chronicles the significance of this aromatic resin in the region’s historical trade routes. The grand Sultan Qaboos Mosque stands as a testament to contemporary Omani architecture and religious devotion. Also, take time to experience the local cuisine at vibrant souqs, rummage for traditional handicrafts or simply relax on the tranquil shores of the various beautiful beaches. The unique blend of temperate climate, stunning natural beauty and rich cultural heritage makes visiting any of the above mentioned places an ideal break.✤

SHARP STITCHING AND SUMMER HUES

The latest men’s and women’s collections from Italian house Brunello Cucinelli boast ethereal pieces in pale colours to catch the essence of summer coupled with stand-out darker pieces that will take you effortlessly from day to night.

In the women’s collection, equilibrium is key, seen in the balance between opposing forces – minimal and ornate, aesthetics and functionality. Garments that are pure and simple and those that are special are brought together with a sense of timeless style.

Sartorial quality offers a fundamental reference point for contemporary balance, expressing an apparent simplicity, a refined effortlessness. Beyond the confines of blazers and suits that are at the heart of the collection, the sartorial interpretation also spreads to outerwear, where drawstrings and hoods give way to trench coats, raincoats and overcoats with a timeless flair. The tidy appeal of matching sets is extended to biker jackets, shirts and utility jackets combined with skirts, trousers and shorts.

Key colours are milky white, sand, rope and quartz greys, hay and concrete alongside interventions of dark brown and black. The quest for elegance is at the heart of the menswear collection which features fresh colours, soft volumes, carefully balanced garments, paisley patterns and details inspired by the French Riviera.

Unique natural textures, délavé and slub effects enhance the summery colours, which pair with timeless neutrals to create a new and intense balance. Pink, raspberry, turquoise and mauve not only influence the patterns on shirts and tees, but also add refined accents to sartorial elegance, always offset by the unique textural effects of the fabrics. Layered greys and blues in varied shades convey a sense of refinement and elegance.

Fabrics and leathers have been chosen for their lightness

and comfort, while softer fits in tees and knits sit alongside slightly lengthened blazers and loose, fluid trenches for easy-to-wear style.

The quality of the materials and craftsmanship transfers the season's guiding principles to the accessories line, which aims to offer contemporary elegance at the service of a distinctive personality. ✤

QATAR’S MUSICAL AMBASSADOR

Fresh from a triumphant appearance at Cannes International Film Festival and just ahead of her upcoming European tour, FACT caught up with Dana Al Fardan, Qatar’s first female contemporary composer, singer and songwriter to learn about her musical journey.

It’s no surprise that Dana’s interest in music started in childhood when, she says: “I tinkered on the piano constantly and randomly came up with melodies”.

Witnessing a symphony orchestra performance on TV as a 10-year-old “was like pure and utter magic for me”. She couldn’t believe the breadth and depth of sound that came from the musicians.

Later, a trip with her mother to see a musical in London’s West End had a profound effect on the budding musician.

“This method of storytelling, it’s so transcendental, it incorporates everything,” she says.

But, though music was an important part of Dana’s life, it was several years before she decided to pursue it full-time. Instead, she decided to study international relations and later gemmology in line with her family’s business.

She explains: “Taking higher education in international relations not only taught me the art of diplomacy and communication, but I also connected with my roots through classes in Arabic Literature, philosophy and history. The transition was seamless and not as much of an extreme shift in the opposite direction as it may initially appear. My engagement in the jewellery sector of my family’s business was also a great training period. All the skills I picked up helped me develop the capacity to navigate through new challenges and frameworks. I was definitely launched into a whole new ecosystem that I knew nothing about when I one day woke up and decided to become a musician.”

In fact, it was the impending birth of her daughter, Layla, that convinced Dana to follow her passion. She was still working in the family business when she discovered she was expecting and explains: “One day I get pregnant and I find out it’s a girl. I was going to be bringing life into this world and this child was not going to know a very fundamental truth about me. I understood that for me to lead by example, I had to live my most authentic life, I had to be true to myself. I couldn’t imagine cultivating an honest relationship with my daughter if I was denying this huge part of who I was: a musician.”

