Heesen YacHts’ Project alida sold

HEESEN YACHTS announced the sale of YN 17755 (aka Project Alida). The client, an experienced boater, was introduced to the shipyard by Barin Cardenas of The New Yachts Company, a boutique firm dedicated to new construction, based in Fort Lauderdale, who worked closely with Thom Conboy of Heesen Yachts USA. Project Alida is a 55m Fast Displacement, steel-hulled motoryacht that combines efficiency, performance and elegance in a design package of 740GT.

Omega Architects created an exterior design that emphasises the indoor-outdoor connection thanks to glass insertions in the bulwarks and the floor-to-ceiling windows in the sky lounge. Vertical windows on the main deck, together with an original “shark tooth” design detail on the overhang of the wheelhouse, provide Project Alida with a bold and distinctive character. The clean and muscular exterior lines without fashion plates and structural support have been cleverly engineered and perfectly executed by Heesen in-house experts, so nothing comes between the guests and the breathtaking views.

IN LINE wITH GROwTH of the global cruise industry, Royal Caribbean International has announced the name of its newest ship, Symphony of the Seas, the fourth in the Oasis Class and the 25th ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet. Symphony of the Seas will be delivered in April 2018 and spend her inaugural summer season exploring the aweinspiring destinations of the Mediterranean calling on ports in Barcelona, and Palma de Mallorca, Spain; Provence, France; Florence/Pisa, Rome and Naples, Italy. Symphony of the Seas will claim the title of the world’s largest – and most adventure filled - cruise ship, offering a total of 18 decks and 24 guest elevators, the ship will be able to carry 6,780 passengers and 2,175 international crew.

Dark or pale streaked oak embellished with numerous dark grey lacquered details creates a refined atmosphere in the main lounge: a large, pleasant open space where guests can take it easy, surrounded by enchanting Poltrona Frau furnishings and leather. The items of furniture include a sizeable Quadra sofa and a Laurana wooden table with a glass top. Poltrona Frau is one of Pershing’s long-standing partners and it has also upholstered the large helm station and the three ergonomic, sporty seats for the captain and the co-pilots.

The interior design scheme reaches its artistic and creative zenith below deck. At the bottom of the steps is an area providing access to the four cabins. The corridor is decorated with alternating mirrored bulkheads and full-length panelling with metallic patterned Èlitis wallpaper. A strip of LED lighting on the floor emphasises the wall profile and boosts the sense of depth in the surroundings.

The same stylistic effect appears in the master suite, on both the forward and stern bulkheads. Two burnished mirrors make the cabin feel even bigger. In addition to the master and VIP suites, both equipped with en-suite bathrooms, the main area features two guest cabins with a shared bathroom. Taking pride of place in the heads are Bisazza mosaics, Pomd’or accessories and exquisite Antoniolupi basins. The outer doors of the cabins are covered with Poltrona Frau leather.

On request, the starboard guest cabin can be replaced by a media room that opens out on to the lobby. The Pershing 74 is one of the company’s biggest recent successes and has been given a substantial redesign. Let us take a closer look...

he new key features are the updated shades of the on-board décor and the new Alpi wood and lacquer details, which provide a common thread running through the different rooms, appearing in everything from the curtain and mirror frames to the bathroom cabinets.

The fondness for sophisticated finishes and fine details is already plain to see in the lounge, furnished with a large, L-shaped corner sofa towards the stern, a central table with a smooth leather top and a structural unit with a retractable 40” flat screen TV. Ceilings and bulwarks are covered with Poltrona Frau leather in a light shade especially created to finish these decorative features. The leather on the helm station and seating is also made by Poltrona Frau. It marvellously complements the other finishes and the white oak flooring.

The galley is mid-level between the main deck and below deck. The units are coated with white gloss lacquer and once again there is a contrasting effect thanks to the dark Corian top.

The lower deck magnificently blends natural light with LEDs, creating appealing effects that really bring out the ivory and dark grey hues of the interiors. In the full beam master suite, the panelling covered with Vescom wallpaper is masterfully broken up by strips of LED lighting. Two burnished mirrors make the space feel bigger and there is a king-size bed upholstered with Poltrona Frau leather, as well as two Artemide wall lights. Rounding off the furniture is a chaise longue with textile upholstery by Zimmer + Rohde.

