GREETINGS ocean enthusiasts, and welcome to what is an extremely exciting time for us here at Hadag as we enter into an interesting period of transition. For, as of this issue, Hadag is now a regional publication, as well as for the first time being bi-lingual, catering to our expatriate and local readers in English and Arabic. We felt that this was important for two main reasons: ever since its conception, we’ve wanted Hadag to have a strong local identity in both name and nature. This is reflected editorially in our interviews with Arab mariners, fishermen and ship builders, as well as in our strong focus on the region’s environment and traditions. And now, it is reflected linguistically as well.

The second main reason was in response to the reactions from the many members of the public and government officials we’ve introduced the magazine to, who loved the idea, and the look and feel of Hadag , but felt that including the Arabic language would help local ocean enthusiasts to identify more closely with the magazine.

Readers from both the expatriate and GCC communities are extremely important to us, and so we’re very proud and excited to present the new bilingual and regional Hadag to you all.

inner of the prestigious 2013 World Superyacht Awards, the flagship of the Princess range, the tri-deck 40M, is over one hundred and thirty feet long, and represents the absolute peak of quality, luxury, performance and space.

Through the stateroom’s stainless steel doors, a private deck is located aft with an intimate dining area and expansive seating. From here stairs lead to the main deck below or up to the sun deck.

The second master stateroom lies across the full beam of the main deck, in its conventional forward position, and enjoys a seating area, separate office and en suite. As with all M Class

yachts, tall sections of glass run along each side for the most incredible views and natural light.

The lower deck accommodates the four further en suite cabins, two double cabins aft and two twin cabins with sliding berths, as well as the fully Technogym-equipped gymnasium lying forward.

The main deck of Solaris features a saloon seating area that is designed to easily accommodate up to 12 guests with a separate dining area located forward featuring a solid Macassar ebony table and finished in materials chosen from the expansive Princess Design Studio styling portfolio. Sliding doors to port and starboard lead out to deck-side balconies connecting this magnificent entertaining space with the anchorage.

The whole yacht is easily served by the full galley and crew quarters that lie forward, including their own dedicated staircase offering discreet movement around Solaris and minimal disturbance to her guests.

Her state-of-the-art composite hull construction is both strong and lightweight, delivering superb efficiency and speed.

The advanced semi-displacement hull design offers excellent stability at lower displacement speeds but fitted with twin MTU V12 2,938hp engines she can deliver speeds up to 20 knots.

The interior of the Z44 is the perfect balance of fit and finish with a very user-friendly appeal. Entering the wheelhouse, one is surrounded by rich solid woods, glove stitched leather and book matched veneers. Supple leather seating surrounds the immense entertaining table and a custom captain’s chair serves both the dashboard and the end of the table by swivelling 180 degrees. All electronic and navigation equipment has been easily placed within arm’s reach. Each piece of furniture is individually crafted before being fitted into the yacht. It is then removed and veneered, before going to environmental paint shops for the final application of lacquer, showcasing the beauty of the wood. All in all, the interior of the Z44 is a masterful use of space with characteristic levels of finish.

Dubbed the ‘classic of classics’ – the Itama 45 promises comfort, liveability and maximum enjoyment of the outdoors.

Entirely constructed at the shipyards of the Ferretti Group in Forlì, the new 45 model, a further evolution of the best selling Forty is again a creation of Marco Casali.

The teams arrived in Abu Dhabi in December, which was the end of the second leg of the race.

ThE VolVo Ocean Race is the world’s longest professional sporting event and the leading offshore sailing competition. The race began in 1973 as the Whitbread Round the World Race, and though a lot has changed since then, the essence of the race remains exactly the same and it is well established as one of the Big Three global sailing events along with the America’s Cup and the Olympics.

Seven crews will battle it out across nine months and nine legs, with the boats covering 38,739nautical miles (71,745 km/44,580 miles), crossing the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and Southern Oceans, and visiting 11 countries in five continents: Spain, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, China, New Zealand, Brazil, United States, Portugal, France, The Netherlands and Sweden.

