Seek Moments

Travel makes one modest, you see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.” - Gustave Flaubert

I

t’s no secret at all that this is my favourite issue of the year. Just speak the word “travel” around me and I’ll happily sit with you for hours to talk about why taking off to see the world is high up on my list of priorities. And it seems that travel is also of huge importance to the people of the Gulf. Be it the local or expat community, the chances are that some of your best conversations in Doha have revolved around a mutual love of travelling. There’s just something beautifully liberating about being plucked out of your everyday comfort zone and landing in a completely foreign place to see how different cultures live. With undiscovered destinations now opening up for tourism, we’ve rounded up some of the world’s best destinations that are seeing a travel revival and others that are newbies on the bucket list. Turn to p39 for #Hashtag# Travel Inspo and start your adventure today - be it solo, with family or a group of friends - there’s plenty of leisure, food, activities, beaches and more waiting! Of course, there’s just as much intrepid inspiration to awaken the travel bug as there is luxury vacays that blend the best of both worlds, seamlessly. If it’s this perfect balance of exploration and relaxation that you’re looking for, take note of our Eid Escapes (p52) where everything from island living to UNESCO sites and safari vibes can make for the perfect getaway during the Eid Al Fitr break. June is also the start of the most-anticipated sporting event of the year - the 2018 FIFA World Cup - and you can believe that Doha’s venues are going all out to make sure that you catch all the action live from Russia on the biggest screens, accompanied with the best food and beverages. Turn to World Cup Watch on p39 where we round up some of the social spots to get your footie fix. We’ve got your monthly dose of fashion, tech, dining and all the need-to-know events, openings and foodie deals for the next 30 days. Whilst planning my own summer abroad, I was constantly reminded that the freedom to hop on a plane and venture to somewhere new is a privilege that many people around the world still don’t have. So, let’s be cultural ambassadors and share travel stories as often as possible! As the meme says: catch flights, not feelings - and I’m all about that life. Happy wanderlusting!☺

During our visit to KidzMondo, the kids were involved in a variety of activities that KidzMondo has to offer. To start off our adventure, they began by exchanging their cheques at the QIIB bank, these cheques were given at the entrance when buying our tickets, and this would help them participate in any activity they wanted without worrying about not having enough money. First up was the nurse activity in the hospital where they had a detailed look into the human body and organs, their functions and how a nurse is helpful in a hospital. After this activity they wanted to try riding the go carts at the race competition, they later found out that much like in the real world they needed both a driving license and insurance before being able to participate. I think that this is a valuable lesson for children, as it is not only realistic but teaches them to make smarter choices in the future, for the sake of their health and safety. Unlike the real world, KidzMondo makes even the serious tasks fun and interactive for children, for example when getting your driving license, you have to play an arcade game which simulated driving, including red lights, stop signs, a steering wheel, and even pedals, making this experience not only incredibly entertaining but insightful for future drivers. After all the racing we were starting to get hungry, so we headed to the pizza restaurant located inside the park, even this was an interactive experience, and a personal favourite. In this establishment you are able to make your own pizza from scratch, preparing the dough and choosing your favourite toppings to create a delicious masterpiece which then supervisors would help put in an oven and finally hand it to you in its very own mini pizza box. After this we decided to get some desert, as luck would have it right in front of the pizzeria was the ice cream shop where children of all ages can create their very own ice cream rolls, choosing both the flavour and the toppings. In this activity, my younger daughters seemed to enjoy it the most as they love ice cream, and making it yourself 34

gives it a special (and delicious) touch. To finalise our wonderful stay at KidzMondo, we decided to go to the iconic Qatar Airways airport activity, where the young ones get their very own flight attendant and pilot costumes, and learn how to fly an aircraft and work as a flight attendant on a plane.

Overall, we had a great experience at KidzMondo, it is a creative way to teach children about their future careers, the daily tasks they will do and smart choices that they will have to make when they become adults. The interactive games and fun simulation make KidzMondo an unforgettable day out that will help children by letting them decide what they want to do, how they want to spend their money and where they want to go in this kid-size city. Much like a real city, KidzMondo does not forget to keep a balanced mix of both mundane and common tasks like making a trip to the supermarket or bank while including leisure activities such as the karaoke or a fashion show. KidzMondo will teach and entertain children of all ages, because the wonderful thing about this city is that there is something for absolutely everyone, their dream job, or favourite hobby. I can only describe it as a haven for the children and plenty of fun for the big kids too (a.k.a mum and dad!). ✤

RADIO REVELRY A couple of months ago, we brought you an exclusive interview with the gentlemen behind Qatar’s first Indian-language Radio stations and now we recap all the reasons why you should be tuning into 106.3 FM Radio Olive… REASONS TO LOVE RADIO OLIVE: - PIONEERS First and foremost, what is Radio Olive and Suno FM? The first is a Hindi FM station and the latter is broadcast in Malayalam. However, what makes them above average is the fact that both have created a milestone in the history of Qatar by being the first private Indian-language stations to be aired in and from the country.