The style of the master suite is reproduced in both the foredeck VIP cabin and the guest cabin, which comes with two parallel beds and can be fitted with a pullman bed on request. They are all adorned with the same dark grey lacquer detailing, ceiling coverings, icecoloured bulwarks and leather Poltrona Frau upholstery.

Hi Danilo! We read about the charity work that Porto Montenegro is involved with. Tell us more about that…

We’re really strong with charity. We believe that whatever comes from the community, needs to go back to the community and our main investor, Mr Mank, when he arrived in Montenegro –he’s very well known in Toronto as one of the main charity players in Canada – he put a policy together to really give back to the community. We’re building in a town called Tivat, in Boka Bay, the deepest fjord in that part of Europe. And, we gave more than €2.5 million to the community –we’re rebuilding schools, rebuilding playgrounds and so on.

Basically, in that part of Montenegro there used to be a military school which was shut down in the 90s, and nothing much was happening in Tivat.

Now, of course, everything is super developed – we have amazing UNESCO sites, great nature and we’re building, not just our project Montenegro, we’re building the surroundings and making sure that everything is in line with the character and requirements of the place. By that I mean, for example, we’re building very low to keep in style with the Venetian influence, so we’re not destroying and disturbing the beautiful mountains around us. Porto Montenegro are known for their low-storey, five-floor high and eco-friendly buildings.

A lot of local stone, local wood and a lot of natural colours – Montenegro was under the Italian empire from the 14th to 18th century, so you can still find amazing influences of the Venetian era, and we want to build something a bit more inspired. Not super modern, something in between modern and practical, and inspired by the chic of Venice.

What sort of environmentally-friendly projects or initiatives does Porto Montenegro pursue?

We have just won the award of super yacht marina of distinction 2017, given by the British Harbour Association. It’s an international award and the reason I’m mentioning it is because we have been reviewed three times in the last two years to check if our eco standards are up to five golden anchors.

Five golden anchors in the marina industry is the same as five stars in the hotel industry. That means, not only is our service very high-quality, we’re known in our marina with 450 berths, to give individual attention to each client. Not only that, we’re also preserving Boka Bay – we’re almost at the very end of building a very deep fjord and the sea there is very much like a lake. It’s got a lot of protected area, there are high mountains around it and it’s very pretty. You can see a lot of greenery around it!

Now, we’re doing a eco project with Seabins, so the marina will have bins put inside the water that are automatically collecting rubbish. And a couple of other very interesting projects – because bear in mind, we were an abolished factory 20 years ago – a lot of bad things were happening there, not very eco-oriented. So when we arrived, we really wanted to bring fish back to the sea, we really want to be super eco-friendly and that’s what we’re doing now, and on the side creating a nice destination.

On a personal note, what types of boats peak your interest?

I really like super yachts and I believe they’re coming more and more to our waters – thanks to the fact that we’re recognised as cruising grounds. People are coming from Croatia and going to Greece, so they’re using the inner map – and especially after Game of Thrones being filmed there and now the new Robin Hood will be shot in Dubrovnik – an amazing city, only a 40-minute drive from us. Nevertheless, when it comes to boats, personally, I like older boats, the ones that have been refurbished to look amazing. I like the big sailing arcs with a lot of wood and a very rustic look. There’s a particular boat I really like, the former name was Queen of Andaman, and it’s now called Riana; a very interesting boat, 65 meteres long I believe, so 180ft almost. It has amazing features inside but still there remains this spirit of the former times. I like that mixture of the nice, homey atmosphere and the super yacht luxury. in terms of tourism, where can visitors stay during their trip to Porto Montenegro?

We have under us the Hotel Regent Porto Montenegro – a Taiwanese franchise. We have 11 Regents so far, most of them in the Far East, and the only two in Europe are in Berlin and Porto Montenegro. In terms of other places, I believe the hotel revolution started in 2006 when we got back our independence. That’s when the Aman Sveti Stefan opened – it’s on one of the most beautiful peninsulas of the island, and it’s very popular. Aman junkies are adoring it. Then came the Regent, a few years later the Hilton in our capital Podgorica, now the One & Only is opening just across from us. So a lot of amazing things within the last few years when it comes to luxury, because, really, Montenegro wasn’t known as a luxury destination 10 years ago. I believe that the marina really helped to expose Montenegro, we were one of the ice breakers. Now, we have at least seven or eight strong, internationally-recognised hotels, bearing in mind that we are only a small country of less than 700,000 citizens – significantly less than a million.