The crews

The seven teams competing across the nine months of the race are: Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing from the UAE; Team Alvimedica, the US/Turkish youth challenge; Team Brunel, the Dutch campaign; Dongfeng Race Team, a Chinese entry; Team SCA, the first all-female team in over a decade; MAPFRE; and the Danish entry, Team Vestas Wind.

In the race so far, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing has taken the lead, winning leg one from Spain to South Africa, and are as we write battling in the top three, all within 30nm of each other, for the win in leg two in the race to their home port of Abu Dhabi.

The crews are made up of eight sailors and one non-sailing embedded journalist, the Onboard Reporter who is responsible for capturing the stories and adventures taking place onboard with images, video and text - a task billed as one of the toughest jobs in global media. roatia has come a very long way since its bitter war of independence against former Yugoslavia in the early nineties, and is now a flourishing EU member. And because of its incredible natural beauty, tourism has been a major factor in its success.

Adriatic cruises are now one of Croatia’s biggest tourism sectors, with thousands of visitors flocking its coastal cities to board luxurious cruise yachts and island hop up and down the country’s coastline. As a result, there are now many cruise operators offering these services, often tailored to the specific desires of different tourists. Many coastal experiences in Croatia start in the city of Dubrovnik, not least because

the medieval streets and walls of Dubrovnik were used for much of the filming of King’s Landing in the hugely popular Game of Thrones series. It also boasts a seaport from which many cruises depart and ocean liners visit. However, it is also a highly popular destination in itself, with the old walled part of the city surrounded by medieval battlements that are a favourite spot for romantic walks around the outside of the old town.

Within Dubrovnik, there are a number of great sites to visit, including the city’s Renaissance-era Sponza Palace, the GothicRenaissance Rector’s Palace, and the St. Saviour Church. Also worth a visit is the city’s most popular church, St. Blaise’s, a Baroque cathedral built in the 18th century. And then there are, of course, the city’s famous walls.

Elsewhere along the coast, Hvar island is perhaps even more popular as a tourist destination, boasting a wealth of historical sites, beautiful beaches, a prosperous viniculture and a lively nightlife in the port town of Hvar.

Towards the southern end of the coast is Croatia’s second-largest city, Split. Also a major tourist draw, the most famous of Split’s many historical sites is Diocletian’s Palace, an ancient monument built by Roman emperor Diocletian in the 4th century AD that is still in remarkably good condition, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

One of the biggest attractions to Croatia is its vibrant nightlife, slated by many to be one of the best in the world right now. Islands up and down the Adriatic boast fantastic bars, clubs and parties to attract the many partycruises that sail along the coast.

The WARDS of THe WaTerS

Bahrain’s Coast Guard plays a vital role in maintaining the security of the Kingdom’s coastline, from towing stricken pleasure craft back to shore to fending off unwanted ‘guests’ from international waters.

AS an island Kingdom, a well equipped and highly trained Coast Guard is hugely important to the security of the country. Their roles are many, from assisting stricken pleasure craft to enforcing maritime regulations, but their overall goal is the ongoing security and safety of Bahrain’s waters.

The very first seeds of Bahrain’s modernday Coast Guard were planted towards the end of the 1930s, with a captain, two sailors and a single vessel named ‘Hawar’, based by Muharraq Bridge under the supervision of the Bahrain government police.

It remained that way until 1945, when an additional four wooden ships were purchased, two under steam power, and two sailing ships used to transport goods and prisoners between Bahrain’s mainland and Jeddah, and the outlying islands such as Hawar.

In 1961 the Coast Guard became an independent unit operating under the command of the Bahrain government police. Government interest and support for this unit increased, resulting in a total fleet of 11 ships, and a total crew of 39.

The ongoing success of the Coast Guard’s operations resulted in the Ministry of Interior’s increased interest in developing their capabilities, and so in 1972 the Coast Guard was separated from the police and became a fully independent force responsible for the security and stability of the Coast of Bahrain.

In 1973, they were officially named the Bahrain Coast Guard.

On the 21st of April, 1980, His Highness

Shaikh Isa Bin Salman Al Khalifa patronised the opening of the new Coast Guard Base in Muharraq, which incorporated many new departments including maintenance workshops, carpentry, electricity, a harbour and a lecture hall.