A career-changing decision was made and in 2012, while heavily pregnant, Dana returned to London to record her first album, Paint, which was released at the end of 2013. Since then, she has performed internationally, released further albums and presented her own sell-out West End show, Broken Wings, a musical adaptation of Khalil Gibran’s poetic novel. And there was a high point this summer when she became the first person from the Gulf to appear at the Cannes International Film Festival.

Of this momentous experience, she said: “I was truly honoured to have the opportunity to be a part of this incredible event. As an artist, it is a once in a lifetime opportunity to have an impact on such a high profile and culturally important platform and, as Cultural Ambassador of the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO), I proudly represented this role, including members of the QPO on a global stage.”

She performed pieces from her 2022 release Indigo which

was conceived during the pandemic lockdown when she spent a great deal of time listening to music and reading, including Goethe’s The Theory of Colour which delves into the physiological effects of colour.

“This helped me to reflect and cultivated a stillness that was once missing in my life – allowing me to identify and reconnect with my inner self,” says the artist. “That was what sparked the idea for my album Indigo. The album seeks to reimagine the meeting points between sound and colour, to reconstruct our human relation to these senses. Each track has its own colour scheme and mood and corresponding videos. The album is very conceptual and abstract, allowing the listener the space to interpret. The live show is a multi-sensory experience with a light show, performed by piano, chamber orchestra and electronics.”

Dana’s music is hard to define with each project being fundamentally different. She describes it as: “Primarily orchestral based, neoclassical and cinematic – that would describe Indigo. and I also write in a style appropriate to musical theatre as well as pop, but all with a cinematic and distinctive tone.”

As well as Cannes, Dana recently appeared at the 77th Estate Fiesolana Summer Festival in Tuscany, along with members of the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, which she describes as “a dream”. And, this month, she will again be the first Gulf artist to appear, introducing her sound to audiences at the Kusadasi Music Festival in Türkiye where Indigo will be performed in collaboration with the CineMoon Ensemble, composed of members of the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra.

Though very much a busy, professional musician, Dana finds time to get involved with social projects in Qatar. As well as being the Cultural Ambassador for the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra she is also an Ambassador for the Qatar Primary School Choir of the Year and supported Nagam 2023, an initiative for the cultural and artists’ movement in Qatar.

And she is active with both the Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) and United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). Explaining her involvement, she says: “I have volunteered with the QRCS and UNRWA for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, to support their joint humanitarian campaign for Gaza under the ‘Hope for Gaza’ campaign, where the partners mobilised resources during the Holy Month of Ramadan to boost the services provided by UNRWA.

“I also composed a song for the campaign, accompanied by a video of my visit to the UNRWA schools in Jordan. I am incredibly honoured to have been part of this important and needed initiative. Spending time in Jordan has shown me the difficulties Palestinians face on a daily basis.”

Asked what’s next in her musical journey, Dana reveals a project that is very close to home and the heart of every Qatari telling us: “I am currently in the studio working on my upcoming album, Tempest

“This album is a demonstration of the interconnectivity

between different cultural influences that arise from the sea, consolidating the universality of the human experience through bringing to life our seafaring stories. Each song will include the fundamental features of the Qatari pearl diving musical tradition that is ‘Fjiri’.

“Why Tempest? Because water constitutes our primary composition, it’s around 70% of what makes up our bodies. So, every journey we take is a navigation through the ‘Tempest’ within.

“This is demonstrated through the many cultural influences

you will hear in this album, from sounds of the Orient, the textures of the Silk Road, to sounds of Nordic tradition. The pearl trade is a central feature of Qatari history, and the history of the Gulf in general. My own family heritage is based on this industry, so it’s a personal thing for me and deeply integrated into my cultural makeup as a composer. I have included that art form in every song, weaving it in to all these culturally different seafaring sounds, proving that at our core, we all speak the same language. And we are all intertwined.” ✤

“BIG SCREEN House of the Dragon X-Men ’97

Need to Know:

House of the Dragon is an American fantasy drama series that’s a prequel to Game of Thrones. The latest season continues the story of the civil war amongst House Targaryen.