When did GCC travellers first discover Porto Montenegro and what sort of feedback have you received from Gulf visitors?

I believe that it all started about two years ago. We’re very much recognised as a European destination, attracting a lot of UK people, lots of German and Swiss visitors too, plus Serbia and Croatia. Then, out of nowhere, we got some interesting clients from Australia and the US, and then at some point in 2014 we received a couple of very interesting enquiries from the GCC. One thing led to another and we were acquired by ICD, a bit of lobbying happened and now FlyDubai, starting from June will be operating direct flights to Tivat, which is five minutes drive from our marina and village. Most Gulf citizens – UAE, Qatar and Kuwait – plus anyone who has an active Schengen, UK, or US visa can enter Montenegro without any visa restrictions.

Give us a snapshot of life in Montenegro and the future plans for Porto Montenegro as a destination… Well, myself I’m from Montenegro. I studied abroad

and when I got back home and really saw the great difference and change in plans for Montenegro from mass tourism into really nice luxury, highend, super yacht tourism. We’ve started to become a great wedding destination in the last couple of years, and for honeymoons, conferences, and other activities. We have one of the deepest canyons in the world after the Grand Canyon in Arizona which is a fantastic place to visit. Within only three hours drive from the coast, you can be in the mountains and actually in April you can go skiing and then later you can go to the sea and swim. Everything is very natural, so we do not have artificial fruit and food – everything is planted there. The food is amazing, the prices are quite affordable and you’re really getting value for money. We have amazing eco villages in the north of the country, which are great for people who are a bit tired of the city buzz and would just like to get away for two weeks to be at a nature retreat with lots of good food and activities like hiking, mountain biking etcetera.

If you’re into yachts then there’s Boka Bay – it’s UNESCO protected with lots of amazing scenery and lots of history. You can spend the day sailing and really enjoy the surroundings. So, we’re really about the destination – we want to show that Montenegro is really open and that we’re really into bringing people from this part of the world there. In the summer it goes up to 35 degrees Celsius which is perfect for swimming but not super hot, and in the winter it only goes down to 10 degrees Celsius so it’s just nice and cool, not freezing. When it comes to the future of Porto Montenegro, I believe we are going in the right direction. We are opening a new development in June and a second phase at the end of next year. We can accommodate the biggest boat in the world and if it ever happens that we are visited by a boat 250 meters long, we’ll be able to accommodate it in Boka Bay. So, lots of things happening with us in Porto Montenegro.

Diving Deep

Hadag caught up with Jeddah-based diving enthusiast and underwater photographer Cherine Hamdan to learn more on what keeps her excited about exploring the ocean.

How and when did you fall in love with the sea?

I started when I was young – we’d go swimming or just sit by the sea. Since I came to Jeddah, most of my friends are scuba divers and instructors, so they encouraged me take up diving, so I thought “ok let’s do it!” especially because it’s a new activity and there’s not much else to do. It was on the very first time that I went into the sea that I fell in love with the colours and the fish under the sea – it was the first time I saw something like this in my life, especially in the Red Sea, here in Jeddah. After that I attended many different diving courses and fell in love with the techniques and different elements of diving. At that point, I wanted to share and teach other people about it so I decided to become an instructor and here I am now.

When did you get into photography?

During one of the earlier diving courses, I really thought “I need to take visuals and make memories of this” so I casually started taking pictures under the water. I didn’t want to lose all the fun I had so I started with just a cheap underwater camera and as time passed, my hobby advanced and I moved on to getting better cameras. It’s not something that I was getting paid to do so it took some time to get all the different equipment.

in underwater photography, what has been the hardest challenge you’ve faced?

Diving wasn’t really the challenge as I was doing that every weekend. If I didn’t go diving, I’d almost feel sad and unwell. Diving is the fun part! But when it came to photography, I started small and really had to perfect things like getting a good angle and acquiring the right lights – these were the biggest challenges.

Where are your favourite diving spots?