The Coast Guard began to sponsor Bahraini youth to be sent abroad to learn the latest marine sciences, as well as new training courses in Bahrain. They also trained

with foreign coast guard services, gaining experience from countries such as America, Great Britain and Pakistan.

With the rapid economic development of Bahrain and resulting investment in maritime infrastructure and increase in shipping activity, the Coast Guard built a second base to monitor the southern end of Bahrain in Bander Al Dar. This base incorporated many departments including a multi-million dollar radar control room covering the entire of Bahrain’s territorial waters.

There is also now a third base located near to the King Fahd Causeway to Saudi Arabia to patrol the Western side of the island. The Coast Guard’s fleet now comprises more then 80 boats of varying sizes, from larger ships purchased in Spain, Turkey and the US to high-speed boats capable of intercepting almost any kind of vessel.

Sailing is by far the biggest activity for the yacht club.

RECENTly Hadag partnered with the Bahrain Yacht Club (BYC) for their annual fishing competition, the largest of its kind on the island. With over 287 participants in 75 boats, and 18 confirmed sponsors, the event was a huge success, but its importance goes beyond being simply a competitive event for fishing enthusiasts.

“While everyone enjoys the competition and has a good time, its main objective is to teach participants how to fish responsibly whilst protecting the ocean environment by providing them with all the necessary information, such as suitable areas, types of fish, and methods and equipment for fishing,” says BYC Commodore Abdulla Alnaimi.

Abdulla has been a member of the club since 2002, and Commodore since 2012. As an ocean lover, it’s a role he takes very seriously, thanks to the importance of the club to its members. “The BYC is the first choice for sailing enthusiasts because of the facilities, the instructors and the great location, which is easy to reach in the middle of the island. It is both a centre for watersports and a social club for people who are interested in water sports and the ocean.”

The BYC provides all kinds of watersports training with qualified instructors, from sailing and powerboat courses to captain’s courses, windsurfing, and more. There’s also a marina and a workshop, as well as a clubhouse with a restaurant and social facilities.

Though it caters to a wide range of maritime activities, the club’s main area of focus is sailing. “The biggest event of the year, and the biggest event of its kind in Bahrain, is the annual Spring Regatta, which is a whole day out for all the family with a BBQ and entertainment in addition to the competition,” says Abdulla.

As a fully recognised Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Training Centre, there are many levels of tuition available at the club for both children and adults, in a variety of crafts, all conducted by qualified RYA sailing instructors, which guarantees that the training will be of the highest international standard. Training is available to all, regardless of age or ability. Children as young as seven are able to learn boat handling techniques, safety and essential background knowledge of sailing. The ancient tradition of ‘dhow’-building is alive and well today, not least in Bahrain, where A.Aziz Shaheen Khalfan still plies his trade constructing these beautiful vessels.

hARDy,seaworthy and tested by time, the dhow can trace its roots as far back as ancient China, around 600BC. It was spread throughout Asia by Chinese explorers, and adopted by many local sailors and fishermen as their vessel of choice. The dhow is thought to have been brought to the Gulf by Yemeni and Omani sailors, and from here went on to ply its trade along the coasts of East Africa.

Dhows are still used as fishing and small cargo vessels to this day, and the construction and maintenance of the wooden ships continues to be a lively trade. One such tradesman is A.Aziz Khalfan and we caught up with him to find out more about his craft.

From what age did you begin?

A very young age, only 12 or 13 years old! how did you become a dhow builder?

To me it’s a passion that I pursued. It was inspired by my entire family, who were all carpenters working on doors and windows since a long time ago.

Were any of your family dhow builders?

No, I’m the only one who specialised in this craft.

What type of wood do you use? is it plentiful?

I have been using the same kind of wood for a long time. It’s called “Alsaay” (teak) wood and it’s the only type that I have been using because of its ability to endure and last longer. The wood was readily available before, however these days it’s harder to come by; it’s mostly imported from Dubai.

how many dhows have you made, and how long does it take?