- CREATIVE SPACE Never have we walked into an office and felt such a buzz of creativity! The walls are adorned in pop-art style motivational quotes, retro Bollywood memorabilia and cool, colourful art that reflects the vibrant and diverse culture of India. The meeting room that boasts a detailed timeline of the radio – all the way from Tesla to the era of the Great Depression and through to the Digital Age of Internet Radio – we’re inspired!

- LISTENER REACH Seeing that Qatar presented a big opportunity to conquer a new, exciting and growing market, both Radio Olive and Suno FM cater to a huge vacuum of the Indian community; 1.6million listeners to be precise. This accounts for around 68 to 73 per cent of the population - a large proportion of Qatar’s residents.

- INFOTAINMENT The beauty of Radio Olive and Suno FM is that neither touches on any religious or political matters. Instead, what they concentrate on is the concept of infotainment. With everything from safety reminders on wearing your seatbelt when driving, to not speeding or talking on the phone, and details about what’s happening in Qatar and where and when to get involved in activities and events.

- OPPORTUNITIES - FORWARD-THINKING One of the team’s biggest signs of acceptance came when they signed a deal with Ooredoo to become the first radio station in the Gulf that is now available for streaming on the TV. They also have a mobile app for those who want to listen on-the-go. By tapping into all mediums, Radio Olive and Suno FM make sure that there is a continuity for listeners – from the car, to work, at home and even when they travel. 36

fact magazine

The two radio stations not only give listeners a chance to engage and communicate with the RJs, through partnerships with local supporters and large organisations, the Radio Olive team is able to provide listeners with once-in-a-lifetime opportunities; for example, the recent Fly with the RJs to Turkey campaign which saw them team up with some airlines to give 65 to 70 people the chance to spend five days in Turkey with the RJs. inclusive of house beverages. ✤

othing quite prepares you for your first time in the Maldives. No matter how many times we had Google searched Niyama Private Islands, coming faceto-face with the resort’s sandy shores hugged by clear blue waters was a sight that far exceeded all of our real life expectations. We’re greeted by Niyama staff at Male airport and taken for light refreshments at the property’s arrivals lounge. It’s packed with delicious snacks and drinks, a large, cosy seating area and showers for those who may have come off a long flight and need a relaxing rinse. The best bit? You look right onto the docking area for the seaplanes – and soon, we’re hopping onto one for our 45-minute journey to the picture-perfect Niyama Private Islands. We’re talking popcorn machine – YES – a full-sized fridge housing homemade ice cream – DOUBLE YES – and a fabulous selection of hot and cold beverages as well as snacks like our favourite, cassava chips – SO MUCH YES! It’s, hands down, the best mini bar of any hotel we’ve ever stayed in. To top this off, alongside your standard amenities like cosy slippers and bath robes, you’re given mosquito repellent, extra adapters, a night light and more to make sure that every single one of your needs is met during the stay. It’s this attention to detail and pleasant surprises that further elevated our stay at Niyama. SPA GOALS There are spas and then there’s Drift Spa, a labyrinth of tranquil walkways and greenery that winds all the way to the beach where six over water treatment rooms with lagoon views stand beautifully. There are two further treatment sanctuaries with private gardens, outdoor bath, rain shower and daybed as well as a relaxation area with lime tree garden, sauna, steam baths, plunge pools, Jacuzzis and Vitality juice bar. As far as world-class spas go, this place offers rituals from around the globe and bespoke therapies with products by Anne Semonin, Intraceuticals, Aromatherapy Associates and Margaret Dabbs. A Signature Niyama Massage is just what we need to take our holiday mood to all new levels of serene. A blissful coconut oil soothes our tired muscles, helping us fall into a deep slumber. Afterwards, we’re reenergised with hot ginger tea, completely refreshed and ready to do some more exploring! fact magazine