Definitely the Red Sea and the Maldives. I love it in the Maldives, it’s beautiful and different. But, the Red Sea is still at the top of the list because the amount of Coral in it is crazy!

What is your favourite sea creature?

The shark. People fear it and it is a dangerous animal, but not as much as it’s perceived. If you don’t disturb the shark in the waters, then it will likely not harm you. On the diving courses, we were taught how about how sharks behave around divers. It’s actually a very useful animal – its main job is to keep the sea clean of sick and dead creatures. Sharks sense the pulse of the heart with their nose – they don’t actually advance towards a regular heartbeat, but the thing is that when people see a shark, they panic so their heartbeat actually goes into overdrive, high and low – this confuses the shark and they will think “is this creature sick or not? Shall we eat it or not?”

Do you have a wish list of anywhere you’d like to go diving?

I would love to dive in the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and be able to take more pictures of the Great White Shark. I believe that would be an incredible challenge because it’s one of the hardest sharks to photograph.

Do you have a message for the youth?

I really would say to go out there and experience diving for yourself – you’ll fall in love with it. It’s a very cool way to explore the world. But, remember to follow the safety guidelines and rules – get all the proper training. Don’t be a hero, just enjoy it! A must is to visit the Red Sea here in Jeddah – there’s too many beautiful things to see in it.

The Ferrari 488 Spider is the latest chapter in Maranello’s ongoing history of open-top V8 sports cars, a story that started with the targa-top version of the 308 GTB - the immortal 308 GTS - and which ultimately resulted in the full convertible Spider architecture. Hadag has the lowdown…

STARTING wITH THE RHT (Retractable Hard Top), around which the entire car was developed, every area of the 488 Spider has been designed to set new technological benchmarks for the sector. The result is the most powerful and innovative Ferrari Spider ever built, a car that marries the extraordinary prowess of the 488 GTB coupé’s mid-rear V8 with the joy of tackling even the most challenging roads surrounded by nature’s heady aromas and colours and accompanied by an inimitable Ferrari engine soundtrack.

The RHT, which debuted on the 458 Spider, was a world-first for such a solution on a mid-rear engine car and has rendered traditional soft-tops obsolete as it is not only lighter (-25kg) but also provides better protection from noise and the elements.

Clearly, the choice of a rigid hard top was essential to the character of the new Ferrari, guaranteeing a significant improvement in in-car comfort. With the roof in place, in fact, occupants enjoy better protection from the elements and improved sound insulation. In addition, the roof will not deform due to the high pressure field created at high speeds. Traditional hard tops, however, tend to be heavy, bulky and dilute the look and design of a car. In fact, a classic hard top is stowed as a completely three dimensional object – not merely the roof itself but also the rear side windows and back window. Its weight is significant and its bulk will effectively compromise the design of the entire rear of the car.

At the very heart of the car is, of course, the 3902cc turbo-charged V8 which set a new benchmark for this type of architecture. Thanks to a maximum power output of 670 cv and the smooth, progressive torque delivery in higher gears provided by the Variable Torque Management system, the 488 Spider sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in three seconds flat and from 0 to 200 km/h in 8.7 seconds – impressive to say the least.

These performance figures are accompanied by a throttle response time of just 0.8 seconds which essentially eliminates the turbo lag typical of this kind of engine. In line with Ferrari tradition, the 488 Spider also has its own unique and distinctive soundtrack to reflect its performance.

This is also the most aerodynamically efficient Ferrari Spider ever built, thanks to a series of complex aero solutions. Maranello’s engineers managed to guarantee optimal downforce whilst reducing drag (two normally mutually-exclusive objectives) by developing several innovative devices, including a blown spoiler and an aerodynamic underbody incorporating vortex generators.

The 488 Spider’s dynamic behaviour is exceptional with the accent very much on the ease with which it can be driven on the limit. To achieve this engaging handling balance the mechanical set-up was honed in tandem with the electronic control systems which now include an evolved version of Ferrari’s side slip angle control (Side Slip Control 2 - SSC2). Overall, in fact, vehicle response times are more rapid than the previous Spider.

Exterior design is fundamental to the character of any Ferrari but the 488 Spider, designed by the Ferrari Design Centre, features radical new styling honed around its aerodynamic requirements which brilliantly reflects the drop-top driving pleasure focus of its sportiness and performance.