I make two types of dhows, a big one and a small one. I have made about 10 big ones and more than 50 small ones. It takes about six to seven months to create the big kind, but with the help of workers only four to five months. The small ones take 20 to 25 days to be made. how much does it cost?

The cost associated with building the dhow is very high, as each wood plank costs 130BD, leading to a total cost of building a dhow of 8,000 to 10,000BD.

have you taken part in exhibitions or festivals?

Yes I have joined the Katara competition for traditional ships, which is an annual competition held in Qatar. I have entered the competition with my Dhow and won first place.

how did your interest in the ocean begin?

My father was a diver back in the 1980s, he worked in agriculture and marine resources, and I always used to see him going diving, and then bringing all the equipment back home with him. By the time I was about 15 years old, I had found out more about what he was doing, and so I asked him to teach me how to dive.

A few years later, in 1997, there was a project to clean the oceans around Bahrain staged by the Agriculture and Marine Resources directorate, and I wanted to take part, so they taught me everything I needed to know, and that’s when I got the proper hang of it.

and how did things progress into underwater photography?

A year later my uncle bought a film camera, but he didn’t know how to use it. I had used cameras before to take normal pictures, so he handed it over to me, and I used it until 2001.

Then I purchased a compact digital camera, at this time I was still working for Agriculture and Marine Resources. The camera lasted until 2007 when I had to change it due to the quality limitations of digicams.

So then I got a Nikon D200 DSLR camera that was very expensive in those days. I

practiced using the full manual mode until I got a hang of it entirely. Then I purchased a waterproof housing from eBay, which was used, but in good condition. With time I was able to buy the full range of accessories. Then a few years later I got the Nikon D7000 along with a new waterproof housing as well.

What has been your best experience so far?

I went for a trip to Sharm el Sheikh, which helped me capture better images due to the clear sea, and different sea creatures that I saw. My technique of photography was to capture each image and see the flaws and ways in which I can improve. This helped me a lot.

Also, in 2013 I participated in a competition called “Our underwater competition” by USA magazine, which was international, I won first place, this was one of the biggest achievements to me.

What are your future plans in photography?

I would like to publish a book with my name and all the photographs that I’ve been taking throughout the years, which I am currently working on. My ultimate dream is to take pictures of sharks of all types.

oral reefs are the forests of the oceans, providing food, shelter and a habitat for countless species of marine wildlife. However, in recent history, a combination of events and factors has had a hugely negative impact on Bahrain’s ocean habitats. The most significant of these was the massive global coral bleaching event back in 1997, where a sudden spike in sea temperatures had a catastrophic effect on reefs around the world. That has since been combined with bad fishing practices, and the damage caused by dredging, land reclamation, industrialisation and desalinisation.

The destruction of reefs, which can take hundreds of years to grow, has meant the decimation of ocean wildlife, but the General Directorate for Protection of Marine Resources and Wildlife have been taking measures to counteract this problem. Two of the first major steps were to call for a major survey of marine wildlife, and to introduce a legal requirement for environmental impact assessments to be completed before a large reclamation project was undertaken. This is where Reef Arabia, or more accurately its parent company, Environment Arabia, came in. The company was set up in 2002 by Bahraini businesswoman Halel Engineer, in response to a government call for specialists to survey Bahrain’s waters.

“So, Environment Arabia was primarily set up to do these environmental impact assessments and marine ecological surveys,” says Michael Aurora, one of the company’s expert divers and marine biologists. “When you do an environmental study that show habitats have been or will be destroyed, you need to give something back, or compensate for the damage, and the thing we kept coming back to was artificial reefs.”

Artificial reefs are structures made of a very durable marine grade concrete that can last hundreds of years in the sea, and which has a neutral pH level to allow for a varied range of species to flourish on and around it. The structures are built to imitate naturally occurring coral, and provide a haven for fish and a habitat for marine life

such as algae, seaweeds, barnacles, and the other building blocks of a thriving reef.

Reef Arabia’s work is not just pioneering in Bahrain, but also in the rest of the world, as it is still a relatively new industry, and innovations are still being made. Their work with reef models made using 3D printers in cooperation with their Australian partners saw them featured in the US edition of National Geographic magazine last year.