DINING FOR DAYS Just because you’re in the Maldives, at a 5-star resort in one of the most secluded spots in the Indian Ocean, doesn’t mean that the gastronomy is slacking. It’s very much the opposite at Niyama, where the food game is, literally, STRONG. World cuisines are represented through the resort’s nine dining outlets, and as true food connoisseurs, we can testify to the amazing dishes being plated up at each venue. EDGE Honeymooners, families who want a treat and anyone with a taste for the finer things in life, Edge is going to be THE place for you (and your Snapchat!). Whisked five minutes away by speedboat and you’ll arrive at the exclusive overwater restaurant, Edge. Focusing on fresh local seafood, including only local Maldivian reef fish, prepare your palates for a culinary tour. Not only are dishes intricately presented, the combination of ingredients is sophisticated and high-quality fine dining at its best. During our visit, a set degustation menu reveals distinct tastes to choose from. The creamy Asparagus Soup and the top-notch Fresh Tortellini, Crusted Scallops are taste-bud-stealers at the table. We can’t get enough! TRIBAL Our absolute favourite food experience at Niyama had to be the venue that whipped up the most exotic flavours and unusual dishes. A menu of African, Central and South American cuisines amidst blazing fires is what you’ll find here. A genuine feeling of being in the Masai takes over when you enter the venue. Our waiter, Lucas, is an absolute joy. He explains the dishes that we enquire about and makes some good recommendations. Try more unusual concoctions like Warm Ostrich Bobotie with a heavenly nectar of peach chutney, sweet peri peri sauce, and tomatillo confit or the Ox Tongue Berbere; spicy tender ox tongue, berbere sauce, cucumber, anchovy relish, parsley, micro herbs, pickled onion. Our highlights were the Shrimp and Sweet Lobster Ceviche – super fresh, the Jerked Jumbo Prawns, with sugarcane, tortilla, pimento, habanero, lime, and hibiscus, and the Brahman Beef, which is braised beef cheek, sweet potatoes, heirloom carrots, and fermented dosa – deliciously tender. Venezuelan Moist Chocolate Cake with ginger, honey, caramelised banana, lemon, lime and alfajores sorbet, is the star of the desserts and a sweet ending to a memorable meal. NEST As far as dining experiences go, this place takes the prize for most beautiful and intriguing design. Climb up the stairs and into the tree house that is Nest, to navigate the jungle on a walkway of wooden paths amongst the treetops. Avant-garde presentations by Thai, Chinese, Japanese and Indonesian chefs will grace your table in what we truly believe is one of the most spectacular restaurants in the Maldives, or dare we say, the world. Our Asian feast began with gorgeous sushi and sashimi alongside Lobster Spring Roll and Chicken Flower Dumplings. The Som Tam Poo Nim - green papaya salad, carrot caviar, chilli, peanut, dried shrimp, and tamarind sauce is everything that we wanted it to be. Light, fresh and packed with all the goodness of carefully-selected ingredients. 60

Massaman Nua is slow-cooked beef cheeks, potato, shallots, and roasted peanuts, in a mouthwatering curry. We haven’t tasted meat as tender as this in a long time – highly recommended. For a theatrical meal, the teppanyaki table is a must-visit spot at lunch time – watch the chef play with fire as your choice of meat, seafood and veggies are grilled to perfection. Whenever you visit Nest, make sure to order the roasted banana ice cream – we’ve never tasted anything like it. So yummy! EPICURE If you live for hotel breakfasts, you’d better believe that Niyama knows how to do a good, delectable spread. Flaky pastries, tantalising egg dishes, a cereal bar, fresh fruit counter, healthy juices and SO much more open the morning to a simply divine start. You can follow with fruit salads made to order from the familiar to the tropical, or an omelette embracing fine cheese and a chiffonade of garden-fresh herbs. The coffee is freshly brewed whilst the juices provide a muchneeded a.m. boost. The restaurant overlooks the hotel’s pool and powdery beach, right onto the crystal waters of the Indian Ocean. From the extensive breakfast buffet to a la carte lunches and dinners, Epicure is infinity poolside indulgence at its best. SUBSIX A complete underwater playground, Subsix will take your breath away. Six metres below the water, you’ll witness everything from Parrotfish swim past shoals of Moorish Idols, Moray eels slide through the lagoon, Groupers make goliath appearances amidst the rainbow of butterflyfish and damselfish, while the resident Hawksbill turtle glides in for rare visit. Walk down a three-tier staircase to find a restaurant designed to make you feel like you’re in the ocean. Chandeliers hang to give the illusion of shining coral whilst mixologists concoct all kinds of liquid creations at the clam-inspired bar. Take a seat on the soft anemone chairs and tuck into a champagne breakfast, a subaquatic lunch, or a gourmet dinner followed by the popular glow party illuminating the night alongside the theatre of the reef. fact magazine