Creators: George R. R. Martin, Ryan Condal Cast: Matt Smith, Emma D'Arcy, Rhys Ifans, Olivia Cooke, Tom Glynn-Carney, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Based on parts of George R. R. Martin’s 2018 book Fire & Blood, the series’ events take place around 100 years after the Seven Kingdoms are united by the Targaryen conquest and nearly 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones

Following the death of King Viserys, the rightful heir, his daughter Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) from his first wife, is set to take the throne. But on his deathbed, his second wife, Queen Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke), mishears his final words and chooses to believe the king had a change of heart and instead picked their first-born son to succeed the throne. Her misgivings are further emboldened by her megalomaniac father Ser Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans).

Any hopes of peacefully resolving the decision for the next rightful successor to the throne is thrown out of the window when Queen Rhaenyra’s son is brutally murdered by Queen Alicent’s son and his dragon. The lines are drawn, as various ruling houses are forced to pick sides and prepare to face off in a Targaryen civil war against the newly crowned Aegon II, Rhaenyra's halfbrother. Also, there are over a dozen dragons involved in this war!

The

Need to Know:

X-Men '97 is an American animated series based on the Marvel Comics superhero team called the X-Men. The show is a revival of X-Men: The Animated Series (1992–1997) and continues the story of the X-Men who face new challenges following the loss of their leader, Professor X.

Creator: Beau DeMayo

Cast : Matthew Waterson, George Buza, Cal Dodd, Ray Chase, Lenore Zann, Jennifer Hale, Alison Sealy-Smith, JP Karliak, Holly Chou, Isaac Robinson-Smith

Why Is It Worth Watching?

X-Men ‘97 is the direct continuation of the beloved animated series from the '90s, widely recognised as the spark that eventually set off the explosion of superhero movies from the early 2000s onwards.

In this universe, mutants are people born with superhuman abilities that do their best to coexist alongside humans in a highly hostile world. The X-Men are a team of mutant superheroes brought together by Professor Charles Xavier to protect themselves and humans alike. At the end of the original show, Professor Xavier is killed in an assassination, which leaves the X-Men in disarray.

X-Men ‘97 takes place a year later and sees the team facing new challenges and through unexpected circumstances falling under the leadership of their former adversary, Magneto.

The show continues the action-packed sci-fi madness of the original offering in a brilliantly written new storyline that’s brought to life by the interesting, morally complex and deeply flawed characters that made us all fans of the show decades ago.

Also, many familiar names from the original series reprise their voice acting roles. Nostalgia never looked so good!

ON THE RECORD

PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER, SUSPENSE

Like Mother, Like Daughter

Why Lawd?

Charli XCX has been one of pop music’s leading innovators for over a decade now, and the English singer shows no signs of slowing down on her sixth studio album titled Brat

The album’s pop sound blends influences from her youthful rave music days and her recent ventures into experimental sounds. It interestingly juxtaposes a bold, assertive demeanour against sincerely tender and vulnerable moments.

On the opener, 360, the perfectly pitched synth bass jumpstarts the album with a driving melody that has Charli at her jubilant and braggadocious best.

The intense and vivid energy on the follow up, Club classics, is infectious and the sentiment is further boosted with Charli’s straightforward lyrics and recurrent refrain on the chorus. The piercing synth drum beat on the excellent Sympathy is a knife highlights Charli dealing with feelings of spiralling over an acquaintance who taps her insecurities. On I might say something stupid, she reveals her feelings of uncertainty in the music industry over soft piano chords but returns to her cheeky and bratty best on Von Dutch as she sings, “It’s okay to just admit that you’re jealous of me,” to whomever it may concern.

Under the banner NxWorries the duo, Anderson .Paak and producer Knxwledge, coalesce forces once again for their latest studio album, Why Lawd?, a follow up to their 2016 debut, Yes Lawd! Heartache, regret and hopefulness take centre stage as the overarching theme for the project, since it deals with Anderson’s separation from his wife of 13 years.