“The very first reefs of this kind in the world were set up in Bahrain by us, and this is something we’re very proud of,” says Michael.

However, they face challenges on many fronts, not least through the overfishing of the country’s waters.

So what is the answer? Well, it could lie in Reef Arabia’s future plans for their company, which is a new division called Eco Arabia. A shift towards eco-tourism could be exactly what is needed. If resources currently being used for commercial fishing could be redirected towards a lucrative tourism industry instead, people don’t have to lose their jobs, and the oceans can still be protected.

This kind of tourism could also address the main issue, which is one of education.

The reefs being created, as well as the fish that populate them, are part of a delicate ecosystem that is under serious threat, and it is the responsibility of everyone who uses the oceans, whether for livelihood or recreation, to protect them.

Reef Arabia took donations from organsations, who were then able to name their very own piece of the new reefs!

The Sea ShePheRdS

Of all the environmental organisations who aim to protect the world’s oceans, none have been more active, more determined and more controversial than the SSCS. We talk to Samir, the organisation’s representative in Bahrain…

ThE Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) shot to fame following an Animal Planet documentary series called Whale Wars, which chronicled the organisation’s ongoing battle against illegal activities in the whaling industry. According to their charter, their mission is to “end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world’s oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species.”

Their founder, Paul Watson, was a former council member of Greenpeace, but he was voted out for his aggressive stance on environmental protection that was not in line with Greenpeace’s peaceful protest ideology. After leaving Greenpeace, Watson founded the SSCS.

Their activities have not been without controversy, with numerous court cases and injunctions raised against them by various governments and organisations around the world.

Whether you agree with their tactics or not, you cannot argue against the fact that the SSCS sends a powerful message on ocean wildlife conservation, and their stance has gained massive support from ocean lovers around the world.

One such enthusiast has established a supporter’s group in Bahrain, and the only one in the Gulf so far. “My story with Sea Shepherd started three or four years ago, when I saw Whale Wars,” says Samir. “I contacted Sea Shepherd global and became certified as a supporters representative.”

However, the society is not officially registered as a charitable organisation in Bahrain as of yet. “We’re in touch with the relevant ministries to get approved, and Sea Shepherd global has sent the required letters to the Embassy of Bahrain in the US, but the process is long and complicated,” says Samir.

In the meantime, the group holds social gatherings, raises awareness on ocean conservation and participates in events to spread the word. “If anyone wants to find out more, they can check out the Facebook group, Sea Shepherd – BHN. Our main focus is on educating people on how to protect the oceans and their wildlife.”

The experts at Baharat, Le Meridien Bahrain City Centre put their very own touch on this much-loved local dish.

Ingredients

Serves 4:

180 gm Local king fish

100 gm Fresh potatoes, thinly sliced 20 gm Black olives, chopped

6 gm Ginger, Garlic chopped and Red chilli

50 gm Onion, chopped

5 gm Fresh coriander, chopped

3 gm Cumin powder

4 gm Salt Black pepper powder

150 ml Whipping cream and Fish stock

20 ml Lemon juice and Olive oil

200 gm Jarjeer (local rocket leaves), chopped

Method: Potatoes: Heat the oven to 165 °C. Mix the salt, black pepper, fresh coriander, garlic, and half of the olive oil together and pour over the sliced potatoes. Mix well to coat the potatoes. Put the mixture in an oven-proof dish and cook for 25 minutes. Remove from the oven, add the olives and half of the whipping cream and combine everything. Season with salt and pepper.

Fish:

Mix salt, black pepper, cumin powder, lemon juice and garlic together and rub the fish fillets with the mixture. Pour some olive oil in a sauté pan, once hot add the marinated fish fillets and fry until golden. Fry the other side until cooked through. Remove from heat. Set aside.

Jarjeer sauce: Heat a saucepan and place the chopped onion, garlic and half of the whipping cream in the pan. Simmer. Add the jarjeer, season with salt and pepper and blend everything together.