NATURE’S PLAYGROUND It’s clear why Niyama’s motto is: Welcome to Nature’s Playground. The resort is has a plethora of activities on both land and sea, and for all ages – enough to keep even the fussiest of travellers entertained. Here are just some of the best excursions and pastimes that we’d recommend: - SNORKELLING WITH TURTLES What lies beneath the surface? Go deeper into the mysteries and secrets with the Marine Biologist as your personal guide. Immerse yourself in the house reef and speedboat to spectacular sites. On our morning ride out to sea, our instructor and the boat’s captain go over safety procedures and reassure us that this is going to be one of the most amazing experiences of our lives. Little did we know how true this was until hopping over the edge of the boat and starting our soothing snorkel session. We spot intricate bouquets of coral and groups of colourful fish as well as the stars of the underwater world here; the elegant Hawksbill turtle who glide effortlessly just beneath us. If you’ve got a waterproof camera, TAKE IT WITH YOU! - ADOPT A CORAL You would think that being in the Maldives means miles and miles of sea that’s home to the most striking coral – think again. Thanks to Niyama’s coral regeneration programme, life under the ocean is kept alive and well cared for – and you’re encouraged to be a part of it. Snorkel to the coral nursery and select your ‘baby’. Give your chosen little coral a name and help cultivate it. Together, you lend a hand in maintaining the rich but fragile ecosystem for which the Maldives is so famous. Receive a certificate and follow up images to watch your adoptee grow and thrive. It’s a forever souvenir! - SUNSET CRUISE Possibly one of the best excursions we embarked on at Niyama. Whether you go for a Dream Dhoni (an exotic curved sailing vessel) or a sophisticated yacht, get ready for an unforgettable evening. Bubbly and canapés accompany the trip alongside friendly and expert staff who will keep an eye out for the dolphins at sea. You’ll sail the blue waters and pass small deserted islands all while watching the dramatic sunset and how the Maldives does day to night – it’s a spectacular view that you’ll surely want to capture on camera. - WATER SPORTS Now, when we say that Niyama is a haven for on-water activities, we’re not exaggerating. You name it and they’ve got it! The resort’s FLOAT programme has an adrenaline-surged array of water sports: jet skiing, water skiing, mono-skiing, wakeboarding, knee boarding, catamarans, windsurfing, kitesurfing, parasailing, fun tubes and so much more. Surfers can catch the most glorious waves whilst those who want to take things a little slow can hop in a glass kayak or get their adrenalin going with the 20km/ph underwater rocket. The choice is yours! ✤ 62

S

et 25 minutes from the Qatari mainland, Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara, is the ultimate destination to fulfill all of your getaway needs. The experience begins as soon as you enter the resort offices at the port. Kind smiles and welcoming faces assist with the ticketing and room allocation, as well as loading your luggage into a safe hold on the luxury catamaran. The journey begins with a safety demo and introduction by the vessel’s captain before setting off for a gentle crossing across the cool, crystal clear waters of the Gulf. After using the free onboard WiFi to snap some photos of the Doha skyline for Instagram, our destination is upon us. We were welcomed to the island by a band of drummers, greeting us to their resort with an uplifting beat. What a welcome! A member of the friendly team confirmed our room number and gave us an island tour before taking us to our room. The golf carts are accessible, smart and smooth way of visiting the many different activities and experiences that the resort has to offer. Upon entering our room, one of 141 rooms, suites, pool villas and over water villas, we fell in love with the true Arabian luxury that was at our fingertips for the next few days. The bathroom was huge and contained a rather, enticing egg shaped bath. I myself, adore a nice relaxing bath and I was giddy with excitement at the thought of trying this one out. The bed was incredibly comfortable and allowed us an amazing night’s sleep. Our favourite feature of the room however, was the balcony. It overlooked the 800m private beach and allowed us to watch the sunset over the waters in the distance, a truly beautiful sight, yet another one for the ‘Insta-lovers’. Banana Island has many different culinary treats to choose from at its multiple restaurants. Whether it’s Arabic, Italian or an American burger you are after, the resort offers it all. We decided to go for a traditional Arabic meal at Al Nahham, now this is a beautiful restaurant. Sitting outside overlooking the capital, we enjoyed a traditional mezze before delving into a succulent and truly satisfying mixed grill. Washed down with mocktails and curtailed with shisha, this was an experience that we wouldn’t forget in a hurry. 66