The album opens with Dave Chappelle narrating reflective anecdotes on ThankU Which then, ever so smoothly, transitions into one of the best tracks on the album with 86Sentra. Anderson flows confidently but composed over a thumping 90s’ G-funk beat that’s guaranteed to get your head-nodding.

Another tight transition into MoveOn keeps the ball rolling satisfyingly. The inimitable Thundercat guests on KeepHer, while Anderson is clearly in his feels (reminiscent, regretful and quick to pass the blame) on this one and the next track, Distractions. Where I Go (feat H.E.R) is another clear highpoint with both artists offering excellent vocal performances. Anderson shows up pensive, reflective and accepting of his faults.

Regardless, throughout the project Knxwledge keeps conjuring a heady mix of soulful harmonies over laid-back hip-hop beats and old funk samples that provide the perfect backdrop to Anderson’s intimate confessions.

The latest offering from this New York Times bestselling author tells of a daughter’s quest to uncover her mother’s secret life in the wake of her disappearance. When student Cleo arrives late for dinner at her childhood home, she finds food burning in the oven and no sign of her mother, Kat. Then Cleo finds her mum’s bloody shoe under the sofa. Something terrible has happened.

Kat is a corporate lawyer and Cleo soon realises that, prior to her disappearance, her mother had been making some disturbing discoveries.

What We’re (Still) Talking About

Heavenly Plot

There was much amusement in the FACT office when one of our colleagues got a notification about a church in Mexico (or Spain/Portugal depending on which version you read) selling plots of land in heaven at USD100 per square metre – cheap at twice the price if you ask us, especially since the average land price in Manhattan, New York, is several times that. One report even asserted that the pastor claimed to have spoken to God back in 2017 – presumably to confirm his appointment as celestial realtor. Another said the church had raked in millions of dollars!

Incredulity was the order of the day, followed by comments along the lines of “Well, I knew you could gain residency in some countries by buying a passport but…” and “So, now you can literally buy your way into heaven?” Swiftly followed by “Anyone that would fall for that deserves to lose their money.”

Alas, a quick Google search soon revealed that the news came from a satirical Evangelical church that mocks grifting pastors. Shame, we were looking forward to confidently climbing that much vaunted stairway.

That’s Fashion Equally Danish

The vagaries of fashion never cease to amaze. Just this week, colleagues on our sister mag OHLALA were jolly excited about a collaboration between a rather posh handbag brand and the makers of a certain popular sweetie – the result being production of a special pouch to hold said candy which can, of course, be attached to the handbag to show the world how trendy the wearer is.

This news brought to mind a few other gems of fashion nonsense such as the Balenciaga’s literal Trash Bag – made of calfskin leather, retailing at more

than USD2,000 and looking exactly like its namesake. (And don’t get us started on the brand’s IKEA-alike tote or the jeans so filthy they look like they could walk the runway sans model.)

We kind of like our fashion colleague’s posited explanation that many of these ideas come about as the result of well-served designer dinners at which someone comes up with a bonkers idea, someone else takes it seriously and, before you know it, fashionistas are wearing tea cosies.

We love the story that came out of Denmark this month about the men’s national football team declining a pay rise in order for their female counterparts to receive equal basic pay.

It seems the Danish national football association had been looking for a way to level the playing field (pun totally intended) for quite some time but neither squad wanted to see money taken from the boys to pay the girls.

So, in a move, that’s gained both the teams and Danish football as a whole, much international kudos, when it came time to renegotiate their contracts, the

men’s national team literally took one for the (wider) team and didn’t ask for more cash – thus enabling their female counterparts to benefit. While the move has been widely praised, there are always those who decry women in football generally and assert that female teams should not be paid equally since they don’t bring in equal revenue. When you look at the English Lionesses’ triumphs compared to the current troubles being faced by the England men at the Euros, you have to wonder which game these naysayers have been watching.