8pcs King fish tranche (skin on), cut into 60g slices

30ml Olive oil

500g Carrots, peeled

30g Red onions, finely chopped

10g Garlic, finely chopped

Hollandaise Sauce

330g Butter

3pcs Egg yolks and 1pc Egg

25g Shallot(s)

50ml white vinegar & water mix

1pc Bay leaves

1g Salt

1g Cayenne pepper

25ml Lemon juice

1g Sugar

25ml Vegetable oil

3pcs Crushed black peppercorns

50g Fresh coriander

Method:

Roasted Carrot Tartar

Cut 200g of the carrots in chunks, boil in salt water and process to purée; Cut remaining carrots into slices; season and grill until nice in colour and soft in texture; Finely chop the grilled carrots, heat the olive oil, sauté the onions and garlic, add the grilled carrots and continue cooking for 1 minute; Add the carrot purée and reduce while continuously stirring until the texture is firm. Season to taste, keep warm.

Hollandaise Sauce

Melt butter in a pan and filter through a cloth to clarify; sauté shallots in vegetable oil until glazed, add bay leaf and peppercorns and deglaze with white wine (white vinegar & water as alternative). Simmer for 3 minutes (to reduce); Whisk 3 egg yolks, 1 whole egg and the reduction in a metal bowl on a hot water bath (2 to 3 mins.). Stir the clarified butter (approx. 50°C/122°F), drop by drop and gradually, until an emulsion forms. Season with the spices and keep warm.

Coriander oil

Blend olive oil and coriander together until smooth. Season with salt and pepper.

The Rolls-Royce Ghost II isn’t about drama or excitement, it’s about luxury and tranquillity. However, that isn’t to say you don’t feel a certain amount of excitement when you climb behind the wheel of one of the world’s most desirable cars, boasting a 600hp V12!

So what’s new about the Series ii?

Design-wise, very little, as Rolls-Royce feel that their current creation is already as good as it can be, and only minor changes were required to freshen up the new model. They wouldn’t be wrong in thinking this way, as the Ghost has been the driving force behind a huge increase in total units sold for the brand worldwide since it was first released back in 2009.

However, the Series II does now feature the same impressive satellite-guided gearbox that was featured for the first time in the Wraith. This gearbox is fed information from the SatNav to predict upcoming road types, such as motorway, country lane and twisting mountain road, for example, and calibrates the gearbox for optimum performance on that particular type of road.

Billed as “a less formal, more contemporary

and dynamic expression of Rolls-Royce luxury”, the Ghost represents the driver’s alternative to the Phantom, which is most often chauffer driven.

Having driven both we can definitely say that the Ghost is less formidable than the Phantom, being smaller in most dimensions, and therefore more manageable.

We say ‘less formidable’, as the Ghost is no compact car. At well over 17 feet long and almost six-and-a-half feet wide, it’s still bigger than other premium luxury barges like the S Class, A8 and the XJ.

Powering the Ghost is Rolls Royce’s monstrous 6.6l twin-turbo V12, which puts out almost 600hp and 780Nm of torque, so despite weighing around two-and-a-half tonnes, it’s still no slouch. It’ll hit 100km/h in just five seconds, and reach a limited top speed of 250km/h.

At one point on the country route we were

driving, we ended up stuck in a long tailback of traffic. Thankfully, the queue eventually shortened until there were only three cars in front. We saw a space, weighed our options… and floored it.

About two seconds later we were back in our lane with room to spare, and I was left wondering what the hell had just happened!

You see, there was no pause, there was no roar, and absolutely no drama. I’d pulled out, and the car had simply, silently, and instantly surged forward with unbelievable pace, and glided back into the left hand lane before I’d even had time to ponder whether it was a good idea or not.

It was just all so… effortless! And this is exactly what the Rolls-Royce Ghost, or any Rolls-Royce for that matter, is all about. It’s not about action and drama; it’s about luxury. Nothing else. Just pure, unadulterated luxury.

Also available from the App Store is Garmin Helm, which allows you to view and control your compatible Garmin chartplotter from an iPhone or iPad.

The Garmin 1020xs is one of the more high-end options on the market, but if you’re seriously into your fishing and diving, or operate commercial services, it comes highly recommended.