Breakfast at Azraq was a thing of splendour. Multiple cooking stations offer a little bit of something for everyone, no matter whereabouts in the world you are from. The ABC health juice was a particular favourite and the perfect tonic for a day of mini golf and water sport activities, all available on the island. The Anantara spa was a magnificent, relaxing experience which is a must do for when you visit. After an extensive day of fun and pampering we decided to enjoy an Italian meal at Riva before we departed the island. Mamma Mia! The food was out of this world, one of the best Italian meals we had enjoyed in a long, long time. The perfect end to a perfect getaway. ✤

By Chvrches

Coming at us with a whole lot of energy and an unmatched intensity, Chvrches’ newest album is here to shake things up! In their third full-length effort, the Glasgow trio gets real about the world we live in and they have a lot to say. An album about growing up and coming to terms with the great as well as awful things in the world, Love Is Dead takes you on an unfiltered musical journey. Catchy pop and a typically powerful performance from primary vocalist Lauren Mayberry, Get Out sticks to what Chvrches know best. While the song fails to push any boundaries that the band hasn’t pushed before, it’s definitely one for the weekend party playlist. Featuring the most pop they’ve ever produced and a collabo with Grammy award-winning producer Greg Kurstin, the band is definitely treading uncharted territory. Commencing with an enigmatic intro, My Enemy makes perfect use of space and contrast, both vocally and instrumentally. The youthful and vibrant collaboration of Chvrches and Matt Berninger is bound to tickle every listener’s fancy. Taking risks and producing brand new sounds, the band has come a long way since their huge first studio album. This is a pleasant listen!

By Lily Allen

Featuring confessional pop on her own terms, Allen’s latest release is a far cry from her spiky first two albums. With contemporary, minimal dancepop that references Drake, Jamie xx and dancehall, she covers everything from the breakdown of her marriage, her depression as well as fears about her children. Offering a dark, real look at British party culture, Trigger Bang is a weird mix of nostalgia, liberation and exhaustion. Also featuring London rapper Giggs, the languid, worldweary pop song is going to give you all the feels! Away from her trademark wordplay, the album features a whole lot of introspective new lyrics and a refreshing new sound. Laying down her grievances in plain, heartfelt language, Higher sees Allen condemning a tainted relationship. Featuring stunning verses and heavenly vocals, the track is our new favourite heartbreak anthem! While fans had to be patient for her big comeback, Allen has definitely delivered with her fourth studio album.

Filled with a number of relatable but eccentric misadventures, Sloane Crosley’s brand-new collection of essays is exactly what you need to read after a long day at work. Featuring her trademark hilarity, wit and charm, Look Alive Out There talks about everything from scaling active volcanoes and befriending strangers to staring down the barrel of the fertility gun and playing herself on Gossip Girl.

• EXCLUSIVE Q&A

INSPIRING IDAM FACT’s Marisela Paesano caught up with the world-famous gastronome, Alain Ducasse and Executive Chef, Damien Leroux, on the occasion of the 5th anniversary of the stunning restaurant, IDAM, at the Museum of Islamic Art…

How does it feel to celebrate such a monumental anniversary with IDAM in such an iconic venue? AD: We are very happy, however this anniversary is only a step forward (in progress). As for now, we are totally integrated in this local environment and I think we fulfilled our first mission which is to mix two cultures (Qatari and French) through gastronomy. Although this five-year anniversary is a milestone, there is still room for improvement. What has been the key to success with IDAM? AD: It might be a success, but it is only a step forward in progress. Today we are celebrating but It cannot be taken for granted as our business must be constantly evolving - every two years we are changing the chef in order to bring a new vision and it helps us to improve ourselves. DL: I’m working for Alain since 14 years and in every restaurant we are always brainstorming and we take into account the local tastes but without straying from the French cuisine techniques. And the success for us is to have a full restaurant - this is our every day target. Can you tell us about one of your signatures dishes that meets the favour of the public? DL: Of course, we have some signature dishes that became part of the restaurant’s DNA. For example Chef Romain Meder who opened IDAM created the camel Rossini — the camel meat is braised for six days and served with foie gras, soufflé potatoes and truffle — it’s one of the standout dishes at IDAM and a perfect illustration of the mix between local flavours and French technique. With so much already achieved, what drives you to your next endeavour? AD: I’m curious by nature and I’m still passionate about what I don’t know, about what’s coming up, and about what is not expected. I’m still learning today through my curiosity that 84