The 488 has classic Ferrari mid-rear-engined sports car proportions: a short muscular front wing into which the bumper is wedged that lends the whole front of the car a sense of power and speed, and immediately draws the eye to flanks featuring the new side air intakes for the intercoolers. The motif of the subtle crease line that forms the scallops on the door leading to the intakes is a nod to the 308 GTB.

The 488 Spider’s cockpit was designed to underscore Ferrari’s Formula 1-inspired philosophy of creating a seamless relationship between driver and car: the commands not clustered on the steering wheel are on the wraparound satellite pods which are angled directly towards the driver. The new lighter, sleeker, horizontally more compact dashboard also curves around the cockpit and features ultra-sporty air vents.

It has been a long time since we’ve seen a car so meticulously designed that both looks, feels and drives like the king of the road. Yet again, Ferrari takes the crown.

It’s truly a sprawling hotel with so much to discover. Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at the Bosphorus has 145 guest rooms and 25 suites. The rooms feature a striking blend of Ottoman design and contemporary furnishings. Subtle hand-painted ceiling motifs mirror the geometric shapes of the fabrics below, while handcrafted ‘Hiref’ mirrors and lithographs representative of Turkish and Ottoman art adorn the walls. The four Palace Roof Suites feature private rooftop terraces with a 180-degree view of the Bosphorus, across to the Bosphorus Bridge on one side and the distant skyline of the Old Town on the other. The Spa introduces a decadent approach to the authentic hammam (Turkish bath) experience, combining the traditional cleansing properties of the bath with the indulgent delights of contemporary, western treatments. Three separate hammams (men’s, women’s and couples) – a first in the city – nine treatment rooms and one VIP Spa suite (with whirlpool) are arranged around a pillared pool, sky-lit from a height of 6.7 m (22ft). An intimate retreat of just 65 rooms and suites located in a former prison in the centre of Istanbul’s Old Town – this is what you call a unique hospitality experience. Hadag stayed at the Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet to take in all of the property’s neo-classical glory…

THIS THREE-STOREY, neo-classic building wraps around a landscaped, courtyard garden – formerly the prisoners’ exercise yard – and neighbours some of the city’s most impressive historical monuments. The UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Topkapi Palace, Haghia Sophia and the Blue Mosque are just a couple of minutes stroll from the Hotel. In keeping with this privileged location, the Hotel’s interiors and decoration pay homage to the city’s rich Ottoman heritage. Shuttered windows and arched doorways open to reveal well-lit, uncluttered spaces; decorative Ottoman artefacts and antique rugs are incorporated amongst neoclassical furniture and welcoming Turkish sofas. The result is an easy, homely ambience that brings the guest close enough to the city bustle yet retains the exclusivity of the address. The Hotel building was first constructed as a prison between 1918-1919. Its original structure is best preserved in the southwest wing, which now houses the lobby, bar and reception. The front façade of this wing features original stone and woodwork as well as decorative tiles by respected Turkish artist, Hafiz Mehmed Emin of Kutahya. Sensitively preserved details throughout the Hotel recall its fascinating history: from the courtyard watchtowers (now housing the elevators) to torque-like brass rings and an inmate’s poignant engraving on an old marble pillar. The use of local materials and decorative geometric motifs further evoke Turkey’s rich history and link the regenerated interiors to the traditional artefacts on display.

Light and airy interiors are decorated in warm, natural tones, which defer to the vibrant beauty of the landscaped courtyard and historical monuments beyond. Three-dimensional mosaic artworks by local artist, Hulya Vurnal Ikizgul, bring a simple yet powerful beauty to alcoves and walls both within the Hotel and courtyard, providing an appealing synergy between the indoor and outdoor areas.

The hotel’s restaurant, Seasons, is located within a glass pavilion that forms the focal point of the lush, courtyard garden; here, international and Turkish fine dining come together. Turkish traditions are also evident throughout the hotel in the warmth of the welcome and consistently high level of service – both exceptional, even by Four Seasons’ standards.

There’s also The Lounge which comprises three distinct areas: the cosy Blue Room, with relaxing sofas, and fireplace; the sophisticated Piano Bar and the bright Winter Garden, featuring potted plants and a pleasant garden view.