allows me to capture sources of inspiration from meeting new people, experiencing new tastes or places every day, and transforming them into something of my own. So I don’t have time to be bored. Two of the keywords in your kitchen are: seasonal produce. What are the best ingredients you would recommend to cook with during the summer? AD: As for France, if I’m in the south east of France I would clearly recommend olive oil with tomatoes. Especially if you have a garden near the sea and if you have a nice variety of tomatoes where it will benefit from the Mediterranean Sea breeze. DL: Qatar is currently supporting local farms and local products, and this is something we are supporting too. Nowadays you can find some amazing eggplants, organic tomatoes and zucchini and with this combination of these three ingredients, you can simply cook them in the oven. Let’s put it this way, if you have the right products at the right time with the right seasoning – you can’t be wrong. What do you do to stay up-to-date with new food trends? AD: First, you don’t follow the trends but create them. Nowadays there is a big interest from the media about our industry and this is fantastic. We are always in the spotlight and that helps this industry to evolve quicker. What is the biggest lesson you have learned along the way about life and food? AD: The first lesson is you should remain curious and in action so you remain competitive and always fulfil projects with a personal touch – assume the legacy of your actions. You have to be 100 per cent confident in your decision and when you have decided never question it again even if you are wrong – don’t be afraid to be wrong. Of course, there is always doubt but you should always go beyond it in order to move forward. What are your tips for aspiring young chefs?

EXCLUSIVE Q&A •

AD: The first thing is to be passionate, and to always push the boundaries, constantly move forward with passion and never look back. You should avoid routine and habits cause it is never the good habits that prevails but the bad ones. If you are not passionate about culinary cooking choose something else! ✤

MADE IN SHANGHAI

There are few venues that can still take our breath away – with their food, the location, and the décor – it’s tough now more than ever to tick all the boxes. FACT’s Craig Ferriman revisited Shanghai Club at the Shangri-La Hotel Doha to prove that this is one venue to constantly stay ten steps ahead of its competitors… fact magazine

oha’s dining scene just gets bigger and better. With a busier market comes greater competition and standing out just gets harder. Everybody has to up their game or they could quickly drop out of the race. The Shangri-La Hotel Doha’s sky-high Shanghai Club knows this all too well. Hot on the heels of winning two prestigious gongs at the 2018 FACT Dining Awards for Best Chinese and Favourite Brunch, the restaurant has just launched a new and improved menu. They’ve retained the best bits of the existing one and added a few new signatures too – and we were happy to oblige for a tasting! Those who know Shanghai Club will be thrilled to read that the classics like the Peking Duck, the signature Duck Handbags and the Fortune Chicken are still on offer and they remain highly popular with diners. I really enjoy the Fortune Chicken because it really gets the table talking. Why? Well, it’s basically chicken that has been cooked for 24 hours inside what I can best describe as a giant loaf of bread. You kind of have to see it to believe it! When presented to the table, it’s wheeled out on a trolley and a member of the table is invited to bash the bread which is rock hard. Amusement abounds as the nominated bread basher doesn’t smash it hard enough but eventually it’s cracked open and the chicken underneath can breathe and be served to all. This interactive element already adds bonus points to Shanghai Club’s offerings. The hand pulled noodles are new. They’re served either with tomato and egg sauce or with Sichuan braised beef. I can put my best tux on it that this is the most memorable new addition to the menu; excellent meat that tastes succulent sitting in a light sauce with the fresh noodles. How elegantly delicious? The Cha Siu Bao is a popular Cantonese offering. The Shanghai Club’s recipe makes them with chicken and the dumplings just melt in the mouth. You have to be careful not to make a mess as soy based thick gravy oozes out as you bite into it – we LOVE it! Also new is the Matuan dessert which traditionally symbolises the family get-together around the table enjoying a meal. Matuan are yummy sesame balls with red beans. Traditional and mouthwatering in one. 88

Old favourites are still great like the Chinese Sashimi Salad mixed with all kinds of fresh goodness that the staff mix up in front of diners until it looks like a work of art. The Kung Pao Chicken with Sichuan peppers, cashew nuts and chilli sauce remains a firm favourite of mine. I still think that nothing beats the Peking Duck which is cooked for two days with five spices before drying and roasting. It pulls apart like a concertina and there are days when we go through spells of cravings for it! I love the design and ambience of the Shanghai Club. You could, for a moment, think that you’re in Shanghai or Hong Kong as the restaurant sits on the 42nd floor of the hotel, ensconced in West Bay’s skyscraper cyclorama. From the massive bas-relief dragon on the wall to the colour changing chandeliers, there are Chinese details and imprints everywhere. It’s an all-round exquisite experience. ✤

FOOTBALL CRAZY!

Transforming into the Cup Headquarters for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Champions Sports Bar at Marriott Marquis City Centre Doha will be one of the most buzzing hubs for football fans and avid supporters to gather on match days. I

t only falls every four years but when it does, you can’t avoid it. The 2018 FIFA World Cup is almost upon us and you don’t have to be in Russia to get your fill of the action. Doha is making this a tournament that can be enjoyed by everyone. A truly social occasion. There’s no need to check your TV package or try to sneak round to a friend’s place to catch the matches you want to see. Our beloved Qatari capital has it covered and the place that claims to have more of it than anywhere else is Champions - the sports bar at the Marriott Marquis City Centre Doha. Champions boasts 47 LCD TVs and two giant screens which will show all matches across the month for an unforgettable summer of football. To make it extra special, Champions have gone to great lengths to make every aspect memorable. The chef has redesigned the menu for a more celebratory crowd to enjoy during the World Cup. In addition to that, they are offering themed food every day. The bar snacks will correspond to the countries that are playing on any given day – pretty cool, right? For example on June 27, South Korea take on Germany in their group stage match. While watching the game on the big screen, Chef Nicholas will be serving affordably priced themed food from both competing nations. You can expect delicious kimbap rolls from South Korea and representing Germany, you can look forward to tucking into juicy meatballs called frikadellen. Sounds yummy! Argentina is playing its opening game on June 16. You’ll have to get down that day because they’ll be serving pinchos con carne and chimichurri sauce. It’s so delicious, it’s addictive. Somewhat hoping Argentina progress to the quarter finals if that dish is anything to go by! Costa Rica commence their battle for the trophy the next day and you can watch their progress while tucking into the yucks with pick de gallo. We were told that this is a twist on a traditional

and popular Costa Rican snack. Egypt starts their campaign on June 19 and so you can anticipate traditional goulash. The slightly odd one for me is the Australian offering which is crispy calamari. I thought that would be synonomous with Greece but after some research, Champions discovered that it is rather a popular bar snack down under. There are culinary treats a-plenty this World Cup and more than enough screens to make sure you’re getting a fantastic view of all the on-pitch action. Miss it and you’ll have to wait four years for the next World Cup. Where is that being held again? ✤

T

he Four Seasons Doha exudes classic luxury blended with organic elements like marble and hardwood. The grand lobby glistens with original marble floors, high ceilings and windows overlooking the Arabian Gulf with mid-century elegant furnishings. From the moment you arrive at Four Seasons Doha, you’ll feel totally relaxed and utterly indulged. Whether you’re there for a spa day or a weekend staycation, you’ll be escaping the dayto-day and entering the ultimate haven of calm and tranquility. I started a day of leisure with a yoga class held in the studio room. The Vinyasa Class begins with slow movements moving forward to more vigorous poses. The yoga class proved the perfect wake up session as it strengthened my muscles, improved my flexibility and posture and increased my blood flow. Yoga encourages you to relax, slow your breath, and focus on the present. A perfect way to start this wellness day. The hotel has five outdoor swimming pools right at the edge of the beach, so I decided on relaxing by the pools after my yoga session. Three grotto-style pools are elevated on different levels, giving you a view of the sea. The unique layout and lush landscaping create distinct and hidden areas where you can unwind on comfortable lounge chairs with umbrellas for shade. The immaculately designed space lends itself to lazing around, enjoying a good book and cooling off from the heat. As I lay under the sun, I felt wonderfully detached form the city bustle undoubtedly going on beyond the hotel walls. This was much needed, quality ME TIME. Just a little something that every single one of us deserves now and again - and Four Seasons Doha is happy to accommodate. After morning yoga and a stint in the sun, I’d worked up

an appetite and where better to get some lunch than the beachfront Pool Grill restaurant. Under the shade of a wooden trellis, this rustic outdoor café offers a cool vibe, amazing views and delicious food. For starters I enjoyed a fresh and fabulous Watermelon Greek Salad and for mains I tried the Josper Grilled Hammour. The fish was prepared in a Josper oven, combining the juiciness of roasting with charcoal-grilled flavour. My meal was just perfect; goregous local ingredients cooked to perfection. It was now time for me to discover the healing benefits of water in the hotel’s large-scale hydrotherapy facility, located on the ground level of the three-storey Spa and Wellness Centre. The aqua facilities are superb - perfect to cool off after your tanning session or to relax your muscles after an energetic workout. I enjoyed the giant hydrotherapy pool, with over a dozen separate areas to massage different parts of the body with underwater jets and overhead fountains. Then I massaged my feet by walking circles on the beach stones in the reflexology pool followed by warming up with dry heat in the laconium room and laying back on one of the heated laconium beds. You might also choose to unwind in the innovative colour therapy room. They’ve really thought of everything! I lingered around the wet area for one hour in the lead up to my chosen spa therapy: a Mindful Treatment. The spa treatment rooms are beautifully designed and very private, they even have showers inside the rooms and the staff are the most friendly, professional people. My journey begins with a fully body scrub to exfoliate my skin using a mix of mineral salt and essential oils, applied from the neck down to gently buff and smooth my skin, helping to remove toxins and increase blood circulation, creating a natural radiance. Mineral salts are good for brightening and smoothing the skin and improving the skin tone. After the 30-minute scrub, I took a shower to remove the scrub. The treatment finishes with a 60-minute, full-body, oil-based massage of medium pressure to release all stress and tension from my muscles. This treatment definitely helps my body to unwind deeply. Afterwards, I felt completely relaxed and revitalised! ✤

• HOSPITALITY SPOTLIGHT

Tivoli Celebrates In 2018, Tivoli Hotels & Resorts is celebrating 85 years of history, a time to contemplate more than eight decades of incredible stories, and also a time to design an ambitious future for the expansion of the brand. TIVOLI WAS BORN IN 1933 with the hotel Tivoli Avenida Liberdade in the heart of Lisbon, and since then the brand’s portfolio has added iconic hotels which have made, and continue to make, history in hospitality in Portugal, Brazil and most recently, in Qatar. Since the very beginning, the Tivoli spirit and philosophy has led to lifelong relationships with guests and destinations in hotels which are icons in themselves. For this reason, Tivoli hotels are sought out not only by locals but by international travellers as well, who know that they’ll find a refined setting with a lively and multicultural atmosphere. In 1955 Tivoli Palácio de Seteais opened, an XVIII century palace in the historic town of Sintra, and at the turn of the century, in 1999, the brand added its first resorts in the main tourist destinations of the Algarve, in Vilamoura - with the perfectly located Tivoli Marina Vilamoura – and also in Carvoeiro, Portimão and Lagos. In 2006, Tivoli Hotels & Resorts launched outside Portugal by acquiring its first property in Brazil: the Tivoli Ecoresort Praia do Forte, in Salvador da Bahia, followed by the Tivoli Mofarrej São Paulo, in February 2009. Tivoli became part of Minor Hotels in early 2016, inaugurating a new chapter in the brand’s history, with the renovation of the entire portfolio of hotels and the expansion, for the first time, to the Middle 98

East, with the first hotel in the historic centre of Doha, in Qatar - Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels by Tivoli. The inauguration of two new hotels in Qatar is also planned for this year – Souq Al Wakra Hotel Qatar by Tivoli and the Al Najada Doha Hotel by Tivoli. Proud of its past, this charismatic brand, which took its first steps in the Portuguese capital, is now looking to expand in South America, especially in Brazil, with new properties to be announced soon and also has plans for Asia in countries such as Thailand, South Korea and China. New destinations where Tivoli hopes to fulfil its role as a brand – to be a local benchmark, with sophisticated wining and dining options and recognised by the local community for their cosmopolitan atmosphere and lifestyle approach. Tivoli’s doors remain open to welcome all those looking for genuine hospitality in Portugal, Brazil, Qatar and, very soon, in new and exciting destinations around the world. ✤
